Gyllenhaal taps courage of Boston bombing survivor for ‘Stronger’

TORONTO - Jake Gyllenhaal put his “heart and soul” into “Stronger”, a film about Jeff Bauman, who lost his legs in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, and in the process found inspiration and a special kinship with Bauman. Based on Bauman’s memoir by the same name, the film directed by David Gordon Green centers around his difficult journey toward walking again, his struggle with post traumatic stress, and his bewilderment and reluctance to being called a “hero”. “No matter what you’ve been through in your life, Jeff shows you that can get through it,” Gyllenhaal said after the film’s premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday. “To me, I couldn’t think of a better movie to put my heart and soul into.” Gyllenhaal, whose production company Nine Stories chose “Stronger” as its first film, said he was faced every day with the fact that he probably could not do what Bauman did and called him one of the strongest people he knew. Gyllenhaal admitted to being intimidated when he first met Bauman, knowing the impossibility of matching the reality of Bauman’s experience. But as they spent time together, he quickly saw a connection and why Green cast him for the part. (rtr)

Mund, 23, was one of 51 contestants in the pageant, representing the 50 United States and the District of Columbia. Mund, who adopted the Makea-Wish foundation which benefits children with life-threatening conditions as her platform for the competition, performed a jazz dance to “The Way You Make Me Feel” for the contest’s talent portion, wearing

a double-breasted black mini-dress with a matching fedora-type hat. In a question-and-answer session, Mund weighed in on the United States’ recent withdrawal from the Paris climate accord, saying she thought it was a “bad decision.” “Whether you believe it (climate change) or not, we need to be at that table,” she added. The first runner-up was Miss Missouri, Jennifer Davis, who competed on a platform of diversity. She was followed by contestants from New Jersey, Kaitlyn Schoef-

fel, District of Columbia, Briana Kinsey and Texas, Margana Wood. The pageant was broadcast live on ABC from Atlantic City, New Jersey. The contest returned to the seaside gambling resort a few years ago after nearly a decade in Las Vegas. It was dropped by ABC in 2004 following a steep ratings decline, but returned after years on cable. Judges scored contestants, who ranged from teen-agers to the cut-off age of 24, based on talent, the live question segment, a personal interview and appearances in gowns and swimsuits. (rtr)

FLORIDA CITY/MARCO ISLAND - S torm-shocked Floridians returned to shattered homes on Monday as the remnants of Hurricane Irma pushed inland, leaving more than half of all state residents without power and city streets underwater from Orlando and Jacksonville into coastal Georgia and South Carolina. Downgraded to a tropical storm early on Monday, Irma had ranked as one of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes on record before barreling into the Florida Keys on Sunday and plowing northward along the Gulf Coast and moving inland to wreak havoc across a wide swath of the third-most populous U.S. state. Still, the scope of damage in Florida and neighboring states paled in comparison with the utter devastation left by Irma as a rare Category 5 hurricane in parts of the Caribbean, where the storm killed nearly 40 people - at least 10 of them in Cuba - before turning its fury on Florida. pecially hard hit in the United States was the resort archipelago of the Keys, extending into the Gulf of Mexico from the tip of Florida’s peninsula and connected to the mainland by a single, narrow highway, Governor Rick Scott told a news conference on Monday.

“There’s devastation,” he said, adding that virtually every mobile-home park on the island chain was left upended. “It’s horrible what we saw.” While some evacuees from the Keys expressed anger at authorities refusing to allow them to return to their homes on Monday, the

