Bill Clinton repays a favor to Fleetwood Mac at MusiCares ceremony NEW YORK - Their 1977 song “Don’t Stop” helped power Bill Clinton into the White House in 1992, and on Friday it was the former U.S. president doing the honors for Fleetwood Mac. Clinton presented Fleetwood Mac with statuettes as the 2018 MusicCares honorees, making them the first band to win the annual award given to a musician for creative achievements and charitable work. Clinton chose the British-American band’s single “Don’t Stop” as the theme song for his 1992 presidential campaign, helping to revive their popularity and encouraging the fractious soft rock band to reunite for his inaugural ball in 1993. “They let me use it as a theme song and I have been trying to live by it ever since,” Clinton told the audience at Radio City Music Hall in New York. “I owe a great deal to all of them,” he added. Russian police detain opposition leader Navalny at protest
MOSCOW/YEKATERINBURG - Russian police wrestled opposition leader Alexei Navalny into a patrol wagon on Sunday, moments after he appeared at a rally to urge voters to boycott what he said would be a rigged presidential election in March.

porters showed. Navalny has been barred from running in the March 18 election which polls show incumbent president Vladimir Putin is on track to easily win. Though Navalny says he knows Putin will be re-elected, his boycott campaign is aimed at lowering voter turnout to try to take the shine off a Putin win. The Kremlin says the election will be fair. Affleck, 42, who won the best actor Oscar last year for his performance in the family drama “Manchester by the Sea,” was expected to present this year’s best actress award in keeping with Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences tradition. “We appreciate the decision to keep the focus on the show and on the great work of this year.” the academy spokeswoman said. A publicist for Affleck, Mara Buxbaum, confirmed that Affleck would not be attending this year’s ceremony, which is scheduled for March 4 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, but declined further comment. The ethics of medical personnel has come to public attention following an incident of a patient’s breast being inappropriately squeezed. Public confidence has again been shaken as a photo of a resident physician at Sanglah Hospital was photographed as he was playing games on his cell phone while treating a patient. The photo was uploaded to social media sites causing public outrage over his apparent lack of empathy for the patient being treated. Director of Sanglah Hospital, Wayan Sudana, said that on Wednesday night (Jan. 24) said that he had received a report from his staff about the photo and looked into the matter. “Apparently an intern was
playing games on his handphone in the presence of a patient, so I had the Director of Human Resources to investigate”, he explained. It was then ascertained that the resident physician was on duty at the ICU Burn Unit. “The physician had used his phone to report to his superior. Probably after sending the report, he opened the game app. in the presence of the patient. We will certainly handle this case:, he concluded. After confirming that it was a resident physician who had misbehaved, Sudana then contacted the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Udayana University. “We contacted the University because the medical student doing his residency here is under the authority of the Dean
of the Faculty of Medicine”, he explained. The management of the hospital agreed to impose sanctions on the resident physician who was summoned and reprimanded. The medical student then signed a statement stating he would not repeat the offensive action. His period of medical studies will also be extended. Sudiana emphasized that the regulations governing the conduct of medical personnel in hospital are clear and prohibit the use of handphones while providing medical service to patients. Hand-phones can only be used in the case when certain things need to be reported. “IN this case, the medical professional should do so in a specific
place – not in the presence of the patients and certainly not while providing medical service”, he said. Director of the Anesthesia Study Program in the Faculty of Medicine at Udayana University / Sanglah Hospital, Prof. Dr. Made Wiryana, said that the physician at issue is indeed a resident physician in charge of anesthesia and intensive therapy. His status is chief resident in charge of monitoring junior residents on night duty at Sanglah Hospital. “The resident was patrolling as there were many consultations in progress in a number of departments at the hospital. As chief resident he needs to use his hand-phone to consult with senior physicians.
When he arrived in the burn room, the junior residents were providing medical service. His mistake was to play a video game at that time”, explained Dr. Wiryana. Dr. Wiryana added that he and his staff are well aware that resident physicians are not allowed to play on their phones when on duty. “As coordinator of the study program, we summoned the resident physician in question and reprimanded his verbally for his inappropriate action as it violates the rules and can have a negative impact on the patient, the patient’s family and public confidence”, he said. After the meeting, it was decided that the chief resident physician’s studies would be extended for an additional month. (kmb42)

Broken down road replaced with bamboo bridge
AMLAPURA - Realizing that the government is overwhelmed to address many broken-down roads, the villagers of North Duda village, Selat, worked together to overcome the roads at their village. On Friday (Jan. 26), they worked together with the focus on building a bamboo bridge at the point of the collapsed road in the Panti River flow.

