‘Logan Lucky’ writer mystery: Is she real?

Yes, says Adam Driver LONDON - The mystery over the identity of the screenwriter of “Logan Lucky” deepened on Monday when actor Adam Driver said the woman had been on the set of the heist caper movie.

“Logan Lucky,” directed by Steven Soderbergh and set in the world of NASCAR racing, has made headlines because of speculation over whether its first-time screenwriter, Rebecca Blunt, really exists or is a pseudonym.

Driver’s remarks appear to be the first reported sighting of Blunt.

Asked at the film’s London premiere on Monday whether he had met Rebecca Blunt, Driver told Reuters Television: “Yeah.”

“So she is real?,” Driver was asked.

“Yes, she’s been on set,” Driver added.

The Hollywood Reporter, citing multiple unnamed sources, said in July that no writer named Rebecca Blunt existed and that the name was a ruse that deceived Driver and his co-stars Daniel Craig and Channing Tatum while the film was being shot.

The Hollywood Reporter in July noted that Blunt has no other mentions in movie and film union databases and has never been interviewed or photographed during promotions for the film.

The trade publication also recalled that Soderbergh invented names for what was in fact his work as a film editor and cinematographer on his 2015 film “Magic Mike XXL.” Soderbergh responded in July to the speculation about Blunt’s existence by telling Entertainment Weekly, “When people make a statement like that, they should be very careful, especially when it’s a woman screenwriter who is having her first screenplay produced.”

LOS ANGELES - Kesha scored top billing on the Billboard 200 chart with her comeback album “Rainbow,” her first studio album in five years amid a bitter legal battle over her record contract.

The 30-year-old singer sold some 116,000 units of “Rainbow,” according to data on Monday from Nielsen SoundScan, to give her the second-largest U.S. sales week of 2017 by a female singer after Katy Perry’s “Witness.”

The Billboard 200 chart tallies units from album sales, song sales (10 songs equal one album) and streaming activity (1,500 streams equal one album).

“I am so grateful and so lucky and ... at a loss for words. thank you. thank you. thank you. there were many days that my music was simply a coping tool, for my emotions,” Kesha said in a message on her Facebook page on Monday.

“Rainbow” mixes Kesha’s signature pop sounds of seven years ago with raw, powerful songs in which she channels the frustration, hurt and anger she has felt during a lengthy

court battle with her former producer, Dr. Luke, whom she accused of emotional and sexual abuse.

Dr. Luke denied the allegations and counter-sued for defamation.

That case, and Kesha’s battle to be released from a multi-album contract with Sony Music, is still making its way through the U.S. legal system, even as Kesha decided to release “Rainbow” through the Sony Music group. (rtr)

SINGAPORE - U.S. Navy and Marine Corps divers on Tuesday found some remains of missing sailors inside sections of a U.S. guided-missile destroyer that collided with a merchant vessel near Singapore, the commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet said. The USS John S. McCain and the tanker Alnic MC collided on Monday while the U.S. ship was approaching Singapore on a routine port call. The impact tore a hole in the warship’s port side at the waterline, flooding compartments that included a crew sleeping area.

U.S. Pacific Fleet Commander Admiral Scott Swift said an international search-and-rescue operation had found some remains and that the wider search for 10 sailors missing from the accident would continue until all hope was exhausted.

“The divers were able to locate some remains in those sealed compartments during their search,” Swift told reporters at Singapore’s Changi Naval Base where the USS John S McCain is docked for damage assessment. “Additionally, the Malaysian authorities have reported that they have located potential remains. They are working to confirm and identify those remains.” He did

not specify how many remains had been found.

The Malaysian navy said in a statement it had found a body eight nautical miles northwest of the collision site and it would transfer it to the U.S. Navy on Wednesday. Swift also said Monday’s collision - the fourth major accident in the U.S. Pacific fleet this year - could not be viewed in isolation from other incidents and that investigations were seeking to find a “common cause at the root of these events”.

The John S. McCain’s sister ship, the Fitzgerald, almost sank off the coast of Japan after colliding with a Philippine container ship on June 17. The bodies of seven U.S. sailors

were found in a flooded berthing area after that collision. The latest accident has already prompted a fleet-wide investigation and plans for temporary halts in operations.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence said to have sailors killed in two collisions this year was disconcerting.

Mental revolution through national reading habit movement

AMLAPURA - Various ways are carried out by central government to realize the ideals of the mental revolution. One of them is by re-growing the reading habit in the middle of younger generations.

Results of the survey by Central Statistics Agency (BPS) indicate that 90.27 percent of Indonesians prefer watching TV rather than reading. This was also highlighted by a member of Commission X of the House of Representatives of the RI, Ida Bagus Putu Sukarta, in his presentation as a speaker in the National Reading Habit Movement on Monday (Aug. 21) at UKM Center Building, Amlapura.

The dissemination was packed in a talk show featuring four speakers from professional and bureaucratic background. The movement was greeted enthusiastically as seen from the audience reaching 200 people from school library management, students, reading habit activists, librarian as well as youth, religious and cultural figures. He hoped that to make people live a smarter life, the library should be tailored to the culture of the user community so as to provide added value for community.

Regent of Karangasem, I Gusti Ayu Mas Sumatri, after opening the activity asked schools to look at the law about the library. Referring to the Law No. 43/2007 on library, schools / Islamic-based schools are required to allocate at least five percent of the operating budget of school or expenditure of goods outside of personnel expenditure and capital expenditures for the library development. “The reading movement should continue to grow, especially from schools preceded with resolving the problem of library,” he affirmed. In the meantime, the Main Secretary of the National Library of Indonesia who attended the dissemination, Dedi Djunaedi, said that in the mental revolution proclaimed by the government, the library occupies a stra-

tegic position to contribute in strengthening mentality of cultural independence, mentality of mutual assistance and mentality of service culture.

Libraries provide various programs such as services and reading habit that are closely related to mental revolution.

Therefore, the presence of library institution with the support of competent librarians should be able to provide and serve quality reading materials, in accordance with local culture, posing typicality of Indonesia.

I Nyoman Tusthi Eddy, one of the prolific literati of Karangasem-born also asked the schools to make library interesting. By that way, it encourages the interest of students to make a visit and read their favorite books. Nowadays, many

young literati have been born from such process. However, they get minimal space and support to express their creativity. In accordance with the theme ‘Implementation of Mental Revolution through National Reading Habit Movement to Increase Reading Society Index’ he wanted the literati to be given the space to continuously work and foster their interest in reading.

The dissemination also featured keynote speakers such as the Head of Bali Archives and Library, Luh Putu Haryani, and the Head of Karangasem Library and Archives, I Komang Daging. So, chemicals are no longer used for agriculture. “If the usage of chemical pesticides can be suppressed, the lake water will not get polluted any longer considering the pollution of lake water is compounded by chemicals used in the agricultural activities,” he explained.

In the meantime, Regent of Bangli, I Made Gianyar, recently stated that the water of Lake Batur does suffer from severe pollution. Other than pollution, the lake also experiences siltation. According to him, to prevent the pollution of the lake water from getting worse, the government will make a kind of dam at the village boundary to filter water from the river into the lake so that it will not be getting dirty.

In addition, he also invited all farmers around Lake Batur to change their pattern of agriculture to return to use organic farming system. If currently still using chemical fertilizer, they are expected to shift to the use of organic fertilizer.

