‘Wonder Woman’ film and star live up to the name

“Wonder Woman “ has been the subject of so much superfluous fuss, it’d be easy to forget that behind all of the hand-wringing and both symbolic and real pressure to succeed there’s actually a movie meant to entertain. Yet, like the heroine at its center, “Wonder Woman” the movie rises with powerful grace above the noise. It’s not perfect, but it’s often good, sometimes great and exceptionally re-watchable. Director Patty Jenkins’ film is so threaded with sincerity and goodness it’s a wonder how it got past the pugnacious minds responsible for what’s come before. “Wonder Woman” evokes not only the spirit of Richard Donner’s “Superman,” but also Joe Johnston’s “Captain America: The First Avenger,” while still being its own thing. Just look to the image of Gal Gadot confidently striding out alone onto an unwinnable battlefield with only a shield, a sword and a mission — and prevailing. It’s enough to give you goosebumps. “Wonder Woman” is structured as a coming-of-age story about how Diana, the Amazonian princess, becomes Wonder Woman. It’s framed, clumsily, as an over two hour flashback provoked by a note from Bruce Wayne. Of all the stupid interconnected universe things! Thankfully, Jenkins transitions quickly into the actual story about a naive idealist who comes to accept the complexities of mankind. From a tender age, Diana, living on the achingly idyllic island of Themyscira, dreams of being a warrior. Her mother, Queen Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen) disapproves, although she inexplicably withholds the real reason. It’s no wonder Diana aspires to fight. She’s been told that their sole purpose is to keep the peace and destroy Ares, the god of war. Also, and not insignificantly, the warriors led by General Antiope (Robin Wright), are some of the fiercest babes ever to grace the screen. They fly around with swords and shields, bedecked in armored mini dresses and wedged gladiator sandals that allow them to leap 50 feet in the air. Young Diana trains in secret, and then with

In London and at the battlefront, Diana gets a crash course in humanity, from the ills (sexism, alcoholism, colonialism, racism, apathy) to the good (babies, snow, ice cream). It’s all very simplistic, but Gadot’s serious and unapologetic curiosity sells the dubious premise that a woman so versed in so many things from Socrates to the “pleasures of the flesh” could be this unaware of human flaws. Perhaps they only teach the good stuff

in Themyscira. But that’s what Trevor is there for — to help this otherworldly crusader acclimate. Pine plays Trevor as a spiritual cousin to Indiana Jones (he even gets to goof around with an accent that immediately evokes the “tapestries” bit from “The Last Crusade”). He’s on his own mission, to stop the comically evil Germans General Ludendorff (Danny Huston) and Doctor Poison (Elena Anaya) from prolonging the war, but it’s never a question that this is Diana’s show. Jenkins keeps the look and feel of the film classical, as it breezes through a strong second act. But, being a DC film, “Wonder Woman” can’t help but devolve into a blurry, concrete-busting third act that feels

dispiritingly like all the rest, not to mention a baffling reveal that negates most of Diana’s growth. It’s not enough to negate the good, though, and much of that is Gadot’s doing. She is the perfect Wonder Woman — a true blue hero who’s as believable in her bafflement of women’s fashions and social mores as she is dead-lifting a tank and swatting away machine gun fire with only her arm cuff. I never cared about Wonder Woman before. Now I do. “Wonder Woman,” a Warner Bros. release, is rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for “sequences of violence and action, and some suggestive content.” Running time: 141 minutes. “Shocked” S.Korea leader Moon orders probe into U.S. THAAD additions

SEOUL - South Korean President Moon Jae-in has ordered a probe after the Defence Ministry failed to inform him that four more launchers for the controversial U.S. THAAD anti-missile system had been brought into the country, his spokesman said on Tuesday. The Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system battery was initially deployed in March in the southeastern region of Seongju with just two of its maximum load of six launchers to counter a growing North Korean missile threat. During his successful campaign for the May 9 presidential election, Moon called for a parliamentary review of the system, whose deployment has also infuriated China, North Korea’s lone major ally. “President Moon said it was very shocking” to hear the four additional launchers had been installed without being reported to the new government or to the

public, presidential spokesman Yoon Young-chan told a media briefing. Moon had campaigned on a more moderate approach to Pyongyang, calling for engagement even as the reclusive state pursues nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programmes in defiance of U.N. Security Council resolutions and threats of more sanctions. The U.S. military in South Korea did not have immediate comment on Moon’s comments. The South Korean military also did not immediately comment. CHINA TENSIONS EASING Moon’s order of a probe into