The road point collapsed as eroded by the cold lava flood of Mount Agung a few days after the first phreatic eruption on November 26, 2017. After the flash floods coinciding with the flash floods in the Yeh Sah River at Muncan Village, residents actually had time to build a similar bridge. The road point washed away by the cold lava flood is the access for children attending SMPN 3 Selat junior high school especially for the students originating from the western region of the river such as Geriana Kauh, Sukaluwih, Sebun, Abian Tiying hamlet and several other hamlets at Amerta Bhuana village, Selat. The 6-meter long bridge fully utilized bamboo construction donated by local residents. In addition to pedestrians, the simple bridge can also be passed by a motorcycle. The presence of the bridge is very helpful because the students going to SMPN 3 will no longer need to take alternative to Bangbang Biaung hamlet, Duda. “It can shorten about 3 km,” said one of the Geriana Kauh residents, I Kadek Arnawa, 30.
The construction of bamboo bridge also involved village apparatus assisted by village noncommissioned police and military officers at North Duda. Headman of Duda, I Wayan Darmadi, said the bridge also serves as a road access for Tukad Sabuh hamlet residents to go to their garden across the Panti River. “If possible, we hope the government to build a permanent one,” he said. Chief Executive of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Karangasem, I.B. Ketut Arimbawa, said the heavy rain and cold lava floods cut off the road access in many locations. The latest flood carrying the materials of Mount Agung cut off road access to Tunggul Besi Temple at Temukus, Besakih village, Rendang. Arimbawa acknowledged that the condition had a great impact on people’s activities. According to him, the BPBD together with Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency (PUPR) has checked to several locations. For now, the handling is made temporarily, while the permanent handling remains in the assessment. “Three days ago, we went to central Tianyar, Kubu. MANGUPURA — Disruption to clean water supply still happened to South Kuta area until Friday (Jan. 26). It has occurred since Sunday (Jan. 21) due to leakage of the pipe with diameter of 400 mm belonging to PDAM in the underpass project at the Ngurah Rai Statue intersection. The handling of this leakage is still in progress. When confirmed on Friday (Jan. 26), Director of Municipality Waterworks (PDAM) Tirta Mangutama, Ketut Golak, justified such condition. This time it remains in progress because the leakage of the pipe is large enough. In addition, position of the pipe is within four meters, slightly complicating the repair. Golak said the leakage was caused by the drilling of PLN’s vendor. As a result, this problem does not only harm the PDAM, but also
the PDAM’s customer. “The pipe leakage is at a depth of 4 meters. Now, we are still making coordination with PLN,” he said. Against the leakage of the pipe, Golak said that until now there is still disruption of clean water services in the area of South Kuta. To that end, he hoped people could understand this problem and the repair could be completed soon. “Too many external factors are disturbing, but the leakage happens while doing the activities to support the national project. We do not want to blame any others. Coordination and communication must be put forward,” he concluded. In addition to the pipe leakage, the disruption to clean water supply is also caused by weather factors. Previously, there was heavy rain bringing in mud and garbage from
the upstream areas that resulted in very high mud sediments in the source of raw water. When high sedimentation occurs, the clean water production will be disrupted. As a result, PDAM service becomes not optimal. “If the extreme weather is accompanied by high sedimentation, the processing pump is not strong enough to do production,” he explained. With this condition, there is a disruption of clean water supply and estimated to become normal again on Saturday (Jan. 27). Locations experiencing the disturbance are Kelan, Kedonganan, Jimbaran, Kori Nuansa, Taman Giri, Puri Nusa Dua, UPA, Sawangan, Jalan Pratama, ITDC, Taman Mumbul and surrounding areas. Activities of Mt. Agung decline, the elderly cannot calm down

AMLAPURA — Even though the activities of Mount Agung have declined, residents on the slopes of Mount Agung have not been able to calm down, let alone the elderly. Psychologically, the elderly are still not recovering from previous condition. Apparently they are still worried about the situation of Mount Agung after having seen and experienced directly the eruption in 1963. Their depression often triggers to eventually die. Dozens of death cases among refugees are dominated by the elderly. This was revealed when the Village Credit Agency (LPD) of Sibetan, Bebandem, held a free medical treatment centered in outermost courtyard of Tengah hamlet hall, Sibetan, on Friday (Jan. 26). Hundreds of residents dominated by the elderly as well as evacuees took their turns to visit the free medical service. Head of LPD Sibetan, Made Mastiawan, said that averagely the elderly admitted to be unable to calm down with the current situation. “The elderly here are depressed. Their psychological condition is much disturbed by the current situation. Nevertheless, until now our territory is still safe, ash rain only occurred for few times,” said Mastiawan. Free medical treatment in a series of the 27th anniversary of LPD Sibetan was welcomed enthusiastically by local residents and so were the evacuees. Local temple priests took advantage
of the free treatment to check up their health. “This is the first time of the anniversary of LPD to be filled with free medical services because it is currently needed very much by our residents,” Mastiawan said while adding that the program was held in cooperation with Bali Sari Ubud Foundation by deploying three doctors, four nurses and dozens of others. In addition to free treatment, it was also handed over the assistance in the form of hundreds of basic food packages to the elderly and people with disabilities. As planned, peak of the anniversary of LPD Sibetan will be held on February 22-23 marked with LPD extravaganza activities and delivery of scholarships to elementary, junior and senior high school students in the village of Sibetan. It started from the fear of garbage commonly found in the area of mangrove forest of Perancak Estuary. By involving the community, they install trash trap in the streams of Ijogading River named Mangrove Bin. It is a kind of floating tool functioned to collect upstream garbage to reduce the volume of garbage to mangrove area. “For nearly three months of trials, we found many things. One of them is the amount of trash successfully trapped by using this trap tool. Besides, it is also related
