Ed Sheeran reveals he played himself in Danny Boyle’s new film

LONDON - Ed Sheeran has revealed he spent a “very intense two months” playing himself in Danny Boyle’s latest movie - and performing concerts at the same time.

The as-yet-untitled film, written

by Love Actually’s Richard Curtis, is a “very, very original story”, Sheeran said.

In it, former Eastenders actor Himesh Patel plays a singersongwriter who wakes up one day to find out he is the only person in the world who remembers The Beatles.

Sheeran discovers him and takes him on tour.

“Then he gets much, much bigger than me through doing stuff,” Sheeran said. “Yeah, it’s very clever.”

Discussing his part, Sheeran said he “got to actually kind of learn how to act”.

In contrast, his “Game of Thrones thing” simply involved “popping in for a day and making a cameo”.

This time, however, he was spending “full days on set, like full

12-hour days”.

Sheeran explained: “They shot it around loads of my gigs. So it was a very intense two months, because I would have four days of gigging and then three days of shooting a film.

“I was playing myself, so I don’t think I was that bad. There wasn’t much to (mess) up.”

The 27-year-old has also revealed he would like to make a musical for the big screen, in which “songs dictate the film in a way”.

“I can’t see myself playing an Avenger, you know? I don’t really want to be actor,” he confided.

The star features in a new documentary made by Apple Music called Songwriter, which looks at the making of his last album, Divide.

While it features a scene with his fiancee, Cherry Seaborn, it does not delve into his personal life.

Ed commented: “I give so much of myself in my songs, and there are just certain choices that I can make, that I can keep certain things private, basically. (afp)

LOS ANGELES - A man who hacked into more than 200 iCloud accounts of Hollywood stars, including Jennifer Lawrence, has been jailed for eight months.

George Garofano was sentenced in Bridgeport, Connecticut, where he was told he must also serve three years of supervised released and perform 60 hours of community service.

Garofano was one of four men arrested in the 2014 hacking scandal that led to private photos of Lawrence, Kirsten Dunst, Kate Upton and others being made public.

Authorities say the hackers used

a phishing scheme that sent emails appearing to be from Apple security accounts that asked for usernames and passwords.

Garofano pleaded guilty in April and asked for leniency, saying he faces a lifetime loss of rights because of the felony conviction.

Speaking at the time of the leak, Lawrence told Vanity Fair magazine she believed she had been the

victim of a “sex crime”.

“Just because I’m a public figure, just because I’m an actress, does not mean that I asked for this,” the Hunger Games star said.

“It does not mean that it comes with the territory. It’s my body, and it should be my choice, and the fact that it is not my choice is absolutely disgusting. I can’t believe that we even live in that kind of world.” (net)

WWII bomb defused in Germany after 18,500 evacuated

A German bomb disposal team on Sunday successfully defused an unexploded World War II bomb that had forced the evacuation of 18,500 people in the city of Ludwigshafen. The 500kilogramme (1,100-pound) aerial bomb, thought to have been dropped by American forces, was discovered during construction work earlier in the week.

“Good news: the bomb has been defused! Citizens may return to their homes,” the city of Ludwigshafen said on its official Twitter feed.

It also posted a picture of the freshly unearthed, corroded bomb, strapped to a pallet before being removed from the area.

Authorities in the western city had ordered all those living within a 1,000-metre (0.6-mile) radius of the bomb site to leave their homes from 08:00 am (0600 GMT) as a precaution ahead of the defusing operation.

It took the bomb squad just over an hour to complete the deli-

cate task, and the all-clear was given shortly after 2:00 pm.

More than 70 years after the end of World War II, Germany remains littered with unexploded ordnance, a legacy of the intense Allied bombing campaign against Nazi Germany.

In the biggest post-war evacu-

ation to date, some 60,000 Frankfurt residents were evacuated last year so that an unexploded 1.8-tonne British bomb dubbed the “blockbuster” could be defused.

In April, thousands had to clear an area around Berlin’s central railway station after another British bomb was discovered on a building site.

Unexploded munitions have also complicated the work of firefighters this summer, with

forest fires sparked by a spell of hot, dry weather setting off long-buried ordnance, causing small explosions on several occasions. Ensuring high quality elections

The press must maintain their independence

DENPASAR - The Ministry of Communication and Informatics in collaboration with the Media and Election Caucus held an Editor’s Forum entitled: “Dignified Media for Quality Elections” at the Inna Grand Bali Beach, Sanur, Denpasar, on Wednesday (Aug. 29).

The event attended by editors in chief and journalists from a number of mass media in Bali presented four speakers; Chairman of the Press Council for the tenure of 2010-2016, Bagir Manan, Deputy Chairman of the Press Council for the tenure of 20102013, Bambang Harymurti, Member of the Press Council for the tenure of 2010-2013, Agus Sudibyo, and expert staff to the Directorate General of Information and Public Communication, Ahmed Kurnia.

Agus Sudibyo said that political upheaval ahead of the 2019 legislative election and presidential election has already begun to emerge, especially on social media. The mass media should not complicate the situation, but instead play a role in cooling things down when they start to heat up, he said. They also have a major role in reminding the public to maintain national unity. This is important in creating a more qualified and dignified political space that can become a reference for the public, explained Sudibiyo.

“Research indicates the interesting fact that 71 percent of people still believe in journalistic mass media as a good source of information. How to maintain this trust will become the next issue because 71 percent of Indonesia’s population also access to social media as a source of their information”, he said.

Sudibyo, public confidence in social media is slightly higher at 59 percent than confidence in the mass media which is recorded at only 51 percent. Therefore, it is important to maintain public trust by making sure that our mass media provides something better than social media – namely more reliable and higher quality information.

“The public will continue to access the mass media if they are given something better and that they don’t get it from social media.

The only way to survive is by providing dignified journalism.

Media must maintain their independence and professionalism”, he explained.

Bagir Manan agreed that the press must be able to maintain its independence. Moreover, it is impossible to quell social media as such sources of information represent a form of freedom of speech and are part of the natural development of science and technology. The press must return to its function of enlightening the public and being the public’s eyes and ears. Thus, people coming to the ballot box during the elections are doing so out of their awareness about the importance of participating in the electoral process and not because they have been mobilized by interested parties.

“The press is born and rooted in independence, so that the press needs to have the courage to claim it’s due place in the public sphere. As a social institution, the press can only survive if it maintains public confidence. Therefore, mass media needs to remain impartial and on the side of public interest”, said Manan.

This does not however mean that the press cannot take sides with power, added Manan, explaining that this is fine as long as power is being exercised for public interest.

Head of the Center for Research & Development of Informatics Applications and Public Information and Communication at the Ministry of Communication and Information, Wiryanta, said that he hopes the press can carry out a positive and responsible role in ensuring good quality elections and added that there is is also a need for the public to be discerning about the information they access. Four governors have different backgrounds

DENPASAR - The four leaders that have led Bali as governor came from different backgrounds: educator, administrator and executor and the new elected governor of Bali is a politician with experience in the central government.

Businessman I Gede Wirata, who has been involved in the tourism sector since 1977 believes that the new elected Governor of Bali is arriving to this post accompanied by staff who are well established in terms of both knowledge and experience. “They have already been educated by the previous governor. I am sure that every local government head is already good at their job”, he said on Wednesday (Aug. 29).

Since 1977, when he was still a college student, Wirata has been involved in the private sector and over the years he has witnessed the leadership of four Balinese governors who all came form the Island of the Gods.

I.B. Mantra was Governor of Bali from 1978 to 1988, followed by I.B. Oka, from 1988 to 1998 and then I Dewa Beratha led from 1998 to 2010. I.B. Mantra was very concerned with making philosophy-based plans. “He had a lot of expertise and was a great person. I know this to be true from his ten years of leading Bali”, said Wirata.

Mantra’s leadership was followed by that of I.B. Oka who created a lot of infrastructure including implanting I.B. Mantra’s idea of creating a bypass known today as Jalan I. B. Mantra, as well as the campus of Udayana University opening the region of South Kuta. Under I.B Oka; leadership the Nikko Hotel was established as well as Pecatu Graha and the expansion of the airport.

“The current elected governor of Bali is from the central government. He may know a lot administratively but as for Bali itself, he might only know the outter layers. With the transition period only lasting until September 17th – it is not a long time to learn a lot”, he said. period,” he said.

There is not enough time to make external improvements but internal improvements can still be made, Said Wirata.

“There is not enough time to go all over Bali – let alone make policies”, he said.

DENPASAR — Bank loans have not evenly distributed in Bali.

Such uneven distribution happens because the absorbability of the community remains low. In Bali, the largest loan absorption is in Denpasar City reaching 54.5 percent, Badung district (14.4 percent) and Buleleng (8.39 percent).

Head of the Financial Service Authority (OJK) for Bali and Nusa Tenggara Region, Hizbullah, said the loan distribution in Bali amounted to IDR 83.9 trillion. “The largest loan distribution is in Denpasar City because Denpasar has the most business activities,” he said.

