‘Don’t Breathe’ scores, ousts ‘Suicide Squad’ at box office

LOS ANGELES — The horror movie “Don’t Breathe” has reason to let out a big sigh of relief. Audiences turned out in droves for the late summer thriller, which brought in $26.1 million, according to studio estimates released Sunday.

That’s more than double the early predictions for how the scary pic would perform and far above the modest production budget, which was reportedly less than $10 million. Stage 6 Films produced and Sony’s Screen Gems oversaw distribution.

“Don’t Breathe” is about a group of Detroit teens who chose the wrong house to rob — that of a blind, vengeful veteran. It stars Jane Levy and Dylan Minnette and was directed by Fede Alvarez, who is known for the “Evil Dead” remake.

Sony Pictures Marketing Chief Josh Greenstein noted how rare it was for a film in this genre to have resonated so deeply with critics. The current Rotten Tomatoes score is a very fresh 87 percent. It also continues Sony’s summer of seeing successes with original films that cost very little to make.

“This marks a string of very profitable hits for Sony with very modest budgets. ‘The Shallows,’ ‘Sausage Party’ and now ‘Don’t Breathe’ were all incredibly profitable because they were made for modest budgets and did incredibly well at the box office,” Greenstein said.

It’s also the latest horror success for Hollywood this summer, which has seen films like “Lights Out,” ‘’The Conjuring 2,” and “The Purge: Election Year” thrive while their bigger budget, spectacle-driven counterparts flailed.

“As it turns out horror is the least scary genre this summer, especially to the bean counters in Hollywood,” said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for box office tracker comScore. “(They) can almost always be counted on to make money.” Horror films, Dergarabedian said, perform very well on home video too.

SINGAPORE - Australia, Taiwan and South Korea advised pregnant women and those attempting to get pregnant to avoid travel to Singapore after an outbreak of the Zika virus infected more than 50 people in the city-state.

The outbreak and the warnings come as a potential blow to tourism in one of the world’s busiest travel hubs, which is already struggling to recover from a slump amid tepid global growth.

Singapore reported its first case of locally-transmitted Zika at the weekend, and the number of reported infections of the mosquito-borne virus has since jumped to 56. At least three dozen of those have since made a full recovery.

The Zika virus was detected in Brazil last year and has since spread across the Americas. It poses a risk to pregnant women because it can cause severe birth defects. It has been linked in Brazil to more than 1,800 cases of microcephaly, a rare birth defect where babies are born with abnormally small heads and brains.

The 56 confirmed cases in Singapore include only one woman.

Taiwan, Australia and South Korea advised pregnant women and those planning pregnancy to postpone trips to Singapore.

Those returning from the country should avoid pregnancy for two months. South Korean travelers will receive text messages with the warning when they arrive in Singapore.

Malaysia and Indonesia, Singapore’s closest neighbors, have stepped up protective measures following the outbreak, introducing thermal scanners at airports and border checkpoints.

Singapore’s Tourism Board said it was monitoring developments, adding the city state remained a “safe travel destination”, and it was premature to consider any impact.

In the meantime, the consumers are not only from Bali, but also (foreign) travelers getting interested in collecting the typical weaving crafts of Tigawasa village.

Lately, the business largely pursued by Tigawasa villagers has started to face a serious problem.

The stock of reed bamboo has been getting rarer because farmers already switched to plant more profitable crops. Crafters should now buy bamboo from outside the region although the quality is not the same as the previous reed bamboo planted by many local residents.

A craftsman who is also sokasi collector, I Wayan Suarjaya, re-

cently admitted that it is increasingly difficult to get reed bamboo.

This condition cannot be avoided because fewer people are remaining to plant it. To fulfill the order, he attempts to look for reed bamboo at his village. However, his efforts do not produce maximal results.

The stock of raw material is minimal, so that it is not enough to meet the needs of the required materials. “Consumers have been familiar with the superior quality of sokasi made at Tigawasa in terms of the bamboo used. At the same time, he can only meet very little genuine bamboo material,” he said.

To meet the need of raw material, Suarjaya and other crafters must bring in reed bamboo from outside the region. However, the quality is not the same as the reed bamboo cultivated at local village.

When processed, the bamboo from outside the region is easily broken, so that he is wasteful of raw materials. Besides, not all the reed bamboos in a large bundle can be processed into the material.

Lately, some residents having been successful outside the region and gained experiences, returned home to open a business such as printing, building materials or business in the culinary field. “We continuously encourage our residents to develop their creativities. They must be able to compete and live a better life through a hard work,” he said.

Within this month, many farmers at Subagan have harvested their rice. After the rice harvest, to anticipate drought as a result of reducing flow of the irrigation water, farmers chose horticultural farming. Some farmers cultivate marigold, corn or chili belonging to hot chili. The chili is cultivated on some hectares of land.

One of the chili farmers met on Monday, Nengah Nurya, was

installing trellis for his hot chili at Desa hamlet, Subagan. Since having no land, he is forced to contract a piece of dry paddy field at Subagan owned by a resident from Asak village.

“We contract a total of 1,000 square meters of land at IDR 1 million per once harvest of chili within approximately six months,” said Nurya.

This modest farmer said that he already tried to cultivate red chili because cultivating melon or watermelon is no longer feasible. Many leaves of melon in the last season looked wrinkles. He does not know what disease has caused it.

Nurya hoped his efforts to cultivate chilies can be successful, so that his hard work will not turn useless, let alone pay quite expensive land contract for farmers like him. “Indeed, the irrigation water is quite alarming. Some days after planted, his chili plants wilted due to drought. Fortunately, at the night two days ago it could get a little water,” he explained. (bud)

In drought, drones help California farmers save every drop

LOS BANOS — A drone whirred to life in a cloud of dust, then shot hundreds of feet skyward for a bird’s-eye view of a vast tomato field in California’s Central Valley, the nation’s most productive farming region.

Equipped with a state-of-the-art thermal camera, the drone crisscrossed the field, scanning it for cool, soggy patches where a gopher may have chewed through the buried drip irrigation line and caused a leak.

In the drought-prone West, where every drop of water counts, California farmers are in a constant search for ways to efficiently use the increasingly scarce resource. Cannon Michael is putting drone technology to work on his fields at Bowles Farming Co. near Los Banos, 120 miles southeast of San Francisco.

About 2,100 companies and individuals have federal permission to fly drones for farming, according to the drone industry’s Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International. Federal regulators Monday relaxed the rules on small, commercial drones, a move that could spur even greater use of such aircraft on farms.

Michael is descended from Henry Miller, a renowned cattle rancher, farmer and Western landowner who helped transform semi-arid central California into fertile farmland 150 years ago by building irrigation canals, some still flowing today.

Six generations later, Michael farms a 17-square-mile portion of that same land, growing melons, carrots, onions, cotton and almonds, while carrying on in the same pioneering spirit as Miller.

“I’ve always been a big fan of technology,” said Michael, 44, mind-

ful of how climate change is making water more precious. “I think it’s really the only way we’re going to stay in business.”

On his 2,400-acre tomato crop alone, Michael estimates that this year his leak-detecting drones could save enough water to sustain more than 550 families of four for a year.

California endured the driest fouryear period on record before a relatively wet and snowy winter this year overflowed some reservoirs in the northern part of the state. Southern California, however, remains dry, and the statewide drought has not ended.

Beyond California, drones are becoming fixtures on farms in places such as Canada, Australia, South Africa and Latin America as they become more affordable and easier to use, said Ian Smith of DroneDeploy, a San Francisco-based industry leader in drone software development.

A farmer can order a commercialgrade drone online for $2,000 and receive it in the mail days later, he said. Its video camera is then paired up with a smartphone or computer tablet that is used to control the drone.

“Hook it up to a smartphone.

Boom. Take off and you’re in business,” Smith said.

Many farmers, however, have yet to grasp the full potential beyond capturing video images of crops or using infrared cameras to spot color variations in the plants that can signal a problem.

