Eminem rebukes ‘racist’ Donald Trump in awards show rap LOS ANGELES - Rapper Eminem derided U.S. President Donald Trump as a racist and a reckless leader in a rap video that aired on Tuesday night during the Black Entertainment Television Hip Hop Awards. Eminem told his fans in the fourminute unaccompanied vocal they must choose whether to support him or the president. “Racism is the only thing that he’s fantastic for,” Eminem rapped in the video that was taped on Friday in a Detroit parking garage. Trump has previously dismissed accusations of racism. For example, he said in February he is “the least racist person.” Representatives for the White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment about Eminem’s rap, which was one of the most watched videos on YouTube early on Wednesday. The rap also mentioned Barack
Obama, Trump’s predecessor in the White House, and Hillary Clinton, Trump’s Democratic rival in last year’s presidential election. “But we better give Obama props / ‘cause what we got in office now is a kamikaze / that’ll probably cause a nuclear holocaust,” Eminem rapped. Eminem rebuked Trump for his strong criticism of National Football League players who kneel during the national anthem before games. Hulk, the muscle-bound, largerthan-life green alter-ego of scientist Bruce Banner, appears in the upcoming “Thor: Ragnarok,” out in U.S. theaters on Nov. 3, as a gladiator trapped on a futuristic planet and forced to fight Thor. The Hulk will also appear in 2018’s “Avengers: Infinity War” and its sequel, 2019’s yet-to-betitled Avengers 4. “We’ve taken the arc of a standalone Hulk movie and put it into those three movies, consciously,” Ruffalo said.
Ruffalo, who has spent more time as scientist Banner than as the Hulk in the past two Avengers films, said he relished the opportunity to be in character as the Hulk for the majority of “Thor: Ragnarok.” “This movie is about just breaking free of the forms and rules, and so I got to break free from what we thought Hulk was to a slightly more fleshed-out character,” he said. The Hulk, who first appeared in comics in 1962, has had his own standalone television shows and movies in the past, notably 2003’s
“Hulk” and 2008’s “The Incredible Hulk” films, both from Universal Pictures. 98 percent of Bali`s tourist attractions located in safe zone
JAKARTA - Despite Mount Agung showing increased activity, 98 percent of the tourist attractions on Bali Island remain safe for visit, the Bali Tourism Board stated. “According to information from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, 98 percent of the tourist areas remain safe in Bali, even if Mount Agung erupts,” Dewa Gede Ngurah Byomantara, head of the Boards Bali Tourism Hospitality Division 3, was quoted as saying on the official website of the Indonesian Foreign Ministry, here, Wednesday. If the volcano were to erupt, only two percent of Balis tourist attractions -- Besakih, Tulamben, and Tirta Gangga -- would be affected. “Kuta, Ubud, Nusa Dua, and Sanur are located far from Mount Agung. Until now, we believe that the area beyond 12 kilometers from Mount Agungs crater remains safe,” he added.
The Bali provincial administration has taken precautionary measures to tackle the spread of false news or hoax about the volcanic activity of Mount Agung and is ready to provide latest updates on the situation of the volcano. If Mount Agung erupts, the tourism board will provide various facilities to tourists, including free
accommodations and transportation to the airport. Earlier, Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika had convinced tourists to visit the resort island without hesitation, adding that it remains safe and conducive despite the increased activity of Mount Agung, which is located in Karangasem District, Bali Island.
The governor made assurance during a meeting with tourism stakeholders, such as travel operators, in Denpasar, Bali, on Oct 3. If Mount Agung erupts, it will have a direct impact on only 28 villages located within a radius of 12 kilometers from the volcanos crater. Another assurance was given by Tourism Minister Arief Yahya, who informed the international public that Bali remains safe for visits, despite the alert status of Mount Agung being raised. “Bali remains safe for tourist visits by both domestic and foreign travellers. We have taken various
anticipatory measures and are well prepared in case of an eruption,” he had said on Oct 5. Village chiefs feeling stress, Debts for handling of evacuees unsettled by govt AMLAPURA - Headmen have been working hard to handle the Mount Agung evacuees. In addition to the burden on village fund management that is reaching in to the billions of rupiahs, the headmen are also responsible for handling all the needs of the evacuees. Some headmen are now bearing a debt after paying out large sums to deal with the evacuees and are now becoming quite stressed as the debt has not been paid by the government. Headman of Telaga Tawang, Sideman, Byoman Sukarma is one the headmen who is facing such conditions. He explained that when the evacuees first arrived there were no provisions for them and every village head was directed to buy the nearest available provisions
using debt if need be. However, the local government and task-force at the Tanah Ampo Command Post were subsequently not willing to reimburse the invoice for the total expenditure for weeks that was submitted. “At that time, after the announcement of the warnign status of Moutn Agung on the night of September 22, people were very panicky. Residents from Selat, Peringsari and North Duda village, I the subdistrict of Selat fled to Telaga Tawang Village. We were directed by the local government to immediately provide for the needs of the evacuees from September 23-25th by taking debt. Now that we have submitted the total for the expenditures, no one is willing to
reimburse this debt that we took. We are tired and are being given the runaround”, said headman of Telaga Tawang, Nyoman Sukarma, on Wednesday (Oct. 11). The total expenditure at that time reached about IDR 15 million. Sukarma admitted that he feels uneasy with the stall owners who keep asking when they will be paid. Fortunately, on the fourth day of evacuation, volunteers and other private parties brought donations to the evacuation posts in the village. village. According to directives of the Governor of Bali, he only has the authority to issue evacuee cards to residents of villages within the exclusion zone. “Hopefully, the community (from outside the exclusion zone) can understand. Italian fashion house Gucci to stop using fur
PARIS - Italy’s Gucci will stop using fur in its designs from next year, joining a growing number of fashion houses looking at alternatives amid pressure from animal rights activists and changing consumer tastes. Gucci, part of Paris-based luxury conglomerate Kering , has seen its sales rise over the past two years under creative director Alessandro Michele. Marco Bizzarri, Gucci’s chief executive, said the brand would drop fur starting from its spring and summer 2018 collection, adding that the decision had been taken alongside Michele.
