The future billionaire lived with LOS ANGELES - Oprah Winfrey has thanked fans for their her grandmother until she was six “kind words” after her mother at the age of 83.

Winfrey posted a picture on Instagram of herself and her mother Vernita Lee at a family gathering.

She said: “Thank you all for your kind words and condolences regarding my mother Vernita Lee’s passing. It gives our family great comfort knowing she lived a good life and is now at Peace.”

A family spokesperson said Ms Lee had died at her Milwaukee home on 22 November, the same day as Thanksgiving, and that private funeral services had already been held.

No other details were given.

Ms Lee was a teenager when she gave birth to Winfrey in 1954.

before moving to Milwaukee to join her mother who was working as a maid.

Ms Lee featured on her daughter’s show in 1990, getting a makeover. She is survived by another daughter, Patricia Amanda, and four grandchildren. She had two other children, Jeffrey and Patricia, who died before her. (IBP/net)

Ancient Chinese painting auctioned for almost $60 million

HONG KONG - A nearly 1,000-year-old ink painting by one of China’s greatest literati masters Su Shi fetched US$59.5 million (HK$463,600,000) at auction, Christie’s said Monday. The auction house has described the Song Dynasty artwork created by Su as “one of the world’s rarest Chinese paintings”.

Entitled “Wood and Rock”, the ink-onpaper handscroll depicts a dragon-like old tree with withered branches and a sharp rock resting at its root.

The painting was the most expensive item ever sold in Christie’s Asia, it said.

Su Shi, also known as Su Dongpo, is one of the most important cultural figures in Chinese history and was an esteemed scholar, poet, prose-writer, painter, calligrapher and statesman.

The 185.5cm-long scroll is inscribed with calligraphy and the poems of four important literati of the 11th century in China, and also exhibits the seals of 41 collectors.

“The number of the works securely attributed to him are very few, probably only two or three. They are extremely rare,” Jonathan Stone, deputy chairman for Christie’s Asian art department, said in an earlier preview.

The preliminary crash report from Indonesia’s transport safety agency also took aim at the budget carrier’s poor safety culture, but did not pinpoint a definitive cause of the October 29 accident, which killed all 189 people on board.

A final report is not likely to be filed until next year. The Boeing 737 MAX vanished from radar about 13 minutes after taking off from Jakarta, slamming into the Java Sea moments after pilots had asked to return to the capital.

Investigators said Lion Air kept putting the plane back into service despite repeatedly failing to fix a problem with the airspeed indicator, including on its second-last flight from Bali to Jakarta.

“The plane was no longer airworthy and it should not have kept flying,” Nurcahyo Utomo, aviation head at the National Transport Safety Committee, told reporters.

The findings will heighten concerns there were problems with key systems in one of the world’s newest and most advanced commercial passenger planes.

“But we don’t know yet whether it’s a Boeing or airline issue,” said aviation analyst Gerry Soejatman.

Investigators have previously said the doomed aircraft had problems with its airspeed indicator and angle of attack (AoA) sensors, prompting Boeing to issue a special bulletin telling operators what to do when they face the same situation.

The report confirmed that initial finding, saying the plane’s data recorder detected an issue with the AoA. It also said the plane’s “stick shaker” -- which vibrates the aircraft’s steering wheel-like control yoke to warn of a system malfunction -- was “activated and continued for most of the fight.”

An AoA sensor provides data about the angle at which air is passing over the wings and tells pilots how much lift a plane is getting. The information can be critical in preventing an aircraft from stalling.

The doomed plane’s flight data recorder showed that pilots had repeatedly tried to correct its nose

from pointing down, possibly after erroneous data from AoA sensors was fed into a system that automatically adjusts some of its movements.

- Dubious record Black box data showed the plane also had an airspeed indicator issue on multiple earlier flights, said investigators, who have yet to locate the cockpit voice recorder on the sea floor.

Lion must take steps “to improve the safety culture” and bolster the quality of its flight logs, the transport agency said. “Airlines need to take paperwork seriously,” Soejatman said.

“That didn’t cause the crash, but it can cause other problems in the environment they’re working in.”

Despite a dubious safety record and an avalanche of complaints

over shoddy service, the budget carrier’s parent Lion Air Group has captured half the domestic market in less than 20 years of operation to become Southeast Asia’s biggest airline.

Indonesia’s aviation safety record has improved since its airlines, including national carrier Garuda, were subject to years-long bans from US and European airspace for safety violations, although it has still recorded 40 fatal accidents over the past 15 years.

Provincial govt immediately arranges Besakih sacred area

DENPASAR - Bali provincial government plans to re-arrange the Besakih sacred area. The budget for the arrangement is allocated in 2019. Currently, the arrangement masterplan is still being prepared starting from roads, shops, markets and others. Provincial government will also involve customary villages, temple supporting devotees (pengempon), Karangasem government, and National Road Authority having the authority in the national roads in the region.

“Of course, it is in accordance with the condition of Besakih as a sacred area with the Besakih Temple and as a tourist object. This must be arranged,” said the Head of the Bali Research and Development Agency, I Wayan Wiasthana Ika Putra, in Denpasar, recently.

According to him, there will also be a special place for tourists to see the entire Besakih area. Thus, they do not need to enter into the temple

especially the main mandala (innermost courtyard). In addition, the arrangement also involves parking.

“Parking areas must also be arranged as well as possible to avoid crowded traffic condition when a ceremony is being organized, including daily traffic so that it is good and comfortable,” he explained.

MSMEs of Karangasem have not owned export market yet

AMLAPURA - The players of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) in Karangasem are quite a lot. However, until now the products do not yet have an export market as they can only touch the local market. This was revealed by the Head of Karangasem Cooperative and MSME Agency, Gede Ngurah Yudiantara, on Tuesday (Nov. 27).

are enough tens of thousands of MMSEs in Karangasem. However, so far their products have not reached export market. He stated that actually many people in Karangasem are in business such as Asmat statue makers, ate craft products of Tenganan and others. Uniquely, collection of the Asmat statue produced is finalized in Gianyar, so the craft will be marketed from Gianyar with

Gianyar label.

Aside from the study, in Karangasem there are also MMSEs related to milk pie and snakefruit coffee products. It also includes snakefruit wine. “We need a connection to be able to market the products of the MSMEs to the export market. To that end, we will continuously follow the exhibitions available later.

Scientist’s gene-editing experiment sparks worry, outrage

Hundreds of women with breast implants have developed a rare cancer

WHEN Michelle Forney’s breast started swelling and itching, doctors told her she had mastitis, a common infection, and treated her with antibiotics. When she discovered that she, in fact, had a rare form of lymphoma and that it was probably caused by her breast implant, she was both furious and frightened.

Forney is just one of hundreds of breast-implant recipients who have developed a rare blood cancer called anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL). The Food and Drug Administration has been investigating reports linking breast implants with the cancer, and now has more than 400 reports about patients who developed ALCL after having a breast implant, including nine who died.

“I had my breast implants for about 19 years. And everything was fine for many of those years until about three years ago,” when she developed major itching and pain in her breast, said Forney, who is 46 and lives in Sacramento.

“Come December of last year, I woke up one day and my breast was the size of a volleyball. Within a day it grew and just engorged,” Forney told NBC News. “So I immediately went back to the doctor, saw my OB-GYN and she brought in a breast specialist. And they said: ‘Oh, breast mastitis. You have an infection.’”

But a 10-day course of antibiotics did nothing to help.

Forney’s doctors did not link the symptoms to lymphoma, she

said, and mammograms showed no problem. It took several more visits to determine she had lymphoma.

Finally, after a plastic surgeon persuaded Forney to have her implants removed, dozens of tiny tumors were found around the implant.

Women choose to get breast implants either for breast reconstruction after mastectomy or for cosmetic reasons. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reported 400,000 breast implant procedures took place in 2017, up nearly 40 percent since 2000.

It’s taken several years to gather data but the FDA now believes that textured breast implants may be more likely to cause ALCL, although it says smooth implants are also linked to an increased risk. The trouble is that there’s no organized effort to put together data from people who have implants and those who have developed ALCL. “Many studies have looked to estimate risk and, depending on the source data and country, the global lifetime risk of developing breast-implant-associated ALCL for patients with textured breast implants ranges anywhere from 1 in 3,817 to 1 in 30,000,” the FDA said.

New data from Australia indicates as many as one in 1,000 people with breast implants may develop ALCL. The FDA said the implants available in Australia are different from those sold in the U.S., and that complicates efforts to figure out the true risks.

The FDA is holding public hearings on the issue next year to try to find out more about the potential links, and to ask people what should be done about it. So is the French government, and France’s national health authority is in the meantime recommending against the use of textured implants.

“One of the problems in the United States is … with patients going to different doctors at different times and the doctors aren’t necessarily communicating with each other and their medical records aren’t communicating with each other,” said Dr. Diana Zuckerman, president of the National Center for Health Research, a nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy organization based in Washington. “There’s really no way to know when women with breast implants get any number of health problems, including cancer.” (IBP/net)

HONG KONG - The scientific world erupted with outrage and concern Monday after a Chinese scientist claimed he used gene-editing to alter the DNA of a pair of twins who were born recently.

The scientist, He Jiankui of Southern University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen, China, said he used a DNA-editing tool called CRISPR to alter the genes of the twin girls to make them resistant to infection by the AIDS virus HIV. He plans to present more details later this week at a scientific meeting in Hong Kong.

Fertility researchers around the world were quick to denounce both the way He announced his work — with a YouTube video and in an interview with the Associated Press — and the work itself.

