SeaWorld killer whale at the center of “Blackfish” film dies

TAMPA - Tilikum, the orca who killed several people and was featured in the documentary “Blackfish” making the case against keeping orcas in captivity, died on Friday, SeaWorld Entertaintment Inc said.

Thought to be about 36 years old, Tilikum drew international attention for dragging a SeaWorld trainer underwater to her death during a 2010 show in Florida.

Tilikum had been experiencing declining health and receiving treatment for a bacterial lung infection, the company said in a news release. It noted that an official cause of death would not be known until a necropsy was completed.

“Tilikum had, and will continue

to have, a special place in the hearts of the SeaWorld family, as well as the millions of people all over the world that he inspired,” SeaWorld President and CEO Joel Manby said in a statement.

The theme park saw its image tarnished after the release of the 2013 documentary, which depicted the captivity and public exhibition of killer whales as cruel.

The film chronicled the life of Tilikum, who was captured in 1983 around the age of 2. He spent 25 years in SeaWorld’s care.

“From the moment he was taken from his ocean family, his life was tragic and filled with pain, as are the lives of the other animals who remain in SeaWorld’s tanks and exhibits,” Lisa Lange, senior vice president for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) in a statement.

Tilikum was bred 21 times, with 11 of his offspring previously dying, PETA noted.

After the documentary and protests by PETA, SeaWorld cut jobs, lost promotional deals and faced attendance drops. The company last year pledged to stop breeding killer whales in captivity and to phase out its whale entertainment shows. Mexicans march against gas price hike, little looting

MEXICO CITY — A protest against Mexico’s 20-percent gasoline price hike turned violent Saturday after a lone protester drove his truck into a line of police guarding a fuel distribution terminal in Baja California. Federal police said seven officers were injured in the incident in Rosarito, near the border city of Tijuana.

Video showed the small pickup driving straight into the line of riot police, then backing up and speeding off. Largely peaceful protests against the fuel price increases continued elsewhere in Mexico Saturday, and looting seen earlier in the week largely subsided. But nervousness remained.

Officials in Veracruz, one of the states hardest-hit by the looting on Wednesday and Thursday, said some neighborhood groups had begun to form patrols of residents armed with staves or machetes to ward off looters. Veracruz Gov. Miguel Angel Yunes Linares said 532 people had been detained in his state alone and that social rumors of further looting — apparently unfounded — had caused “an artificial psychosis.”

He said that in the northern part of the state, given this psychosis, “the neighbors decided to arm themselves with staves, machetes,

creating the impression that there were armed groups of criminals.”

Yunes Linares said the government was trying to convince residents to stop such patrolling.

The Interior Department reported a total of more than 1,500 people have been detained for looting or disturbances nationwide since protests began early in the week.

Unemployment dominated by college graduates

Academicians asked to evaluate education system

DENPASAR - The government of Bali Province looked for input and solutions in addressing the unemployment trends dominated by college graduates (diploma and bachelor). This was revealed by a number of university leaders, entrepreneurs and Bali House of Representatives in the interactive dialogue in the form of workshop entitled “Who Unemployed in Bali?” in the Wiswa Sabha Utama, Bali governor’s office on Saturday (Jan. 7).

Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, said that the number of unemployed intellectuals will continue to grow if they are not given

serious attention. Primarily due to graduation at several universities, it is estimated to reach 25,000 people each year.

The academicians even asked to evaluate the education system in order to be able to produce graduates in appropriate with the needs of job markets. In addition, the universities are also asked to adjust the department to be opened pursuant to the demand of labor market.

“Most importantly, they work and it is not necessary in the formal

To motivate younger generation, Pastika said that unemployed people are just like parasites that undermine parents. “Eliminate the mentality of beggar, it is better handing on rather than handing down,” he added.

Rector of the Udayana University, Prof. Dr. Ketut Suastika, considers that this phenomenon occurs because there is something wrong in the education system.

One of them is that so far that most curricula are still focused on pure academic subjects without poised with the provision of practical skills so that graduates are ready to be deeply involved in the world of work.

“Therefore, some of our graduates are not yet ready to work.

They still need additional training courses and other life skills,” he said.

Chairman of Commission IV of the Bali House of Representatives, Nyoman Parta, said that becoming an entrepreneur is the solution to reduce unemployment of intellectuals. However, the problem is that the college graduates have the mentality that is not willing to work hard and hard to get started.

Vice Chairman of the Bali House of Representatives, Nyoman Sugawa Korry, said that it is important to be echoed the entrepreneur movement for young generation in Bali. “It can be started with the movement in the whole universities in Bali facilitated by the provincial government of Bali,” he said.

There are also graduates of primary school downwards of 13,945 people, junior high school (30,215 people), high school (100,870 people) and vocational school (184,077 people).

“I think universities need to make a revitalization or adjustment to open the departments that are really needed by job markets. Do not open the unabsorbed department,” he said on Monday (Jan. 2). (kmb32)

London museum bids farewell to Dippy the dinosaur

LONDON - Britain’s Natural History Museum bids farewell to its most famous exhibit, Dippy the diplodocus, on Wednesday after almost four decades of greeting visitors before being dismantled ahead of a national tour.

For 35 years, the huge skeleton

cast, 4.25 metres (14 ft) high and 21 metres long, has been the first sight visitors see when they enter the London museum’s main entrance.

On Thursday, a team begins the three-week process of dismantling Dippy before conservators spend 12 months preparing the delicate

plaster-of-Paris cast for the journey around Britain where it will go on show at eight locations from 2018 until 2020.

From the end of 2020, a bronze cast of Dippy will then go on display outside the museum.

Scottish-born American indus-

trialist Andrew Carnegie originally presented the 292-bone cast to the museum in 1905, and it has held its prominent position in the main entrance hall since 1979.

Dippy will be replaced by a 25.2 metre real skeleton of a blue whale as part of a major overhaul.

