head of school

Dear St. Paul’s Community, It is an absolute delight to be part of the St. Paul’s Episcopal School family this year and to celebrate the accomplishments of our students in their various endeavors in this remarkable place.

I have had the opportunity to speak with young parents considering our PreK program and with high school seniors nervously pursuing their dreams in the college admission process with some of the finest institutions in the land. I have looked into the eyes of accomplished young musicians and athletes at the moments of highest triumph and in the moments of deepest disappointment. I have watched our students react to the realization that their labor restored a fire-damaged house allowing a displaced member of our community to return home. I have seen pure delight in the eyes of a grandfather watching his young granddaughter become a champion athlete. I saw the reaction of a young artist when informed that her work had received national recognition. I have seen the fixed gaze of an anxious mother silently singing the words of the song being performed by her fourth grade son in his first solo. I have seen our students pray and have known that I was in the presence of God. And, I have read with great admiration the comparative test scores of our students that

Our year together is now over the halfway point, and I am pleased to see improvements in a number of areas: two new buses added to the fleet; enhanced security on the campus; renovated areas in our buildings; successful accomplishment of our Saint’s Fund goal; fantastic progress in our capital campaign; growing excitement about a new building; and a packed Spring schedule.

I find a common theme through each season of the St. Paul’s school life: family. We are indeed a family of students, parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty, staff, trustees, and friends. That is the culture of this remarkable school.

NEW HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear St. Paul’s Community, The past several months have taken both St. Paul’s Episcopal School and me on an exciting journey. I am both honored and humbled to have been selected from among a strong and capable pool of candidates to head St. Paul’s in the upcoming years. My wife Jen is equally excited – she is also an experienced and highly talented independent school educator - and we have talked non-stop about St. Paul’s ever since we first stepped foot on campus and began to meet so many members of its wonderful community. The universal commitment to St. Paul’s, the justified pride in its storied history, and an equal desire to continue to grow and evolve as a school of excellence all shone clearly and brightly.

I knew almost immediately that St. Paul’s was different from so many other schools I have visited over my career. The warmth of welcome I received extended through every constituency of the school – its trustees, faculty and staff, parents, and (most importantly and tellingly) its students all went out of their way to make us feel welcome. Such gracious hospitality was a breath of fresh air, and we felt at home immediately. We were also struck by the large number of “boomerangers”; it seemed like half of the people we met and interacted with were St. Paul’s alumni, who returned there to teach, to serve, and to raise their children. We were equally gratified to see the close and effective partnership between the school and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. In sum, we found ourselves at a school which has developed leading edge programs while retaining deep seated values and unity of purpose. That is a rare thing. Clearly, Saints know what matters, and Jen and I are thrilled to have been invited into such a community.

I also quickly noticed the talent of the members of the St. Paul’s faculty and staff. They demonstrate a passion for children which mirrors my own, and it will be a pleasure to team with such educators on behalf of our students. My overriding goals as an educational leader are to develop in “my” faculty the attributes of autonomy, mastery, and purpose. I want to afford each teacher, administrator, or staff

member the freedom to do his or her work according to his or her own gifts and talents while supporting the further development of those gifts and talents towards mastery of his or her craft, and to lend his or her efforts to a compelling, school-wide vision and purpose.

If we can reach these goals, the effect on our students will be truly transformational.

Any organizational leader inherits the efforts of his or her predecessor. I count myself fortunate to succeed outstanding leaders.

Marty Lester’s influence can be felt throughout St. Paul’s, and I know that I will have large shoes to fill but also a tremendous foundation upon which we will continue to grow St. Paul’s. We are also deeply indebted to Dr. Mark Foley, who has provided strong leadership and stability in his role as interim head; indeed, he has not been content to operate in what is often a limited role, but instead has worked actively to advance St. Paul’s during his tenure. I know that you join me in appreciation of his outstanding service. Dr. Foley and I will partner closely in the coming months to plan a smooth leadership transition next summer.

I am also sensitive to the fact that leadership transitions also naturally create questions within a community. Members often worry about what “changes” the new leader will make. I want to take this early opportunity to assure you that my job is not to shape St. Paul’s to fit my vision. My job is to work with you through open dialogue and trusting partnership to help St Paul’s become the best version of itself possible. I urge you to feel comfortable reaching out to me as we build St. Paul’s future, and I look forward to beginning our relationship over the course of my transition visits in the coming months.

