Indonesia failed to predict severity of El Nino weather

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s weather agency failed to predict that the effects of the El Nino weather phenomenon this year would be worse than in 1997, a senior mininster said on Wednesday, as the government considers declaring a national emergency due to forest fires.

The fires raging across the archipelago have created a haze that has blanketed much of Southeast Asia in recent months and, according to authorities, have left more than half a million Indonesians suffering from respiratory ailments.

Luhut Panjaitan, the coordinating security minister tasked by President Joko Widodo with overseeing the government’s response to the crisis, said the state weather agency BMKG had not forecast the severity of the El Nino effect. “I must admit there was a mistake in the BMKG forecast that didn’t predict El Nino this year would be worse than 1997,” Panjaitan told reporters.

“Our forecast was wrong.”

DiCaprio finds joy in Macau project with De Niro, Scorsese

MACAU — Leonardo DiCaprio says being able to work with his two cinematic father figures on a short film commissioned for the opening of a Macau casino resort was “a slice of heaven.”

This has come about from a lack of instruction in Balinese language skills - both formal and informal. Prof. Suweta added that many Balinese language teachers are ill equipped to teach. “At a number of schools I have found teachers who are not certified to teach Balinese, but they teach anyway. That is the reality” he said.

Prof. Suweta therefore considers it very important that the government of Bali move swiftly away from simply talking about Balinese language instruction, towards actually providing Balinese language instructors for every village.

That way, Balinese culture, that strongly rooted in the Balinese language will stand a chance of surviving in the face of many other challenges.

“So far there has only been verbal discourse on the part of the provincial government when it comes to preserving local culture through language instruction. If the government does not take action soon, Balinese will likely get washed away in the tides of globalization,” he said.

He added that Balinese language instruction is in line with the 2013 concept for curriculum that includes character building. By learning Balinese, the younger generation will automatically be taught about ethics and moral values through the language. “It will be better if the younger generation can be directed to explore Balinese literature because it contains many ethical and moral teachings that can be extracted and applied to daily life,” he said. A lecturer of Balinese language at Undiksha, Dr. I Ketut Paramarta, asserted that Balinese language skills open up a wide range of professional options not just as lecturer or educator.

Balinese needs to remain the mother tongue and not the second language of the people of this island. Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses.

Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple.

Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Constipation drug extends survival for cancer patients

LOS ANGELES - A drug that is given to late-stage cancer patients to help ease the constipation brought on by morphine has been shown to extend their lives, researchers said Tuesday.

Methylnaltrexone, approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 2008 to treat opioid-induced constipation, could play a role in cancer therapy, said researchers who presented their findings at the meeting of the American Society of Anesthesiologists in San Diego.

“Early on, we began to suspect that methylnaltrexone might inhibit cancer growth,” said Jonathan Moss, lead author of the study and professor of anesthesia and critical care at the University of Chicago.

“After more than a decade in the lab trying to assess how methylnaltrexone affects cancer, we have the first evidence that it can decrease tumor growth and extend survival in patients who respond to the drug.”

The study was a retrospective survival analysis involving 229 patients across two randomized, controlled clinical trials on the relief of constipation for patients in the late stages of cancer and other terminal diseases.

Opioids like morphine are known to cause severe constipation that often cannot be relieved by traditional laxatives.

“In these two trials, 117 cancer patients received methylnaltrexone (marketed as Relistor) for opioidinduced constipation, while 112 were given a placebo,” said the study.

Just over half (57 percent) of those who received methylnaltrexone experienced relief from constipation. The other 43 percent did not.

“Those who received and responded to methylnaltrexone lived, on average, twice as long (118 days

versus 58 days) as those who did not respond or were given the placebo,” said the findings.

The drug did not have any lifeextending effects on patients with other illnesses like congestive heart failure, advanced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or neurologic diseases.

Researchers are not sure exactly how the drug works to extend life, and are continuing to study the matter.

British nutrition expert Elisabeth Lund said: “Very few people in Europe eat sufficient meat to fall into the high meat consumption category,” and stressed it remained a crucial source of iron and zinc.

Ian Johnson, a Britain-based nutrition researcher, added that “there is little or no evidence that vegetarians in the UK have a lower risk of bowel cancer than meat-eaters.”

The IARC’s cancer warning is the latest on a long list of troubles for the meat industry: from salmonella and “mad cow” scares, to dietary fat blamed for disease-causing high cholesterol and livestock methane emissions contributing to global warming. (afp)

Sausages, ham cause cancer, red meat ‘probably’ too PARIS - Sausages, ham and other processed meats cause bowel cancer, and red meat “probably” does too, a UN agency warned Monday, in a potentially heavy blow for the fastgrowing livestock industry.

A review of 800 studies from around the world found “sufficient evidence in humans that the consumption of processed meat causes colorectal cancer,” said the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).

The finding, it added, supports “recommendations to limit intake of meat” -- particularly in processed forms.

The category includes meat that has been salted, cured, fermented or smoked -- hot dogs, sausages, corned beef, dried meat like beef jerky or South African biltong, canned meat or meat-based sauces.

For every 50 grammes (1.8 ounces) of meat eaten on a daily basis, the population-wide risk of developing colon cancer was 18 percent higher, said the agency.

This meant enlarging the group of people likely to develop bowel cancer in their lifetime from six to seven out of every 100 who eat a three-rasher bacon sandwich every single day, explained statistician David Spiegelhalter of Cambridge University, who was not involved in the study.

The IARC agreed the cancer risk was statistically “small”, but “increases with the amount of meat consumed.”

For unprocessed red meat -- beef, veal, pork, lamb, mutton, horse or goat, the review found “strong” evidence of a link, but not convincing enough to place it in the group of confirmed cancer-causing agents which includes tobacco smoke, asbestos, and now also salami.

Aside from paddy plants, plantation crops are also facing harvest failure this dry season, especially in the area of Pupuan where local farmers predominantly grow coffee. Due to the extend dry season and prolonged heat, many coffee seedlings that farmers have cultivated have not flourished, but perished.

Extreme drought, coffee seedlings perish

TABANAN - Aside from paddy plants, plantation crops are also facing harvest failure this dry season, especially in the area of Pupuan where local farmers predominantly grow coffee. Due to the extend dry season and prolonged heat, many coffee seedlings that farmers have cultivated have not flourished, but perished.

A coffee farmer named Suardika form Pupaun, admitted that the mortality rate of coffee seedlings cultivated by farmers in Pupuan is about 60 percent. “I cultivated a total of 800 seedlings, most of which have perished” he said. Seedlings are not the only ones affected by the hope dry weather, coffee flowers have also started to fall early. The coffee harvest yields for 2016 have already slumped sharply compared to last year.

Farmers predicted that it would start to rain in October allowing the coffee seedlings and plants to thrive. Apparently these predictions were wrong, because it is already the end of Ocotber and there has yet to be any rain fall.

Due unpredictable weather conditions, Suardika said that many coffee farmers in Pupuan suffer great losses having spent up to IDR 3,000 per coffee seedling. “A decline in revenue is certain because many flowers have fallen off the coffee plants, which means that the plants will produce less beans,” he explained.

Coffee farmers in Pupuan took measures to counter act the weather challenges, such as watering their plants manually and installing paranets to block the seedlings form direct sunlight. Unfortunately, the se measures failed to result in positive outcomes. “Plants continue to die. Similar measures were taken with other crops such as cacao and sugar snakefruit that failed to grow this season,” said the man that also cultivates a variety of other plantation commodities.

Farmers are at a loss as to how to help their plants. Last year there was already rain by October so the plants were alright. “This year the heat has been extreme, and even though we are used to being out in the garden, many farmers found that it just too hot to continue working,” explained Suardika.

Since the weather is unpredictable many farmers have resigned themselves to loosing crops. “Normally we have a schedule that we follow for giving the plants fertilizer and such, but with such unpredictable weather we cannot plan anything,” he said.

Local coffee beans show a lot of potential for export even though Balinese coffee is still only used as a buffer for other coffee sources.

This however means that our coffee prices remain stable at IDR 22,000 per kilo and will possibly go up in December to the lack of beans produced this year. (kmb24)

National data also recorded that of the 240 million populations of Indonesia, 6.7 million men pay or sex. Anywhere from 2-20 percent of the people being paid are adult men while there is an estimated 230,000 female sex workers in Indonesia.The fact of men paying for sex from stingers is the key factor in the transmission of HIV/AIDS to their partners and eventually to their children.

Apart from prostitution, general unprotected sex is another major contributing factor in the transmission of HIV and other STI’s (sexually transmuted infections).

“Enganging in unprotected sex

means that one person with HIV/ Aids or other STIS’ can transmit their disease to upward of 300 people- indirectly,” said Division Head of the Disease Control and Environmental Health (P2PL), Gde Wira Sunetra from the Bali Health Office, recently.

The most frequently occurring STI’s include gonorrhea in men, syphilis and bacterial vaginosis in women that causes a smelly vaginal discharge and intense itching.

Preventive efforts that can be taken by the government include providing teenage health care, and health knowledge to youth of 14-25 years old as well as reproductive health education in educational institutions by working with with the Ministry of National Education. To suppress the number HIV/ AIDS cases in Bali, it is not enough

to provide treatment, knowledge is essential in preventing transmission. The government has already facilitated access to contraceptives (condoms). “Ten to fifteen years ago the only place to get condoms was form public health centres, but now they can be found at mini marts,” he said.

Physician and lecturer in andrology and sexology in the School of Medicine at Udayana University, I Gusti Ngurah Pramesemara, is also a volunteer at Kisara. Pamesemara said that the results of Kirsara’s research by Kisara indicated that 96.9 percent of teenagers in Denpasar know about the hazards of the STIs but they still engage in sexual intercourse without using a condom because they say that they are hard to find and also that there is a stigma attached to using them and also that they find it inconvenient.

“This information indicates that we still need to provide education about just how important it is to use condoms,” he said.

There is fear that if there is limited access to condoms then the the number of people who contract STIs and HIV/AIDS will increase. (kmb42)

Seoul, Tokyo bickering days before 3-way summit with China

Hectares of plantation and forest on fire BANGLI - The dry season of the last few months has made many plantations and forest in some areas subseptible to fires.

Kintamani is one such area, where thousands of trees that normally produce oxygen and absorb water, have been damaged or destroyed by fires.