“In selecting a new creative director I wanted to find someone who shared a belief in the importance of the same values,” Bizzarri said. Gucci, which has produced fur-lined loafers and luxurious mink fur coats in the past, is the latest label or major retailer to stop using fur. In June, Yoox Net-A-Porter, a multi-brand online luxury retailer, adopted a fur-free policy on accessories and clothing sold on the site. Anti-fur protesters have been known to demonstrate outside catwalk shows at fashion weeks around the world to call for an end to practices many see as cruel to animals, and luxury goods buyers have become more sensitive to

Road to airport cleared of parking
MANGUPURA — The underpass project at the roundabout of the I Gusti Ngurah Rai statue on Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai, Kuta, Badung, will be worked on in the near future. Therefore, the Directorate of Traffic Affairs of Bali Police will apply traffic engineering, especially on the route to Ngurah Rai Airport. As planned, the route from the roundabout to the airport will be completely closed. All vehicles will be diverted to Jalan Raya Kuta, Jalan Sunset Road, Jalan Dewi Sri and Jalan Raya Tuban and all parking will be prohibited. In addition, personnel of the highway patrol, directorate of Bali police traffic affairs have prepared the pathways by giving an appeal to the public not to park their vehicles along the alternative roads to the airport. Director of Bali Police Traffic Affairs, Anak Agung Made Sudana, instructed his staff to find the right solution to overcome traffic jams. “The project is planned to start on October 17. One of our efforts is to prevent illegal parking as a first step in preventing traffic jams. When the project is in progress, our members will continuously monitor the smoothness of the lane. Then, the lane heading to the airport must be entirely free of parked vehicles”, said Sudana on Tuesday (Oct. 10). Sudana accompanied his staff in clearing the parked cars and even helped install the resticted parking ropes.
Sudana affirmed that parking must be dealt with as traffic in Kuta is already constricted. Less than orderly driving and indiscriminate parking are major factors that cause traffic congestion, he said. “We are working with members of traffic affairs of Kuta Police and Denpasar Police. We will also be preventing parking in front of the customary market of Kuta village”, he added. The road project will impact traffic as in addition to the already large volume of vehicles this road is also used to access Ngurah Rai International Airport, Nusa Dua, Uluwatu and Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK). In order to make the traffic engineering plan public, Sudana attended a meeting in the multipurpose building of LPD Tuban, Badung to discuss the underpass construction project. On that occasion, this three-jasmine officer got a lot of inputs from the community about the problems arising from the project. Therefore, the directorate of traffic affairs together with the ranks will continue to seek solutions and other alternatives so that boht the project and traffic can run smoothly. Logistics coordinator at Rendang post, I Wayan Sudiarta, said on Tuesday (Oct. 10) that they are facing major obstacles in terms of clean water supplies. The availability of clean water has reached a critical point with drinking water having been runnning extremely low for a few days already. “Right now, we very much need a supply of clean water. Moreover, the toilets have been exuding a stench for the last week as there is no water to flush”, he explained. He added the water supply from the municipality waterworks (PDAM) is indeed available, however it is not beeing channeled everyday. Previously, the provincial public works had planned to provide clean water and officers even came down to survey the situation. Unfortunately this aid has yet to reach the evacuation post In addition to needing clean water itself, Sudiarta is hoping for a water storage tank that can be used to store extra water when the municipal waterworks is running. Evacuees clearly need water everyday, but now they have none. “We really hope for some help.
Hopefully, we will be provided with water tanks to store clean water” he said in despair. Sudiarta further explained that this evacuation post also needs medicines and that a medical post needs to be established with doctors and nurses on duty. The stamina of the disaster relief officers and volunteers has started to decline. A number of evacuees have fallen ill due to the extreme weather conditions. With health personnel on duty, evacuees can receive immediate treatment. “At first, we were still receiving donations of medicines. People who brought food also brought medical supplies, but now there is no longer such aid. People who fall ill are still being handled at the Rendang Health Center”, he explained. When asked about food supplies, Sudiarta siad that so far it remains sufficient, but that vegetables are very much needed as the evacuees have been eating nothing but noodles for many days. “We really need vegetable, because the evacuees have been eating instant noodles for three weeks now”, Sudiarta who added that tarpaulin are also needed to make temporary walls so that people can stay dry when it rains. Sudiarta explained that the request for food and other supplies is made to the Tanah Ampo main post every four days but is also adapted to the stocks at the Redang evacuation post. “ When stocks run low, we request supplies every two days. Sometimes they send it from Tanah Ampo, sometimes we go pick it up” he added. (kmb41)

28 unlicensed spas cracked down
Myanmar army chief says Rohingya Muslims not native, refugee numbers exaggerated

MANGUPURA — Badung justice team cracked down on 28 unlicensed spa outlets in Kuta area on Wednesday (Oct. 11). Of this number, most spas are located along the Jalan Kartika Plaza and Pantai Kuta, Jalan Legian and Jalan Patih Jelantik namely 15 outlets.
Eight other outlets are located on Jalan Bakung Sari, Jalan Raya Kuta and Jalan Dewi while five outlets on Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai and Jalan Sunset Road. When cracking down, the Justice Team is also supported by Indonesian army, national police, tourism office, social agency, regional development planning board (Bappeda), integrated licensing office, legal and public relations, Badung regional secretary, Kuta subdistrict and village authorities. According to Chief of Badung Municipal Police, who is also chairman of Badung Justice Team, IGAK Surya Negara, the raid is done as a measure for data collection and information seeking related to business. If found having no permission in the raid, it will be issued the summons and the owners are asked to make a statement to immediately submit their permit. For now, in enforcing the rules, Surya Negara did more preventive and persuasive efforts. Nevertheless, he will take firm action if the reprimand given is ignored. He hoped that such an action could inspire entrepreneurs in Kuta and Badung district to comply with the rules on licensing and other applicable regulations. “If there are stubborn entrepreneurs, we will impose misdemeanor. Tourism Office ensures destinations safe to visit
BANGLI — The increasing status of Mount Agung in Karangasem since almost two weeks resulted in the decrease in the number of tourist visit to Bangli. Head of the Bangli Tourism Office, Wayan Adnyana, mentioned the decline in tourist arrivals to Bangli reaches 20 percent. When met in his office on Wednesday (Oct. 11), he said that before the increase of the status of Mount Agung, tourist visits to Bangli per day reached 2,500 people. However, since the increase to the warning status, the visit began to decrease to the range of 20 percent.
