Social media star Kylie Jenner reported pregnant

LOS ANGELES - Kylie Jenner, the youngest member of the celebrity Kardashian family, was reported on Friday to be pregnant.

Celebrity news website TMZ, People magazine and Buzzfeed all quoted sources as saying that Jenner, 20, the half-sister of Kim Kardashian, is expecting a baby with her boyfriend, the rapper Travis Scott.

Jenner’s representatives could not be reached for comment.

Jenner, who has parlayed her family’s reality TV show and a 97 million Instagram following into a lucrative cosmetics line, later posted a Snapchat photo

in which she appeared to have a baby bump under an oversized black T-shirt.

People magazine, quoting unidentified sources, said the baby was due in February.

“The family has known for quite some time. She is really excited and so is Travis!” the magazine quoted one source as saying.

Another source said to be close to the family told People: “It is an unexpected, but completely amazing turn of events that she could not be more excited or thrilled about.”

Jenner and Scott, 25, have been dating since April. (rtr)

Missoni’s party collection celebrates designer’s 20th anniversary

MILAN - Italian designer Angela Missoni celebrated 20 years at the creative helm of the familyowned knitwear brand with a party-inspired collection, declaring herself proud of having kept the brand relevant over the years.

“I wanted to celebrate my twentieth anniversary given it’s a relevant moment for any designer,” Missoni told reporters at the end of the show.

“So I organised a party and dressed these young boys and girls as though they were going to one,” she added.

Angela Missoni took over from her mother Rosita as creative director of the brand, known for its colourful geometric knit patterns, in 1997. The group was founded by Angela’s parents in 1953.

Missoni said she was very proud of having kept the brand relevant in the fashion industry “despite all the changes and difficulties of the sector”.

“There has certainly been a lot of work... you are never done and changes occur so fast that you are always moving and organising (the

company),” Missoni said.

Colourful as usual, the designs of the collection included seethrough dresses and skirts with matching bra tops, revealing bathing suits worn with short jackets and cardigans, pant suits and bright leggings with iridescent jumpers.

Missoni said that the focus was on lightweight knitwear which resembled chiffon and that many of the designs “had light... so to shine at my party”.

Models wore resin bracelets that recalled the fabrics’ patterns, big dangly geometric earrings and flowers made of fabric as decorations. Many wore wide-brim sun hats.

Men wore colourful shorts or tapered trousers with tops that had motifs that recalled tie-dye t-shirts, with leather slip-ons on their feet.

Milan fashion week runs until Sept. 25, with collections by luxury group Salvatore Ferragamo, Italy’s Trussardi, young designer Stella Jean and world-famous fashion brand Dolce & Gabbana to be showcased in coming days. (rtr)

Thousands evacuated as volcano on holiday island Bali grows more active

KLUNGKUNG - Nearly 35,000 people have been evacuated from near a volcano on the Indonesian holiday island of Bali that officials say is becoming more active and could erupt soon.

Authorities imposed a 12-km exclusion zone around the crater of Mount Agung, as increasing volcanic activity on Sunday sent strong tremors through areas in the eastern part of the one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations.

Officials urged the public to remain calm amid false reports and videos circulating online of an eruption.

“The latest analysis indicates that Mount Agung’s seismic energy is increasing and has the potential to erupt,” the National Vulcanology Center said in a statement. “However, no one can predict exactly when there will be an eruption,” it added.

Flights at Bali’s international airport were operating normally on Sunday as were tourist spots across the rest of the island.

Thousands of evacuees were being housed in makeshift shelters including town halls and school gyms and tents in villages around the volcano, and authorities expect the numbers to climb.

“The biggest challenge is we can’t predict the number of evacuees,” said Putu Widiada, head of the local disaster management agency in Klungkung district.

“If the number of evacuees exceeds our maximum capacity, we have asked that every public hall in the district be prepared to become

evacuation camps.” The shelters were well stocked with food, water, blankets and tents.

The National Disaster Management Agency has sent food and logistical supplies to the area, while also calling for public donations.

Many residents are still making daytime trips to their homes and life is largely continuing as normal in the area.

Some refugees in Klungkung undergo inpatient treatment, one dies

SEMARAPURA —After running for four days, refugees in Klungkung district that must receive medical treatment continue to increase. They are not only handled at the health post, but dozens of people must be rushed to Klungkung Hospital. Some of them have to undergo hospitalization. Moreover, one patient has been declared dead on Sunday afternoon (Sep. 24).

Head of Klungkung Health Agency, Ni Made Adi Swapatni, explained that according to data from September 21 until 13:00, the refugees receiving basic treatment reached 3,168 people. Of those patients, 92 people were referred to hospital for further treatment. Five people got outpatient treatment and 39 others were hospitalized. “If seen, the sick refugees continue to grow every day,” he said.

Refugees suffer from respiratory infections, peptic ulcer and hypertension. Environmental change is the trigger. Nevertheless, the efforts to minimize continue to be done by maximizing existing officers. “Monitoring remains to go on,” he said.

Director of Klungkung Hospital, I Nyoman Kesuma, explained that patients undergoing inpatient treatment mostly consist of the elderly due to shortness of breath. Unfortunately, one refugee, Nengah Rianta, 90, from Perangsari Tengah, Selat Duda, checking in on Saturday afternoon (Sep. 23) was dead last Sunday. “Patient in shocked condition already got intensive care,” he explained. His body, he continued, is still entrusted at hospital.

On Monday afternoon will be brought back to his hometown to be buried.

“Tomorrow, it will be brought home by his family,” he said.

The hospital located on Jalan Flamboyan Semarapura is also still treating a critical refugee. In the meantime, to overcome the presence of subsequent patients, the hospital will provide additional beds temporarily placed in the training and meeting room. “We are going to provide 50 additional beds, while additional paramedics have been coordinated with the provincial government to be assisted,” he said. Dozens of residents from Karangasem treated at mental hospital

BANGLI - After the increasing activity of Mount Agung, dozens of Karangasem residents who suffer from mental disorders are now entrusted to be treated in the Bali Mental Hospital (RSJP) in Bangli. Some of them were picked up directly by RSJP hospital officer, while some others were escorted by health officers of Karangasem. Based on the data collected at RSJP Bali in Bangli on Sunday (Sep. 24), the residents of Karangasem with the refugee status being treated in RSJ Bali totally amount to 17 people. They come from a number of villages such as Bebandem, Abang, Selat, Rendang, Subagan, Besakih and Tenganan and have been hospitalized since September 19.

Nurse Supervisor in charge in the morning, Wayan Suarjaya, accompanied by doctor on duty Eka Yadnya when met last Sunday said that three of the 17 patients currently treated at the RSJP belong to one family. The three were picked up by the RSJ officers to their home at Bebandem village. “We pick them up because one family is mentally disrupted. One of them is the patient in stocks,” he explained.

In the meantime, the other 14 patients were taken to the RSJP by health workers of Karangasem carried out gradually since September 20. They are entrusted to be treated in the RSJP because it is feared to interfere with the activities of other residents if taken to evacuate to refugee camps. Suarjaya stated that among the refugee patients from Karangasem, only seven people belong to new patients. The remaining are old patients that have frequently undergone outpatient treatment.

He also disclosed that when taken to RSJP, only a few of them have owned KIS health insurance card. Nevertheless, the management of RSJP still provides health services according to applicable standards. “So, even though they do not have health insurance, we still give services. Payment matter will be administered later. We will coordinate it with BPJS and related social services,” he said. (kmb40)

Govt confused to evacuate 20,000 people’s cattle

EVACUATION of the cattle belonging to residents on the slopes of Mount Agung remains to leave a problem. There has been no official measure taken by the government and the disaster preparedness task force to resolve the problem. The Head of the Bali Livestock Agency, Putu Sumantra, said on Saturday (Sep. 23) that he is still waiting for guidance from central government to coordinate with local government. Totally, the cattle reach about 20,000 heads.

He said the total population of cattle around the slopes of Mount Agung actually reaches 30,000 heads. About 10,000 heads are said to have been evacuated by residents and sold cheaply.

Now, he is confused to evacuate such amount of remaining cattle how to evacuate, what to use to evacuate and who to involve. In the meantime, the areas where the cattle are located are not allowed to be entered.

He admitted that cattle become the life support for people on the slopes of Mount Agung, such as Jungutan, Besakih, Ban and Sebudi village. The majority of locals survive from raising cattle.

Thus, when the price of livestock drops in this situation, local people are very upset. However, he himself claimed to have no option to evacuate. “As planned, one of the director generals of central government will meet the regent

of Karangasem,” said Sumantra.

Head of the National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB), Willem Rampangilei, in the coordination meeting with a number of related agencies in Wantilan of Karangasem government on Saturday (Sep. 24) said that he will further discuss about cattle evacuation. Currently, the most urgent is certainly to evacuate all the residents living within dangerous radius from the peak of Mount Agung to the refugee camps. It also immediately persuades people that are not willing to evacuate so they can leave their home village immediately.

“We must be able to do our best to prevent the worst thing for residents,” he said.

Some refugees from Tanah Aron hamlet met at Tenganan Pegringsingan village admitted to be anxious with the fate of their cattle. Some residents are no lon-

ger allowed to enter Tanah Aron hamlet, Bhuana Giri, Bebandem, by the officers because the area is already prone to disaster. “I can hardly sleep due to thinking about my cattle at home, let alone I have not fed them for two days,” said a resident named Ketut Saputra.

They hoped there are private parties or volunteers that can facilitate to evacuate their cattle.

In total, there are about 50 heads remaining to be left at Tanah Aron. Actually, if anyone wants to evacuate, the Tenganan Pegringsingan customary village has prepared enough land to accommodate temporarily people’s cattle. “Here, there is a large enough land if anyone is willing to evacuate, we are ready to accommodate temporarily here,” said Wayan Arsana, a village apparatus of Tenganan Pegringsingan customary village. Deep sleep: Even jellyfish need their slumber WASHINGTON - Even a jellyfish -- one of Earth’s first and most ancient animals -- needs its sleep.

Scientists said on Thursday they have demonstrated that a primitive type of jellyfish called Cassiopea goes to sleep nightly.