Based on the data of the Bangli Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), a total of eight fires have hit the region of Bangli this dry season, destroying some 48 hectares of land, mostly plantations and forests. Some of forests devastated by fires are located within the territory of the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) at Buahan, Kintamani, a protected forest under the forest management unit of East Bali at Abang Batudinding as well as the protected forest at Sukawana village. Most of the forest areas on fire were overgrown with shrubs, grass, pine and white eucalyptus.

Section Head of Region II of the BKSDA Bali, Catur Marbawa, when contacted on Tuesday (Oct. 27) said that the forest fires in the BKSDA areas all occurred during this dry season. He added that of the total 2,500 hectares of forest land in the territory of the BKSDA, approximately five hectares have been damaged by fires.

He suspects that most of the fires were started by people who were burning materials near the forest areas, and spread into the bush.

In order to prevent forest fires the BKSDA have taken several measures including disseminating information to the public about the need to participate in forest conservation of the common good.

Forests are not only beneficial for one or two people, but also the whole community. “We’re still trying to maintain good relations with communities that live near these forests, so that when there is a fire incident, the public can report it to to us and assist in extinguishing it,” he explained.

Besides, maintaining the forests amid frequent fire incidents over the years, the BKSDA has also established ten reservoirs eight of which are located in the Penelokan forest area, with two others on Mount Batur. The reservoirs with a capacity of approximately 5,000 liters of water, are used to help put out fires. (kmb40)

Students from SMAN 2 Banjar process waste into oil

SINGARAJA - More and more people in Buleleng are learning about how to process waste into economically valuable goods. Garbage is not only sorted for recycling but is also processed into oil that can be used as an alternative source of fuel by distilling plastic waste.

Waste treatment techniques was invented by a group of students of the SMAN 2 Banjar high school that incorporated into the Student Group Caring for Environment (KSPL).

The invention that turns plastic waste into alternative fuel was demonstrated before the Deputy Regent of Buleleng, Nyoman Sutjidra, at their local school, on Tuesday (Oct. 27). The Deputy Regent was accompanied by the Head of the Buleleng Education Agency, Wayan Lugraheni to watch the presentation.

Before the Deputy Regent and his entourage, the students showed off the different stages of the distillation process that runs in a very simple manner. They used materials like drums and used pipe arranged in such a way that water vapour was produced from the cooled plastic waste combustion.

Then, the droplets of this steam are alternative oil.

Damar, accompanied by the KSPL instructor Nyoman Terima, said that his students had watched a plastic waste processing technique that can produce alternative oil. The students then experimented with this technique until they came up with their contraption. It was inspired by a television program about equipment used to process waste into oil.

The equipment being shown on television was very large. So, inspired by the program, Terima tried to teach his students the technique and in fact satisfactory results came out of the teaching. “The equipment that the students came up with was inspired by the television show. We made a smaller scale version and it really works,” he said.

During the experiment, Nyoman Damar explained not all the plastic waste can be processed into oil through this distillation technique. He only processed ( through combustion) plastic waste that cannot be sold. This

includes plastics used to package food and candy wrappers, while plastic in the form of glasses and bottles is not processed but sold per kilogram. “From the experiment, our students found that they can only process the kind of plastic waste used for candy or food wrapper into oil,” he said.

After witnessing the demonstration, Deputy Regent of Buleleng, Nyoman Sutjidra, said that he was proud of the achievement of the students of the SMAN 2 Banjar and appreciates the value of processing plastic waste into oil that can be used for everyday life.

To facilitate the development of the students, invention, the Buleleng Education Agency was asked to provide research funding, so that this waste processing equipment can be perfected and their research becomes be optimized.

“Imagine if such waste processing equipment could be made available to all schools, a lot more oil could be produced. Not to mention how much this would help waste management.

I ask the agency to create a program and allocate funding to support improvements to the research conducted by the students of the SMAN 2 Banjar,” said Sutjidra. (mud)

South Korea and Japan finally announced Wednesday what has long been rumored — a three-way leaders’ meeting with China this weekend in Seoul — but details are still scarce with just days to go. And the Seoul-Tokyo bilateral meeting, their first formal talks at this level in 3½ years? A brief Monday morning talk, breaking before lunch. It wasn’t even on the initial schedule released by Tokyo, though a spokesman later confirmed the meeting.

The lead-up to the summit has seen the South Korean and Japanese foreign ministries publicly dodging questions even as diplomats leaked barbed tidbits to reporters behind the scenes.

The bickering confounds some observers because even though these summits are often devoid of substance, there is high symbolic importance in leaders from these powerful neighbors setting aside their many differences and putting on a good show. China and Japan have the world’s No. 2 and 3 biggest economies, respectively. South Korea and Japan are strong U.S. allies and Washington’s military and diplomatic bulwark in an unsteady region. All three have a keen interest in containing North Korea’s nuclear bomb ambitions.

The problem this week, as is often the case in Northeast Asia, appears to be history, and specifically the inability of Seoul and Tokyo to

settle disputes stemming from Japan’s brutal colonial rule of Korea in the early 20th century.

Newspapers in Japan reported that the spat centered on Tokyo balking at Seoul’s pressure for Japan to make some sort of concession on the issue of Korean women forced into sex slavery by Japan’s military leading up to and during World War II. Many in South Korea feel that past Japanese apologies and attempts at recompense have fallen well short. This feeling has been compounded by a widespread view that conservative Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is whitewashing Japan’s wartime atrocities.

South Korea announced that President Park Geun-hye and Abe will meet Monday, a day after they both meet with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang. Seoul has provided few other details but emphasized that the sex slave issue would be on the agenda. Japanese media have reported that Seoul suggested a meeting of just 30 minutes because Tokyo wouldn’t cave on the sex slave issue.

South Korean Ambassador to Japan Yoo Heung-soo, in a speech in Tokyo on Monday, urged Abe to make concessions on the issue when he meets with Park.

Germany to oblige banks to offer accounts to refugees

BERLIN - Germany’s cabinet signed off on a draft law on Wednesday which will make it easier for hundreds of thousands of asylum seekers in the country to set up bank accounts.

Under the new rules, everyone will have the right to access basic banking services, including the homeless and people who fall under the protection of the Geneva Convention on Refugees.

This means that migrants will be able to open accounts at any bank, enabling them to deposit and withdraw cash, carry out bank transfers, set up direct debits and make payments with cards.

Germany expects between 800,000 to one million people, many fleeing war zones in the

Middle East and Africa, to arrive this year, although not all of them will be given asylum. Giving refugees access to current accounts is seen as a vital first step to help them integrate them into society.

“Those who don’t have a bank account, don’t have good prospects on the labour market. Hunting for a flat is also a problem for many people without an account,” said Justice Minister Heiko Maas.

In Germany, the number of people without a bank account is in the high six figures, according to estimates by the European Commission, and that figure is expected to rise due to the influx of refugees.

Until now, only a few saving banks, which are publicly owned or controlled, have accepted refugees

as customers. Asylum seekers were often turned away by other banks since they had no fixed address or lacked the necessary documents.

Under the draft law, which must be approved by parliament to go into effect, all banks that offer current accounts would be obliged to do so for a wider group of consumers.

Last month, Germany’s financial watchdog Bafin said it was going to allow banks to accept a broader spectrum of documents, such as papers provided by Germany’s immigration authorities.

The draft law also obliges banks to become more transparent about their charges and make it easier for customers to change bank accounts.(rtr)

Price of mangoes goes Asia traders run for safety up due to dry season as US data fuels worries

HONG KONG - Weak US economic data dented confidence on Asian trading floors Wednesday, sending investors running for safe investments ahead of policy announcements by the Federal Reserve and Japan’s central bank.

Dealers are nervous heading into the corporate earnings season, with equities and currency markets having suffered their worst quarter for four years during July-September.

Analysts warned against reading too much into better than expected sales in China for online giant Alibaba, which came in the face of a growth slowdown in the world’s number two economy.

While global markets have en-

joyed a broadly healthy run in October on expectations the Fed will delay raising interest rates until next year, another batch of figures indicating a stuttering US economic recovery dampened sentiment.

On Tuesday the US Conference Board said an index of consumer confidence fell in September owing to a gloomier outlook for the economy, while the Commerce Department said durable goods orders

dipped for a second straight month.

The figures come after a Labor Department report at the start of the month showed jobs growth was weaker than expected in September, increasing the chances the Fed will keep rates on hold until the new year.

Wednesday sees its second-last policy meeting before the end of 2015.

“I don’t think the Fed is going to risk tightening policy this year,” Nader Naeimi, the Sydney-based head of dynamic asset allocation at AMP Capital Investors Ltd, told Bloomberg News.

Tuesday’s data also led to losses on Wall Street. The Dow shed 0.24 percent, the S&P 500 dipped 0.26 percent and the Nasdaq eased 0.09 percent.

In Asia Wednesday high-yielding but riskier assets were hit.

The dollar climbed against emerging-market units. The Malaysian ringgit fell 0.44 percent and the South Korean won lost 0.05 percent, while New Zealand’s dollar was off 0.51 percent Australia’s dollar lost one percent against the greenback after inflation in the country remained weak and came in below forecasts, fanning

speculation the central bank will cut borrowing costs next week.

But the US unit eased to 120.35 yen, from 120.48 yen in New York and well off the 120.71 yen earlier Tuesday in Asia. The euro was at $1.1035 and 132.86 yen from $1.1041 and 133.02 yen in US trade.

That is well off the $1.1070 and 133.46 yen in Tokyo Tuesday.

The strengthening of the yen -- sen as a safe-haven currency -comes before the Bank of Japan’s policy gathering that ends Friday, with pressure on board members to increase stimulus to kickstart the sluggish economy. (afp)

iPhone sales fuel Apple profit boost

SAN FRANSISCO - Apple said Tuesday that surging iPhone sales helped propel a sharp rise in quarterly profits, as the tech giant delivered a record 48 million of the smartphones.

Profits rose 31 percent to $11.1 billion, while revenues jumped 22 percent from a year ago to $51.5 billion, Apple said.

The California tech giant, which in September unveiled revamped versions of the iPhone, said the number of units sold jumped 22 percent from last year while revenues lifted 36 percent.

Apple, the world’s biggest company by market value, gave back early after-hours gains and dipped 0.2 percent to $114.30 on the results.

Chief executive Tim Cook said Apple closed the books on its fiscal year, calling it “Apple’s most successful year ever,” following strong iPhone sales and a range of new or upgraded devices.

“We are heading into the holidays with our strongest product lineup yet, including iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, Apple Watch with an expanded lineup of cases and bands, the new iPad Pro and the all-new Apple TV, which begins shipping this week,” Cook said in a statement.

