Stone lauds Billie Jean King at ‘Battle of the Sexes’ screening TORONTO - Academy Award winner Emma Stone praised tennis great Billie Jean King’s for pushing social change for women while battling her own insecurities at the Toronto premiere of “Battle of the Sexes” on Sunday night. Stone plays King in the story of her famous 1973 tennis match against retired former champion and male chauvinist Bobby Riggs, played by Steve Carell. “I think the thing that was most inspiring to me...was that Billie Jean was going through so many personal trials at the time and discovering so much about herself,” Stone said on the red carpet at the Toronto International Film Festival. Along with the highly-publicized grudge match, the film also covers King’s sexual exploration via a off-court relationship with a woman. She did not publicly identify as a lesbian until 1981. “In this time period she was confused and scared and still was able to effect such massive social change,” said Stone, who won an Oscar earlier this year for “La La Land”. King, who won the match, played a pivotal role in the fight for equal pay for female athletes and is considered a major influence on the women’s liberation movement as a whole. But more than 40 years later, the issue of equal pay, both in tennis and the wider working world, is still simmering. “It’s eerily relevant these days, and sadly it’s, I think, more relevant than it should be at this point,” Carell said ahead of the screening. A tennis tournament executive, Raymond Moore of the BNP Paribas Open, last year said that top-level women’s players rode “on the coattails of the men” and were “very, very lucky” to have equal prize money. He stepped down from the role several months later amid heavy criticism, with tournament owner Larry Ellison citing King’s “historic campaign for the equal treatment of women in tennis” when announcing the move. MEXICO CITY - A massive earthquake off southern Mexico on Thursday night that killed at least 91 people damaged tens of thousands of homes and afflicted upwards of two million people in the poorer south, state officials said, as more details of the disaster emerged.

The 8.1 magnitude quake off the coast of Chiapas state was stronger than a 1985 temblor that flattened swaths of Mexico City and killed thousands. However, its greater depth and distance helped save the capital from more serious damage. On Saturday, authorities in the southern state of Oaxaca said there were 71 confirmed fatalities there, many of them in the town of Juchitan, where the rush to bury victims crowded a local cemetery at the weekend. Another death was confirmed in neighboring Chiapas late on Sunday, bringing the total there to 16, a spokesman for local emergency services said. A further four deaths have also been registered in Tabasco state to the north. Television footage from parts of

Oaxaca showed small homes and buildings completely leveled by the quake, which struck the narrowest portion of Mexico on the isthmus of Tehuantepec. Aftershocks continued into Sunday, and scores of people were wary about returning to fragile buildings hammered by the initial tremor, sleeping in gardens, patios and in the open air. Piles of rubble lay strewn around damaged streets, where the shock was still visible on the faces of residents. Oaxaca Governor Alejandro Murat told Mexican television the quake hit 41 municipalities and had likely affected around one in five of the state’s 4 million-strong population. “We’re talking about more than 800,000 people who potentially lost everything, and some their loved