I wish you all the best for the remainder of the 2016-2017 school year. I look forward to meeting each of you and beginning our work together. When you see me, please make sure to say hello!

HONORING LOCAL HEROES 11TH OF NOVEMBER • VETERANS DAY ASSEMBLY

S

t. Paul’s Episcopal School takes pride in honoring our veterans and active duty military members who have risked their lives for our freedom. The school held its annual Veterans Day assembly on Tuesday, November 11. The morning began with a parade of students down the hill to E. E. Delaney Memorial Stadium. There, the students and faculty members were greeted by crowds of parents, grandparents, veterans and active duty military members.

The Veterans Day program began with a welcome from the Interim Head of School, Dr. Mark Foley, and a prayer led by our Coordinator of Spirituality, Zac Lambrecht. The colors were presented by the St. Paul’s Boy Scout Troops 3, 85 and 147, and the Chamber Choir exuberantly sang the National Anthem. Essays were read by grade level winners Ava Bindon (2nd grade), Benjamin Estrada (8th grade), and Morgan Harrington (11th grade).

Colonel (Retired) Robert M. Kirila was the guest speaker and was followed by the second grade’s sign language presentation of “You’re a Grand Old Flag.” To close the program, TAPS was played by St. Paul’s students Jackson Bowers and Tyler Kendall, and the assembly dismissed following the St. Paul’s Chamber Choir’s rendition of “God Bless America.”

MR. JACK TURNS 106!

M

ajor John Jacobson (known to many as “Mr. Jack”) turned 106 years “young” this past October. St. Paul’s Episcopal School threw Mr. Jack a surprise birthday party on campus. Major Jack Jacobson was General Patton’s Quartermaster during WWII. He served his country in many ways and continues to “serve” in the sunset years of his life. His ready answer to an invitation to be part of a ceremony is “I am available.” He believes he has been given “extra” years of life to serve others.

St. Paul’s is honored to have a special relationship with Mr. Jack and all of our Veterans.

No matter how dire and hopeless the situation may be, you should always persevere, and you will find light at the end of the tunnel.

It is okay to make mistakes as long as you learn from them.

It’s easier than Junior year.

What is the best advice you have ever received?

I was told not to leave the Boy Scouts, and now I’m an Eagle Scout.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of school?

I like to play games while blasting heavy metal. I also like to travel to other places outside of the Mobile area, particularly New York City.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of school?

I like to go on walks.

What do you plan to study in college?

I want to study applied mathematics in college.

I plan to study international cultures and languages with an application to business.

My inspiration was my math teacher in the 5th and 6th grade Coach Dan Gonzalez.

Camping, exploring the outdoors, and traveling are my favorite things to do.

The best advice I’ve received is to never be afraid of failure. I think that those words have truly had an impact on my life, and I live my life according to them.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of school?

I play viola and have been privileged to be a part of the Mobile Symphony Youth Orchestra for the past four years. Rehearsals, while intense, have always been a lot of fun, and I’ve met some really awesome people through it.

I was on the all-county swim and dive team in the 10th grade. I was the 5th best diver in the county… out of 5.

What is the best advice you have ever received?

My dad always told me that when it come to trying to plan your life, career, etc. you have to make your first priority doing whatever it is that makes you happy, and all the financial stuff will work itself out. Since I’m into art I’ve always considered myself lucky that my parents have that philosophy.

That said, check back in ten years and if I’m still living at home and drawing caricatures downtown on the weekends, retract everything I just said.

Any words of wisdom as a St. Paul’s senior?

Get involved with plenty of school organizations, but also leave plenty of time to be with the people you love (family, friends, etc.).

What do you plan to study in college?

I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of school?

I started playing guitar my freshman year and that’s been really fun. It helps me to cultivate my bohemian image...

A GREAT ROYAL VISIT

T

he Deputy Lieutenant of London, Lord Roger Bramble, traveled to Mobile, Alabama this past fall to deliver a very special invitation to some talented musicians at St. Paul’s Episcopal School. The Deputy Lieutenant, who was granted the high honor

by The Queen of England, Queen Elizabeth II, was on a special mission which will enable students from St. Paul’s Episcopal School to embark on a wonderful European adventure.