Diplodocus was first described as a new type of dinosaur in 1878

by Professor Othniel C. Marsh at Yale University. The herbivore species lived sometime between 156 and 145 million years ago and belongs to a group called sauropods, meaning ‘lizard feet’. (rtr)

Cruise terminal at Benoa must have positive impact on Denpasar

DENPASAR - Assessment on the construction of a cruise terminal at Benoa Harbor got a response from the ranks of the Denpasar House of Representatives. Parliament appreciates to normalization of Rangda River

DENPASAR - The plan to arrange and normalize Rangda River by the Denpasar Public Works Agency received positive response from the ranks of the local parliament. The arrangement will have significant impact on the threat of puddles that may occur in the area of Sidakarya and Sesetan when it rains. Therefore, the parliament suggested the plan can be worked on immediately.

This was confirmed by a member of Commission III of the Denpasar House of Representatives I Wayan Suadi Putra and a member of the Commission I I Made Setiadi at their office on Wednesday (Jan. 4). Price of chili skyrockets

DENPASAR - The skyrocketing price of chili reaching IDR 200,000 per kg makes people only buy a bit like a half kilogram, a quarter kilogram and some people even buy in some pieces.

A buyer was seen just purchasing chili as much as IDR 2,000 that got four pieces of cayenne pepper at one of the merchants named Eka. Most people assumed that cayenne pepper is more spicy and tastes better than other chilies. “Yes ... it is just to meet the desire,” she said while leaving during the implementation of low-cost market at Kreneng market held by TPID Bali.

Tunik, another buyer, said that such price hike of chili made her somewhat difficult to carry out her business that also uses chili. She just bought a half kilogram of chili. She hoped that the chili price could go down.

As is known, the cayenne pepper in Bali is sold for IDR 100,000-IDR110,000, small green chili for IDR 60,000, curly red chili for IDR 40,000 and large red chili for IDR 16,000.

With the rising price of chili, Mrs. Eka admitted that merchants experienced declining turnover. “In the past, people preferred to purchase cayenne pepper. However, today more and more people purchase curly red chili,” she said.

The decline in turnover of up to 50 percent happened because people purchased a half kilogram or a quarter or less than this amount. Eka who took chili from the third hand admitted that the price hike began to happen since the week before the New Year.

Azka Subhan, Deputy Chief Representative Officer of Bank Indonesia (BI) for Bali Region, said that his institution had conducted a survey to Petang (Badung), Baturiti and Antapan (Tabanan) and Bangli. “There are 50 hectares of land cultivated by farmer group and being harvested. Farmers enjoy somewhat good results because the price at the farmer level reaches IDR 75.000 per kg,” he said.

Every harvest, the land area of 0.60 hectare can produce at least 150 kg. The chili can be harvested once a week, up to a maximum of 13 times of harvest. By and large, after that the harvest is not good.

Considering the existing land area, Bali should be surplus of chili commodity. However, due to the influence of weather, the price of pepper soared. According to survey conducted by BI, four factors caused the price of pepper to increase, namely when the pepper plant is blooming, the flowers fall out due to the effect of rainfall; strong winds make the pepper plants uprooted; and anthracnose disease attacks chili that causes chili to rot; and the extreme climate makes fruit flies attack the chilies when remaining in small size.

Considering the price hike is so dramatic, there is indeed a reasonable price for chili. However, he was reluctant to mention because it is not his domain. Clearly the reasonable price benefits farmers, and communities are able to buy in the range of IDR 20,000 to IDR 100,000. He was optimistic that the skyrocketing price will not last long and is predictable to happen until the end of January. “But before that time, it seems to have gone down,” he added. (kmb42)

TOURISM villages in Buleleng will become more varied this year. District government planned the addition of five new tourism villages that respectively offers its own advantages, particularly in terms of attractions.

The desire of Buleleng district to develop tourism sector does not only rely on the existing attractions. This year, six villages, namely the Les, Sekumpul, Bengkala, Banjar, Sidatapa and Pedawa will also be set into tourism villages. With this, the tourist attractions in Buleleng will be more varied. “This year tourism village amounts to sixteen,” said the Head of the Buleleng Tourism Agency, I Nyoman Sutrisna, recently.

According to him, one of the criteria to determine the tourism village is the existence of attractions that can be offered to travelers. More fundamentally, it is supported by facilities and

infrastructure. “Each tourism village has distinctive features,” he said.

To support the establishment of tourism village, promotional measures will soon be done. Other than district government, the promotion will also be carried out by regional promotion board established some time ago. The human resources of it will also be fostered in a sustainable manner, so that it will be able to realize the concept of sapta pesona or seven charms. “Later on, this board will cooperate with travel agencies. The whole objects will be promoted,” he said.

Esteban Santiago, 26, was charged with an act of violence at an international airport resulting in death — which carries a maximum punishment of execution — and weapons charges.

Santiago told investigators that he planned the attack, buying a oneway ticket to the Fort Lauderdale airport, a federal complaint said.

Authorities don’t know why he chose his target and have not ruled out terrorism.

“Today’s charges represent the gravity of the situation and reflect the commitment of federal, state and local law enforcement personnel to continually protect the community and prosecute those who target our residents and visitors,” U.S Attorney Wifredo Ferrer said.

Authorities said during a news conference that they had interviewed roughly 175 people, including a lengthy interrogation with a cooperative Santiago, who is a former National Guard soldier from Alaska. Flights had resumed at the Fort Lauderdale airport after the bloodshed, though the terminal where the shooting happened remained closed.

FBI Agent George Piro said Santiago spoke to investigators for several hours after he opened fire

with a 9mm semi-automatic handgun that he appears to have legally checked on a flight from Alaska.

“Indications are that he came here to carry out this horrific attack,” Piro said. “We have not identified any triggers that would have caused this attack. We’re pursuing all angles on what prompted him to carry out this horrific attack.”

Investigators are combing through social media and other information to determine Santiago’s motive, and it’s too early to say whether terrorism played a role, Piro said. In November, Santiago had walked into an FBI field office in Alaska saying the U.S. government was controlling his mind and forcing him to watch Islamic State group videos, authorities said.

“He was a walk-in complaint.

This is something that happens at FBI offices around the country every day,” FBI agent Marlin Ritzman said.

Santiago had a loaded magazine on him, but had left a gun in his vehicle, along with his newborn child, authorities said. Officers seized the weapon and local officers took him to get a mental health evaluation.

His girlfriend picked up the child.

