LONDON - A production company involved in making “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has pleaded guilty in a British court to failing to protect actors and workers after an incident in which Harrison Ford’s leg was broken, officials said on Tuesday.

The star, who plays the muchloved character Han Solo, was injured after he became trapped under a rapidly closing metal-framed door during filming in June 2014 at Pinewood Studios, near London.

The power of the door’s drive system was comparable to the weight of a small car, said Britain’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE), a state agency which enforces workplace

safety regulations.

“This was a foreseeable incident,” a spokesman for HSE said in a statement.

“Managing on-set risks in a sensible and proportionate way for all actors and staff -- regardless of their celebrity status -- is vital to protecting both on-screen and off-screen talent, as well as protecting the reputation of the industry,” he said.

The production firm, Londonbased Foodles Production (UK) Ltd, could not immediately be reached for comment. Representatives of the firm entered the guilty plea during a hearing earlier at Milton Keynes Magistrates Court.

Ford, who was 71 at the time, was airlifted to a hospital in Oxford after the incident and later had surgery on his left leg. With global ticket sales worth well over $2 billion, “The Force Awakens”, the seventh instalment of the Star Wars saga, is the third highestgrossing movie in Hollywood history, behind “Avatar” and “Titanic”. Indonesia rebuffs family, global appeals to halt executions

CILACAP — Indonesia rebuffed appeals from distraught relatives, rights advocates and foreign governments to abandon plans to execute 14 people for drug crimes as preparations intensified at the prison island holding death row inmates.

A convoy of ambulances, most of them carrying coffins, arrived Thursday morning at the port town nearest to the Nusa Kambangan prison island, where the mostly foreign drug convicts will be executed by firing squads. Officials began tightening security at the prison several days ago, with more than 1,000 police sent to Cilacap, the port town, and the island.

The European Union and the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights called on Indonesia to impose an immediate moratorium on executions and the Indian and Pakistani governments said they were making urgent efforts to save two nationals among the condemned.

Indonesia has not released an official list of those to be executed but the country’s attorney-general said 14 people would be put to death. Community Legal Aid Institute, which is involved in some of the death row cases, has given names for four Indonesians, six Nigerians, two Zimbabweans, one Indian and one Pakistani.

Lawyers and rights groups have raised serious doubts about the legitimacy of the convictions in several of the drug cases, including that of Pakistani Zulfikar Ali, Indonesian Merri Utami and Nigerian Humphrey Jefferson. About 10 women protesting in Cilacap against Utami’s death sentence were taken away in a

police van on Thursday.

But Muhammad Rum, a spokesman for Indonesia’s attorney-general, said the executions are the “implementation of our positive laws” and will not be delayed or stopped. All the cases have gone through a long legal process including appeals, he said.

“They all have been given chances at all stages.” The foreign ministry also defended the use of capital punishment and the legal process.

In Cilacap, the sister-in-law of Michael Titus, a Nigerian sentenced to death, said his Indonesian wife was returning to Indonesia from West Africa in the hope she would be able to see him a final time. “We will keep fighting to seek justice for our family,” said the relative, Nila, who used one name. “Michael is not alone. He has a wife, kids.”

Inmates doing time on narcotics charges learn new skills

Many people may consider that the inmates at the Narcotic Prison at Buungan hamlet, Tiga, Susut, Bangli, are not productive and that they simply spend their days eating and sleeping as they wait for their sentence to be done. However upon closer look, this is not the case as many inmates are engaged in productive activities.

This prison that has been in operation sinceApril 2015 is located on an estate with few residences around, making for a quite tranquil atmosphere. As one arrives on the grounds, all one sees are a few parked vehocles and a few officers.

At first glance, this adult prison appears to be devoide of activity.

However as one enters several guards are seen to be strictly guardign the grounds and all visiting guests are cloesly examined similar to at an airport.

Behind the strict security, there is something interesting happening at this prison. The inmates here learn a number of different skills including making sokasi baskets from used newspaper. Twisting the

newspaper into strands may seem useless but with patience these strands are gradually transformed into into valuable products.

One inmate named Ardi, said pursuing such an is a good way to kill time and also is a way to show that inmates are capable of being of benefit to society. “This (craft making—Ed) can also be used to divert my attention from my previous lifestyle” he said when met in person on Wednesday (Jul. 27).

This man from Jakarta also transforms newspapers into miniature vessels and their artisitc value is no less than products made in other regions and the selling price is quite promising. Through this

experience, Ardi has grown a desire to open a waste pocessing business when his sentence is up. “ With this skill I can be independent and not have to burden my parents”, he said.

Behind his busy activities, this skinny inmate nonetheless misses the loving arms of his family. But alas because they are so far away, he can only express his joys and sorros by telephone. “When I was first arrested in Tabanan, my family often visited me. However, after I was moved to this prison (Buungan Prison—Ed) four months ago, they rarely visit because it is so far for them to visit”, he said longingly.

Inmates of this prison also make products from coconut shells. An inmate named Dayat from Bayuwangi for example uses his creative hands to turn this hard material into intricatly carved dragons -a skill he had before being incarcerated.

DENPASAR - A total of 65 out of the 716 Balinese instructors that passed the Province of Bali of selection process, resigned before ever carrying out their duty. The teachers were designated as contra t workers following a decree issued by the governor of Bali aimed at ensuring that young people continue to learn Balinese. At the begniing of August the Bali Cutlture Agency will be finalising all of the matters related to these new instructors and it is expected that more will resign before then.

“Yesterday we assinged all the

instructors to their given regions and in Augsut we will start processing their salary” explained Head of the Bali Cutlure Agency, Dewa Putu Beratha, in Denpasar.

According to Beratha, the 65 instructors are said to have resigned whereas in fact they simply never showed up to sign their employement contracts. The majority of those who backed out had been assigned to teach in Buleleng (20 teachers), with another 15 assigned to Tabana and Ejmbrana respectively. Another 5 teachers were assigned to Gianayr, 3 to Bangli, 3 to Klungkung, 2 to

Denpasar and anpther 2 to Badung.

Beratha said that is is assumed that these instructors are either already under contract somewhere else or did not want to be assigned to teach too far from their homes.

“This is a new position that has opened up for Balinese language instructors, all of whom come from Bali. It is unforteunate to see that some graduates of Balinese language studies do not have a keen sense of wanting to preserve this language, because it could mean that people from outside of Bali will fill these positions”, he complained.

Chief of the Narcotics Prison, Arif Rahman, said that in addition to handicraft industry skills, some of the other inmates are involved in the raising of livestock, agriculture and painting. Such activities are part of the rehabilitation program that is intended both to divert the attention of the inmates away from narcotics, as well as to provide them with a skill that they can use when they reintegrated back into their community. “This is as a part of their rehabilitation so that the inmates will not be seen negatively forever” he said.

