FROM THE HEADMASTER St. Paul’s is remarkable. It challenges, sustains and nurtures students. It helps them grow to be productive and successful young men and women who are making a difference in the world.

When I contemplate leaving, I cannot help but think of what this school has meant to my family. My children are who they are because of the influences they have had here, and they are better for it. To name all who influenced them would make too long a list, but know how grateful I am to each of you. Thank you.

Dear St. Paul’s Family,

It has been another remarkable year in the life of our school, filled with accomplishment, growth and new relationships. It is my last at St. Paul’s Episcopal School, and as you will see in this edition of the Epistle II, one of the most memorable.

The move to a new school and a new city brings with it excitement and anticipation, but it has also given me an opportunity to reflect on my experience here over the last twenty years. The relationships I have formed — with colleagues, families and, of course, students — are what I will cherish the most. They are what I will miss the most.

Walking the hallways of our school, attending the various functions, chapels, and assemblies, listening in on the innovative and challenging teaching going on every day in every classroom, attending sporting events, concerts, and performances, — all are things I get to do every day, and I love it. The rhythm of any school is unique. The rhythm here is beautiful.

The four pillars of a St. Paul’s education are exemplified by the faculty and staff of the school. The pillars are crucial to educating the whole child, and our faculty take full advantage of every opportunity – in academics, spirituality, the arts and in athletics. They are a source of pride and joy for me, and I will miss being a part of them.

Moments can help describe a place, but they can’t really define it. We learned that several years ago, when we were asked by a consulting firm to describe who we are. It was a great exercise, which led to much reflection on who we are as a school, what our vision is, and how we measure success. In the end St. Paul’s is a place of intense emotion, feeling and passion for and about students and how they learn. It is a place that feels different because it is different.

It is a place that matters – to those who study here and to those who work here.

It is a place to be proud of, and I am.

To be the Headmaster of St. Paul’s is one of the greatest honors of my professional career. To have been given the opportunity over eight years ago to do so by our Board of Trustees was an

opportunity that few people receive, and I hope that their trust has been rewarded. I am very thankful for their leadership and support.

Thank you for allowing me the privilege of having been a part of your children’s education. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this beautiful place. I am grateful beyond words.

DR. MARK FOLEY NEW INTERIM HEAD OF SCHOOL

O

n April 20 2016, St. Paul’s Episcopal School was pleased to announce that Dr. Mark Foley has accepted the invitation of the Board of Trustees and the Head of School Search Committee to succeed Marty Lester as Interim Head of School for the 2016-2017 school

year.

Dr. Mark Foley has served as president of the University of Mobile since 1998 and has led the move to intentionally integrate learning, faith and leadership in all areas of university life, while raising academic standards, building new residence halls, establishing outstanding programs, such as the Center for Performing Arts, and leading the university to national rankings.

He has served in leadership at national and regional levels in a variety of educational and charitable organizations, including the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the Alabama Association of Independent Colleges and Schools, the Council of Presidents of the Southern States Athletic Conference and the Board of Directors of Volunteers of America, Southeast, Inc. Previously, Dr. Foley was Executive Vice President

of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas and a Master of Divinity and a Doctor of Philosophy in psychology and counseling from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He is an ordained minister, a former business owner, and has practiced as a professional counselor. His wife, Marilyn, is involved in many university activities. She holds a Bachelor of Science in education from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas, and is a former classroom educator. The Foleys have two children and four grandchildren.

St. Paul’s believes that Dr. Foley will provide the leadership and experience needed to continually improve the educational experience of St. Paul’s Episcopal School. St. Paul’s is fortunate to have the leadership of an Interim Head of School with Dr. Foley’s vast experience.

ST. PAUL’S National Merit Finalists

T

hree students at St. Paul’s Episcopal School have been recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation as National Merit Finalists.

Seniors Viktoria Boening, Luke Lamonte and Elizabeth Morrissette will now be considered for National Merit Scholarships.

