letter from the Head of School
Dear ESK Families and Friends,
Serving for success takes on a whole new meaning this year at ESK. The opening of our tennis complex in early fall has raised much excitement and enthusiasm across the campus for ESK’s most participatory sport. From hosting home matches for the Greater Knoxville Community Tennis Association, to Maestra Rojas’ “Tennis Academy” clinics, ESK’s latest addition is one more step in our program growth and a homecourt convenience loved by students and parents alike.
The tennis project also opens a new door for us to continue our desire to serve the needs of a growing demand for admissions at ESK. This year marks the third year of adding a third section to our kindergarten program. The enrollment bubble is surging through the halls of the lower school, creating a few growing pains and the need for new facility spaces.

The new north camps access road and parking area by the tennis complex will provide an easier construction route to our surveyed expansion areas, as well as plenty of space for temporary solutions if “learning cottages” were ever needed.
A new chapter in ESK’s history has officially begun, and I remain very excited for the opportunities that await our children and their families.
New classrooms, a larger dining hall, and a farmstead filled with animals and gardens are all on the very near horizon waiting to serve up a bright and happy future of success for our ESK students. Grab your racquets and come grow with us!
Best regards,

Seeing Through “God Glasses” The Heart of Book Fridays
There is a new kind of silence in the chapel these days. It isn’t the silence of restless waiting; it’s the leaning-in of a community captivated. Since Pastor Laura joined us, our daily “mini-homilies” and the debut of Book Fridays have turned our communal worship into a vibrant, shared exploration of faith.
Central to this transformation is a simple invitation from Pastor Laura: she asks our students to put on their “God Glasses.” It’s a playful term with a profound purpose, teaching children to look past the surface of everyday stories to find the spiritual heartbeat underneath. In a school of book lovers, our students now “scoot” to the edge of their seats, knowing that when a book is opened, the story is always more than it seems.
A recent favorite, Jabari Jumps by Gaia Cornwall, perfectly illustrates this bridge between the secular and the sacred. While the story follows a young boy facing the daunting height of a diving board, Pastor Laura drew a parallel to the biblical journey of Moses.
The magic of these sessions is that they don’t end when the final page is turned. Through age-appropriate reflection questions sent to every classroom, the conversation ripples in morning meetings throughout the school day.
For our younger students, the focus is on Presence:
Jabari’s dad held his hand and stayed close. How is that like God saying, “I will be with you?”
Jabari made excuses, like “I’ll do it tomorrow.” Why do we say things like that when we’re nervous?
For our older students, the dialogue shifts inward:
Jabari and Moses both hesitated when called to a challenge. Why is it so hard to take that first step?
How do you notice God’s presence in your own life when the “diving board” feels too high?
The comparison was striking: both Jabari and Moses faced “leaps” they didn’t feel ready for. Both wrestled with fear, offered plenty of excuses, and ultimately had to decide if they could trust the voice (and the hand) guiding them.
By integrating diverse titles like The Invisible Boy, Between My Hands, and Enemy Pie, we are doing more than building literacy. We are building character.
This intentional practice provides our students with a common language to navigate their own struggles, fears, and friendships.
By weaving these narratives into the fabric of the school day, Pastor Laura is helping our students see that faith isn’t just something found in a leather-bound book, it’s a lens through which we view the entire world. Through their “God Glasses,” our students are learning to find their own place within the greatest story ever told.
Learning beyond borders
world connections in our classrooms
For eight remarkable weeks, ESK welcomed Guatemalan students, Ana and Guillermo to our ESK home through the Faces and Our Cultures Program, a long-standing partner of our school. Their presence brought fresh cultural perspectives, joyful energy, and meaningful connections, reminding us of the power of learning beyond borders.
Hosted by the Yunsan and Rogers families, Ana and Guillermo embraced life at ESK and in East Tennessee, from riding a tractor through an Appalachian fall to leading choreography during our gym-packed Halloween Parade. They enthusiastically supported Lower School Spanish classes and procured a Guatemalan cultural showcase for our Middle School students. Ana reflected during our Farewell & World Language Chapel on how stepping into new challenges can transform a life, while Guillermo’s heartfelt farewell reminded us that deep connection transcends culture and background.
As we said goodbye just before the 2025 Holiday Break, our hearts were full and grateful. Though Ana and Guillermo have returned home, the friendships, lessons, and global perspective they shared will continue to shape our community for years to come.
