LOS ANGELES - Veteran musician Lionel Richie, hiphop star and actor LL Cool J and Cuban-American singer and actress Gloria Estefan will receive the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors this year, CBS network said Thursday.

The 40th Kennedy Center Honors, to air on CBS on Dec. 26, is one of the highest awards in American culture, celebrating lifetime achievements through the performing arts. Other 2017 honorees are television writer-producer Norman Lear and dancer, choreographer and actress Carmen de Lavallade.

New ‘Game of Thrones’ episode leaks online through HBO partner

THE unaired fourth episode of the new season of HBO’s hit series “Game of Thrones” has been leaked online, the premium channel’s distribution partner Star India said on Friday.

“We take this breach very seriously and have immediately initiated forensic investigations at our and the technology partner’s end to swiftly determine the cause. This is a grave issue and we are taking appropriate legal remedial action” a Star India spokesperson said in a statement.

Star India is a subsidiary of Twenty-First Century Fox Inc. The leak of the episode, titled “The Spoils of War,” was separate from a hack on HBO that was disclosed earlier this week, HBO said in a statement. In that incident, the company’s chairman, Richard Plepler, told employees in a Monday email seen by Reuters that the hackers had stolen “proprietary information,” including some programming.

Entertainment Weekly reported on Monday that hackers stole 1.5 terrabytes of data, including two unaired episodes of the “Game of Thrones” series.

HBO is owned by Time Warner Inc, which is waiting for regulatory approval to sell itself to AT&T Inc in a $85.4 billion deal. (rtr)

“Lucifer” heat wave holds Italy, eastern Europe in fiery grip

SARAJEVO/BELGRADE - Swathes of southern and eastern Europe sweltered in temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius (104°F) on Friday in a heat wave nicknamed “Lucifer” that has fanned forest fires, triggered weather warning alerts and damaged crops. Italy and the Balkans were worst affected, though areas as far north as southern Poland also basked in abnormally hot temperatures, and European weather hub Meteoalarm issued its highest grade “red” warnings for 10 countries.

At least two people have died from the heat - one in Romania and one in Poland - and many more have been taken to hospital suffering from sunstroke and other heatrelated conditions. In Albania, 300 firefighters and soldiers struggled to contain as many as 75 forest fires and the country asked the European Union for emergency help. “The health of the grapes is severely tested by this weather,” Petrini wrote, adding that growers ran the risk of finding the fruit “cooked by the sun and the burning heat”.

High salt need, farmers even threatened to go extinct

SEMARAPURA - The need for salt for consumption as well as business such as for salted fish is large enough. Amid such conditions, the number of salt farmers is getting fewer, even threatened with extinction as happened to Kusamba village, Dawan.

No younger generations are willing to continue their business in this coastal area.

A few years ago salt farmers reached 50 families. But in harmony with the passage of time, many are turning to other professions considered to be capable of providing more certain incomes. Now, only 17 families remain to survive and they mostly consist of old people.

“Most of us have turned to more promising professions. So, the remaining ones are of old age. It is hard to find out another job, while the younger generation is not going to pursue it.

Apparently, we are the surviving ones belonging to the last generation,” said a local salt farmer, Nyoman Renu.

Salt production, he continued, indeed tends to fluctuate.

In good weather, he can produce 15 to 20 kilograms. However, when the weather is bad, production drops dramatically, even nil. However, behind the relatively stable selling price, this farm can be a livelihood for survival. “Sometimes the production is down, but if seen, this farming could become a breadwinner,” he said.

Such condition is also justified by another farmer, Dewa Ketut Candra. This salt farming is no longer favored by younger generation. They prefer to look for other jobs to urban areas. “Now, there are no successors,” he explained. (kmb45)

To get such a leader, Bima Putra appealed to the Balinese people to be selective and not materialistic in their choice. Balinese people must know the track record of the future leader of Bali, whether they are experienced in government, have commitment to defending the Island of Bali and will side with the society they lead, and

be clean from corruption.

“We at Sekar Forum have also set up a review team for the criteria of Bali’s leaders in the future, where the members consist of the academicians, senior figures including those invited from the brotherhood of all other districts / city across Bali. This is our strategic measure to finalize leaders as what we and the people of Bali want in the future in maintaining the sustainability of Bali,” he said.

He also hoped that future leaders of Bali could practice politics

well, courteously and properly.

They should never do everything for the sake of politics to attract the attention so that the people will choose them.

“Anyone who will go forward for the gubernatorial election in 2018, if they have complied with the criteria of Bali leadership, we certainly support them. Otherwise, we as Balinese people will ask to pull out from the Bali’s leader candidacy. We also want a Balinese leader that can keep and sustain Bali,” he added. (win)

Pertamini named illegal, Industry and trade agency has no authority to prohibit

BANGLI - The existence of business selling fuel in retail is increasingly mushrooming in the community both in urban areas and rural areas. Lately, this business of selling fuel in retail is growing.

Some of the merchants no longer use bottles but a gasoline casting tool resembling at petrol station called as Pertamini.

According to the Head of the Bangli Industry and Trade Agency, Nengah Sudibya, the fuel sales business using Pertamini including those on sale in bottle is illegal.

Nevertheless, his agency cannot prohibit the business. “The authority to ban them lies in Pertamina,” he said recently.

Sudibya said that his agency can

only give an appeal that Pertamini is illegal. And all this time, the appeal has been delivered to the merchants. Besides, he has also appealed to the refueling station to always put priority to consumers coming with vehicle rather than those bringing a jerrican.

In the meantime, when asked about re-calibration of gas station,

Sudibya said it has been routinely carried out by his agency. It is one of the conditions that must be met by gas stations in order to be able to get fuel supply.

In performing the calibration, he admitted that his agency cannot do it independently. The industry and trade agency of Bangli still has to cooperate with its counterpart in

Buleleng due to limited human resources and facilities owned.

“Going forward to be a region of measurement compliance, we will do calibration to all measurement tools including the water and electric meter as well. It is meant that all consumers can get standard measurement tool,” he said. (kmb40)

Salt becomes classic problem

Farmers need land and use of technology

RIO DE JANEIRO - From the architect. The design of the Museum is inspired by the Carioca culture and through its architecture, explores the relationship between the city and the natural environment. The Museum includes 5,000 square meters of temporary and permanent exhibition space, as well as a 7,600 square meter plaza that wraps around the structure and extends along the dock. The building features large overhangs 75 meters in length on the side facing the square and 45 meters in length on the side facing the sea. These features highlight the extension of the Museum from the dock into the bay.

upstairs, and features a roof 10 meters high with panoramic views of Guanabara Bay. The total height of the building is limited to 18 meters, which protects the view from the bay of Sao Bento Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cantilevering roof with its large mobile wings and the facade structure expand almost the full length of the pier emphasizing the extension into the Guanabara Bay, while minimizing the building’s width. A reflection pool surrounding the building on the outside—used to filter water that is being pumped from the bay and released back in from the end of the pier— gives visitors the impression that the Museum is floating. “The

idea is that the building feels ethereal, almost floating on the sea, like a ship, a bird or a plant. Because of the changing nature of the exhibits, we have introduced an archetypal structure inside the building. This simplicity allows for the functional versatility of the Museum, able to accommodate conferences or act as a research space,” said Mr. Calatrava. The building is orientated in the north-south direction, off-center from the pier’s longitudinal eastwest axis, maximizing a continuous landscaping feature containing beautiful gardens, paths and leisure areas along the southern length of the pier. A park walkway around the perimeter of the pier will allow visi-

tors to circumnavigate the Museum, while enjoying panoramic views of the Sao Bento Monastery and the Guanabara Bay. The lower level contains functional and technical rooms, such as the Museum’s administrative offices, educational facilities, research space, an auditorium, a museum store, a restaurant, lobby, archives, storage and a delivery area. Located on the Maua Pier, the Museum of Tomorrow is part of a larger revitalization of Porto Maravilha, the port neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro. The project allows for better integration between the Port District and the city center and is helping to make this area one of

the most attractive neighborhoods in the city. The building “is the result of a consistent dialogue. The building was built to be a museum for the future, and an educational unit,” said Mr. Calatrava. The building features sustainable design, incorporating natural energy and light sources. Water from the bay is used to regulate the temperature inside the building; this source also supplies water for the Museum’s surrounding reflecting pools. The Museum also uses photovoltaic solar panels, which can be adjusted to optimize the angle of the sun’s rays throughout the day and generate solar energy to supply the building. (IBP/net)

DENPASAR — Salt issue has become a problem for years and even for dozens of years in Indonesia. On the other hand, Indonesia is an archipelagic country having the largest beach. Thus, Indonesia should have no problem in the salt matters.

According to an economic observer and professor at the Faculty of Economics, Udayana University, Prof. Dr. I Wayan Ramantha, the problem is the need between consumption salt and industrial salt that should be met with domestic production.

Domestic production met by the potential of beach and so forth is very high, other than for tourism purposes. “However so far, our human resources and technology to produce salt consumption is still very low,” he said. Thus, there are two problems faced by Indonesia namely the human resources and technology.

He hoped that in the future the government can help improve the productivity of farmers by facilitating them. The potential of traditional salt in West Bali especially in West Buleleng and Kusamba, Klungkung, just needs to be improved. “At least, their production can supply local needs,” he said.

He hoped there will be a focus of coaching by relevant institutions to that way.

By that way, it is expected not to import salt. In the meantime, the low price of salt at IDR 500 per kg at the farmer level makes the human resources less interested in pursuing salt farming. According to him, it happens because of economic scale.

When the current productivity of

conventional salt farmers can only produce 10-100 kg per day, certainly it is not economical. However, if farmers produce in large-scale, with the help of technology and larger number of labor, eventually farmers can increase their average productivity per year.

“For example, it‘s enough to employ three people and the use of technology like water pump instead of carrying the water manually as well as the use of technology to heat in tiered stages. Thus, during rainy season they can still produce with greenhouses and so forth,” he explained.

Ultimately, with such simple technology they can get IDR 200,000-IDR 500,000 per day.

Automatically they will be interested. If many people are interested in working on this sector, their productivity will increase. After the productivity increases, for the government, it will save foreign exchange, and societies can play their role.

