FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear St. Paul’s Family, My wife, Jen, would tell you how much I love to read. Books, magazines, and articles of all sorts fill my office and are (far too often) strewn across any horizontal surface near me. Although I am not a big fiction reader, I am endlessly drawn to nonfiction writing across a crazy spectrum – from history to politics to psychology to gardening to sports to travel to education to…. You get the picture. One of the most interesting aspects of being a daily reader is the uncanny way in which connections can be found between wildly disparate topics.

One of the most valuable books I have read, and one to which I keep coming back to as an educator and leader, is Mindset by Dr. Carol Dweck. You may have read it, but even if you haven’t, you’ve heard the ideas it contains, such as the difference between a “fixed mindset” and a “growth mindset.” In short, the central thesis of Dr. Dweck’s work is that a person’s mindset – how one views oneself and one’s ability – profoundly affects the level of success one achieves over time.

This is true across a wide variety of fields, ages, and domains. It is even true at the organizational level: Organizations whose members collectively possess a “growth” mindset far outperform those with a “fixed” mindset.

As an institution, St. Paul’s embodies the growth mindset. This spirit is evident throughout the school, from trustees planning the strategic improvement of the school to the educators who challenge 4 | Epistle II

and support their students to new heights, and to the administrators and staff whose efforts allow our teachers to do their noble work. You will be heartened to know that we are fully committed to growing and evolving as a school of excellence.

Examples of this organizational growth mindset abound: • Academics at St. Paul’s are already truly excellent. However, we have committed to an ongoing, continuous cycle of programmatic elevation. Beginning with the renovation of our math program upon which we have commenced this year, we will test every discipline, and adjust as needed, to ensure that St. Paul’s always lives at the forefront of K-12 education.

Similarly, we will continually seek to develop innovative programs to better serve our students, and to always put their needs first.

• As you know, St. Paul’s has been significantly impacted by new competitive rules implemented by the Alabama High School Athletic Association. However, exemplifying the growth mindset, our coaches and athletes have met the challenges head on. I am proud to relate that through their spirit, determination, and hard work, our Saints teams have continued to experience great success on the fields and courts this year.

• One of the most concrete examples of the organizational growth mindset here is literally that – a gorgeous new Student Commons building! Far more than just concrete, brick, and glass, however, the Student Commons represents a tangible

example of how the St. Paul’s community has stepped confidently into the future to write the next chapters of its long and storied history. This transformative facility will support expanded academic and social programs here in ways that we are just beginning to realize.

• There are many other equally important examples of the growth mindset here.

We’ve committed to creating a more beautiful and functional campus, to using data more effectively in our decisionmaking and business practices, to ensuring that every dollar you’ve invested is spent carefully and intentionally, and to better partnering with our families by expanding our communications and seeking parent feedback.

While we are excited about the growth of St. Paul’s this year, we are even more excited about what lies ahead in upcoming years.

What one word would you use to describe St. Paul’s?

BUSY. There’s never a dull moment at St. Paul’s. Whether you’ve sprinted up the hill to make it to class before the second bell or flagged down a teacher for a “five day prior form”, you’ve contributed to St. Paul’s busy atmosphere.

Any words of wisdom as a St. Paul’s senior?

There are only twenty-four hours in a day! If I’ve learned anything at St. Paul’s, it’s that there is not enough time in the world to do everything you want to do the way you want to do it. You have to prioritize, and you have to realize that you won’t get to everything. Trust me. I’ve tried.

What is the best advice you have ever received?

According to Puerto Rican rapper Wisin, everyone should “aprovecha la vida [porque] la vida una sola es.” In other words, take advantage of your life because you’ve only got one!

What is your favorite thing to do outside of school?

Party planning! I love everything about it — the theme, the party favors, the music, the food, and, most importantly, the people! My record is four birthday parties in ten weeks!

What do you plan to study in college?

I’ll be studying neuroscience and Spanish. You may call me a nerd, but I am pumped for both! It took me an entire two seconds to select what I wanted to study.