Activity of the Narcotic Prison, I Nyoman Mudana, stated that based on recent data, there are a total of 106 inmates, most of whom were moved from other prisons in Bali. He admited that is not easy to divert the attentio fo the inmates form narcotics and that the process requires patience and a serious approach. “It usually takea bout four months to divert their attention onto something positive, it cannto be done instantly. Their underlying problems need to be identified first and the support of their parents is also needed”, he explained.

Mudana, who lives in Bitera, Gianyar, said that about 14 percent of the inmates have never been visited by their families. The reasons range from geographc distance to the imnates not wanting to be visited for personal reasons. “ Som eof the imated are also hiding the fact tehat they are in prison”, he added. (sos)

Beratha added that hs agency is attempting to assign the language instructors to positions that are near their homes, however this is not always possible because the needs of each district/municipality do not always correspond to avaible instructors, so sometimes they are assigned to teach outside of ther area.

At present there is only one position that needs to be filled by an instructor from a different region. “For this year, we will leave this position empty and will fill it during the next recruitment periode in 2017”, said Beratha.

Chairman of Commission IV of the Bali House of Representatives, Nyoman Parta, deplored the Balinese language instructor recruitment committee’s lack of foresight in providing for back-up instrictors that has resulted in their being no instructors to to take the place of the 65 instructors who backed out at the last minute.

“We will evaluate the situation and propose a new tactic for the next recruitment periode. Priority will be given to instructors who come from the regions where positions need to be filled”, he said. (kmb32)

Salted fish boiling hut visited by many tourists Govt allocates IDR 1.2 billion to renovate the building

SEMARAPURA - The salted fish boiling center at Segara Beach, Kusamba village, Dawan, is now visited by many foreign travelers.

Previously, it was very rundown with a pungent fishy smell from the fish remians, but the facilities have now been imporved upon.’ Kusamaba Village’s traditional process of boiling the fish to preserve them is salt, is now a available for people to enjoy.

As confirmed on Wednesday (Jul. 27) by Head of the Klungkung Livestock, Fisheries and Marine

Resources, I Gusti Ngurah Badiwangsa, currently there are some 78 people involved in salted fish making in Kusamba village. The salted fish producers are all gathered in one place which makes it easy for the LFMR Agenncy to provide guidance and supervision and this year the central governemnt has allocated IDR 1.25 billion to the agency for doing renovations on the salwater fish boiling center.

With this renovation, the air circulation at this salt fish boiling will be

arranged so that it will not complicate breathing. “Air circulation and ventilation will be improved so that the smoke from the wood burning fires will be immediately sucke dout of the building and also so that the air around the boiling area does not become hott”, explained Badiwangsa.

Renovations to the building will also help to make the fish boiling center a more appealing tourist attraction.

The tradional way of processing the fish using firewood and no chemicals is already popular with tourists.

“Apart form the lack of chemicals, we also make sure that the whole process is done hygienically. We do not want things to be done carelessly because this salted fish product is sold throughout Bali”, he added.

One salted fish maker, 32 year old Komang Sunerti explained that there are no chemicals used o the process –just boiling water and alor of salt that they buy from Java because Kusamba’s own salt is too expensive to be used for this type of porocess. Presently there is a lack

of local fish so they are also buying frozen fish from Java. “Frozen fish is more expensive and the quality is lower than fresh fish. However, we resort to using it when local fish stocks are low so that productin can continue”, he said.

Each basket of of 10 salted fish is currently sold for IDR 40,000, but the proce goes doen to IDR 35,000 when local fish is available. “Each group of three can produce up to 200 baskets from 11:00 to 17:00 daily”, added Sunerti. (dwa)

The process of creating the food truck involved collaboration with Institut Seni Indonesia Denpasar.

All students from the Faculty of Arts & Design can submit their creative designs for the exterior of the truck in order to stand a chance to have their art displayed permanently on the VW Combi and bring home a total cash prize of a cool IDR 40 million. A total of 150 entries were submitted but fourth-semester Visual Communications Design student, I Putu Yudhi Aditya, was announced the winner - his super-cool, original design depicts the lively and colorful atmosphere of Seminyak, using a combination of authentic Balinese elements, the different morning and afternoon vibe that the truck offers, along with eye catching cartoon illustration with an iconic chef as the mascot. “Fashioning a Reign: 90 Years of Style from The Queen’s Wardrobe”, part of the summer opening of the palace, features clothing from her childhood to the present day and also the dress worn by Elizabeth for her coronation in 1953.

BANGLI - Residents of Pule hamlet, Kawan, Bangli continue to be messed around with the presence of unmanaged waste of Kidul Market. Request of the handling to district government has often been delivered. Unfortunately, it has never got a response. Finally it resulted in an allegation if the performance of district government is not serious in tackling the environmental problem.

Chief of Pule hamlet, I Nyoman Maret Adnyana, said on Tuesday (Jul. 26) that the emergence of complaint about the waste generated by a number of fish and meat mongers is not a new problem, but has become a classic problem having taken place since the past few years. “It has frequently been

complained by residents. They did not stand with the marked smell,” he said.

He added that the waste also causes rundown impression at the surrounding environment and potentially becomes a source of disease outbreaks, especially amid the rampant dengue cases. Responding

to this issue, as a representative of residents he has protested verbally and in writing to the Bangli Industry and Trade Agency and the Environment Agency.

Unfortunately, it has never been followed up. District government is accused of not being serious in addressing the environmental issues. “The protests have often been conveyed so that it can be addressed quickly.

Unfortunately, it is not obeyed,” he growled.

To avoid from continuous complaints of residents, Adnyana hoped the district government to im-

mediately intervene by providing short- and long-term solutions such as construction of waste water treatment plant (WWTP). “If this problem persists, it will be more annoying the comfort, especially during sunshine after it rains,” he said.

One of local fish mongers admitted that all this time there is no place to hold the waste. She argued the waste is directly disposed of in the sewer located around the market. “I do not see any storage of waste around the market,” she said.

When confirmed separately,

the Head of the Bangli Environment Agency (BLH), I Made Alit Parwata, has not given straightforward responses related to the waste handling. He argued that his agency is still coordinating with the division head responsible for the matter. Previously he already promised to provide storage in the form of a drum. However, it seems to have not been realized yet because no drum is seen around the market area. “It will be coordinated first with the division head about the technique of implementation,” he said simply. Pedophilia case leads to human trafficking

DENPASAR - Pedophilia case with defendant Robert Andrew Fiddes Ellis from Australia was resumed at the Denpasar District Court, Tuesday (Jul. 26). The trial closed to the public presented witnesses KP and KY. Information outside the trial mentioned that the case was alleged to lead to human trafficking.

Such allegation was revealed when there is admission from a victim witness escorted by two people coming to the boarding house of the defendant Robert with the initials

W and S. Allegedly they were also lobbying the victim’s parents so that they let their children stay in place of Robert. It was admitted by the defendant’s attorney.

“Yes, there is an indication of human trafficking in this case.

There are people going to the home of Robert for many times,” said Beny Hariyono.

