Apocalyptic horror “mother!” was conceived in five days, director says VENICE - Darren Aronofsky’s horror film “mother!” about humanity’s unstoppable destruction of the earth was conceived in just five days, the U.S director said ahead of the film’s world premiere on Tuesday. Aronofsky, known for “Black Swan” and “The Wrestler”, said at the Venice film festival that most of his movies take years to create but this was different.

He was inspired by what he saw around him and his inability to do much about it: from the United States pulling out of the Paris climate deal, an iceberg melting in the Arctic to people starving, while others live in opulence.

“I just had a lot of rage and anger, and I just wanted to channel it into one emotion, one feeling,” the Academy Award nominee told reporters. “And in five days I wrote the first version of the script. It just sort of poured out of me.”

The result is an apocalyptic metaphor, rich in religious, environmental and political undertones.

Jennifer Lawrence plays mother, a young wife who lives with her poet husband -- Javier Bardem -- in a secluded country house. While he is trying to overcome a serious bout of writer’s block, she is busy

restoring his family home.

Their seemingly idyllic existence starts falling apart when unexpected guests -- starting with Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer -- arrive at their doorstep.

Lawrence, whose roles usually focus on strong female leads, is thrust into portraying someone living to make her husband happy and asked to give and give until she can give no more.

“It was a completely different character from anything I’ve ever done before, but it was also a completely different side of myself that I wasn’t in touch with, didn’t really know yet,” the 27-year-old Academy Award winner said.

The two-hour film is set in one house, a massive villa surrounded by fields of grass. Aronofsky said he wanted to build on the idea that while we may ignore what’s happening on the other side of the world, we all can identify with the discomfort of someone invading our home and privacy.

Asked how she coped with media intrusion, Markle, a divorcee best known for her role in the U.S. TV legal drama “Suits”, said: “I can tell you at the end of the day I think it’s really simple.

We’re two people who are really happy and in love.”

She added: “We were very quietly dating for about six months before it became news and I was working during that whole time and the only thing that changed was people’s perception.

“Nothing about me changed. I’m still the same person that I am, and I’ve never defined myself by my relationship.”

The eye of Irma, a Category 5 storm packing winds of 185 miles per hour (295 km per hour), passed over the island of Barbuda east of Puerto Rico, early on Wednesday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami reported, possibly hitting Florida on Saturday.

“We are hunkered down and it is very windy ... the wind is a major threat,” said Garfield Burford, the director of news at ABS TV and Radio on the island of Antigua,

south of Barbuda. “So far, some roofs have been blown off.” Most people who were on Antigua and Barbuda were without power and about 1,000 people were spending the night in shelters in Antigua, according to Burford.

“It’s very scary ... most of the islands are dark so it’s a very, very frightening,” he said. The amount of damage and the number of casualties were not known early on Wednesday. A 75-year-old man

died while preparing for the storm in Puerto Rico’s central mountains, police said.

Several other Leeward Islands, including Anguilla, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, as well as for the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic were under a hurricane warning. “Preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to completion,” the Hurricane Center said, warning that Irma “will bring life-threatening wind, storm

surge and rainfall hazards” to those islands.

Along the beachfront of Puerto Rico’s capital, San Juan, work crews scrambled to cover windows with plywood and corrugated metal shutters along Avenida Ashford, a stretch of restaurants, hotels and six-story apartments. “I am worried because this is the biggest storm we have seen here,” said Jonathan Negron, 41, as he supervised workers boarding up his souvenir shop.

The NHC said Irma ranked as one of the five most powerful Atlantic hurricanes during the past 80 years and the strongest Atlantic basin storm ever outside the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico.

Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rossello urged the 3.4 million residents of the U.S. territory to seek refuge in one of 460 hurricane shelters in advance of the storm and later ordered police and National Guard troops to begin evacuations of flood-prone areas in the north and east of the island.

Due to huge waves, Waterblow Nusa Dua closed again

MANGUPURA - Since almost a month ago, the Waterblow Nusa Dua tourist area has been re-closed because of huge waves that can endanger visitors.

As a result, many tourists visiting the Peninsula Island, Nusa Dua, cannot see the scene of the waves hitting the reefs.

On Tuesday (Sep. 5), the entrance to the Waterblow location was closed by using bamboo logs and installed with a warning on red pamphlet emphasizing three points. Firstly, the Waterblow Nusa Dua is temporarily closed due to huge waves. Secondly, there is no lifeguard in the area. Thirdly, the Waterblow area is not covered by accident insurance, so any accident risk becomes the responsibility of visitors.

Though having been closed, the location remains to be thronged by visitors.

A local security guard on duty at the location said that it will be possibly opened after the kite season. “Now, the wind blow is still tight, maybe after the kite season the wind will be back to normal. It is dangerous sir, so please do apologize this area should be closed temporarily from around a month ago,” he said.

When confirmed to the Managing Director of Nusa Dua Resort, Wayan Karioka, he justified such condition. But he said that currently is applied the open-close system to this Waterblow tourist area. This step is taken due to huge sea waves that affect the sound of the waves. Previously, there had been an incident where a tourist was crashed by the waves.

on cooperation with insurance company. He admitted the tourist area currently has no guarantee of accident insurance for visitors. Besides, his management still attempted the

Many women have been reluctant to use hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for menopause symptoms since 2002.

Vaginal estrogen not tied to cancer or heart disease risks

LOS ANGELES - Using vaginally applied estrogen to ease menopause symptoms likely doesn’t increase a woman’s risk of heart disease or certain cancers, a U.S. study suggests.

Many women have been reluctant to use hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for menopause symptoms since 2002, when the federally funded Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) study linked pills containing man-made versions of the female hormones estrogen and progestin to an increased risk for breast cancer, heart attacks and strokes. Some women have also been reluctant to use vaginally applied estrogens, which can ease symptoms like dryness and painful intercourse.

For the current study, researchers examined data on 45,663 women in the WHI study who didn’t take HRT pills. After an average follow-up of more than six years, there wasn’t a meaningful difference in the odds of cancer, stroke or blood clots based on whether or not women used vaginal estrogen.

“The results of the study suggest that the use of vaginal estrogen may not actually carry the same health risks as the use of estrogen pills,” said lead study author Dr. Carolyn Crandall of the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles.

“These results are reassuring,” Crandall said by email.

Women go through menopause when they stop menstruating, typically between ages 45 and 55. As the ovaries curb production of the hormones estrogen and progesterone in the years leading up to menopause and afterward, women can experience symptoms ranging from irregular periods and vaginal dryness to mood swings and insomnia.

Study participants who used vaginal estrogen were less likely to be black or African-American, Hispanic, current smokers, diabetic or obese. They were also more likely to be white and college graduates with

household income of more than $100,000 a year.

Compared with women who didn’t use vaginal estrogen, women who did had a 48 percent lower risk of heart disease and 60 percent lower odds of hip fractures, researchers report in Menopause.

When researchers looked just at women who still had a uterus, the results looked even more favorable for vaginal estrogen users.

Among women who had not had their uterus removed, vaginal estrogen users were 61 percent less likely to have heart disease, and 60 percent less likely to have a hip fracture than women who didn’t use vaginal estrogen.

The study wasn’t a controlled experiment designed to prove whether or how vaginal estrogen might influence the odds of heart disease, cancer or other health problems.

Another limitation of the study is that researchers lacked data on different types of vaginal estrogen, so they couldn’t tell whether one form might be best for avoiding cancer or heart disease.

Even so, the findings should reassure women, said Dr. Michelle Warren, medical director of the Center for Menopause, Hormonal Disorders and Women’s Health in New York City.

“This shows that it is perfectly safe for any woman to take low-dose vaginal estrogen,” Warren, who wasn’t involved in the study, said by email.