Few have used technology and invested in it to the degree Michael has. This year he began using the thermal camera, which can cost up to $10,000 and can show moisture variations in soil. He also created a new management position at his company dedicated to overseeing drones.

Recently, Danny Royer, the new vice president of technology at Bowles, stood at the tailgate of his pickup studying live images transmitted to the screen of his tablet as a drone buzzed 300 feet overhead.

Rows of mature tomato plants appeared on the screen in glowing burnt orange, indicating warmer, drier areas, while dark patches of purple showed the cool moist soil hidden below the plants.

After taking the images back to his office to analyze them, he decided there were no leaks to repair, but the soil needed to be enriched in places to help the field grow evenly.

On Monday, the Federal Aviation Administration eased the rules so that operators of commercial drones that weigh less than 55 pounds will no longer need to go through the long, expensive process of earning an airplane pilot’s license.

Instead, they will have to take a written test — but not an actual flying test at the controls of a plane — and will be issued a drone license for $150.

The rule change and emerging technology could make drones more attractive tools for farmers, said Brandon Stark, director of the University of California’s Center of Excellence for Unmanned Aircraft Systems Safety, based at the Merced campus. (ap)

Offshore wind sails forward, but a different story on land

NORTH SMITHFIELD — Even as Rhode Island makes history as the first U.S. state with an offshore wind farm, its people are not so fond of wind turbines sprouting up on land near where they live.

Dreams of a wind-powered nation sparked by the pioneering Atlantic Ocean project are running aground back on shore, where conventional battles over aesthetics and property values have stymied wind projects here and around the country.

Ruth Pacheco said she didn’t expect so much hostility when she invited a developer to build a giant wind turbine atop a forested hill at her 52-acre family farm in rural North Smithfield.

The 86-year-old proprietor of the Hi-on-a-Hill Herb Farm believes harvesting wind energy is the best way to preserve the land her family has owned and cultivated since the 1840s. But she wasn’t prepared for the dozens of “No Turbine” signs, erected outside nearly every home on the road leading up to her farm.

“We’ve lived here all our lives and seen people come and go,” Pacheco said. “I guess you just can’t take it personally. They’ve got tunnel vision out there.”

Responding to the ire of Pacheco’s neighbors, North Smithfield leaders are now drafting a town-wide ban on wind turbines, though it is too late to affect Pacheco’s project because it already has a permit.

Compared with the five-turbine, 30-megawatt offshore wind farm recently completed in blustery state waters and scheduled to switch on this fall, Rhode Island’s 20 land-based wind turbines are more modest generators of energy, with a combined capacity of about 21 megawatts, enough to power more than 6,000 homes, or a small town about the size of North Smithfield.

They’re becoming familiar landmarks in the nation’s smallest state, visible from major highways and popular beaches, but Rhode Island still ranks near the bottom of the 40 states that produce some wind energy.

U.S. Energy Department records show Texas and California have the most turbines, each with more than 10,000. The two big states vie with smaller windswept plains states in producing the most wind energy. Iowa, Oklahoma, Illinois, Kansas and Minnesota are the leaders.

Unlike those farm states, Rhode Island is tiny and densely populated. And people who like the idea of wind energy in the abstract rarely want it near their own backyards, according to a

2014 study by researchers at the University of Rhode Island that found that the turbines don’t hurt property values.

Pacheco’s neighbors said their concerns include noise, maintenance and “shadow flicker,” the blinking effect that occurs during parts of the year when the sun rises or sets behind the spinning blades. They are also concerned about the height, which at 415 feet — when the blade is pointing up — would be almost as tall as Rhode Island’s tallest building, a 26-story Providence skyscraper.

“To save her farm she’s affecting all of her neighbors,” said Sharon Mayewski, whose 17-acre lot abuts Pacheco’s.

Mayewski is president of a new group called COURT, or Conserve Our Unique Rural Town, that was formed to halt the turbine project.

On a recent visit to Pacheco’s farm, a wild turkey strolled beneath a mulberry tree as the proprietor and her two daughters showed off the property where they all grew up and still live in three adjacent houses.

Cattle once roamed its pastures, but the farm is now focused on herbs, dried everlastings, chickens, beehives and educational programs. The family has also worked with the government to plant native grasses and wildflowers and tend the property’s expansive woodland as part of a decade-long forestry management project.

None of the agricultural harvest can match the $54,000 annually promised by a 25-year lease agreement Pacheco signed with Wind Energy Development, the North Kingstown company that has installed many of the wind turbines in the state.

“It will ensure that the girls can maintain the land for future generations,” Pacheco said. “We may not be here, but we hope the footprint will be here for someone to enjoy.”

Town Councilwoman Roseanne Nadeau said she sympathizes with Pacheco but opposes wind turbines in the town. The town last year rejected the same developer’s proposal for wind turbines on municipal land behind a big-box shopping center, not far from Pacheco’s property.

Nadeau, a former real estate appraiser, doesn’t believe most of the arguments that neighbors have made against the turbine, from concerns about property values to health worries. Instead, she points to maps that show her town, near the Massachusetts border and far from the ocean, just isn’t very windy. (ap)

The pig breeders at local households usually do it more carefully and sensitively to the condition of their livestock. The data indicate the number of pigs raised traditionally is more than those bred in the colony.

At rural area, each family at lease raises two pigs.

In addition, the pig population in Jembrana also increased more than other livestock. The latest data recorded 65,000 pigs, more than the cattle population reaching 51,000 heads, while goat only amounts to 7,000 heads.

Faster raising time than any other animals becomes one of the reasons causing many residents to breed it.

According to him, the current price of pork is likely to fluctuate. The species of pig mostly raised by people, according to him, is landrace, while local saddleback pig increasingly declined.

Related to the availability of pork, the Head of the Jembrana Trade and Cooperation Agency, I Made Sudantra, expressed that higher demand is the pork directly slaughtered by residents. “Buleleng harbor was then moved to Celukan Bawang in 1971, so that Buleleng faded as a harbor city. Surely the source of economic activities was the harbor and the loading and unloading activities are

SVF draws 100,000 visitors, transaction reaches IDR 16.5 billion

DENPASAR - Transaction during the five days of the Sanur Village Festival (SVF) 2016 increased 10 percent when compared to the festival last year. In the meantime, the number of visitors soared from 80,000 people last year to approximately 100,000 people.

SVF General Coordinator, Ida Bagus Wisnu Diwangkara, said that the highest visit occurred on weekends or Saturday night (Aug. 27) when the event was graced by the performance of singer Sandhy Sondoro and on Sunday night by Glen Fredly.

“The visit did only occur at night, but has also taken place from the morning, afternoon, until late afternoon and scattered in various places of the event. This festival is the peak of the crowds throughout the implementation of festival for 11 years,” said Gus Wisnu, Monday (Aug. 29).

Gus Wisnu expressed his apologies for the inconvenience may have been caused to traffic during the festival implementation. When reading the report at the closing ceremony, he said the annual festival was responded enthusiastically by the public that flocked to the location at the Maissonettee area of the Inna Grand Bali Beach Sanur and several other locations such as the kite festival, regatta boat race, beach games, tennis, golf, marathon, cultural parade and chirping bird contest.

He stated that the transaction showed an increase of approximately 10 percent from IDR 15 billion last year to around

IDR16.5 billion. Most revenue was obtained from culinary stand or food bazaar where this year amounted to 55 booths representing hotels, cafes and restaurants at Sanur and surrounding areas.

Through the years, residents want to enrich their culinary experience while enjoying entertainment on the main stage of the festival.

Other transactions, added Gus Wisnu, occurred in the 25 SVF bazaar booths and 50 booths of the Sanur Creative Expo. All the 75 booths are filled in by participants from Bali and the Indonesian region offering a variety of the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) products such as fashion knick-knack, accessories, flowers, fruit nursery transplant and a variety of other necessities.

“From the beginning, the SVF has indeed involved the MSMEs with the power to stimulate people’s economy,” he said.

JERUSALEM — Palestinian authorities are silencing dissent by cracking down on free speech and abusing local journalists and activists critical of their policies, a leading international human rights group said Tuesday.