Adnyana explained that Bangli region is actually far enough from Mount Agung. In the event of an eruption, Bangli area will not get seriously affected and probably be imposed to volcanic ashes only. “So, our destinations are still very safe to visit,” he explained. To convince tourists to go to Bali including Bangli, Adnyana admitted that his office along with all district tourism offices across Bali recently had a meeting in the province. As result of the meeting, the Bali tourism office issued an official statement stating that destina-
tions in Bali including Bangli are safe to visit. “The official statement has been sent to consulates, ASITA, HPI, travel agencies and all tourism stakeholders,” he explained. When asked about the target of tourism revenue in Bangli with the current condition of Mount Agung, he still hoped to achieve according to the target. “Our revenue target is IDR 22 billion and until now it has reached IDR 15 billion. Japanese media surveys show Abe’s election gamble could pay off
YANGON - Rohingya Muslims are not native to Myanmar, the army chief told the U.S. ambassador in a meeting in which he apparently did not address accusations of abuses by his men and said media was complicit in exaggerating the number of refugees fleeing. Senior General Min Aung Hlaing gave his most extensive account of the Rohingya refugee crisis aimed at an international audience in the meeting with Ambassador Scot Marciel, according to a report posted on his Facebook page. The general is the most powerful person in Buddhist-majority Myanmar and his apparently uncompromising stance would indicate little sensitivity about the military’s image over a crisis that has drawn international condemnation and raised questions about a transition to democracy under Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. The military campaign is popular in Myanmar, where there is little sympathy for the Rohingya, and where Buddhist nationalism has surged. Min Aung Hlaing, referring to Rohingya by the term “Bengali”, which they regard as derogatory, said British colonialists were responsible for the problem. “The Bengalis were not taken into the country by Myanmar, but by the colonialists,” he told Marciel, according to the account of the meeting posted on Thursday. “They are not the natives, and the records prove that they were not
even called Rohingya but just Bengalis during the colonial period.” The U.N. human rights office said on Wednesday Myanmar security forces had brutally driven out half a million Rohingya from northern Rakhine state to Bangladesh, torching their homes, crops and villages to prevent them from returning. Coordinated Rohingya insurgent attacks on some 30 security posts on Aug. 25 sparked a ferocious military response. The U.N. rights office said in its report, based on 65 interviews with Rohingya who had arrived in Bangladesh, that abuses had begun before the Aug. 25 attacks and included killings, torture and rape of children. U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley last month denounced what she called a “brutal, sustained campaign to cleanse the country of an ethnic minority” and called on countries to suspend providing weapons to Myanmar until its military puts sufficient accountability measures in place. TOKYO - Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s snap election gamble looked like paying off after media forecasts showed his ruling bloc heading for a surprisingly big win, possibly enough to re-energise his push to revise Japan’s post-World War Two pacifist constitution. A hefty victory in the Oct.22 poll would raise the likelihood that his Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) will retain Abe as its head for a third term next September, and increase the hawkish leader’s chances of going on to become Japan’s longestserving premier. With 10 days still to go, political sources warned there was still room for a slip up, as about half the voters surveyed remained undecided. For now though, projections by the Nikkei business daily, Yomiuri newspaper and Kyodo news agency showed Abe’s conservative LDPled coalition on track to win close to 300 or more seats in the 465member lower house, improving
the super-majority that it held in the last parliament. CAIRO - A new Egyptian decree meant to combat inflation by forcing food producers to put price tags on their products or face jail time risks increasing pressure on an industry already squeezed by austerity measures, food manufacturers said. Annual inflation is currently running above 30 percent, putting a tight squeeze on people’s spending power, but the government has relatively few options for cracking down on consumer prices. The new price tag decree, published in the official gazette on Tuesday, stipulates that violations could result in jail sentences of up to five years, fines and confiscations. “We don’t want to scare the market. This is not an Egyptian invention. All countries try to regulate their markets to protect (citizens) from the greed of some traders,” said supply ministry spokesman Mamdouh Ramadan. “It’s not compulsory pricing.” But manufacturers and economists dismissed the measure as ineffective or simply a misguided attempt by the government to show it was doing something to combat inflation when it was really stripping the market of needed competitiveness and flexibility. “This contradicts the mode of operations of many factories and results in complications in the production process,” said Hani Berzi, the chairman of Edita Food Industries, one of the country’s largest food producers. LONDON - The euro climbed to a two-week high on Thursday after a slew of strong data that supported a growing view that the European Central Bank will announce a plan to wind down its huge stimulus plan at a policy meeting later this month. Industry data from Italy beat forecasts after Germany reported robust trade data earlier this week, indicating a broad-based economic recovery in the euro zone despite

The euro was also helped by some general dollar weakness, fuelled by minutes from the U.S. Federal Reserve’s latest meeting that suggested some central bankers were still concerned about persistently low inflation.
The dollar index, which measures the greenback’s value against a basket of six major currencies, touched 92.827, its lowest level since Sept. 26. It was last down 0.2 percent at 92.882. The Fed minutes on Wednesday showed many policymakers still felt that another rate increase this year “was likely to be warranted” but several noted that additional tightening was dependent on upcoming inflation data.
“The FOMC minutes indicated that the board was still profoundly divided about the slow pick up in prices,” Stephen Innes, head of trading in Asia-Pacific at Oanda, said in a note. U.S. producer price data on Thursday and consumer price numbers on Friday will be the next focus, after U.S. jobs figures last week showed a rise in wages that boosted expectations that inflation is picking up.(rtr)

SONOMA - Firefighters facing a resurgence of high winds on Wednesday struggled to halt wildfires that have killed at least 23 people, destroyed 3,500 structures and left hundreds missing in chaotic evacuations across northern California’s wine country.