After Denpasar is Badung district accounting for 14.4 percent because it poses the center of the tourism industry and Buleleng reaches 8.39 percent. Meanwhile, the largest loan growth in Bali happens in three districts, namely Buleleng reaching 16.55 percent a year, Klungkung district (10.68 percent) and Bangli district (7.69 percent).

Meanwhile, the business sector receiving the most loan is consumption (non-business field), amounting to 38.06 percent. Usually consumer loans are for mortgages. The second sector is wholesale and retail trade reaching 31.62 percent as well as accommodation, food and beverage (8.9 percent).

So, the loan distribution to productive sector is low.

tribution happens because Bali’s economy has not fully recovered yet following the eruption of Mount Agung. In addition, the earthquake that occurred in Lombok also affected the economy of Bali.

Another impact causing the low loan absorbability is the impact of global economy, namely trade competition between the United States and China.

Uneven loan distribution in Bali is also accompanied by the opening of bank branch offices. “If a bank opens a branch in a particular region, it must be based on a feasibility study submitted to the OJK what services will be served,” he said. If there is no sector or business field in the region to be financed, then no bank will open a branch in the region.

TOURISM sector of Bali continues to grow. At least, this is indicated by the number of tourist visits in the past five years whose trends are increasing every year. In 2016, the growth even reached 23.14 percent compared to the previous year. Uniqueness of culture and natural beauty make Bali favored. So, it is not surprising that many parties, especially tourism players, are optimistic about Bali that will remain the leading tourist destination, especially for foreign tourists. In addition, many potential is still untapped.

The number of tourist growth in 2016 should be observed by tourism stakeholders, especially the government. Suppose the growth far exceeds that number, such as touching dozens of millions of people, is Bali ready to anticipate it? In terms of tourist accommodation, it can be said that Bali is still ready because every year many hotels, villas and restaurants are established.

Currently, the number of tourist accommodation is too much so that they result in unfair competition. However, if related to infrastructure, especially roads, Bali is not yet capable of doing it. Let alone accommodate tens of millions of tourists, currently many main road sections and those leading to tourist destinations are always imbued with crowdedness and traffic congestion.

It means the homework of Bali’s infrastructure remains a myriad. The government may not ignore it because one of the things that must be available for tourism development is infrastructure, especially roads. Promotion program increases the number of tourist visits without being accompanied with gradual improvements in infrastructure in terms of quantity and quality. Surely, this will be very dangerous for Bali.

Development of Agro Techno Park in Petang to be assessed

Separatist leaders have threatened major protests if the Supreme Court annuls a constitutional provision that bars Indians from outside Kashmir from buying land or seeking government jobs in the territory.

On Wednesday, rebels killed four police officers while Indian troops killed two militants.

Separatist groups say the legal challenge against the special privileges, which date back to 1954, is a bid by India’s Hindu nationalist government to alter Kashmir’s religious make-up.

“I caution the freedom loving people of the state to remain vigilant against these ploys to change the Muslim-majority character of the state,” top separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani said in a statement released late Wednesday calling for the strike.

KUALA LUMPUR - A famed Malaysian Hindu temple complex has had its steps painted in a dazzling array of colours, sparking excitement from some visitors but angering officials who oversee heritage sites.

The Batu Caves complex, a series of caverns set in a limestone hill on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, is popular with devotees from Malaysia’s ethnic Indian minority and tourists, with a regular stream of people clambering up the 272 steps to reach the temples.

The steps have been painted in a kaleidoscope of bright colours ahead of a Hindu ritual that is conducted in temples every 12 years, which will take place Friday.

But the temple management

committee has found itself in hot water with the government heritage department, after allegedly failing to seek permission to paint the steps.

The committee will receive a warning letter from the department, while Deputy Culture Minister Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik said he was “very disappointed” and the work had “disturbed the harmony, integrity and originality of Batu Caves”, the Star newspaper reported.

He played down the possibility of the complex losing its heritage status, but urged others running historic sites to get consent before carrying out major work or renovations.

But the paint job on the steps, which were previously the same colour as the limestone hillside,

impressed tourists visiting the complex.

Ratna Yunita from Indonesia described it as “out of the ordinary”.

“So many colours, so many people in such a beautiful place, it feels like you’re in India, not in Malaysia,” she told AFP. Batu Caves is an important religious site for Tamil Hindus.

During the annual Thaipusam festival, massive crowds of devotees descend on the complex, with many piercing their bodies with hooks and skewers to showcase devotion to the deity Lord Murugan.

Most of Malaysia’s roughly 32 million people are Muslim, but the country also has around two million ethnic Indians and nearly seven million ethnic Chinese. (afp)

BUSINESS India’s RBI says almost all banned notes returned Almost all Indian currency notes scrapped two years ago have been returned to the banking system, the country’s central bank says, raising questions about the point of the controversial attempt to tackle illegal money.

India’s economy suffered a sharp downturn after Prime Minister Narendra Modi stunned the country in November 2016 by withdrawing 86 percent of banknotes from circulation in a move known as “demonetisation”.

He said the decision to scrap all 1,000rupee ($14) and 500-rupee notes was necessary to clean up India’s graft-ridden economy, suggesting that stashes of so-called black money would be unearthed.

The government said it would leave people hiding large sums of illegal cash with a difficult decision: either declare the money and face possible criminal action or do nothing, rendering it worthless.

However, late Wednesday the Reserve Bank of India announced in its annual report that 15.3 trillion rupees ($216.4 billion) worth -- or 99.3 percent -- of the devalued bills had been returned.

The RBI, which added that it had completed its assessment of demonetisation, gave no explanation for what that meant for the success of the policy.

But analysts and opposition politicians said it proved Indians were not hoarding unaccounted for or counterfeit notes at home.

They argue instead that illegal money is hidden through so-called “benami” transactions, where assets such as properties are registered in false or third-party names, which the cash ban did nothing to combat.

“The report shows that demonetisation has failed in its primary objective,” Ashutosh Datar, a Mumbai-based economist, told AFP. Indians are heavily dependent on cash.

Around 90 percent of everyday transactions were being carried out in cash at the time of the ban.

Critics say demonetisation caused unnecessary suffering to millions of India’s poor who operate outside of the formal economy while the IMF said this month that it had caused “an acute monetary shock”.

India grew 7.5 percent in the quarter preceding Modi’s announcement but growth fell as low as 5.7 percent in mid-2017 as it reeled from demonetisation and other economic reforms, including the introduction of a nationwide goods and services tax.

While 5.7 is an impressive rate by the standard of Western economies, commentators say Asia’s third-largest economy -- with its population of 1.25 billion -- should be expanding at around eight percent.

India’s economy has since bounced back and grew 7.7 percent for the quarter from January to March this year, the highest rate since before the demonetisation.(afp)

US economy grew at a brisk 4.2 pct. annual rate last quarter

WASHINGTON - The U.S. economy grew at a strong 4.2 percent annual rate in the April-June quarter, the best showing in nearly four years, as growth stayed on track to produce its strongest full-year gain in more than a decade.

Strength in business investment offset slightly slower consumer spending.

The Commerce Department on Wednesday revised up its growth estimate for last quarter from an initial estimate of a 4.1 percent annual rate. The second quarter marked a sharp improvement from a 2.2 percent gain in the January-March period, though some of the strength last quarter came from temporary factors, including a surge in U.S exports before tariffs were to take effect.

Economists expect growth to slow to a still solid 3 percent annual rate the rest of the year, resulting in full-year growth of 3 percent for 2018. It would be the best performance since 2005, two years before the Great Recession began.

The 4.2 percent annual growth that the government estimated for last quarter is the strongest such figure since a 4.3 percent annual gain in the third quarter of 2014. The expectation of 3 percent growth for 2018 as a whole would be up from gains of 1.6 percent in 2016 and 2.2 percent last year.

Since the recovery began in mid-2009, growth has been sub-par, with annual gains averaging just 2.2 percent, making it the weakest recovery in the post-war period.

President Donald Trump often pointed to that fact during the 2016 presidential campaign to attack the economic record of the Obama administration. He has touted the pickup in growth, as measured by the gross domestic product, as evidence that his economic program of tax cuts, deregulation and tougher

enforcement of trade agreements is working.

Last month, Trump proclaimed that the GDP figure showed that the United States was now the “economy envy of the world.”

While forecasting solid growth of around 3 percent this year, economists contend that this performance is being pumped up for now by the $1.5 trillion tax cut Trump pushed through Congress last year, along with increased government spending. Many analysts say they think that those factors will begin to fade starting next year and that by 2020, growth may even slow enough to edge the economy close to a possible recession.

Gus Faucher, chief economist at PNC, said he foresees GDP growth this year of 3.4 percent, which he thinks will slow to 2.4 percent in 2019 and 1.6 percent in 2020 “as the fiscal stimulus from tax cuts and spending fades.”