South Korea’s Jeju Air said on Tuesday China has approved a plan to double its flights to the Chinese city of Weihai from June 2. China has denied it had discriminated against South Korean companies, which have faced product boycotts and bans on Chinese tourists visiting South Korea. A Korean-Chinese joint drama “My Goddess, My Mom” starring South Korean actress Lee Da-hae, whose broadcast had been indefinitely delayed in China, was told

by its Chinese partner recently that it will soon be aired, according to JS Pictures, Lee’s agent. An official at South Korean tour agency Mode Tour told Reuters it hoped China may lift a ban on selling trips to South Korea, which had been in place since March 15, as early as the second week of June. Although there have been no official orders from the Chinese government to lift the ban, a few Chinese travel agencies have sent inquiries about package tours, he said.

Building children creativity at Cardboard House

CARDBOARD House Community is creativity space founded by I Wayan Esa Dananjaya in 2014. It is meant to develop the potential of the arts, especially the arts owned by children of elementary and junior high school age. The community based at Tangguntiti hamlet, Tonja, Denpasar, utilizes used goods such as cardboard, newspaper, cans, plastic bottles and shard as the medium for their creativity. With the touch of art, the unused materials can be transformed into artistic works of art.

“The initial idea of establishing this Cardboard House Community is underpinned by my concerns about the piles of waste thrown away. Actually, not a few of the garbage is actually used goods that can still be reused. For example, the raw materials can be used to make various types of handicrafts,” said Esa Dananjaya to Bali Post, not long ago. According to this alumnus of the Fine Arts Study Program at the Faculty of Literature and Arts Education of IKIP PGRI Bali, the concern was motivated by his spirit to gather a number of students at the SDN 4 Tonja elementary school who have interest to pursue the arts. Initially, there were only six children wishing to join. After that, they were given intensive technical guidance related to painting by using cardboard sheets, starting from the process of drawing the shape, composing, coloring techniques to collage techniques. “As the first measure, I just indeed introduce them to painting techniques on cardboard media or simple twodimensional field. They are also taught about the use of crayon, acrylic paint to oil paint. After they master the two dimensional painting, they are introduced to painting on the surface of bottles and other objects,”

he explained. Apparently, he got positive response from children around his residence to the activities in the Cardboard House Community. More and more children join the community and have reached about 26 children who regularly attend the painting class. After mastering the skills of painting, they are taught to make various types of craft made from cardboard and used newspapers such as bags, wallets, hats and other craft objects. “This community is also often invited to attend some events related to children activities, like Denpasar Rare (Kid) Festival initiated by Penggak Men Mersi in cooperation with the Denpasar municipality. In the Denpasar Festival 2016, the Cardboard House Community also participated to enliven this annual event by creating installation work made from used mineral water bottles. Our characteristic is indeed to utilize used goods as a medium to express our creativity,” said Esa Dananjaya. He also added that a number of his students routinely participate in painting contest and get a pretty prideful achievement. Through his Cardboard House Community, Esa Dananjaya wanted to mobilize the awareness of children from an early age to be more concerned and responsible for their environment. One of the classical problems today is the unmanaged solid waste. By utilizing some of the waste as a medium of creativity, it will surely contribute to alleviate the burden of environment. In addition, he also wanted to provide a space for children to use their free time after school activities wisely. By that way, their potential to engage in negative activities can be minimized as low as possible. “Hopefully, the Cardboard House Community can become a positive and fun space forever for children in making them into creative and responsible for their environment,” he said. Unfit for theme, mekotek tradition fails to appear in BAF

