FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear St. Paul’s Family, They say that timing is everything. If that’s true, then I am a very fortunate man indeed, as I somehow managed to time my arrival at St. Paul’s to occur during one of the most eventful and exciting times in its long and storied history.

This school year marks the 70th Anniversary of the founding of St. Paul’s, and the decades have seen St. Paul’s evolve in incredible ways. From its beginnings as a small church education ministry, St. Paul’s has grown to become one of the leading education institutions not only in Mobile, but throughout the region. Through the vision, guidance, and dedication of a host of trustees, leaders, and teachers, St. Paul’s has set itself apart by its innovative programs, its “whole child” approach to education, and its desire to serve students with a wide range of talents, interests, and abilities. St. Paul’s graduates now number in the thousands, and have gone on to make their mark on the world in countless ways.

While St. Paul’s will always seek to grow and evolve as a school of excellence, some things will never change here. St. Paul’s was founded as an Episcopal school, and remains proudly and firmly within the great Episcopal family. St. Paul’s will always hold as its first priority a commitment to the timeless values and bedrock principles of the Episcopal faith: That we are all children of God; that we are therefore each of inestimable worth; and that we are called to love, accept, and serve one another regardless of our differing faiths, backgrounds, or traditions. At St. Paul’s, our faith is a bridge – not a barrier – to connecting with our common humanity.

We will also always dedicate ourselves to excellence in all areas. Although perfection is not attainable, there is greatness in the striving, and our students will reap the rewards of our efforts both during their time at St. Paul’s and later in life through the modeling they have seen here.

I have said many times that the St. Paul’s of today has been made possible by the hard work and generosity of the generations of Saints who have come before us. Over the past 70 years, they have loved the school and given abundantly of their time, their talent, and their treasure to make St. Paul’s such a wonderful environment for children to learn, grow, and thrive. I would like to recognize all of today’s Saints who understand that we are beneficiaries of that legacy, and who have committed to paying it forward and keeping the virtuous chain intact. Their generosity of spirit helps ensure that St. Paul’s will be able to offer an equally vibrant and transformational educational experience to its students for the next 70 years and beyond. NATIONAL MERIT FINALIST What is something unique about yourself that others do not know about you?

Some people already know, but I had the incredible opportunity to spend four amazing months studying abroad in Israel. It was a truly life changing experience.

Any words of wisdom as a St. Paul’s senior?

Whenever you can, work ahead! Work can easily pile up and become overwhelming. It is best to stay ahead and remain focused so you can have time to participate in school events.

What is the best advice you have ever received?

Keep the big picture in mind. One little bad grade won’t kill you in the grand scheme of things.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of school?

My favorite thing to do outside of school is rock climbing. I climb at a wall in a gym and travel during breaks to climb outside.

What do you plan to study in college?

I plan to study biomedical technology and go into a field with nanotechnology.

Do you feel any one person, family or teacher, has been your inspiration for education?

My parents are definitely my inspiration for school.

They have worked extremely hard to get to where they are today and have been very successful.

What is something unique about yourself that others do not know about you?

I like to challenge myself when I need to do something important. For example, running cross country as a sophomore, I would start counting how many people I passed in the last half mile of races. I’ve found that challenging myself like this in athletics and academics helps me push beyond the point of exhaustion and to excel in the face of adversity.

What is something unique about yourself that others do not know about you?

I have a border line obsession with board and card games. Half of my Christmas presents were board games this year.

Any words of wisdom as a St. Paul’s senior?

Work hard, strive for what you desire, and you can achieve anything.

What is the best advice you have ever received?

The world is not fair. Whatever situation you are in, you can either accept this unfairness or you can work hard to change it for the better.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of school?

I am usually reading. I currently have two stacks of books on my desk, one I need to finish reading and one I want to start reading.

What do you plan to study in college?

I am still deciding, but I think I want to study how to become a chemical engineer.

Do you feel any one person, family or teacher, has been your inspiration for education?

My dad is my inspiration. He attended medical school when I was younger, and I have seen the work he has done and the rewards for his efforts. He has shown me that education is the most important thing you can have to advance yourself in life.

Any words of wisdom as a St. Paul’s senior?

Find a good support system of friends and adults and don’t be afraid to lean on them. High school is a tough time in life so it is good to have that support.