Pursuant to recognition of Robert, each child coming to his home was given money as much as hundreds of thousands. Other

than money, they were also given bicycles and other toys. W and S alleged to be the intermediary were given up to millions of rupiahs by Robert to buy a motorcycle.

“We hope that both W and S can be presented before the court. It is meant to confirm the statements of witnesses,” hoped Yanuar, another defendant’s attorney.

More sadly, the information obtained told that the targets were mostly children of market porters originating from Karangasem.

Associated with the abuse act committed by Robert, Yanuar mentioned that Robert claimed to have forgotten. Robert just remembered to bathe the children coming to his home. However, based on testimony of the victim witness, the fingers of Robert were inserted into their anus. Victim witness consisting of children admitted not to be happy with the actions of Robert.

But, when given money they claim to like.

Moreover, continued Yanuar,

many children were supported by their parents when playing to the house of the defendant.

In the meantime, Ipung Sapura from the integrated services center for women and children (P2TP2A) said that one of the victim witnesses was picked up by W and S. Australia’ Northern Territory on Wednesday suspended the use of hoods and restraints on children after the broadcasting of CCTV footage showing guards at a juvenile detention centre teargassing aboriginal inmates and strapping a half-naked, hooded boy to a chair. Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has ordered a Royal Commission in the treatment of children in the detention centre, the most powerful inquiry in the country, rejecting calls for a national inquiry.

U.N. Special Rapporteur on Torture, Juan Mendez, told Australia’s Radio National on Thursday that the video suggested that torture may have taken place and welcomed the inquiry but warned against limiting its scope.

“It’s hard to tell only from the video or the press coverage but I do think that it’s a very worrisome development that can amount to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment under any circumstance...,” he said.

He said that there was no question that very severe pain and suffering had occurred and that the perpetrators seem to be representatives of the state. If others knew and did nothing, they too could be punished alongside those who actually committed the violence, he said.

The footage, showing six aboriginal boys being stripped naked, strapped to a chair with a hood, thrown by the neck into a cell and held for long periods in solitary confinement, was shot between 2010 and 2014 at the Don Dale Youth Detention Centre near Darwin in the Northern Territory.

A report into some of the incidents by the Northern Territory Children’s Commissioner in 2015 found fault with the guards’ behaviour, but the findings were disputed by the then head of prisons and not acted upon, said Australian Broadcasting Corp, who aired the footage.

The Northern Territory’s corrections minister was sacked on Tuesday, just hours after the broadcast.

PARIS - F rance’s government faced criticism of its security record on Wednesday in the wake of revelations that one of the assailants who slit the throat of a priest at a church altar was a known would-be jihadist under police surveillance.

President Francois Hollande met interfaith leaders in an effort to promote national unity. But his predecessor and potential opponent in a presidential election next year, Nicolas Sarkozy, said the government must take stronger steps to track known Islamist sympathisers.

Tuesday’s attackers interrupted a church service, forced 85-yearold Roman Catholic priest Father Jacques Hamel to his knees at the altar and slit his throat. As they came out of the church shouting “Allahu akbar” (“God is Greatest”), they were shot and killed by police.

The attack came less that two weeks after another suspected Islamist drove a truck into a Bastille Day crowd, killing 84 people. Opposition politicians have responded to the attacks with strong criticism

LONDON - Shockwaves from Britain’s vote to leave the European Union are reverberating through the economy with surveys published on Thursday showing a sharp dive in consumer confidence and a slowdown in the construction sector. A month after the Brexit vote, the latest signals of a sharp economic slowdown are likely to add to expectations of action from the Bank of England on Aug. 4 when most economists say it will cut interest rates and might start buying bonds again.

An index of consumer confidence plunged nearly five points to 106.6 in July - matching a fall seen in October 2014 - to touch its lowest level in a monthly survey in three years, polling firm YouGov and the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) said.

“The public are still absorbing the EU referendum result but it is clear that consumer confidence has taken a significant and clear dive in the month after the Brexit vote,” Stephen Harmston, Head of YouGov Reports, said. People are particularly worried about what will happen to the value of their homes, the survey found.

“If homeowners’ fears over their property prices are realised then there could be a very serious impact to both the housing sector and the economy in general,” CEBR director Scott Corfe said.

Although this temple is not as renown as Tirta Empul Temple in Tampaksiring, since it was first discovered in 2007, Pingit Sebatu Temple has become quite popular, especially amongst Balinese Hindus.

Sometime in 2007, a foreign visitor was looking for a quite place to bath near the village and found this small waterfall nestled amongst the trees. At the time the villagers did not use this place for purification purposes. The strange thing about this water was that when the foreigner went to bath in the small waterfall, the water changed color and became milky white. Word spread amongst the villagers and the village chief and head priest of Sebatu Village got wind of the strange tale and requested an indication about whether this place

should be officially designated as holy.

Believe it or not people who come here to purify themselves in the waters of Sebatu can see the water change color -though it does not always turn white, sometimes the water turns brown or yellowish.

To get to Genah Melukat Tirta Pingit takes about 1 hour from Tegallalang. After reaching Sebatu Village there is a fork in the road where there is a sign that reads “Genah Melukat” on the right. About 2 km further, after after Gunung Kawi Sebatu, one reaches the rather large parking lot that is not far from the waterfall. About 200 meters away one reaches the 150 steps that lead down to Genah Melukat Tirta Pingit Sebatu. The walk down is quite pleasant with a fresh natural countryside atmosphere and the soft sound of rushing water coming out of the waterspouts and also directly out of the earth as it cascades over the rocks.

Before reaching the purification site, there are three bamboo waterspouts with a small shrine where Balinese Hindus will usually stop to ask for permission to enter the site and offer canang (flower offerings) and incense in thanks. The purification site is located lower down still.

Before entering the temple site of Tirta Pingit, Balinese Hindus will pray again asking for permission to purify themselves in the holy water.

The water used for the purification is crystal clear and drinkable so it is not surprising that many people

will fill jerry cans of the holy water or buy water from locals who sell it already bottled, to bring home with them.

On auspicious days like on the full moon, Tirta Pingit Temple is filled with Balinese Hindus who

come to purify themselves (melukat). There are also many visitors –both domestic and foreign who also come here to purify themselves in this water that is believed to have the holy power to cleanse the soul. (kmb)

Obama urges Americans to get behind Clinton, slams Trump

PHILADELPHIA - President Barack Obama painted an optimistic picture of America’s future and offered full-throated support for Hillary Clinton’s bid to defeat Republican Donald Trump in a speech that electrified the Democratic National Convention.

He urged Democrats to enable Clinton to finish the job he started with his election nearly eight years ago in a rousing speech that capped a night when party luminaries took to the stage to contrast the party’s new standard-bearer with Trump, whom they portrayed as a threat to U.S. values.

“There has never been a man or woman, not me, not Bill - nobody more qualified than Hillary Clinton to serve as president of the United States,” Obama said to cheers at the Philadelphia convention on Wednesday night.