In addition to the experiences our students were able to have within the time they spent with their newest Guatelmalan friends, our eighth graders also got to enjoy a global encounter. They loaded up on buses in early November to experience a United States Naturalization Ceremony first hand! As 127 new Americans were welcomed into the country, our students eyes dazzled as they observed the diverse cultural attributes of all the families. Represented were six continents, countless languages and traditions, and now one role they all share in common, their Citizenship of the Unites States of America.
Beyond the pride we felt for our nation, we were especially proud of our eighth-grade Saintly Singers. This talented chamber choir honored the occasion with a resonant performance of the National Anthem. They sounded beautiful and were able to make a memory that will last them a lifetime even more special by solidifying their part in this great welcoming.
Middle School Mastery
Art Middle School The of
It’s no secret that when people hear the words “middle school,” there’s often a pause, likely recalling their own white-knuckled journey through those awkward preteen years. At ESK, however, we see things differently. The middle school years are vitally important in the hardwiring of who our young adults become, both as citizens and as scholars.
Our philosophy is simple: childhood should be celebrated, not rushed.
That’s why ESK remains dedicated to the PreK–8 learning model, an intentional choice rooted in research, child development, and our mission to let students thrive where they are.
Parents will often ask us, “But what about high school?”
We understand this question stems from a desire for continuity, but we approach it from another perspective: what children need most during their formative years. We recognize that ultimately, ages 11 through 14 constitute the second most rapid phase of neurological development in a child’s life, surpassed only by the window from birth to age three.
During these years, students undergo profound physical, emotional, social, and cognitive growth, including the leap from concrete to abstract thinking.
“Not having a high school allows our students to have a fresh start and let go of outside narratives that keep them from evolving.”
Annie
Caulder,
Middle School Counselor
With so much transformation happening, is it possible to choose the “right” high school for a child at age three, five, or even eleven? Rather than predicting future needs, ESK focuses on the present, creating a safe, nurturing environment where children can be themselves and are supported at their exact stage of development.
We nurture the whole child, cultivating confidence, resilience, and meaningful relationships alongside rigorous, developmentally appropriate learning.
Our middle school curriculum emphasizes more than high-quality academics. By supporting students rather than pushing them to grow up too soon, we safeguard their natural curiosity and joy for learning well into the middle school years. This process is introduced with a first class ticket to Tribe 11.
Crafted
The ESK Way
So what is Tribe 11 all about?
Tribe 11 is one of the most exciting ways ESK is fostering its middle school community. Coined by our own Dr. Talmadge, Tribe 11 brings together 5th and 6th grade students, two groups proven to be close in development and maturity, into a formal program that strengthens relationships and builds a greater sense of belonging on campus. Through Tribe 11, students are connecting in meaningful ways: eating lunch together, playing at recess, and forming mentor/mentee bonds that carry beyond the classroom.
The program’s benefits are clear: students feel more supported, more connected, and more engaged in school life.
Tribe 11 grew out of ESK’s long-standing commitment to the Tribes Agreements, which have guided our school community since 2000. These six learning agreements: Honesty, The Right to Pass/Participate, Attentive Listening, Mutual Respect, Appreciations/No Put Downs, and Let Go and Move On, serve as the foundation for how we treat one another. They drive everything we do, nurturing a culture of caring, belonging, and respect. By extending these principles into Tribe 11, ESK continues to give students opportunities to learn, grow, and thrive together.
The results speak for themselves. By the time they graduate 8th grade, matriculating to schools all over the US and Knoxville area, ESK students have a strong sense of self and thrive where they land. Before leaving our halls, students serve as role models for younger peers and leave with both academic competence and the confidence to take risks, try, fail, and blossom. Alumni consistently share how valuable it was to transition from 8th grade to high school, noting how well-prepared they felt for success in college and beyond.
“Our vision for Tribe 11 is to cement relationships between 5th & 6th graders, so they stop seeing each other as others, but as a unified group.”
Margaret Googe, 5th Grade Teacher & Tribe 11 Leader
Another benefit?
Without the distraction of a high school on campus, our focus remains entirely on where our students are right now. We avoid the pressures of early college admission, entrance exams, or varsity athletics. Our middle school students experience wonder and discovery, all while developing independence and strong autonomy.
Our board’s commitment stands firm: ESK will continue to capture the essence of childhood through our early childhood to 8th grade model. Here, every child is celebrated for their unique gifts and equipped with the strategies they need to excel…not just at ESK, but for life.
Second Gets a Riding the Enrollment Bubble THIRD! THIRD!