Head of the Bali Fishery and Maritime Affairs, I Made Gunaja, said that in addition to weather constraints, the land area also becomes a problem to salt farmers in Bali.

In reality, the land in Bali is said to have undergone land conversion into tourism purposes such as hotels and restaurants. However, he admitted that his agency does not have any data related to the changes in land function of salt farmers into restaurants or hotels.

“However, based on the facts in the field, there is salt farming land having been converted into a hotel. For example, it happens on Kelating Beach, Tabanan,” he said. (kmb42)

Enliven up Sanur International Kite Festival 2017

DENPASAR — A total of 64 participants from 19 countries and 58 participants from various cities in Indonesia showed off their capability at the opening of the Sanur International Kite Festival 2017 on Saturday (Aug. 5).

This opening was carried out by Mayor of Denpasar, Ida Bagus Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra, marked with the flight of dragon kites on Mertasari Beach Sanur.

In the afternoon, it was performed a colossal puppet performance in the air featuring a play with the theme Bhinneka Tunggal Ika or Unity in Diversity.

On that occasion, Rai Mantra highly appreciated to various creative activities in Denpasar city such as the Sanur Village Festival assembled with various activities, including the Sanur International Kite Festival regularly held every year. “In addition to supporting the cultural conservation, the kites also have an economic impact. Moreover, this event can bring in the rare angon abroad,” he said.

Such a festival is hoped to continuously be developed and maintained as a medium for cultural strengthening. Kite as a cultural attraction having existed since the past time is expected to keep sustainable in the

hands of creative young people. On that occasion, Rai Mantra embedded a gold pin to the senior figure of rare angon (kite flyers) namely A.A. Rai Giri Bunadhi, Si Nyoman Adnyana, (late) Ketut Mona and Priyono.

Committee Chairman of the Sanur International Kite Festival, Kadek Dwi Armika, added that this festival is part of the BritAma Sanur Village Festival denoting one of the kite circuits awaited by the world’s masters. Approximately 2,000 kites are flown throughout the festival. In addition to featuring traditional kites like the bebean (fish-shaped), pecukan (leaf-shaped) and janggan (bird-shaped), this festival also presents creative and contemporary kites.

On Saturday morning until afternoon were flown 500 kites and resumed at night by flying 34 kites in a puppet show session in the sky. “Performance of the colossal puppet show in the sky featured the theme Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, denoting the motto of the unitary state of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI) taken from Sutasoma psalmody written by Mpu Tantular,” he said.

Chairman of LPM Kuta, Gusti Agung Made Agung, explained on Friday (Aug. 4) that Kuta SeaSandLand is one of the tourist attractions held coinciding with the moment of the Indonesia’s Independence Day celebration. In addition to the spirit of unity, the event is designed in the form of Beach Festival to boost domestic and foreign tourist visits.

Kuta SeaSandLand has an ideology uniting the three main elements of Indonesia’s homeland. Sea describes the maritime power of Indonesia, having long been the pride of this archipelago.

Sand represents the diversity of the archipelago, but remains an integral part of Indonesia. In the meantime, Land represents where the people of Indonesia uphold unity as the root of the nation appreciating the values of diversity, and loving the homeland of Indonesia.

He said that on August 15 will be filled with an archipelagic parade that will involve 14 hamlets across Kuta and traditional arts of the archipelago along the coast of Kuta. In addition, this event will also be enlivened by a series of artists such as RIF Band, Double-T, Soul Id and Wildeones. The most interesting will also be displayed a fragmentary show entitled Pasih Prahu and the performance of the native works to Indonesia by Kinarya-GSP (Guruh Soekarno Putra).

Suu Kyi’s man in Yangon under fire over transit deal with China

SYDNEY - The U.S. Navy and Marine Corps suspended their search and rescue efforts on Sunday for three U.S. Marines missing after their aircraft crashed into the sea off Australia’s northeast coast a day earlier, the U.S. Marine Corps said.

The Marine Corps said they had shifted to recovery efforts in coordination with the Australian Defence Force, which could last several months, and had notified the next-of-kin of the three missing Marines.

“The transition comes after teams led continuous sustained search efforts supported by aircraft and ships,” the III Marine Expeditionary Force, based in Okinawa, Japan, said.

“As the sea state permits, recovery efforts will be conducted to further search, assess and survey the area ...,” they said in a statement.

The U.S. Marines have described the incident involving the MV22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft as a “mishap” and said it was under investigation.

Ospreys have been involved in incidents resulting in deaths or injuries in recent years.

Twenty-three other personnel aboard the aircraft had been rescued. Australian emergency officials said one person had been taken to hospital in Rockhampton in northeastern Queensland state but gave no other details.

“All other personnel are accounted for and safe,” the III Marine Expeditionary Force said on Twitter.

The incident happened off the coast of Shoalwater Bay in Queensland at about 4 p.m. local time on Saturday (0600 GMT), the Marine Corps said. They called off the search at about 3 a.m. on Sunday (1700 GMT Saturday). (rtr)

YANGON - Aung San Suu Kyi’s first major infrastructure project could hardly be more visible - hundreds of new yellow buses now plying the streets of Yangon in what her ruling party hopes will be a potent symbol of how it is transforming peoples’ lives.

But two deals to import 2,000 buses from China estimated at more than $100 million have caused an unusual rift within her National League for Democracy (NLD), with regional lawmakers questioning its cost and accusing Yangon’s chief minister Phyo Min Thein, a Suu Kyi protégé, of cronyism and a lack of accountability.

“Phyo Min Thein’s government lacks transparency,” said Kyaw Zay Ya, a Yangon NLD lawmaker. “The image of the government will be damaged if he doesn’t change.”

The deal, struck with Chinese companies and a businessman with ties to the junta that ruled Myanmar for decades, has also soured relations with the West, according to diplomats.

While there is no evidence that any laws were broken in the awarding of the contracts, Roland Kobia, the EU ambassador to Myanmar, complained in a private letter to

Commerce Minister Than Myint of a lack of transparency in public procurements.

“Currently, the domestic economy remains dominated by a small number of domestic and regional actors whose long-standing practices prevent fair competition,” Kobia wrote in the June dated letter, seen by Reuters. The letter did not specifically refer to the bus deal.

Although the Chinese buses were about half the price of international rivals, engineers who inspected them for Myanmar predict that they will wear out and need to be replaced far sooner than the international standard.

Phyo Min Thein declined several interview requests from Reuters.

He and other ministers have previously defended the deal, saying the government-to-government agreement with China offered a discount price and express delivery.

EU ambassador Kobia said in a statement in response to Reuters’ questions that “many European actors stand ready to work in Myanmar, but more needs to be done to give them a fair chance to compete for contracts”.

He was referring to the broader issue of transparency in public procurements, the EU said.

Myanmar’s commerce ministry spokesman Khin Maung Lwin declined to comment.

When Suu Kyi swept to power in an electoral landslide in 2015, analysts predicted Western companies, whose government’s had cheered on the transition to democracy in the Southeast Asian nation that began in 2011, would flock to the country.

But the Yangon bus deal underscores that Suu Kyi’s backers in the West have grown disillusioned as Myanmar increasingly prefers to do business with China. (rtr)

BUSINESS BUMPY ROAD China’s goods trade surplus for July, due on Tuesday, looks set to top $46 billion, according to a Reuters poll of economists. That would be the second highest this year. Although the surplus has fallen sharply year on year over the first half of 2017, against the United States it has increased 6.5 percent.

“We see a bumpy road ahead for the trade relationship between the two countries”, said Yang Zhao, Nomura’s chief China economist. “But it is unlikely that the two nations will enter a true trade war.”

Part of the reason for China’s bigger surplus with the U.S. this year is the better performance of the world’s no. 1 economy, Zhao said.

German figures also due on Tuesday are expected to show its goods trade surplus widened too, to 21 billion euros ($24.7 billion) in June from 20.3 billion in May, according to the Reuters poll.

Germany had the world’s biggest current account surplus in 2016 at $289 billion and has been under pressure to boost domestic demand to lessen its reliance on exports - not least from European Union peers that want to raise their own competitiveness.

Berlin can point to the fact its trade surplus has actually fallen 2 percent in the 12 months to May compared with the same period a year ago, but that pace of progress may not be enough to spare it criticism from the United States. “I suspect it’s a lot of rhetoric at the moment,” said Dixon at Commerzbank. “But that doesn’t mean to say we can dismiss the risk.”(rtr)

The United States posted a much smaller goods trade deficit than expected for June, helped by an improvement in exports.

But this may be eclipsed by figures from China and Germany due in coming days.

Philippines’ Duterte warns miners: “I will tax you to death”

MANILA - Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday said he wanted to stop exporting mineral resources and might close the mining sector completely and tax miners “to death” if damage to the environment persisted. “The protection of the environment must be made a priority ahead of mining and all other activities that adversely affect one way or another,” Duterte said in his State of the Nation address, his second since assuming power in June last year. “This policy is non-negotiable.”

The Philippines is the world’s biggest supplier of nickel ore and also among the top producers of copper and gold. However, the sector contributes less than 1 percent to the country’s economy, based on data from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau. The country’s miners have been under fire by Duterte’s government for alleged violations that include building mines in prohibited areas like watersheds.

Duterte said miners have “considerably neglected” their duty to protect the environment and to repair damage done by mining. “You have to come up with a substitute, either spend to restore the virginity of the source or I will tax you to death,” he said. Duterte also said he wanted all mineral resources extracted from the country to be processed domestically before being exported.

“I call on our industrialists, inves-

tors, commercial barons to put up factories and manufacturing establishments right here in the Philippines to process our raw materials into finished products,” he said.

Previous governments in the Philippines called for more domestic processing of raw minerals but the country’s Congress has not enacted appropriate laws. The Philippines became the world’s top nickel ore exporter after Indonesia banned exports of unprocessed ore in 2014, a move meant to spur the development of higher value smelting industries.

The country has four mineral processing plants, two for gold and two for nickel. But most of its metallic mineral output is shipped abroad unprocessed.

“If possible, we shall put a stop to the extraction and exportation of our mineral resources...for processing abroad and importing them back

to the Philippines in the form of consumer goods at prices twice or thrice the value of the raw materials,” Duterte said. To encourage smelting investments, the government needs to provide incentives to investors and subsidize power costs, which are high in the Philippines, mining industry executives have said.