Do you feel any one person, family or teacher, has been your inspiration for education?

Mrs. Iris and Mrs. Austin have certainly been the inspiration for my education! I will never forget Mrs. Iris coming into our classrooms with her little Pavo (“Turkey” in Spanish) or teaching us “Feliz Navidad.” As for Mrs. Austin, I’ve been fortunate to have her as a teacher for three years. I will never forget belting out Nicky Jam’s “El Perdón” in her Spanish III class or watching everyone’s favorite language learning show, Extra.

Ladi Fagbongbe What one word would you use to describe St. Paul’s?

Challenging, but rewarding.

Any words of wisdom as a St. Paul’s senior?

Academically, first semester can be hectic because you have to apply to colleges. Start working on college applications as early as possible to avoid scrambling to meet deadlines. Second semester brings with it the excitement of graduation. It is tempting to succumb to “senioritis,” but you need to finish well. Above all, remember to enjoy your last year at St. Paul’s. Senior year goes by quickly, so make sure you savor every moment of it.

What is the best advice you have ever received?

My parents have always told me to work diligently in every facet of my life, especially my education, because it will always pay dividends.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of school?

I have always enjoyed playing soccer, both on the school’s team and on local club teams.

What do you plan to study in college?

I intend to have a major in the field of science, but the specific major will depend on the college that I attend. I plan to study Spanish as well.

Do you feel any one person, family or teacher, has been your inspiration for education?

My parents have always been my inspiration for education.

Embracing

Any words of wisdom as a St. Paul’s senior?

Mr. Powell reminds the spring show cast every year that “you are only going to get out how much you put into it.” I’ve found that to be true for every activity or academic subject at school.

What is the best advice you have ever received?

Be nice, be empathetic: try your best to put yourself in others’ shoes, even when you face a situation that is not immediately comprehensible.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of school?

I love to paint and design/create birthday cards to give to others.

What do you plan to study in college?

I plan on studying mathematics and math-related subjects. In addition, I would love to pursue an art minor.

Do you feel any one person, family or teacher, has been your inspiration for education?

I’m immensely grateful for Mrs. Stone’s support in my career at St. Paul’s; she inspires me to be a better person. I will always look up to her, her kindness, intelligence, charisma, and elegance.

VETERANS DAY 9TH OF NOVEMBER • ASSEMBLY HONORING ALL WHO SERVED

S

t. Paul’s Episcopal School takes pride in honoring our Veterans and active duty military members who have risked their lives for our freedom.

The school held its Annual Veterans Day assembly on Friday, November 9th in the Upper School Gymnasium.

The students and faculty members were greeted by crowds of parents, grandparents, veterans and active duty military members.

The Veterans Day program began with a welcome from Assistant Headmaster, Dr. Scott McDonald and prayer led

by Zac Lambrecht. The colors were presented by the St. Paul’s Boy Scout

Troups 85 and 147 and the Chamber Choir exuberantly sang the National Anthem. Essays were read by grade level winners Henry Hargett (2nd grade), Virginia Merrick (8th grade), and Alex Rosenthal (11th grade).

Current faculty members Lou Courie and Jim Tate were the guest speakers, followed by the 2nd grade’s sign language presentation of “You’re a Grand Old Flag.” To close the program, TAPS was played by St. Paul’s students Conner Wolff and Oliver Hatley, and the assembly dismissed following Dr. Brian Doyle’s rendition of “Amazing Grace” performed on the bagpipes.

ATHLETIC HIGHLIGHTS

VARSITY GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY This year’s girl’s cross-country team entered previously unchartered waters as they were elevated to the 6A level of state competition for the first time in school history. They performed admirably, finishing 3rd as a team in the state meet trailing only perennial 6A powerhouses Homewood and Fort Payne, the defending state champions from last year. On the local scene, our girls were the #2 team in southwest Alabama including both Mobile and Baldwin County schools. The future looks bright because we were a young team with six of our top 10 girls either 7th or 8th graders and the other four either sophomores or juniors.

