NEW YORK - Oscar-winner Leonardo DiCaprio’s charitable foundation would return gifts or donations made to him or his ventures if they were found to have come from Malaysian wealth fund 1MDB, which is being investigated on money laundering allegations, his representatives said on Tuesday.

In his first comment on the multinational probe into the fund, DiCaprio said he was cooperating with U.S. authorities to determine if money had come from questionable sources, according to the statement.

In July a Hollywood production company was accused in a U.S. civil lawsuit of using $100 million that prosecutors said had been diverted from the 1MDB fund to finance DiCaprio’s 2013 film “The Wolf of Wall Street,” in which he starred.

In a statement on Tuesday, DiCaprio’s representatives said he had first learned of the probe through press reports in July.

Indonesian authorities are increasingly worried about a resurgence in radicalism in Southeast Asia’s largest economy, driven in part by a new generation of militants inspired by Islamic State.

“Two of (the police) were stabbed in the arm and chest. Then the attacker walked around showing off his weapon, walking to the police post and shouting ‘Allahu akbar’ (God is greatest),” Mohammad Isa Ansori, deputy police chief of Tangerang district, told Reuters.

The attacker, who was born in 1994 and unemployed, was believed to be a member of Indonesian militant group Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), which supports Islamic State. The umbrella organisation, formed last year through an alliance of splinter groups backing Islamic State, is led by jailed Islamist cleric Aman Abdurrahman, who is serving a nine-year prison sentence for aiding

a militant training camp.

Thursday’s assault comes after a series of Islamic State-linked attacks beginning in January when four militants mounted a gun and bomb attack in Jakarta. Eight people were killed, including the militants. In July, a militant blew himself up at a police station in the town of Solo, injuring one officer.

Police in August arrested Islamic State supporters plotting to launch a rocket at Singapore’s Marina Bay casino resort area using a boat from the nearby Indonesian island of Batam. The vast majority of Indonesia’s 250 million people practise a moderate form of Islam. Small militant groups that have periodically mounted attacks against the state and foreigners have been largely disbanded or driven underground.

From page 1 At a the number of vacant land adjoining to the landfill border, hundreds of cattle belonging to local residents gather in groups of about 10- 20 heads. Some are soaking in black water, while some other are sheltering under trees that only some can grow up.

Other groups continue to enjoy the summer heat of the sun while chewing food.

Gede Mekar, a middle-aged man helping his son-in-law keep cattle and pigs at the Suwung landfill, revealed that it is much easier to raise cattle at the landfill than at his home village in Karangasem.

He said that his son-in-law, a local resident, has about 40 cows. Just by releasing, the cows are able to look for fodder by themselves.

His son-in-law does not need to make permanent cowshed as breeders at villages. Besides, he does not need to mow grass for fodder, either. Every morning, the cows go

up to the landfill to look for fodder. Around 07:00 until 08:00, the cattle have come back down. “In the afternoon, they go back up to look for fodder,” said Gede Mekar when met in the pigpen belonging to his son-in-law.

Then, how does he recognize his cattle since there are hundreds of cattle let roam around at the landfill? “Each owner has given a special sign on the body of their cows. One of them is marked with neck strap or with color on cow’s ear. Obviously they never get difficulty to recognize theirs,” he said.

Should there be any mistaken of loading (selling) the cow, the breeders in the neighborhood will not make it a problem. They just need to admit their fault and eventually replace with their own cow. The case is closed. “Loading cow wrongly has once occurred, but it was then replaced and it is considered as an accident. But when happening repeatedly, it is a different case,” he explained.

He said that each breeder has different number of cows grazed at

the landfill. It can be dozens, tens or hundreds of heads. He mentioned that one of the breeders has 300 cows at the landfill. Their cows often gather in groups, so that it is not difficult to recognize their cows. “So, I consider it easy to keep cows at this landfill. It is much different from farmers at villages that should look for grass and make a cowshed, so that raising two heads only is a hassle,” he said.

Previously, hamlet chief of Pesanggaran governing the area of Suwung landfill, Wayan Widiada, said the activities of people raising cattle and pigs around the landfill is actually the result of the presence of the landfill. Approximately 60 families living around the landfill have no other choice of livelihood.

“Raising cattle and pigs is a choice because it is not possible for them to pursue other activities.

We were lucky because there are still people that can have activities around the landfill,” he said when receiving the PDI-P Faction of the Denpasar House of Representatives, some time ago. (ara)

‘Heaven Hill’ becomes the icon of Nampo Hill agrotourism

This is the hill top making netizens curious. Its natural beauty causes many travelers, especially nature lovers, to chase although it is located far above the Nampo Hill, Jungutan village, Bebandem, Karangasem. Recently, nature tourism becomes a trend in the society amid the saturation due to those of very same tourism activities.

“The busiest visit occurs on weekend reaching about hundreds of people. Visitors say they want to find a new place with convenient atmosphere,” said Ketut Latra, the owner of Bukit Nampo agrotourism, when met at the location, Tuesday (Oct. 18).

Latra is no longer strange figure in the field of agriculture and plantation. He has got a myriad of local and national awards due to his diligence in agriculture and plantation. He told that initially the hill area of about two hectares was the same as the other hill tops.

At the beginning, he built small shacks as resting place. But, seeing the potential of the beautiful nature, the land was gradually arranged. Local agriculture agency also supports his effort.

With this icon, he confessed to be making the concept of Bukit Nampo agrotourism equipped with training base camp for agriculture and forestry. So far, he sees there is no place for apprenticeship training, hatchery, processing up to post-harvest management of agribusiness and farmer group. Currently, the Bukit Nampo agrotourism is only

managed by one farmer group, namely the Tumpang Lestari farmer group. The farmer group manages the Bukit Nampo agrotourism spreading across the area of 75 hectares with snakefruit as the main product.

