Brecon Fringe BRECON FRINGE 2019: FOUR DAYS OF FUN FOR EVERYONE To paraphrase Suzanne Vega: You’ll find me on the fringes, left of centre, in the outskirts, off of the strip. And you don’t get much further off the strip than this. This is Brecon. Although in the case of Brecon Fringe Festival, left of centre has become the main event, while retaining its goofy eclectic status. It’s a four day stint that offers rock gore from Tokyo Taboo, fairy folk from The Stir Ye Girls and prison songs from The Gandy Dancers. Keep an eye out for looper utilising jazzers Brief Encounter, washboard utilising Washboard Resonators and the charisma utilising Killjoys’ Jess Perry. Check out the Vinyl Sessions outside at The Muse – it’s like records have never gone away. (They did but now they’re back with a vengeance, loud and proud and hopefully without too many scratches). There are more gigs than you can shake a stick at – if that’s your idea of fun. All of which are kept updated on the Fringe listings website www.breconfringe.co.uk. Have a good one but remember – please respect your fellow Fringe Festivalgoer and try to visit every venue. And of course, post your pictures on the Brecon Fringe 2019 Facebook page.

Band Biogs TOKYO TABOO Tokyo Taboo’s singer Dolly Daggerz has been described as big, brash and boisterous and been compared to Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Wendy James from Transvision Vamp. SCRIBBLE MAN It's the infrequent return of Scribble Man to the Hours with songs about deceased authors, moving to the countryside and parallel girls. There may even be some songs from Greed The Movie from the composer himself. Scribble Man - a lifestyle occupation. And one or two songs from new movie in production Bungalowland. SICKNOTE STEVE Do you like your blues played on rudimentary instruments and hollered as if your life depended on it? Well, you’ve come to the right place. Sicknote Steve is all over Brecon Fringe like a cheap suit – Brecon Workman’s Social Club, The Clarence Inn, Brecon Tap. Steve has been bringing his feral, howling blues and that authentic Seasick sound to little old Brecon for a good few years now. Why, he’s practically a Fringe fixture. Don’t miss him.
STIR YE GIRLS Now these are something. Stir Ye Girls are proper, beautiful, Celtic, Irish, Cumbrian folk. Carolyn Francis, Bev Whelan and Mary Dunsford – fiddle, whistle and harp and boy can they play? This weekend they play Pilgrims and Ardent Gallery. It’s trios like this that really set Brecon Fringe apart from other festivals – probably playing across the road from a covers band playing Sweet Child Of Mine. Sublime folk.

KILLJOYS We are Killjoys, we play pop music. This is what they say and who is going to argue with that? Not me anyway, I’m a music loving sheep. Probably the best promo pic this year. A cross between that advert for Scottish Widows, based on that film The French Lieutenant's Woman, something out of Blade Runner and a hair dye packet in Savers. The effect from Jess Perry is quite stunning however. Budding pop stars take note: this is how you do a publicity pic. Killjoys play The Muse on Saturday at 7.30pm.
VINYL SESSIONS Vinyl is coming back! Whoop whoop! Wukka wukka, all this scratching’s making me itch. Or most likely some dudes playing their favourite tunes off twelve inches of plastics with a hole in the middle (to quote Man). Vying for turntable attention: DJ Wilf, DJ Neilly B, DJ Matt Reynolds, DJ Ennio Maccaroni, DJ Paul Nevin, DJ Nik and Tony C, DJ Ian Milton and BGfm DJ Nigel Evans. Friday, Saturday and Sunday at The Muse.
THE GANDY DANCERS One of the best names at this year’s Fringe and one of my pick of the weekend. Gandy Dancer is a term used for early railroad workers in the USA – a gandy being the five foot long lining bar or lever used to keep the track in alignment. The dancers, usually immigrants and ethnic minorities, would sing while they worked. These Gandy Dancers come from Aberdare and are seasoned hands in this business we call ‘show’. Catch them at Ardent Gallery on Saturday at 2.45pm.