Nearly two dozen blazes spanning eight counties have charred around 170,000 acres (68,797 hectares). Flames erupted on Sunday night when gale force winds toppled power lines across the region, possibly igniting one of the deadliest wildfire outbreaks in California history. The entire town of Calistoga, a Napa Valley community of some 5,000 residents spared from advancing flames the first night of the fire, was ordered to evacuate on Wednesday evening, as the county sheriff’s office warned that conditions had worsened as the so-called Tubbs Fire was burning nearby. “The Tubbs Fire has made slow progress to this point but significant winds are still forecasted,” the city said in an online alert. Flames were spread rapidly by hot, dry “Diablo” winds - similar to Southern California’s Santa Ana winds - that blew into northern California toward the Pacific on Sunday night. The official cause of the fire has not been determined. But electric wires knocked down by those same winds may have sparked the conflagration, according to Daniel Berlant, spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire). “That is definitely a possibility,” he told Reuters. “Power lines are a common cause of fires during wind events.” Berlant said some of the victims in northern California were asleep when the fast-moving fires broke out, igniting their homes before they could escape. At least 20,000 people remained under evacuation
as the fires raged largely unchecked for a third day, belching palls of smoke that engulfed the region and drifted south over the San Francisco Bay area, where some residents donned face masks. More than 550 people were still reported unaccounted for in Sonoma County on Wednesday morning, said Jennifer Laroque, a county emergency operations center spokeswoman. It was unclear how many of the missing might be fire victims rather than evacuees who merely failed to check in with authorities. Officials urged displaced residents to let their family members know they were safe.

Spain gives Catalan leader 8 days to drop independence
MADRID - Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy on Wednesday gave the Catalan government eight days to drop an independence bid, failing which he would suspend Catalonia’s political autonomy and rule the region directly. His move could deepen the confrontation between Madrid and the northeastern region but also signals a way out of Spain’s biggest political crisis since a failed military coup in 1981. Rajoy would probably call a snap regional election after activating Article 155 of the constitution that would allow him to sack the Catalan regional government. Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont issued a symbolic declaration of independence from Spain on Tuesday night but then immediately suspended it and called for negotiations with the Madrid government. “The cabinet has agreed this morning to formally request the Catalan government to confirm whether it has declared the independence of Catalonia, regardless of the deliberate confusion created over its implementation,” Rajoy said in a televised address after a cabinet meeting called to consider the government’s response. He later told Spain’s parliament the Catalan government had until Monday, Oct. 16 at 0800 GMT
to answer. If Puigdemont was to confirm he did declare independence, he would be given an additional three days to rectify it, until Thursday, Oct. 19 at 0800 GMT. Failing this, Article 155 would be triggered. It is not yet clear if the Catalan government will answer the requirement but it now faces a conundrum, analysts say. If Puigdemont says he did proclaim independence, the central government will step in. If he says he did not declare it, then far-left party CUP would probably withdraw its support for his minority government. “Rajoy has two objectives: if Puigdemont remains ambiguous, the pro-independence movement will get more fragmented; if Puigdemont insists on defending independence then Rajoy will be able to apply Article 155,” said Antonio Barroso, deputy director of the London-based research firm Teneo Intelligence. “Either way, Rajoy’s aim would be to first restore the rule of law in Catalonia and this could at some point lead to early elections in the region.” The stakes are high - losing Catalonia, which has its own language and culture, would deprive Spain of a fifth of its economic output and more than a quarter of exports. Blocks of some neighborhoods were nearly obliterated with nothing left but charred debris, broken walls, chimneys and the steel frames of burned-out cars. “It’s like driving through a war zone,” J.J. Murphy, 22, one of thousands of evacuees, said of the area around his home in the Sonoma Valley community of Glen Ellen. Murphy, five relatives, a bird, a dog and two cats piled into their camper van to flee on Monday, he said. “It’s crazy how in just a few hours a place I’ve recognized all my life I can’t recognize,” he said at a roadside food stop in the town of Sonoma. In the town of Napa on the first night of a blaze dubbed the Atlas fire, nearly 50 people who were in danger of being overrun by flames were rescued by the crews of two California Highway Patrol helicopters. The weather gave firefighters a bit of a respite on Tuesday as cooler temperatures, lower winds and coastal fog enabled them to make headway against the flames. BRUSSELS - Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi held talks with her Belgian counterpart Didier Reynders and Vice President of the European Commission for Foreign Relations and Security Policy Federica Mogherini to discuss various issues on Tuesday. “I have just held talks with Mogherini to discuss (various issues), ranging from palm oil to wood,” Marsudi informed reporters after accompanying Vice President Jusuf Kalla at a meeting with the Belgian king and queen. Marsudi is on a visit to Belgium to attend the opening of the Indonesia Europalia festival, in which Indonesia is a partner country. The festival will last until January 2018, Ance Maylany, first secretary for information, social, and cultural function of the Indonesian Embassy in Brussels, stated on Wednesday. At a meeting with Reynders, the two foreign ministers discussed various issues, including economic relations between the two countries. Indonesia and Belgium have the potential to enhance relations, particularly in the fields of trade and investment, Marsudi said. Trade between the two countries, which rose 16.66 percent in the first half of 2017, should be maintained and increased further, she remarked. Meanwhile, Reynders lauded