In 2016, positive rabies cases decline in Tabanan

TABANAN - Rabies positive bite case in Tabanan has decreased in 2016. In 2015, the rabies bite was recorded to reach 55 cases, while in 2016 is recorded to amount 22 cases. Although it shows a decline, the existence of positive cases in dogs becomes a note and tasks of the Livestock Agency to handle. Though the mass vaccination program is always held every year, there are still dogs getting no vaccination.

The Head of the Tabanan Livestock Agency, Wayan Kotio, said on Monday (Aug. 29) that from the information compiled the presence of rabies positive case in Tabanan happened because there are still dogs, especially in mountainous regions such as Pupuan, remaining to get no vaccination due to difficult terrain. Human Rights Watch said both the Western-backed Palestinian Authority led by President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank and its rival, the ruling Islamic militant group Hamas in the Gaza Strip, are “arresting, abusing, and criminally charging journalists and activists who express peaceful criticism of the authorities.”

In 2007, Hamas ousted Abbas’ Fatah forces from Gaza in bloody street battles, leaving the Palestinians divided between two governments. Attempts at reconciliation have repeatedly failed, and both Hamas and the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority have periodically launched crackdowns against their rivals in efforts to consolidate power.

“The Palestinian governments in both Gaza and the West Bank are arresting and even physically abusing activists and journalists who express criticism on important public issues,” said Sari Bashi, the Israel and Palestine country director at Human Rights Watch.

HRW said that in the West Bank, Palestinian forces arrested activists and musicians who “ridiculed Palestinian security forces” and “accused the government of corruption” in statements posted on Facebook or stated in graffiti and rap songs.

In Gaza, the rights group said an activist who criticized Hamas

for “failing to protect a man with a mental disability” was detained and intimidated by the group, as was a journalist who “posted a photograph of a woman looking for food in a garbage bin.”

The New York-based rights group said that in the incidents of abuse, “activists and journalists said that security officers beat or kicked them, deprived them of sleep and proper food, hosed them with cold and then hot water, and made them maintain uncomfortable positions for long hours.”

Tarik Abu Zaid, a journalist with the Hamas-allied al-Aqsa TV station, said he has been arrested by the Palestinian Authority three times, most recently in March, and held for a month each time.

“For the first week, the investigation was friendly,” he said.

“But by the end of the first week, they started using several ways of physical and psychological torture to make me confess to charges that I didn’t do.” He said he was forced to stand and prevented from sleeping for three days and beaten in the genitals by an interrogator.

Jamal Dajani, spokesman for the West Bank government, said any such incidents were “isolated” and did not reflect official government policy. He said in some cases, journalists were arrested under defamation laws.

A Newspoll published in The Australian newspaper on Tuesday showed that Turnbull’s popularity had sunk to its lowest point since he ousted the polarizing Tony Ab-

bott as prime minister a year ago in a ballot of lawmakers in the ruling Liberal Party.

Although more respondents prefer Turnbull as prime minister than they would opposition leader Bill Shorten, Turnbull’s lead — 43 percent to 32 percent — is the narrowest since he took the top job.

The government remained neck and neck with the center-left Labor Party with 50 percent support for each. The government won a second three-year term with 50.4 percent of the vote.

The poll was a national weekend survey of 1,696 voters. It had a 2.4 percentage point margin of

error.

The government has said that its priority would be to reign in the national deficit, but that task has been made difficult by its reduced majority in the House of Representatives and the fact it has only a minority in the Senate.

At an Aboriginal welcoming ceremony at Parliament House early Tuesday, Turnbull called for a new era of political cooperation.

China financial stocks rebound but indexes struggle; HK edges up

SHANGHAI - China banking shares rebounded on Tuesday, shaking off generally weak earnings reports and concerns about bad loans, but selling in transportation stocks left major indexes little changed.

China’s markets have struggled to make headway amid growing perceptions that the central bank is in no hurry to ease policy soon, for fear of adding to already high debt levels and stoking asset bubbles.

Policymakers have shifted their focus to ramping up fiscal spending instead, but shares of firms which stand to benefit most from an infrastructure building spree have been unable to gain much traction, either.

The blue-chip CSI300 index rose 0.1 percent to 3,311.93 points by the lunch break, while the Shanghai Composite Index was unchanged at 3,071.36 points.

is at serious risk of falling below 6.5 percent, policymakers do not see the need to reduce interest rates or bank’ reserve requirement ratio (RRR) again, policy advisers told Reuters, citing evidence that companies and banks are hoarding cash, instead of investing in the real economy.

Banking shares rebounded on Tuesday despite generally eroding profit margins and mounting bad loans in the latest earnings reports from the sector. While conditions are weakening, traders said investors were relieved that interim results did not point to a rapid deterioration in asset quality as many had feared.

China Southern Airlines’ Shanghai-listed shares dropped nearly 3 percent, while its Hong Kongtraded stock slumped over 6 percent, after the carrier reported a 11 percent drop in first-half profit.

In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index added 0.8 percent to 23,003.44 points as traders grew sceptical that the U.S. central bank would raise rates as soon as next month, while the Hong Kong China Enterprises Index gained 0.9 percent to 9,578.20.(ap)

Jokowi discusses issues to be brought to G20 Summit in China

European Commission says ‘ball still rolling’ on trade deal with U.S. Sigmar Gabriel of Germany, the EU’s biggest economy, said on Sunday that negotiations over the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) had failed because Europe rejected some U.S. demands.

Asked to comment on Gabriel’s remarks, a European Commission spokesman said: “The ball is still rolling” on TTIP. “Although trade talks take time, the ball is rolling right now and the Commission is making steady progress in the ongoing TTIP negotiations,” Margaritis Schinas told a news conference.

The White House also disputed Gabriel’s contention, saying it was still aiming to reach a deal by the end of the year. “It’s going to require the resolution of some pretty thorny negotiations, but the president and his team are committed to doing that,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters in Washington.

Less haze this year, Indonesia promises

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s Disaster Agency said it is confident the country’s forest fires and haze of toxic smoke they send over Southeast Asia are unlikely to reach levels seen in 2015 because of favourable weather conditions and a quicker emergency response.

Last year’s fires were among of the worst on record, straining relations between Indonesia and its neighbours, and costing the country at least $16 billion in economic losses, equivalent to 1.9 percent of its gross domestic product, according to the World Bank.

“We are certain this year things will be better,” agency spokesman Sutopo Nugroho told reporters on Monday, referring to a 61 percent reduction in hotspots seen 2016 compared with a year ago.

Six Indonesian provinces have declared a state of emergency, allowing the agency to respond more quickly than last year, Nugroho said.

“In 2015, only three provinces declared a state of emergency and even that was too late. The forest and land fires had already spread,” he said.

Home to the world’s third-largest area of tropical forests, Indonesia

has been criticised by green activists and by neighbouring Southeast Asian nations for failing to stop the region’s annual haze, largely caused by forest-clearing for palm and pulp plantations.

The pollution in 2015 cost Southeast Asia economic powerhouse Singapore S$700 million ($517 million), the country’s environment and water resources minister said in March.

An unusually wet dry season linked to the La Nina weather phenomenon this year has helped stop fires from spreading, Nugroho said.

Based on weather forecasts the dry season will peak in September and end in October, Nugroho said. “So for that one month we will really keep everything under control,” he said.

Singapore on Monday got a break from the haze that hit the island state last week, as shifting winds pushed

the smoke from Indonesia’s Sumatra island northward over Malaysia.

There, air quality in Kuala Lumpur neared “unhealthy” levels and residents took to social media to complain about poor visibility and an acrid smell.

Despite Indonesian President Joko Widodo’s instructions to end the annual blight “the sooner the better”, the problem won’t go away without an imporovement of preventative measures, Nugroho said.

“There is no way we can completely eliminate or end the forest and land fires in Indonesia, because they are very much linked to behaviours of communities that light fires,” he said, referring to farmers who use fires to prepare land for crops and clear it for plantations. “There are still fires, so prevention needs to be improved.”