“Right now, the Bukit Nampo agrotourism has been included in the agropolitan program of the Ministry of Public Works and Housing Affairs. Contribution of this program is the provision of assistance in the form of road access in three phases,” he said.

Latra hoped the icon of ‘Heaven Hill’ can become a cheap alternative tourism with knowledge about agriculture and plantations.

Right now, visitors to this object just need to pay voluntary donation. Since the launch on April 19 with the regent of Karangasem, the two hectares of land at this object is being setup. This year, it is focused on structuring the land contour. Next year it will be resumed with the arrangement of plantation and the park.

Ultimately, he will work on the supporting infrastructure to the tourist attraction becoming the mainstay of Karangasem. (gik)

Buleleng Kite-Cutting Festival held on October 27-28

SINGARAJA - A number of creativities owned by young generation of Buleleng can improve its existence. One of them is the implementation of the Buleleng Kite-Cutting (Mekorot) Festival 2016. The term is synonymous with kite contest. The winner is the participants considered to have cut the most enemy’s kite ropes.

“Concept of this Buleleng kitecutting festival is intended for cultural preservation, in this case playing kite. Vivacity of the competition and sportsmanship in playing kite is combined with togetherness. By and large, the kite-cutting is no longer carried out since our childhood, so that it is held for the sustainability,” said Committee Chairman of the Buleleng Kite-Cutting Festival,

Splendor of this event does only come from the fans of kite-cutting in Buleleng. participant to reach 1,000 people and takes place on October 27-28 at Major Metra Square, Singaraja,” he said.

The kite-cutting event will look for the winner or the so-called ‘the king of kite-cutting’ and symbolically the winner will be awarded a kite-cutting ring on the peak of the activity. The winners will be sought from the first to the fourth.

Delayed twice by judges, legal counsel disappointed

DENPASAR - After being picked up at Kerobokan Prison to undergo the trial with the agenda of hearing the verdict or sentence, the pedophile defendant Robert Andrew Fiddes Ellis failed to undergo the trial of verdict. On Tuesday (Oct. 18), before the trial the judges led by Wayan Sukanila claimed to have not completed the verdict, he postponed it until next week.

“Naturally, I am very disappointed. It is for the second time for the judge to delay the trial,” said legal counsel of Robert, Yanuar Nahak, shortly after the defendant was taken to the detention room of the Denpasar District Court. In the meantime, defendant Robert also asked the reason why the sentence was postponed twice.

His legal counsel tried to explain that the judge was not ready on the verdict.

Previously, Robert was sentenced by the prosecutor with 16 years imprisonment. In addition, the defendant is also required to pay a fine of IDR 2 billion with the subsidiary of eight months in prison. In the defense, the defendant’s legal counsel team asked so that the defendant could be released from the prosecution.

One of the reasons is the prosecutor’s demand that is considered legally defect. According

to Yanuar, he is charged with Article 76E, in conjunction with Article 82, paragraph (1) Law No 35/2014, on the amendments to the Law No.23/2002 in conjunction with Article 65 paragraph (1) of Criminal Code on child protection only sentencing 15 years in prison. “However, the prosecutor demanded 16 years. “Robert is a foreigner so that he could not find children by himself.

Surely there are people helping bring the children to him. So, the position of Robert here is as the victim,” he quibbled. On that account, he asked that his client accused of committing pedophilia in Bali could be freed.

Teenager grabs a tourist to fall down MANGUPURA - Two students from Ukraine, Marasik Alina, 22, and Bulyhina Marila, 17, became the target of grabbing on Jalan Poppies II Gang Ronta, Kuta, Wednesday (Oct. 12). The culprits are grabber gang remaining teenagers with the initials NM, 16, and KB, 12, from Karangasem.

When taking action, the suspects approached the victim to fall down.

Chief of Kuta Police, Wayan Sumara, said on Wednesday (Oct. 19) that the incident happened at 04:00. At that time, Marasik was riding a Honda Scoopy motorcycle piggybacking Bulyhina and passing

Finally, identity of the motorcycle owner could be tracked with the address on Jalan Gunung Batur, Denpasar. “The suspect borrowing the motorcycle for taking action was finally arrested on Wednesday afternoon on Jalan Bumi Ayu, Denpasar. After yellow bridge collapses

Lembongan customary village will hold labuh gentuh ritual

SEMARAPURA - Lembongan customary village, Nusa Penida, finally made the decision after the collapse of the yellow bridge, Sunday afternoon (Oct. 16). After holding a meeting with customary apparatuses, village officials, community leaders and families of the dead victims at wantilan hall of Lembongan customary village, residents decided to hold labuh gentuh and pemarisudha bumi ritual.

The ritual is scheduled to be held at two locations namely at the collapsed yellow bridge and catus pata (central intersection) of Lembongan customary village. However, the pemarisudha bumi ritual is not held as soon as possible. This ritual will be held together with labuh gentuh in sasih kedasa or tenth month in Balinese calendar (April) 2017.

LONDON - Prime Minister Theresa May will come under pressure from other European Union leaders on Thursday to say what kind of deal she wants for Britain when it leaves the bloc.

JAKARTA — An Indonesian court on Thursday sentenced an Islamic militant to 10 years in prison for his involvement in a suicide bombing and gun attack in the capital Jakarta earlier this year.

May, attending her first EU summit since becoming prime minister in July, has so far given only glimpses of her vision for Britain’s future relationship with the EU. Below is a summary of the most important issues in the negotiations which are due to start by March next year.

MIGRATION About half the immigrants coming to Britain are from the EU. May wants to cut total net migration to below 100,000 a year from more than 300,000 now, something that would require tough controls. Most economists say migration has helped Britain’s economy although wages for lower-paid workers have taken a small hit.

May has ruled out the introduction of a points-based system modelled on the one used by Australia to select migrants, preferring a system that allows in the workers most needed by British employers. Since then, government ministers have said they want to ensure highly skilled workers can continue to move to Britain.