Faucher said he thinks that continued interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve will also act to slow growth. Trump has recently criticized the Fed, saying he is “unhappy” with its rate hikes, arguing that they pose a threat to the faster growth he is trying to fuel with his economic policies.

Some economists said Wednesday’s upward revision to GDP would give the Fed, which has already raised rates twice this year, leeway to do so twice more before year’s end, as it has signaled it expects to do.

“The economy’s good fortune is giving Fed officials the green light to take away the

emergency stimulus left over from the recession and financial crisis a decade ago,” said Chris Rupkey, chief financial economist at MUFG Union Bank.

Trump administration officials reject outside forecasts that growth will inevitably slow after this year. They suggest that the Trump policies will unleash an economic boom that will deliver annual growth rates of 3 percent or better over the next decade.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, in a CNBC interview Tuesday, pointed to the solid GDP performance in the spring as evidence that the administration is fulfilling Trump’s campaign promises regarding the economy.

“We are delivering on what was the president’s economic agenda about creating growth,” Mnuchin said.

Wednesday’s GDP report showed that consumer spending, which accounts for about 70 percent of economic activity, expanded at a strong annual rate of 3.8 percent in the second quarter, down slightly from an initial estimate of 4 percent growth in consumer spending.

But that downward revision was outweighed by other factors including stronger business investment, which grew at a 6.2 percent rate, driven by spending on such items as computer software.

Other sources of strength were less growth in imports, which subtract from GDP, and faster growth in government spending at the federal and state and local levels. (ap)

Usaba Muhu-Muhu at Timbrah Customary Village

There is no day without a religious ceremony. It is the characteristic life on the Island of Bali or the Island of the Gods. One of them is the Usaba MuhuMuhu at Timbrah customary village, Pertima, Karangasem. People at this village have a philosophy of high significance to maintain the integrity and harmony of their residents. It is reflected in the Usaba Muhu–Muhu ritual. This ceremony was held on Saturday (Jan. 9). It is implemented in the form of caru desa or animal sacrifice aiming to neutralize bhuta kala into bhuta hita. Thus, residents continue to live in harmony as well as the universe.

Implementation of this tradition is starting from nyaga ritual. Three days before the Usaba Muhu-Muhu, residents carry out this ritual to neutralize bhuta kala in smaller scale, so as not to disturb other’s courtyard.

This ritual is also called metuun buah. At the time of Usaba Muhu-Muhu, balancing ritual is performed in a higher level by the customary village with the caru sacrificing a cow.

Undagi procession when slaughtering cow for the caru oblation always draws the attention of surrounding residents. The cow tied to a concrete pole is slaughtered by the undagi and this lasts tensely. It is thrashing about when slaughtered so that makes people tense.

However, this procession is more secure than a similar ritual at Asak village, where the cow is released and then bombarded with swords, machetes and other sharp weapons, when the Usaba Kaulu held at the village.

Nengah Sukada, the local community leader, conveyed that the tradition is held once a year, precisely every new moon of the seventh month in Balinese calendar or around January. Residents of the support-

ing villages and two sesabu hamlets come down to carry out the task of devotional works at their respective hamlet to prepare ritual means.

After the procession is over, people carry out prayers at the Dalem Tengah Temple.

Ritual at this temple is officiated over by great-grandfather and dahyang. Greatgrandparent officiates over the offerings in

the kemulan shrine on the pedestal, while the dahyang officiates over the kemulan offerings under the pedestal. Interestingly, after saying prayers together, local residents ranging from parents to children join a shared meal or megibung, enjoying the beef as the remainder of the ritual means. Residents sit together in place that have been provided by customary village, such as meeting pavilion,

long pavilion and gamelan troupe pavilion.

Some other sources at the local village mention that the tradition of Usaba MuhuMuhu is also considered as the implementation of the Shiva Purana, namely when Durgha goes up against the Mahisasura giant cow or buffalo. Today, it is celebrated as a form of human self-control in order to avoid animal nature. (kmb)

The ingredients used consist of rice waste, local spices, bay leaves and water. The spices are dominated with turmeric, then add a little galangal, ginger, aromatic ginger, garlic, onion, chili, coriander, pepper, candlenut, shrimp paste,

coconut oil and salt (to taste) and a bay leaf (to taste) as well.

Preparation: first of all, turmeric, galangal, ginger and aromatic ginger are finely chopped. Onion and garlic are sliced ??and then mixed with other ingredients, and then ground to make it smooth.

Similarly, candlenut, pepper and coriander can be crushed or blender to be smoothed, too. After that, put into the basin and then cook the rice waste and add coconut oil. Stir it well so the seasoning can mix thoroughly with the rice.

The next process is to put the mixed rice into the pan. Add water and salt to taste. Put spinach or sweet leaves and two pieces of bay leaves. Heat it for about 20 minutes or until cooked. Finally, take out the porridge and now it is ready to be served. In order to taste better, it can be added with fried onions and crispy crackers. (kmb)

Pacific leaders urged to demand end to Australia’s refugee camps

WELLINGTON - Amnesty International joined 80 other NGOs on Thursday in urging Pacific leaders demand the closure of an Australian-funded immigration detention camp on Nauru when they meet in the tiny island nation next week.

The 18-nation Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) will hold its annual summit in Nauru from September 3-6, with delegates meeting just a few kilometres from the camp dubbed “Australia’s Guantanamo”.

It houses asylum-seekers who have tried to reach Australia by boat and are processed in remote facilities on Nauru and Papua New Guinea under Canberra’s hardline immigration policies.

Australia says offshore processing is necessary to deter illegal boat arrivals and prevent deaths at sea on the treacherous journey.

Amnesty, along with the 80 other non-government organisations, released an open letter calling on PIF leaders to act and end “a stain on the region”.

“Pacific island leaders cannot ignore this issue any longer and need to ensure that it is at the very top of the forum’s agenda,” Amnesty’s Pacific researcher Roshika Deo said.

“This is a desperate situation that requires urgent action. Regional leaders must show that they will not

stand by while the Australian government’s abusive policies continue to risk more lives.”

The rights groups said asylum-seekers on Nauru and PNG’s Manus Island were subjected to “cruel and degrading treatment” that must stop. “(There are) widespread reports of violence against refugees in Papua New Guinea and violence and sexual harassment of women and children on Nauru,” the letter said.

There are currently more than 200 people in the Nauru facility, according to the Refugee Council of Australia, including dozens of children.

Rights advocates say they are suffering mental health issues under the strain of indefinite detention, with reports of despondent children harming themselves.

However, the Canberra-bankrolled facility has been an economic lifeline for Nauru, which has an area of only 21 square kilometres (eight square miles) and has depleted its only natural resource, phosphate.

The Nauru government has imposed strict conditions on media covering the PIF summit, threatening to revoke journalists’ visas if they capture images of the camps or asylum-seekers.

It has also limited the number of reporters attending and barred Australia’s public broadcaster, the ABC, after taking exception to its coverage. (afp)

Lost at sea: ‘Thousands’ of dead migrants never identified

SENEGAL - In 2006, Khady Dieye’s husband left the family home on Senegal’s northern coast and boarded a dugout canoe in the hope of reaching Spain.

“Since then, we have not had any news of him,” said Dieye, who lives in the small fishing village of Ndiebene-Gandiol near SaintLouis.

Like many other would-be migrants, he disappeared, leaving his family not knowing whether he was dead or alive, stuck between hope and grief.

With thousands of migrants dying at sea every year across the globe, European and African governments are struggling to keep up with the deaths and identify the bodies, experts told AFP. “Many migrants’ bodies wash up here because of rip currents,” said the local deputy mayor, Arona Mael Sow, referring to notoriously dangerous coastal areas where river and sea waters mingle.

Despite close collaboration with the police and firemen, “there are always bodies we are not able to identify,” Sow told AFP. So families like Dieye’s go through the mourning process anyway, observing the proper rituals in this Muslim-majority country.

“We said the Koran and gave the alms five months later,” added the 50-year-old, who lives with her four children on a small plot of land.

Dieye heads a support group for families of missing migrants with the help of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), which posts their pictures online to help with the search.

Another villager, Safietou Ndiaye, said it took her family seven months to accept the probable death of her brother in 2006.

But not all families manage to do so.

“Some keep the hope that their relatives are still alive,” Ndieye said.

Earlier this month, a canoe carrying 150 would-be migrants from The Gambia ran aground in Dakar, the Atlantic port city and capital of Senegal.

Similar incidents have multiplied on the coast of Senegal and Mauritania in recent months -- sometimes with tragic outcomes.

And rescuing victims from the sea can make identification much harder because “bodies which have been taken out of the water have often started rotting,” a security official in Saint-Louis told AFP. In such cases, they are buried on the beach, he said.

Across the globe, the number of migrants who have died at sea is “enormous” but the rate at which they are identified remains “very low,” said Jose Baraybar, a Parisbased forensic expert who works for the International Committee of the Red Cross and was addressing a meeting in Dakar.