U.S. Defense Department said as many as 10,000 residents who had stayed put on the island may now be stranded and in need of evacuation. Monroe County fire officials said later they would reopen road access on Tuesday morning at 7 a.m. EDT (1100 GMT) for residents and business owners from Key Largo, the main island at the upper end of the chain, as well as the towns of Tavernier and Islamorada farther to the south. Since master painter Nyoman Gunarsa died on September 10, the atmosphere at his home in Banda hamlet, Takmung, Banjarangkan has remained quiet the only activity going on so far is the cleanup of the yard. Friends and relatives have been coming by to express their condolences and number of wreathes from several public figures including Joko Widodo have also arrived. So far, there have been no preparations for the funeral ceremony. One of Gunarsa’ sons Gede Artison Andrawata, revealed that preparations for the ceremony will start on September 21. Before that then there will be no activities. “There is still a lot of time before the ceremony, for not we are just cleaning up”, he said. According to the requests of the deceased related to the ngaben (cremation) ceremony, the family will make the bade tower and ox sarcophagus at home. They will make the ox sarcophagus in purple. Although the deceased did not specifically request this color, he had asked for this color when his mother was cremated several years ago. Unfortunately, at that time it could not be realised. “ My father asked that the bade and sarcophagus be made at home even if they are not so well made. We will discuss the matter and consult with griya (Brahmin’s priest house)”, he said. This Klungklung legislator said that he maintains his father’s collection of paintings pursuant to the message that his father transmitted to him before dying. This includes reviving the museum by holding events such as exhibitions and other art events. “It also includes keeping this country strong by maintaining Pancasila and the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI). My father was very patriotic and this sentiment remains strong” he added. This native to Klungkung passed away on Sunday (Sep. 10) after undergoing treatment for four days at Sanglah Hospital due to the illness he suffered. He left behind his wife Indrawati Gunarsa, son Gede Artison Andrawata and two daughters, Komang Artisti Sekar Linuih and Luh Astiti Andrawati, and seven grandchildren. He also left behins a myriad of attractive paintings stored in the Nyoman Gunarsa Museum and the Indonesia Contemporary Museum that was inaugurated by President Joko Widodo on August 4. Before his death, Gunarsa made a painting depicting all seven presidents on Indonesia as well as several ministers. President Jokowi gestures as the puppet master while the others play gamelan. Although he did not manage to complete the 4x3 meter painting, this art work still expresses Gunarsa’s message of hope: “how beautiful it would be if all the presidents were unified”. This phrase becomes one that today’s leadership can reflect on. “This painting is the last one that my father worked on but it was not completed. He painting this while he was sick. South African woman charged with 18 years in prison for importing crystal meth

DENPASAR - Having been declared guilty of importing class 1 narcotics in the form of crystal meth, the defendant, a South African woman named Olwethu Sizwekazi Mcinga, was charged with 18 years in prison on Monday (Sep. 11). Prosecutor Fithrah before the panel of judges led by I Wayan Sukanila stated that the defendant who lived in Johannesburg was proven to have imported narcotics under Article 113 paragraph 2 of Law No. 35/2009. In addition to corporal punishment for 18 years, the defendant was also charged with a fine of IDR 10 billion or subsidiary punishment of six months in prison. Over the charges making her free from the death penalty and or life sentence, the defendant through her legal counsel, Yanuar Nahak, filed an oral defence. She asked the panel of judges who tried the case to give her a light sentence. “In principle, she (the defendant) does regret of her actions”, said Yanuar. He had previously told the defendant that with evidence of more than 1 kg, exactly 1,135 kg, the threat of punishment is a life sentence and or the death penalty. “I submit, if you are free from these charges, you should be grateful”, said Yanuar. Initially, they wouldsubmitted a written plean had the prosecutor had asked for a life sentence or the death penalty. “However, just now we submit-

ted the defence verbally because she was charged with 18 years imprisonment. I think this is fair enough”, said Yanuar, adding that the defendant was naturally disappointed by the prosecutor’s demands. As described in the prosecutor’s charge, the case opened with the arrest of this South African woman, defendant Olwethu Sizwekazi Mcinga, on February 19, 2017 at the international arrival terminal of Ngurah Rai Airport. The defendant was then accused of without rights and against the law producing and importing class 1 narcotics in the form of crystal meth exceeding five grams. The defendant admitted that she initially met Mr. William (on the wanted list) at Centel Mall of Johannesburg, South Africa, and delivered the message of Mr. Victor (on wanted list) to the defendant to come to Indonesia. Prior to flying to Bali, the defendant refused the request to go to Indonesia under the pretext that her passport was missing. Mr. William then handed over RNDS 800 for her to get a new one. After getting her new passport, the defendant flew to Indonesia carrying the illicit goods. The defendant was asked to wear a corset containing three clear plastic wraps coated with brown duct tape containing crystal meth. Japan trials driverless cars in bid to keep rural elderly on the move