ones,” he said on Sunday. In Juchitan alone, more than 5,000 homes were destroyed. Hundreds of thousands of Mexicans were temporarily left without electricity or water, and many in the south were evacuated from coastal dwellings when the quake sparked tsunami warnings. Content procurement of Masceti Subak Museum worth IDR 6.5 billion GIANYAR —Procurement of the content for subak museum located around the Masceti Beach, Blahbatuh, is ensured to be realized before the end of this year. This considers the disbursement of the budget worth IDR 6.5 billion from amended national state budget (APBN) 2017. Currently, the use of the funds has entered tender stage. Head of the Gianyar Culture Agency, Gusti Ngurah Wijana, through the Division Head of Cultural Heritage and Museum, Wayan Suda, said the funds from the ministry of culture and education of the RI amounting to IDR 6.5 billion is being processed through the procurement services unit (ULP). “Later on, this unit will inform the partner that can help the procurement of content for the museum,” he said when met on Wednesday (Sep. 6). Suda said that procurement of the content includes agricultural equipment having a cultural heritage value. To look for equipment aged 50 years has also been followed up by making data collection to a number of farmers in Gianyar. “Some properties have been available in the data. Then, they will be requested by the agency by giving compensation,” he explained. He said the content also includes the procurement of dioramas featuring agricultural system in Gianyar. A Balinese traditional house will also equip the museum that remains to be made from clay. “Later on, there is also a Balinese ancient house. To be sure, it is different from the contemporary Balinese house,” he said. All the contents describing about the local wealth of Gianyar will be packed using information technology, so that they will be more easily understood by visitors. “All displays will adopt information technology, but its traditional spirit remains to be maintained,” he said. Suda said that procurement of all the contents using the budget worth IDR 6.5 billion has the deadline until December 15. Then, there are fears on the lack of partners that dare to take the offer considering the time limit is short. “We are aware that it is not only Gianyar proposing the assistance request to central government but also the other regions throughout Indonesia. We cannot do much after the budget is disbursed in the amended state budget, while now the time limit is very short,” he said. As scheduled, the museum will be launched in February 2018, before the term of office of Gianyar Regent, A.A. Gde Agung Bharata, ends. Related to the museum name, it will be reviewed again considering that the identity of subak museum has been available in Tabanan. “Our leadership is going to give slightly different identity because the name of subak museum has existed in Tabanan,” he said. Suda reminded that physical construction of the subak museum uses the budget from central government started in 2014. It was begun with building structures worth about IDR 2 billion followed by a two-tiered structure in 2015 worth about IDR 10 billion. Finishing of the third stage was also funded by state budget in 2016 amounting IDR 9 billion. “They are added to the current budget worth IDR 6.5 billion, so they totally cost IDR 27.5 billion,” he said. Besides, this project also obtained budget from regional budget of Gianyar in 2016 worth approximately IDR 1.6 billion for workmanship of parking space. Furthermore, this museum will be integrated with the One-Day River Tour managed by the Gianyar tourism office. He said that in the draft, visitors will take day trip in Gianyar district. The visit starts at the Subak Museum, resumed with the exploration to Pakerisan River watershed getting recognition as the World Cultural Heritage from the UNESCO and ultimately ends with a culinary tour to Gianyar Market. Payment gateway provider must apply information security standards

DENPASAR —In accordance with the Regulation of Bank Indonesia (PBI) No. 18/40 / PBI / 2016 concerning the Implementation of Payment Transaction Processing, if providers of payment system are proved to have committed double swipe, they shall be liable to administrative sanctions in the form of reprimands, fines, suspensions of all activities of the payment system services, and / or revocation of licenses as payment service providers. This was conveyed by the Head of Bank Indonesia (BI) Representative Office for Bali Region, Causa Iman Karana, recently. He said that in the processing of payment transactions, each payment system service provider must apply risk management effectively and consistently. Service providers are also required to apply information security system standards, conduct payment processing domestically, apply consumer protection and comply with statutory regulations. “Provider of the payment system services shall also submit a report on the processing of payment transactions to Bank Indonesia consisting of periodic reports and incidental reports,” he said. Bank Indonesia conducts a direct and indirect supervision against payment system providers. If required, Bank Indonesia shall also supervise the supporting operators in cooperation with the service providers of payment systems.

Related to that matter, providers of the payment system services are prohibited from processing payment transactions by using virtual currency, misusing data and information of customers as well as the data of payment transaction information, having and or managing a value that can be equalized to the value of money that can be used outside the scope of the respective payment system service provider. In the meantime, Chairman of Consumer Protection Institution Foundation (YLPK) Bali, I Putu Armaya, supported the measures of BI related to the prohibition of double swipe in non-cash transactions. “In every transaction, the card should only be swiped once in the Electronic Data Capture (EDC) machine, and does no other scraping, including on the

cash register. It is meant to protect consumers,” said Armaya. Bank Indonesia is expected more intensively do dissemination, not only to consumers but also to business players either banking or merchants having something to do with non-cash payment process. He also hoped business players in Bali to protect consumers. Armaya appealed that banks and merchants to be obedient to the rules and ban on double swiping. The YLPK Bali supported the measures of BI that terminates the cooperation with the merchants remaining to practice such double swiping. For reconciliation purposes, the transaction of payment and acquirers are expected to use other methods that do not involve double swiping. (kmb42)

