NEW YORK - Beyonce dominated the MTV Video Music awards on Sunday, prowling the stage with a 15 minute medley from her powerful “Lemonade” album and taking home eight statuettes, including the top prize - video of the year.

On a night when women ruled, Britney Spears returned to the VMA stage for the first time in a decade, and Rihanna performed four times to mark her lifetime achievement award. Beyonce brought the house down at New York’s Madison Square Garden, stringing together five of her “Lemonade” album tracks about betrayal, revenge and female empowerment in a song and dance routine that brought a long standing ovation. VMA organizers had announced only three hours before Sunday’s show began that Beyonce would perform. The singer arrived on the red carpet accompanied by the mothers of three African-American men who have died at the hands of U.S. police in the past two years. Her politically charged “Formation” beat Adele’s 2015 comeback single “Hello,” Drake’s “Hotline Bling,” Justin Bieber’s “Sorry” and Kanye West’s sleeping nude celebrity look-alikes in “Famous” for video of the year.

Cultural tourism of Bali serves as locomotive of Wonderful Indonesia

DENPASAR - The plan of President Joko Widodo regarding the ‘10 New Balis’ indicates that tourism of Indonesia is inseparable from Bali. So, it is not an exaggeration to name Bali as the locomotive of Wonderful Indonesia as the tagline of the promotion program by Ministry of Tourism. This happens because the position of Bali has always been ‘a beginning’ that is then followed by other regions. “Ten New Balis plan of the president shows that tourism is inseparable from Bali and Bali is inseparable from cultural tourism. When culture vanishes, it will certainly have significant impact on the tourism of Indonesia,” said the member of Commission II of the Bali House of Representatives, A.A. Ngurah Adhi Ardhana, in Denpasar, Sunday (Aug. 28). Adhi Ardhana added that it is important for tourism players and

the governments in Bali to realize that Bali is nothing without culture. Strengthening of cultural tourism should emerge from each individual to get the best results. It will be never enough simply through incentives and regulations. “It would be very dangerous when giving discretion to the efforts forgetting culture. So, the best thing is the whole components should realize. By that way, they will have the awareness of protecting their own culture,” said this PDI-P

According to Adhi Ardhana, the concept of cultural tourism has been accommodated in the Regional Bylaw (Perda) on Regional Tourism Development Master Plan (Riparda) of Bali Province 2015-2029. In the regional bylaw, there has been a clear definition about cultural tourism, nature tourism, and man-made (artificial) tourism. In this case, the government is obliged to prepare everything related to infrastructure, promotion to cultural preservation. “In terms regulation, we have

owned the cultural tourism. In other words, it has been well defined. Here, it is indicated that the Riparda we have made will be in line with our expectations namely preserving the cultural tourism,” added this former member the Riparda Special Committee. The Head of the Bali Tourism Office, A.A. Gede Yuniartha Putra, said that the enactment of legislation on Tour Guide some time ago is one of the government’s commitments to implement the Riparda legislation. In this case, all the guides in Bali should pass the exam of Balinese culture as the requirement to have the tour guide identity card (KTPP). “This happens because our tourism belongs to cultural tourism, so that everything must be based on our culture. Thus, the culture should

be preserved so that it is different from other regions,” he said. Other than regional bylaw on the Riparda, added Yuniartha, Regional Bylaw No.2/2012 on Balinese Cultural Tourism is also a proof of how Bali Province maintains the culture because from the past time Bali has been a major milestone of Indonesia tourism currently included in the Wonderful Indonesia. “When talking about Wonderful Indonesia, it is the overall tourism branding. Bali formerly had its own branding as Bali Shanti and was then changed into Bali is My Life, but many people did not know about the branding. On that account, there will be a re-branding of tourism so that it will be in line with the Wonderful Indonesia,” he added.