Some women who have avoided vaginal estrogen because they thought it was just as risky as pills may now be able to get relief for previously untreated menopause symptoms, said Dr. Michael Thomas of the University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center in Ohio.

“A study like this allows women to safely use a form of estrogen that will help their (vaginal) symptoms,” Thomas, who wasn’t involved in the study, said by email. “They can have intercourse without pain and feel safe they are not risking their life.” (rtr)

For the study, researchers enrolled 78 gay and bisexual young men, ages 15 to 17, from six U.S. cities. The participants all tested negative for HIV at the start of the study, but were at high risk for an infection.

Participants received a counseling session about HIV risk, plus access to daily doses of PrEP for the next 48 weeks.

Overall, 47 participants completed the study.

Only three adverse events occurred that were possibly related to PrEP, the researchers found.

“I think the safety piece is important,” Hosek told Reuters Health. “It was well tolerated. We didn’t see many complaints about side effects. We did not see many adverse events.”

The researchers also didn’t find an increase in sexually risky behaviors over the study period.

Three young men did become infected with HIV, however.

Blood samples suggest they were taking less than two doses of PrEP each week at the time of infection.

The rate of HIV infection in the study was 6.4 cases per 100 people per year, which is about twice as high as the rate seen among men ages 18 to 22 years enrolled in a similar trial, the researchers write in JAMA Pediatrics. (rtr)

Coffee harvest failure in Bali reaches over 60 percent

Anti-HIV pill safe among gay, bisexual adolescent boys

CHICAGO - A pill that protects against the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) can be safely used by young men who have sex with men, according to a new study.

In a diverse group of teen boys at high risk for HIV infection, preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in the form of a pill that combines the drugs emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate was well tolerated, researchers found.

“I do hope clinicians increase their comfort with being able to provide PrEP to adolescents,” said lead author Sybil Hosek, a clinical psychologist and HIV researcher at Cook County Health and Hospitals System’s Stroger Hospital in Chicago.

She hopes the new data will be submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and will encourage the agency to approve the pill for use by younger people. The pill is currently approved for HIV prevention in adults.

The drug was first approved by the FDA in 2012 as Truvada, which was marketed by Gilead.

Trials found that the drug reduced the risk of HIV infection by over 90 percent.

But little evidence was collected on its use among gay and bisexual adolescent males, who are among those most at risk for HIV infection.

The main responsibility in this case lies in all walks of life, whether they are entrepreneurs, religious leaders, community figures, the community itself or so forth. This was confirmed by Director of Waste Management, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, R. Sudirman, in a working visit to the dropbox location as a collection center for carton packaging at Hypermart Bali Mall Galleria, on Tuesday (Sep. 5).

As an environmental coach, especially waste management, his directorate strongly supports the garbage collection movement through this dropbox. According to him, the initiation like this needs to be arranged in a national policy.

This was disclosed by the owner of Mengani coffee processing factory, Hendarto Setyobudi. In the era of independence, the coffee plantation dedicated for export reached 13,000 hectares. But after the independence in 1970, the coffee plantation area only reached 3,000-4,000 hectares. Then, during the reign of President Soeharto, there was an additional rehabilitation project for export crops introduced in 1979. Finally, the coffee plantation expanded to 9,000 hectares. Main buyer of Bali coffee is Japan. “So, President Soeharto has an idea to apply a strict standardized treatment with the financing of Bank Indonesia (BI),” he said in the visit of the Bali provincial government to Mengani on Tuesday (Sep. 5).

Bali coffee products are mostly produced in Kintamani reaching 70-80 percent. Two Japanese tourists injured by sharp objects

DENPASAR — Results of the external examination conducted by forensic medical installation of Sanglah Hospital on the body of Japanese tourists indicate there are several open injuries due to sharp objects.

The bodies sent by national SAR agency (Basarnas) underwent external examination on Tuesday (Sep. 5) at 11:45. On both victims’ body were only found some burns on the back with a grade of 50-60 percent.

This was conveyed by the Head of Forensic Medicine Installation of Sanglah Hospital, Dudut Rustyadi. On the body of the 73-year-old man was found several injuries. There are open injuries wrapping around the neck, sliced injuries and several stabbed injuries and burns. “And most of the burns are on the back of the body,” he added.

While on the body of the woman aged

70 years, there are several open injuries in the form of stabbed injuries on the neck and abdomen, and burns on the back. Based on the injuries found on both bodies, it can be determined that violence has been done more than once.

To prevent such accidents, the government of Karangasem through relevant agencies can fill the road marker as much as possible. So, the riders can be aware if the surrounding area is elevated. Moreover, it will be more dangerous for the people first going through the road.

“Last Friday night, an accident occurred at the scene as most road

users do not know if the road is elevated after installed with paving block,” he said.

YANGON - Myanmar’s Aung San Suu Kyi on Wednesday blamed “terrorists” for “a huge iceberg of misinformation” on the violence in Rakhine state but made no mention of the nearly 126,000 Rohingya Muslims who have fled over the border to Bangladesh since Aug. 25.

The leader of Buddhist-majority Myanmar has come under pressure from countries with Muslim populations over the crisis, and on Tuesday U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned of the risk of ethnic cleansing and regional destabilisation.

In a rare letter expressing concern that the violence that has raged for nearly two weeks in the northwestern state could spiral into a “humanitarian catastrophe”, Guterres urged the U.N. Security Council to press for restraint and calm.

Suu Kyi spoke by telephone on Tuesday with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, who has pressed world leaders to do more to help a population of roughly 1.1 million he says are facing genocide.

Putin says progress on N.Korea impossible without dialogue

VLADIVOSTOK - Resolving the North Korean nuclear crisis is impossible with sanctions and pressure alone, Russian President Vladimir Putin said after meeting his South Korean counterpart on Wednesday, again urging dialogue to achieve progress.

Putin met Moon Jae-in on the sidelines of an economic summit in the far eastern Russian city of Vladivostok amid mounting international concerns that their shared neighbour plans more weapons tests, possibly a long-range missile launch ahead of a key weekend anniversary.

Putin denounced Pyongyang’s sixth and largest nuclear bomb test on Sunday, saying Russia did not recognise North Korea’s nuclear status.

“Pyongyang’s missile and nuclear programme is a crude violation of UN Security Council resolutions, undermines the non-

proliferation regime and creates a threat to the security of northeastern Asia,” Putin said at a joint news conference.

“At the same time, it is clear that it is impossible to resolve the problem of the Korean peninsula only by sanctions and pressure,” he said.

No headway could be made without political and diplomatic tools, Putin said.

South Korea’s Moon, who came to power earlier this year advocating a policy of pursuing engagement with Pyongyang, has come under increasing pressure to take a harder line on North Korea.

He and Putin “shared the understanding that resolving the North Korean issue is top priority”, Moon told reporters.

Moon has asked the United Nations to consider tough new sanctions on North Korea after the latest nuclear test. He said on Wednesday

“China expresses serious concern over the relevant movements,” Geng said.

HONG KONG/SAO PAULO - China Merchants Port Holdings Co Ltd agreed to buy 90 percent of TCP Participações SA, Brazil’s most profitable port terminal, for about 2.9 billion reais ($924 million), a sign of growing interest in assets across Latin America’s No. 1 economy.

China Merchants said in a statement on Monday that it bought the stake from an investment vehicle led by Advent International Corp and other partners including Soifer, Pattac Empreendimentos SA and Grup Maritim TCB SL. The remaining 10 percent stake in TCP will be held by Soifer, Pattac and another partner.

Based in the City of Curitiba, TCP operates the container terminal concession in Paranaguá, Brazil’s No. 2 container terminal.

The deal is conditional on antitrust and regulatory approval, the statement said.

According to two people with knowledge of the deal, China Merchants’s bid valued TCP at 14.3 times annual earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization, topping estimates of a multiple around 13 times EBITDA that Reuters reported on April 19.

