Batu Mas Kuning Temple usa Penida retains many stories in relation to the existence of temples. One of them is the story about the Batu Mas Kuning Temple located at Semaya hamlet, Suana village, Nusa Penida. Originally, only some few people who knew about it. However, after a peculiarity of a horrendous huge fish running aground in front of the Dalem Ped Temple, the Batu Mas Kuning Temple increasingly drew the attention of local community. What happened? This temple is located about 12 kilometers from the harbor of Kutampi roro vessel, or four kilometers eastwards of the Goa Giri Putri Temple. Originally, it has been established from time immemorial, precisely at Semaya Cape. Local temple priest, Mangku Wayan Katon, said on Saturday (Jan 4) that in 2000 it had been ritually inaugurated or melaspas and Ngenteg Linggih. After the ritual, Nusa Penida residents were surprised by the emergence of grandiose fish with the length of about six meters and width of four meter ran aground in the Dalem Ped Temple. Under dead condition, the huge fish increasingly generated stench odor. Local residents were said to have attempted to wash it to the sea. The carcass drifted eastward and pulled around the Batu Mas Kuning Temple. Similarly, local residents were unable to stand the stench. Thus, they also attempted to wash it back to the sea. “Moreover, our community was conducting a Melasti ceremony then,” said Mangku Katon. Even, local people announced that any residents who could wash the carcass back to the sea, they would be exempted from the obligation to do devotional works. The efforts to get rid of the carcass succeeded. The fish was drifting back towards the east as far as one kilometer, and ran aground near the Dalem Temple of Semaya hamlet. As it was considered not to interfere, the carcass was left to be stranded on the beach by residents until a few months. However, the carcass drifted back towards the beach near the Batu Mas Kuning Temple. Since the stench began to decrease, local residents ignored it. However, local seaweed cultivation becoming the livelihood of local people was entirely dead all of a sudden for almost a year. As a result, residents were made distraught and wondering. Was there anything to do with the carcass? Amidst of the confusion, some residents admit-

ted to have the same dream. As recognition of a resident named I Made Luti and some other women, they were told there was an old man in their dream dressed in white claimed as Mangku Segara who wanted to be cremated. Such a dream was conveyed to other people and spread from word to mouth. After that, it was discussed in the village assembly. “It was raising a debate that fish was not worth cremating, so I was given the mandate to ask to the ancestors through a medium,” he said. Apparently, it was revealed if the big fish stranded in Nusa Penida was Lord Varuna, having reunion with Lord Tiga Sakti based on the results of consultation to a medium. It was also supported by the fact that a number of residents put into a trance. Since then, local residents flocked to the location of the huge fish. Now, the Batu Mas Kuning Temple is also called the Payogan Temple of Lord Varuna having reunion with Lord Tiga Sakti with four temple complexes. Originally, it was only a Puseh and Segara Temple. Lately, it was added with the Payogan Temple of Lord Tiga Sakti and Taman Temple. B N (BTN/kmb)