Related to the marine accident, Ketut Suastika explained that his office had come and carried out crime scene investigation, noted the identity of victim and witnesses, evacuated, took victim’s fingerprint and made external post mortem report to his leadership. “The victim is alleged to have been fatigue while snorkeling so that he drank plenty

of water and died,” he explained.

Ketut Suastika said that the witness who is also the victim’s mother has made an affidavit that the family will not do prosecutions and not perform an autopsy.

Victim’s mother believed that the victim’s death purely happened due to marine accident and nothing is done deliberately by someone.

U.S. Attorney Karen Loeffler said Santiago would have been able to legally possess a gun because he had not been judged mentally ill, which is a higher standard than having an evaluation.

Santiago had not been placed on the U.S. no-fly list and appears to have acted alone, authorities said.

The attack sent panicked witnesses running out of the terminal and spilling onto the tarmac, baggage in hand. Others hid in bathroom stalls or crouched behind cars or anything else they could find as police and paramedics rushed in to help the wounded and establish whether there were any other gunmen.

BEIRUT - A fuel truck exploded in the busy centre of a rebel-held town near Syria’s border with Turkey on Saturday, killing dozens of people and wounding dozens more, several sources said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 48 people, mostly civilians, were killed when the tanker blew up in front of a courthouse in the northern Syrian town of Azaz.

Around 14 of the dead were rebel fighters or courthouse guards, it said.

Dozens more had severe injuries, said the Observatory, which monitors the violence in the country.

In unsourced comments, Turkey’s privately owned Dogan news agency said a car bomb planted

by Islamic State was responsible.

There was no immediate claim of

responsibility from the militant group.

Turkey’s state-run Anadolu news agency cited a doctor in Azaz as saying at least 60 people had been killed and more than 50 wounded.

An Azaz resident who went to the local hospital told Reuters he had counted around 30 bodies laid out.

Syria’s nearly six-year war has created a patchwork of areas of control across the country, and Azaz is a major stronghold of the Turkish-backed Free Syrian Army (FSA).

The FSA is an alliance of moderate rebel groups whose fighters have, with Turkish military support, pushed Islamic State militants out of the border area.

Saturday’s explosion was heard

across the border in the Turkish town of Kilis, Dogan said.

Anadolu said 23 wounded people had been taken by ambulance to Kilis hospital, one of whom subsequently died.

Southeast of Azaz, Turkish forces have launched an offensive to take back the Islamic State-held town of al-Bab. In a round-up of its military operations in support of rebels in northern Syria, the Turkish military said that on Friday 21 Islamic State militants had been killed in clashes.

Investors all ears as Trump set to break silence

LONDON - U.S. and Chinese data and an expected news conference by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump in the coming week may shed some light on the state of the world’s two biggest economies - and the outlook for relations between them.

Trump, who takes office on Jan. 20, has said he will hold a news conference on Wednesday. It will be his first since winning the November election, although he has been outspoken on Twitter.

Investors will welcome any insights he may give on his policies regarding China as well as the domestic economy.

“This occasion could be an opportunity for Trump to highlight key priorities, with markets especially alert to details regarding tax reform, infrastructure spending plans and his China trade stance,” Standard Chartered said in a weekly note to investors.

Some analysts are concerned about the broad economic and political impacts of Trump’s relations with the rest of the world.

“Trump’s plans for trade and foreign policy in particular are fraught with considerable threats to the real economy,” Commerzbank currency strategist Thu Lan Nguyen wrote, suggesting a trade war with China or Mexico may do the U.S. economy more harm than good.

On the U.S. domestic front, ex-

pectations of heavy spending under Trump to create jobs in the Rust Belt states that swung the election his way have helped lift consumer sentiment to multi-year highs and driven up Treasury yields in a burst of “Trumpflation.”

One gauge of that sentiment will be U.S. retail sales data for December due on Friday. They are expected to show a 0.7 percent rise from the previous month, according to a Reuters poll of economists.

Another will be the University of Michigan consumer sentiment index, also out on Friday, which economists polled by Reuters expect to come in at 98.5, the highest reading since early 2004.

As 2017 progresses, some economists see U.S. wage growth and tax cuts outweighing the impact of higher interest rates and oil prices to keep shoppers driving the economy forward.

“Higher interest rates and rising gasoline prices will be headwinds for the consumer sector, but solid labor income and the prospects for personal tax cuts will eventually support decent consumption

growth,” Credit Suisse said in a weekly report.

CHINA BURNING DOLLARS In a reflection of the prolonged weakness of China’s yuan, data on Saturday showed Beijing’s forex reserves dwindled to just above $3 trillion in December - the lowest level in nearly six years.

While the yuan has soared in recent days, helping create a liquidity squeeze in Hong Kong, a Reuters poll showed it is expected to slide at least 4 percent more this year, hurt by fiscal stimulus and faster interest rate hikes in the United States.

“It remains to be seen whether tightening yuan liquidity conditions in Hong Kong and reports of capital controls being introduced will be sufficient to halt the slide” in the yuan, analysts at Investec said in a weekly note to clients.

Another fear for investors may be whether the prolonged slide of the yuan sets off a vicious cycle of more outflows, currency depreciation and rising inflation, on which China issues December data on Tuesday.

Adding to China’s problems, Trump has vowed repeatedly to label Beijing a currency manipulator, a move that would heighten tensions between the two major trading nations.

ACCRA - Ghana’s new President Nana Akufo-Addo pledged to cut taxes to boost the economy at his swearing in ceremony on Saturday, whilst also promising to protect the public purse by getting value for money on services.

Akufo-Addo, 72, defeated incumbent John Dramani Mahama in peaceful elections a month ago, a rare peaceful transfer of power in a region plagued by political crises.

The major cocoa and gold exporter is half-way through a three-year aid programme with the International Monetary Fund to fix an economy dogged by high public debt and inflation.

It is not clear how the new president will be able to cut taxes and still stick to an IMF austerity plan that was a condition of a $918 million bailout. “We will reduce taxes to recover the momentum of our econ-

omy,” said Akufo-Addo, wrapped in a traditional kaleidoscopic “kente” robe. “Ghana is open for business again.”

At the venue for the inauguration in Black Star Square, thousands of Ghanaians also draped in traditional kente garments clapped. Outside the perimeters, revellers drummed and danced.