Apple set to unveil anniversary iPhone in major product launch CUPERTINO - A decade after then-CEO Steve Jobs unveiled the first iPhone, Apple Inc on Tuesday is set to introduce a completely redesigned top-of-the-line iPhone along with two other new phones, as well as a big upgrade to the Apple Watch and a higher-definition Apple TV. The splashy launch event will take place at the Steve Jobs Theater at Apple’s new Apple Park “spaceship” campus - widely considered to be the final product designed by Jobs, who died in 2011. The new products and the holiday shopping season that follows are the most important for Apple in years. The company has sold more than 1.2 billion iPhones over the past decade and ushered in the era of mobile computing, but last year suffered a substantial decline in revenue as many consumers rejected the iPhone 7 as being too similar to the iPhone 6. Apple hopes the new high-end phone, expected to be called the iPhone X, will silence critics who say the company has lost its innovation edge. It features an edge-to-edge display with richer colors and facial recognition to unlock the phone without the need for a fingerprint reader or physical home button. The two other models, expected to be called the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, are intended to update the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. They could also include some new features, such as a glass back similar to the iPhone 4 that would help facilitate wireless charging. The phones are expected to come with a steep price tag. Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi predicts the top-end model will cost $899, though other analysts expect it to cross the $1,000 threshold. That compares to a top base price of $769 for the iPhone 7 Plus prior. Much of that added costs is driven by more expensive parts, like a higher-resolution display, 3D

sensors and more memory capacity. “Some of these components are just darned expensive. There’s just no doubt about that,” said Brian Blau, an Apple analyst at Gartner. Blau expects Apple to keep several lower priced models in its lineup.

NISHIKATA - As the annual rice harvest begins this month in the Japanese town of Nishikata, the combines that usually putter along the sleepy roads lining its rice fields are giving way to a vehicle residents have never before seen, a driverless shuttle bus. Japan is starting to experiment with self-driving buses in rural communities such as Nishikata, 115 km (71 miles) north of the capital, Tokyo, where elderly residents struggle with fewer bus and taxi services as the population ages and shrinks. The swift advance of autonomous driving technology is prompting cities such as Paris and Singapore to experiment with such services, which could prove crucial in Japan, where populations are not only greying, but declining, in rural areas. Japan could launch launch selfdriving services for remote communities by 2020, if the trials begun this month prove successful. The government plans to turn highway rest stops into hubs from which to ferry the elderly to medical, retail and banking services. “Smaller towns in Japan are greying even faster than cities, and there are just not enough workers to operate buses and taxis,” said Hiroshi Nakajima of mobile gaming software maker DeNA Co, which has branched into automo-

tive software. “But there are a lot of service areas around the country, and they could serve as a hub for mobility services,” added Nakajima, the firm’s automotive director. In the initial trials of the firm’s driverless six-seater Robot Shuttle, elderly residents of Nishikata, in Japan’s Tochigi prefecture, were transferred between a service area and a municipal complex delivering healthcare services. The town mirrors Japan’s population profile, with roughly a third of its 6,300 residents aged 65 or more, up from about a quarter four years ago, while the population overall has shrunk 4.5 percent. Daily bus services are limited to just a handful. “I worry about not being able to go out when I’m no longer able to drive,” said one test rider, Shizu Yuzawa, adding that she would be open to using such a service. “As people in towns become older and younger people move away, it’s going to become more difficult to get help getting around,” said the spry 77-year-old, who drives around in a mini-pick-up truck that belonged to her late husband. The test also checked the vehicle’s operational safety in road conditions ranging from puddles to fallen debris, and if those crossing its path would react to the warning it emits. (rtr)

WATCH FOR WIRELESS NETWORKS

Analysts also expect Apple to reveal a new Apple TV that operates at higher resolution than its previous set. The higher resolution could play into Apple’s efforts to court Hollywood, which have shifted into a higher gear recently with two high-profile executives hired away from Sony. The company is also expected to reveal more details about the HomePod, its voice-activated home speaker that competes against Amazon.com Inc’s Echo devices and the Google Home speaker. Apple announced the HomePod in June and said it will ship in December. Lastly, Apple is expected to announce a new version of the Apple Watch. Previous versions of the watch had to be tethered to a user’s phone in order to receive send or receive data, but the new version is expected to connect to wireless data networks just like a phone. BANGLI - The impact of this year’s dry season has begun to be felt by residents of Suter village, Kintamani as people here have started having to buy expensive water. Water in the local tanks is running low. Headman of Suter, Wayan Nyepeg, when contacted on Monday (Sep. 11) revealed that the impact of drought has been felt by residents for the last few weeks. The stocks of water in the reservoir and tanks are very low and in some cases empty. “Since 15 days ago, residents have started to purchase water. The water costs IDR 220,000 per truck containing 5,000-6,000 liters”, he explained. One truck of water lasts the average family about 1 month. However larger families and local residents who are raising livestock need to buy water more often. Nyepeg acknowledged that such condition are routinely faced by his village every year, adding that

this year is not especially severe. People have been able to buy water without having to line up. “So farm things are safe”, he said. Lovina Festival to feature culture and marine conservation