After price rises, tobacco demand feared to decrease

SINGARAJA - A number of tobacco farmers in Buleleng began to respond to the government plan that will raise the price of cigarettes in the near future. Over the discourse, it is ascertained to boost the price of tobacco. On the other hand, farmers even are worried if the tobacco demand will drop. Moreover if the discourse is politicized, farmers remain to be the victims of policies benefiting certain groups. This was expressed by the Secretary of the Indonesia Tobacco Farmers Association (APTI) of Bali, Agung Adnyana, recently. Furthermore, Agung said that the plan of government to increase the price of cigarette to IDR 50,000 will boost the price of tobacco. This increase will bring in profit to farmers. However, this seems to mean nothing as cigarette manufacturers reduce their demand for raw materials. This situation is also caused by the plan of the government that will increase the target of state revenue from cigarette taxes. In this situation, cigarette manufacturers will automatically reduce their production and raw material purchases. Not only that, the absorption of labor will certainly reduce when compared to previous condition. “From this discourse, the price of tobacco will be on the rise, while the demand decrease as cigarette manufacturers may limit their production. Thus, the policy is not clear whether farmers will get profit

or not,” he said. According to Agung, cigarette manufacturers need 240,000 tons of tobacco. Of the total necessity, farmers in several districts in Bali could only meet 1,935 tons. From the latest data, the Buleleng supplies 1,500 tons of Virginia tobacco, 90 tons of chopped tobacco, and 30 tons of White Burley tobacco. In the meantime, Jembrana district produces 20 tons, Gianyar (200 tons), Bangli (75 tons) and Karangasem (20 tons). Seeing the data, tobacco production in Bali remains relatively small. It happens because the existing land has not been cultivated maximally. He cited that Buleleng has high potential to develop the agriculture reaching 7,000 hectares. Of such potential, the land managed reaches an area of 3,500 hectares, while 600 hectares of them are developed by Gudang Garam.

In the meantime, Beringin Bali can only develop for 300 hectares. Then, the remaining is chopped tobacco reaching 60 hectares and black tobacco (25 hectares). In addition to the problem, farmers still assume there is still impression if the company does monopoly starting from the price of tobacco to the willingness of partner companies to develop tobacco more optimally in accordance with the existing potential owned by the region. “Tobacco production we supply stays quite small and the land can still actually be developed but not be managed due to the allocation of land by the company. Not to mention, there is impression of monopoly committed by the company regarding the price,” he explained. On the other hand, Agung said that since the difficult condition hits, farmers in the region seem unenthusiastic to cultivate tobacco for some growing seasons. They consider the selling price and the capital to be borne are not comparable. To find the way out of this problem, he hoped there will be a policy in favor of farmers. “Farmers are getting desperate and they did not cultivate the land that they should. Jainal, 43, a merchant of frangipani from Jember when met at Yehembang village, Mendoyo, confirmed that since the past week the price of frangipani business has revived after going dormant for nearly six months. Now, he has started selling again but the price just reached IDR 7,000 per kilogram. “But I purchase from the residents at IDR 5,000 per kilogram,” he explained. Scientists find Earth-like planet circling sun’s nearest neighbor

MUENCHEN - Scientists have discovered a planet that appears to be similar to Earth circling the star closest to the sun, potentially a major step in the quest to find out if life exists elsewhere in the universe, research published on Wednesday showed. The relative proximity of the planet, known as Proxima b, gives scientists a better chance to eventually capture an image of it, to help them establish whether it has an atmosphere and water, which is believed to be necessary for life. Future studies may reveal if any atmosphere contains tell-tale chemicals of biological life, such as methane, according to a paper published in this week’s issue of the journal Nature. “The key question of our initiative was whether there were potentially life-bearing planets orbiting these stars. We know now there is at least one planet with some characteristics similar to the Earth,” said Pete Worden, a former top NASA manager, who was speaking at a European Southern Observatory webcast news conference to announce the find. The planet, located about 4.2 light-years from Earth, or 25 tril-

lion miles (40 trillion km), is the closest of some 3,500 planets that have been discovered beyond the solar system since 1995, according to the paper. “This planetary system is much closer than any other that we know so detailed investigation is easier,” astronomer Ansgar Reiners, with the University of Gottingen in Germany, told reporters on a conference call. Astronomers got their first hint of a planet circling the sun’s small dim neighbor star in 2013. But they needed additional observations, using more precise instruments, to make a definitive call. An international team of 31 scientists found the planet after careful and repeated measurements of slight shifts in the color of the light coming from its host star, Proxima Centauri, which is a small, dim star in the Alpha Centauri system. The shifts, which astronomers call