What is the best advice you have ever received?

Work ahead. It sounds cliche but deadlines really do sneak up on you. The last thing you need as a senior is more stress.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of school?

Go to soccer or basketball practice. It sounds lame, but without that structure I don’t know what to do with myself.

What do you plan to study in college?

I plan to study chemical engineering or maybe biomedical engineering.

Do you feel any one person, family or teacher, has been your inspiration for education?

My dad has been my inspiration for education throughout my high school career. He has always had high expectations for me and has pushed me to strive for the best.

HONORING LOCAL HEROES VETERANS DAY ASSEMBLY

On the beautiful clear morning of November 13, 2017, the entire student body enjoyed the annual Veterans Day ceremony. This important event highlighted many of our students while honoring the men and women who served and continue to serve our country. A parade of all students processed to the E. E. Delaney Stadium where they welcomed their veteran guests. Our St. Paul’s Boy Scouts, David Brown, Elliott Cherniak, Benjamin Estrada, Joseph Hantouche and William Spaht led the Presentation of Colors.

Junior Margaret Zheng, eighth grader Tristen Vice and second grader Millie Benton read their award winning essays on character traits that embody veterans. Our fine arts department honored our veterans with the band performing The Star- Spangled Banner, the Chamber Singers performing God Bless America, Marley Scarborough singing America the Beautiful and Jackson Bowers and Conner Wolf playing a memorable TAPS. The second grade class creatively “sang” You’re A Grand Old Flag in sign language.

St. Paul’s was honored to have Mr. Robert M. Butler, a Vietnam veteran, as the guest speaker. Mr. Butler reminded the audience of the honor to serve our country. We were also fortunate to have Mr. Brian Doyle close the ceremony with a beautiful version of Amazing Grace on his bagpipes.

St. Paul’s is proud to continue this tradition of honoring our veterans and active duty military members for their service to our country.

What is your fondest memory of being a Trail Maid so far?

K:

I wanted to represent the city of Mobile. I think we live in such a special city with such an interesting history, and I love that I get to be an ambassador for it!

It was special to me because at the time, our Country had been going through so much and it was nice to see Mobile come together as one to enjoy each other regardless of race, religion, or background.

Also, the Trail Maids got to participate in the “Love Train” dance and it was a lot of fun being able to see people’s reactions as we danced in our dresses.

I have always had a love for the City of Mobile and all that it has to offer. Also, since I was little girl I can remember seeing the Trail Maids at various events around Mobile and always saying I wanted to be just like them when I was older. The Trail is such an honored tradition in Mobile and I am so fortunate to be a part of it.

A Look at 70 Years of Excellence

Founded in 1947, as part of the educational mission of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, the school has grown from one preschool unit of 4 year olds to over 1200 students in PreK through twelfth grade.

A distinct St. Paul’s culture has developed during the past 70 years, one that values the principles embraced by our philosophy and mission statement. We believe that our culture should be imbued with Christian principles, and that integrity, character, honor, self discipline and spirituality are part of that culture. Furthermore, many traditions have been established as the school has grown and matured. Innumerable accomplishments of the school, its students, graduates, and faculty permeate our history and are a source of great pride. Now into the 21st century, our goal is to continue to strengthen the school’s role as a leader in education, not only in Mobile, but throughout the South.

In the spring of 1983, Vaughan and Victor Helmsing were living in Vermont and decided they wanted to move home to Mobile. Victor sent his resume to several schools in the Mobile area and interviewed at St. Paul’s, McGill, and the public school system. He was offered a position with all three, but luckily for us, he accepted a job at St. Paul’s teaching 9th grade geography. Vaughan finished up her masters at the beginning of August, they packed their belongings and moved to Mobile a day before faculty were to report to school.

