‘I have been truthful’: Charges dropped against Empire actor Jussie Smollett

CHICAGO - Charges have been dropped against Empire actor Jussie Smollett, who was accused of lying to police about a racist and homophobic attack.

The actor, who is black and openly gay, was alleged to have hired two men to help stage an attack in the early hours of 29 January.

He pleaded not guilty to charges at a hearing earlier this month and had been due to appear in court again on 17 April until today’s announcement.

Speaking after the decision, Smollett said: “I have been truthful and consistent on every single level since day one. I would not be my mother’s son if I was capable of one drop of what I have been accused of.

“This has been an incredibly difficult time, honestly one of the worst of my entire life, but I am a man of faith and I am a man that has knowledge of my history and I would not bring my family, our lives, or the movement through a fire like this, I just wouldn’t.”

He continued: “I’d like nothing more than to just get back to work and move on with my life but make no mistakes I will always continue to fight for the justice, equality and betterment of marginalised people everywhere.”

Smollett, 36, also thanked family, friends and well-wishers for their support.

In a statement, Smollett’s attorneys Tina Glandian and Patricia Brown Holmes said his record had now “been wiped clean of the filing of this tragic complaint against him”.

Prosecutors have given no detailed explanation, but confirmed an “appropriate resolution” had been reached.

Smollett’s lawyers said it was the “only just result”.

“Jussie was attacked by two people he was unable to identify on 29 January,” they said. “He was a victim who was vilified and made to appear as a perpetrator as a result of false and inappropriate remarks made to the public, causing an inappropriate rush to judgement. (net)

CALIFORNIA - Cardi B has addressed a video which emerged showing her talking about drugging and robbing men during her time working as a stripper, saying she is “not proud” of her actions but she behaved that way “to survive”.

The Grammy-winning rapper could be seen discussing targeting men while working in New York in a three-year-old clip which resurfaced on social media at the weekend.

It led to the hashtag #SurvivingCardiB, a reference to the documentary Surviving R Kelly, as well as calls to boycott the star’s music.

In a post on Instagram, the 26year-old has now responded to the controversy, saying she did things in her past that “I felt I needed to do to make a living”.

She said she never claimed “to be perfect or come from a perfect world” or have a “perfect past”, adding “I always speak my truth”.

While some rappers glorify “murder, violence, drugs and robbing” in their music, she said she had chosen not to.

“I never glorified the things I brought

up in that live I never even put those things in my music because I’m not proud of it and feel a responsibility not to glorify it,” she wrote.

“I made the choices that I did at the time because I had very limited options.”

Cardi B, whose real name is Belcalis Almanzar, continued: “I was blessed to have been able to rise from that but so many women have not. Whether or not they were poor choices at the time I did what I had to do to survive.”

A truck driver barreled into a group of indigenous Guatemalans on Wednesday night, killing 18 before fleeing the scene as police began a manhunt. The incident occurred at the entry point to the western town of Nahuala, which has a population of around 65,000, most of whom are K’iche’ Maya.

A group of people had converged at the scene of another hit-and-run in which a local community leader was killed, when they in turn were hit by a truck with its lights off on a road without street lighting.

“In total there are 18 deaths that have been counted in this tragedy,” fire department spokesman Cecilio Chacaj told AFP, revising down a previous toll of 30 that he attributed to

early chaos on the scene where bodies were piled up on top of another.

Chacaj added the dead included three minors while 20 had been wounded, some seriously, and were being treated in hospitals.

The government announced three days of mourning from Thursday, while President Jimmy Morales tweeted: “We are currently coordinating actions to provide all

the support to the victims’ families.

My condolences.”

Chilling images broadcast on local television showed the victims’ bodies in their brightly colored clothing laid out in a line on the asphalt, as relatives cried out in anguish.

- Driver on the run Police spokesman Pablo Castillo told reporters that an opera-

tion to capture the driver was now under way.

He added that investigators were initially prevented from getting to the scene by angry relatives but were given access after opening a dialogue with community leaders.

Local reports said the man killed in the first accident was a community leader and president of the state Council of Urban and Rural Development, though authorities have not confirmed this.

The semi-trailer did not have its lights on when it struck the group of people which may have been

why the driver did not spot them, while the highway was also unlit, according to local media.

First Red Carpet Dresses For Royalty, Now Self-Portrait Is Mastering Swimwear

HOW do you feel? How could you feel better?” Han Chong asks me. It’s a question the Self-Portrait designer has asked each of the acquaintances enlisted to trial his pieces, because he’s been on a mission to design for a woman’s mood, as well as her body, from day one. The only thing that has changed?

The customers buying into Chong’s vision of contemporary femininity now includes Beyoncé, Michelle Obama and the Duchesses of Cambridge and Sussex. He’s a good listener.

“You need to understand her to be able to design for her,” continues Chong. “It’s all about the feeling, because clothes are so personal.”

His latest launch: a swimwear edit,

required some serious customer feedback. It was in the inception phase for years before he committed to a production schedule 12 months ago. “I wanted to make sure

that my team was ready to grow and take on the heavier workload,” he clarifies. “And that the factory was capable of producing the quantity to my standards. You only have one chance when launching a new category – your reputation is at stake.”

For the grand unveiling, Chong invited a handful of his influencer friends from all over the world to join him in Langkawi, an island off the mainland coast of northwestern Malaysia and his homeland state Penang. The social currency of his guests posting pictures of themselves wearing Self-Portrait swimwear (search the hashtag #sunseaSP to see for yourself) is undeniable.

Aimee Song, Helena Bordon, Eleonora Carisi et al showed the myriad ways to style the bikinis, one-pieces and cover-ups in prints and colourways inspired by the tropical region of Asia. “These girls have supported the brand from the start,” Chong explains of his network, who happen to have a combined follower count in the millions. “They’ve watched me push a bit more each season, but without going too far from the brand identity.”

Celebrating on the shores that were the backdrop of his childhood brought Chong’s career full circle.

He discovered fashion at the age of 17 when a Central Saint Martins tutor disrupted his quiet lifestyle.

“He introduced me to this amazing subject I knew nothing about, so I went deep into it,” he remembers.

Chong left his parents and their jerky shop, which is still up and running today, and moved to London. After a brief stint dabbling in art (he presented his work in group shows at the Venice Biennale), he cofounded affordable red-carpet brand Three Floor with Yvonne Hoang in 2011, and left two years later to go it alone. Chong’s guipure lace and lattice-embroidered signatures were born, and SelfPortrait became the frontrunner of the affordable red-carpet wear movement.

As a privately-owned company – a rarity in the current fashion landscape – Self-Portrait has had to evolve beyond pretty, affordable dresses, because competition in the contemporary brand sphere is fierce compared to when Chong mapped out his inclusive company strategy. “It’s a positive thing that women now have more choices than just high street or designer,” he says, dismissing his rivals. “It’s a good message to young girls that princesses wear £300 dresses to big events. It makes me proud.” The Self-Portrait dress the Duchess of Cambridge wore to a film premiere in November 2016, for example, continues to sell out and is then put back on pre-order on Self-portraitstudio.com.

