LOS ANGELES - “Annabelle: Creation” may not be able to save the summer -- which, after this weekend, will only fall farther behind last year’s pace -- but it is doing its part to frighten audiences into theaters.

The latest from New Line and Warner Bros, which serves as the fourth installment in what has become the “Conjuring” extended universe, is casting its evil eye on $35 million from 3,502 locations. That’s a strong start for the horror flick, which was made for about $15 million.

The track record for the franchise is strong -- “Annabelle” ($37.1 million); “The Conjuring” ($41.9 million); and “The Conjuring 2” ($40.4 million). David F. Sandberg directed the sequel about a dollmaker whose creation terrorizes a group of orphan girls. For those invested in the “Conjuring” canon, it serves as a prequel to the first “Annabelle.” Stephanie Sigman, Talitha Bateman, Anthony LaPaglia, and Miranda Otto star in the pic that critics have generally given a thumbs up to (it currently has an 68% on Rotten Tomatoes).

“Annabelle is scary as hell,” said Jeff Goldstein, distribution chief at Warner Bros. “And it’s exciting to see

how broadly audiences enjoyed it,” he said, adding, “I think our marketing team did a fabulous job.”

The same studio’s “Dunkirk” continues to show strong during its fourth weekend, as it holds onto second place.

One of the lone bright spots in a generally dismal summer for the box office, Christopher Nolan’s World War II epic should make an additional $11.4 million this weekend, pushing its domestic total past the $150 million mark.

While it should land in the top three, Open Road’s sequel “Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature” appears to be a miss. From 4,003 locations, the animated adventure should earn $8.9 million. That’s less than half of the first “Nut Job” movie, which opened to $19.4 million before going on to take in $120.9 million worldwide during its run. The sequel’s story centers around a group of animals who attempt to save their home from being bulldozed and turned into an amusement park. (rtr)

ing unusual materials to make images a couple of years ago, experimenting with coffee, salt and sand before settling on the tobacco technique because it is more durable.

“The idea is that I’m trying to make the art live longer,” he told Reuters.

Portugal asks for help from Europe to fight fires

LISBON - More than 3,000 firemen struggled to put out forest fires across Portugal on Sunday, after the country requested assistance from Europe to fight blazes that threaten to spread with more hot weather in the coming days.

Exceptionally dry and hot weather ignited Portugal’s worst fire disaster in memory early this summer, killing 64 people, and fires have continued to flare up in recent weeks with the arrival of each new hotter spell of weather. Interior Minister Constanca Urbana de Sousa said the country sent the request for help to Europe late on Saturday because of concerns that high temperatures and high winds in the coming days could increase the number of fires.

The minister said the request was carried out “because of a question of prudence” due to the weather forecast for coming days, according to news agency Lusa. It covered requests for firefighting airplanes and firemen and

is part of a European mechanism for cooperation to fight fires.

Emergency services said 268 fires broke out on Saturday, the highest number for any single day this year, with 6,500 firemen fighting to put them out. There are fears that many of them could flare up again later on Sunday, with higher winds and temperatures that hit in the afternoon.

The central district of Coimbra adopted a local state of emergency to deal with fires, as did four smaller municipalities in the region.

While fires have burned through the summer none has had the tragic impact of the one in late June, as emergency services have gone to far greater efforts to evacuate villages

and shut roads early in affected areas.

But the country could face many more weeks of fires before the end of summer.

More than 140,000 hectares of forest have burned this summer in Portugal, more than three times higher than the average over the last 10 years, according to European Union data. Plastic waste processed Jumpai tourism development to produce electricity hampered by spatial plan SEMARAPURA — Jumpa Village in the subdistrict of Klungkung has a lot of potential for developing tourism – especially along the coast. The local community hopes that it can be developed and become known to more people. However such plans cannot be realized because according to the regional spatial planning (RTRW) this area is zoned industrial.

Headman of Jumpai, Wayan Sudiarna, revealed that over the last few years, quite a lot of foreign tourists have been coming to this beach to surf and enjoy the seaside. The local community therefor hopes to develop this area as a tourist destination. Arrangements for supporting facilities for surfing have not however been able to be implemented.

“For a long time, local people have been very hopeful about developing this surfing spot. But because this area has been included in the industrial zone as set forth in the spatial plan (RTRW), this dream reamains constrained”, he said on Sunday (Aug. 13).

To overcome this issue, Sudiarna has submitted a request for a review of the status of this region from the regional development planning board (Bappeda) of Klungkung. He expects to get an answer soon. “The request has been submitted. We hope this can become a tourist area” he said.

Although the spatial plan issue has yet to be resolved, promotion of this coastal area has already taken place by organizing events like the Jumpai Surfing Club initiated by Çanthi Wacana Samanjaya customary youth club of Jumpai village. “Today (Sunday—Ed) there is a surfing event. It is one of the ways to promote the potential of this coast” , he said. The event also received a positive response from the regent of Klungkung, I Nyoman Suwirta. (kmb45)

Culture agency plands cultural event at Candra Bhuana art center

AMLAPURA — After being developed throughout 2016, the Candra Buana Art Center has finally been handed over by the project leader to the Karangasem culture agency. The handover however only includes maintenance – not as an asset, which means that the culture agency can use the profits from from prevosou projects. The Karangasem Culture Agency is currently designing cultural events to be held twice a month.

Head of the Karangasem Culture Agency, Putu Arnawa, said on Friday (Aug. 11) that the schedueld art events will allow art studios in Karangasem to perform regularly. This will also provide an opportunity for every village in Karangasem to show off its arts and culture. “This means that after the handover of maintenance, this Candra Buana Art Center can be utilized by the local government and we plan to hold cultural events twice a month”, said Arnawa.

These events are part of the culture agency’s ongoing efforts to show off what Karangasem has to offer in terms of performing arts. These events will also help to preserve rt and culture in Karanagasem and support the City of Karangasem status as a Heritage City.

The physical work of constructing the art center that started in 2016 will continue until 2019. Because the construction has yet to be completed, although the the maintenance of the buildings has been handed over, it is still under the responsibility of the provincial working unit.

Arnawa added that construction in 2018 and 2019 will include the planned construction of a palm- leaf manuscripts museum in the west of the art center and several supporting facilites. “This is a part of the heritage city program and there should be additional physical buildings as supporting facilities that indicate the heritage city. One of them is this palm-leaf manuscript museum and cultural event at this venue”, he said.

The arrangement of the heritage city project is centered at the Candra Buna Square, Amlapura. It is being worked on by the Ministry of Public Works and People’s Housing. The Candra Buana square is being totally transformed from a sport field into an art center. Karangasem is a A category heritage meaning it is one of the top 10 Best Heritage Cities in Indonesia. Given this status, the local government hopes to preserve the heritage asets of this city. (kmb31)

Beach clean up is regularly done to reduce the spread of plastic waste.

SEMARAPURA —Processing plastic waste into electricity is being tested by Klungkung’s district government. Processing has started in Gunaksa village, Dawan and will be followed by giving out information to public. If this breakthrough program is able to run optimally, it will be expanded to a larger scale.

Head of the Klungkung Environment and Land Agency, Anak Agung Kirana, explained on Sunday (Aug. 13) that problem of garbage in Klungkung has become quite worrying. One of the problems is a lack of public awareness regarding processing.

Garbage is thrown out hapharzardly with consideration for the natural environment. The district government in fact handles garbage regularly hauling it off to the Sente landfill in Gunaksa village where it is also sorted.