For the full fiscal year ending in September, Apple booked a whopping $53.4 billion profit, up 35 percent, while revenues rose 28 percent to $233.7 billion.

Some $12.5 billion in revenue came from China -- down five percent from the past quarter but double the level of a year ago.

Cook said the fiscal year showed “our largest absolute revenue growth ever” and was helped by “huge inroads into emerging markets generating over $79 billion of revenue and growing 63 percent despite very strong headwinds from foreign exchange.”

The iPhone was the key driver for Apple, bringing in more than 60 percent of its revenues for the past quarter. But iPad unit sales fell 20 percent in the quarter to 9.9 million units.

For its traditional computers, Apple sold an all-time record 5.7 million Macs in the quarter.

No specific sales figures were given for the Apple Watch, but the results showed revenue from “other” products was $3 billion over the same period.

Cook visited China last week and said Apple will continue to invest in the country despite slowing growth in the world’s secondlargest economy.

The launch of the company’s large-screen iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus last year boosted its sales in China, though it faces sharp competition from domestic competitors such as Xiaomi and Huawei.

Many stalls have already opened to sell mangoes harvested by local farmers. The mangoes being sold are of large and sweet and in great demand.

Mango seller, Luh Ami, disclosed that she and other sellers started to open their stalls since a month ago, whereas mango season in the area actually started last July. Due to the crop failure that a number of mango growers from Tamblang village experienced, she took the initiative to look for mangoes from Depeha and Bukti village. “Tamblang village mangoes are well known for their good quality but lately farmers have been experiencing harvest failure, so we have only been able to sell mangoes from Depeha and Bukti village for the last month,” said Ami on Tuesday (Oct. 27).

Allegedly the mango crop failure was caused by drought in Buleleng.

Mango flowers that start in nodes, should grow into fruit, but because of the scorching heat and lack of water, the mango flowers withered and dried up. “I have been selling mangoes for ten years ago, this is

the first time that Tamblang has seen total crop failure. Last year, the mango harvest was normal and it was easy to find these fruit,” she said.

Ami gets round the problem of the lack of mangoes by looking for large and salable mangoes from Sangsit village in Sawan and Buleleng. She has to adjust her prices accordingly so that she still makes a profit. “I have to get mangoes from Sangsit village. Many urban mangoes are being sold to villages because many village mangoes did not produce this year,” she said.

The price of mangoes doubled from IDR 6,000 per kg to IDR 15,000 per kg. As a result, sellers are having a hard time, as buyers are reluctant to pay such high prices.

Generally, mango stocks can be sold in a week, but now many have to wait a month to sell all their mangoes, she added. (kmb34)

BANGLI - The dry season that many predict will go on for longer than usual, not only poses a threat to people but also has an impact on agricultural land. In Paketan hamlet, Sukawana, Kintamani, for example, tens of hectares of tangerine plants

are in danger of dying from lack of water.

As seen on Tuesday (Oct. 27), the tangerine orchards that spread out the hilly area have leaves that look yellow and curly. Many trees looked dried up and some of the fruit has

shrivelled. The soil looks parched and clearly lacks water.

Local farmer, I Nyoman Serangan, said that most of the local people in the region rely on tangerine plants for their income, very few people rely on other commodities.

This dry season has caused a lot of frustration. His tangerine trees that are a few months old, have withered and contain no water. Some have even fallen. Certainly, this year, he will not get any fruits from his orchard that is spread over 0.70 hectare. “This dry season has really hit hard and I will not get any results at all,” he complained.

Serangan added that the tangerine trees started to whiter two months ago as the dry season started heating up. “If it does not rain within fifteen days, the tangerine trees will definitely die,” he said while shaking his head.

This prolonged dry season leaves farmers unable to do very much.

There is are no natural sources of water and the cost of buying water is just too high. Selling tangerines for IDR 2,500 per kg does not provide enough money to buy water.

“If we only had to buy water once, that wouldn’t be a problem. However, this has been going on for two months. Of course, this drought aggravates the challenges that farmers already face. In addition, the price of tangerines has dropped,” he added.

This middle-aged man said that

tangerine trees here wither a little every dry season. However, condition in the previous years were not as severe as this year. Farmers could still earn an income albeit small. “This year, farmers cannot earn anything at all,” he said while adding that his only source of income is running a small stall.

Similar sentiments were expressed by another farmer, I Nengah Merdana who said that this dry season has had a really bad impact on the fate of farmers. Since the soil has dried up, farmers can only sit and watch as their tangerine trees wait to die. “Farmers are distraught over this condition. We can only hope that it will rain soon,” he said.

Headman of Sukawana, I Ketut Nonog, confirmed that this drought is having negative impacts on agricultural land, especially tangerine plantations. Many farmers have failed to harvest. When the weather supports agriculture, the results of tangerines can reach as much as IDR 150 million per hectare. But now there are absolutely no yields. “Due to this drought, tens of hectares of tangerine plants are threatened with death. Hopefully, it will rain soon,” he concluded. (kmb45)

AU report cites mass graves, cannibalism in South Sudan

JUBA — African Union investigators discovered mass graves in South Sudan and found evidence of horrific crimes, including forced cannibalism, according to a long-awaited report.

President Salva Kiir’s faction in the conflict is also accused of recruiting an irregular tribal force before the outbreak of war in December 2013.

The report, released late Tuesday, also disputes that there was a coup attempt in December 2013 by former Vice President Riek Machar.

Government troops carried out organized killings of members of the ethnic Nuer in Juba, the capital, the report said. When violence broke out, Machar, a Nuer, became a rebel leader. He and Kiir, an ethnic Dinka, recently signed a peace agreement.

The African Union investigators, led by former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, found that the conflict began on Dec. 15, 2013, as a skirmish broke out between Dinka and Nuer soldiers of the presidential guard following political tension between Kiir and Machar, who had been fired as Kiir’s deputy the previous July.

The report was scheduled for release months ago but its release

was delayed by the African Union’s Peace and Security Council.

Hundreds of Nuer men were rounded up and shot, and mass graves were discovered. Perpetrators — described as government forces or their allies — allegedly tortured their victims, including by forcing them to jump in fires or eat human flesh, according to the report.

The killings were “an organized military operation that could not have been successful without concerted efforts from various actors in the military and government circles,” the report said. “Roadblocks or checkpoints were established all around Juba and house to house searches were undertaken by security forces. During this operation male Nuers were targeted, identified, killed on the spot or gathered in one place and killed.”

The report said Minister of Defense Kuol Manyang Juuk described a shadowy “group (that had) organized itself as Rescue the President. It killed most people here (in Juba) — from 15th to 18th.

It was even more powerful than organized forces.”

The group comprised some Dinka soldiers who had been mobilized following a 2012 border crisis with northern neighbor Sudan. Some of these soldiers were moved south to Kiir’s private farm near Juba in 2013 and later participated in the killings, the report said, citing interviews with informants.

Amid the Juba killings, Machar fled the capital and mobilized an insurgency which committed revenge attacks against the Dinka, sparking a cycle of violence in Bor, Malakal, and Bentiu towns which also included rape and murder of people in churches and hospitals, according to the report. Those revenge attacks occurred so quickly they were also likely coordinated, it added. Kiir and Machar signed a peace agreement in August but fighting continues. (ap)

Nepal’s parliament elects nation’s first female president

KATHMANDU — A Communist leader who has long campaigned for women’s rights was elected Wednesday as Nepal’s first female president.

Bidhya Devi Bhandari of the Communist Party of Nepal Unified Marxist-Leninist received 327 votes against her opponent’s 214 in parliament on Wednesday, Parliament Speaker Onsari Gharti announced.

The president is the ceremonial head in Nepal while the prime minister is the nation’s leader.

Bhandari, 54, is the deputy leader of the party led by Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli, who was elected earlier this month and leads a coalition government.

The new constitution adopted last month required Nepal to name a new president.

Bhandari is an active campaigner for women’s rights in Nepal and was among the politicians who campaigned for ensuring women’s

rights in the new constitution. The document says one-third of the member in parliament have to be women and either the president or vice president must be a woman.

She has been a leading political figure since her husband Madan Bhandari, who was then leader of the party, was killed in a still unsolved car accident in 1993.

She also led many demonstrations against the then King Gyanendra in 2006 that finally ended his authoritarian rule and restored democracy.

Bhandari is Nepal’s second president since the Himalayan nation was turned into a republic after abolishing the centuries-old monarchy. The first president, Ram Baran Yadav, was elected in 2008 and was supposed to be in office for two years. But preparing and adopting the constitution took seven years because of differences between political parties. (ap)

Often deliberately set by plantation companies and smallholders, the fires have been burning for weeks in the forests and carbon-rich peat lands of Sumatra and Kalimantan islands. Recently, they have spread to places like Papua.

For nearly two months, thousands of fires caused by slash-and-burn farming in Indonesia have choked vast expanses of Southeast Asia, forcing schools to close and scores of flights and some international events to be cancelled.

An estimated half a million people have suffered respiratory illnesses since the fires started in July. Indonesia’s disaster agency

previously stated the fires had killed 10 people, some of whom died while fighting the blazes and others from the pollution.

But the country’s social minister confirmed Wednesday the death toll had risen.

“As of this morning, there are nineteen people who have died from the effects of haze,” Khofifah Indar Parawansa told reporters in Jakarta.

The victims were all from Sumatra and Kalimantan -- Indonesia’s half of Borneo island -- where fires have been deliberately lit by farmers wanting to quickly and cheaply clear land.

President Joko Widodo plans to tour the worst-hit regions later this week, having cut short his visit to the United States to deal with the crisis.

Three warships are on standby in Kalimantan in case a large-scale evacuation is needed, with temporary shelters being rapidly built to house those fleeing the

toxic smog.

Experts warn the current outbreak is on track to become the worst ever, exacerbated by bone-dry conditions caused by the El Nino weather phenomenon.

Indonesia’s security minister Luhut Panjaitan also admitted Wednesday the country’s weather agency had failed to predict this year’s El Nino would be more severe than 1997, when out-of-control fires sent pollution soaring to record highs in an unprecedented environmental disaster. (afp)

Indonesians take fight against haze into their own hands PALANGKARAYA - Desperate civilians at the epicentre of Indonesia’s haze crisis are taking the fight into their own hands, using whatever meagre resources they have to confront the fires ravaging their communities as they tire of waiting for the government to take action.

