‘Logan Lucky’ writer mystery: Is she real? Yes, says Adam Driver LONDON - The mystery over the identity of the screenwriter of “Logan Lucky” deepened on Monday when actor Adam Driver said the woman had been on the set of the heist caper movie. “Logan Lucky,” directed by Steven Soderbergh and set in the world of NASCAR racing, has made headlines because of speculation over whether its first-time screenwriter, Rebecca Blunt, really exists or is a pseudonym. Driver’s remarks appear to be the first reported sighting of Blunt. Asked at the film’s London premiere on Monday whether he had met Rebecca Blunt, Driver told Reuters Television: “Yeah.” “So she is real?,” Driver was asked. “Yes, she’s been on set,” Driver added. The Hollywood Reporter, citing multiple unnamed sources, said in July that no writer named Rebecca Blunt existed and that the name was a ruse that deceived Driver and his co-stars Daniel Craig and Channing Tatum while the film was being shot. The Hollywood Reporter in July noted that Blunt has no other mentions in movie and film union databases and has never been interviewed or photographed during promotions for the film. The trade publication also recalled that Soderbergh invented names for what was in fact his work as a film editor and cinematographer on his 2015 film “Magic Mike XXL.” Soderbergh responded in July to the speculation about Blunt’s existence by telling Entertainment Weekly, “When people make a statement like that, they should be very careful, especially when it’s a woman screenwriter who is having her first screenplay produced.” “Logan Lucky” opened in U.S. movie theaters last week and starts its European rollout this week. The 30-year-old singer sold some 116,000 units of “Rainbow,” according to data on Monday from Nielsen SoundScan, to give her the second-largest U.S. sales week of 2017 by a female singer after Katy Perry’s “Witness.” The Billboard 200 chart tallies units from album sales, song sales (10 songs equal one album) and streaming activity (1,500 streams equal one album).

SINGAPORE - U.S. Navy and Marine Corps divers on Tuesday found some remains of missing sailors inside sections of a U.S. guided-missile destroyer that collided with a merchant vessel near Singapore, the commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet said. The USS John S. McCain and the tanker Alnic MC collided on Monday while the U.S. ship was approaching Singapore on a routine port call. The impact tore a hole in the warship’s port side at the waterline, flooding compartments that included a crew sleeping area. U.S. Pacific Fleet Commander Admiral Scott Swift said an international search-and-rescue operation had found some remains and that the wider search for 10 sailors missing from the accident would continue until all hope was exhausted. “The divers were able to locate some remains in those sealed compartments during their search,” Swift told reporters at Singapore’s Changi Naval Base where the USS John S McCain is docked for damage assessment. “Additionally, the Malaysian authorities have reported that they have located potential remains. They are working to confirm and identify those remains.” He did

not specify how many remains had been found. The Malaysian navy said in a statement it had found a body eight nautical miles northwest of the collision site and it would transfer it to the U.S. Navy on Wednesday. Swift also said Monday’s collision - the fourth major accident in the U.S. Pacific fleet this year - could not be viewed in isolation from other incidents and that investigations were seeking to find a “common cause at the root of these events”. The John S. McCain’s sister ship, the Fitzgerald, almost sank off the coast of Japan after colliding with a Philippine container ship on June 17. The bodies of seven U.S. sailors

were found in a flooded berthing area after that collision. The latest accident has already prompted a fleet-wide investigation and plans for temporary halts in operations. Mental revolution through national reading habit movement

AMLAPURA - Various ways are carried out by central government to realize the ideals of the mental revolution. One of them is by re-growing the reading habit in the middle of younger generations. Results of the survey by Central Statistics Agency (BPS) indicate that 90.27 percent of Indonesians prefer watching TV rather than reading. This was also highlighted by a member of Commission X of the House of Representatives of the RI, Ida Bagus Putu Sukarta, in his presentation as a speaker in the National Reading Habit Movement on Monday (Aug. 21) at UKM Center Building, Amlapura.