Scientists usually present their work in journals, which vet their data and methods and usually also invite other experts in the field to check for errors before it’s published.

The idea of permanently altering a baby’s DNA so that their own children also carry the change is controversial, if not abhorrent, to much of the world.

But some experts also say the furor surrounding the case shows it may be time to legalize such work and create a regulatory framework to ensure it is done safely and ethically.

China’s Southern University said it did not support the experiment. “The research work was carried out outside the school by Associate Professor He Jiankui. He did not report to the school and the department of biology, and the school and the biology department did not know about it,” it said in a statement. The university said it was investigating. Likewise, Rice University in Houston distanced itself from Michael Deem, a bioengineering professor there who said he collaborated with He on the project. “This research raises troubling scientific, legal and ethical questions,” the university said in a statement.

“Rice had no knowledge of this work. To Rice’s knowledge, none of

the clinical work was performed in the United States. Regardless of where it was conducted, this work as described in press reports, violates scientific conduct guidelines and is inconsistent with ethical norms of the scientific community and Rice University. We have begun a full investigation of Dr. Deem’s involvement in this research,” it added.

Other experts pointed out that the work was evidently done on healthy human embryos, and not to correct any genetic diseases. They said there is a difference between experimenting to save a life, and experimenting on babies out of scientific curiosity.

“If true, this experiment is monstrous,” said Julian Savulescu, an expert on bioethics at Britain’s Oxford University. “Gene editing itself is experimental and is still associated with off-target mutations, capable of causing genetic problems early and later in life, including the development of cancer. There are many effective ways to prevent HIV in healthy individuals: for example, protected sex. And there are effective treatments if one does contract it.”

Dr. Robert Winston, a fertility expert at Imperial College London, said the experiment amounted to scientific misconduct.

“It should be condemned,” he said in a statement.

Experts worry that permanently altering the germline — the genes that are passed on to children — can cause unanticipated problems for future generations.

Several European countries ban germline gene editing, while allowing gene therapy to treat disease in a patient without altering DNA likely to be passed along to offspring. The U.S. has a complex system that strongly discourages germline gene-editing in people. Congress has expressly forbidden the Food and Drug Administration to approve germline gene editing treatments involving people and that has had the effect of discouraging the work. (IBP/net)

The launch of Paksebali tourism village was enlivened by dance performance of Paksebali village entitled Subali. It is said the village was named Subali associated with Subali puppet figure having brave, wise and dignified characters. Subali village gradually became Paksebali village. The event was also attended by Regional Secretary of Klungkung, I Gede Putu Winastra, members of the Klungkung House of Representatives, A.A. Sayang Suparta and Ketut Juliarta, related agencies, tourism players and local community leaders. Kelan sunset tourism to be boosted into leading potential

MANGUPURA - Kelan Beach, located adjacent to the Kedonganan Beach, has not been well known because the location is hidden near the end of the Ngurah Rai Airport’s runway.

However, the Kelan Beach does have potential that has not been widely known to the public.

According to Chief of Kelan customary village, Wayan Sukerena, when confirmed on Monday (Nov. 26), in the Kelan Beach area has indeed been developed the sunset tour by using traditional boats. In the future, he will boost the activity further because he admitted that so far the enthusiasm of visitors to enjoy sunset tour is

quite high.

From the data available, during winter season, this activity can be done in 4-6 trips a day. In which in one trip, each traditional boat can carry 7 - 12 people. “In the future, we are further boosting this to become our mainstay potential.

Though in other places have been using cruise ships, we will still use

traditional boats to make it more classic,” he concluded.

In addition to developing sunset tourism potential, his village will also arrange the stalls on the Kelan Beach. He will develop typical culinary potential of Kelan that is not owned by other regions.

Aside from increasing tourist visits to Kelan Beach, it will

continue to make arrangements.

It plans to cooperate with the Badung district government. “We are still coordinating the planning with social (pawongan) and environmental (palemahan) aspect so that later on the beach can accommodate the interests of Kelan community because it does not have extensive coastal area,” he concluded.

Sukerena added the concept of structuring is very simple because it wants to ‘sell’ Kelan Beach at af-

fordable price to community. Later, the beach will be open to general public as a place to play, exercise, swim and so on.

He revealed that currently Kelan Beach has camel and horse tourism rides. In the future, this potential will also be continuously developed. With camel and horse riding tourism, he targets local and foreign tourists. “This camel has been operated for two months. The management is still not optimal,” he said. (kmb23)

MANGUPURA - Breast cancer is a disease with the highest percentage compared to other cancers in the world. From the existing research data during the period of January to September 2018, there were 627,000 people in the world suffering from breast cancer.

“A total of 42.1 percent of all cancers are breast cancer. And of the 42.1 percent, 17 percent of people with breast cancer died because they are already severe,” said Chairman of the Indonesian Breast Cancer Foundation (YKPI), Linda Amalia Sari Agum Gumelar, when giving exposure to a series of Astra Berseri Village Festival on Monday (Nov. 26) at the Widya Sabha Hall of Udayana University, Jimbaran.

According to data from Globalcan 2018, she said the breast cancer in the world has the highest percentage of new cases, reaching 42 percent. Meanwhile, for Indonesia breast cancer is the highest type of cancer equivalent to 30.9 percent or 58,256 of the total 188,231 new cases. For this reason, her YKPI foundation has a mission to achieve breast cancer-free Indonesia of advanced stage by 2030. “This is in accordance with the SDGs that must also be achieved in 2030,” he said.

In Indonesia, Linda said there are many deaths from breast cancer. Admittedly, approximately 70 percent died due to late handling.

due to fear, and ignorance of the disease.

Gene-edited baby trial ‘paused’: China scientist

HONG KONG - The Chinese scientist who claims to have created the world’s first geneticallyedited babies said Wednesday the trial had been paused, following an international outcry over the highly controversial procedure.

He Jiankui defended his work in front of a packed Hong Kong biomedical conference, saying he had successfully altered the DNA of twin girls born to an HIV-positive father, an apparent medical first.

A total of eight volunteer couples -- HIV-positive fathers and HIV-negative mothers -- had signed up to the trial, with one dropping out before it was halted.

He said there had been “another potential pregnancy” involving a second couple, but when questioned further agreed it had been a chemical pregnancy -- a term referring to a very early miscarriage.

“I must apologise this result was leaked unexpectedly,” He said of the apparent breakthrough “The clinical trial was paused due to the current situation,” he added.

The conference has been upended by the gene-edited baby revelations claims, after university professor He posted a video claiming the twin girls -- born a few weeks ago -- had had their DNA altered to prevent them from contracting HIV.

The move prompted a heated debate among the scientific community, with many raising concerns over the lack of verified data and the risks of exposing healthy embryos to gene editing.

Editing human embryos can create unintended mutations in other areas -- so-called “off-target effects” -- which can be carried through to birth, experts warned.

But He took to the stage Wednesday to justify his work, and was bombarded with questions as he told the audience that the parents were aware of the potential dangers when they signed up.

“The volunteers were informed of the risk posed by the existence of one potential off-target and they decided to implant,” he said.

He also said the university where he works had been “unaware of the study’s conduct.”

Southern University of Science and Technology, in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, had earlier distanced itself from He, saying he had been on unpaid leave since February and had “seriously

violated academic ethics and codes of conduct”.

Organisers of the Second International Summit on Human Genome Editing, which opened Tuesday, also said they had been unaware of He’s work.

Conference moderator Robin Lovell-Badge said He’s trial was a “backward step” for the science industry, but described the babies’ birth as “momentous” nonetheless.

“This is an example of an approach that was not sufficiently careful and cautious and proportionate,” he said.

“Clearly however it is a point in history... These two babies would appear to be the first gene-edited babies. So it is a momentous point in history.”

Summit chair David Baltimore, a Nobel laureate, said there had been “a failure of self-regulation by the scientific community because of a lack of transparency.”

MANILA - Rights groups raised fears Wednesday after Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte announced plans to create a “death squad” targeting suspected communist rebels, saying it would worsen the “calamity” triggered by his deadly drug war.

The Philippines’ 50-year fight against communist militants, one of Asia’s oldest insurgencies, long pre-dates his anti-narcotics crackdown that has killed thousands and drawn international censure.

Duterte, like previous governments, initially held peace talks with the communists but shelved negotiations last year over deadly attacks against soldiers and police.

In a speech Tuesday night, he took aim at the communist rebels’ hit squads known as “sparrow units”.

“What I lack is my own sparrow.

That is where they (communists) have an edge... So I will create my own sparrow, Duterte Death Squad against the sparrow,” the president said.

“I will match their talent also for assassinating people,” he added.

Philippine Defence Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said Wednesday his team would study the plan “very closely. Who will compose it, who will supervise it, who will be the targets,” adding there was “great danger of abuse”.

Since negotiations with the rebels broke down, Duterte also formally designated the Communist Party of the Philippines and its 3,800-member armed wing the

New People’s Army (NPA) as terrorist organisations.

The low-level, simmering insurgency has claimed 30,000 lives by the government’s count.

The founder of the Communist Party, Jose Maria Sison, said on Wednesday that “sparrow units” only existed in the 1970s and 1980s at the height of the insurgency.

“He is inventing so many sparrow units to justify his own death squads which are illegal,” Sison told ABS-CBN television.

The president’s announcement drew immediate concerns from campaigners, who said the death squad would worsen the already lethal environment encouraged by the drug war.

Police say they have killed nearly 5,000 alleged users and pushers, while rights groups say the toll is at least triple that and could amount to crimes against humanity.

“His (Duterte’s) statement is a declaration of open season against rebels, leftists, civilians, and critics of the government,” Human Rights Watch said in a statement.

