Ed Sheeran to star in TV medieval epic

NEW YORK - British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran, whose music career has been soaring, will play a recurring role in a television epic about a medieval warrior, a report said Monday.

Sheeran, who was the most popular artist globally last year on streaming service Spotify, will appear on “The Bastard Executioner” series on the FX network, The Hollywood Reporter said.

The series, which is being filmed in Wales, follows a 14th century warrior who becomes a traveling executioner at the behest of a divine messenger.

The ginger-bearded 24-year-old will play Sir Cormac, “an ambitious and deadly protege of a high-ranking church elder,” the Hollywood trade publication said.

The series, expected to launch later this year, is being directed by Kurt Sutter who was behind “Sons of Anarchy,” a crime drama about a California motorcycle gang.

Sheeran was a professed fan of “Sons of Anarchy” and performed a song for one of its final episodes.

Sheeran is nominated for the top prize at the upcoming MTV Video Music Awards for “Thinking Out Loud,” in which he performs as a ballroom dancer.

NEW YORK — Madonna, who co-owns Tidal with Jay Z, Beyonce and others, says it’s just the beginning for the streaming service that’s had some troubles since its launch in March.

All the new students of junior, high school and vocational school in Bali started their new 2015/2016 academic year by attending the student orientation term (MOS) at school.

Student orientation without hazing DENPASAR - All the new students of junior, high school and vocational school in Bali started their new 2015/2016 academic year by attending the student orientation term (MOS) at school.

According to the instruction of the Denpasar Education Agency, the student orientation in Denpasar takes place for four days starting on Monday (Jul. 27) to Thursday (Jul. 30).

If in previous years the student orientation implementation was always ‘inserted’ with the practice of hazing, this year the Ministry of Education and Culture has issued a Ministerial Regulation No.55/2014 on New Student Orientation based on the cultivation of character. In essence, any hazing activity is no longer allowed.

Based on the observation of Bali Post, the implementation of student orientation on the first day at a number of schools ran quite smoothly. There are no reports of parents to Denpasar Education Agency or Bali Education Agency complaining about the student orientation implementation.

Some caretakers of intraschool student organization (OSIS) believed to be organizing committee of the orientation ascertained there will be no hazing against their junior classes.

“We are determined to hold the student orientation without hazing. Indeed, through this student orientation, we would like to invite new students to love sanitation and the environment,” said the OSIS Chief of the SMA Saraswati Denpasar high school, Airlangga Kristiawan, when met on the sidelines of the student orientation implementation.

According to Airlangga Kristiawan, his party outlined the major themes

into the tasks to be carried out by new students. One of them is bringing plant fruit in a pot to school. Later on, the plant will be planted at school yard and treated jointly by students. He asserted that the student orientation this year is without the practice of hazing.

“There is no hazing. Instead the student orientation activity is more filled with lectures, such as on the HIV/AIDS, drugs and global warming. In the meantime, to test the mental of students, there are some games in which the punishment will be given by asking them to sing a national song,” he explained.

His party also curbed the long-nailed new students and female students applying thick makeup. “As the punishment for violators, they will be simply told to cut their nails and cleaning up their thick makeup. “For that purpose, the OSIS has prepared nail cutter and facial cleansers. We want them to dress neatly to school,” he said.

Principal of the SMA Saraswati Denpasar high school, Made Budi Adnyana, said that a total of 530 new students taking part in the student orientation. As a teacher, his party claimed to continuously conduct surveillance should there be any OSIS caretakers taking action beyond the orientation provisions launched by the Denpasar

Education Agency.

“Previously, the students entrusted to be the student orientation organizer have been given direction. Essentially, during this orientation the new students will be introduced to school environment. There is no violence and heavy duty. We will continue to monitor and anticipate the occurrence of irregularities,” he said.

The determination to implement a hazing-free student orientation is also expressed by Principal of the SMAN 7 Denpasar high school, Ida Bagus Suyaputra. According to him, his party has designed the student orientation in accordance with the directives of the Minister of Education and Culture that essentially does not allow any violence or burdensome tasks to new students.

To broaden new students’ horizons in the field of tourism, they are required to upload pictures of tourist attractions in Bali to Instagram account with hastag (#) Mosdenpasar.

This creativity is appreciated in particular by the Mayor of Denpasar, Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra, through his Facebook account. “We will monitor the implementation of the student orientation extra tightly until the last day to avoid any burdensome and harmful things to new students both physically and mentally,” he said. BANGLI - Rabies case does not only kill one of the residents of Antugan hamlet, Jehem village, Tembuku, I Nengah Merta, 32, a few months ago. However, this case also claimed a casualty of a young man at Buayang hamlet, Landih village, Bangli subdistrict, I Nyoman Kartawan, 23, Monday (Jul. 27). More seriously, the casualty happened due to empty stock of the anti-rabies vaccines (VAR).

The victim’s father, I Nengah Geban, claimed not to believe in the incident claiming his youngest son. Associated with the chronology, he stated that on June 21 the victim worked at the house of his neighbor, I Nyoman Kari. At his workplace, there is a puppy of a few months old. In daily life, the puppy behaves tame, so that the victim invited it to play with him.

But unexpectedly, the dog suddenly bit the pinkie of his left hand.

Immediately the victim was rushed to Bangli Hospital. Unfortunately, at that time the victim just got antibiotics considering the anti-rabies vaccine (VAR) was out of stock.

After getting medical treatment, the victim returned home.

“The dog biting is just a few months old. It only caused a little bite wound. Besides, I have also taken him to hospital. However, we are only given antibiotics because there was no anti-rabies vaccine,” he said sadly.

Geban added that a month later after the bite case occurred, Saturday (Jul. 25), the victim was taken again to Bangli Hospital as he complained about numbness in his left arm. At that time, the hospital immediately provided him with the first anti-rabies vaccine. The hope to see the condition of his son to be getting better must even be paid by panic. It happened because on Sunday (Jul. 26) around two o’clock in the afternoon the victim was taken again to Bangli Hospital because of vomiting and shortness of breath. Seeing the emergency condition, the Bangli Hospital directly referred the victim to Sanglah Hospital for further treatment and last Monday around 9:35 a.m. the victim died.

“My son has been taken to Sanglah Hospital. Before he died, his condition already dropped but continued to be getting better. He was able to talk to family.

Yesterday morning, his condition dropped again and finally died,” he said. Related to funeral, Geban

mentioned that it has not been determined yet because his party should consult to customary authorities.

In the meantime, the Head of the Bangli Health Agency, I Nengah Nadi, accompanied by the Head of Bangli Livestock and Fisheries Agency, I Wayan Sukartana, justified the chronological event of the bite case.

He also admitted that when the victim was bitten by a puppy, the anti-rabies vaccine stock was empty. Nevertheless, before the victim died, his party has made a preventive effort by asking the victim to observe the dog and immediately report it to the Livestock and Fisheries Agency in order to search for the dog brain sample and then examined it to laboratory to make diagnosis. On June 22, 2015, the Agency instructed the puppy owner to tie it because the next day will be made a sampling and elimination. Similarly, the emergency vaccination was also carried out at Buayang hamlet.

At the time of elimination, the puppy was not found at the home of the owner. At that time, the victim was asked to take a recommendation at the Livestock and Fisheries Agency and Bangli Hospital to get anti-rabies vaccine in Denpasar. However, the victim did not come. “We have already asked the victim to take the recommendation in order to get antirabies vaccine in Denpasar, but he did not come,” he explained.

On June 25, 2015, the victim was contacted again via telephone to take recommendation letter in order to get anti-rabies vaccine in Denpasar. But the victim did not come, either. “We’ve done several attempts to resolve this case. We contacted the victim to get the vaccine but did not come. And the latest information we received mentioned if the victim died and was suspected to have encephalitis diagnosis of rabies,” said Nadi.

In the meantime, to anticipate the recurrence of similar case, Nadi mentioned that his party will intensify dog elimination and vaccination becoming the target other than making a sweeping to residents having been bitten by dog since the past two months and have not got any anti-rabies vaccine. “We will be sweeping and the dissemination will continue to be intensified,” he concluded. Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Microsoft launches Windows 10

SAN FRANCISCO — Microsoft’s new Windows 10 operating system debuts Wednesday, as the longtime leader in PC software struggles to carve out a new role in a world where people increasingly rely on smartphones, tablets and information stored online.

No one’s expected to line up overnight for Windows 10, the way people did 20 years ago for Windows 95. But Microsoft is counting on tens or even hundreds of millions of people to download its latest release for free in the coming months.

The launch will be accompanied by a global marketing campaign for an event the company hopes will be pivotal — both for its own future and for a vast audience of computer users around the world.

Windows 10 is coming to PCs and tablets first, but it’s also designed to run phones, game consoles and even holographic headsets. It has new features, a streamlined Web browser called Edge and a desktop version of Cortana, the online assistant that is Microsoft’s answer to Google Now and Apple’s Siri.

Still, the company insists Windows 10 will seem familiar to users of Windows 7, the six-year-old operating system still running on most PCs. Microsoft and PC makers want to erase the memory of the last big update, 2012’s Windows 8, which alienated many with its jarring, unwieldy design.

Microsoft skipped the name Windows 9, as if to distance itself further from the last release. While many analysts believe Windows 8 made sagging PC sales even worse, it’s unclear if Windows 10 will spur the industry back to growth. (ap)

Android flaw lets hackers Smartwatches open break in with a text message new hacking risk: study SAN FRANSISCO - Cyber security firm Zimperium on Monday warned of a flaw in the world’s most popular smartphone operating system that lets hackers take control with a text message.

