January Houndstooth - Next meeting February 17th • Carol Erickson, SPS Auction co-chair, gave the invocation. She read an inspiring passage on encouragement.

• Victor Helmsing, Assistant Headmaster and Director of the Upper School, reported that we are still working hard on meeting our goals for the Annual Fund • Marty Lester, Headmaster, reported that the Sophomores are just back from their trip. The manager of the hotel said to Marty that the SPS students are not only nice to adult staff, but the staff observed them being nice to each other, and what a refreshing observation!

Marty also thanked Kim and Carol for their hard work on the auction, and on behalf of their volunteers, said how much he appreciates the work we all do.

• Scott McDonald, Director of the Middle School, reported on cyber safety/internet safety instruction that is being taught. They are also in the middle of Character Building lessons which teach these impressionable kids about how to treat themselves and others with dignity and respect. It is the 3rd year that SPS has taught this. Scott also reported on NetSmart Kids, a 6th grade curriculum to teach responsibility with computer use. There is a component for parent controls (NetNanny) available for the parents and cell phone use/protection, as well as internet safety. Scott reminded us that SPS tries to be proactive, rather than reactive, to problems/potential problems. In April, Drug Ed starts for middle schoolers. This is a curriculum from the Drug Ed Council that teaches about brain development and the effect of drugs and alcohol on the brain. Scott said 96 8th graders are signed up to leave at 3:30am for the Washington DC trip.

Scott reported on the bullying and harassment policy. He called the approach “safety and best education.” SPS wants to be cutting edge.

• Julie Taylor, Director of Admissions, reported that 14 new students started last week. We will be getting 2 more from Nassau in February. She encouraged the Council to “talk up” SPS. Prospective student testing is next Saturday.

• Libba Latham, Upper School Chair, reported that we all will want to see “Little Shop of Horrors,” the SPS Big Show for this year.

• Kim Klyce, Saints’ Night Out Chair, introduced her chairs to report on the various activities of the SPS Auction, to be held March 31, at a new venue this year: Space 301. Ticket prices will still be $50.

• Laurie Sullivan, Treasurer, reported on financials: the auction put $78,000 into the SPS budget last year; 25% from admissions tickets, 12% from parent donations, 9% from the street party, 10% from the raffle and 35% from the silent auction. All council members were encouraged to help with the silent auction items from parents.

• Katie Courtney, Public Relations, reported on t-shirts. They are $12.00 and will be sold to the Lower School students, since the bigger shirts do not sell as well.

• Anna Moore, Staff Liaison, reported on auction items, the parent acquisition letter, and the change in that the parents were mailed the donation form this year. Parents can choose to do an ad for the program, donate to the grade level basket, or donate $ or an item.

Grade reps will call this year to see if parents got packet and if they have any questions.

Kim had no report on acquisitions for Lisa. Kim reported for Lori that Susan Carley will be one of our caterers this year (desserts).

Carol reported on student art. She said the 3rd grade is making a cookbook and it will be presold. Alumni and students will be contacted to display and sell.

Some of the live auction items again this year which are always a hit: puppy, hunting trip, progressive dinner at a restaurant (we haven’t done this before but McGill did and it went over BIG!), Dragonfly pkg.

Another new item will be the “wine grab” where parents can donate a table wine, wrap in a brown bag, and guests can purchase the wrapped wine for $25.

February Meeting to Highlight Community Service at St. Paul’s Next year will mark the 10-Year Anniversary of the St. Paul’s Service Leadership partnership with Augusta Evans. In 2001, St. Paul’s parent Henry Callaway, our students, and Community Service Director Leslie Lerner formed the Scouting Program at the school for physically and mentally challenged students. Every week, students in the Service Leadership Class serve as patrol leaders, and every year our students put on events and parties for the scouts.

The Augusta Evans Scouting Program is among many projects our Community Service Program offers our students in the community.

Since the program’s inception at St. Paul’s, hundreds of children, adults, and elderly have been served by your children and thousands of hours have been invested into our community.

Please join Leslie Lerner and our Service Leadership Class on February 17 at 9:30 in the theatre for a snapshot of what our students do in the community.

Service Leadership Class Collects Over 300 Canned Goods on the 100th Day of School

To celebrate the 100th Day of School, in conjunction with the Everyday Math program, Lower School children brought canned goods from home and counted them into groups of 100. All items were donated to the Service Leadership Class to distribute to the homeless and hungry in the community.

SPS Parents Around Campus

Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Dennis Jorgensen visited his daughter Nora’s Second Grade Class. Dr. Jorgensen talked about the skeletal system and how joints work within our bodies.

Renee Mullenix is pictured with her daughter Danielle teaching Zumba to the Lower School students. P.E. teacher Judy Griffin said all the children enjoyed the workout!

Coaches Perry and Messer Recognized

Head Football Coach Jimmy Perry was named “5A Coach of the Year” (voted on by his peers) in Montgomery by the Alabama Football Coaches Association. Pictured left: Coach Perry lip sings to a Hank Williams Jr. song at a Pep Rally.

Pictured right: Head Basketball Coach and Dean of Students Jimmy Messer was recognized at the Pep Rally as the “All-Time Winningest Boys Basketball Head Coach” at St. Paul’s with seven consecutive winning seasons. The team’s win against UMS-Wright on January 11, 2011, marked Coach Messer’s 125th win at St. Paul’s.

The Lady Saints defeated Spanish Fort 50-44 and the three guards had outstanding performances. These students are the first female basketball players to be honored by the club.