Indonesias active diplomacy, particularly in settling the humanitarian crisis in Myanmars western Rakhine state. Similar to any other European Union (EU) country, Belgium has agreed on the need to implement recommendations on humanitarian assistance for Rohingyas, Reynders said. The two foreign ministers also agreed to enhance economic relations, particularly in the fields of trade and investment. At a meeting with Mogherini, the Indonesian foreign minister stressed the meeting was aimed at exchanging views on strategic issues in the two regions, particularly the latest developments in North Korea and a referendum in Catalunya. Marsudi said Indonesia shared EUs viewpoint that the referendum is a domestic issue, and all related parties must comply with the rules of the law. The minister said she has established good communication with Mogherini; hence, Indonesia has received a good reference, particularly related to the EUs views and stance, when it takes a stand on various developments in the world. Touching on negative campaigns against palm oil, Marsudi expressed hope that the EU would offer fair treatment to Indonesian palm oil and wood, which have received certification. (ant)

Flash floods hit four villages in Banyumas
BANYUMAS - Flash floods submerged four villages in Sumpiuh Sub-district, Banyumas District, Central Java Province, on Wednesday, as a dike of the Reja River burst. The dike burst at 6:30 a.m. local time, and floods submerged the villages of Karanggedang, Karangpucung, Kemiri, and Nusadadi, Kusworo, head of the Banyumas disaster mitigation office, noted. Several rescuers have been deployed to help the flood victims, he added. In Karanggedang, at least 50 houses were flooded. Farming areas were also affected by the flooding. A landslide hit Watuagung Village in Tambak Subdistrict, Banyumas, on the same day, burying a house. Meanwhile, four people were reportedly killed after a landslide hit their house, which was located in Pangandaran District, West Java, on Saturday. The victims were identified as Arsih aged 55, Yuyun aged 35, five-year-old Aldi, and 10-month-old Andika, according to Head of the Fire and Disaster Management of Pangandaran District, Nana Ruhena,
here on Saturday. In addition to the fatalities, Rahman aged 40, Ari aged 14, and eight-month-old Anida sustained injuries, Ruhena stated. The four people were asleep when the landslide hit the area, closing road access. The ill-fated house was located in the landslideprone zone. If the baby’s umbilical cord is generally buried in the ground, residents at local village have a tradition to place it in coconut shell and hung on a tree at the special cemetery located behind the village. LONDON - Polish driver Robert Kubica completed a one-day test with Williams at Silverstone on Wednesday as he pushes for a Formula One comeback after a seven-year absence. The former champions said it had been a “successful day” with the 32-year-old driving a 2014-specification FW36 car at the British Grand Prix circuit. No lap times or any further information about the programme were provided. The Pole, who won in Canada with BMW Sauber in 2008, is scheduled for a fuller assessment at Budapest’s Hungaroring this month with Williams’ British reserve driver Paul di Resta also due to feature in that two-day test. Both are in the frame to replace 36-year-old Felipe Massa, should Williams decide not to renew the Brazilian’s contract. Kubica partially severed his right forearm in an horrific 2011 crash during a rally he entered for fun before the start of that Formula One season, and there are lingering doubts about his arm movement. However, he completed 142 laps of the Hungarian Grand Prix circuit in August in a test with Renault that revealed no “obvious roadblocks”, according to the French team. He is being assisted by Germany’s 2016 world champion Nico Rosberg, a friend and former rival who started his F1 career with Williams in 2006 before moving to Mercedes. “He showed in the Renault test he is ready and there’s no doubt about that anymore. Physically he is 100 percent in the car, so it’s a really exciting time,” Rosberg told Sky Sports television at the weekend in Japan. “He did double race stints with Renault and was always on the pace so there’s not that to prove. I think it’s more about getting to know each other and see if it’s a good fit.” Renault ended up taking Carlos Sainz on loan from Toro Rosso for next season as a replacement for Britain’s Jolyon Palmer, with the Spaniard joining the team already for next week’s U.S. Grand Prix in Austin, Texas. The Frenchman, whose job was to ensure the smooth running of FIFA, and in particular the World Cup, was right-hand man to now banned president Sepp Blatter before both were embroiled in a corruption scandal which swept soccer’s governing body in 2015 and led to a significant change in leadership. Valcke was found guilty by FIFA’s former ethics judge HansJoachim Eckert of misconduct over the sale of World Cup tickets, abuse of travel expenses, attempting to sell TV rights below their market value and destruction of evidence. After being sacked from his post in January 2016, he was initially banned for 12 years, which was reduced to 10 by FIFA’s own appeal committee last June. He has denied wrongdoing and is now appealing at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). “It takes years to create your reputation, it needs one second to destroy, that’s where I am,” he told reporters. “I am living in peace with my family, I remain
strong in my world and that is what I protect.” He said the hearing was “difficult”. “You have to be very clear with your statements,” he said. “I hope that the panel of the CAS will have got my point of view. “I often ask the question to myself, why such a desire from FIFA to destroy not only what has been done in the past and what has been done by myself?” Valcke, who has resettled near Barcelona, is still facing criminal proceedings in Switzerland. SONOMA - Firefighters facing a resurgence of high winds on Wednesday struggled to halt wildfires that have killed at least 23 people, destroyed 3,500 structures and left hundreds missing in chaotic evacuations across northern California’s wine country.
