Taylor Swift drops peppy song and pastel-drenched video NEW YORK - After a bout of social media teasing pop star Taylor Swift made good on a vow to drop new music, releasing early Friday the rainbow-colored video for her latest single, “ME!” The chipper track the 29-yearold superstar says celebrates individuality is a sharp departure from her previous album and much harsher lead single and video for “Look What You Made Me Do,” which went heavy on black and white and saw her grapple with her very public celebrity dramas. “’Me!’ is a song about embracing your individuality and really celebrating it and owning it,” Swift told ABC late Thursday, where she made a brief appearance at the National Football League draft.

guments with a love interest, played by the singer Brendon Urie of Vegas rock band Panic! at the Disco, who also contributes vocals.

After an opening argument that sees the pair fight in French, she begins singing: “I know that I’m a handful, baby, uh/I know I never think before I jump,” before breaking into the self-love chorus: “Me-e-e, ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh/I’m the only one of me.”

In the video featuring cats and a heavy dose of unicorn imagery, Swift memorably shouts out “Spelling is fun!” midway through but proceeds to spell nothing.

Swift has seen a decline in her status in the industry -- scoring just one nomination at this year’s Grammys, where pop was largely ignored in favor of hip hop and countrytinged work -- but commercially remains a megastar.

Her last international tour reportedly grossed $345.7 million over seven months, after which she released a concert film on Netflix.

She has not yet revealed details of a new album but will appear in a film adaptation of “Cats,” set for a December release. (afp)

‘Avengers: Endgame’ breaks India booking records

MUMBAI - The latest Marvel movie “Avengers: Endgame” has smashed Indian box office records for a foreign film ahead of its Friday release by selling more than 2.5 million advance tickets, the country’s main ticket trader said.

Demand for the 22nd film in the Marvel series has been so high that some cinemas are planning round the clock screenings, said Ashish Saksena, chief operating officer of BookMyShow, an online booking platform which announced the sales figures.

With a ticket sold every 18 seconds, cinemas across the usually Bollywood-mad country “are doing everything possible to match fans’ demand for the film,” Saksena said.

And with one day to go, the film could be on track to break the record set by the 2017 Indian film “Bahubali

2”, which notched up 3.3 million advance sales and went on to become the highest-grossing Indian movie, earning $156 million worldwide.

“Avengers: Endgame” opened in parts of Asia and Europe on Wednesday and releases in India, the United States and Canada on Friday.

The movie is releasing in multiple languages across India including English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu. Trade pundits have said the three-hour epic could become the first billion-dollar opening weekend in history.

The first part of the saga,

“Avengers: Infinity War”, was the previous record holder, with less than two million advanced tickets sold. The previous 21 Marvel films have earned about $19 billion globally.

“Anticipation for Avengers is extremely high and it will record unprecedented numbers in India,” Akshaye Rathi, a Mumbai-based trade analyst told AFP. “Craze for the movie is at par with Baahubali 2 and it will break records set by other Hollywood and Bollywood films by a long mile,” Rathi added. At least 10 dead, thousands displaced after severe Indonesia floods

JAKARTA - At least 10 people are dead and eight are missing after days of heavy rain-triggered floods and landslides on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, authorities said Sunday.

Some 12,000 people have been evacuated while hundreds of buildings, bridges and roads have been damaged by the severe weather which affected nine districts or towns across Bengkulu province, officials said. The waters have receded in some places but officials warned the full extent of the damage was not yet known and some areas were still cut off.

“The impact of this disaster may increase,” national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said, adding that several people were also injured in the flooding.

“Landslides and floods could happen again if rainfall is high,” he said.

A “secondary disaster” in the form of skin diseases and acute respiratory infection due to poor

hygiene and a lack of clean water was possible, he added.

Aerial images showed swollen rivers that had burst their banks and inundated settlements in some parts of the province. Public kitchens and evacuation shelters have been set up to cater to some 13,000 people affected by the flooding, while search and rescue teams try to reach hard-hit areas with rubber boats.

“The distribution of aid has been hampered because road access has been cut off by the floods and landslides,” Nugroho said, adding

excavators were being used to clear debris from roads.

Landslides and floods are common in Indonesia, especially during the monsoon season between October and April, when rains lash the vast Southeast Asian archipelago.

Flooding in parts of the Indonesian capital Jakarta this week killed at least two people and forced more than 2000 to evacuate their homes.

Residents of Bogor, a satellite city of Jakarta, had to contend with some 14 pythons that were set loose from a private property due to the

high waters.

Six of the snakes -- which were as long as four metres -- have been found, but the remaining eight remain on the loose, officials said. If the land is released to another party, it is also the owner’s private right.

According to Agus Aryawan, the issuance of restaurant’s building permit on private property is legitimate because it is in accordance with the provisions and gets support from below in the form of adjacent landowners in the left-right side and front-back side, acknowledged by the hamlet chief, headman and subdistrict head.

“So, the issuance of the building permit has received community’s support, complied with Spatial Planning and has an Environmental Permit. The building permit is issued after going through a process, and it is proposed by the land owner,” he explained.

Even if there is a party intending to free up the land of ex-Sari Club, it will highly depend on the land owner whether he wants to release the land or not.

“As public service provider, we should not treat unfairly and the landowner has the right to use it as long as complying with the prevailing regulations. One of the mandatory conditions for the issuance of the building permit is the clarity on the land status and ownership, so that we administratively and technically have no reason to reject the appeal from the community if the intended conditions are fulfilled. So in principle, we as public service providers in the licensing field respect to individual’s civil rights and the process according to procedures,” he concluded. (kmb27)

Restaurant construction on land of ex-Sari Club draws polemic

Parwata: Don’t let it worsen Bali-Australia relations

MANGUPURA — The construction of a restaurant business on the former Sari Club’s land on Jalan Legian, Kuta, received attention from Chairman of the Badung House of Representatives, Putu Parwata, as the business development drew protests from the Prime Minister of Australia because it is related to the history of the 2002 Bali Bombing.

“Protests from Australia happen because it is a historic place for many Australians that died so it needs to be discussed. Stakeholders must communicate, so that this does not worsen the relationship between Bali, especially Badung and Australia,” said Parwata, on Saturday (Apr. 27).

This politician from Dalung, North Kuta, did not blame on the Investment and Integrated Service Office (DPMPTSP) for issuing building permit because the area is included in trade and service zoning, so the local government cannot ban.

“Basically, the licensing refers to the regional regulation stating the area belongs to a trade and service area. Since until now it has not been revoked from the zoning

of trade and services, the licensors inevitably issue the permits,” he explained.

Nevertheless, he hoped there would be the best solution in overcoming the problem. On that account, Putu Parwata suggested that the governor, regent and chairperson of the House of Representatives to conduct diplomacy with the Australian side.

“We do not want to clash because it will be detrimental to tourism itself. In this case, both the regent, the chairman of the House and the governor must conduct diplomacy. This is my suggestion so as not to cause polemic,” he said.

This Secretary of the PDIP Badung considered the polemic of restaurant development is risky if all parties involved jointly implement their authority. Moreover, it can certainly have an impact on the Bali tourism sector, especially Badung. ”This will have an impact on tourism, so there needs to do diplomacy.

The Australian, Bali and Badung parties must sit together, so that there is an agreement that does not harm the parties. There must be a win-win solution,” he concluded. (kmb27)

Batur Organic Park, pioneered by a farmer named I Wayan Badan, has an area of around 0.53 hectare.

Uniquely, at the location you can also find worm cultivation all this time used to help plant’s fertility and ingredient to make juice and worm capsule. In addition to using organic fertilizers, the concept of agriculture is carried out in an integrated manner.

Badan said that he began implementing organic farming techniques since 1998. Formerly, the location of Batur Organic Park was a barren land that could not be planted at all. “It used to be 30 meters deep in sand. Planting mango is difficult,” he said recently. With

organic farming techniques, he slowly began juggling arid land to be green and suitable for planting various types of plants.

Batur Organic Park itself has just been opened or launched in mid-April recently. However, since 2010, there have been many visitors coming to the location to study. Aside from local farmers, visitors coming to the park all this time are from government officials, students and academicians.

The visiting guests are not only from Bali but also from outside Bali such as Bandung, Kalimantan to Papua.

At Batur Organic Park, Badan said that visiting guests usually learn firsthand about the application of organic farming techniques which 90 percent use liquid and solid organic fertilizers. In addition,

visitors also learn to make organic pesticides and fungicides made from natural ingredients such as spices, leaves and cow urine.