Who would he most like to dress? The fan hiding inside the businessman peeps out: “In terms of getting the most engagement and the best response, I love dressing the royals,” he giggles. “They can wear anything they want, and they choose me!” Refreshingly, he’s not afraid to admit that the pieces worn by high-profile clients are the bread and butter that, in part, fuels his brand, but, he clarifies, “The main thing is that a woman can feel free and have fun in my designs – that is how she gets noticed.”

What’s next? “I haven’t thought of another category yet because I want to make swimwear work properly,” he says honestly. “It’s not about my design ego, it’s about surprising the Self-Portrait woman with things she didn’t know she needed all year round.” Place your bets on which celebrity will join the #sunseaSP gang first. SEMARAPURA — Nusa Penida tourism area, especially Lembongan-Jungut Batu, stays the main choice for tourism in Bali.

Every day, there are many boats dropping off thousands of tourists, both from Sanur and Kusamba.

Seeing this situation, the Jungut Batu village authority suggested the making of pontoon so that passengers will be comfortable when getting off the boat.

Headman of Jungut Batu, Made Gede Suryawan, stated on Wednesday (Mar. 27) that he had time to propose it through development plan meeting. He said the proposal has been submitted to the Transportation Agency. However, it is unknown yet when the proposal can be realized. He hoped the pontoon can be realized soon to answer many inputs from boat entrepreneurs. “Traditional harbor of Jungut Batu needs a pontoon of about 300 meters to the middle of the sea, so that tourists can directly drop off to the coast and they will not get wet,” said Suryawan amid his regular activities to monitor tourist activities around the harbor.

The pontoon will make it easier for boats to drop off passengers so there will no longer need the help of emergency stairs or the threat of waves. In his proposal, the pontoon construction can spend a budget of around IDR 1.7 billion.

With the pontoon, the harbor area will become more centralized and no longer difficult to distinguish where to park boat, where to dive and where to snorkel. Meanwhile, at this time he admitted that almost along the coast of Jungut Batu can be taken advantage as a harbor.

“We have also conveyed to the Bali Transportation Agency, so that the anchor throw from other boats and canoes can be carried out further from the coast. By that way, there will be no more anchor on the beach that can make tourists often

fall down,” he said.

A domestic tourist, Kadek Rama, said the current existence of Lembongan-Jungut Batu, at least around the two islands there is a feasible harbor for sea transportation. So far, every corner of the harbor used by traditional harbor is still growing naturally. “The regions like Lembongan-Jungut Batu should at least have one official harbor complying with the standards.

Now, we are just like going to a remote place, whereas this area has been growing rapidly in line with the hard work of local government to develop Nusa Penida tourism,” said Kadek Rama.

Head of the Klungkung Transportation Agency, Nyoman Sucitra, stated on Wednesday (Mar. 27) the proposed pontoon construction had been accepted. However, before reaching the execution stage, the proposal requires further study.

On the other hand, Regent of Klungkung Nyoman Suwirta previously confirmed that around Lembongan and Jungut Batu villages, he planned to build a harbor at Bias Munjul (Nusa Ceningan), as part of the Golden Triangle Harbor program. The plan is said to be just waiting for the masterplan. Meanwhile, the planned Pesinggahan Harbor (Klungkung mainland) is still in the feasibility study stage. If getting no assistance in 2020 from central government, then he takes measures to cooperate with third parties to accelerate the realization of the harbor. At least in 2020, the harbor being ready to be built is the Sampalan (in Nusa Gede).

“Sampalan is a part of the golden triangle harbor that is ready to be established. This concept should be able to unite all the stakeholders, namely the management, sea and land transportation can be connected together,” he hoped. (kmb31)

SEMARAPURA — Bad weather in the form of rains accompanied with strong winds in the past week triggered sea waves to become erratic. Garbage flowing into the sea from a number of rivers in Bali was swept away to the east on Wednesday (Mar. 27). As a result, the coast along Kusamba Beach, Dawan subdistrict, is polluted by garbage from the coast of the Kampung Kusamba traditional harbor, Banjar Bias Harbor, Tri Buana Harbor to the coast of Pesinggahan village.

The drifting garbage snaking along the coastline is very disturbing to the local environment. Such varied garbage is ranging from plastic wrappers to twigs and tree trunks. The drifting garbage flowed to the Kusamba coast, amid large enough waves, to make it difficult for passenger boats and cargo boats to park on the coast. “The pile of garbage scattered across the coast from Kusamba to Pesinggahan.

Thus, the boat must turn aside to search for loopholes in order to drop off passengers,” said one of the boat passengers, Gede Sudiatmika.

Head of the Klungkung Environmental and Land Agency, A.A. Kirana, admitted on Wednesday (Mar. 27) the drifting garbage like this indeed often happened on the beach. So, the agency is regularly instructed by Regent of Klungkung, Nyoman Suwirta, to do beach cleanup activities every week. the living biota in it. “Because of this drifting garbage, many fishermen also complained because the garbage damaged their boat engine. We can also work with fishermen to clean it up later,” said Kirana.

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service (BMKG) reported on Wednesday (Mar. 27) that weather development should be watched out mainly the sea wave height reaching two meters or more in the southern part of the Bali Strait, Badung Strait, South Lombok Strait and Indian Ocean in the south of Bali.

This indicated the crossing process of passengers and goods from three public harbors on Kusamba Beach and Nusa Penida and Jungut Batu must remain alert to the threat of waves. Likewise, the fishermen should temporarily delay fishing.

MANGUPURA - A total of 18 green turtles (Chelonia mydas) were finally released by the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) of Bali together with relevant agencies on Kuta Beach on Wednesday (Mar. 27). Some of the turtles were confiscated on March 13 by the Gianyar Police and the others on March 17 by the Buleleng Police and the Indonesian Navy. Other than releasing confiscated turtles, the release was also made to 50 olive ridley sea turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea) from the results of relocation and semi-natural hatching carried out by the Kuta Beach Taskforce turtle conservation group.

According to the Head of the BKSDA Bali, Budhy Kurniawan, the 27 turtles were confiscated during March 2019. They entirely belong to green turtle with varied length of carapace ranging from 30 cm to 100 cm. Four of them have been released on Penimbangan Beach, Buleleng, and three heads are still being treated by medical team at the Ganesha University of Education in the turtle conservation group of Penimbangan Beach because of illness. Meanwhile, two other heads are treated and set aside as evidence in the TCEC Serangan.

“The turtles have gone through the stages of care and rehabilitation in the pool facilities owned by TCEC Serangan. The turtles are estimated to have gone through a long process starting from catching at sea, traveling overland to finally being caught on the scene,” he concluded.

Budhy said the treatment provided includes treatment against wound on the flipper of ex-ties and recovering conditions from stress after long trips to final statement of the medical team if the animals are worthy of being released. Director of PD Pasar Denpasar, I.B. Kompyang Wiranata, accompanied by General Manager AAN Yuliarta stated the preparation for the implementation of electronic parking system has been long enough. Moreover, the preparation for implementing the electronic

parking system has been made before the soft opening. “After we have provided training for the officers, today (Wednesday—Ed) we start the trial,” said Kompyang Wiratama.