According to the World Bank, about 35 percent of the Indonesian workforce is employed in agriculture, with palm oil and pulp-and-paper industries key contributors. Palm oil is a major growth driver for Indonesia, the world’s biggest producer of the edible oil.(rtr)

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) discussed with a number of his ministers issues to be brought to the G20 summit conference to be held next week in Hangzhou, in the Chinese province of Zhejiang.

The ministers taking part in the discussion included Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, Coordinating Minister for Law, Security and Political Affairs Wirant, Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Natural Resources Luhut Binsar Panjaitan, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati and Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita.

The president, who will arrive in Hangzhou on Sept. 2 morning, would have a number of no less important agenda in China other than attending the G20 summit meeting, Retno said after the discussion.

She said the Indonesian President would have his first bilateral meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sept 2 ahead of the G20 summit. The two heads of state would discuss not only economic issue but also other regional and international issues as China has become one of Indonesias important partners.

On Sept 3 Jokowi would address a business forum expected to be attended by 600-700 Chinese business leaders and a luncheon meeting with leaders of selected Chinese state companies. After that the president will meet Indonesian community in China as he normally does when he visited a foreign country, Retno said.

“In Sept 4-5, the president would spend his whole time in the G20 summit,” she said. The summit meeting will last in five sessions and Jokowi will deliver his speech in the second session. His speech in non economic material will focus on the war against terrorism.

The Group of 20 countries represents two third of the world population and 85 percent of the worlds gross domestic product and dominates 75 percent of the world trade.

Olympic medalist Liliyana natsir welcomed with parade in Manado MANADO - Badminton Olympic gold medalist Liliyana Natsir was given a heros welcome in her home town of Manado in North Sulawesi on Monday. She was paraded across the city upon her arrival at the local Ratulangi airport at 2pm aboard a Batik Air plane from Jakarta where a lot of people had been waiting for her for a long time.

Lilyana Natsir won the only gold medal for the country along with Tantowi Achmad from a badminton mixed doubles event in the recent Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Several members of the regional board of the Indonesian Badminton Association and regional administration were among those who welcomed her. These included the chief of the PBSI North Sulawesi chapter, Jendry Keintjem, secretary of the regional administration, Rachmat Mokodongan and head of the regional sports affairs, Mecky Onibala.

Lilayana was taken around in a parade along several of the city’s main streets, including Walanda Maramis, Martadinata and Lumintut streets, from the airport. Along the way, community members welcomed her with many shouting her name. Mecky Onibala said he was proud of her achievement which he termed extraordinary.

Brazil’s president proclaims innocence at impeachment trial

BRASILIA — In a 14-hour session that was less electric than expected, Brazil’s suspended president proclaimed her innocence at her impeachment trial Monday, branding her vice president a “usurper,” calling the drive to oust her a “coup” and warning senators that history will judge them harshly if they oust a democratically elected leader on false charges.

Dilma Rousseff’s much anticipated appearance before senators who will decide as early as Tuesday whether to permanently remove her from office was characterized by the same defiance she has shown throughout an impeachment process that has divided Latin America’s most populous nation. But it was also more civil than the three previous impeachment trial sessions, when lawmakers from both sides got into heated exchanges.

“I know I will be judged, but my conscience is clear. I did not commit a crime,” Rousseff told senators who listened intently, in contrast to the chamber’s usual raucousness.

She also pleaded with all 81 senators to keep her on the job in her closing remarks. “I need all of you, regardless of political parties,” she said. The response of the lawmakers was tepid.

In the middle of her second term, the left-leaning leader has been accused of breaking fiscal rules in 2015 to hide problems in the federal budget.

She has denied any wrongdoing.

Rousseff reminded those in attendance that she was re-elected in 2014 with more than 54 million votes, asserting that at every moment since she has followed the constitution and sought to do what was best for Brazil.

Brazil’s first female president is a former guerrilla fighter who was

jailed and tortured during the country’s dictatorship, and Rousseff drew a connection between her past and the situation today. “I can’t help but taste the bitterness of injustice,” she said.

During her 30-minute opening speech, Rousseff argued that in early 2015 opposition lawmakers began creating a climate of instability by refusing to negotiate and throwing what she called “fiscal bombs” in the face of the government’s declining revenues as the once booming economy continued its slump.

She said the impeachment process had exacerbated the recession in Latin America’s largest economy, and she blamed the opposition, which has argued that she has to be removed for the financial climate to improve.

Rousseff blasted interim President Michel Temer as a “usurper.”

Her vice president turned archenemy, Temer took over when the Senate voted in May to impeach and suspend Rousseff for up to 180 days while a trial was prepared. He will serve out Rousseff’s term until December 2018 if she is removed, but still faces risks of having his mandate cancelled at Brazil’s top electoral court.

Referring to Temer, Rousseff said Brazilians would never have elected a man who named a Cabinet of all white men in a country that is more than 50 percent non-white. The Cabinet that

Temer put in place has been roundly criticized for its lack of diversity, and three of his ministers were forced to step down within a month of taking office because of corruption allegations.

Rousseff asserted she paid a price for refusing to quash a wide-ranging police investigation into the state oil company Petrobras, saying corrupt lawmakers conspired to oust her to derail the investigation into billions in kickbacks at the oil giant.

The investigation has led to the jailing of top businessmen and politicians, including in her Workers’ Party.

But they have plenty of company: Watchdog groups estimate 60 percent of the 594 lawmakers in both chambers are being investigated for wrongdoing, many for corruption related to the Petrobras probe.

Rousseff said it was “an irony of history” that she would be judged for crimes she did not commit, by people who were accused of serious crimes.

“I ask that you be just with an honest president,” she said, her voice cracking with emotion. Her voice also changed when she made a reference to “the betrayal, the verbal insults and the violence of the prejudice” that she says she has endured.

Watching the proceedings, Rousseff’s mentor and predecessor as president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who is himself under investigation and will later this year stand trial for alleged obstruction of justice in the Petrobras probe, said his protegee “said what she had to say.”

WELLINGTON — How do you steal 500 cows? Probably not all at once. That’s according to New Zealand police, who said Tuesday that they were investigating reports of the unlikely crime at a South Island farm.

Locals said they’d never before heard of cattle rustling on such a massive scale. And that’s in a nation that’s home to some 10 million cows, more than double the number of people.

The farmer involved is feeling too sheepish to talk about what happened, according to friend Willy Leferink.

“He’s absolutely gobsmacked, and deeply embarrassed,” Leferink said.

“If you had three-quarters of a million dollars go missing, you wouldn’t want to talk about it either.”

NEW YORK — Serena Williams hadn’t played much coming into the Grand Slam tournament. An injury hampered her preparation, and she served miserably in the match.

That was the story in the fourth round of the 2012 Australian Open, when a young Russian lefty named Ekaterina Makarova stunned Williams in straight sets. The victory fueled Makarova’s surge up the rankings, and by the 2014 U.S. Open, she was in the top 20 and facing the American in the semifinals.

That day is a much more pleasant memory for Williams — a 6-1, 6-3 win that was part of a dominant run to the title. It’s the kind of form she’s hoping to regain as she begins her bid for a record 23rd major title.

But Williams has played just three singles matches since Wimbledon, hindered by a right shoulder injury. In her last outing, a thirdround loss to Elina Svitolina in the Olympics, her serve deserted her much as it did against Makarova in Melbourne 4 1/2 years ago.

RIO DE JANEIRO — A Brazilian judge ordered on Monday the release of a high-ranking IOC member who was arrested during the Rio de Janeiro Games in a ticket-scalping probe.

Judge Fernando Antonio de Almeida accepted a request made by Patrick Hickey’s lawyers to set him free from Rio’s Bangu prison complex, where he has been held since Aug. 19, while his case continues to be investigated. Hickey must remain in Brazil and hand over his passport.

“I don’t see how his freedom could bring any obstacles or present a risk to the public, the criminal investigation or the prosecution,” said Almeida, as he overturned a previous court decision that denied Hickey’s release.