The Episcopal School of Knoxville is now in its third year of a thoughtfully planned lateral expansion, a steady and intentional approach that has allowed our community to grow while remaining rooted in the values that define ESK. Each year, the school has expanded by adding one additional class per grade, following the Class of 2032 as it moves through the Lower and Middle School, ensuring growth remains both manageable and meaningful. This year marks another exciting milestone in that journey with the introduction of a third section of second grade.
Along the way, ESK has been blessed to welcome outstanding educators who have helped bring this vision to life. In the first year of expansion, Ms. Heather Blount joined the Kindergarten team, followed by Mrs. Brittany
This year, we are delighted to welcome Mrs. Bates as she leads our newest second-grade section. These additions have strengthened our classrooms and enriched the daily experience of our students, reinforcing the importance of advancing with purpose and care. Perhaps the most encouraging part of this expansion has been how naturally it has unfolded. The ESK family has embraced each new group of students with open arms, proving once again that community is at the heart of who we are. After all, what could be better than 18 extra smiles filling our hallways each year?
As this enrollment bubble continues to grow, so too does our excitement for the future, and while the question of where we’ll put everyone next remains, our enthusiasm for what’s ahead is unwavering.
Courts
Serving Up New Opportunities for ESK Student Athletes
ESK is ready to net new opportunities, serve up excitement, and ace every moment on and off the court.
A new chapter in ESK athletics has arrived and the spirit of sport is stronger than ever as we introduce four regulation-size tennis courts to our campus! Rising from the wooded area behind the Middle School, our students are ready for fast rallies and fierce competition. This project has been eagerly awaited by students, families, and coaches alike, especially given the strength and spirit of our long-standing tennis program. The courts made their official debut this fall and immediately became a hub of activity. They served our six ESK tennis teams throughout a fantastic season and provided an inviting home for after school clubs, clinics, and special gatherings. Our first major event on the new courts was the Class of 2025 Alumni Reunion (see page 18 for more reunion details!).
Campus
These stunning new courts are just one part of a broader campus vision that also brought a new service road and additional parking, both of which opened alongside the courts this fall. Together, these enhancements create a vibrant, welcoming space for Saints and other school visitors from across Knoxville. As our community continues to grow, these improvements ensure that students, faculty, and families alike have the support and space they need, all while keeping the warm atmosphere that ESK is known for.
For some members of our community, this moment has been awaited longer than others. Our beloved Maestra Alicia Rojas Haub has been the heartbeat of ESK tennis for many years, faithfully nurturing the program and building traditions that students carry with them long after graduation. Seeing her step onto courts that truly feel like home has been inspiring.
“For a long time there, chica, I didn’t know if we were ever going to see the day when we had courts. But, now I’m more excited than ever to take ESK’s tennis program to the next level!”
- Alicia Rojas Haub
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to The Ralph B. Rogers Foundation, The Lantry Foundation, and to all other generous donors who helped make this project possible. Their support has created a facility that stands as a true point of pride for ESK. As our campus grows alongside our student body, we know this is only the beginning of what is to come.
In Loving Memory of Paul Siler
A Legacy Woven Across Our Campus
From the athletic center to Siler Hall, his generosity and spirit touched every part of ESK.
The Episcopal School of Knoxville mourns the passing of Paul Siler, a devoted supporter, long-time friend, and cherished member of both our school and the greater Knoxville community. Alongside his wife, Susie, Paul was among the earliest supporters of ESK, and his dedication has left an indelible mark on our school. A grandfather to ESK students and a steadfast advocate for the values that define our community, Paul shared his time, wisdom, humor, and unwavering commitment generously with all who knew him.
From the Siler Athletic Center to Siler Hall, spanning the west and east ends of campus, Paul’s legacy endures as a lasting testament to his generosity. Yet, beyond these tangible contributions, it was his warmth, friendship, and good humor that truly defined him. Whether sharing a laugh, showing off his skill on the golf course, or cheering passionately for Vol Nation, Paul had a way of leaving a lasting impression on everyone he met. His spirit lives on in the smiles and enthusiasm of his grandson Reed Siler, a current ESK fifth grader, and in the memories of ESK alumni Will (’08) and Elise (’11) Walker.
Paul’s generosity extended far beyond ESK. In the Knoxville community, he devoted countless hours to civic service, most notably through his years on the Salvation Army Knoxville Advisory Board, where he was honored as a Life Member. He also contributed as a member of the Knoxville Rotary Club, President of the Tennessee Automotive Association, a University of Tennessee Chancellor’s Associate, and as a graduate of Leadership Knoxville. His dedication and service enriched the lives of many and left a permanent impact on our city.