However, the 9,800 square meters area of the landfill has become overloaded in the last few years.

Every day, there are at least 20 garbage trucks dumping refuse there. “Actually, the landfill can

no longer accommodate any additional waste”, he said.

The district government has therefor been looking for a new way to process garbage – especially plastic. They now plan to process the plastic garbage into briquettes that can be used to produce electricity. This project is being done in cooperation with PT (Persero) PLN as is schedule to start in November. They plan to process one ton of waste into briquettes every day.

“Each ton of waste will be processed into 400 kilograms of briquettes, equivalent to 15 kilo watts of electricity”, he explained.

Land for the processing, continued Kirana, has already been provided by the village and so has the labor.

As for equipment, the experts that will guide the project for one year as well as other costs will be borne

by PT PLN. If the project works, it will be developed on a larger scale. They also have plans to treat plastic waste though cooperation with the district government and the companies that produce the discarded products. “We have a plastic trash hunting movement. Later on, it will be sorted out according to the product brand”, he said.

When asked about the overloaded landfill, Kirana explained that the local government plans to dispose of additional garbage at the district of Bangli’s regional landfill, however he added that this process is still being discussed. (kmb45)

Revention of cervical cancer by vaccination constrained by cost

SEMARAPURA — There is a fairly high demand amongst housewives in Klungkung for get vaccinated for cervical cancer.

However the cost of the vaccine is prohibitive for most. Chairperson of the Indonesian Cancer Cervical Foundation of Klungkung, Mrs. Ayu Suwirta, during an information session being held in the Praja Mandala Room of Klungkung regent’s office on Friday (Aug. 11), explained that the vaccine needs to be administered three times.

Although the cost for all three vaccines has gone down from IDR 4 million to just IDR 1.5 million this is still too expensive for many housewives. “Many housewives are interested in getting this vaccine, but the cost is still too high” she said.

Having the district government bear the cost of this vaccine is not possible as it would require too large of a budget. Her foundation she said cannot force them to pay for it, but can only appeal to them to do so. “We can only explain that

it is important and that the number of cancer patients increases every year” she added.

Along with information about cervical cancer, the information session also conveyed the importance children being vaccinated for dengue and Japanese Encephalitis (JE) disease. “The administering of the JE vaccination will be conducted around October and November”, said Division Head of Disease Prevention and Control at the Klungkung Health Agency, Wayan Jaya Putra. Scientists create safer pig organs with goal of transplants for humans

MASSACHUSETTS - Scientists at a Massachusetts company seeking to make pig organs safe enough to be transplanted into humans have used gene-editing technology to clone piglets that lack a potentially dangerous retrovirus, according to a study released on Thursday.

The breakthrough, according to authors of the study published in the journal Science, could help pave the way for transplantation of whole pig organs into humans, without fear of patients being infected with the pig retrovirus. But other hurdles remain.

Transplants from pigs could offer a new potentially life-saving alternative for patients diagnosed with organ failure and no other vi-

able treatment options. A shortage of available human organs has led scientists to study the possibility of animal donors to close the gap.

About 20 people die each day in the United States while awaiting an organ transplant, according to the United Network for Organ Sharing.

The latest experiment was conducted by scientists at the Cambridge, Massachusetts-based compa-

ny eGenesis. They used a technology known as CRISPR that works as a type of molecular scissors, trimming away unwanted parts of a genome.

The scientists created pig genes that lacked the problematic retrovirus, then used a cloning technique to produce pig embryos, according to a statement from eGenesis. The embryos were implanted into normal sows, and the mother pigs later

gave birth to the cloned piglets.

The clones, which were born without the retrovirus, will be monitored for long-term effects from the procedure.

“This research represents an important advance in addressing safety concerns about cross-species viral transmission,” Luhan Yang, co-founder and chief scientific officer at eGenesis, said in a statement.

Pigs have long been seen as a viable source for organ transplants to humans because their organs are similar in size.

Scientists have specifically studied the

potential for transplanting swine hearts, kidneys, livers and lungs.

Scientists in decades past experimented with transplanting chimpanzee organs into human patients but turned their focus to pig organs instead after finding them to be more suitable donor candidates.

One key remaining obstacle is how to produce pig organs that, once transplanted, will not produce an immunological rejection in human patients -- an issue also under study by eGenesis scientists, the company said. (rtr)

Chinese quantum satellite sends ‘unbreakable’ code

BEIJING - China has sent an “unbreakable” code from a satellite to the Earth, marking the first time spaceto-ground quantum key distribution technology has been realized, state media said on Thursday.

China launched the world’s first quantum satellite last August, to help establish “hack proof” communications, a development the Pentagon has called a “notable advance”.

The official Xinhua news agency said the latest experiment was published in the journal Nature on Thursday, where reviewers called it a “milestone”.

The satellite sent quantum keys to ground stations in China between 645 km (400 miles) and 1,200 km (745 miles) away at a transmission rate up to 20 orders of magnitude more efficient than an optical fiber, Xinhua cited Pan Jianwei, lead scientist on the experiment from the state-run Chinese Academy of Sciences, as saying.

“That, for instance, can meet the demand of making an absolute safe phone call or transmitting a large amount of bank data,” Pan said.

Any attempt to eavesdrop on the quantum channel would introduce

detectable disturbances to the system, Pan said.

“Once intercepted or measured, the quantum state of the key will change, and the information being intercepted will self-destruct,” Xinhua said.

The news agency said there were “enormous prospects” for applying this new generation of communications in defense and finance.

China still lags behind the United States and Russia in space technology, although President Xi Jinping has prioritized advancing its space program, citing national security and defense. (rtr)

“Water is one potential area that can be developed. In fact we plan to build a drinking water factory with a different concept and equipped with an education center so that the public can learn about the process of water treatment”, he explained.

Tommy Pratomo added that he hopes the project will be able to take place in cooperation with regional government-owned enterprises (BUMD).

With aim of exporting, this cooperation

is expected to provide mutual benefits for both parties leading to the improvement of the people’s economy.

Yualita Prabowo from Berjaya Karangasem Consulting Group said that the Singapore-based investor has successfully invested in several countries. In Indonesia, the district of Karangasem will serve as a pilot project. “Hopefully, this project can be realized and contribute to the regionally generated revenue (PAD) and the community of Karangasem”, she said. Korea tensions ease slightly as U.S. officials play down war risks

DENPASAR — A total of 300 hectares of paddy fields in the Province of Bali experienced crop failure in the 2016 harvest.

As a result farmers suffered great losses. The Bali agriculture agency is therefore intensifying their dissemination of information about paddy cultivation insurance (AUTP) and cattle business insurance (AUTS) given the high risk that climate change and pest attacks pose for farming businesses.

The Bali agriculture agency has insured farmlands thought Jasindo. Now, the land area of 300 hectares has received claim payments from Jasindo.

Total claims to Jasindo amounts to IDR 1.8 billion. “Before the presence of AUTP, farmers had to wait a long time to plant again”, said Head of the Bali Agriculture Agency, I.B. Wisnu Ardhana, on Friday (Aug. 11) during the AUTP and AUTS information session held at the local office.

SEMARAPURA — Palm sugar production in Dawan subdistrict is not only found at Dawan Kelod village but also at Besan Village. Despite the high quality of the palm sugar being produced in both these villages, they still face marketing challenges.

Headman of Besan, Made Suryata G. Puri, explained that people in his village do not just work as farmers, but that over the generations, married women have

taken to making palm sugar using a traditional process that yields a good quality product.