“This new policy will only worsen the ongoing drug warfueled human rights calamity in the Philippines.”

Amnesty International also expressed alarm, citing the practice of labelling government critics as communist rebels or sympathisers.

BUSINESS European banking chief: euro needs a central budget

FRANKFURT - The head of the European Central Bank is renewing his pleas to fix flaws in the 19-country euro currency, urging European leaders to adopt a central spending pot to buffer individual governments against financial crises.

Mario Draghi said Monday in the European Parliament that “the euro area needs a fiscal instrument” to keep member countries afloat during sudden shocks like the 2007-08 global financial crisis.

Such a fiscal pot, he said, needs to be big enough and should deploy automatically when trouble strikes, but must not encourage irresponsible spending by governments. He cited the example of the United States, where spending by the federal government continues uninterrupted when trouble hits an individual state.

The 19-country eurozone, which marks the 20th anniversary of the shared currency at year end, survived a debt and economic crisis in 2010-2012. That experience has led to the recognition that the currency union lacked key elements when it was created in 1999 as an ambitious project to further integrate the European Union’s economy.

Eurozone countries that hit recessions can’t take the usual steps of cutting central bank interest rates or letting their currencies fall in value, since they

no longer have their own currency. The union means there is one currency and central bank — but 19 different governments with responsibility for economic policy and spending.

Draghi said that proposals by the European Commission for an EU fund to support investment spending, and by the French and German governments for a eurozone-only budget within the broader EU budget, were “first steps.”

Both proposals envisage funds that are only a fraction of the eurozone economy, and the Commission’s proposal is for budget support in the form of loans that would have to be paid back.

Draghi said that the multiple proposals suggested that the idea of a central budget had gained support. He called for “a combination of vision and realism” in addressing the currency’s shortcomings.

Germany and other northern European countries have resisted close fiscal ties for fear of creating a system of dependency where countries that don’t keep their finances under control get permanent subsidies from countries that do. (ap)

Thomas Cook shares collapse on fresh profit warning

Thomas Cook shares collapsed by almost one third Tuesday as the British travel firm issued a fresh profits-warning and suspended its dividend. The company said underlying annual profits would come in at £250 million ($321 million, 283 million euros) for the 12 months to September.

Thomas Cook will publish final results

on Thursday, while 2017-18 earnings were knocked badly by a long period of hot European weather over the summer that saw customers put off last-minute holidays abroad.

The group had already warned in September that its annual profits would be around £280 million, down from £58 million in 2016/2017.

On Thursday, Thomas Cook also suspended its annual shareholder dividend, contributing to its share price plunging 30 percent to 33.94 pence in morning deals.

“2018 was a disappointing year for Thomas Cook,” said chief executive Peter Fankhauser, citing the impact of a “prolonged period of hot weather in our key

summer trading period”.

The stock, which is listed on London’s second-tier FTSE 250 index, later stood down 24.8 percent at 36.50 pence. The overall FTSE 250 dipped 0.4 percent to 18,652.99 points. (afp)

Sangging, a Person Officiating in Tooth Filling Ritual

One of the obligatory ceremonies to be implemented by the Hindus in Bali is mapandes or tooth filing ceremony. The ceremony is conducted by a sangging or tooth filer symbolically chiseling the four upper incisors and two canines. Then, it is resumed with filing the teeth by using a saw filer, so that they become flat and neat.

Dr. I Made Surada, a lecturer of State Hindu Dharma Institute (IHDN) Denpasar, said that sangging is person who has certain ability in the ceremony, such as making the offerings, bade tower, shrine building, sculpture, painting and others. People having the profession as sangging have already owned the skills. “To become a sangging, people have to go through a pawintenan or initiation rite according to the level of ceremony performed,” he said.

A sangging is not only good at making the works, but also able to perform initiation rite (spiritually animate the work). Sangging is not only able to officiate over physically (sekala), but also psychically (niskala). “Sangging has to be able to chant mantra so that a sangging should have undergone a pawintenan at its spiritual teacher,” he said.

Temple priest and high priest usually also serve as sangging. In certain case, the sangging can also be assisted in the process of ceremony. At first, he consecrates the chisel, filer and gem with the meaning that the tooth to be filed will become brilliant. The palm-leaf manuscripts used as reference for this tooth-filing ceremony are the Tatwa Kala, Kala Puja Pati, Semaradahana and Tutur Sanghyang Yama.

Lately, there is an official becom-

ing a sangging. It is okay provided that it has undergone the initiation rite for the profession. Otherwise, it can only watch the procession because the ritual must be accompanied with mantra to be chanted.

Without mantra, the procession will be the same as filing teeth at beauty salon or dental clinic. “Although the people are not high priests, they can also become a sangging as long as they have taken the initiation rite for the profession first,” he said.

It is different from the case of tooth filing for dead people. The sangging will be assigned to its biological mother. This provision is carried in the Proktah palm-leaf manuscript. The tool used to file the teeth is rice knife commonly used in earlier times. Otherwise, it can be replaced with lotus flower as the rice knife seems to be difficult to find.

“Sangging having not undergone the initiation rite is believed to bring in an effect on the next descent,” he explained.

He said that Hindu communities in Bali always organizes tooth filing ceremony for their sons and daughters after growing adult. This ceremony aims to control the influence of Shadripu (six enemies) in the children because their desire will give more opportunities to be teased. When this happens, it will infiltrate and have negative impact

on their behavior.

On that account, they are purified by tooth filing rite whose implementation comes with a set of offerings symbolizing the teeth. In the filing ritual for the six teeth, the ends symbolize Adharma (untruth) that are then filed to make them flat symbolizing dharma. By doing so, dharma remains to control of the life of children having undergone the ritual.

Tooth filing is a ritual with the meaning to discover the true nature of human and release from the shackles

of darkness or Shadripu effect in humans. Shadripu poses six enemies arising from the nature of bad deeds in human, namely Kama (lust), Lobha (greed), Krodha (anger), Mada (arrogance), Moha (attachment) and Matsarya (jealousy).

People can undergo the tooth filing ceremony when they physically have entered adolescent period. In girls, it can be done after getting the first menstruation and in boys after experiencing voice changes. This ritual is meant to remove impurities in the form of kala, bhuta, pisacas

and raksasa in the sense that the body and soul are overwhelmed by the Shadripu nature so as to find true nature of human.

Another objective is also to get reunited with their father and mother having been in sacred realm, to avoid punishment in hell later on imposed by Lord Yama in the form of biting lower end of petung bamboo as stated in the Atma Prasangsa palm-leaf manuscript and parents can meet their obligations to their children so as to be genuine human. mawijaya Mantra, inaugurated the Kumbasari Park marked by signing of inscription and putting animal sacrifice into the flow of Badung River. Today, the area becomes a new tourist attraction for the local community and tourists.

Mayor Rai Mantra accompanied by the Chairman of the Commission III of the Denpasar House of Representatives, Eko Supriadi, also spread 10,000 tilapia fingerlings in the flow of Badung River along with relevant agency heads in the city government of Denpasar. This is to preserve the ecosystem of Badung River. Rai Mantra also provided groceries to 140 officers of clean river program (Prokasih), 105 flushing officers and 40 gatekeepers symbolically.

He said the arrangement is meant to make the river clean and transform it into a River Walk con-

cept (a place to walk on the river bank). “Badung River can now be used as a recreation place and have economic impact and educate the public about cleanliness of the future with the increase of selfawareness. So, the river will not be made into a place to dispose of garbage,” he said.

Arrangement of the Badung River, explained Rai Mantra, is meant to encourage people to keep the river clean and not to litter.

This does not only transform them to look beautiful, but also makes something that has the potential, as in Bindu River and Tukad River.

Now, they become a new potential and special attraction.

Onwards, the river arrangement will continuously be done by paying attention to the entire river flow that allows to be reorganized. If possible, they will be made river transporta-

tion such as small boats to further facilitate the transportation of river recreation. Besides, it will facilitate the community to traditional markets connected to the river. “So, this River Walk can be used as a potential of water in all aspects, whether the economic, education, transportation and health aspect. It makes something useless into something valuable,” said Rai Mantra.

Acting Head of the Denpasar Public Works and Spatial Agency, Nyoman Ngurah Jimmy Sidarta, revealed the arrangement of river banks in essence can change the behavior of people who consider the river as a garbage dump. “With this arrangement, people are expected to no longer throw garbage into the river. Blast kills 23 outside China factory in Olympic city ZHANGJIAKOU - A truck carrying combustible chemicals exploded at the entrance of a chemical factory in a northern Chinese city that will host the 2022 Winter Olympics Wednesday, leaving 23 people dead and 22 others injured, state media and authorities said.

The blast ignited other vehicles, leaving charred and smoking remains of trucks and cars scattered on a road as firefighters worked at the scene, according to images posted online by state media.

A witness told AFP he heard a “very loud bang” after midnight and saw a field and trucks engulfed in flames outside the factory in Zhangjiakou, a city some 200 kilometres (124 miles) northwest of Beijing.

The side of a building was covered in soot in front of a row of burnt out trucks across the road, footage broadcast by CCTV showed following the latest deadly incident to hit a factory in China.

The blast damaged 38 trucks and 12 cars, the local propaganda department said on its Twitter-like

Weibo social media account.

The injured were taken to hospitals for treatment following the blast at 00:41 am, according to the department. The death toll rose from 22 to 23 later in the day after another body was found, according to the city government.

The factory’s and exterior archway were blackened. Across from the blast, AFP reporters saw a field of blackened grass and trees, with smoke billowing from the embers.