Security, not scandal, on agenda for Trump, Malaysia’s Najib

SINGARJA — The Lovina Festival 2017 will come again on September 14 to 19. This event does not only promote tourism potential owned by North Bali, but also becomes a good opportunity to do marine conservation. During the festival, there will be exhibition and cultural performance by the Lovina tourism buffer village. BUSINESS German economy to grow by more than 2 percent this year - BDI

BERLIN - The German economy is set to grow by more than 2 percent this year adjusted for calendar effects, which would be the strongest rate in six years, the BDI industry association said on Tuesday as it lifted its growth forecast for Europe’s biggest economy. The outlook followed a more muted message from the Economy Ministry, which said the economy could lose some momentum in the second half after powering ahead in the first six months. Record-high employment, rising real wages and ultra-low borrowing costs are driving a consumerled upswing in the German economy that looks set to help Chancellor Angela Merkel win a fourth term in office in a federal election on Sept. 24. The ministry, which has a reputation of giving more cautious outlooks, said in its monthly report that growth would continue in the second half. “However, the dynamics are likely to be somewhat weaker,” it said. The ministry is so far sticking to its 2017 growth forecast of 1.5 percent unadjusted, which would translate into 1.8 percent on a calendaradjusted basis. But economists expect the government to raise that in its autumn outlook, due at the end of next month. Drawing its forecasts from its close links to more than 100,000 large, medium-sized and small firms from all branches of processing industry, which together employ more than 8 million employees, the BDI sees more upbeat figures. “The German economy is picking up speed,” BDI said in its quarterly economic report. It now expects unadjusted gross domestic product (GDP) to expand by 1.8 percent this year, up from its previous estimate of 1.5 percent. “Adjusted for calendar effects, this corresponds with a growth rate of slightly more than 2 percent,” BDI said, adding the main reason for the improved outlook was the global recovery.

In addition, retail sales fell more than expected on the month in July, suggesting that household spending lost some momentum at the beginning of the third quarter. The ministry said that overall business morale remained high and firms continued to hire new staff. “But employment growth could be somewhat slower. Also, production in manufacturing and construction could expand rather moderately,” it added. The German economy grew 0.7 percent on the quarter in the first three months of the year and 0.6 percent from April to June, driven by increased household and state spending as well as higher investments in buildings and machinery. “The net contribution of foreign trade to overall economic growth was slightly positive in the first half of the year,” the ministry said, adding that the robust labour market was fuelling domestic demand while the ECB’s low interest rates and the slightly cheaper oil prices were providing further impulses.(rtr)

At that time, people of Seraya have a religious cultural tradition to beg for rain. This tradition is played by two men, where the player hits each other with a rattan whip of two meters long. It is accompanied with a piece of shield with a diameter of 60 cm made of dry cowhide tied to wooden frame. Other than the players, in the arena of the game there are also two people serving as referee or pakembar. Even though their body is hit by rattan, they are still happy and dance with joy. Meanwhile, the sound of the baleganjur gamelan music is played as a companion to heat up the atmosphere of “the war.” At the same time, the audience keeps cheering to give support to the one on one fight. Hardliners to protest French labour reform after Macron chides “slackers”

PARIS - President Emmanuel Macron faces the first challenge on the streets to his business-friendly reform agenda on Tuesday, when workers from the hard-left CGT union march through French cities to protest against a loosening of labour regulations. Sounding a call to the working class, Philippe Martinez, the head of the Communist Party-linked CGT, branded the reforms a “social coup d’etat” and took offence at his pledge to give no ground to “slackers”. Labour unions have scuppered previous attempts to weaken France’s labour code, but this time there was comfort for Macron as two other unions, including the largest, the CFDT, declined to join the protests. After weeks of negotiations, the government last month set out measures including a cap on payouts for dismissals judged unfair, and greater freedom for companies to hire and fire. The reform makes no direct reference to the 35-hour week, a totem of the labour code, though it hands firms more flexibility to set pay and working conditions. The government plans to adopt the new measures, being implemented by decree, on Sept. 22. During a trip to Athens on Friday, Macron told French business leaders: “I am fully determined and I won’t cede any ground, not to slackers, nor cynics,

nor hardliners.” He said the “slackers” comment was aimed at those who had failed to push through reforms in the past, but many interpreted it as an attack on the unemployed or on workers making the most of job protection. French workers have long cherished the rights enshrined in the labour code. But companies complain it has deterred investment and job creation and stymied economic growth. Trade, investment agreements must not violate human rights

