LOS ANGELES - “Annabelle: Creation” may not be able to save the summer -- which, after this weekend, will only fall farther behind last year’s pace -- but it is doing its part to frighten audiences into theaters. The latest from New Line and Warner Bros, which serves as the fourth installment in what has become the “Conjuring” extended universe, is casting its evil eye on $35 million from 3,502 locations. That’s a strong start for the horror flick, which was made for about $15 million. The track record for the franchise is strong -- “Annabelle” ($37.1 million); “The Conjuring” ($41.9 million); and “The Conjuring 2” ($40.4 million). David F. Sandberg directed the sequel about a dollmaker whose creation terrorizes a group of orphan girls. For those invested in the “Conjuring” canon, it serves as a prequel to the first “Annabelle.” Stephanie Sigman, Talitha Bateman, Anthony LaPaglia, and Miranda Otto star in the pic that critics have generally given a thumbs up to (it currently has an 68% on Rotten Tomatoes). “Annabelle is scary as hell,” said Jeff Goldstein, distribution chief at Warner Bros. “And it’s exciting to see

how broadly audiences enjoyed it,” he said, adding, “I think our marketing team did a fabulous job.” The same studio’s “Dunkirk” continues to show strong during its fourth weekend, as it holds onto second place. One of the lone bright spots in a generally dismal summer for the box office, Christopher Nolan’s World War II epic should make an additional $11.4 million this weekend, pushing its domestic total past the $150 million mark. While it should land in the top three, Open Road’s sequel “Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature” appears to be a miss. From 4,003 locations, the animated adventure should earn $8.9 million. That’s less than half of the first “Nut Job” movie, which opened to $19.4 million before going on to take in $120.9 million worldwide during its run. Portugal asks for help from Europe to fight fires

LISBON - More than 3,000 firemen struggled to put out forest fires across Portugal on Sunday, after the country requested assistance from Europe to fight blazes that threaten to spread with more hot weather in the coming days. Exceptionally dry and hot weather ignited Portugal’s worst fire disaster in memory early this summer, killing 64 people, and fires have continued to flare up in recent weeks with the arrival of each new hotter spell of weather. Interior Minister Constanca Urbana de Sousa said the country sent the request for help to Europe late on Saturday because of concerns that high temperatures and high winds in the coming days could increase the number of fires. The minister said the request was carried out “because of a question of prudence” due to the weather forecast for coming days, according to news agency Lusa. It covered requests for firefighting airplanes and firemen and

is part of a European mechanism for cooperation to fight fires. Emergency services said 268 fires broke out on Saturday, the highest number for any single day this year, with 6,500 firemen fighting to put them out. There are fears that many of them could flare up again later on Sunday, with higher winds and temperatures that hit in the afternoon. The central district of Coimbra adopted a local state of emergency to deal with fires, as did four smaller municipalities in the region. While fires have burned through the summer none has had the tragic impact of the one in late June, as emergency services have gone to far greater efforts to evacuate villages

and shut roads early in affected areas. But the country could face many more weeks of fires before the end of summer. More than 140,000 hectares of forest have burned this summer in Portugal, more than three times higher than the average over the last 10 years, according to European Union data. Plastic waste processed Jumpai tourism development to produce electricity hampered by spatial plan SEMARAPURA — Jumpa Village in the subdistrict of Klungkung has a lot of potential for developing tourism – especially along the coast. The local community hopes that it can be developed and become known to more people. However such plans cannot be realized because according to the regional spatial planning (RTRW) this area is zoned industrial. Headman of Jumpai, Wayan Sudiarna, revealed that over the last few years, quite a lot of foreign tourists have been coming to this beach to surf and enjoy the seaside. The local community therefor hopes to develop this area as a tourist destination. Arrangements for supporting facilities for surfing have not however been able to be implemented. “For a long time, local people have been very hopeful about developing this surfing spot. But because this area has been included in the industrial zone as set forth in the spatial plan (RTRW), this dream reamains constrained”, he said on Sunday (Aug. 13). To overcome this issue, Sudiarna has submitted a request for a review of the status of this region from the regional development planning board (Bappeda) of Klungkung. He expects to get an answer soon. “The request has been submitted. We hope this can become a tourist area” he said. Although the spatial plan issue has yet to be resolved, promotion of this coastal area has already taken place by organizing events like the Jumpai Surfing Club initiated by Çanthi Wacana Samanjaya customary youth club of Jumpai village. “Today (Sunday—Ed) there is a surfing event. It is one of the ways to promote the potential of this coast” , he said. The event also received a positive response from the regent of Klungkung, I Nyoman Suwirta. (kmb45)