Hillary Clinton, the wife of former president Bill Clinton, will accept the party’s White House nomination in a speech to end the convention on Thursday night. The election is on Nov. 8.

“Tonight, I ask you to do for Hillary Clinton what you did for me. I ask you to carry her the same way you carried me,” Obama said. When he finished, she joined him on stage where they hugged,

clasped hands and waved to the crowd.

The two were rivals in the hard-fought 2008 campaign for the Democratic nomination. After winning that election to become America’s first black president, Obama appointed Clinton his secretary of state and now looks to her to carry on his legacy.

Republicans have painted Clinton as a Washington insider who would represent a “third term” for what they view as failed policies under Obama, elected to a second term in 2012.

Speaking to delegates, Obama offered an alternative to businessman Trump’s vision of the United States as being under siege from illegal immigrants, crime and terrorism and losing influence in the world.

“I am more optimistic about the future of America than ever before,” Obama said at the Wells Fargo Center, a basketball and hockey arena.

A former first lady and U.S. senator, Clinton made history on Tuesday when she became the first woman to secure the presidential nomination of a major party. She will lead the Democrats against Republican nominee Trump.

Obama took aim at Trump’s campaign slogan and promise to “Make America Great Again.”

“America is already great.

America is already strong. And I promise you, our strength, our greatness, does not depend on Donald Trump,” he said.

“Preach!” members of the crowd shouted. “Best president ever,” someone screamed.

Obama listed what he described as progress during his two terms in office, such as recovery from an economic recession, the Obamacare healthcare reform and the 2011 killing of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

He said American values, not race, religion or political preference, were what made the United States great.

Turkey dismisses military, shuts media outlets as crackdown deepens

ANKARA - Turkey on Wednesday deepened a crackdown on suspected followers of a U.S.-based cleric it blames for a failed coup, dismissing nearly 1,700 military personnel and shutting 131 media outlets, moves that may spark more concern among its Western allies.

So far, tens of thousands of people - including police, judges and teachers - have been suspended or placed under investigation since the July 15-16 coup, which Turkey says was staged by a faction within the military loyal to the Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen.

Gulen, who lives in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania but whose movement has a wide following in Turkey where it runs a large network of schools, has denied any involvement in the failed putsch.

Western governments and human rights groups, while condemning the abortive coup in which at least 246 people were killed and more than 2,000 injured, have expressed concern over the extent of the crackdown, suggesting President Tayyip Erdogan may be using it to stifle dissent and tighten his grip on power.

Erdogan, who narrowly escaped capture and possibly death on the night of the coup, denies the crackdown has wider aims and says the

Gulen movement threatened democracy by attempting to build a “parallel state” within the military, media and civil service.

On Wednesday, the military dishonourably discharged 1,684 of its personnel, a Turkish government official said, citing their role in the failed coup. Wiranto demands proof from parties on human rights violation accusations

JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Wiranto has called on several parties that have accused him of involvement in cases of human rights violations to clearly prove their accusations.

“I am hoping that the issues regarding my involvement in cases of human rights violations can be proved in detail, when and where.

I will tender my explanation on each accusation,” he affirmed following the handover ceremony for the coordinating ministers post at the Coordinating Ministry of Political, Legal and Security Affairs Ministrys office building in Jakarta on Thursday.

Wirantos appointment as the new coordinating minister by President Joko Widodo on Wednesday in Jakarta drew criticism from several parties.

The former military commander is deemed responsible for several gross human rights violations, according to reports submitted to the National Commission on Human Rights.

The cases include the Trisakti University tragedy in May 1998,

Semanggi I and II incidents, and the abduction and disappearance of pro-democracy activists in 1997 and 1998, as well as the Bloody Biak incident.

“More than 300 personnel have been deployed by the Central Java Police to oversee the executions,” National Police Spokesman Senior Commissioner Martinus Sitompul remarked at the National Police Headquarters here on Thursday.

According to Sitompul, hundreds of police personnel, as part of the 2016 Nusa Candi Operation, have been split into an escort team, security team, and firing squad.

Ahead of the executions of the drug convicts, security arrangements have been beefed up at the Wijay-

apura dock area in Cilacap.

The officers of the Cilacap District Police were present at the dock area on Wednesday and had placed a barricade made of bamboo at the end of the road leading to the special crossing to the Nusakambangan prison.

Hence, only vehicles of officials, guests, and broadcasting teams from numerous national TV stations are allowed access to the parking area in front of the Wijayapura Port.

The Indonesian Police headquarters has readied a team of shooters to carry out the third round of executions of drug convicts on death row soon.

“The team of shooters stands completely prepared to act as

the executioners,” National Police Head of the Public Relations Division Inspector General Boy Rafli Amar remarked in Jakarta on Monday.

Amar could not as yet reveal details on the number of shooters that have been prepared for the task. Besides the shooters, the Police have also tied up with physicians and escort teams to help the Attorney Generals Office carry out the executions.

However, Attorney General HM Prasetyo has not as yet confirmed the date of the third round of executions.

“It is not as easy as you think since human lives are involved.

Preparations have to be made well,” he stressed. (ant)

Menjangan island

SINGARAJA - Just off the northwest coast of Bali lies a small island with the name Menjangan island (of Pulau Menjangan in the Indonesian language). This island is situated in the protected marine reserve of the Bali Barat National Park. The island is surrounded by hectares of beautiful coral reef gardens with a very diverse eco biology, which makes it a favorite destination for snorkelers as well as divers. The good drop-offs on Menjangan’s south side is a popular spot for local people and tourists wishing to dive for a variety of fish and coral reef exploration. There are no dangerous currents to contend with in this area.

Apart from a high diversity of coral species and colorful, tropical fish there are also many kinds of sea birds and shorebirds frequenting the island. Also the Hawkesbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) is sighted frequently in the area.

Eleven London 2012 weightlifters fail doping tests

LONDON - Eleven weightlifters, including six medallists, produced positive samples in the second wave of doping retests from the 2012 London Olympics, the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) said on Wednesday.

Russia’s five-times European champion Nataliya Zabolotnaya was among three silver medallists from the London Games to fail tests along with compatriots Alexandr Ivanov and Svetlana Tzarukaeva.

Zabolotnaya finished second in the women’s -75kg event in London, repeating her silver-medal performance in Athens eight years earlier.

Ivanov was world champion in 2010 and 2013 in the -94kg category, while Tzarukaeva won the world title in 2011 in the 63kg event.

Other London medallists to fail tests included Iryna Kulesha of Belarus, Armenia’s Hripsime Khurshudyan and Moldova’s Cristina Iovu.

The IWF said the 11 athletes have all been provisionally suspended.

All the athletes who tested positive were found to have used the banned anabolic steroid Dehydrochlormethyltestosterone.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) said on Friday that 45 athletes had failed dope tests after their samples from the 2008 Beijing Olympics and London 2012 were reanalysed.

