From the Festival Organisers

'Brecon Jazz is ‘35’ years old. This makes it something of a veteran for a festival, but in human years, it’s an age with the future all still ahead.

Our title of ‘The Spirit of the Festival’ refers to a history. Everyone who knows and loves Brecon Jazz will understand that it is this essence of the festival, its ups and downs of music and ‘clouds’, their meanings and memories, that endures.

Brecon Jazz is a unique and creative expression of a particular genre of music, but in the involvement of so many in the community, of musicians and stakeholders, it is a ‘magic’ widely shared and experienced across the whole town.

We have worked to sustain this spirit, specifically from 2016 to the present, with the support in particular of the Town Council, its previous and current Mayors. Our thanks go to them, to the amazing, loyal audience, supporters, funders, teams, suppliers, volunteers – and of course the musicians. It’s all up to you now!

We are delighted to welcome you all to Brecon and to the 35th year of the Brecon Jazz Festival.

The Brecon Jazz festival is a world renowned event and is something that really puts our town on the map. The Town

Council wholeheartedly supports the festival and is keen to help it be a success so that the event grows in a sustainable way. I would like to give my personal thanks to everyone involved for preparing and delivering this outstanding festival.

I'm encouraged to see local people in our community working together to deliver a diverse range of music for Breconians and guests from further afield.

Enjoy the music, our hospitality, our town.' Councillor Manny Trailor, Mayor of Brecon

Friday 10th Aug JAZZ GUITAR DUO

FEATURING TREFOR OWEN & ANDY HULME

2:15 - 3:15pm at Ty Helyg Lounge Trefor Owen, has a unique approach to improvisation, and is one of the foremost jazz guitar teachers in the

UK with over thirty years’ experience teaching at the

highest level in Britain, Europe and the USA. For eight

years, between 2000 and 2008, he led a team of international guitarists performing and tutoring at the North Wales

International Jazz Guitar Festival and Summer School, the biggest jazz guitar event in the world, where his teaching won annual applause, and has since been resident tutor at each of the highly renowned bi-annual jazz guitar weekends presented by North Wales Jazz.

SIDE BY SIDE HUMANITARIAN AID TO

REFUGEES a charitable fundraiser by IAN SHAW

6.00pm -7.15pm at St Mary’s Stage

We are very fortunate that Ian – between gigs in Canada, The USA, and Italy, as well as touring Britain – is able to appear.

This is in part, because Ian has fond memories of playing Brecon Jazz Festival in the past.

Ian Shaw’s journey from St Asaph, North Wales to International singing star via stand up comedian, producer and

broadcaster is spectacular. After a music degree, he honed his performance skills on the alternative comedy circuit alongside Julian Clary, Rory Bremner and Jo Brand, and it shows. Be prepared to be fulsomely entertained.

SIDE BY SIDE first met and a strong partnership developed resulting in Ian becoming a Trustee of the charity. It is entirely typical of Ian, the humanitarian, that he is donating his time for this fundraising concert, for free.

ARTEPHIS & The UNTOLD ORCHESTRA

2:00pm - 3:15pm at Guildhall Theatre

Brecon Jazz Festival and Jazz Futures continue to present their

showcase for the ‘sounds of new generation jazz’ and rising younger jazz performers. This concert features two ‘fluid’ ensembles:

Artephis, directed by James Girling, and Aaron Wood, and the Untold Orchestra, founded by Sam Davies. Together, they create a new, Northern multi-lineup produced especially for BJF2018, and supported by the Brecon Beacons National Parks Authority, Sustainable Development Fund (BBNPA-SDF) and Brecon Jazz Club.

THE TOM SMITH SEPTET

Brecon Jazz Festival and Jazz Futures continues to present their

‘showcase’ for younger jazz performers. This band is led by Tom

Smith, Graduate of Royal academy of music and BBC Young Jazz Musician Finalist in 2014 and 2016. The band includes many of the most talked about young jazz musicians working in the UK today. Each member of the band work with other groups or

leaders in their own right, with this line up drawing from the swing and blues traditions.