“wobbles,” are caused by the gravitational tugging of a planet roughly 1.3 times the size of Earth on the parent star. Based on the timing of wobbles, scientists determined that the planet circles its host star in just 11 days, compared to Earth’s 365-day orbit around the sun. That puts the planet far closer to its parent star than Earth orbits the sun. However, Proxima Centauri is so much smaller and dimmer than the sun that its planet’s orbit is suitably positioned for liquid water despite being just 4.4 million miles away. “Chances are good that it’s a viable, Earth-like planet today,” said astronomer Pedro Amado, with the Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía in Granada, Spain. But scientists are unsure if red dwarf stars like Proxima Centauri are good hosts for life. Planets orbiting close enough to keep water liquid would be blasted with 100 times more high-energy radiation than Earth receives from the sun, though what impact that would have on life is a matter of scientific debate. “We don’t think it’s a showstopper,” Amado said. Goddess Danu statue of 20-meter high to be built at Batur lakeside

BANGLI - A statue depicting Goddess Danu with the height of approximately 20 meters will be established at Batur lakeside, Kintamani. As planned, the statue will serve as the icon to draw more travelers to visit this largest lake in Bali. Headman of Songan B, Jro Lanang, stated on Sunday (Aug. 28) that the construction of the statue of Goddess Danu is carried out based on the idea of local villagers. They want the existence of a statue that can depict the grandeur

of Goddess Danu. The location chosen for the construction of the statue of Goddess Danu is the Batur lakeside, exactly 50 meters south of the Segara Temple. Jro Lanang said, according to the plan, the statue cannot only be

seen as the figure of Goddess Danu, but also as the figure of the Goddess Ganga by Indian travelers and the Goddess Kwan Im when viewed by Chinese travelers. “Later on, to make it seen as the figure of the three goddesses, it will be arranged in such away at the finishing stage,” he explained. Jro Lanang said that pursuant to the agreement, the financing for the construction of the statue

does not use the village fund, but the assistance from the third-party contribution, in this case from the senator (DPD) Wedakarna and some other foreign businessmen. In the construction of this statue, villagers of Songan only provide the location and help the process of transporting the materials to the construction site. “To transport the materials to the location cannot use a landline but a boat to cross the

lake,” he explained. He added if the construction process can run smoothly, the statue of Goddess Danu will have stood for a maximum of nine months. “Construction of this statue serves as the icon for tourism development in the area of Lake Batur,” he said. For the past year, the group in the dome on a Mauna Loa mountain could go outside only while wearing spacesuits. On Sunday, the simulation ended, and the scientists emerged. Cyprien Verseux, a crew member from France, said the simulation shows a mission to Mars can succeed. “I can give you my personal impression which is that a mission to Mars in the close future is realistic. I think the technological and psychological obstacles can be overcome,” Verseux said. Christiane Heinicke, a crew member from Germany, said the scientists were able to find their own water in a dry climate. “Showing that it works, you can actually get water from the ground that is seemingly dry. It would work on Mars and the implication is that you would be able to get water on Mars from this little greenhouse construct,” she said. Tristan Bassingthwaighte, a doctor of architecture candidate at University of Hawaii, served as the crew’s architect.

“The UH research going on up here is just super vital when it comes to picking crews, figuring out how people are going to actually work on different kinds of missions, and sort of the human factors element of space travel, colonization, whatever it is you are actually looking at,” Bassingthwaighte said. Kim Binsted, principal investigator for the Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation (HI-SEAS), said the researchers are looking forward to getting in the ocean and eating fresh produce and other foods that weren’t available in the dome. “HI-SEAS is an example of international collaborative research hosted and run by the University of Hawai’i. So it’s really exciting to be able to welcome the crew back to earth and back to Hawai’i after a year on Mars,” Binsted said. NASA funded the study run through the University of Hawaii. To that end, the regent called for the investor of The Mandala to submit the required permits. Moreover, the open stage is reportedly to be launched in two months. “It would be launched in the upcoming two months but the permits have not been renewed. Necessarily it should convey to the government and submit the permits to the licensing office,” she said. Other transactions, added Gus Wisnu, went in the 25 SVF bazaar booths and 50 booths of the Sanur Creative Expo. HILL areas at Sumbersari, Melaya village have become a source of livelihood for some local people. Armed with traditional mining tools, a number of residents mine limestone at the bottom of the hill. It needs extra courage to dig the limestone. Some residents have even been pursuing this risky profession for dozens of years. Limestone is much needed. Other than for foundations of buildings or roads, it can also be processed into other purposes. Preparation of burned limestone also gives job opportunity to a number of residents around this traditional quarry area. Caves are formed from the excavations beneath the hills. Among a

number of locations in Jembrana, only Sumbersari has the potential of limestone. “Every day there are always some orders and sometimes we get overwhelmed,” said Made Nasa, 40, one of the traditional miners. This miner from Melaya claimed to have moved several times from one location to another at Sumbersari. The excavation will be buried by itself when the soil on the hill collapses. To detect the hills about to collapsing, traditional miners only rely on their feelings and the use of simple bamboo tool. Some tall bamboos are installed lining at the mouth of the cave. It functions to give warning when the hill will collapse.

