Officials said all eight of the attackers were killed after they raided the hilltop Intercontinental Hotel, whose faded grandeur frequently pays host to Afghan officials and Westerners, late Tuesday. Red tracer bullets arced through the night sky around the hotel and part of the building was left in flames. The state-owned 1960s hotel, which is not part of the global InterContinental chain, was hosting delegates attending an Afghan security conference and a large wedding party when the insurgents struck. Kabul police chief Ayub Salangi said that 10 people, mostly hotel workers, were killed in the raid and three police officers were wounded. Interior ministry spokesman Seddiq Seddiqi identified the dead as two policemen and eight civilians, and said that eight other civilians were wounded. He said the slain hotel workers had been on the first floor and in the lobby at the time of the attack.

Richard Gere in Bali Antara
KUTA - Hollywood actor Richard Gere accompanied by his wife and son, arrived in the Indonesian tourist resort island of Bali from Central Java where he visited and performed religious rites at the Buddhist Borobudur Temple. Gere arrived at Bali‘s Ngurah Rai international airport at 10.05 am local time aboard a Garuda plane which flew him from Yogyakarata‘s Adisutjipto airport. Accompanied by airport officials, Gere took his luggage and directly boarded a hotel car which had been waiting for him. Gere who played in the film “Pretty Women” opposite Julia Roberts was not prepared to be interviewed because he had come to Bali for a vacation.
On Sunday, Richard Gere arrived in Yogyakarta to meditate at the ancient Borobudur temple. He performed “pradaksina”, a ritual where the faithful circle the temple as a token of respect. After offering prayers, he meditated in front of the Borobodur temple`s main stupa. Borobudur, Prambanan, and Ratuboko Tourist Park Manager Purnomo Siswoprasetjo said Richard Gere had canceled a plan to ride an elephant to go around the temple and surrounding villages due to the presence of a big crowd and the media that made him feel uncomfortable. A practicing Buddhist, Richard Gere also skipped a bodhi tree planting ceremony and planned visits to Mendut and Pawon temples.

