Kendrick Lamar wins big, but absent Taylor Swift steals VMA show

LOS ANGELES - Kendrick Lamar and Ed Sheeran won the top prizes at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) on Sunday, but an absent Taylor Swift and lifetime achievement honoree Pink dominated the show. An angry Swift took on her critics in the world premiere of the music video for her first solo single in three years, “Look What You Made Me Do.” The satirical music video depicted Swift, 27, crawling out of a grave and declaring her old self dead in a portrayal of a hard-edged artist with nothing left to lose, drawing more than 470,000 views on Youtube within an hour of its premiere. Lamar, who went into Sunday’s event in Los Angeles with a leading eight nominations, kicked off the show with a medley that featured dancers in flames. The California rapper went home with six statuettes, including the top award for video of the year and best hip hop video for “Humble.”

British singer-songwriter Sheeran was voted artist of the year. Despite days of fevered speculation, Swift herself was a no-show, though she won the only category in which she had been nominated - best collaboration for “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever” with Zayn Malik. Nevertheless, her new video quickly became one of the show’s most talked-about moments, largely overshadowing performances by the likes of Sheeran, Fifth Harmony and Lorde. The video ended with Swift reviving all the personas of her music career - from gawky, guitar playing 16-year old to poised Grammy winner - and having them call each other out for being fake, pretending to be nice and playing the victim.

HOUSTON - Tropical Storm Harvey was set to dump more rain on Houston on Monday, adding to catastrophic flooding that paralyzed the fourth most populous U.S. city and prompted mass evacuations in nearby counties as rivers hit crests not seen for centuries. Harvey came ashore late on Friday as the most powerful hurricane to hit Texas in more than 50 years and has killed at least two people. It has since sat in the same general area around Texas’ Gulf of Mexico Coast where it is forecast to remain for several more days, drenching parts of the region with a year’s worth of rainfall in the span of a week. Schools, airports and office buildings in Houston were ordered shut on Monday as scores of roads were turned into rivers by floods and chest-high water filled numerous neighborhoods in the low-lying city. Torrential rain from Harvey hit areas more than 150 miles (240 km) away, swelling rivers upstream and causing a surge that was heading toward the Houston area. More than 50,000 people were ordered to leave parts of Fort Bend County, about 35 miles (55 km) southwest of Houston, as the Brazos

River was set to crest at a record high of 59 feet (18 m) this week, 14 feet (4.3 m) above its flood stage. Brazos County Judge Robert Hebert told reporters the forecast crest represents a high not seen in at least 800 years. Steve Bowen, chief meteorologist at reinsurance firm Aon Benfield, said: “What we’re seeing is the most devastating flood event in Houston’s recorded history. MASSIVE DAMAGE The Harris County Sheriff’s Office rescued more than 2,000 people in the greater Houston area using vehicles including motorboats, airboats and humvees on Sunday, a spokesman said. The U.S. Coast Guard and Houston police rescued hundreds more as residents brought boats to staging centers to help. The Gulf is home to almost half of the nation’s refining capacity, and the reduced supply could affect gasoline supplies across the U.S. Southeast and other parts of the country. Shutdowns extended