While sleep has been confirmed in other invertebrates such as worms and fruit flies, the jellyfish is the most evolutionarily ancient animal that has been shown to slumber.

“These results suggest that even those animals that lack a centralized nervous system require sleep, which means that sleep is one of the most ancient behavioral states, deeply rooted within the animal lineage,” California Institute of Technology biologist Ravi Nath said.

Jellyfish have thrived in the seas for at least 600 million years, longer than nearly any other animal. By comparison, dinosaurs appeared roughly 230 million years ago and humans appeared roughly 300,000 years ago. The findings involving such a primordial creature raise fresh questions about sleep’s origin and purpose.

“We do not know if sleep is limited to just animals,” said Nath, who helped lead the study published in the journal Current Biology.

“Sleep is a genetically encoded behavioral state. Genes and neural circuits interact to generate the sleep state,” Nath added.

“I think it would be hard to demonstrate a sleep state in an organism that is not an animal, but I think the sleep state that we know may have been co-opted from periods of quiescence in organisms as diverse as plants, bacteria and fungi.”

Jellyfish are among the first animals to have developed neurons -- nerve cells -- though they lack a brain, spine or central nervous system.

Cassiopea jellyfish live in clear, shallow, tropical waters of the Pacific and western Atlantic oceans, eating plankton. Measuring about 1-2 inches (2.5-5 cm) in diameter, they are dubbed the “upside-down jellyfish” because they lie on the seafloor inverted in the water with their tentacles upward.

Through lab experiments, the researchers determined Cassiopea met three important sleep criteria: periods of decreased activity known as behavioral quiescence; a decreased response to stimuli; and an increased sleep drive after being sleep deprived. (rtr)

Feeling crabby: Plant-eating dinosaurs snacked on crustaceans

WASHINGTON - Some plant-eating dinosaurs apparently liked a side order of crabs to go with their usual salad. Scientists said on Thursday fossilized dung thought to have come from herbivorous duck-billed dinosaurs that inhabited southern Utah 75 million years ago contained pieces of crustacean shells along with vestiges of vegetation.

The discovery provides the strongest evidence to date that some large herbivorous dinosaurs sometimes strayed from a purely vegetarian diet, said University of Colorado paleontologist Karen Chin, who led the research published in the journal Scientific Reports.

“This was a very exciting discovery, precisely because it was so unexpected,” Chin said.

Fossilized dung, called coprolites, offers insight into the diet of extinct creatures that cannot be gleaned by merely studying teeth, jaws and skeletons.

Ten coprolites from Utah’s Grand Staircase-Escalante National M o nument contained crustacean shells mixed with rotted coniferous wood. For at least part of the year these duck-billed dinosaurs may have munched on rotting logs because they contained stores of crusta-

ceans and other invertebrates, Chin said.

Chin said the researchers do not know precisely what types of crustaceans were eaten by the dinosaurs, but it was possible they were crabs. A variety of crustaceans also including crayfish and pillbugs are known to shelter in the moist environments of rotting logs. The crustaceans were at least two inches (5 cm) long.

“Rotting wood and fungal tissues would have offered useful nutritional compounds such as cellulose and fiber, and the crustaceans would have provided good sources of protein and calcium. Protein is an important component of animal diets, and is particularly important when animals are breeding,” Chin said.

The researchers think eating crustaceans may have been a seasonal dietary change linked to breeding and egg-laying. Some

birds, the evolutionary descendants of dinosaurs, consume more protein and calcium during breeding season.

Duck-billed dinosaurs, also called hadrosaurs, earned their name because the front of their skull resembles a duck’s bill.

They also possessed beaks and specialized teeth for grinding plant material, and are believed to have roamed the landscape in herds.

Two hadrosaurs that lived in the area at the time were: Parasaurolophus, roughly 33 feet (10 meters) long with a long tubular head crest; and Gryposaurus, about 39 feet (12 meters) long with an arched nasal crest.

Hadrosaurs were common in western North America and other parts of the world during the Cretaceous Period, representing an important plant-eating group alongside armored dinosaurs and horned dinosaurs. (rtr)

To muffle anxiety, women at refugee camps make offerings

GIANYAR — To muffle anxiety from disaster shadows of Mount Agung, most of the women at refugee camp of Sutasoma Square, Sukawati, chose to spend time with mejejahitan (making offerings) on Sunday (Sep. 24).

Ni Wayan Temi, a refugee from Karangasem town, admitted to be happy to do such activity with other refugees. Especially since a few days ago, she is just pensive to think about the impact of Mount Agung disaster. “Since four days ago, I have stunned as having no activity. I am grateful because at the location have been provided with slepan (green

coconut leaf). Indeed, here is the work of women. We can use this to say prayer from here,” he explained.

The type of offerings made is simple in the form of celemik and ceper made from green coconut leaves (slepan). Related to the results of the jejaitan, Ni Wayan Tami said it will be used for worship. “We will use this to say prayers in the

hope that disaster will end soon,” she hoped.

Chief of the SMAN 1 Sukawati Alumni Association (Ikasusksma), A.A. Eka Kusumawathi, as coordinator of the mejejahitan activity said that refugees need an interlude activity to forget for a moment their hometown atmosphere having been hit by repeated earthquakes. “I

think with this mejejahitan activity will encourage them. They can mutually share stories with other relatives. Thus, they can kill time in refugee camps,” he explained.

In the meantime, at the health post of Sutasoma Square, Sukawati, there are 58 refugees having checked up their health. Volunteer doctor, I Made Suwita, who is the Legal and Credential Division Head of the Indonesian Medical Association (IDI) of Gianyar district, said that most refugees

are contracted by acute respiratory infections (ISPA). “I have not recapitulated yet their medical record but in general some have complained about dizziness, cough and cold,” he explained.

He also ensured that drug availability is also complete at the health post. “All drugs have been covered by health agency. We are also on guard for 24 hours in turn. There are about 5 medical personnel from health centers in Gianyar in charge for each shift,” he said. (kmb35)

Indonesia, largest digital economic market in ASEAN JAKARTA — The development of creative industry potential including digital economy in Indonesia is very large. The government predicts in the next three years, the digital economy in the country can grow significantly. Based on calculation of the ministry of communications and informatics, the digital economy of Indonesia in 2020 can penetrate USD 130 billion or IDR 1,700 trillion.

This was expressed by President Joko Widodo at the opening of the Indonesia Business & Development Expo in Jakarta on Wednesday (Sep. 20).

According to president, that amount is equivalent to 20 percent of total Gross Domestic Product (GDP)

of Indonesia. Such amount makes Indonesia the largest digital economic market in the ASEAN region. “Of course, the changes and potential of the digital economy in Indonesia inevitably brings in behavioral changes to consumer society of Indonesia,” said Jokowi.

He said currently there is a shift in lifestyle, consumption patterns and production in most Indonesian communities. In the past, Indonesian people only did business offline, but now they have switched to using online (internet) facilities.

BANGLI - The children of Karangasem origin who became refugees of Gunung Agung disaster, began to follow the learning process at the nearest school on Monday (Sep. 25). Due to emergency conditions and situations, most of them went to school without uniforms and stationery.

Based on data collected from Disdikpora Bangli District, refugee children attend school at elementary and junior high school level. In Bangli districts, there are 179 refugees who study in dozens of primary schools. While in Kecamatan Tembuku, there are 213 primary school refugee children. In Kecamatan Susut, 41 children are enrolled in nine elementary schools.

As for junior high school level, the number of refugee children who recorded the learning process yesterday as many as 172 people.

Secretary Disdikpora Bangli Nyoman Sedana said children who become refugees to learn without using school uniforms due to the limited conditions, most of them choose to go to school using clean clothes.

For the needs of stationery, they are assisted by their respective schools. ‘’ From the results of our monitoring in some schools, they can still follow the learning process as usual, ‘’ he said.

Japan’s Abe announces snap election amid worries over North Korea

TOKYO - Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said he would dissolve parliament’s lower house on Thursday for a snap election, seeking a mandate to stick to his tough stance towards a volatile North Korea and rebalance the social security system.

Abe, in power for five years, had been expected to call the election for next month to take advantage of improved support and disarray in the opposition camp.

“I’ll demonstrate strong leadership and stand at the forefront to face a national crisis,” Abe told reporters, mentioning Japan’s fast-ageing population and North Korea.

“This is my responsibility as leader and my mission as prime minister.”

Natsuo Yamaguchi, the head of Abe’s junior coalition partner the Komeito party, said he understood the election would be on Oct. 22.

Abe said he would redirect some revenue from a planned sales tax hike in 2019 to child care and education rather than paying back public debt, although he added he would not abandon fiscal reform.

Rebalancing the spending would offset the potential negative effect on consumption from the tax rise, he said.

“We will turn Japan’s social se-

curity system into one that responds to all generations by boldly diverting policy resources to resolve the two major concerns -- child rearing and (elderly) nursing care – that working generations confront,” he said.

Abe rejected criticism that holding an election now would create a political vacuum at a time of rising tension over North Korea’s missile and nuclear arms programme. Pyongyang has fired ballistic missiles over Japan twice in the last month and conducted its sixth and biggest nuclear test on Sept. 3 “We must not give in to North Korea’s threats. By gaining a mandate from the people with this election, I will forge ahead with strong diplomacy,” Abe said, adding that now was the time to put more pressure on Pyongyang, not open dialogue.

Abe, whose ratings have risen to around 50 percent from around 30 percent in July, is gambling his ruling bloc can keep its lower house majority even if it loses the twothirds “super majority” needed to achieve his long-held goal of revising the post-war pacifist constitution to clarify the military’s role.

The Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) insurgent group denied killing the Hindus saying it did not attack civilians.

The latest violence in western Myanmar’s Rakhine State began on Aug. 25 when ARSA militants attacked about 30 police posts and an army camp, killing about 12 people.

The United Nations has described as ethnic cleansing a sweeping government offensive in the north of Rakhine State in response to those attacks.

The government of Buddhist-majority Myanmar has said more than 400 people have been killed, most of them insurgents. It rejects accusations of ethnic cleansing, saying it is fighting terrorists.