MANGUPURA - Mekotek tradition originally scheduled to appear in the 39th Bali Arts Festival (BAF) finally vanished. The tradition of catastrophe repellent owned by Munggu village, Mengwi, Badung, did not comply with the theme set by the committee namely the government of Bali province. Head of the Badung Culture Office, Ida Bagus Anom Bhasma, justified the matter. Appearance of this mekotek tradition will be replaced with fragmentary show entitled Tulak Tunggul. The dance describing revetment of water at Taman Ayun Temple is often displayed every piodalan or feast day at the Taman Ayun, Mengwi. This sacred art is in accordance with the theme of BAF 2017, namely Ulun Danu that means Preserving Water as Source of Life. “Mekotekan is cancelled (to appear—Ed), so as not to deviate. We replace it with Tulak Punggul fragmentary show telling about the dam at Taman Ayun Temple,” said I.B. Anom Bhasma on Monday (May 29). Moreover, his agency will involve 9,000 dancers and gamelan players mostly consisting of young artists. “We involve many young people in this BAF because they will be the next generation that will pass on the art and culture in Badung,” he said. Related to the budget, he mentioned that it reaches IDR 3 billion. The organizing committee will also provide funding support worth IDR 250 million. “Both funding will be combined. After that, it is divided, but we give priority to mass art troupes. They are 24 art troupes of typical Badung,” he said. Britain’s real-life “Iron Man” has high hopes for jet suit

SOMERSET, England, May 26 (Reuters) The British inventor of an “Iron Man”-style jet suit has lofty hopes that his project, which started out as fun experiment, could become a practical tool for industries ranging from entertainment to the military.

Richard Browning, a 38-year-old former commodities trader with little experience of engineering, developed his jet suit with the help of friends over the last 18 months. It is powered by six gas turbine engines which combined generate 800 horse-power. “We didn’t set out to build an “Iron Man” suit – it’s just accidental,” Browning said, in reference to the highly successful trilogy of super hero films starring Robert Downey Jr. The suit’s engines are mounted on the pilot’s lower back and on each arm. It powers up using a hand-held throttle. Browning said the suit is capable of carrying a person thousands of feet in the air, and in theory could attain a speed of around 280 miles an hour (450 kph). For safety reasons, however, Browning hovers just a few feet off the ground. Browning, who first developed the suit in his garage, describes it as a cross between a jet ski and a Formula One car. He believes it can be adapted to be used in the military, search and rescue and theme parks - or in fact anyone who has the funds to buy one.

Browning showed off his piloting skills at a flight test on Thursday, breaking his record for speed by travelling over 30mph, covering a distance of several hundred meters. Browning said he has received investment from a venture capitalist, and has also secured interest from entertainment giants and the British and U.S. militaries. If man hours were taken into account, he said the suit would have cost “millions” to develop, and that the hardware alone cost a six-figure sum. However, he said flight costs are low as around 12 litres of standard diesel is used. Browning is not the only person to have pursued dreams of jet-powered glory. In Dubai, firefighters have showcased jet boots that allow the wearer to rise high into the air using water pressure, and French inventor Franky Zapata has created a jet-powered hover-board. The next step in Browning’s project is the Genesis suit which he is developing with the aid of experts and investors, but challenges still remain. Specifically how to ascend safely from the ground to a height that a parachute could be deployed. “It’s a real challenge if you have an engine failure at 50-60 feet. You’re going to really do yourself a mischief,” Browning said, adding “we’re working on a whole bunch of technology to address that, and until we do, we keep pretty low.” (rtr)

Storage of nuclear waste poses threat to U.S., scientists warn

WASHINGTON - The reluctance of U.S. federal regulators to require operators of nuclear reactors to spend $5 billion to enhance the security of spent fuel rods stored underground threatens the country with a potential catastrophe, scientists warned on Friday. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission greatly underestimated the risk and potential contamination of a nuclear waste fire triggered by a quake or a planned attack, experts writing in the journal “Science” said. In 2014, the NRC found the chance of a disaster caused by leaving radioactive waste in storage pools was too remote to warrant the cost of moving it to safer dry casks. An earthquake that could trigger a radiation leak was likely less than once every 10 million years, hardly justifying the cost of about $50 million per reactor to transfer spent fuel, the NRC said in that report. An accident at Japan’s Fukushima nuclear plant in 2011 was triggered by a tsunami after an earthquake. “We think the NRC gamed their analysis essentially to get the answer they want,” said Edwin Lyman, a senior scientist at the Union of Concerned Scientists and one of the authors of the article in “Science,” a magazine published by the American Association for the