They rented a tiny cottage behind the house that sits directly across from St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Victor began his first day of work ready to teach freshman geography. He had his first unit all written and he was ready for the students. His room was Karen Williams’ old room on the 3rd floor of the Mann building. Karen was there to greet him and began to show him her syllabus from senior economics and explain her lesson plans. Victor looked at her bewildered and explained that he was teaching freshman geography. He was then told by Karen that a change had been made and that he was to teach economics and government to seniors. Thankfully, he holds a degree in economics and was very qualified to teach the subject, but it did come as a surprise. Three days before students were to arrive, he had to scramble to get a syllabus and a lesson plan together. Victor received another surprise his first day of school when Jay Megginson, president of the class and Francy Madison, vice president of the class, appeared in his classroom and thanked him for being the senior sponsor along with Mr. Courie. His first class, Victor remembers the Class of 1984 fondly saying, “They were a fabulous class full of smart and engaging students.” Victor has taught both the parents from this class and many of their children. There are three married couples from the Class of 1984 who all sent their children to St. Paul’s: Ashley Graham Brown and Chris Brown, Allison Moran Castle and Wilson Castle, and Kim Crowe Padgett and David Padgett. Not only did they all have Victor, but most of their children have also had the opportunity to be taught by him. When asked to share a memory, a common theme arose: Victor makes economics fun and relatable and everyone said he was one of their favorite teachers. Chris Brown said, “Mr. Helmsing was one of my favorites! He made class so fun.

As his first class, we also had the stock project, but we had to track our stocks from the newspaper daily back then. I’m so thankful that both of my girls have had the opportunity of being in his class.”

Ashley Graham Brown said, “I do not remember a specific moment from Mr. Helmsing’s class except he ran into the wall every time he walked to the chalkboard, but his enthusiastic teaching style kept us

captivated and motivated. He genuinely cared about each student and wanted everyone to understand the subject and to do well in his class.” Their daughters, Madelyn and Mary Stirling had similar comments. Madelyn said, “My favorite memory of Mr. Helmsing is when he taught us the supply and demand dance that he made up!

He was so excited to teach us the best dance and made us dance as a class with him all the time. Even though it sounds silly, it actually helped everyone learn the relationship between supply and demand.

It was funny watching people do the dance during their tests to help them remember. I would see classmates use these dance moves all the time, for example at prom. He even started to bust a move on the dance floor at prom. He would also refer to himself as LL Cool Vic which always made everyone laugh.” Mary Stirling said, “My favorite thing about Mr. Helmsing is his school spirit because he supports all of the sports and makes us do cheers in class. He also always says that he will give us a detention if we are not being “peppy at the pep rally.” The Padgetts also had similar comments.

Kim and David said, “We love the fact that the students still have to do the stock project.” They also love sharing the common experience with their son, Tyler. Tyler’s memory, and one Victor also shared, is that he called Tyler “David” all the time because as he says, “they look exactly alike.” Allison and Wilson Castle also had very similar comments about Mr. Helmsing. Allison remembered, “I used to worry he would fall out of the third floor window because he would get so engrossed in his lectures, he would trip over the trash can and stumble into the window.” Jane Castle said her favorite memory is the day Mr. Helmsing called her Bailey, her brother who graduated in 2015. Bailey is a boy with curly hair and well, Jane is a girl. Of course, Mr. Helmsing immediately corrected himself saying, “I know you are Jane!” She is also impressed by his detailed memory of all his students, past and present.

Mr. Helmsing’s popularity for the past 35 years is not surprising.

What a gift St. Paul’s has been given to have him as a teacher for 35 years. If you talk to any alumni who still have children here at St. Paul’s, their comment about Victor is always the same - “he better not retire before my child becomes a senior.” How many people can say they had the same teacher as their parents? It is quite a testament to St. Paul’s that someone would want to work at the same place for 35 years and still manage to make a difference in each individual student’s lives. Thank you Victor! You truly know what matters.

Innovation starts with people.

Over the past few years, St. Paul’s has been working to integrate 21st century competencies in the classroom. These competencies include communication, collaboration, adaptability, innovation, and perseverance, all of which are highly sought after skills in today’s workforce. One of many such examples is the Community Innovations class offered by Kelli Etheredge. It is an elective for grades 7-12 and approaches collaborative learning in a new way. Working without a classroom, Mrs. Etheredge takes the course and its content “on the road.” Her goal is to create a learning environment without boundaries, allowing students to interact with the subject matter and it have meaningful application.

The task is simple-- be a change agent.

Teaming with the FUSE Project, Kelli created a work-share environment that allows students to team up with local non-profits based on their interest in the problems/needs posed by the organizations.