“We will involve headman to make activities that invite people having not implemented organic farming system to apply this new farming system. The measure is done to prevent water pollution at the lake from getting worse in the future. It also includes the use of machine to pump water, considering that its oil, gasoline and diesel fuel used can also pollute the lake water,” said Made Gianyar. (kmb41)

The number of elephant population in Sumatra has already reduced by half from 5,000 elephants in 1985 to the range of 2,400 and 2,800 elephants.

Orangutans and elephants are legally protected animals.

But in reality, many people are still hunting them for personal interests. Therefore, it is also humans that can also help save the animals from extinction. World Elephant and World Orangutan Day are set to remind the world for a moment to care about the existence of these amazing animals. Conservation of the elephants and orangutans requires a comprehensive and integrated effort of all parties, both in the field and in the political arena to ensure its success.

New Nokia 8 phone targets surging demand for video-streaming

HELSINKI - HMD Global, the Finnish start-up looking to reinvigorate the Nokia phone brand, unveiled the Nokia 8 on Wednesday, hoping to cash in on rising consumer demand for high-quality audio and video features.

The Android device, due out in September, will potentially beat rivals on price but will still face fierce competition, with Apple’s highly anticipated 10th anniversary iPhone also expected next month and Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8 set to hit the market next week.

With a suggested price tag of around 599 euros ($703), the Nokia 8 undercuts Apple, which typically offers a stripped down version of its latest phones for a similar price but charges hundreds of euros more for memory and key features.

The new top-of-the-line Nokia sports a dual-sight video feature which enables simultaneous livestreaming on social media networks from both front and rear cameras on a split screen. It has licensed lens technology from camera maker Zeiss.

It is the most high-end phone so far from HMD, which was set up late last year and made a splash in May when it revived Nokia’s classic 3310 feature handset in new brightly coloured versions.

Other features of the Nokia 8, which will also

compete with Huawei’s recently launched P10, include surround-sound audio technology made for Nokia’s own virtual reality camera OZO for Hollywood professionals.

“This is especially meant for millennial creators, people who want to share what’s happening every day,” HMD’s chief marketing officer Pekka Rantala said.

HMD products are built by a unit of Foxconn, which acquired the manufacturing and distribution assets of the former Nokia phone business from Microsoft last year.

Once the world’s dominant phonemaker, Nokia Oyj sold its handset operations to Microsoft in 2014, leaving it to focus on telecoms network equipment.

HMD is owned by Smart Connect LP, a private equity fund managed by Jean-Francois Baril, a longserving former senior vice president of Nokia. It took over the Nokia feature phones business in December and has a licensing deal giving it sole use of the Nokia brand on all phones and tablets.

It has so far launched four smartphones and five feature phones, including the 3310.

Rantala said he was happy with initial sales of the previous smartphones, but declined to disclose any sales figures yet.

Fire of land still potentially happens in Nusa Penida SEMARAPURA — Fire of land in the Klungking hill ranges, Karang Dawa hamlet, Bunga Mekar, Nusa Penida, could be successfully extinguished. Nevertheless, similar incidents are still potential to appear. It is inseparable from the condition of the area overgrown with grass plus the season leading to drought. Therefore, people must be vigilant. This was conveyed by Chief of Klungkung Municipal Police and Fire Department, I Putu Suarta, on Monday (Aug. 21).

He described that fire on some hectares of land taking place on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 20) could be extinguished by a joint officer consisting of the regional disaster mitigation agency (BPBD), police, military and fire brigade assisted by local residents at 24:00.

Although the situation is fairly safe, similar incidents still have the potential to happen.

“So far, we have not made fire-prone mapping. But seeing the condition of the area overgrown with grass plus approaching dry season, the fire is still potential to happen. This needs to be alerted by the community. Do not throw cigarettes indiscriminately and do not burning garbage. Please pay attention to security matter,” he said.

Amid such situation, the availability of fire extinguishers is not sufficient. In Nusa Penida, there is only a unit of fire truck without the support of water supply from tank truck. This causes the fire handling to be a bit slower. “We still lack of infrastructure and facilities. In yesterday’s fire handling, we were helped by the tank truck of PDAM. Procurement of special tank truck for fire department has been proposed in the budget amendment. It has also been conveyed to the regent,” said Suarta.

In the meantime, Deputy Regent of Klungkung, I Made Kasta, who monitored directly to the location of fire, stated that infrastructure of the fire department will get the attention from the district government. “Infrastructure and facilities can speed up the handling.

Indonesia to buy $1.14 billion worth of Russian jets

JAKARTA - Indonesia will buy 11 Sukhoi fighter jets worth $1.14 billion from Russia in exchange for cash and Indonesian commodities, two cabinet ministers said on Tuesday.

The Southeast Asian country has pledged to ship up to $570 million worth of commodities in addition to cash to pay for the Suhkoi SU-35 fighter jets, which are expected to be delivered in stages starting in two years.

Indonesian Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita said in a joint statement with Defence Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu that details of the type and volume of commodities were “still being negotiated”. Previously he had said the exports could include palm oil, tea, and coffee.

The deal is expected to be finalised soon between Indonesian state trading company PT Perusahaan Perdangangan Indonesia and Russian state conglomerate Rostec.

Russia is currently facing a new round of U.S.-imposed trade sanctions.

Meanwhile, Southeast Asia’s largest economy is trying to promote its palm oil products amid threats of a cut in consumption by European Union countries. Indonesia is also trying to modernise its ageing air force after a string of military aviation accidents.

Indonesia, which had a $411 million trade surplus with Russia in 2016, wants to expand bilateral cooperation in tourism, education, energy, technology and aviation among others. (rtr)

‘You never know’: South Korea rehearses for attack from the North

North Korea has threatened what it calls “merciless retaliation and punishment” against the US for American involvement in military and security drills in South Korea. The first official response from the North to the annual exercises came in a military statement from Pyongyang. North Korea has previously issued similar war-like rhetoric whenever US and South Korean troops conduct major joint exercises.

MANGUPURA — Drug issues cannot be resolved until now, and Bali is even ranked eleventh related to the level of drug abuse in Indonesia. Cambridge University Press had earlier blocked certain articles after a request from China’s government.

BEIJING - A leading British academic publisher that bowed to pressure from Beijing to block online access to hundreds of scholarly articles in China reversed its position and reposted the material on Monday, following an outcry over

academic freedom.

Cambridge University Press (CUP) said late last week it had removed some 300 papers and book reviews published in the China Quarterly journal from its website in China following a request from

the Chinese government.

It said it had blocked the articles, which covered topics including the 1989 Tiananmen Square democracy protests, the 1960s Cultural Revolution and Tibet, in order to keep its other academic and educational materials available in the country.

The move sparked an outcry on all sides, with academics attacking the decision as an affront to academic freedom, while the state-run Global Times tabloid said publishers could leave the country if they did not like the “Chinese way”.

Cambridge University and Tim Pringle, the editor of the China Quarterly, confirmed the decision to repost the articles on Monday.

“As editor, I would like to express my support for CUP’s decision,” Pringle said in a statement on Twitter.

“Access to published materials of the highest quality is a core component of scholarly research.

It is not the role of respected global publishing houses such as CUP to

hinder such access.”

Cambridge University said the move to block content had been a “temporary decision”.

“Academic freedom is the overriding principle on which the University of Cambridge is based,” it said in a statement.

Reuters journalists in China found a sampling of China Quarterly articles on the banned list were available on CUP’s website (www. cambridge.org) late on Monday and downloadable for free.

The articles were previously only available to subscribers or by buying individually, but Pringle said he had requested CUP make them freely available.

The decision to remove the articles had sent shockwaves through the academic community, with one China-based Western academic describing it as a “big wake-up call” amid two years in which the erosion of academic freedom in China had “escalated alarmingly”.