Members of the small Hindu minority appear to have been caught in the middle. Some have fled to Bangladesh, complaining of violence against them by soldiers or Buddhist vigilantes. Others have complained of being attacked by the insurgents on suspi-

cion of being government spies.

The government said a search was mounted near Ye Baw Kya village in the north of Rakhine State after a refugee in Bangladesh contacted a Hindu community leader in Myanmar. The refugee said about 300 ARSA militants had marched about 100 people out of the village on Aug. 25 and killed them.

Twenty of the dead were female and eight were male children, the government said.

“They forced eight female villagers to convert to the Islamic religion and took them to Bangladesh,” the government said.

A government spokesman, Zaw Htay, said the security forces were investigating.

Access to the area by journalists as well as human rights workers and aid workers is largely restricted and Reuters could not independently verify the report.

An ARSA spokesman said he believed Buddhist nationalists trying to divide Hindus and Muslims were behind the “lies” that ARSA militants had killed the villagers.

“ARSA has internationally pledged not to target civilians and that remains unchanged no matter what,” the spokesman, who is based in a neighbouring country and identified himself only as Abdullah, told Reuters through a messaging service. (rtr)

LONDON - The single currency and European stocks slipped on Monday after the bloc’s most powerful leader German Chancellor Angela Merkel won a fourth term but faced a fractured parliament as support for the far-right surged. Investors were unnerved by the prospect of months of coalition talks which could distract from negotiations with Britain over its divorce from the European Union and efforts to integrate the bloc’s remaining members.

Political uncertainty also weakened the New Zealand dollar as the ruling National Party won the largest number votes in a weekend election but failed to secure a ruling majority, with a protracted period of coalition building now a possibility. “Merkel’s most pressing task now is not to knit Europe closer together. It’s to form a coalition which will prove to be extremely difficult and time-consuming,” said Oliver Rakau, chief German economist at Oxford Economics.

The euro slid 0.3 percent to $1.1918, putting more distance between a 2-1/2-year high of $1.2092 reached on Sept. 8, when a European Central Bank policy meeting left currency bulls optimistic the ECB would begin tapering its big stimulus programme.

Euro zone stock markets were down 0.3 percent, although falls were more pronounced in Asia where equity markets were hit by concerns over the economic health of the world’s second biggest economy China. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was last down 0.8 percent.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was down 1.3 percent and Shanghai slipped 0.4 percent after a number of Chinese cities rolled out new measures to cool housing prices.

Investor sentiment was also undermined by concerns that China’s beefed-up environmental protection could reduce demand, and consequently economic growth.

FEW OPTIONS

In European debt markets, the focus was firmly on the German election where the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD) stunned the establishment by becoming the first far-right party to enter parliament in more than half a

century. All parties have ruled out a coalition with the AfD and Merkel’s only straightforward path to a majority in parliament is a three-way tie-up with the liberal Free Democrats (FDP) and the Greens - an arrangement untested at national level.

Investors bought German government bonds on the result - seen as one of the safest stores of cash in the euro zone - and sold lower-rated debt in the likes of Portugal, Spain and Italy.

Overall the market moves were fairly modest, however, and some analysts said investors may have used the result as an excuse to sell the euro which was moving lower before the vote.

“The euro...was already losing support from the European Central Bank’s monetary policy theme and appeared to be on its way lower,” said Daisuke Karakama, chief market economist at Mizuho Bank in Tokyo.

In New Zealand, the kiwi, the world 11th most-traded currency, was down 0.7 percent at $0.7288 and set for its biggest daily drop in around a month. It was at a 1-1/2-month high of $0.7435 as recently as Sept. 20, when speculation for a comfortable ruling party win had boosted the currency. “While there are a few different scenarios and some potentially testy issues to negotiate, ultimately the political landscape appears as though it will remain relatively centralist and we are reasonably agnostic on what it all means,” wrote economists at ANZ. The British pound edged up 0.3 percent to $1.3541, bouncing back from a slide on Friday when ratings agency Moody’s downgraded its credit rating. The dollar was up 0.2 percent against a basket of six major currencies at 92.397.

The greenback added 0.3 percent at 112.27 yen, reversing losses suffered on Friday when the exchange of insults between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korea heated up, sapping broader risk appetite.

Oil prices consolidated after surging on Friday, when OPEC and other oil producers said they were clearing a glut that has weighed on crude prices and may wait until January before deciding whether to extend their output curbs beyond the first quarter of 2018.

Brent crude futures was down 0.2 percent at $56.73 a barrel, not far from a 6-1/2-month high of $56.91 set on Friday.

EU seeks more protection for Uber-style jobs

BRUSSELS - The European Commission wants more social protection and rights for casual workers, such as those in the “gig economy”, and others with non-standard contracts to try to tackle growing social inequality.

The Commission’s consultation document on these plans, seen by Reuters, is part of a broader reworking of the EU’s economic priorities, after pressure from populist forces that accuse Brussels of having pursued ultra-liberal policies to the detriment of workers.

The document proposes a substantial review of EU’s social rights that could partly limit workers’ flexibility and reduce the growing insecurity caused by new types of jobs offered by firms like Uber and food-delivery service Deliveroo.

Brussels is proposing to extend full social protection and other forms of security to all workers, including those on very short-term, part-time and zero-hour contracts who in some EU member countries have lower safeguards.

Most EU workers have full-time, permanent contracts, but a growing number of people, especially the young, have jobs with ultra-flexible working hours, no regular pay and fewer employment protections.

They accounted for more than one third of the total workforce in the 28-country bloc in 2015 and that share is growing, the commission said in the consultation paper to be presented on Monday.

Most of these employees have to work under these conditions in absence of alternatives, the document said.

Non-standard workers tend to have lower levels of social and health security and some new contracts, such as casual or voucher-based work, are even more worrying, the commission’s document said.

The Commission’s proposals could raise costs for companies like Uber, which is already facing legal disputes in several EU countries and has not had its licence renewed in London. .

CASUAL?

The Commission is proposing that workers should be properly informed about the conditions of their employment and should be given explanations by their employers for not having a permanent contract after a few years in the same job.

Casual workers should also be entitled to a minimum number of guaranteed hours “after a predefined continuous period,” the Commission said.

But the enhanced protection would not be applicable to self-employed workers, which could provide a loophole for employers such as Uber and Deliveroo.

Uber says its drivers are self-employed, although in Britain this categorisation has recently been challenged by the government.

Other non-standard work contracts, such as paid traineeships and temporary agency work, are also under the Commission’s scrutiny as they “continue to present challenges from the point of view of job security and adequate working conditions,” the consultation document said.

To reduce abuses linked to these forms of contracts, Brussels wants to introduce a maximum duration of employee probation.

The Commission will initially discuss its plans with trade unions and employers, followed by legislative proposals. (rtr)

Polish president unveils court reform in democratic litmus test WARSAW - Polish President Andrzej Duda is set to unveil proposals on Monday for judiciary reform viewed by the European Union and critics of the government as a crucial gauge of Warsaw’s adherence to rule-of-law standards.

Duda, an ally of the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party, unexpectedly vetoed its overhaul of the judiciary in July after the proposals triggered nationwide protests and raised EU and U.S. concerns about a politicisation of the courts.

The eurosceptic PiS says reform of the judicial system is needed because the courts are slow, inefficient and steeped in a communist-era mentality, but critics of the plans say the new rules are part of a bigger drive towards authoritarianism.

It is unclear to what extent Duda’s alternative draft legislation will allay critics’ concerns or meet government expectations, but both sides may need to compromise for the laws to be agreed.

The PiS’s powerful leader, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, held a meeting with Duda on Friday and emerged to declare himself “optimistic”.

“The road to an agreement is open and I don’t think it will be a particularly difficult road,” Kaczynski was quoted as saying by state-controlled broadcaster TVP. Under the vetoed reforms, all current Supreme Court judges would have been removed immediately unless they had the approval of the justice minister, who is also prosecutor general.

Parliament, meanwhile, would have been granted the right to name most of the National Council of the Judiciary, which would nominate future candidates to preside over the Supreme Court.

Any progress or otherwise is being watched closely in Brussels, where other EU members are considering potential punishment for the nationalist PiS cabinet over democratic standards.

EU PRESSURE The EU is applying mounting pressure on the PiS and a meeting of EU ministers on Monday aims to measure the appetite for unprecedented action against Warsaw.

Since coming to power, PiS has not only increased government influence over the courts but has also brought prosecutors and state media under direct government control and introduced some restrictions on public gathering. It denies retreating on democracy.

It argues that it has a broad mandate to implement reforms and that its policies aim to improve a poorly functioning state, bolster Poland’s standing in the global arena, preserve its conservative values and correct mistakes by previous governments that were too dependent on foreign influence.

In proposing his own judiciary rules, Duda is likely to weigh their potential impact on his re-election prospects in 2020. Though he remains Poland’s most popular politician, with approval ratings of more than 70 percent, Duda may need PiS support to win enough votes. (rtr)

Outside quake stricken Mexico City, most kids going back to school

MEXICO CITY - Most schools in Mexico City remained closed on Monday after last week’s deadly earthquake, but children outside the capital were set to return to their classrooms, although aftershocks were still jolting the country.

Search operations in the Mexican capital were narrowed to a handful of buildings destroyed by the 7.1 magnitude earthquake last Tuesday that killed at least 320 people.

The quake rendered thousands of people homeless with many of them living in tents in the streets or emergency shelters, but there were signs that the 20 million people living the greater metropolitan area were gradually resuming their routines.

“Our neighborhood is in mourning,” said Deborah Levy, 44, from trendy Condesa district that was among the worst hit.

“Some neighbors and friends got together (Sunday). We went to eat to cheer ourselves up, looking for a little normality.”

Some of the most affected neighborhoods, those built on top of a soft ancient lake bed, still had entire blocks cordoned off.

More than 44,000 schools in six states were due to reopen on Monday, but only 103 of them in Mexico City, which suffered most of the fatalities.

Officials said they did not want to impede relief efforts, so more than 4,000 public schools and nearly as many private

schools in the capital will remain closed for now.