So local residents have teamed up to do their own investigations.

“We discuss the disappeared, how to identify them from their clothes, watches, faces, identity papers,” Dieye told AFP, saying her village was working with people from another village near Dakar. (afp)

Indonesia demonstrates superiority in pencak silat

JAKARTA - Martial arts Pencak Silat is not only a self-defense system but also a part of the cultural wealth of Indonesia that is always performed as an enchanting exhibition at several traditional ceremonies.

The Pencak Silat arts defense system is also well-known in various other Asian countries, such as Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, Singapore, the Philippines, and Thailand.

In Indonesia, the term “Pencak” is widely used in Java, while “Silat” is used in Sumatra, the Malay Peninsula, and Kalimantan.

However, in its development later, the term “Pencak” put forward the elements of art and beauty of movements, while “Silat” was the core of the teachings of martial arts in a fight.

With the 18th Asian Games 2018 held in Indonesia, the host country succeeded in including Pencak Silat to be competed in at the biggest Asian sporting event while at the same time showcasing its superiority in this newly contested sports category.

Of the 16 events and classes contested in Pencak Silat, Indonesia succeeded in winning 14 gold medals. Pencak Silat debuts at the Asian Games 2018 being held from Aug 18 to Sept 2, with 16 gold medals from 10 defense and six motion-art events at stake.

Until the conclusion of the competition in Pencak Silat on Wednesday, Aug 29, Indonesia had clinched eight gold in the defense categories and six gold in the artistic events.

The 14 gold medals and one bronze taken home by Indonesia exceeded the earlier target of the host country to win four gold medals in these events: two in combat and two in artistic events.

According to Prabowo, the assumption of cheating in the Pencak Silat competition should not be taken seriously. He is also optimistic that Pencak Silat will be competed in at the Olympics.

“I do not think that because Indonesia has dominated Pencak Silat, it will be removed. We are competing with a fair play.

Martial arts at the Asian Games is just a stepping stone to be able to competed in at the Olympics,” he stated.

He said that General Chairman of IPSI Prabowo Subianto had constantly reminded that Indonesian Pencak Silat athletes should always lay emphasis on quality while fighting in the arena to win medals.

Indonesia`s Chef de Mission at the 2018 Asian Games Commissioner General Police Syafruddin believes that Pencak Silat will be competed in the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.

“There are hopes and clear indications.

Talks on the matter are ongoing between the Asian Olympic Council (OCA) and the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI). We will wait for a few more days to know the results,” Syafruddin noted at a press conference at the Jakarta Convention Center, Senayan, Wednesday night (Aug 29).

Syafruddin remarked that sports climbing is another branch that Indonesia contin-

ues to fight for it to be competed at during the 2022 Asian Games.

“Competition in Pencak Silat is well covered by the electronic media in the form of recording matches. I took part in a fourday martial arts competition, and all had been recorded. If there were participants, who protested, we only need to replay the video,” Syafruddin, who is the state administrative and bureaucratic reform minister, stated.

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) congratulated Prabowo Subianto on the success of Indonesian pencak silat athletes in winning a total of 14 gold medals at the 18th Asian Games.

“Congratulations to my good and best friend Mr Subianto, the chairman of IPSI and also who leads Pencak Silat, on the success in the Asian Games,” Jokowi stated, after watching the pencak silat final

matches at the Pencak Silat Hall located in the Beautiful Indonesia in Miniature Park, East Jakarta, on Wednesday.

Retired general Subianto expressed pride that Pencak Silat was able to contribute gold medals to the nation.

“On behalf of the Indonesian nation, I want to convey my gratitude to everyone, who supports and prays for Indonesia`s athletes, particularly pencak silat athletes,” Subianto pointed out.

Until Wednesday (Aug 29), Indonesia had collected 30 gold, 22 silver, and 36 bronze medals. Indonesia is currently ranked fourth after China (102 gold-67 silver-50 bronze), Japan (51-47-63), and South Korea (37-42-50).

“We have discussed various issues to enhance bilateral ties. In the infrastructure sector, I have called on Indonesian state firm PT Wika to participate in infrastructure development in Namibia, especially to build public housing along with a local company in Namibia,” the president revealed.

Jokowi has held a discussion

with Geingob on the potential for Indonesia to develop two thousand social housing units and other big projects in Namibia.

“I have sought President Geingob`s support for the business deal to be signed during the Indonesia Africa Infrastructure Dialogue planned to be held in August 2019 in Bali,” he elaborated.

The two heads of state had also discussed on an agreement in other sectors, including in the trade,

maritime, and fishery sectors.

President Geingob is on a threeday state visit to Indonesia from Aug 29 to Sept 1. It was the first visit for the president. President Jokowi welcomed his Namibian counterpart, saying that it was an honor to welcome the Namibian delegation.

“Diplomatic ties between Indonesia and Namibia were established since May 13, 1991, and this will be the first visit for President Geingob to Indonesia as a president,”

Jokowi added.

The Namibian president and his entourage were greeted during a state welcome ceremony at the Bogor Presidential Palace.

Foreign Affairs Minister Retno LP Marsudi, Public Works and Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono, State Secretary Minister Pratikno, Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung, and Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman were present at the occasion.(ant)

Nadal, spared the worst of the heat thanks to his late-night start on Arthur Ashe Stadium, sped past Pospisil 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.

His only hiccup came in the second set, when he dropped his serve to fall 2-4 down.

“The conditions are tough,” Nadal said. “It was important to start very well with that break. To win in straight sets is always very positive, especially in these conditions. It’s almost midnight, very happy about the victory.”

Former champions Stan Wawrinka and Juan Martin del Potro also advanced, while 2012 winner Andy Murray, like Wawrinka back at Flushing Meadows after missing last year through injury, was bounced by Fernando Verdasco.

Wawrinka survived searing mid-day heat and a spirited Ugo Humbert.

SYDNEY - Usain Bolt is set to get a first taste of competitive football on Friday in a much-hyped game, but the sprint superstar admits he is nervous with his fitness levels not up to scratch.

The Jamaican is likely to be handed a 10 or 15 minute runout for Australia’s Central Coast Mariners in a friendly against an amateur side as he works towards his dream of earning a playing contract and becoming a professional footballer.

Such is the buzz swirling around the match that it will be broadcast live on pay TV and 10,000 fans are expected to cram into the Central Coast Stadium for what is normally a low-key pre-season fixture.

The club, which finished bottom of the domestic A-League last season, is planning fireworks and other entertainment to keep fans amused until Bolt makes his entrance.

All eyes will be on the eight-time Olympic champion with a local paper planning to distribute 100,000 cardboard cut-out face masks of the 32-year-old for onlookers to wear.

“I think that will be a bit weird, but not too weird,” Bolt, who favours playing left wing, joked of the masks. “I’ve seen a little bit of that in track and field. But it will be something new to play the first game and see that.”

Bolt dominated sprinting after taking double individual gold at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and he remains the world record holder for the 100 metres.

He went on to win a further six Olympic golds and pick up 11 world titles before retiring last year and pursuing his passion for football.

Despite being used to running in front of 100,000 spectators and millions of TV viewers, the nerves are jangling as he enters a new phase in his career, having tried out with several other clubs around the world to no avail.

“There will be nerves, definitely. It’s not like a charity game anymore, this is a career I’m pursuing,” said Bolt.

“I expect to make mistakes, but I also expect to go in, make myself proud and push myself.”

His football dream is still a work in progress, with Bolt admitting this week to struggling with the constant stop-start of the sport, unlike his usual quick fire sprint on the athletics track.

“He doesn’t have football fitness, which is natural. We have not brought him in and said you have to do this and do that by this time,” said Mariners coach Mike Mulvey, who has given Bolt an indefinite time to prove himself.

“For this Friday, it comes down to what the fitness coaches tell me with regards to how his body’s coping with the loading we’ve got at the moment.

Indonesia’s Hendro said it was a “miracle” to even finish the 50km race walk in Jakarta’s brutal pollution, heat and humidity Thursday after he was carried from the finish line on a stretcher.

Hendro collapsed after pounding the Indonesian capital’s smoggy streets for more than four-and-a-half hours in 31 Celsius (88 Fahrenheit) heat to finish last, in the Asian Games’ slowest 50km (31 miles) walk for nearly three decades.

The air quality index in central Jakarta hit 163 on Thursday morning. A reading of more than 150 is considered a health threat to the general population. After being doused in ice water by medics Hendro, 28, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, was carried to the medical centre shouting incoherently with pain.

“The race was so difficult -- the hot weather, humidity, and not just the humidity but the pollution,” he said after recovering. “Racing here is not easy. This is Indonesia.” “This is a miracle for me I can finish. This is a miracle,” he added.

Hayato Katsuki of Japan took gold with 4:03:30 -23 minutes slower than the last Asian Games -- with a well-judged race, after making holes in his vest to improve ventilation. Fellow Japanese Satoshi Maruo set the pace for much of the way but fell back in the final 10km, ending 10 minutes behind the winner and out of the medals.