The second wave of retests included 138 samples from London 2012, involving athletes from two sports and nine countries. The London 2012 retests produced 15 failures. (rtr)

LONDON - Mark Cavendish’s past Olympic appearances have not exactly gone to plan but the Briton says he will arrive in Rio on a high as he bids to justify his return to the velodrome boards with a long-awaited first medal.

The 31-year-old world road champion will ride the multi-discipline omnium event in Brazil, having convinced the British Cycling selectors he has a genuine medal chance.

His place on the team was in doubt when he finished sixth in the omnium at the track world championships in London in March, having been set a minimum target of a podium place.

Since then Cavendish has juggled track training with his ‘day job’ for Team Dimension Data with whom he won four stages at this month’s Tour de France, taking his overall tally to 30, four behind the record of Belgian great Eddy Merckx.

“On a mental point of view I’m on a bit of a high from the Tour,” Cavendish said in an interview on Cycling News.

“Not away in the clouds high and it’s not like I’m going on a piss up for a week after the Tour de France but I know that the work I’ve put in is working.

“I know the work I’ve put in has been beneficial. What we’ve set out to do this year is played out. It gives you positive feelings for the next goals you have.”

Cavendish rode the Madison event with Bradley Wiggins at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing but the duo flopped despite being favourites and briefly fell out.

At the London 2012 Olympics Cavendish took part in the road race and was again a favourite, only to languish in 29th place.

The six-discipline omnium poses tough challenges for Cavendish, particularly the 4,000m individual pursuit and 1km time trial which proved costly to his medal chances in London.

However, after a pulling out of the Tour early to concentrate on Rio, Cavendish is expected to challenge the likes of Colombia’s double world champion Fernando Gaviria and Germany’s Roger Kluge for gold.

He said the demands of the Tour will not have any detrimental effect on his Rio hopes.

“If I’d have been over the limit on the third day I’d have stopped on the third day,” he explained.

“It’s not easy (juggling road and track) but I’ve been managing that all year. This is about making every single pedal rev count,” he added.

While selected for the omnium, Cavendish could also be an option in the men’s team pursuit squad and a possible link-up again with Wiggins with whom he memorably won Madison gold at the worlds earlier this year. (rtr)

findings about possible unethical conduct and conflicts of interest during the bidding process.

Niersbach, a vice president of the 2006 World Cup organizing committee in charge of media and marketing, described the punishment as “excessive.”

He retained his elected positions

on the top decision-making bodies at both FIFA and UEFA, despite resigning as German federation president in November.

SHENZHEN — Manchester City players have been told not to eat junk food as new manager Pep Guardiola tries to turn the team into Premier League champions again. “He cut out some juice and, of course, pizza,” defender Gael Clichy was quoted as saying in British newspapers. “All the heavy food is not allowed.”

While fans would expect such a strict diet to be the norm, Clichy said: “In truth, it’s not always like this. I know because I’ve been playing football for a long time.”

Guardiola did refute suggestions that overweight players have been banned from training.

“I want my players fit and for me the weight is so, so important,” Guardiola said during the team’s pre-season tour of China. “We need to run, we need to fight, we need to jump, we need to need the ball. And after three days again,

then three days again, then three days again.

“When you are not fit and your weight is not proper, danger is coming. They are not fast enough, quick in the head enough and that’s why I want my players to be absolutely fit.”

He urged Democrats to enable Clinton to finish the job he started with his election nearly eight years ago in a rousing speech that capped a night when party luminaries took to the stage to contrast the party’s new standard-bearer with Trump, whom they portrayed as a threat to U.S. values.

“There has never been a man or woman, not me, not Bill - nobody more qualified than Hillary Clinton to serve as president of the United States,” Obama said to cheers at the Philadelphia convention on Wednesday night.

The two were rivals in the hard-fought 2008 campaign for the Democratic nomination. After winning that election to become America’s first black president, Obama appointed Clinton his secretary of state and now looks to her to carry on his legacy.

Republicans have painted Clinton as a Washington insider who would represent a “third term” for what they view as failed policies under Obama, elected to a second term in 2012.

Speaking to delegates, Obama offered an alternative to businessman Trump’s vision of the United States as being under siege from illegal immigrants, crime and terrorism and losing influence in the world.

“I am more optimistic about the future of America than ever before,” Obama said at the Wells Fargo Center, a basketball and hockey arena.

A former first lady and U.S. senator, Clinton made history on Tuesday when she became the first woman to secure the presidential nomination of a major party. She will lead the Democrats against Republican nominee Trump.

Obama took aim at Trump’s campaign slogan and promise to “Make America Great Again.”

“America is already great.

America is already strong. And I promise you, our strength, our greatness, does not depend on Donald Trump,” he said.

“Preach!” members of the crowd shouted. “Best president ever,” someone screamed.

Obama listed what he described as progress during his two terms in office, such as recovery from an economic recession, the Obamacare healthcare reform and the 2011 killing of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

He said American values, not race, religion or political preference, were what made the United States great.

“That’s why anyone who threatens our values, whether fascists or communists or jihadists or homegrown demagogues, will always fail in the end,” Obama said. (rtr)

Turkey dismisses military, shuts media outlets as crackdown deepens

ANKARA - Turkey on Wednesday deepened a crackdown on suspected followers of a U.S.-based cleric it blames for a failed coup, dismissing nearly 1,700 military personnel and shutting 131 media outlets, moves that may spark more concern among its Western allies.

So far, tens of thousands of people - including police, judges and teachers - have been suspended or placed under investigation since the July 15-16 coup, which Turkey says was staged by a faction within the military loyal to the Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen.

Gulen, who lives in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania but whose movement has a wide following in Turkey where it runs a large network of schools, has denied any involvement in the failed putsch.

Western governments and human rights groups, while condemning the abortive coup in which at least 246 people were killed and more than 2,000 injured, have expressed concern over the extent of the crackdown, suggesting President Tayyip Erdogan may be using it to stifle dissent and tighten his grip on power.

Wiranto demands proof from parties on human rights violation accusations

JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Wiranto has called on several parties that have accused him of involvement in cases of human rights violations to clearly prove their accusations.

“I am hoping that the issues regarding my involvement in cases of human rights violations can be proved in detail, when and where.

I will tender my explanation on each accusation,” he affirmed following the handover ceremony for the coordinating ministers post at the Coordinating Ministry of Political, Legal and Security Affairs Ministrys office building in Jakarta on Thursday.

Wirantos appointment as the new coordinating minister by President Joko Widodo on Wednesday in Jakarta drew criticism from several parties.

The former military commander is deemed responsible for several gross human rights violations, according to reports submitted to the National Commission on Human Rights.

The cases include the Trisakti University tragedy in May 1998,

Semanggi I and II incidents, and the abduction and disappearance of pro-democracy activists in 1997 and 1998, as well as the Bloody Biak incident.

Moreover, the Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence made another important revelation that Wirantos name had appeared in a special 92-page report released by the United Nations under the “Serious Crimes Unit” mandate.