Heavy machinery was brought in to remove debris.

A truck carrying acetylene blew up when entering the plant, igniting nearby vehicles, according to the official Xinhua news agency, which cited a preliminary investigation.

Rescue efforts and the investigation were still underway, Xinhua said.

The Zhangjiakou propaganda department said the blast occurred near Hebei Shenghua Chemical Co., but Xinhua later reported that it happened at the entrance of nearby Haipo’er New Energy Technology Co. (afp)

TIJUANA - Still stinging from the tear gas that beat back their attempt to breach the USMexican border, members of the Central American migrant caravan are starting to lose hope, and in some cases are turning back.

The migrants have played all their cards in recent days, after more than a month’s trek across Central America and Mexico -- but with little success.

Their surprise bid to rush the border en masse on Sunday ended as abruptly as it began, when US Border Patrol agents fired tear gas and rubber bullets to force them back.

And attempts to sneak across the border alone or in small groups appear to be largely failing.

That leaves the roughly 5,000 migrants in the caravan with a handful of options, equally unappealing to most: wait the months or years it could take to request asylum in the United States; settle in Mexico; or give up and go home.

Their desperation is palpable at the improvised shelter where they are staying in Tijuana, across the border from San Diego.

Living in crowded conditions, with limited toilets, disease outbreaks and two rations of food a day, many are still shell-shocked from the failed attempt by about 500 migrants to get over the chainlink border fence topped with

barbed wire on Sunday.

“We thought they were going to kill us. It’s going to be hard to get to the other side,” said Brayan Casas, a 28-year-old from Honduras, showing the bruises he got when he, his wife and his son joined Sunday’s stampede.

“They learned their lesson,” an employee of Mexico’s National Migration Institute told AFP at the shelter, speaking on condition of anonymity.

“They’ve seen they won’t be able to cross easily. They’re a lot less rebellious today.”

The migrants are mostly fleeing poverty and violence in Central America’s “Northern Triangle” -- El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.

US President Donald Trump has however warned of an “invasion” by a group full of “hardened criminals.”

Some migrants have tried to sneak into the United States alone, without much success.

“I’ve tried five times already,”

said Danilo Mejia, 26, a skinny Honduran man in an oversized leather jacket, who says the US Border Patrol sent him back to Mexico each time.

“I thought if it was dark they wouldn’t see me, but they’re real watchdogs.”

He says he does not have the $10,000 or so he would have to pay a human trafficker, or “coyote,” to bring him into the United States.

But sneaking in through the desert alone is a perilous strategy.

Hundreds of migrants die trying every year, of dehydration, hypothermia or snake bites.

Seeking asylum in the United States is not much easier.

In Tijuana, the waiting list to enter the US at an official border crossing and apply for asylum currently has more than 5,000 names on it, including caravan members and other migrants who were already in line.

And the US is backlogged with asylum cases: requests increased by 2,000 percent in the past five years, and there are currently 700,000 pending. (afp)

Indonesia’s new ‘heresy app’ draws fire

A new Indonesian government app that lets the public report suspected cases of religious heresy is drawing fire as rights groups warn it could aggravate persecution of minorities in the world’s biggest Muslim-majority nation.

Users of the app can report groups practicing unrecognised faiths or unorthodox interpretations of Indonesia’s six officially recognised religions, including Islam, Hinduism, Christianity and Buddhism.

“Smart Pakem”, which was launched Sunday and is available for free in the Google Play store, was created by the Jakarta Prosecutor’s Office, which said it would help educate the public and modernise the current reporting process.

The app will also list religious edicts and blacklisted organisations and will allow users to file complaints instantaneously, instead going through the often cumbersome process of submitting a written accusation to a government office.

“The objective...is to provide easier access to information about the spread of beliefs in Indonesia, to educate the public and to prevent them from following doctrines from an individual or a group that are not in line with the regulations,” Nirwan Nawawi, a spokesman for the prosecutor’s office, told AFP in a statement.

However, rights groups fear the application could be misused by increasingly powerful hardline Islamic groups and widen divisions in a country where harassment of religious and other minorities is not uncommon.

“This is going from bad to worse -- another dangerous step to discriminate religious minorities in Indonesia,” said Human Rights Watch researcher Andreas Harsono.

Bonar Tigor Naipospos, vice chairman of rights group Setara Institute, added: “This is dangerous because if mainstream society doesn’t like (a group) they’ll report them through the application -- this will create problems.”

He said Indonesia has a huge potential market, and the government at this time has also been focusing on developing progressive infrastructure.

In addition to focusing on infrastructure, the coordinating minister for maritime affairs highlighted the village fund programs, development of special economic zones, and improved RI global investment ratings, among others.

Based on data, investment from China as well as Hong Kong in Indonesia had reached some US$5.5 billion in 2017, or some 17 percent of the total investment.

The governments of Indonesia and China have also worked closely, especially in the past three years, and the minister is optimistic that various projects and cooperation programs would continue to be improved.

“Indonesia and China need to promote better global and regional

partnerships. Both countries have the capacity to do that,” Panjaitan noted.

In line with the view of coordinating minister for maritime affairs, CSIS founder Jusuf Wanandi highlighted the importance for Indonesia and China to strengthen cooperation in an era filled with global uncertainty.

Meanwhile, Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia Xiao Qian stated that the heads of state of the two countries had visited each other to

strengthen cooperation.

In addition, Qian reminded that various cooperation programs had also begun to be implemented, such as the Jakarta-Bandung fast train.

Heavyweight greats tip Fury if Wilder bout goes distance

LOS ANGELES - Kyle Lowry tallied 24 points as the NBAleading Toronto Raptors continued their dominance by storming back from a 17-point deficit to beat the resurgent Memphis Grizzlies 122114 on Tuesday.

Four-time all-star Lowry, who also had six assists, has now scored in double figures in 16 consecutive games against the Grizzlies.

“It was a good win. We put ourselves in a hole and we had to dig ourselves out, but we did what had to do to win the game,” said Lowry.

Fred VanVleet also scored 18 points for the Raptors who have won nine of the last 11 contests against the Grizzlies including three of the last four in Memphis.

Toronto used a three point shooting barrage halfway through the fourth quarter to wipe out a Grizzlies’ lead and seize command in front of a crowd of 14,100 at the FedEx Forum. The Raptors outscored the Southwest Division leading Memphis 17-2 during that stretch and would never trail again.

VanVleet drained three shots from beyond the arc in the fourth and Lowry finished with five of eight attempted threes. VanVleet made all six shots he took in the game. Kawhi Leonard delivered 17 points and 10 rebounds and Serge Ibaka added 16 for the Raptors who have compiled a sizeable winning streak since suffering a three-game losing skid.

LOS ANGELES - Former heavyweight champions Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield believe Tyson Fury can dethrone Deontay Wilder if Saturday’s WBC championship fight goes the distance.

WBC heavyweight king Wilder takes on Britain’s Fury at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Saturday in a battle of unbeaten fighters.

The high-stakes contest could ultimately pave the way for a money-spinning unification bout against Anthony Joshua, the WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight champion.

While several former heavyweights believe Wilder possesses the punching power to force an early victory on Saturday, Lewis and Holyfield believe the odds will tilt in Fury’s favour the longer the fight goes on.

“I think with Deontay’s power, he might be able to end it early, but if Tyson can frustrate him and it goes the distance, then it could go his way,” Holyfield said

Tuesday.

“Tyson’s always been the bigger fighter. In fighting Deontay it’s the same case. If things get difficult, he’s (Fury’s) got more experience and a lot of tricks.”

Lewis, the former undisputed heavyweight king, echoed Holyfield’s verdict.

“If it goes the distance then it belongs to Tyson Fury,” Lewis said.

“If it’s a short fight it will belong to Deontay Wilder.”

Heavyweight legend Mike Tyson meanwhile believes Fury’s mental durability will carry him to the title.

Fury, 30, has made a successful return to boxing after a lengthy layoff which saw him battle depression and problems with drink and drugs. Fury said in October he had contemplated suicide in

2016 as his life spiralled out of control.

Tyson said that Fury’s ability to rebuild his career after overcoming personal turmoil sets him apart from Wilder.

“Although Wilder’s punch is strong, nothing can compare to the mental strength Fury has shown both in and out of the ring,” Tyson said.

“It’ll be a close call, but I think Fury’s got a true fighting chance.”

But former heavyweight champion Riddick Bowe is backing Wilder’s punching power to overwhelm Fury early on.

“If Wilder comes out and means business then he should beat Fury with ease,” said Bowe, the undisputed heavyweight champion in 1992. “My prediction is Wilder by knockout!” (afp)

Bayern Munich romped to an emphatic 5-1 home win against Benfica on Tuesday to qualify for the Champions League last 16 and ease the pressure on coach Niko Kovac.

Arjen Robben and Robert Lewandowski both scored twice before Franck Ribery completed the rout at the Allianz Arena after Gedson Fernandes had pulled one back for Benfica.

Kovac’s team shrugged off lacklustre league form -- winning just two and losing three of their last eight Bundesliga games -with a convincing display.

“These goals were important not just for me, but for the team,” said Robben. “We played well, found the right tempo, attacked well and we did not concede much.

“It’s a convincing win and that’s exactly what we needed at the moment.” The victory eases the pressure on Kovac, who now needs another win at Werder Bremen on Saturday in the league.

“We all know how it works in football, but we win together and we lose together, the coach is one of us, we work intensively together every day,” added Robben.

This is the 11th season in succession Bayern have reached the last 16 of the Champions League.

While Bayern sit just fifth in the Bundesliga, they are flying in Europe, having now chalked up four wins and a draw in the Champions League’s group stage.

