VANCOUVER - “Deadpool” star Ryan Reynolds said on Monday that actors and crew were “heartbroken, shocked and devastated” at the death of a driver in a motorcycle stunt in Vancouver that went wrong.

“Today, we tragically lost a member of our crew while filming ‘Deadpool’,” Reynolds, a native of Vancouver, said in a message on his social media platforms. Vancouver police confirmed the death on Monday of the stuntwoman on the set of 20th Century Fox’s superhero movie “Deadpool 2” but gave no further details and did not release her name. Local media said the woman appeared to lose control of the motorbike, which drove off the set and through the window of a building across the street. The film is a sequel to the 2016 R-rated comedy “Deadpool,” starring Reynolds as the foul-mouthed Marvel superhero Deadpool. Movie studio 20th Century Fox, a unit of Twenty-First Century Fox Inc., did not say whether production had been halted. Spokesman Dan Berger said the studio was “deeply saddened by the accident.” Reynolds said the cast and crew were “heartbroken, shocked and devastated...

Taylor Swift wins groping trial against DJ, awarded symbolic $1 DENVER - Taylor Swift won her trial against a Colorado radio personality on Monday after a jury found that the former DJ assaulted and battered the pop star by groping her bare bottom, and awarded her the symbolic $1 in damages she had sought. Swift cried and hugged her mother as the verdicts were read in U.S. District Court in Denver and mouthed an emphatic “thank you” to members of the jury as they left the courtroom. The six-woman, two-man jury, which deliberated for less than four hours following a sensational week-long trial, also rejected claims by radio personality David Mueller that members of Swift’s management team - her mother and a radio station liaison - got him fired from his “dream job” as a DJ by making false accusations. “I acknowledge the privilege that I benefit from in life, in society and in my ability to shoulder the enormous cost of defending myself
in a trial like this,” the 27-year-old singer said in a statement released immediately following the verdicts. “My hope is to help those whose voices should also be heard,” Swift said, adding that she would make donations to organizations that help sexual assault victims defend themselves. Mueller, 55, showed no reaction as the verdicts were read. The DJ had initiated the litigation after he was fired from his job after the groping claim was reported to the radio station. In his lawsuit he called the groping accusations false, and he sued Swift, her mother, Andrea, and radio station liaison Frank Bell over his termination. During closing statements in the case, Mueller’s attorney, Gabriel McFarland, argued that his client was a respected industry veteran who would never have risked his $150,000-per-year radio job by grabbing a major celebrity’s rear end. TABANAN - Bali is famous for its culture but also for its handicrafts. The number of professional wood carvers on the island have however been dwindling. Currently, young people rarely want to practice this skill as their main source of income. In order to add economic value to this profession and thus entice more young people to want to preserve this art form, 25 year old I Wayan Lovayana from Kuwun, Marga Village, Tabanan has been making handphone cases with Balinese style carvings. When met on Monday (Aug. 14), Lovayana explained that he was inspired to develop this business in response to the traditional art of carving that is practiced in Marga Village. There are still quite a lot of carving businesses in Marga, he said but most of them make doors and furniture. There is fear that carving artists will have no successors. In keeping with the progress of time and technology, less and less young people are interested in pursuing traditional arts and culture. Most young people in Bali, he said are more interested in working in tourism. “If the arts continue to be aban- The unique handphone chases. doned, this will impact the welfare of artists and also lead to the loss of Balinese cultural identity”, said Lovayana. On that account, starting with his masters’ thesis Lovayana began to think of ways to preserve Balinese carving by adding economic value to this profession. Loivayana then worked with artists from his own village and from Ubud to make a carved wood phone case. His target market is the upper-middle class.
Given this upscale target market, the phone cases made under the brand Tattwa Nusantara are currently focused on brands like iphone and Samsung Note generation and Galaxy S. His wooden cases sell for between IDR 350,000 to IDR 750,000. Lovayana feesl confident about selling at such prices as his phone cases are artworks and the first of their kind in Indonesia and maybe the world. Lovayana is not developing this business alone. Alone but works with young people from his village who help with sales and design to grow this business. The themes depicted in his engraved casing usually feature gods like Ganesha, Barong and others. “We can also make customized order. We take pre-orders as it takes about a week to make”, he explained. In order to improve the economy of the carving artists, Lovayana implements a profit sharing system where carving artists get 50 percent of the selling price. With such a promising income, young people will more likely want to pursue this profession, thus the Balinese art of carving will be preserved. Lovayana leaves it to the artists to obtain the wood for these cases, which is said is often salvaged from Marga’s furniture and building carvers’ scraps “So, in addition to preserving our culture, it also preserves the environment by maximizing the use of unused wood”, he added. Once the carving is done, IBP/Wira Sanjiwani Lovayana then puts in rubber lining to protect the handphones from getting scratch when the wooden cases are mounted. These handphone cases have drawn interest from buyers across Indonesia as wel as customers from abroad. Unfortunately expensive shipping costs make export less appealing for small scale orders. “In the future, we hope to cooperate with a foundations in Hong Kong. So, the orders can be in large quantities with a consignment sale system”, added Lovayana. (kmb24)

In Bali, five school days a week not mandatory
DENPASAR - The full-days or five days of school a week program has not become mandatory in Bali. Nevertheless, some schools have submitted requests from the Bali Education Agency to be able to implemented the five-day school week. “For the schools that are ready, it’s, ok, but for those that are not, it should not be forced. Actually there hasn’t been any issue about this”, said Head of the Bali Education Agency, TIA Kusuma Wardhani, when asked for her confirmation on Monday (Aug. 14). TIA confirmed that some school shad already started implemented the full-day policy but admitted that she had not personally investigated the matter first hand. Given that the matter is still being discussed in the central government, she will coordinate things as need be. “I think there are only one or two schools in Denpasar that are running this program. Outside Denpasar, we have not recorded the numbers because it has not
become a national agenda. Later on, the rules will be set forth in a presidential regulation and this does not have to be implemented by all schools as conditions vary” she added. If the schools are ready, continued TIA, then they can implement this system for character education. “With five working days, character education is expected to be taught optimally to children. However, when talking about character education there are three components involved namely the family, school and community”, she said. . “Beyond school hours children become the full responsibility of their family”, she said. As previously reported (Bali Post: Aug. 14), President Joko Widodo declared the issuing of a presidential decree on the strengthening of character education to replace the Minister of Education and Culture Regulation on the five-day or full-day school policy. China drone maker steps up security after U.S. Army ban
Chinese drone maker SZ DJI Technology Co Ltd is tightening data security on its drones after the U.S. Army ordered its members to stop using DJI drones because of “cyber vulnerabilities,” a company official told Reuters on Monday.