Coming Religious Day, Beggars Keep Coming Denpasar
Beggars kept filling the roads of Denpasar which has been complained by the public and uncomfortable scene. In responding to this situation, Human Resource, Transmigration and Social Agency for Denpasar City last Monday (27/6) seized 17 people of 5 adults, 10 kids and 2 babies who were around at night time such as at Tohpati, Mahendradata Street, Diponegoro Street, in front of Matahari Department Store, Teuku Umar Six Cross ways (simpang enam). “Before finding them we have done sweeping to locations where they might be and what time are they out, if there are any organisers who put them there by directing our staffs wearing casual clothes so our raid won’t be a waste,” Head of the Agency, Made Erwin Suryadarma Sena, SE, MSi, explained accompanied by Head of Social Rehabilitation Section, Ketut Likub. After seized they were given to Bali province Social Agency house to be given guidance. The Agency admitted to have been overwhelmed in seizing them especially the kids as they usually would run away to escape. It was found they were from 3 places Trunyan, Muntigunung and
Pedahan. What’s more one boy Wayan Dadap (11) who’s still in year 4 also joined this operation. Another one is mother Wayan Sukeh from Pedahan with her 3 months old baby seized in Tohpati. When asked why she did it she explained she has no money to hold a three months cer-
emony for her baby and also for the coming religious days. It is known that since January 2011 until this June the number of seized beggars reached 130 people which 67 from Munti Gunung, 28 from Pedahan and 35 from Trunyan.
Almost Clash, House Execution Failed
IDR 2 Billion House For IDR 28 Million Debt Denpasar (Bali Post)-
The house execution done by Denpasar District Court in Komodo Street No. 26 last Monday (27/6) almost ended in a clash as the house owner did not want its house to be taken forcedly and blocked the workers from getting their items which one of them held a crescent. The house worth IDR 2 billion was said to be a debt of Wicaksana to Ni Ketut Sumiasih that’s only IDR 28 million and according to the Wicaksana’s family the court’s decision was unfair. According to Hadi Wijaya, Wicaksana’s son, the case has been going for a long time taking place back in 1987 where at that time his uncle, Putu Hadi Kusuma, borrowed IDR 22 million from PT. Borsumij Wehry Indonesia Company yet it was not paid
back and gave the certificate to his brother in law, Wicaksana, who owns the house. The certificate was then given to Sumiasih which then paid the debt as agreed IDR 28 million by Hadi Wijaya. Yet later on Sumiasih made a power of sale deed where it was signed by Wicaksana. “My father was old and did not understand law and just signed it straight away,” Wijaya explained. Then there was another agreement letter between them where if the house was sold then it will be cut as the unpaid debt and the rest is given back which so Wicaksana finished it in a family way and agreed to pay IDR 45 million as the debt kept increasing with interest. Yet when about to be paid, Sumiasih asked for IDR 75 million and declined the given money. Wicaksana
family asked to go back to the first agreement yet nothing was done which was then brought to court and until it’s appeal is still decline. It was then decided the house is owned by Sumiasih. Due to that, Wijaya and family denied to be moved out forcedly and asked for an at least three months extension. The house is still being lived by the family including an elderly woman on her wheelchair who keeps being in front of the house during the execution. “Look at her, don’t you have a heart?” Wijaya shouted to the court workers. As Sumiasih wasn’t seen in the scene, through Sumiasih’s legal counsellor, it was stated the family was given two months to pack and go. “Where are we going to go,” Wijaya questioned. (kmb)
Landslide, Two Families Isolated Gianyar (Bali Post) –
Monday’s (27/6) heavy rain has caused a landslide in the border of Demungan River, Lebih Village, Gianyar where it caused a public made road eroded causing two families at Banjar Lebih Duur Kaja isolated. Families of I Wayan Nada and I Wayan Warda lives across the other
residents and so they have to go through the river to get to. For that they created a way fit for a motorbike that could connect their houses which also used by farmers in Subak Purna Jaya and Juwet. With the side of the road eroded 25 meters deep, residents have to go through residents houses to get to the bridge. According to Lebih Village Head
Wayan Gede Pradnyana, the disaster has been reported to the Gianyar Regional Disaster Management Board and it is hoped government will help this problem. Karangasem Hardy’s Employee Robbery Cause Half Billion Rupiah Loss Amlapura (Bali Post) –
From 2007 until March 2011, Hardy’s Karangasem has experienced a loss of IDR 562 million due to its employees own robbery which one of them is accused I Gusti Edy Guruh, S.E. (33) who last Monday (27/6) was trialled for smuggling Hardy’s money, as stated by Public Prosecutor Ketut Kasna Dedy, S.H. Right now Karangasem police are still investigating other accused. In the reading of the conviction letter, witness official of Denpasar Hardy’s (central) I Ketut Ageng (28) stated in 2007 he was told by his leader including accused Guruh to sell items outside the supermarket where potential items that did not get its target inside will be planned to sell outside which he admitted did not know it was illegal or not. “My leader Guruh was the Head of Gross Division with witness I Ketut Budi Sastrawan, SH,” he explained. According to Ageng, after the finance department was close and he was going home, Budi Sastrawan once gave him IDR 12 million a result of a selling to be passed to accused, Guruh. This was done so the selling income did not go to the finance department. When checked by finance, the employee said did not get it from accused yet accused tell them not to get into his business as it is his responsibility. Yet in March 2011, an auditor from central Hardys came to audit Hardys Karangasem and found many misusing and smuggling of the company’s money which part of it is Guruh’s (IDR 12 million). For that the management wants Guruh to be legally processed yet he was gone before that which so he was captured since 30th April. For the conviction Guruh through his legal counsellor I Gede Bimanatara Putra, SH, confirmed that the letter is true. Dozens State Junior High School Damaged Agency Overwhelmed by Proposals Negara (Bali Post) –
Not only the elementary schools in Jembrana that got damaged especially teachers’ dormitories, dozens of junior high schools (SMP) from Pekutatan to Melaya are also damaged and so dozens of proposals for repairing comes in to Jembrana Education, Youth and Sports Agency. As what’s seen last Monday (28/6) around 20 proposals, 13 from state and 7 from private junior high schools, are asking for their facilities such as building and class rooms to be fixed or improved. Pekutatan SMP 1 and SMP 2 stated lab, library and teacher office severely damaged, in Melaya SMP 2, SMP 4 and SMP 5 has its UKS and year 3 class damaged, and in Negara SMP 1, SMP 2, SMP 3 and SMP 4 were also asking for help where SMP 3 has two class rooms severely damaged and other two lightly damaged. Meanwhile in Mendoyo, SMP 1, SMP 3, SMP 4 and SMP 5 had some of their class rooms severely damaged also the lab and creativity room. Head of the Agency, Nengah Alit, stated to fix the elementary and junior high the government will use Special Allocation Budget like last year but it won’t be enough. “It is not possible to take it from the Regional’s Budget and Expenses as it is not enough so we will data all these damages and will send a proposal to the central,” he explained. For now SMP 1 Negara, SMP 2 Mendoyo, SMP 4 Negara and SMP 2 Pekutatan will be prioritised which will be surveyed first. “If there is a severe damaged school will ask Agency for help. To anticipate flooding on Jalan Antasura
Proposed to make storm drain to Ayung River Denpasar (Bali Post)—
Flood disaster afflicting a number of residents of Pengukuh and Punduh Kulit Hamlet, Peguyangan Kaja on Jalan Antasura on Monday (Jun 26) should immediately be resolved. Without appropriate solution, it was feared to cause similar cases engulfing residents of those hamlets. It was triggered by the progressively narrowing open space and waterways had been closed by several buildings. A legislator in Denpasar House from the local hamlet, I Ketut Nuada, Wednesday (Jun 29) expected any appropriate actions from relevant agencies to anticipate the threat of flooding in the future. At least, he said, the flooding should be resolved by making permanent storm drain that could stream the runoff at location when it rained. One of the solutions considered very appropriate to reduce the threat of flooding in the region was by making a storm drain to Ayung River. The storm drain could be made starting from the north of Warung Mina, southwards and then eastwards of SD 2 Peguyangan primary school. “By the storm drain, stagnant water in the north of Warung Mina can be
streamed,” he said. Nuada said the flooding was the first time after conversion of farmland in the south of the flooding location. Before establishment of the buildings, the water could flow to the south and was absorbed in the paddy fields where the Warung Mina was located. “Existence of some buildings should be followed up by making storm drain to stream the water coming from the north,” said the member of Commission D of Denpasar House. As reported previously, the flooding hitting Peguyangan Kaja and Peguyangan Kangin swamped at least 18 homes. Data of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Denpasar mentioned that two homes at Peguyangan Kangin were
submerged. They belonged to Gede Adnyana and Putu Gede Suarja Putra. Meanwhile, 16 other homes located at Punduh Kulit Hamlet, Peguyangan Kaja. Those homes belonged to Nyoman Patri, Wayan Wardana, Nyoman Tahen, Made Candra, Ketut Dira, Nyoman Dana, Made Winata, Sukarya, Nyoman Metra, Nyoman Sudiana, Nengah Suta, Made Weca, Nengah Sita, Nengah Teka, Nyoman Prana and Ketut Santru. Meanwhile, the Head of BPBD Denpasar, I Made Sudhana Satrigraha, said the flooding at Peguyangan Kaja, chiefly at Punduh Kulit, happened regularly. Prembon Mask in BAF 2011
For unity of archipelago, Kebo Taruna willing to sacrifice SINCE the 33rd Bali Arts Festival (BAF) 2011 was held, Balinese dancers and gamelan players had performed a number of significant art compositions. When appreciated carefully, the dance, gamelan music and visual arts showed off actually retained a lot of interpretable philosophies. In other words, the spectacles presented contained moral messages of life. On that account, BAF as a medium to explore, develop and preserve Balinese culture deserved a good appreciation. Through BAF, the arts that formerly existed in the midst of society could be reconstructed. Meanwhile, the arts that had been familiar among older generation could be passed on to young generations of Bali at present and in the future. One of the arts compositions containing full of guidance was Prembon Mask. In BAF 2011 this year, the art of masks also obtained a pretty good portion through a parade. On that account, each envoy of regency/city came to perform the arts of Prembon Mask. As last Friday (Jun 24), Gianyar Regency represented by Taruna Mekar mask troupe from Kebon Hamlet, Singapadu, featured the perfor-
mance impressively at Ratna Kanda Stage, Bali Art Center. The show played by Nyoman Budiartha, Sang Putu Sanjaya, Wayan Dana, Wayan Balik, Made Swatama, Ni Made Astari and Kadek Darmanti entitled Kebo Taruna. It was directed by I Ketut Kodi, while its gamelan music was composed by I Wayan Darya and the troupe was led by I Ketut Budiyana. On that occasion, the performance narrated about the sacrifice of a monumental figure Kebo Taruna who was also known as Kebo Iwa or Kebo Mayura. It was depicted that to realize the Palapa Oath, namely uniting the archipelago under the administration of Majapahit, Gajah Mada attempted to conquer one by one of the existing kingdoms, where one of them was Bali Dwipa. At that time, Bali Dwipa kingdom was led by the King of Bedulu with title Astasura Ratna Bumi Banten. In running his administration, the king was able to embrace 11 mighty figures of Bali, one of which was Ki Kebo Taruna from Blahbatuh. He was immensely powerful like a beam of Lord Brahma and Mount Lempuyang.
Having received a blessing from the King of Majapahit, Sri Raja Haji Kalagemet, Gajah Mada left for Bali to ask for permission so that Ki Kebo Taruna could be allowed to go to Java Island as he would be married with a princess. He would be matched with Princess of Maya named Gusti Ayu Lemahtulis. Without consideration, the King of Bali approved the application. Kebo Taruna was very pleased to uphold the commandment of King Bedamuka because no woman was commensurate with the greatness and strength of Kebo. After saying goodbye to the King, Kebo Iwa departed to Majapahit and made his time to say prayers in Uluwatu Temple. In the temple, Kebo Iwa received a grace from the lord in the form of gemstone emitting a red light. From the temple, Kebo Iwa resumed his journey to Majapahit, and had a stopover or took a rest on the southern coast of Tabanan. When having a rest, Kebo Taruna shed tears sadly because he imagined the defeat of Bali Island due to enemy’s attack. To commemorate the moment, the place was then named Soka Beach meaning sad. (lun)