They need just a point at Ajax in a fortnight to win Group A, while the best Benfica can hope for is third and a place in the Europa League knock-out phase.

Mourinho brash as Fellaini late show secures Man Utd last 16 place Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho boasted about his Champions League record after Marouane Fellaini’s injury time winner fired his side into the last 16 with a 1-0 win over Young Boys at Old Trafford.

The three-time European champions sealed their place in the knockout stages with a slice of fortune when Fellaini controlled the ball with his hand before firing into the far corner, provoking Mourinho to throw a box of water bottles to the ground in a mixture of joy and relief.

“For some of my lovers, for those who like stats, 14 seasons in the Champions League, 14 times qualify through the group phases,” said Mourinho on his personal record as boss of Porto, Chelsea and Real Madrid as well as United.

“Never one of my teams stays behind the group phase. The season I didn’t play Champions League, I won the Europa League.”

But there was little for Mourinho to brag about from another laboured performance as United were on the verge of failing to score for a third consecutive European home game for the first time ever.

“The most important thing is to qualify,” said Mourinho, who has had to withstand a barrage of criticism this season for United’s poor results and insipid attacking football.

In keeping with United’s struggles under Mourinho, it could have been even worse but for the brilliance of goalkeeper David de Gea, who produced a stunning save from Ulisses Garcia’s deflected effort to deny Young Boys midway through the second-half.

Heavyweight greats tip Fury if Wilder bout goes distance

LOS ANGELES - Kyle Lowry tallied 24 points as the NBAleading Toronto Raptors continued their dominance by storming back from a 17-point deficit to beat the resurgent Memphis Grizzlies 122114 on Tuesday.

Four-time all-star Lowry, who also had six assists, has now scored in double figures in 16 consecutive games against the Grizzlies.

“It was a good win. We put ourselves in a hole and we had to dig ourselves out, but we did what had to do to win the game,” said Lowry.

LOS ANGELES - Former heavyweight champions Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield believe Tyson Fury can dethrone Deontay Wilder if Saturday’s WBC championship fight goes the distance.

WBC heavyweight king Wilder takes on Britain’s Fury at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Saturday in a battle of unbeaten fighters.

The high-stakes contest could ultimately pave the way for a money-spinning unification bout against Anthony Joshua, the WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight champion.

While several former heavyweights believe Wilder possesses the punching power to force an early victory on Saturday, Lewis and Holyfield believe the odds will tilt in Fury’s favour the longer the fight goes on.

“I think with Deontay’s power, he might be able to end it early, but if Tyson can frustrate him and it goes the distance, then it could go his way,” Holyfield said

Tuesday.

“Tyson’s always been the bigger fighter. In fighting Deontay it’s the same case. If things get difficult, he’s (Fury’s) got more experience and a lot of tricks.”

Lewis, the former undisputed heavyweight king, echoed Holyfield’s verdict.

“If it goes the distance then it belongs to Tyson Fury,” Lewis said.

“If it’s a short fight it will belong to Deontay Wilder.”

Heavyweight legend Mike Tyson meanwhile believes Fury’s mental durability will carry him to the title.

Fury, 30, has made a successful return to boxing after a lengthy layoff which saw him battle depression and problems with drink and drugs. Fury said in October he had contemplated suicide in

Tyson said that Fury’s ability to rebuild his career after overcoming personal turmoil sets him apart from Wilder.

“It’ll be a close call, but I think Fury’s got a true fighting chance.”

But former heavyweight champion Riddick Bowe is backing Wilder’s punching power to overwhelm Fury early on.

Blast kills 23 outside China factory in Olympic city ZHANGJIAKOU - A truck carrying combustible chemicals exploded at the entrance of a chemical factory in a northern Chinese city that will host the 2022 Winter Olympics Wednesday, leaving 23 people dead and 22 others injured, state media and authorities said.

The blast ignited other vehicles, leaving charred and smoking remains of trucks and cars scattered on a road as firefighters worked at the scene, according to images posted online by state media.

A witness told AFP he heard a “very loud bang” after midnight and saw a field and trucks engulfed in flames outside the factory in Zhangjiakou, a city some 200 kilometres (124 miles) northwest of Beijing.

The side of a building was covered in soot in front of a row of burnt out trucks across the road, footage broadcast by CCTV showed following the latest deadly incident to hit a factory in China.

The blast damaged 38 trucks and 12 cars, the local propaganda department said on its Twitter-like

Weibo social media account.

The injured were taken to hospitals for treatment following the blast at 00:41 am, according to the department. The death toll rose from 22 to 23 later in the day after another body was found, according to the city government.

The factory’s and exterior archway were blackened. Across from the blast, AFP reporters saw a field of blackened grass and trees, with smoke billowing from the embers.

Heavy machinery was brought in to remove debris.

A truck carrying acetylene blew up when entering the plant, igniting nearby vehicles, according to the official Xinhua news agency, which cited a preliminary investigation.

Rescue efforts and the investigation were still underway, Xinhua said.

The Zhangjiakou propaganda department said the blast occurred near Hebei Shenghua Chemical Co., but Xinhua later reported that it happened at the entrance of nearby Haipo’er New Energy Technology Co. (afp)

TIJUANA - Still stinging from the tear gas that beat back their attempt to breach the USMexican border, members of the Central American migrant caravan are starting to lose hope, and in some cases are turning back.

The migrants have played all their cards in recent days, after more than a month’s trek across Central America and Mexico -- but with little success.

Their surprise bid to rush the border en masse on Sunday ended as abruptly as it began, when US Border Patrol agents fired tear gas and rubber bullets to force them back.

And attempts to sneak across the border alone or in small groups appear to be largely failing.

That leaves the roughly 5,000 migrants in the caravan with a handful of options, equally unappealing to most: wait the months or years it could take to request asylum in the United States; settle in Mexico; or give up and go home.

Their desperation is palpable at the improvised shelter where they are staying in Tijuana, across the border from San Diego.

Living in crowded conditions, with limited toilets, disease outbreaks and two rations of food a day, many are still shell-shocked from the failed attempt by about 500 migrants to get over the chainlink border fence topped with

barbed wire on Sunday.

“We thought they were going to kill us. It’s going to be hard to get to the other side,” said Brayan Casas, a 28-year-old from Honduras, showing the bruises he got when he, his wife and his son joined Sunday’s stampede.

- Long wait -

“They learned their lesson,” an employee of Mexico’s National Migration Institute told AFP at the shelter, speaking on condition of anonymity.

“They’ve seen they won’t be able to cross easily. They’re a lot less rebellious today.”

The migrants are mostly fleeing poverty and violence in Central America’s “Northern Triangle” -- El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.

US President Donald Trump has however warned of an “invasion” by a group full of “hardened criminals.”

Some migrants have tried to sneak into the United States alone, without much success.

“I’ve tried five times already,”

said Danilo Mejia, 26, a skinny Honduran man in an oversized leather jacket, who says the US Border Patrol sent him back to Mexico each time.

“I thought if it was dark they wouldn’t see me, but they’re real watchdogs.”

He says he does not have the $10,000 or so he would have to pay a human trafficker, or “coyote,” to bring him into the United States.

But sneaking in through the desert alone is a perilous strategy.

Hundreds of migrants die trying every year, of dehydration, hypothermia or snake bites.

Seeking asylum in the United States is not much easier.

In Tijuana, the waiting list to enter the US at an official border crossing and apply for asylum currently has more than 5,000 names on it, including caravan members and other migrants who were already in line.

And the US is backlogged with asylum cases: requests increased by 2,000 percent in the past five years, and there are currently 700,000 pending. (afp)

The APA, a US airline pilots’ union, said carriers and pilots had not been informed by Boeing of certain changes in the aircraft control system installed on the new MAX variants of the 737.

“I am really surprised if Boeing has not shared all the flight performance parameters with

pilots, unions, and training organisations,” University of Leeds aviation expert Stephen Wright told AFP, adding that “a deliberate omission would have serious legal ramifications”.

Several relatives of the crash victims have already filed lawsuits against Boeing, including the family of a young doctor who was to have married his high school sweetheart this month.

Indonesia’s new ‘heresy app’ draws fire

A new Indonesian government app that lets the public report suspected cases of religious heresy is drawing fire as rights groups warn it could aggravate persecution of minorities in the world’s biggest Muslim-majority nation.

Users of the app can report groups practicing unrecognised faiths or unorthodox interpretations of Indonesia’s six officially recognised religions, including Islam, Hinduism, Christianity and Buddhism.

“Smart Pakem”, which was launched Sunday and is available for free in the Google Play store, was created by the Jakarta Prosecutor’s Office, which said it would help educate the public and modernise the current reporting process.

The app will also list religious edicts and blacklisted organisations and will allow users to file complaints instantaneously, instead going through the often cumbersome process of submitting a written accusation to a government office.

“The objective...is to provide easier access to information about the spread of beliefs in Indonesia, to educate the public and to prevent them from following doctrines from an individual or a group that are not in line with the regulations,” Nirwan Nawawi, a spokesman for the prosecutor’s office, told AFP in a statement.

However, rights groups fear the application could be misused by increasingly powerful hardline Islamic groups and widen divisions in a country where harassment of religious and other minorities is not uncommon.

“This is going from bad to worse -- another dangerous step to discriminate religious minorities in Indonesia,” said Human Rights Watch researcher Andreas Harsono.

Bonar Tigor Naipospos, vice chairman of rights group Setara Institute, added: “This is dangerous because if mainstream society doesn’t like (a group) they’ll report them through the application -- this will create problems.”