Being born with six toes on each foot didn’t stop India’s Swapna Barman winning the Asian Games heptathlon -- but she immediately issued a plea for shoes that actually fit. Barman led going into the last of the seven heptathlon disciplines, the 800m -- her weakest event -- and managed to cling on despite a fourth-placed finish as her closest rival came in last.

The Indian athlete, who still has all dozen of her toes, said every step of the race had been excruciating as she pushed through the pain barrier in her ill-fitting footwear.

“Normal shoes don’t work for me. There is lot of pain when I wear any shoe, spikes or anything,” she said after clinching gold late on Wednesday.

“I hope they make special shoes for me because I have a lot of pain.”

“Even warm-up shoes hurt, so forget about spikes.” Barman, 21, shot to attention last year by taking gold at the Asian Championships in India.

She then suffered a string of ankle and back injuries that kept

her out for most of a year, but came back in time to finish second in India’s Asian Games qualifiers. In Jakarta she won her specialist high jump, as well as the shot put and javelin, to record a personal best score of 6,026, despite her woes on the track.

From a poor family in the east Indian town of Jalpaiguri, she said she has never considered surgery to remove the additional digits, blaming the extra width of her feet for the pain.

Her feet were not her only concern as she raced to victory on Wednesday night -- she also had to contend with acute toothache, which she blame on her sweet tooth. “I used to to eat a lot of chocolates so have a lot of pain in one of my teeth before the start of the competition,” she told reporters, wearing heavy strapping on her chin.

Jakarta’s air pollution came under fire earlier in the Games when activists unfurled a giant banner showing a person wearing a gas mask and the message “#WeBreatheTheSameAir”.

Nadal, spared the worst of the heat thanks to his late-night start on Arthur Ashe Stadium, sped past Pospisil 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.

His only hiccup came in the second set, when he dropped his serve to fall 2-4 down.

“The conditions are tough,” Nadal said. “It was important to start very well with that break. To win in straight sets is always very positive, especially in these conditions. It’s almost midnight, very happy about the victory.”

Former champions Stan Wawrinka and Juan Martin del Potro also advanced, while 2012 winner Andy Murray, like Wawrinka back at Flushing Meadows after missing last year through injury, was bounced by Fernando Verdasco.

Wawrinka survived searing mid-day heat and a spirited Ugo Humbert.

“I knew it would be a difficult match,” said Wawrinka, who was pleased to find himself feeling fit after prevailing 7-6 (7/5), 4-6,

He gave himself a mixed review after a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 loss to Spain’s Fernando Verdasco, whose only win over Murray in 14 prior meetings was at the 2009 Australian Open.

“I think some of the tennis I played today was some of the best I’ve played since I had the surgery or since I came back,” said Murray.

He was disappointed to surrender the first set after holding a set point, but pleased he had enough in the tank to push Verdasco through five break points in the final game before the Spaniard converted his third match point.

Even with his current limitations, Murray is a dangerous opponent, Verdasco said.

“He’s an unbelievable player, so talented. No matter how much his hip hurts or whatever, he’s going to fight and he’s going to put all the balls he can in and run,” Verdasco said after earning a third-round meeting with 2009 champion del Potro.

SYDNEY - Usain Bolt is set to get a first taste of competitive football on Friday in a much-hyped game, but the sprint superstar admits he is nervous with his fitness levels not up to scratch.

The Jamaican is likely to be handed a 10 or 15 minute runout for Australia’s Central Coast Mariners in a friendly against an amateur side as he works towards his dream of earning a playing contract and becoming a professional footballer.

Such is the buzz swirling around the match that it will be broadcast live on pay TV and 10,000 fans are expected to cram into the Central Coast Stadium for what is normally a low-key pre-season fixture.

The club, which finished bottom of the domestic A-League last season, is planning fireworks and other entertainment to keep fans amused until Bolt makes his entrance.

All eyes will be on the eight-time Olympic champion with a local paper planning to distribute 100,000 cardboard cut-out face masks of the 32-year-old for onlookers to wear.

“I think that will be a bit weird, but not too weird,” Bolt, who favours playing left wing, joked of the masks. “I’ve seen a little bit of that in track and field. But it will be something new to play the first game and see that.”

Bolt dominated sprinting after taking double individual gold at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and he remains the world record holder for the 100 metres.

He went on to win a further six Olympic golds and pick up 11 world titles before retiring last year and pursuing his passion for football.

Despite being used to running in front of 100,000 spectators and millions of TV viewers, the nerves are jangling as he enters a new phase in his career, having tried out with several other clubs around the world to no avail.

“There will be nerves, definitely. It’s not like a charity game anymore, this is a career I’m pursuing,” said Bolt.

“I expect to make mistakes, but I also expect to go in, make myself proud and push myself.”

His football dream is still a work in progress, with Bolt admitting this week to struggling with the constant stop-start of the sport, unlike his usual quick fire sprint on the athletics track.

“He doesn’t have football fitness, which is natural. We have not brought him in and said you have to do this and do that by this time,” said Mariners coach Mike Mulvey, who has given Bolt an indefinite time to prove himself.

“For this Friday, it comes down to what the fitness coaches tell me with regards to how his body’s coping with the loading we’ve got at the moment.

Pacific leaders urged to demand end to Australia’s refugee camps

WELLINGTON - Amnesty International joined 80 other NGOs on Thursday in urging Pacific leaders demand the closure of an Australian-funded immigration detention camp on Nauru when they meet in the tiny island nation next week.

The 18-nation Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) will hold its annual summit in Nauru from September 3-6, with delegates meeting just a few kilometres from the camp dubbed “Australia’s Guantanamo”.

It houses asylum-seekers who have tried to reach Australia by boat and are processed in remote facilities on Nauru and Papua New Guinea under Canberra’s hardline immigration policies.

Australia says offshore processing is necessary to deter illegal boat arrivals and prevent deaths at sea on the treacherous journey.

Amnesty, along with the 80 other non-government organisations, released an open letter calling on PIF leaders to act and end “a stain on the region”.

“Pacific island leaders cannot ignore this issue any longer and need to ensure that it is at the very top of the forum’s agenda,” Amnesty’s Pacific researcher Roshika Deo said.

“This is a desperate situation that requires urgent action. Regional leaders must show that they will not

stand by while the Australian government’s abusive policies continue to risk more lives.”

The rights groups said asylum-seekers on Nauru and PNG’s Manus Island were subjected to “cruel and degrading treatment” that must stop. “(There are) widespread reports of violence against refugees in Papua New Guinea and violence and sexual harassment of women and children on Nauru,” the letter said.

There are currently more than 200 people in the Nauru facility, according to the Refugee Council of Australia, including dozens of children.

Rights advocates say they are suffering mental health issues under the strain of indefinite detention, with reports of despondent children harming themselves.

However, the Canberra-bankrolled facility has been an economic lifeline for Nauru, which has an area of only 21 square kilometres (eight square miles) and has depleted its only natural resource, phosphate.

The Nauru government has imposed strict conditions on media covering the PIF summit, threatening to revoke journalists’ visas if they capture images of the camps or asylum-seekers.

It has also limited the number of reporters attending and barred Australia’s public broadcaster, the ABC, after taking exception to its coverage. (afp)

Lost at sea: ‘Thousands’ of dead migrants never identified

SENEGAL - In 2006, Khady Dieye’s husband left the family home on Senegal’s northern coast and boarded a dugout canoe in the hope of reaching Spain.

“Since then, we have not had any news of him,” said Dieye, who lives in the small fishing village of Ndiebene-Gandiol near SaintLouis.

Like many other would-be migrants, he disappeared, leaving his family not knowing whether he was dead or alive, stuck between hope and grief.

With thousands of migrants dying at sea every year across the globe, European and African governments are struggling to keep up with the deaths and identify the bodies, experts told AFP. “Many migrants’ bodies wash up here because of rip currents,” said the local deputy mayor, Arona Mael Sow, referring to notoriously dangerous coastal areas where river and sea waters mingle.

Despite close collaboration with the police and firemen, “there are always bodies we are not able to identify,” Sow told AFP. So families like Dieye’s go through the mourning process anyway, observing the proper rituals in this Muslim-majority country.

“We said the Koran and gave the alms five months later,” added the 50-year-old, who lives with her four children on a small plot of land.

Dieye heads a support group for families of missing migrants with the help of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), which posts their pictures online to help with the search.

Another villager, Safietou Ndiaye, said it took her family seven months to accept the probable death of her brother in 2006.

But not all families manage to do so.

“Some keep the hope that their relatives are still alive,” Ndieye said.

Earlier this month, a canoe carrying 150 would-be migrants from The Gambia ran aground in Dakar, the Atlantic port city and capital of Senegal.

Similar incidents have multiplied on the coast of Senegal and Mauritania in recent months -- sometimes with tragic outcomes.