The academic declined to be

named for fear of reprisals from the government.

Separately on Monday, the Association for Asian Studies (AAS) said it had been told by CUP it had received a similar request to remove access in China to about 100 articles from the Journal of Asian Studies.

CUP publishes the Journal of Asian Studies for the U.S.-based AAS. No Journal of Asian Studies articles had been removed from CUP’s website search results in China, the AAS said.

“The officers of the association are extremely concerned about this violation of academic freedom, and the AAS is in ongoing discussions with CUP about how it will respond to the Chinese government,” it said in a statement.

“We oppose censorship in any form and continue to promote a free exchange of academic research among scholars around the world.

BUSINESS Getting to the core of global inflation LONDON- Stock markets have spent the year rising on bets of a resurgence in inflation, while central bankers trying to manage the global economy have spent the same time repeatedly reassuring everyone it’s just around the corner. Policymakers gathering at an annual monetary retreat in Jackson Hole, Wyoming in the coming week no doubt will be collectively pondering why the textbook rule that says low unemployment leads to labour shortages, then higher wages, and then in turn higher inflation, isn’t working.

Yet the global economy is growing strongly. Apart from the risk of a stock market correction, there is no evidence of disinflationary threats like those that emanated from the financial crisis that started to smoulder a decade ago. The latest Reuters Polls of more than 500 economists covering more than 45 economies around the world showed almost no move in inflation expectations since the start of the year.

In the United States, where the Federal Reserve is raising interest rates, inflation pressures are in an extended lull, which has led to contorted arguments trying to explain it away.

Omair Sharif, senior U.S. economist at Societe Generale, in a recent note titled “All my exes”, criticises a recent tendency to search for suitably favourable core measures of inflation - stripped of, or “ex-”, whatever components are holding it down.

“In short, while the core CPI undoubtedly looks better when you strip out sizable price declines, all these ‘ex’ measures still show a softening in the core rate that began in January,” he wrote. “Moreover, as we have noted before, the transitory excuse is long past its sell-by date.” Analysts who follow the European Central Bank have been equally disappointed that after spending 2 trillion or so euros buying mostly government bonds it’s

only running 1.3 percent euro zone inflation, still well below the 2.0 percent ceiling. Some measures of core inflation are even lower.

Frederik Ducrozet, economist at Pictet, has taken heart from a recent trend move higher in the “super core” euro zone inflation rate, which excludes the cost of package holidays.

The trouble is, the euro is on a tear higher. That is a reflection of vastly improved economic performance by many euro zone economies this year, but as the common currency climbs, it acts as a drag on exports and tamps down imported inflation.

Flash euro zone purchasing managers’ surveys in the coming week are likely to show continued strong business activity, but with tame price rises. ECB chief Mario Draghi, who famously sent shockwaves at a speech in London one month before the Jackson Hole summit five years ago proclaiming he would do “whatever it takes” to save the euro, will not be making major policy comments.

To some, that underscores how little progress there is to discuss.

“This in itself suggests that the Governing Council remains to be convinced that it should announce its QE tapering plans at its next meeting (in) September,” notes Victoria Clarke, economist at Investec. Fed Chair Janet Yellen will also speak.

One of them is in the form of typical musical instrument of Karangasem. It is known as penting musical instrument.

According to A.A. Gede Krisna Dwipayana, a penting craftsman and troupe member of Merdu Komala Karangasem, it is based on the strings stretched from the tip to the base of the tool when picked will produce maklenting sound, so that it is better named as penting.

Furthermore, he said that similar musical instrument can also be found in Lombok named penteng. Then, in Banjarmasin it is named as anting, while in Japan it is known as Taishogoto. Nevertheless, he said that such penting musical instrument indeed originates from Bali precisely in Karangasem because the name of the parts uses Balinese vocabularies. In addition to the strings called pentang, there is also a resonance box that must have a hollow (pelawah) and special keys to produce tones known as pakocet. Besides, there are canten and pangiret as parts of the string regulator.

“After I searched for information and consulted to several higher priests having close relations to Karangasem palace, it turns out that penting art has emerged along with the art of cekepung, rebana and rudat in Karangasem.

Moreover, during the Dutch colonial period, this kind of art was once staged in an art event called Ngeraja Kuning or similar to the current Bali Arts Festival (BAF) held to honor the Dutch King at that time,” he said.

After that, it reappeared and dimmed in 1965 due to the Communist 30 September Movement (G30S/ PKI) in Bali.

Then, it re-emerged but in the 1990s faded again as a result of the development of new entertainment media such as radio and TV so that people feel reluctant to learn it and many senior figures already died. Finally in the 2000s the penting art began to rise again marked by the establishment of this penting art troupe.

Widana further added that initially this penting musical instrument only used slendro musical scale. After further development, it finally becomes like the current one where it applies pelog scale and even seven-tone scale.

Uniqueness and advantages of this instrument, according to him, is rich in tone and having many patet (tonal hierarchical system) so that it can be used to accompany various types of gamelan music such as pegongan, angklungan, pejogedan, sadur and selonding. Moreover, it can also be used to accompany modern pop songs including national songs as it can also follow the seven tones.

“So, do not be surprised if this instrument is often played in Panca Yadnya rituals and its gamelan composition will be adjusted to the designation of the play, whether it is Dewa Yadnya, Pitra Yadnya, Manusa Yadnya, Rishi Yadnya or Bhuta Yadnya

because this instrument is flexible and can be categorized into Panca Gita as well,” said Wayan Widana.

Stretch and Pangecet Played Together AS a traditional musical instrument, the type of music genre that can be played certainly becomes one of the important things. The no less important of a musical instrument is how to play it in order to produce a beautiful sound. If it is not maximized, the instrument will be useless. This is also valid for penting musical instrument because other than having unique shape and producing distinctive sound, the most important is to be recognized and understood is the way or technique to play the instrument.

According to A.A. Gede Krisna Dwipayana, Bali basically has been familiar with percussion musical instrument such as twosided drum (kendang), gender and so on, while the unique penting belongs to stringed instrument like guitar.

Thus, moving the concept or familiarizing ourselves from percussion to stringed musical instrument played using pangotek or pick on guitar and maximize it is surely not easy and needs to be familiarized. Maximizing the pangotek is rarely noticed by

elderly penting player so that the gamelan composition presented with penting becomes imperfect.

In addition, the tetekepan or variation of the string plucking is usually missed because there is a technique of one-to-one plucking, some of which has three-time reciprocating, some are also turnedon and turned-off and there is even a plucking technique of turned onturned-off and turned-on again. All the types of plucking must be mastered as the needs of the gamelan composition being played.

“Unless familiarized and maximized, the sound produced will not become good. Moreover, the player cannot understand the types of tetekepan so the gamelan is unable to produce a good tone that should be beaten alternately,” he said.

Apart from the kotekan and tetekepan, this musical instrument has other uniqueness namely at the same time when the right hand plucking the left hand is mandatory to play the keys like playing piano to produce a tone.

However, the uniqueness precisely becomes the hardest point because it must play ‘intact’ where when moving finger from one key to the next keys, the first tone may not still be pressed when it should have moved to the second tone. Otherwise, the tone will be mixed, like the dong sounds like deng.

Wayan Widana also said that the difficulty of playing this penting instrument is when looking for a tone by pressing the keys.

This musical instrument should be placed sideways on the lap and simultaneously has to pluck the strings and move the fingers of the left hand like playing piano in order to get the desired tone.