Next year we look to return our other 28 girls plus some very promising rising 7th graders from our Speedy Saints team who won their Independent Schools league championship this year! Returning are our six varsity letter-winners and four All-County selections, including two girls who were 6A All-State performers. During the season our varsity girls won the Boardwalk Invitational and the Sectional Championship and finished 2nd in five other invitational meets. Our junior high girls were Mobile County Champions and winners of two other invitational meets as well.

Special thanks go to coach Camille Ford for her invaluable assistance in her second year working with our girls program and Chris Conrad who worked with our girls on specific strength development. Many thanks also go to our parents who supported our efforts in every possible way during the season. It is Coach Jim Tate’s hope that next year’s team will be even stronger and that lessons learned and experiences gained will bring about the championship results that we always strive to achieve.

VARSITY BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

The 2018 St. Paul’s boys cross country team overcame injuries to a few key team members to have a successful season. The team was regularly amongst the top three local teams all season. They were the top local team in at least three meets - the Admiral Twilight Invitational, the Challenge of Champions, and the Azalea City Classic. Later in the season, the Saints finished a close third in the Mobile County Championships, just behind 7A powers Baker and McGill. They then finished second place in the 6A Section 1 Championships. The Saints finished their season by finishing fourth out of 23 scoring schools at the 6A State Championship meet. This was a very successful season for the Saints in the first season in 6A. Sophomore John Michael Romanos was our top runner all year. He finished third overall at the County Championship meet. John Michael was named to the All County team, as were his teammates Wilkes Howes and Mac Conwell.

VARSITY FOOTBALL

The 2018 St. Paul’s Football team completed another successful winning season. Finishing third in Region 1 Class 6A with a record of 7-4, the Saints advanced to the first round of state play-offs. Senior AJ Finley signed a Division 1 NCAA Football Scholarship with The University of Mississippi and Junior Jordan Ingram was 1st Team All-State Running Back in Class 6A. Winter 2019 | 15

VARSITY VOLLEYBALL

Varsity Volleyball started a new era this fall. Competing in 6A brought a new and welcomed challenge. Hard work in the off-season prepared our team well for our new level of competition. Our single match competition included familiar rivals such as Bayside, McGill, and Baker, while our weekend tournaments had us battle with storied programs such as Providence Christian, Spanish Fort, Montgomery Academy, and Pelham. This tough competition was meant to prepare us for what we would face in 6A post-season. This preparation paid off as we won Area by beating Saraland in the finals. Then, we swept Pelham to get into the finals of Super Regionals before falling to the eventual State Champions, Spanish Fort. At the 6A State tournament we swept Albertville in the quarterfinals and lost one of the most exciting matches the Saints have been a part of to Hazel Green in a close fifth set loss. We ended our season 35-15 in which 14 of the 15 losses were to teams in the State Tournament in their respective classes. We had three Kiwanis Players of the week (Libby Kirby, Coley Krieg and Carli Rouse); five All Mobile County Players (Libby Kirby, Coley Krieg, Carli Rouse, Lucy Lapeyrouse and Kaylyn Rudolph); three All Coastal Region Players (Libby Kirby, Coley Krieg and Carli Rouse), and two All State in 6A Players (Libby Kirby and Carli Rouse). It was a successful season in which a new challenge was taken on with results that were consistent with the volleyball program’s storied tradition!

VARSITY SWIMMING Our athletes did an outstanding job this season. We were a very young team with no seniors competing.

Our elevation into the combined 6A-7A swimming classification necessitated a new commitment level from the team. Many of them challenged themselves to higher levels of training, both in the water and in the weight room. Coach Tyler Kerns was very pleased with our teams’ attitude throughout all of this season’s challenges.

The varsity swim team had a great season, culminating in a spectacular performance at the 2018 AHSAA State Championships Meet. State qualifiers were: Cheyenne Prevost, Isabella Lord, Lillian Ringold, Ryan LeDoux, Stella Bosio, Palmer Waechter, Sydney Hendryx, Libby Kirby, Mary Howard Singleton, William Jameson, Jacks Mitchell, Noah Prevost, and Stephen Conrad.

azalea TRAIL MAID

meet marley scarborough why did you want to become an azalea trail maid?