Nearly two dozen blazes spanning eight counties have charred around 170,000 acres (68,797 hectares). Flames erupted on Sunday night when gale force winds toppled power lines across the region, possibly igniting one of the deadliest wildfire outbreaks in California history. The entire town of Calistoga, a Napa Valley community of some 5,000 residents spared from advancing flames the first night of the fire, was ordered to evacuate on Wednesday evening, as the county sheriff’s office warned that conditions had worsened as the so-called Tubbs Fire was burning nearby. “The Tubbs Fire has made slow progress to this point but significant winds are still forecasted,” the city said in an online alert. Flames were spread rapidly by hot, dry “Diablo” winds - similar to Southern California’s Santa Ana winds - that blew into northern California toward the Pacific on Sunday night. The official cause of the fire has not been determined. But electric wires knocked down by those same winds may have sparked the conflagration, according to Daniel Berlant, spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire). “That is definitely a possibility,” he told Reuters. “Power lines are a common cause of fires during wind events.” Berlant said some of the victims in northern California were asleep when the fast-moving fires broke out, igniting their homes before they could escape. At least 20,000 people remained under evacuation
as the fires raged largely unchecked for a third day, belching palls of smoke that engulfed the region and drifted south over the San Francisco Bay area, where some residents donned face masks. More than 550 people were still reported unaccounted for in Sonoma County on Wednesday morning, said Jennifer Laroque, a county emergency operations center spokeswoman. It was unclear how many of the missing might be fire victims rather than evacuees who merely failed to check in with authorities. Spain gives Catalan leader 8 days to drop independence
MADRID - Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy on Wednesday gave the Catalan government eight days to drop an independence bid, failing which he would suspend Catalonia’s political autonomy and rule the region directly. His move could deepen the confrontation between Madrid and the northeastern region but also signals a way out of Spain’s biggest political crisis since a failed military coup in 1981. Rajoy would probably call a snap regional election after activating Article 155 of the constitution that would allow him to sack the Catalan regional government. Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont issued a symbolic declaration of independence from Spain on Tuesday night but then immediately suspended it and called for negotiations with the Madrid government. “The cabinet has agreed this morning to formally request the Catalan government to confirm whether it has declared the independence of Catalonia, regardless of the deliberate confusion created over its implementation,” Rajoy said in a televised address after a cabinet meeting called to consider the government’s response. He later told Spain’s parliament the Catalan government had until Monday, Oct. 16 at 0800 GMT
to answer. If Puigdemont was to confirm he did declare independence, he would be given an additional three days to rectify it, until Thursday, Oct. 19 at 0800 GMT. Failing this, Article 155 would be triggered. It is not yet clear if the Catalan government will answer the requirement but it now faces a conundrum, analysts say. If Puigdemont says he did proclaim independence, the central government will step in. If he says he did not declare it, then far-left party CUP would probably withdraw its support for his minority government. “Rajoy has two objectives: if Puigdemont remains ambiguous, the pro-independence movement will get more fragmented; if Puigdemont insists on defending independence then Rajoy will be able to apply Article 155,” said Antonio Barroso, deputy director of the London-based research firm Teneo Intelligence. “Either way, Rajoy’s aim would be to first restore the rule of law in Catalonia and this could at some point lead to early elections in the region.” The stakes are high - losing Catalonia, which has its own language and culture, would deprive Spain of a fifth of its economic output and more than a quarter of exports. Murphy, 22, one of thousands of evacuees, said of the area around his home in the Sonoma Valley community of Glen Ellen. Murphy, five relatives, a bird, a dog and two cats piled into their camper van to flee on Monday, he said. “It’s crazy how in just a few hours a place I’ve recognized all my life I can’t recognize,” he said at a roadside food stop in the town of Sonoma. In the town of Napa on the first night of a blaze dubbed the Atlas fire, nearly 50 people who were in danger of being overrun by flames were rescued by the crews of two California Highway Patrol helicopters. The weather gave firefighters a bit of a respite on Tuesday as cooler temperatures, lower winds and coastal fog enabled them to make headway against the flames. Indonesian, Belgian foreign ministers discuss palm oil, wood issues
BRUSSELS - Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi held talks with her Belgian counterpart Didier Reynders and Vice President of the European Commission for Foreign Relations and Security Policy Federica Mogherini to discuss various issues on Tuesday. “I have just held talks with Mogherini to discuss (various issues), ranging from palm oil to wood,” Marsudi informed reporters after accompanying Vice President Jusuf Kalla at a meeting with the Belgian king and queen. Marsudi is on a visit to Belgium to attend the opening of the Indonesia Europalia festival, in which Indonesia is a partner country. The festival will last until January 2018, Ance Maylany, first secretary for information, social, and cultural function of the Indonesian Embassy in Brussels, stated on Wednesday. At a meeting with Reynders, the two foreign ministers discussed various issues, including economic relations between the two countries. Indonesia and Belgium have the potential to enhance relations, particularly in the fields of trade and investment, Marsudi said. Flash floods hit four villages in Banyumas
BANYUMAS - Flash floods submerged four villages in Sumpiuh Sub-district, Banyumas District, Central Java Province, on Wednesday, as a dike of the Reja River burst. The dike burst at 6:30 a.m. local time, and floods submerged the villages of Karanggedang, Karangpucung, Kemiri, and Nusadadi, Kusworo, head of the Banyumas disaster mitigation office, noted. Several rescuers have been deployed to help the flood victims, he added. In Karanggedang, at least 50 houses were flooded. Farming areas were also affected by the flooding. A landslide hit Watuagung Village in Tambak Subdistrict, Banyumas, on the same day, burying a house. Meanwhile, four people were reportedly killed after a landslide hit their house, which was located in Pangandaran District, West Java, on Saturday. The victims were identified as Arsih aged 55, Yuyun aged 35, five-year-old Aldi, and 10-month-old Andika, according to Head of the Fire and Disaster Management of Pangandaran District, Nana Ruhena,

CAIRO - A new Egyptian decree meant to combat inflation by forcing food producers to put price tags on their products or face jail time risks increasing pressure on an industry already squeezed by austerity measures, food manufacturers said. Annual inflation is currently running above 30 percent, putting a tight squeeze on people’s spending power, but the government has relatively few options for cracking down on consumer prices. The new price tag decree, published in the official gazette on Tuesday, stipulates that violations could result in jail sentences of up to five years, fines and confiscations. “We don’t want to scare the market. This is not an Egyptian invention. All countries try to regulate their markets to protect (citizens) from the greed of some traders,” said supply ministry spokesman Mamdouh Ramadan. “It’s not compulsory pricing.” But manufacturers and economists dismissed the measure as ineffective or simply a misguided attempt by the government to show it was doing something to combat inflation when it was really stripping the market of needed competitiveness and flexibility. “This contradicts the mode of operations of many factories and results in complications in the production process,” said Hani Berzi, the chairman of Edita Food Industries, one of the country’s largest food producers. The Fed minutes on Wednesday showed many policymakers still felt that another rate increase this year “was likely to be warranted” but several noted that additional tightening was dependent on upcoming inflation data.
“The FOMC minutes indicated that the board was still profoundly divided about the slow pick up in prices,” Stephen Innes, head of trading in Asia-Pacific at Oanda, said in a note. MANGUPURA — Badung justice team cracked down on 28 unlicensed spa outlets in Kuta area on Wednesday (Oct. 11). Of this number, most spas are located along the Jalan Kartika Plaza and Pantai Kuta, Jalan Legian and Jalan Patih Jelantik namely 15 outlets.