“Attackers only need your mobile number, using which they can remotely execute code via a specially crafted media file delivered via MMS (text message),” Zimperium Mobile Security said in a blog post.

“A fully weaponized successful attack could even delete the message before you see it. You will only see the notification.”

Android code dubbed “Stagefright” was at the heart of the problem, according to Zimperium.

Stagefright automatically pre-loads video snippets attached to text messages to spare recipients from the annoyance of waiting to view clips.

Hackers can hide malicious code in video files and it will be unleashed even if the smartphone user never opens it or reads the message, according to research

by Zimperium’s Joshua Drake.

“The targets for this kind of attack can be anyone,” the cyber security firm said, referring to Stagefright as the worst Android flaw discovered to date.

“These vulnerabilities are extremely dangerous because they do not require that the victim take any action to be exploited.”

Malicious code executed by hackers could take

control of smartphones and plunder contents without owners knowing.

Stagefright imperils some 95 percent, or an estimated 950 million, of Android phones, according to the security firm.

Zimperium said that it reported the problem to Google and provided the California Internet firm with patches to prevent breaches.

“Google acted promptly and applied the patches to internal code branches within 48 hours, but unfortunately that’s only the beginning of what will be a very lengthy process of update deployment,” Zimperium said.

It did not appear as though hackers had taken advantage of the Stagefright vulnerability, according to Zimperium.

Updating Android software powering mobile devices is controlled by hardware makers and sometimes telecommunication service carriers, not Google.

While Apple controls the hardware and software in iPhones, iPads, and iPods powered by its mobile operating system, Google makes Android available free to device makers who customize the code and update it as they see fit.

WASHINGTON - The surging market for smartwatches opens up new ground for hackers, according to researchers who found vulnerabilities in all the devices they tested.

A study by Hewlett-Packard’s HP Fortify found “that 100 percent of the tested smartwatches contain significant vulnerabilities, including insufficient authentication, lack of encryption and privacy concerns,” the company said in releasing the findings Wednesday.

The researchers found “that smartwatches with network and communication functionality represent a new and open frontier for cyberattack,” the report said.

The research highlights the cyber risks from the growing number of connected devices -- such as refrigerators, cars, coffee makers and lightbulbs -sometimes referred to as the “Internet of Things.”

Smartwatches could pose special risks because they may store sensitive information such as health data, and could connect to cars and homes to unlock them, HP said.

“Smartwatches have only just started to become a part of our lives, but they deliver a new level of functionality that could potentially open the door to new threats to sensitive information and activities,” said Jason Schmitt, general manager at HP Security.

“As the adoption of smartwatches accelerates, the platform will become vastly more attractive to those who would abuse that access, making it critical that we take precautions when transmitting personal data or connecting smartwatches into corporate networks.”

The HP study looked at 10 smartwatches, along with their Android and Apple iOS cloud and mobile application components.

The biggest problems included weak authentication, making it easy for an attacker to gain access, and a lack of encryption.

“Today, Minister Nurbaya commented on change.org to express her concern for four dolphins in Bali. The petition was created three weeks ago,” Communications Director of Change.org Indonesia Desmarita Murni said on Monday.

The petition was created by an Australian surfer, Craig Brokensha, with the title, “Free four wild dolphins contained in a tiny resort pool.”

Till Monday, the petition had received more than 290 thousand signatures.

According to Murni, Brokensha protested the four captured dolphins being kept in a small, chlorinated pool in Keramas district, Bali.

In her comment, Nurbaya pointed out that she had noticed the petition. She also offered her gratitude for the public’s concern for environmental conservation and animal rescue issues such as the case of the

dolphins in Bali.

“I have been aware of this petition since it was created and have been following its updates,” she remarked. “Thank you for voicing your concern through this petition.

Your support and reports will help us conserve and protect the environment.”

The minister further noted that the petition had been taken very seriously, and an investigation on the matter was underway.

“If the resort carries out any prohibited acts, regardless of whether it is violence or negligence towards the dolphins, we will take firm action,” she emphasized.

In addition, Nurbaya admitted that the petition had promoted the dolphin show extensively, due to which a public discussion on the subject was needed with the involvement of numerous parties.

exported to India in large volumes.

He said that construction, including in Smart Cities, IT, automobiles and auto components could also be explored.

On ‘Digital India’, the Ambassador highlighted the Government of India’s push for greater internet connectivity and services for better governance and to empower the citizens. He said that Indonesia could learn from India’s vast expertise in e-governance which will make government services more efficient, easily accessible and hassle-free.

The Embassy of India and its Consulates in Indonesia have taken enormous steps, including the launch of ‘The Rise of Digital India’ exhibition, in reaching out to the people of Indonesia and to inspire the younger generation.

Reprimand traders peddling on sidewalk

SEMARAPURA - Judicial team of the government of Klungkung held an inspection at several places in the subdistrict of Klungkung, Monday (Jul. 27). Led by Operation Section Head of the Klungkung Municipal Police, I Nyoman Kariyasa, the judicial team curbed the area around Jalan Diponegoro, Kampong Lebah as well as Jalan Raya Gelgel, Gelgel village.

On Jalan Diponegoro at Kampong Lebah, judicial team curbed some stalls using sidewalks and road shoulders to peddle. The officers also curbed the vehicles parked on sidewalk. The judicial team

appealed to traders using sidewalk as well as vehicle owners in order not to use the sidewalk to peddle and park their vehicle. According to him, the infringement has been disturbing pedestrians and road

users. Over the violation, the shop owners and vehicle owners were given a reprimand letter.

The judicial team then resumed the discipline to Jalan Raya Gelgel at Gelgel village. Here the team found a number of offenders such as stalls peddling on sidewalk. One of the shop owners from Gelgel village, I Wayan Suparta, disclosed that the use of sidewalk to peddle has been doing since the pujawali or birthday at the Dasar Buana Temple

at Gelgel. Wayan Suparta objected to be disciplined because all this time the rural credit agency (LPD) of Gelgel customary village has also taken advantage of sidewalk as a park and used the road body for parking space of its customers.

“The LPD is using the sidewalk as a park and parking space. It is not imposed with sanction, how can this happen?” he said.

Seeing the vandalism on the campus of the Undiksha, Arista only hoped that such an action can be discontinued whoever does it.

It is said that along the Jalan Udayana is often used as a hangout place at night by teenagers. Lately, it is alleged to have been made by students after their graduation.

“Such doodles are obviously not good to see. Probably it has been committed by teenagers frequently passing and hanging out at night or students celebrating their graduation day. But I do not know exactly, and never see them scribbling the outer walls of the campus of Undiksha,” she said.

In the meantime, the Rector of the Undiksha Singaraja, Dr. Nyoman Jampel, when met at his office did not deny the incident of doodle activities on the outer wall of the campus so that it looks dirty and full of spray paint graffiti.

“Yes, it has already been taken care of by our security guard at campus. But, yes, we would like

to appeal to the community and teenagers not to do so. Vandalism should no longer become a trend, let alone damage the scenery of an institution,” said Jampel.

He added that several attempts have been made by Jampel, including giving special space for drawing or making graffiti on the wall just at the entrance to the main campus area near the traffic light. “Please express the art on the medium we have prepared along the wall on the west side of the building’s courtyard as a venue for student creativity.

Andrew Hallett, a 54 year old from Australia, for instance, was tricked by two young shemales as he headed home from clubbing. After being invited to Hallett’S hotel on Werkudara in Legian, Kuta, the two suspects allegedly stole AUD 2,000 from him. The suspects were arrested at their boarding house on Jalan Baik-Baik, Kuta, on Thursday (Jul. 23).

Chief of the Kuta Police Criminal Investigation Unit, Dewa Tagel Wijarsa, revealed on Monday (Jul. 27) that the victim first encountered the suspects near his hotel where he was seduced into inviting them up to his room.

“When the victim went to sleep, the two suspects allegedly stole IDR 19.5 million from him,” said Dewa Tagel.

When Hallett woke up, he said that he was shocked to find that the two shemales were gone. He then checked his belongings only to find that his money was gone and so immediately reported the crime to the Kuta Police.

Based on the victim’s report, Dewa Tagel and his officers came to the scene of the crime. Hotel employees including the security guard were also questioned. “The Hotel security guard was familiar with the two suspects, and knew where they lived,” he said.

The police then raided the boarding house and arrested the two suspects who were in home at the time. The stolen money was secured as evidence. “We have often appealed to guests and residents to be more careful and not invite people who they have just met to come home with them,” he said. (kmb36)

Summer camp for Iraqi Shiite boys: training to fight IS

BAGHDAD — A quiet middle-class Shiite neighborhood in western Baghdad was transformed recently into a mini-boot camp, training teenagers for battle against the Islamic State group. The Shiite boys and young men ran through its normally placid streets carrying out mock exercises for urban warfare since the toughest battles against the Sunni extremists are likely to involve street fighting. They were taught how to hold, control and aim light weapons, though they didn’t fire them.

In cities from Baghdad to Basra, summer camps set up by the Popular Mobilization Forces, Iraq’s largest militia umbrella group, are training teens and boys as young as middle school age after the country’s top Shiite cleric issued an edict calling on students to use their school vacations to prepare for battle if they are needed.

With dozens of such camps around the country, hundreds of students have gone through the training though it is impossible to say how many went on to fight the Sunni extremists since those who do so go independently. Of around 200 cadets in a training class visited

by The Associated Press, about half were under the age of 18, with some as young as 15. Several said they intended to join their fathers and older brothers on the front lines.