Deputy Lieutenant Bramble also personally delivered invitations from the Lord Mayor of London to the St. Paul’s choir and the St. Paul’s Wind Ensemble inviting them to make an appearance at London’s New Year’s Day Parade and Gala Choral Concerts in late December 2017 and early January 2018.

The Annual Halloween Parade was a huge success this year! Each student in PreK through 2nd grade made the trek to the “big campus” dressed in their Halloween costumes with their classmates. From witches and princesses to Star Wars and Ninja Turtles, each child had one thing in common: a bright, proud smile. This parade is a fun-filled event the children look forward to every year, and this year was no different. They waved to parents, siblings and grandparents on their way to the Upper School and then showed off their costumes to the 3rd through 12th graders. Additionally, a new tradition began this year. Our Admissions team invited prospective families to Saints’ Square to enjoy the parade. All students from the St. Paul’s Early Education Center (EEC) were invited and attended, too. The children decorated pumpkins, played games and enjoyed a few treats prior to watching the parade. These great traditions create wonderful memories and are enjoyed by all.

About Anna

Anna Collins, the daughter of Diana and Jerry Collins, is a green Azalea Trail Maid and student at Saint Paul’s Episcopal School.

Anna has been very involved at St. Paul’s, and her extracurricular activities include: Varsity Basketball, Girl’s Track Team, Varsity Volleyball, Varsity Softball, National Student Leadership Conference, Art Club, Interact Club, Yearbook staff, Breast Cancer Awareness Volunteer, Basketball Camp Student Coach, Manners Teacher, and Youth Leadership Campaigners.

Her honors and awards include: National Honor Society, 2016 Girl’s State Participant, Oakleigh Belle Leadership Program, Youth Leadership Mobile, Honor Roll, National Society of High School Scholars and Headmaster’s List.

Anna will be attending the University of Alabama where she will major in Pre-Pharmacy. After attending Alabama, she plans to apply with Samford McWhorter’s School of Pharmacy.

WRITER’S s t y l u s

riter’s Stylus is the program used to teach writing to our students in Kindergarten through 11th Grade. It began in 2010 in the lower school and has been growing ever since. A few years before implementing “Writer’s Stylus,” our teachers began using the instructional reading program “Foundations and Frameworks.”

Dr. Kevin Washburn is the co-creator of “Foundations and Frameworks,” and author of The Architecture of Learning, the book that explains the ideology and research upon which both “Foundations and Frameworks” and “Writer’s Stylus” are based. For “Foundations and Frameworks,” he studied brain activity and discovered that if students can learn thought processes that enable them to consider an author’s message, then they will be equipped to understand ideas not only within text in reading, but in other subjects: math, science, history, and more. “Foundations and Frameworks” cultivates reading comprehension, teaching thinking skills and using visual tools to organize and represent patterns of thinking: events sequencing, cause and effect, retelling, examining character, story structure, main idea and plot.

Dr. Washburn then created “Writer’s Stylus” based on research revealing that among many different activities (coloring, cooking, playing video games, working puzzles, etc.), writing caused more areas of the brain to be stimulated. Therefore, if students can write about what they are learning, then they will learn it better.

St. Paul’s uses both programs across curriculums in almost every grade. Each teacher has been trained by Dr. Washburn and our “writing expert” on campus, Mrs. Heather Robinson. She spearheaded the “Writer’s Stylus” initiative after seeing the amazing results from the “Foundations and Frameworks” program. Mrs. Robinson continues to add to the writing program each year. Last year, she visited Advanced Placement history classes to instruct students how to approach their essays for the Advanced Placement Exams. Next year, a new creative writing class will be offered to middle school students to help take their writing to the next level.

All of this activity falls under the “Writer’s Stylus” umbrella, engaging our students through active thinking and communication.

The following is an example of what “Writer’s Stylus” is teaching our students. This particular class was studying the genre of Short Story, in which they engaged in a retelling of a fairy tale. They were asked to apply this skill – retelling – by writing their own retelling of “The Princess and the Pea.” Can you believe this student was in the 1st grade?

One day Princess Ella was caught in a horrible storm. Water flowed throughout the heels of her shoes and out of the toes. As she ran through the rain she sees a golden castle. Blue lights flickered in the windows. Her gown was soaked in the rain and she was very cold. She imagined that on a nicer day there might be trumpeters at the big golden gate. She lifted the big knocker with a bang!