He said the trial will be conducted for a week to find out the existing obstacles because on the first day there were several obstacles faced. “The server had a problem, so it needed a few repairs and needed to be reset in order to be able to function optimally,” he said.

He predicted that within a week everything will run smoothly.

At the beginning of the trial, the problem was not only experienced

by the machine, but visitors were not really familiar with the system.

Actually, there have been some instructions and the management has deployed 40 parking attendants divided into three shifts. “This new system also needs to be disseminated,” he explained.

PD Pasar makes two entry points, namely the entry point from Jalan Gajah Mada and the second one through Jalan Sulawesi. In the meantime, for market access it is only from Jalan Sulawesi.

Singapore defends UN bid for street food honour

MOUNT SODOM - Israeli cave explorers said Thursday that a salt cave with striking stalactites near the Dead Sea is the world’s longest, beating the previous record-holder in Iran.

The cave named Malham, stretching over 10 kilometres (6.25 miles), runs through Mount Sodom, Israel’s largest mountain, and spills out to the southwest corner of the adjacent Dead Sea. Pale salt stalactites hang from the ceilings, and some of the walls sparkle with salt crystals. Drops of salty water are visible at the tips of some of the stalactites.

Malham became known to researchers through the work of Amos Frumkin, founder and director of the Hebrew University’s Cave Research Centre, who in the 1980s mapped around five kilometres of it.

But in 2006, researchers mapped over six kilometres of the N3 cave in southern Iran’s Qeshm island, granting it the widely recognised status of the world’s longest salt cave.

Two years ago, Israeli spelunker Yoav Negev decided to complete Frumkin’s work, reaching out to Bulgarian cave explorers for reinforcements with the promise of a warm winter adventure.

Negev, founder of the Israel Cave Explorers Club, joined forces with Boaz Langford, a researcher at the university’s research centre, to organise a delegation of eight European spelunkers and another 20 locals.

They spent some 10 days mapping the cave in 2018.

A second 10-day expedition this year with 80 local and international spelunkers completed the measuring and mapping of the cave with lasers, determining its length at more than 10 kilometres.

- ‘The most beautiful’ Mount Sodom is essentially a

huge salt block covered by a thin but resilient layer of cap rock.

The rare desert rains find their way through cracks in the cap rock and dissolve the salt to form small caves that flow down toward the Dead Sea. Even in the short period of time since Frumkin’s mapping, the cave’s structure has changed, and will continue to do so.

Much of the cave’s interior is covered by a fine dust that blows in from the desert. Massive slabs of salt, some amber-coloured from dust and minerals, jut out in dramatic formations.

A thin slab appearing to have been sliced out is nicknamed “The Guillotine,” while twin slabs in a different hall earned the title of “The Ten Commandments.”

Reporters touring the site clambered and crawled through the narrow passages before reaching the “wedding hall,” where hundreds of white stalactites of various shapes and lengths created a festive backdrop.

To Negev, Malham was in “a category of its own.”

“There’s nothing like it in Israel,” he said, claiming that no other cave came even close to the 10-kilometre mark.

Negev pointed to its vast network of “caverns, passageways, piers, plateaus, one over another”.

He called it “the most impressive and complex in Israel... and one of the most beautiful and fascinating ones I’ve been in”.

Negev downplayed the significance of retaking the title from Iran -- Israel’s main enemy -- saying he had “excellent ties” with Iranian spelunkers through social media and professional conferences.

“The political rivalry creates a desire to connect and mutual curiosity,” he said. “They’re really excellent spelunkers.”

SINGAPORE - Singapore on Thursday defended nominating its street food for UN recognition as a bid to “safeguard” local culture after the move sparked a cross-border culinary clash with Malaysia.

The city-state is home to many open-air food courts where vendors, known as “hawkers”, serve dishes such as chicken and rice, noodles and satays at relatively cheap prices.

Singapore announced last year it would nominate its hawker culture to be designated as intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO, and if successful it will join items such as traditional Japanese cuisine and Belgian beer on the list.

But the move sparked anger in Malaysia -- while the country’s street food is similar to that in Singapore, Malaysians claim it is generally far superior.

Announcing Singapore’s nomination had been officially submit-

ted this week, senior National Heritage Board official Yeo Kirk Siang insisted the bid was not meant to show the city’s street food was “better” than that of other countries.

“It’s not about countries trying to prove that their cultural practices are better, unique, or that it originated from the country,” he told a press conference.

“What the nomination is about is whether the cultural practice is valued by the community within that country... and whether they are committed to safeguarding these practices within their countries.”

Officials also hope the bid will encourage the younger generation

to get more involved in the street food business.

The news that Singapore was moving forward with the nomination raised hackles in Malaysia, however, with one Facebook user writing: “When Singapore realised it has no culture that is singularly it’s own, it will claim what’s others.”

Singapore and Malaysia have had a testy relationship since a stormy union in the 1960s but tempers really boil over when it comes to food -- where particular dishes come from, and who makes the best versions, is often the subject of heated debate.

US trade gap falls 15 percent to $51.1 billion in January

WASHINGTON — The U.S. trade deficit tumbled nearly 15 percent in January as imports fell and exports rose. Shipments of American goods to China skidded to the lowest level in more than eight years as the world’s two biggest economies remained locked in a trade war.

The Commerce Department said Wednesday that the gap between the goods and services that the United States sells and what it buys from other countries dropped by 14.6 percent to $51.1 billion in January from $59.9 billion in December. Exports rose 0.9 percent to $207.3 billion, and imports dropped 2.6 percent to $258.5 billion.

The deficit in the trade of goods with China narrowed by 6.4 percent to $34.5 billion. U.S. goods exports to China dropped 22.3 percent to $7.1 billion, lowest since September 2010; Chinese imports dropped 9.6 percent to $41.6 billion.

The Trump administration has imposed taxes on $250 billion worth of Chinese imports, and the Chinese have retaliated by targeting about $110 billion in American products.

The two countries are sparring over American allegations that China steals trade secrets and coerces U.S. companies to hand over sensitive technology in a

sharp-elbowed campaign to make Chinese companies world leaders in advanced industries like electric cars and artificial intelligence.

U.S. and Chinese negotiators are meeting this week to move toward a resolution of the dispute, which has rattled global markets and threatened the outlook for the world economy.

Earlier, the Chinese had promised to buy more American soybeans as a goodwill gesture. And in January, U.S. soybean exports overall shot up to $1.2 billion from $299 million in December.

The U.S. also reported a sharp increase in exports of cars, trucks and auto parts in January.

President Donald Trump campaigned on a pledge to reduce America’s longstanding trade deficit with the rest of the world. He sees the gap as a sign of economic weakness and as the result of bad trade deals and abusive practices by America’s trading partners.

In addition to targeting Chinese products, Trump has aggressively slapped tariffs on imported steel, aluminum, dishwashers and solar panels.

But last year the overall trade gap hit the highest level since 2008, and the deficit in the trade of goods with China hit a record.

Mainstream economists view trade deficits as the result of an economic reality unlikely to yield to changes in trade policy: Americans buy more than they produce, and imports fill the gap. The strong U.S. economy also encourages Americans to buy more foreign products.