Then what are the advantages of organic agriculture? Badan explained that it is very good for long-term sustainability of agricultural patterns. The fruits produced are also of high quality and safe for consumption. “Farmers can also have cost efficiency. And there are many other benefits,” he explained.

Visitors are not charge admission ticket except donations. He said the opening of Batur Organic Park is meant the effective pattern of organic farming can be applied by all farmers in the future. “I want to share techniques for effective farming patterns, so that in the future many farmers will succeed,” said Badan. SEMARAPURA - In a series of Puputan Klungkung Day, the anniversary of Semarapura town and the 4th Semarapura Festival this year, the local government inserted activities that encourage the inculcation of young generation’s character.

One of them is through cultural camp. This agenda is meant to strengthen the diversity of young generation and consolidate the character of the nation’s children, so that it becomes a young generation having independent, skilled and unyielding spirit.

This cultural camp was centered at Swecapura Stadium on Friday (Apr. 26). Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Ni Made Ardia Pramesti Cahyani, said the cultural camp took the theme ‘Dharmaning Ksatrya Mahottama’ that can be used by the younger generation to support the development movement in Klungkung. The cultural

camp on April 26-28 coincided with the commemoration of the peak of Puputan Klungkung.

Participants of the cultural camp came from 10 high schools and vocational schools throughout Klungkung district, namely the SMAN 1 Semarapura high school, SMAN 2 Semarapura, SMAN 1 Banjarangkan, PGRI Tourism Vocational School, Yaparindo Tourism Vocational School, SMAN 1 Nusa Penida, SMKN 1 Nusa Penida, SMA Satap Nusa Lembongan and Panca Atma Jaya Health Vocational School. The total participants reached 52 people consisting of 26 male students and 26 female students.

Regent of Klungkung, I Nyoman Suwirta, when visiting the camp participants said the cultural camp can strengthen diversity of young generation. At the same time, it can strengthen the character of younger generation, so that it becomes a

But the programme to connect millions of homes to gas, empower women and cut pollution -- designed as a key vote-winning policy for Modi -- has been beset by allegations of corruption and misuse.

Devi says she had to pay 3,000 rupees ($43) for the “free” kit -the equivalent of a month’s wages for most people in her village Nisarpura, in India’s poorest state, Bihar.

“I pleaded with the officials that this is supposed to be free but they gave me two options: Pay and take the kit or forget it,” Devi said, rolling out bread to be cooked on the stove.

Critics say the programme has been marred by bribes and corruption and that the poor households targeted by the scheme cannot afford to pay for gas refills, pushing those who have received new stoves back to traditional fuels.

But the prime minister, seeking a second term in India’s marathon national election, has touted the cooking gas scheme a success as he campaigns around the country.

Batting away criticism, Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government says more than 70 million poor households across India now have gas stoves.

- Unfinished meal -

Modi launched his “Ujjwala Yojana” (“bright scheme”) in May 2016, and is aiming to connect 80 million rural households to gas by 2022.

Household pollution is a serious health hazard in India, with a World Health Organization (WHO) report saying that smoke inhaled by women from unclean fuel is a major cause of cancer, heart disease and strokes.

In a bid to move India towards clean energy, the scheme offers recipients a loan of 1,600 rupees ($23) that covers the cost of the stove, connection pipes, regulator and a gas canister.

The loan is supposed to be paid back through the purchase of subsidised gas refills.

In Nisarpura, Jamintra Devi applied for a connection but local officials would not give it unless she paid a bribe.

“We come back from work at midnight or 1:00am and then we have to cook on wood,” said Devi, who is not related to Reena.

Some recipients say their kits have effectively been repossessed.

Shahjahan Khatoon, from an impoverished neighbourhood of the state capital, Patna, enrolled in the scheme in January 2018.

Two months later, officials distributing gas canisters came to her home looking for money.

Reena Devi says her life changed when she got a cooking gas connection under a programme championed by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi. But the “free” kit came at a price.

HUE - Rainbow-coloured hot air balloons ferried giddy visitors over Vietnam’s ancient city of Hue on Sunday for a festival organisers hope will kickstart a passion for flying in the tourist hotspot.

Several balloons -- including one shaped as an octopus, another as a heart -- offered aerial views of the former capital’s sprawling stone citadel, which was once the seat of Vietnam’s emperors. It is not a journey for the faint of heart.

“When the balloon started to go up, I was buzzing and I could see the full view of Hue,” tourist Ha Anh Ngoc told AFP. Hue is one of Vietnam’s most

popular tourist destinations, attracting some 4.3 million visitors last year.

Most visitors travel by foot or cycle rickshaw to see the city’s ancient pagodas, imperial tombs and citadel, which still bears damage from intense fighting during the Vietnam War. Balloon enthusiasts are hoping to change that.

“I really hope hot air ballooning will be more popular and closer to Vietnamese people,” said Vo Ngoc Ha, one of the organisers of the third annual festival.

At $280 for a 40-minute jaunt into the skies, hot air balloon rides

remain out of reach for most.

Some visitors at Sunday’s festival opted instead for a tethered ride for about $6, while others enjoyed the event from the ground, snapping selfies as the balloons soared over the city.

Dutch pilot Wout Bakker, who has come to the festival every year since it was first held in 2017, said he has seen a gradual uptick in interest in hot air ballooning which he hopes will grow further.

“Vietnam has good potential because more and more tourists are coming and also local people -they have money to take flights, so it is building up,” he said. (afp)

And that sunnier picture has helped bolster confidence in the stock market — driving the benchmark S&P 500 index to another record high Friday.

The U.S. economy shook off fears of a sharp slowdown in the first quarter of the year and grew at a solid pace, suggesting the nearly decade-long expansion still has a ways to go.

Share prices, though, began to rebound in January, after the Fed signaled that it had put any further rate increases on hold, likely for the rest of the year. That emboldened investors, who have become increasingly confident that the economy will avoid the worst-case scenario of a recession.

After falling nearly 20% at the end of last year, the S&P 500 has now recouped all its losses since late September. Though few Americans have substantial stock holdings, rising share prices can help boost consumer confidence.

Economists cautioned that first quarter growth was driven mostly by several temporary factors that should reverse themselves in coming months. Retailers and other companies, for example, sharply increased the stockpiles of goods in their warehouses and on store shelves. Those additions added nearly 0.7 percentage point to the quarter’s growth figure. And the trade deficit narrowed sharply,

adding an additional percentage point.

“We know this is not going to be sustainable,” said Joe Brusuelas, chief economist at RSM, a tax consulting firm.

Businesses won’t likely order as many new goods as they wait for consumer spending to reduce their stockpiles. That will probably restrain growth. And the improvement in the trade deficit last quarter occurred partly because imports fell sharply after many companies ramped up their buying from China last year in advance of potential tariff increases the Trump administration had scheduled for Jan. 1.

The White House ended up delaying those tariffs. As imports return to normal, the trade deficit will likely widen again.

Exports also rose in the JanuaryMarch period, with China stepping up its purchases of U.S. goods, which some economists attributed to a temporary goodwill gesture

by Beijing amid high-stakes trade

talks between the two countries.

Those negotiations are ongoing.

State and local government spending also rose last quarter, mostly to build more highways, which added 0.4 percentage point to growth and may also prove short-lived.

“Taking out the over-sized boosts from net trade, inventories and highways investment, which will all be reversed in the coming quarters, growth was only around 1%,” said Paul Ashworth, an economist at Capital Economics. “Under those circumstances, we continue to expect that GDP growth will slow this year.”

Larry Kudlow, head of President Donald Trump’s National Economic Council, said the administration is sticking by its estimate that growth will top 3% for all of 2019.

He argued that low unemployment and solid wage gains will lift consumer spending, thereby boosting auto and home sales.

“I think the prosperity cycle is

intact,” Kudlow told CNBC. “I think the Trump policies are working to rebuild America.”

Whether the stock market can continue to march ahead — without additional evidence of corporate or economic strength — is far from clear.

“It’s important to note investors already knew the U.S. economy was the strongest in the world,” said Alec Young, managing director of global markets research at FTSE Russell.

Companies are in the midst of reporting how much profit they made in the first three months of 2019, and investors aren’t expecting much. Analysts are forecasting the first drop in earnings for S&P 500 companies since the spring 2016.