He added the performance of this musical instrument is not necessarily played alone but must be paired with other musical instruments such as petuk, 2 pieces of kendang (twosided drum), flute, lincik, gong tulu, kempur and so on. Of course, to adjust the tone of penting instrument to the other instruments in group needs to be trained continuously. This instrument belongs to traditional and modern one.

It is said to be traditional because other than used to accompany gamelan composition, it is also included in the element of Panca Gita, while it is said to be modern because of being assisted with sound system so that it produces better and stronger sound and longer radius as well as uses 7-9 strings of guitar.

“In the past, before using guitar strings, it used the Vespa clutch string. Moreover, previously it is said to also use fishing lines. According to a senior figure, it once used the fiber of banana tree,” he said. (kmb)

Rare total solar eclipse spreads wonder across United States

CHARLESTON - As millions of awestruck Americans cast their gaze skyward on Monday at the extraordinary sight of a total solar eclipse, one Connecticut man had his eyes set firmly on a different prize.

Spanish police track down, shoot dead Barcelona attacker SUBIRATS - Spanish police on Monday shot dead an Islamist militant who killed 13 people with a van in Barcelona last week, ending a five-day manhunt for the perpetrator of Spain’s deadliest attack in over a decade.

Police said they tracked 22-yearold Younes Abouyaaqoub to a rural area near Barcelona and shot him after he held up what looked like an explosives belt and shouted “Allahu Akbar” (God is Greatest).

The bomb squad used a robot to approach his body.

Abouyaaqoub had been on the run since Thursday evening, after he drove at high speed into throngs of strollers along Barcelona’s most famous avenue, Las Ramblas. After fleeing the scene, he hijacked a car and fatally stabbed its driver.

Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, which police believe was planned by a dozen accomplices, including a brother and two first cousins of the Moroccanborn Abouyaaqoub.

Abouyaaqoub had been the only one of 12 accomplices still at large.

His mother, Hannou Ghanimi, had appealed for him to surrender, saying she would rather see him in jail than dead.

Of the other 11 in the militant cell, five were shot dead by police hours after the van attack, two were killed and one injured the day before in a blast in a house where they were apparently making explosives, and three were arrested elsewhere.

“Shortly before 5 p.m., the police shot down Younes Abouyaaqoub, the driver of the van in the attack that killed 14 people in Barcelona,” Carles Puigdemont, head of the Catalonia regional government, told a news conference.

He said the bomb belt turned out to be a fake one.

An employee at a petrol station, along an empty stretch of road between the towns of Subirats and Sant Sadurni d’Anoi, spotted a man resembling Abouyaaqoub and called the police.

Sant Sadurni Mayor Maria Rosell said all police forces in Catalonia converged on the town.

Police found Abouyaaqoub hiding in vineyards and shot him dead a kilometre down the road next to a sewage treatment plant.

Cristiano Pecchi, an Italian tourist, first heard gunfire at around 4 p.m. (1400 GMT) Shortly afterwards, he said, up to 30 police cars arrived along with helicopters and ambulances.

“I was just waiting for my car to be fixed and suddenly we heard gunfire and all hell was let loose,” he said.

The scene unfolded 40 km (25 miles) from the spot, close to the FC Barcelona soccer stadium on the outskirts of the city, where police said Abouyaaqoub had seized the hijacked car.

Police said Abouyaaqoub had first fled Las Ramblas on foot amid the chaos of the attack, then commandeered the car, stabbing the driver, 34-year-old Pau Perez, to death before smashing his way through a police checkpoint and ditching the car in the nearby town of Sant Just Desvern.

The four people arrested so far in connection with the attacks are three Moroccans and a citizen of Spain’s North African enclave of Melilla. They were taken on Monday to the high court in Madrid, which has jurisdiction over terrorism matters.

Indonesia court scraps new ride-hailing tariff rules

SINGAPORE/JAKARTA - Indonesia’s Supreme Court has ruled that tariff ranges imposed by the government last month on online ride-hailing services are illegal, saying they impede competition.

The Southeast Asian nation’s transport ministry introduced minimum and maximum tariffs for ride-hailing firms such as Uber Technologies, Indonesia’s GO-JEK

and Southeast Asia’s Grab from July 1.

It had cited a need to ensure comparable pricing with conventional transport providers and ad-

dress complaints of undercutting.

Drivers of Indonesia’s PT Blue Bird Tbk and PT Express Transindo Utama Tbk taxis had called for a ban on ride-hailing services, claiming they were subject to less stringent requirements than conventional taxis.

But the Supreme Court, responding to a petition filed by a group of individuals, ordered the scrapping of the tariff ranges in a ruling that was published on its website.

“The upper and lower tariff limits do not provide healthy business competition,” the ruling stated, adding it hiked fares for consumers.

The ruling annuls more than a dozen clauses in the recently released public transportation ministry regulation, including regional quotas for ride-hailing vehicles, requirements for all vehicles to be registered to companies, and restrictions on where “special hire” vehicles can operate.

Indonesia’s Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said his office was studying the ruling and would abide by the decisions and seek to avoid “unrest” in the sector.

The managing director for Grab in Indonesia and a spokeswoman for Uber in Jakarta also said they were studying the ruling and de-

clined to comment further.

Blue Bird Investor Relations head Michael Tene told Reuters the court ruling would not impact its operations because “the implementation of these regulations has been minimal and online taxis continued to operate outside the rules even before this Supreme Court ruling was issued.”

Indonesia is a key battleground in the region for ride-hailing companies which have been driving rates lower to attract more customers in the country with the world’s fourth-largest population and a youthful, Internet-savvy demographic. (rtr)

Strong protest to Malaysia needed: Mahfud MD

JAKARTA - Indonesia needs to send strong protest to Malaysia against the incident in which Malaysia has printed the Indonesian national flag upside down in the SEA Games 2017 reference book, former constitutional chief justice Mahfud MD said here Monday. “As a citizen the case must be followed up with a diplomatic note containing strong protest as it was not a light matter. That is a state symbol that may not be made fun of. There is a law that regulates state symbols.

If that happened in the country the punishment could be severe. That is why we must send a protest,” he said.

He said the case had made people angry and to be offended because Malaysia had shown carelessness to allow it to happen. That is why

people have had suspicion that Malaysia might have acted deliberately with regard to several unpleasant incidents that have happened so far, he said.

“So it is understandable that some of us suspected that it was a deliberate act and that is why the government must be firm in connection with it. We must reduce formalities. There must be a statement to protest it, a diplomatic note. I think that was really an unprofessional act,” he said.

The organizing committee of Malaysia SEA Games 2017 has printed a reference book in which the picture of the Indonesian flag was printed upside down. The mistake was discovered by Indonesian sports minister Imam Nahrawi and the Indonesian delegation attending

the opening of the sports event on Saturday (Aug 19).

Malaysian sports minister Khairy Jamaluddin later offered an apology for the mistake to Imam Nahrawi.

He also offered an apology to Indonesia and its people and said that the Malaysian foreign minister planned to officially offer an apology to the Indonesian government. Jamaluddin said he had ordered the committee to stop distributing the book and corrected it before reprinting it for distribution to guests.

MELBOURNE - Australia’s Jeff Horn has given Conor McGregor little chance of beating Floyd Mayweather in Saturday’s super-fight and hopes the American will “annihilate” the mixed martial arts fighter for the sake of boxing.

BARCELONA - Chris Froome became the new leader of the Vuelta A Espana on Monday after finishing third in the mountainous stage three as Italian Vincenzo Nibali snatched the stage win in the final 400m of the race in the Pyrenees in Andorra.

