2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup Draw Two big announcements greeted U.S. Women’s National Team fans in time for the holiday season: The Americans will go on a 10-game, 10-city tour in preparation for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France—with a stop at Chester’s Talen Energy Stadium—and they learned of their draw for that world cup. The defending champion and world No. 1 USWNT will be in Group F, where they’ll meet Thailand, Chile and Sweden.

The Americans open the tournament on June 11 against Thailand.

The draw is a good one for the United States. While Sweden is a traditional power, Thailand and Chile will be playing in their second and first world cup respectively. The Swedes pose a threat—after all they defeated the Americans in a penalty shootout at the 2016 Summer Olympics—but progression to the knockout stages shouldn’t be too much of a challenge for the USWNT.

MEET THE COACH

Richard Chinapoo, Technical Director - Capital Area Soccer Association Richard Chinapoo, a Trindad & Tobago native and Long Island University grad, started his professional career with the New York Cosmos before enjoying a long stint in the indoor circuit, playing for such franchises as the Baltimore Blast, Dallas Sidekicks and Harrisburg Heat. During his time with the Heat, Ricard got into coaching with Capital Area Soccer Association (CASA), where he now serves as the Technical Director. He recently invited members of the Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer staff to speak to his club coaches about coaching education and initiatives within youth soccer.

Richard chatted with the Evolving Game about soccer in the capital area.

What is it about this part of the state that you’ve enjoyed so much?

I decided to stay here back in 1997, because it’s a good place to raise a family. No traffic, close to Philadelphia, close to Baltimore, close to Washington, D.C. And then, playing here with friends, and you create this opportunity.

(CASA) formed and gave me the opportunity to become the technical director and share my knowledge. I stayed with the club for 17 years. I decided I had enough of the cold weather. And my wife wanted to move, so we moved to Miami. 2014 was when I left. The club called me back.

2017 was the beginning, they were going through some changes and wanted to settle things down. One of the keys is my daughter was born and raised here. She wants to be here.

That’s half the reason I’m still up

here in sweaters and jackets and gloves.

We talked about the amount of quality players that are coming out of this area before, why do you think that is? What’s the secret to the player development (in central Pennsylvania)?

I think in most cities that have or had a professional franchise, whether it was outdoor or indoor, and those players decide to stay and invest into the community, that’s going to benefit the kids. So the excitement of these kids being able to watch professional soccer and then these professionals turning around and sharing that knowledge. On top of that, the big part is the education: (Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer) coming out and sharing the path and the knowledge and the changes with these young, aspiring coaches who have played the game, I think, that trend and that path is going to continue. The kids are going to benefit. We’ve had a number of

franchises here: The Harrisburg Heat, the Wildcats, Penn FC (formerly the City Islanders). (We have) tons of professional players who have stayed here, and most of these guys are directors at local clubs. They care about the kids. They care about what they do. We want the kids to enjoy the game. That’s what we want to develop—people who play the game, have a passion for the game, so when they get a little older, they want to be coaches.

MEET THE COACH

Richard Chinapoo, Technical Director - Capital Area Soccer Association Speaking of young coaches, if a coach asked you, “What’s the most important thing for me to develop young players,” what would you say?

There’s such a balance of working with young kids. It’s really about… they have to love the game. And we have to be honest as coaches, as educators, as evaluators, and be honest with kids and their parents. ‘This is what you need to work on.’

There’s so much to learn about the game, even at the professional level and the international level. These guys are working daily to improve their skills, maintain their skills. These

kids have to understand all the work that goes into it, all the emotions you’re going to go through— the good times of winning, the bad times of not winning, a bad practice, conflicts. You have to be able to deal with that. So it’s really about developing young people who can handle situations. I also want kids to feel empowered. (Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer Technical Director) Mike (Barr) talked about creativity. Kids, when they play, do what you feel is right. In the game, if you feel

it’s right, go for it. If it’s not right, in my opinion, the coaches will discuss it. But if you feel it’s right, do it. The game is a game of mistakes. Minimize your mistakes. More often than not, you should have success.

Gregg Berhalter Named U.S. Men’s National Team Manager After a months-long search, Gregg Berhalter, formerly of Columbus Crew SC, was named head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team on December 2. Berhalter becomes the first United States world cup veteran to return to the national team as head coach. In Columbus, where he oversaw all soccer operations as Head Coach and Sporting Director, Berhalter gained a reputation for playing attractive, successful soccer. Crew SC made the MLS Playoffs four times in his five seasons in charge and reached reached the 2015 MLS Cup. [!4England, ] As a player, Berhalter had stops in the Netherlands, Germany and the United States. He also represented the United States at two world cups, 2002 in South Korea-Japan and 2006 in Germany.

CONOCE AL ENTRENADOR Antonio Bayon, Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer Coaching Education Desde que se mudó de su natal España a Filadelfia, Antonio Bayón ha sido parte integral de touchline—sea con Eastern Pensylvania Olimpic Development Program o a nivel de Club en el condado de Bucks.