The National Autonomous University of Mexico, with 350,000 students at campuses in and around Mexico City, will resume classes on Monday.

Of 6,000 damaged buildings, some 1,500 have yet to be inspected, said Horacio Urbano, president of Centro Urbano, a think tank specializing in urban issues and real estate.

Ten percent of the damaged buildings were constructed after 1990, by which time strict building codes had been enacted in the wake of the 1985 earthquake that killed some 10,000 people.

Search operations, using advanced audio equipment to detect signs of life beneath tonnes of rubble, continued at a few buildings with help from teams from as far afield as Israel and Japan.

At a school in southern Mexico City where 19 children and six adults had been reported killed, officials recovered the body an adult woman on Sunday.

The search for survivors continued in a ruined office building in the Roma neighborhood and in a five-story apartment building in historic Tlalpan.

Authorities called off efforts in the upper-middle class Lindavista zone after pulling 10 bodies from the rubble over several days, and work at the Tlalpan building was briefly halted on Saturday by a magnitude 6.2 aftershock.

Another 5.7 aftershock struck on Sunday off the west coast, jolting southwestern Mexico, and seismologists predicted more tremors to come.

While aid and volunteer workers have flooded into the accessible districts of Mexico City, people in more remote neighborhoods and surrounding states have received less attention.

Miguel Angel Luna, a 40-year old architect, joined a caravan of civilians that headed out late last week to help isolated communities scattered around the base of the Popocatepetl volcano in the state of Morelos.

Around 40 percent of the adobe homes he saw in poor villages had been completely destroyed and some 80 percent were heavily damaged, Luna said.

“We’re talking about very poor communities,” Luna said.

MEDAN - The construction of Trans Sumatra railway lines is scheduled to be completed at the end of 2019, Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said.

“The project has always been monitored to ensure that it will be completed on schedule. As President Joko Widodo expects, (the construction of) Trans Sumatra railway lines will be completed in 2019,” he said here on Sunday.

The construction of railway tracks linking Medan to Langkat and Aceh will receive priority in the construction of Trans Sumatra railway lines, he said.

He made it clear that the construction of Trans Sumatra railway lines is high on the list of the central governments priorities.

“As it is a national strategic project, it must be completed thoroughly. The realization of the project is just a matter of time,” he said.

Chief of the Traffic and Safety Section of the North Sumatra Train Technical Station Iskandar said the construction of Trans Sumatra lines is underway.

The construction of Binjai-Besitang,Langkat, Besitang-Sei Liput, and Rantau Prapat-Pinang City railways tracks is still underway, he said. The construction of the railway tracks will be completed in 2019 as scheduled, he said.(ant)

VIENTIANE - The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Vientiane organized a batik workshop for Laotians at the Vientiane Center Mall as part of a series of activities to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Indonesia-Laos relations.

“Batik making has been chosen, as it is rooted in Indonesian culture and technically easy to do.

We want to intensively promote Indonesian culture in Laos,” Wishnu Krisnamurthi, chairman of the committee in charge of holding the event to mark the 60th anniversary of Indonesia-Laos relations, stated here on Monday.

The Indonesian Embassy in Vientiane has roped in Indonesian batik designers to teach the participants at the workshop.

“They (Laotians) are very interested in Indonesian batik. Laos has a distinctive culture of beautiful woven fabric, but not everyone can weave, and weaving as an activity is not as easy as batik making,” he explained.

The batik workshop was attended by some 70 Laotian participants from the Laos art school, art galleries in Laos, Lao ethnic art organization, and local people visiting the Vientiane Center Mall.

“I think batik making is a very enjoyable activity.

I love to use canting (a spouted tool used to apply liquid wax) on a cloth to paint batik,” Khamheng Phommasy, one of the batik workshops participants from the Lao Art Institute, remarked. Phommasy claimed to be interested in Indonesian batik due to its unique and diverse hues.

“The most important aspect is that I love Indonesian batik since I like to design it on cotton fabric,” Phommasy said.(ant)

Jokowi calls for introduction of modern farming

SALATIGA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has indicated that it is time to introduce Indonesian farmers to modern system of farming to bring them into better life.

“Modernization is what we need. I have told the Agriculture Minister to move that way step by step,” Jokowi said when meeting a farmer association Qaryah Thayyibah (SPPQT) in Kalibening, Salatiga, Central Java on Monday.

He said building water reservoirs, dams and other irrigation systems is the governments duty, but if the farmers did not react positively to the government

initiative, they would never be better than they are now.

He said the farmers should not think only about planting and harvesting as the biggest part of the profit is in the process of agribusiness.

“The Qaryah Thayyibah has taken the right step by consolidating farmers in big group,” he said.

He said he hopes the group of farmers did not think only about the right time for

planting and seeking seeds, and fertilizing their crops.

“But they also should be in charge of post harvest activities as the biggest profit is there. Therefore, consolidation should lead to the forming of organization as a farm corporation,” he said.

They would then produce the fertilizer they need, building big fertilizer factory , and they should have their own rice mills and rice threshing machines.

The farmers should be able to handle their marketing that the entire profit of the farming industry would go to the farmers, he said.(ant)

BERLIN - Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge staved off a surprise challenge from Ethiopian debutant Guye Adola to win an enthralling Berlin marathon on Sunday, but missed out on his bid to set a new world record.

Prior to the race, Kipchoge, fellow Kenyan Wilson Kipsang and Ethiopia’s Kenenisa Bekele had all set their sights on breaking Dennis Kimetto’s leading marathon mark of two hours, two minutes and 57 seconds along the flat, inner-city course.

Instead, Kipchoge ended up becoming embroiled in a classic tussle with the 26-year-old Adola, making his marathon debut, and needed until the 41st kilometre of the damp course to shake off his last surviving rival and cross the line in 2:03:32.

Adola finished 14 seconds adrift of the winner, with his Ethiopian compatriot Mosinet Geremew finishing third in 2:06:09.

Kipchoge’s victory was his second in Berlin and Gladys Cherono helped recreate the roll of honour from 2015, with the Kenyan winning the women’s race in 2:20:23 to also record a second win in the event.

“I am happy to have run this race. The conditions were not friendly because of the rain,” Kipchoge told reporters. “Luckily there was not strong wind.

“I didn’t expect Adolo but I am happy for him. This is sport.”

The star-studded trio made their

intentions clear from the start, running at a blistering early pace that was well inside the time Kenya’s Kimetto set in the same race three years ago.

The rainy conditions soon took their toll, however, and the elite men had drifted outside world record pace by the 12km mark.

Reaching halfway in 61:29, Bekele was the first of the big names to fall back, his bid to become the first man to hold the 5,000m, 10,000m and marathon world records dashed in the spray kicked up from Kipsang and Kipchoge as they sped away.

Former world record holder Kipsang was the next to run out of steam and walked off the course shortly after the 30km mark, setting the stage for a stunning duel between Kipchoge and Adola.

Adola was determined to upstage the favourite and attempted an audacious bid to break clear after 37km but Kipchoge kept his cool and caught back up with the Ethiopian four minutes later.

A revived Kipchoge then surged clear of Adola as they approached the iconic Brandenburg Gate, leaving the rookie with the consolation of setting the fastest ever debut time on a record-eligible course.

Cherono was unchallenged en route to her second win in the German capital but was a minute slower than two years ago. Ruti Aga of Ethiopia was second, 19 seconds behind, and Kenya’s Valary Aiyabei was third. (rtr)

Despite cruising through the first two days, the Europeans needed the last match to finalise the victory and show the dominance expected from a team featuring five of the world’s top seven players.

Federer delivered in a tight 4-6 7-6(6) 11-9 win over world number 20 Nick Kyrgios, with the Australian pushing to the final point as he sought a win that would have forced an overtime doubles match to decide the tournament.

But Kyrgios squandered a chance at match point and then smashed the ball into the net to end the battle, spurring Federer’s European team mates, led by topranked Rafael Nadal, to leap off the bench and embrace the Swiss at the net.

“I was ready to go. I had to be. That is what a team member does. The boys played fantastic all weekend

but we knew it could change very quickly on Sunday,” Federer said.

“I was looking at getting ready maybe for doubles at the end... But I got it done.”

An earlier victory from big-hitting German Alexander Zverev also helped fight off the last-day comeback from Team World, which entered the day 9-3 down after dropping six of the first eight matches.

With matches worth three points on Sunday - versus two on Saturday and one on Friday - the group battled back with Americans John Isner and Jack Sock downing Croatian Marin Cilic and Czech Tomas Berdych, who was playing in front of the hometown crowd at Prague’s O2 Arena.

The American duo limited the hard-serving Europeans to three aces in a 7-6(5) 7-6(6) victory.

“You cannot sacrifice deliberately any

competition with the pressure that every club is under now,” Wenger told reporters ahead of Arsenal’s home match against West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League on Monday.

“You know that you could pay the price sometimes for it because you know that if you go further in the League Cup, at some stage you play in the semi-final – home and away in January. “(So) you have the FA Cup, the Premier League and sometimes you lose players in these competitions.”

Wenger is set to face left back Kieran Gibbs, who returns with West Brom at the Emirates for the first time since leaving Arsenal in the transfer window.

“Villarreal have decided to terminate the contract of Fran Escriba as first-team coach,” the club said in a statement. “In the coming hours, the club will name who the new Villarreal coach will be.”

Villarreal were promoted to Spain’s top flight in 1998 and 10 years later finished runners-up to Real Madrid in their best league campaign.

The team nicknamed “Yellow Submarine” suffered a shock relegation in 2012 but were immediately promoted the following year and have played in the Europa League each season since.

BERLIN - Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge staved off a surprise challenge from Ethiopian debutant Guye Adola to win an enthralling Berlin marathon on Sunday, but missed out on his bid to set a new world record.

Prior to the race, Kipchoge, fellow Kenyan Wilson Kipsang and Ethiopia’s Kenenisa Bekele had all set their sights on breaking Dennis Kimetto’s leading marathon mark of two hours, two minutes and 57 seconds along the flat, inner-city course.