The report claimed that the former aide to President Suharto during the 1987-1991 period had failed to fulfill his responsibilities as the highest commander of the Military and Police forces in Timor Leste to prevent human rights violations and is also deemed to have failed in enforcing the law against the perpetrators.

tional jurisdictions, including the United States. Amid all forms of criticism that corner him, Wiranto announced his intentions to continue the efforts pioneered by former coordination minister for political, legal, and security affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan to settle the past cases of gross human rights violations.

The statement refers to the establishment of a special team as suggested during the symposium for the 1965 incident, where hundreds and thousands of Indonesians became victims of the mass slaughter carried out by the members of the anti-Communist Party of Indonesia as well as the formation of an integrated team to settle the human rights violation cases in Papua.

“Luhut had taken steps to settle the past cases of human rights violations, and I will continue those measures in ways that are just, transparent, and dignified, without harming the national interest, which remains the top priority,” Wiranto added. (ant)

JAKARTA - More than 300 police personnel have been deployed to oversee the imminent executions of drug convicts on the notorious Nusakambangan prison island in Cilacap, Central Java.

“More than 300 personnel have been deployed by the Central Java Police to oversee the executions,” National Police Spokesman Senior Commissioner Martinus Sitompul remarked at the National Police Headquarters here on Thursday.

According to Sitompul, hundreds of police personnel, as part of the 2016 Nusa Candi Operation, have been split into an escort team, security team, and firing squad.

Ahead of the executions of the drug convicts, security arrangements have been beefed up at the Wijay-

apura dock area in Cilacap.

The officers of the Cilacap District Police were present at the dock area on Wednesday and had placed a barricade made of bamboo at the end of the road leading to the special crossing to the Nusakambangan prison.

Hence, only vehicles of officials, guests, and broadcasting teams from numerous national TV stations are allowed access to the parking area in front of the Wijayapura Port.

The Indonesian Police headquarters has readied a team of shooters to carry out the third round of executions of drug convicts on death row soon.

“The team of shooters stands completely prepared to act as

the executioners,” National Police Head of the Public Relations Division Inspector General Boy Rafli Amar remarked in Jakarta on Monday.

Amar could not as yet reveal details on the number of shooters that have been prepared for the task. Besides the shooters, the Police have also tied up with physicians and escort teams to help the Attorney Generals Office carry out the executions.

However, Attorney General HM Prasetyo has not as yet confirmed the date of the third round of executions.

“It is not as easy as you think since human lives are involved.

LONDON - Shockwaves from Britain’s vote to leave the European Union are reverberating through the economy with surveys published on Thursday showing a sharp dive in consumer confidence and a slowdown in the construction sector. A month after the Brexit vote, the latest signals of a sharp economic slowdown are likely to add to expectations of action from the Bank of England on Aug. 4 when most economists say it will cut interest rates and might start buying bonds again.

An index of consumer confidence plunged nearly five points to 106.6 in July - matching a fall seen in October 2014 - to touch its lowest level in a monthly survey in three years, polling firm YouGov and the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) said.

“The public are still absorbing the EU referendum result but it is clear that consumer confidence has taken a significant and clear dive in the month after the Brexit vote,” Stephen Harmston, Head of YouGov Reports, said. People are particularly worried about what will happen to the value of their homes, the survey found.

“If homeowners’ fears over their property prices are realised then there could be a very serious impact to both the housing sector and the economy in general,” CEBR director Scott Corfe said.

Economists say spending by consumers offers the best hope that Britain can avoid a Brexit recession. But retailers said ales fell sharply after the referendum, according to a survey published on Wednesday.

Located in Sebatu Hamlet, Tegallalang, Ginayar, Pasiraman Dalem Pingit Sebatu is one of several temples where one can purifiy one’s soul with holy water. Although this temple is not as renown as Tirta Empul Temple in Tampaksiring, since it was first discovered in 2007, Pingit Sebatu Temple has become quite popular, especially amongst Balinese Hindus.

Sometime in 2007, a foreign visitor was looking for a quite place to bath near the village and found this small waterfall nestled amongst the trees. At the time the villagers did not use this place for purification purposes. The strange thing about this water was that when the foreigner went to bath in the small waterfall, the water changed color and became milky white. Word spread amongst the villagers and the village chief and head priest of Sebatu Village got wind of the strange tale and requested an indication about whether this place

should be officially designated as holy.

Believe it or not people who come here to purify themselves in the waters of Sebatu can see the water change color -though it does not always turn white, sometimes the water turns brown or yellowish.

To get to Genah Melukat Tirta Pingit takes about 1 hour from Tegallalang. After reaching Sebatu Village there is a fork in the road where there is a sign that reads “Genah Melukat” on the right. About 2 km further, after after Gunung Kawi Sebatu, one reaches the rather large parking lot that is not far from the waterfall. About 200 meters away one reaches the 150 steps that lead down to Genah Melukat Tirta Pingit Sebatu. The walk down is quite pleasant with a fresh natural countryside atmosphere and the soft sound of rushing water coming out of the waterspouts and also directly out of the earth as it cascades over the rocks.

Before reaching the purification site, there are three bamboo waterspouts with a small shrine where Balinese Hindus will usually stop to ask for permission to enter the site and offer canang (flower offerings) and incense in thanks. The purification site is located lower down still.

Before entering the temple site of Tirta Pingit, Balinese Hindus will pray again asking for permission to purify themselves in the holy water.

The water used for the purification is crystal clear and drinkable so it is not surprising that many people

will fill jerry cans of the holy water or buy water from locals who sell it already bottled, to bring home with them.

On auspicious days like on the full moon, Tirta Pingit Temple is filled with Balinese Hindus who

come to purify themselves (melukat). There are also many visitors –both domestic and foreign who also come here to purify themselves in this water that is believed to have the holy power to cleanse the soul. (kmb)

Australia’ Northern Territory on Wednesday suspended the use of hoods and restraints on children after the broadcasting of CCTV footage showing guards at a juvenile detention centre teargassing aboriginal inmates and strapping a half-naked, hooded boy to a chair. Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has ordered a Royal Commission in the treatment of children in the detention centre, the most powerful inquiry in the country, rejecting calls for a national inquiry.

U.N. Special Rapporteur on Torture, Juan Mendez, told Australia’s Radio National on Thursday that the video suggested that torture may have taken place and welcomed the inquiry but warned against limiting its scope.

“It’s hard to tell only from the video or the press coverage but I do think that it’s a very worrisome development that can amount to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment under any circumstance...,” he said.

He said that there was no question that very severe pain and suffering had occurred and that the perpetrators seem to be representatives of the state. If others knew and did nothing, they too could be punished alongside those who actually committed the violence, he said.

The footage, showing six aboriginal boys being stripped naked, strapped to a chair with a hood, thrown by the neck into a cell and held for long periods in solitary confinement, was shot between 2010 and 2014 at the Don Dale Youth Detention Centre near Darwin in the Northern Territory.