It’s yet another way minors are being dragged into Iraq’s brutal war as the military, Shiite militias

and Kurdish fighters battle to take back territory from Islamic State militants, who seized much of the country’s north and west over the past year. The Sunni extremists have aggressively enlisted children as young as 10 for combat, as suicide bombers and as executioners in their horrifying videos.

Among those training this month in the streets of Baghdad, 15-yearold Jaafar Osama said he used to want to be an engineer when he grew up, but now he wants to be a fighter. His father is a volunteer fighting with the Shiite militias in Anbar and his older brother is fighting in Beiji, north of Baghdad.

“God willing, when I complete my training I will join them, even if it means sacrificing my life to keep Iraq safe,” he said.

Earlier this summer, the AP saw over a dozen armed young boys, some as young as 10, deployed on the front line with the Shiite militias in western Anbar province.

Baghdad natives Hussein Ali, 12, and his cousin Ali Ahsan, 14, said they joined their fathers on the battlefield after they finished their final exams. Carrying AK-47’s, they paced around the Anbar desert, boasting of their resolve to liberate the predominantly Sunni province from IS militants.

“It’s our honor to serve our country,” Hussein Ali said, adding that some of his schoolmates were also fighting. When asked if he was afraid, he smiled and said no. (ap)

Najib is under increasing pressure over leaked confidential documents that allegedly show the money, from state investment fund 1MDB, went into his personal accounts.

Najib announced over national television Tuesday that his deputy Muhyiddin Yassin will be replaced

by Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, a Cabinet member who will also retain his home minister portfolio. Earlier Tuesday, the government announced it had terminated the services of Attorney General Abdul Gani Patail.

Najib said he also dropped four other ministers to strengthen his administration and ensure they can “work as a team.”

“I can accept differences in opinion and criticisms as part of the decision-making process, but these differences in opinion should not be made in an open forum that can affect public perception of the government and the country,” he said. Critics slammed Gani’s abrupt removal and cast it as an attempt by Najib to avoid prosecution.

“The purge commences. The Attorney-General is replaced.

Any flicker of hope that the prime minister might be charged for misdeeds is extinguished,” opposition

lawmaker Tony Pua tweeted.

“The fact that he is not answering the allegations but instead removed his critics is not a good sign,” said Wan Saiful Wan Jan, who heads the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs think tank. “It shows deep desperation on Najib’s side.”

Muhyiddin, the deputy, has been critical of the government’s handling of 1MDB’s massive debt and on Sunday night repeated his call for Najib to explain the alleged funds transfer. Najib said, “The decision to replace Muhyiddin was a very difficult one, but I had to do it so that a strong team can move forward.”

Gani was replaced by a Federal Court judge, Mohamed Apandi Ali, months before the attorney general had been due to retire in October.

The government said Gani was leaving for health reasons, but when contacted by Malay Mail Online, Gani said he had not been aware of the decision.

Gani confirmed earlier this month that he had received documents from investigators that linked Najib and 1MDB. The existence of the documents, which allegedly show $700 million was wired from

entities linked to 1MDB into Najib’s accounts, were first reported

by The Wall Street Journal.

Najib has not disputed the existence of the accounts or the receipt of the funds. He has only said that he has never used government funds for personal gain, and called the allegations a political sabotage. Officials with 1MDB also have denied wrongdoing. The documents sent to the attorney general pave the way for possible criminal charges, which would be a first for a Malaysian prime minister.

Apart from Muhyiddin, Najib also dropped Shafie Apdal as rural development minister. Shafie, a vice president in Najib’s ruling Malay party, has also been critical of the government’s handling of the 1MDB saga. On Tuesday he defended his comments, saying in a statement that they were aimed at strengthening the party and putting the country on the right track.

Najib’s ruling National Front coalition has been in power since independence from Britain in 1957.

However, support for the coalition has eroded in the last two general elections. In 2013, it won the polls but lost the popular vote for the first time. (ap)

BUSINESS China stocks fall again, despite government efforts

SHANGHAI - Chinese shares sank on Tuesday, a day after Shanghai’s steepest slide in eight years, defying renewed government vows of support that analysts warned were not enough to settle nervous investors.

The fresh losses, in a volatile session, came despite an unprecedented effort by the government of the world’s second largest economy to shore up prices following a monthlong rout.

The recent turmoil followed a stock boom encouraged by the authorities, and their willingness to intervene in the market has raised questions

over their commitment to economic reforms.

The Shanghai Composite Index fell 1.68 percent, or 62.56 points, to 3,663.00 on turnover of 685.1 billion yuan ($112.0 billion) after falling as much as 5.0 percent and rising up to 0.93 percent during the day.

The Shenzhen Composite Index, which tracks stocks on China’s second

exchange, ended down 2.24 percent, or 48.39 points, at 2,111.70 on turnover of 618.8 billion yuan.

Some of China’s legions of small investors -- who dominate the market, unlike most exchanges worldwide, where institutions are the largest stockholders -- say they are heading for the exits.

“I sold 90 percent of my stocks since I saw several reports saying that the market is due for a correction,” said Ling Lihui, a manager at a market research company, who sold last week. Monday’s 8.48 percent fall in

Shanghai was the biggest drop since February 27, 2007 and sent tremors through global bourses.

Although Chinese equity markets are relatively closed to outside investors, there are worries about the health of the country’s underlying economy, which is a key driver of global growth.

TOKYO - Toyota has fallen behind Volkswagen in the race for the world’s biggest automaker title, figures showed Tuesday, as the German giant outsold its Japanese rival in the first half of the year.

Toyota said it sold 5.02 million vehicles worldwide between January and June, falling below earlier figures from Volkswagen of 5.04 million units shifted in the same period.

US-based General Motors was sitting in third spot with 4.86 million in sales.

Camry and Prius maker Toyota broke GM’s decades-long reign as the world’s top automaker in 2008 but lost the crown three years later as Japan’s 2011 earthquake-tsunami disaster hammered production and disrupted the supply chains of the country’s automakers.

In 2012, Toyota again overtook its Detroit rival, which sells the Chevrolet and luxury Cadillac brands, to grab the top spot globally.

But the Japanese automaker is expecting sales this year to slip to

10.15 million from a record 10.23 million vehicles in 2014, owing to a shaky outlook for Japan and as it beefs up its focus on quality after a string of safety scandals.

Volkswagen is now in pole position as the German automaker rides momentum in emerging economies that will likely see it take the top spot in annual global auto sales for the first time in 2015.

Buildings damaged, teenager missing in Indonesian quake

JAYAPURA - A powerful earthquake rocked remote eastern Indonesia on Tuesday, damaging several buildings and leaving a teenage boy missing after he fell into a river.

The 7.0-magnitude quake struck inland in a mountainous area of Papua in the early hours, almost 250 kilometres (150 miles) west of the province’s capital Jayapura at a depth of 52 kilometres, the US Geological Survey said.

“The quake was felt very strongly for four seconds,” said disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. “Residents panicked and rushed out of their homes.”

Rescuers were still trying to reach the area closest to the epicentre in

Memberamo district, which would take several hours, Nugroho added.

An AFP reporter in Jayapura said weak shaking was felt in the city for a few seconds.

One house collapsed and another was partially damaged in Kasonaweja city, not far from the epicentre, while patients were evacuated from a hospital after its walls cracked, said local disaster

agency official Yonas Taudufu.

A 15-year-old boy who was fishing in a river fell into the water when the quake hit and remains missing, he said. A 50-metre (160-foot) crack also appeared in a road.

Both Indonesian authorities and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no threat of any tsunami waves from the quake.

MEDAN - A landslide killed seven people in North Padang Sidempuan sub-district, Padang Sidempuan City, on Monday afternoon.

The landslide buried a house owned by Bisri Lubis who was receiving some guests at the time when the disaster struck, Senior

Commissioner of the North Sumatra Police Helfi Assegaf stated on Tuesday.

The seven casualties are Maryam Lubis (5), Muhammad Al-Imam (2), a two-month-old infant Ibrahim, Zainab Piliang (4), Mariam Piliang (5), Aisyah (8), and Nuraini (30).

Ten people were hit by the land-

slide, but only three survived after being rescued. The three survivors: Nelly Sari (31), Umar (2), and Anisa (8) were rushed to Padang Sidempuan Public Hospital for medical treatment.

Of the seven casualties, five bodies have been found, and two are still missing. (ant)

Indonesia, Britain to step up efforts to fight Islamic State JAKARTA — Indonesia and Britain agreed Monday to step up joint efforts to fight terrorism and the Islamic State group.

British Prime Minister David Cameron said after meeting with Indonesian President Joko Widodo on that both countries are concerned about the threat from the Islamic State militants.

At the start of his two-day visit to the country, Cameron also promised to help provide a package of counter-terrorism support that includes beefing up security at airports in Jakarta and Bali.

He added that around 50 Indonesia’s counter-terrorism officers would be trained in the United Kingdom.

“We have agreed to step up our joint efforts both to tackle the terrorist threat and to counter the extremist narrative,” the British premier told a joint news conference.

He said Britain would seek to learn from Indonesia’s approach

to countering extremism, with an exchange programs between religious and community leaders in Indonesia and the United Kingdom to foster a better understanding of what work.

“ISIL is a shared enemy and it is right we share our expertise by uniting together we can better protect our country from this evil threat,” Cameron said.

An estimated 500 Indonesians have reportedly joined the Islamic State group.

Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim nation with a secular central government, has been battling terrorists since 2002, when militants linked to the Southeast Asian network Jemaah Islamiyah attacked nightclubs in Bali, killing 202 people, mostly tourists.

Euro gets boost from eurozone growth data

NEW YORK - A rise in German business confidence and signs of a pickup in lending in Europe gave a boost to the euro Monday.