And rescuing victims from the sea can make identification much harder because “bodies which have been taken out of the water have often started rotting,” a security official in Saint-Louis told AFP. In such cases, they are buried on the beach, he said.

Across the globe, the number of migrants who have died at sea is “enormous” but the rate at which they are identified remains “very low,” said Jose Baraybar, a Parisbased forensic expert who works for the International Committee of the Red Cross and was addressing a meeting in Dakar.

So local residents have teamed up to do their own investigations.

“We discuss the disappeared, how to identify them from their clothes, watches, faces, identity papers,” Dieye told AFP, saying her village was working with people from another village near Dakar. (afp)

Indonesia demonstrates superiority in pencak silat

JAKARTA - Martial arts Pencak Silat is not only a self-defense system but also a part of the cultural wealth of Indonesia that is always performed as an enchanting exhibition at several traditional ceremonies.

The Pencak Silat arts defense system is also well-known in various other Asian countries, such as Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, Singapore, the Philippines, and Thailand.

In Indonesia, the term “Pencak” is widely used in Java, while “Silat” is used in Sumatra, the Malay Peninsula, and Kalimantan.

However, in its development later, the term “Pencak” put forward the elements of art and beauty of movements, while “Silat” was the core of the teachings of martial arts in a fight.

With the 18th Asian Games 2018 held in Indonesia, the host country succeeded in including Pencak Silat to be competed in at the biggest Asian sporting event while at the same time showcasing its superiority in this newly contested sports category.

Of the 16 events and classes contested in Pencak Silat, Indonesia succeeded in winning 14 gold medals. Pencak Silat debuts at the Asian Games 2018 being held from Aug 18 to Sept 2, with 16 gold medals from 10 defense and six motion-art events at stake.

Until the conclusion of the competition in Pencak Silat on Wednesday, Aug 29, Indonesia had clinched eight gold in the defense categories and six gold in the artistic events.

The 14 gold medals and one bronze taken home by Indonesia exceeded the earlier target of the host country to win four gold medals in these events: two in combat and two in artistic events.

Executive Board Chairman of the Indonesian Pencak Silat Association (IPSI) and also the pencak silat manager Edhy Prabowo denied claims of any cheating that enabled Indonesia to win eight gold medals from 10 numbers competed in the Asian Games finals on Monday (Aug 27).

“Many people doubt that Pencak Silat will be competed again in the next sporting (Asian Games) event. I say no, there is no doubt. There is a digital record, we speak about quality. We get that gold because of quality,” Prabowo emphasized.

According to Prabowo, the assumption of cheating in the Pencak Silat competition should not be taken seriously. He is also optimistic that Pencak Silat will be competed in at the Olympics.

“I do not think that because Indonesia has dominated Pencak Silat, it will be removed. We are competing with a fair play.

Martial arts at the Asian Games is just a stepping stone to be able to competed in at the Olympics,” he stated.

He said that General Chairman of IPSI Prabowo Subianto had constantly reminded that Indonesian Pencak Silat athletes should always lay emphasis on quality while fighting in the arena to win medals.

Indonesia`s Chef de Mission at the 2018 Asian Games Commissioner General Police Syafruddin believes that Pencak Silat will be competed in the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.

“There are hopes and clear indications.

Talks on the matter are ongoing between the Asian Olympic Council (OCA) and the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI). We will wait for a few more days to know the results,” Syafruddin noted at a press conference at the Jakarta Convention Center, Senayan, Wednesday night (Aug 29).

Syafruddin remarked that sports climbing is another branch that Indonesia contin-

ues to fight for it to be competed at during the 2022 Asian Games.

“Competition in Pencak Silat is well covered by the electronic media in the form of recording matches. I took part in a fourday martial arts competition, and all had been recorded. If there were participants, who protested, we only need to replay the video,” Syafruddin, who is the state administrative and bureaucratic reform minister, stated.

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) congratulated Prabowo Subianto on the success of Indonesian pencak silat athletes in winning a total of 14 gold medals at the 18th Asian Games.

“Congratulations to my good and best friend Mr Subianto, the chairman of IPSI and also who leads Pencak Silat, on the success in the Asian Games,” Jokowi stated, after watching the pencak silat final

matches at the Pencak Silat Hall located in the Beautiful Indonesia in Miniature Park, East Jakarta, on Wednesday.

Retired general Subianto expressed pride that Pencak Silat was able to contribute gold medals to the nation.

“On behalf of the Indonesian nation, I want to convey my gratitude to everyone, who supports and prays for Indonesia`s athletes, particularly pencak silat athletes,” Subianto pointed out.

Until Wednesday (Aug 29), Indonesia had collected 30 gold, 22 silver, and 36 bronze medals. Indonesia is currently ranked fourth after China (102 gold-67 silver-50 bronze), Japan (51-47-63), and South Korea (37-42-50).

“We have discussed various issues to enhance bilateral ties. In the infrastructure sector, I have called on Indonesian state firm PT Wika to participate in infrastructure development in Namibia, especially to build public housing along with a local company in Namibia,” the president revealed.

Jokowi has held a discussion

with Geingob on the potential for Indonesia to develop two thousand social housing units and other big projects in Namibia.

“I have sought President Geingob`s support for the business deal to be signed during the Indonesia Africa Infrastructure Dialogue planned to be held in August 2019 in Bali,” he elaborated.

The two heads of state had also discussed on an agreement in other sectors, including in the trade,

maritime, and fishery sectors.

President Geingob is on a threeday state visit to Indonesia from Aug 29 to Sept 1. It was the first visit for the president. President Jokowi welcomed his Namibian counterpart, saying that it was an honor to welcome the Namibian delegation.

“Diplomatic ties between Indonesia and Namibia were established since May 13, 1991, and this will be the first visit for President Geingob to Indonesia as a president,”

Jokowi added.

BUSINESS India’s RBI says almost all banned notes returned Almost all Indian currency notes scrapped two years ago have been returned to the banking system, the country’s central bank says, raising questions about the point of the controversial attempt to tackle illegal money.

India’s economy suffered a sharp downturn after Prime Minister Narendra Modi stunned the country in November 2016 by withdrawing 86 percent of banknotes from circulation in a move known as “demonetisation”.

He said the decision to scrap all 1,000rupee ($14) and 500-rupee notes was necessary to clean up India’s graft-ridden economy, suggesting that stashes of so-called black money would be unearthed.

The government said it would leave people hiding large sums of illegal cash with a difficult decision: either declare the money and face possible criminal action or do nothing, rendering it worthless.

However, late Wednesday the Reserve Bank of India announced in its annual report that 15.3 trillion rupees ($216.4 billion) worth -- or 99.3 percent -- of the devalued bills had been returned.

The RBI, which added that it had completed its assessment of demonetisation, gave no explanation for what that meant for the success of the policy.

But analysts and opposition politicians said it proved Indians were not hoarding unaccounted for or counterfeit notes at home.

They argue instead that illegal money is hidden through so-called “benami” transactions, where assets such as properties are registered in false or third-party names, which the cash ban did nothing to combat.

“The report shows that demonetisation has failed in its primary objective,” Ashutosh Datar, a Mumbai-based economist, told AFP. Indians are heavily dependent on cash.

Around 90 percent of everyday transactions were being carried out in cash at the time of the ban.

Critics say demonetisation caused unnecessary suffering to millions of India’s poor who operate outside of the formal economy while the IMF said this month that it had caused “an acute monetary shock”.

India grew 7.5 percent in the quarter preceding Modi’s announcement but growth fell as low as 5.7 percent in mid-2017 as it reeled from demonetisation and other economic reforms, including the introduction of a nationwide goods and services tax.

While 5.7 is an impressive rate by the standard of Western economies, commentators say Asia’s third-largest economy -- with its population of 1.25 billion -- should be expanding at around eight percent.

India’s economy has since bounced back and grew 7.7 percent for the quarter from January to March this year, the highest rate since before the demonetisation.(afp)

US economy grew at a brisk 4.2 pct. annual rate last quarter

WASHINGTON - The U.S. economy grew at a strong 4.2 percent annual rate in the April-June quarter, the best showing in nearly four years, as growth stayed on track to produce its strongest full-year gain in more than a decade.

Strength in business investment offset slightly slower consumer spending.

The Commerce Department on Wednesday revised up its growth estimate for last quarter from an initial estimate of a 4.1 percent annual rate. The second quarter marked a sharp improvement from a 2.2 percent gain in the January-March period, though some of the strength last quarter came from temporary factors, including a surge in U.S exports before tariffs were to take effect.

Economists expect growth to slow to a still solid 3 percent annual rate the rest of the year, resulting in full-year growth of 3 percent for 2018. It would be the best performance since 2005, two years before the Great Recession began.

The 4.2 percent annual growth that the government estimated for last quarter is the strongest such figure since a 4.3 percent annual gain in the third quarter of 2014. The expectation of 3 percent growth for 2018 as a whole would be up from gains of 1.6 percent in 2016 and 2.2 percent last year.