to river quality based on a number of parameters,” said CI Coordinator, Hanggar Prasetio, on Friday (Jan. 26). During the trials for three months, the garbage comprises 544.26 kilograms of natural waste and 230 kilograms of household waste. For this period, the monitoring and waste collection involved the community. Currently, the tool using simple buoy is perfected to accommodate the garbage in the river both during high tide and low tides. Perancak Estuary with its mangrove forest area is now very important. Although the mangrove area extends naturally to nine hectares since 2014, it has become a major problem. When the mangrove area is contaminated with garbage, it will have an impact on the growth of mangrove. In the meantime, Dr. Agung Yunanto from BPOL said the waste problem in these waters
is a global problem, including in Bali in particular. Based on the research, the impact is very large, especially on tourism in Bali like Kuta Beach. Actually, the garbage is not impossible to come from Jembrana drifted up to Kuta. The handling of garbage should be done thoroughly from the upstream to downstream. According to him, the effort made through this Mangrove Bin is one of the preventive measures. However, it will not work without public awareness and government support such as inter-regional mutual support. Afghan capital in shock after ambulance bomb kills over 100
KABUL - Kabul reacted in despair and fear on Sunday, a day after a suicide bomb killed more than 100 people and wounded at least 235 in the worst attack seen in the Afghan capital in months. There was a mix of helpless anger at the seemingly endless wave of attacks after an ambulance packed with explosives blew up in a crowded city street, with security officials warning that more attacks were possible. “How are we to live? Where should we go?” asked shopkeeper Mohammad Hanif, who was in his shop near the site of the explosion when it went off. “We have no security, we don’t have no proper government, what should we do?” Interior Minister Wais Barmak said the casualty toll had risen to at least 103 dead and 235 wounded. His release came hours after he told Reuters in an interview at Riyadh’s opulent Ritz-Carlton hotel that he expected to be cleared of any wrongdoing and be freed within days. A senior Saudi official said Prince Alwaleed was freed after he reached a financial settlement with the attorney general. “The attorney general has approved this morning the settlement that was reached with Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, and the prince returned home at 1100 a.m. (0800 GMT),” the official told Reuters, without giving details of the terms. The decision to free him, and the release of several other wellknown tycoons on Friday, suggested the main part of the corruption probe was winding down after it sent shockwaves through Saudi Arabia’s business and political establishment. In his first interview since being detained, conducted hours before his release, Prince Alwaleed told Reuters he maintained his innocence of any corruption in talks with the authorities. He said he expected to keep full control of his global investment firm Kingdom Holding Co without being required to hand assets to the state. He said he had been able to communicate with executives at his business while detained. The euro was up 0.3 percent against the greenback at $1.2432, after hitting a more than three-year high of $1.2536 on Thursday. “$1.25 in euro-dollar is a critical level and it’s got a lot of sticker shock associated with it,” said Greg Anderson, global head of FX strategy at BMO Capital Markets. “There were probably a lot of options barriers and lots of stops up there that people would love to take out. You would expect to see an acceleration in volatility,” he said. “We did have those comments, and it added to the drama,”

Jordan ends bread subsidy, doubling some prices, to help state finances
AMMAN - Jordan said a decision to end subsidies on staple pitta bread that will lift its prices by between 60 and 100 percent will take effect on Saturday, the first such step in over two decades to ease the country’s budget woes. The price of a kilo of white pitta bread was raised 60 percent to 0.40 dinars from 0.25 dinars and prices of large pita bread were nearly doubled. Other types of bread that most middle class Jordanians consume are not affected. Mechanism have set up to offset the impact on the poor by cash transfers. The move, which takes effect after midnight, is the first major increase since 1996. A move to raise prices then sparked civil unrest when the government was forced to push for it to comply with International Monetary Fund requirements for extending new credit. Protests also erupted in 2012 after the government cut fuel subsidies to secure an IMF loan. That loan was intended to rein in a budget deficit that threatened the country’s fiscal and monetary stability. The authorities have been saying bread subsidies were benefiting foreign workers and Syrian refugees living in the country and the money that was saved would be given to Jordanians in cash transfers. The government says bread prices - among the cheapest
regionally - had encouraged waste. It expects the move will reduce consumption. The bread move comes 10 days after Jordan’s cabinet announced a major package of IMF-guided tax hikes it says are needed to gradually lower public debt and rejuvenate an economy hit by regional conflict. Although the IMF didn’t seek lifting bread subsidies this time, it has long said Jordan’s costly subsidy system was increasingly untenable without large inflows of foreign capital or foreign aid. Tax hikes and subsidy cuts - highly unpopular - have been forced on the government as the country’s debt-to-gross-domesticproduct ratio has reached a record 95 percent, up from 71 percent in 2011.