Drinks industry distorts alcohol cancer risk - scientists

LONDON - The alcohol industry uses denial, distortion and distraction to mislead people about the risks of developing cancer from drinking, often employing similar tactics to those of the tobacco industry, a study said on Thursday. Drinks industry organisations often present the relationship between alcohol and cancer as highly complex, implying there is no clear evidence of a consistent link, said the study led by scientists at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and Sweden’s Karolinska Institutet. Other strategies include denying any relationship exists, or saying inaccurately that there is no risk with moderate drinking, the study found. The industry also seeks to mention a wide range of other real and potential cancer risk factors in an effort to present alcohol as just one of many, it added. Responding to the study, the

Distilled Spirits Council, a U.S. alcohol trade association, said it was “a highly selective” review authored by researchers with “antialcohol biases”. “The Council does not recommend that people drink alcohol for potential health benefits,” it said in a statement. “Drinking in moderation may pose health risks for some people, and some individuals should not drink at all.” The International Alliance for Responsible Drinking, which represents large brewers and distillers including Anheuser-Busch InBev and Diageo, said it disagreed with the study’s conclusions. “We ... stand by the information that we

publish on drinking and health,” it said. RISING RISK The World Health Organization says drinking alcohol is a wellestablished risk factor for a range of cancers, including tumours of the mouth, liver, breast and colon and bowel. And the risk of cancer rises with levels of alcohol consumed. The research team behind Thursday’s study analysed the information relating to cancer on the websites and documents of nearly 30 alcohol industry organisations around the world between September 2016 and December 2016. “The weight of scientific evidence

is clear - drinking alcohol increases the risk of some of the most common forms of cancer,” said Mark Petticrew, a professor of public Health at the LSHTM who co-led the study. “It has been argued that greater public awareness, particularly of the risk of breast cancer, poses a significant threat to the alcohol industry. Our analysis suggests that the major global alcohol producers may attempt to mitigate this by disseminating misleading information.” Petticrew’s team identified three main industry strategies: Denying any link with cancer, or selective omission of the relationship; distortion by mentioning some risk of cancer, but misrepresenting or obfuscating its size; and distraction by seeking to draw focus away from the risks of alcohol and towards other cancer risks. One of the most significant find-

ings was that industry materials omitted or misrepresented evidence on breast and bowel cancer, both of which are linked to drinking. When breast cancer was mentioned, 21 of the organisations studied gave no, or misleading, information about it, the study said. Ian Gilmore, chair of the Alcohol Health Alliance UK, said the study “clearly shows the alcohol industry misleading the public”. “With only 1 in 10 people aware of the link between alcohol and cancer, people have both a need and a right to clear information about the health risks of drinking alcohol.” Petticrew said the study’s findings, published in the journal Drug and Alcohol Review on Thursday, were important partly because the alcohol industry is often involved in spreading health information to people around the world. MANGUPURA — Fishermen of Kampong Kepiting at Tuban village, Kuta, are reluctant to sell their crabs to suppliers. It happens because this Wana Sari fishermen group was once fooled by suppliers that dispatched their farming products to foreign countries. In addition, the 93-members of the Wana Sari group are also reluctant to supply their marine farming products to nearby hotels and restaurants. the cultivation at mangrove area can reach 4,500 heads per month. At Kampong Kepiting, there are five crab floating boxes respectively containing 4,000 crabs. All fishermen catches such as in the form of fish, shrimp and crabs are sold to Kampong Kepiting ecotourism food stall.

At early hours, fishermen will start to go to sea and be back to mainland around 10:00 to take a rest. “In the afternoon, fishermen will keep crabs such as feeding them and so forth,” he said. Cultivating crab is considerably easy. To reach harvest time, crabs take a long time namely 8-9 months. “The maintenance indeed takes long time, but fattening only takes two months,” he said. Each crab floating box is man-

aged by nine fishermen through shift system to feed the crabs. He and other fishermen have arranged in such a way so that the crabs captured every day will not exceed 300 heads. It is done to avoid overstock and shortage of crab stock. “We harvest by applying sorting system, no longer massive harvest as carried out before,” he said. Preparing for retirement, Made Sumerta breeds ducks