The Septet’s unbounded energy and enthusiasm will get your head nodding and your feet tapping. Featuring new

compositions and arrangements of jazz standards, the band provides an exciting, unique and uplifting evening of music – it’s an experience not to miss!

SOUNDS OF CUBA

MAITE HONTELÉ & the Eliane Correa Afro-Cuban sextet 5:30pm - 6:45pm at Guildhall Theatre

If you love Cubano Son and Salsa this concert is both unique and a ‘must’ go to. Maite Hontelé is one of world’s finest

exponent of this mix of Spanish, African & Latin rhythms on trumpet. See these reviews –

‘She is the best in the world, what a delight! The ways she plays is extraordinary, outstanding!’ (Oscar D´León – Venezuela salsa star). The repertoire includes a mix of songs from her latest albums, and together with son Cubano, bolero classics Maite Hontelé has toured major festivals in Colombia, at the North Sea Jazz Festival, and in many countries including South

Korea, Malaysia, America, Israel and Mexico. In addition, from 2011 onwards she is every half year present on Dutch stages,

and this including the opportunity for a first and special Brecon Jazz appearance.

Maite is backed by Eliane Correa & features some of the finest UK-based Cuban and international musicians. Eliane is

described as one of the freshest new sounds to come out of Havana, bringing her own take on ‘Latin’ style to the mix.

Saturday 11th Aug

PAVEL ZLÁMAL PQ Czech Quartet

with special guest Xenia Porteous, violin 7pm - 8:15pm at St Mary’s Stage

Expect a mix of youthful vigour, virtuosic instrumental skills and infectious fun from PQ, the Czech band led by

saxophonist and clarinettist Pavel Zlámal. Former students from the jazz faculty of the prestigious Janáček Academy in Brno, the vibrantly cultural second city of Czech Republic, PQ plays original compositions as well as newly invented

versions of standard tunes and references to the beauty of Moravian folklore. The style of playing is rooted in the modern jazz tradition whilst the interpretations draw upon a wider context resulting in a heady mix of familiarity and surprise which will keep you on your toes and keep your toes tapping! Ok…maybe your body twitching as well…!

The launch of their latest album, with the quizzical title “Inevitable Rods” had the Brno audience in stitches when they

were not listening open mouthed to the virtuosic display of pianist Martin Konvička, Slovak bassist Juraj Valenčik and

Basel based drummer Václav Pálka. The music ranges from the almost inaudible, with judicious use of silence, via a bluesy

and gospel tunefulness, through to cascades of rhythm and sound within an impressively coordinated ensemble..

Saturday 11th Aug

SOUTH AFRICAN JAZZ SEPTET

Directed by Adam Glasser, featuring Byron Wallen and a Tribute to Hugh Masekela

8:30pm - 9:45pm at Guildhall Theatre

Specially formed for the Brecon Jazz Festival 2018, this group brings together for the first time in collaboration, South

African pianist and harmonica player Adam Glasser with trumpeter and master improviser/composer Byron Wallen.

They both share a long and deep connection with township jazz and more specifically a working and a personal relationship

with the late Hugh Masekela, to whom they will pay tribute with a selection of his lesser known township jazz anthems.

(Bra) Hugh Masekela’s music legacy spans a truly Pan-African range of styles and grooves, and the group draws on some of

the lesser known compositions associated with the trumpet legends inimitable brand of township jazz. This ranges from the

iconic early sixties album ’Jazz Epistles Verse 1’ up to the present day

.

ELAINE DELMAR QUINTET

2:00pm - 3:15pm at Guildhall Theatre

Elaine’s musical path has taken her in many directions. She has made numerous radio and television broadcasts and

concerts singing with small groups, big bands and symphony orchestras around the world, starring with Michel Legrand, Stephane Grappelli, Andy Williams, Benny Carter and Herb Ellis amongst others. Equally at home in a concert hall, night

club or theatre, Elaine thrives on communicating with her audience.