Duterte’s first appointment as Environment Minister, Regina Lopez, was dismissed in May by the Philippine Congress but she led a 10-month crackdown on the industry, highlighted by the closure and suspension of 26 of the country’s 41 mines.

She also imposed a ban on openpit mining and demanded a bigger government share in mining revenues, but her orders are now under review, according to a senior official of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau.(rtr)

After that, the gamelan composition played is Tabuh Pamungkah used when commencing to play the klayon to finish of the klayon.

Then, it is resumed with paguneman where the puppet is stabbed accompanied by gamelan composition entitled Tulang Lindung. After stabbing the puppets, it is continued with gamelan entitled Panyacah Parwa in the form of alas arum.

When the puppet is told to walk or move, it will use angkat-angkatan gamelan music. Moreover, when the puppet is crying it uses special mesem gamelan composition for slant-eyed puppets. For the puppet with glowering eyes, it will use rebong gamelan music and during

wartime it will use bebatelan.

“Thus, in once staging from the beginning to finish, it will use approximately 10 gamelan compositions with an average duration of two minutes except for the Tabuh Petegak whose duration is approximately 15 minutes,” he said.

In ngaben or cremation ceremony, though the carrying of bade tower has been accompanied by baleganjur gamelan music, it will also use the puppet gender. An artist and lecturer at the ISI Denpasar, I Nyoman Astita, said although in terms of the form it is not different from other gamelan instrument, the gender of puppet

is indeed the beginning or inspiration of the iron or copper gamelan instrument fastened or tied in such a way by using a rope to float and generate a battier tone when compared to other old gamelan types commonly put on the pedestal.

When playing, the gamelan players are using both hands where left hand plays the tone or the main melody while right hand play in makotekan way namely forming series of rhythm tone of the two gamelan instruments.

Furthermore, he said that playing the puppet gender must be in pair or two pieces because gamelan play in the right hand of both players will produce a different pattern where if gamelan artist plays nyangsih, the partner will play pepolosan.

Thus, playing in pairs will result in a rhythm that integrates the sangsih and papolosan known as makotekan.

“The advantages of this puppet gender to me is in terms of technique and playing technique that are fairly sophisticated and

complicated because at the same time two hands will play individually or counter point with the techniques and even a different beat can produce a different rhythm as well,” he said.

He added that in general, Balinese gamelan instrument using resonator in the form of bamboo underneath as a sound repeater will usually be set so that the pair can result in ngumbang-ngisep or waving tones. So, when the pair is played even though one tone only will produce a vibrating or waving sound. Similar thing is also found in the puppet gender, so in addition to being able to makotekan the use of a pair of puppet gender is also aimed to produce a waving sound.

United Nations bans key N.Korea exports over missile tests

UNITED NATIONS - The United Nations Security Council unanimously imposed new sanctions on North Korea on Saturday that could slash by a third the Asian state’s $3 billion annual export revenue over its two intercontinental ballistic missile tests in July.

The U.S.-drafted resolution bans North Korean exports of coal, iron, iron ore, lead, lead ore and seafood. It also prohibits countries from increasing the current numbers of North Korean laborers working abroad, bans new joint ventures with North Korea and any new investment in current joint ventures.

“We should not fool ourselves into thinking we have solved the problem.

Not even close. The North Korean threat has not left us, it is rapidly growing more dangerous,” U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley told the council.

“Further action is required. The United States is taking and will continue to take prudent defensive measures to protect ourselves and our allies,” she said. Washington would continue annual joint military exercises with South Korea, Haley said.

North Korea has accused the United States and South Korea of escalating tensions by conducting military drills.

Liu also urged North Korea to “cease taking actions that might further escalate tensions.”

Venezuela’s pro-gov’t assembly fires dissident prosecutor CARACAS - Venezuela’s new legislative superbody removed the country’s chief prosecutor and ordered her to stand trial in its first session on Saturday, confirming opposition fears that it would use its powers to root out critics of President Nicolas Maduro.

The prosecutor, Luisa Ortega, had become Maduro’s main challenger from within the ruling socialist movement since the start of opposition street protests in April, which have left more than 120 people dead as rock-throwing protesters were met by state security forces firing rubber bullets and water cannon.

Ortega accused Maduro of human rights abuses and of fudging the results of last weekend’s election of the new 545-member constituent assembly. The opposition, in control of the country’s traditional congress, boycotted the vote, meaning that all candidates for the new body were Maduro allies.

His loyalist Supreme Court sent a letter to the assembly announcing its indictment of Ortega, accusing her of “alleged commission of serious misconduct”, without

the policies of late President Hugo Chavez, who put Venezuela on its socialist path when he was first elected nearly two decades ago.

It will hold is sessions in the same legislative complex as the traditional congress, which could potentially be dissolved. For now, the two bodies are set to hold sessions in parallel, separated by an ornate cobblestone courtyard. (rtr)

Taiwan fumes as Indonesia sends fraud suspects to China

TAIPEI - Taiwan has protested to Indonesia for sending more than 100 telecoms fraud suspects, including 22 Taiwan nationals, to China, the self-ruled island said on Thursday, the latest in a series of such deportations. Taiwan, an island China considers a wayward province, has protested to Vietnam, Cambodia and Kenya for doing the same thing.

Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia and Kenya, like all but a shrinking handful of countries in the world, adhere to Beijing’s “one China” policy and do not recognise diplomatic rival Taiwan, whose official name is the Republic of China.

China has suspended dialogue with Taipei since June, a month after pro-independence Tsai Ing-wen took office as Taiwan’s president, because Tsai has refused to accept Beijing’s “one China” principle.

Indonesia sent 143 suspects to either the Chinese cities of Chengdu or Tianjin on Thursday, the Taiwan foreign ministry said in a statement. Indonesia had cooperated with China to arrest the 143 suspects on Saturday, the statement said. “We request a diplomatic consul visit as well as assistance in identifying the people, and urge Indonesia to handle this justly in accordance with the law as well

as to provide channels for judicial relief to the Taiwan nationals,” the ministry said.

Taiwan also emphasized that China and Taiwan should cooperate to investigate cross-border crime. “But China forcibly sending Taiwan nationals to the Chinese mainland completely ignores goodwill and appeals from our side...and impacts the healthy development of cross-straits relations,” Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council said.

China’s foreign ministry did not comment on the case on Thursday.

Indonesia’s immigration office spokesman Agung Sampurno said all of the 143 suspects were Chinese nationals. Authorities in the Southeast Asian country also had three Taiwanese and one Malaysian in custody related to the fraud case, but they were still under investigation, Sampurno added.

China has never renounced the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control. China’s Nationalists fled to the island after losing the Chinese civil war with the Communists in 1949. Last year, Beijing thanked Kenya for deporting five people from Taiwan to China as part of a crackdown on telecoms fraud, and urged Taiwan to support the action after its foreign ministry protested. Tanjung Priok operates normally despite strike: Minister

JAKARTA - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi has said that Tanjung Priok Port has operated normally, including exportimport activities, despite the workers’ strike at Jakarta International Container Terminal (JICT). The strike is planned to be held from August 3 to 10, 2017. “Alhamdulillah (Thank God), the port operations ran well. We hope that it could continue to operate,” Budi said, after inspecting the Greater Jakarta Light Rail Transit (LRT) project near Jagorawi toll road in Jakarta, on Friday.

The minister noted that workers demands would be discussed with the companys management, and the ministry did not have the authority to intervene. The ministry assured that the port could operate normally despite the problem, he asserted. “Therefore, we have communicated with stakeholders through harbormaster. There is a cooperation between JICT team and companies there,” he added.

Budi disclosed that he had not received reports on stagnation in Tanjung Priok Port and complaints from companies until the second day of the strike. The minister has called on companies to submit reports to the ministry if they found difficulties because of the workers’ strike. “I will be all out to improve services in vital facilities. It is the governments task to handle this.

We guarantee that it (services) would run normally,” he remarked.

Budi has also called on the JICT labor union to stop its action and focus on public services. “I called on the labor union to stop the strike. This is vital facility. We should not go on strike,” he added.

More than 650 workers of the JICT at North Jakartas Tanjung Priok port have gone on strike since Thursday, demanding the balance of their bonuses, which they claim had been reduced by 42 percent. The bonuses were cut after the companys profit before tax (PBT) dropped from US$66.3 million in 2015 to $44.2 million in 2016. Workers have also demanded a rescue for JICT as national asset that would be managed by local workers. (ant)

Gatlin stuns Bolt to win 100m world title

LONDON - Justin Gatlin ruined Usain Bolt’s farewell party when the 35-year-old American won the world 100 metres title on Saturday, beating the Jamaican superstar into third and sparking a chorus of boos from a London crowd unhappy with his doping past.

MANGUPURA - This beautiful temple is located on a plateau of Kerta village, Petang, Badung. It is approximately 30 km north of Denpasar. Amazing natural scenery can be seen from the temple courtyard.

Pucak Tedung has three courtyards. The first is the highest one or the innermost courtyard (jeroan).

This area hosts the main buildings.

The second one is middle courtyard (jaba tengah) consisting of bale kulkul (wooden split drum tower) and Panggungan pavilion and the lowest is outermost courtyard (jaba sisi). In the meantime, in the

northwest of the Pucak Tedung Temple, there is a small temple called Sekartaji Temple with only two buildings, namely the shrine of Batur Sari and Paruman Pancaresi.

Existence of this temple is closely associated with Pucak Tedung. Literally, the Pucak Tedung is derived from two words. In Balinese, pucak means the highest point of plateau, while tedung is a kind of sacred umbrella. So far, the etymology on the name of Pucak Tedung has not been found in any palm-leaf manuscripts or chronicles. Mythologically, it is said that in the past there was a leader of Hinduism named Danghyang Nirartha or Bhatara Sakti Wawu Rawuh made a pilgrimage from Pulaki to eastern part of the Island of Bali. Among his journey, he took a rest on the

highest point of a plateau (Balinese people usually call it pucak). When he resumed the journey, his umbrella was left behind on the peak.