Advancement of Science. Michael Schoeppner and Frank von Hippel of Princeton University were co-authors. On average, such a disaster could force 8 million people to evacuate and cause $2 trillion in damage in the United States, the world’s largest producer of nuclear energy, according to the report. The commission said in a statement on Friday it stood by a staff finding last year that “the security of U.S. nuclear power plants remains extremely robust.” Rod McCullum, senior director at the Nuclear Energy Institute, an industry group, said in an email that there was ample evidence that used fuel at 90 U.S. storage sites was properly managed. The collapse of a decommissioned tunnel at a plutoniumhandling facility in Hanford, Washington, this month was a reminder of the potential risk of storing radioactive material. There was no spent fuel in the tunnel at the time and no indication anyone was exposed to radiation. When removed from reactors, spent fuel rods are cooled under 23 feet (7 meters) of water. To reduce costs, rods are packed into vaults instead of dry storage casks, scientists wrote. If the water was drained away due to an attack or accident, the rods would burn and spew radioactive fallout. (rtr)

MANGUPURA - Various modi operandi are applied by gang of thieves disguising as motorcycle taxi drivers to steal money of foreigners at ATMs. This was experienced by Mikiko Kyo, 39, from Japan when withdrawing money in the Mandiri ATM at Circle K (CK) Legian, Kuta, on Wednesday (May 24). Her money was secretly taken by the gang consisting of I Made Suardana alias Beker, 34, I Gede Ardana, 33, I Gede Sukarmaya alias Maya, 36, and I Kadek Depin, 26. “The thieves are specialists targeting foreigners. They share duties where one will distract victim, one resumes transactions at ATMs and another carries the stolen money,” said Chief of Kuta Police, Wayan Sumara, accompanied by mobile detective aide unit, Budi Artama, on Monday (May 29). According to police chief, it originated from the information of village-commissioned police officer at Legian saying that at Circle K of Si Do’i intersection there were Japanese tourists whose money was stolen by visitors while withdrawing money from the ATM machine of Bank Mandiri. To follow up on the information, the operation team led by I Putu Budi Artama, mobile detective aide unit directly came to the scene. At the scene, there was still the victim accompanied by her companions. Based on the results of interrogation against the victim, the officers obtained the characteristics of the perpetrators. From the witnesses around the Circle K were obtained the nickname of one of the perpetrators namely Beker. “From the witness’s information, the perpetrators could be arrested. They are known in Kuta because they also have side job as motorcycle taxi drivers,” he said. As in the results of interrogation,

the perpetrators admitted to have taken the victim’s money while withdrawing it from ATM machine of Bank Mandiri. Each perpetrator has their respective role, and when getting any results they will be divided equally. This gang was standby at the ATM. Inflation for the euro zone as a whole is due on Wednesday and is also expected to have eased to 1.5 percent in May from 1.9 percent a month earlier. Higher euro zone consumer price rises have prompted pressure on the ECB to reduce its multi-

billion-euro asset purchase plan, though policymakers said last week that inflation remains weak and the programme must continue as planned. INE data also showed Spain’s national consumer price index rose by 1.9 percent in May on an annual basis, down from 2.6 percent in April. Venezuela’s Information Ministry, which fields queries on behalf of the Finance Ministry, did not respond to requests for comment. The bonds were not sold directly by Venezuela’s central bank but rather through an intermediary, three finance industry sources, including one from Goldman, told Reuters on Monday. “The intermediaries are in Europe,” said the source at Goldman. With Venezuela’s inefficient state-led economic model struggling under lower oil prices, Maduro’s unpopular government has become ever more dependent on financial deals or asset sales to bring in coveted foreign exchange. BANGLI - Residents of Peninjoan village, Tembuku, are forced to pave the damaged road at Penarukan hamlet independently. Philippines urges Islamist rebels to surrender as battle enters eighth day

MARAWI - The Philippine military urged Islamist militants occupying a southern city to turn themselves in on Tuesday, the eighth day of a push by security forces using armoured vehicles and firing rockets from helicopters to eliminate the gunmen.