Culture agency plands cultural event at Candra Bhuana art center

AMLAPURA — After being developed throughout 2016, the Candra Buana Art Center has finally been handed over by the project leader to the Karangasem culture agency. The handover however only includes maintenance – not as an asset, which means that the culture agency can use the profits from from prevosou projects. The Karangasem Culture Agency is currently designing cultural events to be held twice a month. Head of the Karangasem Culture Agency, Putu Arnawa, said on Friday (Aug. 11) that the schedueld art events will allow art studios in Karangasem to perform regularly. This will also provide an opportunity for every village in Karangasem to show off its arts and culture. “This means that after the handover of maintenance, this Candra Buana Art Center can be utilized by the local government and we plan to hold cultural events twice a month”, said Arnawa. These events are part of the culture agency’s ongoing efforts to show off what Karangasem has to offer in terms of performing arts. These events will also help to preserve rt and culture in Karanagasem and support the City of Karangasem status as a Heritage City. The physical work of constructing the art center that started in 2016 will continue until 2019. Because the construction has yet to be completed, although the the maintenance of the buildings has been handed over, it is still under the responsibility of the provincial working unit. Arnawa added that construction in 2018 and 2019 will include the planned construction of a palm- leaf manuscripts museum in the west of the art center and several supporting facilites. “This is a part of the heritage city program and there should be additional physical buildings as supporting facilities that indicate the heritage city. One of them is this palm-leaf manuscript museum and cultural event at this venue”, he said. The arrangement of the heritage city project is centered at the Candra Buna Square, Amlapura. It is being worked on by the Ministry of Public Works and People’s Housing. The Candra Buana square is being totally transformed from a sport field into an art center. Karangasem is a A category heritage meaning it is one of the top 10 Best Heritage Cities in Indonesia. Given this status, the local government hopes to preserve the heritage asets of this city. SEMARAPURA —Processing plastic waste into electricity is being tested by Klungkung’s district government. Processing has started in Gunaksa village, Dawan and will be followed by giving out information to public. If this breakthrough program is able to run optimally, it will be expanded to a larger scale. Head of the Klungkung Environment and Land Agency, Anak Agung Kirana, explained on Sunday (Aug. 13) that problem of garbage in Klungkung has become quite worrying. One of the problems is a lack of public awareness regarding processing. Garbage is thrown out hapharzardly with consideration for the natural environment. The district government in fact handles garbage regularly hauling it off to the Sente landfill in Gunaksa village where it is also sorted. However, the 9,800 square meters area of the landfill has become overloaded in the last few years. Every day, there are at least 20 garbage trucks dumping refuse there. “Actually, the landfill can

no longer accommodate any additional waste”, he said. The district government has therefor been looking for a new way to process garbage – especially plastic. They now plan to process the plastic garbage into briquettes that can be used to produce electricity. This project is being done in cooperation with PT (Persero) PLN as is schedule to start in November. They plan to process one ton of waste into briquettes every day. “Each ton of waste will be processed into 400 kilograms of briquettes, equivalent to 15 kilo watts of electricity”, he explained. Land for the processing, continued Kirana, has already been provided by the village and so has the labor.

As for equipment, the experts that will guide the project for one year as well as other costs will be borne by PT PLN. If the project works, it will be developed on a larger scale. They also have plans to treat plastic waste though cooperation with the district government and the companies that produce the discarded products. “We have a plastic trash hunting movement. Later on, it will be sorted out according to the product brand”, he said. When asked about the overloaded landfill, Kirana explained that the local government plans to dispose of additional garbage at the district of Bangli’s regional landfill, however he added that this process is still being discussed. Revention of cervical cancer by vaccination constrained by cost

SEMARAPURA — There is a fairly high demand amongst housewives in Klungkung for get vaccinated for cervical cancer. However the cost of the vaccine is prohibitive for most. Chairperson of the Indonesian Cancer Cervical Foundation of Klungkung, Mrs. Ayu Suwirta, during an information session being held in the Praja Mandala Room of Klungkung regent’s office on Friday (Aug. 11), explained that the vaccine needs to be administered three times.