As we reflect on Paul’s life, we are reminded of the extraordinary ways he gave of himself, his time, his talents, and his heart. Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy endures in the countless lives he touched, the community he strengthened, and the spirit he shared so well with those around him. Paul Siler will forever hold a special place in the heart of the Episcopal School of Knoxville, and we are profoundly grateful for the privilege of having known him.

Remembering Tim Parker
A Pioneer of ESK
“Athletic
Director, Dean of Students, P.E. teacher, multi-sport coach, part-time DJ, and full-time embarrasser of his own children”
As the seeds of ESK continue to grow into oaks of lasting legacy, many of our original Saints are finding their way back to campus, a testament to the deep roots planted during their time here. With these returns come joyful memories and reflections on days gone by, though at times, they are accompanied by a heavy heart. Today, we pause to remember the life of Mr. Tim Parker, known to many simply as “Coach Parker.”
The story of ESK cannot be told without its foundational figures, and Tim was undoubtedly one of them. From the earliest days, as the ground was broken and learning cottages took shape, he was present at every step, sometimes with shovel in hand, other times gently redirecting curious children away from shiny construction equipment. While many remember him first through athletics, Tim wore many hats during his time at ESK. During the school day, he led Physical Education classes, and as afternoons turned to evenings, he transitioned seamlessly into coaching numerous athletic teams. As Athletic Director, he also planned and coordinated those programs, making him a constant and energetic presence across campus. This physical education enthusiast was, indeed, a busy man.
ACWhat truly set Tim apart was his remarkable ability to connect with students from all walks of life. That gift eventually led him to serve as Dean of Students, where his steady leadership, genuine care, and childlike charm made him the ideal guide in shaping students of strong character and integrity.
While his love for ESK was evident, Tim’s greatest devotion was always to his family. His beloved wife, Missy, and his three children, Kathy, Macy, and Sam always were his number one.
Though there may no longer be a campus “morning circle” to shake out wiggles, an open-air chapel, or lunches served family-style, the imprint Tim Parker left on this school remains unmistakable. His presence helped shape the heart of ESK. He was a true treasure to our community and is dearly missed.

Fall 2025
ESK United Nations History
Our
7th graders made ESK HISTORY with 100% of their resolutions passing at this year’s Model United Nations Conference! Their outstanding participation and execution were recognized across the board. Two of our students won awards as Outstanding Delegates and six teams won awards for Outstanding Resolutions. The group traveled to Murfreesboro, TN bright and early, where they met with hundreds of other middle schoolers. Their hard work, dedication, and teamwork were truly evident as they represented their assigned countries with poise and professionalism. From researching global issues to delivering speeches and engaging in diplomatic negotiations, they demonstrated an impressive level of preparation and maturity. Their confidence and enthusiasm not only made them valuable contributors to the conference, but also showcased their commitment to learning about the world and the importance of international cooperation. It was an inspiring experience, and we couldn’t be more proud of their achievements.
Author Visit: Charlotte Gunnufson
Kindergarten and first grade had an immersive experience welcoming Charlotte Gunnufson, children’s author and storyteller extraordinaire! Charlotte brought Hard Hat Hank to life with humor, heart, and a touch of imagination. From learning about the writing process, to discovering her inspiration behind her books, students left feeling inspired to write their own stories!
Niblet
ESK Pony Pal
One thing’s for sure; life at ESK is never boring. This fall we introduced a pint-sized bundle of fluff and charm… meet Nibblet, a 7-year-old Shetland Pony! Nibblet was adopted by one of our wonderful alum, Gracie Biggs. And luckily for us, he trotted by to say hi and spread some serious smiles.
Cold Case files: critical thinking in the real world
Seventh grade students stepped into the role of detectives as they worked to solve a simulated cold case. Using “authentic” materials such as police reports, crime scene photos, coroner’s findings, and witness statements, they sifted through evidence, identified key details, and pieced together the truth. Along the way, students sharpened their analytical thinking, organization, and note-taking skills, all while learning how to separate fact from opinion and determine which information is most relevant. This hands-on investigation not only builds problem-solving strategies, but also gives students a thrilling glimpse into the real-world applications of critical thinking.

Have you heard? You Leave a BIG mark on this world!
Our Junior Kindergarten students have been joyfully celebrating the power of the dot! Dot Week, a favorite ESK tradition, is inspired by Peter H. Reynolds’ beloved book The Dot. Through the story, students learned how a caring teacher helps a hesitant child discover her creativity and courage by simply daring her to “make her mark.” Just like in the book, our children are encouraged, not only during this week, but always, to explore their creativity and leave a mark on the world that is uniquely their own.