The single currency jumped more than one percent against the dollar, hitting $1.1132, the highest level in two weeks, before easing to $1.1091 in late trade.

Behind the gain was a jump in the growth of the M1 measure of eurozone money supply, to 11.8 percent in June, signaling strengthened overall growth.

Ian Shepherdson of Pantheon Macroeconomics said the gain in M1 -- very liquid deposits -- points to a pickup in incomes in households and the private sector.

“In a bank-based economy, overnight demand deposits is the most direct measure of liquidity available to the private economy, and this indicator continues to tell a convincing cyclical recovery story,” Shepherdson said.

“Combined with low inflation, real M1 -- the best leading indicator in the eurozone -- indicates a surge in GDP growth on par with previous record business cycle upturns.”

Added to that was a gain in the Ifo index of German business confidence, which rose to 108 points, the first increase in three months, from 107.5 in June.

Economist Andreas Rees of UniCredit said that “illustrates that German companies have gradually been leaving the Greek crisis behind them.”

“The fundamental upward trend in the German economy which started in autumn of last year is intact,” he said. (afp)

South Korea sees end of MERS threat after outbreak killed 36

SEOUL, South Korea — South Korea said Tuesday it is now virtually free of the deadly MERS virus that killed 36 people and sickened nearly 200 since an outbreak was declared in May. Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn in a government meeting urged people to return to normal as the country hasn’t had a new MERS case in more than three weeks. More than 16,000 people were isolated at hospitals and homes as the government tried to stop the disease’s spread, and the last person was lifted from quarantine on Monday.

“It is the judgment of medical experts and the government that people can now feel safe,” Hwang said in the meeting, according to the prime minister’s office. Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, discovered in 2012, is caused by a coronavirus in the same family as the common

cold and SARS. The disease usually spreads poorly, but experts suspect South Korea’s crowded emergency rooms and hospital wards might have contributed to a wider-than-expected transmission here. South Koreans’ habits of “doctor shopping” — visiting multiple facilities to treat the same illness — and having many friends and relatives visit hospitalized patients also might have contributed. The public alarm over MERS rattled South Korea’s economy, which posted its slowest quarterly growth in more than two years in the three months through June. The Bank of Korea partially

blamed the slowed growth on sapped consumption as foreign tourists cancelled visits and people stayed home in fear of infection.

Authorities in seven countries, including several regions in China, Czech Republic and United Arab Emirates, had advised their citizens against traveling to South Korea over the MERS outbreak, and Vietnam on Tuesday became the last country among them to lift the travel warning, according to Seoul’s foreign ministry.

MANILA, Philippines — Communist rebels killed three soldiers and wounded 13 others in an ambush in a mountainous northern Philippine province, an army commander said Tuesday. The rebels used land mines in the attack late Monday against about 30 soldiers traveling in a convoy of three army trucks in a remote village of Kalinga province’s Pinukpuk township, said Brig. Gen Paul Atal, commander of the 503rd Brigade.

He said the rebels set off the land

mines to disable the trucks and then fired on the soldiers, who fought back, wounding some of the guerrillas who withdrew in the dark. Such hit-and-run tactics has been common in the 46-year-old insurgency, one of Asia’s longest-running. Atal called the use of land mines “a sign of cowardice.”

Communist rebels last week attacked a dozen mostly rural army outposts. Gunfights that ensued killed one guerrilla, while a police officer, a government militiaman and six

villagers were wounded.

After he was installed commander of the army two weeks ago, Lt. Gen. Eduardo Ano promised to cut the strength of the rebels from about 4,200 to 1,000 by next year.

Spain summons Venezuelan ambassador over president’s remarks MADRID — The Spanish foreign ministry has summoned the Venezuelan ambassador to once again protest comments by Venezuela’s president against Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.

The ministry said in a statement it had expressed to Ambassador Mario Isea on Monday the government’s “dislike and rejection of the unacceptable insults made once again”

by President Nicolas Maduro.

Maduro on Saturday called Rajoy a “hitman” in comments on the European Union’s handling of the Greek crisis.

The ambassador was summoned in April for similar reasons and Spain later temporarily recalled its ambassador to Venezuela.

ISLAMABAD — Authorities say the death toll from this month’s flash floods in various parts of Pakistan has risen to 69 and that the floodwater has inundated hundreds of villages in the country’s east, leaving tens of thousands of people homeless.

In a statement, the National Disaster Management Authority said late Monday that the flooding had

affected 300,000 people so far, and warned of more rains this week.

Also Tuesday, Pakistan’s military said its helicopters had evacuated 30 patients and tourists from the badly flooded northern city of Chitral to the city of Peshawar.

foreigners, are confused to look for this waterfall. Not a few visitors are forced to turn back because of confusion when looking for the location. Similarly, many residents of Tabanan, except for villagers of Pujungan, do not know about this

waterfall.

To reach the Blemantung waterfall, visitors must ask local villagers of Pujungan. Understandably, there is no official signpost. When arriving at the office of Pujungan headman, visi-

It is the usual driveway taken by visitors because there is no signpost so that visitors wishing to get to the waterfall may go too far and are forced to turn back. Cavaliers sign guard Matthew Dellavedova to 1-year contract CLEVELAND — Matthew Dellavedova has hustled his way back to the Cavaliers. Dellavedova, who emerged as an unlikely postseason hero when All-Star guard Kyrie Irving was injured, signed a $1.2 million contract for next season on Monday.

He had been a restricted free agent, and although the Cavs signed Mo Williams this summer to be Irving’s primary backup, the team wanted to keep Dellavedova because of the energy he brings off the bench.

Dellavedova accepted the Cavs’ qualifying offer and he can be an unrestricted free agent next summer when the league’s salary cap will expand. He made $816,000 last season.

The Australian has endeared himself to Cleveland fans, and his teammates adore “Delly” for his non-stop hustle and attitude. Dellavedova started 13 games during the regular season, but was forced into a more prominent role in the playoffs because Irving was slowed by injuries.

scored 19 points in a seriesclinching win over Chicago in the second round and he scored 20 in Game 3 of the NBA Finals against Golden State. He was hospitalized following the game for dehydration. In the playoffs, he averaged 7.2 points and 2.7 assists in 24.9 minutes. General manager David Griffin’s goal was to re-sign the Cavs’ core players this summer and he has gotten deals done with LeBron James, Kevin Love, Iman Shumpert, James Jones and Dellavedova.

Chand aims to qualify for Rio Olympics after CAS verdict

NEW DELHI — Indian sprinter Dutee Chand will aim to qualify for next year’s Olympic Games after the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s decision to suspend IAAF rules that could have blocked women with high levels of male hormones from competing in Rio de Janeiro.

“I’ve been through a lot but I’m happy with the judgment,”

the 19-year-old Chand told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Tuesday. “My immediate aim is to qualify for the Rio Olympics but I also know that age is on my side and I can realize my dream of winning several medals for India.”

Chand was suspended last year due to hyperandrogenism — the presence of high levels of testos-

terone in some females — which made her ineligible under the rules of the IAAF, the governing body for track and field.

She missed out on last year’s Commonwealth Games and Asian Games but was cleared to compete earlier this year pending a final verdict in her CAS case.

The rules requiring some female athletes to get medical clearance

were introduced in 2011, after South African 800-meter runner Caster Semenya was sidelined for almost a year after winning the 2009 world title when she was 18.

But the CAS said Monday the world athletics body failed to prove that women with naturally high levels of testosterone had a competitive edge. It gave the IAAF two years to provide evidence in

support of its theory or else the rules will be declared void.

“The Indian government has helped me a lot in all this and I hope they back me more and I’m able to practice in the US in the coming months,” she added. The sports and gender activist who pushed Chand to approach the CAS termed the decision as “historic.” (rtr)

MONTREAL — The Montreal Impact added an established scoring presence when they traded for former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba on Monday. Drogba moves to North America following his second spell at Chelsea, where he won the league title last season. The 37-year-old Ivory Coast forward signed with the Chicago Fire, who then sent him to the Impact for general and targeted allocation money.

Drogba is expected to join Impact later this week after receiving his international transfer certificate and work visa. “It’s an honor to welcome Didier Drogba to the Impact,” club president Joey Saputo said.

Drogba scored 163 goals and won four Premier League titles in two stints with Chelsea. He had the winning penalty kick as Chelsea won its first Champions League crown in 2012. The Impact had been seeking an elite forward since Italian veteran Marco Di Vaio, who joined the club as a designated player in its first MLS campaign in 2012, retired after last season.

Now Miguel Herrera’s off-field composure is being questioned after a television sports anchor claimed the coach punched him at the Philadelphia airport following Mexico’s 3-1 victory over Jamaica to take the Gold Cup. Television Azteca sports anchor Christian Martinoli described the

incident Monday on a Television Azteca program. He said Herrera apparently wanted to hit him again but fellow sports commentator Luis Garcia got between them.

Martinoli has criticized Herrera’s performance as coach as have many Mexicans.

The Mexican Soccer Federation did not respond to requests for comment about Martinoli’s allegations about the incident Sunday, and Herrera did not comment. Azteca

issued a statement calling for “a prompt and urgent investigation” of the incident.

“We are surprised and concerned by the behavior of the national team coach,” the statement said.

“The Mexican Soccer Federation should not allow attacks like the one suffered by our colleague.”

The short, stocky Herrera gained notoriety for his effusive sideline celebrations at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. (ap)

PARMA, Italy — A new Parma club backed by pasta maker Guido Barilla and other business executives has been approved to compete in Serie D after the previous squad went bankrupt.