Police have said the 71-year-old Irish-

man plotted with businessmen to transfer tickets illegally to a vendor who was not authorized to sell them. They want prosecutors to start a judicial process against Hickey for alleged ticket scalping, conspiracy and ambush marketing.

The Olympic Council of Ireland said earlier this month that Hickey decided to “step aside temporarily” as an IOC member and from all his other Olympic positions “until this matter is fully resolved.” Hickey is also president of the OCI, head of the European Olympic Committees and vice president of the Association of National Olympic Committees.

The order for Hickey’s release comes two days after an Irish businessman also investigated in the alleged scheme was let go on bail from the same prison.(ap)

NAPLES — Napoli has signed Croatia midfielder Marko Rog on loan from Dinamo Zagreb. Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis tweeted Monday that Rog is “a signing which enhances a midfield which is now among the most complete possible.”

England’s first-choice keeper has been left out of City’s opening three Premier League matches of the season and new manager Pep Guardiola has said that Hart can leave if he wants.

Guardiola is determined to start moves at the back with a goalkeeper who is “able to play with

NEW YORK — Serena Williams hadn’t played much coming into the Grand Slam tournament. An injury hampered her preparation, and she served miserably in the match.

That was the story in the fourth round of the 2012 Australian Open, when a young Russian lefty named Ekaterina Makarova stunned Williams in straight sets. The victory fueled Makarova’s surge up the rankings, and by the 2014 U.S. Open, she was in the top 20 and facing the American in the semifinals.

That day is a much more pleasant memory for Williams — a 6-1, 6-3 win that was part of a dominant run to the title. It’s the kind of form she’s hoping to regain as she begins her bid for a record 23rd major title.

But Williams has played just three singles matches since Wimbledon, hindered by a right shoulder injury. In her last outing, a thirdround loss to Elina Svitolina in the Olympics, her serve deserted her much as it did against Makarova in Melbourne 4 1/2 years ago.

RIO DE JANEIRO — A Brazilian judge ordered on Monday the release of a high-ranking IOC member who was arrested during the Rio de Janeiro Games in a ticket-scalping probe.

Judge Fernando Antonio de Almeida accepted a request made by Patrick Hickey’s lawyers to set him free from Rio’s Bangu prison complex, where he has been held since Aug. 19, while his case continues to be investigated. Hickey must remain in Brazil and hand over his passport.

“I don’t see how his freedom could bring any obstacles or present a risk to the public, the criminal investigation or the prosecution,” said Almeida, as he overturned a previous court decision that denied Hickey’s release.

Police have said the 71-year-old Irish-

man plotted with businessmen to transfer tickets illegally to a vendor who was not authorized to sell them. They want prosecutors to start a judicial process against Hickey for alleged ticket scalping, conspiracy and ambush marketing.

The Olympic Council of Ireland said earlier this month that Hickey decided to “step aside temporarily” as an IOC member and from all his other Olympic positions “until this matter is fully resolved.” Hickey is also president of the OCI, head of the European Olympic Committees and vice president of the Association of National Olympic Committees.

The order for Hickey’s release comes two days after an Irish businessman also investigated in the alleged scheme was let go on bail from the same prison.(ap)

Brazil’s president proclaims innocence at impeachment trial

BRASILIA — In a 14-hour session that was less electric than expected, Brazil’s suspended president proclaimed her innocence at her impeachment trial Monday, branding her vice president a “usurper,” calling the drive to oust her a “coup” and warning senators that history will judge them harshly if they oust a democratically elected leader on false charges.

Dilma Rousseff’s much anticipated appearance before senators who will decide as early as Tuesday whether to permanently remove her from office was characterized by the same defiance she has shown throughout an impeachment process that has divided Latin America’s most populous nation. But it was also more civil than the three previous impeachment trial sessions, when lawmakers from both sides got into heated exchanges.

“I know I will be judged, but my conscience is clear. I did not commit a crime,” Rousseff told senators who listened intently, in contrast to the chamber’s usual raucousness.

She also pleaded with all 81 senators to keep her on the job in her closing remarks. “I need all of you, regardless of political parties,” she said. The response of the lawmakers was tepid.

In the middle of her second term, the left-leaning leader has been accused of breaking fiscal rules in 2015 to hide problems in the federal budget.

She has denied any wrongdoing.

Rousseff reminded those in attendance that she was re-elected in 2014 with more than 54 million votes, asserting that at every moment since she has followed the constitution and sought to do what was best for Brazil.

Brazil’s first female president is a former guerrilla fighter who was

jailed and tortured during the country’s dictatorship, and Rousseff drew a connection between her past and the situation today. “I can’t help but taste the bitterness of injustice,” she said.

During her 30-minute opening speech, Rousseff argued that in early 2015 opposition lawmakers began creating a climate of instability by refusing to negotiate and throwing what she called “fiscal bombs” in the face of the government’s declining revenues as the once booming economy continued its slump.

She said the impeachment process had exacerbated the recession in Latin America’s largest economy, and she blamed the opposition, which has argued that she has to be removed for the financial climate to improve.

Rousseff blasted interim President Michel Temer as a “usurper.”

Her vice president turned archenemy, Temer took over when the Senate voted in May to impeach and suspend Rousseff for up to 180 days while a trial was prepared. He will serve out Rousseff’s term until December 2018 if she is removed, but still faces risks of having his mandate cancelled at Brazil’s top electoral court.

Referring to Temer, Rousseff said Brazilians would never have elected a man who named a Cabinet of all white men in a country that is more than 50 percent non-white. The Cabinet that

Temer put in place has been roundly criticized for its lack of diversity, and three of his ministers were forced to step down within a month of taking office because of corruption allegations.

Rousseff asserted she paid a price for refusing to quash a wide-ranging police investigation into the state oil company Petrobras, saying corrupt lawmakers conspired to oust her to derail the investigation into billions in kickbacks at the oil giant.

The investigation has led to the jailing of top businessmen and politicians, including in her Workers’ Party.

But they have plenty of company: Watchdog groups estimate 60 percent of the 594 lawmakers in both chambers are being investigated for wrongdoing, many for corruption related to the Petrobras probe.

Rousseff said it was “an irony of history” that she would be judged for crimes she did not commit, by people who were accused of serious crimes.

“I ask that you be just with an honest president,” she said, her voice cracking with emotion. Her voice also changed when she made a reference to “the betrayal, the verbal insults and the violence of the prejudice” that she says she has endured.

Watching the proceedings, Rousseff’s mentor and predecessor as president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who is himself under investigation and will later this year stand trial for alleged obstruction of justice in the Petrobras probe, said his protegee “said what she had to say.”

WELLINGTON — How do you steal 500 cows? Probably not all at once. That’s according to New Zealand police, who said Tuesday that they were investigating reports of the unlikely crime at a South Island farm.

Locals said they’d never before heard of cattle rustling on such a massive scale. And that’s in a nation that’s home to some 10 million cows, more than double the number of people.

The farmer involved is feeling too sheepish to talk about what happened, according to friend Willy Leferink.

“He’s absolutely gobsmacked, and deeply embarrassed,” Leferink said.

“If you had three-quarters of a million dollars go missing, you wouldn’t want to talk about it either.”

SHANGHAI - China banking shares rebounded on Tuesday, shaking off generally weak earnings reports and concerns about bad loans, but selling in transportation stocks left major indexes little changed.

Asked to comment on Gabriel’s remarks, a European Commission spokesman said: “The ball is still rolling” on TTIP. “Although trade talks take time, the ball is rolling right now and the Commission is making steady progress in the ongoing TTIP negotiations,” Margaritis Schinas told a news conference.

The White House also disputed Gabriel’s contention, saying it was still aiming to reach a deal by the end of the year. “It’s going to require the resolution of some pretty thorny negotiations, but the president and his team are committed to doing that,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters in Washington.

Less haze this year, Indonesia promises

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s Disaster Agency said it is confident the country’s forest fires and haze of toxic smoke they send over Southeast Asia are unlikely to reach levels seen in 2015 because of favourable weather conditions and a quicker emergency response.

