LOS ANGELES - The U.S. premiere of superhero movie “Wonder Woman” went ahead with extra security in Los Angeles, including bomb sniffer dogs and a heightened police presence on the red carpet, after the cancellation of the film’s London event after this week’s British suicide bombing. Media and fans underwent extra bag checks for the open air red carpet at Hollywood’s Pantages Theatre on Thursday, where the cast spoke of their regret at the Manchester pop concert bombing that killed 22 people. Britain raised its terror alert to critical and movie studio Warner Bros. said on Wednesday it had decided to cancel its May 31 premiere in London for “Wonder Woman.” Israeli actress Gal Gadot, who plays the comic book superheroine, told reporters she was “familiar, unfortunately, with these types of events.” “I think it was a good idea not to do the premiere in London... As an Israeli, I can tell you we always say we need to celebrate life and life is stronger than anything and now we’re trying to celebrate life, right? So it’s

mixed feelings but the show must go on, I guess.” Director Patty Jenkins said she was not concerned about canceling the film’s London premiere. “All of our eyes on the UK right now and we’re heartbroken. It’s not the time to celebrate anything and I’m only happy that we really did make a movie about love and trying to be better people. “That’s the message that needs to be out in the world right now but it’s not a time to celebrate anything else,” Jenkins said. The film, the first live action feature film built around the 1941 DC comic book character, also stars Chris Pine and Robin Wright. It starts its rollout in movie theaters worldwide on May 30. (rtr)

CANNES - Roman Polanski, whose 1960s films “Repulsion” and “Rosemary’s Baby” focused on women in mental torment, returns to the same theme in a film that screened at Cannes on Saturday to mixed reviews. “Based on a True Story” stars Polanski’s wife Emmanuelle Seigner as Delphine, a successful author who makes friends with an overly-keen fan Elle, played by Eva Green, in a relationship that quickly takes on elements of “Single White Female”. The French-Polish Polanski is still unable to make films in the United States since fleeing the

country in 1978 due to fears that a plea bargain with prosecutors over his sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl would be overruled. But he has continued to have a successful career and remains active at 83, securing a premiere for “Based on a True Story” in an outof-competition slot at Cannes. “I have never made a film where there are two principal female characters – it’s always a man and a woman, or two men,” Polanski told a news conference of his Frenchlanguage movie. “Here two women oppose each other. It’s fascinating. There are

elements that I dealt with in my first films and I was interested to come back to that type of cinema.” Polanski cast Eva Green - who is French but made her career in English-speaking movies, including in the 2006 James Bond film “Casino Royal” - as a character who switches from best friend to violent stalker and back and could ultimately be a figment of Delphine’s imagination. “You are always asking, does she exist? Australia’s most notorious drug smuggler returns from Bali DENPASAR - The release of the queen of marijuana, Schapelle Leigh Corby, on Saturday evening (May 27) got tight security from police officers led by Chief of Denpasar Police, Hadi Purnomo. All the media crew having been waiting from the morning at the Corrections located on Jalan Ken Arok, Denpasar, were asked to leave by West Denpasar Police Chief, Gede Sumena. Inevitably, local and foreign media protested over the police attitude. However, under the pretext of security reasons, police still asked dozens of media out of the way. Around 17:37, the convicted of 4.2 kg marijuana case came with an escort by Tambora armored personnel carrier (APC). Corby who was in the rear of the sophisticated car was seen riding the black Kijang Innova van with license plate of DK 1988 KX. Media crew could not get closer and it was even harder to take a picture because the escort was quite tight. “Please be outside, her security is my responsibility,” asked Chief of West Denpasar, Gede Sumena.

Inevitably, due to tight security carried out, Jalan Ken Arok, Denpasar, was forced to be closed. Then, it was reopened at 18:00. In the meantime, Head of the Corrections, Bali Law and Human Rights Agency, Surung Pasaribu, said that as of May 27 the convicted case of 4.2 kg marijuana is free. “Today Corby is free,” said Surung Pasaribu. Meanwhile, the Bali Law and Human Right Agency before releasing Corby from the corrections declared that in the context it only does guidance for Corby in the Supreme Court who was sentenced to 20 years in prison. The letter signed by Tutiek Sudaryatmi stated that the correction describes that Schapelle Leigh Corby with registration No.03/PB/II/2014 declares that Corby’s guidance expires on May 27. Increasing number of teenagers are smoking

DENPASAR - The number of smokers continues to increase. Basic Health Research data for 2013 shows that 36.3 percent of teenagers aged 15 and older are smoking. Male teenagers account for 66 percent of this figure while female teenagers account for 6.7 percent. This makes Indonesia the third largest tobacco-consuming country in the world after China and America. During World

No Tobacco Day (HTTS) 2017 that was held at the Catur Muka intersection in Denpasar on Saturday (May 27), more figures where made public. The Global Youth Tobacco Survey Indonesia (2014) conducted by the Health Research and Development Agency (Litbangkes) indicates that 36.2 percent of male teenager aged 15-18 are smokers, while female smoker account for 4.3 percent, for a combined 20.3 percent of teenagers aged 15-18 who smoke.