Since I was a little girl, I have looked up to the Azalea Trail Maids as princesses, dreaming of joining this “royal” group. Members of my family have served on the court and their joy in this organization added to my dream. Mobile has such a diverse and overflowing community that I wanted to become an ambassador and a role model to other little girls.

what is your favorite memory of being one so far?

So far my favorite memory would have to be the Chicago Thanksgiving trip. It was so much fun to travel with all fifty maids and our advisors. The other maids and volunteers truly have become a second family. The trip was filled with early mornings and packed days, but no matter what event, everyone was up to it. I especially enjoyed how every member of our group got up at dinner and went straight to the dance floor. We truly rocked the house that night on our dinner cruise.

any funny stories?

The funniest story would have to be during our Thanksgiving parade in Chicago. The group in front of us was moving pretty fast, and our dresses only allow us to go a certain speed. However, all fifty maids had to start running in the middle of the parade because we were so far behind and the volunteers were yelling at us to go.

It truly was hilarious to see all of us running to catch up to the group in front.

do you drive in your dress?

We are not allowed to drive in our dresses anymore since it is seen as a safety violation. However, we can be behind the wheel in our top and pantaloons. The rest of the dress is folded up and put into a box in the trunk.

and I thoroughly enjoyed learning about all of it. It was neat to know the reasons behind our port and the architecture of homes I pass all the time. One fact that I talked about in my interview is how Mobile is the port where fire ants were accidentally brough to the United States. I thought it was so random, but it truly has stuck with me.

how did you prepare for the interview process?

I started my sophomore year going to group classes. As the big day started getting closer I did private mock interviews. One of the biggest life savers, though, was my cousin’s “trail book” that was passed down to her by other maids. Everyone adds their own notes or flashcards and I would study through it most nights before bed.

what advice would you give to girls interested in becoming a trail maid?

Make sure that you are prepared with Mobile’s history and current events. Also be confident, as the most important part of the interview is that you show who you are. The judges want to see you enjoy talking about yourself and your interests.

have you learned anything interesting about mobile you did not know before?

Mobile has such a long history

LOU COURIE Faculty Spotlight Written By: Allison Castle In early December, the St. Paul’s Advancement Team had our biannual Epistle II planning meeting. When I heard that the Faculty Spotlight for the spring edition was going to be focused on Lou Courie, I jumped on the assignment. What an honor to write an article on his tenure at St. Paul’s.

So, on a beautiful Wednesday morning, I got to sit down with Lou for over an hour and reminisce on his time at St. Paul’s and hear fascinating stories about his life.

Lou grew up in Birmingham and graduated from John Carroll Catholic High School. He attended Spring Hill College, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. After graduation, he joined the Coast Guard and served until 1967, first on active duty and then as a reservist. Lou taught English at McGill Institute following his honorable discharge from the Coast Guard. He then decided to pursue a master’s in English from the University of Alabama. After graduation, Lou returned to Birmingham to teach English and championship debating at John Carroll. Four years later, he returned to the University of Alabama to get a master’s in Speech and Theater which he has used to direct plays at the University of South Alabama and in community theater. On completion, Lou returned to Mobile to become the head of the English Department at the newly merged McGill-Toolen High School. After getting the department on its feet, Lou moved to New York City where he taught English as a second language at St. Peters College. When he returned to Mobile, he was a part-time teacher at Williamson and at Spring Hill College where he taught English as a second language. In the spring of 1982, Anne Thurston called him to substitute for her while she chaperoned a class trip. Luckily for St. Paul’s, that opened the door for Lou, and he was hired to be the senior English teacher. Since joining the St. Paul’s family, Lou has taught senior and junior English, served as chair of the English Department, moderator of the newspaper, journalism instructor, moderator of the poetry magazine and moderator/sponsor of the writing center. When asked what his favorite memory is, Lou said it had to be either when Jeff Conrad ’88 and classmates threw him in the pool at Disney World on their senior class trip or reading poetry or Shakespeare aloud to his students, (which is my favorite memory of him).

