It may seem early to be discussing how the year is ending and the opportunities that will be presented, but once Labor Day is here year end planning seems to begin. Export/Trade Summit Set Save the date for Tuesday, October 8th as the Eden Prairie Chamber will be hosting an Export/Trade Summit in coordination with the Minnesota Trade Office. Leadership Chill in the air & a “Splash of Blu” By: Cathy Haukedahl, Board Chair Flagship Bank

The mornings have a chill in the air, summer hours are over and vacations ended with the children going back to school.

In Minnesota, Labor Day changes everything. Shifting from summer’s pace to the new focus September brings, often feels more like a “beginning” than New Year’s Day. Early fall has consistently been a time of fresh learning, opportunities and a commitment to excel once again. The pace is picking up now with the awareness that there is only one full quarter left this year to meet our year-end goals, objectives and the New Year’s resolutions that started a full nine months ago.

In addition to the anticipation that comes with “start of school”, it is also a time of harvest. Are you reaping the rewards of what you’ve sown so far in 2013? Are you on track to finish this year strong through the holiday season?

Time waits for no one and as the daylight shortens. These next few months hold a great opportunity to wrap up a fantastic year. The benefit for all of us is that many of our business associates have the same mindset. As a member community, could collaborating with another Chamber member be a solution for your organization to meet or exceed your annual or quarterly objectives?

After a short precious summer of connecting with friends and family, this new season is a great time to expand our knowledge, networks and contributions. Your Chamber membership offers you access to all three.

Like you, our Chamber’s goal is to finish the year strong, too. Our organization could not be as successful as we are without our wonderful staff, volunteers and membership involvement. Our traditional way to finish our final quarter of the year is with our annual gala. Building Successful Businesses Finding Your Selling Process By: Steve Callender Effective Learning for Growth

If you want to improve how you sell your product or service, a good first step is to figure out your own process. Without that, it’s guesswork and luck – you might improve what counts, or you might waste time and effort working on what doesn’t matter.

When you map out a process, you can see how it’s working. You can measure it. You can see what efforts lead to what results, and what’s wasted or inefficient. You can improve its efficiency, continually, so you get more sales for less work.

So how do you do that? It’s a process (of course!).

Start with defining your target audience – because defining it too widely leads to a lot of wasted time and frustration. Who are your best customers? How did you reach them? Why did they choose you?

Most importantly, where will you find more like them? This is where interviewing your favorite customers is important, because they’ll tell you what value you bring. They can also tell you what they read, what associations or groups they’re in, how they look for products or services like yours. That’s what’s essential for the marketing part of selling.

What’s your plan to reach out to more like your best customers? How will you generate a list of the ones you most want to work with? What sort of outreach plan (advertising, social media, email campaigns, phone work, etc.) do you use? When you write it down, map it out, put it on your schedule and allocate resources (time, money, effort) to it, you can measure your returns to see how well your plans work.

What do you do at first contact? What are your goals and objectives in a first meeting or call? How will you achieve those objectives? How do you qualify that you’re talking to the right person about a real need they can do something about? How do you get introduced to the right person, if that’s not the first one you meet? By writing this down, you’ll be able to tell how well it’s working – and if it’s not working, how to change it.

The same goes for the rest of your sales process • What’s your follow-up after that first contact?

• How and when do you ask for their business?

• How do you handle objections or delays?

• How do you process the order when they say “Yes?” • What do you do when they say “No?” • How do you get back to them to verify satisfaction?

• How do you ask for referrals?

When you know and track how your sales process works, you can make it work better.

Community Building Update from the Eden Prairie School District

Hang on to your backpacks! Another school year in Eden Prairie is about to begin and the district has many exciting things happening during this school year. Here are a few of the highlights happening in Eden Prairie Schools.