Riddles in BAF sharpen intelligence and make laughter IT’S unnecessary to be a comedian to be able to make spectators laugh. This was proved by the appearance of elementary school children from all regencies/city across Bali in the competition of macecimpedan (riddling) at Ayodya Stage, Bali Art Center, Tuesday (Jun 28). It was very absorbing and good to watch because it could enrich the perspective and make visitors of Bali Arts Festival (BAF) 2011 laugh. The competition was divided into three rounds, namely preliminary, semifinal and final round. Each team consisted of two participants. They were provided a minute to think about the answer to question given by the opponent. Interestingly, the time was not only taken advantage to think, but also to taunt each other, hit each other and have argument. Ultimately, Bangli and Klungkung Regency could achieve final round. The competition lasted attractively because both teams were attacking each other and their riddles were very complicated until causing viewers to frown. Klungkung was represented by two sisters comprising Putu Sekar Yuningsih and Made Sari Yuningsih of SDN 2 Semarapura Kangin primary school. Meanwhile, Bangli was represented by Ni Made Ayu Citra Putri Sani and Ni Komang Hartanti of SDN 3 Abuan. Both teams were equally deft and nosy. They mutually taunted while interspersed with fresh humors. It thoroughly drew laughter of the audiences. Moreover, it was guided by a hilarious host. At the end, Bangli managed to conquer its rival by a score of 8-2. “This accomplishment is inseparable from guidance and support extended by our coaches consisting of Nyoman Wanayasa and Nengah Sudiarna. Our headmaster, Made Sarjana, also continuously motivated us,” said Ayu and Hartanti. Competition that was regularly organized in BAF was expected to preserve the Balinese language vocabulary. Besides, it could also sharpen the intellect of participants because riddles contained the elements of logic. Tough mental could also be formed in the presence of an argument over the riddles submitted. Even, they suppressed each other to mentally bring down the opponent. In the meantime, the jury, Ketut Jirnaya, said there were several criteria in the riddle competition, such as they should not refer to modern things, the question had to be expressed in Balinese language, and the question should not be ambiguous or in the sense that one question should have only one answer. Overall, he said, the competition went on flourishingly as expected. “Through this contest, we expect the archaic vocabularies will not come to extinction,” he said. (wid)

By coalescing into the Rwa Bhineda art studio, they presented Gita Shanti and Genjek arts at Angsoka Stage on Tuesday (Jun 28). Their performance aroused the sympathy and received great applause from the audience. From the beginning, the people with disability, largely consisting of the blind, could draw the attention of spectators. Despite with disability, they did not give up at all. Their spirit to preserve Balinese arts and culture should be appreciated. In their appearance at BAF, they presented the Gita Santhi psalmody and Genjek art. Through a solemn and melodious traditional psalmodic song, they invited visitors to make introspection to anticipate a fight due to different opinion. Their performance was resumed with Genjek. They chanted 10 songs telling about their life as itinerant masseur whose income was insufficient to meet daily needs. Essentially, they would like to deliver a message in order government could pay attention to their destiny. Performance of the art studio mostly consisting of people with disabilities, largely the blind, could touch the audience and won a rousing applause from spectators thronging the Angsoka Stage. Director of the art studio, I Made Gde Mandra, said the disabled had a high enthusiasm in art creativity. They were willing to hire a motorcycle taxi and spend money to learn singing. “I am moved by their passion because they can show off superiority in terms of spirit to preserve Balinese art and culture though they are not supported by adequate physical condition. On that account, I am going to continuously nurture and motivate them. Their art spirit should be an inspiration for Balinese young people,” he said. (wid)

Police clash with protesters in Cairo Agence France Presse
Egyptian security forces on Tuesday fired tear gas on protesters in central Cairo after violent clashes that left several injured, a security official told AFP. Ambulances were called in to Tahrir Square, the official said, as television footage showed protesters running and covering their faces apparently from the tear gas. A reporter for Egyptian satellite channel al-Hayat described the scene as “a street war between riot police and protesters.” The trouble started when a group of people stormed a theatre where a memorial service was being held for martyrs of the uprising that toppled president Hosni Mubarak in February, the official said. He said the group then headed to the state TV and were joined
by hundreds who began to throw rocks before heading to Tahrir Square, the epicentre of protests that ousted Mubarak. But activists said the families of the victims had been denied entry to the memorial in Cairo and were beaten by police. “After being denied entry .... clashes erupted between protesters and security guards at the theatre. The police showed up and started beating the families of martyrs,” pro-democracy activist Arabawy wrote on his blog. Witnesses told AFP that buses unloaded young men armed with sticks and knives, accusing remnants of the old regime of stirring chaos. When protests erupted on January 25 to demand Mubarak’s ouster, the veteran leader’s loyalists used hired thugs to beat back protesters.