NEGARA - Simple and unpretentious figure is the personality of Made Sumerta. This man from Pasar hamlet, Yehembang, Mendoyo, is a member of Pekutatan subdistrict police, Jembrana police and serves as village commissioned officer (Bhabinkamtibmas) at Manggis Sari village, Pekutatan. This police officer born on March 12, 1961 has been on duty for decades. Now, ahead of his retirement period, he has made preparation for the future of his family. Sumerta was graduated from SPN Singaraja police school. In the period of 1979-1980, he was directly assigned in a conflicting area, namely the Aileu district police, East Timor. He served in East Timor from 1980 to 1988. Having been successful in carrying out the tasks in the conflicting area, this father of three sons was also awarded the Satya Lencana Sroja, an award given by the state to police officers that have performed their duties well in the conflicting area. Then after completing the assignment in East Timor, he married to Ni Komang Yuliani, 55, a civil

servant at the Gilimanuk harbor administration and in 1988 he was transferred to the West Lombok Police, NTB. After serving in West Lombok Police, Sumerta was transferred to this home region in Jembrana in 2000. Because of his proximity to the community, he was then entrusted to carry out his duties as Bhabinkamtibmas. Since transferred to Jembrana district police and living in his hometown, at Pasar hamlet, Yehembang, Mendoyo, he had looked for new job in order to get additional income. He chose to be a duck breeder. At the beginning, this side job was carried out by hiring some local residents to raise his ducks. He said that his job as a member of Bhabinkamtibmas is very crowded

and takes a lot of time to get down to the community. So, he entrusts his ducks to some residents. Other than raising ducks, he also raises pigs, chickens for caru oblation and rooster. In fact, the results are good to cover additional household expenses, including helping to pay school tuition fee for the undergraduate education of his children. Moreover, the first son was successful and got a civil servant position at Singaraja harbor administration. Since the breeding adequately helps the family’s economy, from 2015 he began to focus on his own breeding at backyard with the help of his wife. At this time, he is raising 600 ducks with the production of averagely 450 eggs per day sold for IDR 1,500 each. So, every day he earns IDR 675,000 from the sales of duck eggs. Tourism office proposes tourist object arrangement to central govt AMLAPURA — A number of tourist attractions in Karangasem still lack public facilities. It is often complained by local and foreign tourists such as at Tulamben, Jemeluk, Yeh Malet and Ujung Water Palace. To add public facilities at the location, the Karangasem tourism office proposed the arrangement of the tourist objects and provision of supporting facilities, such as toilet, information centers and gazebo. Head of the Karangasem Tourism Office, I Wayan Astika, recently said that many tourist objects in Karangasem have not yet been organized. However, due to budget constraints, the tourism office should be able to seize the funds of central government, especially the special allocation fund (DAK) from the ministry of tourism. For the arrangement of Tulamben tourist attraction, the proposed amount is IDR 9.1 billion; Jemeluk (IDR 9.8 billion), Yeh Malet (IDR 5 billion) and the largest amount is for the arrangement of the Ujung Water Palace totally coming to IDR 35 billion. “The draft we propose amounts to that size. ATHENS - Greece will exit successfully its bailout programme in 2018 helped by strong growth, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said on Saturday, vowing to support workers, young Greeks and small businesses as the economy recovers. Addressing a Greek public worn out by austerity and sceptical after years of reform efforts have failed to fix the country’s woes, Tsipras said his leftist-led government would do whatever it takes to end lenders’ supervision next year. “The country, after eight whole years, will have exited bailouts and suffocating supervision. That’s our aim,” Tsipras said in his annual policy speech in the northern city of Thessaloniki. “We are determined to do everything we can.” Greece’s current international bailout, worth 86 billion euros, expires next year. Tsipras’ term ends a year later. Tsipras said Athens would continue to outperform its fiscal targets and fight endemic tax evasion to create fiscal room for tax cuts that would alleviate the burden on businesses and households, long squeezed by the debt crisis. Greece has received about 260 billion euros in bailout aid from its eurozone partners and the International Monetary Fund since 2010 in return for draconian austerity which has wiped out a quarter of its output and cut tens of thousands of jobs. Unemployment stood at 21.2 percent in June, the euro zone’s highest, with young Greeks the hardest hit. Greece’s economy is expected to grow by about two percent in 2018, a sign that sacrifices are bearing fruit, Tsipras said outlining initiatives to boost employment and fight a brain drain. A march of thousands of workers was largely peaceful outside the venue where he spoke. Tsipras said the state would give financial incentives to employers to hire more younger workers and spend 156 million euros to subsidise social security contributions of employers who will turn contractors into full-time staff. The government will also pay 100 million euros to subsidise unpaid workers in struggling sectors and businesses, he said, promising to fight labour law violations. LONDON - Bank of England rate setters won’t shock markets with any policy moves when they meet next week as a struggling economy and Brexit fears offset any concerns over inflation sailing well above target. Britain’s economy initially withstood the shock of last year’s decision to quit the European Union but slowed sharply in early 2017 and is expected to grow by just 0.3 percent this quarter, half the rate of the euro zone. That poses a challenge for the central bank as, rather than targeting growth, its main remit is to keep inflation -- currently running at 2.6 percent -- at 2 percent. “We expect the Bank of England to leave monetary policy unchanged, given the subdued growth story and ongoing Brexit uncertainty,” said James Knightley at ING. “Nonetheless, there are going to be members who continue to vote for a rate hike, given that consumer price inflation is likely to move higher once again.” At the last meeting two members of the Monetary Policy Committee voted to increase rock-bottom interest rates, but none of their seven colleagues are expected to join them on Thursday in calling for higher borrowing costs. “Our own view is that rates won’t rise this year or next. But that doesn’t mean the rollercoaster ride for expectations is over,” said Liz Martins at HSBC. “An unexpectedly hawkish tilt from the MPC in September could mean a kneejerk reaction which pushes sterling and rates higher -- if only temporarily.” The risk of a “bumpy Brexit” does not mean the Bank should keep interest rates at their record low, MPC member