Superintendent Tryggestad presents revised referendum proposals – At the July 24 board meeting, Superintendent Curt Tryggestad and district administrators presented information on revised referendum proposals to the school board. The district currently has an operating levy that generates about $13 million per year. This levy is set to expire after the 2014-2015 school year. The district’s technology/capital projects levy, which generates about $6 million each year for technology equipment, infrastructure and staff support, will also expire after the 2014-2015 school year. As part of the presentation to the board, district administrators shared information from a community survey conducted in July by Decision Resources, Ltd., a Minneapolis-based research firm. The district had conducted a more comprehensive survey in February 2013. Both surveys indicated that with a strong communication effort, community support exists for the operating levy and the technology/capital projects levy. “The information presented to the board represents the most current information on the legislative changes and our best thinking on how to best meet the future needs of our district,” Tryggestad said. “We are looking forward to assisting the board with its consideration of the referendum ballot questions and to sharing more detailed information with our community.” (This information was submitted for the Chamber newsletter in early August, prior to the board’s final decision on the referendum. 3 EPHS Seniors Post Perfect ACTs – EPHS seniors Jacob Dungan, Ella Johnson, and Sasha Warbritton all earned a top composite score of 36 on the ACT. Nationally, while the actual number of students earning a composite score of 36 varies from year to year, less than one-tenth of one percent of students who take the ACT earn a top score. The ACT consists of tests in English, mathematics, reading and science. Each test is scored on a scale of 1 to 36, and a student's composite score is the average of the four test scores. Some students also take ACT’s optional Writing Test, but the score for that test is reported separately and is not included within the ACT composite score. ACT test scores are accepted by all major U.S. colleges, and exceptional scores of 36 provide colleges with evidence of student readiness for the academic rigors that lie ahead.

Scholarship Recipient Hired – Amy Madvig, recipient of the 2012-13 Eden Prairie Schools Multicultural Scholarship, has been hired as a special education teacher at Eden Lake Elementary. Amy is a 2013 graduate of Augsburg College, with teaching licenses in emotional behavior disorders and learning disabilities. She was a student teacher at Prairie View Elementary. The EPS Multicultural Scholarship is one of the ways the district works to fulfill its mission of “educating for success in our diverse and changing world,” and its commitment to close the education gap for students of color. It helps ensure that there are qualified teachers with multicultural backgrounds who have high expectations for all of their students and are able to culturally connect with students of color. The district will begin the process of selection for next year’s scholarship in October when applications are made available at Minnesota colleges and universities. The scholarship is in the amount of $3,000, for one semester.

School board election – Candidate filings for the November 5, 2013, school board election closed on Tuesday, August 13. There are three director seats up for election this year. Caroline Emswiler Brings Wall Street to Eden Prairie

New York. Transamerica Financial Advisors, Inc. (TFA) congratulates Caroline Emswiler, CFP®, President of WEALTH Financial Consultants, Inc. of Eden Prairie for attending the Wall Street Academy. The Academy is a comprehensive, professional training program that was conducted in the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) for select independent financial advisors. Ms. Emswiler was one of only 20 who attended this highly specialized training during the third week of July.

Greico Financial Training Institute, a long standing Wall Street educational firm, led by James Greico, conducted the experiential training.

Mr. Greico is a recognized leader in training within the securities industry and a highly-respected member of the Wall Street community.

The weeklong program included classroom education in the equity markets, economics, financial indicators interpretation, fundamental analysis, technical analysis, bond markets, hedging strategies, portfolio construction, and the historical events that shaped the securities industry. The Academy concluded the classroom training with branding, communication skills, and creating the ideal client experience.

Outside of the classroom, Ms. Emswiler was invited to the floor of the New York Stock Exchange to observe the floor brokers and market makers to obtain first-hand, behind-the-scenes knowledge of how the Exchange functions. She was a guest of the Deutsche Bank’s Institutional Equity Group where she was exposed to the inner workings of the institutional trade functions and its support of the mutual fund and securities industries. In addition, she toured the NY Federal Reserve, where she gained valuable insight into the workings of the Federal Reserve and its impact on the economy.