But many companies have so far reported results that were better than Wall Street expected. That’s crucial because stock prices tend to track profit growth over the long term. (ap)

The latest dose of encouragement came in a report Friday that the U.S. economy grew much faster than expected in the January-March quarter, suggesting that the nearly decade-long expansion still has a ways to go.

Other recent signs have fed a growing view among many analysts that the economy faces little risk of slipping into a recession anytime soon as some had feared when the year began. Retail sales jumped in March. And with hiring solid and wages rising at a decent pace, consumer spending will likely strengthen in the coming months.

In Friday’s report, the government said the economy grew at a 3.2% annual rate in the first quarter.

That’s much better than the 1% or below rate that was forecast in the early weeks of 2019.

Though the economy is widely expected to slow in the current quarter to a roughly 2% rate or less, such a pace would still produce annual growth for the first half of the year of roughly 2.5%. That would be a solid gain. And it would be in line with the modest but steady growth that has prevailed for most of the expansion.

It’s also a far brighter scenario than the one envisioned late last year and early this year. A 35-day partial shutdown of the government remained in effect through most of January. Global growth was sputtering in the midst of the U.S.-China trade war. Stocks plummeted in December as the Federal Reserve raised short-term interest rates for the eighth time in nine quarters and signaled that further tightening was likely. Mortgage rates rose, discouraging many would-be home buyers.

American households also cut back: Retailers’ sales were weak in January and February, adding to the bleak outlook.

SEMARAPURA - Peak of the temple festival or piodalan at Batu Medawu Temple, Nusa Penida, took place on January 30. After holding the bhakti penganyar, the series of the temple festival was closed on Saturday (Feb. 2). There is an interesting myth about the establishment of the temple belonging to the sad kahyangan in Klungkung which is related to the failure of Dukuh Jumpungan against Batara Toh Langkir, the ruler of mainland Bali.

Chairperson of the Ritual Committee, Putu Sujana, stated the piodalan in the sad kahyangan temple falls every six months and coincides with the Buda Kliwon Pahang. Local Hindus seemed enthusiastic about making prayers. Moreover, the Regent of Klungkung, Nyoman Suwirta, and his wife also came to say prayers in order that nature and its contents will always be calm and peaceful, in the midst of the current situation increasingly familiar with natural disasters.

This temple has the concept of nyegara gunung or sea-mountainward where there is a combination of land and sea in one form of beauty. At the Batu Medawu Temple, all the pilgrims performed prayers for three times, namely at the Segara, Taman and Penataran Temple.

This temple is supported by half the customary villagers, starting from the customary village of Kutampi Atas to the south and the east.

In addition to the pilgrims coming from their own local community, the festival at the Batu Medawu Temple is also often attended by people from the Island of Bali.

Batu Medawu Temple is located at Suana village, just west of Semaya hamlet. As one of the sad

kahyangan temples in Klungkung, this temple has a long history in its existence in Bali. The local temple priest explained the name Batu Medawu comes from the word perahu medah batu or a boat dividing rocks.

The origin is reinforced by the story of Nusa Penida Chronicle telling about the story of I Renggan, one of the grandchildren of Dukuh Jumpungan who wanted to conquer Bali with his magical boat. In the story, I Renggan is believed to have the capability of making every land passed through by his boat will become an ocean.

“Bathara Toh Langkir knows such desire, so that he made I Renggan unable to control the boat and fall asleep. The boat was stranded in Manggis, Karangasem and crashed into an island there. Finally, the island split and becomes small islands as we see now around Padangbai,” said Jero Mangku.

The priest added that due to his failure, he tried to return to Nusa Penida through the eastern part of the island. When trying to tether the boat, apparently it was not completely under control. Even, it passed to the beach and split the rock mound in the eastern part of the island. In short, the ruin of I Renggan’s boat was made a place of worship currently known as the Batu Medawu Temple.

The story is further strengthened by a symbol in the form of building resembling a boat’s rear part depicting a boat splitting a rock mound. This building can be seen in the Batu Medawu Temple, precisely in the Segara Temple. Batu Medawu Temple serves as a holy place to ask for wisdom, unlike the Dalem Ped functioned to invoke strength. Voting begins in Spain election marked by far-right resurgence

MADRID - Spaniards began voting in an uncertain snap general election Sunday marked by a resurgence of the far-right after more than four decades on the outer margins of politics.

Opinion polls give outgoing socialist premier Pedro Sanchez a win but without the necessary majority to govern alone, meaning he will have to seek alliances in a political environment that has soured since

Catalonia’s failed secession bid.

By far the novelty of these elections is the emergence of far-right party Vox, which burst onto the scene in December regional polls in southern Andalusia and looks set to

make its first-ever entrance into the national parliament.

Polls predict it could take more than 10 percent of the votes in a country that had no far-right party to speak of since the death of dictator Francisco Franco in 1975, in what is likely to cause further concern in Europe.

FERRETTE - In the hilltop town of Ferrette near the border with Switzerland, few would expect to encounter Eritreans exploring the ruins of its medieval chateau or Chechens walking its steep narrow streets.

But this tiny town in eastern France has opened its doors to asylum seekers who now represent some 10 percent of the population.

As campaigning enters the final month before May’s European elections, the migrant question has been a central issue across a continent sharply divided over how to handle the influx of people seeking safety in Europe.

Although the flows have dropped sharply since 2015 when more than a million newcomers arrived, triggering Europe’s worst migration crisis since World War II, thousands more come every week, with nearly 19,000 arrivals since the start of the year.

With Europe’s governments paralysed over what to do and tensions rising on the ground, there has been a surge in support for populist and far-right parties, who have used the opportunity to further anti-immigrant agendas.

But not everywhere, and certainly not in Ferrette where Mayor

Francois Cohendet has overseen a successful integration and says the migrants’ presence there is “not an issue” but just a part of the community’s normal life.

Which might have been quite a challenge in this town of 740 people in the southern part of Alsace, a region where the far-right has gathered a sizeable following.

Since 2016, Ferrette has permanently taken in about 80 asylum seekers -- half of them children -- from places as far-flung as Afghanistan, Sudan and Armenia.

All of them are hoping to be recognised as refugees -- or at the very least, that France will grant them “subsidiary protection”, the status granted to asylum seekers who do not qualify as refugees.

“They told me that Alsace was an area where there was racism but I haven’t felt it,” says a smiling Djoe Kabuka, a Congolese national.

The only thing about Ferrette, he says, is the lack of public transport and the need to travel to Mulhouse, a town 30 kilometres (18 miles) away, to find the sort of foods the refugees are used to.

The other thing is the weather.

“It gets very cold and very hot here,” smiles Abundance, a teen-

ager from Nigeria.

- Initial hostility -

It was only after a squadron of gendarmes was relocated in 2015, leaving their former barracks empty, that regional officials approached the mayor with a request to use the premises as temporary accommodation for asylum seekers.

And when Cohendet accepted, he found himself on the receiving end of some stiff opposition, even from members of his staff.

“The population, which was initially very resistant to the idea, has seen that everything has gone well, that these are discreet people, who keep themselves to themselves and are not aggressive,” he says.

Pulling out a cardboard folder, he pulls out a pile of flyers and pamphlets. Some carry angry slogans like “Not one migrant in Ferrette” or “This is our home” while others use violent language.

The first to arrive were “two Sudanese with black skin, wearing sandals in the snow,” he recalls.

But while some were protesting, he also saw other residents joining together to help, with the emergence of a group called “Neighbours Around the World” that offered them French lessons, access

to a games library, cooking classes and even lifts to the hospital.

Samir Beldi, director of accommodation at the Mulhouse/Ferrette branch of Adoma, the housing authority that lodges migrants, said things had worked out well.

“The volunteers managed to repair the damage after a few initial worries. There were some pre-

Founded by a former member of the conservative Popular Party (PP), with a strong stance against feminism and illegal immigration, Vox has risen thanks to its hard line against separatists in Catalonia.

Since then, the crisis has continued to cast a pall over Spanish politics.

PALEMBANG - Hundreds of homes have been flooded in Musi Banyuasin District, South Sumatra Province, following incessant heavy rains since Saturday.

Flooding affected Dawas and Tanjung Dalam villages in Keluang Sub-district, as well as Jud and Air Balui Villages in Sanga Desa Sub -district, First Inspector Eka Sapta Yanto, head of the Keluang police office, said here on Sunday.