Focus areas include (1) providing diapers and wipes to families in need; (2) creating awareness about a community garden and healthy eating; (3) helping refugees with their transportation needs so they can attend English lessons; (4) creating an awareness about financial planning and budgeting; and (5) educating elementary aged students regarding future career opportunities. Students are challenged to work collaboratively, create innovative solutions, and communicate their findings. Throughout the course, students are graded on their ability to work effectively with the non-profit through the design and implementation of project goals. This is the first course of its kind and speaks to St. Paul’s determination to prepare our children for leading roles in the future.

As we celebrate the accomplishments of St. Paul’s during our 70th anniversary, take a moment to recognize the dedication to teaching that makes our school so unique. It is no secret that the faculty and staff at St. Paul’s are passionate about teaching, and persistent in its improvement. To discover new innovative teaching practices is not an easy task. It takes risk, perseverance, and at times, criticism. We are fortunate that they are a steadfast and dedicated group. Our city, our school, and our community are impacted by their leadership, and for that, we are thankful.

his fall, the St. Paul’s Alumni Council had the opportunity to give $11,000 to a variety of St. Paul’s student groups. To be considered for funding, these student groups had to complete an application and give a brief presentation of their fund needs to the Alumni Distribution of Funds Committee.

Some of the groups receiving funding this year are: AP Photography Boys Golf Team Community Innovations Community Service Hunger Matters Program Girls Golf Team Robotics Club St. Paul’s Mascot Strings Program Thespians Club Twelfth Grade Rutledge Fellows of Philanthropy The Alumni Council hosts fundraising events throughout the year in order to provide additional support for St. Paul’s programs. Some of these events include a golf tournament, tennis tournament, Mardi Gras Party, and more.

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS Jacob Edward Peavy is a 1999 graduate of St Paul’s who led the Saints to a state baseball championship under Coach Andy Robbins. Jake was named Alabama high school player of the year in 1999 and declined an offer to pitch for Auburn University in order to accept a major league baseball contract from the San Diego Padres. He played with the Padres farm teams, including the Mobile Bay Bears until 2002. He won the 2007 Cy Young Award after recording the Pitching Triple Crown that year. He has played for the Chicago White Sox and in 2013 for the Boston Red Sox where he helped win a World Series title. In 2014 he was traded to the San Francisco Giants where he also helped win a World Series title. He became the first starting pitcher in Major League history to win two consecutive World Series with two different teams in two different leagues. An avid Crimson Tide fan, Jake was a guest on ESPN’s College Game Day in 2013.

Jake is known for being a leader both on and off the field, and his spirit for giving back to others resulted in the 2012 creation of the Jake Peavy Foundation. Through his Foundation Jake hopes to positively impact lives and strengthen the local communities where he has had the privilege of playing baseball. His recent work, Focus Forward: A financial literacy program, was awarded the 2017 Education Innovation Award by NASDAQ. He has also been instrumental in the development of music venues in downtown Mobile, such as Ten Sixty Five. Jake’s love of music inspired him to learn to play the guitar and with his group, The Outsiders, to perform at benefit concerts. He also maintains a close partnership with the Boys and Girls Club and Create Change: A Mural Arts Program.

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNA IN THE ARTS Leigh Jordan Brown was a graduate of St. Paul’s class of 1978. After graduation, she attended Southern Methodist University where she graduated with a degree in political science and French. Leigh’s plan was to attend law school after college, until her senior year when she took a photography class and discovered her passion.

Leigh’s love for photography continued after graduation leading her to a job at PMT Publishing doing photography for Alabama Magazine and Business Alabama. After having children, Leigh decided to do freelance photography for a while before landing her dream job teaching photography at St. Paul’s. After teaching part time for a couple of years, Leigh began full time in 1998 and has loved every minute of it.

Along with Leigh’s love of photography, she chose to teach rather than further her freelance career for a reason; she enjoys instilling a purpose in her students to be creative in whatever career they choose for their future. She is proud of her students who follow their passion and love of photography. Leigh resides in Mobile with her husband, Paul, and they have two daughters, Caitlin and Jordan who are also St. Paul’s graduates.