These accomplished students were named National Merit Semifinalists in September 2015 and are among 15,000 students who still remain in the running for 7,400 scholarship offerings. To become a Finalist, the Semifinalist and his or her high school must submit a detailed scholarship application, in which they provide information about the Semifinalist’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment and honors and awards. A Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record

throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay and earn SAT® scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test.

Approximately 1.5 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2014 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The finalists who are in the top one percent of those competing students, will be informed of their scholarship offers beginning in March.

he St. Paul’s Players presented Shrek the Musical for their spring show in the Dr. Monte L. Moorer Theatre.

Directed and produced by Jody Powell, Tiny McPhillips, and Catherine Inge Shrek the Musical brought all the much-loved DreamWorks characters to life, live on stage, in an all-singing, all-dancing extravaganza. Shrek The Musical featured 48 St. Paul’s students in the cast and four students on the stage crew.

“There are no words that can adequately describe what working on this show with these wonderful young students has meant to me. I feel they have shown maturity well beyond their years through their sense of responsibility and commitment to us, and more importantly, to each other,” said Jody Powell, Music Director and Theatre Coordinator.

Grandparents Day KINDERGARTEN & SENIOR CLASSES

St. Paul’s grandparents are an important part of our family of Saints. Each spring, our kindergarteners and seniors honor their grandparents.

Our kindergarten students invited their grandparents to a patriotic performance in the Church and a lively reception afterwards in the Parish Hall. The seniors (Class of 2016) hosted a reception in Saints’ Square and attended chapel with their grandparents. Each event was a fun way to show our grandparents a glimpse of life at St. Paul’s as well as a special way to thank each grandparent for their love and support from kindergarten through senior year. We love our Grandparents!

A ST. PAUL’S FAMILY STORY

A

t St. Paul’s, we are a family. Not only do we value each family that attends St. Paul’s, but we treat each other as family. This love and support can be seen and felt all around our campus. Our family of Saints is made up of a variety of people, including students representing seven international countries: China, Germany, France, Canada, India, Venezuela, and Bangladesh. Each international family influences our school community and helps us grow as individuals. One story in particular is that of Mrs. Betty Stone and Margaret Zheng.

Margaret came to St. Paul’s from China in the fall of 2015. She was in eighth grade, and Mrs. Stone, Dean of Grades 6-8, bonded with Margaret and her mom, Pamela, as she helped them transition to St. Paul’s and life in Mobile. A very bright young lady, whose respectful nature, quiet determination and love of learning is infectious, Margaret says she felt comfortable at St. Paul’s right away. Her parents were also very pleased with our school.

As Margaret and her mom prepared to return to Mobile from China last August, Pamela experienced some difficulty with her visa, and she was not able to stay in Mobile for the entire school year.

When Mrs. Stone heard the news, she could not bear the thought of Margaret leaving St. Paul’s, so she and her husband, John, graciously welcomed Margaret into their home for the year.

This year, Margaret has become an even more integral part of the St. Paul’s family as well as part of the Stone’s family. She has successfully participated in many aspects of St. Paul’s life such as Chamber Strings, Homecoming Court, Spring Show, and Math Team, all while maintaining Headmaster’s List status academically. She loves St. Paul’s and thrives on “everyone’s friendliness” here. Out of all her activities, she is most proud of being in the Spring Show, Shrek. She said, “Though my role as ‘happy person’ was rather minor to the show, I was so happy to even be in the show.” It was her first theater experience, and she says, she “learned so much- how to work with

a large group of people and how to manage her time better.” The show’s dress rehearsal day happened to fall on Margaret’s birthday, March 14, and she says, “This may have been the best birthday I have had so far!” Her birthday cake even had a Shrek theme.

Academically, Margaret’s “strongest passion” is math. As the youngest of the five-member Math Team, she helped St. Paul’s win the AISA District and State High School Mathematics Competitions.

She says she met with Mrs. Collins before and after school a few times to learn about some topics that she had not yet been taught.

She also recently received the Mu Alpha Theta Award as well as the Honors Algebra II Award.