“This is the third flooding that has affected local residents. But, this time, the flood is bigger and surprising because the water flow was strong particularly in Tanjung

Dalam Village,” he said.

Two houses respectively in Dawas and Tanjung Dalam villages were swept away and a road connecting the two villages were cut off by the flooding.

“This is the worst flooding as Biduk River, a tributary of Musi River, has spilled over its bank, besides the precipitation was very high,” he remarked.

The floods did not claim any live but displaced several people. Local

authorities have helped move the flood victims to higher grounds.

Keluang District Head Debby Haryanto said some 200 homes were flooded in Dawas and Tanjung Dalam Villages.

“We have already reported to the district administration and disaster mitigation office. Five teams have been deployed there,” he said.

Major floods were also hit several Indonesian provinces, such as Jakarta and Bengkulu. (ant)

“Waste-to-energy generating plants are being applied in cities allowed to treat waste into energy,” Luhut Pandjaitan said here, Sunday when launching Clean Indonesia Movement.

Jakarta has a waste-to-energy power plant capable of treating 1,500 tons of waste daily.

The Government wants three to four waste-to-energy power plants to treat 8,000 tons of waste produced by Jakarta residents daily.

Similar plants exist in Medan (North Sumatra), Surabaya (East Java), Bali , Bandung (West Java),

Manado (north Sulawesi) and several other cities.

The Government will also develop waste inceminators having minimal C02 in regions producing waste below 150 tons per day.

“Those inceminators will be located far away from settlement areas,” he said.

President Joko Widodo has seen waste as a problem that needs to be handled seriously because it could damage the next generation, according to the minister.

He urged every body to care for and be willing to reduce waste production. He also called for a change of life style to reduce single-use plastic product usage.

“If you go for shopping, don’t use plastic bags. Take your own reusable bags,” he said. (afp)

Nuggets edge Spurs in game seven to reach second round

LOS ANGELES - Nikola Jokic had a triple-double and Jamal Murray tallied 23 points as the Denver Nuggets punched their ticket to the second round of the NBA playoffs with a 90-86 game seven win over San Antonio.

GIANYAR - Yeh Pulu is a place around 2 kms from famous ancient rock carving of Goa Gajah, located around 30 kms east of Denpasar city. The carving is between rice field and ravine of Pekerisan river.

The site was rediscovered in 1925 by the archaeologists covered by moath and shrubs yet local people still knew them and put some offering at the front of the carvings.

In 1949 a simple protection was laid out to avoid water flowing on the surface of the relief. It looks like

panel with the size of 25 x 2 meters full with carvings. The figures showing mixed between the fairy tales of wayang ( puppet show ) and like a common people. If we see the area of Pejeng which is at the same slope of the river and closeby area, it is rich with ancient stone carvings, and also wayang figure is found near the village of Pejeng preserved at a temple called ” Arjuna Metapa “, one of the figure prince of Mahabharata story.

From the site itself it is hard to give estimated date of the construction.

From iconographic study we can only use typological date or comparing it’s work, anatomy, and decoration based on the ancient relief of Candi Penataran in east Java. It is commonly agreed that Penataran temple was constructed during the end of Majapahit kingdom, around 1400 AD. If it is associated with the tradition of Wayang puppet in Bali, it was only around 16th century, when Bali kingdom controlled Blambangan kingdom (now Kabupaten Banyuwangi).

According to the tradition during

the attack of Blambangan, a box full of wayang puppet were confiscated and were brought to the palace in Klungkung and the king was interested by the art of Wayang. In Klungkung today, there is a village called Kamasan near the capital city of the kingdom in the past is the first wayang style introduced by a painter inspired by the wayang figure brought from Java. So it was probable that this rock carving was made around this period.

An important aspect from this

art is that a new style had emerged compared to the previous art which was showing close style with the type of art such as Borobudur and Prambanan temples. It is well understood that the art of Bali during ancient time was very idealistic and superhuman in nature, but Yeh Pulu relief showing realistic and vigorous nature. It is hard to understand why the artist had deviated from the rules at the time. They did not only carved wayang figures but also human figures. (IBP/net)

Popovich didn’t get the foul and the Nuggets were able to run the clock down and hold on for the series clincher.

“He didn’t hear anybody cause he didn’t foul,” said Popovich of LeMarcus Aldridge, who was the closest of the five players to the ball. “I think both teams sent basketball back in the first half. I was surprised people stayed.”

LONDON - Andy Murray has become the first leading player to call on Justin Gimelstob to quit his role on the Association of Tennis Professionals board after the American was sentenced following assault charges. Gimelstob, himself a former professional tennis player, pleaded no contest and was given three years’ probation and 60 hours of community service by a Los Angeles court on Monday.

Despite the verdict, Gimelstob remains on the ATP board, where his allies reportedly include world number one Novak Djokovic, and appears keen to extend his role as a tennis administrator.

But British tennis great Murray,

a three-time Grand Slam champion and double Olympic gold medallist, told the UK’s Sunday Telegraph newspaper: “I don’t see how, with everything that has gone on, how it’s possible for him to remain in a position of authority or management at the ATP right now.”

Gimelstob, 41, was in court on felony battery charges following an incident in October last year that saw him accused of attacking former friend Randall Kaplan while the venture capitalist, his wife and their two-year-old daughter were trick-or-treating on Halloween.

Kaplan had sought a restraining order against Gimelstob following the attack, alleging the former ten-

nis star had struck him more than 50 times while threatening to kill him. Gimelstob was also ordered to undergo 52 weeks of anger management classes.

Following Monday’s verdict, several former players -- including Martina Navratilova and Pat Cash -- have suggested Gimelstob should not continue with his ATP role.

Meanwhile the All England Club, which runs Wimbledon, on Tuesday announced they would ban Gimelstob from attending the Royal Box on Centre Court during this year’s Championships and the invitational doubles tournament in which he had previously taken part. (afp)

MADRID - Barcelona may yet prove they are the best team in Europe but they are indisputably the best in Spain after they wrapped up their fourth La Liga title in five years on Saturday.

Barca are now nine points clear of Atletico Madrid with three games left to play, while Real Madrid look set to finish a second consecutive season trailing the champions by double figures in terms of points.

The failings of Real, who now own the pitiful record of winning the league only once in seven years, are laid bare by the table but a smaller margin flatters Atletico too, masking what has, in truth, been a procession for the best part of four months.

“Our first goal is consistency, being the best every day,” Ernesto Valverde said in September.

At the start of January, Barca’s advantage was five points, February six, March seven and April eight.

Some then hoped there could be a race when they drew 4-4 at Villarreal but a few days later they had beaten Atletico and that was that.

The stuttering form of those beneath them has certainly helped.

Even if Barcelona had collapsed, Real were too far behind to capitalise while Atletico, fragile away from home, have never looked capable of the winning run required.

“For us next year, the league

must be our number one priority,” Real coach Zinedine Zidane said on Wednesday.

But the faults of the Madrid pair belong to them not Barca, who have now been crowned kings of Spain eight times in 11 years, a period of dominance that was started by the historic treble-team of Pep Guardiola, consolidated under Luis Enrique and now elongated by Valverde.

“What we have done over the last years will go down in history,” said Sergio Busquets.

- Valverde ignoring doubters -

Valverde may never convince those who take his pragmatism to be a sign of mediocrity and his veering from the iconic style of Guardiola as contrary to the ideals of Barcelona.

Winning the Champions League would surely appease the doubters, particularly if it amounted to Valverde’s own treble, with a Copa del Rey final against Valencia to come next month in Seville.

“We have to close out the title as soon as possible, without letting go,” Lionel Messi said. “Then we can think about Liverpool and the

semi-finals.”

But the reputation of this Barcelona team, and their coach, is unfairly shaped by what has gone before, not least because most of those players have gone too. Messi, Busquets and Gerard Pique were the only ones present both in 2009 and 2019.

Instead, Valverde adapted, by retaining some of the old, attacking verve while adding athleticism, shape and defensive discipline.

When he arrived, two Super Cup defeats to Madrid prompted Pique to admit Barca felt inferior. Not now.

Madrid, thrashed 5-1, Huesca, hammered 8-2, Sevilla, twice beaten 4-2, Espanyol, Levante and Real Betis, each sent packing 4-0, 5-0 and 4-1 respectively, are all testament to this Barcelona’s exhilarating streak.