The Italian football federation chose the team named Parma Calcio 1913 — after the founding year of the city’s original squad — over another entrant led by Giuseppe Corrado, who runs a national cinema chain. Parma Calcio 1913 has the

backing of the city’s mayor.

In March, Parma was declared bankrupt with debts of more than 200 million euros ($220 million). After finishing last in Serie A, Parma was disbanded when no buyer came forward willing to take on the debt.

The new team’s president is former coach Nevio Scala, the 67-year-old who led Parma to three European trophies in the 1990s. (ap)

GENEVA - FIFA boss Sepp Blatter deserves a Nobel Prize for his stewardship of soccer’s governing body, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in an interview aired by Swiss broadcaster RTS on Monday. On Saturday, at a meeting with Putin in St Petersburg, Blatter said that FIFA, facing a major bribery scandal, had passed a resolution offering full support for holding the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

“We all know the situation developing around Mr Blatter right now. I don’t want to go into details but I don’t believe a word about him being inolved in corruption personally,” he said.

“I think people like Mr Blatter or the heads of big international sporting federations, or the Olympic Games, deserve special recognition.

If there is anyone who deserves the Nobel Prize, it’s those people.”

Blatter announced he was quitting in June over a bribery scandal being investigated by U.S., Swiss and other law enforcement agencies that plunged FIFA into the worst cri-

sis in its 111-year history. Officials have been indicted though Blatter himself has not and he denies any misconduct.

The scandal has cast a cloud over the forthcoming World Cups in Russia and Qatar, but Russian officials have dismissed any suggestion Russia could be stripped of the contest. In May, when the scandal broke, Putin harshly criticised the U.S. investigation into FIFA as meddling in matters that were outside its jurisdiction.

He rekindled that criticism in the interview broadcast on Monday, and widened it to include Britain, noting that those two countries had bid to host the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. “The way there is this fight against corrpution makes me wonder if it isn’t a continuation of the bids for 2018 and 2022.”

PARMA, Italy — A new Parma club backed by pasta maker Guido Barilla and other business executives has been approved to compete in Serie D after the previous squad went bankrupt.

The Italian football federation chose the team named Parma Calcio 1913 — after the founding year of the city’s original squad — over another entrant led by Giuseppe Corrado, who runs a national cinema chain. Parma Calcio 1913 has the

backing of the city’s mayor.

In March, Parma was declared bankrupt with debts of more than 200 million euros ($220 million). After finishing last in Serie A, Parma was disbanded when no buyer came forward willing to take on the debt.

GENEVA - FIFA boss Sepp Blatter deserves a Nobel Prize for his stewardship of soccer’s governing body, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in an interview aired by Swiss broadcaster RTS on Monday. On Saturday, at a meeting with Putin in St Petersburg, Blatter said that FIFA, facing a major bribery scandal, had passed a resolution offering full support for holding the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

“We all know the situation developing around Mr Blatter right now. I don’t want to go into details but I don’t believe a word about him being inolved in corruption personally,” he said.

“I think people like Mr Blatter or the heads of big international sporting federations, or the Olympic Games, deserve special recognition.

If there is anyone who deserves the Nobel Prize, it’s those people.”

Blatter announced he was quitting in June over a bribery scandal being investigated by U.S., Swiss and other law enforcement agencies that plunged FIFA into the worst cri-

sis in its 111-year history. Officials have been indicted though Blatter himself has not and he denies any misconduct.

The scandal has cast a cloud over the forthcoming World Cups in Russia and Qatar, but Russian officials have dismissed any suggestion Russia could be stripped of the contest. In May, when the scandal broke, Putin harshly criticised the U.S. investigation into FIFA as meddling in matters that were outside its jurisdiction.

He rekindled that criticism in the interview broadcast on Monday, and widened it to include Britain, noting that those two countries had bid to host the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. “The way there is this fight against corrpution makes me wonder if it isn’t a continuation of the bids for 2018 and 2022.”

An economic crisis has forced cut-backs in Russia’s World Cup preparations, but Putin and FIFA officials have said this will not affect Russia’s ability to host the championship. (rtr)

Cavaliers sign guard Matthew Dellavedova to 1-year contract CLEVELAND — Matthew Dellavedova has hustled his way back to the Cavaliers. Dellavedova, who emerged as an unlikely postseason hero when All-Star guard Kyrie Irving was injured, signed a $1.2 million contract for next season on Monday.

He had been a restricted free agent, and although the Cavs signed Mo Williams this summer to be Irving’s primary backup, the team wanted to keep Dellavedova because of the energy he brings off the bench.

Dellavedova accepted the Cavs’ qualifying offer and he can be an unrestricted free agent next summer when the league’s salary cap will expand. He made $816,000 last season.

The Australian has endeared himself to Cleveland fans, and his teammates adore “Delly” for his non-stop hustle and attitude. Dellavedova started 13 games during the regular season, but was forced into a more prominent role in the playoffs because Irving was slowed by injuries.

scored 19 points in a seriesclinching win over Chicago in the second round and he scored 20 in Game 3 of the NBA Finals against Golden State. He was hospitalized following the game for dehydration. Dellavedova played in 67 games during the regular season, averaging 4.8 points, 3.0 assists and 1.9 rebounds in 20.6 minutes. He shot a career-high .407 percentage from the 3-point line.

In the playoffs, he averaged 7.2 points and 2.7 assists in 24.9 minutes. General manager David Griffin’s goal was to re-sign the Cavs’ core players this summer and he has gotten deals done with LeBron James, Kevin Love, Iman Shumpert, James Jones and Dellavedova.

The Cavs remain interested in re-signing free agents Tristan Thompson and J.R. Smith. Cleveland also traded center Brendan Haywood — and his expiring $10.5 million contract — and forward Mike Miller to Portland for two trade exceptions and to save luxurytax money. (ap)

Chand aims to qualify for Rio Olympics after CAS verdict

NEW DELHI — Indian sprinter Dutee Chand will aim to qualify for next year’s Olympic Games after the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s decision to suspend IAAF rules that could have blocked women with high levels of male hormones from competing in Rio de Janeiro.

“I’ve been through a lot but I’m happy with the judgment,”

the 19-year-old Chand told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Tuesday. “My immediate aim is to qualify for the Rio Olympics but I also know that age is on my side and I can realize my dream of winning several medals for India.”

Chand was suspended last year due to hyperandrogenism — the presence of high levels of testos-

terone in some females — which made her ineligible under the rules of the IAAF, the governing body for track and field.

She missed out on last year’s Commonwealth Games and Asian Games but was cleared to compete earlier this year pending a final verdict in her CAS case.

The rules requiring some female athletes to get medical clearance

were introduced in 2011, after South African 800-meter runner Caster Semenya was sidelined for almost a year after winning the 2009 world title when she was 18.

But the CAS said Monday the world athletics body failed to prove that women with naturally high levels of testosterone had a competitive edge. It gave the IAAF two years to provide evidence in

support of its theory or else the rules will be declared void.

“The Indian government has helped me a lot in all this and I hope they back me more and I’m able to practice in the US in the coming months,” she added. The sports and gender activist who pushed Chand to approach the CAS termed the decision as “historic.” (rtr)

SEOUL, South Korea — South Korea said Tuesday it is now virtually free of the deadly MERS virus that killed 36 people and sickened nearly 200 since an outbreak was declared in May. Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn in a government meeting urged people to return to normal as the country hasn’t had a new MERS case in more than three weeks. More than 16,000 people were isolated at hospitals and homes as the government tried to stop the disease’s spread, and the last person was lifted from quarantine on Monday.

“It is the judgment of medical experts and the government that people can now feel safe,” Hwang said in the meeting, according to the prime minister’s office. Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, discovered in 2012, is caused by a coronavirus in the same family as the common

cold and SARS. The disease usually spreads poorly, but experts suspect South Korea’s crowded emergency rooms and hospital wards might have contributed to a wider-than-expected transmission here. South Koreans’ habits of “doctor shopping” — visiting multiple facilities to treat the same illness — and having many friends and relatives visit hospitalized patients also might have contributed. The public alarm over MERS rattled South Korea’s economy, which posted its slowest quarterly growth in more than two years in the three months through June. The Bank of Korea partially

blamed the slowed growth on sapped consumption as foreign tourists cancelled visits and people stayed home in fear of infection.

Authorities in seven countries, including several regions in China, Czech Republic and United Arab Emirates, had advised their citizens against traveling to South Korea over the MERS outbreak, and Vietnam on Tuesday became the last country among them to lift the travel warning, according to Seoul’s foreign ministry.

MANILA, Philippines — Communist rebels killed three soldiers and wounded 13 others in an ambush in a mountainous northern Philippine province, an army commander said Tuesday. The rebels used land mines in the attack late Monday against about 30 soldiers traveling in a convoy of three army trucks in a remote village of Kalinga province’s Pinukpuk township, said Brig. Gen Paul Atal, commander of the 503rd Brigade.

He said the rebels set off the land

mines to disable the trucks and then fired on the soldiers, who fought back, wounding some of the guerrillas who withdrew in the dark. Such hit-and-run tactics has been common in the 46-year-old insurgency, one of Asia’s longest-running. Atal called the use of land mines “a sign of cowardice.”

Communist rebels last week attacked a dozen mostly rural army outposts. Gunfights that ensued killed one guerrilla, while a police officer, a government militiaman and six

villagers were wounded.

After he was installed commander of the army two weeks ago, Lt. Gen. Eduardo Ano promised to cut the strength of the rebels from about 4,200 to 1,000 by next year.

Spain summons Venezuelan ambassador over president’s remarks MADRID — The Spanish foreign ministry has summoned the Venezuelan ambassador to once again protest comments by Venezuela’s president against Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.