Although the cost for all three vaccines has gone down from IDR 4 million to just IDR 1.5 million this is still too expensive for many housewives. “Many housewives are interested in getting this vaccine, but the cost is still too high” she said. Having the district government bear the cost of this vaccine is not possible as it would require too large of a budget. Her foundation she said cannot force them to pay for it, but can only appeal to them to do so. “We can only explain that

it is important and that the number of cancer patients increases every year” she added. Along with information about cervical cancer, the information session also conveyed the importance children being vaccinated for dengue and Japanese Encephalitis (JE) disease. “The administering of the JE vaccination will be conducted around October and November”, said Division Head of Disease Prevention and Control at the Klungkung Health Agency, Wayan Jaya Putra. Scientists create safer pig organs with goal of transplants for humans

MASSACHUSETTS - Scientists at a Massachusetts company seeking to make pig organs safe enough to be transplanted into humans have used gene-editing technology to clone piglets that lack a potentially dangerous retrovirus, according to a study released on Thursday. The breakthrough, according to authors of the study published in the journal Science, could help pave the way for transplantation of whole pig organs into humans, without fear of patients being infected with the pig retrovirus. But other hurdles remain. Transplants from pigs could offer a new potentially life-saving alternative for patients diagnosed with organ failure and no other vi-

able treatment options. A shortage of available human organs has led scientists to study the possibility of animal donors to close the gap. About 20 people die each day in the United States while awaiting an organ transplant, according to the United Network for Organ Sharing. The latest experiment was conducted by scientists at the Cambridge, Massachusetts-based compa-

ny eGenesis. They used a technology known as CRISPR that works as a type of molecular scissors, trimming away unwanted parts of a genome. The scientists created pig genes that lacked the problematic retrovirus, then used a cloning technique to produce pig embryos, according to a statement from eGenesis. The embryos were implanted into normal sows, and the mother pigs later

gave birth to the cloned piglets. The clones, which were born without the retrovirus, will be monitored for long-term effects from the procedure. “This research represents an important advance in addressing safety concerns about cross-species viral transmission,” Luhan Yang, co-founder and chief scientific officer at eGenesis, said in a statement. Pigs have long been seen as a viable source for organ transplants to humans because their organs are similar in size. Scientists have specifically studied the

potential for transplanting swine hearts, kidneys, livers and lungs. Scientists in decades past experimented with transplanting chimpanzee organs into human patients but turned their focus to pig organs instead after finding them to be more suitable donor candidates. One key remaining obstacle is how to produce pig organs that, once transplanted, will not produce an immunological rejection in human patients -- an issue also under study by eGenesis scientists, the company said. BEIJING - China has sent an “unbreakable” code from a satellite to the Earth, marking the first time spaceto-ground quantum key distribution technology has been realized, state media said on Thursday. China launched the world’s first quantum satellite last August, to help establish “hack proof” communications, a development the Pentagon has called a “notable advance”. The official Xinhua news agency said the latest experiment was published in the journal Nature on Thursday, where reviewers called it a “milestone”.

The satellite sent quantum keys to ground stations in China between 645 km (400 miles) and 1,200 km (745 miles) away at a transmission rate up to 20 orders of magnitude more efficient than an optical fiber, Xinhua cited Pan Jianwei, lead scientist on the experiment from the state-run Chinese Academy of Sciences, as saying. “That, for instance, can meet the demand of making an absolute safe phone call or transmitting a large amount of bank data,” Pan said. Any attempt to eavesdrop on the quantum channel would introduce

detectable disturbances to the system, Pan said. “Once intercepted or measured, the quantum state of the key will change, and the information being intercepted will self-destruct,” Xinhua said. The news agency said there were “enormous prospects” for applying this new generation of communications in defense and finance. China still lags behind the United States and Russia in space technology, although President Xi Jinping has prioritized advancing its space program, citing national security and defense. (rtr)