However, despite the high quality of Dawan sugar, the producers still have trouble getting their product to the markets that demand it. They usually sell their palm sugar to distributors for a low price and means that their income is quite erratic.

“Our products are mostly sold to collectors. We have

not been able to sell directly to market”, explained Besan’s headman.

Because of the erratic and often paltry income that the palm sugar producers make, many have switched to other professions that are considered more promising. Headman Puri added that he hopes that the government can help with marketing this product so that these businesses can develop . (kmb45)

Concern that North Korea is close to achieving its goal of putting the mainland United States within range of a nuclear weapon has underpinned a spike in tensions in recent months.

U.S. President Donald Trump warned at the weekend that the U.S. military was “locked and loaded” if North Korea acted unwisely after threatening last week to land missiles near the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam.

“There must be no more war on the Korean peninsula. Whatever ups and downs we face, the North Korean nuclear situation must be resolved peacefully,” South Korean President Moon Jae-in told a regular meeting with senior aides and advisers.

“I am certain the United States will respond to the current situation calmly and responsibly in a stance that is equal to ours,” he said.

While backing Trump’s tough talk, U.S. officials including National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster played down the risk on Sunday of the rhetoric escalating into conflict.

“I think we’re not closer to war than a week ago, but we are closer to war than we were a decade ago,” McMaster told ABC News’ “This Week”.

U.S. Central Intelligence Agency Director Mike Pompeo said North Korean leader Kim Jong Un might well conduct another missile test but talk of being on the cusp of a nuclear war was overstating the risk.

“I’ve seen no intelligence that

would indicate that we’re in that place today,” Pompeo told “Fox News Sunday”.

World stocks rallied on Monday as investors took heart from the less bellicose rhetoric.

However, North Korea reiterated its threats, with its official KCNA news agency saying “war cannot be blocked by any power if sparks fly due to a small, random incident that was unintentional”.

“Any second Korean War would have no choice but to spread into a nuclear war,” it said in a commentary on Monday.

MISSILE DOUBTS South Korean Vice Defence Minister Suh Choo-suk agreed North Korea was likely to continue provocations, including nuclear tests, but did not see a big risk of the North engaging in actual military conflict.

Suh again highlighted doubts about North Korea’s claims about its military capability.

“Both the United States and South Korea do not believe North Korea has yet completely gained re-entry technology in material engineering terms,” Suh said in remarks televised on Sunday for a Korea Broadcasting System show.

The United States and South Korea remain technically still at war with North Korea after the 1950-53 Korean conflict ended with a truce, not a peace treaty.

Robust China economic growth shows signs of fading in July

BEIJING - China’s strong economic growth showed visible signs of fading in July as lending costs rose and the gravity-defying property market cooled, though activity levels generally remained solid, propped up by a year-long construction spree. Industrial output, investment, retail sales and trade all grew less than expected last month, after the world’s second-largest economy put in a surprisingly strong showing in the first half, adding fuel to a global recovery. has been pouring money into road and rail projects that have fuelled demand for products from construction equipment to glass and steel.

HAS CHINA’S GROWTH PEAKED? China has surprised most pundits this year, with the economy growing a faster-than-expected 6.9 percent in

the first half, turbo-charged by heavy government spending, a hot housing market and record bank lending last year that has added to a rapid-buildup in debt. That momentum should ensure the government handily meets its full-year growth target of around 6.5 percent.

Analysts have insisted that cracks will appear eventually, leading to a modest slowdown, but have repeatedly pushed back the timing in the face of resilient data. A government crackdown on riskier types of lending has driven a slowdown in credit growth and pushed up financing costs, which are expected to weigh on businesses.

Along with the increase in both the quantity and quality of information technology there is an increased interest and curiosity amongst Balinese people themselves about things that have become part of daily life. People are not so easily satisfied with the answer “that’s just how it is” about the art, culture and other aspects of daily life for Balinese, like oblations, paraphanalia and the use of animals in rituals.

When discussing about the use of animals in the oblations (bebantenan), of course we will talk about the use of animal meat in the oblations. According to I Gede Agus Budi Adnyana, a humanist and lecturer at State Hindu Dharma Institute (IHDN) Denpasar, we cannot talk about bebantenan without mentioning the use of animal meat in oblations. Various Hindu rituals in Bali often use animal flesh as an offering that has an almost equal position to flowers in oblations. For example, peras oblation must contain grilled chicken otherwise they are not considered complete.

Adnyana said that it is stated in one of the slokas or couplets of the Rig Veda: “what is on the grilled meat, oil and the meat itself should not be thrown onto the grass, offer it to the gods”. This, he said, confirms that meat is one of the important means in the oblations. Besides, in the practice of Bhairava Tantra, flesh is one of the main offerings in ritual because it is also life-giver of the universe.

“In terms of the type of animals uses, Manawa Dharmasastra states that livestock such as chickens, ducks or pigs are used in accordance with the rituals or local traditions of different areas”, said Adnyana.

He added that offering in the form of meat as stated in the Rig Veda become the most important and the most classical rituals. In addition, there are also animals like cows and buffalos that tend to be used in the Ngusaba or Mamungkah rituals.

The animal is skinned, and the skin and the head are used as titi mamah or as a foundation for the arrival of deities as inspired by the story of the legendary demon Mahisasura who was eradicated by Goddess Durga. Moreover, in the ceremony of Bhatara Turun Kabeh, the titi mamah like this is also used as a foothold before the deity’s effigy it brought up to the peselang pavilion.

Other rituals also involve animal sacrifice or caru oblations with chicken serving as the basis of caru. According to Ida Bagus Alit, senior figure of Griya Anyar Manuaba, Baha, the type of meat is adjusted to the direction. However, he added that implementation of certain caru ritual such as Caru Wrehaspati Kalpa in the grandiose ritual will usually use other animals such as goats.

Then, other animals are used for each direction like celeng butuan (male piglet) for north point, black-winged goose for the west and white swan for the east and then dog for the south according to the instructions of Ida Pedanda.

Manusha yadnya activities like babayuhan (exorcism rites) also use chicken. In the case of an inauspicious birth where the pawukon-based birthday (otonan) coincides with full moon, a redemption by bebayuhan must be performed using a white chicken dedicated to Shiva Raditya but if the birth coiicides with the new moon a black chicken is used and is to be offered to the Goddess Ratih.

“Chickens in the bebayuhan ritual will be roasted or steamed because after the ritual the chicken meat will be enjoyed by the person for whom the exorcism rite is conducted”, he explained. (kmb)

Yemen records 500,000 cholera cases, nearly 2,000 deaths - WHO

GENEVA - More than half a million people in Yemen have been infected with cholera since the epidemic began four months ago and 1,975 people have died, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Monday.

Each day there are more than 5,000 new cases of the waterborne disease, which causes acute diarrhoea and dehydration, in the country where the health system has collapsed after more than two years of war, it said.

“The total number of suspected cholera cases in Yemen this year hit the half a million mark on Sunday, and nearly 2,000 people have died since the outbreak began to spread rapidly at the end of April,” the WHO said in a statement on Monday.

“The spread of cholera has slowed significantly in some areas compared to peak levels but the disease is still spreading fast in more recently affected districts, which are recording large numbers of cases,” it said, reporting a total of 503,484 cases.

The disease, spread by ingestion of food or water tainted with human faeces, can kill within hours if untreated. It has been largely eradicated in developed countries equipped with sanitation systems and water treatment.

But Yemen’s devastating civil war, pitting a Saudi-led military coalition against the Iran-backed armed Houthi group, and economic collapse has made it extremely difficult to deal with catastrophes such as cholera and mass hunger.