The remarks came as Iran conducted a second day of large-scale military maneuvers, part of 10 days of war games that are the country’s latest show of force amid a standoff with the West over Iran’s disputed nuclear program. Hajizadeh said Tehran’s arsenal
already boasts missiles with a range of about 1,250 miles (2,000 kilometers) that were specifically designed for Israel and U.S. targets. The two missiles in Iran’s possession that have such a range are the Shahab-3 and the Sajjil. “There is no threat from any country to us other than the U.S. and the Zionist regime,” Hajizadeh was quoted as saying by the semiofficial Fars news agency. “The range of our missiles has been de-
signed on the basis of the distance to the Zionist regime and the U.S. bases in the Persian Gulf region.” Hajizadeh said Iran “possesses the technology” to manufacture missiles with a range greater than 1,250 miles, but said “we have no intention to produce such missiles.” He did not elaborate. In Israel, Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor denounced Hajizadeh’s remarks. “This new Iranian bragging demonstrates once again the aggressive policies of the ayatollahs’ regime,” Palmor said. “Not that we had any doubts prior to this statement. But this renewed threat makes it obvious why Iran is the No. 1 threat to this whole region and beyond.”

CARACAS - Supporters of Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez hailed the release of new footage of the socialist leader as evidence he was recovering from surgery in Cuba despite speculation he may have cancer.Just as rumors about Chavez’s disappearance from public view since the June 10 operation were reaching a crescendo, both governments put out video and photographs of him walking and chatting with revolutionary leader Fidel Castro. “He’s fine, you see?” said Eva Golinger, a lawyer who is a vociferous Chavez fan. The images shown on Tuesday night do not disprove the most extreme rumor — that Chavez has prostate cancer — but they give weight to the official
line that he is simply recovering from a painful operation to remove a pelvic abscess. Officials are hoping the 56-yearold will be back for July 5 when Venezuela hosts regional heads of state. The summit on Margarita island is timed to coincide with the 200th anniversary of Venezuela’s independence from Spain. “Let these images serve to bring peace to the people of Venezuela regarding the health of President Chavez,” his gleeful-looking Communications Minister Andres Izarra said, showing the images againand-again on Venezuelan state TV. There were suggestions late on Tuesday that the July 5 summit might be postponed, with one state media employee telling Reuters their coverage plans had been put on hold after word that the presi-

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

More flooding woes along the Missouri, Souris rivers Reuters
OMAHA, Neb - Missouri River floodwaters lapped at a nuclear power plant north of Omaha, Nebraska, on Tuesday and have cracked more defenses downstream after weeks of sustained pressure on levees running hundreds of miles. And in Minot, North Dakota’s fourth largest city, the roughly 12,000 displaced residents watched Souris River flooding slowly recede and began to look toward recovery. Up and down the Missouri River from North Dakota to Missouri, residents on Tuesday said they were just plain tired — tired of sandbags, tired of water, tired of worrying. “We’ve just got water. And, it’s not going away,” said Tony Mangan, 50, whose family has lived in the South Dakota river town and capital of Pierre, since 1987. “You sense there is a weariness out there. People are tired.” Flood defenses have protected downtown Pierre. Griffin Park and Steamboat Park at the river’s edge have flooded, with water running over the amphitheater main stage at Steamboat Park. Across from Yankton, South Dakota, Don Edwards said he has spent thousands of dollars on sandbags and rock material known as rip-rap to keep his Murdo’s Aten Resort eatery open in Nebraska barely three miles downstream from Gavins Point Dam. “The river is about 2 feet below the deck,” Edwards said of the restaurant’s wooden deck overlooking the Missouri River. “Normally it’s about 12-15 feet below the deck.” “If it comes up any more, we are all in trouble.” Several inches of rain over the
weekend caused storm sewer backups in Omaha and across the Missouri River in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Some businesses and residents were forced out on the east side of Omaha temporarily. Federal officials said Tuesday they were adding blankets to bolster 2.1 miles of levee in Council Bluffs where they had found seepage or sand boils on a dozen sections. MORE LEVEE BREACHES At the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Power Station north of Omaha, which has been shut since April for maintenance, officials expect to replace by the end of next week an inflatable barrier that deflated on Sunday sending a rush of water toward the plant. The breach temporarily interrupted some electrical power but emergency generators restored power later that day and there was no threat to sensitive facilities. Although the plant is surrounded by water, its flood defenses have nearly eight feet of space from current river levels, officials have said. JAKARTA - Marine affairs and Fisheries Minister Fadel Muhammad said the number of poor fishermen has reached 7.87 million, 25.14 percent of the total Indonesian poor population (30.02 million). Speaking at Provincial Legislative Assembly (DPRD) plenary meeting to discuss Regional Regulation Draft (Raperda) on cigarettes-free areas, the governor reminded smokers in the province to smoke outside the buildings or in the open air.
“We ask smokers to smoke in designated places. This is all aimed for our common health,” Pastika said, adding that smoking habit without the constraint has become an accepted social norm for years. He said that if there was any attempt to avoid the cigarette smoke of others, it was more generally because of impaired convenience rather than the awareness of threatening health risks. The governor said permissive attitude towards smoking in any place without any restricting rules has made the smokers feel entitled to smoke anywhere without realizing that they have violated the rights of others. “Most of the active smokers actually do not care if their cigarette smoke harms the non-smokers be-
cause for years they have been spoiled by the environment to smoke anywhere and any place as they wish,” the governor said. Therefore he asserted that the government was obliged to establish an effective regulation to protect the non-smoking community. He said the government’s seriousness could be seen from the continuous campaigns in cooperation with the managers of public places and workplaces to step up the people’s understanding of the dangers of smoking. Mangku Pastika pointed out that no-smoking areas covered healthcare facilities, places of learning and teaching or schools, places of worship, public transportation, work places, and bus stations.