Hundreds of thousands of people across the sprawling Southeast Asian archipelago who adhere to non-recognised animist and mystical faiths have long suffered discrimination and limited access to public services.

This year an angry mob rampaged through a small community of the Ahmadiyya Islamic minority on the island of Lombok, destroying homes and forcing dozens of members to flee.

The religious sect has been declared heretical by the Indonesian Ulema Counci(MUI).

Indonesia, a 17,000 island archipelago nation, is often touted for its diversity and religious tolerance, but it has a wide-ranging blasphemy law that has sparked a backlash.

Criticising religion -- particularly Islam, which is followed by nearly 90 percent of Indonesia’s 260 million citizens -- can land offenders in jail.

This summer, an ethnic Chinese Buddhist was jailed for insulting Islam after asking her neighbourhood mosque to lower its sound system during the daily call to prayer because she found it too loud. Her jailing was widely criticised. (afp)

Chinese investors invited to invest in Indonesia

JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan has invited investors from the People`s Republic of China to increase their investment in Indonesia.

“There has been significant progress and greater convenience for foreign parties to invest in Indonesia where high and stable economic growth has been maintained,” Panjaitan remarked at the Indonesia-China Five-Year Strategic and Comprehensive Coopera-

tion Seminar here on Tuesday.

He said Indonesia has a huge potential market, and the government at this time has also been focusing on developing progressive infrastructure.

In addition to focusing on infrastructure, the coordinating minister for maritime affairs highlighted the village fund programs, development of special economic zones, and improved RI global investment ratings, among others.

Based on data, investment from China as well as Hong Kong in Indonesia had reached some US$5.5 billion in 2017, or some 17 percent of the total investment.

The governments of Indonesia and China have also worked closely, especially in the past three years, and the minister is optimistic that various projects and cooperation programs would continue to be improved.

“Indonesia and China need to promote better global and regional

partnerships. Both countries have the capacity to do that,” Panjaitan noted.

In line with the view of coordinating minister for maritime affairs, CSIS founder Jusuf Wanandi highlighted the importance for Indonesia and China to strengthen cooperation in an era filled with global uncertainty.

Meanwhile, Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia Xiao Qian stated that the heads of state of the two countries had visited each other to

strengthen cooperation.

In addition, Qian reminded that various cooperation programs had also begun to be implemented, such as the Jakarta-Bandung fast train.

Vice President Jusuf Kalla had earlier expressed optimism that the government`s policy of relaxing the negative investment list, or DNI, would attract more foreign investors to Indonesia, especially in the micro, small, and medium enterprises sector. (ant)

BUSINESS European banking chief: euro needs a central budget

FRANKFURT - The head of the European Central Bank is renewing his pleas to fix flaws in the 19-country euro currency, urging European leaders to adopt a central spending pot to buffer individual governments against financial crises.

Mario Draghi said Monday in the European Parliament that “the euro area needs a fiscal instrument” to keep member countries afloat during sudden shocks like the 2007-08 global financial crisis.

Such a fiscal pot, he said, needs to be big enough and should deploy automatically when trouble strikes, but must not encourage irresponsible spending by governments. He cited the example of the United States, where spending by the federal government continues uninterrupted when trouble hits an individual state.

The 19-country eurozone, which marks the 20th anniversary of the shared currency at year end, survived a debt and economic crisis in 2010-2012. That experience has led to the recognition that the currency union lacked key elements when it was created in 1999 as an ambitious project to further integrate the European Union’s economy.

Eurozone countries that hit recessions can’t take the usual steps of cutting central bank interest rates or letting their currencies fall in value, since they

no longer have their own currency. The union means there is one currency and central bank — but 19 different governments with responsibility for economic policy and spending.

Draghi said that proposals by the European Commission for an EU fund to support investment spending, and by the French and German governments for a eurozone-only budget within the broader EU budget, were “first steps.”

Both proposals envisage funds that are only a fraction of the eurozone economy, and the Commission’s proposal is for budget support in the form of loans that would have to be paid back.

Draghi said that the multiple proposals suggested that the idea of a central budget had gained support. He called for “a combination of vision and realism” in addressing the currency’s shortcomings.

Germany and other northern European countries have resisted close fiscal ties for fear of creating a system of dependency where countries that don’t keep their finances under control get permanent subsidies from countries that do. (ap)

Thomas Cook shares collapse on fresh profit warning

Thomas Cook shares collapsed by almost one third Tuesday as the British travel firm issued a fresh profits-warning and suspended its dividend. The company said underlying annual profits would come in at £250 million ($321 million, 283 million euros) for the 12 months to September.

Thomas Cook will publish final results

on Thursday, while 2017-18 earnings were knocked badly by a long period of hot European weather over the summer that saw customers put off last-minute holidays abroad.

The group had already warned in September that its annual profits would be around £280 million, down from £58 million in 2016/2017.

On Thursday, Thomas Cook also suspended its annual shareholder dividend, contributing to its share price plunging 30 percent to 33.94 pence in morning deals.

“2018 was a disappointing year for Thomas Cook,” said chief executive Peter Fankhauser, citing the impact of a “prolonged period of hot weather in our key

summer trading period”.

The stock, which is listed on London’s second-tier FTSE 250 index, later stood down 24.8 percent at 36.50 pence. The overall FTSE 250 dipped 0.4 percent to 18,652.99 points. (afp)

Sangging, a Person Officiating in Tooth Filling Ritual

One of the obligatory ceremonies to be implemented by the Hindus in Bali is mapandes or tooth filing ceremony. The ceremony is conducted by a sangging or tooth filer symbolically chiseling the four upper incisors and two canines. Then, it is resumed with filing the teeth by using a saw filer, so that they become flat and neat.

Dr. I Made Surada, a lecturer of State Hindu Dharma Institute (IHDN) Denpasar, said that sangging is person who has certain ability in the ceremony, such as making the offerings, bade tower, shrine building, sculpture, painting and others. People having the profession as sangging have already owned the skills. “To become a sangging, people have to go through a pawintenan or initiation rite according to the level of ceremony performed,” he said.

A sangging is not only good at making the works, but also able to perform initiation rite (spiritually animate the work). Sangging is not only able to officiate over physically (sekala), but also psychically (niskala). “Sangging has to be able to chant mantra so that a sangging should have undergone a pawintenan at its spiritual teacher,” he said.

Temple priest and high priest usually also serve as sangging. In certain case, the sangging can also be assisted in the process of ceremony. At first, he consecrates the chisel, filer and gem with the meaning that the tooth to be filed will become brilliant. The palm-leaf manuscripts used as reference for this tooth-filing ceremony are the Tatwa Kala, Kala Puja Pati, Semaradahana and Tutur Sanghyang Yama.

Lately, there is an official becom-

ing a sangging. It is okay provided that it has undergone the initiation rite for the profession. Otherwise, it can only watch the procession because the ritual must be accompanied with mantra to be chanted.

Without mantra, the procession will be the same as filing teeth at beauty salon or dental clinic. “Although the people are not high priests, they can also become a sangging as long as they have taken the initiation rite for the profession first,” he said.

It is different from the case of tooth filing for dead people. The sangging will be assigned to its biological mother. This provision is carried in the Proktah palm-leaf manuscript. The tool used to file the teeth is rice knife commonly used in earlier times. Otherwise, it can be replaced with lotus flower as the rice knife seems to be difficult to find.

“Sangging having not undergone the initiation rite is believed to bring in an effect on the next descent,” he explained.

He said that Hindu communities in Bali always organizes tooth filing ceremony for their sons and daughters after growing adult. This ceremony aims to control the influence of Shadripu (six enemies) in the children because their desire will give more opportunities to be teased. When this happens, it will infiltrate and have negative impact

on their behavior.

On that account, they are purified by tooth filing rite whose implementation comes with a set of offerings symbolizing the teeth. In the filing ritual for the six teeth, the ends symbolize Adharma (untruth) that are then filed to make them flat symbolizing dharma. By doing so, dharma remains to control of the life of children having undergone the ritual.

Tooth filing is a ritual with the meaning to discover the true nature of human and release from the shackles

of darkness or Shadripu effect in humans. Shadripu poses six enemies arising from the nature of bad deeds in human, namely Kama (lust), Lobha (greed), Krodha (anger), Mada (arrogance), Moha (attachment) and Matsarya (jealousy).

People can undergo the tooth filing ceremony when they physically have entered adolescent period. In girls, it can be done after getting the first menstruation and in boys after experiencing voice changes. This ritual is meant to remove impurities in the form of kala, bhuta, pisacas

and raksasa in the sense that the body and soul are overwhelmed by the Shadripu nature so as to find true nature of human.

Another objective is also to get reunited with their father and mother having been in sacred realm, to avoid punishment in hell later on imposed by Lord Yama in the form of biting lower end of petung bamboo as stated in the Atma Prasangsa palm-leaf manuscript and parents can meet their obligations to their children so as to be genuine human. Mayor Rai Mantra accompanied by the Chairman of the Commission III of the Denpasar House of Representatives, Eko Supriadi, also spread 10,000 tilapia fingerlings in the flow of Badung River along with relevant agency heads in the city government of Denpasar. This is to preserve the ecosystem of Badung River. Rai Mantra also provided groceries to 140 officers of clean river program (Prokasih), 105 flushing officers and 40 gatekeepers symbolically.

He said the arrangement is meant to make the river clean and transform it into a River Walk con-

cept (a place to walk on the river bank). “Badung River can now be used as a recreation place and have economic impact and educate the public about cleanliness of the future with the increase of selfawareness. So, the river will not be made into a place to dispose of garbage,” he said.