Wearing an oversized T-shirt and ill-fitting rubber boots, 13-year-old Yosua Oktavianus assisted his father douse a fire burning outside their hometown in Borneo as acrid smoke belched from the scorched earth.

“I just want to help my dad,” he told AFP near Palangkaraya, a city of 240,000 where respiratory illnesses have soared as the smog has worsened in recent weeks.

Communities worst exposed to the toxic smog are becoming increasingly frustrated at authorities in Jakarta, insisting not enough is being done to aid their plight.

The government has launched water-bombing raids dumping water over blazes on Borneo and neighbouring Sumatra but has failed so far to bring thousands of fires under

control.

It has also sent warships to Kalimantan -- Indonesia’s half of Borneo island -- in case large-scale evacuations are needed, but many on the ground are choosing to fight not flee, using wooden sticks, pails of water and anything else on hand to douse the flames.

After watching children and the elderly in his hometown fall sick under the pall of haze -- just some of the estimated half a million people who have suffered respiratory illnesses since the fires started in July -- 20-year-old Fery Auyadi decided enough was enough.

Banding together with his friends, the college students pooled their resources and collected donations for supplies before heading to the fire front.

“My friends and I were fed up of waiting for the government to act,” he told AFP, dripping in sweat and mud as he battled a blaze outside Palangkaraya, adding: “It is now everybody’s fight.”

ed to reports of new fires and set off in pickup trucks, passing through a ruined, smoking landscape of charred earth and smouldering tree stumps.

The team scrambled to find water, a scarce resource on these tinder-dry peatlands, until a well was found at a nearby construction site.

As the team assembled the water pump, Sayban, who was wearing neither a firesuit or proper mask, stomped the smoking ground.

“At least my boots are heat resistant,” the firefighter, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, told AFP. Just as the ten-strong team arrived, reports of another blaze breaking out nearby came in. Working around the clock on a tight budget, and with limited equipment at hand, they know if the fires become too big they can do nothing but stand by and watch it burn.

In Palangkaraya, where many have fled since the smoke blanketing their town turned an eerie yellow, there are calls for those responsible for this environmental catastrophe to

be punished, but local authorities are reluctant to point fingers.

Fires are deliberately lit every year by farmers seeking to quickly and cheaply clear their land to plant crops, particularly palm oil and pulp and paper plantations, but this year’s blazes are on track to become the worst on record.

A prolonged dry season has seen widespread fires sweep Kalimantan and Sumatra, destroying 1.7 million hectares and killing 19 people so far, some of whom died while fighting the blazes and others from the pollution. Indonesia last month revoked the licence of a timber supplier and suspended the operations of three palm oil plantation operators over the fires, which have sent haze as far as Thailand and the Philippines, but catching people on the ground has proved far more difficult.

Angry residents in the heart of the haze crisis have blamed both major corporations and local farmers for the disaster, and want justice served.

“If you want to stop this disaster from happening again, you need to

put the culprits in jail for a long time, revoke their license and confiscate their lands,” local resident Andi told AFP. The local government conservation agency in Palangkaraya declined to answer when asked by AFP who was behind the massive blazes, and why more perpetrators weren’t being caught. “It’s not the time to point fingers, it’s the time to act,” agency head Nandang Prihadi said.

But conservation group Borneo Futures said it was unlikely internationally-listed companies were responsible for the fires.

Scientist Erik Meijaard said medium-scale plantation owners trying to expand their land may have asked farmers to burn the land on their behalf.

“So who is to blame? The guy who brings the jerrycan with fuel and a box of matches, the guy paying him to do that, or the company or politicians behind the people who pay?” he told AFP. “Difficult to see and probably very context dependent.” (afp)

Repsol, title sponsor of Marc Marquez’s factory Honda team, has condemned Valentino Rossi’s actions during Sunday’s Malaysian MotoGP. The pair clashed when title leader Rossi, frustrated at Marquez’s constant overtakes for third place, deliberately forced the Spaniard wide on lap 7 of 20.

Contact was made, with Marquez falling.

Earlier in the weekend Rossi had accused Marquez of helping his title

rival Jorge Lorenzo, also adding some personal insults, setting the scene for Sunday’s battle. Repsol, like Marquez and Honda, insist that Rossi kicked the #93, causing him to crash. Rossi denies kicking Marquez, saying his leg moved after the contact and when Marquez was already falling.

Race Direction declared the TV footage to be inconclusive and thus accepted Rossi’s claim that he did not intend for Marquez to fall.

But since forcing Marquez wide resulted in an accident - deliberate or not - Rossi was given three Penalty Points. He will now start from last place at the Valencia title showdown with Lorenzo, due to already having one Penalty Point from Misano. Repsol clearly expected a stronger punishment.

In a post-race statement titled ‘Pedrosa wins and Marquez crashes after unsportsmanlike kick from Rossi’ the petroleum company

branded the Italian’s actions as “absolutely unacceptable” and called for “strong regulation... which punishes behaviour like that seen today clearly and decisively”.

Repsol even hinted that it could reconsider its 40-year involvement in the sport, which includes title sponsorship of the factory Honda team since 1995.

“Repsol are deeply saddened that situations like that which occurred today in Sepang exist, especially as the company feel proud of sporting values: Companionship, competitive spirit and commitment from riders.

Without these values, it would not make sense for Repsol to participate in the sport as a sponsor.” The full statement can be seen below: “Dani Pedrosa achieved a great victory today in the Malaysian Grand Prix - a win that was unfortunately overshadowed by the unacceptable and unsportsmanlike conduct of Valentino Rossi against Repsol Honda Team rider, Marc Marquez.

Sp rt Premier League champion Chelsea and Arsenal exit League Cup Chelsea’s miserable start to the season continued on Tuesday after it was knocked out in the fourth round of the English League Cup on penalties by 10-man Stoke. The defending Premier League and League Cup champion lost 5-4 in the shootout, with key playmaker Eden Hazard missing the all-important fifth spot kick for his side.

“A few months ago I won a few matches and I was champion. People were saying there are things more important than results. Now, people say results are the most important thing,” Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said after his side slipped to an eighth defeat in 16 matches this season.

GENEVA — Seven men are in the running to replace Sepp Blatter as FIFA president, with Michel Platini’s candidature accepted but pending because of his suspension from soccer.

FIFA published the list of valid applications “proposed in due time and form” on Wednesday. It did not include former Trinidad and Tobago player David Nakhid, who did not have the five required nominations.

The seven candidates for the Feb. 26 election are: Platini, Prince Ali bin alHussein, Gianni Infantino, Tokyo Sexwale, Musa Bility, Jerome Champagne and Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa.

FIFA’s three-man election panel, led by audit committee chairman Domenico Scala, will announce next month which of the seven candidates have been officially accepted after integrity checks by the FIFA ethics committee. Three of the candidates are from Europe, two are from Africa and two from Asia.

Platini, who was suspended for 90 days this month by the FIFA ethics committee, has been accepted pending the outcome of an investigation into financial wrongdoing.

“Given that Michel Platini is currently provisionally banned from tak-

ing part in any football-related activity, his candidature will not be processed by the ad-hoc electoral committee as long as such ban is valid and in force,” FIFA said in a statement.

Platini was the favorite until he and Blatter were questioned by Swiss federal police on Sept. 25 over a suspected “disloyal payment” from FIFA in 2011. The UEFA president got about $2 million approved by Blatter as uncontracted salary for work he did as a presidential adviser at least nine years earlier.

Platini denies wrongdoing and is appealing against the suspension. Blatter was also banned for 90 days.

Platini’s right-hand man at UEFA, general secretary Infantino, entered the FIFA contest on Monday.

Nakhid was considered an outsider in the contest but the one most likely to bring a player’s perspective to the job. And although he had the five required nominations, one of his backers broke election rules by also supporting another candidate.

“In view of this, the (election) committee decided not to consider Mr. Nakhid’s application as it did not fulfil the required five declarations of support,” FIFA said in a statement. (ap)

BOLOGNA — Mauro Icardi ended his goalscoring drought to help Inter Milan move provisionally back to the top of the Italian league on Tuesday following a 1-0 win at relegation-threatened Bologna.

It was Inter’s first win in five matches and came despite playing the final half hour with 10 men after Felipe Melo was sent off following a somewhat harsh second booking.

“We had to win and it was a poor match but, luckily, this goal gave us the win,” said Inter captain Icardi, who hadn’t scored in 348 minutes.

“In the first half we played at a low tempo, while in the second half we went out with the right determination and we showed that, even in 10, we are competi-

tive. Even though, obviously, it’s always better to play in 11.

“Was my goal a response to those who said I was in crisis?

When the ball comes to me, I can score. In 10 matches I’ve received four decent passes and scored three goals, so I think it’s a good average. Now I will invite Ljajic to dinner, he gave me a good assist.”

Inter played poorly in the first half and, although the visitors raised their game after the break, their chances of getting something from the match appeared to diminish following the dismissal but they took the lead just seven minutes later.

Koeman hints at first Ramirez start in over 18 months Southampton manager Ronald Koeman has heaped praise on midfielder Gaston Ramirez’s professionalism and hinted he might hand the 24-year-old his first start for the Saints in more than 18 months in Wednesday’s League Cup clash against Aston Villa.

Ramirez made his first appearances of the season for Southampton in the Premier League in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with

Liverpool, coming on as a secondhalf substitute to set up Sadio Mane’s late equaliser.

The Uruguay international, who spent last season on loan at Hull City, was heavily linked with a move away from the Saints during the summer as his time in England has been plagued by injuries and questions about his attitude.

“I was always positive about his individual qualities as a player,” Koeman told the club’s website (www. saintsfc.co.uk).

“Sometimes I had my doubts about his physical (ability) in the Premier League because a lot of time he had injuries -- he was on loan to Hull City last year because it was difficult. “What I like from Gaston is, with all that kind of problems and with not a lot of opportunities, he was always working hard. He was always a very good professional.

“That’s important and then I am the first to give him that chance to play, that opportunity, if he is okay.”

Koeman said he felt Aston Villa were too hasty when they sacked Tim Sherwood on Sunday after just 10 league games.

“Most of the time to change the manager is not better for the team or better for the club,” Koeman said. “All the managers know, it’s a difficult job, a difficult function in the club, a lot of pressure. “You need understanding, you need support and to do this kind of decision after 10 games in my opinion is too fast.”

The 52-year-old Dutchman admitted he doesn’t know what to expect from Villa as a change in manager might prompt a different approach.

“It’s a different competition and everybody knows we take it seriously,” Koeman said. “Normally (a change of manager) gives always a reaction to the team.