But EU leaders are unlikely to turn a blind eye to any restrictions on free movement of workers from the bloc. They fear that any concession to Britain would lead other states to demand similar deals, ultimately unraveling the Union.

Banks could lose their ability to offer services across the bloc from London, a system known as passporting. If they shift some of their operations to other EU states, it could hurt British tax revenues at a time when the country’s public finances are still likely to be in the red.

One battle could be over the ability of London to continue serving as the main centre for the clearing of derivatives denominated in euros, something it has fought in the EU courts to protect but may be unable to defend once outside the bloc.

BUDGET The pro-Brexit campaign before June’s referendum argued that once outside the EU, Britain would no longer have to make contributions to the bloc’s budget, which the UK Statistics Authority estimated at about 7 billion pounds a year.

But Britain might still have to pay into the EU budget in order to maintain access for its financial services industry or other key sectors. Norway and Switzerland both pay into the EU budget to have preferential access to the EU market.

CUSTOMS UNION VS TRADE DEALS Britain could seek to remain part of the EU’s customs union once it is no longer a formal member of the bloc. The customs union includes non-EU Turkey, Andorra and San Marino who trade freely with the bloc and share its common external tariffs. But if Britain opted to stay in the customs union, it could complicate attempts to strike free trade deals with other countries around the world, a central argument of the Brexit campaign.

British finance minister Philip Hammond said on Wednesday he was sensitive to the potential problems for British exporters, especially those involved in cross-border supply chains, should the country end up outside the customs union.

MECHANICS OF NEGOTIATION May has said she will launch the formal, two-year process of negotiating Britain’s exit from the EU before the end of March 2017 and London wants to use the interim period to sound out European counterparts and decide its priorities for the talks.

So far, EU leaders have rebuffed attempts

by Britain to talk informally about the out-

lines of a final deal, something that would help London settle on its Brexit strategy.

After May triggers the exit process, the other 27 EU leaders will meet within a month or two to draft instructions for the European Commission for the negotiations. Those talks will be led on the EU side by Michel Barnier of France, who had tense relationship with London when he was the Commission’s financial regulation chief from 2010 to 2014.

Diplomats in Brussels say two years will probably be enough to deal with the basic divorce, including dividing up the EU budget, EU assets and tricky stuff like the substantial future liabilities for paying the pensions of British EU staff.

But a new relationship, including trade ties, will probably take many more years, requiring some kind of transition agreement so that Britain is not left in limbo.

Britain has an incentive to wrap up the deal within the two-year time-frame to appease voters and influential Eurosceptic lawmakers before a national election due in May 2020. The EU has a strong incentive to wrap up the final exit before the next European Parliament elections in 2019, normally in May.(rtr)

SEMARANG - An original Indonesian herbal medicine, Jamu, will be marketed abroad in the Middle Eastern and ASEAN regions, the chairman of the Jamu Association of Central Java, Nyoto Wardoyo, said here on Wednesday.

Jamu is made from natural materials, such as roots, bark, flowers, seeds, leaves and fruits.

“Indonesias ambassadors in various countries have started to introduce Jamu to other countries, such as Arab nations and Hongkong,” he

informed.

According to him, Jamu is in demand in many countries because they have realized that its health benefits.

“Jamu is well known for its nutritional value. Demand for the product is rising and the exports have increased,” he reiterated.

He also appreciated the fact that the government is encouraging the herbal medicine industry to progress. “Entrepreneurs expect expeditious grant of a license.

Once we complete all the require-

ments, we want the government to immediately issue a permit,” he stressed.

He hoped for better synergy between farmers, entrepreneurs and university researchers to develop Jamu products. He also hoped that Jamu products could be a part of the BPJS health program.

“When people suffer mild colds, coughs or flu, the doctors can treat them with Jamu,” he underlined.

Thanks to these efforts, the usage of Jamu is expected to rise at home as well as abroad.(ant)

Dodi Suridi, 23, was captured a day after the Jan. 14 attack that killed eight people including four militants, who police said claimed allegiance to the Islamic State group.

Judge Achmad Fauzi, who presided over the trial at the West Jakarta District Court, said Suridi was guilty of violating Indonesia’s anti-terror law by supplying materials used to prepare bombs that were used in the attack.

About 40 militants have been arrested in connection with the attack that began with a suicide bombing inside a Starbucks cafe.

In a separate trial at the same court, Ali Hamka, 48, was sentenced Thursday to four years in prison for his ultimately unsuccessful attempts to procure guns and ammunition for the attack. Suridi knew a suicide bombing would take place but did not know when and where, according to Fauzi. He also participated in meetings aimed at recruiting suicide bombers.

Suridi showed no remorse in the court room. He said he would not appeal and called his sentence the “risk of being a terrorist.” Prosecutors had demanded a 10-year sentence.

IS’s deadly attacks in the Middle East and Europe and the group’s online propaganda have helped to recruit a tiny minority of Indonesians to their cause. Authorities say several hundred Indonesians also have traveled to Syria to fight with IS. But experts say their capacity to mount successful attacks within Indonesia is still limited.

Recent plots have failed completely, including a would-be bombing of a church in Medan on Sumatra and an attack on a police complex in Solo on Java that killed only the suicide bomber.

On Thursday, a man with an IS symbol was shot to death after attacking police on the outskirts of Jakarta with a machete and pipe bombs. Three police officers were injured in the attack.(ap)

“The term strategic means it is strategic for defence and security as well as an entry gate for domestic and overseas arrivals,” he said.

An island on the northernmost Indonesian territory, Miangas is

only 48 sea miles from the Philippines, though it is 129 sea miles from Meonguange, the capital of Talaud district, and 227 sea miles from Manado.

“Miangas is very close to our neighbour, the Philippines. We will show them that we care for and build Indonesias verandah well and are proud of it,” Jokowi said.