The privately held Shenzhen-based company is speeding deployment of a system that allows users to disconnect from the internet during flights, making it impossible for flight logs, photos or videos to reach DJI’s computer servers, Brendan Schulman, vice president of policy and legal affairs at DJI, said in an interview. The security measure had been in the works for several months but DJI said it is bringing it out sooner than planned because of an Army memo earlier this month that barred service members from using DJI drones. DJI said it has not had any communication with the Army about the issue. An Army spokesman did not respond to a request for comment. The other branches of the military have not banned the use of drones by DJI, the largest consumer drone maker with millions of the devices sold. “The Army memo caused customers to express renewed concern about data security” and prompted DJI to speed up data security changes, Schulman said. Some drone pilots choose to share images and video
with DJI, which makes them visible on its SkyPixel website. But many businesses and government customers have raised concerns about sensitive video and pictures - such as movie footage or images of critical infrastructure - and want to ensure it is never sent to DJI, he said. DJI said it does not collect images, video or flight logs from users unless they share them. But turning on the new “local data mode” will prevent accidental syncing with DJI’s servers. Its drones do not rely on an internet connection to fly. Cutting the link between the internet and DJI’s controller apps that run on tablets and mobile phones will disable updates of maps, flight restrictions and other data that the controller application receives from the internet while the drone is in use, he said. Schulman said DJI plans to make updates to its controller applications available by the end of September, earlier than previously planned. The new apps with local data mode may not be available in all countries if there are regulations that require pilots to have the most updated maps and information. DJI had about 70 percent share of the global commercial and consumer drone market, analysts at Goldman Sachs and Oppenheimer estimated in 2016. Goldman analysts estimated the market, including military, to be worth more than $100 billion over the next five years. (rtr)

Ukraine denies selling missile technology to North Korea

KIEV - Ukraine denied on Monday that it had ever supplied defense technology to North Korea, responding to an article in the New York Times that said North Korea may have purchased rocket engines from Ukrainian factory Yuzhmash. Concern that North Korea is close to achieving its goal of putting the mainland United States within range of a nuclear weapon has raised global tensions in recent weeks. The United States is a key backer of Ukraine. The secretary of the Ukrainian Security and Defence Council, Oleksandr Turchynov, said Ukraine “has never supplied rocket engines or any kind of missile technology to North Korea.” State-owned Yuzhmash said it had not produced military-grade ballistic missiles since independence from the Soviet Union in
1991. “In the years of independence, Yuzhmash has not produced, and is not producing, missiles and military missile systems,” it said in a statement published on their company’s website. President Donald Trump warned at the weekend that the U.S. military was “locked and loaded” if North Korea acted unwisely after threatening last week to land missiles near the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam. North Korean officials in turn have accused the U.S. leader of driving the Korean peninsula to the brink of nuclear war. On Sunday, the head of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency said he would not be surprised if North Korea tested another missile, after it conducted two tests in July. (rtr)

Six hectares of dry land set fire AMLAPURA — The fire that raged though six hectares of dry land covered in shrubs and a small plantation owned by residents of Tigaron Kangin Hamlet, Sukasada Village, Kubu, had people panicking. No casualties were reported in the incident however and the fire was quickly extinguished by firefighters along with the regional disaster mitigation agency (BPBD), police and members of the surrounding community. The incident occurred around 14:00 when a 63 year old local resident named Mangku Nengah Raka noticed a small flame in her garden. As she approached she realized that the flames had already engulfed about 1 hectare and was spreading quickly. “I panicked and immediately told my husband,
I Made Rupa”, explained Raka. Rupa and his son Made Eka Wijayana immediately went to see what was going on. As soon as they saw how big the fire was, they called the fire department. While they waited for the firefighters to arrive, this father and son team along with other local residents used buckets of water to try to slow down the fire’s progress. Not long after, the Karangasem firefighters arrived with five fleets, the BPBD Karangasem alo arrived with a double-cabin vehicle, police and the national military (TNI). They all worked to put out the fire and finally managed to stop the fire at around 16:00. Once the fire was extinguished, Kubu Police personnel led by police the Chief of Criminal Investigation Unit started investigating the scene. Chief of the Kubu Police,
Made Suadnyana, said that based on the results of the crime scene investigation, the fire is alleged to have started due to the hot weather and strong winds which made the dry scrub easy to catch fire. He also assured that there were no casualties or other losses due to the fire. Fortunately the fire was extinguished before spreading to surrounding neighbourhoods. “We appeal to the public to remain alert to the potential for subsequent fires and to immediately report any forces to the authorities so that that it can be handled promptly” added Kubu Police. DENPASAR — The Denpasar district court’s panel of judged has given a verdict of guilty Alexey Prusov from Russia with a sentence of nine years imprisonment. However, this man charged with smuggling 106.00 gram of crystal meth did not accept the verdict and has requested an appeal.