When asked why he decided to teach and why he continues to teach, Lou says he loves watching students learn and grow into adulthood. He said it is the best feeling when you see the “lightbulb” go on in a student’s eyes. I hesitantly asked him if there were any plans to retire and, much to my relief, he said no. Lou said that every day that he is at St. Paul’s he still learns something new about his job and obligations. When asked what his favorite thing is about St. Paul’s, Lou says the comfort of knowing that the faculty at St. Paul’s are talented, dedicated teachers who truly care about their students’ success.

HIGH SCHOOL FALL SHOW NOVEMBER 7 - 11, 2018 2018 CAST

On a dark and stormy night, several strangers were assembled under pseudonyms at the behest of their blackmailer. The night quickly turned into a zany and comedic quest to solve a murder before all of the guests fall victim. Based on the cult classic movie (and the board game), Clue on Stage was a fast paced and wildly hilarious romp that had the audience laughing and trying to guess the murderer until the very end!

STEAM is rising in our third and fourth grade classes!

Our students are exploring with fun, innovative ways to learn. New STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) and CODE kits add to the excitement in our Innovation Labs. These powerful sets created by littleBits education are providing many opportunities for our students to create, code, and invent using collaborative skills to solve real-world problems.

The STEAM kit uses eight open ended invention challenges. Each system encourages students to tap into various strategic categories such as forces of motion and simple machines, engineering designs, environmental sensors that can create alarms, and development of futuristic car designs using motion and stability. The littleBits invention cycle includes the elements of create-play-remix-share so that each experience is unique. The CODE kit is a resource rich coding introduction that is easy to teach and engages students. This system uses the same invention cycle to guide students through making and playing games using their own custom codes.

“You can learn how to code and make new things, like light sensors, and sound triggers.” - Emily D. “It’s fun because it is technology that we can use to improve things in the real world. I have used pressure sensors to show how much pressure we put on the pad. This makes the lights increase or dim. This could be used for security programs in the real world.” - Bri W. Sixth graders learn about ocean currents to help make a cleaner world.

Sixth grade science teacher, Micki Brown, organized a visit to the Dauphin Island Sea Lab for the entire sixth grade class to explore ROVs (remotely operated vehicles) and drifters. The students had a chance to learn about ROVs and their purpose in exploring our oceans. They also had the opportunity to build their own ROV and drifters and actually operate them in a swimming pool. Drifters are designed to study the oceans’ currents to predict where pollutants will end up traveling in the ocean and to help with environmental clean- up. The majority of litter in our world ends up in our oceans; by studying the ocean currents we can better prepare ourselves to help clean up our environment.

Middle School students get involved!

Allie Fuquay organized a middle school club fair on August 22 where students could learn about each club and have opportunities to get involved. New clubs added this year were: Culinary Club, Green Saints Club, Kindness Club, Scholars Bowl for fifth and sixth graders, Science Olympiad, and Sports Talk Club. Returning clubs were: Archery Club, Art Club, Middle School Student Council, BEST Robotics, Rutledge Fellows of Philanthropy, and Tech Fair.

Adding to this wave of enthusiasm is the addition of two new club opportunities coming to St. Paul’s soon: Girls Who Code. Ginny Renfrow (second grade teacher) will lead our girls in grades 3-5 and Elizabeth Campbell (sixth grade teacher) and Liz Jackson (second grade teacher) will coach our girls in grades 6-12.

For years St. Paul’s has recognized the need for additional space for our students. A technology building was originally planned, but after input from parents, alumni, faculty and students, the need for a cafeteria and other space was recognized. Now, the Student Commons building is a reality. It is a place centered on students’ lives, from the beginning of a student’s time at St. Paul’s with the Admissions Office until the end with College Counseling.