“The era of cheap money in Europe should come to an end - despite the strong euro,” Cryan told a room full of bankers in Frankfurt on Wednesday, a day before the ECB’s governors meet to discuss policy.

Low interest rates, money printing and a penalty charge for hoarding cash have been at the heart of attempts by the central bank to reinvigorate the 19-country euro zone economy in the wake of the 2008-09 financial crisis.

But the policy, which has seen the ECB print more than 2 trillion euros ($2.4 trillion) so far, has been politically divisive, prompting fierce criticism from famously thrifty Germans.

It has also imposed a heavy cost on still fragile banks, turning deposits into a hot potato that many would rather avoid so as not to pay charges to their central bank for storing them.

The head of Germany’s largest commercial bank warned of the fallout from cheap money, cautioning against using the strong euro as a justification for printing more. “We are now seeing signs of bubbles in more and more parts of the capital market,” he said.

FRANKFURT TO WIN Cryan also said Frankfurt was the most natural location as a financial hub as banks move from London after Britain’s decision to

leave the European Union - ahead of Paris, Dublin and Amsterdam.

“There is only one European city which can fulfil these requirements and that city is Frankfurt,” he said, pointing to Frankfurt’s supervisory authorities, law firms, consultancies and airport.

Britain’s planned departure from the EU has prompted banks and investors in London to examine other cities to keep a foothold in the bloc, allowing them to sell across the continent without additional costs or trade hurdles after Brexit.

Frankfurt and Dublin have emerged as the most popular centres.

This year marks 250 years since the Dutch colonised what is now known as Indonesia but was then refered to as the Dutch East Indies or the Spice Islands. One of the main spices that enriched the Dutch and allowed them to have an artistic and cultural renaissance was nutmeg.

Nutmeg was a very rare spice that was only grown in the Banda Islands and given its high demand and rarity had a price that was higher than gold. In 1667 the British traded the Banda Islands with the Dutch for the island of Manhattan and the rest -as they say, is history.

The Golden Fruit is a collaborative dance project that Ubit Iskandar has been working on for the last year and has presented versions of it in Amsterdam and elsewhere.

Ubit is of mixed heritage with parents from both Indonesia and the Netherlands and is interested in exploring the interactions between these two cultures.

As part of their Culture Exchange Program, on Sunday September 3rd, ARMA Museum hosted a presentation of the latest version of The Golden Fruit. This version was born out of a collaboration with Indonesian choreographer Aidil Usman who thought it would be interesting to focus not only on the Dutch coloniser who was trading nutmeg at the time, but more on his wife who was 30 years younger

than him and her interaction with the Banda Islanders.

In this highly poetic and moving dance piece, Dutch dancer Soetlin Jacobs, and Indonesian dancers Retna Tan, Maria Bemaletta Apilandi and Tebo Aumbara explored their own personal lineage as a starting point to interpret the story line. Searching into their own DNA for memories of the past, they brought these to life with dance movements that were evocative of distinctly Indonesian traditions and as well as the more stiff movements of the Dutch.

The duet between the Dutch dancer and one of the Indonesian dancers expressed both the synchronicity and harmony between the two as well as a kind distinct difference yielding a mesmerizing flow of dynamic movements.

Trump ends ‘Dreamer’ immigration program, places onus on Congress

WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump on Tuesday scrapped an Obama-era program that protects from deportation immigrants brought illegally into the United States as children, delaying implementation until March and giving a gridlocked Congress six months to decide the fate of almost 800,000 young people.

As the so-called Dreamers who have benefited from the five-year-old program were plunged into uncertainty, business and religious leaders, mayors, governors, Democratic lawmakers, unions, civil liberties advocates and former Democratic President Barack Obama all condemned Trump’s move.

The action was announced not by Trump but by Jeff Sessions, his attorney general, who called the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program an unconstitutional overreach by Obama. There will be an “orderly, lawful wind-down,” Sessions said.

Trump later issued a written statement saying that “I do not favor punishing children, most of whom are now adults, for the actions of their parents. But we must also recognize that we are (a) nation of opportunity because we are a nation of laws.”

Trump and Sessions offered no details of the type of legislation they would want to see, and Trump’s spokeswoman offered only a broad outline.

“I have a love for these people (DACA recipients), and hopefully now Congress will be able to help them and do it properly,” Trump later told reporters at the White House, adding: “I think it’s going to work out very well.”

Since Trump took office in January, Congress has been unable to pass any major legislation, most notably failing on a healthcare overhaul, and lawmakers have been bitterly divided over immigration in the past.

“President Trump’s decision to end DACA is a deeply shameful act of political cowardice and a despicable assault on innocent young people in communities across America,” said Nancy Pelosi, the top Democrat in the House of Representatives.

The Democratic attorney general of Massachusetts, Maura Healey, said a coalition of states planned to file suit in the coming days to defend DACA, and one advocacy group announced its own legal action.

“This is a sad day for our country,” added Facebook Inc founder Mark Zuckerberg. “The decision to end DACA is not just wrong. It is particularly cruel to offer young people the American Dream, encourage them to come out of the shadows and trust our government, and then punish them for it.” (rtr)

Cambodia says opposition party could be barred from election

PHNOM PENH - Cambodia’s government has raised the possibility that the main opposition party could be ruled out of elections if it does not replace its leader, Kem Sokha, who has been charged with treason.

The opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) has said it will not replace its leader and the comments reinforced its fears that Prime Minister Hun Sen plans to cripple it before next year’s elections.

The arrest of Kem Sokha on Sunday drew Western condemnation and marked an escalation in a crackdown on critics of Hun Sen, who has ruled for 30 years and could face possibly his toughest electoral challenge from the CNRP next year.

“They have to appoint an acting president,” government spokesman Phay Siphan told Reuters on Tuesday.

“If they don’t comply with the law, they will not exist and have no right to political activity... It’s their choice, not my choice.”

Kem Sokha’s daughter, Kem Monovithya, who is also a party official, said the party would not appoint a new leader. Kem Sokha was only named in February after his predecessor resigned in fear the party would be banned if he stayed on.

“The ruling party can drop their divide-and-conquer plan now,” she said.

Opposition officials accuse Hun Sen of trying to weaken or destroy the party ahead of the election, after it did well in June local elections, in which it nonetheless came well behind

Hun Sen’s Cambodia People’s Party.

Hun Sen, one of Asia’s longest serving rulers, said on Wednesday there could be more arrests after “the act of treason” and it had reinforced the need for him to stay in office.

“I’ve decided to continue my work - not less than 10 years more,” he told garment factory workers, jabbing his finger in the air for emphasis.

Kem Sokha became leader after opposition veteran Sam Rainsy resigned because of a new law that forbids any party having a leader who is found guilty of a crime.

Sam Rainsy fled into exile to avoid a defamation conviction he says was political.

Cambodian law says a political party has 90 days to replace a president if he or she dies, resigns or is convicted of an offence.

Western countries have condemned the arrest of Kem Sokha and a crackdown on critics of Hun Sen, including independent media.

“We don’t care about people outside,” Phay Siphan said. “We care about our national security. We don’t belong to anyone.”

China, Hun Sen’s close ally, has voiced support for Cambodia on steps to ensure its security.

Kem Sokha was formally charged with treason on Tuesday.

His lawyers have dismissed the evidence presented against him so far - a video publicly available since 2013 - in which he tells supporters he is getting support and advice from Americans for the campaign to win elections. (rtr)

Indonesia, Singapore enhance trust to mark 50th anniversary of bilateral ties

JAKARTA - Indonesia and Singapore will strengthen bilateral ties and enhance trust to commemorate the 50th anniversary of bilateral relations between the two neighboring countries. “We will increase bilateral ties, and the theme of the relations is boosting trust between the two countries,” Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung stated here, Tuesday.