Akufo-Addo suggested government money would be spent wisely.

“I shall protect the public purse by insisting on value for money,” he said. “Public service is just that: service, and (is) not be seen as an opportunity for making money.”

Ghana expects growth will return to above eight percent in 2017 as new oil and gas fields from Tullow and ENI come on tap.

Akufo-Addo served as foreign minister and attorney general in the NPP government that ruled between 2001 and 2009. He twice previously

lost close battles for the presidency.

He is the son of a former chief justice and non-executive president of Ghana. During his campaign, he had accused the Mahama administration of corruption and incompetence, charges the outgoing president denied. Mahama attended the ceremony.

It was also attended by dozens of African leaders and other international dignitaries, including Chadian President Idris Deby, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia and former UN chief Kofi Annan.

Ghanaians are proud of having a stable democracy and acutely aware that it is a rarity in turbulent region.

Akufo-Addo’s New Patriotic Party also won a majority of 169 seats in Parliament while the former ruling National Democratic Congress now has 106 seats.(rtr)

Ivory Coast defence minister, others freed by mutinying soldiers

BOUAKE - Rogue soldiers allowed Ivory Coast’s defence minister and dozens of others to leave a house where they had been trapped on Saturday when some mutineers appeared to reject aspects of a deal intended to end a two-day revolt, a Reuters witness said.

It remained unclear, however, whether the disgruntled soldiers - most of them former rebel fighters now integrated into the army - would honour the agreement announced by President Alassane Ouattara just hours earlier.

The mutiny began early on Friday when the soldiers seized Bouake, Ivory Coast’s second largest city. Over the next two days, soldiers at military camps in cities and towns across the country, including the commercial capital Abidjan, joined the mutiny.

Following talks between a government delegation headed by Defence Minister Alain-Richard Donwahi and representatives of the mutineers, Ouattara announced he had agreed to some of the soldiers’ grievances but chastised them for sparking the unrest.

“I would like to say that this manner of making demands is not appropriate. It tarnishes the image of our country after all our efforts to revive the economy,” he said in a declaration that was broadcast on stateowned television.

A mutineer close to the negotiations said the soldiers were satisfied with the deal, which would address

demands for bonus payments and improve living conditions, and said they were preparing to return to barracks.

But some of the renegade troops later opened fire outside the house in Bouake where the talks had taken place, trapping Donwahi, local officials, journalists and the mutineers’ own negotiators inside.

They were only allowed to leave several hours later.

“We are all out. The soldiers stepped aside and allowed us out. The minister took off from the airport,” said a Reuters reporter who had also been trapped inside the house.

A defence ministry statement later denied Donwahi had been held by the soldiers.

“The minister was in no way threatened by his soldiers but rather continued to carry out the talks,” the statement read.

Ivory Coast - French-speaking West Africa’s largest economy and the world’s leading cocoa producer - has emerged from a 2002-2011 political crisis as one of the continent’s rising economic stars.

But years of conflict and a failure to reform its army, thrown together from a patchwork of former rebel fighters and government soldiers, have left it with an unruly force hobbled by internal divisions.

The revolt comes two years after hundreds of soldiers barricaded roads in cities across Ivory Coast demanding back pay in a near identical uprising. (rtr)

Eastern United States digs out from big snowstorm, braces for cold

VIRGINIA - The eastern United States began digging out on Saturday from a massive storm that dumped heavy snow from Georgia to Massachusetts, knocking out power for thousands of people and causing hundreds of car crashes, officials said as they warned of more cold weather ahead.

The snowstorm also caused flight delays and cancellations across the country.

The snow began falling heavily on Friday in parts of Georgia, North and South Carolina and Virginia and lasted until mid-day on Saturday, meteorologist Andrew Orrison of the Weather Prediction Center said by phone.

Some of the heaviest snowfall, accumulating to about a foot (30 cm), was in southeast Virginia around Williamsburg and in northern North Carolina, Orrison said.

Parts of northern Georgia had over six inches (15 cm) of snow, he said.

Georgia Governor Nathan Deal said in a statement that thousands of power outages were reported and city officials in the Atlanta area asked residents to check on elderly people who might lack electricity.

At least one warming center in Atlanta, where people could get out of the cold, was filled to capacity, the city said on its Twitter page.

Some interstate highways were impassable overnight going into Saturday and multiple traffic col-

lisions had been reported, Deal’s statement said.

The driver of a sport utility vehicle hit a patch of ice on Interstate 75 in Monroe County, Georgia, careened off the roadway, struck a tree and was killed, the county Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper on social media said the state had more than 700 accidents but no fatalities - and about 20,000 power outages. The snowstorm prompted Cooper, a Democrat, to postpone his inauguration ceremony planned for Saturday.

“This was actually, for the season, the most significant winter storm the Southeast has had,” Orrison said.

In Connecticut, about 20 cars and a tanker truck were mangled in a pile-up crash in the snow on Interstate 91 in Middletown, State Police said on Twitter.

At least one vehicle could be seen wedged under the tanker, in video posted online by the police agency. It added that no serious injuries resulted from the pile-up.

More than a foot of snow fell in parts of New England, Orrison said.

That region had also seen heavy snow last month.

Southeast Sulawesi records 31% increase in exports

KENDARI - Southeast Sulawesi has recorded a 30 percent rise in exports in 2016 as compared to the previous year, Akabul Kijo, the provincial head of Marine and Fisheries, stated.

“Based on the data from fish quarantine, quality control, and safety of the fishery products station of Kendari City, the total export value of Sulawesi Tenggaras fish and fishery products reached Rp53.1 billion in 2016,” Kijo stated here on Saturday (Jan. 7).

Octopus and shrimp continued to dominate export commodities among certified fishery products.

“Some 81 shipments, weighing 1277.46 tons of fishery products, worth Rp41.5 billion, were exported,” he revealed.

The main export destinations were the US, Japan, Croatia, Vietnam, Thailand, China, and South Korea.

Moreover, other exports of 77 shipments were dominated by grouper and crab, worth Rp8.6 billion, he noted.

“The total volume of fishery products exported to Hong Kong, Singapore, and Japan reached 3,298 kilograms, while the exports of octopus to Japan and the US were worth Rp2.8 billion,” he remarked.