Last year’s fires were among of the worst on record, straining relations between Indonesia and its neighbours, and costing the country at least $16 billion in economic losses, equivalent to 1.9 percent of its gross domestic product, according to the World Bank.

“We are certain this year things will be better,” agency spokesman Sutopo Nugroho told reporters on Monday, referring to a 61 percent reduction in hotspots seen 2016 compared with a year ago.

Six Indonesian provinces have declared a state of emergency, allowing the agency to respond more quickly than last year, Nugroho said.

“In 2015, only three provinces declared a state of emergency and even that was too late. The forest and land fires had already spread,” he said.

Home to the world’s third-largest area of tropical forests, Indonesia

has been criticised by green activists and by neighbouring Southeast Asian nations for failing to stop the region’s annual haze, largely caused by forest-clearing for palm and pulp plantations.

The pollution in 2015 cost Southeast Asia economic powerhouse Singapore S$700 million ($517 million), the country’s environment and water resources minister said in March.

An unusually wet dry season linked to the La Nina weather phenomenon this year has helped stop fires from spreading, Nugroho said.

Based on weather forecasts the dry season will peak in September and end in October, Nugroho said. “So for that one month we will really keep everything under control,” he said.

Singapore on Monday got a break from the haze that hit the island state last week, as shifting winds pushed

the smoke from Indonesia’s Sumatra island northward over Malaysia.

There, air quality in Kuala Lumpur neared “unhealthy” levels and residents took to social media to complain about poor visibility and an acrid smell.

Despite Indonesian President Joko Widodo’s instructions to end the annual blight “the sooner the better”, the problem won’t go away without an imporovement of preventative measures, Nugroho said.

“There is no way we can completely eliminate or end the forest and land fires in Indonesia, because they are very much linked to behaviours of communities that light fires,” he said, referring to farmers who use fires to prepare land for crops and clear it for plantations. “There are still fires, so prevention needs to be improved.”

According to the World Bank, about 35 percent of the Indonesian workforce is employed in agriculture, with palm oil and pulp-and-paper industries key contributors. Palm oil is a major growth driver for Indonesia, the world’s biggest producer of the edible oil.(rtr)

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) discussed with a number of his ministers issues to be brought to the G20 summit conference to be held next week in Hangzhou, in the Chinese province of Zhejiang.

The ministers taking part in the discussion included Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, Coordinating Minister for Law, Security and Political Affairs Wirant, Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Natural Resources Luhut Binsar Panjaitan, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati and Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita.

The president, who will arrive in Hangzhou on Sept. 2 morning, would have a number of no less important agenda in China other than attending the G20 summit meeting, Retno said after the discussion.

She said the Indonesian President would have his first bilateral meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sept 2 ahead of the G20 summit. The two heads of state would discuss not only economic issue but also other regional and international issues as China has become one of Indonesias important partners.

On Sept 3 Jokowi would address a business forum expected to be attended by 600-700 Chinese business leaders and a luncheon meeting with leaders of selected Chinese state companies. After that the president will meet Indonesian community in China as he normally does when he visited a foreign country, Retno said.

“In Sept 4-5, the president would spend his whole time in the G20 summit,” she said. The summit meeting will last in five sessions and Jokowi will deliver his speech in the second session. His speech in non economic material will focus on the war against terrorism.

The Group of 20 countries represents two third of the world population and 85 percent of the worlds gross domestic product and dominates 75 percent of the world trade.

Indonesia, the worlds 16th largest economy, joined the group in 2009 and has been active in taking part in the annual forum. (ant)

Olympic medalist Liliyana natsir welcomed with parade in Manado MANADO - Badminton Olympic gold medalist Liliyana Natsir was given a heros welcome in her home town of Manado in North Sulawesi on Monday. She was paraded across the city upon her arrival at the local Ratulangi airport at 2pm aboard a Batik Air plane from Jakarta where a lot of people had been waiting for her for a long time.

Lilyana Natsir won the only gold medal for the country along with Tantowi Achmad from a badminton mixed doubles event in the recent Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Several members of the regional board of the Indonesian Badminton Association and regional administration were among those who welcomed her. These included the chief of the PBSI North Sulawesi chapter, Jendry Keintjem, secretary of the regional administration, Rachmat Mokodongan and head of the regional sports affairs, Mecky Onibala.

Lilayana was taken around in a parade along several of the city’s main streets, including Walanda Maramis, Martadinata and Lumintut streets, from the airport. Along the way, community members welcomed her with many shouting her name. Mecky Onibala said he was proud of her achievement which he termed extraordinary.

SVF draws 100,000 visitors, transaction reaches IDR 16.5 billion

DENPASAR - Transaction during the five days of the Sanur Village Festival (SVF) 2016 increased 10 percent when compared to the festival last year. In the meantime, the number of visitors soared from 80,000 people last year to approximately 100,000 people.

SVF General Coordinator, Ida Bagus Wisnu Diwangkara, said that the highest visit occurred on weekends or Saturday night (Aug. 27) when the event was graced by the performance of singer Sandhy Sondoro and on Sunday night by Glen Fredly.

“The visit did only occur at night, but has also taken place from the morning, afternoon, until late afternoon and scattered in various places of the event. This festival is the peak of the crowds throughout the implementation of festival for 11 years,” said Gus Wisnu, Monday (Aug. 29).

Gus Wisnu expressed his apologies for the inconvenience may have been caused to traffic during the festival implementation. When reading the report at the closing ceremony, he said the annual festival was responded enthusiastically by the public that flocked to the location at the Maissonettee area of the Inna Grand Bali Beach Sanur and several other locations such as the kite festival, regatta boat race, beach games, tennis, golf, marathon, cultural parade and chirping bird contest.

He stated that the transaction showed an increase of approximately 10 percent from IDR 15 billion last year to around

Other transactions, added Gus Wisnu, occurred in the 25 SVF bazaar booths and 50 booths of the Sanur Creative Expo. All the 75 booths are filled in by participants from Bali and the Indonesian region offering a variety of the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) products such as fashion knick-knack, accessories, flowers, fruit nursery transplant and a variety of other necessities.

“From the beginning, the SVF has indeed involved the MSMEs with the power to stimulate people’s economy,” he said.

In 2016, positive rabies cases decline in Tabanan

TABANAN - Rabies positive bite case in Tabanan has decreased in 2016. In 2015, the rabies bite was recorded to reach 55 cases, while in 2016 is recorded to amount 22 cases. Although it shows a decline, the existence of positive cases in dogs becomes a note and tasks of the Livestock Agency to handle. Though the mass vaccination program is always held every year, there are still dogs getting no vaccination.

However, the positive case in urban areas happened due to the entry of unvaccinated new dogs.

Human Rights Watch said both the Western-backed Palestinian Authority led by President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank and its rival, the ruling Islamic militant group Hamas in the Gaza Strip, are “arresting, abusing, and criminally charging journalists and activists who express peaceful criticism of the authorities.”

In 2007, Hamas ousted Abbas’ Fatah forces from Gaza in bloody street battles, leaving the Palestinians divided between two governments. Attempts at reconciliation have repeatedly failed, and both Hamas and the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority have periodically launched crackdowns against their rivals in efforts to consolidate power.

“The Palestinian governments in both Gaza and the West Bank are arresting and even physically abusing activists and journalists who express criticism on important public issues,” said Sari Bashi, the Israel and Palestine country director at Human Rights Watch.

HRW said that in the West Bank, Palestinian forces arrested activists and musicians who “ridiculed Palestinian security forces” and “accused the government of corruption” in statements posted on Facebook or stated in graffiti and rap songs.

In Gaza, the rights group said an activist who criticized Hamas

for “failing to protect a man with a mental disability” was detained and intimidated by the group, as was a journalist who “posted a photograph of a woman looking for food in a garbage bin.”

The New York-based rights group said that in the incidents of abuse, “activists and journalists said that security officers beat or kicked them, deprived them of sleep and proper food, hosed them with cold and then hot water, and made them maintain uncomfortable positions for long hours.”