This dream is the largest investment our family of Saints has ever committed. Now, after years of raising almost $8 million and months of construction and waiting, the time has come to open the doors to our students. Initial comments were delightful--“Wow! Can you believe the size of the cafeteria? I can see for miles out of these big windows!”

This is a milestone in our school’s history.

The building provides much needed space for creative thinking, learning and community engagement. Thank you for being a part of this significant project and the future of St. Paul’s.

This fall, the St. Paul’s Alumni Council had the opportunity to give $11,585 to a variety of St. Paul’s student groups. To be considered for funding, these student groups had to complete an application and give a brief presentation of their funding needs to the Alumni Distribution of Funds Committee.

Some of the groups receiving funding this year are: AP Photography Boys Golf Team Community Innovations Community Service Hunger Matters Program Girls Golf Team Robotics Club Game Club Strings Program Thespians Club PreK Playground Twelfth Grade Rutledge Fellows of Philanthropy The Alumni Council hosts fundraising events throughout the year in order to provide additional support for St. Paul’s programs. HARPER SINGLETON The University of Alabama Fellows Experience ALUMNUS SPOTLIGHT According to the University of Alabama website, “The University Fellows Experience is a community of elite scholars from diverse disciplines who share a similar passion to become change agents through commitment to leadership and service. Following the classical purpose of education, the production of good citizens, the University Fellows Experience strives to prepare the most able and dedicated students at The University of Alabama for remarkable lives of leadership in and service to their community, state, nation, and world.” The Fellows program accepts up to 30 students per year, and our alumnus, Harper Singleton ’17, is one of those exceptional students who was accepted into the Fellows Experience. In Harper’s year, only 24 were admitted into the program.

When asked why he applied for the Fellows Experience, Harper said his service learning experience at St. Paul’s made him want to continue serving communities, and he could not pass up this opportunity. He met the criteria for the program: “A student with an ACT score of 32 or an SAT score of 1450 and a high school GPA of 3.8 is eligible to apply, or a student with a 28 ACT/1320 SAT or higher and HS GPA of 3.5 or higher may be nominated for consideration by a high school representative or a UA faculty member if he/she does not meet the general requirements for UFE consideration.” The selection process is extensive. In the first round, Harper had to prepare paragraphs on three short answer questions and obtain a letter of recommendation. In the second round, he had to write a 2500-word essay on an experience that moved him, one that exemplified his passion for service learning. The third round was a phone interview, and the fourth round was a personal interview held in Tuscaloosa with a tour of the campus. The first year focus of the Fellows Experience is development with “seminars to explore issues of service leadership, personal development, project development and implementation, and civic engagement.” At the end of the first year, the class does The Black Belt Experience. Harper spent one month in Marion, Alabama working with the non-profit, Main Street Marion, focusing on economic development and rebuilding downtown Marion. Other classmates worked on cleaning up parks, medical outreach and painting a mural. Harper loved the people of Marion and enjoyed spending time with his fellow classmates solving real world problems. The Sophomore year of the Fellows Experience focus is on “seminars to explore issues of leadership in the community, including a series of exposures to the practical and multi-faceted aspects of being a good citizen.” The Junior year focus is “receiving individualized assistance and support for career options and post-undergraduate opportunities including active and ongoing research and correspondence with key figures in their field of interest, including pertinent professional conferences and peer mentors and committee chairs for UFE Committees in the planning and implementation of key events, programs and initiatives.” The Senior year focus is on culminating and giving back by “distinguishing themselves in their fields of study through published or presented articles, research, or related productive materials, reflecting their work in a four-year culminating portfolio and teaching a one-hour Honors College seminar course on a topic of their choosing.”

Harper’s major is microbiology with a minor in creative media production. After graduation, he hopes to attend medical school. His favorite thing about the Fellows program is the friendships he has made with his Fellow classmates. The group is diverse, and they help Harper keep his priorities and focus. He has enjoyed meeting people from all walks of life, and he is so happy to have had this engaging experience. When asked if he would recommend the Fellows Experience to other St. Paul’s students, Harper said, “without a doubt.”

TENNIS

The St. Paul’s Alumni and Parent Tennis Tournament was held on October 11, 2018 at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center.