“Players who aren’t involved in the last few weeks maybe will get a chance under the new manager.

That’s possible, but we know every game is difficult.”(rtr)

The defending Premier League and League Cup champion lost 5-4 in the shootout, with key playmaker Eden Hazard missing the all-important fifth spot kick for his side.

GENEVA — Seven men are in the running to replace Sepp Blatter as FIFA president, with Michel Platini’s candidature accepted but pending because of his suspension from soccer.

FIFA published the list of valid applications “proposed in due time and form” on Wednesday. It did not include former Trinidad and Tobago player David Nakhid, who did not have the five required nominations.

The seven candidates for the Feb. 26 election are: Platini, Prince Ali bin alHussein, Gianni Infantino, Tokyo Sexwale, Musa Bility, Jerome Champagne and Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa.

FIFA’s three-man election panel, led by audit committee chairman Domenico Scala, will announce next month which of the seven candidates have been officially accepted after integrity checks by the FIFA ethics committee. Three of the candidates are from Europe, two are from Africa and two from Asia.

Platini, who was suspended for 90 days this month by the FIFA ethics committee, has been accepted pending the outcome of an investigation into financial wrongdoing.

“Given that Michel Platini is currently provisionally banned from tak-

ing part in any football-related activity, his candidature will not be processed by the ad-hoc electoral committee as long as such ban is valid and in force,” FIFA said in a statement.

Platini was the favorite until he and Blatter were questioned by Swiss federal police on Sept. 25 over a suspected “disloyal payment” from FIFA in 2011. The UEFA president got about $2 million approved by Blatter as uncontracted salary for work he did as a presidential adviser at least nine years earlier.

Platini denies wrongdoing and is appealing against the suspension. Blatter was also banned for 90 days.

Platini’s right-hand man at UEFA, general secretary Infantino, entered the FIFA contest on Monday.

Nakhid was considered an outsider in the contest but the one most likely to bring a player’s perspective to the job. And although he had the five required nominations, one of his backers broke election rules by also supporting another candidate.

“In view of this, the (election) committee decided not to consider Mr. Nakhid’s application as it did not fulfil the required five declarations of support,” FIFA said in a statement. (ap)

BOLOGNA — Mauro Icardi ended his goalscoring drought to help Inter Milan move provisionally back to the top of the Italian league on Tuesday following a 1-0 win at relegation-threatened Bologna.

It was Inter’s first win in five matches and came despite playing the final half hour with 10 men after Felipe Melo was sent off following a somewhat harsh second booking.

“We had to win and it was a poor match but, luckily, this goal gave us the win,” said Inter captain Icardi, who hadn’t scored in 348 minutes.

“In the first half we played at a low tempo, while in the second half we went out with the right determination and we showed that, even in 10, we are competi-

tive. Even though, obviously, it’s always better to play in 11.

“Was my goal a response to those who said I was in crisis?

Kvitova Czechs in at WTA Finals with Safarova win

Repsol, title sponsor of Marc Marquez’s factory Honda team, has condemned Valentino Rossi’s actions during Sunday’s Malaysian MotoGP. The pair clashed when title leader Rossi, frustrated at Marquez’s constant overtakes for third place, deliberately forced the Spaniard wide on lap 7 of 20.

Contact was made, with Marquez falling.

Earlier in the weekend Rossi had accused Marquez of helping his title

rival Jorge Lorenzo, also adding some personal insults, setting the scene for Sunday’s battle. Repsol, like Marquez and Honda, insist that Rossi kicked the #93, causing him to crash. Rossi denies kicking Marquez, saying his leg moved after the contact and when Marquez was already falling.

Race Direction declared the TV footage to be inconclusive and thus accepted Rossi’s claim that he did not intend for Marquez to fall.

But since forcing Marquez wide resulted in an accident - deliberate or not - Rossi was given three Penalty Points. He will now start from last place at the Valencia title showdown with Lorenzo, due to already having one Penalty Point from Misano. Repsol clearly expected a stronger punishment.

In a post-race statement titled ‘Pedrosa wins and Marquez crashes after unsportsmanlike kick from Rossi’ the petroleum company

branded the Italian’s actions as “absolutely unacceptable” and called for “strong regulation... which punishes behaviour like that seen today clearly and decisively”.

Repsol even hinted that it could reconsider its 40-year involvement in the sport, which includes title sponsorship of the factory Honda team since 1995.

“Repsol are deeply saddened that situations like that which occurred today in Sepang exist, especially as the company feel proud of sporting values: Companionship, competitive spirit and commitment from riders.

Without these values, it would not make sense for Repsol to participate in the sport as a sponsor.” The full statement can be seen below: “Dani Pedrosa achieved a great victory today in the Malaysian Grand Prix - a win that was unfortunately overshadowed by the unacceptable and unsportsmanlike conduct of Valentino Rossi against Repsol Honda Team rider, Marc Marquez.

“On the seventh lap of the race, with Marquez and Rossi immersed in a battle for third place that involved several overtaking moves between the two, the Italian - in an absolutely intentional action - dealt an unsportsmanlike kick to the Repsol Honda rider that knocked him to the ground.

AU report cites mass graves, cannibalism in South Sudan

JUBA — African Union investigators discovered mass graves in South Sudan and found evidence of horrific crimes, including forced cannibalism, according to a long-awaited report.

President Salva Kiir’s faction in the conflict is also accused of recruiting an irregular tribal force before the outbreak of war in December 2013.

The report, released late Tuesday, also disputes that there was a coup attempt in December 2013 by former Vice President Riek Machar.

Government troops carried out organized killings of members of the ethnic Nuer in Juba, the capital, the report said. When violence broke out, Machar, a Nuer, became a rebel leader. He and Kiir, an ethnic Dinka, recently signed a peace agreement.

The African Union investigators, led by former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, found that the conflict began on Dec. 15, 2013, as a skirmish broke out between Dinka and Nuer soldiers of the presidential guard following political tension between Kiir and Machar, who had been fired as Kiir’s deputy the previous July.

The report was scheduled for release months ago but its release

was delayed by the African Union’s Peace and Security Council.

Hundreds of Nuer men were rounded up and shot, and mass graves were discovered. Perpetrators — described as government forces or their allies — allegedly tortured their victims, including by forcing them to jump in fires or eat human flesh, according to the report.

The killings were “an organized military operation that could not have been successful without concerted efforts from various actors in the military and government circles,” the report said. “Roadblocks or checkpoints were established all around Juba and house to house searches were undertaken by security forces. During this operation male Nuers were targeted, identified, killed on the spot or gathered in one place and killed.”

The report said Minister of Defense Kuol Manyang Juuk described a shadowy “group (that had) organized itself as Rescue the President. It killed most people here (in Juba) — from 15th to 18th.

It was even more powerful than organized forces.”

The group comprised some Dinka soldiers who had been mobilized following a 2012 border crisis with northern neighbor Sudan. Some of these soldiers were moved south to Kiir’s private farm near Juba in 2013 and later participated in the killings, the report said, citing interviews with informants.

Amid the Juba killings, Machar fled the capital and mobilized an insurgency which committed revenge attacks against the Dinka, sparking a cycle of violence in Bor, Malakal, and Bentiu towns which also included rape and murder of people in churches and hospitals, according to the report. Those revenge attacks occurred so quickly they were also likely coordinated, it added. Kiir and Machar signed a peace agreement in August but fighting continues. (ap)

Death toll from haze upgrades to 19 JAKARTA - The death toll from acrid haze blanketing parts of Indonesia has climbed to 19, a minister said Wednesday, almost double the previous figure as the crisis from widespread forest fires worsens.

Nepal’s parliament elects nation’s first female president

KATHMANDU — A Communist leader who has long campaigned for women’s rights was elected Wednesday as Nepal’s first female president.

Bidhya Devi Bhandari of the Communist Party of Nepal Unified Marxist-Leninist received 327 votes against her opponent’s 214 in parliament on Wednesday, Parliament Speaker Onsari Gharti announced.

The president is the ceremonial head in Nepal while the prime minister is the nation’s leader.

Bhandari, 54, is the deputy leader of the party led by Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli, who was elected earlier this month and leads a coalition government.

The new constitution adopted last month required Nepal to name a new president.

Bhandari is an active campaigner for women’s rights in Nepal and was among the politicians who campaigned for ensuring women’s

rights in the new constitution. The document says one-third of the member in parliament have to be women and either the president or vice president must be a woman.

She has been a leading political figure since her husband Madan Bhandari, who was then leader of the party, was killed in a still unsolved car accident in 1993.

She also led many demonstrations against the then King Gyanendra in 2006 that finally ended his authoritarian rule and restored democracy.

Bhandari is Nepal’s second president since the Himalayan nation was turned into a republic after abolishing the centuries-old monarchy. The first president, Ram Baran Yadav, was elected in 2008 and was supposed to be in office for two years. But preparing and adopting the constitution took seven years because of differences between political parties. (ap)

The national disaster management agency said it expected the fires to be completely extinguished by the end of November or early December. Haze-hit provinces have begun seeing rainfall, which authorities hope will help government efforts to combat the fires.

Indonesia has deployed warships to evacuate infants and other vulnerable residents of haze-hit areas but the evacuations will be a last resort if authorities are unable to provide care for those suffering from respiratory ailments. (rtr)

Nineteen people have died fighting the fires, and the El Nino effects have exacerbated the dry season making it harder to extinguish the fires.

Often deliberately set by plantation companies and smallholders, the fires have been burning for weeks in the forests and carbon-rich peat lands of Sumatra and Kalimantan islands. Recently, they have spread to places like Papua.

For nearly two months, thousands of fires caused by slash-and-burn farming in Indonesia have choked vast expanses of Southeast Asia, forcing schools to close and scores of flights and some international events to be cancelled.

An estimated half a million people have suffered respiratory illnesses since the fires started in July. Indonesia’s disaster agency

previously stated the fires had killed 10 people, some of whom died while fighting the blazes and others from the pollution.

But the country’s social minister confirmed Wednesday the death toll had risen.

“As of this morning, there are nineteen people who have died from the effects of haze,” Khofifah Indar Parawansa told reporters in Jakarta.

The victims were all from Sumatra and Kalimantan -- Indonesia’s half of Borneo island -- where fires have been deliberately lit by farmers wanting to quickly and cheaply clear land.

President Joko Widodo plans to tour the worst-hit regions later this week, having cut short his visit to the United States to deal with the crisis.