Hence, the plain is called Pucak Tedung and the temple established is called Pucak Tedung. During the glory of Mengwi kingdom around the seventeenth century whose territory got to the region of North Badung, the supervision or maintenance of Pucak Tedung was submitted to Carangsari Palace. Then, Carangsari Palace handed over the supervision and maintenance to Kerta Palace. In the seventeenth century, Carangsari Palace developed its territory where an offspring named I Gusti Ngurah Rai moved to Petang village and settled there. Since Kerta Palace had no descendant, the supervision and

maintenance of Pucak Tedung was then submitted to Petang Palace, denoting a fraction of Carangsari Palace. In the meantime, paraphernalia such as holy bell was still kept in Kerta Palace.

In the administration of I Gusti Ngurah Rai at Petang village, there was division of the territory of customary village and supporting devotees (pangemong) of the Pucak Tedung Temple. They are the Sulangai village, Munduk Damping customary village, Lipah customary village, Sandakan customary village, Angantiga customary village, Batulantang customary village, Kerta customary village and Petang customary village.

Aside from the customary village communities mentioned above, during the temple festival

or piodalan at Pucak Tedung many pilgrims from outside Petang subdistrict also come to say prayers to the temple. Every temple in Bali has piodalan or temple festival organized differently. There are temples whose festival fall once a year (based on Balinese lunar year) or every six months or 210 days (pawukon year). Piodalan at Pucak Tedung is conducted every six months, falling on Saturday Kliwon Krulut or Tumpek Krulut.

On the piodalan, sanctified effigy of the deity is carried in melasti (purificatory rite) procession to Beji Temple. After returning from the Beji Temple, it takes a rest at Sekartaji Temple. Literally, this sojourn or short break is just like tidying up clothes before entering a house. (kmb)

What was meant to be a glorious celebration of the departure of the sport’s greatest showman turned into a condemnation of its biggest pantomime villain as Gatlin, twice banned for drug offences, rolled back the years to win a second world title 12 years after his first and 13 after claiming Olympic 100m gold.

As so often before Bolt made a terrible start but for once could not make it up as Christian Coleman, the 21-year-old American who beat him in the semi-finals, looked set for victory.

But Gatlin, who stumbled at the death to lose the 2015 world final to Bolt by a hundredth of a second, on this occasion timed his surge and dip to perfection to win in 9.92 seconds.

Coleman, who has run over 40 races this year but turned professional only a few weeks ago, took silver in 9.94.

Bolt, straining every sinew, fought all the way to the line but the pace and grace that took him to his world record of 9.58 eight years ago has withered with age and perennial injury battles and this time he ran out of track.

“It’s just one of those things,” Bolt said.

“My start is killing me. Normally, it gets better during the rounds but it didn’t come together.”

When the results flashed up on the giant screen the crowd immediately began repeating the booing with which Gatlin’s name had been greeted since the heats on Friday.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, his first response was to put his finger to his lips to indicate silence. The crowd reacted by chanting Bolt’s name and the Jamaican hugged Gatlin and told him he did not deserve the disrespect.

“I tuned it out (the boos) through the rounds and stayed the course. I did what I had to do,” said Gatlin, who served a four-year ban from 2006 for a second doping offence - which he

“The people who love me are here cheering for me and cheering at home.

“I needed to be in a better place after 30 metres but I just wasn’t in that super-shape I needed to be in,” said Bolt, who turns 31 this month.

“I gave it my best shot but my body’s telling me it’s time to go.”

He still has another chance to add to the medal tally in the 4x100m relay next week - when he will be desperate to avenge Satur-

day’s defeat in what, if the Americans manage to get the baton round, should be a last-leg showdown with Gatlin.

Also in the U.S. team will be Coleman, who looked set for a remarkable victory running in the lane alongside Bolt until the man 14 years his senior snatched it from lane eight of nine.

Coleman, however, was not about to complain.

“Both of us have done well, I’m really happy for him to get the gold and I’m delighted with silver,” he said.

Of Bolt, he added: “He’s a man who has taken the sport to a whole new level.

LONDON - South Africa’s Luvo Manyonga said he was “over the moon” after winning the World Championship long jump title on Saturday, making up for the disappointment of missing out on an Olympic gold in Rio. Manyonga, who only returned to formal competition last year after overcoming a drug addiction, led the final from the second round with a leap of 8.48 metres - the third best mark of 2017.

The 26-year-old held off the challenge of American Jarrion Lawson, who in his first senior championships jumped a seasonbest 8.44 in the final round to claim silver.

The bronze was taken by Manyonga’s compatriot Ruswahl Samaai, the leader in the Diamond League standings, who jumped 8.32.

“This gold medal makes me feel over the moon. I have been praying to get this gold medal,” Manyonga said.

“The world record is my next goal. Ruswahl and me are pushing each other through the events. I am the best in the world - this sounds great.”

Manyonga, a junior champion in 2010, suffered numerous personal setbacks in recent years.

Coming from a township just outside of Cape Town, he was given an 18-month suspension

in 2012 for testing positive for the recreational drug tik - the local variant of crystal methamphetamine.

The South African admitted previously that at one point he felt about “five percent away” from death.

After missing out on gold in Rio with his final effort ruled a no-jump, the relief at his win in London was evident as he fell backwards into the sandpit and made an angel imprint.

“I do not feel like thinking about the last attempt in 2016, this brings back bad memories.

It does not matter anymore because I have the gold medal now.” (rtr)

PARIS — The star was missing but the party went ahead successfully at the Parc des Princes on Saturday as Paris Saint-Germain won its French league season-opener. Without Neymar on the pitch, Edinson Cavani and Javier Pastore took on the scoring responsibilities to ensure PSG got a winning start by beating promoted Amiens 2-0. It was only PSG’s fourth win in its last 12 season-opening games in Ligue 1.

World-record signing Neymar was ineligible to play because of paperwork issues and PSG coach Unai Emery opted for a 4-3-3 formation with Pastore and Angel Di Maria supporting Cavani. Just like the fans, Neymar watched from the stands. The French league did not receive his international transfer certificate from the Spanish federation before Friday night’s deadline, despite his 222 million euro ($262 million) move from Barcelona being completed the previous day.

“All I know is that the club did everything to have the player’s transfer ratified,” Emery said. “He prepared for the game with the group, we waited until the very end. I don’t know if Spain did everything, but PSG did all it could,” Neymar did not play but he gave fans something to cheer about during his official presentation before the game. Neymar was unveiled at a ceremony involving fireworks and did a lap of honor.

The 25-year-old Brazil international is now expected to make his debut on Aug. 13 against Guingamp.

“With Neymar we can get bigger,” said Emery, whose main objectives this season are to win the Champions League and to regain the French league title his players relinquished to Monaco last season. Hired a few weeks before Neymar this summer, Brazil defender Dani Alves was given his first start, while Alphonse Areola was prefered to Kevin Trapp in goal.

Amiens has the smallest budget of the league with

25 million euros — not much more than a tenth of what PSG paid for Neymar — and it showed. Amiens gave away possession immediately after kickoff with a long ball that went out of bounds. The visitors were then pegged back into their own half until the break.

“We hoped that some PSG players would have their minds turned to partying because of Neymar, but they were all serious,” Amiens coach Christophe Pelissier said. “We did what we could, but it was really tough offensively.” Arguably the man of the match, Cavani was a constant threat with his runs and the 34-year-old Alves showed age is not slowing him down.

Bossing the midfield and enjoying possession, PSG combined well in Amiens’ box with a series of quick passes that unsettled the visitors’ back four, although it took Emery’s side some time to find the net. The hosts had two good chances in the first 10 minutes but Cavani sent the first over, then fired wide after being set up by Di Maria on both occasions.

PSG’s next chance came in the 18th minute from a corner that ended with Adrien Rabiot, but his header flew over the bar. Rabiot tested Regis Gurtner with a low shot soon after the half-hour, yet his strike was too weak and comfortably stopped.

Cavani finally broke the deadlock with three minutes left in the first half from Alves’ assist. The Uruguay striker controlled the ball with his right foot and slotted home with his left into the bottom corner.

PSG kept dominating after the interval as Di Maria produced a good save from Gurtner with a left-footed volley from Marco Verratti’s precise pass, and Cavani had another shot blocked in the 75th.

Pastore doubled PSG’s lead in the 80th at the end of a counterattack after Verratti released the ball for Cavani, who sent it to the Argentine midfielder to finish off the slick passing move with a calm finish.

Bayern beats Dortmund on penalties to win German Supercup

DORTMUND — Sven Ulreich saved two penalties Saturday as Bayern Munich defeated Borussia Dortmund 5-4 in a shootout to win the season-opening German Supercup. The game went straight to penalties after Bayern scored late in a goalmouth scramble to earn a 2-2 draw in regular time. Christian Pulisic had fired Dortmund into an early lead but Robert Lewandowski equalized against his former club shortly afterward. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang thought he’d won it for the home side, only for Joshua Kimmich’s shot to be deflected in via Lukasz Piszczek and Roman Buerki.

Kimmich missed his penalty kick, but Ulreich saved against Sebastian Rode and Marc Bartra for Bayern to win the minor trophy for the second straight year. “It was a deserved victory,” Ulreich said.

It was Bayern’s fourth Supercup since the match between league and cup winners was revived in 2010, and it reduced the pressure on Bayern after some poor pre-season results. Carlo Ancelotti’s side lost 3-0 at home to Premier League team Liverpool on Tuesday and followed it with a 2-0 defeat to Serie A side Napoli on Wednesday. Pulisic

Without Neymar, PSG wins season-opener against Amiens

PARIS — The star was missing but the party went ahead successfully at the Parc des Princes on Saturday as Paris Saint-Germain won its French league season-opener. Without Neymar on the pitch, Edinson Cavani and Javier Pastore took on the scoring responsibilities to ensure PSG got a winning start by beating promoted Amiens 2-0. It was only PSG’s fourth win in its last 12 season-opening games in Ligue 1.

World-record signing Neymar was ineligible to play because of paperwork issues and PSG coach Unai Emery opted for a 4-3-3 formation with Pastore and Angel Di Maria supporting Cavani. Just like the fans, Neymar watched from the stands. The French league did not receive his international transfer certificate from the Spanish federation before Friday night’s deadline, despite his 222 million euro ($262 million) move from Barcelona being completed the previous day.

“All I know is that the club did everything to have the player’s transfer ratified,” Emery said. “He prepared for the game with the group, we waited until the very end. I don’t know if Spain did everything, but PSG did all it could,” Neymar did not play but he gave fans something to cheer about during his official presentation before the game. Neymar was unveiled at a ceremony involving fireworks and did a lap of honor.