It was another successful year for the tennis tournament. The beautiful weather allowed alumni, parents and friends to play tennis and help raise over $3,000. With the proceeds, the Alumni Council supported the girls and boys tennis teams, other student programs, and alumni activities.

The players enjoyed a warm-up clinic offered by Mary Angela Martin Griffith ’11, great door prizes donated by parents, alumni and local businesses, and lunch. Mulligans once again played a role in the fun and competitiveness of the tournament!

No more calling! While our alumni phone-a-thon, Dial-A-Palooza, has always been a big success, it was time to jump into the world of technology, start texting, and using Venmo. Both proved to be significant improvements for our volunteers and donors.

Volunteers from every decade and from all over the United States helped text their classmates to raise funds for St. Paul’s. We enjoyed the evening at Hancock Bank and appreciate those volunteers who helped. Several classes had their own text-a-paloozas at their homes and were able to reach many classmates. A special thanks to the students in the Mass Communications class taught

John Jeffries ’85, Heather Kraus ’89 and Earle Dawson ‘01 got the top award for catching the biggest gifts. During the night of Text-A-Palooza, the Class of 2001 raised the most money and had the most donors participating.

ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR Max Angerholzer, from the class of 1997, is Executive Vice President of the Institute of International Education (IIE). Headquartered in New York, IIE is the world’s premier non-profit global education organization with 18 offices and more than 700 employees worldwide.

Since its founding in 1919, IIE has sought to advance scholarship, build economies, promote greater cultural understanding, and protect scholars and students at risk. IIE partners with governments, multinational corporations, universities, and foundations to design and manage more than 200 educational and leadership programs – including the U.S. State Department’s Fulbright Scholarship and the U.S. Department of Defense’s Language Flagship – and serves as the leading source of research and analysis on international education trends.

Max previously served as President & CEO of the Center for the Study of the Presidency & Congress (CSPC) in Washington, D.C. A non-partisan policy organization established in 1965, CSPC applies lessons of leadership and history to current domestic and international challenges and promotes cooperation between The White House, Congress, and the private sector. He was also Managing Director of the Richard Lounsbery Foundation, a New York philanthropic institution that awards grants to support scientific and medical research, as well as science and technology policy, education, international relations, and security programs. Max serves on the Advisory Board of Radius Ventures, a New York venture capital firm that invests in expansion-stage health and life science companies. Previously, he was Special Assistant to the Vice Chairman of the Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, D.C., Advisor to the CSIS Abshire-Inamori Leadership Academy (AILA), and a U.S. Senate Doorkeeper. Max graduated St. Paul’s with honors and was inducted into the St. Paul’s Athletics Hall of Fame. He holds a Bachelor of Arts (magna cum laude) in Political Science from The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee and a Master of Arts in International Science & Technology Policy from The George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs. He is a member of the Economic Club of Washington, D.C. and currently serves on the boards of the Washington National Cathedral, the Salvation Army of the National Capital Area, the Lounsbery Foundation, and CSPC. Before joining the IIE staff in 2017, Max served on its Board of Trustees.

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS IN THE ARTS Walker Hayes, a graduate from the class of 1998, has built a successful career as a singer-songwriter and producer. Walker graduated Birmingham-Southern College with a degree in piano performance and has put his talents to work in Nashville’s world of country music.

Hayes’ single “90’s Country” made its debut on Good Morning America and references 22 90’s country songs. It was written by Hayes, Shane McAnally and LYRX, and co-produced by David Garcia, McAnally and Hayes. In December 2017, Hayes released his debut album Boom, which he co-produced with Grammy Award winning producer and songwriter, McAnally. The 10 track album includes the RIAA certified Platinum hit, “You Broke Up With Me” as well as fan favorites “Halloween” and “Beautiful”. Tracks from the album were nominated for Radio Disney Country Favorite Song (“You Broke Up With Me”), CMT Breakthrough Music Video of the Year (“You Broke Up With Me”) and AIMP Song of the Year (“Craig”). Hayes is currently on the road headlining club dates across the country. Earlier this year, he headlined his first ever tour, Good As Gold, and has previously toured with Kelsea Ballerini, Thomas Rhett, Dan + Shay, Old Dominion and more. Walker lives in Franklin, Tennessee with his wife, Laney ‘97, and their six children, Lela (12), Chapel (11), Baylor (9), Beckett (7), Loxley (5), and Everly (3).