After an IMF standby arrangement that brought some fiscal stability, Jordan agreed last year to a more ambitious three-year programme of long-delayed structural reforms to cut public debt to 77 percent of GDP by 2021. The debt has grown at least in part because successive governments have adopted expansionist fiscal policies characterised by job creation in the bloated public sector and by lavish subsidies for bread and other staple goods. But the economy has slowed, battered by the turmoil in neighbouring Syria and Iraq. Behind the abundance of durian production, the residents of Sidatapa village continue to preserve their unique rituals every harvest season. Residents offer durian through a yadnya or ritual known as ngaturan buah or presenting fruits. “This tradition is held on Sunday (Jan. 21) and continued on Wednesday (Jan. 24). Hundreds of people came to Bale Agung Temple. Each brought three durians. Women carried the durian by placing it in the bamboo basket, while the men took it by using a kisah (a kind of woven basket) made of coconut leaves. As noted, there are 835 families participating in the ritual. Each family head shall present at least three pieces of durian. So, there are totally at least 2,505 pieces of durian. Inevitably, this activity is similar to durian festival because the durians collected finally fill the temple area.
Secretary of Sidatapa customary village, Banjar, Made Parma, this tradition has been going on for generations. Possibly, it has existed since 735 Çaka or around 767 AD. There is no written evidence to corroborate this ritual. The ritual itself is a form of thanksgiving to God’s blessing that nourishes plants and gives results to people’s prosperity. “With this ceremony, our durians are expected to bear fruit densely in the future. After the ceremony at Bale Agung Temple, it is followed with ceremony in the garden and at home. People can also hold the ceremony as a form of gratitude in their home yard as long as it has been started from the Bale Agung Temple first,” he said. According to Parma, there is no specific time or date to organize this ritual. By and large, the ceremony is held when there are indications if
the harvest season comes. Having got the indications, village coordinator announces to all residents to carry out the ceremony of presenting fruits. In appropriate local tradition, presenting fruit ceremony will usually be organized for three days. On the first day, the people must bring three pieces of durian. If happening to have other fruits, they are allowed to collect them to the temple. People having mangosteen will commonly carry at least three kilograms. Meanwhile, those having rambutan will bring minimally three bunches of it. On the second day, people are required to bring two pieces of durian. Ultimately, on the third day they are only needed to bring one durian. People are well aware of the rituals, so that if they do not have fruit, they will buy to their neighbors. “People really do not dare to violate and they understand
very well that if by chance in the garden there is no fruit, they can buy or even ask to their relatives or neighbors,” he explained. Meanwhile, one of the villagers of Sidatapa, I Wayan Ariawan, said the ritual that cannot be found in other areas is worth developing as a tourist attraction. To that end, he
tried to pioneer how each of these durian ritual offerings can be made into festival event. In addition to preserving, visitors will be able to enjoy the durian produced by local farmers, so that it will have an impact on more profits for local people from the sales durian than usual. (kmb)

Wynn resigns as RNC finance chair after sexual misconduct allegations
WASHINGTON - Las Vegas casino mogul Steve Wynn resigned as finance chairman of the Republican Party’s fundraising arm on Saturday, a day after a newspaper reported that he routinely subjected women who worked for him to unwanted sexual advances. “Today I accepted Steve Wynn’s resignation as Republican National Committee finance chair,” RNC chair Ronna Romney McDaniel said in a statement. The billionaire has denied the accusations published by the Wall Street Journal as “preposterous” and said they were instigated by his ex-wife to seek advantage in their divorce lawsuit. But he said in a statement released on Saturday evening that he was resigning to avoid unnecessary distraction. He also thanked U.S. President Donald Trump for the job. “The unbelievable success we have achieved must continue,” the statement said. “The work we are doing to make America a better place is too important to be impaired by this distraction.” As recently as Friday night, Wynn associates were insisting he would fight the charges and remain at the RNC. Instead, he becomes the latest powerful man to pay a price for accusations of sexual misconduct in the United States. The 76-year-old founder, chairman and chief executive officer of Wynn Resorts Ltd, has been a prominent figure in the casino resort business and onetime rival of Trump. After previously seeking to appear nonpartisan, he threw his support behind Trump during the 2016 campaign and donated money to several Republican causes including the RNC. Trump called Wynn a “great friend” after he won the Nevada caucus in February 2016, and Wynn was named finance chairman of the committee after Trump became president. U.S. Representative Francis Rooney of Florida is being considered as a replacement, one Republican fundraiser said. The board of directors of Wynn Resorts said on Friday it had met to form a special committee consisting solely of independent directors to investigate the allegations reported by the Journal. The special investigation panel will be chaired by Patricia Mulroy, a member of the board’s corporate governance and compliance committees and a former member of the Nevada Gaming Commission, the board said in a statement. The Wall