Valerian Libert Wange who accompanied Prusov on Monday (Aug. 14) said: “The defendant is filing an appeal, but we are no longer serving as his legal counsel. For further information, please contact the prosecutor about the defendant’s appeal”, said Valerian. Prosecutor Eddy Artha Wijaya

Chinese tour guide arrested for smuggling drugs DENPASAR — A joint team of the National Narcotic Agency (BNNP) Bali and Ngurah Rai Airport Customs and Excise arrested a foreign tourist found carrying drugs. On Friday (Aug. 11), officers arrested 33 year old tour guide from China named Tiecheng, when arrived at Ngurah Rai Airport terminal, Tuban, fro trying to smuggle in crystal meth. “Previously our personnel also arrested an American tourist. This proves that the airport is still being taken advantage of by drug syndicates”, said Chief of BNNP Bali, Putu Gede Suastawa, on Sunday (Aug. 13). Cooperation between the BNNP Bali and Customs and Excise, continued Suastawa, has been more intensified as various attempts are being committed by drug mafia to smuggle illicit goods in to Bali. MANGUPURA — The population of Bali Starlings continues to decrease. Currently there are only 200 wild of these wild birds left on the island. A number of parties have become concerned about such conditions. Pertamina and the community of Sibang Kaja Village in the sub-district of Badung for example are working with Kembang Sari Segara Group - state owned enterprise to conserve Bali Starlings by starting a bird breeding group in Sibang Kaja. This endeavour was first started in June 2016, when just 9 pairs of Bali Starling were being bred. Since then the number of birds has increased to a total of 40 birds. On an area of land covering 3,000 square meters an educational tourist attraction is also being developed. Turkey, deer, rabbits are also being included in this conservation area. “Initially, this was just a mulberry garden but was then arranged into an educational park”, said Operation Head of Pertamina for DPPU Ngurah Rai, Arnaya Gula, accompanied by Kembang Sari Segara Group Head, I Nyoman Madia, on Sunday (Aug. 13). The Kembang Sari Segara Group has been coached about how to make feed for the turkey and Bali Starlings, which they make from crab shells, bran and corn. They have received a processing machine
through cooperation with Udayana University. A total of three machines are used to make the crab shell pellet. One machine is used to crush the shells into flour, while the two others are used to mix the shells, corn and bran, as to mould the pellets. Crab shells have a high calcium content which strengthens the bones of poultry, especially Bali Starlings and the chitin found in these shells helps to beautify this small bird’s feathers. In addition to poultry, the feed can also be given to fish. Crab shell feed does not take long to make and is now being mass produced for sale in public markets. SEOUL - North Korea’s leader has delayed a decision on firing missiles towards Guam while he waits to see what the United States does next, the North’s state media said on Tuesday, as South Korea’s president said Seoul would seek to prevent war by all means. Signs of an easing in tension on the Korean peninsula helped stock markets rally for a second day running even as the United States and South Korea prepared for more joint military drills, which infuriate the North, and experts warned it could still go ahead with its provocative plan. In his first public appearance in about two weeks, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un inspected the command of the North’s army on Monday, examining a plan to fire four missiles to land near the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam, the official KCNA said in a report. “He said that if the Yankees persist in their extremely dangerous reckless actions on the Korean peninsula and in its vicinity, testing the self-restraint of the DPRK, the latter will make an important decision as it already declared,” the report said. The DPRK stands for North Korea’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. In photos released with the KCNA report, Kim was seen holding a baton and pointing at a map showing a flight path for the missiles appearing to start from North Korea’s east coast, flying over Japan towards Guam. Job shares and working from home are key to boost women’s salaries, the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) said, as British women earn 18 percent less than men for the same job. “We need to overhaul our culture and make flexible working the norm - looking beyond women as the primary caregivers and having tough conversations about the biases that are rife in our workforce and society,” Caroline Waters, EHRC’s deputy chairwoman, said in a statement. Men and women should be encouraged to share childcare duties and fathers should be offered well-paid “use it or lose it” paternity leave to relieve the pressure on mothers to stall their careers to take care of their children, EHRC said. The report comes a month after Britain’s public broadcaster, the BBC, revealed that its top male star was paid five times more than
its best-paid female presenter, prompting public criticism. In April, large firms in Britain were required by law to report pay discrepancies between male and female employees. The pay gap for ethnic minorities is 5.7 percent and 13.6 percent for the disabled, EHRC said. “The pay gaps issue sits right at the heart of our society and is a symbol of the work we still need to do to achieve equality for all,” Waters said. “While there has been some progress, it has been painfully slow. SINGAPORE - The dollar edged higher against the yen on Tuesday, pulling away from a recent four-month low, as concerns over tensions between the United States and North Korea eased for now, supporting risk appetite. Traders said the greenback also gained a lift after New York Fed President William Dudley said in an interview with the Associated Press that he would be in favour of another interest rate hike this year if the economy evolved in line with his expectations. The dollar rose 0.4 percent to 110.04 yen, pulling further away from a near four-month low of 108.72 yen set on Friday. The safe haven Swiss franc eased, with the dollar gaining about 0.1 percent to 0.9725 francs. Denpasar’s Taman Budaya or Art Center is perhaps best known for the annual Pesta Kesenian Bali (PKB) or Bali Art Festival (BAF) that takes place here every June-July. This month long festival features an astonishingly diverse array of traditional performing arts from all over Bali as well as collaborative performances with artists from other parts of the world and is very much in line with the original intention of the Art Center. Bali’s then governor, Ida Bagus Mantra had the idea of creating a venue where Bali’s traditional and contemporary arts could be displayed, performed, developed and maintained in the face of the onslaught of international influences that were hitting Bali in the early 1970’s. The Art Center was built under his government in 1973 and was modelled after Balinese temple architecture with a healthy dose of elaborate Balinese ornamentation. To this day, the Art Center still functions according to this original intention housing a permanent collection of Balinese paintings, photographs and other objects. Complete with a giant open air amphitheatre, only slightly smaller indoor stage and several other performance spaces, the
Art Center still hosts the BKB (Bali Arts Festival) as well as myriad other events throughout the year. During an elaborate staging of a contemporary dance performance by students graduating from ISI Denpasar -the national arts school that lies adjacent to the Art centre, American couple Tina and Jonathan said: “it is so nice to see what young Indonesians are creating. It’s also impressive to see them use this beautiful outdoor space that allowed them to create this choreography that just would not have have worked so well indoors”. After the show they walked around the Art Center and commented that they pleased to see the Balinese carvings on the buildings set amongst so many trees. The sprawling grounds of the