Tarik Abu Zaid, a journalist with the Hamas-allied al-Aqsa TV station, said he has been arrested by the Palestinian Authority three times, most recently in March, and held for a month each time.

“For the first week, the investigation was friendly,” he said.

“But by the end of the first week, they started using several ways of physical and psychological torture to make me confess to charges that I didn’t do.” He said he was forced to stand and prevented from sleeping for three days and beaten in the genitals by an interrogator.

Jamal Dajani, spokesman for the West Bank government, said any such incidents were “isolated” and did not reflect official government policy. He said in some cases, journalists were arrested under defamation laws.

CANBERRA — Australia’s Parliament met Tuesday for the first time since the conservative government narrowly won an election almost two months ago and as an opinion poll showed Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s popularity falling.

Lawmakers were sworn in after the election on July 2 left Turnbull’s coalition with 76 seats in the 150-seat House of Representatives.

A Newspoll published in The Australian newspaper on Tuesday showed that Turnbull’s popularity had sunk to its lowest point since he ousted the polarizing Tony Ab-

bott as prime minister a year ago in a ballot of lawmakers in the ruling Liberal Party.

Although more respondents prefer Turnbull as prime minister than they would opposition leader Bill Shorten, Turnbull’s lead — 43 percent to 32 percent — is the narrowest since he took the top job.

The government remained neck and neck with the center-left Labor Party with 50 percent support for each. The government won a second three-year term with 50.4 percent of the vote.

The poll was a national weekend survey of 1,696 voters. It had a 2.4 percentage point margin of

error.

The government has said that its priority would be to reign in the national deficit, but that task has been made difficult by its reduced majority in the House of Representatives and the fact it has only a minority in the Senate.

At an Aboriginal welcoming ceremony at Parliament House early Tuesday, Turnbull called for a new era of political cooperation.

“So let us continue the 45th Parliament in the way we begin it today — with mutual respect, goodwill and a shared commitment to advance Australia and all Australians,” Turnbull said.(ap)

In drought, drones help California farmers save every drop

LOS BANOS — A drone whirred to life in a cloud of dust, then shot hundreds of feet skyward for a bird’s-eye view of a vast tomato field in California’s Central Valley, the nation’s most productive farming region.

Equipped with a state-of-the-art thermal camera, the drone crisscrossed the field, scanning it for cool, soggy patches where a gopher may have chewed through the buried drip irrigation line and caused a leak.

In the drought-prone West, where every drop of water counts, California farmers are in a constant search for ways to efficiently use the increasingly scarce resource. Cannon Michael is putting drone technology to work on his fields at Bowles Farming Co. near Los Banos, 120 miles southeast of San Francisco.

About 2,100 companies and individuals have federal permission to fly drones for farming, according to the drone industry’s Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International. Federal regulators Monday relaxed the rules on small, commercial drones, a move that could spur even greater use of such aircraft on farms.

Michael is descended from Henry Miller, a renowned cattle rancher, farmer and Western landowner who helped transform semi-arid central California into fertile farmland 150 years ago by building irrigation canals, some still flowing today.

Six generations later, Michael farms a 17-square-mile portion of that same land, growing melons, carrots, onions, cotton and almonds, while carrying on in the same pioneering spirit as Miller.

“I’ve always been a big fan of technology,” said Michael, 44, mind-

ful of how climate change is making water more precious. “I think it’s really the only way we’re going to stay in business.”

On his 2,400-acre tomato crop alone, Michael estimates that this year his leak-detecting drones could save enough water to sustain more than 550 families of four for a year.

California endured the driest fouryear period on record before a relatively wet and snowy winter this year overflowed some reservoirs in the northern part of the state. Southern California, however, remains dry, and the statewide drought has not ended.

Beyond California, drones are becoming fixtures on farms in places such as Canada, Australia, South Africa and Latin America as they become more affordable and easier to use, said Ian Smith of DroneDeploy, a San Francisco-based industry leader in drone software development.

A farmer can order a commercialgrade drone online for $2,000 and receive it in the mail days later, he said. Its video camera is then paired up with a smartphone or computer tablet that is used to control the drone.

“Hook it up to a smartphone.

Boom. Take off and you’re in business,” Smith said.

Many farmers, however, have yet to grasp the full potential beyond capturing video images of crops or using infrared cameras to spot color variations in the plants that can signal a problem.

Few have used technology and invested in it to the degree Michael has. This year he began using the thermal camera, which can cost up to $10,000 and can show moisture variations in soil. He also created a new management position at his company dedicated to overseeing drones.

Recently, Danny Royer, the new vice president of technology at Bowles, stood at the tailgate of his pickup studying live images transmitted to the screen of his tablet as a drone buzzed 300 feet overhead.

Rows of mature tomato plants appeared on the screen in glowing burnt orange, indicating warmer, drier areas, while dark patches of purple showed the cool moist soil hidden below the plants.

After taking the images back to his office to analyze them, he decided there were no leaks to repair, but the soil needed to be enriched in places to help the field grow evenly.

On Monday, the Federal Aviation Administration eased the rules so that operators of commercial drones that weigh less than 55 pounds will no longer need to go through the long, expensive process of earning an airplane pilot’s license.

Instead, they will have to take a written test — but not an actual flying test at the controls of a plane — and will be issued a drone license for $150.

The rule change and emerging technology could make drones more attractive tools for farmers, said Brandon Stark, director of the University of California’s Center of Excellence for Unmanned Aircraft Systems Safety, based at the Merced campus. (ap)

Offshore wind sails forward, but a different story on land

NORTH SMITHFIELD — Even as Rhode Island makes history as the first U.S. state with an offshore wind farm, its people are not so fond of wind turbines sprouting up on land near where they live.

Dreams of a wind-powered nation sparked by the pioneering Atlantic Ocean project are running aground back on shore, where conventional battles over aesthetics and property values have stymied wind projects here and around the country.

Ruth Pacheco said she didn’t expect so much hostility when she invited a developer to build a giant wind turbine atop a forested hill at her 52-acre family farm in rural North Smithfield.

The 86-year-old proprietor of the Hi-on-a-Hill Herb Farm believes harvesting wind energy is the best way to preserve the land her family has owned and cultivated since the 1840s. But she wasn’t prepared for the dozens of “No Turbine” signs, erected outside nearly every home on the road leading up to her farm.

“We’ve lived here all our lives and seen people come and go,” Pacheco said. “I guess you just can’t take it personally. They’ve got tunnel vision out there.”

Responding to the ire of Pacheco’s neighbors, North Smithfield leaders are now drafting a town-wide ban on wind turbines, though it is too late to affect Pacheco’s project because it already has a permit.

Compared with the five-turbine, 30-megawatt offshore wind farm recently completed in blustery state waters and scheduled to switch on this fall, Rhode Island’s 20 land-based wind turbines are more modest generators of energy, with a combined capacity of about 21 megawatts, enough to power more than 6,000 homes, or a small town about the size of North Smithfield.

They’re becoming familiar landmarks in the nation’s smallest state, visible from major highways and popular beaches, but Rhode Island still ranks near the bottom of the 40 states that produce some wind energy.

U.S. Energy Department records show Texas and California have the most turbines, each with more than 10,000. The two big states vie with smaller windswept plains states in producing the most wind energy. Iowa, Oklahoma, Illinois, Kansas and Minnesota are the leaders.

Unlike those farm states, Rhode Island is tiny and densely populated. And people who like the idea of wind energy in the abstract rarely want it near their own backyards, according to a

2014 study by researchers at the University of Rhode Island that found that the turbines don’t hurt property values.

Pacheco’s neighbors said their concerns include noise, maintenance and “shadow flicker,” the blinking effect that occurs during parts of the year when the sun rises or sets behind the spinning blades. They are also concerned about the height, which at 415 feet — when the blade is pointing up — would be almost as tall as Rhode Island’s tallest building, a 26-story Providence skyscraper.

“To save her farm she’s affecting all of her neighbors,” said Sharon Mayewski, whose 17-acre lot abuts Pacheco’s.