U.S. exports are also hurt by the American dollar’s role as the world’s currency. The dollar is usually in high demand because it is used in so many global transactions. That means the dollar is persistently strong, raising prices of U.S. products and putting American companies at a disadvantage in foreign markets.(ap)

Despair, anger as Venezuelans endure paralyzing blackout

CARACAS - Venezuelans wavered between despair and rage Wednesday as they endured a third day of a near-nationwide blackout that has paralyzed their country -- the second such outage this month.

“Food stocks are starting to rot.

There’s no water. The transport virtually doesn’t work. There’s no means of communication,” said Nestor Carreno, who was forced to shutter his pizzeria in a formerly upscale district of Caracas.

“I don’t know how my family is doing. Insecurity is growing.”

A cacophony of saucepans being banged out of windows and car horns in the street has filled the capital since the start of the vast outage.

Memories of the first, which began March 7 and lasted a week -- forcing citizens to seek water from rivers and sewage outflows as pumps came to a halt -- fed the anguish. Many residents stocked up on food and water.

The government of President Nicolas Maduro, which blamed the blackouts on US “cybernetic” attacks and opposition “sabotage” and “terrorism,” ordered the closure of public offices and schools, which was extended to Thursday.

Communications Minister Jorge Rodriguez said a new power cut

had plunged some parts of Caracas and other regions into the darkness once again, shortly after electricity had been restored.

He said work was continuing to fix “equipment damaged by terrorism.”

The outage was affecting 21 of Venezuela’s 23 states, according to social media users.

The government has given no official information on its scale.

Juan Guaido, the opposition leader whom the US and many of its allies recognize as the country’s interim president over Maduro, called for a national protest on Saturday over “the lack of public services.”

“The light has gone, we can’t remain passive actors,” Guaido told supporters.

He has rejected the government’s allegations that the opposition was behind the latest blackout as “lies.”

Maduro responded to Guaido’s planned national protest by calling for a “large mobilization” in defense of his government on Saturday.

- ‘The worst you can live through’ -

Caracas resident Mildred Tejeras, 48, explained the daily hardships.

“You don’t know if you’ll be able to get back home if you’ve gone out to look for something to eat or, now, power or water. We are living through the worst that you can live through in Venezuela,” she said.

Power cuts have become frequent in Venezuela over the past few years, underlining the long slide into crisis that the country, once South America’s wealthiest, has experienced.

But this month’s blackouts were unprecedented in scale. Experts calculate they cost Venezuela’s economy $200 million per day.

In both cases, the government said they were caused by disruptions at the country’s main power plant, the Guri hydroelectric dam on the Orinoco River in the south that supplies 80 percent of Venezuelans’ power. (afp)

UK PM to renew Brexit deal push after pledge to resign LONDON - British Prime Minister Theresa May will renew attempts to push through her Brexit plan, after she dramatically offered to quit to save her deal and MPs failed in their own bid to break the deadlock.

At risk of losing control of the process of leaving the European Union, the leader announced she would resign if parliament finally backed her withdrawal agreement.

The offer came just hours before the House of Commons took part in an unprecedented series of votes to seek an alternative plan -- but all eight proposals failed to find a majority, highlighting divisions among MPs. Brexit minister Steve Barclay said the outcome “strengthens our view that the deal our government has negotiated is the best option”.

MPs have twice rejected May’s Brexit deal, both times by large majorities, prompting the leader to announce what is expected to be her final offer.

“I know there is a desire for a new approach -- and new leadership -- in the second phase of the Brexit negotiations and I won’t stand in the way of that,” she told a packed meeting of her Conservative MPs. “But we need to get the deal through and deliver Brexit. I am prepared to leave this job earlier than I intended in order to do what is right for our country and our party.”

There are signs of softening among her rebel MPs, with a number of Eurosceptics performing a U-turn including former foreign secretary Boris Johnson -- a likely contender to replace May -- who told fellow MPs on Wednesday he would support the deal.

But her offer may not be enough to win round some hardliners, including a group of Conservatives reported to call themselves “The Spartans” who are still holding out -- as is the Democratic Unionist Party, the Northern Irish party which props up May’s government.

Frustrated by May’s refusal to change strategy, backbench MPs staged their own series of votes.

MPs were asked to vote yes or no to eight options but there was no majority for any of them.

A plan for a new customs union with the EU after Brexit came closest, defeated by a slim margin of 272 votes to 264, but May has repeatedly ruled out this option.

A proposal to put May’s deal, if agreed, to a “confirmatory” public vote also came close to passing, defeated by 295 to 268 votes -- a result that drew huge cheers in the Commons.

Papuan fighters vow more attacks on Indonesian highway

JAKARTA — Papuan independence fighters are vowing more attacks on a highway that’s the Indonesian president’s key development project in the country’s troubled easternmost region.

The threat was made in a video purportedly recorded last week in the Nduga area of Papua province’s central highlands. The video and photos show about 40 fighters, a few with Indonesian military assault rifles and other weapons.

In the video, a man standing next to a liberation army commander, Egianus Kogoya, reads out a statement that taunts the military for being unable to find the Papuan fighters even though they’re in the same mountainous area.

Kogoya, who also speaks in the video, said, “We cannot step back, we will not hesitate, we would pursue (military and police) until Jakarta gives us independence, our nation must unite to separate from the Republic of Indonesia.”

Indonesian forces have poured into Nduga since rebels killed 19 people working on the trans-Papua highway on Dec. 2. The government of President Joko Widodo says the highway will speed up economic development of West Papua and Papua provinces, among the poorest regions in Indonesia, but independence supporters see the project as a way for Jakarta to cement control over the region.

An insurgency has simmered in Papua, which makes up the western half of the island of New Guinea,

since the early 1960s when Indonesia annexed the Dutch-controlled territory.

Discrimination against indigenous Papuans and abuses by Indonesian police and military have drawn renewed attention globally as Indonesia campaigns for membership in the U.N.’s human rights watchdog.

An Indonesian human rights lawyer, Veronica Koman, and a Papuan activist, Victor Yeimo, addressed the council earlier this month. They said 25 civilians have died as a result of military and police security operations in Nduga since the Dec. 2 attack.

Indonesia replied that security forces are “trying to be very selective and cautious in the attempt to bring all perpetrators of the heinous killing” on Dec. 2 to justice.

The military says civilian workers on the highway have fled and its engineers will build the 21 bridges needed to complete it.

Papuan fighters claimed to have seized weapons from Indonesian soldiers in a Mar. 7 gunfight in Nduga that according to the military killed three soldiers and at least one Papuan. Indonesia’s military also claimed to have recovered weapons The statement read out in the video said the liberation army recovered three Indonesian-made SS-2 assault rifles during the March attack. One such weapon is visible in photos as well as a first-generation SS rifle. (ap)

BalikpapanSamarinda toll road to be completed this year: Jokowi

BALIKPAPAN - Incumbent President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has promised to complete the construction of the Balikpapan-Samarinda toll road in East Kalimantan Province by this year.

“The Samarinda-Balikpapan toll road is not yet ready; 20 percent of the road is yet to be completed and we will finish it later this year. I am following up on this,” Jokowi said during an open campaign here on Thursday.