Froome, who is bidding to become the first rider to do a double of the Tour de France and the Vuelta in 39 years, set the stage alight with a vicious pace on the final climb of the 158.5 km stage, chaperoned by team mate Gianni Moscon, although he was eventually caught on the descent.

The Briton takes a two-second lead in the general classification over Spaniard David de la Cruz, Irishman Nicolas Roche and American Tejay Van Garderen, while Nibali, who won the Vuelta in 2010, is fifth, 10 seconds behind the four-time Tour de France champion.

“It’s a great surprise but I think it’s the result of a lot of hard work today from my team mates as well,” Froome told reporters.

“They did a fantastic job on the final climb. Especially a guy like Gianni Moscon – it’s his first Grand Tour with Team Sky. He was great today, as were the rest of the guys.”

Froome got to wear the Vuelta’s red jersey for only the second time, the first since he upstaged Bradley Wiggins with a shock win in the individual time trial in 2011 and took the cycling world by storm in coming second in the general classification.

Froome recalled his 2011 performance when explaining why he had pushed so hard in stage three.

“I’ve lost a Vuelta before by 13 seconds so I’m going to fight for every second I can at this point,” he said.

Pogba, who rejoined United from Juventus in 2016, scored five goals and provided four assists in 30 Premier League appearances last campaign.

Manchester United’s Paul Pogba is the world’s best midfield player and has the potential to win the Ballon d’Or in the next five years, the Frenchman’s club and national team mate Anthony Martial has said.

Pogba, who rejoined United from Juventus in 2016, scored five goals and provided four assists in 30 Premier League appearances last campaign.

BARCELONA - Chris Froome became the new leader of the Vuelta A Espana on Monday after finishing third in the mountainous stage three as Italian Vincenzo Nibali snatched the stage win in the final 400m of the race in the Pyrenees in Andorra.

Froome, who is bidding to become the first rider to do a double of the Tour de France and the Vuelta in 39 years, set the stage alight with a vicious pace on the final climb of the 158.5 km stage, chaperoned by team mate Gianni Moscon, although he was eventually caught on the descent.

The Briton takes a two-second lead in the general classification over Spaniard David de la Cruz, Irishman Nicolas Roche and American Tejay Van Garderen, while Nibali, who won the Vuelta in 2010, is fifth, 10 seconds behind the four-time Tour de France champion.

“It’s a great surprise but I think it’s the result of a lot of hard work today from my team mates as well,” Froome told reporters.

“They did a fantastic job on the final climb. Especially a guy like Gianni Moscon – it’s his first Grand Tour with Team Sky. He was great today, as were the rest of the guys.”

Rare total solar eclipse spreads wonder across United States

CHARLESTON - As millions of awestruck Americans cast their gaze skyward on Monday at the extraordinary sight of a total solar eclipse, one Connecticut man had his eyes set firmly on a different prize.

Joseph Fleming, 43, went down on one knee in the darkness near the harbor in Charleston, South Carolina, and asked Nicole Durham to marry him.

“The sun, the moon and my love, all in a straight line,” Fleming said, laughing, after Durham, 40, said yes.

The first total eclipse in a century to sweep across the United States from coast to coast inspired Americans to make marriage proposals, hold family reunions and take time from work to witness with wonder one of the cosmos’ rarest phenomena.

After weeks of anticipation, onlookers from Oregon to South Carolina whooped and cheered as the moon blotted out the sun, transforming a narrow band of the United States from day to night for two minutes at a time.

Even President Donald Trump stepped out of the White House to see the eclipse, though he was spotted briefly looking up without protective glasses, which can cause eye damage, as an aide yelled “Don’t look!”

“It’s more powerful than I expected,” Robert Sarazin Blake, 40, a singer from Bellingham, Washington, said after the eclipse passed over Roshambo ArtFarm in Sheridan, Oregon. “All of a sudden you’re completely in another world. It’s like you’re walking on air or tunneling underground like a badger.”

No area in the continental United States had seen a total solar eclipse since 1979, while the last coast-to-coast total eclipse took place in 1918.

The event was expected to draw one of the largest audiences in human history, including those watching on television and online.

Spanish police track down, shoot dead Barcelona attacker SUBIRATS - Spanish police on Monday shot dead an Islamist militant who killed 13 people with a van in Barcelona last week, ending a five-day manhunt for the perpetrator of Spain’s deadliest attack in over a decade.

Police said they tracked 22-yearold Younes Abouyaaqoub to a rural area near Barcelona and shot him after he held up what looked like an explosives belt and shouted “Allahu Akbar” (God is Greatest).

The bomb squad used a robot to approach his body.

Abouyaaqoub had been on the run since Thursday evening, after he drove at high speed into throngs of strollers along Barcelona’s most famous avenue, Las Ramblas. After fleeing the scene, he hijacked a car and fatally stabbed its driver.

Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, which police believe was planned by a dozen accomplices, including a brother and two first cousins of the Moroccanborn Abouyaaqoub.

Abouyaaqoub had been the only one of 12 accomplices still at large.

His mother, Hannou Ghanimi, had appealed for him to surrender, saying she would rather see him in jail than dead.

Of the other 11 in the militant cell, five were shot dead by police hours after the van attack, two were killed and one injured the day before in a blast in a house where they were apparently making explosives, and three were arrested elsewhere.

“Shortly before 5 p.m., the police shot down Younes Abouyaaqoub, the driver of the van in the attack that killed 14 people in Barcelona,” Carles Puigdemont, head of the Catalonia regional government, told a news conference.

He said the bomb belt turned out to be a fake one.

An employee at a petrol station, along an empty stretch of road between the towns of Subirats and Sant Sadurni d’Anoi, spotted a man resembling Abouyaaqoub and called the police.

Sant Sadurni Mayor Maria Rosell said all police forces in Catalonia converged on the town.

Police found Abouyaaqoub hiding in vineyards and shot him dead a kilometre down the road next to a sewage treatment plant.

Cristiano Pecchi, an Italian tourist, first heard gunfire at around 4 p.m. (1400 GMT) Shortly afterwards, he said, up to 30 police cars arrived along with helicopters and ambulances.

“I was just waiting for my car to be fixed and suddenly we heard gunfire and all hell was let loose,” he said.

The scene unfolded 40 km (25 miles) from the spot, close to the FC Barcelona soccer stadium on the outskirts of the city, where police said Abouyaaqoub had seized the hijacked car.

Police said Abouyaaqoub had first fled Las Ramblas on foot amid the chaos of the attack, then commandeered the car, stabbing the driver, 34-year-old Pau Perez, to death before smashing his way through a police checkpoint and ditching the car in the nearby town of Sant Just Desvern.

The four people arrested so far in connection with the attacks are three Moroccans and a citizen of Spain’s North African enclave of Melilla. They were taken on Monday to the high court in Madrid, which has jurisdiction over terrorism matters.

Indonesia court scraps new ride-hailing tariff rules

SINGAPORE/JAKARTA - Indonesia’s Supreme Court has ruled that tariff ranges imposed by the government last month on online ride-hailing services are illegal, saying they impede competition.

The Southeast Asian nation’s transport ministry introduced minimum and maximum tariffs for ride-hailing firms such as Uber Technologies, Indonesia’s GO-JEK

and Southeast Asia’s Grab from July 1.

It had cited a need to ensure comparable pricing with conventional transport providers and ad-

dress complaints of undercutting.

Drivers of Indonesia’s PT Blue Bird Tbk and PT Express Transindo Utama Tbk taxis had called for a ban on ride-hailing services, claiming they were subject to less stringent requirements than conventional taxis.