Street Journal said former and current company staff members it interviewed had accused Wynn of creating a hostile work environment for women and of regularly pressuring employees to perform sex acts. “The idea that I ever assaulted any woman is preposterous,” Wynn said in a statement on Friday. “The instigation of these accusations is the continued work of my ex-wife, Elaine Wynn, with whom I am involved in a terrible and nasty lawsuit in which she is seeking a revised divorce settlement.” A spokeswoman for Elaine Wynn, 75, declined comment on Friday, but her Washington-based attorney, James Cole, told Reuters the notion that his client fomented the allegations in the Journal article “is just not true.” After The New York Times revealed in October that Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein had paid off multiple sexual harassment accusers over decades, it unleashed a wave of accusations against the rich and powerful, leading to the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements demanding an end to impunity. TEGUCIGALPA - Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez called for unity on Saturday after a bitterly disputed election last year as he was sworn in for a second term, while police skirmished with protesters in the streets. Hernandez, a conservative supported by the United States, appeared set to lose the Nov. 26 election until an abrupt halt in the vote count and a shift in the results took victory away from his center-left rival, Salvador Nasralla. Allegations of fraud sparked protests that killed more than 30 people in the impoverished Central American country, which has also been plagued by battles between security forces, local gangs and drug traffickers. As Hernandez spoke at a stadium at his swearing-in, supporters and troops chanted “unity” and waved the blue and white Honduran flag. “If a house is divided against itself, it cannot stand,” he said, quoting the New Testament. “I promise to carry out a process of reconciliation among all Hondurans.” On Saturday, thousands of demonstrators clashed with
troops and police, who fired tear gas to disperse the crowd that had gathered a couple of miles from the stadium where Hernandez took office. Nasralla, a sportscaster and game show host, and his ally Manuel Zelaya, a former leftist president who was overthrown in a 2009 coup, led demonstrators on Saturday. Antonio Tejada, a 33-year-old laborer at the protests, said Hernandez “had stolen the presidency against the will of the people.” “We will keep fighting until he is out of power,” he said. The Organization of American States said the election was marred by irregularities and called for a new vote. But the result was eventually ratified by the country’s electoral tribunal and both Mexico and the United States backed the incumbent. After police dispersed the mass rally in the capital, smaller
groups of protesters moved into the narrow streets of the central district where they threw stones at security forces who fired back rounds of tear gas. Security forces were sent to break down blockades on highways mounted by demonstrators in four parts of the country and five people had been arrested after a tractor trailer was set on fire, a police spokesman said. Following a contentious decision by the Supreme Court in 2015, Hernandez is the first president to be re-elected since the end of military rule nearly four decades ago. Hernandez has pledged to maintain a hard-line strategy criticized by human rights groups in his fight against the country’s gangs. Homosexuality is not regulated by law in Indonesia, except in Aceh province where Islamic law bans same-sex relations. But the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation has seen a rise in hostility toward the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community, with activists saying their rights are not being adequately protected by the state. “The survey finds that, generally, the Indonesian public views the LGBT (community) negatively,” the Saiful Mujani Research Centre said on its website. “But the public is also of the view that the LGBT community has the right to live in Indonesia and that the government should protect them like other citizens.” There are sizeable minorities of Christians, Hindus, and those who adhere to native beliefs among Indonesia’s 250 million people. Indonesian police have over the last few years stepped up raids targeting “spas” or what they call “gay sex parties” and charged many of those involved with violating strict pornography laws. This has raised alarm bells among rights activists who say the law is being used to unfairly target LGBT individuals. More than 300 people were arrested in 2017 for alleged LGBT-behaviour, according to Human Rights Watch. “The police should stop criminalising LGBT individuals and... instead protect them principally
in their private spaces from harassment and intimidation,” said Andreas Harsono of Human Rights Watch. The Constitutional Court last month struck down a petition by a conservative group to ban all consensual extramarital sex including same-sex relations. But the group intends to lobby parliament as politicians deliberate revisions to the criminal code. The pollster surveyed a total of 1,220 people of various religious backgrounds across Indonesia between March 2016 and December 2017 and found that 87 percent of them considered the LGBT community a “threat to private or public life”. A similar proportion of people in the survey disagreed that an LGBT individual should be able to hold a leading public office, and said that they believed their religion prohibited LGBT activity. The survey also found that around half the respondents did not know the meaning of the term “LGBT”, which was used in all survey questions. The results were based on those who did. Half of those who were aware of the term said the government should protect the LGBT community. A Pew Research Center survey found in 2013 that around 93 percent of Indonesians believed society should not accept homosexuality.(rtr)