Since the recovery began in mid-2009, growth has been sub-par, with annual gains averaging just 2.2 percent, making it the weakest recovery in the post-war period.

President Donald Trump often pointed to that fact during the 2016 presidential campaign to attack the economic record of the Obama administration. He has touted the pickup in growth, as measured by the gross domestic product, as evidence that his economic program of tax cuts, deregulation and tougher

enforcement of trade agreements is working.

Last month, Trump proclaimed that the GDP figure showed that the United States was now the “economy envy of the world.”

While forecasting solid growth of around 3 percent this year, economists contend that this performance is being pumped up for now by the $1.5 trillion tax cut Trump pushed through Congress last year, along with increased government spending. Many analysts say they think that those factors will begin to fade starting next year and that by 2020, growth may even slow enough to edge the economy close to a possible recession.

Gus Faucher, chief economist at PNC, said he foresees GDP growth this year of 3.4 percent, which he thinks will slow to 2.4 percent in 2019 and 1.6 percent in 2020 “as the fiscal stimulus from tax cuts and spending fades.”

Faucher said he thinks that continued interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve will also act to slow growth. Trump has recently criticized the Fed, saying he is “unhappy” with its rate hikes, arguing that they pose a threat to the faster growth he is trying to fuel with his economic policies.

Some economists said Wednesday’s upward revision to GDP would give the Fed, which has already raised rates twice this year, leeway to do so twice more before year’s end, as it has signaled it expects to do.

“The economy’s good fortune is giving Fed officials the green light to take away the

emergency stimulus left over from the recession and financial crisis a decade ago,” said Chris Rupkey, chief financial economist at MUFG Union Bank.

Trump administration officials reject outside forecasts that growth will inevitably slow after this year. They suggest that the Trump policies will unleash an economic boom that will deliver annual growth rates of 3 percent or better over the next decade.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, in a CNBC interview Tuesday, pointed to the solid GDP performance in the spring as evidence that the administration is fulfilling Trump’s campaign promises regarding the economy.

“We are delivering on what was the president’s economic agenda about creating growth,” Mnuchin said.

Wednesday’s GDP report showed that consumer spending, which accounts for about 70 percent of economic activity, expanded at a strong annual rate of 3.8 percent in the second quarter, down slightly from an initial estimate of 4 percent growth in consumer spending.

But that downward revision was outweighed by other factors including stronger business investment, which grew at a 6.2 percent rate, driven by spending on such items as computer software.

Other sources of strength were less growth in imports, which subtract from GDP, and faster growth in government spending at the federal and state and local levels. (ap)

Usaba Muhu-Muhu at Timbrah Customary Village

There is no day without a religious ceremony. It is the characteristic life on the Island of Bali or the Island of the Gods. One of them is the Usaba MuhuMuhu at Timbrah customary village, Pertima, Karangasem. People at this village have a philosophy of high significance to maintain the integrity and harmony of their residents. It is reflected in the Usaba Muhu–Muhu ritual. This ceremony was held on Saturday (Jan. 9). It is implemented in the form of caru desa or animal sacrifice aiming to neutralize bhuta kala into bhuta hita. Thus, residents continue to live in harmony as well as the universe.

Implementation of this tradition is starting from nyaga ritual. Three days before the Usaba Muhu-Muhu, residents carry out this ritual to neutralize bhuta kala in smaller scale, so as not to disturb other’s courtyard.

This ritual is also called metuun buah. At the time of Usaba Muhu-Muhu, balancing ritual is performed in a higher level by the customary village with the caru sacrificing a cow.

Undagi procession when slaughtering cow for the caru oblation always draws the attention of surrounding residents. The cow tied to a concrete pole is slaughtered by the undagi and this lasts tensely. It is thrashing about when slaughtered so that makes people tense.

However, this procession is more secure than a similar ritual at Asak village, where the cow is released and then bombarded with swords, machetes and other sharp weapons, when the Usaba Kaulu held at the village.

Nengah Sukada, the local community leader, conveyed that the tradition is held once a year, precisely every new moon of the seventh month in Balinese calendar or around January. Residents of the support-

ing villages and two sesabu hamlets come down to carry out the task of devotional works at their respective hamlet to prepare ritual means.

After the procession is over, people carry out prayers at the Dalem Tengah Temple.

Ritual at this temple is officiated over by great-grandfather and dahyang. Greatgrandparent officiates over the offerings in

the kemulan shrine on the pedestal, while the dahyang officiates over the kemulan offerings under the pedestal. Interestingly, after saying prayers together, local residents ranging from parents to children join a shared meal or megibung, enjoying the beef as the remainder of the ritual means. Residents sit together in place that have been provided by customary village, such as meeting pavilion,

long pavilion and gamelan troupe pavilion.

Some other sources at the local village mention that the tradition of Usaba MuhuMuhu is also considered as the implementation of the Shiva Purana, namely when Durgha goes up against the Mahisasura giant cow or buffalo. Eating rice porridge will be more delicious when accompanied with crackers of fried sticky cake.

The ingredients used consist of rice waste, local spices, bay leaves and water. The spices are dominated with turmeric, then add a little galangal, ginger, aromatic ginger, garlic, onion, chili, coriander, pepper, candlenut, shrimp paste,

coconut oil and salt (to taste) and a bay leaf (to taste) as well.

Preparation: first of all, turmeric, galangal, ginger and aromatic ginger are finely chopped. Onion and garlic are sliced ??and then mixed with other ingredients, and then ground to make it smooth.

Similarly, candlenut, pepper and coriander can be crushed or blender to be smoothed, too. After that, put into the basin and then cook the rice waste and add coconut oil. Stir it well so the seasoning can mix thoroughly with the rice.

The next process is to put the mixed rice into the pan. Add water and salt to taste. Put spinach or sweet leaves and two pieces of bay leaves. Heat it for about 20 minutes or until cooked. Finally, take out the porridge and now it is ready to be served. In order to taste better, it can be added with fried onions and crispy crackers. (kmb)

Development of Agro Techno Park in Petang to be assessed

KUALA LUMPUR - A famed Malaysian Hindu temple complex has had its steps painted in a dazzling array of colours, sparking excitement from some visitors but angering officials who oversee heritage sites.

The Batu Caves complex, a series of caverns set in a limestone hill on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, is popular with devotees from Malaysia’s ethnic Indian minority and tourists, with a regular stream of people clambering up the 272 steps to reach the temples.

The steps have been painted in a kaleidoscope of bright colours ahead of a Hindu ritual that is conducted in temples every 12 years, which will take place Friday.

But the temple management

committee has found itself in hot water with the government heritage department, after allegedly failing to seek permission to paint the steps.

The committee will receive a warning letter from the department, while Deputy Culture Minister Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik said he was “very disappointed” and the work had “disturbed the harmony, integrity and originality of Batu Caves”, the Star newspaper reported.

He played down the possibility of the complex losing its heritage status, but urged others running historic sites to get consent before carrying out major work or renovations.

But the paint job on the steps, which were previously the same colour as the limestone hillside,

impressed tourists visiting the complex.

Ratna Yunita from Indonesia described it as “out of the ordinary”.

“So many colours, so many people in such a beautiful place, it feels like you’re in India, not in Malaysia,” she told AFP. Batu Caves is an important religious site for Tamil Hindus.

During the annual Thaipusam festival, massive crowds of devotees descend on the complex, with many piercing their bodies with hooks and skewers to showcase devotion to the deity Lord Murugan.

DENPASAR — Bank loans have not evenly distributed in Bali.

Such uneven distribution happens because the absorbability of the community remains low. In Bali, the largest loan absorption is in Denpasar City reaching 54.5 percent, Badung district (14.4 percent) and Buleleng (8.39 percent).

Head of the Financial Service Authority (OJK) for Bali and Nusa Tenggara Region, Hizbullah, said the loan distribution in Bali amounted to IDR 83.9 trillion. “The largest loan distribution is in Denpasar City because Denpasar has the most business activities,” he said.

After Denpasar is Badung district accounting for 14.4 percent because it poses the center of the tourism industry and Buleleng reaches 8.39 percent. Meanwhile, the largest loan growth in Bali happens in three districts, namely Buleleng reaching 16.55 percent a year, Klungkung district (10.68 percent) and Bangli district (7.69 percent).

Meanwhile, the business sector receiving the most loan is consumption (non-business field), amounting to 38.06 percent. Usually consumer loans are for mortgages. The second sector is wholesale and retail trade reaching 31.62 percent as well as accommodation, food and beverage (8.9 percent).

So, the loan distribution to productive sector is low.

tribution happens because Bali’s economy has not fully recovered yet following the eruption of Mount Agung. In addition, the earthquake that occurred in Lombok also affected the economy of Bali.

Another impact causing the low loan absorbability is the impact of global economy, namely trade competition between the United States and China.

In 2016, the growth even reached 23.14 percent compared to the previous year. Uniqueness of culture and natural beauty make Bali favored. So, it is not surprising that many parties, especially tourism players, are optimistic about Bali that will remain the leading tourist destination, especially for foreign tourists. In addition, many potential is still untapped.