Denpasar Art Center, also include two sculpted bridges that cross the small portion of river that runs through the grounds, several pagodas, and an impressive lotus flower pond located in front of goddess statues from whom pour forth water similar to types of spouts found in some of Bali’s well-known temples. All the buildings located here host art events and exhibitions and are also impressive in they gradeur and ornate sculptural details that are overshadowed only by the majestic trees. In short, not only are these grounds dedicated to Balinese art but also to the beauty of the Island of Bali and make for a lovely place to take a few moments to stroll around or just sit and marvel at the wonder of it all. BALI - Students scrambled to safety as sirens blared during a tsunami drill on the Indonesian resort island of Bali on Tuesday, part of a campaign to prepare for disasters in the quake-prone country. Students at the Tanjung Benoa 2 elementary school took cover under their desks when the quake drill began, and then followed a tsunami evacuation route to the roof of a nearby hotel. The exercise was part of a joint
project by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Japan’s government to raise awareness among children in 18 Asia-Pacific nations. “Indonesia and Japan have the same high risk of natural disasters like earthquakes and tsunami ... so it’s very reasonable that Indonesia is given priority in this project,” said Hirohisa Chiba, Japan’s consul general to Indonesia. Indonesia was the country worst-
hit in 2004 by an Indian Ocean tsunami triggered by a 9.1 magnitude earthquake. The province of Aceh on the northwest tip of Sumatra island bore the brunt of tsunami, with at least 168,000 killed. The bebek mekepu menu has a superior taste, so that it distinguishes from other duck menus. It has a specialty in black color. It does not happen due to being burned but due to the influence of spices in use. The meat feels soft and tender because the marinade entirely seeps into the flesh. When served, it comes with three kinds of condiment namely green condiment, fried shallot and pounded condiment, so there is a choice of flavor. “I designed this menu inspired by the menu encountered in one of the ceremonies in Bali,” he said. The duck meat does not feel fishy because it has passed through a long process, starting from the provision of spices and then massaged to make the seasoning get absorbed well. After that, it is silenced. Few minutes later, it is boiled about for half a day and then fried until getting crispy. Other than coming with three types of spices, the presentation of this bebek mekepu is also served with rice, plecing kangkung, sate lilit and ares bebek. “Although the process is long, it can be served very quickly as supported by experienced waiters,” he said. Another menu that is not less interesting is the betutu ayam keren. Although using ingredient of red chicken, the meat is soft to the bone. The meat texture is soft and not hard if chewed. A portion of betutu ayam keren is served with urap vegetable, plecing kangkung, rice, raw condiment as well as fried shallot and served by using bamboo tray. Dozens of houses were covered in mud when a mountainside collapsed in the town of Regent on Monday morning, one of the deadliest natural disasters in Africa in recent years. “We have a total of 270 corpses which we are now preparing for burial,” Freetown mayor Sam Gibson told reporters outside city hall. A mass burial today will free up space for more bodies in the central morgue, which is overloaded, a Reuters witness said. President Ernest Bai Koroma urged residents of Regent and other flooded areas around Freetown to evacuate immediately so that military personnel and other rescue workers could continue to search for survivors that might be buried underneath debris. Rescue centres have been set up around the capital to register and assist victims, he said in a television address on Monday evening. (rtr)
Venezuela’s Maduro calls for military exercises after Trump threat
CARACAS - Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Monday called for military exercises after U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat of a possible armed intervention in the country, but Maduro insisted he still wanted to hold talks with the U.S. leader. As Maduro told supporters in Caracas to prepare for an “imperialist” invasion, U.S. Vice President Mike Pence sought to calm concerns in the region about Trump’s talk, promising a peaceful solution to Venezuela’s “collapse into dictatorship.” The unpopular Maduro, struggling with a disintegrating economy at home and increasing diplomatic isolation abroad, has used Trump’s comments on Friday to reaffirm longstanding accusations that Washington is preparing a military attack. “Everyone has to join the defense plan, millions of men and women, let’s see how the American imperialists like it,” Maduro told supporters, urging them to join the two-day operation on Aug 26 and 27 involving both soldiers and civilians. Thousands of government supporters rallied in Caracas where they dennounced Trump’s suggestion of a
“military option” to resolve Venezuela’s crisis. Over 120 people have been killed since anti-government protests began in April, driven by outrage over shortages of food and medicine and Maduro’s creation of a legislative superbody that governments around the world say is dictatorial. Maduro said Trump’s advisors had confused him about the true situation in Venezuela. “I want to talk by phone with Mr. Trump, to tell him ‘They’re fooling you, Trump, everything they tell you about Venezuela is a lie. They’re throwing you off a cliff.’” The White House last week rebuffed Maduro’s request to speak to Trump, saying the president would talk with Venezuela’s leader when the country returned to democracy. ‘FAILED STATE’

JAKARTA - A witness in a $170 million Indonesian graft investigation linked to a national electronic identity card system told a witness protection agency he was worried about his safety just weeks before his suspected suicide, officials said. Johannes Marliem, 32, whose U.S.-based company had a contract to supply the ID cards, was pronounced dead on Thursday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head after a standoff with police in Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.
Earlier that week, on Tuesday, U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation officers executed a federal search warrant at the same residence, said FBI spokesperson Laura Eimiller, declining to give further details. Last month, Marliem, had been in contact with Indonesia’s Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK) on several occasions and also told media he had evidence in the form of digital recordings of his dealings with Indonesian politicians implicated in the scandal. “He said he was rather scared because he had 500 gigabytes of evidence,” LPSK deputy chairman Hasto Atmojo Suroyo told Reuters. MELBOURNE - Australian cyclist Stephen Wooldridge, a former Olympic and world champion, has died at the age of 39. Wooldridge won a team pursuit gold at the 2004 Athens Olympics and four world titles in the same discipline from 2002-06. Wooldridge’s death came as a shock to Australia’s cycling community and triggered a flood of tributes on social media. “Our thoughts are with Stephen’s family and friends during this very difficult time,” Cycling Australia CEO Nick Green said in a statement. “Steve will be remembered by so many for not only his success in competition, but also for the contributions he made across so many roles in the sport.” After his track career wound down, Sydney-born Wooldridge held a number of administrative roles in cycling and education. CHARLOTTE - Hideki Matsuyama announced on Monday that he has been married since January and is now a father, news which caught Japanese media and fans by surprise. Though numerous Japanese reporters follow Matsuyama every second of the day that he spends on a golf course, the world number two was able to keep his nuptials and fatherhood under wraps for months.

LONDON - English Premier League clubs are set to discuss whether to shut the transfer window before the start of the 201819 season when they meet next month, British media have reported. Representatives from the 20 top-flight clubs are due to attend a shareholders meeting on Sept. 7 with the majority pushing for a new, earlier, transfer deadline to be introduced. Talks are expected to take place between all the clubs about whether to change the end of the window, which currently closes on Aug. 31 nearly three weeks after the first game.