The 25-year-old Brazil international is now expected to make his debut on Aug. 13 against Guingamp.

“With Neymar we can get bigger,” said Emery, whose main objectives this season are to win the Champions League and to regain the French league title his players relinquished to Monaco last season. Hired a few weeks before Neymar this summer, Brazil defender Dani Alves was given his first start, while Alphonse Areola was prefered to Kevin Trapp in goal.

Amiens has the smallest budget of the league with

25 million euros — not much more than a tenth of what PSG paid for Neymar — and it showed. Amiens gave away possession immediately after kickoff with a long ball that went out of bounds. The visitors were then pegged back into their own half until the break.

“We hoped that some PSG players would have their minds turned to partying because of Neymar, but they were all serious,” Amiens coach Christophe Pelissier said. “We did what we could, but it was really tough offensively.” Arguably the man of the match, Cavani was a constant threat with his runs and the 34-year-old Alves showed age is not slowing him down.

Bossing the midfield and enjoying possession, PSG combined well in Amiens’ box with a series of quick passes that unsettled the visitors’ back four, although it took Emery’s side some time to find the net. The hosts had two good chances in the first 10 minutes but Cavani sent the first over, then fired wide after being set up by Di Maria on both occasions.

PSG’s next chance came in the 18th minute from a corner that ended with Adrien Rabiot, but his header flew over the bar. Rabiot tested Regis Gurtner with a low shot soon after the half-hour, yet his strike was too weak and comfortably stopped.

Cavani finally broke the deadlock with three minutes left in the first half from Alves’ assist. The Uruguay striker controlled the ball with his right foot and slotted home with his left into the bottom corner.

PSG kept dominating after the interval as Di Maria produced a good save from Gurtner with a left-footed volley from Marco Verratti’s precise pass, and Cavani had another shot blocked in the 75th.

Pastore doubled PSG’s lead in the 80th at the end of a counterattack after Verratti released the ball for Cavani, who sent it to the Argentine midfielder to finish off the slick passing move with a calm finish.

Bayern beats Dortmund on penalties to win German Supercup

DORTMUND — Sven Ulreich saved two penalties Saturday as Bayern Munich defeated Borussia Dortmund 5-4 in a shootout to win the season-opening German Supercup. The game went straight to penalties after Bayern scored late in a goalmouth scramble to earn a 2-2 draw in regular time. Christian Pulisic had fired Dortmund into an early lead but Robert Lewandowski equalized against his former club shortly afterward. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang thought he’d won it for the home side, only for Joshua Kimmich’s shot to be deflected in via Lukasz Piszczek and Roman Buerki.

Kimmich missed his penalty kick, but Ulreich saved against Sebastian Rode and Marc Bartra for Bayern to win the minor trophy for the second straight year. “It was a deserved victory,” Ulreich said.

It was Bayern’s fourth Supercup since the match between league and cup winners was revived in 2010, and it reduced the pressure on Bayern after some poor pre-season results. Carlo Ancelotti’s side lost 3-0 at home to Premier League team Liverpool on Tuesday and followed it with a 2-0 defeat to Serie A side Napoli on Wednesday. Pulisic

Gatlin stuns Bolt to win 100m world title

LONDON - Justin Gatlin ruined Usain Bolt’s farewell party when the 35-year-old American won the world 100 metres title on Saturday, beating the Jamaican superstar into third and sparking a chorus of boos from a London crowd unhappy with his doping past.

MANGUPURA - This beautiful temple is located on a plateau of Kerta village, Petang, Badung. It is approximately 30 km north of Denpasar. Amazing natural scenery can be seen from the temple courtyard.

Pucak Tedung has three courtyards. The first is the highest one or the innermost courtyard (jeroan).

This area hosts the main buildings.

The second one is middle courtyard (jaba tengah) consisting of bale kulkul (wooden split drum tower) and Panggungan pavilion and the lowest is outermost courtyard (jaba sisi). In the meantime, in the

northwest of the Pucak Tedung Temple, there is a small temple called Sekartaji Temple with only two buildings, namely the shrine of Batur Sari and Paruman Pancaresi.

Existence of this temple is closely associated with Pucak Tedung. Literally, the Pucak Tedung is derived from two words. In Balinese, pucak means the highest point of plateau, while tedung is a kind of sacred umbrella. So far, the etymology on the name of Pucak Tedung has not been found in any palm-leaf manuscripts or chronicles. Mythologically, it is said that in the past there was a leader of Hinduism named Danghyang Nirartha or Bhatara Sakti Wawu Rawuh made a pilgrimage from Pulaki to eastern part of the Island of Bali. Among his journey, he took a rest on the

highest point of a plateau (Balinese people usually call it pucak). When he resumed the journey, his umbrella was left behind on the peak.

Hence, the plain is called Pucak Tedung and the temple established is called Pucak Tedung. During the glory of Mengwi kingdom around the seventeenth century whose territory got to the region of North Badung, the supervision or maintenance of Pucak Tedung was submitted to Carangsari Palace. Then, Carangsari Palace handed over the supervision and maintenance to Kerta Palace. In the seventeenth century, Carangsari Palace developed its territory where an offspring named I Gusti Ngurah Rai moved to Petang village and settled there. Since Kerta Palace had no descendant, the supervision and

maintenance of Pucak Tedung was then submitted to Petang Palace, denoting a fraction of Carangsari Palace. In the meantime, paraphernalia such as holy bell was still kept in Kerta Palace.

In the administration of I Gusti Ngurah Rai at Petang village, there was division of the territory of customary village and supporting devotees (pangemong) of the Pucak Tedung Temple. They are the Sulangai village, Munduk Damping customary village, Lipah customary village, Sandakan customary village, Angantiga customary village, Batulantang customary village, Kerta customary village and Petang customary village.

Aside from the customary village communities mentioned above, during the temple festival

or piodalan at Pucak Tedung many pilgrims from outside Petang subdistrict also come to say prayers to the temple. Every temple in Bali has piodalan or temple festival organized differently. There are temples whose festival fall once a year (based on Balinese lunar year) or every six months or 210 days (pawukon year). Piodalan at Pucak Tedung is conducted every six months, falling on Saturday Kliwon Krulut or Tumpek Krulut.

On the piodalan, sanctified effigy of the deity is carried in melasti (purificatory rite) procession to Beji Temple. After returning from the Beji Temple, it takes a rest at Sekartaji Temple. Literally, this sojourn or short break is just like tidying up clothes before entering a house. (kmb)

What was meant to be a glorious celebration of the departure of the sport’s greatest showman turned into a condemnation of its biggest pantomime villain as Gatlin, twice banned for drug offences, rolled back the years to win a second world title 12 years after his first and 13 after claiming Olympic 100m gold.

As so often before Bolt made a terrible start but for once could not make it up as Christian Coleman, the 21-year-old American who beat him in the semi-finals, looked set for victory.

But Gatlin, who stumbled at the death to lose the 2015 world final to Bolt by a hundredth of a second, on this occasion timed his surge and dip to perfection to win in 9.92 seconds.

Coleman, who has run over 40 races this year but turned professional only a few weeks ago, took silver in 9.94.

Bolt, straining every sinew, fought all the way to the line but the pace and grace that took him to his world record of 9.58 eight years ago has withered with age and perennial injury battles and this time he ran out of track.

“It’s just one of those things,” Bolt said.

“My start is killing me. Normally, it gets better during the rounds but it didn’t come together.”

When the results flashed up on the giant screen the crowd immediately began repeating the booing with which Gatlin’s name had been greeted since the heats on Friday.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, his first response was to put his finger to his lips to indicate silence. The crowd reacted by chanting Bolt’s name and the Jamaican hugged Gatlin and told him he did not deserve the disrespect.

“I tuned it out (the boos) through the rounds and stayed the course. I did what I had to do,” said Gatlin, who served a four-year ban from 2006 for a second doping offence - which he

“I needed to be in a better place after 30 metres but I just wasn’t in that super-shape I needed to be in,” said Bolt, who turns 31 this month.

“I gave it my best shot but my body’s telling me it’s time to go.”

He still has another chance to add to the medal tally in the 4x100m relay next week - when he will be desperate to avenge Satur-

day’s defeat in what, if the Americans manage to get the baton round, should be a last-leg showdown with Gatlin.

Also in the U.S. team will be Coleman, who looked set for a remarkable victory running in the lane alongside Bolt until the man 14 years his senior snatched it from lane eight of nine.

Coleman, however, was not about to complain.

“Both of us have done well, I’m really happy for him to get the gold and I’m delighted with silver,” he said.

Of Bolt, he added: “He’s a man who has taken the sport to a whole new level.

Luvo Manyonga of South Africa celebrates winning gold.

LONDON - South Africa’s Luvo Manyonga said he was “over the moon” after winning the World Championship long jump title on Saturday, making up for the disappointment of missing out on an Olympic gold in Rio. Manyonga, who only returned to formal competition last year after overcoming a drug addiction, led the final from the second round with a leap of 8.48 metres - the third best mark of 2017.

The 26-year-old held off the challenge of American Jarrion Lawson, who in his first senior championships jumped a seasonbest 8.44 in the final round to claim silver.

The bronze was taken by Manyonga’s compatriot Ruswahl Samaai, the leader in the Diamond League standings, who jumped 8.32.

“This gold medal makes me feel over the moon. I have been praying to get this gold medal,” Manyonga said.

“The world record is my next goal. Ruswahl and me are pushing each other through the events. I am the best in the world - this sounds great.”

Manyonga, a junior champion in 2010, suffered numerous personal setbacks in recent years.

Coming from a township just outside of Cape Town, he was given an 18-month suspension

in 2012 for testing positive for the recreational drug tik - the local variant of crystal methamphetamine.

The South African admitted previously that at one point he felt about “five percent away” from death.

After missing out on gold in Rio with his final effort ruled a no-jump, the relief at his win in London was evident as he fell backwards into the sandpit and made an angel imprint.

“I do not feel like thinking about the last attempt in 2016, this brings back bad memories.