JAKARTA - The Indonesia for Global Justice (IGJ) stated that various trade and investment agreements that the Indonesian government signed with other countries must not violate human rights. “The protection of investment must not contradict the policy to meet human rights,” IGJ Executive Director Rachmi Hertanti stated here on Monday. Any trade agreement which allows a multinational company to influence internal policies is unacceptable, she noted. She was referring to the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between Indonesia and the European Union, which is now being negotiated. The inclusion of investment chapter in the proposed CEPA will restrict the Indonesian governments capability to control public interests. The investment chapter includes a clause allowing foreign investors to sue the state if its public policy has a detrimental impact on their profit, she added. Indonesia has received several investment claims

involving millions of dollars and has been forced to reduce the number of domestic development policies while at the same time ignoring tighter environmental protection regulation, she remarked. “The assessment of impact on human rights must be conducted soon to guide the negotiations. The potential impact of CEPA also requires more transparent process and full involvement of the national parliament,” she explained. The government has encouraged the conclusion of bilateral and multilateral cooperation agreements to increase non-oil/non-gas exports, which are expected to increase 5.6 percent this year. Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita stated that recently Indonesia was trying to conclude 16 cooperation agreements soon, and four of them will be concluded in relative short time. “We will conclude the cooperation agreements as soon as possible,” he revealed. The four agreements are Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) with Iran, Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IA-CEPA), European Free Trade Association (EFTA) CEPA, and bilateral cooperation with Chile, including Peru. Champions League ‘a big objective’ for PSG, says Emery

Paris St Germain manager Unai Emery believes his side face increased pressure to deliver success in the Champions League following their transfer splurge ahead of the season. PSG signed Brazil’s Neymar for a world record fee of 222 million euros ($265.40 million) during the off-season and also recruited Kylian Mbappe on loan from AS Monaco. Mbappe is expected to make his move permanent in 12 months for a reported 180 million euros.

PSG have never won the Champions League title, nor made the semi-finals since 1995, but expectations have risen since they were bought by Qatari Sports Investment in 2011 and won four of their six Ligue 1 titles since then. They have not, however, progressed beyond the quarter-finals in Europe’s premier intercontinental club competition since the acquisition and Emery said those results now take precedence. “I know it is a big

objective for the club, but we are doing and feeling well, the players are doing well but I know it will be difficult,” Emery told reporters ahead of their clash with Scottish champions Celtic. “I know I have a lot of responsibility because I have a lot of good players at my disposal and there are some good teams in the Champions League, and Celtic is one of them. “I don’t know (if PSG are favourites), but with the players and quality we have we should get close this year.” PSG would be wary of Brendan Rodgers’s Celtic side, who are unbeaten in 54 domestic matches. Liverpool will appeal the length of Sadio Mane’s three-match ban after he was sent off during last Saturday’s 5-0 defeat by Manchester City, according to multiple British media reports. The Senegal forward incurred a direct red card for a high challenge on City goalkeeper Ederson in the 37th minute and is set to miss Saturday’s league game against Burnley and two upcoming games at Leicester City, one in the league and one in the League Cup. Liverpool will not appeal the 25-year-old’s dismissal but believe a three-match ban is too harsh for the incident. If successful, the ban could be reduced by one or two games. The English Football Association (FA) have been informed of the Merseyside club’s appeal and an independent regulatory commission will hear the case later on Tuesday, provided they receive all the evidence in advance, according to The Times. FA to increase World Cup cyber security over hacking concerns

The English Football Association will increase cyber security for the 2018 World Cup in Russia after hacking attacks by a group suspected of links to a Russian spy agency, media reports said. The FA has written a letter to soccer’s governing body FIFA expressing its concerns about sensitive information such as injuries, strategies and tactics being leaked before matches during the World Cup, British newspapers said. England players and staff have been advised not to use public WiFi in Russia, including the connections provided at the team hotel. According to media reports, the FA has also strengthened firewalls, introduced encrypted passwords and have strict guidelines for players regarding social media.