On usual days, the number of tourist visits only reaches 10 to 20 people. However, this number will increase on weekends that can reach 30 to 80 people. Then, on holidays like Galungan and Kuningan, Christmas and New Year and other school holidays, visitors will be booming. “On New Year 2018 holiday, the tourist visit was dominated by local people. Sandgren had been accused of homophobia and racism for comments he made in the past on social media, which have since resurfaced during his run to the Australian Open quarter-finals where he lost to South Korean Chung Hyeon. CALIFORNIA - American tennis player Tennys Sandgren has denied holding right-wing activist views and denounced any implied association with those who do. Sandgren had been accused of homophobia and racism for comments he made in the past on social media, which have since resurfaced during his run to the Australian Open quarter-finals where he lost to South Korean Chung Hyeon. Former world number one Serena Williams was among people who called for Sandgren to apologise for his remarks, particularly one in which he described a visit to a gay club in 2012 as having “left his eyes bleeding”. In a long statement on Saturday
on his Twitter account, Sandgren apologised for his past comments and explained why he had appeared to follow politically right-wing profiles. “Let me emphatically say that I do not hold any alt right views, and I denounce any implied association with that group,” Sandgren wrote. “I unequivocally believe in the equality of all peoples as made in the image of God.” The 26-year-old, who broke into the ATP Top 100 late last year, said he was sorry. “I followed and interacted with a wide variety of people from different backgrounds and ideologies from the right and left of the political spectrum,” he wrote.

Wynn resigns as RNC finance chair after sexual misconduct allegations
WASHINGTON - Las Vegas casino mogul Steve Wynn resigned as finance chairman of the Republican Party’s fundraising arm on Saturday, a day after a newspaper reported that he routinely subjected women who worked for him to unwanted sexual advances. “Today I accepted Steve Wynn’s resignation as Republican National Committee finance chair,” RNC chair Ronna Romney McDaniel said in a statement. The billionaire has denied the accusations published by the Wall Street Journal as “preposterous” and said they were instigated by his ex-wife to seek advantage in their divorce lawsuit. But he said in a statement released on Saturday evening that he was resigning to avoid unnecessary distraction. He also thanked U.S. President Donald Trump for the job. “The unbelievable success we have achieved must continue,” the statement said. “The work we are doing to make America a better place is too important to be impaired by this distraction.” As recently as Friday night, Wynn associates were insisting he would fight the charges and remain at the RNC. Instead, he becomes the latest powerful man to pay a price for accusations of sexual misconduct in the United States. The 76-year-old founder, chairman and chief executive officer of Wynn Resorts Ltd, has been a prominent figure in the casino resort business and onetime rival of Trump. After previously seeking to appear nonpartisan, he threw his support behind Trump during the 2016 campaign and donated money to several Republican causes including the RNC. Trump called Wynn a “great friend” after he won the Nevada caucus in February 2016, and Wynn was named finance chairman of the committee after Trump became president. U.S. Representative Francis Rooney of Florida is being considered as a replacement, one Republican fundraiser said. The board of directors of Wynn Resorts said on Friday it had met to form a special committee consisting solely of independent directors to investigate the allegations reported by the Journal. The special investigation panel will be chaired by Patricia Mulroy, a member of the board’s corporate governance and compliance committees and a former member of the Nevada Gaming Commission, the board said in a statement. The Wall Street Journal said former and current company staff members it interviewed had accused Wynn of creating a hostile work environment for women and of regularly pressuring employees to perform sex acts. “The idea that I ever assaulted any woman is preposterous,” Wynn said in a statement on Friday. “The instigation of these accusations is the continued work of my ex-wife, Elaine Wynn, with whom I am involved in a terrible and nasty lawsuit in which she is seeking a revised divorce settlement.” A spokeswoman for Elaine Wynn, 75, declined comment on Friday, but her Washington-based attorney, James Cole, told Reuters the notion that his client fomented the allegations in the Journal article “is just not true.” After The New York Times revealed in October that Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein had paid off multiple sexual harassment accusers over decades, it unleashed a wave of accusations against the rich and powerful, leading to the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements demanding an end to impunity. Honduran president sworn in amid protests after election chaos
TEGUCIGALPA - Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez called for unity on Saturday after a bitterly disputed election last year as he was sworn in for a second term, while police skirmished with protesters in the streets. Hernandez, a conservative supported by the United States, appeared set to lose the Nov. 26 election until an abrupt halt in the vote count and a shift in the results took victory away from his center-left rival, Salvador Nasralla. Allegations of fraud sparked protests that killed more than 30 people in the impoverished Central American country, which has also been plagued by battles between security forces, local gangs and drug traffickers. As Hernandez spoke at a stadium at his swearing-in, supporters and troops chanted “unity” and waved the blue and white Honduran flag. “If a house is divided against itself, it cannot stand,” he said, quoting the New Testament. “I promise to carry out a process of reconciliation among all Hondurans.” On Saturday, thousands of demonstrators clashed with