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARDS Mae Cole Winters, from the class of 1988, has distinguished herself as an accomplished financial advisor and as a service-minded volunteer in her commitment to her alma mater. Upon receiving her Bachelor of Science in Commerce and Business Administration from The University of Alabama in 1992, she moved back to her hometown of Mobile and began her career as an accounting clerk with Roy Lewis Construction Corporation. Within two years, she was hired by a locally owned embedded software company, Accelerated Technology, Inc., as a Staff Accountant where she was ultimately promoted to Controller. ATI was acquired by Mentor Graphics in February of 2002 and Winters then served as Financial Analyst for the Embedded Systems Divisions. With over 20 years of experience in Accounting, Mae joined DocRx, Inc. as Controller in December 2013. Mae’s dedication to St. Paul’s shines in her steadfast work to organize parents and alumni to develop and sustain the activities, committees, and programs that unite the St. Paul’s family. Mae has served as room mother, grade level representative, and has been elected to chair several committees, including: Saint’s Night Out, Teacher Appreciation, Graduation Sensation, and Veterans Day Breakfast. Mae has also worked to direct Homecoming events and has led both Lower and Upper School Parent Council. Mae credits the people she volunteers alongside for creating a welcoming and supportive atmosphere between alumni and parents, and her dedication to the mission of St. Paul’s distinguishes her as not just a leader, but a community builder. Mae married her college sweetheart, Scott, in 1995 and they are the proud parents of two beautiful daughters, Margaret ‘18 and Elizabeth (10th Grade).

The Hearin-Chandler Foundation was created in 1963 by Ralph Chandler, then Publisher of The Mobile Press Register, as the donor and naming William J. Hearin, his successor as Publisher of the newspaper, as the sole Trustee. The foundation was fully funded at Mr. Chandler’s death in 1970 and began making grants in the community the following year. In 1995, Mr. Hearin contributed substantial financial assets of his own to the foundation and changed the name to The Hearin-Chandler Foundation. At his death in 2001, he left a major part of his estate to the foundation and named Luis M. Williams as his successor trustee. Mr. Williams served as sole trustee for six years and retired at the end of 2006. Thomas B. Van Antwerp became the trustee in January 2007 and presently continues in that role.

Over its 55 year history, The Hearin-Chandler Foundation has contributed over $33,000,000 in grants to many worthy causes, primarily in south Alabama. There is no restriction on the focus of its grants and monies have been given for health care, environmental conservation and protection, social services, the arts, education, museums and many other excellent programs and projects.

Lt. Col. J.D. Foy ‘97 moved to Japan and took command of an Air Force Squadron named 730th Air Mobility Squadron (AMS) at Yokota AB outside of Tokyo.

Emily Smith ‘11 was named to the University of South Alabama chapter of the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society.

Anna Braswell ‘14 was presented the Taylor Award at Ole Miss which is the highest academic honor awarded by the University of Mississippi. She has had a stellar academic and athletic career at Ole Miss as a senior distance runner for their cross-country and track teams. Anna holds a 3.94 GPA in geological engineering and has earned several academic accolades throughout her Ole Miss career including two USTFCCCA All-Academic honors in 2017 for both track and cross country, as well as a 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-District nod.

Lee Bonner ‘14 graduated Magna Cum Laude from The University of Alabama in May. She is working on Capitol Hill for the Committee on House Administration.

Shelley Spires ‘14, a senior at the Air Force Academy, just won her 2nd consecutive Mountain West Conference Championship in high jump in their conference indoor meet.

She will advance again to the NCAA National Indoor Championships in the next couple of weeks.