“When distressed, the wood or bamboo logs will sound like cracks. On hearing that, we must be vigilant and immediately come out of the mouth of the cave,” said the man having been mining for 14 years. Around the site, there is a mound of earth and limestone posing the result of avalanches. Under the heaps sit a former pit of excavation. It avalanched two months ago and covered up the pit. Row space at the base of the hill is divided into three to four mining sites. So, it forms a number of caves. When excavating the limestone, all people do it with ultimate circumspection. All miners sculpt by looking for the patterns and loopholes which can result

in limestone boulders. A mining area is limited with a simple way, namely by suspending a bottle with a rope tied above as the boundary marker. Each location in the cave is deliberately formed into a circular hole to form a kind of pillar that can support the hole formed by the quarry activities. At one quarry location, Nasa and friends get uncertain results. Sometimes they can get one or two cubic meters of limestone. For the volume of a four-wheeled truck, the limestone is sold for about IDR 250,000 net. The results are then divided into two with his fellow worker. He is truly aware of the risk at the limestone quarry having given him earnings for teens of years.

Result of the limestone quarry activities is also used by a number of local people by processing the material first. For instance, it can be used as mixture for shrimp pond water and deodorant at chicken farm. The limestone is processed by burning for several hours. Such burning technique also requires special skills. Most residents pursue the limestone processing because it has higher economic value than the unprocessed limestone. Miners and people processing the limestone are aware of the limestone layer will run out in the long run. SINGAPORE - Officials sprayed insecticide and cleared drains of stagnant water in residential areas of Singapore at high risk of further Zika infections on Monday after 41 locally transmitted cases were confirmed in the city state. Workers wearing fumigation masks traveled methodically through high-rise public housing estates in seven separate areas of the island, inspecting plant pots closely as they sprayed insecticide via thermal fogging machines. The health ministry on Saturday confirmed Singapore’s first locallytransmitted case of Zika, with the tally rising to 41 just a day later. All of the infected people were either residents of the Aljunied district or workers at a construction site owned by GuocoLand in the area. “We expect to identify more positive cases,” the ministry said on Monday in its latest update on the outbreak. “Given that the majority of Zika cases are asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic, and mosquitoes in the affected areas may already have been infected, isolation of positive cases may have limited effect to managing

the spread,” it added. Singapore, a major regional financial center and busy transit hub, which maintains a constant vigil against the mosquito-borne dengue virus, reported its first case of the Zika virus in May, brought in by a middleaged man who had been to Brazil. GuocoLand, which is headquartered in Singapore and has developments across Asia, was ordered on Saturday to stop work on the building site where 36 of the infected people worked. It will remain closed until the company rectifies the conditions that allowed mosquitoes to breed and steps up preventative measures, the health ministry said. The Zika virus, carried by mosquitoes, was detected in Brazil last year and has since spread across the Americas. It poses a risk to pregnant women because it can cause severe birth defects. It has been linked in Brazil to more than 1,600 cases of