Eight other outlets are located on Jalan Bakung Sari, Jalan Raya Kuta and Jalan Dewi while five outlets on Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai and Jalan Sunset Road. When cracking down, the Justice Team is also supported by Indonesian army, national police, tourism office, social agency, regional development planning board (Bappeda), integrated licensing office, legal and public relations, Badung regional secretary, Kuta subdistrict and village authorities. According to Chief of Badung Municipal Police, who is also chairman of Badung Justice Team, IGAK Surya Negara, the raid is done as a measure for data collection and information seeking related to business. If found having no permission in the raid, it will be issued the summons and the owners are asked to make a statement to immediately submit their permit. For now, in enforcing the rules, Surya Negara did more preventive and persuasive efforts. Nevertheless, he will take firm action if the reprimand given is ignored. BANGLI — The increasing status of Mount Agung in Karangasem since almost two weeks resulted in the decrease in the number of tourist visit to Bangli. Head of the Bangli Tourism Office, Wayan Adnyana, mentioned the decline in tourist arrivals to Bangli reaches 20 percent. When met in his office on Wednesday (Oct. 11), he said that before the increase of the status of Mount Agung, tourist visits to Bangli per day reached 2,500 people. However, since the increase to the warning status, the visit began to decrease to the range of 20 percent.
Adnyana explained that Bangli region is actually far enough from Mount Agung. YANGON - Rohingya Muslims are not native to Myanmar, the army chief told the U.S. ambassador in a meeting in which he apparently did not address accusations of abuses by his men and said media was complicit in exaggerating the number of refugees fleeing. Senior General Min Aung Hlaing gave his most extensive account of the Rohingya refugee crisis aimed at an international audience in the meeting with Ambassador Scot Marciel, according to a report posted on his Facebook page. The general is the most powerful person in Buddhist-majority Myanmar and his apparently uncompromising stance would indicate little sensitivity about the military’s image over a crisis that has drawn international condemnation and raised questions about a transition to democracy under Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. The military campaign is popular in Myanmar, where there is little sympathy for the Rohingya, and where Buddhist nationalism has surged. Min Aung Hlaing, referring to Rohingya by the term “Bengali”, which they regard as derogatory, said British colonialists were responsible for the problem. “The Bengalis were not taken into the country by Myanmar, but by the colonialists,” he told Marciel, according to the account of the meeting posted on Thursday. “They are not the natives, and the records prove that they were not
even called Rohingya but just Bengalis during the colonial period.” The U.N. human rights office said on Wednesday Myanmar security forces had brutally driven out half a million Rohingya from northern Rakhine state to Bangladesh, torching their homes, crops and villages to prevent them from returning. Italian fashion house Gucci to stop using fur
PARIS - Italy’s Gucci will stop using fur in its designs from next year, joining a growing number of fashion houses looking at alternatives amid pressure from animal rights activists and changing consumer tastes. Gucci, part of Paris-based luxury conglomerate Kering , has seen its sales rise over the past two years under creative director Alessandro Michele. Marco Bizzarri, Gucci’s chief executive, said the brand would drop fur starting from its spring and summer 2018 collection, adding that the decision had been taken alongside Michele.
“In selecting a new creative director I wanted to find someone who shared a belief in the importance of the same values,” Bizzarri said. Gucci, which has produced fur-lined loafers and luxurious mink fur coats in the past, is the latest label or major retailer to stop using fur. In June, Yoox Net-A-Porter, a multi-brand online luxury retailer, adopted a fur-free policy on accessories and clothing sold on the site. Road to airport cleared of parking
MANGUPURA — The underpass project at the roundabout of the I Gusti Ngurah Rai statue on Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai, Kuta, Badung, will be worked on in the near future. Therefore, the Directorate of Traffic Affairs of Bali Police will apply traffic engineering, especially on the route to Ngurah Rai Airport. As planned, the route from the roundabout to the airport will be completely closed. All vehicles will be diverted to Jalan Raya Kuta, Jalan Sunset Road, Jalan Dewi Sri and Jalan Raya Tuban and all parking will be prohibited. In addition, personnel of the highway patrol, directorate of Bali police traffic affairs have prepared the pathways by giving an appeal to the public not to park their vehicles along the alternative roads to the airport. Director of Bali Police Traffic Affairs, Anak Agung Made Sudana, instructed his staff to find the right solution to overcome traffic jams. “The project is planned to start on October 17. One of our efforts is to prevent illegal parking as a first step in preventing traffic jams. When the project is in progress, our members will continuously monitor the smoothness of the lane. Then, the lane heading to the airport must be entirely free of parked vehicles”, said Sudana on Tuesday (Oct. 10). Sudana accompanied his staff in clearing the parked cars and even helped install the resticted parking ropes.
Sudana affirmed that parking must be dealt with as traffic in Kuta is already constricted. Less than orderly driving and indiscriminate parking are major factors that cause traffic congestion, he said. “We are working with members of traffic affairs of Kuta Police and Denpasar Police. We will also be preventing parking in front of the customary market of Kuta village”, he added. The road project will impact traffic as in addition to the already large volume of vehicles this road is also used to access Ngurah Rai International Airport, Nusa Dua, Uluwatu and Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK). In order to make the traffic engineering plan public, Sudana attended a meeting in the multipurpose building of LPD Tuban, Badung to discuss the underpass construction project. Logistics coordinator at Rendang post, I Wayan Sudiarta, said on Tuesday (Oct. 10) that they are facing major obstacles in terms of clean water supplies. The availability of clean water has reached a critical point with drinking water having been runnning extremely low for a few days already. “Right now, we very much need a supply of clean water. Moreover, the toilets have been exuding a stench for the last week as there is no water to flush”, he explained. He added the water supply from the municipality waterworks (PDAM) is indeed available, however it is not beeing channeled everyday. Previously, the provincial public works had planned to provide clean water and officers even came down to survey the situation. Unfortunately this aid has yet to reach the evacuation post In addition to needing clean water itself, Sudiarta is hoping for a water storage tank that can be used to store extra water when the municipal waterworks is running. Evacuees clearly need water everyday, but now they have none. “We really hope for some help.