Millions of Yemenis remain cut off from clean water and waste collection has ceased in major cities, the WHO added.

Yemen’s 30,000 critical health workers have not been paid salaries in nearly a year and critical medicines are lacking, the WHO said.

“These doctors and nurses are the backbone of the health response – without them we can do nothing in Yemen. They must be paid their wages so that they can continue to save lives,” said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General.

WHO and partners are working around the clock to set up cholera treatment clinics, rehabilitate health facilities, deliver medical supplies and support the national effort, the United Nations agency said.

More than 99 percent of patients who reach health facilities survive but children and the elderly are most vulnerable.

“The response is working in some places. We can tell you that surveillance confirms a decline in suspected cases over the past four weeks in some of the most affected governorates,” WHO spokeswoman Fadela Chaib told a news briefing last Friday.

“Most notably Sanaa city, Hajja and Amran are consistent with his decline. But in many other districts, cases and deaths persist and are on the rise.” (rtr)

Indonesian tile workers’ toned torsos on display for national day JATIWANGI - More than 70 roof tile factory workers in Indonesia participated in a bodybuilding contest on the island of Java to mark Independence Day on Thursday.

The men slapped oil on their bodies before strutting down a runway, flexing their muscles to music and cheers from other residents of Jatiwangi, a village about 200 km (124 miles) east of the capital, Jakarta.

The highlight of the competition, which was judged by last year ’s winner and a panel of women, featured the contestants picking up as many roof tiles as they could carry. The men developed their muscles through the demands of their profession making, lifting and stacking roof tiles in the village, renowned in Indonesia for its tile products.

Suspected Islamist militants kill 18 in attack on Burkina Faso restaurant

“This is a terrorist attack,” Communications Minister Remi Dandjinou told a news conference on Monday.

JAKARTA - Indonesian police on Friday arrested an alleged recruiter and fundraiser for pro-Islamic State (IS) militants locked in a bloody battle for control of the southern Philippine city of Marawi.

Nearly 700 people, 120 soldiers among them, have been killed in the conflict after an alliance of militant groups launched an audacious assault to capture the Philippine city on May 23. Philippine military and police have yet to regain control of all of Marawi, a city of about 200,000 people, amid ferocious urban fighting that has destroyed most of its centre.

The man detained at a residential complex on the outskirts of Jakarta is believed to be a member of Jemaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), an Indonesian radical group that has pledged allegiance to IS, police spokesman Inspector General Setyo Wasisto said.

“He finds people to send to Marawi and Syria,” Wasisto said in a text message to Reuters. “How many is still unclear.” Police also suspect he raised funds for recruitment.

Indonesian counter-terrorism authorities believe at least 20 Indonesians were

among the fighters, along with some from Malaysia and the Middle East, who flocked to Marawi, on the island of Mindanao, long afflicted by Islamist insurgencies.

Indonesian JAD members make up most of the senior leadership of the Southeast Asian military unit fighting for IS in Syria known as Katibah Nusantara. Two of the leaders, Bahrumsyah and Bahrun Naim, have directed and inspired a series of militant attacks in Indonesia, Indonesian police say.

Members of Katibah Nusantara have also organised funding and international recruits for the Marawi assault, the Jakarta-based Institute of Policy Analysis of Conflict said in a report.

Southeast Asian nations have vowed to step up law enforcement and intelligence cooperation to fight the rising threat of violent Islamist extremism in the wake of the Marawi siege.

Fuelling concern is the possible return to Southeast Asia of hundreds of hardened IS fighters from the Middle East as its self-styled caliphate collapses.(rtr)

JAKARTA- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has encouraged members of the Scout Movement (Pramuka) to not only train to tie knots but to also create a breakthrough.

“The Scout Movement must make a breakthrough. Do not think linear; do not get trapped in monotonous routines,” the president stated during the opening of the 11th National Raimuna as part of the 56th Pramuka Day celebrations at the Cibubur Camp Ground, East Jakarta, on Monday.

According to Jokowi, the current generation of scouts comprises millennials, or Generation Y, that think differently as compared to the previous ones. It is an innovative and creative generation that is adaptive to technological advancements, Jokowi pointed out.

Hence, he urged the scout guides to always educate the younger generation of scout members not only in terms of marching line, building tents, or tying knots but also in other areas.

“They have to guide our young pramuka to be disciplined while using social media for positive and productive purposes,” Jokowi noted.

The Pramuka should use creative and contemporary ways that are closer to the millennial generation to instill a sense of pride and devotion towards their country.

To this end, every old approach that is no longer fit for the young generation must be abandoned.

This years National Raimuna is attended by 15 thousand members of “pramuka” in the age group of 16 and 25 years from 34 provinces of Indonesia and some representatives from friendly countries.

Former president Megawati Soekarnoputri, Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi, Education and Culture Minister Muhadjir Effendi, Communications and Information Minister Rudiantara, and Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung were also present during the opening of the scout gathering event.(ant)

Bolt vows “never again” after emotional London farewell

LONDON - Usain Bolt took an emotional final bow on the track at the end of the World Championships in London on Sunday before declaring that, definitely and definitively, there was no way he would ever return to sprinting.

After embarking on a special lap of honour so slow that you could not believe that we were saying farewell to the world’s fastest man, Bolt was asked by reporters already missing him whether he might ever change his mind.

Already he was looking forward to an exciting future, he said, with his management camp talking to IAAF President Sebastian Coe, about what he might be able to do for the sport in an ambassadorial capacity.

MONTREAL - German fourth seed Alexander Zverev upset Roger Federer 6-3 6-4 in the Rogers Cup final in Montreal on Sunday to join the Swiss righthander as the most trophy-laden player on the ATP Tour this year with five titles.

The 20-year-old German, who arrived in Montreal fresh from his triumph in Washington, proved up for the task right out of the gate as he had the Swiss second seed on his heels from the start on a sunny afternoon.

Zverev was poised and aggressive off the ground to create space for his power game and displayed some short-angled winners off thumping forehands and backhands to grab an early break for a 3-1 lead. He consolidated for a 4-1 cushion and ultimately closed

out the opening set after a mere 30 minutes.

Federer, who entered the match 5-0 in finals this year, started to find his groove early in the second set but suddenly appeared out of sorts while Zverev broke in the seventh game to pull ahead 4-3 and held on for a surprise win that took 68 minutes.

The victory over the 19-times grand slam champion was the second ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title of the season for Zverev, who also beat Novak Djokovic in Rome.

“This one against Roger is something so special for me because he was always a great idol growing up for me,” Zverev said during his trophy presentation.

“The greatest player of all time, beating him in a final, not just any

final but in the final of a Masters 1000, is amazing.”

The win improved Zverev to 5-1 in finals this year with the only defeat coming at the hands of Federer at Halle.

Federer spent six months on the sidelines in the second half of last season but has returned to his very best this year by winning five titles, including a pair of grand slams at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

He seemed ready to shift momentum early in the second set when he earned a trio of break points but Zverev saved them all in dominant fashion to hold for 1-1.

Son’s Spurs run-out boosts South Korea’s World Cup hopes

MANCHESTER - Romelu Lukaku struck twice on his Premier League debut for Manchester United as Jose Mourinho’s side made an emphatic start to their campaign with a 4-0 win over West Ham United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The Belgian striker, who was signed from Everton in a 75-million-pound ($97.58-million) move last month, began repaying that investment with two fine finishes but it was not only his imposing presence in attack that give United a very different feel from last season.