A report into some of the incidents by the Northern Territory Children’s Commissioner in 2015 found fault with the guards’ behaviour, but the findings were disputed by the then head of prisons and not acted upon, said Australian Broadcasting Corp, who aired the footage.

The Northern Territory’s corrections minister was sacked on Tuesday, just hours after the broadcast.

The case highlights concern about the disproportionate numbers of aboriginal youth in custody, with indigenous leaders calling for politicians to deal with the wider issue of the treatment of Aborigines in Australia. (rtr)

“What has enabled France to break up a large number of terrorist networks is keeping these people under ‘S file’ surveillance, which allows intelligence services to work without these individuals being aware,” he said on Europe 1 radio.

BANGLI - Residents of Pule hamlet, Kawan, Bangli continue to be messed around with the presence of unmanaged waste of Kidul Market. Request of the handling to district government has often been delivered. Unfortunately, it has never got a response. Finally it resulted in an allegation if the performance of district government is not serious in tackling the environmental problem.

Chief of Pule hamlet, I Nyoman Maret Adnyana, said on Tuesday (Jul. 26) that the emergence of complaint about the waste generated by a number of fish and meat mongers is not a new problem, but has become a classic problem having taken place since the past few years. “It has frequently been

complained by residents. They did not stand with the marked smell,” he said.

He added that the waste also causes rundown impression at the surrounding environment and potentially becomes a source of disease outbreaks, especially amid the rampant dengue cases. Responding

to this issue, as a representative of residents he has protested verbally and in writing to the Bangli Industry and Trade Agency and the Environment Agency.

Unfortunately, it has never been followed up. District government is accused of not being serious in addressing the environmental issues. “The protests have often been conveyed so that it can be addressed quickly.

Unfortunately, it is not obeyed,” he growled.

To avoid from continuous complaints of residents, Adnyana hoped the district government to im-

mediately intervene by providing short- and long-term solutions such as construction of waste water treatment plant (WWTP). “If this problem persists, it will be more annoying the comfort, especially during sunshine after it rains,” he said.

One of local fish mongers admitted that all this time there is no place to hold the waste. She argued the waste is directly disposed of in the sewer located around the market. “I do not see any storage of waste around the market,” she said.

When confirmed separately,

the Head of the Bangli Environment Agency (BLH), I Made Alit Parwata, has not given straightforward responses related to the waste handling. He argued that his agency is still coordinating with the division head responsible for the matter. Previously he already promised to provide storage in the form of a drum. However, it seems to have not been realized yet because no drum is seen around the market area. “It will be coordinated first with the division head about the technique of implementation,” he said simply. Pedophilia case leads to human trafficking

DENPASAR - Pedophilia case with defendant Robert Andrew Fiddes Ellis from Australia was resumed at the Denpasar District Court, Tuesday (Jul. 26). The trial closed to the public presented witnesses KP and KY. Information outside the trial mentioned that the case was alleged to lead to human trafficking.

Such allegation was revealed when there is admission from a victim witness escorted by two people coming to the boarding house of the defendant Robert with the initials

W and S. Allegedly they were also lobbying the victim’s parents so that they let their children stay in place of Robert. It was admitted by the defendant’s attorney.

“Yes, there is an indication of human trafficking in this case.

There are people going to the home of Robert for many times,” said Beny Hariyono.

Pursuant to recognition of Robert, each child coming to his home was given money as much as hundreds of thousands. Other

than money, they were also given bicycles and other toys. W and S alleged to be the intermediary were given up to millions of rupiahs by Robert to buy a motorcycle.

“We hope that both W and S can be presented before the court. It is meant to confirm the statements of witnesses,” hoped Yanuar, another defendant’s attorney.

More sadly, the information obtained told that the targets were mostly children of market porters originating from Karangasem.

Associated with the abuse act committed by Robert, Yanuar mentioned that Robert claimed to have forgotten. Robert just remembered to bathe the children coming to his home. However, based on testimony of the victim witness, the fingers of Robert were inserted into their anus. Victim witness consisting of children admitted not to be happy with the actions of Robert.

Inmates doing time on narcotics charges learn new skills

Many people may consider that the inmates at the Narcotic Prison at Buungan hamlet, Tiga, Susut, Bangli, are not productive and that they simply spend their days eating and sleeping as they wait for their sentence to be done. However upon closer look, this is not the case as many inmates are engaged in productive activities.

This prison that has been in operation sinceApril 2015 is located on an estate with few residences around, making for a quite tranquil atmosphere. As one arrives on the grounds, all one sees are a few parked vehocles and a few officers.

At first glance, this adult prison appears to be devoide of activity.

However as one enters several guards are seen to be strictly guardign the grounds and all visiting guests are cloesly examined similar to at an airport.

Behind the strict security, there is something interesting happening at this prison. The inmates here learn a number of different skills including making sokasi baskets from used newspaper. Twisting the

newspaper into strands may seem useless but with patience these strands are gradually transformed into into valuable products.

One inmate named Ardi, said pursuing such an is a good way to kill time and also is a way to show that inmates are capable of being of benefit to society. “This (craft making—Ed) can also be used to divert my attention from my previous lifestyle” he said when met in person on Wednesday (Jul. 27).

This man from Jakarta also transforms newspapers into miniature vessels and their artisitc value is no less than products made in other regions and the selling price is quite promising. Through this

experience, Ardi has grown a desire to open a waste pocessing business when his sentence is up. “ With this skill I can be independent and not have to burden my parents”, he said.

Behind his busy activities, this skinny inmate nonetheless misses the loving arms of his family. But alas because they are so far away, he can only express his joys and sorros by telephone. “When I was first arrested in Tabanan, my family often visited me. However, after I was moved to this prison (Buungan Prison—Ed) four months ago, they rarely visit because it is so far for them to visit”, he said longingly.

Inmates of this prison also make products from coconut shells. An inmate named Dayat from Bayuwangi for example uses his creative hands to turn this hard material into intricatly carved dragons -a skill he had before being incarcerated.

DENPASAR - A total of 65 out of the 716 Balinese instructors that passed the Province of Bali of selection process, resigned before ever carrying out their duty. The teachers were designated as contra t workers following a decree issued by the governor of Bali aimed at ensuring that young people continue to learn Balinese. At the begniing of August the Bali Cutlture Agency will be finalising all of the matters related to these new instructors and it is expected that more will resign before then.

“Yesterday we assinged all the

instructors to their given regions and in Augsut we will start processing their salary” explained Head of the Bali Cutlure Agency, Dewa Putu Beratha, in Denpasar.

According to Beratha, the 65 instructors are said to have resigned whereas in fact they simply never showed up to sign their employement contracts. The majority of those who backed out had been assigned to teach in Buleleng (20 teachers), with another 15 assigned to Tabana and Ejmbrana respectively. Another 5 teachers were assigned to Gianayr, 3 to Bangli, 3 to Klungkung, 2 to

Denpasar and anpther 2 to Badung.