It will be proposed that the transfer deadline is brought forward to the week before the start of the 2018-19 Premier League season, The Daily Telegraph reported on its website. British media said the majority of Premier League clubs favour an earlier window closure, with the approval of at least 14 of the 20 required for a new rule to be introduced. Speculation has been mounting in local media that the former Manchester United and Juventus forward was attempting to orchestrate a move back to Boca Juniors, who sold the 33-year-old to Shenhua for 11 million euros ($12.93 million) in January. He has played just 11 times in the league for Shenhua, scoring twice, with his fitful performances blamed on the injury that first occurred in April. Venezuela’s Maduro calls for military exercises after Trump threat
CARACAS - Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Monday called for military exercises after U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat of a possible armed intervention in the country, but Maduro insisted he still wanted to hold talks with the U.S. leader. As Maduro told supporters in Caracas to prepare for an “imperialist” invasion, U.S. Vice President Mike Pence sought to calm concerns in the region about Trump’s talk, promising a peaceful solution to Venezuela’s “collapse into dictatorship.” The unpopular Maduro, struggling with a disintegrating economy at home and increasing diplomatic isolation abroad, has used Trump’s comments on Friday to reaffirm longstanding accusations that Washington is preparing a military attack. “Everyone has to join the defense plan, millions of men and women, let’s see how the American imperialists like it,” Maduro told supporters, urging them to join the two-day operation on Aug 26 and 27 involving both soldiers and civilians. Thousands of government supporters rallied in Caracas where they dennounced Trump’s suggestion of a
“military option” to resolve Venezuela’s crisis. Over 120 people have been killed since anti-government protests began in April, driven by outrage over shortages of food and medicine and Maduro’s creation of a legislative superbody that governments around the world say is dictatorial. Maduro said Trump’s advisors had confused him about the true situation in Venezuela. “I want to talk by phone with Mr. Trump, to tell him ‘They’re fooling you, Trump, everything they tell you about Venezuela is a lie. JAKARTA - A witness in a $170 million Indonesian graft investigation linked to a national electronic identity card system told a witness protection agency he was worried about his safety just weeks before his suspected suicide, officials said. Johannes Marliem, 32, whose U.S.-based company had a contract to supply the ID cards, was pronounced dead on Thursday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head after a standoff with police in Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.
Earlier that week, on Tuesday, U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation officers executed a federal search warrant at the same residence, said FBI spokesperson Laura Eimiller, declining to give further details. Last month, Marliem, had been in contact with Indonesia’s Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK) on several occasions and also told media he had evidence in the form of digital recordings of his dealings with Indonesian politicians implicated in the scandal. “He said he was rather scared because he had 500 gigabytes of evidence,” LPSK deputy chairman Hasto Atmojo Suroyo told Reuters. Marliem was offered protection by authorities in late July but had not formally applied for it, Suroyo added. “He asked for clarification on how to apply,” he said. “But then he suddenly died.” Marliem’s company, PT Biomorf Lone Indonesia, won the tender to supply automated fingerprint identification technology in a case that dates back to 2009, and centres on allegations that sums ranging from $5,000 to $5.5 million - money generated by marking up the costs of the ID card programme - were divided up in a room in parliament. The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has already named the parliamentary speaker, Setya
Novanto, as a suspect in the investigation into the ID card scandal and is targeting at least 37 people including politicians and officials. Novanto has denied any wrongdoing over the scandal in which 2.31 trillion rupiah ($173.07 million) is alleged to have been stolen. Another LPSK official, deputy chairwoman Lili Pantauli Siregar, said if the agency had received the application it could have taken immediate action to assist him. Instead, she said, Marliem had sent her a link to a fundraising page, requesting $5 million in donations. “I understood with this he was looking for donations to live,” she added. Reuters could not verify the authenticity of the page that included a section stating that to reveal more information “the whistleblower needs protection, and other resources to stay alive”. According to a KPK indictment, Marliem made sums of $14.88 million and 25.24 billion rupiah from the project. According to media reports, Marliem had been interviewed by KPK investigators overseas. Siregar did not specify what nationality he held but said he would have been given protection whether he was an Indonesian citizen or not. Ed Winter, assistant chief of investigations at the LA County coroner’s office, said that Marliem’s death had been ruled a suicide. Los Angeles Police Department spokeswoman Officer Liliana Preciado said that Los Angeles SWAT officers had responded on late Wednesday afternoon to the residence where he died, finding a man barricaded inside. They entered the residence after midnight and found the man had shot himself and was dead. A woman and a minor left the building late at night, police spokeswoman Detective Meghan Aguilar added, declining to give further details. Job shares and working from home are key to boost women’s salaries, the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) said, as British women earn 18 percent less than men for the same job. “We need to overhaul our culture and make flexible working the norm - looking beyond women as the primary caregivers and having tough conversations about the biases that are rife in our workforce and society,” Caroline Waters, EHRC’s deputy chairwoman, said in a statement. Men and women should be encouraged to share childcare duties and fathers should be offered well-paid “use it or lose it” paternity leave to relieve the pressure on mothers to stall their careers to take care of their children, EHRC said. The report comes a month after Britain’s public broadcaster, the BBC, revealed that its top male star was paid five times more than