But the Supreme Court, responding to a petition filed by a group of individuals, ordered the scrapping of the tariff ranges in a ruling that was published on its website.

“The upper and lower tariff limits do not provide healthy business competition,” the ruling stated, adding it hiked fares for consumers.

The ruling annuls more than a dozen clauses in the recently released public transportation ministry regulation, including regional quotas for ride-hailing vehicles, requirements for all vehicles to be registered to companies, and restrictions on where “special hire” vehicles can operate.

Indonesia’s Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said his office was studying the ruling and would abide by the decisions and seek to avoid “unrest” in the sector.

The managing director for Grab in Indonesia and a spokeswoman for Uber in Jakarta also said they were studying the ruling and de-

clined to comment further.

Blue Bird Investor Relations head Michael Tene told Reuters the court ruling would not impact its operations because “the implementation of these regulations has been minimal and online taxis continued to operate outside the rules even before this Supreme Court ruling was issued.”

BUSINESS Getting to the core of global inflation LONDON- Stock markets have spent the year rising on bets of a resurgence in inflation, while central bankers trying to manage the global economy have spent the same time repeatedly reassuring everyone it’s just around the corner. Policymakers gathering at an annual monetary retreat in Jackson Hole, Wyoming in the coming week no doubt will be collectively pondering why the textbook rule that says low unemployment leads to labour shortages, then higher wages, and then in turn higher inflation, isn’t working.

Yet the global economy is growing strongly. Apart from the risk of a stock market correction, there is no evidence of disinflationary threats like those that emanated from the financial crisis that started to smoulder a decade ago. The latest Reuters Polls of more than 500 economists covering more than 45 economies around the world showed almost no move in inflation expectations since the start of the year.

In the United States, where the Federal Reserve is raising interest rates, inflation pressures are in an extended lull, which has led to contorted arguments trying to explain it away.

Omair Sharif, senior U.S. economist at Societe Generale, in a recent note titled “All my exes”, criticises a recent tendency to search for suitably favourable core measures of inflation - stripped of, or “ex-”, whatever components are holding it down.

“In short, while the core CPI undoubtedly looks better when you strip out sizable price declines, all these ‘ex’ measures still show a softening in the core rate that began in January,” he wrote. “Moreover, as we have noted before, the transitory excuse is long past its sell-by date.” Analysts who follow the European Central Bank have been equally disappointed that after spending 2 trillion or so euros buying mostly government bonds it’s

only running 1.3 percent euro zone inflation, still well below the 2.0 percent ceiling. Some measures of core inflation are even lower.

Frederik Ducrozet, economist at Pictet, has taken heart from a recent trend move higher in the “super core” euro zone inflation rate, which excludes the cost of package holidays.

The trouble is, the euro is on a tear higher. That is a reflection of vastly improved economic performance by many euro zone economies this year, but as the common currency climbs, it acts as a drag on exports and tamps down imported inflation.

Flash euro zone purchasing managers’ surveys in the coming week are likely to show continued strong business activity, but with tame price rises. ECB chief Mario Draghi, who famously sent shockwaves at a speech in London one month before the Jackson Hole summit five years ago proclaiming he would do “whatever it takes” to save the euro, will not be making major policy comments.

To some, that underscores how little progress there is to discuss.

“This in itself suggests that the Governing Council remains to be convinced that it should announce its QE tapering plans at its next meeting (in) September,” notes Victoria Clarke, economist at Investec. Fed Chair Janet Yellen will also speak.

One of them is in the form of typical musical instrument of Karangasem. It is known as penting musical instrument.

According to A.A. Gede Krisna Dwipayana, a penting craftsman and troupe member of Merdu Komala Karangasem, it is based on the strings stretched from the tip to the base of the tool when picked will produce maklenting sound, so that it is better named as penting.

Furthermore, he said that similar musical instrument can also be found in Lombok named penteng. Then, in Banjarmasin it is named as anting, while in Japan it is known as Taishogoto. Nevertheless, he said that such penting musical instrument indeed originates from Bali precisely in Karangasem because the name of the parts uses Balinese vocabularies. In addition to the strings called pentang, there is also a resonance box that must have a hollow (pelawah) and special keys to produce tones known as pakocet. “After I searched for information and consulted to several higher priests having close relations to Karangasem palace, it turns out that penting art has emerged along with the art of cekepung, rebana and rudat in Karangasem.

After that, it reappeared and dimmed in 1965 due to the Communist 30 September Movement (G30S/ PKI) in Bali.

Then, it re-emerged but in the 1990s faded again as a result of the development of new entertainment media such as radio and TV so that people feel reluctant to learn it and many senior figures already died. Finally in the 2000s the penting art began to rise again marked by the establishment of this penting art troupe.

Widana further added that initially this penting musical instrument only used slendro musical scale. After further development, it finally becomes like the current one where it applies pelog scale and even seven-tone scale.

Uniqueness and advantages of this instrument, according to him, is rich in tone and having many patet (tonal hierarchical system) so that it can be used to accompany various types of gamelan music such as pegongan, angklungan, pejogedan, sadur and selonding. Moreover, it can also be used to accompany modern pop songs including national songs as it can also follow the seven tones.

“So, do not be surprised if this instrument is often played in Panca Yadnya rituals and its gamelan composition will be adjusted to the designation of the play, whether it is Dewa Yadnya, Pitra Yadnya, Manusa Yadnya, Rishi Yadnya or Bhuta Yadnya

Stretch and Pangecet Played Together AS a traditional musical instrument, the type of music genre that can be played certainly becomes one of the important things. The no less important of a musical instrument is how to play it in order to produce a beautiful sound. If it is not maximized, the instrument will be useless. This is also valid for penting musical instrument because other than having unique shape and producing distinctive sound, the most important is to be recognized and understood is the way or technique to play the instrument.

According to A.A. Gede Krisna Dwipayana, Bali basically has been familiar with percussion musical instrument such as twosided drum (kendang), gender and so on, while the unique penting belongs to stringed instrument like guitar.

Thus, moving the concept or familiarizing ourselves from percussion to stringed musical instrument played using pangotek or pick on guitar and maximize it is surely not easy and needs to be familiarized. Maximizing the pangotek is rarely noticed by

elderly penting player so that the gamelan composition presented with penting becomes imperfect.

In addition, the tetekepan or variation of the string plucking is usually missed because there is a technique of one-to-one plucking, some of which has three-time reciprocating, some are also turnedon and turned-off and there is even a plucking technique of turned onturned-off and turned-on again. All the types of plucking must be mastered as the needs of the gamelan composition being played.

“Unless familiarized and maximized, the sound produced will not become good. Moreover, the player cannot understand the types of tetekepan so the gamelan is unable to produce a good tone that should be beaten alternately,” he said.

Apart from the kotekan and tetekepan, this musical instrument has other uniqueness namely at the same time when the right hand plucking the left hand is mandatory to play the keys like playing piano to produce a tone.

However, the uniqueness precisely becomes the hardest point because it must play ‘intact’ where when moving finger from one key to the next keys, the first tone may not still be pressed when it should have moved to the second tone. Otherwise, the tone will be mixed, like the dong sounds like deng.

Wayan Widana also said that the difficulty of playing this penting instrument is when looking for a tone by pressing the keys.

This musical instrument should be placed sideways on the lap and simultaneously has to pluck the strings and move the fingers of the left hand like playing piano in order to get the desired tone.