The toll road will cut short the time taken to travel from Balikpapan to Samarinda from three hours to one hour. The toll road will also be extended to Bontang.

In order to increase the national oil stock and create more job opportunities, he also promised to build oil refineries in Balikpapan and Bontang. “This is mainly to ensure the availability of oil stocks, and at the same time, to create as many job opportunities as pos-

sible,” Jokowi said.

Jokowi has been a part of election campaign rallies in several cities on the Kalimantan Island. He started his campaign in Pontianak in West Kalimantan Province on Wednesday morning, and in the afternoon, proceeded to Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan.

On Thursday, he campaigned in Balikpapan, and later proceeded to Mamuju in West Sulawesi Province.

During the campaign rallies, he was accompanied by members of his national campaign team (TKN), such as Erick Thohir (TKN chairman), TKN Deputy Chairman Moeldoko, and Abdul Kadir Karding, Yenny Wahid, as well as Chairman of Islam-based political

party PBB Yusril Ihza Mahendra.

Manchester United appointed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the club’s permanent manager on a three-year contract on Thursday following a highly successful caretaker spell in charge.

The Norwegian, 46, has inspired a dramatic revival of United’s fortunes since taking over from the sacked Jose Mourinho in December, winning 14 of his 19 games and leading the Red Devils to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Solskjaer, who scored 126 goals in 366 appearances for United, was already a hero to fans as the man who scored the stoppage-time winner in the 1999 Champions League final to complete the treble.

“From the first day I arrived, I felt at home at this special club,” Solskjaer said in a statement on the club’s website. “It was an honour to be a Manchester United player, and then to start my coaching career here.

“The last few months have been a fantastic experience and I want to thank all of the coaches, players and staff for the work we’ve done so far.

“This is the job that I always dreamed of doing and I’m beyond excited to have the chance to lead the club long-term and hopefully deliver the continued success that our amazing fans deserve.”

United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward said: “More than just performances and results, Ole brings a wealth of experience, both as a player and as a coach, coupled with a desire to give young players their chance and a deep understanding of the culture of the club.”

After Mourinho was sacked following a 3-1 loss to Liverpool on December 16, Solskjaer initially arrived from Norwegian club Molde “on loan” until the end of the season.

Solskjaer, who spent 11 seasons at Old Trafford as a player, took over with the club in sixth place in the Premier League, 11 points off the top four.

But they have lost just once in the league since then and are now in fifth place, just two points behind fourth-placed Arsenal, with eight games remaining in the season.

Journalist Rafael Henzel, one of just six survivors of the 77 people on board the plane that crashed carrying the Brazilian football team Chapecoense in 2016, has died of heart attack that struck while he was playing soccer with friends, his employers Radio Oeste Capital announced on Thursday.

Henze, 45, had been on the plane to Medellin in November 2016 as a radio journalist when the aircraft ran out of fuel, with 19 members of the Chapecoense team losing their lives.

“He was playing football with friends when he had a heart attack. He was rushed to hospital in Chapeco, where unfortunately he was declared dead,” Radio Oeste Capital reported.

The Brazilian club said on its website: “Throughout his brilliant career, Rafael told the story of Chapecoense,” “We wholeheartedly hope that the family will have the strength to face yet another difficult time and this irreparable loss. The feelings and prayers of all the Chapecoenses, fans and listeners, are with you,” the football club said on it’s website.

Henze published a book in June 2017 titled “Live each day as if it were your last”. “I have two dates of birth,” he said in his book.

“I am Brazilian and Colombian and it won’t be enough merely to live, I have to justify it,” he explained. Three footballers and two of the plane crew also survived the crash. (afp)

Despair, anger as Venezuelans endure paralyzing blackout

CARACAS - Venezuelans wavered between despair and rage Wednesday as they endured a third day of a near-nationwide blackout that has paralyzed their country -- the second such outage this month.

“Food stocks are starting to rot.

There’s no water. The transport virtually doesn’t work. There’s no means of communication,” said Nestor Carreno, who was forced to shutter his pizzeria in a formerly upscale district of Caracas.

“I don’t know how my family is doing. Insecurity is growing.”

A cacophony of saucepans being banged out of windows and car horns in the street has filled the capital since the start of the vast outage.

Memories of the first, which began March 7 and lasted a week -- forcing citizens to seek water from rivers and sewage outflows as pumps came to a halt -- fed the anguish. Many residents stocked up on food and water.

The government of President Nicolas Maduro, which blamed the blackouts on US “cybernetic” attacks and opposition “sabotage” and “terrorism,” ordered the closure of public offices and schools, which was extended to Thursday.

Communications Minister Jorge Rodriguez said a new power cut

had plunged some parts of Caracas and other regions into the darkness once again, shortly after electricity had been restored.

He said work was continuing to fix “equipment damaged by terrorism.”

The outage was affecting 21 of Venezuela’s 23 states, according to social media users.

The government has given no official information on its scale.

Juan Guaido, the opposition leader whom the US and many of its allies recognize as the country’s interim president over Maduro, called for a national protest on Saturday over “the lack of public services.”

“The light has gone, we can’t remain passive actors,” Guaido told supporters.

He has rejected the government’s allegations that the opposition was behind the latest blackout as “lies.”

Maduro responded to Guaido’s planned national protest by calling for a “large mobilization” in defense of his government on Saturday.

- ‘The worst you can live through’ -

Caracas resident Mildred Tejeras, 48, explained the daily hardships.

“You don’t know if you’ll be able to get back home if you’ve gone out to look for something to eat or, now, power or water. We are living through the worst that you can live through in Venezuela,” she said.

Power cuts have become frequent in Venezuela over the past few years, underlining the long slide into crisis that the country, once South America’s wealthiest, has experienced.

But this month’s blackouts were unprecedented in scale. Experts calculate they cost Venezuela’s economy $200 million per day.

In both cases, the government said they were caused by disruptions at the country’s main power plant, the Guri hydroelectric dam on the Orinoco River in the south that supplies 80 percent of Venezuelans’ power. (afp)

UK PM to renew Brexit deal push after pledge to resign LONDON - British Prime Minister Theresa May will renew attempts to push through her Brexit plan, after she dramatically offered to quit to save her deal and MPs failed in their own bid to break the deadlock.

At risk of losing control of the process of leaving the European Union, the leader announced she would resign if parliament finally backed her withdrawal agreement.

The offer came just hours before the House of Commons took part in an unprecedented series of votes to seek an alternative plan -- but all eight proposals failed to find a majority, highlighting divisions among MPs. Brexit minister Steve Barclay said the outcome “strengthens our view that the deal our government has negotiated is the best option”.

MPs have twice rejected May’s Brexit deal, both times by large majorities, prompting the leader to announce what is expected to be her final offer.

“I know there is a desire for a new approach -- and new leadership -- in the second phase of the Brexit negotiations and I won’t stand in the way of that,” she told a packed meeting of her Conservative MPs. “But we need to get the deal through and deliver Brexit. I am prepared to leave this job earlier than I intended in order to do what is right for our country and our party.”

There are signs of softening among her rebel MPs, with a number of Eurosceptics performing a U-turn including former foreign secretary Boris Johnson -- a likely contender to replace May -- who told fellow MPs on Wednesday he would support the deal.