Instead, Kipchoge ended up becoming embroiled in a classic tussle with the 26-year-old Adola, making his marathon debut, and needed until the 41st kilometre of the damp course to shake off his last surviving rival and cross the line in 2:03:32.

Adola finished 14 seconds adrift of the winner, with his Ethiopian compatriot Mosinet Geremew finishing third in 2:06:09.

Kipchoge’s victory was his second in Berlin and Gladys Cherono helped recreate the roll of honour from 2015, with the Kenyan winning the women’s race in 2:20:23 to also record a second win in the event.

“I am happy to have run this race. The conditions were not friendly because of the rain,” Kipchoge told reporters. “Luckily there was not strong wind.

“I didn’t expect Adolo but I am happy for him. This is sport.”

The star-studded trio made their

intentions clear from the start, running at a blistering early pace that was well inside the time Kenya’s Kimetto set in the same race three years ago.

The rainy conditions soon took their toll, however, and the elite men had drifted outside world record pace by the 12km mark.

Reaching halfway in 61:29, Bekele was the first of the big names to fall back, his bid to become the first man to hold the 5,000m, 10,000m and marathon world records dashed in the spray kicked up from Kipsang and Kipchoge as they sped away.

Former world record holder Kipsang was the next to run out of steam and walked off the course shortly after the 30km mark, setting the stage for a stunning duel between Kipchoge and Adola.

Adola was determined to upstage the favourite and attempted an audacious bid to break clear after 37km but Kipchoge kept his cool and caught back up with the Ethiopian four minutes later.

A revived Kipchoge then surged clear of Adola as they approached the iconic Brandenburg Gate, leaving the rookie with the consolation of setting the fastest ever debut time on a record-eligible course.

Cherono was unchallenged en route to her second win in the German capital but was a minute slower than two years ago. Ruti Aga of Ethiopia was second, 19 seconds behind, and Kenya’s Valary Aiyabei was third. (rtr)

Despite cruising through the first two days, the Europeans needed the last match to finalise the victory and show the dominance expected from a team featuring five of the world’s top seven players.

Federer delivered in a tight 4-6 7-6(6) 11-9 win over world number 20 Nick Kyrgios, with the Australian pushing to the final point as he sought a win that would have forced an overtime doubles match to decide the tournament.

But Kyrgios squandered a chance at match point and then smashed the ball into the net to end the battle, spurring Federer’s European team mates, led by topranked Rafael Nadal, to leap off the bench and embrace the Swiss at the net.

“I was ready to go. I had to be. That is what a team member does. The boys played fantastic all weekend

but we knew it could change very quickly on Sunday,” Federer said.

“I was looking at getting ready maybe for doubles at the end... But I got it done.”

An earlier victory from big-hitting German Alexander Zverev also helped fight off the last-day comeback from Team World, which entered the day 9-3 down after dropping six of the first eight matches.

With matches worth three points on Sunday - versus two on Saturday and one on Friday - the group battled back with Americans John Isner and Jack Sock downing Croatian Marin Cilic and Czech Tomas Berdych, who was playing in front of the hometown crowd at Prague’s O2 Arena.

The American duo limited the hard-serving Europeans to three aces in a 7-6(5) 7-6(6) victory.

Polish president unveils court reform in democratic litmus test WARSAW - Polish President Andrzej Duda is set to unveil proposals on Monday for judiciary reform viewed by the European Union and critics of the government as a crucial gauge of Warsaw’s adherence to rule-of-law standards.

Duda, an ally of the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party, unexpectedly vetoed its overhaul of the judiciary in July after the proposals triggered nationwide protests and raised EU and U.S. concerns about a politicisation of the courts.

The eurosceptic PiS says reform of the judicial system is needed because the courts are slow, inefficient and steeped in a communist-era mentality, but critics of the plans say the new rules are part of a bigger drive towards authoritarianism.

It is unclear to what extent Duda’s alternative draft legislation will allay critics’ concerns or meet government expectations, but both sides may need to compromise for the laws to be agreed.

The PiS’s powerful leader, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, held a meeting with Duda on Friday and emerged to declare himself “optimistic”.

“The road to an agreement is open and I don’t think it will be a particularly difficult road,” Kaczynski was quoted as saying by state-controlled broadcaster TVP. Under the vetoed reforms, all current Supreme Court judges would have been removed immediately unless they had the approval of the justice minister, who is also prosecutor general.

Parliament, meanwhile, would have been granted the right to name most of the National Council of the Judiciary, which would nominate future candidates to preside over the Supreme Court.

Any progress or otherwise is being watched closely in Brussels, where other EU members are considering potential punishment for the nationalist PiS cabinet over democratic standards.

EU PRESSURE The EU is applying mounting pressure on the PiS and a meeting of EU ministers on Monday aims to measure the appetite for unprecedented action against Warsaw.

Since coming to power, PiS has not only increased government influence over the courts but has also brought prosecutors and state media under direct government control and introduced some restrictions on public gathering. It denies retreating on democracy.

It argues that it has a broad mandate to implement reforms and that its policies aim to improve a poorly functioning state, bolster Poland’s standing in the global arena, preserve its conservative values and correct mistakes by previous governments that were too dependent on foreign influence.

In proposing his own judiciary rules, Duda is likely to weigh their potential impact on his re-election prospects in 2020. Though he remains Poland’s most popular politician, with approval ratings of more than 70 percent, Duda may need PiS support to win enough votes. (rtr)

Outside quake stricken Mexico City, most kids going back to school

MEXICO CITY - Most schools in Mexico City remained closed on Monday after last week’s deadly earthquake, but children outside the capital were set to return to their classrooms, although aftershocks were still jolting the country.

Search operations in the Mexican capital were narrowed to a handful of buildings destroyed by the 7.1 magnitude earthquake last Tuesday that killed at least 320 people.

The quake rendered thousands of people homeless with many of them living in tents in the streets or emergency shelters, but there were signs that the 20 million people living the greater metropolitan area were gradually resuming their routines.

“Our neighborhood is in mourning,” said Deborah Levy, 44, from trendy Condesa district that was among the worst hit.

“Some neighbors and friends got together (Sunday). We went to eat to cheer ourselves up, looking for a little normality.”

Some of the most affected neighborhoods, those built on top of a soft ancient lake bed, still had entire blocks cordoned off.

More than 44,000 schools in six states were due to reopen on Monday, but only 103 of them in Mexico City, which suffered most of the fatalities.

Officials said they did not want to impede relief efforts, so more than 4,000 public schools and nearly as many private

schools in the capital will remain closed for now.

The National Autonomous University of Mexico, with 350,000 students at campuses in and around Mexico City, will resume classes on Monday.

Of 6,000 damaged buildings, some 1,500 have yet to be inspected, said Horacio Urbano, president of Centro Urbano, a think tank specializing in urban issues and real estate.

Ten percent of the damaged buildings were constructed after 1990, by which time strict building codes had been enacted in the wake of the 1985 earthquake that killed some 10,000 people.

Search operations, using advanced audio equipment to detect signs of life beneath tonnes of rubble, continued at a few buildings with help from teams from as far afield as Israel and Japan.

At a school in southern Mexico City where 19 children and six adults had been reported killed, officials recovered the body an adult woman on Sunday.

The search for survivors continued in a ruined office building in the Roma neighborhood and in a five-story apartment building in historic Tlalpan.

Authorities called off efforts in the upper-middle class Lindavista zone after pulling 10 bodies from the rubble over several days, and work at the Tlalpan building was briefly halted on Saturday by a magnitude 6.2 aftershock.

Another 5.7 aftershock struck on Sunday off the west coast, jolting southwestern Mexico, and seismologists predicted more tremors to come.

While aid and volunteer workers have flooded into the accessible districts of Mexico City, people in more remote neighborhoods and surrounding states have received less attention.

Miguel Angel Luna, a 40-year old architect, joined a caravan of civilians that headed out late last week to help isolated communities scattered around the base of the Popocatepetl volcano in the state of Morelos.

Around 40 percent of the adobe homes he saw in poor villages had been completely destroyed and some 80 percent were heavily damaged, Luna said.

“We’re talking about very poor communities,” Luna said.

“They don’t have tools, they don’t have materials, they don’t have money to rebuild.” (rtr)

MEDAN - The construction of Trans Sumatra railway lines is scheduled to be completed at the end of 2019, Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said.

“The project has always been monitored to ensure that it will be completed on schedule. As President Joko Widodo expects, (the construction of) Trans Sumatra railway lines will be completed in 2019,” he said here on Sunday.

The construction of railway tracks linking Medan to Langkat and Aceh will receive priority in the construction of Trans Sumatra railway lines, he said.

He made it clear that the construction of Trans Sumatra railway lines is high on the list of the central governments priorities.

“As it is a national strategic project, it must be completed thoroughly. The realization of the project is just a matter of time,” he said.

Chief of the Traffic and Safety Section of the North Sumatra Train Technical Station Iskandar said the construction of Trans Sumatra lines is underway.

The construction of Binjai-Besitang,Langkat, Besitang-Sei Liput, and Rantau Prapat-Pinang City railways tracks is still underway, he said. The construction of the railway tracks will be completed in 2019 as scheduled, he said.(ant)

VIENTIANE - The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Vientiane organized a batik workshop for Laotians at the Vientiane Center Mall as part of a series of activities to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Indonesia-Laos relations.

“Batik making has been chosen, as it is rooted in Indonesian culture and technically easy to do.

We want to intensively promote Indonesian culture in Laos,” Wishnu Krisnamurthi, chairman of the committee in charge of holding the event to mark the 60th anniversary of Indonesia-Laos relations, stated here on Monday.

The Indonesian Embassy in Vientiane has roped in Indonesian batik designers to teach the participants at the workshop.

“They (Laotians) are very interested in Indonesian batik. Laos has a distinctive culture of beautiful woven fabric, but not everyone can weave, and weaving as an activity is not as easy as batik making,” he explained.

The batik workshop was attended by some 70 Laotian participants from the Laos art school, art galleries in Laos, Lao ethnic art organization, and local people visiting the Vientiane Center Mall.

“I think batik making is a very enjoyable activity.