Mutual trust between Indonesia and Singapore has been improving and getting better with time, he noted. “Hence, trust between the two immediate neighboring countries is needed,” he emphasized.

P r e s i d e n t J o k o Wi d o d o (Jokowi) is on a visit to Singapore on September 6-7, 2017, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of bilateral relations between Indonesia and Singapore, he explained.

Singapore is the most visited country by Indonesians, he remarked. Several activities have been readied for the celebration of the 50th anniversary. The two countries will strengthen bilateral ties in the economic field, particularly for the development of the digital economy, which is

growing.

Several outdoor activities involving Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and President Jokowi will be held, he said.

The two leaders will discuss issues related to bilateral cooperation and the latest regional and international developments, including in the Korean Peninsula.

Singapore is one of the largest investors in Indonesia. Hence, Indonesia has offered a conducive investment climate for the neighboring country.

“Not only Singapore but a similar facility has also been offered to other countries, as Indonesia needs huge foreign direct investment to realize better quality of economic growth,” he said.

Jokowi and Loong are also expected to discuss development of the Kendal Industrial Area, which was inaugurated in Nov 2016.

JAKARTA - Thousands of Indonesians, led

by Islamist groups, held a rally near the Myanmar embassy in Jakarta on Wednesday to protest against the treatment of Rohingya Muslims and demand the snapping of ties between the two countries. Indonesia has the world’s largest population of Muslims and there have been several anti-Myanmar protests in Jakarta and the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur over the treatment of Buddhist-majority Myanmar’s roughly 1.1 million Rohingyas.

Roads were blocked and barbed wire barriers put up around the embassy, in a leafy district of the capital, which was patrolled by police in riot gear who set up water cannons. Some protesters chanted “Allahu Akbar” (God is Greatest), while others shouted slogans such as “Slaughter Myanmar” and “Burn the embassy”.

Buddhists should respect Muslims in Myanmar in the same way that Muslims respected Buddhists in Indonesia, one speaker told the crowd, using a loud-hailer.

Almost 125,000 Rohingyas have been forced to flee

clashes between Rohingya insurgents and the army in Myanmar’s northwestern state of Rakhine. Tens of thousands have crossed the border into neighbouring Bangladesh.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi met Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi and top security officials this week to urge a halt to the bloodshed. Marsudi also visited Dhaka, capital of Bangladesh on Tuesday, to offer help in tackling the crisis. Some protesters at the Jakarta rally called for the expulsion of the Myanmar ambassador over the issue, as well as for diplomatic ties between the two countries to be severed.

Myanmar embassy staff would be safe, however, said a foreign ministry spokesman, Armanatha Nasir.

“It is the responsibility of the host countries to ensure the safety of all diplomatic missions and their personnel,” the spokesman said. “Indonesia takes this responsibility seriously.” At the weekend, a petrol bomb was thrown at the embassy causing a small fire.

Indonesian police have also pledged to bar Islamist groups from staging a rally on Friday at the Borobudur Buddhist temple in central Java to protest against the treatment of Myanmar’s Rohingya Muslims. (rtr)

Police seize 134 kilograms of crystal meth in N Sumatra MEDAN - Police in North Sumatra province have seized 134 kilograms of crystal meth and arrested two drug suspects.

One of the suspects, identified by his initials as SPD, was arrested early last Thursday (Aug 31) at Platina Street in Medan, capital of North Sumatra province, spokesperson of the North Sumatra Provincial Police Senior Commissioner Rina Sari Ginting stated here on Tuesday.

During the raid, the police seized 134 packages of crystal meth believed to have been smuggled by a drug syndicate from Malaysia, she noted. It is believed that the drug syndicate has circulation networks in Aceh, Medan, and Jakarta.

Based on the results of the investigation into SPD, the police found that the 41-year old man acted as a courier who received and kept the crystal meth, she added.

The police later arrested a member of the drug syndicate, identified by his initials as AK, at Listrik Street in Medan at around 09.00 a.m. on Sunday (Sept 3), she revealed.

The 34-year old AK also played a role as a courier who brought the crystal meth from Aceh to Medan, she explained. (ant)

Turkey revive World Cup prospects with 1-0 win over Croatia

ISTANBUL - A goal from Cenk Tosun earned Turkey a 1-0 win over Croatia on Tuesday to revive his country’s prospects of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup and deal a blow to the group leaders with two games left to play.

The Turkish striker broke the deadlock in the 75th minute when Croatian keeper Danijel Subasic could only push a shot from Oguzhan Ozyakup away towards the feet of Tosun who fired the ball into the net.

Turkey’s prospects had been dented on Saturday when they lost 2-0 to Ukraine but they are back in contention after the win in front of a raucous home crowd in the northwestern Turkish city of Eskisehir.

Chances fell to both teams in an attacking opening spell,

with Croatia almost scoring from a Luka Modric free kick in the 10th minute that ricocheted of Burak Yilmaz’s shoulder and onto the post as he tried to clear.

SEOUL - With two scoreless draws to round out qualifying, South Korea’s advance to the World Cup was more of a stumble over the line than a confident march to Russia but it was enough for relieved coach Shin Tae-yong to claim mission accomplished. Turkey revive World Cup prospects with 1-0 win over Croatia

ISTANBUL - A goal from Cenk Tosun earned Turkey a 1-0 win over Croatia on Tuesday to revive his country’s prospects of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup and deal a blow to the group leaders with two games left to play.

The Turkish striker broke the deadlock in the 75th minute when Croatian keeper Danijel Subasic could only push a shot from Oguzhan Ozyakup away towards the feet of Tosun who fired the ball into the net.

Turkey’s prospects had been dented on Saturday when they lost 2-0 to Ukraine but they are back in contention after the win in front of a raucous home crowd in the northwestern Turkish city of Eskisehir.

Chances fell to both teams in an attacking opening spell,

with Croatia almost scoring from a Luka Modric free kick in the 10th minute that ricocheted of Burak Yilmaz’s shoulder and onto the post as he tried to clear.

A minute later Turkey had a good opportunity to take the lead when Arda Turan crossed to Tosun, but he fired the ball wide from close range.

SEOUL - With two scoreless draws to round out qualifying, South Korea’s advance to the World Cup was more of a stumble over the line than a confident march to Russia but it was enough for relieved coach Shin Tae-yong to claim mission accomplished. Under fire after being held 0-0 by 10-man Iran at home last week, South Korea responded with another goalless stalemate away to Uzbekistan on Tuesday.

Even then, they had to rely on already-qualified Iran to stave off a desperate Syria in their 2-2 draw in Tehran to be assured of nabbing the second automatic berth to Russia and secure a ninth straight appearance at the World Cup finals.

The performances may do little to win over skeptics, but Shin said fans had yet to see the real South Korea.

“We will prepare for the World Cup thoroughly,” he said in comments published by Yonhap on Wednesday. “I’m a man who likes to play an attacking football. People will find out about South Korea’s true football power at the World Cup.” An assistant to Uli Stielike, former Olympic coach Shin replaced the German for the final two matches of qualifying after he was sacked in June following a disappointing run of results.

Against Uzbekistan, forward Son Heung-min, who was prolific last season for Tottenham Hotspur, hit the woodwork but was denied a goal for a seventh straight match in qualifying. “I know many people expected to me to score goals, but I wasn’t good enough,” Son said. “I learned again that the Asian qualification isn’t easy. Late Wood goal earns U.S. 1-1 draw with Honduras A late equaliser from substitute Bobby Wood earned the United States a valuable point after a 1-1 draw against Honduras in a World Cup qualifier in San Pedro Sula on Tuesday. A well-taken first half goal from Honduras midfielder Romell Quioto gave the hosts a chance to earn all three points in front of an enthusiastic crowd on a typically humid afternoon at the Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano.