It does not matter anymore because I have the gold medal now.” (rtr)

United Nations bans key N.Korea exports over missile tests

UNITED NATIONS - The United Nations Security Council unanimously imposed new sanctions on North Korea on Saturday that could slash by a third the Asian state’s $3 billion annual export revenue over its two intercontinental ballistic missile tests in July.

The U.S.-drafted resolution bans North Korean exports of coal, iron, iron ore, lead, lead ore and seafood. It also prohibits countries from increasing the current numbers of North Korean laborers working abroad, bans new joint ventures with North Korea and any new investment in current joint ventures.

“We should not fool ourselves into thinking we have solved the problem.

Not even close. The North Korean threat has not left us, it is rapidly growing more dangerous,” U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley told the council.

“Further action is required. The United States is taking and will continue to take prudent defensive measures to protect ourselves and our allies,” she said. Washington would continue annual joint military exercises with South Korea, Haley said.

North Korea has accused the United States and South Korea of escalating tensions by conducting military drills.

China and Russia slammed U.S. deployment of the THAAD anti-missile defense system in South Korea. China’s U.N. Ambassador Liu Jieyi called for a halt to the deployment and for any equipment in place to be dismantled.

Liu also urged North Korea to “cease taking actions that might further escalate tensions.”

U.S. President Donald Trump hailed the vote in a Twitter message on Saturday evening.

“The United Nations Security Council just voted 15-0 to sanction North Korea. China and Russia voted with us. Very big financial impact!” Trump wrote.

South American trade bloc Mercosur indefinitely suspended Venezuela, adding to international pressure on Maduro to dismantle the newly created assembly and restore democracy. The assembly passed a resolution “emphatically rejecting” Mercosur’s action.

The constituent assembly replaced Ortega with Maduro’s human rights ombudsman, Tarek Saab, a government ally who the opposition says has turned a blind eye to state abuses.

After taking his oath as prosecutor, Saab vowed to stop violence against security forces and Maduro loyalists. He slammed Ortega for what he called her “complicity and inaction” in the face of the bloodshed that has occurred in recent months.

The new legislative body has no checks on its powers, and critics say the decision to remove Ortega is an ominous sign of a swerve by Maduro into full-blown dictatorship.

Critics blame Maduro’s statecentric policies for pushing Venezuela into an economic crisis marked by triple digit inflation and severe shortages of food and medicine.

Maduro says the U.S. “empire” is waging economic war on Venezuela and refuses to allow humanitarian aid to enter the country.

He says the new assembly is the only way to unify Venezuela into a peaceful, prosperous socialist state.

Venezuela’s pro-gov’t assembly fires dissident prosecutor CARACAS - Venezuela’s new legislative superbody removed the country’s chief prosecutor and ordered her to stand trial in its first session on Saturday, confirming opposition fears that it would use its powers to root out critics of President Nicolas Maduro.

The prosecutor, Luisa Ortega, had become Maduro’s main challenger from within the ruling socialist movement since the start of opposition street protests in April, which have left more than 120 people dead as rock-throwing protesters were met by state security forces firing rubber bullets and water cannon.

Ortega accused Maduro of human rights abuses and of fudging the results of last weekend’s election of the new 545-member constituent assembly. The opposition, in control of the country’s traditional congress, boycotted the vote, meaning that all candidates for the new body were Maduro allies.

His loyalist Supreme Court sent a letter to the assembly announcing its indictment of Ortega, accusing her of “alleged commission of serious misconduct”, without

Taiwan fumes as Indonesia sends fraud suspects to China

TAIPEI - Taiwan has protested to Indonesia for sending more than 100 telecoms fraud suspects, including 22 Taiwan nationals, to China, the self-ruled island said on Thursday, the latest in a series of such deportations. Taiwan, an island China considers a wayward province, has protested to Vietnam, Cambodia and Kenya for doing the same thing.

Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia and Kenya, like all but a shrinking handful of countries in the world, adhere to Beijing’s “one China” policy and do not recognise diplomatic rival Taiwan, whose official name is the Republic of China.

China has suspended dialogue with Taipei since June, a month after pro-independence Tsai Ing-wen took office as Taiwan’s president, because Tsai has refused to accept Beijing’s “one China” principle.

Indonesia sent 143 suspects to either the Chinese cities of Chengdu or Tianjin on Thursday, the Taiwan foreign ministry said in a statement. Indonesia had cooperated with China to arrest the 143 suspects on Saturday, the statement said. “We request a diplomatic consul visit as well as assistance in identifying the people, and urge Indonesia to handle this justly in accordance with the law as well

as to provide channels for judicial relief to the Taiwan nationals,” the ministry said.

Taiwan also emphasized that China and Taiwan should cooperate to investigate cross-border crime. “But China forcibly sending Taiwan nationals to the Chinese mainland completely ignores goodwill and appeals from our side...and impacts the healthy development of cross-straits relations,” Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council said.

China’s foreign ministry did not comment on the case on Thursday.

Indonesia’s immigration office spokesman Agung Sampurno said all of the 143 suspects were Chinese nationals. Authorities in the Southeast Asian country also had three Taiwanese and one Malaysian in custody related to the fraud case, but they were still under investigation, Sampurno added.

China has never renounced the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control. China’s Nationalists fled to the island after losing the Chinese civil war with the Communists in 1949. Last year, Beijing thanked Kenya for deporting five people from Taiwan to China as part of a crackdown on telecoms fraud, and urged Taiwan to support the action after its foreign ministry protested. Tanjung Priok operates normally despite strike: Minister

JAKARTA - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi has said that Tanjung Priok Port has operated normally, including exportimport activities, despite the workers’ strike at Jakarta International Container Terminal (JICT). The strike is planned to be held from August 3 to 10, 2017. “Alhamdulillah (Thank God), the port operations ran well. We hope that it could continue to operate,” Budi said, after inspecting the Greater Jakarta Light Rail Transit (LRT) project near Jagorawi toll road in Jakarta, on Friday.

The minister noted that workers demands would be discussed with the companys management, and the ministry did not have the authority to intervene. The ministry assured that the port could operate normally despite the problem, he asserted. “Therefore, we have communicated with stakeholders through harbormaster. There is a cooperation between JICT team and companies there,” he added.

Budi disclosed that he had not received reports on stagnation in Tanjung Priok Port and complaints from companies until the second day of the strike. The minister has called on companies to submit reports to the ministry if they found difficulties because of the workers’ strike. “I will be all out to improve services in vital facilities. It is the governments task to handle this.

We guarantee that it (services) would run normally,” he remarked.

Budi has also called on the JICT labor union to stop its action and focus on public services. “I called on the labor union to stop the strike. This is vital facility. We should not go on strike,” he added.

More than 650 workers of the JICT at North Jakartas Tanjung Priok port have gone on strike since Thursday, demanding the balance of their bonuses, which they claim had been reduced by 42 percent. The bonuses were cut after the companys profit before tax (PBT) dropped from US$66.3 million in 2015 to $44.2 million in 2016. Workers have also demanded a rescue for JICT as national asset that would be managed by local workers. (ant)

BUSINESS BUMPY ROAD China’s goods trade surplus for July, due on Tuesday, looks set to top $46 billion, according to a Reuters poll of economists. That would be the second highest this year. Although the surplus has fallen sharply year on year over the first half of 2017, against the United States it has increased 6.5 percent.

“We see a bumpy road ahead for the trade relationship between the two countries”, said Yang Zhao, Nomura’s chief China economist. “But it is unlikely that the two nations will enter a true trade war.”

Part of the reason for China’s bigger surplus with the U.S. this year is the better performance of the world’s no. 1 economy, Zhao said.

German figures also due on Tuesday are expected to show its goods trade surplus widened too, to 21 billion euros ($24.7 billion) in June from 20.3 billion in May, according to the Reuters poll.

Germany had the world’s biggest current account surplus in 2016 at $289 billion and has been under pressure to boost domestic demand to lessen its reliance on exports - not least from European Union peers that want to raise their own competitiveness.

Berlin can point to the fact its trade surplus has actually fallen 2 percent in the 12 months to May compared with the same period a year ago, but that pace of progress may not be enough to spare it criticism from the United States. “I suspect it’s a lot of rhetoric at the moment,” said Dixon at Commerzbank. “But that doesn’t mean to say we can dismiss the risk.”(rtr)

LONDON - Talk of trade war looks here to stay for the time being, especially as data over the coming week seems more likely than not to aggravate U.S. President Donald Trump’s gripes with China and Germany. While global trade has bubbled back into life after a lean few years, so too have fears of protectionism, leaving financial markets wary in an otherwise improving global economy.

“Do I think that the U.S. will be dumb enough to go ahead and put in place a series of measures which will act as an obstacle to trade with these countries? I suspect not,” said Peter Dixon, global financial economist at Commerzbank in London. The United States posted a much smaller goods trade deficit than expected for June, helped by an improvement in exports.

But this may be eclipsed by figures from China and Germany due in coming days.

Philippines’ Duterte warns miners: “I will tax you to death”

MANILA - Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday said he wanted to stop exporting mineral resources and might close the mining sector completely and tax miners “to death” if damage to the environment persisted. “The protection of the environment must be made a priority ahead of mining and all other activities that adversely affect one way or another,” Duterte said in his State of the Nation address, his second since assuming power in June last year. “This policy is non-negotiable.”

The Philippines is the world’s biggest supplier of nickel ore and also among the top producers of copper and gold. However, the sector contributes less than 1 percent to the country’s economy, based on data from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau. The country’s miners have been under fire by Duterte’s government for alleged violations that include building mines in prohibited areas like watersheds.

Duterte said miners have “considerably neglected” their duty to protect the environment and to repair damage done by mining. “You have to come up with a substitute, either spend to restore the virginity of the source or I will tax you to death,” he said. Duterte also said he wanted all mineral resources extracted from the country to be processed domestically before being exported.

“I call on our industrialists, inves-

tors, commercial barons to put up factories and manufacturing establishments right here in the Philippines to process our raw materials into finished products,” he said.

Previous governments in the Philippines called for more domestic processing of raw minerals but the country’s Congress has not enacted appropriate laws. The Philippines became the world’s top nickel ore exporter after Indonesia banned exports of unprocessed ore in 2014, a move meant to spur the development of higher value smelting industries.

The country has four mineral processing plants, two for gold and two for nickel. But most of its metallic mineral output is shipped abroad unprocessed.