The ministry said in a statement it had expressed to Ambassador Mario Isea on Monday the government’s “dislike and rejection of the unacceptable insults made once again”

by President Nicolas Maduro.

Maduro on Saturday called Rajoy a “hitman” in comments on the European Union’s handling of the Greek crisis.

The ambassador was summoned in April for similar reasons and Spain later temporarily recalled its ambassador to Venezuela.

ISLAMABAD — Authorities say the death toll from this month’s flash floods in various parts of Pakistan has risen to 69 and that the floodwater has inundated hundreds of villages in the country’s east, leaving tens of thousands of people homeless.

In a statement, the National Disaster Management Authority said late Monday that the flooding had

affected 300,000 people so far, and warned of more rains this week.

Also Tuesday, Pakistan’s military said its helicopters had evacuated 30 patients and tourists from the badly flooded northern city of Chitral to the city of Peshawar.

BUSINESS China stocks fall again, despite government efforts

SHANGHAI - Chinese shares sank on Tuesday, a day after Shanghai’s steepest slide in eight years, defying renewed government vows of support that analysts warned were not enough to settle nervous investors.

The fresh losses, in a volatile session, came despite an unprecedented effort by the government of the world’s second largest economy to shore up prices following a monthlong rout.

The recent turmoil followed a stock boom encouraged by the authorities, and their willingness to intervene in the market has raised questions

over their commitment to economic reforms.

The Shanghai Composite Index fell 1.68 percent, or 62.56 points, to 3,663.00 on turnover of 685.1 billion yuan ($112.0 billion) after falling as much as 5.0 percent and rising up to 0.93 percent during the day.

The Shenzhen Composite Index, which tracks stocks on China’s second

exchange, ended down 2.24 percent, or 48.39 points, at 2,111.70 on turnover of 618.8 billion yuan.

Some of China’s legions of small investors -- who dominate the market, unlike most exchanges worldwide, where institutions are the largest stockholders -- say they are heading for the exits.

“I sold 90 percent of my stocks since I saw several reports saying that the market is due for a correction,” said Ling Lihui, a manager at a market research company, who sold last week. Monday’s 8.48 percent fall in

TOKYO - Toyota has fallen behind Volkswagen in the race for the world’s biggest automaker title, figures showed Tuesday, as the German giant outsold its Japanese rival in the first half of the year.

Toyota said it sold 5.02 million vehicles worldwide between January and June, falling below earlier figures from Volkswagen of 5.04 million units shifted in the same period.

US-based General Motors was sitting in third spot with 4.86 million in sales.

Camry and Prius maker Toyota broke GM’s decades-long reign as the world’s top automaker in 2008 but lost the crown three years later as Japan’s 2011 earthquake-tsunami disaster hammered production and disrupted the supply chains of the country’s automakers.

In 2012, Toyota again overtook its Detroit rival, which sells the Chevrolet and luxury Cadillac brands, to grab the top spot globally.

But the Japanese automaker is expecting sales this year to slip to

10.15 million from a record 10.23 million vehicles in 2014, owing to a shaky outlook for Japan and as it beefs up its focus on quality after a string of safety scandals.

Volkswagen is now in pole position as the German automaker rides momentum in emerging economies that will likely see it take the top spot in annual global auto sales for the first time in 2015.

The 7.0-magnitude quake struck inland in a mountainous area of Papua in the early hours, almost 250 kilometres (150 miles) west of the province’s capital Jayapura at a depth of 52 kilometres, the US Geological Survey said.

“The quake was felt very strongly for four seconds,” said disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. “Residents panicked and rushed out of their homes.”

Rescuers were still trying to reach the area closest to the epicentre in

Memberamo district, which would take several hours, Nugroho added.

An AFP reporter in Jayapura said weak shaking was felt in the city for a few seconds.

One house collapsed and another was partially damaged in Kasonaweja city, not far from the epicentre, while patients were evacuated from a hospital after its walls cracked, said local disaster

agency official Yonas Taudufu.

A 15-year-old boy who was fishing in a river fell into the water when the quake hit and remains missing, he said. A 50-metre (160-foot) crack also appeared in a road.

Both Indonesian authorities and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no threat of any tsunami waves from the quake.

The landslide buried a house owned by Bisri Lubis who was receiving some guests at the time when the disaster struck, Senior

The seven casualties are Maryam Lubis (5), Muhammad Al-Imam (2), a two-month-old infant Ibrahim, Zainab Piliang (4), Mariam Piliang (5), Aisyah (8), and Nuraini (30).

Ten people were hit by the land-

slide, but only three survived after being rescued. The three survivors: Nelly Sari (31), Umar (2), and Anisa (8) were rushed to Padang Sidempuan Public Hospital for medical treatment.

Indonesia, Britain to step up efforts to fight Islamic State JAKARTA — Indonesia and Britain agreed Monday to step up joint efforts to fight terrorism and the Islamic State group.

British Prime Minister David Cameron said after meeting with Indonesian President Joko Widodo on that both countries are concerned about the threat from the Islamic State militants.

At the start of his two-day visit to the country, Cameron also promised to help provide a package of counter-terrorism support that includes beefing up security at airports in Jakarta and Bali.

He added that around 50 Indonesia’s counter-terrorism officers would be trained in the United Kingdom.

“We have agreed to step up our joint efforts both to tackle the terrorist threat and to counter the extremist narrative,” the British premier told a joint news conference.

He said Britain would seek to learn from Indonesia’s approach

to countering extremism, with an exchange programs between religious and community leaders in Indonesia and the United Kingdom to foster a better understanding of what work.

“ISIL is a shared enemy and it is right we share our expertise by uniting together we can better protect our country from this evil threat,” Cameron said.

An estimated 500 Indonesians have reportedly joined the Islamic State group.

Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim nation with a secular central government, has been battling terrorists since 2002, when militants linked to the Southeast Asian network Jemaah Islamiyah attacked nightclubs in Bali, killing 202 people, mostly tourists.

Cameron is scheduled to attend a business forum and meet with religious leaders Tuesday before leaving for Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam. (ap)

Euro gets boost from eurozone growth data

NEW YORK - A rise in German business confidence and signs of a pickup in lending in Europe gave a boost to the euro Monday.

The single currency jumped more than one percent against the dollar, hitting $1.1132, the highest level in two weeks, before easing to $1.1091 in late trade.

Behind the gain was a jump in the growth of the M1 measure of eurozone money supply, to 11.8 percent in June, signaling strengthened overall growth.

Ian Shepherdson of Pantheon Macroeconomics said the gain in M1 -- very liquid deposits -- points to a pickup in incomes in households and the private sector.

“In a bank-based economy, overnight demand deposits is the most direct measure of liquidity available to the private economy, and this indicator continues to tell a convincing cyclical recovery story,” Shepherdson said.

“Combined with low inflation, real M1 -- the best leading indicator in the eurozone -- indicates a surge in GDP growth on par with previous record business cycle upturns.”

Added to that was a gain in the Ifo index of German business confidence, which rose to 108 points, the first increase in three months, from 107.5 in June.

Economist Andreas Rees of UniCredit said that “illustrates that German companies have gradually been leaving the Greek crisis behind them.”

“The fundamental upward trend in the German economy which started in autumn of last year is intact,” he said. (afp)

Reprimand traders peddling on sidewalk

SEMARAPURA - Judicial team of the government of Klungkung held an inspection at several places in the subdistrict of Klungkung, Monday (Jul. 27). Led by Operation Section Head of the Klungkung Municipal Police, I Nyoman Kariyasa, the judicial team curbed the area around Jalan Diponegoro, Kampong Lebah as well as Jalan Raya Gelgel, Gelgel village.

users. Over the violation, the shop owners and vehicle owners were given a reprimand letter.

at Gelgel. Wayan Suparta objected to be disciplined because all this time the rural credit agency (LPD) of Gelgel customary village has also taken advantage of sidewalk as a park and used the road body for parking space of its customers.

Seeing the vandalism on the campus of the Undiksha, Arista only hoped that such an action can be discontinued whoever does it.

It is said that along the Jalan Udayana is often used as a hangout place at night by teenagers. Lately, it is alleged to have been made by students after their graduation.

“Such doodles are obviously not good to see. Probably it has been committed by teenagers frequently passing and hanging out at night or students celebrating their graduation day. But I do not know exactly, and never see them scribbling the outer walls of the campus of Undiksha,” she said.

In the meantime, the Rector of the Undiksha Singaraja, Dr. Nyoman Jampel, when met at his office did not deny the incident of doodle activities on the outer wall of the campus so that it looks dirty and full of spray paint graffiti.

“Yes, it has already been taken care of by our security guard at campus. But, yes, we would like

to appeal to the community and teenagers not to do so. Vandalism should no longer become a trend, let alone damage the scenery of an institution,” said Jampel.

He added that several attempts have been made by Jampel, including giving special space for drawing or making graffiti on the wall just at the entrance to the main campus area near the traffic light. “Please express the art on the medium we have prepared along the wall on the west side of the building’s courtyard as a venue for student creativity.

Andrew Hallett, a 54 year old from Australia, for instance, was tricked by two young shemales as he headed home from clubbing. After being invited to Hallett’S hotel on Werkudara in Legian, Kuta, the two suspects allegedly stole AUD 2,000 from him. The suspects were arrested at their boarding house on Jalan Baik-Baik, Kuta, on Thursday (Jul. 23).

Chief of the Kuta Police Criminal Investigation Unit, Dewa Tagel Wijarsa, revealed on Monday (Jul. 27) that the victim first encountered the suspects near his hotel where he was seduced into inviting them up to his room.

