Finding School News on the New Website There are many different areas on the website where you can access school news. School news is different from the Master Calendar or Announcement page, because it covers events that have already happened.

One source of news is located on the Academics page.

The Academics page contains information relevant to learning in the classroom and contains the Teaching and Learning blog, faculty spotlight, academics news, and academics photo gallery.

If you want to keep up with the fine and performing arts, go to the Arts page to see the arts news feed and photo gallery. The Athletics page also has an athletics news feed and athletics photo gallery along with team pages for each athletic team.

The Spirituality page contains the spirituality photo gallery, while the Learning through Service section of spirituality is located on the School Life page.

The School Life page is dedicated to learning outside of the classroom. It contains the Serving Saints photo gallery, student reflections on their service projects, Spunky’s Science Spot blog, the communication class blog, Dr. Mac’s blog, the school life news feed, the school life photo gallery, the Parent Press, The Epistle, and The Epistle II.

National Merit Commended Scholars: Funso

Fagbongbe, Dylan Gibson, Mary Lindsey Hannahan, Josh Harrelson, Bren McMaken, Sarah Williams In October each year St. Paul’s juniors, along with approximately 1.5 million other collegebound students, enter the National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the PSAT. In September of the senior year, 34,000 are designated Commended Scholars and 17,600 recognized as Semi-Finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program or the National Achievement Scholarship Program. The National Achievement Scholarship Program is an academic competition to provide recognition for outstanding Black American high school students. Based on academics, service, character, leadership, activities, and the SAT, these Semi-Finalists compete to advance to Finalist. In February the Finalists are named. National Merit Scholarships, National Achievement Scholarships, college sponsored scholarships, and corporate sponsored scholarships worth in excess of forty-eight million dollars are offered to Finalists.

Over the last four years, St. Paul’s has had 20 National Merit Commended Scholars, 16 National Merit Finalists, one National Merit Achievement Finalist and one National Merit Hispanic Scholar.

4th Grade Fizzy Foamy Science Lab In Dr. Keesee’s Fizzy Science Lab, students learned about color and light. They performed four different experiments to learn about color, light, and the variables that can affect an experiment.

Students had a lot of fun and were engaged in every experiment.

St. Paul’s Scholar’s Bowl Team Undefeated in District Play The Upper School Scholar’s Bowl team was undefeated in district play on Friday and have qualified for the regional tournament in March.

Players on Friday represented each grade and are pictured above: Matthew D’Alonzo from 9th, Danielle Williamson from 10th, Seth Polansky from 11th, and Cam Williamson from 12th.

AROUND CAMPUS St. Paul’s Students Learn About the Solar System

7th Grade Students Give Planet Presentations

2nd Grade Planetarium Display 2nd grade classes studied the Solar System. Each child drew a planet out of a hat for their selection.

Students did their research in class and made their planets at home. Students then brought the planets to school to present them. Their parents visited and viewed the planets with their children in a Planetarium display.

In Mrs. Finlen’s 7th grade science classes, student pairs researched a planet. Students collected information about their planet, including the planet’s size and number of moons or rings.

Students then designed an interactive presentation through Glogster that included pictures, information, and video. Mrs. Finlen also taught students how to properly cite their sources for this project.

Lower School and 7th Grade Investigates Astrolab In January, the PreK-2 and 7th grade students went to the theatre in order to enter the Astrolab. The Astrolab is a large gray dome that was set up to allow students to enter and study constellations.

Mrs. Finlen taught each grade how to search for constellations by starting with Orion. She also gave an overview of the Greek myths surrounding the names of the constellations.

The students really enjoyed the project and were inspired to express their creativity in the layout of the interactive poster. Each presentation not only highlighted the students’ research, it also showcased their own style.

5th Grade Students Meet for GEMs

On Feb. 8th, St. Paul’s 5th grade voluntary program Girls’ Enrichment Ministry (GEMs) met and talked about God’s love. Students learned about agape love through examples and scripture. Learning about God’s everlasting love for mankind inspired the girls to show agape love toward others.

The girls listened to a story about a dog’s love for its owner and compared it to God’s love. Afterward, GEMs covered 1 Corinthians 13:4 from the Bible.

Students were also given bookmarks with the verse John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Community Service Mrs. Kim Barnard’s second grade class volunteered to help pack bags of food for the Robbins Elementary Backpack Project on February 13.