But her offer may not be enough to win round some hardliners, including a group of Conservatives reported to call themselves “The Spartans” who are still holding out -- as is the Democratic Unionist Party, the Northern Irish party which props up May’s government.

Frustrated by May’s refusal to change strategy, backbench MPs staged their own series of votes.

MPs were asked to vote yes or no to eight options but there was no majority for any of them.

A plan for a new customs union with the EU after Brexit came closest, defeated by a slim margin of 272 votes to 264, but May has repeatedly ruled out this option.

A proposal to put May’s deal, if agreed, to a “confirmatory” public vote also came close to passing, defeated by 295 to 268 votes -- a result that drew huge cheers in the Commons.

Time has now been set aside on Monday for MPs to try and whittle down the most popular options -- however, the motions are not binding on May. (afp)

Papuan fighters vow more attacks on Indonesian highway

JAKARTA — Papuan independence fighters are vowing more attacks on a highway that’s the Indonesian president’s key development project in the country’s troubled easternmost region.

The threat was made in a video purportedly recorded last week in the Nduga area of Papua province’s central highlands. The video and photos show about 40 fighters, a few with Indonesian military assault rifles and other weapons.

In the video, a man standing next to a liberation army commander, Egianus Kogoya, reads out a statement that taunts the military for being unable to find the Papuan fighters even though they’re in the same mountainous area.

Kogoya, who also speaks in the video, said, “We cannot step back, we will not hesitate, we would pursue (military and police) until Jakarta gives us independence, our nation must unite to separate from the Republic of Indonesia.”

Indonesian forces have poured into Nduga since rebels killed 19 people working on the trans-Papua highway on Dec. 2. The government of President Joko Widodo says the highway will speed up economic development of West Papua and Papua provinces, among the poorest regions in Indonesia, but independence supporters see the project as a way for Jakarta to cement control over the region.

An insurgency has simmered in Papua, which makes up the western half of the island of New Guinea,

since the early 1960s when Indonesia annexed the Dutch-controlled territory.

Discrimination against indigenous Papuans and abuses by Indonesian police and military have drawn renewed attention globally as Indonesia campaigns for membership in the U.N.’s human rights watchdog.

An Indonesian human rights lawyer, Veronica Koman, and a Papuan activist, Victor Yeimo, addressed the council earlier this month. They said 25 civilians have died as a result of military and police security operations in Nduga since the Dec. 2 attack.

Indonesia replied that security forces are “trying to be very selective and cautious in the attempt to bring all perpetrators of the heinous killing” on Dec. 2 to justice.

The military says civilian workers on the highway have fled and its engineers will build the 21 bridges needed to complete it.

Papuan fighters claimed to have seized weapons from Indonesian soldiers in a Mar. 7 gunfight in Nduga that according to the military killed three soldiers and at least one Papuan. Indonesia’s military also claimed to have recovered weapons The statement read out in the video said the liberation army recovered three Indonesian-made SS-2 assault rifles during the March attack. One such weapon is visible in photos as well as a first-generation SS rifle. (ap)

BALIKPAPAN - Incumbent President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has promised to complete the construction of the Balikpapan-Samarinda toll road in East Kalimantan Province by this year.

“The Samarinda-Balikpapan toll road is not yet ready; 20 percent of the road is yet to be completed and we will finish it later this year. I am following up on this,” Jokowi said during an open campaign here on Thursday.

The toll road will cut short the time taken to travel from Balikpapan to Samarinda from three hours to one hour. The toll road will also be extended to Bontang.

In order to increase the national oil stock and create more job opportunities, he also promised to build oil refineries in Balikpapan and Bontang. “This is mainly to ensure the availability of oil stocks, and at the same time, to create as many job opportunities as pos-

sible,” Jokowi said.

Jokowi has been a part of election campaign rallies in several cities on the Kalimantan Island. He started his campaign in Pontianak in West Kalimantan Province on Wednesday morning, and in the afternoon, proceeded to Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan.

On Thursday, he campaigned in Balikpapan, and later proceeded to Mamuju in West Sulawesi Province.

US trade gap falls 15 percent to $51.1 billion in January

WASHINGTON — The U.S. trade deficit tumbled nearly 15 percent in January as imports fell and exports rose. Shipments of American goods to China skidded to the lowest level in more than eight years as the world’s two biggest economies remained locked in a trade war.

The Commerce Department said Wednesday that the gap between the goods and services that the United States sells and what it buys from other countries dropped by 14.6 percent to $51.1 billion in January from $59.9 billion in December. Exports rose 0.9 percent to $207.3 billion, and imports dropped 2.6 percent to $258.5 billion.

The deficit in the trade of goods with China narrowed by 6.4 percent to $34.5 billion. U.S. goods exports to China dropped 22.3 percent to $7.1 billion, lowest since September 2010; Chinese imports dropped 9.6 percent to $41.6 billion.

The Trump administration has imposed taxes on $250 billion worth of Chinese imports, and the Chinese have retaliated by targeting about $110 billion in American products.

The two countries are sparring over American allegations that China steals trade secrets and coerces U.S. companies to hand over sensitive technology in a

sharp-elbowed campaign to make Chinese companies world leaders in advanced industries like electric cars and artificial intelligence.

U.S. and Chinese negotiators are meeting this week to move toward a resolution of the dispute, which has rattled global markets and threatened the outlook for the world economy.

Israelis unveil ‘world’s longest salt cave’

MANGUPURA - A total of 18 green turtles (Chelonia mydas) were finally released by the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) of Bali together with relevant agencies on Kuta Beach on Wednesday (Mar. 27). Some of the turtles were confiscated on March 13 by the Gianyar Police and the others on March 17 by the Buleleng Police and the Indonesian Navy. Other than releasing confiscated turtles, the release was also made to 50 olive ridley sea turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea) from the results of relocation and semi-natural hatching carried out by the Kuta Beach Taskforce turtle conservation group.

According to the Head of the BKSDA Bali, Budhy Kurniawan, the 27 turtles were confiscated during March 2019. They entirely belong to green turtle with varied length of carapace ranging from 30 cm to 100 cm. Four of them have been released on Penimbangan Beach, Buleleng, and three heads are still being treated by medical team at the Ganesha University of Education in the turtle conservation group of Penimbangan Beach because of illness. Meanwhile, two other heads are treated and set aside as evidence in the TCEC Serangan.

“The turtles have gone through the stages of care and rehabilitation in the pool facilities owned by TCEC Serangan. The turtles are estimated to have gone through a long process starting from catching at sea, traveling overland to finally being caught on the scene,” he concluded.

Budhy said the treatment provided includes treatment against wound on the flipper of ex-ties and recovering conditions from stress after long trips to final statement of the medical team if the animals are worthy of being released. Singapore defends UN bid for street food honour

MOUNT SODOM - Israeli cave explorers said Thursday that a salt cave with striking stalactites near the Dead Sea is the world’s longest, beating the previous record-holder in Iran.

The cave named Malham, stretching over 10 kilometres (6.25 miles), runs through Mount Sodom, Israel’s largest mountain, and spills out to the southwest corner of the adjacent Dead Sea. Pale salt stalactites hang from the ceilings, and some of the walls sparkle with salt crystals. Drops of salty water are visible at the tips of some of the stalactites.