Southeast Sulawesi has huge potential for fisheries, as it is surrounded by the Bone Bay Sea, Banda Sea, and Flores Sea. “Of the total 17 districts and municipalities of Southeast Sulawesi, only East Kolaka District has no coastline,” he pointed out.

He further added that nine districts and municipalities in Southeast Sulawesi located in the archipelago areas are Konawe Island, Wakatobi, North Buton, Muna, West Muna, Buton, South Buton, Central Buton, and Baubau apart from areas of Bombana District.

“The government continues to encourage fishermen to increase production, both of capture fisheries and aquaculture,” he said.

Moreover, Kijo noted that the marine waters of Southeast Sulawesi hold huge potential for the welfare of the local people, if it is managed properly and sustainably, since the marine areas of the province are rich in various species of fish and diverse biota of high economic value. (ant)

BOLIVIA - The sixth stage of the Dakar Rally was cancelled on Saturday due to extreme weather conditions in Bolivia, with competitors heading for a rest day in La Paz before resuming the race on Monday.

Draxler marks PSG debut with a goal in 7-0 French Cup win

Rooney record in United rout, Leicester win at Everton LONDON - Wayne Rooney left his footprint on FA Cup thirdround day with the first goal in holders Manchester United’s 4-0 rout of Championship side Reading on Saturday to draw level with Bobby Charlton as the club’s record scorer.

His seventh-minute effort took his United tally to 249 since joining the 12-times Cup winners in 2004, but Rooney failed to surpass Charlton’s long-standing mark as Anthony Martial and two late goals from Marcus Rashford completed United’s comfortable victory at Old Trafford.

BARCELONA - Real Madrid equalled a Spanish record of 39 games unbeaten in all competitions by crushing struggling Granada 5-0 on Saturday to go four points clear at the top of La Liga. Antoine Griezmann scored his first league goal in more than three months as Atletico Madrid won 2-0 at Eibar, while Sevilla beat Real Sociedad 4-0 away thanks to a hat-trick from Wissam Ben Yedder.

Real lead with 40 points and Sevilla are second with 36, two more than Barcelona who visit Villarreal on Sunday. Atletico’s win took them fourth with 31. Spain midfielder Isco set Real on their way to an easy victory by latching on to a pass from Karim Benzema and squeezing the ball underneath Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa in the 12th minute.

goal in the 20th minute after Ochoa failed to hold a shot from the lively Luka Modric and top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo struck his 11th league goal of the season by nodding in a cross from Marcelo. Tonelli takes advantage of his chance with Napoli

ROME — After sitting on the bench all season, Lorenzo Tonelli finally got a chance to play for Napoli on Saturday and he made quite an impact. The center back celebrated his season debut by scoring the winner five minutes into stoppage time as Napoli came back from a goal down to beat 10-man Sampdoria 2-1 in Serie A. With Kalidou Koulibaly and Faouzi Ghoulam away at the African Cup of Nations, Tonelli played from the start and was ready when teammate Ivan Strinic set him up in the center of the area in the final seconds.

Tonelli met Strinic’s pass with a rising shot that left a crowd of Sampdoria defenders helpless inside the box.

“I had to get over some physical problems but I was lucky to find myself ready,” Tonelli said. “This is a great group and they helped me a lot. ... Napoli showed tonight that it doesn’t give up.”

Tonelli had a breakthrough season at Empoli under current Napoli coach Maurizio Sarri in 2014-15 then followed Sarri to Napoli after last season. Sampdoria led on the halfhour mark with an own goal from Elseid Hysaj.

Patrick Schick got by Vlad Chiriche near the right sideline and his cross was redirected in by Hysaj with Fabio Quagliarella waiting by the far post. Napoli hardly threatened in the first half but the Partenopei came to life after the break.

Ivory Coast defence minister, others freed by mutinying soldiers

BOUAKE - Rogue soldiers allowed Ivory Coast’s defence minister and dozens of others to leave a house where they had been trapped on Saturday when some mutineers appeared to reject aspects of a deal intended to end a two-day revolt, a Reuters witness said.

It remained unclear, however, whether the disgruntled soldiers - most of them former rebel fighters now integrated into the army - would honour the agreement announced by President Alassane Ouattara just hours earlier.

The mutiny began early on Friday when the soldiers seized Bouake, Ivory Coast’s second largest city. Over the next two days, soldiers at military camps in cities and towns across the country, including the commercial capital Abidjan, joined the mutiny.

Following talks between a government delegation headed by Defence Minister Alain-Richard Donwahi and representatives of the mutineers, Ouattara announced he had agreed to some of the soldiers’ grievances but chastised them for sparking the unrest.

“I would like to say that this manner of making demands is not appropriate. It tarnishes the image of our country after all our efforts to revive the economy,” he said in a declaration that was broadcast on stateowned television.

A mutineer close to the negotiations said the soldiers were satisfied with the deal, which would address

demands for bonus payments and improve living conditions, and said they were preparing to return to barracks.

But some of the renegade troops later opened fire outside the house in Bouake where the talks had taken place, trapping Donwahi, local officials, journalists and the mutineers’ own negotiators inside.

They were only allowed to leave several hours later.

“We are all out. The soldiers stepped aside and allowed us out. The minister took off from the airport,” said a Reuters reporter who had also been trapped inside the house.

A defence ministry statement later denied Donwahi had been held by the soldiers.

“The minister was in no way threatened by his soldiers but rather continued to carry out the talks,” the statement read.

Ivory Coast - French-speaking West Africa’s largest economy and the world’s leading cocoa producer - has emerged from a 2002-2011 political crisis as one of the continent’s rising economic stars.

But years of conflict and a failure to reform its army, thrown together from a patchwork of former rebel fighters and government soldiers, have left it with an unruly force hobbled by internal divisions.

The revolt comes two years after hundreds of soldiers barricaded roads in cities across Ivory Coast demanding back pay in a near identical uprising. (rtr)

Eastern United States digs out from big snowstorm, braces for cold

VIRGINIA - The eastern United States began digging out on Saturday from a massive storm that dumped heavy snow from Georgia to Massachusetts, knocking out power for thousands of people and causing hundreds of car crashes, officials said as they warned of more cold weather ahead.