The increasing number of smokers is made up of youth. “Previously, youth typically started smoking in High School but now we are seeing more and more Junior High students starting to smoke”, said Made Kerta Duana, Chairman of the Indonesia Association of Public Health Experts’ Bali Chapter. The main factors that account for this this phenomenon, he said are; role model who smoke, peer pressure and ease of access to cigarettes No Tobacco Day is used by community health activists and students from Udayana University’s public health students. “We are very concerned about the current situation, as so many people are smoking – especially the youth”, he said. The idea is to inspire different parties to come up with strategic policies to control the hazard of cigarettes. For example, the district and municipal governments in Bali have regional bylaw (Perda) on the smoke-free areas so they are expected to enforce related practices. Outdorr cigarette advertisements were also put on the hot seat. “Such ads represent another risk factor that encourages smoking in young teenagers” he said. Making such advertisements illegal is another strategic effort that the district and municipal government could apply to help prevent young people from starting smoking. Duana emphasized that the role of government is important when it comes to preventing young people from becoming addicted to cigarettes. Despite the ongoing struggle to reduce the minimize the number of young people who start smoking, no bills have been drafted yet. “The House of Representatives still insists on discussing the matter, even though many elements of society are quite clear on the matter”, he said. Duana also said that he hopes that the central government will soon ratify the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). “Until now, we have not seen any strategic policies at the national level regarding the control of cigarettes. For example, the price of cigarettes is still cheap, health warning images on cigarette packaging still only covers less than 40 percent of the total surface not to mention the fact that cigarettes are freely sold everywhere and cigarette advertising is still very prevalent” he explained. Processed snakefruit products penetrate modern market AMLAPURA - A number of artisans in Karangasem have managed to make various types of processed products with basic ingredients of snakefruit. After a long struggle, the processed products made by some women farmer groups (KWT) have even been able to penetrate modern stores or modern markets in Denpasar and surrounding areas. Abundant production of snakefruit is processed into various types of snacks ranging from candy, chips, toffee, hopia to chocolatesnakefruit toffee. These various snacks certainly have a distinctive taste. On the one hand, the distinctiveness of flavor makes a number of products sell well in the market,

but on the other hand, there are products remaining to need a touch of technology. In terms of packaging, on average they are quite interesting so that they deserve to be one of the typical souvenirs of Karangasem. “Toffee is somewhat less demanding. People commonly know if toffee is sweet, but the snakefruit toffee still has a little sour flavor,” said Ni Wayan Murdani, 38, group leader of the KWT Putri Mandiri of Juwuk Legi hamlet, East Duda, Selat, on the sidelines of the healthy life community movement campaign (Germas) at Tanah Aron Square, Amlapura, on Friday (May 26). The hard work of the artisans in anticipating the abundance of snakefruit production has even received appreciation from central government. Pica Antara is a pioneer in the field of snakefruit processed products with I Komang Cenik, 42, the husband of Ni Wayan Murdani. Interestingly, although faced with competition, Murdani and Pica Antara always coordinate and work together both in the matter of product type and selling price determination. In

the meantime, the snakefruit processed into snack product is just the ordinary snakefruit, not sugar snakefruit. The artisans of snakefruit product usually do the process during harvest season because at that time the price of snakefruit is relatively cheap. While beyond the season as it is today, they just focus on marketing. “Indeed, we make this processed product to get around when the price of snakefruit drops. Aside from snakefruit, we also make processed products from other ingredients such as taro and jackfruit. New Cairo museum hopes Tutankhamun’s chariot will be a draw for tourists Some of the world’s oldest relics, including dozens belonging to King Tut, who ruled Egypt more than 3,000 years ago, are being carefully shuttled from the old Egyptian Museum in central Cairo to the vast halls of the new one 23 kilometres away. Egypt is hoping the splashy new museum will be a draw for tourism, a crucial pillar of its economy that has struggled since a 2011 political uprising drove away visitors who once flocked to ancient Pharaonic temples and pyramids.