Balinese Culture Fishermen of Tejakula Preserve Coral Reefs Apparently the importance of coral reefs to the preservation of marine biota has been realized by fisherman groups in Buleleng Regency. When the coral reefs in the waters of Tejakula Village, Tejakula Subdistrict, were damaged, a group of fishermen in the village set to take action by strictly overseeing the reef theft and monitoring the behavior of fishermen who used to catch fish by means of potassium cyanide and fish bombs. As coral reefs in the other water territory of Indonesia, the coral reefs in the coastal areas of Tejakula Village have long suffered from severe damage. It is caused by the behavior of fishermen catching fish by using chemicals such as potassium cyanide. More seriously, some others caught fish by fish bombs and stole coral reefs for lime materials. The damage occurred to the underwater environment in Tejakula reached its peak in 1999. But since then, people in the coastal areas, especially fishermen, began to realize. If the sea is not saved, their life will be threatened because so far their life indeed relies on the profession of catching consumption fish or ornamental fish. That’s why they start doing preservation. Secretary of Baruna Beratha Fisherman Group, Tejakula Village, Nyoman Darmawan, said the impact of damaged coral reefs made the catching fish population
fall dramatically. Fish food (plankton) living in the coral reefs increasingly reduced, so that fish population also reduced. Under these conditions, it was difficult to increase the catch of fishermen every day. “Fish population will diminish because small fishes living around the coral reefs no longer survive,” he said. According to Darmawan, since the fish famine condition local fishermen began to realize if the coral reefs had been damaged. Since then, fishermen independently performed the maintenance and preservation to the remaining coral reefs that could be saved. The group began to oversee the activities of fishermen catching fish by chemicals. Even, they did not hesitate to arrest the residents who were proved to catch fish by chemicals and apprehend those who attempted to steal the coral reefs. With strict supervision, the damage to coral reefs gradually reduced. Nevertheless, the extent of coral reefs reaching approximately 1.3 square kilometers was still damaged so far. By limited equipment, the fishermen found difficulty to carry out the replacement techniques to the dead coral reefs. Later on, they asked a support to village apparatus in order the preservation efforts could be facilitated by government or donors. “We have been able to maintain the coral reefs, but we cannot restore
the dead ones,” he said. Armed with persistence of the village apparatus and local fisherman group, they established the Marine Protection Areas (DPL) at Tejakula Village. Management of the institution had been entrusted to the fisherman group. The group had the tasks to protect the fishing area from the use of chemicals and provide the techniques to restore the damaged coral reefs. Local government through the Buleleng Marine Fisheries (Diskanla) also provided assistance in the form of seven Hexadom (artificial reefs). “We are given some artificial reefs and hopefully they could gradually replace the dead ones,” he explained. Persistence of fishermen to restore the coral reefs increasingly drew more attention from the circle of tourism businesspeople in Tejakula. They also had interest in the coast and then helped the fishermen restore the coral reefs. Even, one of the businessmen in Tejakula provided with artificial reefs. The entrepreneur was in partnership with the Reef Check non-government organization to help local fishermen restore the coral reefs. “By stipulation as marine protection area and supported by government, employers and NGOs, we have confidence if coral reefs here will recover by degrees. So far we have often escorted guests to snorkel around the marine protection area while carrying out the maintenance of coral reefs,” explained Darmika. (BTN/kmb)

INGREDIENTS: 1 whole duck, weigh about 2 kg (4 ½ lb) 18 shallots, peeled, cut in half, and sliced 6 cloves garlic, peeled, cut in half, & sliced 3 stalks lemon grass, finely sliced 5 fragrant lime leaves, finely sliced 6 candlenuts, chopped 5 cm (2 in), ginger, peeled and chopped 8 cm (3in) fresh turmeric, peeled, chopped 8 cm (3in) kencur root, peeled, chopped 1 tsp black peppercorns, crushed 5 bird’s-eye chilies, slices 1 tsp coriander seeds, crushed 2 tsp dried shrimp paste, roasted and coarsely crushed 1½ tbsp salt 3 tbsp oil Banana leaves, greaseproof paper or aluminum foil for wrapping PREPARATION: Wipe the duck dry and set aside. Combine all ingredients except banana leafs in a bowl and mix well. Rub the duck outside with this mixture and fill the center of the duck with the remainder. Close open duck with satay skewer. Wrap in several layers of banana leaves, greaseproof paper or foil and steam for 50 minutes. Transfer duck to a moderate oven and bake at 180o C (350o F) for 30 minutes. BUSINESS Famed Australia ranch to be sold due to export ban Associated Press Writer
CANBERRA — Australia’s best-known Outback cattle ranch has been put on the market by an owner who on Wednesday blamed the country’s ban on livestock exports to Indonesia for destroying her livelihood. The decision to sell iconic Bullo River Station in the Northern Territory is the latest evidence of the economic hardship gripping tropical Australian cattle country since the government announced on June 8 that livestock exports to Indonesia were banned for up to six months because of animal cruelty concerns in Indonesian slaughterhouses. The 40,000-acre (160,000-hectare) family owned property was made famous by matriarch Sara Henderson, who wrote about it in six books including her best-selling autobiography “From Strength to Strength,” published in 1993. It told of her family’s struggle to manage the remote and expansive ranch — known in Australia as a cattle station — after her American-born husband Charlie Henderson died in 1985. Sara Henderson retired from ranching before she died in 2005, aged 68. Her daughter who now owns the ranch, Marlee Ranacher, said Wednesday that the ban was the last straw for her and other ranchers like her in northern Australia. “If there were any way I could change this decision, I would,” Ranacher told Australian Broadcasting Corp. radio of her decision to sell. “I wish for a miracle, but there aren’t many of those around at the moment, and this is definitely the last straw because the government, I believe, is legally and morally negligent to have done what they have done,” she added. Australia is the world’s largest exporter of livestock. Many ranchers rely entirely on the 330 million Australian dollar ($350 million) per year live cattle trade with Indonesia because there are no largescale slaughterhouses in northern Australia — and the southeast market where most Australians live is too distant. Ranacher said her ranch had not sold any cattle since the region’s monsoon season set in October last year. Now in the current dry season when the cattle trade resumes, she had nowhere to send her 8,000 Brahman cattle specifically bred for the Indonesian market. She said she could not afford the diesel fuel needed during the dry season to pump underground water into troughs for the cattle to drink. “I don’t know what else we can do but start shooting them. I can’t stand there and watch them die of thirst,” she said, adding that none had yet died. Ranch salesman Andrew Gray said Bullo River Station was the first ranch in the Northern Territory to be put on the market since the trade ban began and he did not expect other ranchers would sell. “Station owners are really hoping trade recommences at some stage soon, but it’s highly unlikely people would just throw their keys on the counter and walk out,” Gray told The Australian newspaper. He did not immediately return The Associated Press’s call on Wednesday. The government announced on Monday an AU$3 million compensation package for meat industry workers such as cattle truck drivers who had lost income through the trade ban. But Ranacher said no financial help had been offered to the ranch owners. The government wants the cattle industry-owned marketing company Meat and Livestock Australia to provide AU$5 million to feed and water thousands of cattle stranded by the ban. The ban followed gruesome footage broadcast on Australian television that showed cattle in Indonesian slaughterhouses were beaten and took minutes to bleed to death as their throats were repeatedly slashed. The government said the trade would be halted while Australian and Indonesian authorities work to ensure that the exported animals are treated according to World Organization for Animal Health guidelines.

