Welcome to Brecon 2018 Welcome to the 35th Brecon Jazz Festival. How has it managed to get to the ripe old age of 35? Well, the continued support of the residence, visitors and the jazz fraternity of Brecon and the surrounding areas, thats how. We salute you all for the great achievement and weather its the Jazz, The Frazz, the Fringe or just the street events that attracts you to Brecon we hope you continue to bless us with your presence. We have a great weekend planed for you and this linked with this beautiful town and great shopping means a full weekend for all the family. Let the Festival begin and lets make the 35th one to remember - the FESTIVAL GUIDE TEAM. 'The Brecon Jazz festival is a world renowned event and is something that really puts our town on the map. The Town Council wholeheartedly supports the festival and is keen to help it be a success so that the event grows in a sustainable way. I would like to give my personal thanks to everyone involved for preparing and delivering this outstanding festival. Frazz Parade 2018 On Saturday 11th August the festival Frazz Parade will cross town led by Samba Brecon, all are welcome to join in, meeting at Theatr Brycheiniog at 2.30pm for a 3pm start and finishing at Brecon Cathedral at 4pm. This year "Land of the Sea" will be the theme, so look out for our giant fish amongst the revellers! Now known as the Frazz Parade to mark the celebration of both the Jazz and Fringe Festivals, the tradition of a carnival parade has a long history for the town of Brecon. In the past the Adamant Band, and the Kruger Carnival Band from Holland, were among those leading the festivities and today Samba Brecon do a fantastic job. Come along in fancy dress, brightly coloured cloths or as you are to take part- the more the merrier! under 12s must be accompanied by an adult.

IAN SHAW FRIDAY 10th AUGUST 6pm. St Mary’s Brecon The 35th Brecon Jazz Festival features what is believed to be a first – a world class singer raising funds for a refugee charity. Ian Shaw, who is from North Wales, started performing as a stand up comedian, on the alternative comedy circuit, alongside Julian Clary, Rory Bremner and Jo Brand. His degree in music and a prodigious singing talent soon came into their own and he has become internationally recognised as “the greatest male jazz singer Britain has to offer." (Jazz Times, US). He has also received many accolades including the BBC Jazz Awards Singer of the Year, twice. Ian’s ready wit and well honed comedy timing combined with a fine baritone/tenor voice and ability to slip into affecting falsetto ensure that his performances are always entertaining. Although regarded as a jazz singer, Ian is equally at home with pop and soul whether established standards, contemporary classics or self penned songs which often deliver powerful personal or social messages. Hollywood Reporter believes that had he been a contemporary of Mel Torme or Betty Carter he may have been the bigger star. Ian is also an inspirationally compassionate man who has worked tirelessly, supporting refugees in Northern France, including “The Jungle” and in the U.K. He became involved with the charity Side by Side: Humanitarian Aid to Refugees and is now one of its trustees. Side by Side was founded by two extraordinary “ordinary mums” appalled by the image of toddler Alan Kurdi lying dead on a beach. The group has attracted many volunteers and evolved to meet changing needs. They have delivered clothes and hundreds of sleeping bags, tents and blankets to Calais, Dunkirk and more recently Paris. They built a Restaurant for the Eritrean Community, raised funds for over 30 caravans that were taken to France and became home to the more vulnerable families and children. They support a number of projects including ones for education, first aid and food. All profits from the gig will go to Side by Side

Brecon Fringe 13th year Brecon Fringe is in its 13th year and lucky for some we say. Especially lucky for the bands who've managed to get a gig at one of our twenty wonderful venues - with the help of social media and word of mouth, a gig on the Fringe has become harder to get than a copy of the Gutenberg Bible. Henry Ford said of his Model T Ford: “You can have any colour you like – as long as it’s black.” With The Fringe, it’s the opposite – you never know what you’ll get. You do know you'll get a good time though, with a programme of music to suit everyone.
We'd like to thank the many businesses, organisations and venues who've supported this guide and hope that our fringegoers support them in turn. We'd also like to join Brecon Jazz Festival in celebrating their 35th year. Here's to many more!