Striker Wood, however, popped up in the 85th minute to poke the ball home from close range in a congested box after Honduras goalkeeper Luis Lopez had done well to parry a free kick.

Trump ends ‘Dreamer’ immigration program, places onus on Congress

WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump on Tuesday scrapped an Obama-era program that protects from deportation immigrants brought illegally into the United States as children, delaying implementation until March and giving a gridlocked Congress six months to decide the fate of almost 800,000 young people.

As the so-called Dreamers who have benefited from the five-year-old program were plunged into uncertainty, business and religious leaders, mayors, governors, Democratic lawmakers, unions, civil liberties advocates and former Democratic President Barack Obama all condemned Trump’s move.

The action was announced not by Trump but by Jeff Sessions, his attorney general, who called the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program an unconstitutional overreach by Obama. There will be an “orderly, lawful wind-down,” Sessions said.

Trump later issued a written statement saying that “I do not favor punishing children, most of whom are now adults, for the actions of their parents. But we must also recognize that we are (a) nation of opportunity because we are a nation of laws.”

He denounced Obama’s program as an “amnestyfirst approach” toward illegal immigrants and pressed his nationalist “America First” message, saying that despite concerns voiced by his critics about the fate of the Dreamers, “Above all else, we must remember

Trump and Sessions offered no details of the type of legislation they would want to see, and Trump’s spokeswoman offered only a broad outline.

“I have a love for these people (DACA recipients), and hopefully now Congress will be able to help them and do it properly,” Trump later told reporters at the White House, adding: “I think it’s going to work out very well.”

Since Trump took office in January, Congress has been unable to pass any major legislation, most notably failing on a healthcare overhaul, and lawmakers have been bitterly divided over immigration in the past.

“President Trump’s decision to end DACA is a deeply shameful act of political cowardice and a despicable assault on innocent young people in communities across America,” said Nancy Pelosi, the top Democrat in the House of Representatives.

The Democratic attorney general of Massachusetts, Maura Healey, said a coalition of states planned to file suit in the coming days to defend DACA, and one advocacy group announced its own legal action.

“This is a sad day for our country,” added Facebook Inc founder Mark Zuckerberg. “The decision to end DACA is not just wrong. It is particularly cruel to offer young people the American Dream, encourage them to come out of the shadows and trust our government, and then punish them for it.” (rtr)

Cambodia says opposition party could be barred from election

PHNOM PENH - Cambodia’s government has raised the possibility that the main opposition party could be ruled out of elections if it does not replace its leader, Kem Sokha, who has been charged with treason.

The opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) has said it will not replace its leader and the comments reinforced its fears that Prime Minister Hun Sen plans to cripple it before next year’s elections.

The arrest of Kem Sokha on Sunday drew Western condemnation and marked an escalation in a crackdown on critics of Hun Sen, who has ruled for 30 years and could face possibly his toughest electoral challenge from the CNRP next year.

“They have to appoint an acting president,” government spokesman Phay Siphan told Reuters on Tuesday.

“If they don’t comply with the law, they will not exist and have no right to political activity... It’s their choice, not my choice.”

Kem Sokha’s daughter, Kem Monovithya, who is also a party official, said the party would not appoint a new leader. Kem Sokha was only named in February after his predecessor resigned in fear the party would be banned if he stayed on.

“The ruling party can drop their divide-and-conquer plan now,” she said.

Hun Sen, one of Asia’s longest serving rulers, said on Wednesday there could be more arrests after “the act of treason” and it had reinforced the need for him to stay in office.

“I’ve decided to continue my work - not less than 10 years more,” he told garment factory workers, jabbing his finger in the air for emphasis.

Kem Sokha became leader after opposition veteran Sam Rainsy resigned because of a new law that forbids any party having a leader who is found guilty of a crime.

Sam Rainsy fled into exile to avoid a defamation conviction he says was political.

Cambodian law says a political party has 90 days to replace a president if he or she dies, resigns or is convicted of an offence.

Western countries have condemned the arrest of Kem Sokha and a crackdown on critics of Hun Sen, including independent media.

“We don’t care about people outside,” Phay Siphan said. “We care about our national security. We don’t belong to anyone.”

China, Hun Sen’s close ally, has voiced support for Cambodia on steps to ensure its security.

Kem Sokha was formally charged with treason on Tuesday.

His lawyers have dismissed the evidence presented against him so far - a video publicly available since 2013 - in which he tells supporters he is getting support and advice from Americans for the campaign to win elections. (rtr)

Indonesia, Singapore enhance trust to mark 50th anniversary of bilateral ties

JAKARTA - Indonesia and Singapore will strengthen bilateral ties and enhance trust to commemorate the 50th anniversary of bilateral relations between the two neighboring countries. “We will increase bilateral ties, and the theme of the relations is boosting trust between the two countries,” Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung stated here, Tuesday.

Mutual trust between Indonesia and Singapore has been improving and getting better with time, he noted. “Hence, trust between the two immediate neighboring countries is needed,” he emphasized.

P r e s i d e n t J o k o Wi d o d o (Jokowi) is on a visit to Singapore on September 6-7, 2017, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of bilateral relations between Indonesia and Singapore, he explained.

Singapore is one of the largest investors in Indonesia. Hence, Indonesia has offered a conducive investment climate for the neighboring country.

JAKARTA - Thousands of Indonesians, led

by Islamist groups, held a rally near the Myanmar embassy in Jakarta on Wednesday to protest against the treatment of Rohingya Muslims and demand the snapping of ties between the two countries. Indonesia has the world’s largest population of Muslims and there have been several anti-Myanmar protests in Jakarta and the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur over the treatment of Buddhist-majority Myanmar’s roughly 1.1 million Rohingyas.

Roads were blocked and barbed wire barriers put up around the embassy, in a leafy district of the capital, which was patrolled by police in riot gear who set up water cannons. Some protesters chanted “Allahu Akbar” (God is Greatest), while others shouted slogans such as “Slaughter Myanmar” and “Burn the embassy”.

Buddhists should respect Muslims in Myanmar in the same way that Muslims respected Buddhists in Indonesia, one speaker told the crowd, using a loud-hailer.

Almost 125,000 Rohingyas have been forced to flee

clashes between Rohingya insurgents and the army in Myanmar’s northwestern state of Rakhine. Tens of thousands have crossed the border into neighbouring Bangladesh.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi met Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi and top security officials this week to urge a halt to the bloodshed. Marsudi also visited Dhaka, capital of Bangladesh on Tuesday, to offer help in tackling the crisis. Some protesters at the Jakarta rally called for the expulsion of the Myanmar ambassador over the issue, as well as for diplomatic ties between the two countries to be severed.

Myanmar embassy staff would be safe, however, said a foreign ministry spokesman, Armanatha Nasir.

“It is the responsibility of the host countries to ensure the safety of all diplomatic missions and their personnel,” the spokesman said. “Indonesia takes this responsibility seriously.” At the weekend, a petrol bomb was thrown at the embassy causing a small fire.

Indonesian police have also pledged to bar Islamist groups from staging a rally on Friday at the Borobudur Buddhist temple in central Java to protest against the treatment of Myanmar’s Rohingya Muslims. (rtr)

Police seize 134 kilograms of crystal meth in N Sumatra MEDAN - Police in North Sumatra province have seized 134 kilograms of crystal meth and arrested two drug suspects.

One of the suspects, identified by his initials as SPD, was arrested early last Thursday (Aug 31) at Platina Street in Medan, capital of North Sumatra province, spokesperson of the North Sumatra Provincial Police Senior Commissioner Rina Sari Ginting stated here on Tuesday.

During the raid, the police seized 134 packages of crystal meth believed to have been smuggled by a drug syndicate from Malaysia, she noted. It is believed that the drug syndicate has circulation networks in Aceh, Medan, and Jakarta.

