ura of this temple is very intense. It does not only retain shrines in Balinese architecture, but also features a temple of old Javanese style. This sacred ancient relic remains to survive up to these days. For a venue of meditation, it must be solemn. Moreover, if it is carried out in Garba Cave located in the east of the temple exactly at the Pakerisan riverside, the ambience will surely be more stable. Foreign tourists are very eager to visit the sanctuary. It’s the Pengukurukuran Temple. It is believed to be the first to measure the strength of Bali in the past time. Here, the strength of Kebo Iwa was measured before becoming a chief minister in ancient Balinese kingdom. The location on the edge of Pakerisan River was used as a school for the kings of Bali. Its location is at the Sawagunung customary village, Pejeng, Tampaksiring subdistrict, Gianyar County.

Chief of local temple priests, Jero Mangku Dewa Gede Rauh, revealed the temple had some shrines along with the sites originating from ancient times. The temple spreading across 2 hectares of land was said to be the venue where the kings of ancient Bali measured the land, including finding a suitable place to build the center of a temple. The values of prehistoric and historic remains in the form of Great Temple were stored in the shrine of Ratu Bujangga. Meanwhile, in the east of the temple, exactly on the edge of Pakerisan Temple, lay a relic named Garba Cave believed to guard the temple. It was said the cave was once taken advantage by Chief Minister Kebo Iwa from Bedahulu kingdom. In the south of the temple occurred a stone path and rock stone gates. The road was heading for the Garba Cave. There was a stone containing a trace of footprint

whose size exceeded the size of a human foot soles and believed if it belonged to Kebo Iwa. At the making of a ladder, the stones were said to walk by itself pursuant to the will of Kebo Iwa. Uniquely, every time stepping down the stairs, the amount was always different. According to story developing in the area, before Kebo Iwa became a Chief Minister of Bedahulu his competency was tested by the royal officials, including by Ki Pasung Grigis, known to have a supernatural power. The place where to measure the supernatural strength was known as Dharmma Hanyar. Since Kebo Iwa was unbeaten he was finally accepted to fill in the position as Chief Minister of Bedahulu. On that account, the capability of Kebo Iwa was measured in the Dharmma Hanyar, where the place was then called Pengukurukuran. B N (BTN/015)

Many Balinese people believe if unmarried couples have vacation or dating to Tanah Lot Temple will cause the relationship not to last longer or immediately break up. If the prohibition is violated, the relationship with the boyfriend or girlfriend is believed not to last long. It will become not harmonious leading to be separated. Although being difficult to prove, believe it or not, Balinese people especially young couples strongly believe in the myth. They never want to bring their partner to Tanah Lot Temple. Merely walking in the area of Tanah Lot area is commonly done by young couples. “The myth does not apply to married couples,” said Jero Niti, Public Relations of Tanah Lot attraction. In the current modern era, explained Jero Niti, the myth remains to be trusted by the Hindu community in Bali, unlike tourists coming to visit with girlfriend or boyfriend. Does the myth also apply to them? “Tourists rarely care about it whether they are with a girlfriend or not. They certainly do

not know whether they will break up or not,” she said. Another myth is related to the holy snake living in the coral cave. The snake is believed to be the guardian of the temple securing people away from the threat of evil and destruction. It is said if there will be a natural disaster or disaster, the snake will show a sign through the emergence of the king or queen of the red sea snake. Balinese people believe if this sacred snake often moves to Tanah Lot temple at night to keep the purity of the temple. Meanwhile, there is also a myth of holy water serving as remedy for looking young. The spring is located beneath of the Tanah Lot Temple. The spring coming out of the temple wall is believed to make people ageless. Thus, many Balinese people wish to pray or just use the water to wash their face. “Although the story on the myth of Tanah Lot Temple continues to circulate, tourists continuously come to the attraction located at Beraban village, Kediri, Tabanan,” (BTN/015) said Jero Niti.