Messi’s 34 goals are too. If he can find four more in the three games left, it will be his best La Liga return since his 43 in 2015. His partner, Luis Suarez, has 21 and together, they have scored more than every team in the division except Real Madrid and Sevilla. (afp)

BERLIN - Captain Marco Reus admitted that the Bundesliga title was slipping from Borussia Dortmund’s grasp after he was sent off in a shock 4-2 derby defeat to Schalke on Saturday.

The defeat severely harmed Dortmund’s title hopes, handing Bayern Munich the chance to go four points clear with three games to go when they play Nuremberg on Sunday.

“As long as we are not winning our games, it will be hard to catch Bayern,” said Reus.

Dortmund coach Lucien Favre also said that he had given up hope of catching league leaders Bayern.

“The title race is over,” he said.

“I have never experienced anything like this.”

“It is very, very hard to accept, especially the way we lost today.”

“We are not used to getting red cards, and it was difficult after that.”

Reus’ red card, given for a reckless foul on Schalke’s Suat Serdar, proved a turning point in Saturday’s disastrous defeat, as Daniel Caligiuri put Schalke 3-1 up from the resulting free-kick.

Team mate Marius Wolf was also sent off for a similar challenge on Serdar, but it was an entirely different refereeing decision which caused controversy after the game.

Favre was left furious about a handball decision against Julian Weigl which allowed Schalke to equalise with a penalty after Dort-

mund had taken an early lead.

Favre called the recent adjustments to the handball rule “a disgrace” and “the biggest scandal in football”.

“I was a player for 15 years and have been a coach for a long time,” he said.

“Whoever invented this rule has obviously never played the game.

It has nothing to do with football.”

Favre also said that an incident involving Jadon Sancho had contributed to Schalke’s equaliser.

The English youngster appeared to be hit in the face by an object thrown from the away block as Dortmund celebrated their opener, and briefly left the pitch for treatment.

The Dortmund coach said that Sancho was not back in position by the time Schalke were given the penalty at the other end.

“It is very difficult to accept this defeat. For me, it is clear that the title race is done,” said Favre.

Dortmund’s players director and former captain Sebastian Kehl struck a more positive note.

MANCHESTER - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has declared he will not allow himself to be thrown under the bus by Manchester United’s stars after a warning from his former captain Roy Keane.

Solskjaer’s remarkable early form as United manager, which brought 14 wins from 17 matches, has dropped off alarmingly, with seven defeats in nine games going into Sunday’s Premier League home match against Chelsea.

The latest defeat was at home to neighbours Manchester City on Wednesday, when United legend Keane, working as a television pundit, suggested Solskjaer’s players were letting down their manager in exactly the same way they had his predecessor Jose Mourinho.

In Keane’s words; “these are the players who threw Jose Mourinho under the bus and they’ll do it to Ole”, but Solskjaer is adamant that will not happen.

“That was Roy Keane who said that, wasn’t it? Of course that is not going to happen,” Solskjaer said.

“I speak to the players all the time; they know my expectations and standards. I have got three years here now and I am going to do whatever I can to make this club successful.

“We do that together, it is not like players against managers here.

Supporters know, we know, we are doing this together and working together to improve. We are all in this together.”

Solskjaer signed a three-year contract in March, having made a significant impact after arriving as caretaker manager in December to replace Mourinho.

One of the Norwegian’s great strengths initially was his respect for the culture of the club, having played for them between 1996 and 2007, before managing their reserve team from 2008 to 2011.

PARIS - Kylian Mbappe was sent off for a shocking tackle late in extra time as Paris Saint-Germain were stunned by Rennes in Saturday’s French Cup final, losing 6-5 on penalties after a dramatic game finished 2-2 at the end of extra time.

PSG substitute Christopher Nkunku blazed his sudden-death spot-kick over the bar in the shootout, sparking scenes of joy among the Rennes fans at the Stade de France as they won a first trophy in almost half a century.

“It has been talked about enough at the club in the last few weeks for us to realise that we have achieved something historic,” said Rennes coach Julien Stephan.

It was a remarkable comeback from the Brittany side, who had seen Dani Alves and Neymar give Ligue 1 champions PSG a 2-0 lead midway through the first half.

Thomas Tuchel’s side appeared poised to wrap up a domestic double, but Presnel Kimpembe’s own goal just before the break gave Rennes hope and Edson Mexer headed them level in the 66th minute to take a gripping final -- attended by President Emmanuel Macron -- to extra time.

Penalties were already looming when Mbappe, who endured a

frustrating evening, was shown a straight red card by referee Ruddy Buquet for a dreadful challenge on Damien Da Silva. The France star caught the Rennes defender on the knee with his studs, and can expect a lengthy ban.

“He had a slight muscle injury yesterday, he stopped training early and went to hospital for tests.

Maybe that was in his head,” said Tuchel.

“You got the feeling he was lacking confidence and didn’t feel free. The red card at the end, it’s not him.”

Without him, PSG fell short of winning the Cup for the fifth year running, and of securing the double in Tuchel’s first season in charge, which will also be remembered for the Qatar-owned club’s Champions League exit to Manchester United in the last 16.

Without him, PSG fell short of winning the Cup for the fifth year running, and of securing the double in Tuchel’s first season in charge, which will also be remembered for the Qatar-owned club’s Champions League exit to Manchester United in the last 16.

“I am sad,” said Neymar. “We weren’t quite up to it, but there is no point crying about it now. There is nothing we can do.”

Nuggets edge Spurs in game seven to reach second round

LOS ANGELES - Nikola Jokic had a triple-double and Jamal Murray tallied 23 points as the Denver Nuggets punched their ticket to the second round of the NBA playoffs with a 90-86 game seven win over San Antonio.

GIANYAR - Yeh Pulu is a place around 2 kms from famous ancient rock carving of Goa Gajah, located around 30 kms east of Denpasar city. The carving is between rice field and ravine of Pekerisan river.

From the site itself it is hard to give estimated date of the construction.

From iconographic study we can only use typological date or comparing it’s work, anatomy, and decoration based on the ancient relief of Candi Penataran in east Java. It is commonly agreed that Penataran temple was constructed during the end of Majapahit kingdom, around 1400 AD. If it is associated with the tradition of Wayang puppet in Bali, it was only around 16th century, when Bali kingdom controlled Blambangan kingdom (now Kabupaten Banyuwangi).

According to the tradition during

the attack of Blambangan, a box full of wayang puppet were confiscated and were brought to the palace in Klungkung and the king was interested by the art of Wayang. In Klungkung today, there is a village called Kamasan near the capital city of the kingdom in the past is the first wayang style introduced by a painter inspired by the wayang figure brought from Java. So it was probable that this rock carving was made around this period.

An important aspect from this

art is that a new style had emerged compared to the previous art which was showing close style with the type of art such as Borobudur and Prambanan temples. It is well understood that the art of Bali during ancient time was very idealistic and superhuman in nature, but Yeh Pulu relief showing realistic and vigorous nature. LONDON - Andy Murray has become the first leading player to call on Justin Gimelstob to quit his role on the Association of Tennis Professionals board after the American was sentenced following assault charges. Gimelstob, himself a former professional tennis player, pleaded no contest and was given three years’ probation and 60 hours of community service by a Los Angeles court on Monday.

Despite the verdict, Gimelstob remains on the ATP board, where his allies reportedly include world number one Novak Djokovic, and appears keen to extend his role as a tennis administrator.

But British tennis great Murray,

a three-time Grand Slam champion and double Olympic gold medallist, told the UK’s Sunday Telegraph newspaper: “I don’t see how, with everything that has gone on, how it’s possible for him to remain in a position of authority or management at the ATP right now.”

Gimelstob, 41, was in court on felony battery charges following an incident in October last year that saw him accused of attacking former friend Randall Kaplan while the venture capitalist, his wife and their two-year-old daughter were trick-or-treating on Halloween.

Kaplan had sought a restraining order against Gimelstob following the attack, alleging the former ten-

nis star had struck him more than 50 times while threatening to kill him. Gimelstob was also ordered to undergo 52 weeks of anger management classes.

Following Monday’s verdict, several former players -- including Martina Navratilova and Pat Cash -- have suggested Gimelstob should not continue with his ATP role.

Voting begins in Spain election marked by far-right resurgence

MADRID - Spaniards began voting in an uncertain snap general election Sunday marked by a resurgence of the far-right after more than four decades on the outer margins of politics.