Based on the results of the investigation into SPD, the police found that the 41-year old man acted as a courier who received and kept the crystal meth, she added.

The police later arrested a member of the drug syndicate, identified by his initials as AK, at Listrik Street in Medan at around 09.00 a.m. on Sunday (Sept 3), she revealed.

The 34-year old AK also played a role as a courier who brought the crystal meth from Aceh to Medan, she explained. (ant)

HONG KONG/SAO PAULO - China Merchants Port Holdings Co Ltd agreed to buy 90 percent of TCP Participações SA, Brazil’s most profitable port terminal, for about 2.9 billion reais ($924 million), a sign of growing interest in assets across Latin America’s No. 1 economy.

China Merchants said in a statement on Monday that it bought the stake from an investment vehicle led by Advent International Corp and other partners including Soifer, Pattac Empreendimentos SA and Grup Maritim TCB SL. The remaining 10 percent stake in TCP will be held by Soifer, Pattac and another partner.

Based in the City of Curitiba, TCP operates the container terminal concession in Paranaguá, Brazil’s No. 2 container terminal.

The deal is conditional on antitrust and regulatory approval, the statement said.

According to two people with knowledge of the deal, China Merchants’s bid valued TCP at 14.3 times annual earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization, topping estimates of a multiple around 13 times EBITDA that Reuters reported on April 19.

“The era of cheap money in Europe should come to an end - despite the strong euro,” Cryan told a room full of bankers in Frankfurt on Wednesday, a day before the ECB’s governors meet to discuss policy.

Low interest rates, money printing and a penalty charge for hoarding cash have been at the heart of attempts by the central bank to reinvigorate the 19-country euro zone economy in the wake of the 2008-09 financial crisis.

But the policy, which has seen the ECB print more than 2 trillion euros ($2.4 trillion) so far, has been politically divisive, prompting fierce criticism from famously thrifty Germans.

It has also imposed a heavy cost on still fragile banks, turning deposits into a hot potato that many would rather avoid so as not to pay charges to their central bank for storing them.

The head of Germany’s largest commercial bank warned of the fallout from cheap money, cautioning against using the strong euro as a justification for printing more. “We are now seeing signs of bubbles in more and more parts of the capital market,” he said.

FRANKFURT TO WIN Cryan also said Frankfurt was the most natural location as a financial hub as banks move from London after Britain’s decision to

leave the European Union - ahead of Paris, Dublin and Amsterdam.

“There is only one European city which can fulfil these requirements and that city is Frankfurt,” he said, pointing to Frankfurt’s supervisory authorities, law firms, consultancies and airport.

Britain’s planned departure from the EU has prompted banks and investors in London to examine other cities to keep a foothold in the bloc, allowing them to sell across the continent without additional costs or trade hurdles after Brexit.

Frankfurt and Dublin have emerged as the most popular centres.

This year marks 250 years since the Dutch colonised what is now known as Indonesia but was then refered to as the Dutch East Indies or the Spice Islands. One of the main spices that enriched the Dutch and allowed them to have an artistic and cultural renaissance was nutmeg.

Nutmeg was a very rare spice that was only grown in the Banda Islands and given its high demand and rarity had a price that was higher than gold. In 1667 the British traded the Banda Islands with the Dutch for the island of Manhattan and the rest -as they say, is history.

The Golden Fruit is a collaborative dance project that Ubit Iskandar has been working on for the last year and has presented versions of it in Amsterdam and elsewhere.

Ubit is of mixed heritage with parents from both Indonesia and the Netherlands and is interested in exploring the interactions between these two cultures.

As part of their Culture Exchange Program, on Sunday September 3rd, ARMA Museum hosted a presentation of the latest version of The Golden Fruit. This version was born out of a collaboration with Indonesian choreographer Aidil Usman who thought it would be interesting to focus not only on the Dutch coloniser who was trading nutmeg at the time, but more on his wife who was 30 years younger

than him and her interaction with the Banda Islanders.

In this highly poetic and moving dance piece, Dutch dancer Soetlin Jacobs, and Indonesian dancers Retna Tan, Maria Bemaletta Apilandi and Tebo Aumbara explored their own personal lineage as a starting point to interpret the story line. Searching into their own DNA for memories of the past, they brought these to life with dance movements that were evocative of distinctly Indonesian traditions and as well as the more stiff movements of the Dutch.

The duet between the Dutch dancer and one of the Indonesian dancers expressed both the synchronicity and harmony between the two as well as a kind distinct difference yielding a mesmerizing flow of dynamic movements.

Two Japanese tourists injured by sharp objects

DENPASAR — Results of the external examination conducted by forensic medical installation of Sanglah Hospital on the body of Japanese tourists indicate there are several open injuries due to sharp objects.

The bodies sent by national SAR agency (Basarnas) underwent external examination on Tuesday (Sep. 5) at 11:45. On both victims’ body were only found some burns on the back with a grade of 50-60 percent.

This was conveyed by the Head of Forensic Medicine Installation of Sanglah Hospital, Dudut Rustyadi. On the body of the 73-year-old man was found several injuries. There are open injuries wrapping around the neck, sliced injuries and several stabbed injuries and burns. “And most of the burns are on the back of the body,” he added.

While on the body of the woman aged

70 years, there are several open injuries in the form of stabbed injuries on the neck and abdomen, and burns on the back. Based on the injuries found on both bodies, it can be determined that violence has been done more than once.

To prevent such accidents, the government of Karangasem through relevant agencies can fill the road marker as much as possible. So, the riders can be aware if the surrounding area is elevated. Moreover, it will be more dangerous for the people first going through the road.

“Last Friday night, an accident occurred at the scene as most road

users do not know if the road is elevated after installed with paving block,” he said.

He hoped the agency in charge can evaluate and improve the road condition and then address it.

Related to this issue, the Head of Karangasem Culture Agency, Putu Arnawa, also received some information if accident frequently occurred at the location. Myanmar’s Suu Kyi denounces terrorists, silent on Rohingya exodus

YANGON - Myanmar’s Aung San Suu Kyi on Wednesday blamed “terrorists” for “a huge iceberg of misinformation” on the violence in Rakhine state but made no mention of the nearly 126,000 Rohingya Muslims who have fled over the border to Bangladesh since Aug. 25.

The leader of Buddhist-majority Myanmar has come under pressure from countries with Muslim populations over the crisis, and on Tuesday U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned of the risk of ethnic cleansing and regional destabilisation.

In a rare letter expressing concern that the violence that has raged for nearly two weeks in the northwestern state could spiral into a “humanitarian catastrophe”, Guterres urged the U.N. Security Council to press for restraint and calm.

Suu Kyi spoke by telephone on Tuesday with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, who has pressed world leaders to do more to help a population of roughly 1.1 million he says are facing genocide.

In a statement issued by her office on Facebook, Suu Kyi said the government had “already started defending all the people in Rakhine in the best way possible” and warned against misinformation that could mar relations with other countries.

Putin says progress on N.Korea impossible without dialogue

VLADIVOSTOK - Resolving the North Korean nuclear crisis is impossible with sanctions and pressure alone, Russian President Vladimir Putin said after meeting his South Korean counterpart on Wednesday, again urging dialogue to achieve progress.

Putin met Moon Jae-in on the sidelines of an economic summit in the far eastern Russian city of Vladivostok amid mounting international concerns that their shared neighbour plans more weapons tests, possibly a long-range missile launch ahead of a key weekend anniversary.

Putin denounced Pyongyang’s sixth and largest nuclear bomb test on Sunday, saying Russia did not recognise North Korea’s nuclear status.

“Pyongyang’s missile and nuclear programme is a crude violation of UN Security Council resolutions, undermines the non-

proliferation regime and creates a threat to the security of northeastern Asia,” Putin said at a joint news conference.

“At the same time, it is clear that it is impossible to resolve the problem of the Korean peninsula only by sanctions and pressure,” he said.