Three warships are on standby in Kalimantan in case a large-scale evacuation is needed, with temporary shelters being rapidly built to house those fleeing the

toxic smog.

Experts warn the current outbreak is on track to become the worst ever, exacerbated by bone-dry conditions caused by the El Nino weather phenomenon.

Indonesia’s security minister Luhut Panjaitan also admitted Wednesday the country’s weather agency had failed to predict this year’s El Nino would be more severe than 1997, when out-of-control fires sent pollution soaring to record highs in an unprecedented environmental disaster. (afp)

Indonesians take fight against haze into their own hands PALANGKARAYA - Desperate civilians at the epicentre of Indonesia’s haze crisis are taking the fight into their own hands, using whatever meagre resources they have to confront the fires ravaging their communities as they tire of waiting for the government to take action.

Wearing an oversized T-shirt and ill-fitting rubber boots, 13-year-old Yosua Oktavianus assisted his father douse a fire burning outside their hometown in Borneo as acrid smoke belched from the scorched earth.

“I just want to help my dad,” he told AFP near Palangkaraya, a city of 240,000 where respiratory illnesses have soared as the smog has worsened in recent weeks.

Communities worst exposed to the toxic smog are becoming increasingly frustrated at authorities in Jakarta, insisting not enough is being done to aid their plight.

The government has launched water-bombing raids dumping water over blazes on Borneo and neighbouring Sumatra but has failed so far to bring thousands of fires under

control.

It has also sent warships to Kalimantan -- Indonesia’s half of Borneo island -- in case large-scale evacuations are needed, but many on the ground are choosing to fight not flee, using wooden sticks, pails of water and anything else on hand to douse the flames.

After watching children and the elderly in his hometown fall sick under the pall of haze -- just some of the estimated half a million people who have suffered respiratory illnesses since the fires started in July -- 20-year-old Fery Auyadi decided enough was enough.

Banding together with his friends, the college students pooled their resources and collected donations for supplies before heading to the fire front.

“My friends and I were fed up of waiting for the government to act,” he told AFP, dripping in sweat and mud as he battled a blaze outside Palangkaraya, adding: “It is now everybody’s fight.”

ed to reports of new fires and set off in pickup trucks, passing through a ruined, smoking landscape of charred earth and smouldering tree stumps.

The team scrambled to find water, a scarce resource on these tinder-dry peatlands, until a well was found at a nearby construction site.

As the team assembled the water pump, Sayban, who was wearing neither a firesuit or proper mask, stomped the smoking ground.

“At least my boots are heat resistant,” the firefighter, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, told AFP. Just as the ten-strong team arrived, reports of another blaze breaking out nearby came in. Working around the clock on a tight budget, and with limited equipment at hand, they know if the fires become too big they can do nothing but stand by and watch it burn.

In Palangkaraya, where many have fled since the smoke blanketing their town turned an eerie yellow, there are calls for those responsible for this environmental catastrophe to

be punished, but local authorities are reluctant to point fingers.

Fires are deliberately lit every year by farmers seeking to quickly and cheaply clear their land to plant crops, particularly palm oil and pulp and paper plantations, but this year’s blazes are on track to become the worst on record.

A prolonged dry season has seen widespread fires sweep Kalimantan and Sumatra, destroying 1.7 million hectares and killing 19 people so far, some of whom died while fighting the blazes and others from the pollution. Indonesia last month revoked the licence of a timber supplier and suspended the operations of three palm oil plantation operators over the fires, which have sent haze as far as Thailand and the Philippines, but catching people on the ground has proved far more difficult.

Angry residents in the heart of the haze crisis have blamed both major corporations and local farmers for the disaster, and want justice served.

“If you want to stop this disaster from happening again, you need to

put the culprits in jail for a long time, revoke their license and confiscate their lands,” local resident Andi told AFP. The local government conservation agency in Palangkaraya declined to answer when asked by AFP who was behind the massive blazes, and why more perpetrators weren’t being caught. “It’s not the time to point fingers, it’s the time to act,” agency head Nandang Prihadi said.

But conservation group Borneo Futures said it was unlikely internationally-listed companies were responsible for the fires.

Scientist Erik Meijaard said medium-scale plantation owners trying to expand their land may have asked farmers to burn the land on their behalf.

“So who is to blame? The guy who brings the jerrycan with fuel and a box of matches, the guy paying him to do that, or the company or politicians behind the people who pay?” he told AFP. “Difficult to see and probably very context dependent.” (afp)

Price of mangoes goes Asia traders run for safety up due to dry season as US data fuels worries

HONG KONG - Weak US economic data dented confidence on Asian trading floors Wednesday, sending investors running for safe investments ahead of policy announcements by the Federal Reserve and Japan’s central bank.

Dealers are nervous heading into the corporate earnings season, with equities and currency markets having suffered their worst quarter for four years during July-September.

Analysts warned against reading too much into better than expected sales in China for online giant Alibaba, which came in the face of a growth slowdown in the world’s number two economy.

While global markets have en-

joyed a broadly healthy run in October on expectations the Fed will delay raising interest rates until next year, another batch of figures indicating a stuttering US economic recovery dampened sentiment.

On Tuesday the US Conference Board said an index of consumer confidence fell in September owing to a gloomier outlook for the economy, while the Commerce Department said durable goods orders

dipped for a second straight month.

The figures come after a Labor Department report at the start of the month showed jobs growth was weaker than expected in September, increasing the chances the Fed will keep rates on hold until the new year.

Wednesday sees its second-last policy meeting before the end of 2015.

“I don’t think the Fed is going to risk tightening policy this year,” Nader Naeimi, the Sydney-based head of dynamic asset allocation at AMP Capital Investors Ltd, told Bloomberg News.

Tuesday’s data also led to losses on Wall Street. The Dow shed 0.24 percent, the S&P 500 dipped 0.26 percent and the Nasdaq eased 0.09 percent.

In Asia Wednesday high-yielding but riskier assets were hit.

The dollar climbed against emerging-market units. The Malaysian ringgit fell 0.44 percent and the South Korean won lost 0.05 percent, while New Zealand’s dollar was off 0.51 percent Australia’s dollar lost one percent against the greenback after inflation in the country remained weak and came in below forecasts, fanning

speculation the central bank will cut borrowing costs next week.

But the US unit eased to 120.35 yen, from 120.48 yen in New York and well off the 120.71 yen earlier Tuesday in Asia. The euro was at $1.1035 and 132.86 yen from $1.1041 and 133.02 yen in US trade.

That is well off the $1.1070 and 133.46 yen in Tokyo Tuesday.

The strengthening of the yen -- sen as a safe-haven currency -comes before the Bank of Japan’s policy gathering that ends Friday, with pressure on board members to increase stimulus to kickstart the sluggish economy. (afp)

iPhone sales fuel Apple profit boost

SAN FRANSISCO - Apple said Tuesday that surging iPhone sales helped propel a sharp rise in quarterly profits, as the tech giant delivered a record 48 million of the smartphones.

Profits rose 31 percent to $11.1 billion, while revenues jumped 22 percent from a year ago to $51.5 billion, Apple said.

The California tech giant, which in September unveiled revamped versions of the iPhone, said the number of units sold jumped 22 percent from last year while revenues lifted 36 percent.

Apple, the world’s biggest company by market value, gave back early after-hours gains and dipped 0.2 percent to $114.30 on the results.

Chief executive Tim Cook said Apple closed the books on its fiscal year, calling it “Apple’s most successful year ever,” following strong iPhone sales and a range of new or upgraded devices.

“We are heading into the holidays with our strongest product lineup yet, including iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, Apple Watch with an expanded lineup of cases and bands, the new iPad Pro and the all-new Apple TV, which begins shipping this week,” Cook said in a statement.

For the full fiscal year ending in September, Apple booked a whopping $53.4 billion profit, up 35 percent, while revenues rose 28 percent to $233.7 billion.

Some $12.5 billion in revenue came from China -- down five percent from the past quarter but double the level of a year ago.

Cook said the fiscal year showed “our largest absolute revenue growth ever” and was helped by “huge inroads into emerging markets generating over $79 billion of revenue and growing 63 percent despite very strong headwinds from foreign exchange.”

The iPhone was the key driver for Apple, bringing in more than 60 percent of its revenues for the past quarter. But iPad unit sales fell 20 percent in the quarter to 9.9 million units.

For its traditional computers, Apple sold an all-time record 5.7 million Macs in the quarter.

No specific sales figures were given for the Apple Watch, but the results showed revenue from “other” products was $3 billion over the same period.

Cook visited China last week and said Apple will continue to invest in the country despite slowing growth in the world’s secondlargest economy.

The launch of the company’s large-screen iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus last year boosted its sales in China, though it faces sharp competition from domestic competitors such as Xiaomi and Huawei.

Many stalls have already opened to sell mangoes harvested by local farmers. The mangoes being sold are of large and sweet and in great demand.

Mango seller, Luh Ami, disclosed that she and other sellers started to open their stalls since a month ago, whereas mango season in the area actually started last July. Due to the crop failure that a number of mango growers from Tamblang village experienced, she took the initiative to look for mangoes from Depeha and Bukti village. “Tamblang village mangoes are well known for their good quality but lately farmers have been experiencing harvest failure, so we have only been able to sell mangoes from Depeha and Bukti village for the last month,” said Ami on Tuesday (Oct. 27).

Allegedly the mango crop failure was caused by drought in Buleleng.

Mango flowers that start in nodes, should grow into fruit, but because of the scorching heat and lack of water, the mango flowers withered and dried up. “I have been selling mangoes for ten years ago, this is

the first time that Tamblang has seen total crop failure. Last year, the mango harvest was normal and it was easy to find these fruit,” she said.

Ami gets round the problem of the lack of mangoes by looking for large and salable mangoes from Sangsit village in Sawan and Buleleng. She has to adjust her prices accordingly so that she still makes a profit. “I have to get mangoes from Sangsit village. Many urban mangoes are being sold to villages because many village mangoes did not produce this year,” she said.

The price of mangoes doubled from IDR 6,000 per kg to IDR 15,000 per kg. As a result, sellers are having a hard time, as buyers are reluctant to pay such high prices.

Generally, mango stocks can be sold in a week, but now many have to wait a month to sell all their mangoes, she added. (kmb34)

BANGLI - The dry season that many predict will go on for longer than usual, not only poses a threat to people but also has an impact on agricultural land. In Paketan hamlet, Sukawana, Kintamani, for example, tens of hectares of tangerine plants

are in danger of dying from lack of water.