Another close-season recruit, Serbian midfielder Nemanja Matic, brought from Chelsea, made an excellent debut in the defensive midfield role, breaking up any threats from West Ham and then prompting United’s attacks with intelligence.

With Marcus Rashford’s pace and directness down the left flank and Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s trickery on the right, United showed a variety and inventiveness that too often was missing last season when they drew 10 home games.

While the United manager has too much experience and sense to get carried away with an opening-day win, he acknowledged his side had delivered a quality performance.

The performance and the levels of confidence is what means a lot to me. We lost two points against them last season and had similar games where we were dominated. Today we got the three points,” he said.

Lukaku opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, blasting in off the post after latching on to a clever through ball from Rashford, who had run with the ball from deep in his own half.

SEOUL - South Korea’s hopes of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup have received a huge boost after talismanic forward Son Heung-min made a surprise appearance for English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Son broke his right forearm on international duty in June and had been expected to miss about three months of action, poten-

tially ruling him out of the Koreans’ last two qualifiers against Iran on Aug. 31 and Uzbekistan five days later.

However, with the dynamic wide man coming off the bench in Spurs’ 2-0 win over Newcastle United, South Korea coach Shin Tae-yong was hopeful Son would be fighting fit for the upcoming Asian qualifiers.

“He looked a lot better than

Bolt vows “never again” after emotional London farewell

LONDON - Usain Bolt took an emotional final bow on the track at the end of the World Championships in London on Sunday before declaring that, definitely and definitively, there was no way he would ever return to sprinting.

MONTREAL - German fourth seed Alexander Zverev upset Roger Federer 6-3 6-4 in the Rogers Cup final in Montreal on Sunday to join the Swiss righthander as the most trophy-laden player on the ATP Tour this year with five titles.

The 20-year-old German, who arrived in Montreal fresh from his triumph in Washington, proved up for the task right out of the gate as he had the Swiss second seed on his heels from the start on a sunny afternoon.

Zverev was poised and aggressive off the ground to create space for his power game and displayed some short-angled winners off thumping forehands and backhands to grab an early break for a 3-1 lead. He consolidated for a 4-1 cushion and ultimately closed

out the opening set after a mere 30 minutes.

Federer, who entered the match 5-0 in finals this year, started to find his groove early in the second set but suddenly appeared out of sorts while Zverev broke in the seventh game to pull ahead 4-3 and held on for a surprise win that took 68 minutes.

The victory over the 19-times grand slam champion was the second ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title of the season for Zverev, who also beat Novak Djokovic in Rome.

“This one against Roger is something so special for me because he was always a great idol growing up for me,” Zverev said during his trophy presentation.

“The greatest player of all time, beating him in a final, not just any

final but in the final of a Masters 1000, is amazing.”

The win improved Zverev to 5-1 in finals this year with the only defeat coming at the hands of Federer at Halle.

Federer spent six months on the sidelines in the second half of last season but has returned to his very best this year by winning five titles, including a pair of grand slams at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

He seemed ready to shift momentum early in the second set when he earned a trio of break points but Zverev saved them all in dominant fashion to hold for 1-1.

Yemen records 500,000 cholera cases, nearly 2,000 deaths - WHO

GENEVA - More than half a million people in Yemen have been infected with cholera since the epidemic began four months ago and 1,975 people have died, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Monday.

Each day there are more than 5,000 new cases of the waterborne disease, which causes acute diarrhoea and dehydration, in the country where the health system has collapsed after more than two years of war, it said.

“The total number of suspected cholera cases in Yemen this year hit the half a million mark on Sunday, and nearly 2,000 people have died since the outbreak began to spread rapidly at the end of April,” the WHO said in a statement on Monday.

“The spread of cholera has slowed significantly in some areas compared to peak levels but the disease is still spreading fast in more recently affected districts, which are recording large numbers of cases,” it said, reporting a total of 503,484 cases.

The disease, spread by ingestion of food or water tainted with human faeces, can kill within hours if untreated. It has been largely eradicated in developed countries equipped with sanitation systems and water treatment.

But Yemen’s devastating civil war, pitting a Saudi-led military coalition against the Iran-backed armed Houthi group, and economic collapse has made it extremely difficult to deal with catastrophes such as cholera and mass hunger.

Millions of Yemenis remain cut off from clean water and waste collection has ceased in major cities, the WHO added.

Yemen’s 30,000 critical health workers have not been paid salaries in nearly a year and critical medicines are lacking, the WHO said.

“These doctors and nurses are the backbone of the health response – without them we can do nothing in Yemen. They must be paid their wages so that they can continue to save lives,” said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General.

WHO and partners are working around the clock to set up cholera treatment clinics, rehabilitate health facilities, deliver medical supplies and support the national effort, the United Nations agency said.

More than 99 percent of patients who reach health facilities survive but children and the elderly are most vulnerable.

“The response is working in some places. We can tell you that surveillance confirms a decline in suspected cases over the past four weeks in some of the most affected governorates,” WHO spokeswoman Fadela Chaib told a news briefing last Friday.

“Most notably Sanaa city, Hajja and Amran are consistent with his decline. But in many other districts, cases and deaths persist and are on the rise.” (rtr)

Indonesian tile workers’ toned torsos on display for national day JATIWANGI - More than 70 roof tile factory workers in Indonesia participated in a bodybuilding contest on the island of Java to mark Independence Day on Thursday.

The men slapped oil on their bodies before strutting down a runway, flexing their muscles to music and cheers from other residents of Jatiwangi, a village about 200 km (124 miles) east of the capital, Jakarta.

The highlight of the competition, which was judged by last year ’s winner and a panel of women, featured the contestants picking up as many roof tiles as they could carry. The men developed their muscles through the demands of their profession making, lifting and stacking roof tiles in the village, renowned in Indonesia for its tile products.

Indonesia arrests alleged Jokowi encourages Scout recruiter for Marawi siege Movement to create breakthrough

JAKARTA - Indonesian police on Friday arrested an alleged recruiter and fundraiser for pro-Islamic State (IS) militants locked in a bloody battle for control of the southern Philippine city of Marawi.

Nearly 700 people, 120 soldiers among them, have been killed in the conflict after an alliance of militant groups launched an audacious assault to capture the Philippine city on May 23. Philippine military and police have yet to regain control of all of Marawi, a city of about 200,000 people, amid ferocious urban fighting that has destroyed most of its centre.

The man detained at a residential complex on the outskirts of Jakarta is believed to be a member of Jemaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), an Indonesian radical group that has pledged allegiance to IS, police spokesman Inspector General Setyo Wasisto said.

“He finds people to send to Marawi and Syria,” Wasisto said in a text message to Reuters. “How many is still unclear.” Police also suspect he raised funds for recruitment.

Indonesian counter-terrorism authorities believe at least 20 Indonesians were

among the fighters, along with some from Malaysia and the Middle East, who flocked to Marawi, on the island of Mindanao, long afflicted by Islamist insurgencies.

Indonesian JAD members make up most of the senior leadership of the Southeast Asian military unit fighting for IS in Syria known as Katibah Nusantara. Two of the leaders, Bahrumsyah and Bahrun Naim, have directed and inspired a series of militant attacks in Indonesia, Indonesian police say.

Members of Katibah Nusantara have also organised funding and international recruits for the Marawi assault, the Jakarta-based Institute of Policy Analysis of Conflict said in a report.

Southeast Asian nations have vowed to step up law enforcement and intelligence cooperation to fight the rising threat of violent Islamist extremism in the wake of the Marawi siege.