The snowstorm also caused flight delays and cancellations across the country.

The snow began falling heavily on Friday in parts of Georgia, North and South Carolina and Virginia and lasted until mid-day on Saturday, meteorologist Andrew Orrison of the Weather Prediction Center said by phone.

Some of the heaviest snowfall, accumulating to about a foot (30 cm), was in southeast Virginia around Williamsburg and in northern North Carolina, Orrison said.

Parts of northern Georgia had over six inches (15 cm) of snow, he said.

Georgia Governor Nathan Deal said in a statement that thousands of power outages were reported and city officials in the Atlanta area asked residents to check on elderly people who might lack electricity.

At least one warming center in Atlanta, where people could get out of the cold, was filled to capacity, the city said on its Twitter page.

Some interstate highways were impassable overnight going into Saturday and multiple traffic col-

lisions had been reported, Deal’s statement said.

The driver of a sport utility vehicle hit a patch of ice on Interstate 75 in Monroe County, Georgia, careened off the roadway, struck a tree and was killed, the county Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper on social media said the state had more than 700 accidents but no fatalities - and about 20,000 power outages. The snowstorm prompted Cooper, a Democrat, to postpone his inauguration ceremony planned for Saturday.

“This was actually, for the season, the most significant winter storm the Southeast has had,” Orrison said.

In Connecticut, about 20 cars and a tanker truck were mangled in a pile-up crash in the snow on Interstate 91 in Middletown, State Police said on Twitter.

At least one vehicle could be seen wedged under the tanker, in video posted online by the police agency. It added that no serious injuries resulted from the pile-up.

More than a foot of snow fell in parts of New England, Orrison said.

That region had also seen heavy snow last month.

Southeast Sulawesi records 31% increase in exports

KENDARI - Southeast Sulawesi has recorded a 30 percent rise in exports in 2016 as compared to the previous year, Akabul Kijo, the provincial head of Marine and Fisheries, stated.

“Based on the data from fish quarantine, quality control, and safety of the fishery products station of Kendari City, the total export value of Sulawesi Tenggaras fish and fishery products reached Rp53.1 billion in 2016,” Kijo stated here on Saturday (Jan. 7).

Octopus and shrimp continued to dominate export commodities among certified fishery products.

“Some 81 shipments, weighing 1277.46 tons of fishery products, worth Rp41.5 billion, were exported,” he revealed.

The main export destinations were the US, Japan, Croatia, Vietnam, Thailand, China, and South Korea.

Moreover, other exports of 77 shipments were dominated by grouper and crab, worth Rp8.6 billion, he noted.

“The total volume of fishery products exported to Hong Kong, Singapore, and Japan reached 3,298 kilograms, while the exports of octopus to Japan and the US were worth Rp2.8 billion,” he remarked.

Southeast Sulawesi has huge potential for fisheries, as it is surrounded by the Bone Bay Sea, Banda Sea, and Flores Sea. “Of the total 17 districts and municipalities of Southeast Sulawesi, only East Kolaka District has no coastline,” he pointed out.

He further added that nine districts and municipalities in Southeast Sulawesi located in the archipelago areas are Konawe Island, Wakatobi, North Buton, Muna, West Muna, Buton, South Buton, Central Buton, and Baubau apart from areas of Bombana District.

“The government continues to encourage fishermen to increase production, both of capture fisheries and aquaculture,” he said.

Moreover, Kijo noted that the marine waters of Southeast Sulawesi hold huge potential for the welfare of the local people, if it is managed properly and sustainably, since the marine areas of the province are rich in various species of fish and diverse biota of high economic value. (ant)

Investors all ears as Trump set to break silence

LONDON - U.S. and Chinese data and an expected news conference by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump in the coming week may shed some light on the state of the world’s two biggest economies - and the outlook for relations between them.

Trump, who takes office on Jan. 20, has said he will hold a news conference on Wednesday. It will be his first since winning the November election, although he has been outspoken on Twitter.

Investors will welcome any insights he may give on his policies regarding China as well as the domestic economy.

“This occasion could be an opportunity for Trump to highlight key priorities, with markets especially alert to details regarding tax reform, infrastructure spending plans and his China trade stance,” Standard Chartered said in a weekly note to investors.

Some analysts are concerned about the broad economic and political impacts of Trump’s relations with the rest of the world.

“Trump’s plans for trade and foreign policy in particular are fraught with considerable threats to the real economy,” Commerzbank currency strategist Thu Lan Nguyen wrote, suggesting a trade war with China or Mexico may do the U.S. economy more harm than good.

On the U.S. domestic front, ex-

pectations of heavy spending under Trump to create jobs in the Rust Belt states that swung the election his way have helped lift consumer sentiment to multi-year highs and driven up Treasury yields in a burst of “Trumpflation.”

One gauge of that sentiment will be U.S. retail sales data for December due on Friday. They are expected to show a 0.7 percent rise from the previous month, according to a Reuters poll of economists.

Another will be the University of Michigan consumer sentiment index, also out on Friday, which economists polled by Reuters expect to come in at 98.5, the highest reading since early 2004.

As 2017 progresses, some economists see U.S. wage growth and tax cuts outweighing the impact of higher interest rates and oil prices to keep shoppers driving the economy forward.

“Higher interest rates and rising gasoline prices will be headwinds for the consumer sector, but solid labor income and the prospects for personal tax cuts will eventually support decent consumption

growth,” Credit Suisse said in a weekly report.

CHINA BURNING DOLLARS In a reflection of the prolonged weakness of China’s yuan, data on Saturday showed Beijing’s forex reserves dwindled to just above $3 trillion in December - the lowest level in nearly six years.

While the yuan has soared in recent days, helping create a liquidity squeeze in Hong Kong, a Reuters poll showed it is expected to slide at least 4 percent more this year, hurt by fiscal stimulus and faster interest rate hikes in the United States.

“It remains to be seen whether tightening yuan liquidity conditions in Hong Kong and reports of capital controls being introduced will be sufficient to halt the slide” in the yuan, analysts at Investec said in a weekly note to clients.