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARDS After graduating from St. Paul’s in 2001, Lydia Knizley Johnson attended Auburn University where she obtained a bachelor’s in communication. Lydia is currently the Director of Christian Education at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. In 2012, Lydia helped create and implement the Raise the Roof Project with a colleague. Raise the Roof Project is a home repair ministry partnership of Dauphin Way United Methodist Church and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Mobile, Alabama. They connect people in need with groups willing to repair roofs and build relationships in the South Broad Street community of Mobile. Lydia has also been a Diocesan Commissioner for youth and young adults since 2015.

While serving the Mobile community, Lydia has also been an avid volunteer for St. Paul’s. As an alumna, she has been involved in many alumni activities as well as a volunteer coach for the Junior Varsity Track and Cross Country team and Girls on the Run. Most recently, Lydia helped establish a scholarship award at St. Paul’s in memory of her classmate, Josh Justice. Last spring, with the help of some classmates and the Justice family, the first Josh Justice Memorial Scholarship was awarded to a rising sophomore or junior who showed interest, promise and desire to explore in the performing arts. The student was also sought to embody characteristics that bring people together and bring out the best in others, much like Josh demonstrated during his lifetime.

For her commitment to her community, Lydia was a member of the 2012 Mobile Bay Monthly’s 40 under 40 class. She further serves our community through her involvement with Ransom Ministries, Salvation Army Mother Daughter Tea, and Sunset Rotary Club. Lydia and her husband, Wyatt, reside in Mobile with their son, Will, and their daughter, Lisee.

The E.E. Delaney Foundation, Inc., was established in 1982 in honor of E.E. “Bill” Delaney, the founder of Delaney Development, Inc. Its purpose is to give back to the Mobile community in the form of charitable contributions and services. The Foundation currently supports the American Cancer Society, Dauphin Way Methodist Church, the Infirmary Foundation, the Mitchell Cancer Institute, the Village of Spring Hill and St. Paul’s Episcopal School. Many of the partners of Delaney Development, Inc. continue to be an integral part at St. Paul’s. The Delaney/Frost families are alumni, current parents, grandparents, parents of alumni, Board of Trustee members and, of course, volunteers. The Foundation appreciates St. Paul’s for providing the basis for students to develop, learn, grow and ultimately better Mobile. The Foundation has supported St. Paul’s in athletics for decades with the E.E. Delaney Stadium, Press Box and Scoreboard and the Jim Tate Field House. Most recently the Foundation extended its support to the new Student Commons building with a generous gift. St. Paul’s is indebted to the Delaney Foundation and families for their continued support and service.

As we continue our excellence in this complete education, we have a fresh vision for our future: the Student Commons building. This state of the art facility will be the hub of our upper campus providing much needed space for creative thinking, learning and community engagement.

Over the past several years St. Paul’s has quietly raised over $6 million from foundations and individuals to build our Student Commons building. You have seen the construction and you know the need. To be move-in ready, the building will cost approximately $8 million. While we are close, we now move to finish the funding. Our hope is that every member of our community of Saints will own a part of this integral building.

To finish out a great Homecoming weekend, over 200 people participated in Running with the Saints on September 23, 2017. With the generosity of Pulmonary Associates as the title sponsor and all other sponsors and participants, the run generated over $13,000 in net revenue. Proceeds from the run will go towards the Chad Saucier Memorial Scholarship Fund at St. Paul’s.

The Chad Saucier Memorial Scholarship is presented each spring to a rising senior who models respect, integrity, responsibility, service, tolerance, and the highest moral standards. The recipient must exemplify and promote the alcohol and drug free policy of St. Paul’s School and must be considered a role model by his or her peers and the faculty and administration of the school. Last year, the school was fortunate to be able to award four rising seniors with this scholarship: Anna Ivey, Jody Parker, Ann Grace Singleton, and Addison Smith.

The Saucier Family is committed to growing this scholarship fund in order to continue to award more than one rising senior each year. The family has committed to matching the funds raised by Running with the Saints dollar for dollar.

Some say phone-a-thons are dead, but our alumni would have a different opinion! Forty alumni gathered on November 7th at Hancock Bank to call, text and Facebook message their classmates. Old friendships were renewed, yearbook pictures were used as blackmail and over $26,000 was raised for Saints’ Fund this year. Not a bad result for less than two hours of work.