“The Scout Movement must make a breakthrough. Do not think linear; do not get trapped in monotonous routines,” the president stated during the opening of the 11th National Raimuna as part of the 56th Pramuka Day celebrations at the Cibubur Camp Ground, East Jakarta, on Monday.

According to Jokowi, the current generation of scouts comprises millennials, or Generation Y, that think differently as compared to the previous ones. It is an innovative and creative generation that is adaptive to technological advancements, Jokowi pointed out.

Hence, he urged the scout guides to always educate the younger generation of scout members not only in terms of marching line, building tents, or tying knots but also in other areas.

“They have to guide our young pramuka to be disciplined while using social media for positive and productive purposes,” Jokowi noted.

The Pramuka should use creative and contemporary ways that are closer to the millennial generation to instill a sense of pride and devotion towards their country.

To this end, every old approach that is no longer fit for the young generation must be abandoned.

This years National Raimuna is attended by 15 thousand members of “pramuka” in the age group of 16 and 25 years from 34 provinces of Indonesia and some representatives from friendly countries.

Robust China economic growth shows signs of fading in July

BEIJING - China’s strong economic growth showed visible signs of fading in July as lending costs rose and the gravity-defying property market cooled, though activity levels generally remained solid, propped up by a year-long construction spree. Industrial output, investment, retail sales and trade all grew less than expected last month, after the world’s second-largest economy put in a surprisingly strong showing in the first half, adding fuel to a global recovery. has been pouring money into road and rail projects that have fuelled demand for products from construction equipment to glass and steel.

Indeed, China’s steel output rose to a monthly record in July, while power generation was the highest since at least May 2014.

Over time and under different conditions there are changes that occur in all societies – including Bali. Along with the increase in both the quantity and quality of information technology there is an increased interest and curiosity amongst Balinese people themselves about things that have become part of daily life. People are not so easily satisfied with the answer “that’s just how it is” about the art, culture and other aspects of daily life for Balinese, like oblations, paraphanalia and the use of animals in rituals.

When discussing about the use of animals in the oblations (bebantenan), of course we will talk about the use of animal meat in the oblations. According to I Gede Agus Budi Adnyana, a humanist and lecturer at State Hindu Dharma Institute (IHDN) Denpasar, we cannot talk about bebantenan without mentioning the use of animal meat in oblations. Various Hindu rituals in Bali often use animal flesh as an offering that has an almost equal position to flowers in oblations. For example, peras oblation must contain grilled chicken otherwise they are not considered complete.

Adnyana said that it is stated in one of the slokas or couplets of the Rig Veda: “what is on the grilled meat, oil and the meat itself should not be thrown onto the grass, offer it to the gods”. This, he said, confirms that meat is one of the important means in the oblations. Besides, in the practice of Bhairava Tantra, flesh is one of the main offerings in ritual because it is also life-giver of the universe.

“In terms of the type of animals uses, Manawa Dharmasastra states that livestock such as chickens, ducks or pigs are used in accordance with the rituals or local traditions of different areas”, said Adnyana.

He added that offering in the form of meat as stated in the Rig Veda become the most important and the most classical rituals. In addition, there are also animals like cows and buffalos that tend to be used in the Ngusaba or Mamungkah rituals.

The animal is skinned, and the skin and the head are used as titi mamah or as a foundation for the arrival of deities as inspired by the story of the legendary demon Mahisasura who was eradicated by Goddess Durga. Moreover, in the ceremony of Bhatara Turun Kabeh, the titi mamah like this is also used as a foothold before the deity’s effigy it brought up to the peselang pavilion.

Other rituals also involve animal sacrifice or caru oblations with chicken serving as the basis of caru. According to Ida Bagus Alit, senior figure of Griya Anyar Manuaba, Baha, the type of meat is adjusted to the direction. However, he added that implementation of certain caru ritual such as Caru Wrehaspati Kalpa in the grandiose ritual will usually use other animals such as goats.

Then, other animals are used for each direction like celeng butuan (male piglet) for north point, black-winged goose for the west and white swan for the east and then dog for the south according to the instructions of Ida Pedanda.

Manusha yadnya activities like babayuhan (exorcism rites) also use chicken. In the case of an inauspicious birth where the pawukon-based birthday (otonan) coincides with full moon, a redemption by bebayuhan must be performed using a white chicken dedicated to Shiva Raditya but if the birth coiicides with the new moon a black chicken is used and is to be offered to the Goddess Ratih.

“Chickens in the bebayuhan ritual will be roasted or steamed because after the ritual the chicken meat will be enjoyed by the person for whom the exorcism rite is conducted”, he explained. (kmb)

300 hectares of paddy field face crop failure such claims, farmers are expected to have enough capital to buy fertilizer and seeds.

Since its launch in 2016, the AUTP has covered 21,000 hectares of paddy fields across Bali. The area of land covered by insurance is still small when compared to the total area of ??paddy fields in Bali which amount to about 80,000 hectares.

“Of the 80,000 hectares of land, we only insure the planting season during the dry season. During rainy season, there should be no problem with water shortages or drought”, he said.

“Based on CCTV footage, police personnel discovered that the perpetrator had taken the watch and put it in her black sling bag”, said the source.

Korea tensions ease slightly as U.S. officials play down war risks

DENPASAR — A total of 300 hectares of paddy fields in the Province of Bali experienced crop failure in the 2016 harvest.

As a result farmers suffered great losses. The Bali agriculture agency is therefore intensifying their dissemination of information about paddy cultivation insurance (AUTP) and cattle business insurance (AUTS) given the high risk that climate change and pest attacks pose for farming businesses.

The Bali agriculture agency has insured farmlands thought Jasindo. Now, the land area of 300 hectares has received claim payments from Jasindo.

Total claims to Jasindo amounts to IDR 1.8 billion. “Before the presence of AUTP, farmers had to wait a long time to plant again”, said Head of the Bali Agriculture Agency, I.B. Wisnu Ardhana, on Friday (Aug. 11) during the AUTP and AUTS information session held at the local office.

Until now, 80 percent of the AUTP premiums amounting to IDR 180,000 have been paid by the government, while farmers only need to pay IDR 36,000 per hectare per planting season.

SEMARAPURA — Palm sugar production in Dawan subdistrict is not only found at Dawan Kelod village but also at Besan Village. Despite the high quality of the palm sugar being produced in both these villages, they still face marketing challenges.

Headman of Besan, Made Suryata G. Puri, explained that people in his village do not just work as farmers, but that over the generations, married women have

taken to making palm sugar using a traditional process that yields a good quality product.

However, despite the high quality of Dawan sugar, the producers still have trouble getting their product to the markets that demand it. They usually sell their palm sugar to distributors for a low price and means that their income is quite erratic.

“Our products are mostly sold to collectors. We have

not been able to sell directly to market”, explained Besan’s headman.

Because of the erratic and often paltry income that the palm sugar producers make, many have switched to other professions that are considered more promising. Headman Puri added that he hopes that the government can help with marketing this product so that these businesses can develop . (kmb45)

Concern that North Korea is close to achieving its goal of putting the mainland United States within range of a nuclear weapon has underpinned a spike in tensions in recent months.

U.S. President Donald Trump warned at the weekend that the U.S. military was “locked and loaded” if North Korea acted unwisely after threatening last week to land missiles near the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam.

“There must be no more war on the Korean peninsula. Whatever ups and downs we face, the North Korean nuclear situation must be resolved peacefully,” South Korean President Moon Jae-in told a regular meeting with senior aides and advisers.