Being at home with Dr. and Mrs. Stone has allowed Margaret to experience a much more typical American lifestyle. She has truly become part of their family. She says her most memorable experience was spending Christmas with the Stones. She loved picking out her first Christmas tree and the whole “decorating process,” even laughing about how it took Dr. Stone and her hours to put the lights on the tree. When the Stones’ family came into town for the holiday, Margaret and Dr. Stone led Christmas carols with Margaret playing the keyboard and Dr. Stone the clarinet. Margaret has also loved getting to know the Stones’ granddaughter Leah. At Leah’s Grandpersons’ Day at Holy Innocent’s Episcopal School in Atlanta, Leah asked that Margaret be included in the family photo.

Margaret says that “living with the Stones gives me a real taste of an American family.” She and the Stones have an open, honest, candid relationship, teaching each other things they would have never imagined. Margaret says she has really grown as a person at St. Paul’s too, truly “blossoming” over the past couple of years.

Margaret has become interwoven into the Stones’ life as well as the St. Paul’s family, and we are grateful to have her here.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

ST. PAUL’S EPISCOPAL SCHOOL

VETERANS DAY 11TH OF NOVEMBER • ASSEMBLY HONORING ALL WHO SERVED

S

t. Paul’s Episcopal School takes pride in honoring our veterans and active duty military members who have risked their lives for our freedom. The school held its Annual Veterans Day assembly on Tuesday, November 11.

The morning began with a parade of students down the hill to E. E. Delaney Memorial Stadium. There, the students and faculty members were greeted by crowds of parents, grandparents, veterans and active duty military members.

The Veterans Day program began with a welcome from Assistant Headmaster, Dr. Scott McDonald and a prayer led by our Coordinator of Spirituality, Zac

Lambrecht. The colors were presented by the St. Paul’s Boy Scout Troops 3 and 85 and the Chamber Choir exuberantly sang the National Anthem. Essays were read by grade level winners Ivey Marston (2nd grade), Elliott Morgan (6th grade), and Divya Goel (11th grade).

Captain Christopher Turner was the guest speaker followed by the second grade’s sign language presentation of “You’re a Grand Old Flag.” To close the program, TAPS was played by St. Paul’s students Jackson Bowers and Justin Way, and the assembly dismissed following the St. Paul’s Chamber Choir’s rendition of “God Bless America.”

Football Wins 5A State Championship

FOOTBALL

St. Paul’s is twice as nice – thanks to its second state title in as many seasons. The St. Paul’s varsity football team won the 2015 5A state championship on Thursday, December 3, 2015, at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, AL. The 41-26 win over Mortimer Jordan concluded the Saints’ season with a record of 13-2. This state title is St. Paul’s third football state championship. Head Coach Steve Mask said, “To win one in 2007 at Legion Field and last year in Auburn, and this one in Bryant-Denny, it’s pretty special.”

Swimming Wins 5A State Championships

SWIMMING

St. Paul’s Episcopal School captured the Boys’ and Girls’ second straight Class 1A-5A state swimming titles at the AHSAA 56th Swimming & Diving Championships. The meet, held at Auburn University’s James E. Martin Aquatics Center, included some of the fastest swimming in state history. The 480 athletes from over 60 high schools across the state competed against one another in 22 different events. New state records were set in six girls’ events and All-American times were accomplished in 26 different swims.

St. Paul’s swimmers achieved five new school records on their way to winning the state titles. This was the second time for the boys to win a championship and the fourth straight title for the Lady Saints.