Leah Robinson, Damien Hanenkrat, Zachary Vickers, Landon Smith, Mary Brown, Kate Donahoe, Stephen Conrad, Allie Whigham, Sarah Jones, Elinor Gibson, Margaret Myers, Julianna Ramo, Maggie Sullivan, Loraine Burgel, Makenzie Scaturro, Owen Beaverstock, Pack Stabler, Joseph Helmsing, Taylor Citrin, and Win Lamberth made cards for the bags and included a special sticker for each of the students enrolled in this program.

Lower and Middle School Students Learn About Marine Life Through the Discovery Touch Lab Stephanie Serra met with each grade level and gave them an overview about marine life. She discussed the usefulness of marine life for food and medicine and the environmental impact humans have on the ocean. She allowed students to investigate different sea animals through the discovery touch lab. Students were engaged while listening to Mrs. Serra talk and will be prepared to confront environmental issues in the future through what they learned.

Two Seniors Sign Athletic Scholarships

On February 7, 2012, at the Dr. Monte L. Moorer Theater lobby, Lacy Dent and Ryan Myles participated in a signing ceremony. Lacy Dent, the top female track and field athlete in the State and Heptathlon winner for the last two years, signed with the University of Alabama, and Ryan Myles, a wide receiver, signed to play football at Samford University.

St. Paul’s Students Selected for Volleyball All-State Teams

St. Paul’s would like to congratulate the volleyball players that have been selected for the All-State teams. These students were engaged and inspired to work hard this season and their efforts have paid off.

Both St. Paul’s Boys and Girls Indoor Track Teams are 5A State Champions!

It was truly a great weekend to be a SAINT! Lacey Dent set records in the triple jump and the 60-meter hurdles, and Kylen Towner set a state-meet record in the 60-yard dash.

Coach Jim Tate noted the win was a team effort and is proud of his players for the way they represented St. Paul’s and themselves in terms of competitiveness, class, character and sportsmanship. According to Tate, the team showed great ‘teamsmanship’ and support throughout the entire meet. He is also grateful for the support of the team’s parents for supplying snacks, drinks and meals for the competing athletes. Coach Tate is also thankful for the great send-off that began with a chapel service and a meal at the home of Michelle and Jim Spires on Wednesday evening.

Floore Returns Determined to Win Senior shooting guard Madison Floore was named the 1-5A Girls Basketball Player of the Week. She came off the bench to provide a spark in wins over regional opponent Spanish Fort and 6A powerhouse McGill-Toolen. Madison returned with a vengeance to the Lady Saints lineup after suffering a season-ending ACL injury last season. She inspired her teammates and modeled how hard work and determination can lead to a victory.

SAINTS’ NIGHT OUT aints’ Night Out, our annual fundraiser, is only a S few days away, but it is not too late to make your reservation or donate to the silent auction. February Houndstooth - Next Meeting Thursday, April 19 February Meeting Notes Michele Morgan, Lower School Parent Council Chair, opened the meeting by introducing Anna Moore who gave the Invocation, which was the school prayer.

All School Meeting •Athletic Director Garry Strang. He talked about

a few of the great athletes that we have at St. Paul’s. The athletes included Cooper Brown, Grace

Molyneux, Grace Rebarchak, Dan Drew, Lacey Dent, and Emily Messer. He also introduced the new Head Football Coach Steve Mask.

•Head Football Coach Steve Mask. He discussed

taking over as the head coach for the football team.

He has been at St. Paul’s for three years as the defensive coordinator.

•Volunteer Natasha Kendall. Update on Parent Acquisitions for Saints’ Night Out.

•Development Office Anna Moore. Update on green

receipts. Anna added that if anyone would like to help with keeping up with green receipts it would be greatly appreciated.

•Director of Development Carey Baumhauer Golden.

Cool School is on Friday. Please come. You need to be there at 5:30, no later than 5:45. Please wear Blue/Navy. It needs to be St. Paul’s clothing though. If your child is in the preK – 2nd, we need the parents to stay and wait for your children. It will be over by 7:00 AM.

•Saints’ Night Out Chair Susan Smith. She talked

about New Live Packages that are online. Also talked about the specific packages being offered for the grade level classes. Examples are the Pre-K that were done with “My favorite pictures,” Kindergarten “What makes you smile,” 1st grade “What are Friends,” etc. They are all online and can be purchased early.

Lower School Meeting • Cindy McFadden – talked about the Dogwood Book Fair. They did well and earned about $8700 • Molly Broders – talked about Teacher Appreciation for PreK-2. She handed out Shamrocks and also handed out flyers about what was coming up for Teacher Appreciation week March 26 – 30.

• Running with the Saints will be on March 11.

There will be a 4:05 stroller start for walkers/ runners with strollers. Need to sign up by the 5th if you want to get a T-Shirt.