across the coast, including Exxon Mobil’s Baytown refinery, the second largest U.S. refinery. Gasoline futures rose as much as 7 percent in early trading on Sunday evening. Heating oil futures, a proxy for distillates like diesel fuel, were up as much as 3 percent, with supplies expected to be curtailed. The outages will limit the availability of U.S. crude, gasoline and other refined products for global consumers and further push up prices, analysts said. Three springs in Gianyar draw many visitors GIANYAR —Gianyar district has a number of springs that are not only functioned to perform melukat (purificatory rite), but also to be a tourist attraction. Today, there are three springs commonly visited by tourists, namely the Dalem Pingit bathing place (Sebatu village, Tegallalang), Goa Rang Reng waterfall (Bakbakan village, Gianyar) and Tirta Empul (Tampaksiring) as the most famous. Secretary of Sebatu village, I Wayan Kerta, some time ago explained that Dalem Pingit Temple bathing at Sebatu village is widely visited by Balinese people all this time to perform melukat. Lately, it also began to be crowded by domestic and foreign visitors. “Visitors always come not only in morning to evening, but also at night,” he said. According to Kerta, this holy bathing place is lately more crowded by residents, especially on school holidays, and on Hindu auspicious days like full moon, new moon, kajeng kliwon and other important days. When visitors are booming, the parking lot cannot accommodate visitors’ vehicle. Ultimately, the parking uses road body. In addition, there are other tourist attractions like Goa Rang Reng waterfall introduced by residents of Gitgit, Bakbakan village, to foreign and local tourists. This object is also often used for melukat or just for releasing tiredness. According to a local resident, I Made Sutama, in the Goa Rang Reng sits the Taman Manik Mas Temple. The water flows from inside the cave is taken advantage by residents for drinking water and purificatory rite before performing religious ceremonies. “Upstream of this water flow is taken advantage as tourist attraction here,” said Sutama, last Saturday. Inside the cave there is a very large spring named Telaga Embeng. From this lake, the water flows to the waterfall whose slope can be climbed by visitors. The waterfall also becomes a magnet to visitors, either for taking a bath or taking photographs. Sutama who is also a tour guide said this object is still managed independently, without any follow-up from the government. The village also tries to develop this tourist object independently. “However, it would be better if the government can land a hand,” he said. In the Goa Rang Reng sits the Taman Manik Mas Temple. Right in front of the temple, there is a flow of water running from a cave that forms a confluence. Two branches of the river are called Male Cangkir River and Female Cangkir River. Balinese people call this water campuhan or confluence. The couples that will be getting married usually do purificatory rite beforehand at this campuhan because the river water is believed as a symbol of union between men and women. “The left flow symbolize women, while the right symbolizes male,” added Sutama. Mobile library grows reading interest, ‘competes’ against internet

MOBILE library still becomes one of the alternatives to foster people’s interest in reading, no exception in Klungkung district. This mobile library can be found in public places. However, amid the increasingly advanced technology, the breakthrough of the regional archives and library agency is like experiencing a dilemma. Its existence must ‘compete’ against the sophistication of technology in the form of internet. Approaching the evening, the atmosphere of Semarapura town, Klungkung, starts to be crowded. Many residents gather in public space. One of them is at the Puputan Klungkung Monument. People come alone or with family. Amid the warm atmosphere, at the road side emerges a blue minivan. Immediately, a number of children approach, look and sort out various kinds of books that have been neatly arranged on the shelf. They search for titles in accordance with their favorite. It is the mobile library encouraged by the regional archives and library agency of Klungkung. Amid his busyness, a librarian, Ketut Agus Gunawan, does not hesitate to tell stories. Robot makers slow to address cyber risk - researchers

SINGAPORE - Researchers who warned half a dozen robot manufacturers in January about nearly 50 vulnerabilities in their home, business and industrial robots, say only a few of the problems have been addressed. The researchers, Cesar Cerrudo and Lucas Apa of cybersecurity firm IOActive, said the vulnerabilities would allow hackers to spy on users, disable safety features and make robots lurch and move violently, putting users and bystanders in danger. While they say there are no signs that hackers have exploited the vulnerabilities, they say the fact that the robots were hacked so easily and the manufacturers’ lack of response raise questions about allowing robots in homes, offices

and factories. “Our research shows proof that even non-military robots could be weaponized to cause harm,” Apa said in an interview. “These robots don’t use bullets or explosives, but microphones, cameras, arms and legs. The difference is that they will be soon around us and we need to secure them now before it’s too late.” Some of the robot manufacturers defended themselves, saying they had fixed some or all of the issues raised.

Apa’s comments come in the wake of a letter signed by more than 100 leading robotic experts urging the United Nations to ban the development of killer military robots, or autonomous weapons. Apa, a senior security consultant, said that of the six manufacturers contacted, only one, Rethink Robotics, said some of the problems had been fixed. He said he had not been able to confirm that as his team does not have access to that particular robot. A spokesman for Rethink Robotics, which makes the Baxter and