“If possible, we shall put a stop to the extraction and exportation of our mineral resources...for processing abroad and importing them back

to the Philippines in the form of consumer goods at prices twice or thrice the value of the raw materials,” Duterte said. To encourage smelting investments, the government needs to provide incentives to investors and subsidize power costs, which are high in the Philippines, mining industry executives have said.

Duterte’s first appointment as Environment Minister, Regina Lopez, was dismissed in May by the Philippine Congress but she led a 10-month crackdown on the industry, highlighted by the closure and suspension of 26 of the country’s 41 mines.

She also imposed a ban on openpit mining and demanded a bigger government share in mining revenues, but her orders are now under review, according to a senior official of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau.(rtr)

In addition to four pieces of gender instruments, it will use other instruments such as a pair of drum, kempur and so on. The gamelan composition played when the performance of puppet shadow begins with tabuh petegak like the Sekar Sungsang and selendro scales.

After that, the gamelan composition played is Tabuh Pamungkah used when commencing to play the klayon to finish of the klayon.

Then, it is resumed with paguneman where the puppet is stabbed accompanied by gamelan composition entitled Tulang Lindung. After stabbing the puppets, it is continued with gamelan entitled Panyacah Parwa in the form of alas arum.

When the puppet is told to walk or move, it will use angkat-angkatan gamelan music. Moreover, when the puppet is crying it uses special mesem gamelan composition for slant-eyed puppets. For the puppet with glowering eyes, it will use rebong gamelan music and during

wartime it will use bebatelan.

“Thus, in once staging from the beginning to finish, it will use approximately 10 gamelan compositions with an average duration of two minutes except for the Tabuh Petegak whose duration is approximately 15 minutes,” he said.

In ngaben or cremation ceremony, though the carrying of bade tower has been accompanied by baleganjur gamelan music, it will also use the puppet gender. He told it is meant to provide strains of beauty, peace and comfort for the atman (soul) that will go to heaven. While the baleganjur like Gora functions to improve and raise the spirit of the community when they are obliged to lift the heavy bade. Played in Makotekan and Slendro Scale Gender musical instrument becomes a compulsory accompaniment for a puppet show in Bali.

So, in the staging there are two arts played together namely the art of leather puppet along with all the plays and dialogues as well as the art of gender gamelan composition of the puppet show.

Besides, the gender is often used or played in various ritual activities such as in the implementation of tooth filing activities and when the bade tower carrying corpse is brought to cemetery. Thus, gender becomes a distinctive gamelan instrument when compared to other musical instruments.

An artist and lecturer at the ISI Denpasar, I Nyoman Astita, said although in terms of the form it is not different from other gamelan instrument, the gender of puppet

is indeed the beginning or inspiration of the iron or copper gamelan instrument fastened or tied in such a way by using a rope to float and generate a battier tone when compared to other old gamelan types commonly put on the pedestal.

When playing, the gamelan players are using both hands where left hand plays the tone or the main melody while right hand play in makotekan way namely forming series of rhythm tone of the two gamelan instruments.

Furthermore, he said that playing the puppet gender must be in pair or two pieces because gamelan play in the right hand of both players will produce a different pattern where if gamelan artist plays nyangsih, the partner will play pepolosan.

Thus, playing in pairs will result in a rhythm that integrates the sangsih and papolosan known as makotekan.

“The advantages of this puppet gender to me is in terms of technique and playing technique that are fairly sophisticated and

complicated because at the same time two hands will play individually or counter point with the techniques and even a different beat can produce a different rhythm as well,” he said.

He added that in general, Balinese gamelan instrument using resonator in the form of bamboo underneath as a sound repeater will usually be set so that the pair can result in ngumbang-ngisep or waving tones. So, when the pair is played even though one tone only will produce a vibrating or waving sound. Similar thing is also found in the puppet gender, so in addition to being able to makotekan the use of a pair of puppet gender is also aimed to produce a waving sound.

However, the main puppet gender in use in a staging consists of 4 pieces namely a pair of pamade or the gender having bass sound because of lower octave score and a pair of barangan whose octave score is higher but both will produce an interesting and harmonious tone to be heard. (was)

MANGUPURA — Coinciding with the 72nd celebration of the Indonesia’s Independence Day, Kuta customary village and LPM Kuta will hold Beach Festival featuring SeaSandLand. This activity serves as participation in maintaining the national unity. Kuta Beach visitors will be presented with a number of agenda in the event taking place for five days on August15-19.

Chairman of LPM Kuta, Gusti Agung Made Agung, explained on Friday (Aug. 4) that Kuta SeaSandLand is one of the tourist attractions held coinciding with the moment of the Indonesia’s Independence Day celebration. In addition to the spirit of unity, the event is designed in the form of Beach Festival to boost domestic and foreign tourist visits.

Kuta SeaSandLand has an ideology uniting the three main elements of Indonesia’s homeland. Sea describes the maritime power of Indonesia, having long been the pride of this archipelago.

Sand represents the diversity of the archipelago, but remains an integral part of Indonesia. In the meantime, Land represents where the people of Indonesia uphold unity as the root of the nation appreciating the values of diversity, and loving the homeland of Indonesia.

He said that on August 15 will be filled with an archipelagic parade that will involve 14 hamlets across Kuta and traditional arts of the archipelago along the coast of Kuta. In addition, this event will also be enlivened by a series of artists such as RIF Band, Double-T, Soul Id and Wildeones. Suu Kyi’s man in Yangon under fire over transit deal with China

SYDNEY - The U.S. Navy and Marine Corps suspended their search and rescue efforts on Sunday for three U.S. Marines missing after their aircraft crashed into the sea off Australia’s northeast coast a day earlier, the U.S. Marine Corps said.

The Marine Corps said they had shifted to recovery efforts in coordination with the Australian Defence Force, which could last several months, and had notified the next-of-kin of the three missing Marines.

“The transition comes after teams led continuous sustained search efforts supported by aircraft and ships,” the III Marine Expeditionary Force, based in Okinawa, Japan, said.

“As the sea state permits, recovery efforts will be conducted to further search, assess and survey the area ...,” they said in a statement.

The U.S. Marines have described the incident involving the MV22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft as a “mishap” and said it was under investigation.

Ospreys have been involved in incidents resulting in deaths or injuries in recent years.

Twenty-three other personnel aboard the aircraft had been rescued. Australian emergency officials said one person had been taken to hospital in Rockhampton in northeastern Queensland state but gave no other details.

“All other personnel are accounted for and safe,” the III Marine Expeditionary Force said on Twitter.

The incident happened off the coast of Shoalwater Bay in Queensland at about 4 p.m. local time on Saturday (0600 GMT), the Marine Corps said. They called off the search at about 3 a.m. on Sunday (1700 GMT Saturday). (rtr)

YANGON - Aung San Suu Kyi’s first major infrastructure project could hardly be more visible - hundreds of new yellow buses now plying the streets of Yangon in what her ruling party hopes will be a potent symbol of how it is transforming peoples’ lives.

But two deals to import 2,000 buses from China estimated at more than $100 million have caused an unusual rift within her National League for Democracy (NLD), with regional lawmakers questioning its cost and accusing Yangon’s chief minister Phyo Min Thein, a Suu Kyi protégé, of cronyism and a lack of accountability.

“Phyo Min Thein’s government lacks transparency,” said Kyaw Zay Ya, a Yangon NLD lawmaker. “The image of the government will be damaged if he doesn’t change.”

The deal, struck with Chinese companies and a businessman with ties to the junta that ruled Myanmar for decades, has also soured relations with the West, according to diplomats.

While there is no evidence that any laws were broken in the awarding of the contracts, Roland Kobia, the EU ambassador to Myanmar, complained in a private letter to

Commerce Minister Than Myint of a lack of transparency in public procurements.

“Currently, the domestic economy remains dominated by a small number of domestic and regional actors whose long-standing practices prevent fair competition,” Kobia wrote in the June dated letter, seen by Reuters. The letter did not specifically refer to the bus deal.

Although the Chinese buses were about half the price of international rivals, engineers who inspected them for Myanmar predict that they will wear out and need to be replaced far sooner than the international standard.

Phyo Min Thein declined several interview requests from Reuters.

He and other ministers have previously defended the deal, saying the government-to-government agreement with China offered a discount price and express delivery.

EU ambassador Kobia said in a statement in response to Reuters’ questions that “many European actors stand ready to work in Myanmar, but more needs to be done to give them a fair chance to compete for contracts”.

He was referring to the broader issue of transparency in public procurements, the EU said.

Myanmar’s commerce ministry spokesman Khin Maung Lwin declined to comment.

When Suu Kyi swept to power in an electoral landslide in 2015, analysts predicted Western companies, whose government’s had cheered on the transition to democracy in the Southeast Asian nation that began in 2011, would flock to the country.

Salt becomes classic problem

Farmers need land and use of technology

RIO DE JANEIRO - From the architect. The design of the Museum is inspired by the Carioca culture and through its architecture, explores the relationship between the city and the natural environment. The Museum includes 5,000 square meters of temporary and permanent exhibition space, as well as a 7,600 square meter plaza that wraps around the structure and extends along the dock. The building features large overhangs 75 meters in length on the side facing the square and 45 meters in length on the side facing the sea. These features highlight the extension of the Museum from the dock into the bay.

upstairs, and features a roof 10 meters high with panoramic views of Guanabara Bay. The total height of the building is limited to 18 meters, which protects the view from the bay of Sao Bento Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cantilevering roof with its large mobile wings and the facade structure expand almost the full length of the pier emphasizing the extension into the Guanabara Bay, while minimizing the building’s width. A reflection pool surrounding the building on the outside—used to filter water that is being pumped from the bay and released back in from the end of the pier— gives visitors the impression that the Museum is floating. “The

idea is that the building feels ethereal, almost floating on the sea, like a ship, a bird or a plant. Because of the changing nature of the exhibits, we have introduced an archetypal structure inside the building. This simplicity allows for the functional versatility of the Museum, able to accommodate conferences or act as a research space,” said Mr. Calatrava. The building is orientated in the north-south direction, off-center from the pier’s longitudinal eastwest axis, maximizing a continuous landscaping feature containing beautiful gardens, paths and leisure areas along the southern length of the pier. A park walkway around the perimeter of the pier will allow visi-

tors to circumnavigate the Museum, while enjoying panoramic views of the Sao Bento Monastery and the Guanabara Bay. The lower level contains functional and technical rooms, such as the Museum’s administrative offices, educational facilities, research space, an auditorium, a museum store, a restaurant, lobby, archives, storage and a delivery area. Located on the Maua Pier, the Museum of Tomorrow is part of a larger revitalization of Porto Maravilha, the port neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro. The project allows for better integration between the Port District and the city center and is helping to make this area one of

the most attractive neighborhoods in the city. The building “is the result of a consistent dialogue. The building was built to be a museum for the future, and an educational unit,” said Mr. Calatrava. The building features sustainable design, incorporating natural energy and light sources. Water from the bay is used to regulate the temperature inside the building; this source also supplies water for the Museum’s surrounding reflecting pools. The Museum also uses photovoltaic solar panels, which can be adjusted to optimize the angle of the sun’s rays throughout the day and generate solar energy to supply the building. (IBP/net)

DENPASAR — Salt issue has become a problem for years and even for dozens of years in Indonesia. On the other hand, Indonesia is an archipelagic country having the largest beach. Thus, Indonesia should have no problem in the salt matters.