MEXICALI - Camped in migrant centers, broken-down rooms of a dingy, semi-derelict hotel and on church floors, thousands of Haitians desperate to enter the United States are in limbo and exposed to crime in dangerous border neighborhoods of Mexico.

The hard-bitten fringes of Tijuana and Mexicali are currently believed to house some 5,000 Haitians, and about 300 more are arriving daily after an arduous journey from Brazil, Mexican official numbers show.

The Haitians are not yet trying to slip illegally through the desert brush into the United States.

Instead, they will mostly make asylum pleas to U.S. border officials.

But U.S. migration facilities are overwhelmed. Almost three times more Haitians arrive every day than are granted interviews, the Mexican government says, creating a bottleneck and a fast swelling border population.

Thousands more are still making their way north in a movement of people bound to exacerbate the

backlog in the final weeks of a U.S. presidential campaign that has focused heavily on immigration and the Mexican border.

Mexico’s established migrant shelters are unable to cope with the rapidly rising numbers, so five Protestant churches have opened their doors to the new arrivals in recent days, and in Mexicali’s red-light zone a flop house for deportees and drug addicts has been converted by a migrant activist into cheap and dirty digs for the Haitians. It has no glass in its windows.

In the streets outside, locals smoke meth and a glue mixture called “cement” to get high. In Tijuana, small tent cities housing Haitians have sprung up on patches of wasteland.

Three Haitians told Reuters they had been mugged by local criminals. Rights activists say the newcomers are vulnerable to extortion and kidnapping by gangs who charge thousands of dollars to smuggle people into the United States. SEMARAPURA - Nusa Penida is one of the subdistrict territories from four subdistricts in the Klungkung Regency. Nusa Penida is the largest of three islands off the south eastern coast of Bali, the others being Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan. Totalling some 200 square kilometres, Nusa Penida is much larger than the better known Nusa Lembongan.

However, tourist infrastructure is very limited here. It is though an island of stunning natural rugged beauty, and tourism-related development plans have been rumoured and mooted to no effect for many years now. Due to a lack of natural fresh water, little is grown or produced on Nusa Penida, and even some basic foodstuffs come by boat from Bali.

Visitors should therefore expect higher prices than in Bali, and not bank on any tourism-related luxury items being available for purchase here. Plan accordingly. In 2004 the Friends of the National Park Foundation (FNPF) started an introduction program to Nusa Penida of the near-extinct Bali Starling (Leucopsar rothschildi). Hamilton, 33 points behind German team mate Nico Rosberg with four rounds remaining, is determined to give it his best shot on the track as well - even if it is looking an increasingly long one.

The Briton knows the odds are now stacked against him winning a fourth title this season, given that even winning all the remaining races will not be enough if Rosberg finishes second every time.

But the same bad luck that saw him retire with an engine failure while leading in Malaysia this month can also strike elsewhere.

“We’ve got four races left to make the most of it and that’s exactly what I plan to do. It’s just about hitting every race weekend as hard as I can, going all out for every win and seeing what happens from there,” said Hamilton.

“I’ll be holding nothing back out there.

of course, the title win last year. That was one of the highlights of my career, no doubt.

SINGAPORE - Angelique Kerber is the world number one in women’s tennis yet it remains a title she has yet to grow accustomed to after her meteoric rise to the summit.

Still a relatively new experience, the 28-yearold German reached the peak of the women’s game last month after landing her second grand slam title of the year at the U.S. Open, capping a stunning season for the left-hander from Bremen.

Kerber floated around the lower echelons of the top 10 for the last four years and did not even make the second week of a grand slam in 2015, but it all clicked in January.

A run to the final in Brisbane preceded a surprise upset win over Serena Williams to land the Australian Open title as the baseliner renowned for her strong defensive game finally realised her talent.

“All the experience from the last few years

came together this year. The belief in myself, I’ve grown up a little bit more this year,” she told Reuters of her new-found maturity.

“The victory in Australia, of course it’s great, I continued it the last few months and I’m here now as the best player of the year... and the world actually,” she added, chuckling as she corrected herself.

Kerber is guaranteed the year-end number one ranking after Williams pulled out of the $7 million season-ending WTA Finals in Singapore, which starts on Sunday, with a shoulder injury.

Kerber said she would “miss” the 22-times grand slam singles champion but did not offer a similar sentiment for Russia’s Maria Sharapova, who is scheduled to return to the circuit in April after her 15-month doping ban expires.

“We will see when she is coming back, I don’t know, I’m not thinking about this,” she replied, appearing keen to change the subject. (rtr)

ROME — At the age of 17, Gianluigi Donnarumma is already considered the heir apparent to Gianluigi Buffon. After only seven Serie A appearances, 18-year-old Manuel Locatelli is drawing comparisons to Andrea Pirlo. M’Baye Niang, a relative veteran at 21, is providing the kind of consistency at forward that Mario Balotelli couldn’t.

AC Milan is fully embracing a youth movement as it endures a third consecutive season out of European competition. In a league where the top clubs have had a tendency to rely on veterans and the odd Brazilian teenager, seeing so many young faces wearing the familiar Rossoneri colors is a novelty.

“There’s less fear in Italy now, even though some clubs still prefer veterans,” Niang said. “We’ve got the right mix. When you have great players that can win matches by themselves it throws the other

players off balance.”

The Milan side that beat Chievo Verona 3-1 Sunday was the youngest average team of the weekend in Serie A at 24 years, 231 days. Seven of the players were born in the 1990s — Donnarumma, Locatelli, Niang, Alessio Romagnoli, Suso, Mattia De Sciglio and Gianluca Lapadula.

“I don’t feel like a young player anymore. I’m nearly 22 and I’ve been a pro since I was 16,” Niang, who made his Ligue 1 debut with Caen in 2011, said in an interview with La Repubblica. “(De Sciglio

and I) have got to be examples for the actual kids, like Donnarumma and Locatelli.” Riding a five-match unbeaten streak, Milan is in third place, level on points with secondplace Roma.