Malham became known to researchers through the work of Amos Frumkin, founder and director of the Hebrew University’s Cave Research Centre, who in the 1980s mapped around five kilometres of it.

But in 2006, researchers mapped over six kilometres of the N3 cave in southern Iran’s Qeshm island, granting it the widely recognised status of the world’s longest salt cave.

Two years ago, Israeli spelunker Yoav Negev decided to complete Frumkin’s work, reaching out to Bulgarian cave explorers for reinforcements with the promise of a warm winter adventure.

Negev, founder of the Israel Cave Explorers Club, joined forces with Boaz Langford, a researcher at the university’s research centre, to organise a delegation of eight European spelunkers and another 20 locals.

They spent some 10 days mapping the cave in 2018.

A second 10-day expedition this year with 80 local and international spelunkers completed the measuring and mapping of the cave with lasers, determining its length at more than 10 kilometres.

- ‘The most beautiful’ Mount Sodom is essentially a

huge salt block covered by a thin but resilient layer of cap rock.

The rare desert rains find their way through cracks in the cap rock and dissolve the salt to form small caves that flow down toward the Dead Sea. Even in the short period of time since Frumkin’s mapping, the cave’s structure has changed, and will continue to do so.

Much of the cave’s interior is covered by a fine dust that blows in from the desert. Massive slabs of salt, some amber-coloured from dust and minerals, jut out in dramatic formations.

A thin slab appearing to have been sliced out is nicknamed “The Guillotine,” while twin slabs in a different hall earned the title of “The Ten Commandments.”

Reporters touring the site clambered and crawled through the narrow passages before reaching the “wedding hall,” where hundreds of white stalactites of various shapes and lengths created a festive backdrop.

To Negev, Malham was in “a category of its own.”

“There’s nothing like it in Israel,” he said, claiming that no other cave came even close to the 10-kilometre mark.

Negev pointed to its vast network of “caverns, passageways, piers, plateaus, one over another”.

He called it “the most impressive and complex in Israel... and one of the most beautiful and fascinating ones I’ve been in”.

Negev downplayed the significance of retaking the title from Iran -- Israel’s main enemy -- saying he had “excellent ties” with Iranian spelunkers through social media and professional conferences.

“The political rivalry creates a desire to connect and mutual curiosity,” he said. “They’re really excellent spelunkers.”

SINGAPORE - Singapore on Thursday defended nominating its street food for UN recognition as a bid to “safeguard” local culture after the move sparked a cross-border culinary clash with Malaysia.

The city-state is home to many open-air food courts where vendors, known as “hawkers”, serve dishes such as chicken and rice, noodles and satays at relatively cheap prices.

Singapore announced last year it would nominate its hawker culture to be designated as intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO, and if successful it will join items such as traditional Japanese cuisine and Belgian beer on the list.

But the move sparked anger in Malaysia -- while the country’s street food is similar to that in Singapore, Malaysians claim it is generally far superior.

Announcing Singapore’s nomination had been officially submit-

ted this week, senior National Heritage Board official Yeo Kirk Siang insisted the bid was not meant to show the city’s street food was “better” than that of other countries.

“It’s not about countries trying to prove that their cultural practices are better, unique, or that it originated from the country,” he told a press conference.

“What the nomination is about is whether the cultural practice is valued by the community within that country... and whether they are committed to safeguarding these practices within their countries.”

Officials also hope the bid will encourage the younger generation

to get more involved in the street food business.

The news that Singapore was moving forward with the nomination raised hackles in Malaysia, however, with one Facebook user writing: “When Singapore realised it has no culture that is singularly it’s own, it will claim what’s others.”

Singapore and Malaysia have had a testy relationship since a stormy union in the 1960s but tempers really boil over when it comes to food -- where particular dishes come from, and who makes the best versions, is often the subject of heated debate.

HOW do you feel? How could you feel better?” Han Chong asks me. It’s a question the Self-Portrait designer has asked each of the acquaintances enlisted to trial his pieces, because he’s been on a mission to design for a woman’s mood, as well as her body, from day one. The only thing that has changed?

The customers buying into Chong’s vision of contemporary femininity now includes Beyoncé, Michelle Obama and the Duchesses of Cambridge and Sussex. He’s a good listener.

“You need to understand her to be able to design for her,” continues Chong. “It’s all about the feeling, because clothes are so personal.”

His latest launch: a swimwear edit,

required some serious customer feedback. It was in the inception phase for years before he committed to a production schedule 12 months ago. “I wanted to make sure

that my team was ready to grow and take on the heavier workload,” he clarifies. “And that the factory was capable of producing the quantity to my standards. You only have one chance when launching a new category – your reputation is at stake.”

For the grand unveiling, Chong invited a handful of his influencer friends from all over the world to join him in Langkawi, an island off the mainland coast of northwestern Malaysia and his homeland state Penang. The social currency of his guests posting pictures of themselves wearing Self-Portrait swimwear (search the hashtag #sunseaSP to see for yourself) is undeniable.

Aimee Song, Helena Bordon, Eleonora Carisi et al showed the myriad ways to style the bikinis, one-pieces and cover-ups in prints and colourways inspired by the tropical region of Asia. “These girls have supported the brand from the start,” Chong explains of his network, who happen to have a combined follower count in the millions. “They’ve watched me push a bit more each season, but without going too far from the brand identity.”

Celebrating on the shores that were the backdrop of his childhood brought Chong’s career full circle.

He discovered fashion at the age of 17 when a Central Saint Martins tutor disrupted his quiet lifestyle.

“He introduced me to this amazing subject I knew nothing about, so I went deep into it,” he remembers.

Chong left his parents and their jerky shop, which is still up and running today, and moved to London. After a brief stint dabbling in art (he presented his work in group shows at the Venice Biennale), he cofounded affordable red-carpet brand Three Floor with Yvonne Hoang in 2011, and left two years later to go it alone. Chong’s guipure lace and lattice-embroidered signatures were born, and SelfPortrait became the frontrunner of the affordable red-carpet wear movement.

As a privately-owned company – a rarity in the current fashion landscape – Self-Portrait has had to evolve beyond pretty, affordable dresses, because competition in the contemporary brand sphere is fierce compared to when Chong mapped out his inclusive company strategy. “It’s a positive thing that women now have more choices than just high street or designer,” he says, dismissing his rivals. “It’s a good message to young girls that princesses wear £300 dresses to big events. It makes me proud.” The Self-Portrait dress the Duchess of Cambridge wore to a film premiere in November 2016, for example, continues to sell out and is then put back on pre-order on Self-portraitstudio.com.

Who would he most like to dress? The fan hiding inside the businessman peeps out: “In terms of getting the most engagement and the best response, I love dressing the royals,” he giggles. “They can wear anything they want, and they choose me!” Refreshingly, he’s not afraid to admit that the pieces worn by high-profile clients are the bread and butter that, in part, fuels his brand, but, he clarifies, “The main thing is that a woman can feel free and have fun in my designs – that is how she gets noticed.”