microcephaly, where babies are born with abnormally small heads and brains. The World Health Organization said on Sunday it did not know “which lineage of Zika is circulating” in Singapore or “what the level of population immunity is to this lineage of Zika in Asia.” Singapore’s health ministry said some 19 mosquito breeding habitats were detected and destroyed in its first sweep of the Aljunied area on Sunday when it fumigated around a third of the 6,000 homes. “I feel afraid,” said Ng Kai Yee, an 18-year-old female student who lives near the construction site believed to be a source of the outbreak. “I heard quite a lot about how harmful Zika virus is to girls, especially pregnant women.” Authorities have urged those living and working in the risk areas, especially pregnant women, to monitor their health and seek medical attention if they are unwell. MANILA - Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday promised rewards running to tens of thousands of dollars for information leading to the capture of police officers protecting drug syndicates and warned corrupt officials they would face “a day of reckoning”. In a National Heroes Day speech, Duterte said there would be no let-up in a “war on drugs” in which - according to police figures more than 1,900 people have been killed since he came to power two months ago. Police say the toll of about 36 people a day is a result of drug dealers resisting arrest or gang feuds. Duterte railed against critics who have complained that the poor who trade drugs to make a living are being targeted by the police, but added that army generals, city mayors, governors and police involved in the drug trade must also be stopped. “I consider the fight against drugs a war, there is a crisis in this country, it is drugs ... it has infected every nook and corner,” he said in the speech to retired and serving soldiers, government officials and foreign diplomats. Singling out corrupt policemen known as “ninjas”, who take payoffs from drug lords, Duterte said he was placing a 2 million peso ($43,000) bounty on their heads, telling their colleagues to “squeal on your friends”. Duterte, who won a May election on a promise to wipe out drugs and dealers, last month named about 160 officials, judges, police and soldiers who he said were protecting drug traffickers or selling drugs in their communities. The United States, a close ally of the Philippines, said last week it was “deeply concerned” about the reports of extra-judicial drug killings and it urged Duterte’s government to ensure that law-enforcement efforts “comply with its human rights obligation”. BUSINESS New tans, same old “polycrisis” as Europe’s summer ends

BRUSSELS - The European Union grinds back into action this week after its August break, still dazed by Britain’s midsummer vote to quit the EU and facing much the same “polycrisis” as a year ago: a mass of refugees, a fragile economy, hostile Russians and, yes, those Brits, now more awkward than ever. When President Jean-Claude Juncker makes his annual State of the Union address to Parliament in Strasbourg on Sept. 14, he might easily repeat last year’s warning: the EU had a “last chance” to save itself from a tide of centrifugal nationalisms. Last week, the EU’s remaining Big Three -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Francois Hollande and their host, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi -- felt they needed to renew their vows at the wellspring of the union, the island of Ventotene, where in 1941 prisoners of Mussolini wrote a manifesto for a united Europe. That they met on the deck of the aircraft carrier Garibaldi reinforced the sense of beleaguered leaders rallying to the EU’s defence as they contemplated an obstacle-strewn political calendar for the year ahead. The EU leaders are first preparing for a summit on Sept. 16 in Bratislava -- without Britain -- that aims to sketch out a post-Brexit future for the Union. On Oct. 2, Hungary’s right-wing prime minister, Viktor Orban, is set to deliver another slap to Brussels: a largely symbolic referendum to reject an EU quota system for relocating refugees among member states -- a scheme Juncker invested much capital in a year ago, but which has barely got off the ground. TRUMP On Nov. 8, Orban is hoping for victory for a man he calls the “valiant” Donald Trump in the U.S. presidential election. Few of Orban’s EU peers are so enthusiastic. They see Trump as a disruptive maverick whose endorsement of and by Brexiteer-in-chief Nigel Farage marks him as no friend of the Union. A Trump win could snap a transatlantic coalition on Russia that is already fraying in Europe, where governments from Paris to Bratislava are seeking a review of Ukrainerelated sanctions when measures expire at year’s end. Trump might also inject a new dose of post-Brexit uncertainty for world trade. At home, all the Big Three leaders face their own electoral challenges from eurosceptics. It starts with Renzi, today trying to persuade Italians he has the youthful energy for rebuilding after the latest earthquake in the Apennines, unlike the scandal-tainted Silvio Berlusconi at L’Aquila in 2009, when more than 300 people died.

HARDBALL Such threats to domestic survival have often spurred leaders to take potshots at Brussels -- even if only the British have taken it to the length of turning most voters against the EU entirely. But even if little has changed in Brus-

sels since last summer, optimists might see reason to hope for more unity now. While rows go on about how, indeed whether, EU states should share out the burden of asylum-seekers stranded in Greece and Italy, what is new is how few are arriving, at least in Greece. Rights groups were outraged this year by hard-nosed deals with non-EU Balkan states to bar the routes north from Greece and with Turkey to stop Syrian refugees reaching Greece in the first place. But those deals did slash the numbers arriving. It’s something EU officials find hard to boast of. Many admit privately to unease at policies that, along with efforts to pay African governments to stop people setting off for Italy, sit uncomfortably with the Union’s lofty humanitarian ideals. But look again at Merkel, Hollande and Renzi on the Garibaldi, flagship of an EU mission off Libya that is part rescue operation and military deterrent against people smugglers, and a slightly different image of today’s EU emerges. EU ARMY All three spoke of Europe getting tougher and more cohesive on security. It is the kind of language that may resonate with sceptical voters dissatisfied with Europe’s struggle to

