LAS VEGAS - Ariana Grande has cancelled a Las Vegas concert because of “health issues” - but has promised to “make it up” to fans in 2019. The 25-year-old US singer was set to perform at The Cosmopolitan hotel on Saturday, just days before New Year’s Eve. “Vegas, I’m currently working through some health issues and am beyond sorry I wont be able to see you this weekend,” Grande told her fans on Instagram. “I love u and so look forward to seeing u and making it up to u next year.” Entertainment website TMZ, citing sources close to the singer, reported that Grande was suffering from bron-
chitis. A representative for Grande was not immediately available for comment. Grande ended 2018 with her song Thank U, Next at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart for the sixth week. Her year also saw the death of exboyfriend and rapper Mac Miller in September and her break-up with fiance Pete Davidson in October. CALIFORNIA - Angelina Jolie has declined to rule out a move into politics, saying: “I’ll go where I’m needed.” The US actress and campaigner, who filed for divorce from fellow Hollywood star Brad Pitt in 2016, joked about skeletons in her closet as she said she did not know whether she would fit such a role. Jolie, 43, could follow the likes of Ronald Reagan and Donald Trump - former presenter of The Apprentice - if she did choose to move from the showbiz arena into politics. Others to have made the switch
include Arnold Schwarzenegger and former Sex and the City actress Cynthia Nixon. Jolie was pressed on the idea when she was interviewed on the BBC, as she guest edited Radio 4’s Today programme on Friday. She said: “If you asked me 20 years ago I would’ve laughed. I really don’t know. I always say I’ll go where I’m needed. “I don’t know if I’m fit for politics… but then I’ve also joked that I don’t know if I have a skeleton left in my closet. “So I’m pretty open and out
there. I can take a lot on the chin so that’s good. But I honestly will do whatever I think can really make change.” The actress, a mother-of-six, is currently a special envoy for UN refugee agency the UNHCR where she said she was able “to do a lot of work directly with the people in need”. She added: “I’m also able to work with governments… so I sit in a very interesting place of being able to get a lot done, without a title and without it being about myself or my policies. “So for now I’ll sit quiet.” (net)

Simple steps for dealing with garbage in Bali
Bali’s provincial government has announced that single use plastic such as plastic bags will be banned as of January 1rst, 2018. This is certainly a huge step in reducing the amount of plastic being consumed on the island and contributes to raising awareness about the fact that this material becomes highly toxic when burned, buried or let to soak in water. However, given how ubiquitous plastic is in our lives today, an equally if not more important matter is how we deal with the plastic garbage that we do produce as it is highly unlikely that we will stop using plastic altogether anytime soon. There are countless initiatives throughout the island aimed at cleaning up the garbage that has been thrown away haphazardly - most notably into rivers and washed onto beaches. Many argue that people are simply not aware of how toxic plastic is and that it does not biodegrade, because up until about 40 years ago all post-consumer waste on the island was organic. To what extent people lack education on the matter and to what extent there is simply a lack of facilities provided to the public for disposing of their garbage efficiently is perhaps up for debate. Currently junk banks will buy certain types of plastic and metals, which they then sell to recycling plants off the island. The rest of the plastic bought to them is simply thrown into landfills or burned on the spot releasing extremely
toxic fumes. Plastic can in fact be recycled or up-cycled in a number of ways, but without an organized system that is applied island-wide there is little hope that small scale initiatives will be able to make a dent in this critical situation. However, with small- scale well-managed local sorting sites set up throughout the island, small scale initiatives of different kinds for transforming this valuable material into energy or products can most certainly make a massive difference. Bali has a massive amount of garbage that is not being managed anywhere close to optimally. While it appears that garbage, tourism and religious ceremonies in Bali are cur-
rently swirling in a downward spiral of unchecked pollution, harmful input and lack of responsibility, these same three features of the enchanted island could very well work together in an upward spiral of contribution, mobilization and environmental health. By accepting plastic as a part of the natural world and giving it due attention and the same religious devotion that pays homage to the natural world in myriad and systematized ways in Bali, plastic waste and garbage more broadly could be included in this system instead of simply being ignored because it does not fit it to existing ways of functioning and allowed to become a real demon.