In addition, Les Village is also famous for its very amazing beach with its magnificent underwater world view. Located some 90 kilometers north of Denpasar, Les is blessed with a majestic waterfall and rich underwater scenery at its beach. The best way to reach Les is by rented or private car or motorcycle, so visitors can stop where they want to take photos. The shortest route from Denpasar to Les is through Gianyar and Kintamani, where visitors can stop to enjoy the wonderful Lake Batur and mountain views while sipping hot Balinese coffee outside Pura Puncak Panulisan, a temple. The waterfall is about 1 kilometer from the village’s main road. Visitors can park at the entrance gate, where a few shops sell snacks and souvenirs, before walking along a path to an open area next to a wide river, with a small stream of water and huge rocks. After crossing the river, a similar footpath leads to the waterfall.

egog is a form of gamelan music indigenous to Bali, Indonesia, played on instruments made of bamboo. The tradition of jegog is centered in Jembrana, a region in Western Bali. In recent years jegog has started to become popular in other regions of Bali with a few groups being established in central Bali to entertain tourists. International interest has been spread by tourists visiting Bali and by recordings. There are virtually no ensembles outside of Bali with the exception of at least two groups in Japan (Sekar Sakura and Geinoh Yamashirogumi, the latter’s having been used in 4 of the tracks in their score for the film Akira as well as on the final track of Ecophony Rinne), one in the United States (Sekar Jaya) and one in Germany. Jegog music is very fast, loud, rhythmic and precise. Pieces last from a few minutes to as long as thirty minutes. We invited a very special talent teacher directly from Jembrana for 3 years, from how to build a Jegog and how to play it till becomes a group of Jegog’s orchestra. Instrument Jegog instruments have a fournote scale that roughly corresponds to the four pitches of a dominant 7th chord in Western music. All instruments have eight bamboo keys. Some instruments have two keys for each pitch slightly detuned so that the pitches beat when they are

played together. Other instruments have a two octave range with four pitches in a low octave and the same four pitches anoctave higher. In this case the instrument will be paired with another instrument that is slightly detuned. Taken together the ensemble has a range of five octaves. Most Jegog ensembles have instruments that have keys that are made of bamboo that are split at one end and then half of the tube is removed. The other end remains intact and functions as a resonator for the split part. The keys are suspended on a wooden frame and struck with mallets (called pangguls), made out of wood or rubber. There are also Jegog ensembles with instruments called Jegog Tingklik. These smaller instruments are used primarily with children. The keys are made of bamboo slats mounted above a resonatorbox. Jegog The lowest instrument in a Jegog ensemble is also called a Jegog. The ensemble gets its name from this instrument. The keys of the Jegog instrument are as long as 3 meters in length and a pitch as low as 60 hertz. The instrument is so large, and the mallets are so heavy that it takes two people to play it. The players crouch on a platform on the top of the instrument and alternate playing the keys. The Jegog instrument has the lowest octave of the ensemble. Each pair of pitches are detuned by as much as 7 hertz. In this octave, that is almost a whole tone. The keys are

Melody Instruments One octave higher than the Jegog is an instrument called the Undir, and an octave above that is the Kuntung. The instruments are small enough to be played by one person each. The Undir is still big enough that the player needs to crouch on a platform on the top of it to play it. There are two Undir and two Kuntung. The Undir and Kuntung have the same arrangement of keys as the Jegog. These five instruments together play the melody (called the bun). Some ensembles have a high pitch flute called a suling that

also plays the melody. Kotekan instruments Each of the remaining 9 instruments span two octaves and are arranged 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 where 5 through 8 is an octave above 1 to 4. The lowest of these instruments, called the Barangan, span the same octaves as the Undir and the Kuntung. The next higher is the Kancil which begins with the octave of the Kuntung and extends an octave higher. The next higher—the highest in the ensemble—is the Suir, likewise, extending one octave higher. There are three Barangan, three Kancil, and three suir. The Barangan play the melody twice as fast as the other melody instru-

ments. Since this is often very fast, the players alternate playing the notes. The Kancil and Suir play interlocking patterns called Kotekan, sometimes the Barangan play these patterns as well. The Barangan are the front line of the ensemble. The center of the three Barangan is the leader of the ensemble. Other players watch the leader for cues and (BTN/(tirka widanti)) tempo changes.