Mayewski is president of a new group called COURT, or Conserve Our Unique Rural Town, that was formed to halt the turbine project.

On a recent visit to Pacheco’s farm, a wild turkey strolled beneath a mulberry tree as the proprietor and her two daughters showed off the property where they all grew up and still live in three adjacent houses.

Cattle once roamed its pastures, but the farm is now focused on herbs, dried everlastings, chickens, beehives and educational programs. The family has also worked with the government to plant native grasses and wildflowers and tend the property’s expansive woodland as part of a decade-long forestry management project.

None of the agricultural harvest can match the $54,000 annually promised by a 25-year lease agreement Pacheco signed with Wind Energy Development, the North Kingstown company that has installed many of the wind turbines in the state.

“It will ensure that the girls can maintain the land for future generations,” Pacheco said. “We may not be here, but we hope the footprint will be here for someone to enjoy.”

Town Councilwoman Roseanne Nadeau said she sympathizes with Pacheco but opposes wind turbines in the town. The town last year rejected the same developer’s proposal for wind turbines on municipal land behind a big-box shopping center, not far from Pacheco’s property.

Nadeau, a former real estate appraiser, doesn’t believe most of the arguments that neighbors have made against the turbine, from concerns about property values to health worries. Instead, she points to maps that show her town, near the Massachusetts border and far from the ocean, just isn’t very windy. (ap)

During the Dutch colonial era, the existence of Buleleng is known to have the largest harbor and the center of export-import activities for the crops such as cloves, coffee, chocolate and staple food. The strategic location of Buleleng as the head, not the tail of Bali region, has been widely known by sailors in the region.

A historian and academician at the Undiksha Singaraja, Dr. I Made Pageh, said that the harbor area of Buleleng has dual functions during the Dutch colonial period.

Agricultural and plantation sectors rapidly grew in Buleleng. Besides, it served as the location to record taxes applied at the harbor.

“Buleleng harbor was then moved to Celukan Bawang in 1971, so that Buleleng faded as a harbor city. Surely the source of economic activities was the harbor and the loading and unloading activities are

now carried out at Celukan Onion.

Consequently, not many marine activities are held in Buleleng,” he said, Monday (Aug. 29).

The bamboo produced at this village has a good quality for raw material of craft works. Skin of their bamboo is different from that of other region. Thus, it can yield woven products such as sokasi or other products with higher quality than the products of other villages.

In the meantime, the consumers are not only from Bali, but also (foreign) travelers getting interested in collecting the typical weaving crafts of Tigawasa village.

Lately, the business largely pursued by Tigawasa villagers has started to face a serious problem.

The stock of reed bamboo has been getting rarer because farmers already switched to plant more profitable crops. Crafters should now buy bamboo from outside the region although the quality is not the same as the previous reed bamboo planted by many local residents.

A craftsman who is also sokasi collector, I Wayan Suarjaya, re-

cently admitted that it is increasingly difficult to get reed bamboo.

This condition cannot be avoided because fewer people are remaining to plant it. To fulfill the order, he attempts to look for reed bamboo at his village. However, his efforts do not produce maximal results.

The stock of raw material is minimal, so that it is not enough to meet the needs of the required materials. “Consumers have been familiar with the superior quality of sokasi made at Tigawasa in terms of the bamboo used. At the same time, he can only meet very little genuine bamboo material,” he said.

To meet the need of raw material, Suarjaya and other crafters must bring in reed bamboo from outside the region. However, the quality is not the same as the reed bamboo cultivated at local village.

When processed, the bamboo from outside the region is easily broken, so that he is wasteful of raw materials. Besides, not all the reed bamboos in a large bundle can be processed into the material.

Lately, some residents having been successful outside the region and gained experiences, returned home to open a business such as printing, building materials or business in the culinary field. “We continuously encourage our residents to develop their creativities. They must be able to compete and live a better life through a hard work,” he said.

Within this month, many farmers at Subagan have harvested their rice. After the rice harvest, to anticipate drought as a result of reducing flow of the irrigation water, farmers chose horticultural farming. Some farmers cultivate marigold, corn or chili belonging to hot chili. The chili is cultivated on some hectares of land.

One of the chili farmers met on Monday, Nengah Nurya, was

installing trellis for his hot chili at Desa hamlet, Subagan. Since having no land, he is forced to contract a piece of dry paddy field at Subagan owned by a resident from Asak village.

“We contract a total of 1,000 square meters of land at IDR 1 million per once harvest of chili within approximately six months,” said Nurya.

This modest farmer said that he already tried to cultivate red chili because cultivating melon or watermelon is no longer feasible. Many leaves of melon in the last season looked wrinkles. He does not know what disease has caused it.

Nurya hoped his efforts to cultivate chilies can be successful, so that his hard work will not turn useless, let alone pay quite expensive land contract for farmers like him. “Indeed, the irrigation water is quite alarming. Some days after planted, his chili plants wilted due to drought. Fortunately, at the night two days ago it could get a little water,” he explained. (bud)

‘Don’t Breathe’ scores, ousts ‘Suicide Squad’ at box office

LOS ANGELES — The horror movie “Don’t Breathe” has reason to let out a big sigh of relief. Audiences turned out in droves for the late summer thriller, which brought in $26.1 million, according to studio estimates released Sunday.

That’s more than double the early predictions for how the scary pic would perform and far above the modest production budget, which was reportedly less than $10 million. Stage 6 Films produced and Sony’s Screen Gems oversaw distribution.

“Don’t Breathe” is about a group of Detroit teens who chose the wrong house to rob — that of a blind, vengeful veteran. It stars Jane Levy and Dylan Minnette and was directed by Fede Alvarez, who is known for the “Evil Dead” remake.

Sony Pictures Marketing Chief Josh Greenstein noted how rare it was for a film in this genre to have resonated so deeply with critics. The current Rotten Tomatoes score is a very fresh 87 percent. It also continues Sony’s summer of seeing successes with original films that cost very little to make.

“This marks a string of very profitable hits for Sony with very modest budgets. ‘The Shallows,’ ‘Sausage Party’ and now ‘Don’t Breathe’ were all incredibly profitable because they were made for modest budgets and did incredibly well at the box office,” Greenstein said.

It’s also the latest horror success for Hollywood this summer, which has seen films like “Lights Out,” ‘’The Conjuring 2,” and “The Purge: Election Year” thrive while their bigger budget, spectacle-driven counterparts flailed.

“As it turns out horror is the least scary genre this summer, especially to the bean counters in Hollywood,” said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for box office tracker comScore. “(They) can almost always be counted on to make money.” Horror films, Dergarabedian said, perform very well on home video too.

Australia, Taiwan, South Korea issue travel warnings for Singapore

SINGAPORE - Australia, Taiwan and South Korea advised pregnant women and those attempting to get pregnant to avoid travel to Singapore after an outbreak of the Zika virus infected more than 50 people in the city-state.

The outbreak and the warnings come as a potential blow to tourism in one of the world’s busiest travel hubs, which is already struggling to recover from a slump amid tepid global growth.

Singapore reported its first case of locally-transmitted Zika at the weekend, and the number of reported infections of the mosquito-borne virus has since jumped to 56. At least three dozen of those have since made a full recovery.

The Zika virus was detected in Brazil last year and has since spread across the Americas. It poses a risk to pregnant women because it can cause severe birth defects. It has been linked in Brazil to more than 1,800 cases of microcephaly, a rare birth defect where babies are born with abnormally small heads and brains.

The 56 confirmed cases in Singapore include only one woman.

Taiwan, Australia and South Korea advised pregnant women and those planning pregnancy to postpone trips to Singapore.

Those returning from the country should avoid pregnancy for two months. South Korean travelers will receive text messages with the warning when they arrive in Singapore.

Malaysia and Indonesia, Singapore’s closest neighbors, have stepped up protective measures following the outbreak, introducing thermal scanners at airports and border checkpoints.

Singapore’s Tourism Board said it was monitoring developments, adding the city state remained a “safe travel destination”, and it was premature to consider any impact.