Up next for Milan is a match against five-time defending champion Juventus on Saturday at the San Siro. It’s a rematch of last season’s Italian Cup final, which Juventus won 1-0 after extra time.

Milan hasn’t beaten Juventus since November 2012.

“It reminds me of Juve from a few years ago,” Buffon said of Milan, recalling Juve’s transformation after a 2006 match-fixing scandal that saw the Bianconeri relegated to Serie B. “They just need time and experience to improve.”

Bayern regains winning touch as forward trio shines

FRANKFURT — Carlo Ancelotti wanted a reaction from his players — and he got it.

Bayern Munich produced an emphatic performance in sweeping aside PSV Eindhoven 4-1 in the Champions League on Wednesday to end a three-match winless run.

Ancelotti came under some scrutiny after Bayern’s recent lethargic outings that began with a 1-0 loss at Atletico Madrid in the Champions League and continued with two draws in the Bundesliga. The coach, some critics said, was too lenient with his stars, giving them too much freedom after the strict-discipline approach of his predecessor Pep Guardiola.

There was a cosmetic change before Wednesday’s match in Munich — for the first time since he took over at the start of the season, Ancelotti had his team spend the night before a home game in a hotel.

More importantly, Ancelotti for the first time started with a forward line consisting of Arjen Robben on the right, Thomas Mueller on the left and Robert Lewandowski in the center, as he recovered from a calf problem.

All three scored and Robben also had a role in goals by the two teammates apart from notching the fourth, insurance goal with a rare header. The oft-injured winger tore apart the defense of his former team with his runs on the flank and trademark cuts inside.

“There is a little adjustment between the last coach and this coach,” Robben said. “I think it can only get better with time.” Before the match, Ancelotti said Bayern needed to change its attitude, not the players.

And the Italian was pleased with what he saw. “That was the reaction I expected from

the team. We played well,” Ancelotti said.

Bayern began dominating from kickoff and was up by one already in the 13th minute through Mueller.

“We were very determined from the start,” Mueller said. Mueller and Robben were constant threats, along with David Alaba’s piercing runs on the left.

“Thomas is a player that can play at any position,” Robben said of Mueller, who has failed to score in the Bundesliga yet in six appearances. But Mueller has two goals in the Champions League this season and is the highest-scoring German player in the competition with 38.

“I really have a good relationship with Thomas and really enjoy playing together with him. I hope we have fun together on the pitch for a long time to come,” Robben said.

Duty calls for combative Hamilton

SEMARAPURA - Nusa Penida is one of the subdistrict territories from four subdistricts in the Klungkung Regency. Nusa Penida is the largest of three islands off the south eastern coast of Bali, the others being Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan. Totalling some 200 square kilometres, Nusa Penida is much larger than the better known Nusa Lembongan.

However, tourist infrastructure is very limited here. It is though an island of stunning natural rugged beauty, and tourism-related development plans have been rumoured and mooted to no effect for many years now. Due to a lack of natural fresh water, little is grown or produced on Nusa Penida, and even some basic foodstuffs come by boat from Bali.

Visitors should therefore expect higher prices than in Bali, and not bank on any tourism-related luxury items being available for purchase here. Plan accordingly. In 2004 the Friends of the National Park Foundation (FNPF) started an introduction program to Nusa Penida of the near-extinct Bali Starling (Leucopsar rothschildi). AUSTIN - Lewis Hamilton will be starring in the next “Call of Duty” video game due out in November but the Formula One world champion has a real and more immediate fight on his hands in Texas this weekend.

The Mercedes driver, returning to the U.S. Grand Prix circuit where last year he won his third title, told 3.8 million followers on Twitter that he would be a character in the “Infinite Warfare” edition.

Hamilton, 33 points behind German team mate Nico Rosberg with four rounds remaining, is determined to give it his best shot on the track as well - even if it is looking an increasingly long one.

The Briton knows the odds are now stacked against him winning a fourth title this season, given that even winning all the remaining races will not be enough if Rosberg finishes second every time.

But the same bad luck that saw him retire with an engine failure while leading in Malaysia this month can also strike elsewhere.

“We’ve got four races left to make the most of it and that’s exactly what I plan to do. It’s just about hitting every race weekend as hard as I can, going all out for every win and seeing what happens from there,” said Hamilton.

“I’ll be holding nothing back out there.

“I’ve got some great memories from Austin, with three wins from four races and,

of course, the title win last year. That was one of the highlights of my career, no doubt.

“It’s almost like the American fans have adopted me as their own, so I’ll try to channel all of that positive energy into this weekend.”

Hamilton could do with some of that after a negative Japanese Grand Prix in which he seemed determined to take on all-comers.

SINGAPORE - Angelique Kerber is the world number one in women’s tennis yet it remains a title she has yet to grow accustomed to after her meteoric rise to the summit.

Still a relatively new experience, the 28-yearold German reached the peak of the women’s game last month after landing her second grand slam title of the year at the U.S. Open, capping a stunning season for the left-hander from Bremen.

Kerber floated around the lower echelons of the top 10 for the last four years and did not even make the second week of a grand slam in 2015, but it all clicked in January.

A run to the final in Brisbane preceded a surprise upset win over Serena Williams to land the Australian Open title as the baseliner renowned for her strong defensive game finally realised her talent.

“All the experience from the last few years

came together this year. The belief in myself, I’ve grown up a little bit more this year,” she told Reuters of her new-found maturity.

“The victory in Australia, of course it’s great, I continued it the last few months and I’m here now as the best player of the year... and the world actually,” she added, chuckling as she corrected herself.

Kerber is guaranteed the year-end number one ranking after Williams pulled out of the $7 million season-ending WTA Finals in Singapore, which starts on Sunday, with a shoulder injury.