He added the performance of this musical instrument is not necessarily played alone but must be paired with other musical instruments such as petuk, 2 pieces of kendang (twosided drum), flute, lincik, gong tulu, kempur and so on. Of course, to adjust the tone of penting instrument to the other instruments in group needs to be trained continuously. This instrument belongs to traditional and modern one.

It is said to be traditional because other than used to accompany gamelan composition, it is also included in the element of Panca Gita, while it is said to be modern because of being assisted with sound system so that it produces better and stronger sound and longer radius as well as uses 7-9 strings of guitar.

“In the past, before using guitar strings, it used the Vespa clutch string. Moreover, previously it is said to also use fishing lines. According to a senior figure, it once used the fiber of banana tree,” he said. (kmb)

‘You never know’: South Korea rehearses for attack from the North

North Korea has threatened what it calls “merciless retaliation and punishment” against the US for American involvement in military and security drills in South Korea. The first official response from the North to the annual exercises came in a military statement from Pyongyang. North Korea has previously issued similar war-like rhetoric whenever US and South Korean troops conduct major joint exercises.

“Headman plays a very important role because it directly gets in touch with community where the prevalence of Bali in Indonesia is ranked eleventh in the matter of drug abuse,” said Suastawa, accompanied by the Rehabilitation Division Head of BNNP Bali, I Nyoman Artana.

He hoped to support all government institutions at all lev-

els, especially those that can directly supervise the community to achieve drug eradication in Indonesia. One of them is through the P4GN program so that it can run maximally. Headman has two major roles namely to prosper and secure its people. The functions of security include securing village environment from the hazards of drug abuse. Headman can mobilize

the community as the main actors so that people understand the problem of drugs in the environment as well as involve all the leaders, the government and private sector.

Headman plays its role in the rehabilitation. Thus, he added that it should be sensitive to prevent the development of drug trafficking into the neighborhood, such as by overseeing the construction of cafés or night spots. Be the first to report in case of narcoticsrelated incidents and always make coordination with the BNNP and BNNK.

Then, the role of hospital and health center in this rehabilitation program is preparing human resources and infrastructure for the P4GN activities. They should have an understanding that the addicts are sick and should be treated. People need to be made aware of the problem that drugs are common problems because they are more familiar with the environment and must be involved and active in preventing drugs and participate in developing prevention and rehabilitation programs. Cambridge University Press had earlier blocked certain articles after a request from China’s government.

BEIJING - A leading British academic publisher that bowed to pressure from Beijing to block online access to hundreds of scholarly articles in China reversed its position and reposted the material on Monday, following an outcry over

academic freedom.

Cambridge University Press (CUP) said late last week it had removed some 300 papers and book reviews published in the China Quarterly journal from its website in China following a request from

the Chinese government.

It said it had blocked the articles, which covered topics including the 1989 Tiananmen Square democracy protests, the 1960s Cultural Revolution and Tibet, in order to keep its other academic and educational materials available in the country.

The move sparked an outcry on all sides, with academics attacking the decision as an affront to academic freedom, while the state-run Global Times tabloid said publishers could leave the country if they did not like the “Chinese way”.

Cambridge University and Tim Pringle, the editor of the China Quarterly, confirmed the decision to repost the articles on Monday.

“As editor, I would like to express my support for CUP’s decision,” Pringle said in a statement on Twitter.

“Access to published materials of the highest quality is a core component of scholarly research.

It is not the role of respected global publishing houses such as CUP to

hinder such access.”

Cambridge University said the move to block content had been a “temporary decision”.

“Academic freedom is the overriding principle on which the University of Cambridge is based,” it said in a statement.

Reuters journalists in China found a sampling of China Quarterly articles on the banned list were available on CUP’s website (www. cambridge.org) late on Monday and downloadable for free.

The articles were previously only available to subscribers or by buying individually, but Pringle said he had requested CUP make them freely available.

The decision to remove the articles had sent shockwaves through the academic community, with one China-based Western academic describing it as a “big wake-up call” amid two years in which the erosion of academic freedom in China had “escalated alarmingly”.

The academic declined to be

named for fear of reprisals from the government.

Separately on Monday, the Association for Asian Studies (AAS) said it had been told by CUP it had received a similar request to remove access in China to about 100 articles from the Journal of Asian Studies.

CUP publishes the Journal of Asian Studies for the U.S.-based AAS. No Journal of Asian Studies articles had been removed from CUP’s website search results in China, the AAS said.

“The officers of the association are extremely concerned about this violation of academic freedom, and the AAS is in ongoing discussions with CUP about how it will respond to the Chinese government,” it said in a statement.

“We oppose censorship in any form and continue to promote a free exchange of academic research among scholars around the world.

New Nokia 8 phone targets surging demand for video-streaming

HELSINKI - HMD Global, the Finnish start-up looking to reinvigorate the Nokia phone brand, unveiled the Nokia 8 on Wednesday, hoping to cash in on rising consumer demand for high-quality audio and video features.

The Android device, due out in September, will potentially beat rivals on price but will still face fierce competition, with Apple’s highly anticipated 10th anniversary iPhone also expected next month and Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8 set to hit the market next week.

With a suggested price tag of around 599 euros ($703), the Nokia 8 undercuts Apple, which typically offers a stripped down version of its latest phones for a similar price but charges hundreds of euros more for memory and key features.

The new top-of-the-line Nokia sports a dual-sight video feature which enables simultaneous livestreaming on social media networks from both front and rear cameras on a split screen. It has licensed lens technology from camera maker Zeiss.

It is the most high-end phone so far from HMD, which was set up late last year and made a splash in May when it revived Nokia’s classic 3310 feature handset in new brightly coloured versions.

Other features of the Nokia 8, which will also

compete with Huawei’s recently launched P10, include surround-sound audio technology made for Nokia’s own virtual reality camera OZO for Hollywood professionals.

“This is especially meant for millennial creators, people who want to share what’s happening every day,” HMD’s chief marketing officer Pekka Rantala said.

HMD products are built by a unit of Foxconn, which acquired the manufacturing and distribution assets of the former Nokia phone business from Microsoft last year.

Once the world’s dominant phonemaker, Nokia Oyj sold its handset operations to Microsoft in 2014, leaving it to focus on telecoms network equipment.

HMD is owned by Smart Connect LP, a private equity fund managed by Jean-Francois Baril, a longserving former senior vice president of Nokia. It took over the Nokia feature phones business in December and has a licensing deal giving it sole use of the Nokia brand on all phones and tablets.

It has so far launched four smartphones and five feature phones, including the 3310.

Rantala said he was happy with initial sales of the previous smartphones, but declined to disclose any sales figures yet.

He described that fire on some hectares of land taking place on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 20) could be extinguished by a joint officer consisting of the regional disaster mitigation agency (BPBD), police, military and fire brigade assisted by local residents at 24:00.

Although the situation is fairly safe, similar incidents still have the potential to happen.

“So far, we have not made fire-prone mapping. But seeing the condition of the area overgrown with grass plus approaching dry season, the fire is still potential to happen. This needs to be alerted by the community. Do not throw cigarettes indiscriminately and do not burning garbage. Please pay attention to security matter,” he said.

Amid such situation, the availability of fire extinguishers is not sufficient. In Nusa Penida, there is only a unit of fire truck without the support of water supply from tank truck. This causes the fire handling to be a bit slower. “We still lack of infrastructure and facilities. In yesterday’s fire handling, we were helped by the tank truck of PDAM. Indonesia to buy $1.14 billion worth of Russian jets

JAKARTA - Indonesia will buy 11 Sukhoi fighter jets worth $1.14 billion from Russia in exchange for cash and Indonesian commodities, two cabinet ministers said on Tuesday.