Arrangement of the Badung River, explained Rai Mantra, is meant to encourage people to keep the river clean and not to litter.

This does not only transform them to look beautiful, but also makes something that has the potential, as in Bindu River and Tukad River.

Now, they become a new potential and special attraction.

Onwards, the river arrangement will continuously be done by paying attention to the entire river flow that allows to be reorganized. If possible, they will be made river transporta-

tion such as small boats to further facilitate the transportation of river recreation. Besides, it will facilitate the community to traditional markets connected to the river. “So, this River Walk can be used as a potential of water in all aspects, whether the economic, education, transportation and health aspect. Acting Head of the Denpasar Public Works and Spatial Agency, Nyoman Ngurah Jimmy Sidarta, revealed the arrangement of river banks in essence can change the behavior of people who consider the river as a garbage dump. “With this arrangement, people are expected to no longer throw garbage into the river. Kelan sunset tourism to be boosted into leading potential

MANGUPURA - Kelan Beach, located adjacent to the Kedonganan Beach, has not been well known because the location is hidden near the end of the Ngurah Rai Airport’s runway.

However, the Kelan Beach does have potential that has not been widely known to the public.

According to Chief of Kelan customary village, Wayan Sukerena, when confirmed on Monday (Nov. 26), in the Kelan Beach area has indeed been developed the sunset tour by using traditional boats. In the future, he will boost the activity further because he admitted that so far the enthusiasm of visitors to enjoy sunset tour is

quite high.

From the data available, during winter season, this activity can be done in 4-6 trips a day. In which in one trip, each traditional boat can carry 7 - 12 people. “In the future, we are further boosting this to become our mainstay potential.

Though in other places have been using cruise ships, we will still use

traditional boats to make it more classic,” he concluded.

In addition to developing sunset tourism potential, his village will also arrange the stalls on the Kelan Beach. He will develop typical culinary potential of Kelan that is not owned by other regions.

Aside from increasing tourist visits to Kelan Beach, it will

continue to make arrangements.

It plans to cooperate with the Badung district government. “We are still coordinating the planning with social (pawongan) and environmental (palemahan) aspect so that later on the beach can accommodate the interests of Kelan community because it does not have extensive coastal area,” he concluded.

Sukerena added the concept of structuring is very simple because it wants to ‘sell’ Kelan Beach at af-

fordable price to community. Later, the beach will be open to general public as a place to play, exercise, swim and so on.

He revealed that currently Kelan Beach has camel and horse tourism rides. In the future, this potential will also be continuously developed. Breast cancer, disease with highest percentage among other cancers

MANGUPURA - Breast cancer is a disease with the highest percentage compared to other cancers in the world. From the existing research data during the period of January to September 2018, there were 627,000 people in the world suffering from breast cancer.

“A total of 42.1 percent of all cancers are breast cancer. And of the 42.1 percent, 17 percent of people with breast cancer died because they are already severe,” said Chairman of the Indonesian Breast Cancer Foundation (YKPI), Linda Amalia Sari Agum Gumelar, when giving exposure to a series of Astra Berseri Village Festival on Monday (Nov. 26) at the Widya Sabha Hall of Udayana University, Jimbaran.

According to data from Globalcan 2018, she said the breast cancer in the world has the highest percentage of new cases, reaching 42 percent. Meanwhile, for Indonesia breast cancer is the highest type of cancer equivalent to 30.9 percent or 58,256 of the total 188,231 new cases. For this reason, her YKPI foundation has a mission to achieve breast cancer-free Indonesia of advanced stage by 2030. “This is in accordance with the SDGs that must also be achieved in 2030,” he said.

In Indonesia, Linda said there are many deaths from breast cancer. Admittedly, approximately 70 percent died due to late handling.

Moreover, many of them are also

due to fear, and ignorance of the disease.

Gene-edited baby trial ‘paused’: China scientist

HONG KONG - The Chinese scientist who claims to have created the world’s first geneticallyedited babies said Wednesday the trial had been paused, following an international outcry over the highly controversial procedure.

He Jiankui defended his work in front of a packed Hong Kong biomedical conference, saying he had successfully altered the DNA of twin girls born to an HIV-positive father, an apparent medical first.

A total of eight volunteer couples -- HIV-positive fathers and HIV-negative mothers -- had signed up to the trial, with one dropping out before it was halted.

He said there had been “another potential pregnancy” involving a second couple, but when questioned further agreed it had been a chemical pregnancy -- a term referring to a very early miscarriage.

“I must apologise this result was leaked unexpectedly,” He said of the apparent breakthrough “The clinical trial was paused due to the current situation,” he added.

The conference has been upended by the gene-edited baby revelations claims, after university professor He posted a video claiming the twin girls -- born a few weeks ago -- had had their DNA altered to prevent them from contracting HIV.

The move prompted a heated debate among the scientific community, with many raising concerns over the lack of verified data and the risks of exposing healthy embryos to gene editing.

Editing human embryos can create unintended mutations in other areas -- so-called “off-target effects” -- which can be carried through to birth, experts warned.

But He took to the stage Wednesday to justify his work, and was bombarded with questions as he told the audience that the parents were aware of the potential dangers when they signed up.

“The volunteers were informed of the risk posed by the existence of one potential off-target and they decided to implant,” he said.

He also said the university where he works had been “unaware of the study’s conduct.”

Southern University of Science and Technology, in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, had earlier distanced itself from He, saying he had been on unpaid leave since February and had “seriously

violated academic ethics and codes of conduct”.

Organisers of the Second International Summit on Human Genome Editing, which opened Tuesday, also said they had been unaware of He’s work.

Conference moderator Robin Lovell-Badge said He’s trial was a “backward step” for the science industry, but described the babies’ birth as “momentous” nonetheless.

“This is an example of an approach that was not sufficiently careful and cautious and proportionate,” he said.

“Clearly however it is a point in history... These two babies would appear to be the first gene-edited babies. So it is a momentous point in history.”

Summit chair David Baltimore, a Nobel laureate, said there had been “a failure of self-regulation by the scientific community because of a lack of transparency.”

He’s claim would “be considered irresponsible”, Baltimore said. (afp)

MANILA - Rights groups raised fears Wednesday after Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte announced plans to create a “death squad” targeting suspected communist rebels, saying it would worsen the “calamity” triggered by his deadly drug war.

The Philippines’ 50-year fight against communist militants, one of Asia’s oldest insurgencies, long pre-dates his anti-narcotics crackdown that has killed thousands and drawn international censure.

Duterte, like previous governments, initially held peace talks with the communists but shelved negotiations last year over deadly attacks against soldiers and police.

In a speech Tuesday night, he took aim at the communist rebels’ hit squads known as “sparrow units”.

“What I lack is my own sparrow.

That is where they (communists) have an edge... So I will create my own sparrow, Duterte Death Squad against the sparrow,” the president said.

“I will match their talent also for assassinating people,” he added.

Philippine Defence Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said Wednesday his team would study the plan “very closely. Who will compose it, who will supervise it, who will be the targets,” adding there was “great danger of abuse”.

Since negotiations with the rebels broke down, Duterte also formally designated the Communist Party of the Philippines and its 3,800-member armed wing the

New People’s Army (NPA) as terrorist organisations.

The low-level, simmering insurgency has claimed 30,000 lives by the government’s count.

The founder of the Communist Party, Jose Maria Sison, said on Wednesday that “sparrow units” only existed in the 1970s and 1980s at the height of the insurgency.

“He is inventing so many sparrow units to justify his own death squads which are illegal,” Sison told ABS-CBN television.

The president’s announcement drew immediate concerns from campaigners, who said the death squad would worsen the already lethal environment encouraged by the drug war.

Police say they have killed nearly 5,000 alleged users and pushers, while rights groups say the toll is at least triple that and could amount to crimes against humanity.

“His (Duterte’s) statement is a declaration of open season against rebels, leftists, civilians, and critics of the government,” Human Rights Watch said in a statement.

“This new policy will only worsen the ongoing drug warfueled human rights calamity in the Philippines.”

Amnesty International also expressed alarm, citing the practice of labelling government critics as communist rebels or sympathisers.

Scientist’s gene-editing experiment sparks worry, outrage

It’s taken several years to gather data but the FDA now believes that textured breast implants may be more likely to cause ALCL, although it says smooth implants are also linked to an increased risk.

Hundreds of women with breast implants have developed a rare cancer

WHEN Michelle Forney’s breast started swelling and itching, doctors told her she had mastitis, a common infection, and treated her with antibiotics. When she discovered that she, in fact, had a rare form of lymphoma and that it was probably caused by her breast implant, she was both furious and frightened.

Forney is just one of hundreds of breast-implant recipients who have developed a rare blood cancer called anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL). The Food and Drug Administration has been investigating reports linking breast implants with the cancer, and now has more than 400 reports about patients who developed ALCL after having a breast implant, including nine who died.

“I had my breast implants for about 19 years. And everything was fine for many of those years until about three years ago,” when she developed major itching and pain in her breast, said Forney, who is 46 and lives in Sacramento.

“Come December of last year, I woke up one day and my breast was the size of a volleyball. Within a day it grew and just engorged,” Forney told NBC News. “So I immediately went back to the doctor, saw my OB-GYN and she brought in a breast specialist. And they said: ‘Oh, breast mastitis. You have an infection.’”

But a 10-day course of antibiotics did nothing to help.

Forney’s doctors did not link the symptoms to lymphoma, she

said, and mammograms showed no problem. It took several more visits to determine she had lymphoma.

Finally, after a plastic surgeon persuaded Forney to have her implants removed, dozens of tiny tumors were found around the implant.