Tommy Clement ‘97 gets the top award for securing the biggest gift. The Class of 1997 with Tommy, Marty Smisson and Bill Moore raised the most money of the night. Blair Gewin and Judson Crawley led the Class of 2002 with the most donor participation. For the third year in a row, Class of 2003 had the most classmates participating at Dial-A-Palooza with Emily Brutkiewicz Arendall, Kori Saucier Crawley, Paige Pearce Graf and Whitney Carrell McDonough. Additionally, Robbie Baker ‘83 and Hancock Bank were very gracious to volunteer the space for the evening. 2012 Murphy Mosley ‘12 married Tiffany East on January 20, 2018 at the Pensacola Naval Air Station chapel. The Mosleys will reside in Pensacola for a few months while Murphy finishes his jet training and then they will move on to Meridian, MS for further training.

In February 2015, Marshall J. Walton (‘08) was killed in a tragic accident while working in a highway work zone. To memorialize Marshall’s spirit, his family joined with the Alabama Associated General Contractors to fund the Marshall J. Walton Memorial Scholarship Endowment at The University of South Alabama. Its purpose is to provide a scholarship each year to a graduate of St. Paul’s who attends USA. St. Paul’s alumnus, Noah Michael (’16), was the first recipient of Marshall’s scholarship. Noah is on the baseball team at South Alabama and is doing well in his studies.

Full of life, an avid fisherman, with a warm heart and friendly spirit, Marshall did not know a stranger. Classmate William Morrissette remembers: “Marshall was an amazing person. He was a great friend, an unshakable competitor and just a naturally funny guy with an uplifting spirit that was infectious to the people around him. He was gifted in so many ways and he is always missed. I am grateful to his equally amazing parents for starting something so special to honor his memory. Hopefully one day the recipients of this gracious gift will move forward and live their lives to the fullest like Marshall always did.”

Marshall’s cousin, Rad Latham (‘07) similarly remembers: “Although our time together was cut short, the impact that Marshall made on my life is impossible to quantify. Only a year apart, I got to spend quite a lot of my youth with my little cousin. During those years together, I came to understand that Marshall was pretty special.

He was a caring and loving son and brother. He was an amazing competitor and supreme athlete. He was a loyal and devoted friend and never missed an opportunity to express his gratitude and admiration for those close to him. There are little things in this world that remind me of Marshall every day and assure me that he is watching over us each and every day. When I pick up a fishing rod, when I see a soccer field, when I hear a stranger’s laugh and feel their smile, I think about Marshall. At those times I am reminded to live every day like he did-full of life, energy, love and happiness. “ Marshall was the captain of the varsity soccer team his senior year and played soccer from 8th grade through 12th grade. He scored 62 goals while playing varsity soccer. He was 1st team All State and the Player of the Year for the Sunshine Rotary Club. Coach Chad Harrelson remembers: “Marshall’s impact on the resurgence of St. Paul’s soccer cannot be overstated. Even as a freshman in that first year he was one of my leading scorers, along with Sam Glusman ‘05. St. Paul’s had not beaten UMS-Wright in many years and our final regular season game was at UMS. No one gave us much of a chance to win. Late in the first half Marshall, who was blazing fast, blew by the UMS defense and scored a goal to break open a 0-0 tie. Sam Glusman added a second goal late in the game and the boys won a hard fought 2-0 shutout over our rivals. The energy and passion that Marshall played with was always a motivational factor for our teams. He scored 62 goals in his career at St. Paul’s but that one was by far the most important in my opinion. It established that St. Paul’s soccer was back and we were going to be a force to be reckoned with from that point on.”

Marshall’s impact was seen when many of his teammates and other soccer players returned to St. Paul’s in the spring of 2015 for an alumni soccer tournament in Marshall’s memory.

Additionally, Marshall’s parents, Kathy and Johnny, actively pursued the passage of a very important law. At the time of Marshall’s death, there was no law criminalizing vehicular homicide. The driver who caused Marshall’s death was never charged with even a speeding ticket because the Vehicular Homicide Law was repealed in 2014. With the help of many concerned legislators and friends, The Marshall James Walton Highway Safety Act was passed and signed by Governor Kay Ivey on July 26, 2017. The law makes vehicular homicide a Class C felony and ensures that careless use of a motor vehicle will have consequences. The Waltons hope all people will remember that sudden and unexpected death of a young person is a painful reminder of the extreme fragility of life.