What’s next? “I haven’t thought of another category yet because I want to make swimwear work properly,” he says honestly. “It’s not about my design ego, it’s about surprising the Self-Portrait woman with things she didn’t know she needed all year round.” Place your bets on which celebrity will join the #sunseaSP gang first. Every day, there are many boats dropping off thousands of tourists, both from Sanur and Kusamba.

Seeing this situation, the Jungut Batu village authority suggested the making of pontoon so that passengers will be comfortable when getting off the boat.

Headman of Jungut Batu, Made Gede Suryawan, stated on Wednesday (Mar. 27) that he had time to propose it through development plan meeting. He said the proposal has been submitted to the Transportation Agency. However, it is unknown yet when the proposal can be realized. He hoped the pontoon can be realized soon to answer many inputs from boat entrepreneurs. “Traditional harbor of Jungut Batu needs a pontoon of about 300 meters to the middle of the sea, so that tourists can directly drop off to the coast and they will not get wet,” said Suryawan amid his regular activities to monitor tourist activities around the harbor.

The pontoon will make it easier for boats to drop off passengers so there will no longer need the help of emergency stairs or the threat of waves. In his proposal, the pontoon construction can spend a budget of around IDR 1.7 billion.

With the pontoon, the harbor area will become more centralized and no longer difficult to distinguish where to park boat, where to dive and where to snorkel. Meanwhile, at this time he admitted that almost along the coast of Jungut Batu can be taken advantage as a harbor.

“We have also conveyed to the Bali Transportation Agency, so that the anchor throw from other boats and canoes can be carried out further from the coast. By that way, there will be no more anchor on the beach that can make tourists often

fall down,” he said.

A domestic tourist, Kadek Rama, said the current existence of Lembongan-Jungut Batu, at least around the two islands there is a feasible harbor for sea transportation. If getting no assistance in 2020 from central government, then he takes measures to cooperate with third parties to accelerate the realization of the harbor. At least in 2020, the harbor being ready to be built is the Sampalan (in Nusa Gede).

SEMARAPURA — Bad weather in the form of rains accompanied with strong winds in the past week triggered sea waves to become erratic. Garbage flowing into the sea from a number of rivers in Bali was swept away to the east on Wednesday (Mar. 27). As a result, the coast along Kusamba Beach, Dawan subdistrict, is polluted by garbage from the coast of the Kampung Kusamba traditional harbor, Banjar Bias Harbor, Tri Buana Harbor to the coast of Pesinggahan village.

The drifting garbage snaking along the coastline is very disturbing to the local environment. Such varied garbage is ranging from plastic wrappers to twigs and tree trunks. The drifting garbage flowed to the Kusamba coast, amid large enough waves, to make it difficult for passenger boats and cargo boats to park on the coast. “The pile of garbage scattered across the coast from Kusamba to Pesinggahan.

Digitalization encourages faster economic growth

Deputy Director of Bank Indonesia for Bali Representative Office (KPw), Sapto Widyatmiko, accompanied by BI analyst for Bali Representative Office, Umran Usman, said that digital economy has increasingly been included in the aspects of life. ‘I have been truthful’: Charges dropped against Empire actor Jussie Smollett

CHICAGO - Charges have been dropped against Empire actor Jussie Smollett, who was accused of lying to police about a racist and homophobic attack.

The actor, who is black and openly gay, was alleged to have hired two men to help stage an attack in the early hours of 29 January.

He pleaded not guilty to charges at a hearing earlier this month and had been due to appear in court again on 17 April until today’s announcement.

Speaking after the decision, Smollett said: “I have been truthful and consistent on every single level since day one. I would not be my mother’s son if I was capable of one drop of what I have been accused of.

“This has been an incredibly difficult time, honestly one of the worst of my entire life, but I am a man of faith and I am a man that has knowledge of my history and I would not bring my family, our lives, or the movement through a fire like this, I just wouldn’t.”

He continued: “I’d like nothing more than to just get back to work and move on with my life but make no mistakes I will always continue to fight for the justice, equality and betterment of marginalised people everywhere.”

Smollett, 36, also thanked family, friends and well-wishers for their support.

In a statement, Smollett’s attorneys Tina Glandian and Patricia Brown Holmes said his record had now “been wiped clean of the filing of this tragic complaint against him”.

Prosecutors have given no detailed explanation, but confirmed an “appropriate resolution” had been reached.

Smollett’s lawyers said it was the “only just result”.

“Jussie was attacked by two people he was unable to identify on 29 January,” they said. “He was a victim who was vilified and made to appear as a perpetrator as a result of false and inappropriate remarks made to the public, causing an inappropriate rush to judgement. (net)

CALIFORNIA - Cardi B has addressed a video which emerged showing her talking about drugging and robbing men during her time working as a stripper, saying she is “not proud” of her actions but she behaved that way “to survive”.

The Grammy-winning rapper could be seen discussing targeting men while working in New York in a three-year-old clip which resurfaced on social media at the weekend.

It led to the hashtag #SurvivingCardiB, a reference to the documentary Surviving R Kelly, as well as calls to boycott the star’s music.

In a post on Instagram, the 26year-old has now responded to the controversy, saying she did things in her past that “I felt I needed to do to make a living”.

She said she never claimed “to be perfect or come from a perfect world” or have a “perfect past”, adding “I always speak my truth”.

While some rappers glorify “murder, violence, drugs and robbing” in their music, she said she had chosen not to.

“I never glorified the things I brought

up in that live I never even put those things in my music because I’m not proud of it and feel a responsibility not to glorify it,” she wrote.

“I made the choices that I did at the time because I had very limited options.”

Cardi B, whose real name is Belcalis Almanzar, continued: “I was blessed to have been able to rise from that but so many women have not. Whether or not they were poor choices at the time I did what I had to do to survive.”

A truck driver barreled into a group of indigenous Guatemalans on Wednesday night, killing 18 before fleeing the scene as police began a manhunt. The incident occurred at the entry point to the western town of Nahuala, which has a population of around 65,000, most of whom are K’iche’ Maya.

A group of people had converged at the scene of another hit-and-run in which a local community leader was killed, when they in turn were hit by a truck with its lights off on a road without street lighting.

“In total there are 18 deaths that have been counted in this tragedy,” fire department spokesman Cecilio Chacaj told AFP, revising down a previous toll of 30 that he attributed to

early chaos on the scene where bodies were piled up on top of another.

Chacaj added the dead included three minors while 20 had been wounded, some seriously, and were being treated in hospitals.

The government announced three days of mourning from Thursday, while President Jimmy Morales tweeted: “We are currently coordinating actions to provide all

the support to the victims’ families.

My condolences.”

Chilling images broadcast on local television showed the victims’ bodies in their brightly colored clothing laid out in a line on the asphalt, as relatives cried out in anguish.

tion to capture the driver was now under way.

He added that investigators were initially prevented from getting to the scene by angry relatives but were given access after opening a dialogue with community leaders.

Local reports said the man killed in the first accident was a community leader and president of the state Council of Urban and Rural Development, though authorities have not confirmed this.

The semi-trailer did not have its lights on when it struck the group of people which may have been

why the driver did not spot them, while the highway was also unlit, according to local media.