Opinion polls give outgoing socialist premier Pedro Sanchez a win but without the necessary majority to govern alone, meaning he will have to seek alliances in a political environment that has soured since

Catalonia’s failed secession bid.

By far the novelty of these elections is the emergence of far-right party Vox, which burst onto the scene in December regional polls in southern Andalusia and looks set to

make its first-ever entrance into the national parliament.

Polls predict it could take more than 10 percent of the votes in a country that had no far-right party to speak of since the death of dictator Francisco Franco in 1975, in what is likely to cause further concern in Europe.

FERRETTE - In the hilltop town of Ferrette near the border with Switzerland, few would expect to encounter Eritreans exploring the ruins of its medieval chateau or Chechens walking its steep narrow streets.

But this tiny town in eastern France has opened its doors to asylum seekers who now represent some 10 percent of the population.

As campaigning enters the final month before May’s European elections, the migrant question has been a central issue across a continent sharply divided over how to handle the influx of people seeking safety in Europe.

Although the flows have dropped sharply since 2015 when more than a million newcomers arrived, triggering Europe’s worst migration crisis since World War II, thousands more come every week, with nearly 19,000 arrivals since the start of the year.

With Europe’s governments paralysed over what to do and tensions rising on the ground, there has been a surge in support for populist and far-right parties, who have used the opportunity to further anti-immigrant agendas.

But not everywhere, and certainly not in Ferrette where Mayor

Francois Cohendet has overseen a successful integration and says the migrants’ presence there is “not an issue” but just a part of the community’s normal life.

Which might have been quite a challenge in this town of 740 people in the southern part of Alsace, a region where the far-right has gathered a sizeable following.

Since 2016, Ferrette has permanently taken in about 80 asylum seekers -- half of them children -- from places as far-flung as Afghanistan, Sudan and Armenia.

All of them are hoping to be recognised as refugees -- or at the very least, that France will grant them “subsidiary protection”, the status granted to asylum seekers who do not qualify as refugees.

“They told me that Alsace was an area where there was racism but I haven’t felt it,” says a smiling Djoe Kabuka, a Congolese national.

The only thing about Ferrette, he says, is the lack of public transport and the need to travel to Mulhouse, a town 30 kilometres (18 miles) away, to find the sort of foods the refugees are used to.

The other thing is the weather.

“It gets very cold and very hot here,” smiles Abundance, a teen-

ager from Nigeria.

- Initial hostility -

It was only after a squadron of gendarmes was relocated in 2015, leaving their former barracks empty, that regional officials approached the mayor with a request to use the premises as temporary accommodation for asylum seekers.

And when Cohendet accepted, he found himself on the receiving end of some stiff opposition, even from members of his staff.

“The population, which was initially very resistant to the idea, has seen that everything has gone well, that these are discreet people, who keep themselves to themselves and are not aggressive,” he says.

Pulling out a cardboard folder, he pulls out a pile of flyers and pamphlets. Some carry angry slogans like “Not one migrant in Ferrette” or “This is our home” while others use violent language.

The first to arrive were “two Sudanese with black skin, wearing sandals in the snow,” he recalls.

But while some were protesting, he also saw other residents joining together to help, with the emergence of a group called “Neighbours Around the World” that offered them French lessons, access

to a games library, cooking classes and even lifts to the hospital.

Samir Beldi, director of accommodation at the Mulhouse/Ferrette branch of Adoma, the housing authority that lodges migrants, said things had worked out well.

“The volunteers managed to repair the damage after a few initial worries. There were some pre-

Founded by a former member of the conservative Popular Party (PP), with a strong stance against feminism and illegal immigration, Vox has risen thanks to its hard line against separatists in Catalonia.

The region in northeastern Spain was the scene of a secession attempt in 2017 that sparked the country’s biggest crisis in decades and caused major concern in Europe.

Since then, the crisis has continued to cast a pall over Spanish politics.

Sanchez was forced to call Sunday’s early elections after Catalan pro-independence lawmakers in the national parliament, angered at the trial of their leaders in Madrid, refused to give him the support he needed for his 2019 budget.

PALEMBANG - Hundreds of homes have been flooded in Musi Banyuasin District, South Sumatra Province, following incessant heavy rains since Saturday.

Flooding affected Dawas and Tanjung Dalam villages in Keluang Sub-district, as well as Jud and Air Balui Villages in Sanga Desa Sub -district, First Inspector Eka Sapta Yanto, head of the Keluang police office, said here on Sunday.

“This is the third flooding that has affected local residents. But, this time, the flood is bigger and surprising because the water flow was strong particularly in Tanjung

Dalam Village,” he said.

Two houses respectively in Dawas and Tanjung Dalam villages were swept away and a road connecting the two villages were cut off by the flooding.

“This is the worst flooding as Biduk River, a tributary of Musi River, has spilled over its bank, besides the precipitation was very high,” he remarked.

The floods did not claim any live but displaced several people. Local

authorities have helped move the flood victims to higher grounds.

Keluang District Head Debby Haryanto said some 200 homes were flooded in Dawas and Tanjung Dalam Villages.

“We have already reported to the district administration and disaster mitigation office. Five teams have been deployed there,” he said.

Major floods were also hit several Indonesian provinces, such as Jakarta and Bengkulu. (ant)

Waste-to-energy power plants developed in 12 cities : Minister JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan has revealed that Indonesia has developed waste-toenergy power plants in 12 cities in Indonesia.

“Waste-to-energy generating plants are being applied in cities allowed to treat waste into energy,” Luhut Pandjaitan said here, Sunday when launching Clean Indonesia Movement.

Jakarta has a waste-to-energy power plant capable of treating 1,500 tons of waste daily.

The Government wants three to four waste-to-energy power plants to treat 8,000 tons of waste produced by Jakarta residents daily.

Similar plants exist in Medan (North Sumatra), Surabaya (East Java), Bali , Bandung (West Java),

Manado (north Sulawesi) and several other cities.

The Government will also develop waste inceminators having minimal C02 in regions producing waste below 150 tons per day.

“Those inceminators will be located far away from settlement areas,” he said.

President Joko Widodo has seen waste as a problem that needs to be handled seriously because it could damage the next generation, according to the minister.

He urged every body to care for and be willing to reduce waste production. He also called for a change of life style to reduce single-use plastic product usage.

“If you go for shopping, don’t use plastic bags. Take your own reusable bags,” he said. (afp)

WASHINGTON - The worries that hung ominously over the U.S. economy early this year appear to have lifted.

And that sunnier picture has helped bolster confidence in the stock market — driving the benchmark S&P 500 index to another record high Friday.

The U.S. economy shook off fears of a sharp slowdown in the first quarter of the year and grew at a solid pace, suggesting the nearly decade-long expansion still has a ways to go.

Share prices, though, began to rebound in January, after the Fed signaled that it had put any further rate increases on hold, likely for the rest of the year. That emboldened investors, who have become increasingly confident that the economy will avoid the worst-case scenario of a recession.

After falling nearly 20% at the end of last year, the S&P 500 has now recouped all its losses since late September. Though few Americans have substantial stock holdings, rising share prices can help boost consumer confidence.

Economists cautioned that first quarter growth was driven mostly by several temporary factors that should reverse themselves in coming months. Retailers and other companies, for example, sharply increased the stockpiles of goods in their warehouses and on store shelves. Those additions added nearly 0.7 percentage point to the quarter’s growth figure. And the trade deficit narrowed sharply,

adding an additional percentage point.

“We know this is not going to be sustainable,” said Joe Brusuelas, chief economist at RSM, a tax consulting firm.

Businesses won’t likely order as many new goods as they wait for consumer spending to reduce their stockpiles. That will probably restrain growth. And the improvement in the trade deficit last quarter occurred partly because imports fell sharply after many companies ramped up their buying from China last year in advance of potential tariff increases the Trump administration had scheduled for Jan. 1.

The White House ended up delaying those tariffs. As imports return to normal, the trade deficit will likely widen again.

Exports also rose in the JanuaryMarch period, with China stepping up its purchases of U.S. goods, which some economists attributed to a temporary goodwill gesture

by Beijing amid high-stakes trade

talks between the two countries.

Those negotiations are ongoing.

State and local government spending also rose last quarter, mostly to build more highways, which added 0.4 percentage point to growth and may also prove short-lived.

“Taking out the over-sized boosts from net trade, inventories and highways investment, which will all be reversed in the coming quarters, growth was only around 1%,” said Paul Ashworth, an economist at Capital Economics. “Under those circumstances, we continue to expect that GDP growth will slow this year.”