The very grumpy king answered the door. He was very grumpy indeed. He was so grumpy even his mustache was frowning. He said to Princess Ella, “Who are you and what do you want?” “I am Princess Ella. Would you be so kind as to let me stay here for the night?”

The king did not believe she was a princess, but he let her in. Then out of the dining room the queen emerged. “Who are you and who let you in here?” “I am Princess Ella,” she said. The queen said, “see about that princess” to herself as she walked away with a sly grin.

The queen sneaked into the guest bedroom and hid a pea under twenty mattresses and twenty featherbeds. Ella climbed to the top of all of the mattresses and featherbeds, and when she got to the top, she said “Whooo!” She rolled and she turned, but she could not get comfortable.

When Ella woke up, she was covered in bruises. When she climbed down the ladder, every step hurt.

When she got to the bottom of the bed, the king and queen were waiting for her. The queen asked, “How did you sleep?” Ella said, “I barely slept at all!”

The queen was so surprised, she fainted. Ella ran to help the queen but then she saw a young man.

The young man said, “Would you like a muffin?” Then Ella found out he was not a servant at all! He was a prince!

Then Ella said, “Yes, I would love a muffin.” But that was not all she loved.

When Ella was about to bite into the muffin, she saw a flickering light coming from the glass vase.

It was a marriage ring!

They were married the next day, and they lived happily ever after.

TRIP In January 2017 the St. Paul’s Episcopal School Chamber Strings had the honor of receiving an invitation from the Municipality of Cremona, Italy, to perform in the Auditorio Camera di Commerico as part of the cities “Masterclass Series” The school orchestra was featured in this prestigious concert series and they represented St. Paul’s, Alabama, and the United States as part of An American Celebration of Music in Italy. They also performed throughout Austria, in the cities of Salzburg and Innsbruck.

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) [Revised} HIGH SCHOOL FALL SHOW OCTOBER 26-30, 2016 2016 CAST “This was one of the most rewarding Fall Shows for me. I have always tried to do something that is challenging in order to teach the students different styles of performance. For this show, the comedy relied on improvisation. On top of that, the cast was expected to directly interact with audience members, sometimes becoming part of the audience or bringing audience members directly onstage.

No two performances were the same. What made this educational experience so exciting beyond the hilarious play itself was the collaborative nature of the design. It was not merely my production, but theirs as well because they contributed so many ideas to suit the scenes. I think that it will be difficult for us to ever top the comedy and cohesiveness of this production.”

ur performing arts department is renowned and has been for decades. Whether Spring Show, choral competitions, strings performances or the band entertaining us at football games, St. Paul’s truly embraces the fine arts. Behind every performance is our incredible faculty who give their time, talents and patience to all St. Paul’s students. Two special faculty members of this department happen to be married to each other! Missy and Jody Powell have been an incredible asset to St. Paul’s for decades: Jody has been teaching here for 31 years, while Missy has been his St. Paul’s colleague for 15 years.

Spring Show and all of the choral performances bring back many memories for those who participated and those who were in the audience. While the Powells will not acknowledge their favorite, there have been some funny memories such as the cat that was coaxed on stage during a Spring Show and the stink bomb during Silent Night at a Christmas choral concert. While the Powells know the pranksters, they will never tell!

This year, Spring Show was March 23-25 featuring a production of Beauty and the Beast. This was a wonderful family favorite that sure did please the audience!

All of our performances continue to be held in the Dr. Monte L. Moorer Theatre. While still an incredible building, it is beginning to show its age. One very accomplished alumus explains how his political aspirations started in high school at St. Paul’s Episcopal School.

Maxmillian Angerholzer III Class of 1996

Written by Lou Courie “Why would you choose me?” Max asked when I first contacted him. He was so typically unassuming, so genuinely modest that he couldn’t imagine why he would be spotlighted in this magazine. I had to reassure him that many here at St. Paul’s were aware of his considerable accomplishments, both past and present.