its best-paid female presenter, prompting public criticism. In April, large firms in Britain were required by law to report pay discrepancies between male and female employees. The pay gap for ethnic minorities is 5.7 percent and 13.6 percent for the disabled, EHRC said. “The pay gaps issue sits right at the heart of our society and is a symbol of the work we still need to do to achieve equality for all,” Waters said. “While there has been some progress, it has been painfully slow. SINGAPORE - The dollar edged higher against the yen on Tuesday, pulling away from a recent four-month low, as concerns over tensions between the United States and North Korea eased for now, supporting risk appetite. North Korea’s said he will watch the actions of the United States for a while longer before making a decision on a threatened missile strike near Guam, the North’s official news agency said on Tuesday. “The rhetoric is easing. I think the market was sort of leaning that way anyway,” said Stephen Innes, head of trading in Asia-Pacific for OANDA in Singapore, referring to an easing in investor concerns over the tensions between the United

Traders said the greenback also gained a lift after New York Fed President William Dudley said in an interview with the Associated Press that he would be in favour of another interest rate hike this year if the economy evolved in line with his expectations. The dollar rose 0.4 percent to 110.04 yen, pulling further away from a near four-month low of 108.72 yen set on Friday. The safe haven Swiss franc eased, with the dollar gaining about 0.1 percent to 0.9725 francs. Denpasar’s Taman Budaya or Art Center is perhaps best known for the annual Pesta Kesenian Bali (PKB) or Bali Art Festival (BAF) that takes place here every June-July. This month long festival features an astonishingly diverse array of traditional performing arts from all over Bali as well as collaborative performances with artists from other parts of the world and is very much in line with the original intention of the Art Center. Bali’s then governor, Ida Bagus Mantra had the idea of creating a venue where Bali’s traditional and contemporary arts could be displayed, performed, developed and maintained in the face of the onslaught of international influences that were hitting Bali in the early 1970’s. The Art Center was built under his government in 1973 and was modelled after Balinese temple architecture with a healthy dose of elaborate Balinese ornamentation. To this day, the Art Center still functions according to this original intention housing a permanent collection of Balinese paintings, photographs and other objects. Complete with a giant open air amphitheatre, only slightly smaller indoor stage and several other performance spaces, the
Art Center still hosts the BKB (Bali Arts Festival) as well as myriad other events throughout the year. During an elaborate staging of a contemporary dance performance by students graduating from ISI Denpasar -the national arts school that lies adjacent to the Art centre, American couple Tina and Jonathan said: “it is so nice to see what young Indonesians are creating. It’s also impressive to see them use this beautiful outdoor space that allowed them to create this choreography that just would not have have worked so well indoors”. After the show they walked around the Art Center and commented that they pleased to see the Balinese carvings on the buildings set amongst so many trees. The sprawling grounds of the
Denpasar Art Center, also include two sculpted bridges that cross the small portion of river that runs through the grounds, several pagodas, and an impressive lotus flower pond located in front of goddess statues from whom pour forth water similar to types of spouts found in some of Bali’s well-known temples. All the buildings located here host art events and exhibitions and are also impressive in they gradeur and ornate sculptural details that are overshadowed only by the majestic trees. In short, not only are these grounds dedicated to Balinese art but also to the beauty of the Island of Bali and make for a lovely place to take a few moments to stroll around or just sit and marvel at the wonder of it all. BALI - Students scrambled to safety as sirens blared during a tsunami drill on the Indonesian resort island of Bali on Tuesday, part of a campaign to prepare for disasters in the quake-prone country. Students at the Tanjung Benoa 2 elementary school took cover under their desks when the quake drill began, and then followed a tsunami evacuation route to the roof of a nearby hotel. The exercise was part of a joint
project by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Japan’s government to raise awareness among children in 18 Asia-Pacific nations. “Indonesia and Japan have the same high risk of natural disasters like earthquakes and tsunami ... so it’s very reasonable that Indonesia is given priority in this project,” said Hirohisa Chiba, Japan’s consul general to Indonesia. Indonesia was the country worst-
hit in 2004 by an Indian Ocean tsunami triggered by a 9.1 magnitude earthquake. The province of Aceh on the northwest tip of Sumatra island bore the brunt of tsunami, with at least 168,000 killed. Huge tsunami waves slammed into Japan’s northeast coast in 2011, killing about 18,000 people and prompting authorities to revise warning systems and evacuation plans to save more lives. (rtr)

From about 20 menus available, barbeque pork ribs, bebek judes, steamed chicken (betutu) and bebek mekepu is the mostly ordered. “Other than offering good taste, the price is also affordable that can be reached by various circles, including local communities,” added Putu Suryawan accompanied by Operations Manager I Made Wiranata and Sales Marketing Lidya Minanti. The bebek mekepu menu has a superior taste, so that it distinguishes from other duck menus. It has a specialty in black color. It does not happen due to being burned but due to the influence of spices in use. The meat feels soft and tender because the marinade entirely seeps into the flesh. When served, it comes with three kinds of condiment namely green condiment, fried shallot and pounded condiment, so there is a choice of flavor. “I designed this menu inspired by the menu encountered in one of the ceremonies in Bali,” he said. The duck meat does not feel fishy because it has passed through a long process, starting from the provision of spices and then massaged to make the seasoning get absorbed well. After that, it is silenced. Few minutes later, it is boiled about for half a day and then fried until getting crispy. Other than coming with three types of spices, the presentation of this bebek mekepu is also served with rice, plecing kangkung, sate lilit and ares bebek. “Although the process is long, it can be served very quickly as supported by experienced waiters,” he said. Another menu that is not less interesting is the betutu ayam keren. Although using ingredient of red chicken, the meat is soft to the bone. The meat texture is soft and not hard if chewed. A portion of betutu ayam keren is served with urap vegetable, plecing kangkung, rice, raw condiment as well as fried shallot and served by using bamboo tray. Chinese tour guide arrested for smuggling drugs DENPASAR — A joint team of the