The government says it is close to retaking Marawi from the Islamic State-linked Maute group, which seized parts of the city after a failed attempt by security forces to capture Isnilon Hapilon, the militants’ so-called emir of Southeast Asia. “We call on the remaining terrorists to surrender while there is an opportunity,” a military spokesman, BrigadierGeneral Restituto Padilla, told reporters. Strong Indonesia earthquake damages buildings, hurts some JAKARTA — A strong, shallow earthquake rocked Indonesia’s central Sulawesi province Monday evening, injuring at least three people and damaging some buildings and houses. The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude-6.8 quake was centered in a thinly populated area 79 kilometers (49 miles) southeast of the provincial capital, Palu, at a depth of 9.1 kilometers (6 miles). The National Disaster Management Agency said buildings were damaged in Poso, a city to the southeast of the epicenter, and a number of houses and churches were damaged in nearby villages. At least three villagers were hospitalized for head wounds, it said. The agency posted photos of damage in Poso on Twitter. One showed a collapsed building and another showed a convenience store with goods strewn on its floor but otherwise intact. Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency recorded 14 aftershocks of up to magnitude-5.2, also at a shallow depth. Shallow earthquakes tend to cause more damage on the Earth’s surface. It said the land-based quake didn’t have any potential to cause a tsunami. Indonesia is prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions due to its location along the Pacific “Ring of Fire.” A powerful Indian Ocean quake and tsunami in 2004 killed a total of 230,000 people in a dozen countries, most of them in Indonesia. Indonesian mobile cinema keeps old film format alive in digital age

JAKARTA - Indonesian entrepreneur Kamaluddin loves the gritty look of old 35-millimeter film so much that he spends most of his nights screening vintage movies at weddings and parties around Jakarta, the capital. Filmmakers and cinemas have almost completely phased out the 35-mm. format in the past decade as they switch to cheaper, better quality digital formats.

But for Kamaluddin, running a ‘mobile cinema’ means bringing nostalgia and entertainment to the city’s poorer residents. “It’s more artistic and the sound is much better than digital,” he said. “If you watch three movies in a row, you won’t feel tired, just relaxed.” He transports a 35-mm projector and sound system, films, a screen and large tent in his truck. At the venue, usually an open field or outside the home of a customer holding a party or celebration, people gather to watch as Kamaluddin sets up his equipment. The movies usually run into the early hours of the morning, with

street vendors selling food, clothes and toys often setting up nearby, to sell their wares to the cinema-goers. Viewers get a chance to reacquaint themselves with films from Hollywood’s golden era and movies from India’s Bollywood, long out of circulation. Bollywood movies are hugely popular in Indonesia, especially on its islands of Bali and Java, where music and dance are heavily influenced by Indian tradition and performing arts. “This theatre is free of charge and we can watch old movies which we hardly find out there,” said one viewer, Nurul Fitriyah, as she watched an old film on a huge fabric screen. But earnings have fallen steadily in the mobile cinema business as the younger middle class flocks to airconditioned movie theatres that offer reclining chairs, or even beds, alongside fast food and soft drinks. “In 1997, in one night I could set up four screens in four different locations,” said Kamaluddin, who estimates a night’s work could bring in up to $300 in the old days. “Now, if I’m lucky, I can set up projectors twice a month and earn around $100 per night.” (rtr)