“When the victim went to sleep, the two suspects allegedly stole IDR 19.5 million from him,” said Dewa Tagel.

When Hallett woke up, he said that he was shocked to find that the two shemales were gone. He then checked his belongings only to find that his money was gone and so immediately reported the crime to the Kuta Police.

Based on the victim’s report, Dewa Tagel and his officers came to the scene of the crime. Hotel employees including the security guard were also questioned. “The Hotel security guard was familiar with the two suspects, and knew where they lived,” he said.

The police then raided the boarding house and arrested the two suspects who were in home at the time. The stolen money was secured as evidence. “We have often appealed to guests and residents to be more careful and not invite people who they have just met to come home with them,” he said. (kmb36)

Summer camp for Iraqi Shiite boys: training to fight IS

BAGHDAD — A quiet middle-class Shiite neighborhood in western Baghdad was transformed recently into a mini-boot camp, training teenagers for battle against the Islamic State group. The Shiite boys and young men ran through its normally placid streets carrying out mock exercises for urban warfare since the toughest battles against the Sunni extremists are likely to involve street fighting. They were taught how to hold, control and aim light weapons, though they didn’t fire them.

In cities from Baghdad to Basra, summer camps set up by the Popular Mobilization Forces, Iraq’s largest militia umbrella group, are training teens and boys as young as middle school age after the country’s top Shiite cleric issued an edict calling on students to use their school vacations to prepare for battle if they are needed.

With dozens of such camps around the country, hundreds of students have gone through the training though it is impossible to say how many went on to fight the Sunni extremists since those who do so go independently. Of around 200 cadets in a training class visited

by The Associated Press, about half were under the age of 18, with some as young as 15. Several said they intended to join their fathers and older brothers on the front lines.

It’s yet another way minors are being dragged into Iraq’s brutal war as the military, Shiite militias

and Kurdish fighters battle to take back territory from Islamic State militants, who seized much of the country’s north and west over the past year. The Sunni extremists have aggressively enlisted children as young as 10 for combat, as suicide bombers and as executioners in their horrifying videos.

Among those training this month in the streets of Baghdad, 15-yearold Jaafar Osama said he used to want to be an engineer when he grew up, but now he wants to be a fighter. His father is a volunteer fighting with the Shiite militias in Anbar and his older brother is fighting in Beiji, north of Baghdad.

“God willing, when I complete my training I will join them, even if it means sacrificing my life to keep Iraq safe,” he said.

Earlier this summer, the AP saw over a dozen armed young boys, some as young as 10, deployed on the front line with the Shiite militias in western Anbar province.

Baghdad natives Hussein Ali, 12, and his cousin Ali Ahsan, 14, said they joined their fathers on the battlefield after they finished their final exams. Carrying AK-47’s, they paced around the Anbar desert, boasting of their resolve to liberate the predominantly Sunni province from IS militants.

“It’s our honor to serve our country,” Hussein Ali said, adding that some of his schoolmates were also fighting. When asked if he was afraid, he smiled and said no. (ap)

Najib is under increasing pressure over leaked confidential documents that allegedly show the money, from state investment fund 1MDB, went into his personal accounts.

Najib announced over national television Tuesday that his deputy Muhyiddin Yassin will be replaced

by Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, a Cabinet member who will also retain his home minister portfolio. Earlier Tuesday, the government announced it had terminated the services of Attorney General Abdul Gani Patail.

Najib said he also dropped four other ministers to strengthen his administration and ensure they can “work as a team.”

“I can accept differences in opinion and criticisms as part of the decision-making process, but these differences in opinion should not be made in an open forum that can affect public perception of the government and the country,” he said. Critics slammed Gani’s abrupt removal and cast it as an attempt by Najib to avoid prosecution.

“The purge commences. The Attorney-General is replaced.

Any flicker of hope that the prime minister might be charged for misdeeds is extinguished,” opposition

lawmaker Tony Pua tweeted.

“The fact that he is not answering the allegations but instead removed his critics is not a good sign,” said Wan Saiful Wan Jan, who heads the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs think tank. “It shows deep desperation on Najib’s side.”

Muhyiddin, the deputy, has been critical of the government’s handling of 1MDB’s massive debt and on Sunday night repeated his call for Najib to explain the alleged funds transfer. Najib said, “The decision to replace Muhyiddin was a very difficult one, but I had to do it so that a strong team can move forward.”

Gani was replaced by a Federal Court judge, Mohamed Apandi Ali, months before the attorney general had been due to retire in October.

The government said Gani was leaving for health reasons, but when contacted by Malay Mail Online, Gani said he had not been aware of the decision.

Gani confirmed earlier this month that he had received documents from investigators that linked Najib and 1MDB. The existence of the documents, which allegedly show $700 million was wired from

entities linked to 1MDB into Najib’s accounts, were first reported

by The Wall Street Journal.

Najib has not disputed the existence of the accounts or the receipt of the funds. He has only said that he has never used government funds for personal gain, and called the allegations a political sabotage. Officials with 1MDB also have denied wrongdoing. The documents sent to the attorney general pave the way for possible criminal charges, which would be a first for a Malaysian prime minister.

Apart from Muhyiddin, Najib also dropped Shafie Apdal as rural development minister. Shafie, a vice president in Najib’s ruling Malay party, has also been critical of the government’s handling of the 1MDB saga. On Tuesday he defended his comments, saying in a statement that they were aimed at strengthening the party and putting the country on the right track.

Najib’s ruling National Front coalition has been in power since independence from Britain in 1957.

However, support for the coalition has eroded in the last two general elections. In 2013, it won the polls but lost the popular vote for the first time. (ap)

Microsoft launches Windows 10

SAN FRANCISCO — Microsoft’s new Windows 10 operating system debuts Wednesday, as the longtime leader in PC software struggles to carve out a new role in a world where people increasingly rely on smartphones, tablets and information stored online.

No one’s expected to line up overnight for Windows 10, the way people did 20 years ago for Windows 95. But Microsoft is counting on tens or even hundreds of millions of people to download its latest release for free in the coming months.

The launch will be accompanied by a global marketing campaign for an event the company hopes will be pivotal — both for its own future and for a vast audience of computer users around the world.

Windows 10 is coming to PCs and tablets first, but it’s also designed to run phones, game consoles and even holographic headsets. It has new features, a streamlined Web browser called Edge and a desktop version of Cortana, the online assistant that is Microsoft’s answer to Google Now and Apple’s Siri.

Still, the company insists Windows 10 will seem familiar to users of Windows 7, the six-year-old operating system still running on most PCs. Microsoft and PC makers want to erase the memory of the last big update, 2012’s Windows 8, which alienated many with its jarring, unwieldy design.

Microsoft skipped the name Windows 9, as if to distance itself further from the last release. While many analysts believe Windows 8 made sagging PC sales even worse, it’s unclear if Windows 10 will spur the industry back to growth. (ap)

Android flaw lets hackers Smartwatches open break in with a text message new hacking risk: study SAN FRANSISCO - Cyber security firm Zimperium on Monday warned of a flaw in the world’s most popular smartphone operating system that lets hackers take control with a text message.

“Attackers only need your mobile number, using which they can remotely execute code via a specially crafted media file delivered via MMS (text message),” Zimperium Mobile Security said in a blog post.

“A fully weaponized successful attack could even delete the message before you see it. You will only see the notification.”

Android code dubbed “Stagefright” was at the heart of the problem, according to Zimperium.

Stagefright automatically pre-loads video snippets attached to text messages to spare recipients from the annoyance of waiting to view clips.

Hackers can hide malicious code in video files and it will be unleashed even if the smartphone user never opens it or reads the message, according to research

by Zimperium’s Joshua Drake.

“The targets for this kind of attack can be anyone,” the cyber security firm said, referring to Stagefright as the worst Android flaw discovered to date.

“These vulnerabilities are extremely dangerous because they do not require that the victim take any action to be exploited.”

Malicious code executed by hackers could take

control of smartphones and plunder contents without owners knowing.

Stagefright imperils some 95 percent, or an estimated 950 million, of Android phones, according to the security firm.

Zimperium said that it reported the problem to Google and provided the California Internet firm with patches to prevent breaches.

“Google acted promptly and applied the patches to internal code branches within 48 hours, but unfortunately that’s only the beginning of what will be a very lengthy process of update deployment,” Zimperium said.

It did not appear as though hackers had taken advantage of the Stagefright vulnerability, according to Zimperium.

Updating Android software powering mobile devices is controlled by hardware makers and sometimes telecommunication service carriers, not Google.

While Apple controls the hardware and software in iPhones, iPads, and iPods powered by its mobile operating system, Google makes Android available free to device makers who customize the code and update it as they see fit.

WASHINGTON - The surging market for smartwatches opens up new ground for hackers, according to researchers who found vulnerabilities in all the devices they tested.

A study by Hewlett-Packard’s HP Fortify found “that 100 percent of the tested smartwatches contain significant vulnerabilities, including insufficient authentication, lack of encryption and privacy concerns,” the company said in releasing the findings Wednesday.

The researchers found “that smartwatches with network and communication functionality represent a new and open frontier for cyberattack,” the report said.

The research highlights the cyber risks from the growing number of connected devices -- such as refrigerators, cars, coffee makers and lightbulbs -sometimes referred to as the “Internet of Things.”

Smartwatches could pose special risks because they may store sensitive information such as health data, and could connect to cars and homes to unlock them, HP said.

“Smartwatches have only just started to become a part of our lives, but they deliver a new level of functionality that could potentially open the door to new threats to sensitive information and activities,” said Jason Schmitt, general manager at HP Security.