Along with the increase in both the quantity and quality of information technology there is an increased interest and curiosity amongst Balinese people themselves about things that have become part of daily life. People are not so easily satisfied with the answer “that’s just how it is” about the art, culture and other aspects of daily life for Balinese, like oblations, paraphanalia and the use of animals in rituals. When discussing about the use of animals in the oblations (bebantenan), of course we will talk about the use of animal meat in the oblations. According to I Gede Agus Budi Adnyana, a humanist and lecturer at State Hindu Dharma Institute (IHDN) Denpasar, we cannot talk about bebantenan without mentioning the use of animal meat in oblations. Various Hindu rituals in Bali often use animal flesh as an offering that has an almost equal position to flowers in oblations. For example, peras oblation must contain grilled chicken otherwise they are not considered complete. Adnyana said that it is stated in one of the slokas or couplets of the Rig Veda: “what is on the grilled meat, oil and the meat itself should not be thrown onto the grass, offer it to the gods”. This, he said, confirms that meat is one of the important means in the oblations. Besides, in the practice of Bhairava Tantra, flesh is one of the main offerings in ritual because it is also life-giver of the universe. “In terms of the type of animals uses, Manawa Dharmasastra states that livestock such as chickens, ducks or pigs are used in accordance with the rituals or local traditions of different areas”, said Adnyana. He added that offering in the form of meat as stated in the Rig Veda become the most important and the most classical rituals. In addition, there are also animals like cows and buffalos that tend to be used in the Ngusaba or Mamungkah rituals. The animal is skinned, and the skin and the head are used as titi mamah or as a foundation for the arrival of deities as inspired by the story of the legendary demon Mahisasura who was eradicated by Goddess Durga. Moreover, in the ceremony of Bhatara Turun Kabeh, the titi mamah like this is also used as a foothold before the deity’s effigy it brought up to the peselang pavilion. According to Ida Bagus Alit, senior figure of Griya Anyar Manuaba, Baha, the type of meat is adjusted to the direction. However, he added that implementation of certain caru ritual such as Caru Wrehaspati Kalpa in the grandiose ritual will usually use other animals such as goats. Then, other animals are used for each direction like celeng butuan (male piglet) for north point, black-winged goose for the west and white swan for the east and then dog for the south according to the instructions of Ida Pedanda. Manusha yadnya activities like babayuhan (exorcism rites) also use chicken. In the case of an inauspicious birth where the pawukon-based birthday (otonan) coincides with full moon, a redemption by bebayuhan must be performed using a white chicken dedicated to Shiva Raditya but if the birth coiicides with the new moon a black chicken is used and is to be offered to the Goddess Ratih. “Chickens in the bebayuhan ritual will be roasted or steamed because after the ritual the chicken meat will be enjoyed by the person for whom the exorcism rite is conducted”, he explained. Yemen records 500,000 cholera cases, nearly 2,000 deaths - WHO

GENEVA - More than half a million people in Yemen have been infected with cholera since the epidemic began four months ago and 1,975 people have died, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Monday. Each day there are more than 5,000 new cases of the waterborne disease, which causes acute diarrhoea and dehydration, in the country where the health system has collapsed after more than two years of war, it said. “The total number of suspected cholera cases in Yemen this year hit the half a million mark on Sunday, and nearly 2,000 people have died since the outbreak began to spread rapidly at the end of April,” the WHO said in a statement on Monday. “The spread of cholera has slowed significantly in some areas compared to peak levels but the disease is still spreading fast in more recently affected districts, which are recording large numbers of cases,” it said, reporting a total of 503,484 cases. The disease, spread by ingestion of food or water tainted with human faeces, can kill within hours if untreated. It has been largely eradicated in developed countries equipped with sanitation systems and water treatment. But Yemen’s devastating civil war, pitting a Saudi-led military coalition against the Iran-backed armed Houthi group, and economic collapse has made it extremely difficult to deal with catastrophes such as cholera and mass hunger. Millions of Yemenis remain cut off from clean water and waste collection has ceased in major cities, the WHO added. Yemen’s 30,000 critical health workers have not been paid salaries in nearly a year and critical medicines are lacking, the WHO said. “These doctors and nurses are the backbone of the health response – without them we can do nothing in Yemen. They must be paid their wages so that they can continue to save lives,” said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. WHO and partners are working around the clock to set up cholera treatment clinics, rehabilitate health facilities, deliver medical supplies and support the national effort, the United Nations agency said. More than 99 percent of patients who reach health facilities survive but children and the elderly are most vulnerable. “The response is working in some places. We can tell you that surveillance confirms a decline in suspected cases over the past four weeks in some of the most affected governorates,” WHO spokeswoman Fadela Chaib told a news briefing last Friday. “Most notably Sanaa city, Hajja and Amran are consistent with his decline. Do not think linear; do not get trapped in monotonous routines,” the president stated during the opening of the 11th National Raimuna as part of the 56th Pramuka Day celebrations at the Cibubur Camp Ground, East Jakarta, on Monday. According to Jokowi, the current generation of scouts comprises millennials, or Generation Y, that think differently as compared to the previous ones. It is an innovative and creative generation that is adaptive to technological advancements, Jokowi pointed out. Hence, he urged the scout guides to always educate the younger generation of scout members not only in terms of marching line, building tents, or tying knots but also in other areas.

“They have to guide our young pramuka to be disciplined while using social media for positive and productive purposes,” Jokowi noted. The Pramuka should use creative and contemporary ways that are closer to the millennial generation to instill a sense of pride and devotion towards their country. To this end, every old approach that is no longer fit for the young generation must be abandoned. This years National Raimuna is attended by 15 thousand members of “pramuka” in the age group of 16 and 25 years from 34 provinces of Indonesia and some representatives from friendly countries. MANCHESTER - Romelu Lukaku struck twice on his Premier League debut for Manchester United as Jose Mourinho’s side made an emphatic start to their campaign with a 4-0 win over West Ham United at Old Trafford on Sunday.