Transporting the artefacts became an issue of international concern in 2014 after the beard of the ancient Egyptian king’s golden burial mask was accidentally broken off by workers changing the lights in its display case. The workers later tried to crudely reattach the beard with a an epoxy glue compound that damaged the mask, prompting outrage among archaeologists. King Tut ruled Egypt as pharaoh for 10 years until his death at age 19, around 1324 B.C.

Just beyond the Great Pyramids of Giza in the basement of Cairo’s Grand Egyptian Museum, which is set to be the world’s largest archaeological museum when it opens in 2018, Egyptian and Japanese restoration experts unpacked the pharaoh’s treasured artefacts from sealed wooden boxes.

His nearly intact tomb was discovered in the Valley of the Kings in Luxor in 1922 by British archaeologist Howard Carter. The king’s funeral bed is made of wood gilded with gold leaf and decorated with the head of the lioness goddess Sekhmet. Wrapped in foil to preserve its moisture levels, the ancient relic was transported across the city in a pick-up truck flanked by police cars, said Tarek Tawfik, the museum’s general supervisor. “We will transfer over 1,000

objects from the old museum in the next months to be restored and prepared for exhibition,” Egypt’s Antiquities Minister Khaled alAnani told journalists. Tourism has continued to suffer amid a growing number of militant attacks, including two Islamic State church bombings last month. Earlier this month Egypt unearthed an ancient burial site replete with at least 17 mummies, clay sarcophagi, animal coffins, and papyrus inscribed with Demotic script. (rtr)

IN line with its mission to preserve and promote traditional Balinese art in the contemporary context, Museum Puri Lukisan’s “Keliki: Exhibition: Werdi Jana Kerti “ presents an impressive collection of so called miniature drawings and paintings from about 60 different artists all of whom reside in Keliki village. The large number of artists participating in this exhibition in fact only represent a small number of all the artists of Keliki who produce works in this style. The Keliki School of Miniature painting founded in the early 1980’s has played an important role in allowing the art of Keliki village to flourish. Traditional Balinese painting in its purest form was originally intended for religious use, either as illustrations for religious scripts known as lontar or for amulet-like ornaments for shrines and other places. But, over the last century this intricate and specific form of art developed into different styles of painting that allow for more personal freedom of expression and that also serve different functions, including providing for the tourist market. As witnessed in this exhibition however, we can see that despite the influence of the tourism market, the themes depicted in these

art works still retains the religious lore of Bali as a point of reference and prominent theme. Also, the extreme patience, skill and dedication required to produce these mindbogglingly intricate drawings also speaks to the spiritual roots of this artistic style. It is only in the spirit of religious devotion that such intricate and aesthetically balanced artworks could come to light. The works featured in this exhibition are from artists from the Werdi Jana Kerti Artists’ Association who came together a few years ago to help support one and other in maintaining the integrity of this style. As one gazes more and more deeply into the scenes depicted by these dedicated artists, one cannot help but wonder how on earth they managed to squeeze so much beauty into such a small space -much the same way that many visitors to this island feel as they find endless things of beauty to discover in Bali. Recruitment system not ideal yet

DENPASAR — The system changes in high and vocational school (SMA/SMK) student admission occurring continuously is one of the indicators for the absence of recruitment system considered ideal for the new student admissions. “Indeed, each system certainly has good intention, at least according to the agency that designs and implements the system. Yet, the matter of persistent changes without any good dissemination will result in confusions, not praise, due to the new system,” said an educational observer, Dr. I.B. Radendra Suastama. Therefore, the authorities are expected to clearly announce the system through various media, whether print or electronic and online. Although online media has been so massive, it does not necessarily mean that everyone has accessed the online media any time. “Based on the government’s explanation, if the ratio or quota is based on the study on the ideal number of students in a class, it is quite positive. However, if the quotabased consideration can reduce the

capacity of students, it is necessary to re-consider the allowed tolerance in the effort to increase the capacity so that the opportunity to continue the study for our younger generation becomes larger,” he said. He assessed the quota set was indeed based on scientific studies. Nevertheless, the scientificity of the method can sometimes still be debatable and re-verified. In other words, without the intention of denying the results of the study regarding the quota, the greater interest, namely the expansion of school opportunities for children, should be tolerated within certain limits without having to interfere with the effectiveness of teaching and learning process significantly. However, on the other hand, it has been able to overcome the more crucial issues because it concerns the right to learn for the next generation of the nation. “Surely, the quota should never be ignored at all because it is meant to improve the quality of learning so that the limits are still needed. Nevertheless, tolerance should be prioritized,” he hoped. (win)