Max has always been this way, as far as I can tell, even though he was an honors student in high school (NHS, MuAlphaTheta) and in college at Sewanee (class of 2000, Magna Cum Laude), where he was a Political Science major. In fact, while at St. Paul’s, he often seemed unaware of his considerable potential. Victor Helmsing says he saw that potential early on and encouraged (forced? prodded?) Max into running for a leadership position.

As a result, Max became a remarkably effective Key Club president and a classroom leader. St. Paul’s is, apparently, also where Max got the “political bug.” At the Southern Republican Leadership Conference, held in Mobile (’96), Max met Senator Bob Dole, a well-known member of Congress and Presidential candidate. This meeting was one of those moments, he says, which furthered his interest in government. That was, it seems, one of the factors that led him to Washington, where he became an intern for Senator Jeff Sessions and a Senate Doorkeeper.

Apparently, this latter position is one that simultaneously provides orderly access to legislators and denies same to just anyone—vagabonds, gypsies, and interlopers in general. As I said to Max, it sounds as if you finally got to be a hall monitor.

My ignorance showed, I think. Who knew of the Doorkeeper’s importance?

Now, he is married (Lindsay), has a child (Cricket), and has gone on to get his M.A. from George Washington University’s Elliot School of International Affairs. Currently, he is President and CEO of the Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress (CSPC) in Washington, D.C. This organization, established at the behest of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, has the formidable task of promoting cooperation between the White House and Congress. It also supports executive branch transitions, providing advice and information based on lessons learned from prior transitions. I cannot imagine how complex and daunting a task that must be, but I can certainly see Max Angerholzer directing that effort.

Max is also Managing Director of the Lounsbery Foundation and on the Advisory Board for Washington’s National Cathedral.

The Foundation supports international programs in science and technology and assists nations by providing “seed money” for projects in geological research, medicine and various programs that often promote international cooperation. Due to its mission, Max has traveled all over the globe—Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Europe-- overseeing projects that help to establish international initiatives and create common goals beneficial to all. In addition to all of these commitments, Max is also on the Board of the Institute of International Education which administers the Fulbright Program, an institute which fosters mutual understanding between the United States and other countries primarily through exchange scholarships for meritorious students.

Max has always been as fair-minded as any student I’ve known.

Nowhere has that attribute been more in evidence than when the National Cathedral hosted the new President’s Inaugural Prayer Service on January 21st. Apparently there was some kerfuffle over whether or not it was fitting that the service be hosted there this year. Max and others on the Board thought it was simply the right thing to do. After all, this longstanding tradition goes all the way back to the FDR administration. Its purpose is to bring together people of different faiths. In the spirit of reconciliation, find common ground. That spirit, that attitude is the quality which typifies the Max I have known.

Always interested in history, government and politics, Max wrote in 1996, as a St. Paul’s Senior, a beautifully crafted research paper affirming the importance of the United Nations and suggesting that the UN would not meet its high expectations until this organization enacted some structural reforms. How prescient!

The issues raised in his research paper are issues still argued today. As then, Max still seems to recognize problems, but his career track and community involvements also indicate, at least from my perspective, that he believes we must find compromise and build “bridges” for the greater good of all. How sensible!

Max, we are proud of you. Keep up the good work.

ALUMNI COUNCIL Gives Back

T

his fall, the Alumni Council had the pleasure of giving $11,000 to a variety of St. Paul’s student groups.

To be considered, these groups had to complete an application and give a brief presentation to the Alumni Council Disbursement Committee.

Some of the groups receiving funding this year are: Community Service Hunger Matters program Thespians/Trumbauer AP Photography Softball Team Art Club Robotics Club After School Matters Program The Alumni Council hosts fundraising events throughout the year in order to provide additional support for St. Paul’s programs. Some of these events include the annual golf and tennis tournaments, Mardi Gras Party and more.

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI banquet DISTINGUISHED ALUMNA AWARD The recipient of the 2016 Distinguished Alumna Award was Susanne Smith McAvoy from the class of 1989. Susanne is the executive vice president of marketing, creative, and communications for Crown Media Family Networks, home of Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, which is owned and operated by Hallmark Cards, Inc. based in New York.

In 2016, Susanne was named one of Advertising Age’s Women to Watch as well as Marketer of the Year by Cablefax. In addition, she was included on the 2016 Cablefax 100 List as a part of “Crown’s Dream Team”.