No headway could be made without political and diplomatic tools, Putin said.

South Korea’s Moon, who came to power earlier this year advocating a policy of pursuing engagement with Pyongyang, has come under increasing pressure to take a harder line on North Korea.

He and Putin “shared the understanding that resolving the North Korean issue is top priority”, Moon told reporters.

Moon has asked the United Nations to consider tough new sanctions on North Korea after the latest nuclear test. He said on Wednesday

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang reiterated China’s opposition to the THAAD system at a briefing in Beijing, saying it could only “severely damage” regional security and raise “tensions and antagonism”.

“China expresses serious concern over the relevant movements,” Geng said.

“China strongly urges the United States and South Korea to pay attention to China and other regional nations’ security interests and concerns, immediately halt the progress of the relevant deployment, and remove the relevant equipment,” he said. (rtr)

Many women have been reluctant to use hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for menopause symptoms since 2002.

Vaginal estrogen not tied to cancer or heart disease risks

LOS ANGELES - Using vaginally applied estrogen to ease menopause symptoms likely doesn’t increase a woman’s risk of heart disease or certain cancers, a U.S. study suggests.

Many women have been reluctant to use hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for menopause symptoms since 2002, when the federally funded Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) study linked pills containing man-made versions of the female hormones estrogen and progestin to an increased risk for breast cancer, heart attacks and strokes. Some women have also been reluctant to use vaginally applied estrogens, which can ease symptoms like dryness and painful intercourse.

For the current study, researchers examined data on 45,663 women in the WHI study who didn’t take HRT pills. After an average follow-up of more than six years, there wasn’t a meaningful difference in the odds of cancer, stroke or blood clots based on whether or not women used vaginal estrogen.

“The results of the study suggest that the use of vaginal estrogen may not actually carry the same health risks as the use of estrogen pills,” said lead study author Dr. Carolyn Crandall of the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles.

“These results are reassuring,” Crandall said by email.

Women go through menopause when they stop menstruating, typically between ages 45 and 55. As the ovaries curb production of the hormones estrogen and progesterone in the years leading up to menopause and afterward, women can experience symptoms ranging from irregular periods and vaginal dryness to mood swings and insomnia.

Study participants who used vaginal estrogen were less likely to be black or African-American, Hispanic, current smokers, diabetic or obese. They were also more likely to be white and college graduates with

household income of more than $100,000 a year.

Compared with women who didn’t use vaginal estrogen, women who did had a 48 percent lower risk of heart disease and 60 percent lower odds of hip fractures, researchers report in Menopause.

When researchers looked just at women who still had a uterus, the results looked even more favorable for vaginal estrogen users.

Among women who had not had their uterus removed, vaginal estrogen users were 61 percent less likely to have heart disease, and 60 percent less likely to have a hip fracture than women who didn’t use vaginal estrogen.

The study wasn’t a controlled experiment designed to prove whether or how vaginal estrogen might influence the odds of heart disease, cancer or other health problems.

Another limitation of the study is that researchers lacked data on different types of vaginal estrogen, so they couldn’t tell whether one form might be best for avoiding cancer or heart disease.

Even so, the findings should reassure women, said Dr. Michelle Warren, medical director of the Center for Menopause, Hormonal Disorders and Women’s Health in New York City.

“This shows that it is perfectly safe for any woman to take low-dose vaginal estrogen,” Warren, who wasn’t involved in the study, said by email.

Some women who have avoided vaginal estrogen because they thought it was just as risky as pills may now be able to get relief for previously untreated menopause symptoms, said Dr. Michael Thomas of the University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center in Ohio.

“A study like this allows women to safely use a form of estrogen that will help their (vaginal) symptoms,” Thomas, who wasn’t involved in the study, said by email. “They can have intercourse without pain and feel safe they are not risking their life.” (rtr)

For the study, researchers enrolled 78 gay and bisexual young men, ages 15 to 17, from six U.S. cities. The participants all tested negative for HIV at the start of the study, but were at high risk for an infection.

Participants received a counseling session about HIV risk, plus access to daily doses of PrEP for the next 48 weeks.

Overall, 47 participants completed the study.

Only three adverse events occurred that were possibly related to PrEP, the researchers found.

“I think the safety piece is important,” Hosek told Reuters Health. “It was well tolerated. We didn’t see many complaints about side effects. We did not see many adverse events.”

The researchers also didn’t find an increase in sexually risky behaviors over the study period.

Three young men did become infected with HIV, however.

Blood samples suggest they were taking less than two doses of PrEP each week at the time of infection.

The rate of HIV infection in the study was 6.4 cases per 100 people per year, which is about twice as high as the rate seen among men ages 18 to 22 years enrolled in a similar trial, the researchers write in JAMA Pediatrics. (rtr)

Coffee harvest failure in Bali reaches over 60 percent

Anti-HIV pill safe among gay, bisexual adolescent boys

CHICAGO - A pill that protects against the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) can be safely used by young men who have sex with men, according to a new study.

In a diverse group of teen boys at high risk for HIV infection, preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in the form of a pill that combines the drugs emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate was well tolerated, researchers found.

“I do hope clinicians increase their comfort with being able to provide PrEP to adolescents,” said lead author Sybil Hosek, a clinical psychologist and HIV researcher at Cook County Health and Hospitals System’s Stroger Hospital in Chicago.

She hopes the new data will be submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and will encourage the agency to approve the pill for use by younger people. The pill is currently approved for HIV prevention in adults.

The drug was first approved by the FDA in 2012 as Truvada, which was marketed by Gilead.

Trials found that the drug reduced the risk of HIV infection by over 90 percent.

But little evidence was collected on its use among gay and bisexual adolescent males, who are among those most at risk for HIV infection.

All walks of life responsible for environmental issues mainly waste

MANGUPURA - Environmental issues, especially the plastic waste problem, and packaging, actually do not only become the responsibility of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK).

However, in this case it becomes the responsible holder in national level.

The main responsibility in this case lies in all walks of life, whether they are entrepreneurs, religious leaders, community figures, the community itself or so forth. This was confirmed by Director of Waste Management, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, R. Sudirman, in a working visit to the dropbox location as a collection center for carton packaging at Hypermart Bali Mall Galleria, on Tuesday (Sep. 5).

As an environmental coach, especially waste management, his directorate strongly supports the garbage collection movement through this dropbox. According to him, the initiation like this needs to be arranged in a national policy.

He realized that such steps do not directly make the waste problem resolved. However, this is the step to educate the public in order to be able to sort out packaging waste.

He realized that in the past the community used to throw used packs of food in any place. However, the current food packaging has a selling value because it can be processed again. “Education is expensive, and with such a program, at least the education in the community will increase,” he said.

In the meantime, the Deputy of Maritime Sovereignty Affairs, Coordinating Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Dr. Arif Havas Oegroseno, previously said the problem of waste management is currently

the authority of district management. But admittedly, sometimes the budget is not sufficient. So, the standard of waste management has not met the world standard and there is always a gap.

“It can be seen from the bad garbage collection, bad sorting and bad treatments. As a result, lots of garbage cannot be processed and leaked into the river and the sea.

From the data available, the use of plastic in Indonesia per year is recorded to reach 4.5 million tons,” he concluded.

The joint visit of the Packaging and Recycling Alliance for Indonesia Sustainable Environment (PRAISE) is a follow up to dropbox program initiated by Tetra Pak Indonesia since 2013 in Jakarta and 2015 in Bali is conducted with ecoBali Recycling. Tetra Pak Indonesia has made various efforts towards innovative packaging practices in line with its commitment to educating consumers to conduct waste collection practices with sustainable environmental preservation patterns.