The number of tourist growth in 2016 should be observed by tourism stakeholders, especially the government. Suppose the growth far exceeds that number, such as touching dozens of millions of people, is Bali ready to anticipate it? In terms of tourist accommodation, it can be said that Bali is still ready because every year many hotels, villas and restaurants are established.

Currently, the number of tourist accommodation is too much so that they result in unfair competition. However, if related to infrastructure, especially roads, Bali is not yet capable of doing it. Let alone accommodate tens of millions of tourists, currently many main road sections and those leading to tourist destinations are always imbued with crowdedness and traffic congestion.

It means the homework of Bali’s infrastructure remains a myriad. The government may not ignore it because one of the things that must be available for tourism development is infrastructure, especially roads. Promotion program increases the number of tourist visits without being accompanied with gradual improvements in infrastructure in terms of quantity and quality. Surely, this will be very dangerous for Bali.

Other than connecting roads between the districts / municipality, the improvement and addition of alternative routes is still very necessary. Currently, tourists tend to look for new tourist destinations where some of them are located outside the main routes. (kmb25)

DENPASAR - The Ministry of Communication and Informatics in collaboration with the Media and Election Caucus held an Editor’s Forum entitled: “Dignified Media for Quality Elections” at the Inna Grand Bali Beach, Sanur, Denpasar, on Wednesday (Aug. 29).

The event attended by editors in chief and journalists from a number of mass media in Bali presented four speakers; Chairman of the Press Council for the tenure of 2010-2016, Bagir Manan, Deputy Chairman of the Press Council for the tenure of 20102013, Bambang Harymurti, Member of the Press Council for the tenure of 2010-2013, Agus Sudibyo, and expert staff to the Directorate General of Information and Public Communication, Ahmed Kurnia.

Agus Sudibyo said that political upheaval ahead of the 2019 legislative election and presidential election has already begun to emerge, especially on social media. The mass media should not complicate the situation, but instead play a role in cooling things down when they start to heat up, he said. They also have a major role in reminding the public to maintain national unity. This is important in creating a more qualified and dignified political space that can become a reference for the public, explained Sudibiyo.

“Research indicates the interesting fact that 71 percent of people still believe in journalistic mass media as a good source of information. How to maintain this trust will become the next issue because 71 percent of Indonesia’s population also access to social media as a source of their information”, he said.

Sudibyo, public confidence in social media is slightly higher at 59 percent than confidence in the mass media which is recorded at only 51 percent. Therefore, it is important to maintain public trust by making sure that our mass media provides something better than social media – namely more reliable and higher quality information.

“The public will continue to access the mass media if they are given something better and that they don’t get it from social media.

The only way to survive is by providing dignified journalism.

Media must maintain their independence and professionalism”, he explained.

Bagir Manan agreed that the press must be able to maintain its independence. Moreover, it is impossible to quell social media as such sources of information represent a form of freedom of speech and are part of the natural development of science and technology. The press must return to its function of enlightening the public and being the public’s eyes and ears. Thus, people coming to the ballot box during the elections are doing so out of their awareness about the importance of participating in the electoral process and not because they have been mobilized by interested parties.

“The press is born and rooted in independence, so that the press needs to have the courage to claim it’s due place in the public sphere. As a social institution, the press can only survive if it maintains public confidence. Therefore, mass media needs to remain impartial and on the side of public interest”, said Manan.

This does not however mean that the press cannot take sides with power, added Manan, explaining that this is fine as long as power is being exercised for public interest.

Head of the Center for Research & Development of Informatics Applications and Public Information and Communication at the Ministry of Communication and Information, Wiryanta, said that he hopes the press can carry out a positive and responsible role in ensuring good quality elections and added that there is is also a need for the public to be discerning about the information they access. Four governors have different backgrounds

DENPASAR - The four leaders that have led Bali as governor came from different backgrounds: educator, administrator and executor and the new elected governor of Bali is a politician with experience in the central government.

Businessman I Gede Wirata, who has been involved in the tourism sector since 1977 believes that the new elected Governor of Bali is arriving to this post accompanied by staff who are well established in terms of both knowledge and experience. “They have already been educated by the previous governor. I am sure that every local government head is already good at their job”, he said on Wednesday (Aug. 29).

Since 1977, when he was still a college student, Wirata has been involved in the private sector and over the years he has witnessed the leadership of four Balinese governors who all came form the Island of the Gods.

Mantra was very concerned with making philosophy-based plans. “He had a lot of expertise and was a great person. I know this to be true from his ten years of leading Bali”, said Wirata.

Mantra’s leadership was followed by that of I.B. Oka who created a lot of infrastructure including implanting I.B. Mantra’s idea of creating a bypass known today as Jalan I. B. Mantra, as well as the campus of Udayana University opening the region of South Kuta. Under I.B Oka; leadership the Nikko Hotel was established as well as Pecatu Graha and the expansion of the airport.

Ed Sheeran reveals he played himself in Danny Boyle’s new film

LONDON - Ed Sheeran has revealed he spent a “very intense two months” playing himself in Danny Boyle’s latest movie - and performing concerts at the same time.

The as-yet-untitled film, written

by Love Actually’s Richard Curtis, is a “very, very original story”, Sheeran said.

In it, former Eastenders actor Himesh Patel plays a singersongwriter who wakes up one day to find out he is the only person in the world who remembers The Beatles.

Sheeran discovers him and takes him on tour.

“Then he gets much, much bigger than me through doing stuff,” Sheeran said. “Yeah, it’s very clever.”

Discussing his part, Sheeran said he “got to actually kind of learn how to act”.

In contrast, his “Game of Thrones thing” simply involved “popping in for a day and making a cameo”.

This time, however, he was spending “full days on set, like full

12-hour days”.

Sheeran explained: “They shot it around loads of my gigs. So it was a very intense two months, because I would have four days of gigging and then three days of shooting a film.

“I was playing myself, so I don’t think I was that bad. There wasn’t much to (mess) up.”

The 27-year-old has also revealed he would like to make a musical for the big screen, in which “songs dictate the film in a way”.

“I can’t see myself playing an Avenger, you know? I don’t really want to be actor,” he confided.

The star features in a new documentary made by Apple Music called Songwriter, which looks at the making of his last album, Divide.

While it features a scene with his fiancee, Cherry Seaborn, it does not delve into his personal life.

LOS ANGELES - A man who hacked into more than 200 iCloud accounts of Hollywood stars, including Jennifer Lawrence, has been jailed for eight months.

George Garofano was sentenced in Bridgeport, Connecticut, where he was told he must also serve three years of supervised released and perform 60 hours of community service.

Garofano was one of four men arrested in the 2014 hacking scandal that led to private photos of Lawrence, Kirsten Dunst, Kate Upton and others being made public.

Authorities say the hackers used

a phishing scheme that sent emails appearing to be from Apple security accounts that asked for usernames and passwords.

Garofano pleaded guilty in April and asked for leniency, saying he faces a lifetime loss of rights because of the felony conviction.

Speaking at the time of the leak, Lawrence told Vanity Fair magazine she believed she had been the

victim of a “sex crime”.

“Just because I’m a public figure, just because I’m an actress, does not mean that I asked for this,” the Hunger Games star said.

“It does not mean that it comes with the territory. It’s my body, and it should be my choice, and the fact that it is not my choice is absolutely disgusting. I can’t believe that we even live in that kind of world.” (net)

WWII bomb defused in Germany after 18,500 evacuated

A German bomb disposal team on Sunday successfully defused an unexploded World War II bomb that had forced the evacuation of 18,500 people in the city of Ludwigshafen. The 500kilogramme (1,100-pound) aerial bomb, thought to have been dropped by American forces, was discovered during construction work earlier in the week.

“Good news: the bomb has been defused! Citizens may return to their homes,” the city of Ludwigshafen said on its official Twitter feed.

It also posted a picture of the freshly unearthed, corroded bomb, strapped to a pallet before being removed from the area.

Authorities in the western city had ordered all those living within a 1,000-metre (0.6-mile) radius of the bomb site to leave their homes from 08:00 am (0600 GMT) as a precaution ahead of the defusing operation.

It took the bomb squad just over an hour to complete the deli-

cate task, and the all-clear was given shortly after 2:00 pm.

More than 70 years after the end of World War II, Germany remains littered with unexploded ordnance, a legacy of the intense Allied bombing campaign against Nazi Germany.

In the biggest post-war evacu-

ation to date, some 60,000 Frankfurt residents were evacuated last year so that an unexploded 1.8-tonne British bomb dubbed the “blockbuster” could be defused.

In April, thousands had to clear an area around Berlin’s central railway station after another British bomb was discovered on a building site.

Unexploded munitions have also complicated the work of firefighters this summer, with

forest fires sparked by a spell of hot, dry weather setting off long-buried ordnance, causing small explosions on several occasions.