“I am certain the United States will respond to the current situation calmly and responsibly in a stance that is equal to ours,” he said.

While backing Trump’s tough talk, U.S. officials including National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster played down the risk on Sunday of the rhetoric escalating into conflict.

“I think we’re not closer to war than a week ago, but we are closer to war than we were a decade ago,” McMaster told ABC News’ “This Week”.

U.S. Central Intelligence Agency Director Mike Pompeo said North Korean leader Kim Jong Un might well conduct another missile test but talk of being on the cusp of a nuclear war was overstating the risk.

“I’ve seen no intelligence that

would indicate that we’re in that place today,” Pompeo told “Fox News Sunday”.

World stocks rallied on Monday as investors took heart from the less bellicose rhetoric.

However, North Korea reiterated its threats, with its official KCNA news agency saying “war cannot be blocked by any power if sparks fly due to a small, random incident that was unintentional”.

“Any second Korean War would have no choice but to spread into a nuclear war,” it said in a commentary on Monday.

MISSILE DOUBTS South Korean Vice Defence Minister Suh Choo-suk agreed North Korea was likely to continue provocations, including nuclear tests, but did not see a big risk of the North engaging in actual military conflict.

Suh again highlighted doubts about North Korea’s claims about its military capability.

“Both the United States and South Korea do not believe North Korea has yet completely gained re-entry technology in material engineering terms,” Suh said in remarks televised on Sunday for a Korea Broadcasting System show.

The United States and South Korea remain technically still at war with North Korea after the 1950-53 Korean conflict ended with a truce, not a peace treaty.

the resignation of two senators in recent weeks.

Joyce said he was informed

by New Zealand officials last week that he may be a citizen by descent.

Joyce was born in Australia.

His mother was Australian and his father was born in New Zealand and came to Australia in

1947 as a British subject.

“Neither I nor my parents have ever had any reason to believe that I may be a citizen of any other country,” he said on Monday.

Revention of cervical cancer by vaccination constrained by cost

SEMARAPURA — There is a fairly high demand amongst housewives in Klungkung for get vaccinated for cervical cancer.

However the cost of the vaccine is prohibitive for most. Chairperson of the Indonesian Cancer Cervical Foundation of Klungkung, Mrs. Ayu Suwirta, during an information session being held in the Praja Mandala Room of Klungkung regent’s office on Friday (Aug. 11), explained that the vaccine needs to be administered three times.

Although the cost for all three vaccines has gone down from IDR 4 million to just IDR 1.5 million this is still too expensive for many housewives. “Many housewives are interested in getting this vaccine, but the cost is still too high” she said.

Having the district government bear the cost of this vaccine is not possible as it would require too large of a budget. Her foundation she said cannot force them to pay for it, but can only appeal to them to do so. “We can only explain that

it is important and that the number of cancer patients increases every year” she added.

Along with information about cervical cancer, the information session also conveyed the importance children being vaccinated for dengue and Japanese Encephalitis (JE) disease. “The administering of the JE vaccination will be conducted around October and November”, said Division Head of Disease Prevention and Control at the Klungkung Health Agency, Wayan Jaya Putra. Scientists create safer pig organs with goal of transplants for humans

MASSACHUSETTS - Scientists at a Massachusetts company seeking to make pig organs safe enough to be transplanted into humans have used gene-editing technology to clone piglets that lack a potentially dangerous retrovirus, according to a study released on Thursday.

The breakthrough, according to authors of the study published in the journal Science, could help pave the way for transplantation of whole pig organs into humans, without fear of patients being infected with the pig retrovirus. But other hurdles remain.

Transplants from pigs could offer a new potentially life-saving alternative for patients diagnosed with organ failure and no other vi-

able treatment options. A shortage of available human organs has led scientists to study the possibility of animal donors to close the gap.

About 20 people die each day in the United States while awaiting an organ transplant, according to the United Network for Organ Sharing.

The latest experiment was conducted by scientists at the Cambridge, Massachusetts-based compa-

ny eGenesis. They used a technology known as CRISPR that works as a type of molecular scissors, trimming away unwanted parts of a genome.

The scientists created pig genes that lacked the problematic retrovirus, then used a cloning technique to produce pig embryos, according to a statement from eGenesis. The embryos were implanted into normal sows, and the mother pigs later

gave birth to the cloned piglets.

The clones, which were born without the retrovirus, will be monitored for long-term effects from the procedure.

“This research represents an important advance in addressing safety concerns about cross-species viral transmission,” Luhan Yang, co-founder and chief scientific officer at eGenesis, said in a statement.

Pigs have long been seen as a viable source for organ transplants to humans because their organs are similar in size.

Scientists have specifically studied the

potential for transplanting swine hearts, kidneys, livers and lungs.

Scientists in decades past experimented with transplanting chimpanzee organs into human patients but turned their focus to pig organs instead after finding them to be more suitable donor candidates.

One key remaining obstacle is how to produce pig organs that, once transplanted, will not produce an immunological rejection in human patients -- an issue also under study by eGenesis scientists, the company said. (rtr)

Chinese quantum satellite sends ‘unbreakable’ code

BEIJING - China has sent an “unbreakable” code from a satellite to the Earth, marking the first time spaceto-ground quantum key distribution technology has been realized, state media said on Thursday.

China launched the world’s first quantum satellite last August, to help establish “hack proof” communications, a development the Pentagon has called a “notable advance”.

The official Xinhua news agency said the latest experiment was published in the journal Nature on Thursday, where reviewers called it a “milestone”.

The satellite sent quantum keys to ground stations in China between 645 km (400 miles) and 1,200 km (745 miles) away at a transmission rate up to 20 orders of magnitude more efficient than an optical fiber, Xinhua cited Pan Jianwei, lead scientist on the experiment from the state-run Chinese Academy of Sciences, as saying.

“That, for instance, can meet the demand of making an absolute safe phone call or transmitting a large amount of bank data,” Pan said.

Any attempt to eavesdrop on the quantum channel would introduce

detectable disturbances to the system, Pan said.

“Once intercepted or measured, the quantum state of the key will change, and the information being intercepted will self-destruct,” Xinhua said.

The news agency said there were “enormous prospects” for applying this new generation of communications in defense and finance.

China still lags behind the United States and Russia in space technology, although President Xi Jinping has prioritized advancing its space program, citing national security and defense. (rtr)

Plastic waste processed Jumpai tourism development to produce electricity hampered by spatial plan SEMARAPURA — Jumpa Village in the subdistrict of Klungkung has a lot of potential for developing tourism – especially along the coast. The local community hopes that it can be developed and become known to more people. However such plans cannot be realized because according to the regional spatial planning (RTRW) this area is zoned industrial.

Headman of Jumpai, Wayan Sudiarna, revealed that over the last few years, quite a lot of foreign tourists have been coming to this beach to surf and enjoy the seaside. The local community therefor hopes to develop this area as a tourist destination. Arrangements for supporting facilities for surfing have not however been able to be implemented.

“For a long time, local people have been very hopeful about developing this surfing spot. But because this area has been included in the industrial zone as set forth in the spatial plan (RTRW), this dream reamains constrained”, he said on Sunday (Aug. 13).

To overcome this issue, Sudiarna has submitted a request for a review of the status of this region from the regional development planning board (Bappeda) of Klungkung. He expects to get an answer soon. “The request has been submitted. We hope this can become a tourist area” he said.