Larry Kudlow, head of President Donald Trump’s National Economic Council, said the administration is sticking by its estimate that growth will top 3% for all of 2019.

He argued that low unemployment and solid wage gains will lift consumer spending, thereby boosting auto and home sales.

“I think the prosperity cycle is

intact,” Kudlow told CNBC. “I think the Trump policies are working to rebuild America.”

Whether the stock market can continue to march ahead — without additional evidence of corporate or economic strength — is far from clear.

“It’s important to note investors already knew the U.S. economy was the strongest in the world,” said Alec Young, managing director of global markets research at FTSE Russell.

Companies are in the midst of reporting how much profit they made in the first three months of 2019, and investors aren’t expecting much. Analysts are forecasting the first drop in earnings for S&P 500 companies since the spring 2016.

But many companies have so far reported results that were better than Wall Street expected. That’s crucial because stock prices tend to track profit growth over the long term. (ap)

The latest dose of encouragement came in a report Friday that the U.S. economy grew much faster than expected in the January-March quarter, suggesting that the nearly decade-long expansion still has a ways to go.

Other recent signs have fed a growing view among many analysts that the economy faces little risk of slipping into a recession anytime soon as some had feared when the year began. Retail sales jumped in March. And with hiring solid and wages rising at a decent pace, consumer spending will likely strengthen in the coming months.

In Friday’s report, the government said the economy grew at a 3.2% annual rate in the first quarter.

That’s much better than the 1% or below rate that was forecast in the early weeks of 2019.

Though the economy is widely expected to slow in the current quarter to a roughly 2% rate or less, such a pace would still produce annual growth for the first half of the year of roughly 2.5%. That would be a solid gain. And it would be in line with the modest but steady growth that has prevailed for most of the expansion.

It’s also a far brighter scenario than the one envisioned late last year and early this year. A 35-day partial shutdown of the government remained in effect through most of January. Global growth was sputtering in the midst of the U.S.-China trade war. Stocks plummeted in December as the Federal Reserve raised short-term interest rates for the eighth time in nine quarters and signaled that further tightening was likely. Mortgage rates rose, discouraging many would-be home buyers.

American households also cut back: Retailers’ sales were weak in January and February, adding to the bleak outlook.

SEMARAPURA - Peak of the temple festival or piodalan at Batu Medawu Temple, Nusa Penida, took place on January 30. After holding the bhakti penganyar, the series of the temple festival was closed on Saturday (Feb. 2). There is an interesting myth about the establishment of the temple belonging to the sad kahyangan in Klungkung which is related to the failure of Dukuh Jumpungan against Batara Toh Langkir, the ruler of mainland Bali.

Chairperson of the Ritual Committee, Putu Sujana, stated the piodalan in the sad kahyangan temple falls every six months and coincides with the Buda Kliwon Pahang. Local Hindus seemed enthusiastic about making prayers. Moreover, the Regent of Klungkung, Nyoman Suwirta, and his wife also came to say prayers in order that nature and its contents will always be calm and peaceful, in the midst of the current situation increasingly familiar with natural disasters.

This temple has the concept of nyegara gunung or sea-mountainward where there is a combination of land and sea in one form of beauty. At the Batu Medawu Temple, all the pilgrims performed prayers for three times, namely at the Segara, Taman and Penataran Temple.

This temple is supported by half the customary villagers, starting from the customary village of Kutampi Atas to the south and the east.

In addition to the pilgrims coming from their own local community, the festival at the Batu Medawu Temple is also often attended by people from the Island of Bali.

Batu Medawu Temple is located at Suana village, just west of Semaya hamlet. As one of the sad

kahyangan temples in Klungkung, this temple has a long history in its existence in Bali. The local temple priest explained the name Batu Medawu comes from the word perahu medah batu or a boat dividing rocks.

The origin is reinforced by the story of Nusa Penida Chronicle telling about the story of I Renggan, one of the grandchildren of Dukuh Jumpungan who wanted to conquer Bali with his magical boat. In the story, I Renggan is believed to have the capability of making every land passed through by his boat will become an ocean.

“Bathara Toh Langkir knows such desire, so that he made I Renggan unable to control the boat and fall asleep. The boat was stranded in Manggis, Karangasem and crashed into an island there. Finally, the island split and becomes small islands as we see now around Padangbai,” said Jero Mangku.

The priest added that due to his failure, he tried to return to Nusa Penida through the eastern part of the island. When trying to tether the boat, apparently it was not completely under control. Even, it passed to the beach and split the rock mound in the eastern part of the island. In short, the ruin of I Renggan’s boat was made a place of worship currently known as the Batu Medawu Temple.

The story is further strengthened by a symbol in the form of building resembling a boat’s rear part depicting a boat splitting a rock mound. This building can be seen in the Batu Medawu Temple, precisely in the Segara Temple. Batu Medawu Temple serves as a holy place to ask for wisdom, unlike the Dalem Ped functioned to invoke strength. priests and 30 priests from Bali who were also present at that time. “We carry out this activity for the peace of the earth. A total of 25 countries registered to participate. SEMARAPURA - In a series of Puputan Klungkung Day, the anniversary of Semarapura town and the 4th Semarapura Festival this year, the local government inserted activities that encourage the inculcation of young generation’s character.

One of them is through cultural camp. This agenda is meant to strengthen the diversity of young generation and consolidate the character of the nation’s children, so that it becomes a young generation having independent, skilled and unyielding spirit.

This cultural camp was centered at Swecapura Stadium on Friday (Apr. 26). Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Ni Made Ardia Pramesti Cahyani, said the cultural camp took the theme ‘Dharmaning Ksatrya Mahottama’ that can be used by the younger generation to support the development movement in Klungkung. The cultural

camp on April 26-28 coincided with the commemoration of the peak of Puputan Klungkung.

Participants of the cultural camp came from 10 high schools and vocational schools throughout Klungkung district, namely the SMAN 1 Semarapura high school, SMAN 2 Semarapura, SMAN 1 Banjarangkan, PGRI Tourism Vocational School, Yaparindo Tourism Vocational School, SMAN 1 Nusa Penida, SMKN 1 Nusa Penida, SMA Satap Nusa Lembongan and Panca Atma Jaya Health Vocational School. The total participants reached 52 people consisting of 26 male students and 26 female students.

Regent of Klungkung, I Nyoman Suwirta, when visiting the camp participants said the cultural camp can strengthen diversity of young generation. At the same time, it can strengthen the character of younger generation, so that it becomes a

young generation being independent, skilled and responsible for cultural preservation and values of struggle as the values contained in the history of Puputan Klungkung Day commemoration.

“All campers must develop their love and pride in culture as well as basic skills to preserve cultural heritage and national culture,” said Regent Suwirta Furthermore, Regent Suwirta greatly appreciated to the implementation of the activity. But the programme to connect millions of homes to gas, empower women and cut pollution -- designed as a key vote-winning policy for Modi -- has been beset by allegations of corruption and misuse.

Devi says she had to pay 3,000 rupees ($43) for the “free” kit -the equivalent of a month’s wages for most people in her village Nisarpura, in India’s poorest state, Bihar.

“I pleaded with the officials that this is supposed to be free but they gave me two options: Pay and take the kit or forget it,” Devi said, rolling out bread to be cooked on the stove.

Critics say the programme has been marred by bribes and corruption and that the poor households targeted by the scheme cannot afford to pay for gas refills, pushing those who have received new stoves back to traditional fuels.

But the prime minister, seeking a second term in India’s marathon national election, has touted the cooking gas scheme a success as he campaigns around the country.

Batting away criticism, Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government says more than 70 million poor households across India now have gas stoves.

Modi launched his “Ujjwala Yojana” (“bright scheme”) in May 2016, and is aiming to connect 80 million rural households to gas by 2022.

Household pollution is a serious health hazard in India, with a World Health Organization (WHO) report saying that smoke inhaled by women from unclean fuel is a major cause of cancer, heart disease and strokes.

In a bid to move India towards clean energy, the scheme offers recipients a loan of 1,600 rupees ($23) that covers the cost of the stove, connection pipes, regulator and a gas canister.

The loan is supposed to be paid back through the purchase of subsidised gas refills.

In Nisarpura, Jamintra Devi applied for a connection but local officials would not give it unless she paid a bribe.

“We come back from work at midnight or 1:00am and then we have to cook on wood,” said Devi, who is not related to Reena.