I love to use canting (a spouted tool used to apply liquid wax) on a cloth to paint batik,” Khamheng Phommasy, one of the batik workshops participants from the Lao Art Institute, remarked. Phommasy claimed to be interested in Indonesian batik due to its unique and diverse hues.

“The most important aspect is that I love Indonesian batik since I like to design it on cotton fabric,” Phommasy said.(ant)

Jokowi calls for introduction of modern farming

SALATIGA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has indicated that it is time to introduce Indonesian farmers to modern system of farming to bring them into better life.

“Modernization is what we need. I have told the Agriculture Minister to move that way step by step,” Jokowi said when meeting a farmer association Qaryah Thayyibah (SPPQT) in Kalibening, Salatiga, Central Java on Monday.

He said building water reservoirs, dams and other irrigation systems is the governments duty, but if the farmers did not react positively to the government

initiative, they would never be better than they are now.

He said the farmers should not think only about planting and harvesting as the biggest part of the profit is in the process of agribusiness.

“The Qaryah Thayyibah has taken the right step by consolidating farmers in big group,” he said.

He said he hopes the group of farmers did not think only about the right time for

planting and seeking seeds, and fertilizing their crops.

“But they also should be in charge of post harvest activities as the biggest profit is there. Therefore, consolidation should lead to the forming of organization as a farm corporation,” he said.

They would then produce the fertilizer they need, building big fertilizer factory , and they should have their own rice mills and rice threshing machines.

The farmers should be able to handle their marketing that the entire profit of the farming industry would go to the farmers, he said.(ant)

LONDON - The single currency and European stocks slipped on Monday after the bloc’s most powerful leader German Chancellor Angela Merkel won a fourth term but faced a fractured parliament as support for the far-right surged. Investors were unnerved by the prospect of months of coalition talks which could distract from negotiations with Britain over its divorce from the European Union and efforts to integrate the bloc’s remaining members.

Political uncertainty also weakened the New Zealand dollar as the ruling National Party won the largest number votes in a weekend election but failed to secure a ruling majority, with a protracted period of coalition building now a possibility. “Merkel’s most pressing task now is not to knit Europe closer together. It’s to form a coalition which will prove to be extremely difficult and time-consuming,” said Oliver Rakau, chief German economist at Oxford Economics.

The euro slid 0.3 percent to $1.1918, putting more distance between a 2-1/2-year high of $1.2092 reached on Sept. 8, when a European Central Bank policy meeting left currency bulls optimistic the ECB would begin tapering its big stimulus programme.

Euro zone stock markets were down 0.3 percent, although falls were more pronounced in Asia where equity markets were hit by concerns over the economic health of the world’s second biggest economy China. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was last down 0.8 percent.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was down 1.3 percent and Shanghai slipped 0.4 percent after a number of Chinese cities rolled out new measures to cool housing prices.

Investor sentiment was also undermined by concerns that China’s beefed-up environmental protection could reduce demand, and consequently economic growth.

FEW OPTIONS

In European debt markets, the focus was firmly on the German election where the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD) stunned the establishment by becoming the first far-right party to enter parliament in more than half a

century. All parties have ruled out a coalition with the AfD and Merkel’s only straightforward path to a majority in parliament is a three-way tie-up with the liberal Free Democrats (FDP) and the Greens - an arrangement untested at national level.

Investors bought German government bonds on the result - seen as one of the safest stores of cash in the euro zone - and sold lower-rated debt in the likes of Portugal, Spain and Italy.

Overall the market moves were fairly modest, however, and some analysts said investors may have used the result as an excuse to sell the euro which was moving lower before the vote.

“The euro...was already losing support from the European Central Bank’s monetary policy theme and appeared to be on its way lower,” said Daisuke Karakama, chief market economist at Mizuho Bank in Tokyo.

In New Zealand, the kiwi, the world 11th most-traded currency, was down 0.7 percent at $0.7288 and set for its biggest daily drop in around a month. It was at a 1-1/2-month high of $0.7435 as recently as Sept. 20, when speculation for a comfortable ruling party win had boosted the currency. “While there are a few different scenarios and some potentially testy issues to negotiate, ultimately the political landscape appears as though it will remain relatively centralist and we are reasonably agnostic on what it all means,” wrote economists at ANZ. The British pound edged up 0.3 percent to $1.3541, bouncing back from a slide on Friday when ratings agency Moody’s downgraded its credit rating. The dollar was up 0.2 percent against a basket of six major currencies at 92.397.

The greenback added 0.3 percent at 112.27 yen, reversing losses suffered on Friday when the exchange of insults between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korea heated up, sapping broader risk appetite.

Oil prices consolidated after surging on Friday, when OPEC and other oil producers said they were clearing a glut that has weighed on crude prices and may wait until January before deciding whether to extend their output curbs beyond the first quarter of 2018.

Brent crude futures was down 0.2 percent at $56.73 a barrel, not far from a 6-1/2-month high of $56.91 set on Friday.

EU seeks more protection for Uber-style jobs

BRUSSELS - The European Commission wants more social protection and rights for casual workers, such as those in the “gig economy”, and others with non-standard contracts to try to tackle growing social inequality.

The Commission’s consultation document on these plans, seen by Reuters, is part of a broader reworking of the EU’s economic priorities, after pressure from populist forces that accuse Brussels of having pursued ultra-liberal policies to the detriment of workers.

The document proposes a substantial review of EU’s social rights that could partly limit workers’ flexibility and reduce the growing insecurity caused by new types of jobs offered by firms like Uber and food-delivery service Deliveroo.

Brussels is proposing to extend full social protection and other forms of security to all workers, including those on very short-term, part-time and zero-hour contracts who in some EU member countries have lower safeguards.

Most EU workers have full-time, permanent contracts, but a growing number of people, especially the young, have jobs with ultra-flexible working hours, no regular pay and fewer employment protections.

They accounted for more than one third of the total workforce in the 28-country bloc in 2015 and that share is growing, the commission said in the consultation paper to be presented on Monday.

Most of these employees have to work under these conditions in absence of alternatives, the document said.

Non-standard workers tend to have lower levels of social and health security and some new contracts, such as casual or voucher-based work, are even more worrying, the commission’s document said.

The Commission’s proposals could raise costs for companies like Uber, which is already facing legal disputes in several EU countries and has not had its licence renewed in London. .

CASUAL?

The Commission is proposing that workers should be properly informed about the conditions of their employment and should be given explanations by their employers for not having a permanent contract after a few years in the same job.

Casual workers should also be entitled to a minimum number of guaranteed hours “after a predefined continuous period,” the Commission said.

But the enhanced protection would not be applicable to self-employed workers, which could provide a loophole for employers such as Uber and Deliveroo.

Uber says its drivers are self-employed, although in Britain this categorisation has recently been challenged by the government.

Other non-standard work contracts, such as paid traineeships and temporary agency work, are also under the Commission’s scrutiny as they “continue to present challenges from the point of view of job security and adequate working conditions,” the consultation document said.

To reduce abuses linked to these forms of contracts, Brussels wants to introduce a maximum duration of employee probation.

The Commission will initially discuss its plans with trade unions and employers, followed by legislative proposals. (rtr)

This handicraft art market is located in the west of Sukawati Art Market, about 12 km from Denpasar. This market opens from 06:30 to 11:30, so it is called morning market. The excellence is the knick-knacks or handicrafts and souvenirs made of wood that are not offered by other art markets.

Various kinds of handicrafts are sold here, such as the statue of Lord Ganesha, Lord Shiva, farmers, Balinese dancers, barong, mask, trees, birds and other animals. There are also statue of abstract style, paintings and knick-knacks for women such as bracelets, necklaces and rings. In addition, visitors can also find musical instruments of bronze, bamboo, coconut shell, cow leather and wooden fruits.

Chief of Gelulung customary village, Wayan Parwata, said the Gelulung Morning Market has about 600 kiosks, but not all of them are sold. This market has existed long time ago, not a part of the Sukawati art market. Originally, this market was pioneered by many handicraft merchants from various regions in Gianyar that wanted to sell their products at Sukawati art market. They came early in the morning before the art market was opened. They sold haphazardly, so it looked chaotic and dirty.

Seeing such conditions, the merchants in the art market complained and drove them away. The handicraft merchants were then moved to the west of the art market, precisely at the vacant land of Gelulung field around 1988. The handicraft merchants were then allowed to sell in the morning or before Sukawati art market opened. “The merchants at this art market buy handicraft to be resold in Sukawati Market, so they can not open until noon or may only sell if the art market is closed,” said Parwata.

After experiencing the development, it made cooperation with the government of Gianyar district in 1991, so there is a levy of 20 percent to the district government and 80 percent to Gelulung customary village. It is for market operating costs such as the development and improvement of the market.

BANGLI - The children of Karangasem origin who became refugees of Gunung Agung disaster, began to follow the learning process at the nearest school on Monday (Sep. 25). Due to emergency conditions and situations, most of them went to school without uniforms and stationery.

Based on data collected from Disdikpora Bangli District, refugee children attend school at elementary and junior high school level. In Bangli districts, there are 179 refugees who study in dozens of primary schools. While in Kecamatan Tembuku, there are 213 primary school refugee children. In Kecamatan Susut, 41 children are enrolled in nine elementary schools.

As for junior high school level, the number of refugee children who recorded the learning process yesterday as many as 172 people.

Secretary Disdikpora Bangli Nyoman Sedana said children who become refugees to learn without using school uniforms due to the limited conditions, most of them choose to go to school using clean clothes.

For the needs of stationery, they are assisted by their respective schools. ‘’ From the results of our monitoring in some schools, they can still follow the learning process as usual, ‘’ he said.

Japan’s Abe announces snap election amid worries over North Korea

TOKYO - Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said he would dissolve parliament’s lower house on Thursday for a snap election, seeking a mandate to stick to his tough stance towards a volatile North Korea and rebalance the social security system.

Abe, in power for five years, had been expected to call the election for next month to take advantage of improved support and disarray in the opposition camp.

“I’ll demonstrate strong leadership and stand at the forefront to face a national crisis,” Abe told reporters, mentioning Japan’s fast-ageing population and North Korea.