Although the spatial plan issue has yet to be resolved, promotion of this coastal area has already taken place by organizing events like the Jumpai Surfing Club initiated by Çanthi Wacana Samanjaya customary youth club of Jumpai village. “Today (Sunday—Ed) there is a surfing event. Culture agency plands cultural event at Candra Bhuana art center

AMLAPURA — After being developed throughout 2016, the Candra Buana Art Center has finally been handed over by the project leader to the Karangasem culture agency. The handover however only includes maintenance – not as an asset, which means that the culture agency can use the profits from from prevosou projects. The Karangasem Culture Agency is currently designing cultural events to be held twice a month.

Head of the Karangasem Culture Agency, Putu Arnawa, said on Friday (Aug. 11) that the schedueld art events will allow art studios in Karangasem to perform regularly. This will also provide an opportunity for every village in Karangasem to show off its arts and culture. “This means that after the handover of maintenance, this Candra Buana Art Center can be utilized by the local government and we plan to hold cultural events twice a month”, said Arnawa.

These events are part of the culture agency’s ongoing efforts to show off what Karangasem has to offer in terms of performing arts. These events will also help to preserve rt and culture in Karanagasem and support the City of Karangasem status as a Heritage City.

The physical work of constructing the art center that started in 2016 will continue until 2019. Because the construction has yet to be completed, although the the maintenance of the buildings has been handed over, it is still under the responsibility of the provincial working unit.

Arnawa added that construction in 2018 and 2019 will include the planned construction of a palm- leaf manuscripts museum in the west of the art center and several supporting facilites. “This is a part of the heritage city program and there should be additional physical buildings as supporting facilities that indicate the heritage city. The arrangement of the heritage city project is centered at the Candra Buna Square, Amlapura. It is being worked on by the Ministry of Public Works and People’s Housing. The Candra Buana square is being totally transformed from a sport field into an art center. Karangasem is a A category heritage meaning it is one of the top 10 Best Heritage Cities in Indonesia. Beach clean up is regularly done to reduce the spread of plastic waste.

SEMARAPURA —Processing plastic waste into electricity is being tested by Klungkung’s district government. Processing has started in Gunaksa village, Dawan and will be followed by giving out information to public. If this breakthrough program is able to run optimally, it will be expanded to a larger scale.

Head of the Klungkung Environment and Land Agency, Anak Agung Kirana, explained on Sunday (Aug. 13) that problem of garbage in Klungkung has become quite worrying. One of the problems is a lack of public awareness regarding processing.

Garbage is thrown out hapharzardly with consideration for the natural environment. The district government in fact handles garbage regularly hauling it off to the Sente landfill in Gunaksa village where it is also sorted.

However, the 9,800 square meters area of the landfill has become overloaded in the last few years.

Every day, there are at least 20 garbage trucks dumping refuse there. “Actually, the landfill can

no longer accommodate any additional waste”, he said.

The district government has therefor been looking for a new way to process garbage – especially plastic. They now plan to process the plastic garbage into briquettes that can be used to produce electricity. This project is being done in cooperation with PT (Persero) PLN as is schedule to start in November. They plan to process one ton of waste into briquettes every day.

“Each ton of waste will be processed into 400 kilograms of briquettes, equivalent to 15 kilo watts of electricity”, he explained.

Land for the processing, continued Kirana, has already been provided by the village and so has the labor.

As for equipment, the experts that will guide the project for one year as well as other costs will be borne

by PT PLN. If the project works, it will be developed on a larger scale. They also have plans to treat plastic waste though cooperation with the district government and the companies that produce the discarded products. “We have a plastic trash hunting movement. Later on, it will be sorted out according to the product brand”, he said.

When asked about the overloaded landfill, Kirana explained that the local government plans to dispose of additional garbage at the district of Bangli’s regional landfill, however he added that this process is still being discussed. (kmb45)

LOS ANGELES - “Annabelle: Creation” may not be able to save the summer -- which, after this weekend, will only fall farther behind last year’s pace -- but it is doing its part to frighten audiences into theaters.

The latest from New Line and Warner Bros, which serves as the fourth installment in what has become the “Conjuring” extended universe, is casting its evil eye on $35 million from 3,502 locations. That’s a strong start for the horror flick, which was made for about $15 million.

The track record for the franchise is strong -- “Annabelle” ($37.1 million); “The Conjuring” ($41.9 million); and “The Conjuring 2” ($40.4 million). David F. Sandberg directed the sequel about a dollmaker whose creation terrorizes a group of orphan girls. For those invested in the “Conjuring” canon, it serves as a prequel to the first “Annabelle.” Stephanie Sigman, Talitha Bateman, Anthony LaPaglia, and Miranda Otto star in the pic that critics have generally given a thumbs up to (it currently has an 68% on Rotten Tomatoes).

“Annabelle is scary as hell,” said Jeff Goldstein, distribution chief at Warner Bros. “And it’s exciting to see

how broadly audiences enjoyed it,” he said, adding, “I think our marketing team did a fabulous job.”

The same studio’s “Dunkirk” continues to show strong during its fourth weekend, as it holds onto second place.

One of the lone bright spots in a generally dismal summer for the box office, Christopher Nolan’s World War II epic should make an additional $11.4 million this weekend, pushing its domestic total past the $150 million mark.

While it should land in the top three, Open Road’s sequel “Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature” appears to be a miss. From 4,003 locations, the animated adventure should earn $8.9 million. That’s less than half of the first “Nut Job” movie, which opened to $19.4 million before going on to take in $120.9 million worldwide during its run. The sequel’s story centers around a group of animals who attempt to save their home from being bulldozed and turned into an amusement park. (rtr)

The cigarettes fuel his art; he breaks them in half, painstakingly traces out monochrome images of celebrities or animals with the fine flakes of tobacco, then sprinkles his creations with gunpowder and sets them on fire.

The resulting scorch-marks on the white paper form the portrait.

Habrouk, now 23, started us-

ing unusual materials to make images a couple of years ago, experimenting with coffee, salt and sand before settling on the tobacco technique because it is more durable.

“The idea is that I’m trying to make the art live longer,” he told Reuters.

Portugal asks for help from Europe to fight fires

LISBON - More than 3,000 firemen struggled to put out forest fires across Portugal on Sunday, after the country requested assistance from Europe to fight blazes that threaten to spread with more hot weather in the coming days.

Exceptionally dry and hot weather ignited Portugal’s worst fire disaster in memory early this summer, killing 64 people, and fires have continued to flare up in recent weeks with the arrival of each new hotter spell of weather. Interior Minister Constanca Urbana de Sousa said the country sent the request for help to Europe late on Saturday because of concerns that high temperatures and high winds in the coming days could increase the number of fires.

The minister said the request was carried out “because of a question of prudence” due to the weather forecast for coming days, according to news agency Lusa. It covered requests for firefighting airplanes and firemen and

is part of a European mechanism for cooperation to fight fires.

Emergency services said 268 fires broke out on Saturday, the highest number for any single day this year, with 6,500 firemen fighting to put them out. There are fears that many of them could flare up again later on Sunday, with higher winds and temperatures that hit in the afternoon.

The central district of Coimbra adopted a local state of emergency to deal with fires, as did four smaller municipalities in the region.

While fires have burned through the summer none has had the tragic impact of the one in late June, as emergency services have gone to far greater efforts to evacuate villages

and shut roads early in affected areas.

But the country could face many more weeks of fires before the end of summer.

More than 140,000 hectares of forest have burned this summer in Portugal, more than three times higher than the average over the last 10 years, according to European Union data.