Outdoor Track Wins 5A State Championships

St. Paul’s repeated as 5A state champions with a hard-earned 3-point victory margin over 36 scoring schools for our 17th overall boys state team championship and 8th in the past 11 years. It took a total team effort to capture this championship highlighted by outstanding individual performances from seniors Brett Erickson, Miller Mosley and Bryce Huff and supported by sophomores Jalyn Armour-Davis and Zackery Carmichael, who was our lone individual state champion in the 110M high hurdles for the second consecutive year. St. Paul’s prevailed with a 123-90 victory over defending 5A champion Beauregard, with the 3rd place teams tied at 51 points in the 33-school scoring competition. Individual honors were highlighted by senior Charlotte Krause’s state titles in the high jump and triple jump along with her second place finish in the 100M high hurdles. Eighth grade distance sensation, Isabel Valenzuela, won the 800M, 1600M and 3200M races and anchored our girls 4X800M team to a come from behind win in that event. Sophomore pole vaulter, Callie Radcliff, continued her domination with her third consecutive state championship to complete our state event winners. Charlotte Krause concluded an outstanding 5-year high school career by capturing her 10th career individual state championship and 22nd career all-state event finish.

Boys Golf Wins 5A State Championship

BOYS GOLF

The Boys Varsity Golf Team claimed the 2016 5A State Golf Championship. The tournament was held at the Robert Trent Jones Hampton Cove Rivers Course near Huntsville, Alabama.

St.Paul’s scored a 583 to defeat Russellville (604) by 21 strokes.

The Saints were led by seniors Noble Smith and William Haas as they shot 3 over par. Sophomore Kyle Cornelius also shot a 3 over par, including an AHSAA State tournament record of 63 in the second and final round. Sophomore, Will McFadden shot 72 in the first round and freshman, Matthew Hunt added a 75 in the first round. This was Head Coach Sandy Santoli’s 13th season with 10 state titles.

Girls Indoor Track Wins 5A State Championship

INDOOR TRACK

St. Paul’s girls won their 7th consecutive, and 22nd all-time, state indoor track championship with a strong and balanced team performance resulting in a final 108-61 victory margin over runner-up UMS-Wright in a 24-school combined 4A-5A scoring division. Leading our girl’s efforts was senior hurdler/jumper Charlotte Krause, who scored 40 points in winning four individual state championships in the 60M hurdles, long jump, triple jump and high jump. Eighth grade distance runner, Isabel Valenzuela, finished second in both the 1600M and 3200M runs and anchored our third place 4X800M relay team earning 21 ½ individual points in the process. Sophomore vaulter, Callie Radcliff, won the pole vault competition as well as running legs on both of our scoring 4X200M and 4X400M relay teams. Nine varsity letter-winners who scored in the state meet should return for next year!

unning with the Saints 2015 was a huge success. With more than 230 participants, we raised over $16,000. The run promotes a drug and alcohol-free healthy lifestyle and benefits the Chad Saucier Memorial Scholarship Fund. This scholarship is presented each spring to a rising senior who models respect, integrity, responsibility, service, tolerance and the highest moral standards. The recipient must exemplify and promote the alcohol-free and drug-free policies of St. Paul’s Episcopal School and must be considered a role model by his or her peers and the faculty and administration of the school. The Saucier Family is committed to growing the scholarship fund and matches the run’s proceeds dollar for dollar.

T

he recipient of the 2015 Distinguished Alumnus Award was Dr. Colby Jubenville. Colby, a member of the class of 1990, was recognized for his career achievements and community contributions. Colby B. Jubenville, Ph.D. is an accomplished author, speaker, professor, entrepreneur and inventor. He holds an academic appointment at Middle Tennessee State University as Special Assistant to the Dean for Student Success and Strategic Partnerships in the College of Behavioral and Health Sciences and is Principal of Red Herring Innovation and Design, an agency specializing in helping people and organizations become better known and better understood for their unique value.

He regularly speaks on his book Zebras & Cheetahs: Look Different and Stay Agile to Survive the Business Jungle which teaches others how to compete on unique value vs. commodity. In addition, Jubenville has published over 35 peer-reviewed trade articles and is the founder of The Journal of Applied Sport Management. Colby lives in Murfreesboro, TN with his wife Katie and two children, Jack and Mary Burke.

The 2015 Distinguished Alumnus in the Arts was Michael Knight from the Class of 1988. Michael is the author of two novels, Divining Rod and The Typist, two collections of short stories, Dogfight and Other Stories and Goodnight, Nobody, and a book of novellas, The Holiday Season.