“This is my responsibility as leader and my mission as prime minister.”

Natsuo Yamaguchi, the head of Abe’s junior coalition partner the Komeito party, said he understood the election would be on Oct. 22.

Abe said he would redirect some revenue from a planned sales tax hike in 2019 to child care and education rather than paying back public debt, although he added he would not abandon fiscal reform.

Rebalancing the spending would offset the potential negative effect on consumption from the tax rise, he said.

“We will turn Japan’s social se-

curity system into one that responds to all generations by boldly diverting policy resources to resolve the two major concerns -- child rearing and (elderly) nursing care – that working generations confront,” he said.

Abe rejected criticism that holding an election now would create a political vacuum at a time of rising tension over North Korea’s missile and nuclear arms programme. Pyongyang has fired ballistic missiles over Japan twice in the last month and conducted its sixth and biggest nuclear test on Sept. 3 “We must not give in to North Korea’s threats. By gaining a mandate from the people with this election, I will forge ahead with strong diplomacy,” Abe said, adding that now was the time to put more pressure on Pyongyang, not open dialogue.

Abe, whose ratings have risen to around 50 percent from around 30 percent in July, is gambling his ruling bloc can keep its lower house majority even if it loses the twothirds “super majority” needed to achieve his long-held goal of revising the post-war pacifist constitution to clarify the military’s role.

The Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) insurgent group denied killing the Hindus saying it did not attack civilians.

The latest violence in western Myanmar’s Rakhine State began on Aug. 25 when ARSA militants attacked about 30 police posts and an army camp, killing about 12 people.

The United Nations has described as ethnic cleansing a sweeping government offensive in the north of Rakhine State in response to those attacks.

The government of Buddhist-majority Myanmar has said more than 400 people have been killed, most of them insurgents. It rejects accusations of ethnic cleansing, saying it is fighting terrorists.

Members of the small Hindu minority appear to have been caught in the middle. Some have fled to Bangladesh, complaining of violence against them by soldiers or Buddhist vigilantes. Others have complained of being attacked by the insurgents on suspi-

cion of being government spies.

The government said a search was mounted near Ye Baw Kya village in the north of Rakhine State after a refugee in Bangladesh contacted a Hindu community leader in Myanmar. The refugee said about 300 ARSA militants had marched about 100 people out of the village on Aug. 25 and killed them.

Twenty of the dead were female and eight were male children, the government said.

“They forced eight female villagers to convert to the Islamic religion and took them to Bangladesh,” the government said.

A government spokesman, Zaw Htay, said the security forces were investigating.

Access to the area by journalists as well as human rights workers and aid workers is largely restricted and Reuters could not independently verify the report.

An ARSA spokesman said he believed Buddhist nationalists trying to divide Hindus and Muslims were behind the “lies” that ARSA militants had killed the villagers.

“ARSA has internationally pledged not to target civilians and that remains unchanged no matter what,” the spokesman, who is based in a neighbouring country and identified himself only as Abdullah, told Reuters through a messaging service. (rtr)

Deep sleep: Even jellyfish need their slumber WASHINGTON - Even a jellyfish -- one of Earth’s first and most ancient animals -- needs its sleep.

Scientists said on Thursday they have demonstrated that a primitive type of jellyfish called Cassiopea goes to sleep nightly.

While sleep has been confirmed in other invertebrates such as worms and fruit flies, the jellyfish is the most evolutionarily ancient animal that has been shown to slumber.

“These results suggest that even those animals that lack a centralized nervous system require sleep, which means that sleep is one of the most ancient behavioral states, deeply rooted within the animal lineage,” California Institute of Technology biologist Ravi Nath said.

Jellyfish have thrived in the seas for at least 600 million years, longer than nearly any other animal. By comparison, dinosaurs appeared roughly 230 million years ago and humans appeared roughly 300,000 years ago. The findings involving such a primordial creature raise fresh questions about sleep’s origin and purpose.

“We do not know if sleep is limited to just animals,” said Nath, who helped lead the study published in the journal Current Biology.

“Sleep is a genetically encoded behavioral state. Genes and neural circuits interact to generate the sleep state,” Nath added.

“I think it would be hard to demonstrate a sleep state in an organism that is not an animal, but I think the sleep state that we know may have been co-opted from periods of quiescence in organisms as diverse as plants, bacteria and fungi.”

Jellyfish are among the first animals to have developed neurons -- nerve cells -- though they lack a brain, spine or central nervous system.

Cassiopea jellyfish live in clear, shallow, tropical waters of the Pacific and western Atlantic oceans, eating plankton. Measuring about 1-2 inches (2.5-5 cm) in diameter, they are dubbed the “upside-down jellyfish” because they lie on the seafloor inverted in the water with their tentacles upward.

Through lab experiments, the researchers determined Cassiopea met three important sleep criteria: periods of decreased activity known as behavioral quiescence; a decreased response to stimuli; and an increased sleep drive after being sleep deprived. (rtr)

WASHINGTON - Some plant-eating dinosaurs apparently liked a side order of crabs to go with their usual salad. Scientists said on Thursday fossilized dung thought to have come from herbivorous duck-billed dinosaurs that inhabited southern Utah 75 million years ago contained pieces of crustacean shells along with vestiges of vegetation.

The discovery provides the strongest evidence to date that some large herbivorous dinosaurs sometimes strayed from a purely vegetarian diet, said University of Colorado paleontologist Karen Chin, who led the research published in the journal Scientific Reports.

“This was a very exciting discovery, precisely because it was so unexpected,” Chin said.

Fossilized dung, called coprolites, offers insight into the diet of extinct creatures that cannot be gleaned by merely studying teeth, jaws and skeletons.

Ten coprolites from Utah’s Grand Staircase-Escalante National M o nument contained crustacean shells mixed with rotted coniferous wood. For at least part of the year these duck-billed dinosaurs may have munched on rotting logs because they contained stores of crusta-

ceans and other invertebrates, Chin said.

Chin said the researchers do not know precisely what types of crustaceans were eaten by the dinosaurs, but it was possible they were crabs. A variety of crustaceans also including crayfish and pillbugs are known to shelter in the moist environments of rotting logs. The crustaceans were at least two inches (5 cm) long.

“Rotting wood and fungal tissues would have offered useful nutritional compounds such as cellulose and fiber, and the crustaceans would have provided good sources of protein and calcium. Protein is an important component of animal diets, and is particularly important when animals are breeding,” Chin said.

The researchers think eating crustaceans may have been a seasonal dietary change linked to breeding and egg-laying. Some

birds, the evolutionary descendants of dinosaurs, consume more protein and calcium during breeding season.

Duck-billed dinosaurs, also called hadrosaurs, earned their name because the front of their skull resembles a duck’s bill.

They also possessed beaks and specialized teeth for grinding plant material, and are believed to have roamed the landscape in herds.

Two hadrosaurs that lived in the area at the time were: Parasaurolophus, roughly 33 feet (10 meters) long with a long tubular head crest; and Gryposaurus, about 39 feet (12 meters) long with an arched nasal crest.

Hadrosaurs were common in western North America and other parts of the world during the Cretaceous Period, representing an important plant-eating group alongside armored dinosaurs and horned dinosaurs. (rtr)

GIANYAR — To muffle anxiety from disaster shadows of Mount Agung, most of the women at refugee camp of Sutasoma Square, Sukawati, chose to spend time with mejejahitan (making offerings) on Sunday (Sep. 24).

Ni Wayan Temi, a refugee from Karangasem town, admitted to be happy to do such activity with other refugees. Especially since a few days ago, she is just pensive to think about the impact of Mount Agung disaster. “Since four days ago, I have stunned as having no activity. I am grateful because at the location have been provided with slepan (green

coconut leaf). Indeed, here is the work of women. We can use this to say prayer from here,” he explained.

think with this mejejahitan activity will encourage them. They can mutually share stories with other relatives. Thus, they can kill time in refugee camps,” he explained.

In the meantime, at the health post of Sutasoma Square, Sukawati, there are 58 refugees having checked up their health. Volunteer doctor, I Made Suwita, who is the Legal and Credential Division Head of the Indonesian Medical Association (IDI) of Gianyar district, said that most refugees

are contracted by acute respiratory infections (ISPA). “I have not recapitulated yet their medical record but in general some have complained about dizziness, cough and cold,” he explained.

He also ensured that drug availability is also complete at the health post. “All drugs have been covered by health agency. We are also on guard for 24 hours in turn. There are about 5 medical personnel from health centers in Gianyar in charge for each shift,” he said. (kmb35)

Indonesia, largest digital economic market in ASEAN JAKARTA — The development of creative industry potential including digital economy in Indonesia is very large. The government predicts in the next three years, the digital economy in the country can grow significantly. Based on calculation of the ministry of communications and informatics, the digital economy of Indonesia in 2020 can penetrate USD 130 billion or IDR 1,700 trillion.

This was expressed by President Joko Widodo at the opening of the Indonesia Business & Development Expo in Jakarta on Wednesday (Sep. 20).

According to president, that amount is equivalent to 20 percent of total Gross Domestic Product (GDP)

of Indonesia. Such amount makes Indonesia the largest digital economic market in the ASEAN region. “Of course, the changes and potential of the digital economy in Indonesia inevitably brings in behavioral changes to consumer society of Indonesia,” said Jokowi.

He said currently there is a shift in lifestyle, consumption patterns and production in most Indonesian communities. In the past, Indonesian people only did business offline, but now they have switched to using online (internet) facilities.

“Currently, we have faced the problem of changing pattern. Rather than going far away to store or shop-

ping mall faced with traffic congestion in the street or long queue at the checkout, now just by opening a smartphone application and few taps, the goods are delivered to home after waiting for a few moment,” explained Jokowi.

However, explained Jokowi, digital economic potential owned by Indonesia is like a double-edged knife.

Jokowi reminded that in the era of digital economy, everyone can later become entrepreneurs. This is evident from businesses such as the online application-based transportation and accommodation services that often become a side business.

“Remember that being entrepre-

neurs should be cautious and those wishing to start a business must be careful as well. This is an opportunity and a threat at once. Many people work in the digital economy, where they work flexibly and very dynamically.