The Southeast Asian country has pledged to ship up to $570 million worth of commodities in addition to cash to pay for the Suhkoi SU-35 fighter jets, which are expected to be delivered in stages starting in two years.

Indonesian Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita said in a joint statement with Defence Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu that details of the type and volume of commodities were “still being negotiated”. Previously he had said the exports could include palm oil, tea, and coffee.

The deal is expected to be finalised soon between Indonesian state trading company PT Perusahaan Perdangangan Indonesia and Russian state conglomerate Rostec.

Russia is currently facing a new round of U.S.-imposed trade sanctions.

Meanwhile, Southeast Asia’s largest economy is trying to promote its palm oil products amid threats of a cut in consumption by European Union countries. Indonesia is also trying to modernise its ageing air force after a string of military aviation accidents.

Area Manager of PLN North Bali, Ansats Pram Andreas Simamora, said that to run the electricity in the region, PLN invested as much as IDR 1.7 billion to build the network. Mental revolution through national reading habit movement

AMLAPURA - Various ways are carried out by central government to realize the ideals of the mental revolution. One of them is by re-growing the reading habit in the middle of younger generations.

Results of the survey by Central Statistics Agency (BPS) indicate that 90.27 percent of Indonesians prefer watching TV rather than reading. This was also highlighted by a member of Commission X of the House of Representatives of the RI, Ida Bagus Putu Sukarta, in his presentation as a speaker in the National Reading Habit Movement on Monday (Aug. 21) at UKM Center Building, Amlapura.

The dissemination was packed in a talk show featuring four speakers from professional and bureaucratic background. The movement was greeted enthusiastically as seen from the audience reaching 200 people from school library management, students, reading habit activists, librarian as well as youth, religious and cultural figures. He hoped that to make people live a smarter life, the library should be tailored to the culture of the user community so as to provide added value for community.

Regent of Karangasem, I Gusti Ayu Mas Sumatri, after opening the activity asked schools to look at the law about the library. Referring to the Law No. 43/2007 on library, schools / Islamic-based schools are required to allocate at least five percent of the operating budget of school or expenditure of goods outside of personnel expenditure and capital expenditures for the library development. “The reading movement should continue to grow, especially from schools preceded with resolving the problem of library,” he affirmed. In the meantime, the Main Secretary of the National Library of Indonesia who attended the dissemination, Dedi Djunaedi, said that in the mental revolution proclaimed by the government, the library occupies a stra-

tegic position to contribute in strengthening mentality of cultural independence, mentality of mutual assistance and mentality of service culture.

Libraries provide various programs such as services and reading habit that are closely related to mental revolution.

Therefore, the presence of library institution with the support of competent librarians should be able to provide and serve quality reading materials, in accordance with local culture, posing typicality of Indonesia.

I Nyoman Tusthi Eddy, one of the prolific literati of Karangasem-born also asked the schools to make library interesting. By that way, it encourages the interest of students to make a visit and read their favorite books. Nowadays, many

young literati have been born from such process. However, they get minimal space and support to express their creativity. In accordance with the theme ‘Implementation of Mental Revolution through National Reading Habit Movement to Increase Reading Society Index’ he wanted the literati to be given the space to continuously work and foster their interest in reading.

The dissemination also featured keynote speakers such as the Head of Bali Archives and Library, Luh Putu Haryani, and the Head of Karangasem Library and Archives, I Komang Daging. In the meantime, Regent of Bangli, I Made Gianyar, recently stated that the water of Lake Batur does suffer from severe pollution. Other than pollution, the lake also experiences siltation. According to him, to prevent the pollution of the lake water from getting worse, the government will make a kind of dam at the village boundary to filter water from the river into the lake so that it will not be getting dirty.

In addition, he also invited all farmers around Lake Batur to change their pattern of agriculture to return to use organic farming system. If currently still using chemical fertilizer, they are expected to shift to the use of organic fertilizer.

“We will involve headman to make activities that invite people having not implemented organic farming system to apply this new farming system. The measure is done to prevent water pollution at the lake from getting worse in the future. It also includes the use of machine to pump water, considering that its oil, gasoline and diesel fuel used can also pollute the lake water,” said Made Gianyar. (kmb41)

But in reality, many people are still hunting them for personal interests. Therefore, it is also humans that can also help save the animals from extinction. World Elephant and World Orangutan Day are set to remind the world for a moment to care about the existence of these amazing animals. ‘Logan Lucky’ writer mystery: Is she real?

Yes, says Adam Driver LONDON - The mystery over the identity of the screenwriter of “Logan Lucky” deepened on Monday when actor Adam Driver said the woman had been on the set of the heist caper movie.

“Logan Lucky,” directed by Steven Soderbergh and set in the world of NASCAR racing, has made headlines because of speculation over whether its first-time screenwriter, Rebecca Blunt, really exists or is a pseudonym.

Driver’s remarks appear to be the first reported sighting of Blunt.

Asked at the film’s London premiere on Monday whether he had met Rebecca Blunt, Driver told Reuters Television: “Yeah.”

“So she is real?,” Driver was asked.

“Yes, she’s been on set,” Driver added.

The Hollywood Reporter, citing multiple unnamed sources, said in July that no writer named Rebecca Blunt existed and that the name was a ruse that deceived Driver and his co-stars Daniel Craig and Channing Tatum while the film was being shot.

The Hollywood Reporter in July noted that Blunt has no other mentions in movie and film union databases and has never been interviewed or photographed during promotions for the film.

The trade publication also recalled that Soderbergh invented names for what was in fact his work as a film editor and cinematographer on his 2015 film “Magic Mike XXL.” Soderbergh responded in July to the speculation about Blunt’s existence by telling Entertainment Weekly, “When people make a statement like that, they should be very careful, especially when it’s a woman screenwriter who is having her first screenplay produced.”

The Billboard 200 chart tallies units from album sales, song sales (10 songs equal one album) and streaming activity (1,500 streams equal one album).

SINGAPORE - U.S. Navy and Marine Corps divers on Tuesday found some remains of missing sailors inside sections of a U.S. guided-missile destroyer that collided with a merchant vessel near Singapore, the commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet said. The USS John S. McCain and the tanker Alnic MC collided on Monday while the U.S. ship was approaching Singapore on a routine port call. The impact tore a hole in the warship’s port side at the waterline, flooding compartments that included a crew sleeping area.

U.S. Pacific Fleet Commander Admiral Scott Swift said an international search-and-rescue operation had found some remains and that the wider search for 10 sailors missing from the accident would continue until all hope was exhausted.

“The divers were able to locate some remains in those sealed compartments during their search,” Swift told reporters at Singapore’s Changi Naval Base where the USS John S McCain is docked for damage assessment. “Additionally, the Malaysian authorities have reported that they have located potential remains. They are working to confirm and identify those remains.” He did

not specify how many remains had been found.

The Malaysian navy said in a statement it had found a body eight nautical miles northwest of the collision site and it would transfer it to the U.S. Navy on Wednesday. Swift also said Monday’s collision - the fourth major accident in the U.S. Pacific fleet this year - could not be viewed in isolation from other incidents and that investigations were seeking to find a “common cause at the root of these events”.

The John S. McCain’s sister ship, the Fitzgerald, almost sank off the coast of Japan after colliding with a Philippine container ship on June 17. The bodies of seven U.S. sailors

were found in a flooded berthing area after that collision. The latest accident has already prompted a fleet-wide investigation and plans for temporary halts in operations.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence said to have sailors killed in two collisions this year was disconcerting.