The dissemination was packed in a talk show featuring four speakers from professional and bureaucratic background. The movement was greeted enthusiastically as seen from the audience reaching 200 people from school library management, students, reading habit activists, librarian as well as youth, religious and cultural figures. He hoped that to make people live a smarter life, the library should be tailored to the culture of the user community so as to provide added value for community. Regent of Karangasem, I Gusti Ayu Mas Sumatri, after opening the activity asked schools to look at the law about the library. Referring to the Law No. 43/2007 on library, schools / Islamic-based schools are required to allocate at least five percent of the operating budget of school or expenditure of goods outside of personnel expenditure and capital expenditures for the library development. “The reading movement should continue to grow, especially from schools preceded with resolving the problem of library,” he affirmed. In the meantime, the Main Secretary of the National Library of Indonesia who attended the dissemination, Dedi Djunaedi, said that in the mental revolution proclaimed by the government, the library occupies a stra-

tegic position to contribute in strengthening mentality of cultural independence, mentality of mutual assistance and mentality of service culture. Libraries provide various programs such as services and reading habit that are closely related to mental revolution. Therefore, the presence of library institution with the support of competent librarians should be able to provide and serve quality reading materials, in accordance with local culture, posing typicality of Indonesia. I Nyoman Tusthi Eddy, one of the prolific literati of Karangasem-born also asked the schools to make library interesting. By that way, it encourages the interest of students to make a visit and read their favorite books. Nowadays, many

young literati have been born from such process. However, they get minimal space and support to express their creativity. In the meantime, Regent of Bangli, I Made Gianyar, recently stated that the water of Lake Batur does suffer from severe pollution. Other than pollution, the lake also experiences siltation. According to him, to prevent the pollution of the lake water from getting worse, the government will make a kind of dam at the village boundary to filter water from the river into the lake so that it will not be getting dirty.

In addition, he also invited all farmers around Lake Batur to change their pattern of agriculture to return to use organic farming system. If currently still using chemical fertilizer, they are expected to shift to the use of organic fertilizer. “We will involve headman to make activities that invite people having not implemented organic farming system to apply this new farming system. The measure is done to prevent water pollution at the lake from getting worse in the future. Orangutans and elephants are legally protected animals. But in reality, many people are still hunting them for personal interests. Therefore, it is also humans that can also help save the animals from extinction. World Elephant and World Orangutan Day are set to remind the world for a moment to care about the existence of these amazing animals. Conservation of the elephants and orangutans requires a comprehensive and integrated effort of all parties, both in the field and in the political arena to ensure its success.

New Nokia 8 phone targets surging demand for video-streaming

HELSINKI - HMD Global, the Finnish start-up looking to reinvigorate the Nokia phone brand, unveiled the Nokia 8 on Wednesday, hoping to cash in on rising consumer demand for high-quality audio and video features. The Android device, due out in September, will potentially beat rivals on price but will still face fierce competition, with Apple’s highly anticipated 10th anniversary iPhone also expected next month and Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8 set to hit the market next week. With a suggested price tag of around 599 euros ($703), the Nokia 8 undercuts Apple, which typically offers a stripped down version of its latest phones for a similar price but charges hundreds of euros more for memory and key features. The new top-of-the-line Nokia sports a dual-sight video feature which enables simultaneous livestreaming on social media networks from both front and rear cameras on a split screen. It has licensed lens technology from camera maker Zeiss. It is the most high-end phone so far from HMD, which was set up late last year and made a splash in May when it revived Nokia’s classic 3310 feature handset in new brightly coloured versions. Other features of the Nokia 8, which will also

compete with Huawei’s recently launched P10, include surround-sound audio technology made for Nokia’s own virtual reality camera OZO for Hollywood professionals. “This is especially meant for millennial creators, people who want to share what’s happening every day,” HMD’s chief marketing officer Pekka Rantala said. HMD products are built by a unit of Foxconn, which acquired the manufacturing and distribution assets of the former Nokia phone business from Microsoft last year. Once the world’s dominant phonemaker, Nokia Oyj sold its handset operations to Microsoft in 2014, leaving it to focus on telecoms network equipment. HMD is owned by Smart Connect LP, a private equity fund managed by Jean-Francois Baril, a longserving former senior vice president of Nokia. It took over the Nokia feature phones business in December and has a licensing deal giving it sole use of the Nokia brand on all phones and tablets. It has so far launched four smartphones and five feature phones, including the 3310. Fire of land still potentially happens in Nusa Penida SEMARAPURA — Fire of land in the Klungking hill ranges, Karang Dawa hamlet, Bunga Mekar, Nusa Penida, could be successfully extinguished. This causes the fire handling to be a bit slower. “We still lack of infrastructure and facilities. In yesterday’s fire handling, we were helped by the tank truck of PDAM. Procurement of special tank truck for fire department has been proposed in the budget amendment. It has also been conveyed to the regent,” said Suarta. Indonesia to buy $1.14 billion worth of Russian jets