Procurement of this dropbox is a pilot project of the waste management group within the KLHK to welcome the 2020 garbage-free Indonesia with Danone launched in February 2017. The KLHK as the regulator directly appreciated to the initiative of collecting used drink carton packaging by Tetra Pak Indonesia as the realization for the application of industrial and consumer waste management to fulfill the Law No.18/2008 and Government Regulation No.81/2012.

The dropbox facility will also be expanded in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok and Bekasi following the successful implementation in Bali. (kmb23)

BANGLI - Condition of coffee plantations in Bali is now apprehensive. This year, the harvest failure of coffee plantation shows a decline of 60 percent. The massive harvest supposed to happen from last May to September can only produce until June. It is very visible from the Mengani coffee processing factory having no coffee at all to be processed.

This was disclosed by the owner of Mengani coffee processing factory, Hendarto Setyobudi. In the era of independence, the coffee plantation dedicated for export reached 13,000 hectares. But after the independence in 1970, the coffee plantation area only reached 3,000-4,000 hectares. Then, during the reign of President Soeharto, there was an additional rehabilitation project for export crops introduced in 1979. Finally, the coffee plantation expanded to 9,000 hectares. Main buyer of Bali coffee is Japan. “So, President Soeharto has an idea to apply a strict standardized treatment with the financing of Bank Indonesia (BI),” he said in the visit of the Bali provincial government to Mengani on Tuesday (Sep. 5).

Bali coffee products are mostly produced in Kintamani reaching 70-80 percent. In reality, the government Badung and Buleleng are now actively expanding their coffee plantation. “We are quite slow here and stagnant or even leaving behind. Coffee plantations are left to live as they are,” he explained.

Admittedly, coffee farmers in Kintamani indeed received assistance in the form of seed training, but considered less targeted. So, from year to year the

coffee harvest continues to decline. Nationally, it decreases by 55 percent, but according to him the crops fall by more than 60 percent. “It is worrisome even this becomes a disaster,” he said.

He confirmed Jokowi’s statement that Indonesia has lost one generation of farmers. On that account, the government is concerned about coffee in the hope that younger generation is interested in becoming farmers because coffee is identical to the young people. He who lived long in Bali sees the problem that coffee farmers never plant single variety. At least, farmers cultivate 5 to 6 varieties.

In addition, coffee farmers rarely take care of their coffee and allow them to grow as they do. Farmers also choose other profitable plants. There are farmers planting marigold, tangerine, vegetables and even choosing another profession namely becoming a tour guide. “Only a few villages that take care of their coffee plantation well, such as Ulian village, Kintamani. The others only depend on the above (the Creator),” he concluded.

Reluctance of farmers to cultivate coffee crops happens due to the low price of coffee bean being incomparable to their efforts. “Farmers are a bit lazy and lose their vivacity to grow coffee because people want to buy good coffee but at commercial prices.

Here is the constraint for all of us,” he said. However, the reason often expressed is the weather factor due to global warming.

Low-priced coffee can be seen from the coffee market on the Nasdaq stock exchange where it is only valued at 171 cents per pound, while the green bean at 100.75 cents per pound. (kmb42)

Due to huge waves, Waterblow Nusa Dua closed again

MANGUPURA - Since almost a month ago, the Waterblow Nusa Dua tourist area has been re-closed because of huge waves that can endanger visitors.

As a result, many tourists visiting the Peninsula Island, Nusa Dua, cannot see the scene of the waves hitting the reefs.

On Tuesday (Sep. 5), the entrance to the Waterblow location was closed by using bamboo logs and installed with a warning on red pamphlet emphasizing three points. Firstly, the Waterblow Nusa Dua is temporarily closed due to huge waves. Secondly, there is no lifeguard in the area. Thirdly, the Waterblow area is not covered by accident insurance, so any accident risk becomes the responsibility of visitors.

Though having been closed, the location remains to be thronged by visitors.

A local security guard on duty at the location said that it will be possibly opened after the kite season. “Now, the wind blow is still tight, maybe after the kite season the wind will be back to normal. It is dangerous sir, so please do apologize this area should be closed temporarily from around a month ago,” he said.

When confirmed to the Managing Director of Nusa Dua Resort, Wayan Karioka, he justified such condition. But he said that currently is applied the open-close system to this Waterblow tourist area. This step is taken due to huge sea waves that affect the sound of the waves. Previously, there had been an incident where a tourist was crashed by the waves.

on cooperation with insurance company. He admitted the tourist area currently has no guarantee of accident insurance for visitors. Besides, his management still attempted the

Apocalyptic horror “mother!” was conceived in five days, director says VENICE - Darren Aronofsky’s horror film “mother!” about humanity’s unstoppable destruction of the earth was conceived in just five days, the U.S director said ahead of the film’s world premiere on Tuesday. Aronofsky, known for “Black Swan” and “The Wrestler”, said at the Venice film festival that most of his movies take years to create but this was different.

He was inspired by what he saw around him and his inability to do much about it: from the United States pulling out of the Paris climate deal, an iceberg melting in the Arctic to people starving, while others live in opulence.

“I just had a lot of rage and anger, and I just wanted to channel it into one emotion, one feeling,” the Academy Award nominee told reporters. “And in five days I wrote the first version of the script. It just sort of poured out of me.”

The result is an apocalyptic metaphor, rich in religious, environmental and political undertones.

Jennifer Lawrence plays mother, a young wife who lives with her poet husband -- Javier Bardem -- in a secluded country house. While he is trying to overcome a serious bout of writer’s block, she is busy

restoring his family home.

Their seemingly idyllic existence starts falling apart when unexpected guests -- starting with Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer -- arrive at their doorstep.

Lawrence, whose roles usually focus on strong female leads, is thrust into portraying someone living to make her husband happy and asked to give and give until she can give no more.

Hurricane Irma churns through Caribbean islands, possibly en route to Florida SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Hurricane Irma, one of the most powerful Atlantic storms in a century, churned across northern Caribbean islands on Wednesday with a catastrophic mix of fierce winds, surf and rain, en route to a possible Florida landfall at the weekend. Irma is expected to become the second powerful storm to thrash the U.S. mainland in as many weeks after devastating Hurricane Harvey, but its precise trajectory remained uncertain.

The eye of Irma, a Category 5 storm packing winds of 185 miles per hour (295 km per hour), passed over the island of Barbuda east of Puerto Rico, early on Wednesday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami reported, possibly hitting Florida on Saturday.

“We are hunkered down and it is very windy ... the wind is a major threat,” said Garfield Burford, the director of news at ABS TV and Radio on the island of Antigua,

south of Barbuda. “So far, some roofs have been blown off.” Most people who were on Antigua and Barbuda were without power and about 1,000 people were spending the night in shelters in Antigua, according to Burford.

“It’s very scary ... most of the islands are dark so it’s a very, very frightening,” he said. The amount of damage and the number of casualties were not known early on Wednesday. A 75-year-old man

died while preparing for the storm in Puerto Rico’s central mountains, police said.

Several other Leeward Islands, including Anguilla, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, as well as for the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic were under a hurricane warning. “Preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to completion,” the Hurricane Center said, warning that Irma “will bring life-threatening wind, storm

surge and rainfall hazards” to those islands.

Along the beachfront of Puerto Rico’s capital, San Juan, work crews scrambled to cover windows with plywood and corrugated metal shutters along Avenida Ashford, a stretch of restaurants, hotels and six-story apartments. “I am worried because this is the biggest storm we have seen here,” said Jonathan Negron, 41, as he supervised workers boarding up his souvenir shop.

The NHC said Irma ranked as one of the five most powerful Atlantic hurricanes during the past 80 years and the strongest Atlantic basin storm ever outside the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico.

Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rossello urged the 3.4 million residents of the U.S. territory to seek refuge in one of 460 hurricane shelters in advance of the storm and later ordered police and National Guard troops to begin evacuations of flood-prone areas in the north and east of the island.