Susanne was also honored by Multichannel News as a 2015 “Woman to Watch” and has been named as one of Cablefax’s “Most Powerful Women in Cable” for four consecutive years (2012-2015). In addition, she was designated to Multichannel News’ “40 Under 40” list in 2011.

Her many industry accolades include Promax|BDA Awards, CTAM Mark Awards, the Ad Council Silver Bell Award, a Cable Advertising Bureau Award, and two ACC (Association of Cable Communicators) Beacon Awards.

Currently, Susanne is serving her fourth year as director-at-large on the national board for Women in Cable Telecommunications (WICT).

Recently, Susanne was director-at-large for the New York WICT board and served eight years as a board member for the New York Chapter.

She joined the board as the membership chair and served a two-year term as chapter president, followed by a two-year stint as immediate past president. McAvoy is also an active member of Promax|BDA. Susanne resides with her husband and two children in Darien, Connecticut.

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNA IN THE ARTS The 2016 Distinguished Alumna in the Arts was Sarah Haas Otts from the class of 2003. Sarah Haas Otts is a profound local artist whose art is sold not only in galleries in the Mobile Bay area, but also in Atlanta, Dallas and New Orleans. For as long as Sarah can remember, becoming an artist has been her clear and main objective and the ideal career choice.

After graduating from college in 2007 with a BFA in painting, Sarah moved back to Mobile where she began to establish herself as a working artist. As an artist, she is motivated by the Abstract Expressionist movement. With highly energetic, impulsive brush strokes, she uses fluid lines to develop a foundation from which she builds her many layers. There are no preliminary sketches, just gestural, reactive markings. A finished painting is composed of layers of texture and color that have been repeatedly eliminated and rebuilt. By scraping and washing away areas of the painting, she is able to reveal portions of its original structure and various stages along the way. Each series she develops is a focused reaction to a personal emotion and experience. In recent years, the joys and challenges of being a mother have been a heavy influence on her art. Sarah resides in Mobile with her husband, Robert, and their two children, Lelia and Sonny.

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARDS This year, two Distinguished Service Awards were given. Erin Burns Schwant, from the class of 1998, was recognized for establishing the Early Education Center (EEC) at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, which opened its doors in 2013. The EEC was founded with the goal of providing children with a safe, loving and nurturing environment where they can grow spiritually, emotionally, physically and academically. As the EEC Director, this is exactly the type of environment Erin has created. In less than one year of operation, under Erin’s direction, the unique, cutting-edge learning environment was voted “Mobile’s Best Nursery School” and has since expanded to serve 90 families. Erin was a member of the 2014 Mobile Bay Monthly’s “40 under 40” for her commitment to the community and the EEC. She further serves our community through her involvement with Mirror Lake Racquet Club, Adoption Rocks and St. Paul’s Church. Erin has also served on the St. Paul’s Alumni Council. Erin and her husband, Troy, reside in Mobile with their four sons Jack, Charlie, Sam, and Robert and baby number five on the way.

The Distinguished Service Award was also presented to the Dr. Monte L. Moorer Foundation. The Dr. Monte L. Moorer Foundation’s mission is to provide funding to support the operations of innovative programs that improve the health and quality of life for children and citizens in the surrounding area. Throughout St. Paul’s history, the Dr. Monte L. Moorer Foundation has supported the school in various ways. By providing grants to assist in the construction of building projects and renovations, the Dr. Monte L. Moorer Foundation has assisted St. Paul’s in becoming the school it is today. Most recently, the Foundation provided a grant to fund the construction of the new Student Commons Building. The building will feature the new technology and innovations lab, a writing center, admissions office, guidance and counseling offices, community service space and the cafeteria. Not only does the Foundation have a profound impact in the St. Paul’s community, but it supports the greater Mobile area by providing assistance to hospitals, schools, universities, colleges and numerous community organizations, making our region stronger. We were delighted to have Mrs. Bradley Goodyear Smith represent the the Dr. Monte L. Moorer Foundation at the banquet and accept this award.

THE COMPREHENSIVE CAMPAIGN FOR ST. PAUL'S EPISCOPAL SCHOOL

A

n important component of St. Paul’s is our constant attention to mission, which includes the development of quality facilities. Many participated in the development of a 50-year Master Plan focusing on the school’s long-term needs.

The plan is divided into several phases to enhance and improve the entire main campus.