Beratha said that is is assumed that these instructors are either already under contract somewhere else or did not want to be assigned to teach too far from their homes.

“This is a new position that has opened up for Balinese language instructors, all of whom come from Bali. It is unforteunate to see that some graduates of Balinese language studies do not have a keen sense of wanting to preserve this language, because it could mean that people from outside of Bali will fill these positions”, he complained.

Such activities are part of the rehabilitation program that is intended both to divert the attention of the inmates away from narcotics, as well as to provide them with a skill that they can use when they reintegrated back into their community. “This is as a part of their rehabilitation so that the inmates will not be seen negatively forever” he said.

Activity of the Narcotic Prison, I Nyoman Mudana, stated that based on recent data, there are a total of 106 inmates, most of whom were moved from other prisons in Bali. He admited that is not easy to divert the attentio fo the inmates form narcotics and that the process requires patience and a serious approach. “It usually takea bout four months to divert their attention onto something positive, it cannto be done instantly. Their underlying problems need to be identified first and the support of their parents is also needed”, he explained.

Mudana, who lives in Bitera, Gianyar, said that about 14 percent of the inmates have never been visited by their families. The reasons range from geographc distance to the imnates not wanting to be visited for personal reasons. “ Som eof the imated are also hiding the fact tehat they are in prison”, he added. (sos)

Beratha added that hs agency is attempting to assign the language instructors to positions that are near their homes, however this is not always possible because the needs of each district/municipality do not always correspond to avaible instructors, so sometimes they are assigned to teach outside of ther area.

At present there is only one position that needs to be filled by an instructor from a different region. “For this year, we will leave this position empty and will fill it during the next recruitment periode in 2017”, said Beratha.

Chairman of Commission IV of the Bali House of Representatives, Nyoman Parta, deplored the Balinese language instructor recruitment committee’s lack of foresight in providing for back-up instrictors that has resulted in their being no instructors to to take the place of the 65 instructors who backed out at the last minute.

“We will evaluate the situation and propose a new tactic for the next recruitment periode. Priority will be given to instructors who come from the regions where positions need to be filled”, he said. (kmb32)

SEMARAPURA - The salted fish boiling center at Segara Beach, Kusamba village, Dawan, is now visited by many foreign travelers.

Previously, it was very rundown with a pungent fishy smell from the fish remians, but the facilities have now been imporved upon.’ Kusamaba Village’s traditional process of boiling the fish to preserve them is salt, is now a available for people to enjoy.

As confirmed on Wednesday (Jul. 27) by Head of the Klungkung Livestock, Fisheries and Marine

Resources, I Gusti Ngurah Badiwangsa, currently there are some 78 people involved in salted fish making in Kusamba village. The salted fish producers are all gathered in one place which makes it easy for the LFMR Agenncy to provide guidance and supervision and this year the central governemnt has allocated IDR 1.25 billion to the agency for doing renovations on the salwater fish boiling center.

With this renovation, the air circulation at this salt fish boiling will be

arranged so that it will not complicate breathing. “Air circulation and ventilation will be improved so that the smoke from the wood burning fires will be immediately sucke dout of the building and also so that the air around the boiling area does not become hott”, explained Badiwangsa.

Renovations to the building will also help to make the fish boiling center a more appealing tourist attraction.

The tradional way of processing the fish using firewood and no chemicals is already popular with tourists.

“Apart form the lack of chemicals, we also make sure that the whole process is done hygienically. We do not want things to be done carelessly because this salted fish product is sold throughout Bali”, he added.

One salted fish maker, 32 year old Komang Sunerti explained that there are no chemicals used o the process –just boiling water and alor of salt that they buy from Java because Kusamba’s own salt is too expensive to be used for this type of porocess. Presently there is a lack

of local fish so they are also buying frozen fish from Java. “Frozen fish is more expensive and the quality is lower than fresh fish. However, we resort to using it when local fish stocks are low so that productin can continue”, he said.

Each basket of of 10 salted fish is currently sold for IDR 40,000, but the proce goes doen to IDR 35,000 when local fish is available. “Each group of three can produce up to 200 baskets from 11:00 to 17:00 daily”, added Sunerti. (dwa)

LONDON - A production company involved in making “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has pleaded guilty in a British court to failing to protect actors and workers after an incident in which Harrison Ford’s leg was broken, officials said on Tuesday.

The star, who plays the muchloved character Han Solo, was injured after he became trapped under a rapidly closing metal-framed door during filming in June 2014 at Pinewood Studios, near London.

The power of the door’s drive system was comparable to the weight of a small car, said Britain’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE), a state agency which enforces workplace

safety regulations.

“This was a foreseeable incident,” a spokesman for HSE said in a statement.

“Managing on-set risks in a sensible and proportionate way for all actors and staff -- regardless of their celebrity status -- is vital to protecting both on-screen and off-screen talent, as well as protecting the reputation of the industry,” he said.

The production firm, Londonbased Foodles Production (UK) Ltd, could not immediately be reached for comment. Representatives of the firm entered the guilty plea during a hearing earlier at Milton Keynes Magistrates Court.

Ford, who was 71 at the time, was airlifted to a hospital in Oxford after the incident and later had surgery on his left leg. With global ticket sales worth well over $2 billion, “The Force Awakens”, the seventh instalment of the Star Wars saga, is the third highestgrossing movie in Hollywood history, behind “Avatar” and “Titanic”. Indonesia rebuffs family, global appeals to halt executions

CILACAP — Indonesia rebuffed appeals from distraught relatives, rights advocates and foreign governments to abandon plans to execute 14 people for drug crimes as preparations intensified at the prison island holding death row inmates.

A convoy of ambulances, most of them carrying coffins, arrived Thursday morning at the port town nearest to the Nusa Kambangan prison island, where the mostly foreign drug convicts will be executed by firing squads. Officials began tightening security at the prison several days ago, with more than 1,000 police sent to Cilacap, the port town, and the island.

The European Union and the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights called on Indonesia to impose an immediate moratorium on executions and the Indian and Pakistani governments said they were making urgent efforts to save two nationals among the condemned.

Indonesia has not released an official list of those to be executed but the country’s attorney-general said 14 people would be put to death. Community Legal Aid Institute, which is involved in some of the death row cases, has given names for four Indonesians, six Nigerians, two Zimbabweans, one Indian and one Pakistani.

Lawyers and rights groups have raised serious doubts about the legitimacy of the convictions in several of the drug cases, including that of Pakistani Zulfikar Ali, Indonesian Merri Utami and Nigerian Humphrey Jefferson. About 10 women protesting in Cilacap against Utami’s death sentence were taken away in a

police van on Thursday.

But Muhammad Rum, a spokesman for Indonesia’s attorney-general, said the executions are the “implementation of our positive laws” and will not be delayed or stopped. All the cases have gone through a long legal process including appeals, he said.

“They all have been given chances at all stages.” The foreign ministry also defended the use of capital punishment and the legal process.