Since it is determined by family card, prospective students may not choose more than one school on this track. “Its maximum capacity is 10 percent of the school’s quota. If the capacity is not met, it will be transferred to regular track. That is why the students enrolling in local track are also allowed to enroll again in other tracks such as regular track,” he

explained. According to Serinah, enrollment of the local track is opened on June 19-21, 2017. Prospective students wishing to enroll must directly come to the selected school. They are also expected to coordinate in advance with the school and coordinator of school environment. Furthermore, it is resumed with enrolment administrative verification. After that, the school will enroll the prospective students online. “The prospective student will coordinate with the coordinator because it involves hamlet chief and headman. In other words, if it is not included in the local area, it will be rejected by the coordinator,” he explained. In the meantime, the ID number for online enrolment, added Serinah, will use the number of national exam. When there are prospective students trying to commit a fraud or enroll again via local track at other schools, the online system will automatically deny it. COLOMBO - The number of people known to have been killed in floods and landslides in Sri Lanka rose to 122, officials said on Saturday, as the country appealed for international assistance. The state-run disaster management centre said 97 people were still missing after the worst torrential rains since 2003. The Foreign Ministry said that in coordination with the Disaster Management Ministry, an appeal had been made to the United Nations and neighbouring countries to provide assistance “especially in the areas of search and rescue operations”.

India is sending three Navy ships with supplies and other aid, the first of which arrived in Colombo on Saturday. Officials said deaths were reported from the western coastal district of Kalutara, the central southern district of Ratnapura and the southern district of Matara. Sri Lankan military and rescue teams have used boats and helicopters, but officials said access to some areas was very difficult. CARACAS - Courier services have told customers that the Venezuelan customs authority has banned them from importing items such as gas masks, slingshots and bulletproof vests used by some demonstrators in anti-government protests. Other prohibited items include first aid supplies such as burn cream and gauze, according to emailed messages sent to clients this week by the package delivery companies. These goods have been used to treat injured protestors. Courier services sending the advisories included local service Zoom and the Venezuela office of Mail Boxes Etc., known as MBE. Another company, BVA Export, told clients in an email, “It is not allowed to send gas masks and items that can be used for defense and/or attack in the Venezuelan protests.” It included a detailed list of the products that it said had been banned.

There was no immediate response by the companies to requests for comment. Government officials have publicly accused the opposition of using courier services to equip demonstrators in nearly two months of near-daily clashes with security forces. Referring to unidentified courier services, Jose Cabello, head of Venezuela’s tax and customs agency Seniat, said in a statement early this week that, “(The opposition) will not use the ports of our country as a bridge to arm their terrorist groups.” The Seniat and the Information Ministry on Saturday did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the courier services’ notifications of the banned imports. President Nicolas Maduro calls the protests a violent effort to overthrow his government, and he insists the country victim of an “economic war” led by adversaries with the help of

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s military and anti-corruption agency have identified three suspects in a corruption investigation into the controversial purchase of an AgustaWestland helicopter, the military chief said on Friday. General Gatot Nurmantyo said the investigation, in which the police, state auditors and the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) participated, found the deal did not follow proper procedures, causing a loss of 220 billion rupiah ($17 million). Originally meant for the use of Indonesia’s president, the AW101 helicopter looked set to become a white elephant when Joko Widodo in 2015 rejected the $55-million purchase in favour of continuing to use an older helicopter, media have said. The three suspects are all military personnel on active duty, Nurmantyo said, referring to them only by their initials at a joint news conference at the headquarters of the anti-corruption agency. “In the military, corruption is very detrimental to the soldiers because... those who do it are policymakers and they could endanger soldiers

by buying sub-optimal equipment,” Nurmantyo said. Investigators have also frozen the bank account of a domestic company linked to the procurement, holding a balance of 139 billion rupiah ($10.5 million). JAKARTA - Indonesian police arrested three people on Friday suspected of being linked to suicide bombings in Jakarta, as the Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attacks that killed three police officers at a bus station and wounded 12 others. The attack was the deadliest in Indonesia since January 2016, when eight people were killed, four of them attackers, after bombers and gunmen attacked the capital Jakarta. After visiting the site of Wednesday’s attacks, President Joko Widodo said Indonesia needed to accelerate plans to strengthen anti-terrorism laws to prevent new attacks. “If we make a comparison with other countries, they already have regulations to allow authorities to prevent (attacks) before they happen,” Widodo told a news conference. Long-standing plans to reform Indonesia’s 2003 anti-terrorism laws have been held up by opposition from some parties in parliament and concerns about individual rights. The revisions would broaden the definition of terrorism and give police the power to detain suspects without trial for longer. Police have identified the suspected suicide bombers as two 30-year-old men from the West Java city of Bandung. Indonesian police made three arrests on Friday in Bandung related to the attacks and said they had seized Islamic teachings, phones and other items during the raids, Yusri Yunus, head of public relations at West Java Police, said. Hakuho caps 38th title with perfect record at summer sumo