SINGAPORE - Asia’s fast-rising economies set their sights on securing key IMF appointments under newly named chief Christine Lagarde on Wednesday, hopeful she would be the one to make good on oft-heard pledges to swing more power to emerging markets. Lagarde said all the right things on her recent campaign-trail tour of Asia. She acknowledged that countries such as China and India deserve increased IMF voting power commensurate with their growing economic clout, and a fair shot at the emergency lending institution’s top decision-making posts. “Lagarde is a friend of India,” a senior Indian government source said. “We can’t get the IMF managing director’s chair for now but at least India can get some high-level appointments in the IMF during her tenure and we will work toward that.” Lagarde begins her five-year term as managing director of the International Monetary Fund on July 5, and will find herself immediately immersed in efforts to head off a Greek debt default that could spark an international crisis. High on her to-do list within the Fund will be appointing a top leadership which fairly reflects global eco-
nomic influence, and shepherding through an already agreed process to reallocate IMF voting rights to give emerging markets greater say. Lagarde received support from many major Asian economies even though she perpetuates a pattern they despise of Europeans holding the top IMF job. No Asian candidate stepped forward to challenge Lagarde and Mexico’s Agustin Carstens. “Lagarde has been more successful in consensus building to bridge relationships between advanced countries and emerging markets,” Indonesia’s central bank deputy governor Hartadi A. Sarwono told Reuters. She will need those skills for the difficult personnel decisions. The United States is already considering putting forward a Treasury Department official for the No. 2 role, which has traditionally been filled by an American. Breaking with that tradition might
help convince Asian countries that Lagarde is serious about reforming the IMF, although there was no indication that she had made any promises to award the second-in-command role to someone from Asia. Singapore Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam, who also chairs the IMF’s steering committee, said he had spoken to Lagarde about the importance of IMF reforms that “reflect the evolving balance in the global economy and financial system.” Even countries that had backed Lagarde’s challenger, Carstens, pledged their support. Australian Treasurer Wayne Swan said he had worked with Lagarde through the Group of 20 club of rich and emerging countries, and welcomed her appointment. “We’re very happy to see the process concluded so this important institution can continue its work,” Swan said through a spokesman.

That’s our first glimpse of the title character Hanks plays in “Larry Crowne,” a timely tale about a man who makes the best of his lot, even when he’s downsized out of a job during these hard times and must head back to school to build a new future. It’s all about attitude, says Hanks, getting up each day with the thought that there’s action to be had and a party to join into. Hanks, the movie’s
star, director, producer and co-writer, thinks that’s how he’d approach life if he were in Larry’s place rather than one of the biggest stars in the world. “I’d be the gang leader of the common break area. I’d be the guy organizing the piñata parties, stuff like that. Absolutely,” Hanks, 54, says in an interview for “Larry Crowne,” which opens Friday and reunites him with his “Charlie Wilson’s War” costar Julia Roberts. “The concept of putting on a show begins as soon as you wake up in the day,” Hanks says. “And Larry, the theater of his life starts when he goes through those doors, and it’s like, I’m a team leader, and I’m wearing the red Polo” — the store employees’ uniform. “When Larry picks up trash
in the parking lot, that’s the first thing he does, because you’ve got to have a little pride. And I’m a trash picker-upper. What can I tell you?” A former Navy cook who never went to college, Hanks’ Larry is a model worker at U-Mart, the retailer where he’s a perpetual employee of the month. Fifty-something, divorced, with a house worth less than he owes on it, Larry tumbles into an abyss familiar to millions after management lets him go. Larry’s forced to downsize his life, selling things off, struggling to resolve his mortgage mess, and switching over from a gas-guzzling SUV to a fuel-sipping scooter. He lands part-time work at a diner while taking classes at a community college as he seeks to boost his employment prospects. Along the way, he fashions a new life for himself, making friends with a circle of oddball classmates and finding romance with his boozy, disillusioned public-speaking teacher (Roberts).

Review: ‘Transformers’ is another loud bruiser TO his credit, Michael Bay does try to put more human touch into “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” aiming to make up for the clattering mess of overgrown kitchen appliances that duked it out in the franchise’s last installment. Bay went to the far side of the moon and even to planet Vulcan, enlisting John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Mr. Spock in search of the human face of the “Transformers” universe. And he came back with another loud, long, bruising and wearisome onslaught of giant, shape-shifting robots. The human element arises largely from archi-
val footage involving the 1960s moon race, along with images that may disturb younger kids as a succession of screaming, scrambling humans are vaporized by the ‘bots like insects in a bug zapper. In 3-D, too, so you get to wear those clunky glasses for the franchise’s longest movie yet. It really felt like people didn’t matter in 2009’s “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” a mega-blockbuster despite being little more than a turgid assemblage of computer-generated machine parts thrashing about. So Bay and his collaborators set out to show the flesh-and-blood consequences in the war between the benevolent Autobots and their evil
counterparts, the Decepticons. But human consequence in a Bay flick means more shots of Shia LaBeouf bellowing while he and his pals get battered around amid the mayhem. The action sequences drag on and on, and while the stunts and digital imagery are even more dazzling than the visuals of Bay’s first two “Transformers” tales, it all flies by in such frenzy that it remains a challenge to figure out who’s who, which robot is which, and what machines you should be rooting for. It’s a thin line between the idiotically incomprehensible “Revenge of the Fallen” and the merely incomprehensible of “Dark of the Moon.”