Gde Palgunadi palgunadigde@yahoo.com round a month ago, tourists from China were really cranky. Their visit to Bali absolutely reached zero point. Just imagine, approximately 1,500 Chinese tourists arrive every month but now they are totally quiet. Due to travel warning issued by their government, Chinese tourist visit to the Island of the Gods really and totally stuck. The travel warning was issued following the eruption of Mount Agung. Actually, the existence of the highest volcano in Bali is far from the tourist spots usually visited by Chinese citizens. It is away from Kuta, away from Ubud, away from Tanah Lot and so on. Ah well, it is only a story of the past. Yet now, amid the incessant efforts of the government to counter the news, their arrival has begun to appear. According to a travel entrepreneur that usually deals with Chinese tourists, their potential is huge. As long as the airport is not closed, they will come. After all, in the long run they ultimately know the facts. The existence of Mount Agung and the radius of disaster are very far from where the tourists make their recreation. After all, if the airport is closed, the government and related stakeholders have

Chinese Tourists Have Started to Come aving previously touched zero point, now the tourist visit from China has started coming again. Some time ago, they decided not to come to Bali following the travel warning issued by the Beijing government. This had something to do with the news on the eruption of Mount Agung which is not entirely correct and understood. “They are quite potential. At least, there are about 1,500 people who come every month. This is very nice. Do not always compare to Thailand because the situation is different. Besides, China and Thailand is geographically much closer,” said Rusli Budidjaja, Managing Director of Bali Elephant Tour & Travel. According to the man who has a wealth of experience in Chinese tourism market, all parties need to enhance synergistic steps to restore them to Bali. The potential of Bali, he added, has been extraordinary. It just needs small effort to develop them. What said by Rusli Budidjaja, familiarly addressed as Awong, is not excessive. This task is more challenging when Minister of Tourism, Arief Yahya, has met the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) to (BTN/055) further enhance the cooperation between both parties. B N

Diplomacy of Barong Landung owned a contingency plan. They will use overland transportation to transport tourists wishing to return to their home country via the nearest airport. It can be Banyuwangi, Juanda or Lombok. Besides, the government has prepared other convenience. For instance, they will be provided with free one-night stay as well as free transportation to the nearest airport and once meal. This is an anticipatory measure having been prepared. Hopefully, Mount Agung will not erupt anymore and safe for tourists. Once again, let’s talk about Chinese tourists. If only they knew and if only they understood, there is a very strong historical link between Bali and their country. Possibly they will think twice. Perhaps, they will have other considerations if their government understands about the story of Barong Landung, the story between the royal couple of ancient Sino-Balinese (Balingkang) Kingdom named Sri Jaya Pangus and Kang Ching Wee. The marriage was realized in the form of Barong Landung culture as what we see today. If only they knew, perhaps this cultural diplomacy of Barong Landung could be used. However, Chinese government still puts forward safety of its citizens above all else. Understandably, soft cultural approach can usually soften rigid attitude. Moreover, the culture is wrapped with the field facts that will scientifically difficult to be argued. The success of cultural diplomacy is evident in many countries. Moreover, they are supported by cultural and personal attachment of the leaders. Sometimes these are often leading to unexplained and sentimental feelings. So, it will result in ‘brotherhood’ spirit familiarly known in the social concept of Balinese society. B N

Ayu Manik admitted the most interested visitors in the latest J4 Hotel package are tourists from India. They prefer the honeymoon package. They do love honeymoon package which usually offers the stay for four nights. “We are preparing special packages and special management in cooperation with one of the villas in Ubud, so there is a collaboration of hotel with villa. Guests will stay in crowded area at J4 Hotel for 2 nights and then in a peaceful place of Ubud for 2 days, so it becomes balanced,” she said. he arrangement of Kumbasari Park and Badung Market has been completed. The inaugural ceremony coincided with full moon of the eight month in Balinese calendar falling on Wednesday (Jan. 31). Mayor of Denpasar, I.B. Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra, inaugurated the Kumbasari Park marked by signing of inscription and putting animal sacrifice into the flow of Badung River. Today, the area becomes a new tourist attraction for the local community and tourists. Mayor Rai Mantra accompanied by the Chairman of the Commission III of the Denpasar House of Representatives, Eko Supriadi, also spread 10,000 tilapia fingerlings in the flow of Badung River along with relevant agency heads in the city government of Denpasar. This is to preserve the ecosystem of Badung River. Rai Mantra also provided groceries to 140 officers of clean river program (Prokasih), 105 flushing officers and 40 gatekeepers symbolically. He said the arrangement is

meant to make the river clean and transform it into a River Walk concept (a place to walk on the river bank). “Badung River can now be used as a recreation place and have economic impact and educate the public about cleanliness of the future with the increase of selfawareness. So, the river will not be made into a place to dispose of garbage,” he said Arrangement of the Badung River, explained Rai Mantra, is meant to encourage people to keep the river clean and not to litter. This does not only transform them to look beautiful, but also makes something that has the potential, as in Bindu River and Tukad River. Now, they become a new potential and special attraction. Onwards, the river arrangement will continuously be done by pay-