His most recent novel, The Typist, was selected as a Best Book of the Year for 2010 by The Huffington Post and The Kansas City Star, among others. He is the recipient of a Special Citation from the PEN/Hemingway Foundation (1999) and the Robert Penn Warren Award for fiction (2013). Michael teaches creative writing at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, TN where he lives with his wife Jill and two children, Mary and Helen.

This year, two alumni were the recipients of the Distinguished Service Award. Ashley Graham Brown, from the Class of 1984, was recognized for her service to St. Paul’s and her community. As a volunteer, Ashley has

worn many hats. She is actively involved in the community and has served on the Providence Hospital Foundation’s Festival of Flowers Committee and served as Chair for two years. She was the Junior League of Mobile’s Christmas Jubilee Chair, the American Heart Association’s Heart Gala Chair, Mobile Ballet’s Nutcracker Ball’s Silent Auction Co-chair, and the Hurricane Katrina Relief Housing Chair at her church. She is actively involved at St. Paul’s. Ashley has served as a grade level representative for many years, an Academic Boosters’ volunteer, a Teacher Appreciation volunteer, the Saints’ Night Out Silent Auction Co-chair for four years and the Middle School/Upper School Parent Council Chair. She is on the Used Uniform Committee and is serving as the Campus Store Volunteer Chair this year. Ashley is married to Dr. Chris Brown, also a graduate of the Class of 1984. She has two children at St. Paul’s, Madelyn ’17 and Mary Stirling ‘18.

The Distinguished Service Award was also presented to Dr. Grant Zarzour from the Class of 2002. Grant is currently Chief Resident at the University of South Alabama Medical School in Orthopaedics with an expected graduation date in June 2016. Grant was the Corporate Relations Chairman for Hearts Everywhere Reaching Out (H.E.R.O.) for Children from 2003-2006. He helped raise over $300,000 while focusing on quality of life improvement for the over 9,000 children affected by HIV/ AIDS. From 2008 to 2009 Grant was the chairman of the “Gumbo Chili Showdown” for the Regan Robinson Young Scholarship Fundraiser. In 2011, he was an ambassador for the Addo Institute where he planned and strategized to create trips to Cuba for cultural understanding and service.

Currently, Grant is the marketing director for the GO Kickball South Alabama which engages over 2,700 young professionals a year through athletic activities. He is the organizer of an exploratory committee for the Mobile Chamber of Commerce Innovation PortAL. The group aims to create a downtown incubator space to attract new business growth. He is also Co-founder and Chair of the Executive Board of the Fuse Project, a non-profit based in South Alabama that significantly benefits specific children’s projects. Grant lives in Mobile with his wife Brie and son Wyatt.

One very talented alumna expresses how she found St. Paul’s liberating and open to differences.

Katie Pastore Class of 2000

Written by Lou Courie Never turn your nose up at an intern opportunity! One never knows where such work can lead. That’s what Katie Pastore (Class of 2000) didn’t do, and look where it’s landed her. I interviewed Katie on a stunningly beautiful April afternoon, at one of my favorite places, “Kitchen on George.” I discovered how and why she began working, first as an intern with Paramount Pictures and “The Daily Show” with Jon Stewart and later paid work in film and television: The Bourne Ultimatum (Matt Damon, who, Katie says, is a really nice guy) Forrest Gump, The Devil Wears Prada (Meryl Streep), The Hours (Streep again, with Julianne Moore, Nicole Kidman and others). She’s also worked with countless other actors, directors, and production teams and, in Chicago, was executive producer of the morning drive show on WGN Radio and produced a weekly news and entertainment show for NBC5 television.

Over wine and a couple of small plates, Katie and I caught up on her career since St. Paul’s. Following graduation, Katie matriculated at SUNY Purchase (State University of New York at Purchase, NY) and graduated from there in 2004. Immediately she moved into the City where she found a “tiny box” in Manhattan to live in and got an intern job with Scott Rudin Productions. To this day, she wonders how she got it.