Greenland’s ice sheet melted the most it has in over a half century last year, US government scientists said Tuesday in one of a series of “unmistakable” signs of climate change. “The world continues to warm,” the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said in a briefing paper for reporters. “Multiple indicators, same bottom-line conclusion: consistent and unmistakable signal from the top of the atmosphere to the bottom of the oceans.” An annual climate survey, which includes work by scientists from 45 countries, said that ice sheet in Greenland melted at its highest rate since at least 1958, when similar data first became available. Arctic sea ice shrank to its third smallest area on record, while the world’s alpine glaciers shrank for the 20th straight year, the study said. In line with previous studies, the survey said that 2010 was also one
of the hottest years on record. Last year was either tied for the hottest or the second hottest on record, depending on methodology. But all methodologies used showed the temperature to be at least 0.9 degrees Fahrenheit (0.5 Celsius) above the average recorded in the three decades through 1990. The survey noted that 2010 was exceptional for its extreme events, including a deadly heat wave in Russia, floods in Pakistan that displaced more than 20 million people and record snowfall in several US cities. A series of studies have voiced
alarm at the rapid pace of melting in the Arctic Ocean, which could lead to a rise in sea levels that threatens low-lying coastal areas and islands. The Oslo-based Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Program said in May that warming in the Arctic was on track to lift sea levels by up to 5.3 feet (1.6 meters) by 2100, a far steeper jump than predicted a few years ago. Many environmentalists have been disappointed at the pace of diplomacy to fight climate change, with few expecting a major agreement at the next major UN-led talks opening in South Africa in late November. Former US vice president Al Gore recently accused President Barack Obama of failing to show leadership on climate change, saying that poor coverage of the media had given credibility to skeptics of global warming.
HUMANS who dismiss birds as featherweights may revise their opinion when learning of crows which not only can identify the face of someone who is a danger but also teach others about the threat. Intrigued by the behaviour of wild American crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos) on their campus in Seattle, University of Washington scientists explored whether the birds would recall a face associated with a frightening ordeal. The researchers donned the rubber mask of a caveman before trapping, banding and releasing seven crows. Thereafter, researchers wore either this “dangerous” mask or a neutral one — that of former US vice president Dick Cheney — and observed, as they walked along the college paths, how the flock of crows reacted. The “crow magnon” mask prompted the birds into a collective response to a threat. They cawed and screeched, angrily
flapped their wings and flicked their tail to warn of the danger, a behaviour called scolding. But the Cheney mask elicited no response. The team broadened the experiment to four other sites beyond the university, this time using different masks made in latex by a mask maker. The faces were ordinary looking, either male or female, Asian or Caucasian. Forty-one birds were caught and banded. As time passed, the number of birds scolding the “dangerous” face did not decline. Rather, the reverse happened. At the university site, scolding rose from 20 percent of the birds after the banding to an astonishing 60 percent after five years. “At the other sites, we only tested for a half year and there, 20 to 40 percent of crows scolded,” John Marzluff, a professor of wildlife science, said in an email.

The 33-year-old managed Porto last season and has now taken charge of the Premier League club where Mourinho enjoyed three years of unprecedented success before an acrimonious exit in 2007. Inevitably that has led Villas-Boas to be dubbed ‘the miniMourinho’, but his style is far more diplomatic than the brash Mourinho and he refused to emulate his predecessor’s selfaggrandising arrival at Chelsea. While Mourinho used his first press conference at Chelsea manager in 2004 to describe himself as “a special one”, Villas-Boas prefers to work as part of a collective and suggested that if he had to have a label it should be “the group one”. “This is not a oneman show, it is a question of creating empathy and raising ambitions in the players and staff around me,” Villas-Boas said. “I’m just one gear in this big club that wants to be successful every year. The challenge at Chelsea is to win as soon as possible and build a solid platform for the future. “Maybe I should be the called ‘the group one’, I want to group people together to be successful. “My title, I will wait for you guys to give it to me when I am successful. I hope to get a good title in the end.” Despite spending several years working with Mourinho, the pair are no longer on speaking terms after Villas-Boas angered his former boss by quitting his backroom role at Inter to become a boss in his own right at Portuguese minnows Academica de Coimbra in 2009. Even so, Villas-Boas had no hesitation in describing Mourinho’s time at Chelsea as the standard he has to live up to. “It is normal that he is mentioned as part of the history of this club, the trophies you see here have been won by him,” Villas-Boas said. “It is almost as if he is part of this press conference sitting next to me! “Of course you know we dont speak for a long time but there are no hard feelings, just two busy people in football.”