thrive in a globalising world and with the likes of Orban and other eastern leaders alarmed by Merkel’s earlier open-door policy. Relieved of the need to keep Britons from bolting, Juncker wrung howls of outrage last week from London’s europhobic press when he called national borders “the worst invention ever”. He also renewed his call for a “European army”, which was long just a pipe dream for the Luxemburger as long as Britain had a veto. The past few days have seen Merkel and a succession of other leaders she has met, including Orban, echo such hopes of joint military structures, indicating one area where EU integration may now forge ahead in response to the British departure. That still leaves a host of issues dividing European leaders in the coming year: whether to be nice or nasty to Britain once it decides to open negotiations; how to shore up weaknesses in the economic cooperation that underpins the euro; how far to ease sanctions in the hope of better ties with Moscow. Consensus will be a tall order. Merkel, standing on the deck of the Garibaldi, cited security, investment and youth opportunities as three priorities for a post-Brexit new start for a Europe united and strong. But, she warned: “Danger exists, of fragmentation, of selfishness, of retreating into ourselves.”(rtr)

Indonesia steps up fire response as haze blankets Singapore

JAKARTA — Six Indonesian provinces have declared states of emergency as forest fires blanketed a swath of Southeast Asia in a smoky haze.

Singapore’s air quality deteriorated to unhealthy levels on Friday as winds blew smoke from fires on Sumatra, where millions of people are already affected by haze, across the city-state and into southern Malaysia. The number of hotspots detected in Sumatra and Borneo by weather satellites has increased in the past month though they are below levels last year when massive fires in Indonesia caused a regional crisis. Singapore’s three-hour air pollution index was at 157 by late afternoon, after peaking at 215. Its environment agency doesn’t give a health warning with the limited duration index, but on a 24-hour basis it says levels above 100 are unhealthy and above 200 very unhealthy. “The smell of smoke woke me up. I thought something was burning outside,” said Singaporean copywriter Lim Jia Ying, who put on a mask for her commute to work. “I’m having a cough and it’s getting worse. JAKARTA - A knife-wielding Indonesian teen who tried to attack a priest at a church during a Sunday service was “obsessed” with extremist group Islamic State, a senior minister said on Monday. Indonesian authorities are increasingly worried about a resurgence in radicalism in the world’s largest Muslim-majority country, driven in part by a new generation of jihadis inspired by Islamic State (IS). “From the cellphone that was seized by security forces, this youth was obsessed with Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi,”

Chief Security Minister Wiranto told reporters, referring to the leader of the Middle Eastern militant group. Wiranto, who goes by one name, said a note was found in the attacker’s backpack that said “I love al-Baghdadi” but added the suspect had no known links to existing militant networks. There were no serious casualties in the latest attempted attack, which happened in a church in Medan, northern Sumatra. Police said the attacker had attempted to stab the priest, who suffered minor injuries, and detonate a crude home-made bomb but failed after being

restrained by other worshippers. The suspect, identified as 17-yearold Ivan Armadi is under interrogation. Police seized bomb-making materials from his home after the attack and said he had learned to assemble a bomb through online research. Three students arrested on charges of possessing hashish

MAKASAR - The Makassar city police arrested three students on Saturday on charge of possessing four kilograms of hashish. The suspects, identified by their initials as AO, AR and AN, were arrested in Bukit Manggala Permai housing complex while receiving the contraband sent from Aceh province through a courier service, the chief of the Makassar city police, Senior Commissioner Rusdi Hartono, said. He disclosed that the hashish was wrapped in milk cardboard packs along with coffee powder to overcome the aroma of dried narcotic during delivery. However, the police found out the modus operandi after receiving information from the National Police Headquarters in Jakarta that there would be a delivery of hashish to Makassar from Aceh, he added. “There were four packages of dried hashish wrapped in milk cardboard packs and kept there with the help of duct tape. To cheat the officers, coffee powder was sprinkled over the hashish so that it merely smelt of coffee,” he explained. Previously, the suspects had also received a kilogram of dried hashish from Aceh and trafficked it in Makassar. “Based on their confession, they received consignments of hashish twice, with the first delivery involving one kilogram and the second delivery involving four kilograms,” he informed. The three suspects are being investigated. If found guilty, they may be sentenced to a maximum of 20 years in jail and also fined up to Rp10 billion.(ant)