Kerber said she would “miss” the 22-times grand slam singles champion but did not offer a similar sentiment for Russia’s Maria Sharapova, who is scheduled to return to the circuit in April after her 15-month doping ban expires.

MEXICALI - Camped in migrant centers, broken-down rooms of a dingy, semi-derelict hotel and on church floors, thousands of Haitians desperate to enter the United States are in limbo and exposed to crime in dangerous border neighborhoods of Mexico.

The hard-bitten fringes of Tijuana and Mexicali are currently believed to house some 5,000 Haitians, and about 300 more are arriving daily after an arduous journey from Brazil, Mexican official numbers show.

The Haitians are not yet trying to slip illegally through the desert brush into the United States.

Instead, they will mostly make asylum pleas to U.S. border officials.

But U.S. migration facilities are overwhelmed. Almost three times more Haitians arrive every day than are granted interviews, the Mexican government says, creating a bottleneck and a fast swelling border population.

Thousands more are still making their way north in a movement of people bound to exacerbate the

backlog in the final weeks of a U.S. presidential campaign that has focused heavily on immigration and the Mexican border.

Mexico’s established migrant shelters are unable to cope with the rapidly rising numbers, so five Protestant churches have opened their doors to the new arrivals in recent days, and in Mexicali’s red-light zone a flop house for deportees and drug addicts has been converted by a migrant activist into cheap and dirty digs for the Haitians. It has no glass in its windows.

In the streets outside, locals smoke meth and a glue mixture called “cement” to get high. In Tijuana, small tent cities housing Haitians have sprung up on patches of wasteland.

Three Haitians told Reuters they had been mugged by local criminals. Rights activists say the newcomers are vulnerable to extortion and kidnapping by gangs who charge thousands of dollars to smuggle people into the United States. LONDON - Prime Minister Theresa May will come under pressure from other European Union leaders on Thursday to say what kind of deal she wants for Britain when it leaves the bloc.

JAKARTA — An Indonesian court on Thursday sentenced an Islamic militant to 10 years in prison for his involvement in a suicide bombing and gun attack in the capital Jakarta earlier this year.

May, attending her first EU summit since becoming prime minister in July, has so far given only glimpses of her vision for Britain’s future relationship with the EU. Below is a summary of the most important issues in the negotiations which are due to start by March next year.

MIGRATION About half the immigrants coming to Britain are from the EU. May wants to cut total net migration to below 100,000 a year from more than 300,000 now, something that would require tough controls. Most economists say migration has helped Britain’s economy although wages for lower-paid workers have taken a small hit.

May has ruled out the introduction of a points-based system modelled on the one used by Australia to select migrants, preferring a system that allows in the workers most needed by British employers. Since then, government ministers have said they want to ensure highly skilled workers can continue to move to Britain.

But EU leaders are unlikely to turn a blind eye to any restrictions on free movement of workers from the bloc. They fear that any concession to Britain would lead other states to demand similar deals, ultimately unraveling the Union.

Banks could lose their ability to offer services across the bloc from London, a system known as passporting. If they shift some of their operations to other EU states, it could hurt British tax revenues at a time when the country’s public finances are still likely to be in the red.

One battle could be over the ability of London to continue serving as the main centre for the clearing of derivatives denominated in euros, something it has fought in the EU courts to protect but may be unable to defend once outside the bloc.

BUDGET The pro-Brexit campaign before June’s referendum argued that once outside the EU, Britain would no longer have to make contributions to the bloc’s budget, which the UK Statistics Authority estimated at about 7 billion pounds a year.

But Britain might still have to pay into the EU budget in order to maintain access for its financial services industry or other key sectors. Norway and Switzerland both pay into the EU budget to have preferential access to the EU market.

CUSTOMS UNION VS TRADE DEALS Britain could seek to remain part of the EU’s customs union once it is no longer a formal member of the bloc. The customs union includes non-EU Turkey, Andorra and San Marino who trade freely with the bloc and share its common external tariffs. But if Britain opted to stay in the customs union, it could complicate attempts to strike free trade deals with other countries around the world, a central argument of the Brexit campaign.

British finance minister Philip Hammond said on Wednesday he was sensitive to the potential problems for British exporters, especially those involved in cross-border supply chains, should the country end up outside the customs union.

MECHANICS OF NEGOTIATION May has said she will launch the formal, two-year process of negotiating Britain’s exit from the EU before the end of March 2017 and London wants to use the interim period to sound out European counterparts and decide its priorities for the talks.

by Britain to talk informally about the out-

lines of a final deal, something that would help London settle on its Brexit strategy.

After May triggers the exit process, the other 27 EU leaders will meet within a month or two to draft instructions for the European Commission for the negotiations. Those talks will be led on the EU side by Michel Barnier of France, who had tense relationship with London when he was the Commission’s financial regulation chief from 2010 to 2014.

Diplomats in Brussels say two years will probably be enough to deal with the basic divorce, including dividing up the EU budget, EU assets and tricky stuff like the substantial future liabilities for paying the pensions of British EU staff.

But a new relationship, including trade ties, will probably take many more years, requiring some kind of transition agreement so that Britain is not left in limbo.

Britain has an incentive to wrap up the deal within the two-year time-frame to appease voters and influential Eurosceptic lawmakers before a national election due in May 2020. The EU has a strong incentive to wrap up the final exit before the next European Parliament elections in 2019, normally in May.(rtr)

SEMARANG - An original Indonesian herbal medicine, Jamu, will be marketed abroad in the Middle Eastern and ASEAN regions, the chairman of the Jamu Association of Central Java, Nyoto Wardoyo, said here on Wednesday.

Jamu is made from natural materials, such as roots, bark, flowers, seeds, leaves and fruits.

“Indonesias ambassadors in various countries have started to introduce Jamu to other countries, such as Arab nations and Hongkong,” he

informed.