Band Biogs SPIRIT OF BOOGIE Dance with the boogie get high. 'Cause boogie nights are always the best in town. Or so sung Heatwave in 1976. Fast forward about 40 years and it’s another bunch of chaps and chapettes singing and playing with identical gusto. Some might say with a bit more gusto than that of the original. Spirit Of Boogie call themselves the baddest and the downright craziest eleven piece funk mega band this universe has ever seen. And I’m not going to argue with that. No way. As they say: Got to keep on dancing. Keep on dancing. Spirit Of Boogie play The Clarence on Fringe Saturday at 9.30pm.
BRIEF ENCOUNTER DUO Oooh, bored suburban housewives and stern doctors smooching on railway stations in black and white, with smoke machines agogo. Well no, that’s Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard and Brecon train station shut down in 1964. Drat you, Mr Beeching. This particular Brief Encounter is duo Chris and Veronica Perrin, with trumpet, clarinet, saxes, piano, melodica and percussion agogo. It’s jazz with the aid of some new fangled digital looping. Huzzah for the 21st century! Brief Encounter Duo perform at The Plough Chapel at 1pm and the RAFA Club at 4.30pm on Fringe Saturday and the RAFA Club again on Fringe Sunday at 1pm.

SHANGO AND CHEF This year's Best Name Of The Fringe goes to Shango and Chef. I'm hoping it's the Chef From TV's South Park voiced by Isaac Hayes. However, they say they're 'a powerful djembe and guitar two piece that play a selection of rock and blues from the last 50 years'. So it could be Isaac Hayes. Except he died in 2008. Probably not then. Shango and Chef play Ardent Gallery on Friday at 8.30pm and Brecon Tap on Saturday at 4pm.
CRIPPLECREEK My, my if it isn’t the same Cripplecreek I saw many years ago in Aberdare reformed to play Fringe Saturday. Specifically, to perform at Brecon Workmens Club at 5pm. They describe themselves as ‘a collective full of music and mischief from Aberdare’. And actually, I do remember them as a ramshackle of glorious sound. From the picture I see Paul and Justin from Three Brothers and Carl Andrews – will they have superdrummer Carl Harvey? Who knows?

4 BROTHERS 4 Brothers are a South Wales based brotherhood whose music evokes the rich country harmonies and spirit of a sound that has influenced generations. There are two of them. So don't go expecting a four piece like The Beatles or The Four Tops. Actually, I'm not sure whether this sort of trickery is entirely legal. Ask for half your money back. Mind you, entry is free and they are fab. They play Ardent Gallery on Saturday at 2pm.
THE PARCEL OF ROGUEs Folk rock is dead! Long live folk rock! They say: 'We're not a finger-in-the-ear type of folk band, by any means.' Well I for one, would pay good money to see that anyway. If you did not know, the finger-in-the-ear technique is one engaged by beardy folkies to hear what they're singing. Specifically, to hear if they're singing in tune or not. A bit like when you've been swimming. Rogueish. They play Fringe Saturday at The Workmans at 12.30pm and Brecon Rugby Club at 3pm.
MOON GOOSE Moon Goose crawl out of the primal swamp and take a good look around. The bird flaps madly around a barn with a load of guitars strapped to one wing and a synthesizer on the other. Made out of bits of comet and whalebone, Moon Goose music throws a jagged beam of light in the darkness. Duchamp put a toilet in an art gallery. Moon Goose put music in a bag and shake it around until it's in bits. Okay? The Muse Fringe Saturday 8.45pm.
THE SEMANTICS The musical equivalent of Trigger's broom. Over 20 odd years, every band member has changed umpteen times each bringing something different to the set. The Semantics are Fringe Festival veterans - no not Vietnam and no not administering medicine to farmyard animals, or worse - no, they've been coming to our little town music festival for years now. Catch them at The Workmans Club, The Wellington or The Clarence. They're guaranteed not to play Sex On Fire.
THE JAW Let’s face it, most biogs from bands are very poor. Great musicians, great singers but no-one to write a sentence. All except The Jaw. Blimey, they have a proper biog written. Well done! They say: ‘Performances from The Jaw often feature levels of boy-girl swordplay, radioactive makeup and skin on show some conservatives may find offensive.’ And ‘One third harsh on the ear, two thirds easy on the eye’. They sound like The Sisters Of Mercy, a bit. The Jaw play The Muse on Fringe Friday at 9.30pm