Sawyer assembly-line robots, said all but two issues - in the education and research versions of its robots had been fixed. Apa said a review of updates from the other five manufacturers - Universal Robots of Denmark, SoftBank Robotics and Asratec Corp of Japan, Ubtech of China, and Robotis Inc of South Korea - led him to believe none of the issues he had raised had been fixed. Asratec said that software released for its robots so far was limited to “hobby use sample programs”, and it believed IOActive was pointing to security vulnerabilities in those. Software it planned to release for commercial

use would be different, it said. SoftBank Robotics said it had already identified the vulnerabilities and fixed them. Ubtech said it had “fully addressed any concerns raised by IOActive that do not limit our developers from programming” their robots. Universal Robots did not respond to emailed requests for comment. Robotis Inc declined to comment. The slow reaction by the robot industry was not surprising, said Joshua Ziering, founder of Kittyhawk.io, a commercial drone software company. “A new technology bursts on to the market and people fail to secure it,” he said. TOKYO - A Japanese company has introduced a new role for SoftBank’s humanoid robot “Pepper” - a Buddhist priest for hire at funerals. Chanting sutras in a computerized voice while tapping a drum, the robot was on display on Wednesday at a funeral industry fair - the Life Ending Industry Expo - in Tokyo. Nissei Eco Co., an unlisted plastic molding maker, wrote the chanting software for “Pepper”, which was introduced by SoftBank Group Corp. in 2014. With Japan’s population ageing and shrinking, many Buddhist priests receive less financial support from their communities, prompting some to find part-time work outside their temple duties, said Michio Inamura, Nissei’s executive adviser.

The funeral robot could step in when a priest was not available, he said. It also cost less at 50,000 yen (about $450) per funeral compared to more than 240,000 yen ($2,200) for a human priest. Buddhist priest Tetsugi Matsuo said he came to the expo to see if Pepper could “impart the ‘heart’ aspect to a machine because I believe that the ‘heart’ is the foundation of religion.” The robot has not yet been hired for a funeral. Beware of UN Swissindo voucher fraud

It claims 40 victims in Bali

DENPASAR — Having been designated as a fraud investment, the UN Swissindo is now shifting the way to deceive the public. The new way used is human obligation voucher (VM1) that can be cashed at Bank Mandiri. In Bali, there have been 40 people becoming the victims of the UN Swissindo investment fraud. Head of the Office of Financial Services Authority (OJK) for Regional 8 Bali and Nusa Tenggara, Zulmi, said that pursuant to the last information received for Bali there are a total of about 40 people asking for information to Bank Mandiri related to their investment. Having been explained by the bank that there is no cooperation with this illegal company in the fund disbursement through voucher, the public immediately realized if they have been cheated. “Once explained, they just realized that there is no such cooperation and return home. Well, actually there is a plan to come again on August 18 and August 21. However, it was canceled because the bank has clarified the matter,” he said, not long ago. In Bali, he said, we should be grateful because the number of people tempted by the seduction of the UN Swissindo is much lower than other regions such as Makassar and Jaya Pura. Moreover, in both regions hundreds of people are queuing to exchange the vouchers having been purchased. “A local resident even already purchased worth millions of rupiahs in the hope of getting more money, but in fact it is not true,” he said. Furthermore, he said the operation mode of the UN Swissindo is that people wishing to get M1 voucher must submit a copy of their electronic identity card and pay administrative fee worth IDR 10,000-IDR 30,000 for one voucher. The illegal company claimed if the vouchers purchased can be redeemed to Bank Mandiri with the amount of funds of USD 1,200 or approximately IDR 15.6 million. “Certainly this is not true because Bank Mandiri has clarified there is no cooperation between the bank and UN Swissindo. Besides, Bank Indonesia has released that there is no SBI in the form of certificates,” he said. Thus, he appealed to the public not to easily believe in such an offer whose truth remains uncertain. Moreover, the offer does not make sense. So, to get clear information related to investment as well as other things such as the offer of debt repayment and the purchase of disbursable voucher, people are expected to ask for information to OJK office, law enforcement apparatus and task force handling alleged unlawful action in the field of fund raising and investment management. He added that previously there was a mode of debt repayment agreement in bank. Until July 2017, the OJK has received approximately 15 reports. They were submitted by the public as well as financial service institutions. “Once again, we reiterate there is no debt repayment of customers by using documents only from the UN Swissindo that claimed debt repayment from the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia. To that end, we appeal to the public especially those having a debt should not easily trust such an offer because it is not true,” he affirmed. (kmb42)