TOKYO — Grand champion Hakuho celebrated his 38th Emperor’s Cup with a win over Mongolian compatriot Harumafuji on Sunday to finish the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament undefeated. Hakuho forced out Harumafuji (11-4) in the day’s final bout at Ryogoku Kokugikan to improve to 15-0 a day after securing his first title in a year with a win over ozeki Terunofuji. Hakuho won the summer tourney last year but has struggled with foot and thigh injuries since then and missed much of the March tournament due to injury. Hakuho won his 33rd title in 2015 to break Taiho’s record for the most Emperor’s Cups in the history of sumo. The 32-year-old Mongolian has said he would like to win 40 championships. (ap)

“There is no sadness at all, just happiness,” Luis Enrique said. “I’m the one who decided to stop, and I think that it was a wonderful decision for me, for the players and for the team as well. The intensity of this profession demands maximum dedication every single day and there is a natural wear out.” He said players always need new challenges and will benefit from a change in leadership, and the club will certainly keep winning despite his departure. He said he was “proud” to have helped Barcelona fans celebrate so many accomplishments during his time at the helm. “If someone had told me when I arrived that I would have the opportunity to help my team win nine titles out of 13 that we played, I’d say that these would be good numbers,” he said. “It would have been nice to have won La Liga and contended for the Champions League title this season, but it just wasn’t meant to be. I believe that the fans recognized the effort and the sacrifice of all the players throughout the season. I have enjoyed the opportunity to make them happy.” Luis Enrique said he was also lucky to have had the chance to coach a player like Lionel Messi. “He is extraordinary, extraterrestrial,” Luis Enrique said about the Argentina forward, who scored the team’s first goal on Saturday. “I’ve had the opportunity to enjoy Messi at his best, performing at the highest level. Barcelona is expected to announce this week that its new coach will be Ernesto Valverde, who left Athletic Bilbao a few days ago. Luis Enrique’s future remains up in the air. “I don’t know what I’ll be doing, really. PARIS — Wrapping up a season during which it failed to achieve its two major goals, it was fitting that Paris Saint-Germain won the French Cup thanks to an own goal in added time. PSG, which relinquished its league title to Monaco and was eliminated from the Champions League in the last 16, ended a mediocre campaign on a high note by winning the cup with a scrappy 1-0 win over Angers on Saturday. PSG dominated but needed an own goal from Angers right back Issa Cissokho to prevail at the Stade de France. PSG claimed its 11th French Cup, its third in a row, to surpass Marseille as the club with the most cups. As the 100th final entered added time, Cissokho looked hampered by Blaise Matuidi’s pressing at the near post and headed the ball into his own net with the back of his head from a corner hit by Angel Di Maria. PSG finished the season with two trophies, having already won the League Cup in coach Unai Emery’s first season in charge. “We learned from everything, and we will learn from that season which was a bit difficult,” PSG defender Serge Aurier said. Amid rumors in the French press he could be replaced during the summer, Emery said he intends to fulfil the final year on his contract. “I am happy here. This team can grow,” Emery said. Angers, which played in its first final in 60 years, failed in its bid to win a first major trophy. With PSG already qualified for next season’s Champions League, the remaining Europa League went to Bordeaux, which finished sixth in the French league. PSG monopolized the ball from the start but Angers goalkeeper Alexandre Letellier ensured his side stayed in the contest with decisive saves. Letellier pushed away a dangerous cross from Serge Aurier, then saved a flick from Matuidi from close range, and stopped a header from Edinson Cavani. After Di Maria set up Cavani with a through ball in the back of the defense, Letellier dived to block the striker’s shot. LONDON — Removing the record seventh FA Cup winner’s medal from his pocket, Arsene Wenger was gratified and yet apprehensive. “For once I have kept my medal,” said the Arsenal manager, who usually gives them away to staff members. “So that means it’s a special night for me.” And maybe his last night managing an Arsenal team. Even after beating Chelsea 2-1 in the final on Saturday, Wenger indicated he has to stew until Tuesday’s board meeting before discovering whether his 21-year reign will be extended by the record 13-time FA Cup winners.