ing attention to the entire river flow that allows to be reorganized. If possible, they will be made river transportation such as small boats to further facilitate the transportation of river recreation. Besides, it will facilitate the community to traditional markets connected to the river. “So, this River Walk can be used as a potential of water in all aspects, whether the economic, education, transportation and health aspect. It makes something useless into something valuable,” said Rai Mantra. Acting Head of the Denpasar Public Works and Spatial Agency, Nyoman Ngurah Jimmy Sidarta, revealed the arrangement of river banks in essence can change the behavior of people who consider the river as a garbage dump. “With this arrangement, people

Since it is sanctified, any woman who gets her period is not allowed to come in and this prohibition also applies to all the royal family members. A Vietnam War general veteran from the United States has visited the architecture for four times. “We ever asked people to plagiarize the wall ornamental style, but none were successful,” he affirmed. People coming into the palace area must pass through the gates made in traditional architectural style. Beautiful garden is overgrown by colorful flowers denoting the native plants to the Island of the Gods. Similarly, the big trees grow sustainably in the palace area belong to rare plants. “We deliberately plant the rare species belonging to Balinese ancestors. Aside from preserving, these trees can also exude a positive aura,” he said. Loji, a building for hosting guests remains sturdy and applies traditional ornament. Meanwhile, in the next building is stored a gamelan set that is usually played by natural artists from local village. Meanwhile, weaving activity used to be performed by royal ladies in the past remains to survive. However, it is carried out by some artisans living close to royal palace. On Saturdays and Sundays or any particular time, the area is thronged by kids. They learn to dance and play gamelan music. It is a cultural course organized at free of charge and instructors are specially brought in to the palace. “We want to preserve the function

AA Kakarsana of palace as a center for cultural preservation. Besides, it also poses an attempt to encourage younger generation to love their cultural heritages,” he said. Sacred objects such as the Gajah Mada mask and Ki Tunjung Tutur weapon (in the form of large blowpipe) and puppet gambuh make this palace more unique. Other than community leaders and government officials, many tourists also make a visit. “We remain open for tourists who want to make a visit, but there are certain norms to be followed,” he said. Kakarsana then pointed out that it was not allowed to organize any wedding ritual or other rituals in the royal palace. Meanwhile, reception or art performance was still allowed. he arrangement of Kumbasari Park and Badung Market has been completed.

“With this arrangement, people

design and no one can imitate it,” he said. Its ornament tells a story and contains a philosophy of life. It is made of bricks producing a neat slanting formation.

Even, the royal party would support it. According to him, it was carried out to keep the sacred culture.BTN

Guests will stay in crowded area at J4 Hotel for 2 nights and then in a peaceful place of Ubud for 2 days, so it becomes balanced,” she said. ambu Roras Resto located in the lobby area of Grand Ixora Resort, precisely at Jalan Kartika Plaza No.92 Kuta, has now owned new menus. A total of seven newest menus are launched this mid January 2018. The new menus include Special Megibung of Balinese Food, Burger Mixed with Indian and Western Food, Healthy Food, Glory Odong-Odong and Kampong Fried Rice of Bambu Roras style. Chef Kadek Arimbawa who prepares the menu said that Bambu Roras always presents a new menu in accordance with

the existing guests. It is a kind of service, in addition to the demands of innovation in serving delicious menus. “We always innovate in the menu creation and it is always tailored to the market share. Since six months ago, we have innovated in Indian Food and Chinese Food because we have entered the Asian market, so the set menu is also made special,” he said. The Special Megibung menu, explained Chef Arimbawa, is Balinese cuisine deliberately appointed to preserve and cultivate Balinese culture. Thus, the echo is not only in the local level, but also goes international. “Traditional menu having been processed with modern style poses the addition to hospitality in order to go