troops and police, who fired tear gas to disperse the crowd that had gathered a couple of miles from the stadium where Hernandez took office. Nasralla, a sportscaster and game show host, and his ally Manuel Zelaya, a former leftist president who was overthrown in a 2009 coup, led demonstrators on Saturday. Antonio Tejada, a 33-year-old laborer at the protests, said Hernandez “had stolen the presidency against the will of the people.” “We will keep fighting until he is out of power,” he said. The Organization of American States said the election was marred by irregularities and called for a new vote. But the result was eventually ratified by the country’s electoral tribunal and both Mexico and the United States backed the incumbent. After police dispersed the mass rally in the capital, smaller
groups of protesters moved into the narrow streets of the central district where they threw stones at security forces who fired back rounds of tear gas. Security forces were sent to break down blockades on highways mounted by demonstrators in four parts of the country and five people had been arrested after a tractor trailer was set on fire, a police spokesman said. Following a contentious decision by the Supreme Court in 2015, Hernandez is the first president to be re-elected since the end of military rule nearly four decades ago. Hernandez has pledged to maintain a hard-line strategy criticized by human rights groups in his fight against the country’s gangs. Homosexuality is not regulated by law in Indonesia, except in Aceh province where Islamic law bans same-sex relations. But the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation has seen a rise in hostility toward the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community, with activists saying their rights are not being adequately protected by the state. “The survey finds that, generally, the Indonesian public views the LGBT (community) negatively,” the Saiful Mujani Research Centre said on its website. “But the public is also of the view that the LGBT community has the right to live in Indonesia and that the government should protect them like other citizens.” There are sizeable minorities of Christians, Hindus, and those who adhere to native beliefs among Indonesia’s 250 million people. Indonesian police have over the last few years stepped up raids targeting “spas” or what they call “gay sex parties” and charged many of those involved with violating strict pornography laws. This has raised alarm bells among rights activists who say the law is being used to unfairly target LGBT individuals. More than 300 people were arrested in 2017 for alleged LGBT-behaviour, according to Human Rights Watch. “The police should stop criminalising LGBT individuals and... instead protect them principally
in their private spaces from harassment and intimidation,” said Andreas Harsono of Human Rights Watch. The Constitutional Court last month struck down a petition by a conservative group to ban all consensual extramarital sex including same-sex relations. But the group intends to lobby parliament as politicians deliberate revisions to the criminal code. The pollster surveyed a total of 1,220 people of various religious backgrounds across Indonesia between March 2016 and December 2017 and found that 87 percent of them considered the LGBT community a “threat to private or public life”. A similar proportion of people in the survey disagreed that an LGBT individual should be able to hold a leading public office, and said that they believed their religion prohibited LGBT activity. The survey also found that around half the respondents did not know the meaning of the term “LGBT”, which was used in all survey questions. The results were based on those who did. Half of those who were aware of the term said the government should protect the LGBT community. A Pew Research Center survey found in 2013 that around 93 percent of Indonesians believed society should not accept homosexuality.(rtr)

The dollar slipped to a session low against the Japanese yen after Bank of Japan Governor Haruhiko Kuroda said the central bank expects the economy to continue growing at a moderate pace and inflationary expectations are picking up slightly. The dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, was down 0.44 percent at 89.002 and on track for a weekly fall of 1.7 percent, its worst performance since May. President Donald Trump’s comments on Thursday that he wanted a “strong dollar,” a day after Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said a weaker greenback would help U.S. trade balances in the short term, failed to put a lid on volatility and keep dollar bears in check. The euro was up 0.3 percent against the greenback at $1.2432, after hitting a more than three-year high of $1.2536 on Thursday. “$1.25 in euro-dollar is a critical level and it’s got a lot of sticker shock associated with it,” said Greg Anderson, global head of FX strategy at BMO Capital Markets. “There were probably a lot of options barriers and lots of stops up there that people would love to take out. You would expect to see an acceleration in volatility,” he said. “We did have those comments, and it added to the drama,”

Jordan ends bread subsidy, doubling some prices, to help state finances