“As the adoption of smartwatches accelerates, the platform will become vastly more attractive to those who would abuse that access, making it critical that we take precautions when transmitting personal data or connecting smartwatches into corporate networks.”

The HP study looked at 10 smartwatches, along with their Android and Apple iOS cloud and mobile application components.

The biggest problems included weak authentication, making it easy for an attacker to gain access, and a lack of encryption.

All the smartwatches collected some form of personal information, such as name, address, date of birth, weight, gender, heart rate and other health information. (afp)

“Today, Minister Nurbaya commented on change.org to express her concern for four dolphins in Bali. The petition was created three weeks ago,” Communications Director of Change.org Indonesia Desmarita Murni said on Monday.

The petition was created by an Australian surfer, Craig Brokensha, with the title, “Free four wild dolphins contained in a tiny resort pool.”

Till Monday, the petition had received more than 290 thousand signatures.

According to Murni, Brokensha protested the four captured dolphins being kept in a small, chlorinated pool in Keramas district, Bali.

In her comment, Nurbaya pointed out that she had noticed the petition. She also offered her gratitude for the public’s concern for environmental conservation and animal rescue issues such as the case of the

dolphins in Bali.

“I have been aware of this petition since it was created and have been following its updates,” she remarked. “Thank you for voicing your concern through this petition.

Your support and reports will help us conserve and protect the environment.”

The minister further noted that the petition had been taken very seriously, and an investigation on the matter was underway.

“If the resort carries out any prohibited acts, regardless of whether it is violence or negligence towards the dolphins, we will take firm action,” she emphasized.

In addition, Nurbaya admitted that the petition had promoted the dolphin show extensively, due to which a public discussion on the subject was needed with the involvement of numerous parties.

All the new students of junior, high school and vocational school in Bali started their new 2015/2016 academic year by attending the student orientation term (MOS) at school.

Student orientation without hazing DENPASAR - All the new students of junior, high school and vocational school in Bali started their new 2015/2016 academic year by attending the student orientation term (MOS) at school.

According to the instruction of the Denpasar Education Agency, the student orientation in Denpasar takes place for four days starting on Monday (Jul. 27) to Thursday (Jul. 30).

If in previous years the student orientation implementation was always ‘inserted’ with the practice of hazing, this year the Ministry of Education and Culture has issued a Ministerial Regulation No.55/2014 on New Student Orientation based on the cultivation of character. In essence, any hazing activity is no longer allowed.

Based on the observation of Bali Post, the implementation of student orientation on the first day at a number of schools ran quite smoothly. There are no reports of parents to Denpasar Education Agency or Bali Education Agency complaining about the student orientation implementation.

Some caretakers of intraschool student organization (OSIS) believed to be organizing committee of the orientation ascertained there will be no hazing against their junior classes.

“We are determined to hold the student orientation without hazing. Indeed, through this student orientation, we would like to invite new students to love sanitation and the environment,” said the OSIS Chief of the SMA Saraswati Denpasar high school, Airlangga Kristiawan, when met on the sidelines of the student orientation implementation.

According to Airlangga Kristiawan, his party outlined the major themes

into the tasks to be carried out by new students. One of them is bringing plant fruit in a pot to school. Later on, the plant will be planted at school yard and treated jointly by students. He asserted that the student orientation this year is without the practice of hazing.

“There is no hazing. Instead the student orientation activity is more filled with lectures, such as on the HIV/AIDS, drugs and global warming. In the meantime, to test the mental of students, there are some games in which the punishment will be given by asking them to sing a national song,” he explained.

His party also curbed the long-nailed new students and female students applying thick makeup. “As the punishment for violators, they will be simply told to cut their nails and cleaning up their thick makeup. “For that purpose, the OSIS has prepared nail cutter and facial cleansers. We want them to dress neatly to school,” he said.

Principal of the SMA Saraswati Denpasar high school, Made Budi Adnyana, said that a total of 530 new students taking part in the student orientation. As a teacher, his party claimed to continuously conduct surveillance should there be any OSIS caretakers taking action beyond the orientation provisions launched by the Denpasar

Education Agency.

“Previously, the students entrusted to be the student orientation organizer have been given direction. Essentially, during this orientation the new students will be introduced to school environment. There is no violence and heavy duty. We will continue to monitor and anticipate the occurrence of irregularities,” he said.

The determination to implement a hazing-free student orientation is also expressed by Principal of the SMAN 7 Denpasar high school, Ida Bagus Suyaputra. According to him, his party has designed the student orientation in accordance with the directives of the Minister of Education and Culture that essentially does not allow any violence or burdensome tasks to new students.

To broaden new students’ horizons in the field of tourism, they are required to upload pictures of tourist attractions in Bali to Instagram account with hastag (#) Mosdenpasar.

This creativity is appreciated in particular by the Mayor of Denpasar, Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra, through his Facebook account. “We will monitor the implementation of the student orientation extra tightly until the last day to avoid any burdensome and harmful things to new students both physically and mentally,” he said. BANGLI - Rabies case does not only kill one of the residents of Antugan hamlet, Jehem village, Tembuku, I Nengah Merta, 32, a few months ago. However, this case also claimed a casualty of a young man at Buayang hamlet, Landih village, Bangli subdistrict, I Nyoman Kartawan, 23, Monday (Jul. 27). More seriously, the casualty happened due to empty stock of the anti-rabies vaccines (VAR).

The victim’s father, I Nengah Geban, claimed not to believe in the incident claiming his youngest son. Associated with the chronology, he stated that on June 21 the victim worked at the house of his neighbor, I Nyoman Kari. At his workplace, there is a puppy of a few months old. In daily life, the puppy behaves tame, so that the victim invited it to play with him.

But unexpectedly, the dog suddenly bit the pinkie of his left hand.

Immediately the victim was rushed to Bangli Hospital. Unfortunately, at that time the victim just got antibiotics considering the anti-rabies vaccine (VAR) was out of stock.

After getting medical treatment, the victim returned home.

“The dog biting is just a few months old. It only caused a little bite wound. Besides, I have also taken him to hospital. However, we are only given antibiotics because there was no anti-rabies vaccine,” he said sadly.

Geban added that a month later after the bite case occurred, Saturday (Jul. 25), the victim was taken again to Bangli Hospital as he complained about numbness in his left arm. At that time, the hospital immediately provided him with the first anti-rabies vaccine. The hope to see the condition of his son to be getting better must even be paid by panic. It happened because on Sunday (Jul. 26) around two o’clock in the afternoon the victim was taken again to Bangli Hospital because of vomiting and shortness of breath. Seeing the emergency condition, the Bangli Hospital directly referred the victim to Sanglah Hospital for further treatment and last Monday around 9:35 a.m. the victim died.

“My son has been taken to Sanglah Hospital. Before he died, his condition already dropped but continued to be getting better. He was able to talk to family.

Yesterday morning, his condition dropped again and finally died,” he said. Related to funeral, Geban

mentioned that it has not been determined yet because his party should consult to customary authorities.

In the meantime, the Head of the Bangli Health Agency, I Nengah Nadi, accompanied by the Head of Bangli Livestock and Fisheries Agency, I Wayan Sukartana, justified the chronological event of the bite case.

He also admitted that when the victim was bitten by a puppy, the anti-rabies vaccine stock was empty. Nevertheless, before the victim died, his party has made a preventive effort by asking the victim to observe the dog and immediately report it to the Livestock and Fisheries Agency in order to search for the dog brain sample and then examined it to laboratory to make diagnosis. On June 22, 2015, the Agency instructed the puppy owner to tie it because the next day will be made a sampling and elimination. Similarly, the emergency vaccination was also carried out at Buayang hamlet.

At the time of elimination, the puppy was not found at the home of the owner. At that time, the victim was asked to take a recommendation at the Livestock and Fisheries Agency and Bangli Hospital to get anti-rabies vaccine in Denpasar. However, the victim did not come. “We have already asked the victim to take the recommendation in order to get antirabies vaccine in Denpasar, but he did not come,” he explained.

On June 25, 2015, the victim was contacted again via telephone to take recommendation letter in order to get anti-rabies vaccine in Denpasar. But the victim did not come, either. “We’ve done several attempts to resolve this case. We contacted the victim to get the vaccine but did not come. And the latest information we received mentioned if the victim died and was suspected to have encephalitis diagnosis of rabies,” said Nadi.

In the meantime, to anticipate the recurrence of similar case, Nadi mentioned that his party will intensify dog elimination and vaccination becoming the target other than making a sweeping to residents having been bitten by dog since the past two months and have not got any anti-rabies vaccine. “We will be sweeping and the dissemination will continue to be intensified,” he concluded. Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Ed Sheeran to star in TV medieval epic

NEW YORK - British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran, whose music career has been soaring, will play a recurring role in a television epic about a medieval warrior, a report said Monday.

Sheeran, who was the most popular artist globally last year on streaming service Spotify, will appear on “The Bastard Executioner” series on the FX network, The Hollywood Reporter said.

The series, which is being filmed in Wales, follows a 14th century warrior who becomes a traveling executioner at the behest of a divine messenger.

The ginger-bearded 24-year-old will play Sir Cormac, “an ambitious and deadly protege of a high-ranking church elder,” the Hollywood trade publication said.

The series, expected to launch later this year, is being directed by Kurt Sutter who was behind “Sons of Anarchy,” a crime drama about a California motorcycle gang.

Sheeran was a professed fan of “Sons of Anarchy” and performed a song for one of its final episodes.

Sheeran is nominated for the top prize at the upcoming MTV Video Music Awards for “Thinking Out Loud,” in which he performs as a ballroom dancer.