JAKARTA - Indonesia will buy 11 Sukhoi fighter jets worth $1.14 billion from Russia in exchange for cash and Indonesian commodities, two cabinet ministers said on Tuesday. The Southeast Asian country has pledged to ship up to $570 million worth of commodities in addition to cash to pay for the Suhkoi SU-35 fighter jets, which are expected to be delivered in stages starting in two years. Indonesian Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita said in a joint statement with Defence Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu that details of the type and volume of commodities were “still being negotiated”. Previously he had said the exports could include palm oil, tea, and coffee. The deal is expected to be finalised soon between Indonesian state trading company PT Perusahaan Perdangangan Indonesia and Russian state conglomerate Rostec. Russia is currently facing a new round of U.S.-imposed trade sanctions. Meanwhile, Southeast Asia’s largest economy is trying to promote its palm oil products amid threats of a cut in consumption by European Union countries. Indonesia is also trying to modernise its ageing air force after a string of military aviation accidents. Indonesia, which had a $411 million trade surplus with Russia in 2016, wants to expand bilateral cooperation in tourism, education, energy, technology and aviation among others. (rtr)

North Korea has threatened what it calls “merciless retaliation and punishment” against the US for American involvement in military and security drills in South Korea. The first official response from the North to the annual exercises came in a military statement from Pyongyang. Cambridge University and Tim Pringle, the editor of the China Quarterly, confirmed the decision to repost the articles on Monday. “As editor, I would like to express my support for CUP’s decision,” Pringle said in a statement on Twitter. “Access to published materials of the highest quality is a core component of scholarly research. BUSINESS Getting to the core of global inflation LONDON- Stock markets have spent the year rising on bets of a resurgence in inflation, while central bankers trying to manage the global economy have spent the same time repeatedly reassuring everyone it’s just around the corner. Policymakers gathering at an annual monetary retreat in Jackson Hole, Wyoming in the coming week no doubt will be collectively pondering why the textbook rule that says low unemployment leads to labour shortages, then higher wages, and then in turn higher inflation, isn’t working. Yet the global economy is growing strongly. Apart from the risk of a stock market correction, there is no evidence of disinflationary threats like those that emanated from the financial crisis that started to smoulder a decade ago. The latest Reuters Polls of more than 500 economists covering more than 45 economies around the world showed almost no move in inflation expectations since the start of the year. In the United States, where the Federal Reserve is raising interest rates, inflation pressures are in an extended lull, which has led to contorted arguments trying to explain it away. Omair Sharif, senior U.S. economist at Societe Generale, in a recent note titled “All my exes”, criticises a recent tendency to search for suitably favourable core measures of inflation - stripped of, or “ex-”, whatever components are holding it down. “In short, while the core CPI undoubtedly looks better when you strip out sizable price declines, all these ‘ex’ measures still show a softening in the core rate that began in January,” he wrote. “Moreover, as we have noted before, the transitory excuse is long past its sell-by date.” Analysts who follow the European Central Bank have been equally disappointed that after spending 2 trillion or so euros buying mostly government bonds it’s

Uniqueness and advantages of this instrument, according to him, is rich in tone and having many patet (tonal hierarchical system) so that it can be used to accompany various types of gamelan music such as pegongan, angklungan, pejogedan, sadur and selonding. Otherwise, the tone will be mixed, like the dong sounds like deng.

Wayan Widana also said that the difficulty of playing this penting instrument is when looking for a tone by pressing the keys. This musical instrument should be placed sideways on the lap and simultaneously has to pluck the strings and move the fingers of the left hand like playing piano in order to get the desired tone. He added the performance of this musical instrument is not necessarily played alone but must be paired with other musical instruments such as petuk, 2 pieces of kendang (twosided drum), flute, lincik, gong tulu, kempur and so on. Of course, to adjust the tone of penting instrument to the other instruments in group needs to be trained continuously. This instrument belongs to traditional and modern one. It is said to be traditional because other than used to accompany gamelan composition, it is also included in the element of Panca Gita, while it is said to be modern because of being assisted with sound system so that it produces better and stronger sound and longer radius as well as uses 7-9 strings of guitar. “In the past, before using guitar strings, it used the Vespa clutch string. Spanish police track down, shoot dead Barcelona attacker SUBIRATS - Spanish police on Monday shot dead an Islamist militant who killed 13 people with a van in Barcelona last week, ending a five-day manhunt for the perpetrator of Spain’s deadliest attack in over a decade. Police said they tracked 22-yearold Younes Abouyaaqoub to a rural area near Barcelona and shot him after he held up what looked like an explosives belt and shouted “Allahu Akbar” (God is Greatest). The bomb squad used a robot to approach his body. Abouyaaqoub had been on the run since Thursday evening, after he drove at high speed into throngs of strollers along Barcelona’s most famous avenue, Las Ramblas. After fleeing the scene, he hijacked a car and fatally stabbed its driver. Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, which police believe was planned by a dozen accomplices, including a brother and two first cousins of the Moroccanborn Abouyaaqoub. Abouyaaqoub had been the only one of 12 accomplices still at large. His mother, Hannou Ghanimi, had appealed for him to surrender, saying she would rather see him in jail than dead. Of the other 11 in the militant cell, five were shot dead by police hours after the van attack, two were killed and one injured the day before in a blast in a house where they were apparently making explosives, and three were arrested elsewhere. “Shortly before 5 p.m., the police shot down Younes Abouyaaqoub, the driver of the van in the attack that killed 14 people in Barcelona,” Carles Puigdemont, head of the Catalonia regional government, told a news conference. He said the bomb belt turned out to be a fake one.