Although fond of the city, Katie was excited about the prospects of working in entertainment; so, she moved to LA where many jobs were to be found. She got a “real life” job (a salary!) with Wendy Finerman Productions. A Mobile girl who knew Winston Groom made her a natural to work as second assistant on the production team responsible for Forrest Gump. By Winter of 2004, only a few years removed from St. Paul’s, Katie was on her way to steady work in film, creating, editing and doing the “behind the scenes” work that actually makes film magic.

I couldn’t abandon our time together without asking Katie what made her want to do this line of work. At St. Paul’s I only knew her as the amusing girl who wrote for The Epistle. I didn’t even know she had transferred into St. Paul’s. She found our school liberating, she says, open to differences. I didn’t even realize she had done backstage work on “Big Show.” Why she chose

On set with actress Michelle Williams her profession was simple: She just knew from an early age, having seen Elaine May, the brilliant comic, and others work in television, that “show business” was for her. She wanted to see how the magic was created.

Now she knows. Now she does it—radio, television and primarily film work are her passion. She’s also writing and adapting. Two projects in development that she is excited about are producing a Casey Affleck penned-pilot and producing an adaptation of a novel that she wants to turn into an HBO miniseries. She says it’s beautiful and, in her words, “will have room to breathe” in that format. “I’m the most excited about that,” she says.

I sensed that excitement on that beautiful afternoon on George.

Katie was effervescent, her stories captivating. To see the gleam in her eyes, the winning smile, and the contentment in her voice was, for me, absolutely gratifying. It’s great to be a Saint— forever.

ABOUT MR. COURIE Lou Courie, an alumnus of Spring Hill College and the University of Alabama, has taught at several schools in the area, at all grade levels. His career at St. Paul’s began in 1982, During that time, he has been department chair, introduced Advanced Placement English to the curriculum, and has taught both senior and junior English.

S

t. Paul’s alumni phone-a-thon was a fun, loud and successful evening. Over 300 alumni were reached and over $21,000 was raised in a mere two hours. A huge thank you to the 49 alumni who attended. The Class of 1991 led the way with the most amount given, with the Class of 1981 a close second. Additionally, the Class of 2007 and 2004 had the highest participation rate.

aints’ Night Out 2016 was another amazing success!

Saints’ Night Out is our largest parent-driven fundraiser, and its proceeds help provide additional resources for our students. Our dedicated parent volunteers, led by Faith Gage and her committee, worked hundreds of hours to ensure Saints’ Night Out was fun and successful. This year 456 tickets were sold and over $130,000 was raised. With fabulous auction items, beautiful decorations and delicious food provided by Clark’s Kitchen, the night at the Alabama Cruise Terminal was enjoyed by all.

he St. Paul’s Alumni and Parent Tennis Tournament was held on October 29, 2015 at the CopelandCox Tennis Center. It was another successful year for the tennis tournament. While it rained elsewhere in Mobile, the dark clouds parted and the sun shined to allow 42 alumni, parents and friends to play tennis and help raise over $5,700. With the proceeds, the Alumni Council supported the girls and boys tennis teams, other student programs and alumni activities.

The players enjoyed a delicious breakfast sponsored by Citrin, Rihner & Gupta Cardiology, P.C., a warm-up clinic offered by Mary Angela Martin Griffith ’11, great door prizes donated by parents, alumni and local businesses and lunch sponsored by Regions Bank. he Alumni Council hosted its fourth annual Spring Golf Tournament at Azalea City Golf Course. Thanks to our lunch sponsor, Hunter Omainsky ’07 and Wintzell’s Oyster House, we had an incredible meal of boiled shrimp, jambalaya, cheese grits and potato salad. Throughout the tournament, the golfers enjoyed freshly shucked oysters on the half shell.