Taman Festival Bali ‘ghost town’ DENPASAR - The quirkiest place on this list is an abandoned theme park, the Taman Festival Bali, which saw only a slight of its heyday in 1997, but ultimately closed down three years later due to marketing and financial problems. Now considered a ghost town, literally by some of the locals who believe that long abandoned places are eventually inhabited by spirits of the ‘unseen world’, it is a favourite photo location for photographers looking for a desolate, post apocalyptic-like setting. He stayed cool last spring when Cleveland fought back from a 3-1 deficit to win its first title. Pressure intensifies in the postseason, when possessions, turnovers and rebounds are magnified. As the drama builds, Lue stays composed, setting the tone for his players. “Throughout the postseason there’s so many different emotions,” James said. “Going high, going low. And if you’re a coach able to just stay evenkeeled throughout the whole thing, it relaxes the rest of the group.” Don’t be fooled by Lue’s cool. He can get fiery when needed. “I always get mad when guys make shots in the first quarter, second quarter, pumping their chest and then the game on the line they miss,” Lue said. “So you’re doing all that for no reason. Woods apologises for DUI arrest, blames medication

Former world number one golfer Tiger Woods said an unexpected reaction to prescribed medications was to blame for his early-morning DUI arrest near his Jupiter Island home in Florida on Monday. Woods, who underwent surgery last week to relieve lingering back pain, was booked at 7:18 a.m. (1118 GMT) and released several hours later on his own recognizance, Palm Beach County Police said in an online report. Woods said in a statement released by his spokesman that alcohol was not a factor in his arrest but apologised and added that he took full responsibility. “I want the public to know that alcohol was not involved,” he said. “What happened was an unexpected reaction to prescribed medications. I didn’t realize the mix of medications had affected me so strongly. “I would like to apologize with all my heart to my family, friends and the fans. I expect more from myself, too.” Woods, who is second on the all-time list with 14 major titles, said he cooperated with police and wanted to thank the Jupiter Police Department and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s office for their professionalism. “I will do everything in my power to ensure this never happens again,” he added. The incident occurred less than a week after Woods expressed optimism about his future following back surgery, saying on his website that he experienced “instant relief” and had not “felt this good in years.” Woods has previously made headlines away from the golf course. His private life unraveled in late 2009 over allegations about affairs with several women and ultimately led to the end of his marriage. Those allegations followed a bizarre early morning car accident outside his Florida home that rapidly ballooned into a fully-fledged sex scandal which turned his previously unblemished life and career upside down. Sp rt Barcelona name Valverde as coach BARCELONA - Barcelona named former Athletic Bilbao coach Ernesto Valverde on Monday as the successor to Luis Enrique and he will take charge of the La Liga runners-up on a two-year contract with the option of a third. Valverde, who will be officially unveiled on Thursday, played for Barcelona as a forward between 1988 and 1990 under Johan Cruyff and is one of many of the Dutchman’s former pupils to have turned to coaching upon retiring from playing.

“He’s very happy very excited, he has the ability, experience and knowledge for the job,” Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu told a news conference. “He loves youth football and he has the right style to coach this club and knows how the club works. He has a high work rate, he is passionate about football and interested in working with the latest technology.” Bartomeu thanked Luis Enrique, who rounded off his three-year tenure at Barcelona on Saturday by beating Alaves 3-1 to win the King’s Cup for a third year in a row, the ninth trophy he led the club to. “We want to thank Luis Enrique for the work he did in this time, he was excellent in these three years. A great coach and Barcelona man is leaving us but the doors of the Nou Camp will always be open to him,” he said. The president, however, said Luis Enrique’s last season in charge, which finished with only the King’s Cup in the trophy cabinet, was a disappointment. “We expected more from this season, we have

diagnosed what went wrong and we are very demanding of ourselves,” he added. “We were not satisfied, neither were the players, nor the coaches and directors. But now we are beginning a new era.” Valverde, 53, began his coaching career with Athletic Bilbao’s youth set-up and is the Basque club’s longest serving coach, overseeing 308 games over six years in two different spells. The game finished 0-0 after extra time and German defender Christopher Schindler struck the winning penalty for Huddersfield after Reading failed to convert their last two spot-kicks. The win ensured at least 170 million pounds ($218 million) in guaranteed revenue for Huddersfield as a Premier League club next season. “The prize is so big, I feel for (Reading)....but it is our turn and I think we deserve it because of the way we have done it. We give a lot of hope to smaller clubs,” Huddersfield chairman Dean Hoyle said. Huddersfield were relegated from the old first division in 1972 and have struggled in recent years in the Championship with 16th place their best finish since returning to the second tier five years ago.