The focal point of phase one of the Master Plan is the new Student Commons Building pictured below. This beautiful space allows for a number of needs to be met and expands opportunities for enhancement throughout our school.

The building will contain a state of the art innovations lab and writing center where students will continue interactive learning. These skills will extend beyond our students, faculty, and staff as the center allows us to further share knowledge of innovative teaching and learning with educators throughout the region. The expanded cafeteria and new gathering spaces allow for large group gatherings and dining opportunities as well as opportunities for program expansion. As the hub of our student gathering space, the new building will also house our Admissions Office, Counseling Office and College Counseling Office ensuring services that meet our students’ needs.

The Something Different Something More comprehensive campaign began in 2015 to support this first phase. Board Chairman, Melissa Morrissette reports, “The campaign has moved forward in a marvelous way during the quiet phase. I am grateful for the tremendous effort being conducted by our campaign steering committee and Board of Trustees to make this building a reality.”

W

ith more than 280 participants this year, Running with the Saints, sponsored by The Orthopaedic Group, generated over $13,000 in net revenue. Proceeds from this two mile run benefit the Chad Saucier Memorial Scholarship Fund at St. Paul’s. The Chad Saucier Memorial Scholarship is presented each spring to a rising senior who models respect, integrity, responsibility, service, tolerance and the highest moral standards. The recipient must exemplify and promote the alcohol and drug free policy of St. Paul’s School and must be considered a role model by his or her peers and the faculty and administration of the school. The Saucier Family is committed to growing the scholarship fund

and matches the run proceeds dollar for dollar. With the match, $26,000 will go towards the Chad Saucier Memorial Scholarship Fund this year!

ur alumni really knocked it out of the park this year at the St. Paul’s alumni phone-athon. During the two hours of calling, 46 alumni were able to reach 309 classmates and raise over $27,000! It was a fun night filled with laughter and reminiscing. The Class of 2003 with Emily Brutkiewicz Arendall, Kori Saucier Crawley, Paige Pearce Graf and Whitney Carrell McDonough rocked with the most classmates participating during the phone-a-thon and the most amount raised during the event. Jeff Conrad ’88, Jodi Miller Ivey ’90, Emily Brutkiewicz Arendall ’03 and Joe Gilmore ’09 tied for the largest gift of $1,000 from classmates.

Once again, Robbie Baker ’83 and Hancock Bank were very gracious to volunteer their space. Ashley Hudson ‘08 is in her fourth year at UAB School of Medicine. She was recently awarded a Chi Omega Foundation Alumnae Educational Grant on the basis of need, merit, and individual goals.

Ashley was also awarded a Valley Foundation Senior Scholarship based on the qualities of a physician espoused by Dr. Will Deal: professionalism, caring, enthusiasm, and contribution to teams.

Laura Erickson ‘12 graduated from Auburn, Summa Cum Laude, with a double major in Political Science and Sociology with a minor in Spanish. She is currently attending George Washington University in Washington D.C. where she is working on her Masters in Public Policy.

Dr. Philip Chang ‘10 has joined the medical staff of the Shriners Hospitals for Children-Cincinnati and the University of Cincinnati Department of Surgery in the Division of Plastics and Burn Surgery.

He will be serving as a burn surgeon, caring for burned children at Shriners and adult patients at the University. He has been appointed assistant professor of surgery at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

Emily Messer ‘12 has graduated from the University of South Alabama. She was a three-time all-tournament softball team pick and was named all-south region by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. She was drafted 31st overall by the Akron Racers pro softball team from Akron, Ohio.

Katie Volkman ‘12 was accepted into Belmont University’s doctorate program in Occupational Therapy.

Cam Williamson ‘12 graduated from Emory University and is attending New York University School of Law. 2013 Taylor Roe ‘13 was accepted into the Auburn University Harrison School of Pharmacy.

2014 Shelley Spires ‘14 set another record just one week after she became the first Air Force Academy female in program history to break the six-foot bar in the high jump. Shelley posted a career-best clearance of 6’1½” to win the high jump at the Air Force Invitational, Spires broke the Mountain West’s six-year-old record by a quarter-of-an-inch. Spires, who won the seeded section of the high jump by over an inch and helped Air Force Academy to the team title, is ranked third in the NCAA this season.