The rain stopped just in time for 100 men and women golfers to tee off at noon with a shotgun start. With support from our corporate sponsors, hole sponsors and players, the tournament raised almost $11,000. For the fourth year in a row, the tournament was chaired by Evans Crowe ’90 and Tommy Clement ’97. Leigh Richardson Hurley and husband Andrew opened Hurley Counseling, LLC in the fall of 2014. Their counseling services are designed to help adults, teenagers, children and families struggling with issues such as relational conflict, depression, anxiety, trauma, school issues, marital communication, divorce, grief, teenage angst and addiction. by McDonald’s as one of the 24 deserving customers from across the country who work long, non-traditional hours in their community. Margie is a registered nurse at the USA Children’s and Women’s Hospital NICU. She was chosen as one of the 24 and honored at her local McDonald’s on Hillcrest in Mobile. They surprised her with a $500 gift certificate for a day of pampering at The Battle House Spa and with All Day Breakfast for the entire NICU staff.

Katie Pastore was the associate producer on the movie Manchester by the Sea. The film premiered on January 23, 2016 in the World Premier section of the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. It was subsequently acquired

by Amazon and is set for a limited release on November 18, 2016, expanding in midDecember.

Lydia Knizley Johnson is co-director of the Raise the Roof Project, which was recognized with a Best Practice Award in the Volunteer/Camper Hospitality category at the ReFrame Association’s 5th Annual National Conference in Johnson City, Tennessee. The award recognizes exceptional hospitality, utilizing unique ways to interact with volunteers before, during and after their home repair service experience. Raise the Roof Project is entirely volunteer-based with the exception of nominal stipends paid to summer college interns.

Tyler Kerns was named the 2015 State Coach of the Year for Girls’ Swimming and Diving. The National Federation of High School’s Coaches Association sponsors this award. Tyler will be recognized at a banquet July 22nd of this year.

Katie Mularz is the state lead in Louisiana for the National Farm to School Network and is the executive director and co-founder for Louisiana Farm to School- a statewide membership based organization working to strengthen the connection communities have with fresh local food. The organization works on supportive policy for farm to school in Louisiana, provides leadership and training opportunities for schools and organizations and coordinates efforts throughout the state. Joey Ferguson is in Auburn’s Engineering co-op program. He is living in Kennesaw, Georgia this semester and working for Batson Cook Construction Company. He has been assigned to the Northside Hospital Cherokee project, the largest healthcare project in the company’s 100 year history.

Joey will alternate school and work for the next year, working two more semesters before graduation to gain hands on engineering experience.

Caroline Hall will be leaving in August for the World Race, an 11-month mission trip, after she graduates from Tulane University.

She will live and serve in the communities of Lesotho, Swaziland, South Africa, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Jamaica, Haiti, and Dominican Republic. To find out more about her work, visit carolinehall.theworldrace.org.

William Kneip was inducted into the Ole Miss Student Hall of Fame.

Lexi Mestas married David Martin Mayhall on March 19, 2016. The Mayhalls live in New Orleans. After graduating in May from Loyola University, David will be working in Washington DC as an intern with the Democratic National Committee. Lexi and David will then move to Rome, Italy in the fall where Lexi will work towards a Master’s Degree in Food Studies.

Jake Coker won a National Championship title as quarterback for the University of Alabama Crimson Tide. He was picked as a free agent by the Arizona Cardinals.

Bess Nichols is a junior at Ole Miss. She serves as the Public Relations Director for The Columns Society. She is also an Ole Miss Orientation Leader, Ole Miss Ambassador, a morale captain for RebelTHON, and a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority, where she has served as a New Member

Rebecca Pober received the Alabama State Daughters of the American Revolution Community Service Award.

Shelley Spires is currently a sophomore participating in both varsity volleyball and track & field at the U.S. Air Force Academy.

John Kyle Doggett received his Computer Engineering degree from Auburn University graduating magna cum laude in December 2015. He is currently employed with Dynetics in Huntsville, AL. Nathan Lucas married Allison Claire Betts on June 20, 2015. Nathan earned a degree in Operations Management from the University of Alabama in May 2015. He is now working as a Logistics Engineer for Austal USA. The Lucases live in Mobile.

Caitlin is staying at USA and will continue her medical training in internal medicine.