Another fear for investors may be whether the prolonged slide of the yuan sets off a vicious cycle of more outflows, currency depreciation and rising inflation, on which China issues December data on Tuesday.

Adding to China’s problems, Trump has vowed repeatedly to label Beijing a currency manipulator, a move that would heighten tensions between the two major trading nations.

“We tend to the view that the manufacturing sector probably expanded only very modestly in Q4.

ACCRA - Ghana’s new President Nana Akufo-Addo pledged to cut taxes to boost the economy at his swearing in ceremony on Saturday, whilst also promising to protect the public purse by getting value for money on services.

Akufo-Addo, 72, defeated incumbent John Dramani Mahama in peaceful elections a month ago, a rare peaceful transfer of power in a region plagued by political crises.

The major cocoa and gold exporter is half-way through a three-year aid programme with the International Monetary Fund to fix an economy dogged by high public debt and inflation.

It is not clear how the new president will be able to cut taxes and still stick to an IMF austerity plan that was a condition of a $918 million bailout. “We will reduce taxes to recover the momentum of our econ-

omy,” said Akufo-Addo, wrapped in a traditional kaleidoscopic “kente” robe. “Ghana is open for business again.”

At the venue for the inauguration in Black Star Square, thousands of Ghanaians also draped in traditional kente garments clapped. Outside the perimeters, revellers drummed and danced.

Akufo-Addo suggested government money would be spent wisely.

“I shall protect the public purse by insisting on value for money,” he said. “Public service is just that: service, and (is) not be seen as an opportunity for making money.”

Ghana expects growth will return to above eight percent in 2017 as new oil and gas fields from Tullow and ENI come on tap.

Akufo-Addo served as foreign minister and attorney general in the NPP government that ruled between 2001 and 2009. He twice previously

lost close battles for the presidency.

He is the son of a former chief justice and non-executive president of Ghana. During his campaign, he had accused the Mahama administration of corruption and incompetence, charges the outgoing president denied. Mahama attended the ceremony.

It was also attended by dozens of African leaders and other international dignitaries, including Chadian President Idris Deby, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia and former UN chief Kofi Annan.

Ghanaians are proud of having a stable democracy and acutely aware that it is a rarity in turbulent region.

Price of chili skyrockets

DENPASAR - The skyrocketing price of chili reaching IDR 200,000 per kg makes people only buy a bit like a half kilogram, a quarter kilogram and some people even buy in some pieces.

A buyer was seen just purchasing chili as much as IDR 2,000 that got four pieces of cayenne pepper at one of the merchants named Eka. Most people assumed that cayenne pepper is more spicy and tastes better than other chilies. “Yes ... it is just to meet the desire,” she said while leaving during the implementation of low-cost market at Kreneng market held by TPID Bali.

Tunik, another buyer, said that such price hike of chili made her somewhat difficult to carry out her business that also uses chili. She just bought a half kilogram of chili. She hoped that the chili price could go down.

As is known, the cayenne pepper in Bali is sold for IDR 100,000-IDR110,000, small green chili for IDR 60,000, curly red chili for IDR 40,000 and large red chili for IDR 16,000.

With the rising price of chili, Mrs. Eka admitted that merchants experienced declining turnover. “In the past, people preferred to purchase cayenne pepper. However, today more and more people purchase curly red chili,” she said.

The decline in turnover of up to 50 percent happened because people purchased a half kilogram or a quarter or less than this amount. Eka who took chili from the third hand admitted that the price hike began to happen since the week before the New Year.

Azka Subhan, Deputy Chief Representative Officer of Bank Indonesia (BI) for Bali Region, said that his institution had conducted a survey to Petang (Badung), Baturiti and Antapan (Tabanan) and Bangli. “There are 50 hectares of land cultivated by farmer group and being harvested. Farmers enjoy somewhat good results because the price at the farmer level reaches IDR 75.000 per kg,” he said.

Every harvest, the land area of 0.60 hectare can produce at least 150 kg. The chili can be harvested once a week, up to a maximum of 13 times of harvest. By and large, after that the harvest is not good.

Considering the existing land area, Bali should be surplus of chili commodity. However, due to the influence of weather, the price of pepper soared. According to survey conducted by BI, four factors caused the price of pepper to increase, namely when the pepper plant is blooming, the flowers fall out due to the effect of rainfall; strong winds make the pepper plants uprooted; and anthracnose disease attacks chili that causes chili to rot; and the extreme climate makes fruit flies attack the chilies when remaining in small size.

Considering the price hike is so dramatic, there is indeed a reasonable price for chili. However, he was reluctant to mention because it is not his domain. Clearly the reasonable price benefits farmers, and communities are able to buy in the range of IDR 20,000 to IDR 100,000. This year, six villages, namely the Les, Sekumpul, Bengkala, Banjar, Sidatapa and Pedawa will also be set into tourism villages. With this, the tourist attractions in Buleleng will be more varied. “This year tourism village amounts to sixteen,” said the Head of the Buleleng Tourism Agency, I Nyoman Sutrisna, recently.

According to him, one of the criteria to determine the tourism village is the existence of attractions that can be offered to travelers. More fundamentally, it is supported by facilities and

infrastructure. “Each tourism village has distinctive features,” he said.

To support the establishment of tourism village, promotional measures will soon be done. Esteban Santiago, 26, was charged with an act of violence at an international airport resulting in death — which carries a maximum punishment of execution — and weapons charges.

Santiago told investigators that he planned the attack, buying a oneway ticket to the Fort Lauderdale airport, a federal complaint said.

Authorities don’t know why he chose his target and have not ruled out terrorism.

“Today’s charges represent the gravity of the situation and reflect the commitment of federal, state and local law enforcement personnel to continually protect the community and prosecute those who target our residents and visitors,” U.S Attorney Wifredo Ferrer said.

Authorities said during a news conference that they had interviewed roughly 175 people, including a lengthy interrogation with a cooperative Santiago, who is a former National Guard soldier from Alaska. Flights had resumed at the Fort Lauderdale airport after the bloodshed, though the terminal where the shooting happened remained closed.

with a 9mm semi-automatic handgun that he appears to have legally checked on a flight from Alaska.