MANILA - Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte told police on Monday they could kill “idiots” who violently resist arrest, two days after hundreds of people turned the funeral of a slain teenager into a protest against his deadly war on drugs. Duterte met the parents of the schoolboy, 17-year-old Kian Loyd delos Santos, at the presidential palace in Manila on Monday, officials said. Details of the meeing were not immediately available. Britain pushes for talks about the future, EU wants divorce first

BRUSSELS - British officials arrive in Brussels on Monday to push the EU towards talks about their post-Brexit ties, which the bloc refuses to do without an agreement first on London’s exit bill and other divorce issues. A third round of Brexit talks takes place more than a year after Britons voted in a referendum to leave the European Union, delivering an unprecedented blow to the post-World War Two European integration. Chief Brexit negotiators, the EU’s Michel Barnier and Britain’s David Davis, will meet at 1500 GMT before more talks on Tuesday and Wednesday convene on technical level on expatriate rights, divorce bill and “other separation issues”. Senior officials will also tackle the conundrum of the future border between EU state Ireland and the United Kingdom’s Northern Ireland, and a news conference is due on Thursday, according to a schedule published by Brussels. Britain will present in detail its several papers released last week on issues ranging from customs arrangements to data sharing. They have often ventured out into the future relationship between London and what will become a 27-state EU. Britain will be urging the bloc to show “imagination” and focus discussion on these future ties rather than just on the divorce settlement. On Sunday, the opposition Labour Party said it would keep Britain in the European single market and customs union for a transitional period after Brexit, offering a clear alternative to the policies of Prime Minister Theresa May. The bloc wants to settle chief separation aspects first and has already signalled the slow progress so far means jumpstarting talks about a new accord with Britain is now less likely in October, as had been expected. “Both the UK and the EU have an interest to move forward quickly in negotiations and that requires us to make sufficient progress on citizens’ rights, on the financial settlement on Ireland,” said a senior EU official involved in the talks. “The divorce issues should be relatively straightforward to sort out. Kenya imposes world’s toughest law against plastic bags

NAIROBI - Kenyans producing, selling or even using plastic bags will risk imprisonment of up to four years or fines of $40,000 from Monday, as the world’s toughest law aimed at reducing plastic pollution came into effect. The East African nation joins more than 40 other countries that have banned, partly banned or taxed single use plastic bags, including China, France, Rwanda, and Italy. Many bags drift into the ocean, strangling turtles, suffocating seabirds and filling the stomachs of dolphins and whales with waste until they die of starvation. “If we continue like this, by 2050, we will have more plastic in the ocean than fish,” said Habib El-Habr, an expert on marine litter working with the U.N. Environment Programme in Kenya. Plastic bags, which El-Habr says take between 500 to 1,000 years to break down, also enter the human food chain through fish and

other animals. In Nairobi’s slaughterhouses, some cows destined for human consumption had 20 bags removed from their stomachs. “This is something we didn’t get ten years ago but now its almost on a daily basis,” said county vet Mbuthi Kinyanjui as he watched men in bloodied white uniforms scoop sodden plastic bags from the stomachs of cow carcases. Kenya’s law allows police to go after anyone even carrying a plastic bag. But Judy Wakhungu, Kenya’s environment minister, said enforcement would initially be directed at manufacturers and suppliers. “Ordinary wananchi will not be harmed,” she told Reuters, using a Kiswahili word for “com-

mon man”. It took Kenya three attempts over ten years to finally pass the ban, and not everyone is a fan. Samuel Matonda, spokesman for the Kenya Association of Manufacturers, said it would cost 60,000 jobs and force 176 manufacturers to close. Kenya is a major exporter of plastic bags to the region. “The knock-on effects will be very severe,” Matonda said. “It will even affect the women who sell vegetables in the market - how will their customers carry their shopping home?” Big Kenyan supermarket chains like France’s Carrefour and Nakumatt have already started offering customers cloth bags as alternatives. fighting with Islamic State in Syria. “Her sentence was reduced because she admitted to her actions,” Novi’s lawyer Kamsi told Reuters on Monday. He said the verdict was handed down by East Jakarta District Court on Aug. 25. Judges delivered the verdict earlier than expected because Novi is

pregnant and due to give birth in early September, her lawyer said. She is detained at a Jakarta area facility. Her husband is on trial for the same plot. His next hearing, at which he is expected to enter a plea, is scheduled for Sept. 6. Kamsi said Novi, who was believed to be radicalized through social media while employed as a domestic worker in Taiwan, did not intend to appeal her verdict. Police said they had intercepted

a letter that Novi intended to send to her parents stating her intention to carry out jihad. Later an unexploded bomb was found in a room the woman had rented in Bekasi, about an hour outside Jakarta. Counter-terrorism forces are worried that militants may be using new and more sophisticated tactics to try and carry out attacks - like recruiting female suicide bombers or using dangerous chemicals to make “dirty bombs”.(rtr)