Some recipients say their kits have effectively been repossessed.

Shahjahan Khatoon, from an impoverished neighbourhood of the state capital, Patna, enrolled in the scheme in January 2018.

Two months later, officials distributing gas canisters came to her home looking for money.

HUE - Rainbow-coloured hot air balloons ferried giddy visitors over Vietnam’s ancient city of Hue on Sunday for a festival organisers hope will kickstart a passion for flying in the tourist hotspot.

Several balloons -- including one shaped as an octopus, another as a heart -- offered aerial views of the former capital’s sprawling stone citadel, which was once the seat of Vietnam’s emperors. It is not a journey for the faint of heart.

“When the balloon started to go up, I was buzzing and I could see the full view of Hue,” tourist Ha Anh Ngoc told AFP. Hue is one of Vietnam’s most

popular tourist destinations, attracting some 4.3 million visitors last year.

Most visitors travel by foot or cycle rickshaw to see the city’s ancient pagodas, imperial tombs and citadel, which still bears damage from intense fighting during the Vietnam War. Balloon enthusiasts are hoping to change that.

“I really hope hot air ballooning will be more popular and closer to Vietnamese people,” said Vo Ngoc Ha, one of the organisers of the third annual festival.

At $280 for a 40-minute jaunt into the skies, hot air balloon rides

remain out of reach for most.

Some visitors at Sunday’s festival opted instead for a tethered ride for about $6, while others enjoyed the event from the ground, snapping selfies as the balloons soared over the city.

Dutch pilot Wout Bakker, who has come to the festival every year since it was first held in 2017, said he has seen a gradual uptick in interest in hot air ballooning which he hopes will grow further.

“Vietnam has good potential because more and more tourists are coming and also local people -they have money to take flights, so it is building up,” he said. (afp)

Restaurant construction on land of ex-Sari Club draws polemic

MANGUPURA — The construction of a restaurant business on the former Sari Club’s land on Jalan Legian, Kuta, received attention from Chairman of the Badung House of Representatives, Putu Parwata, as the business development drew protests from the Prime Minister of Australia because it is related to the history of the 2002 Bali Bombing.

“Protests from Australia happen because it is a historic place for many Australians that died so it needs to be discussed. Stakeholders must communicate, so that this does not worsen the relationship between Bali, especially Badung and Australia,” said Parwata, on Saturday (Apr. 27).

This politician from Dalung, North Kuta, did not blame on the Investment and Integrated Service Office (DPMPTSP) for issuing building permit because the area is included in trade and service zoning, so the local government cannot ban.

“Basically, the licensing refers to the regional regulation stating the area belongs to a trade and service area. Since until now it has not been revoked from the zoning

of trade and services, the licensors inevitably issue the permits,” he explained.

Nevertheless, he hoped there would be the best solution in overcoming the problem. On that account, Putu Parwata suggested that the governor, regent and chairperson of the House of Representatives to conduct diplomacy with the Australian side.

“We do not want to clash because it will be detrimental to tourism itself. In this case, both the regent, the chairman of the House and the governor must conduct diplomacy. This is my suggestion so as not to cause polemic,” he said.

This Secretary of the PDIP Badung considered the polemic of restaurant development is risky if all parties involved jointly implement their authority. Moreover, it can certainly have an impact on the Bali tourism sector, especially Badung. ”This will have an impact on tourism, so there needs to do diplomacy.

visitors also learn to make organic pesticides and fungicides made from natural ingredients such as spices, leaves and cow urine.

Then what are the advantages of organic agriculture? Badan explained that it is very good for long-term sustainability of agricultural patterns. The fruits produced are also of high quality and safe for consumption. “Farmers can also have cost efficiency. And there are many other benefits,” he explained.

Visitors are not charge admission ticket except donations. He said the opening of Batur Organic Park is meant the effective pattern of organic farming can be applied by all farmers in the future. “I want to share techniques for effective farming patterns, so that in the future many farmers will succeed,” said Badan. According to Agus Aryawan, the issuance of restaurant’s building permit on private property is legitimate because it is in accordance with the provisions and gets support from below in the form of adjacent landowners in the left-right side and front-back side, acknowledged by the hamlet chief, headman and subdistrict head.

“So, the issuance of the building permit has received community’s support, complied with Spatial Planning and has an Environmental Permit. The building permit is issued after going through a process, and it is proposed by the land owner,” he explained.

Even if there is a party intending to free up the land of ex-Sari Club, it will highly depend on the land owner whether he wants to release the land or not.

“As public service provider, we should not treat unfairly and the landowner has the right to use it as long as complying with the prevailing regulations. One of the mandatory conditions for the issuance of the building permit is the clarity on the land status and ownership, so that we administratively and technically have no reason to reject the appeal from the community if the intended conditions are fulfilled. So in principle, we as public service providers in the licensing field respect to individual’s civil rights and the process according to procedures,” he concluded. (kmb27)

In the video featuring cats and a heavy dose of unicorn imagery, Swift memorably shouts out “Spelling is fun!” midway through but proceeds to spell nothing.

Swift has seen a decline in her status in the industry -- scoring just one nomination at this year’s Grammys, where pop was largely ignored in favor of hip hop and countrytinged work -- but commercially remains a megastar.

Her last international tour reportedly grossed $345.7 million over seven months, after which she released a concert film on Netflix.

‘Avengers: Endgame’ breaks India booking records

MUMBAI - The latest Marvel movie “Avengers: Endgame” has smashed Indian box office records for a foreign film ahead of its Friday release by selling more than 2.5 million advance tickets, the country’s main ticket trader said.

Demand for the 22nd film in the Marvel series has been so high that some cinemas are planning round the clock screenings, said Ashish Saksena, chief operating officer of BookMyShow, an online booking platform which announced the sales figures.

With a ticket sold every 18 seconds, cinemas across the usually Bollywood-mad country “are doing everything possible to match fans’ demand for the film,” Saksena said.

And with one day to go, the film could be on track to break the record set by the 2017 Indian film “Bahubali

2”, which notched up 3.3 million advance sales and went on to become the highest-grossing Indian movie, earning $156 million worldwide.

“Avengers: Endgame” opened in parts of Asia and Europe on Wednesday and releases in India, the United States and Canada on Friday.

The movie is releasing in multiple languages across India including English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu. Trade pundits have said the three-hour epic could become the first billion-dollar opening weekend in history.

The first part of the saga,

“Avengers: Infinity War”, was the previous record holder, with less than two million advanced tickets sold. The previous 21 Marvel films have earned about $19 billion globally.

“Anticipation for Avengers is extremely high and it will record unprecedented numbers in India,” Akshaye Rathi, a Mumbai-based trade analyst told AFP. “Craze for the movie is at par with Baahubali 2 and it will break records set by other Hollywood and Bollywood films by a long mile,” Rathi added. At least 10 dead, thousands displaced after severe Indonesia floods

JAKARTA - At least 10 people are dead and eight are missing after days of heavy rain-triggered floods and landslides on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, authorities said Sunday.

Some 12,000 people have been evacuated while hundreds of buildings, bridges and roads have been damaged by the severe weather which affected nine districts or towns across Bengkulu province, officials said. The waters have receded in some places but officials warned the full extent of the damage was not yet known and some areas were still cut off.

“The impact of this disaster may increase,” national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said, adding that several people were also injured in the flooding.

“Landslides and floods could happen again if rainfall is high,” he said.

A “secondary disaster” in the form of skin diseases and acute respiratory infection due to poor

hygiene and a lack of clean water was possible, he added.

Aerial images showed swollen rivers that had burst their banks and inundated settlements in some parts of the province. Public kitchens and evacuation shelters have been set up to cater to some 13,000 people affected by the flooding, while search and rescue teams try to reach hard-hit areas with rubber boats.

“The distribution of aid has been hampered because road access has been cut off by the floods and landslides,” Nugroho said, adding

excavators were being used to clear debris from roads.

Landslides and floods are common in Indonesia, especially during the monsoon season between October and April, when rains lash the vast Southeast Asian archipelago.

Flooding in parts of the Indonesian capital Jakarta this week killed at least two people and forced more than 2000 to evacuate their homes.

Residents of Bogor, a satellite city of Jakarta, had to contend with some 14 pythons that were set loose from a private property due to the

high waters.

Six of the snakes -- which were as long as four metres -- have been found, but the remaining eight remain on the loose, officials said.