DRESDEN, Germany — For 45 minutes, the Americans were sloppy and slow, looking very much like the inconsistent bunch whose road to Germany was marked by bumps and potholes. Once they took the field for the second half, though, the Americans played with the confidence, creativity and touch around the goal that won them two World Cups and made them the world’s dominant team for much of the last two decades. “We believe we can win this tournament,” Abby Wambach said. Lauren Cheney, making her first start since March, and Rachel Buehler scored in an offensive burst as the Americans beat a young but scrappy North Korea 2-0 on Tuesday. The victory puts the Americans atop Group C going into Saturday’s game against World Cup newcomer Colombia. If the U.S. wins that game and Sweden beats or ties North Korea, the U.S. will be on to the quarterfinals. The Swedes defeated Colombia 1-0 on Tuesday in the other group match. The U.S. wraps up group play July 6 against Sweden. “It’s always easier going forward” with a win, U.S. coach Pia Sundhage said. “We’re happy, two great goals.” For the North Koreans, it was yet another loss to the Americans. This
was the fourth straight World Cup that the teams met in the group stage, and the U.S. has won all but one of the games. As the Americans celebrated on the field, delighting a crowd that was decidedly pro-American, the North Koreans stood just beyond midfield, watching. Afterward, North Korean coach Kim Kwang Min blamed his team’s failings in the second half on a June 8 lightning strike during training in Pyongyang that sent “more than five” players to the hospital. Goalkeeper Hong Myong Hui, four defenders and some of the midfielders were the players most affected, Kim said. “The physicians actually said the players were not capable of playing in the tournament,” he said through an interpreter. “They’re not physically ready for this match, but they had a strong will.” The North Koreans didn’t seem as if anything was amiss, nearly matching the Americans in possession (53 percent to 47 percent) and getting seven shots on goal. HAMBURG, Germany — Wladimir Klitschko believes he is the man to deliver the therapeutic defeat he thinks David Haye needs to become a “better person” after their highly anticipated heavyweight fight on Saturday. The fighters have been swapping threats that perhaps go beyond the often outrageous buildups to fights — both have predicted sending the other to hospital after the bout in Hamburg’s soccer stadium. Haye’s antics seem to have irritated Klitschko, who says Haye needs a reality check and therapy for his big mouth. “My name is Dr. Klitschko. I am a therapist and on July 2 I am going to give you treatment. It is going to be reality rehab. I will knock you out into reality, which will be good for your life. “You will be a better person and have better manners,” Klitschko told Haye, who was sitting next to him at a news conference on Monday. The 35-year-old Klitschko, the IBF, WBO and IBO champion who has a 55-3 record with 49 KOs, has a doctorate degree in sports science. Haye, the 30-year-old WBA champion, appeared unimpressed, neither by Klitschko’s academic nor the boxing record. “This is going to be the most brutal execution of a boxer that you’ve seen for many, many years,” Haye predicted. “I’m going to go out there and absolutely destroy him, really quickly.” The fight has been in the making for more than two years and Haye has used the time to repeatedly mock Wladimir and his older brother Vitali, the WBC champion. He has worn a T-shirt depicting the image of himself holding the severed heads of the Klitschko brothers. Wladimir has promised to make him eat it after the fight. Haye has introduced a game app for smart phones called “David Haye’s Knockout,” with users playing as Haye aims to knock the head off a giant eastern European. Klitschko said he respects Haye as a fighter but not as a person. “You have a certain attitude that is not so good for your life inside and outside the ring,” the Ukrainian said. Haye, a former cruiserweight fighter who has a 25-1 record, with 23 KOs, has called both Klitschko brothers “frauds,” who only fight “little fat puddings who turn up for a pay check.” Klitschko acknowledged that Haye looked superbly fit and confident ahead of the fight. “I am going to get challenged in the ring,” Klitschko said.
WIMBLEDON, England — When Maria Sharapova says her game is getting better and better at Wimbledon, it’s hard to argue. The fifth-seeded Russian, the only quarterfinalist at the All England Club with a Grand Slam title to her name, dominated her match on Centre Court on Tuesday, moving back into the semifinals for the first time since 2006. “I certainly feel like I’ve improved, especially from my second round,” said Sharapova, who beat 24th-seeded Dominika Cibulkova 6-1, 6-1 on another wet day at Wimbledon. “I think that’s really important if you want to get to the later stages, later stage of the second week, as well. “You have to step it up because the matches will only get tougher and you’re going to be playing better players that have won the same amount of matches, as well.” Sharapova won the Wimbledon title in 2004 when she was only 17. She made the semifinals the next two years, but hadn’t been back this far since. To reach a second final, she’ll have to beat German wild-card entry Sabine Lisicki, who reached
her first Grand Slam semifinal by defeating 2007 finalist Marion Bartoli 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-1. In the other semifinal match, fourthseeded Victoria Azarenka will face Petra Kvitova. On Wednesday, the men return to the court with six-time champion Roger Federer up against JoWilfried Tsonga, defending champion Rafael Nadal against Mardy Fish, Novak Djokovic facing 18year-old Australian qualifier Bernard Tomic and Andy Murray versus Feliciano Lopez. Sharapova lost the opening game of her match under the roof on Centre Court, but then won eight straight and never let Cibulkova hold serve again. “It’s been a few years since I got past the fourth round, and now I’m in the semifinals,” said Sharapova, who has not lost a set at this year’s tournament. “So this a great chance for me to take it a step further.” Although Azarenka is the highest seeded player remaining in the
draw at No. 4, Sharapova is the favorite. At 24, the Russian is three years older than the other three semifinalists. Plus, Sharapova won the 2006 U.S. Open and the 2008 Australian Open while Lisicki and Azarenka will be playing in a major semifinal for the first time. “It’s great, the fact that I’ve had the experience of being in those stages. But I haven’t been for a while, so it’s a nice and refreshing feeling to have,” Sharapova said. “I’ve put a lot of work in to get to this stage, but I still feel like, you know, the tournament’s not over. I still have a few more goals left.” The first obstacle will be Lisicki, who was first up under the roof on Centre Court as rain poured down and thunder blared. Despite wasting three match points in the second set, Lisicki held on to become only the second wild-card entry to reach the women’s semifinals at the All England Club and the first German Grand Slam semifinalist since Steffi Graf in 1999.

Dani Pedrosa confirms Mugello return DANI Pedrosa has confirmed that he will return to MotoGP for this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix, six weeks after breaking his collarbone at Le Mans. The Honda rider sustained the injury in a collision with Marco Simoncelli during the French round of the world championship, and then required a second operation to fix a further fragment of bone. “For weeks I’ve been wanting to write that I’m back to competition and I can finally do it,” Pedrosa wrote in his blog for sponsor Repsol. “These weeks have been difficult, but I knew that I had to focus on recovering to climb on the bike in the best possible shape. As I said last week, Mugello was the goal and that’s the only thing I’m
thinking now.” “I’m going to Italy eager to get on the bike, to see what my feelings are and to compete. “Apart from getting on the bike, I also want to see the team again, work with them and try to do things right. At the end of the day we are like a family. You miss them when you don’t compete for so long.” Pedrosa added that he was optimistic he was back to full fitness now, although he would not be totally certain until he was back on the bike. “As for the recovery, the situation has improved a lot since I had my last surgery,” he said. “It seems that we found the problem and the good feeling that I had two days after the operation have been confirmed during the past week. Now I see to see how I feel on the bike.”
Hamilton insists not giving up on title yet Lewis Hamilton has insisted that he remains focused on doing all he can to win the world championship this year, despite having admitted in Valencia on Sunday night that the title fight was all but over. Less than 24 hours after Hamilton suggested that runaway championship leader Sebastian Vettel had ‘pretty much’ guaranteed the title already, the McLaren driver amazingly took a snipe at the media reports of what he had said.
Writing on his Twitter feed, Hamilton said: “To all our supporters, ignore what u read in the papers today. My team will never give up & I WILL NEVER GIVE UP!!!! “Bring on Silverstone, ur support will make a world of difference to us. I’m going to the factory now to do all I can with our team. Lewis.” Hamilton’s annoyance with the media reports of what he said, on the back of a difficult weekend in Valencia, provides further evidence of the frustrations he is feeling at the moment at the dominance of Red Bull Racing. However, speaking to the Press Association, Hamilton said it would be wrong of him to ask McLaren to do any more than it already is - because everyone is pushing to the maximum. “They are doing what they can, working as hard as they can,” said Hamilton. “Can we all do a better job? I can do a better job, they can do a better job, and we can always improve. “But you know, they are on the limit, being pushed as hard as they can. The engineers and people designing things back home are flat out, and sometimes you get it right, sometimes you don’t.