An employee at a petrol station, along an empty stretch of road between the towns of Subirats and Sant Sadurni d’Anoi, spotted a man resembling Abouyaaqoub and called the police. Sant Sadurni Mayor Maria Rosell said all police forces in Catalonia converged on the town. Police found Abouyaaqoub hiding in vineyards and shot him dead a kilometre down the road next to a sewage treatment plant. Cristiano Pecchi, an Italian tourist, first heard gunfire at around 4 p.m. (1400 GMT) Shortly afterwards, he said, up to 30 police cars arrived along with helicopters and ambulances. “I was just waiting for my car to be fixed and suddenly we heard gunfire and all hell was let loose,” he said. The scene unfolded 40 km (25 miles) from the spot, close to the FC Barcelona soccer stadium on the outskirts of the city, where police said Abouyaaqoub had seized the hijacked car. Police said Abouyaaqoub had first fled Las Ramblas on foot amid the chaos of the attack, then commandeered the car, stabbing the driver, 34-year-old Pau Perez, to death before smashing his way through a police checkpoint and ditching the car in the nearby town of Sant Just Desvern. The four people arrested so far in connection with the attacks are three Moroccans and a citizen of Spain’s North African enclave of Melilla. They were taken on Monday to the high court in Madrid, which has jurisdiction over terrorism matters. Indonesia court scraps new ride-hailing tariff rules

SINGAPORE/JAKARTA - Indonesia’s Supreme Court has ruled that tariff ranges imposed by the government last month on online ride-hailing services are illegal, saying they impede competition. The Southeast Asian nation’s transport ministry introduced minimum and maximum tariffs for ride-hailing firms such as Uber Technologies, Indonesia’s GO-JEK

and Southeast Asia’s Grab from July 1. It had cited a need to ensure comparable pricing with conventional transport providers and ad-

dress complaints of undercutting. Drivers of Indonesia’s PT Blue Bird Tbk and PT Express Transindo Utama Tbk taxis had called for a ban on ride-hailing services, claiming they were subject to less stringent requirements than conventional taxis. But the Supreme Court, responding to a petition filed by a group of individuals, ordered the scrapping of the tariff ranges in a ruling that was published on its website. “The upper and lower tariff limits do not provide healthy business competition,” the ruling stated, adding it hiked fares for consumers.

The ruling annuls more than a dozen clauses in the recently released public transportation ministry regulation, including regional quotas for ride-hailing vehicles, requirements for all vehicles to be registered to companies, and restrictions on where “special hire” vehicles can operate. Indonesia’s Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said his office was studying the ruling and would abide by the decisions and seek to avoid “unrest” in the sector. The managing director for Grab in Indonesia and a spokeswoman for Uber in Jakarta also said they were studying the ruling and de-

clined to comment further. Blue Bird Investor Relations head Michael Tene told Reuters the court ruling would not impact its operations because “the implementation of these regulations has been minimal and online taxis continued to operate outside the rules even before this Supreme Court ruling was issued.” Indonesia is a key battleground in the region for ride-hailing companies which have been driving rates lower to attract more customers in the country with the world’s fourth-largest population and a youthful, Internet-savvy demographic. JAKARTA - Indonesia needs to send strong protest to Malaysia against the incident in which Malaysia has printed the Indonesian national flag upside down in the SEA Games 2017 reference book, former constitutional chief justice Mahfud MD said here Monday. “As a citizen the case must be followed up with a diplomatic note containing strong protest as it was not a light matter.