The Swiss National Bank also meets on Thursday but is unlikely to move, with political tensions and low inflation keeping their hands tied. Switzerland’s franc is susceptible to appreciation during periods of increased geopolitical tension and the potential for conflict in the Korean peninsula will weigh on minds. North Korea has stepped up the development of weapons in defiance of U.N. sanctions and tested several missiles this year, including one that flew over Japan. Pyongyang conducted its sixth and biggest nuclear test on Sept. 3. TAMPA - Hurricane Irma pounded heavily populated areas of central Florida on Monday as it carved through the state with high winds, storm surges and torrential rains that left millions without power, ripped roofs off homes and flooded city streets. Irma, once ranked as one of the most powerful hurricanes recorded in the Atlantic, came ashore in Florida on Sunday and battered towns as it worked its way up the state. The storm gradually lost strength, weakening to a Category 1 hurricane overnight, the National Hurricane Center said. By 5 a.m. ET (0900 GMT), Irma was churning northwest in the center of the state and was about 60 miles (100 km) north of Tampa, with maximum sustained winds of 75 miles per hour (120 km per hour.)

Anti-graft body ready to face Novanto`s pretrial suit

JAKARTA - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is ready to face a pretrial motion filed by House of Representatives (DPR) Chairman Setya Novanto against its decision to name him a suspect in an ID-card graft case. “The legal bureau has received a letter from the South Jakarta District Court, and the court hearing is scheduled to be held on Tuesday (Sept 12). Hence, we have received and read the application for the pretrial,” KPK spokesman Febri Diansyah noted here on Friday. The court hearing will be led by judge Chepy Iskandar at the South

Jakarta District Court, he revealed. “We are still studying it. Of course, we will face whatever he demands during the hearing, as in our view, everything has been clear from the legal standpoint,” he noted. Spokesman for the district court Made Sutrisna said here on Sept 5 that Novanto had filed a pretrial suit with the court the day before. The anti-graft body had named him a suspect in the ID-card graft case on July 17, 2017. MADRID - Chris Froome became the first Briton to win the Vuelta a Espana and the third rider to win a double of the Tour de France and Vuelta in the same season when he finished the race by retaining his advantage over Vincenzo Nibali on Sunday.