On that account, the contest is also important to be organized in Sanur, a peaceful village tourist area. “This bartender event is not only worthy to be held in Nusa Dua or Kuta tourist area, but also in Sanur. By that way, Sanur is not only known as a tourist destination for the elderly, but also for young tourists,” he said. Eddo added that holding such event is very necessary to develop Sanur tourism. international. “Foreign tourists can enjoy it because the flavor has been adjusted,” he added. Special Megibung is packed with several other foods, such as twisted satay, chicken betutu, shredded chicken, eggs, crackers, vegetables, soup and rice cone. Cerancam soup is accompanied with four types of condiment namely fried condiment, raw condiment, chopped garlic and aromatic ginger condiment and red condiment. “One serving of the Special Megibung menu is enough for two people,” said the man graduated AKPAR Denpasar. Kampong Fried Rice of Bambu Roras style is also classified into classic and distinctive menu. It is called

classic because the cooking system remains to use traditional manner and using local spices as well as garlic and aromatic ginger. At first, the rice is mixed with spices and then wrapped in banana leaves and baked, so the seasoning can seep. Once cooked, it is fried and served with eggs, satay, crackers and chili sauce and pickles. Previously, Bambu Roras has released a number of menus such as Duck with King Condiment, Chicken Kung Po, Chicken Chip the Burger, Moroccan Hot Dog and Bitcher Muesli. “Bamboo Roras All Day Dinning with the release of a new menu has become part of our agenda. This is a form of our service,” added Chef Arimbawa. (BTN/015)

The gallery will showcase the works of Balinese artists alternately in every one and a half months. “We are grateful as the tourists visit has improved after the eruption of Mount Agung. This February and March period has been better than the same period in the previous year,” he concluded.

as on Kuta Beach, Dreamland Beach or Suluban Beach. Besides, there are also beaches where a wide range of water sport activities can be enjoyed

like on Tanjung Benoa Beach and Sanur Beach. On the other beaches visitors can see sunrise and sunset views. Jimbaran Beach, South Kuta, Badung, is a famous beach to relax while watching sunset view and enjoying delicious seafood dishes from restaurants around the beach. So in addition to being a beach resort, Jimbaran Beach also becomes one of the culinary tourist destinations in Bali often recommended by people as destination where to eat delicious food, especially for grilled fish, squid and so

forth. It is located at Jimbaran village, one of the famous tourism villages in South Kuta subdistrict. Jimbaran Beach is bordered with Muaya Beach at the southern tip and Kedonganan Beach at the north end. Since its location remains in Kuta area, the access to Jimbaran Beach is quite easy and close from Kuta Beach, either from Denpasar or Sanur. To luxuriate in the excellent lunch or dinner, this beach deserves to be the option of visitors, where they have two options of dining area, namely indoor or outdoor. If wishing to have dinner while enjoying the moment of sunset view, choose the outdoor area. However, you should first make a reservation to the cafe because it is always full of tourists. For dinner, the dishes will generally be ready once the sun begins to set. Grilled snapper, grilled mussels, squid

satay, water spinach with spicy sauce to crispy fried groupers have started to be presented on table. Surely, they are accompanied with a basket of steamed rice and three kinds of condiment as complement. Now, it is time to eat! Then, for the drink visitors can choose the options like mineral water, fruit juice or young coconut. Everything is fresh and appropriate to be served with existing seafood dishes. At the end of the meal, we are given an extra bonus in the form of fruit plates for dessert. Bon appetite! Regarding the price, it can indeed be said to be intended for middle to upper class, but it is comparable to the experience obtained at this culinary adventure. Romantic dinner while watching sunset on the beach will surely become so special.

Les Waterfall

Les waterfall is located in Les village, 38 kilometer south to Singaraja, in the north Bali. The waterfall is overlooking green hills and untouched nature. The height is about 30 meters.

Munduk Waterfall

It is one of the fabulous waterfall on the island that is located in the village of Munduk, north Bali. The path down to the waterfall is densely planted with clove and coffee trees as well as Avocado, Taro, Banana and some Durian tree. You can have such a great exercise while learning about the local farm and getting to know better of the local vegetation along the path down to the mighty waterfall. Munduk lies on the altitude of about 800 meters above sea level is offering such a fresh mountain air and far out of pollution. Amongst a number of waterfalls in Bali, Munduk would offer you a chance to really enjoy its beauty as it is not being so commercial yet, no one would bother you with buying things as at most of the tourist sites on the island. There are a few waterfalls here and if you want to do further exercise, you can easily walk up the hill side from this waterfall and get down on the other side of the hilly village and walk down to another one that is quit as high as this one. egog is a form of gamelan music indigenous to Bali, Indonesia, played on instruments made of bamboo.