HARMONICA JAZZ

Toots Thielemans & Beyond 3.30pm - 4:45pm at Wellington Suite

Adam Glasser leads on chromatic harmonica with

this brilliant quartet and a selection of jazz compositions associated with the legendary Toots Thielemans, as well as

contemporary jazz and latin standards not normally associated with the mouth organ. Adam is one of the UK’s leading

chromatic harmonica players. Raised in South Africa and the UK, studied jazz piano in Paris (1979) and at Berklee College (1981), then back in UK and playing Festivals across Europe. Thielemans became famous as a master of two techniques hitherto unknown in jazz – viz whistling, and playing the harmonica. A remarkable musician who adapted the advanced

harmonies, hair trigger accents and nimble melodies of the bebop idiom to a 19th-century instrument originally intended for the more leisurely rhythms of Austrian folk music.

Sunday 12th Aug

‘SATORI’ – JOSEPHINE DAVIES TRIO

Josephine Davies (saxophones) James Maddren (drums) Dave Whitford (bass) 5:15pm - 6:30pm at St Mary’s Stage

Josephine Davies is a much in demand presence on the London jazz scene in both small group and large ensemble settings as both a Saxophonist and Composer. St Marys provides an ideal venue for the Satori* Project (2017), which has been

variously described as Inventive, Lyrical (Jazzwise), Spiritual, Spiralling, Joyful (UK Vibe), Fluent, Imaginative (Jazz Man), and

Irrepressible Tunefulness (Downbeat). This is a project that combines Davies seeking freedom of expression with an interest

in Japanese philosophy and lifestyle from where the title originates.

Expect to hear contemporary material from the current trio together with other more straightahead influences, from the

classic jazz repertoires of Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson and John Coltrane, and readily accessible to most jazz listeners.

The trio is deliberately chordless and features bassist Dave Whitford, and James Maddren. both gifted and in demand as the

‘first call’ basist & percussionist of choice, for both the younger, and the more established generation of jazz musicians in

the UK. Maddren is no stranger to Wales either, as he is also a drums tutor at RWCMD’s Jazz Department (Cardiff).

Sunday 12th Aug

JIM HARTS 'Cloudmakers'TRIO 7pm - 8:15pm at Guildhall Theatre

The Cloudmakers trio represents the culmination of over a decade of musical growth between Hart, Janisch and Smith.

With their uncompromising approach, Cloudmakers Trio has been known to effortlessly marry the complex with

accessibility, the improvised with composed, and showcase original music that lies somewhere between New York’s

downtown sound and the modern European tradition. Their music defies easy category yet draws influence from a diverse

range of traditions, featuring the under-exploited format of the vibraphone trio. While pushing the boundaries of what can be done with this instrumentation they remain devoted to in the moment risk taking, a deep groove and strong melodies. Jim Hart is one of the most in demand musicians on the European jazz and alternative music scene as a soloist and

sideman on both drums and vibraphone. Now living in Alsace, France, Jim was resident in London from 1996 – 2014. The other members of this lineup are equally stunning – Janisch is described as “virtuosic and emphatic” (The Guardian), and Dave Smith is equally well known for his West African percussion and jazz drumming collaborations.

Sunday 12th Aug

CZECH CONNECTION: Jarda Stastny and Friends 8:30pm - 9:45pm at Wellington Suite

Join us for this final set of the jazz weekend, and expect a real swinging upbeat foot tapping night in great company.

This concert and lineup is led by Czech pianist Jarda Stastny and horn player Rod Paton, together with other members of

Zlámal PQ quartet and a few guests joining in. Jarda and Rod’s collaboration is of many

years standing, and their CD is highly recommended.

Peter Graham (pseudonym for European lineups of Jaroslav Stastny) currently professor at JAMU, Brno, and was artistic

director of Exposition of the New Music Festival. His greatest interest is in composition.

Graham says, that it “grows as does timber in a forest”. He is concerned with creation itself rather than with the cultivation

of the personality: ” I am what I do.” Several of his works have met with great success at performances in Great Britain,

Germany, Poland, Austria, Italy, Romania, Holland, Sweden, France and the USA.