As seen on Tuesday (Oct. 27), the tangerine orchards that spread out the hilly area have leaves that look yellow and curly. Many trees looked dried up and some of the fruit has

shrivelled. The soil looks parched and clearly lacks water.

Local farmer, I Nyoman Serangan, said that most of the local people in the region rely on tangerine plants for their income, very few people rely on other commodities.

This dry season has caused a lot of frustration. His tangerine trees that are a few months old, have withered and contain no water. Some have even fallen. Certainly, this year, he will not get any fruits from his orchard that is spread over 0.70 hectare. “This dry season has really hit hard and I will not get any results at all,” he complained.

Serangan added that the tangerine trees started to whiter two months ago as the dry season started heating up. “If it does not rain within fifteen days, the tangerine trees will definitely die,” he said while shaking his head.

This prolonged dry season leaves farmers unable to do very much.

There is are no natural sources of water and the cost of buying water is just too high. Selling tangerines for IDR 2,500 per kg does not provide enough money to buy water.

“If we only had to buy water once, that wouldn’t be a problem. However, this has been going on for two months. Of course, this drought aggravates the challenges that farmers already face. In addition, the price of tangerines has dropped,” he added.

This middle-aged man said that

tangerine trees here wither a little every dry season. However, condition in the previous years were not as severe as this year. Farmers could still earn an income albeit small. “This year, farmers cannot earn anything at all,” he said while adding that his only source of income is running a small stall.

Similar sentiments were expressed by another farmer, I Nengah Merdana who said that this dry season has had a really bad impact on the fate of farmers. Since the soil has dried up, farmers can only sit and watch as their tangerine trees wait to die. “Farmers are distraught over this condition. We can only hope that it will rain soon,” he said.

Headman of Sukawana, I Ketut Nonog, confirmed that this drought is having negative impacts on agricultural land, especially tangerine plantations. Many farmers have failed to harvest. When the weather supports agriculture, the results of tangerines can reach as much as IDR 150 million per hectare. But now there are absolutely no yields. “Due to this drought, tens of hectares of tangerine plants are threatened with death. Hopefully, it will rain soon,” he concluded. (kmb45)

Seoul, Tokyo bickering days before 3-way summit with China

Hectares of plantation and forest on fire BANGLI - The dry season of the last few months has made many plantations and forest in some areas subseptible to fires.

Kintamani is one such area, where thousands of trees that normally produce oxygen and absorb water, have been damaged or destroyed by fires.

Based on the data of the Bangli Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), a total of eight fires have hit the region of Bangli this dry season, destroying some 48 hectares of land, mostly plantations and forests. Some of forests devastated by fires are located within the territory of the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) at Buahan, Kintamani, a protected forest under the forest management unit of East Bali at Abang Batudinding as well as the protected forest at Sukawana village. Most of the forest areas on fire were overgrown with shrubs, grass, pine and white eucalyptus.

Section Head of Region II of the BKSDA Bali, Catur Marbawa, when contacted on Tuesday (Oct. 27) said that the forest fires in the BKSDA areas all occurred during this dry season. He added that of the total 2,500 hectares of forest land in the territory of the BKSDA, approximately five hectares have been damaged by fires.

He suspects that most of the fires were started by people who were burning materials near the forest areas, and spread into the bush.

In order to prevent forest fires the BKSDA have taken several measures including disseminating information to the public about the need to participate in forest conservation of the common good.

Forests are not only beneficial for one or two people, but also the whole community. “We’re still trying to maintain good relations with communities that live near these forests, so that when there is a fire incident, the public can report it to to us and assist in extinguishing it,” he explained.

Besides, maintaining the forests amid frequent fire incidents over the years, the BKSDA has also established ten reservoirs eight of which are located in the Penelokan forest area, with two others on Mount Batur. The reservoirs with a capacity of approximately 5,000 liters of water, are used to help put out fires. (kmb40)

Students from SMAN 2 Banjar process waste into oil

SINGARAJA - More and more people in Buleleng are learning about how to process waste into economically valuable goods. Garbage is not only sorted for recycling but is also processed into oil that can be used as an alternative source of fuel by distilling plastic waste.

Waste treatment techniques was invented by a group of students of the SMAN 2 Banjar high school that incorporated into the Student Group Caring for Environment (KSPL).

The invention that turns plastic waste into alternative fuel was demonstrated before the Deputy Regent of Buleleng, Nyoman Sutjidra, at their local school, on Tuesday (Oct. 27). The Deputy Regent was accompanied by the Head of the Buleleng Education Agency, Wayan Lugraheni to watch the presentation.

Before the Deputy Regent and his entourage, the students showed off the different stages of the distillation process that runs in a very simple manner. They used materials like drums and used pipe arranged in such a way that water vapour was produced from the cooled plastic waste combustion.

Then, the droplets of this steam are alternative oil.

Damar, accompanied by the KSPL instructor Nyoman Terima, said that his students had watched a plastic waste processing technique that can produce alternative oil. The students then experimented with this technique until they came up with their contraption. It was inspired by a television program about equipment used to process waste into oil.

The equipment being shown on television was very large. So, inspired by the program, Terima tried to teach his students the technique and in fact satisfactory results came out of the teaching. “The equipment that the students came up with was inspired by the television show. We made a smaller scale version and it really works,” he said.

During the experiment, Nyoman Damar explained not all the plastic waste can be processed into oil through this distillation technique. He only processed ( through combustion) plastic waste that cannot be sold. This

includes plastics used to package food and candy wrappers, while plastic in the form of glasses and bottles is not processed but sold per kilogram. “From the experiment, our students found that they can only process the kind of plastic waste used for candy or food wrapper into oil,” he said.

After witnessing the demonstration, Deputy Regent of Buleleng, Nyoman Sutjidra, said that he was proud of the achievement of the students of the SMAN 2 Banjar and appreciates the value of processing plastic waste into oil that can be used for everyday life.

To facilitate the development of the students, invention, the Buleleng Education Agency was asked to provide research funding, so that this waste processing equipment can be perfected and their research becomes be optimized.

“Imagine if such waste processing equipment could be made available to all schools, a lot more oil could be produced. Not to mention how much this would help waste management.

I ask the agency to create a program and allocate funding to support improvements to the research conducted by the students of the SMAN 2 Banjar,” said Sutjidra. (mud)

South Korea and Japan finally announced Wednesday what has long been rumored — a three-way leaders’ meeting with China this weekend in Seoul — but details are still scarce with just days to go. And the Seoul-Tokyo bilateral meeting, their first formal talks at this level in 3½ years? A brief Monday morning talk, breaking before lunch. It wasn’t even on the initial schedule released by Tokyo, though a spokesman later confirmed the meeting.

The lead-up to the summit has seen the South Korean and Japanese foreign ministries publicly dodging questions even as diplomats leaked barbed tidbits to reporters behind the scenes.

The bickering confounds some observers because even though these summits are often devoid of substance, there is high symbolic importance in leaders from these powerful neighbors setting aside their many differences and putting on a good show. China and Japan have the world’s No. 2 and 3 biggest economies, respectively. South Korea and Japan are strong U.S. allies and Washington’s military and diplomatic bulwark in an unsteady region. All three have a keen interest in containing North Korea’s nuclear bomb ambitions.

The problem this week, as is often the case in Northeast Asia, appears to be history, and specifically the inability of Seoul and Tokyo to

settle disputes stemming from Japan’s brutal colonial rule of Korea in the early 20th century.

Newspapers in Japan reported that the spat centered on Tokyo balking at Seoul’s pressure for Japan to make some sort of concession on the issue of Korean women forced into sex slavery by Japan’s military leading up to and during World War II. Many in South Korea feel that past Japanese apologies and attempts at recompense have fallen well short. This feeling has been compounded by a widespread view that conservative Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is whitewashing Japan’s wartime atrocities.

South Korea announced that President Park Geun-hye and Abe will meet Monday, a day after they both meet with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang. Seoul has provided few other details but emphasized that the sex slave issue would be on the agenda. Japanese media have reported that Seoul suggested a meeting of just 30 minutes because Tokyo wouldn’t cave on the sex slave issue.

South Korean Ambassador to Japan Yoo Heung-soo, in a speech in Tokyo on Monday, urged Abe to make concessions on the issue when he meets with Park.

In response, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters that “Japan’s position on the issue has not changed.” Suga

BERLIN - Germany’s cabinet signed off on a draft law on Wednesday which will make it easier for hundreds of thousands of asylum seekers in the country to set up bank accounts.

Under the new rules, everyone will have the right to access basic banking services, including the homeless and people who fall under the protection of the Geneva Convention on Refugees.

This means that migrants will be able to open accounts at any bank, enabling them to deposit and withdraw cash, carry out bank transfers, set up direct debits and make payments with cards.

Germany expects between 800,000 to one million people, many fleeing war zones in the

Middle East and Africa, to arrive this year, although not all of them will be given asylum. Giving refugees access to current accounts is seen as a vital first step to help them integrate them into society.

“Those who don’t have a bank account, don’t have good prospects on the labour market. Hunting for a flat is also a problem for many people without an account,” said Justice Minister Heiko Maas.

In Germany, the number of people without a bank account is in the high six figures, according to estimates by the European Commission, and that figure is expected to rise due to the influx of refugees.

Until now, only a few saving banks, which are publicly owned or controlled, have accepted refugees

as customers. Asylum seekers were often turned away by other banks since they had no fixed address or lacked the necessary documents.

Under the draft law, which must be approved by parliament to go into effect, all banks that offer current accounts would be obliged to do so for a wider group of consumers.

Last month, Germany’s financial watchdog Bafin said it was going to allow banks to accept a broader spectrum of documents, such as papers provided by Germany’s immigration authorities.

The draft law also obliges banks to become more transparent about their charges and make it easier for customers to change bank accounts.(rtr)

Constipation drug extends survival for cancer patients

LOS ANGELES - A drug that is given to late-stage cancer patients to help ease the constipation brought on by morphine has been shown to extend their lives, researchers said Tuesday.

Methylnaltrexone, approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 2008 to treat opioid-induced constipation, could play a role in cancer therapy, said researchers who presented their findings at the meeting of the American Society of Anesthesiologists in San Diego.

“Early on, we began to suspect that methylnaltrexone might inhibit cancer growth,” said Jonathan Moss, lead author of the study and professor of anesthesia and critical care at the University of Chicago.

“After more than a decade in the lab trying to assess how methylnaltrexone affects cancer, we have the first evidence that it can decrease tumor growth and extend survival in patients who respond to the drug.”