Without being accurate and careful, we can be made surprised,” he said.

In the meantime, Minister of Communications and Informatics, Rudiantara, said that without adequate infrastructure of information and communication technology (ICT), it is impossible to achieve the digital economy in Indonesia. “Without infrastructure, it is impossible for the digital economy to grow,” explained Rudiantara.

Data at the ministry of communication and informatics indicate that currently the ICT infrastructure in Indonesia is ranked fourth in ASEAN. Rudiantara hoped that by 2019 all subdistrict capitals across Indonesia will be connected with broadband services.

Some refugees in Klungkung undergo inpatient treatment, one dies

SEMARAPURA —After running for four days, refugees in Klungkung district that must receive medical treatment continue to increase. They are not only handled at the health post, but dozens of people must be rushed to Klungkung Hospital. Some of them have to undergo hospitalization. Moreover, one patient has been declared dead on Sunday afternoon (Sep. 24).

Head of Klungkung Health Agency, Ni Made Adi Swapatni, explained that according to data from September 21 until 13:00, the refugees receiving basic treatment reached 3,168 people. Of those patients, 92 people were referred to hospital for further treatment. Five people got outpatient treatment and 39 others were hospitalized. “If seen, the sick refugees continue to grow every day,” he said.

Refugees suffer from respiratory infections, peptic ulcer and hypertension. Environmental change is the trigger. Nevertheless, the efforts to minimize continue to be done by maximizing existing officers. “Monitoring remains to go on,” he said.

Director of Klungkung Hospital, I Nyoman Kesuma, explained that patients undergoing inpatient treatment mostly consist of the elderly due to shortness of breath. Unfortunately, one refugee, Nengah Rianta, 90, from Perangsari Tengah, Selat Duda, checking in on Saturday afternoon (Sep. 23) was dead last Sunday. “Patient in shocked condition already got intensive care,” he explained. His body, he continued, is still entrusted at hospital.

On Monday afternoon will be brought back to his hometown to be buried.

“Tomorrow, it will be brought home by his family,” he said.

The hospital located on Jalan Flamboyan Semarapura is also still treating a critical refugee. In the meantime, to overcome the presence of subsequent patients, the hospital will provide additional beds temporarily placed in the training and meeting room. “We are going to provide 50 additional beds, while additional paramedics have been coordinated with the provincial government to be assisted,” he said. BANGLI - After the increasing activity of Mount Agung, dozens of Karangasem residents who suffer from mental disorders are now entrusted to be treated in the Bali Mental Hospital (RSJP) in Bangli. Some of them were picked up directly by RSJP hospital officer, while some others were escorted by health officers of Karangasem. Based on the data collected at RSJP Bali in Bangli on Sunday (Sep. 24), the residents of Karangasem with the refugee status being treated in RSJ Bali totally amount to 17 people. They come from a number of villages such as Bebandem, Abang, Selat, Rendang, Subagan, Besakih and Tenganan and have been hospitalized since September 19.

Nurse Supervisor in charge in the morning, Wayan Suarjaya, accompanied by doctor on duty Eka Yadnya when met last Sunday said that three of the 17 patients currently treated at the RSJP belong to one family. The three were picked up by the RSJ officers to their home at Bebandem village. “We pick them up because one family is mentally disrupted. One of them is the patient in stocks,” he explained.

In the meantime, the other 14 patients were taken to the RSJP by health workers of Karangasem carried out gradually since September 20. They are entrusted to be treated in the RSJP because it is feared to interfere with the activities of other residents if taken to evacuate to refugee camps. Suarjaya stated that among the refugee patients from Karangasem, only seven people belong to new patients. The remaining are old patients that have frequently undergone outpatient treatment.

He also disclosed that when taken to RSJP, only a few of them have owned KIS health insurance card. Nevertheless, the management of RSJP still provides health services according to applicable standards. “So, even though they do not have health insurance, we still give services. EVACUATION of the cattle belonging to residents on the slopes of Mount Agung remains to leave a problem. The Head of the Bali Livestock Agency, Putu Sumantra, said on Saturday (Sep. 23) that he is still waiting for guidance from central government to coordinate with local government. Totally, the cattle reach about 20,000 heads.

He said the total population of cattle around the slopes of Mount Agung actually reaches 30,000 heads. About 10,000 heads are said to have been evacuated by residents and sold cheaply.

Now, he is confused to evacuate such amount of remaining cattle how to evacuate, what to use to evacuate and who to involve. In the meantime, the areas where the cattle are located are not allowed to be entered.

He admitted that cattle become the life support for people on the slopes of Mount Agung, such as Jungutan, Besakih, Ban and Sebudi village. The majority of locals survive from raising cattle.

Thus, when the price of livestock drops in this situation, local people are very upset. However, he himself claimed to have no option to evacuate. “As planned, one of the director generals of central government will meet the regent

of Karangasem,” said Sumantra.

Head of the National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB), Willem Rampangilei, in the coordination meeting with a number of related agencies in Wantilan of Karangasem government on Saturday (Sep. 24) said that he will further discuss about cattle evacuation. Currently, the most urgent is certainly to evacuate all the residents living within dangerous radius from the peak of Mount Agung to the refugee camps. It also immediately persuades people that are not willing to evacuate so they can leave their home village immediately.

“We must be able to do our best to prevent the worst thing for residents,” he said.

Some refugees from Tanah Aron hamlet met at Tenganan Pegringsingan village admitted to be anxious with the fate of their cattle. Some residents are no lon-

ger allowed to enter Tanah Aron hamlet, Bhuana Giri, Bebandem, by the officers because the area is already prone to disaster. “I can hardly sleep due to thinking about my cattle at home, let alone I have not fed them for two days,” said a resident named Ketut Saputra.

They hoped there are private parties or volunteers that can facilitate to evacuate their cattle.

In total, there are about 50 heads remaining to be left at Tanah Aron. Actually, if anyone wants to evacuate, the Tenganan Pegringsingan customary village has prepared enough land to accommodate temporarily people’s cattle. “Here, there is a large enough land if anyone is willing to evacuate, we are ready to accommodate temporarily here,” said Wayan Arsana, a village apparatus of Tenganan Pegringsingan customary village. Social media star Kylie Jenner reported pregnant

LOS ANGELES - Kylie Jenner, the youngest member of the celebrity Kardashian family, was reported on Friday to be pregnant.

Celebrity news website TMZ, People magazine and Buzzfeed all quoted sources as saying that Jenner, 20, the half-sister of Kim Kardashian, is expecting a baby with her boyfriend, the rapper Travis Scott.

Jenner’s representatives could not be reached for comment.

Jenner, who has parlayed her family’s reality TV show and a 97 million Instagram following into a lucrative cosmetics line, later posted a Snapchat photo

in which she appeared to have a baby bump under an oversized black T-shirt.

People magazine, quoting unidentified sources, said the baby was due in February.

“The family has known for quite some time. She is really excited and so is Travis!” the magazine quoted one source as saying.

Another source said to be close to the family told People: “It is an unexpected, but completely amazing turn of events that she could not be more excited or thrilled about.”

Missoni’s party collection celebrates designer’s 20th anniversary

MILAN - Italian designer Angela Missoni celebrated 20 years at the creative helm of the familyowned knitwear brand with a party-inspired collection, declaring herself proud of having kept the brand relevant over the years.

“I wanted to celebrate my twentieth anniversary given it’s a relevant moment for any designer,” Missoni told reporters at the end of the show.

“So I organised a party and dressed these young boys and girls as though they were going to one,” she added.

Angela Missoni took over from her mother Rosita as creative director of the brand, known for its colourful geometric knit patterns, in 1997. The group was founded by Angela’s parents in 1953.

Missoni said she was very proud of having kept the brand relevant in the fashion industry “despite all the changes and difficulties of the sector”.

“There has certainly been a lot of work... you are never done and changes occur so fast that you are always moving and organising (the

company),” Missoni said.

Colourful as usual, the designs of the collection included seethrough dresses and skirts with matching bra tops, revealing bathing suits worn with short jackets and cardigans, pant suits and bright leggings with iridescent jumpers.

Missoni said that the focus was on lightweight knitwear which resembled chiffon and that many of the designs “had light... so to shine at my party”.

Models wore resin bracelets that recalled the fabrics’ patterns, big dangly geometric earrings and flowers made of fabric as decorations. Many wore wide-brim sun hats.

Men wore colourful shorts or tapered trousers with tops that had motifs that recalled tie-dye t-shirts, with leather slip-ons on their feet.

Milan fashion week runs until Sept. 25, with collections by luxury group Salvatore Ferragamo, Italy’s Trussardi, young designer Stella Jean and world-famous fashion brand Dolce & Gabbana to be showcased in coming days. (rtr)

Thousands evacuated as volcano on holiday island Bali grows more active

KLUNGKUNG - Nearly 35,000 people have been evacuated from near a volcano on the Indonesian holiday island of Bali that officials say is becoming more active and could erupt soon.

Authorities imposed a 12-km exclusion zone around the crater of Mount Agung, as increasing volcanic activity on Sunday sent strong tremors through areas in the eastern part of the one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations.

Officials urged the public to remain calm amid false reports and videos circulating online of an eruption.

“The latest analysis indicates that Mount Agung’s seismic energy is increasing and has the potential to erupt,” the National Vulcanology Center said in a statement. “However, no one can predict exactly when there will be an eruption,” it added.

Flights at Bali’s international airport were operating normally on Sunday as were tourist spots across the rest of the island.

Thousands of evacuees were being housed in makeshift shelters including town halls and school gyms and tents in villages around the volcano, and authorities expect the numbers to climb.

“The biggest challenge is we can’t predict the number of evacuees,” said Putu Widiada, head of the local disaster management agency in Klungkung district.

“If the number of evacuees exceeds our maximum capacity, we have asked that every public hall in the district be prepared to become

evacuation camps.” The shelters were well stocked with food, water, blankets and tents.

The National Disaster Management Agency has sent food and logistical supplies to the area, while also calling for public donations.

Many residents are still making daytime trips to their homes and life is largely continuing as normal in the area.