Hopefully, we will be provided with water tanks to store clean water” he said in despair. Sudiarta further explained that this evacuation post also needs medicines and that a medical post needs to be established with doctors and nurses on duty. The stamina of the disaster relief officers and volunteers has started to decline. A number of evacuees have fallen ill due to the extreme weather conditions. With health personnel on duty, evacuees can receive immediate treatment. “At first, we were still receiving donations of medicines. People who brought food also brought medical supplies, but now there is no longer such aid. People who fall ill are still being handled at the Rendang Health Center”, he explained. When asked about food supplies, Sudiarta siad that so far it remains sufficient, but that vegetables are very much needed as the evacuees have been eating nothing but noodles for many days. “We really need vegetable, because the evacuees have been eating instant noodles for three weeks now”, Sudiarta who added that tarpaulin are also needed to make temporary walls so that people can stay dry when it rains. Sudiarta explained that the request for food and other supplies is made to the Tanah Ampo main post every four days but is also adapted to the stocks at the Redang evacuation post. “ When stocks run low, we request supplies every two days. In addition to the burden on village fund management that is reaching in to the billions of rupiahs, the headmen are also responsible for handling all the needs of the evacuees. Some headmen are now bearing a debt after paying out large sums to deal with the evacuees and are now becoming quite stressed as the debt has not been paid by the government. Headman of Telaga Tawang, Sideman, Byoman Sukarma is one the headmen who is facing such conditions. He explained that when the evacuees first arrived there were no provisions for them and every village head was directed to buy the nearest available provisions
using debt if need be. However, the local government and task-force at the Tanah Ampo Command Post were subsequently not willing to reimburse the invoice for the total expenditure for weeks that was submitted. “At that time, after the announcement of the warnign status of Moutn Agung on the night of September 22, people were very panicky. Residents from Selat, Peringsari and North Duda village, I the subdistrict of Selat fled to Telaga Tawang Village. We were directed by the local government to immediately provide for the needs of the evacuees from September 23-25th by taking debt. Now that we have submitted the total for the expenditures, no one is willing to
reimburse this debt that we took. We are tired and are being given the runaround”, said headman of Telaga Tawang, Nyoman Sukarma, on Wednesday (Oct. 11). The total expenditure at that time reached about IDR 15 million. Sukarma admitted that he feels uneasy with the stall owners who keep asking when they will be paid. Fortunately, on the fourth day of evacuation, volunteers and other private parties brought donations to the evacuation posts in the village. village. Eminem rebukes ‘racist’ Donald Trump in awards show rap LOS ANGELES - Rapper Eminem derided U.S. President Donald Trump as a racist and a reckless leader in a rap video that aired on Tuesday night during the Black Entertainment Television Hip Hop Awards. Eminem told his fans in the fourminute unaccompanied vocal they must choose whether to support him or the president. “Racism is the only thing that he’s fantastic for,” Eminem rapped in the video that was taped on Friday in a Detroit parking garage. Trump has previously dismissed accusations of racism. For example, he said in February he is “the least racist person.” Representatives for the White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment about Eminem’s rap, which was one of the most watched videos on YouTube early on Wednesday. The rap also mentioned Barack
Obama, Trump’s predecessor in the White House, and Hillary Clinton, Trump’s Democratic rival in last year’s presidential election. “But we better give Obama props / ‘cause what we got in office now is a kamikaze / that’ll probably cause a nuclear holocaust,” Eminem rapped. Eminem rebuked Trump for his strong criticism of National Football League players who kneel during the national anthem before games. Hulk, the muscle-bound, largerthan-life green alter-ego of scientist Bruce Banner, appears in the upcoming “Thor: Ragnarok,” out in U.S. theaters on Nov. 3, as a gladiator trapped on a futuristic planet and forced to fight Thor. The Hulk will also appear in 2018’s “Avengers: Infinity War” and its sequel, 2019’s yet-to-betitled Avengers 4. “We’ve taken the arc of a standalone Hulk movie and put it into those three movies, consciously,” Ruffalo said.
Ruffalo, who has spent more time as scientist Banner than as the Hulk in the past two Avengers films, said he relished the opportunity to be in character as the Hulk for the majority of “Thor: Ragnarok.” “This movie is about just breaking free of the forms and rules, and so I got to break free from what we thought Hulk was to a slightly more fleshed-out character,” he said. The Hulk, who first appeared in comics in 1962, has had his own standalone television shows and movies in the past, notably 2003’s
“Hulk” and 2008’s “The Incredible Hulk” films, both from Universal Pictures. The cinematic rights to Marvel’s Hulk superhero are owned by Comcast Corp’s Universal Pictures, while Walt Disney Co owns Marvel studios and is behind the current success of the superhero movie franchise. “Ultimately Universal owns the rights there. 98 percent of Bali`s tourist attractions located in safe zone
JAKARTA - Despite Mount Agung showing increased activity, 98 percent of the tourist attractions on Bali Island remain safe for visit, the Bali Tourism Board stated. “According to information from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, 98 percent of the tourist areas remain safe in Bali, even if Mount Agung erupts,” Dewa Gede Ngurah Byomantara, head of the Boards Bali Tourism Hospitality Division 3, was quoted as saying on the official website of the Indonesian Foreign Ministry, here, Wednesday. If the volcano were to erupt, only two percent of Balis tourist attractions -- Besakih, Tulamben, and Tirta Gangga -- would be affected. “Kuta, Ubud, Nusa Dua, and Sanur are located far from Mount Agung. Until now, we believe that the area beyond 12 kilometers from Mount Agungs crater remains safe,” he added.
The Bali provincial administration has taken precautionary measures to tackle the spread of false news or hoax about the volcanic activity of Mount Agung and is ready to provide latest updates on the situation of the volcano. If Mount Agung erupts, the tourism board will provide various facilities to tourists, including free
accommodations and transportation to the airport. Earlier, Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika had convinced tourists to visit the resort island without hesitation, adding that it remains safe and conducive despite the increased activity of Mount Agung, which is located in Karangasem District, Bali Island.
The governor made assurance during a meeting with tourism stakeholders, such as travel operators, in Denpasar, Bali, on Oct 3. If Mount Agung erupts, it will have a direct impact on only 28 villages located within a radius of 12 kilometers from the volcanos crater. Another assurance was given by Tourism Minister Arief Yahya, who informed the international public that Bali remains safe for visits, despite the alert status of Mount Agung being raised. “Bali remains safe for tourist visits by both domestic and foreign travellers. We have taken various
anticipatory measures and are well prepared in case of an eruption,” he had said on Oct 5.