According to him, Jamu is in demand in many countries because they have realized that its health benefits.

“Jamu is well known for its nutritional value. Demand for the product is rising and the exports have increased,” he reiterated.

He also appreciated the fact that the government is encouraging the herbal medicine industry to progress. “Entrepreneurs expect expeditious grant of a license.

Once we complete all the require-

ments, we want the government to immediately issue a permit,” he stressed.

He hoped for better synergy between farmers, entrepreneurs and university researchers to develop Jamu products. He also hoped that Jamu products could be a part of the BPJS health program.

“When people suffer mild colds, coughs or flu, the doctors can treat them with Jamu,” he underlined.

Thanks to these efforts, the usage of Jamu is expected to rise at home as well as abroad.(ant)

Dodi Suridi, 23, was captured a day after the Jan. 14 attack that killed eight people including four militants, who police said claimed allegiance to the Islamic State group.

Judge Achmad Fauzi, who presided over the trial at the West Jakarta District Court, said Suridi was guilty of violating Indonesia’s anti-terror law by supplying materials used to prepare bombs that were used in the attack.

About 40 militants have been arrested in connection with the attack that began with a suicide bombing inside a Starbucks cafe.

In a separate trial at the same court, Ali Hamka, 48, was sentenced Thursday to four years in prison for his ultimately unsuccessful attempts to procure guns and ammunition for the attack. Suridi knew a suicide bombing would take place but did not know when and where, according to Fauzi. He also participated in meetings aimed at recruiting suicide bombers.

Suridi showed no remorse in the court room. He said he would not appeal and called his sentence the “risk of being a terrorist.” Prosecutors had demanded a 10-year sentence.

IS’s deadly attacks in the Middle East and Europe and the group’s online propaganda have helped to recruit a tiny minority of Indonesians to their cause. Authorities say several hundred Indonesians also have traveled to Syria to fight with IS. But experts say their capacity to mount successful attacks within Indonesia is still limited.

Recent plots have failed completely, including a would-be bombing of a church in Medan on Sumatra and an attack on a police complex in Solo on Java that killed only the suicide bomber.

On Thursday, a man with an IS symbol was shot to death after attacking police on the outskirts of Jakarta with a machete and pipe bombs. Three police officers were injured in the attack.(ap)

An island on the northernmost Indonesian territory, Miangas is

“Miangas is very close to our neighbour, the Philippines. We will show them that we care for and build Indonesias verandah well and are proud of it,” Jokowi said.

Lembongan customary village will hold labuh gentuh ritual

SEMARAPURA - Lembongan customary village, Nusa Penida, finally made the decision after the collapse of the yellow bridge, Sunday afternoon (Oct. 16). After holding a meeting with customary apparatuses, village officials, community leaders and families of the dead victims at wantilan hall of Lembongan customary village, residents decided to hold labuh gentuh and pemarisudha bumi ritual.

The ritual is scheduled to be held at two locations namely at the collapsed yellow bridge and catus pata (central intersection) of Lembongan customary village. However, the pemarisudha bumi ritual is not held as soon as possible. This ritual will be held together with labuh gentuh in sasih kedasa or tenth month in Balinese calendar (April) 2017.

According to chief of Lembongan customary village, Made Sukadana, before the ritual takes place, Lembongan customary villagers will first present guru piduka (apologetic) and mapu agem (readiness) ritual. The ritual will be held at trinity temples of the local village on full moon of sasih kalima falling in November. “This ritual has been decided by villagers after asking for directions to priests of trinity temples of Lembongan,” said Sukadana, Wednesday (Oct. 19).

According to Sukadana, the yellow bridge tragedy claiming eight fatalities is a disaster. Thus, it needs to be held the labuh gentuh and pemarisudha bumi ritual. Both have significance as a purificatory rite for nature and the sea in order to restore back. Moreover, all this time Lembongan village has never organized such a ceremony since 75 years ago.

Buleleng Kite-Cutting Festival held on October 27-28

SINGARAJA - A number of creativities owned by young generation of Buleleng can improve its existence. One of them is the implementation of the Buleleng Kite-Cutting (Mekorot) Festival 2016. The term is synonymous with kite contest. The winner is the participants considered to have cut the most enemy’s kite ropes.

“Concept of this Buleleng kitecutting festival is intended for cultural preservation, in this case playing kite. Vivacity of the competition and sportsmanship in playing kite is combined with togetherness. Delayed twice by judges, legal counsel disappointed

DENPASAR - After being picked up at Kerobokan Prison to undergo the trial with the agenda of hearing the verdict or sentence, the pedophile defendant Robert Andrew Fiddes Ellis failed to undergo the trial of verdict. On Tuesday (Oct. 18), before the trial the judges led by Wayan Sukanila claimed to have not completed the verdict, he postponed it until next week.

“Naturally, I am very disappointed. It is for the second time for the judge to delay the trial,” said legal counsel of Robert, Yanuar Nahak, shortly after the defendant was taken to the detention room of the Denpasar District Court. In the meantime, defendant Robert also asked the reason why the sentence was postponed twice.

His legal counsel tried to explain that the judge was not ready on the verdict.

Previously, Robert was sentenced by the prosecutor with 16 years imprisonment. In addition, the defendant is also required to pay a fine of IDR 2 billion with the subsidiary of eight months in prison. In the defense, the defendant’s legal counsel team asked so that the defendant could be released from the prosecution.

The culprits are grabber gang remaining teenagers with the initials NM, 16, and KB, 12, from Karangasem.

From page 1 At a the number of vacant land adjoining to the landfill border, hundreds of cattle belonging to local residents gather in groups of about 10- 20 heads. Some are soaking in black water, while some other are sheltering under trees that only some can grow up.

Other groups continue to enjoy the summer heat of the sun while chewing food.