National Narcotic Agency (BNNP) Bali and Ngurah Rai Airport Customs and Excise arrested a foreign tourist found carrying drugs. On Friday (Aug. 11), officers arrested 33 year old tour guide from China named Tiecheng, when arrived at Ngurah Rai Airport terminal, Tuban, fro trying to smuggle in crystal meth. “Previously our personnel also arrested an American tourist. This proves that the airport is still being taken advantage of by drug syndicates”, said Chief of BNNP Bali, Putu Gede Suastawa, on Sunday (Aug. 13). Cooperation between the BNNP Bali and Customs and Excise, continued Suastawa, has been more intensified as various attempts are being committed by drug mafia to smuggle illicit goods in to Bali. Suastawa affirmed that in the case the usual supervision and monitoring of passengers landing at the domestic and international terminal was conducted by this joint team. On Friday (Aug. 11) at 00:00, Citilink aircraft with flight number QG 8839 on route from Ningbo China landed in Denpasar. As usual, the passengers’ luggage was checked using the X-ray scanner. The officers suspected something suspicious was inside the suspect’s backpack. After searching the bag, the officers found a package of crystal meth weighing 0.40 grams net. “The suspect, along with the evidence were then taken to the office of BNNP Bali for further investigation. According to the initial allegation, the evidence was intended for personal use”, said Suastawa accompanied by Eradication Division Head, Ketut Arta. The case, he said is still being investigated as there is the possibility that the suspect is involved in an international narcotics syndicate. MANGUPURA — The population of Bali Starlings continues to decrease. Currently there are only 200 wild of these wild birds left on the island. A number of parties have become concerned about such conditions. Pertamina and the community of Sibang Kaja Village in the sub-district of Badung for example are working with Kembang Sari Segara Group - state owned enterprise to conserve Bali Starlings by starting a bird breeding group in Sibang Kaja. This endeavour was first started in June 2016, when just 9 pairs of Bali Starling were being bred. Since then the number of birds has increased to a total of 40 birds. On an area of land covering 3,000 square meters an educational tourist attraction is also being developed. Turkey, deer, rabbits are also being included in this conservation area. “Initially, this was just a mulberry garden but was then arranged into an educational park”, said Operation Head of Pertamina for DPPU Ngurah Rai, Arnaya Gula, accompanied by Kembang Sari Segara Group Head, I Nyoman Madia, on Sunday (Aug. 13). The Kembang Sari Segara Group has been coached about how to make feed for the turkey and Bali Starlings, which they make from crab shells, bran and corn. They have received a processing machine
through cooperation with Udayana University. A total of three machines are used to make the crab shell pellet. One machine is used to crush the shells into flour, while the two others are used to mix the shells, corn and bran, as to mould the pellets. Crab shells have a high calcium content which strengthens the bones of poultry, especially Bali Starlings and the chitin found in these shells helps to beautify this small bird’s feathers. In addition to poultry, the feed can also be given to fish. Crab shell feed does not take long to make and is now being mass produced for sale in public markets. This rare bird breeding group therefor produces their feed independently and are also self- sufficient in terms of energy. also Students of SMKN 1 South Kuta vocational school are being coached
by Pertamina to make a solar power plant to provide the power needed for lighting, as well as the egg incubator and hatching machine. The conservation education center is also growing bok choy. They have purchased 500 seeds for 10 planting seasons. The proceeds from the sale of the bok choy will be used to buy more poultry. Disanvantaged people from Sibang Kaja will be given these poultry that they can then breed. Sibang Kaja village has potential in terms of becoming a tourism village, therefor Bali Starling conservation is a suitable activity that could help draw tourists. “Because Sibang Kaja village has the to become a tourism village, we are developing this educational park and within 2- 3 years we hope to become a tourism village” he added. SEOUL - North Korea’s leader has delayed a decision on firing missiles towards Guam while he waits to see what the United States does next, the North’s state media said on Tuesday, as South Korea’s president said Seoul would seek to prevent war by all means. Signs of an easing in tension on the Korean peninsula helped stock markets rally for a second day running even as the United States and South Korea prepared for more joint military drills, which infuriate the North, and experts warned it could still go ahead with its provocative plan. In his first public appearance in about two weeks, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un inspected the command of the North’s army on Monday, examining a plan to fire four missiles to land near the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam, the official KCNA said in a report. “He said that if the Yankees persist in their extremely dangerous reckless actions on the Korean peninsula and in its vicinity, testing the self-restraint of the DPRK, the latter will make an important decision as it already declared,” the report said. The DPRK stands for North Korea’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. In photos released with the KCNA report, Kim was seen holding a baton and pointing at a map showing a flight path for the missiles appearing to start from North Korea’s east coast, flying over Japan towards Guam. TOKYO - China and South Korea called on Japan to face up to its wartime past after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe sent an offering to a shrine to war dead on Tuesday, the anniversary of Japan’s World War Two surrender. Masahiko Shibayama, a lawmaker who made the offering on Abe’s behalf, said he did so to express condolences for those who died in the war and to pray for peace. He added Abe said he was sorry he could not visit the Yasukuni shrine. Past visits by Japanese leaders to Yasukuni have outraged Beijing and Seoul because it honours 14 Japanese leaders convicted by an Allied tribunal as war criminals, along with other war dead, sometimes chilling ties for months. China’s relations with Japan have long been poisoned by what Beijing sees as Tokyo’s failure to atone for its occupation of parts of China before and during World War Two. Japan occupied Korea from 1910-1945. China drone maker steps up security after U.S. Army ban
Chinese drone maker SZ DJI Technology Co Ltd is tightening data security on its drones after the U.S. Army ordered its members to stop using DJI drones because of “cyber vulnerabilities,” a company official told Reuters on Monday.