Women choose to get breast implants either for breast reconstruction after mastectomy or for cosmetic reasons. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reported 400,000 breast implant procedures took place in 2017, up nearly 40 percent since 2000.

It’s taken several years to gather data but the FDA now believes that textured breast implants may be more likely to cause ALCL, although it says smooth implants are also linked to an increased risk. The trouble is that there’s no organized effort to put together data from people who have implants and those who have developed ALCL. “Many studies have looked to estimate risk and, depending on the source data and country, the global lifetime risk of developing breast-implant-associated ALCL for patients with textured breast implants ranges anywhere from 1 in 3,817 to 1 in 30,000,” the FDA said.

New data from Australia indicates as many as one in 1,000 people with breast implants may develop ALCL. The FDA said the implants available in Australia are different from those sold in the U.S., and that complicates efforts to figure out the true risks.

The FDA is holding public hearings on the issue next year to try to find out more about the potential links, and to ask people what should be done about it. So is the French government, and France’s national health authority is in the meantime recommending against the use of textured implants.

“One of the problems in the United States is … with patients going to different doctors at different times and the doctors aren’t necessarily communicating with each other and their medical records aren’t communicating with each other,” said Dr. Diana Zuckerman, president of the National Center for Health Research, a nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy organization based in Washington. “There’s really no way to know when women with breast implants get any number of health problems, including cancer.” (IBP/net)

HONG KONG - The scientific world erupted with outrage and concern Monday after a Chinese scientist claimed he used gene-editing to alter the DNA of a pair of twins who were born recently.

The scientist, He Jiankui of Southern University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen, China, said he used a DNA-editing tool called CRISPR to alter the genes of the twin girls to make them resistant to infection by the AIDS virus HIV. He plans to present more details later this week at a scientific meeting in Hong Kong.

Fertility researchers around the world were quick to denounce both the way He announced his work — with a YouTube video and in an interview with the Associated Press — and the work itself.

Scientists usually present their work in journals, which vet their data and methods and usually also invite other experts in the field to check for errors before it’s published.

The idea of permanently altering a baby’s DNA so that their own children also carry the change is controversial, if not abhorrent, to much of the world.

But some experts also say the furor surrounding the case shows it may be time to legalize such work and create a regulatory framework to ensure it is done safely and ethically.

China’s Southern University said it did not support the experiment. “The research work was carried out outside the school by Associate Professor He Jiankui. He did not report to the school and the department of biology, and the school and the biology department did not know about it,” it said in a statement. The university said it was investigating. Likewise, Rice University in Houston distanced itself from Michael Deem, a bioengineering professor there who said he collaborated with He on the project. “This research raises troubling scientific, legal and ethical questions,” the university said in a statement.

“Rice had no knowledge of this work. To Rice’s knowledge, none of

the clinical work was performed in the United States. Regardless of where it was conducted, this work as described in press reports, violates scientific conduct guidelines and is inconsistent with ethical norms of the scientific community and Rice University. We have begun a full investigation of Dr. Deem’s involvement in this research,” it added.

Other experts pointed out that the work was evidently done on healthy human embryos, and not to correct any genetic diseases. They said there is a difference between experimenting to save a life, and experimenting on babies out of scientific curiosity.

“If true, this experiment is monstrous,” said Julian Savulescu, an expert on bioethics at Britain’s Oxford University. “Gene editing itself is experimental and is still associated with off-target mutations, capable of causing genetic problems early and later in life, including the development of cancer. There are many effective ways to prevent HIV in healthy individuals: for example, protected sex. And there are effective treatments if one does contract it.”

Dr. Robert Winston, a fertility expert at Imperial College London, said the experiment amounted to scientific misconduct.

“It should be condemned,” he said in a statement.

Experts worry that permanently altering the germline — the genes that are passed on to children — can cause unanticipated problems for future generations.

Several European countries ban germline gene editing, while allowing gene therapy to treat disease in a patient without altering DNA likely to be passed along to offspring. The U.S. has a complex system that strongly discourages germline gene-editing in people. Congress has expressly forbidden the Food and Drug Administration to approve germline gene editing treatments involving people and that has had the effect of discouraging the work. (IBP/net)

MSMEs of Karangasem have not owned export market yet

AMLAPURA - The players of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) in Karangasem are quite a lot. However, until now the products do not yet have an export market as they can only touch the local market. This was revealed by the Head of Karangasem Cooperative and MSME Agency, Gede Ngurah Yudiantara, on Tuesday (Nov. 27).

He stated that actually many people in Karangasem are in business such as Asmat statue makers, ate craft products of Tenganan and others. Aside from the study, in Karangasem there are also MMSEs related to milk pie and snakefruit coffee products. It also includes snakefruit wine. However, the obstacle faced is that beyond harvest season the demands are too high, so they cannot fulfill. Vice versa, when the snakefruit harvest arrives, the production will be abundant

while the price is cheap.

in the export market.

“We need a connection to be able to market the products of the MSMEs to the export market. To that end, we will continuously follow the exhibitions available later.

The future billionaire lived with LOS ANGELES - Oprah Winfrey has thanked fans for their her grandmother until she was six “kind words” after her mother at the age of 83.

Winfrey posted a picture on Instagram of herself and her mother Vernita Lee at a family gathering.

She said: “Thank you all for your kind words and condolences regarding my mother Vernita Lee’s passing. It gives our family great comfort knowing she lived a good life and is now at Peace.”

A family spokesperson said Ms Lee had died at her Milwaukee home on 22 November, the same day as Thanksgiving, and that private funeral services had already been held.

No other details were given.

Ms Lee was a teenager when she gave birth to Winfrey in 1954.

before moving to Milwaukee to join her mother who was working as a maid.

Ms Lee featured on her daughter’s show in 1990, getting a makeover. She is survived by another daughter, Patricia Amanda, and four grandchildren. She had two other children, Jeffrey and Patricia, who died before her. (IBP/net)

Ancient Chinese painting auctioned for almost $60 million

HONG KONG - A nearly 1,000-year-old ink painting by one of China’s greatest literati masters Su Shi fetched US$59.5 million (HK$463,600,000) at auction, Christie’s said Monday. The auction house has described the Song Dynasty artwork created by Su as “one of the world’s rarest Chinese paintings”.

Entitled “Wood and Rock”, the ink-onpaper handscroll depicts a dragon-like old tree with withered branches and a sharp rock resting at its root.

The painting was the most expensive item ever sold in Christie’s Asia, it said.

Su Shi, also known as Su Dongpo, is one of the most important cultural figures in Chinese history and was an esteemed scholar, poet, prose-writer, painter, calligrapher and statesman.

The 185.5cm-long scroll is inscribed with calligraphy and the poems of four important literati of the 11th century in China, and also exhibits the seals of 41 collectors.

“The number of the works securely attributed to him are very few, probably only two or three. They are extremely rare,” Jonathan Stone, deputy chairman for Christie’s Asian art department, said in an earlier preview.

A crashed Lion Air jet should have been grounded over a recurrent technical problem before its fatal journey, Indonesian authorities said Wednesday, as details from the new jet’s flight data recorder suggested that pilots struggled to control its anti-stalling system.

The preliminary crash report from Indonesia’s transport safety agency also took aim at the budget carrier’s poor safety culture, but did not pinpoint a definitive cause of the October 29 accident, which killed all 189 people on board.

A final report is not likely to be filed until next year. The Boeing 737 MAX vanished from radar about 13 minutes after taking off from Jakarta, slamming into the Java Sea moments after pilots had asked to return to the capital.

Investigators said Lion Air kept putting the plane back into service despite repeatedly failing to fix a problem with the airspeed indicator, including on its second-last flight from Bali to Jakarta.

“The plane was no longer airworthy and it should not have kept flying,” Nurcahyo Utomo, aviation head at the National Transport Safety Committee, told reporters.

The findings will heighten concerns there were problems with key systems in one of the world’s newest and most advanced commercial passenger planes.

“But we don’t know yet whether it’s a Boeing or airline issue,” said aviation analyst Gerry Soejatman.

Investigators have previously said the doomed aircraft had problems with its airspeed indicator and angle of attack (AoA) sensors, prompting Boeing to issue a special bulletin telling operators what to do when they face the same situation.

The report confirmed that initial finding, saying the plane’s data recorder detected an issue with the AoA. It also said the plane’s “stick shaker” -- which vibrates the aircraft’s steering wheel-like control yoke to warn of a system malfunction -- was “activated and continued for most of the fight.”

An AoA sensor provides data about the angle at which air is passing over the wings and tells pilots how much lift a plane is getting. The information can be critical in preventing an aircraft from stalling.

The doomed plane’s flight data recorder showed that pilots had repeatedly tried to correct its nose

from pointing down, possibly after erroneous data from AoA sensors was fed into a system that automatically adjusts some of its movements.

- Dubious record Black box data showed the plane also had an airspeed indicator issue on multiple earlier flights, said investigators, who have yet to locate the cockpit voice recorder on the sea floor.

Lion must take steps “to improve the safety culture” and bolster the quality of its flight logs, the transport agency said. “Airlines need to take paperwork seriously,” Soejatman said.

“That didn’t cause the crash, but it can cause other problems in the environment they’re working in.”

Despite a dubious safety record and an avalanche of complaints

over shoddy service, the budget carrier’s parent Lion Air Group has captured half the domestic market in less than 20 years of operation to become Southeast Asia’s biggest airline.

Indonesia’s aviation safety record has improved since its airlines, including national carrier Garuda, were subject to years-long bans from US and European airspace for safety violations, although it has still recorded 40 fatal accidents over the past 15 years.