According to an economic observer and professor at the Faculty of Economics, Udayana University, Prof. Dr. I Wayan Ramantha, the problem is the need between consumption salt and industrial salt that should be met with domestic production.

Domestic production met by the potential of beach and so forth is very high, other than for tourism purposes. “However so far, our human resources and technology to produce salt consumption is still very low,” he said. Thus, there are two problems faced by Indonesia namely the human resources and technology.

He hoped that in the future the government can help improve the productivity of farmers by facilitating them. The potential of traditional salt in West Bali especially in West Buleleng and Kusamba, Klungkung, just needs to be improved. “At least, their production can supply local needs,” he said.

He hoped there will be a focus of coaching by relevant institutions to that way.

By that way, it is expected not to import salt. In the meantime, the low price of salt at IDR 500 per kg at the farmer level makes the human resources less interested in pursuing salt farming. According to him, it happens because of economic scale.

When the current productivity of

conventional salt farmers can only produce 10-100 kg per day, certainly it is not economical. However, if farmers produce in large-scale, with the help of technology and larger number of labor, eventually farmers can increase their average productivity per year.

“For example, it‘s enough to employ three people and the use of technology like water pump instead of carrying the water manually as well as the use of technology to heat in tiered stages. Thus, during rainy season they can still produce with greenhouses and so forth,” he explained.

Ultimately, with such simple technology they can get IDR 200,000-IDR 500,000 per day.

Automatically they will be interested. If many people are interested in working on this sector, their productivity will increase. After the productivity increases, for the government, it will save foreign exchange, and societies can play their role.

Head of the Bali Fishery and Maritime Affairs, I Made Gunaja, said that in addition to weather constraints, the land area also becomes a problem to salt farmers in Bali.

In reality, the land in Bali is said to have undergone land conversion into tourism purposes such as hotels and restaurants. However, he admitted that his agency does not have any data related to the changes in land function of salt farmers into restaurants or hotels.

“However, based on the facts in the field, there is salt farming land having been converted into a hotel. For example, it happens on Kelating Beach, Tabanan,” he said. (kmb42)

Enliven up Sanur International Kite Festival 2017

DENPASAR — A total of 64 participants from 19 countries and 58 participants from various cities in Indonesia showed off their capability at the opening of the Sanur International Kite Festival 2017 on Saturday (Aug. 5).

In the afternoon, it was performed a colossal puppet performance in the air featuring a play with the theme Bhinneka Tunggal Ika or Unity in Diversity.

On that occasion, Rai Mantra highly appreciated to various creative activities in Denpasar city such as the Sanur Village Festival assembled with various activities, including the Sanur International Kite Festival regularly held every year. “In addition to supporting the cultural conservation, the kites also have an economic impact. Moreover, this event can bring in the rare angon abroad,” he said.

Such a festival is hoped to continuously be developed and maintained as a medium for cultural strengthening. Kite as a cultural attraction having existed since the past time is expected to keep sustainable in the

hands of creative young people. On that occasion, Rai Mantra embedded a gold pin to the senior figure of rare angon (kite flyers) namely A.A. Rai Giri Bunadhi, Si Nyoman Adnyana, (late) Ketut Mona and Priyono.

Committee Chairman of the Sanur International Kite Festival, Kadek Dwi Armika, added that this festival is part of the BritAma Sanur Village Festival denoting one of the kite circuits awaited by the world’s masters. Approximately 2,000 kites are flown throughout the festival. In addition to featuring traditional kites like the bebean (fish-shaped), pecukan (leaf-shaped) and janggan (bird-shaped), this festival also presents creative and contemporary kites.

On Saturday morning until afternoon were flown 500 kites and resumed at night by flying 34 kites in a puppet show session in the sky. “Performance of the colossal puppet show in the sky featured the theme Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, denoting the motto of the unitary state of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI) taken from Sutasoma psalmody written by Mpu Tantular,” he said.

High salt need, farmers even threatened to go extinct

SEMARAPURA - The need for salt for consumption as well as business such as for salted fish is large enough. Amid such conditions, the number of salt farmers is getting fewer, even threatened with extinction as happened to Kusamba village, Dawan.

No younger generations are willing to continue their business in this coastal area.

A few years ago salt farmers reached 50 families. But in harmony with the passage of time, many are turning to other professions considered to be capable of providing more certain incomes. Now, only 17 families remain to survive and they mostly consist of old people.

“Most of us have turned to more promising professions. So, the remaining ones are of old age. It is hard to find out another job, while the younger generation is not going to pursue it.

Apparently, we are the surviving ones belonging to the last generation,” said a local salt farmer, Nyoman Renu.

Salt production, he continued, indeed tends to fluctuate.

In good weather, he can produce 15 to 20 kilograms. However, when the weather is bad, production drops dramatically, even nil. However, behind the relatively stable selling price, this farm can be a livelihood for survival. “Sometimes the production is down, but if seen, this farming could become a breadwinner,” he said.

Such condition is also justified by another farmer, Dewa Ketut Candra. This salt farming is no longer favored by younger generation. They prefer to look for other jobs to urban areas. “Now, there are no successors,” he explained. (kmb45)

be clean from corruption.

“We at Sekar Forum have also set up a review team for the criteria of Bali’s leaders in the future, where the members consist of the academicians, senior figures including those invited from the brotherhood of all other districts / city across Bali. This is our strategic measure to finalize leaders as what we and the people of Bali want in the future in maintaining the sustainability of Bali,” he said.

He also hoped that future leaders of Bali could practice politics

well, courteously and properly.

They should never do everything for the sake of politics to attract the attention so that the people will choose them.

“Anyone who will go forward for the gubernatorial election in 2018, if they have complied with the criteria of Bali leadership, we certainly support them. Otherwise, we as Balinese people will ask to pull out from the Bali’s leader candidacy. We also want a Balinese leader that can keep and sustain Bali,” he added. (win)

Pertamini named illegal, Industry and trade agency has no authority to prohibit

BANGLI - The existence of business selling fuel in retail is increasingly mushrooming in the community both in urban areas and rural areas. Lately, this business of selling fuel in retail is growing.

Some of the merchants no longer use bottles but a gasoline casting tool resembling at petrol station called as Pertamini.

According to the Head of the Bangli Industry and Trade Agency, Nengah Sudibya, the fuel sales business using Pertamini including those on sale in bottle is illegal.

Nevertheless, his agency cannot prohibit the business. “The authority to ban them lies in Pertamina,” he said recently.

Sudibya said that his agency can

only give an appeal that Pertamini is illegal. And all this time, the appeal has been delivered to the merchants. Besides, he has also appealed to the refueling station to always put priority to consumers coming with vehicle rather than those bringing a jerrican.

In the meantime, when asked about re-calibration of gas station,

Sudibya said it has been routinely carried out by his agency. It is one of the conditions that must be met by gas stations in order to be able to get fuel supply.

In performing the calibration, he admitted that his agency cannot do it independently. The industry and trade agency of Bangli still has to cooperate with its counterpart in

Buleleng due to limited human resources and facilities owned.

“Going forward to be a region of measurement compliance, we will do calibration to all measurement tools including the water and electric meter as well. It is meant that all consumers can get standard measurement tool,” he said. (kmb40)

LOS ANGELES - Veteran musician Lionel Richie, hiphop star and actor LL Cool J and Cuban-American singer and actress Gloria Estefan will receive the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors this year, CBS network said Thursday.

The 40th Kennedy Center Honors, to air on CBS on Dec. 26, is one of the highest awards in American culture, celebrating lifetime achievements through the performing arts. Other 2017 honorees are television writer-producer Norman Lear and dancer, choreographer and actress Carmen de Lavallade.

New ‘Game of Thrones’ episode leaks online through HBO partner

THE unaired fourth episode of the new season of HBO’s hit series “Game of Thrones” has been leaked online, the premium channel’s distribution partner Star India said on Friday.

“We take this breach very seriously and have immediately initiated forensic investigations at our and the technology partner’s end to swiftly determine the cause. This is a grave issue and we are taking appropriate legal remedial action” a Star India spokesperson said in a statement.

Star India is a subsidiary of Twenty-First Century Fox Inc. The leak of the episode, titled “The Spoils of War,” was separate from a hack on HBO that was disclosed earlier this week, HBO said in a statement. In that incident, the company’s chairman, Richard Plepler, told employees in a Monday email seen by Reuters that the hackers had stolen “proprietary information,” including some programming.

Entertainment Weekly reported on Monday that hackers stole 1.5 terrabytes of data, including two unaired episodes of the “Game of Thrones” series.

HBO is owned by Time Warner Inc, which is waiting for regulatory approval to sell itself to AT&T Inc in a $85.4 billion deal. (rtr)

SARAJEVO/BELGRADE - Swathes of southern and eastern Europe sweltered in temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius (104°F) on Friday in a heat wave nicknamed “Lucifer” that has fanned forest fires, triggered weather warning alerts and damaged crops. Italy and the Balkans were worst affected, though areas as far north as southern Poland also basked in abnormally hot temperatures, and European weather hub Meteoalarm issued its highest grade “red” warnings for 10 countries.