El vallisoletano ha sido también una figura importante en la sección de Coaching Education de Eastern Pensylvania Youth Soccer. Hemos hablado con Antonio sobre su filosofía de coaching y su transición a un nuevo idioma en lo que a fútbol se refiere. ¿Cuando decidiste volverte entrenador y pensaste que ibas a quedarte por tanto tiempo?

Nunca pensé en ser entrenado.

Yo cuando era jugador, la verdad es que nunca pensé en entrenar. Me hice entrenador porque cuando mis hijos empezaron a jugar al futbol, un entrenador Americano, era el entrenador de mi hijo y yo un día vi la práctica. Con mucho respeto le dije, ‘no quiero ser entrenador, pero si necesitas ayuda yo juegue en España hace muchos años y cualquier cosa, yo encantado de ayudar’.

Y así empecé de ahí a donde estoy hoy en Coaching Education. ¿Que fue le diferencia del futbol español as futbol estadunidense?

Cuando yo vine, la diferencia inicialmente era bastante grande. La calidad del futbol europeo español era bastante

mejor. Hoy, aunque la calidad aquí en los estados unidos ha subido bastante de cuando vine, hay todavía una diferencia grandísima. Y el hecho que nosotros en Europa o en España especialmente, la calidad tan grande es simplemente cultural.

Nosotros desde que somos niños jugamos en la calles sin ninguna ayuda de adultos. Y es simplemente que está en la raza. Aquí en los estados unidos, por ejemplo somos muy buenos en basquetbol porque lo hacen siempre en la calle y no hay nadie que tiene que decir que hay que entrenar, entrenar, entrenar. Y una vez más la diferencia es simplemente cultural. Pero hay que sobresaltar también, de que hoy por hoy hay buenos jugadores americanos, buenos entrenadores americanos y hay muchos jugadores americanos jugando en Europa que están triunfando. Espero que de aquí a 10 o 15 años sigamos sacando buenos jugadores y exportándolos al extranjero. ¿Hubo lenguajes o ideas del futbol español que no podías transmitir a los niños de aquí porque no hay una palabra que lo describa bien?

Al principio me costó bastante transmitir mensaje a los jugadores, especialmente a los pequeños. Como decirles, regatear, pasar en profundidad, o el pasar en espacio, más que nada por el inglés mío. Pero también de que no podía sacar la palabra especial o la palabra

ideal para decirle a un jugador que tiene que hacer. Así es que en esos momentos, hace años lo mejor que pude hacer es envés de hablar, yo siempre demostraba, y si hacían errores o se hacían cosas mal yo decía esto es lo que has hecho tú, y esto es lo que estoy esperando de que puedas hacer. Si era regatear, si era pasar en profundidad, si era tirar o lo que fuera tenía la habilidad en aquellos momentos de poder demostrarles y así ellos podían ver si hacían los errores y que es lo que queríamos que pudieran hacer.

CONOCE AL ENTRENADOR

Antonio Bayon, Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer Coaching Education ¿Y cómo te ayudo crecer como entrenado?

No sé cómo se dice la palabra humble [humilde ] lo tengo que mirar, pero la transición de jugador a entrenador o la transición de espectador a entrenador es increíble, y es tan, tan, importante, que eh crecido tanto como entrenador. Te voy a decir una cosa, simplemente porque hayas jugado a cualquier nivel pero si has jugado profesionalmente y quieres entrenar profesionalmente, simplemente porque hayas jugado eso no traduce a que si vas a ser un buen entrenador.

Hay mucha gente que no hay jugado a un nivel alto y son tremendos entrenadores. Para mí personalmente el enseñar a niños como regatear, como pasar, y como tirar y demostrarlo fue el principio de como empecé a crecer como entrenador. Una vez que hice los cursos de la federación americana aprendí tanto a entrenar mucho más en todos los cursos que realice, que como jugador. Como jugador yo aprendí de mis todos los entrenadores que tuve, pero

nunca aprendí tanto que en todos los cursos que eh realizado desde la D, al B, al A, eh aprendido muchísimo. Y por supuesto en con los años entre mas aprendes tomas más cursos, mejor entrenador eres. ¿Muy buena información, ahora con tu equipo el Real Valladolid, como está ahora, que piensas en ellos, y el partido contra el Real Madrid este Sábado, 3 de noviembre?

Mira, yo jugué en el Real Valladolid muchos años y cuando jugaba allí estábamos en tercera división [Segunda División B] hace 8 años estaba yo entrenando a Gettysburg College y fui una semana, casi diez días a ver entrenar al Real Valladolid.

Estuve con ellos 10 diez apuntando todas las prácticas en preparación para jugar contra el Real Madrid. Jugaron en Madrid en el Bernabéu, estuve invitado al Bernabéu para ver al Valladolid. ¡Y por desgracia, después de una semana increíble con buenos entrenamientos con todo diseñado les metieron 7! Espero

que este año que han vuelto a primera división, que tengan mejor suerte. Pero hoy, no importa el resultado, hoy, el día de hoy el Valladolid esta en sexta posición y está encima del real Madrid y eso en muchos años no lo hemos visto. Así es que esperemos que por lo menos haya un empate, pero tienen una buena plantilla.

La última pregunta ¿Dónde se puede encontrar la mejor comida española en Filadelfia?

En mi casa!