“Indications are that he came here to carry out this horrific attack,” Piro said. “We have not identified any triggers that would have caused this attack. We’re pursuing all angles on what prompted him to carry out this horrific attack.”

Investigators are combing through social media and other information to determine Santiago’s motive, and it’s too early to say whether terrorism played a role, Piro said. BEIRUT - A fuel truck exploded in the busy centre of a rebel-held town near Syria’s border with Turkey on Saturday, killing dozens of people and wounding dozens more, several sources said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 48 people, mostly civilians, were killed when the tanker blew up in front of a courthouse in the northern Syrian town of Azaz.

Around 14 of the dead were rebel fighters or courthouse guards, it said.

Dozens more had severe injuries, said the Observatory, which monitors the violence in the country.

In unsourced comments, Turkey’s privately owned Dogan news agency said a car bomb planted

by Islamic State was responsible.

There was no immediate claim of

responsibility from the militant group.

Turkey’s state-run Anadolu news agency cited a doctor in Azaz as saying at least 60 people had been killed and more than 50 wounded.

An Azaz resident who went to the local hospital told Reuters he had counted around 30 bodies laid out.

Syria’s nearly six-year war has created a patchwork of areas of control across the country, and Azaz is a major stronghold of the Turkish-backed Free Syrian Army (FSA).

The FSA is an alliance of moderate rebel groups whose fighters have, with Turkish military support, pushed Islamic State militants out of the border area.

London museum bids farewell to Dippy the dinosaur

LONDON - Britain’s Natural History Museum bids farewell to its most famous exhibit, Dippy the diplodocus, on Wednesday after almost four decades of greeting visitors before being dismantled ahead of a national tour.

For 35 years, the huge skeleton

cast, 4.25 metres (14 ft) high and 21 metres long, has been the first sight visitors see when they enter the London museum’s main entrance.

On Thursday, a team begins the three-week process of dismantling Dippy before conservators spend 12 months preparing the delicate

plaster-of-Paris cast for the journey around Britain where it will go on show at eight locations from 2018 until 2020.

From the end of 2020, a bronze cast of Dippy will then go on display outside the museum.

Scottish-born American indus-

trialist Andrew Carnegie originally presented the 292-bone cast to the museum in 1905, and it has held its prominent position in the main entrance hall since 1979.

Dippy will be replaced by a 25.2 metre real skeleton of a blue whale as part of a major overhaul.

Diplodocus was first described as a new type of dinosaur in 1878

by Professor Othniel C. Marsh at Yale University. The herbivore species lived sometime between 156 and 145 million years ago and belongs to a group called sauropods, meaning ‘lizard feet’. (rtr)

DENPASAR - The plan to arrange and normalize Rangda River by the Denpasar Public Works Agency received positive response from the ranks of the local parliament. Unemployment dominated by college graduates

Academicians asked to evaluate education system

DENPASAR - The government of Bali Province looked for input and solutions in addressing the unemployment trends dominated by college graduates (diploma and bachelor). This was revealed by a number of university leaders, entrepreneurs and Bali House of Representatives in the interactive dialogue in the form of workshop entitled “Who Unemployed in Bali?” in the Wiswa Sabha Utama, Bali governor’s office on Saturday (Jan. 7).

Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, said that the number of unemployed intellectuals will continue to grow if they are not given

serious attention. Primarily due to graduation at several universities, it is estimated to reach 25,000 people each year.

The academicians even asked to evaluate the education system in order to be able to produce graduates in appropriate with the needs of job markets. In addition, the universities are also asked to adjust the department to be opened pursuant to the demand of labor market.

SeaWorld killer whale at the center of “Blackfish” film dies

TAMPA - Tilikum, the orca who killed several people and was featured in the documentary “Blackfish” making the case against keeping orcas in captivity, died on Friday, SeaWorld Entertaintment Inc said.

Thought to be about 36 years old, Tilikum drew international attention for dragging a SeaWorld trainer underwater to her death during a 2010 show in Florida.

Tilikum had been experiencing declining health and receiving treatment for a bacterial lung infection, the company said in a news release. It noted that an official cause of death would not be known until a necropsy was completed.

“Tilikum had, and will continue

to have, a special place in the hearts of the SeaWorld family, as well as the millions of people all over the world that he inspired,” SeaWorld President and CEO Joel Manby said in a statement.

The theme park saw its image tarnished after the release of the 2013 documentary, which depicted the captivity and public exhibition of killer whales as cruel.

The film chronicled the life of Tilikum, who was captured in 1983 around the age of 2. He spent 25 years in SeaWorld’s care.

“From the moment he was taken from his ocean family, his life was tragic and filled with pain, as are the lives of the other animals who remain in SeaWorld’s tanks and exhibits,” Lisa Lange, senior vice president for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) in a statement.

Tilikum was bred 21 times, with 11 of his offspring previously dying, PETA noted.

After the documentary and protests by PETA, SeaWorld cut jobs, lost promotional deals and faced attendance drops. The company last year pledged to stop breeding killer whales in captivity and to phase out its whale entertainment shows. Mexicans march against gas price hike, little looting

MEXICO CITY — A protest against Mexico’s 20-percent gasoline price hike turned violent Saturday after a lone protester drove his truck into a line of police guarding a fuel distribution terminal in Baja California. Federal police said seven officers were injured in the incident in Rosarito, near the border city of Tijuana.

Video showed the small pickup driving straight into the line of riot police, then backing up and speeding off. Largely peaceful protests against the fuel price increases continued elsewhere in Mexico Saturday, and looting seen earlier in the week largely subsided. But nervousness remained.

Officials in Veracruz, one of the states hardest-hit by the looting on Wednesday and Thursday, said some neighborhood groups had begun to form patrols of residents armed with staves or machetes to ward off looters. Veracruz Gov. Miguel Angel Yunes Linares said 532 people had been detained in his state alone and that social rumors of further looting — apparently unfounded — had caused “an artificial psychosis.”

He said that in the northern part of the state, given this psychosis, “the neighbors decided to arm themselves with staves, machetes,

creating the impression that there were armed groups of criminals.”

Yunes Linares said the government was trying to convince residents to stop such patrolling.

The Interior Department reported a total of more than 1,500 people have been detained for looting or disturbances nationwide since protests began early in the week.