The study was a retrospective survival analysis involving 229 patients across two randomized, controlled clinical trials on the relief of constipation for patients in the late stages of cancer and other terminal diseases.

Opioids like morphine are known to cause severe constipation that often cannot be relieved by traditional laxatives.

“In these two trials, 117 cancer patients received methylnaltrexone (marketed as Relistor) for opioidinduced constipation, while 112 were given a placebo,” said the study.

Just over half (57 percent) of those who received methylnaltrexone experienced relief from constipation. The other 43 percent did not.

“Those who received and responded to methylnaltrexone lived, on average, twice as long (118 days

versus 58 days) as those who did not respond or were given the placebo,” said the findings.

The drug did not have any lifeextending effects on patients with other illnesses like congestive heart failure, advanced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or neurologic diseases.

Researchers are not sure exactly how the drug works to extend life, and are continuing to study the matter.

British nutrition expert Elisabeth Lund said: “Very few people in Europe eat sufficient meat to fall into the high meat consumption category,” and stressed it remained a crucial source of iron and zinc.

Ian Johnson, a Britain-based nutrition researcher, added that “there is little or no evidence that vegetarians in the UK have a lower risk of bowel cancer than meat-eaters.”

The IARC’s cancer warning is the latest on a long list of troubles for the meat industry: from salmonella and “mad cow” scares, to dietary fat blamed for disease-causing high cholesterol and livestock methane emissions contributing to global warming. (afp)

Sausages, ham cause cancer, red meat ‘probably’ too PARIS - Sausages, ham and other processed meats cause bowel cancer, and red meat “probably” does too, a UN agency warned Monday, in a potentially heavy blow for the fastgrowing livestock industry.

A review of 800 studies from around the world found “sufficient evidence in humans that the consumption of processed meat causes colorectal cancer,” said the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).

The finding, it added, supports “recommendations to limit intake of meat” -- particularly in processed forms.

The category includes meat that has been salted, cured, fermented or smoked -- hot dogs, sausages, corned beef, dried meat like beef jerky or South African biltong, canned meat or meat-based sauces.

For every 50 grammes (1.8 ounces) of meat eaten on a daily basis, the population-wide risk of developing colon cancer was 18 percent higher, said the agency.

This meant enlarging the group of people likely to develop bowel cancer in their lifetime from six to seven out of every 100 who eat a three-rasher bacon sandwich every single day, explained statistician David Spiegelhalter of Cambridge University, who was not involved in the study.

The IARC agreed the cancer risk was statistically “small”, but “increases with the amount of meat consumed.”

For unprocessed red meat -- beef, veal, pork, lamb, mutton, horse or goat, the review found “strong” evidence of a link, but not convincing enough to place it in the group of confirmed cancer-causing agents which includes tobacco smoke, asbestos, and now also salami.

Aside from paddy plants, plantation crops are also facing harvest failure this dry season, especially in the area of Pupuan where local farmers predominantly grow coffee. Due to the extend dry season and prolonged heat, many coffee seedlings that farmers have cultivated have not flourished, but perished.

Extreme drought, coffee seedlings perish

TABANAN - Aside from paddy plants, plantation crops are also facing harvest failure this dry season, especially in the area of Pupuan where local farmers predominantly grow coffee. Due to the extend dry season and prolonged heat, many coffee seedlings that farmers have cultivated have not flourished, but perished.

A coffee farmer named Suardika form Pupaun, admitted that the mortality rate of coffee seedlings cultivated by farmers in Pupuan is about 60 percent. “I cultivated a total of 800 seedlings, most of which have perished” he said. Seedlings are not the only ones affected by the hope dry weather, coffee flowers have also started to fall early. The coffee harvest yields for 2016 have already slumped sharply compared to last year.

Farmers predicted that it would start to rain in October allowing the coffee seedlings and plants to thrive. Apparently these predictions were wrong, because it is already the end of Ocotber and there has yet to be any rain fall.

Due unpredictable weather conditions, Suardika said that many coffee farmers in Pupuan suffer great losses having spent up to IDR 3,000 per coffee seedling. “A decline in revenue is certain because many flowers have fallen off the coffee plants, which means that the plants will produce less beans,” he explained.

Coffee farmers in Pupuan took measures to counter act the weather challenges, such as watering their plants manually and installing paranets to block the seedlings form direct sunlight. Unfortunately, the se measures failed to result in positive outcomes. “Plants continue to die. Similar measures were taken with other crops such as cacao and sugar snakefruit that failed to grow this season,” said the man that also cultivates a variety of other plantation commodities.

Farmers are at a loss as to how to help their plants. Last year there was already rain by October so the plants were alright. “This year the heat has been extreme, and even though we are used to being out in the garden, many farmers found that it just too hot to continue working,” explained Suardika.

Since the weather is unpredictable many farmers have resigned themselves to loosing crops. “Normally we have a schedule that we follow for giving the plants fertilizer and such, but with such unpredictable weather we cannot plan anything,” he said.

Local coffee beans show a lot of potential for export even though Balinese coffee is still only used as a buffer for other coffee sources.

This however means that our coffee prices remain stable at IDR 22,000 per kilo and will possibly go up in December to the lack of beans produced this year. (kmb24)

Currently, the 79 percent of cases of transmission of HIV/AIDS are through heterosexual unprotected sex. Prviously most cases of transmission occurred due to sharing needles. National data also recorded that of the 240 million populations of Indonesia, 6.7 million men pay or sex. Anywhere from 2-20 percent of the people being paid are adult men while there is an estimated 230,000 female sex workers in Indonesia.The fact of men paying for sex from stingers is the key factor in the transmission of HIV/AIDS to their partners and eventually to their children.

Apart from prostitution, general unprotected sex is another major contributing factor in the transmission of HIV and other STI’s (sexually transmuted infections).

“Enganging in unprotected sex

means that one person with HIV/ Aids or other STIS’ can transmit their disease to upward of 300 people- indirectly,” said Division Head of the Disease Control and Environmental Health (P2PL), Gde Wira Sunetra from the Bali Health Office, recently.

The most frequently occurring STI’s include gonorrhea in men, syphilis and bacterial vaginosis in women that causes a smelly vaginal discharge and intense itching.

Preventive efforts that can be taken by the government include providing teenage health care, and health knowledge to youth of 14-25 years old as well as reproductive health education in educational institutions by working with with the Ministry of National Education. To suppress the number HIV/ AIDS cases in Bali, it is not enough

to provide treatment, knowledge is essential in preventing transmission. The government has already facilitated access to contraceptives (condoms). “Ten to fifteen years ago the only place to get condoms was form public health centres, but now they can be found at mini marts,” he said.

Physician and lecturer in andrology and sexology in the School of Medicine at Udayana University, I Gusti Ngurah Pramesemara, is also a volunteer at Kisara. Pamesemara said that the results of Kirsara’s research by Kisara indicated that 96.9 percent of teenagers in Denpasar know about the hazards of the STIs but they still engage in sexual intercourse without using a condom because they say that they are hard to find and also that there is a stigma attached to using them and also that they find it inconvenient.

“This information indicates that we still need to provide education about just how important it is to use condoms,” he said.

There is fear that if there is limited access to condoms then the the number of people who contract STIs and HIV/AIDS will increase. (kmb42)

This has come about from a lack of instruction in Balinese language skills - both formal and informal. Prof. Suweta added that many Balinese language teachers are ill equipped to teach. “At a number of schools I have found teachers who are not certified to teach Balinese, but they teach anyway. That is the reality” he said.

Prof. Suweta therefore considers it very important that the government of Bali move swiftly away from simply talking about Balinese language instruction, towards actually providing Balinese language instructors for every village.

That way, Balinese culture, that strongly rooted in the Balinese language will stand a chance of surviving in the face of many other challenges.

“So far there has only been verbal discourse on the part of the provincial government when it comes to preserving local culture through language instruction. If the government does not take action soon, Balinese will likely get washed away in the tides of globalization,” he said.

He added that Balinese language instruction is in line with the 2013 concept for curriculum that includes character building. By learning Balinese, the younger generation will automatically be taught about ethics and moral values through the language. “It will be better if the younger generation can be directed to explore Balinese literature because it contains many ethical and moral teachings that can be extracted and applied to daily life,” he said. A lecturer of Balinese language at Undiksha, Dr. I Ketut Paramarta, asserted that Balinese language skills open up a wide range of professional options not just as lecturer or educator.

Balinese humorists for example are very popular, using Balinese script in making handicrafts is another option and the healing

Balinese needs to remain the mother tongue and not the second language of the people of this island. Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses.

Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple.

Indonesia failed to predict severity of El Nino weather

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s weather agency failed to predict that the effects of the El Nino weather phenomenon this year would be worse than in 1997, a senior mininster said on Wednesday, as the government considers declaring a national emergency due to forest fires.

The fires raging across the archipelago have created a haze that has blanketed much of Southeast Asia in recent months and, according to authorities, have left more than half a million Indonesians suffering from respiratory ailments.

“Our forecast was wrong.”

DiCaprio finds joy in Macau project with De Niro, Scorsese

MACAU — Leonardo DiCaprio says being able to work with his two cinematic father figures on a short film commissioned for the opening of a Macau casino resort was “a slice of heaven.”

He spoke in the Asian gambling mecca ahead of Tuesday’s debut of “The Audition,” which also stars Robert De Niro and was directed by Martin Scorsese, who also attended the press briefing.

DiCaprio said that “for me the great joy was finally getting to be on set with both of these guys.” “To be able to have scenes with Bob and being directed by Marty is a small slice of heaven for me as an actor,” DiCaprio said. He described the two as like his “fathers in the world of cinema.”

The 15-minute film’s premiere is part of the star-studded lineup to launch Melco Crown Entertainment Ltd.’s Hollywoodthemed Studio City resort in Macau. The

casino’s ability to draw such star power attests to the rising influence of the special Chinese region, which has grown into the world’s top gambling market.

Scorsese described the film as “realitybased with some humor.” The plot has DiCaprio and De Niro invited to Macau

by Scorsese to compete for the same part in a movie. Brad Pitt also appears in the film but did not attend the opening.

Scorsese has directed multiple films with DiCaprio or De Niro, but “The Audition” marks the first time the three, along with Pitt, have collaborated.

Producer Brett Ratner said he hoped that the short could be turned into a feature film.

“It’s just a teaser. We come to Macau, Marty comes here, lives at the hotel for three months, six months and we make a big event movie,” he said. (ap)