Options include the ‘neverland’ possibility of simply not invoking Article 50, trying back channel talks to sharpen Britain’s sense of what scenarios are possible, and hopping from an interim outcome to a more permanent post-Brexit landing site. The first option is a non-starter for German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Europe’s most powerful leader and the first one Theresa May met after becoming British prime minister last month.

“The EU can’t accept that,” said a source close to Merkel, who has no desire to see Britain leave but has a pragmatic focus on holding the rest of bloc together, and does not believe Britain will hold a second referendum on its EU membership. Another German government official stressed the strict ban in Berlin on any pre-negotiating: “We won’t talk about substance.” In the absence of formal prenegotiations, the British government must work through the second option: peering through gaps in the clouds of European officialdom to try to work out what its post-Brexit ‘landing’ options are. Such back channelling could help the British work out what is realistic in order to avoid EU negotiators balking at their position, and the clock running down on the two-year deadline. “You can only nail it down if you are in the realm of the possible,” said one European official. Suicide bomber kills 54 in Yemen attack ADEN - A suicide bomber killed at least 54 people when he drove a car bomb into a militia compound in Aden on Monday, the health ministry said, in one of the deadliest attacks claimed by Islamic State in the southern Yemeni port city. The director general of Yemen’s health ministry in Aden, al-Khader Laswar, told Reuters that at least 67 other people were wounded in the attack in the city’s Mansoura district. The militant Islamic State group said in a statement carried by its Amaq news agency one of its suicide bombers carried out the bombing. “Around 60 dead in a martyrdom operation by a fighter from Islamic State targeting a recruitment centre in Aden city,” the statement said, without giving further details. A security source said the attack targeted a school compound where conscripts of the Popular Committees, forces allied to President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, were gathered for breakfast. Witnesses said the suicide bomber entered the compound behind a truck that had brought breakfast for the conscripts, who had queued for the meal. Ambulance sirens wailed throughout the morning as they ferried casualties to a hospital run by medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), which was overwhelmed by the number of casualties. An

Petitenget Temple KUTA - In Banjar Batu Belig, Kerobokan, North Kuta, there is a golden sandy beach on whose shore line stands a temple called Pura Petitenget. The history of the place is not as glamorous as we might imagine from today’s jet set scene. Peti means coven and Tenget means haunted. Petitenget Temple was built in the XV century, and history tells that the place was a wild area full of bushes and huge trees just like an untamed field. The history of Petitenget Temple starts when a priest called Dang Hyang Dwijendra left Serangan island and arrived in a village now known as Kerobokan. In the village he saw a giant size shadow hiding

behind the bushes. He called the shadow to make an appearance: the shadow was Bhuta Ijo, the son of the God of Labuhan Masceti. Bhuta Ijo is a spirit which is believed to have a very scary look. Before the priest left the village he gave Bhuta Ijo a box looking like a coven and told him to guard it. After a while during his meditation in Uluwatu, the priest had a visitor from Kerobokan village who came to him for help. The men from the village told the priest about an area of a land nearby his village which was very mysterious because every time someone tried to enter the land, the person got sick. As a solution, the priest told the man

to built a shrine. So the shrine was built in the area and magically it successfully made the area become more people friendly. There is no creepy atmosphere anymore especially today when the temple is surrounded by villas, hotels and restaurants. Petitenget during day time is sleepier than during night time when the lights come on in every corner of the area. In front of Petitenget Temple is a spacious parking lot guarded by the local security community. The car park is mostly used by visitors who come to the white sandy beach in front of the temple for jogging, sunbathing or just sightseeing. (IBP/net)

Wayne Rooney’s midfield experiment with England is over, with the Manchester United captain set to revert to playing as a deep-lying forward for the national team under new coach Sam Allardyce. Rooney finished last season playing as a central midfielder for United under Louis van Gaal, and played there for England during its European Championship campaign that ended with an embarrassing last-16 loss to Iceland.