The celebration continued with an artistic journey into the world of Yayoi Kusama, the queen of polka dots. Students sang and danced along to Polka Dot Pants and The Dot Song, painted vibrant dot canvases, and even transformed our classrooms, trees, and themselves with dots. Most importantly, they left their own joyful marks all across our school.
To say they had fun would be an understatement!
Grandparents’ & Special Friends’ Day 2025
The grandest yet!
This year’s ESK Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day was truly one for the record books, the largest gathering we’ve ever welcomed to campus! From the moment the day began, it was clear just how special it would be. Every parking spot was filled (and even a few creative “not-quiteparking” spots were claimed), a sure sign of the excitement and love that brought our community together.
Inside, not a single seat was left empty. Coffee flowed freely as grandparents and special friends
shared smiles, stories, and plenty of proud moments while watching their Saints shine. The energy was warm, joyful, and unmistakably ESK.
Our gymnasium was absolutely bursting at the seams, and we loved every minute of it. The incredible turnout was an overwhelming reminder of the strong bonds that surround our students and the generations of support that help them grow. What a gift it was to celebrate together!

Fewfamilies have left a mark on ESK like the Rasnicks. Dylan, Kaylie, and Myles, children to Episcopal superstars, Thom and Cindy Rasnick, each walked ESK’s halls, participated in its traditions, and helped shape the vibrant community we know today. Their connection to the school remains strong, with Cindy continuing to inspire students as a part of our beloved first grade team.
During his time at ESK, Myles cultivated both the confidence and resilience within the classroom and on court that helped propel him through an impressive basketball journey. After high school, Myles transitioned to Maryville College in 2021 and quickly became one of the most decorated players in program history. Over his four-year career with the Maryville Scots, he scored more than 1,000 points, led the team in multiple statistical categories, and set program records for both single-season and career free throw percentage.
Myles Rasnik Myles Rasnick
His outstanding senior season earned him Collegiate Conference of the South Player of the Year honors, First Team All-Region recognition, and a place as just the fourth All-American in Maryville basketball history.
Following graduation, Myles continued his basketball career professionally as his skills went global and he set out overseas, competing in Poland and Latvia, where he excelled as a scorer and playmaker. Now back home, Myles has returned to Maryville College as an assistant men’s basketball coach, bringing his experience and leadership to the next generation of players. His deep understanding of the game and commitment to helping others grow make him a natural mentor and an exciting part of the Scots’ future.
Both academically and athletically, Myles pushed himself to become the best version of who he wanted to be. ESK helped shape his belief in himself and his abilities, and early nurturing gave him the confidence to take on new challenges and pursue his dreams with determination, as well as a big cheering section to root for him along the way. As he continues his journey in coaching, ESK is proud of all he has accomplished and will always have open doors (especially in the first grade hall) to hear about all of the exciting things he’s doing next!

Diverse Perspectives, One Beautiful Community
In a stunning symphony of pigment and purpose, our students turned the ‘how’ of our daily lives into a visual tapestry that captures the pure, unfiltered brilliance of our youngest leaders. Under the creative direction of our lower school art teacher, Mrs. Toni Mealor, the central hallway was transformed into a stunning gallery titled “Let’s Draw About Tribes Agreements”.
More Than Just Etiquette
At our school, the Tribes Agreements aren’t just “one more thing” on the to-do list; they are the foundation of how we do what we do. They are the heartbeat of our classrooms. The installation beautifully visualizes these six core principles:
A Multi-Sensory Experience
The installation isn’t just for the eyes, it’s for the ears, too. Interspersed with the artwork is the full text of our Tribes song. Even better, each board features a QR code. When scanned, you can hear a recording of our students singing the Tribes Agreement song during the Lower School chapel on September 5, 2025. It brings an extra layer of magic to the hallway to hear those voices while viewing their creations. It’s more than just an art show; it’s a reflection of who we are as a community.
A Unique Point of View
One of the most striking things about this display is its organization. Instead of grouping the art by grade level, Mrs. Mealor arranged the pieces by the Tribes Agreement itself. This layout allows us to see how a first-grader’s interpretation of “Attentive Listening” might differ from a student in fourth grade, or even that of a peer of the same grade. It’s a powerful reminder that while we all see the world through different eyes, we are united by these
As demonstrated by this work, we are diverse, but our character is what bridges us. We have now expressed that common bond through a colorful and