The privately held Shenzhen-based company is speeding deployment of a system that allows users to disconnect from the internet during flights, making it impossible for flight logs, photos or videos to reach DJI’s computer servers, Brendan Schulman, vice president of policy and legal affairs at DJI, said in an interview. The security measure had been in the works for several months but DJI said it is bringing it out sooner than planned because of an Army memo earlier this month that barred service members from using DJI drones. DJI said it has not had any communication with the Army about the issue. An Army spokesman did not respond to a request for comment. The other branches of the military have not banned the use of drones by DJI, the largest consumer drone maker with millions of the devices sold. “The Army memo caused customers to express renewed concern about data security” and prompted DJI to speed up data security changes, Schulman said. Some drone pilots choose to share images and video
with DJI, which makes them visible on its SkyPixel website. But many businesses and government customers have raised concerns about sensitive video and pictures - such as movie footage or images of critical infrastructure - and want to ensure it is never sent to DJI, he said. DJI said it does not collect images, video or flight logs from users unless they share them. But turning on the new “local data mode” will prevent accidental syncing with DJI’s servers. Its drones do not rely on an internet connection to fly. Cutting the link between the internet and DJI’s controller apps that run on tablets and mobile phones will disable updates of maps, flight restrictions and other data that the controller application receives from the internet while the drone is in use, he said. Schulman said DJI plans to make updates to its controller applications available by the end of September, earlier than previously planned. The new apps with local data mode may not be available in all countries if there are regulations that require pilots to have the most updated maps and information. DJI had about 70 percent share of the global commercial and consumer drone market, analysts at Goldman Sachs and Oppenheimer estimated in 2016. KIEV - Ukraine denied on Monday that it had ever supplied defense technology to North Korea, responding to an article in the New York Times that said North Korea may have purchased rocket engines from Ukrainian factory Yuzhmash. Concern that North Korea is close to achieving its goal of putting the mainland United States within range of a nuclear weapon has raised global tensions in recent weeks. The United States is a key backer of Ukraine. The secretary of the Ukrainian Security and Defence Council, Oleksandr Turchynov, said Ukraine “has never supplied rocket engines or any kind of missile technology to North Korea.” State-owned Yuzhmash said it had not produced military-grade ballistic missiles since independence from the Soviet Union in
1991. “In the years of independence, Yuzhmash has not produced, and is not producing, missiles and military missile systems,” it said in a statement published on their company’s website. President Donald Trump warned at the weekend that the U.S. military was “locked and loaded” if North Korea acted unwisely after threatening last week to land missiles near the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam. North Korean officials in turn have accused the U.S. leader of driving the Korean peninsula to the brink of nuclear war. Six hectares of dry land set fire AMLAPURA — The fire that raged though six hectares of dry land covered in shrubs and a small plantation owned by residents of Tigaron Kangin Hamlet, Sukasada Village, Kubu, had people panicking. No casualties were reported in the incident however and the fire was quickly extinguished by firefighters along with the regional disaster mitigation agency (BPBD), police and members of the surrounding community. The incident occurred around 14:00 when a 63 year old local resident named Mangku Nengah Raka noticed a small flame in her garden. As she approached she realized that the flames had already engulfed about 1 hectare and was spreading quickly. “I panicked and immediately told my husband,
I Made Rupa”, explained Raka. Rupa and his son Made Eka Wijayana immediately went to see what was going on. As soon as they saw how big the fire was, they called the fire department. While they waited for the firefighters to arrive, this father and son team along with other local residents used buckets of water to try to slow down the fire’s progress. Not long after, the Karangasem firefighters arrived with five fleets, the BPBD Karangasem alo arrived with a double-cabin vehicle, police and the national military (TNI). They all worked to put out the fire and finally managed to stop the fire at around 16:00. TABANAN - Bali is famous for its culture but also for its handicrafts. The number of professional wood carvers on the island have however been dwindling. Currently, young people rarely want to practice this skill as their main source of income. In order to add economic value to this profession and thus entice more young people to want to preserve this art form, 25 year old I Wayan Lovayana from Kuwun, Marga Village, Tabanan has been making handphone cases with Balinese style carvings. When met on Monday (Aug. 14), Lovayana explained that he was inspired to develop this business in response to the traditional art of carving that is practiced in Marga Village. There are still quite a lot of carving businesses in Marga, he said but most of them make doors and furniture. There is fear that carving artists will have no successors. In keeping with the progress of time and technology, less and less young people are interested in pursuing traditional arts and culture. Most young people in Bali, he said are more interested in working in tourism. “If the arts continue to be aban- The unique handphone chases. doned, this will impact the welfare of artists and also lead to the loss of Balinese cultural identity”, said Lovayana. On that account, starting with his masters’ thesis Lovayana began to think of ways to preserve Balinese carving by adding economic value to this profession. Loivayana then worked with artists from his own village and from Ubud to make a carved wood phone case. His target market is the upper-middle class.
Given this upscale target market, the phone cases made under the brand Tattwa Nusantara are currently focused on brands like iphone and Samsung Note generation and Galaxy S. His wooden cases sell for between IDR 350,000 to IDR 750,000. Lovayana feesl confident about selling at such prices as his phone cases are artworks and the first of their kind in Indonesia and maybe the world. Lovayana is not developing this business alone. Alone but works with young people from his village who help with sales and design to grow this business. The themes depicted in his engraved casing usually feature gods like Ganesha, Barong and others. “We can also make customized order. We take pre-orders as it takes about a week to make”, he explained. In order to improve the economy of the carving artists, Lovayana implements a profit sharing system where carving artists get 50 percent of the selling price. With such a promising income, young people will more likely want to pursue this profession, thus the Balinese art of carving will be preserved. Lovayana leaves it to the artists to obtain the wood for these cases, which is said is often salvaged from Marga’s furniture and building carvers’ scraps “So, in addition to preserving our culture, it also preserves the environment by maximizing the use of unused wood”, he added. Once the carving is done, IBP/Wira Sanjiwani Lovayana then puts in rubber lining to protect the handphones from getting scratch when the wooden cases are mounted. These handphone cases have drawn interest from buyers across Indonesia as wel as customers from abroad. Unfortunately expensive shipping costs make export less appealing for small scale orders. “In the future, we hope to cooperate with a foundations in Hong Kong. So, the orders can be in large quantities with a consignment sale system”, added Lovayana. (kmb24)

In Bali, five school days a week not mandatory
DENPASAR - The full-days or five days of school a week program has not become mandatory in Bali. Nevertheless, some schools have submitted requests from the Bali Education Agency to be able to implemented the five-day school week. “For the schools that are ready, it’s, ok, but for those that are not, it should not be forced. Actually there hasn’t been any issue about this”, said Head of the Bali Education Agency, TIA Kusuma Wardhani, when asked for her confirmation on Monday (Aug. 14). TIA confirmed that some school shad already started implemented the full-day policy but admitted that she had not personally investigated the matter first hand. Given that the matter is still being discussed in the central government, she will coordinate things as need be. “I think there are only one or two schools in Denpasar that are running this program. Outside Denpasar, we have not recorded the numbers because it has not
become a national agenda. Later on, the rules will be set forth in a presidential regulation and this does not have to be implemented by all schools as conditions vary” she added. If the schools are ready, continued TIA, then they can implement this system for character education. “With five working days, character education is expected to be taught optimally to children. However, when talking about character education there are three components involved namely the family, school and community”, she said. . “Beyond school hours children become the full responsibility of their family”, she said. “Today, we tragically lost a member of our crew while filming ‘Deadpool’,” Reynolds, a native of Vancouver, said in a message on his social media platforms. Vancouver police confirmed the death on Monday of the stuntwoman on the set of 20th Century Fox’s superhero movie “Deadpool 2” but gave no further details and did not release her name. Local media said the woman appeared to lose control of the motorbike, which drove off the set and through the window of a building across the street. The film is a sequel to the 2016 R-rated comedy “Deadpool,” starring Reynolds as the foul-mouthed Marvel superhero Deadpool.