Gede Mekar, a middle-aged man helping his son-in-law keep cattle and pigs at the Suwung landfill, revealed that it is much easier to raise cattle at the landfill than at his home village in Karangasem.

He said that his son-in-law, a local resident, has about 40 cows. Just by releasing, the cows are able to look for fodder by themselves.

His son-in-law does not need to make permanent cowshed as breeders at villages. Besides, he does not need to mow grass for fodder, either. Every morning, the cows go

up to the landfill to look for fodder. Around 07:00 until 08:00, the cattle have come back down. “In the afternoon, they go back up to look for fodder,” said Gede Mekar when met in the pigpen belonging to his son-in-law.

Then, how does he recognize his cattle since there are hundreds of cattle let roam around at the landfill? “Each owner has given a special sign on the body of their cows. One of them is marked with neck strap or with color on cow’s ear. Obviously they never get difficulty to recognize theirs,” he said.

Should there be any mistaken of loading (selling) the cow, the breeders in the neighborhood will not make it a problem. They just need to admit their fault and eventually replace with their own cow. The case is closed. “Loading cow wrongly has once occurred, but it was then replaced and it is considered as an accident. But when happening repeatedly, it is a different case,” he explained.

He said that each breeder has different number of cows grazed at

the landfill. It can be dozens, tens or hundreds of heads. He mentioned that one of the breeders has 300 cows at the landfill. Their cows often gather in groups, so that it is not difficult to recognize their cows. “So, I consider it easy to keep cows at this landfill. It is much different from farmers at villages that should look for grass and make a cowshed, so that raising two heads only is a hassle,” he said.

Previously, hamlet chief of Pesanggaran governing the area of Suwung landfill, Wayan Widiada, said the activities of people raising cattle and pigs around the landfill is actually the result of the presence of the landfill. Approximately 60 families living around the landfill have no other choice of livelihood.

“Raising cattle and pigs is a choice because it is not possible for them to pursue other activities.

We were lucky because there are still people that can have activities around the landfill,” he said when receiving the PDI-P Faction of the Denpasar House of Representatives, some time ago. (ara)

‘Heaven Hill’ becomes the icon of Nampo Hill agrotourism

This is the hill top making netizens curious. Its natural beauty causes many travelers, especially nature lovers, to chase although it is located far above the Nampo Hill, Jungutan village, Bebandem, Karangasem. Recently, nature tourism becomes a trend in the society amid the saturation due to those of very same tourism activities.

“The busiest visit occurs on weekend reaching about hundreds of people. Visitors say they want to find a new place with convenient atmosphere,” said Ketut Latra, the owner of Bukit Nampo agrotourism, when met at the location, Tuesday (Oct. 18).

Latra is no longer strange figure in the field of agriculture and plantation. He has got a myriad of local and national awards due to his diligence in agriculture and plantation. He told that initially the hill area of about two hectares was the same as the other hill tops.

At the beginning, he built small shacks as resting place. But, seeing the potential of the beautiful nature, the land was gradually arranged. Local agriculture agency also supports his effort.

With this icon, he confessed to be making the concept of Bukit Nampo agrotourism equipped with training base camp for agriculture and forestry. So far, he sees there is no place for apprenticeship training, hatchery, processing up to post-harvest management of agribusiness and farmer group. Currently, the Bukit Nampo agrotourism is only

managed by one farmer group, namely the Tumpang Lestari farmer group. The farmer group manages the Bukit Nampo agrotourism spreading across the area of 75 hectares with snakefruit as the main product.

“Right now, the Bukit Nampo agrotourism has been included in the agropolitan program of the Ministry of Public Works and Housing Affairs. Contribution of this program is the provision of assistance in the form of road access in three phases,” he said.

Latra hoped the icon of ‘Heaven Hill’ can become a cheap alternative tourism with knowledge about agriculture and plantations.

Right now, visitors to this object just need to pay voluntary donation. Since the launch on April 19 with the regent of Karangasem, the two hectares of land at this object is being setup. This year, it is focused on structuring the land contour. Next year it will be resumed with the arrangement of plantation and the park.

Ultimately, he will work on the supporting infrastructure to the tourist attraction becoming the mainstay of Karangasem. (gik)

NEW YORK - Oscar-winner Leonardo DiCaprio’s charitable foundation would return gifts or donations made to him or his ventures if they were found to have come from Malaysian wealth fund 1MDB, which is being investigated on money laundering allegations, his representatives said on Tuesday.

In his first comment on the multinational probe into the fund, DiCaprio said he was cooperating with U.S. authorities to determine if money had come from questionable sources, according to the statement.

In July a Hollywood production company was accused in a U.S. civil lawsuit of using $100 million that prosecutors said had been diverted from the 1MDB fund to finance DiCaprio’s 2013 film “The Wolf of Wall Street,” in which he starred.

Indonesian authorities are increasingly worried about a resurgence in radicalism in Southeast Asia’s largest economy, driven in part by a new generation of militants inspired by Islamic State.

“Two of (the police) were stabbed in the arm and chest. Then the attacker walked around showing off his weapon, walking to the police post and shouting ‘Allahu akbar’ (God is greatest),” Mohammad Isa Ansori, deputy police chief of Tangerang district, told Reuters.

The attacker, who was born in 1994 and unemployed, was believed to be a member of Indonesian militant group Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), which supports Islamic State. The umbrella organisation, formed last year through an alliance of splinter groups backing Islamic State, is led by jailed Islamist cleric Aman Abdurrahman, who is serving a nine-year prison sentence for aiding

a militant training camp.

Thursday’s assault comes after a series of Islamic State-linked attacks beginning in January when four militants mounted a gun and bomb attack in Jakarta. When entering the area adjacent to road section to Serangan Island, the dust blanketing

the road to the landfill is quite thick. When rubbish truck speeds, the floating dust covers up the road. Stuffy smell mixed waste stench become a daily things at the landfill.