Anti-graft body detains another director general of sea transportation JAKARTA - Within two years in a row, two director generals of sea transportation of the Transportation Ministry have been arrested by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). In February 2016, the anti-graft agency had detained Bobby Reynold Mamahit, the then director general, in a corruption case. In August 2016, the anti-corruption court had sentenced Mamahit to five years imprisonment. The Indonesian public was in shock when the KPK made an announcement on August 24, 2017, that it had detained Antonius Tonny Budiono, the successor of Mamahit, for allegedly receiving bribes in connection with the issuance of permits and procurement for projects under his supervision during the 2016-2017 period. “Antonius Tonny Budiono (ATB), a suspect in his capacity as the sea transportation director general, and Adiputra Kurniawan (APK), as com-

missioner of PT Adhi Guna Keruktama (AGK), have been detained for the initial 20 days,” Febri Diansyah, the KPK spokesman, had noted on Aug 24. The anti-graft agency had closely monitored and investigated Budiono for seven months before naming him a suspect. “After an initial examination and questioning, it was concluded that Director General of Sea Transportation Budiono had allegedly committed corruption in the goods and services procurement projects at the Directorate General of Sea Transportation in the 2016-2017 budget year,” KPK Deputy Chairman Basaria Panjaitan had stated at a press conference at the KPK building in Jakarta, Aug 24. During an impromptu operation conducted by the KPK on Aug 2324, the agency confiscated money and automatic teller machine (ATM) cards from Budionos bags. The agency confiscated three

ATM cards issued by different banks, 33 bags containing money in rupiah, US dollar, pound sterling, euro, and Malaysian ringgit currencies, with a total value of Rp18.9 billion in cash, and an account in Bank Mandiri having a balance of Rp1.174 billion. “Hence, the total money recovered by the KPK in the case is valued at Rp20 billion,” Panjaitan noted. It was suspected that Kurniawan had given the money to Budiono in connection with the dredging project at the Tanjung Mas Port in Semarang, Central Java. “The money is for my operational activities. I have violated the laws. On my behalf, I offer my apology to the public,” Budiono informed the press, explaining that he had spent some of the money on social activities, such as to help orphans and renovate damaged churches and schools, among other things. He denied that some of the money had been channeled to Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi.

The minister is a kind individual and did not know about the money, he explained. Born in Pekalongan, Central Java, in 1958, Bodiono, who has worked as a civil servant for 30 years, was bestowed the “Satyalancana Karya Satya” award last year by the government for his loyalty and dedication. A recipient of the prestigious award is considered to be a national role model. Following his appointment as the director general of sea transportation in August 2016, he had reported to the KPK that his total assets were nearly Rp2.7 billion. Meanwhile, Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi has extended his apologies to the public over the alleged corruption in the ministry. Sumadi vowed to closely supervise and monitor all projects of the ministry. “Earlier, I had focused on monitoring, but in future, I will watch them closely and scrutinize all projects of the ministry,” Sumadi emphasized.

He has urged all ranks of the ministry to eliminate practices of corruption. “Once again I remind all employees of the Ministry of Transportation to eliminate practices of corruption and illegal levies or else they will face criminal sanctions,” Sumadi remarked following the arrest of Budiono. “I am very concerned that since the start, I have been working hard to prevent the Transportation Ministrys officials from engaging in corruption or accepting bribes, but in fact, these illegal practices still exist,” Sumadi stated. He noted that Budionos arrest by the KPK should offer the required momentum to improve consistency in eradicating corruption. “Last year, we had foiled graft attempts in Medan, Jakarta, Surabaya, and Samarinda, with significant findings,” he recalled.