AMMAN - Jordan said a decision to end subsidies on staple pitta bread that will lift its prices by between 60 and 100 percent will take effect on Saturday, the first such step in over two decades to ease the country’s budget woes. The price of a kilo of white pitta bread was raised 60 percent to 0.40 dinars from 0.25 dinars and prices of large pita bread were nearly doubled. Other types of bread that most middle class Jordanians consume are not affected. Mechanism have set up to offset the impact on the poor by cash transfers. The move, which takes effect after midnight, is the first major increase since 1996. A move to raise prices then sparked civil unrest when the government was forced to push for it to comply with International Monetary Fund requirements for extending new credit. Protests also erupted in 2012 after the government cut fuel subsidies to secure an IMF loan. That loan was intended to rein in a budget deficit that threatened the country’s fiscal and monetary stability. The authorities have been saying bread subsidies were benefiting foreign workers and Syrian refugees living in the country and the money that was saved would be given to Jordanians in cash transfers. The government says bread prices - among the cheapest
regionally - had encouraged waste. It expects the move will reduce consumption. The bread move comes 10 days after Jordan’s cabinet announced a major package of IMF-guided tax hikes it says are needed to gradually lower public debt and rejuvenate an economy hit by regional conflict. Although the IMF didn’t seek lifting bread subsidies this time, it has long said Jordan’s costly subsidy system was increasingly untenable without large inflows of foreign capital or foreign aid. Tax hikes and subsidy cuts - highly unpopular - have been forced on the government as the country’s debt-to-gross-domesticproduct ratio has reached a record 95 percent, up from 71 percent in 2011.
After an IMF standby arrangement that brought some fiscal stability, Jordan agreed last year to a more ambitious three-year programme of long-delayed structural reforms to cut public debt to 77 percent of GDP by 2021. The debt has grown at least in part because successive governments have adopted expansionist fiscal policies characterised by job creation in the bloated public sector and by lavish subsidies for bread and other staple goods. But the economy has slowed, battered by the turmoil in neighbouring Syria and Iraq. Behind the abundance of durian production, the residents of Sidatapa village continue to preserve their unique rituals every harvest season. Residents offer durian through a yadnya or ritual known as ngaturan buah or presenting fruits. “This tradition is held on Sunday (Jan. 21) and continued on Wednesday (Jan. 24). Hundreds of people came to Bale Agung Temple. Each brought three durians. Women carried the durian by placing it in the bamboo basket, while the men took it by using a kisah (a kind of woven basket) made of coconut leaves. As noted, there are 835 families participating in the ritual. Each family head shall present at least three pieces of durian. So, there are totally at least 2,505 pieces of durian. Inevitably, this activity is similar to durian festival because the durians collected finally fill the temple area.
Secretary of Sidatapa customary village, Banjar, Made Parma, this tradition has been going on for generations. Possibly, it has existed since 735 Çaka or around 767 AD. There is no written evidence to corroborate this ritual. The ritual itself is a form of thanksgiving to God’s blessing that nourishes plants and gives results to people’s prosperity. “With this ceremony, our durians are expected to bear fruit densely in the future. After the ceremony at Bale Agung Temple, it is followed with ceremony in the garden and at home. People can also hold the ceremony as a form of gratitude in their home yard as long as it has been started from the Bale Agung Temple first,” he said. According to Parma, there is no specific time or date to organize this ritual. By and large, the ceremony is held when there are indications if
the harvest season comes. Having got the indications, village coordinator announces to all residents to carry out the ceremony of presenting fruits. In appropriate local tradition, presenting fruit ceremony will usually be organized for three days. On the first day, the people must bring three pieces of durian. If happening to have other fruits, they are allowed to collect them to the temple. People having mangosteen will commonly carry at least three kilograms. Meanwhile, those having rambutan will bring minimally three bunches of it. On the second day, people are required to bring two pieces of durian. Ultimately, on the third day they are only needed to bring one durian. People are well aware of the rituals, so that if they do not have fruit, they will buy to their neighbors. “People really do not dare to violate and they understand
very well that if by chance in the garden there is no fruit, they can buy or even ask to their relatives or neighbors,” he explained. Meanwhile, one of the villagers of Sidatapa, I Wayan Ariawan, said the ritual that cannot be found in other areas is worth developing as a tourist attraction. To that end, he
tried to pioneer how each of these durian ritual offerings can be made into festival event. In addition to preserving, visitors will be able to enjoy the durian produced by local farmers, so that it will have an impact on more profits for local people from the sales durian than usual. (kmb)

Head of LPD Sibetan, Made Mastiawan, said that averagely the elderly admitted to be unable to calm down with the current situation. “The elderly here are depressed. Their psychological condition is much disturbed by the current situation. Nevertheless, until now our territory is still safe, ash rain only occurred for few times,” said Mastiawan. Free medical treatment in a series of the 27th anniversary of LPD Sibetan was welcomed enthusiastically by local residents and so were the evacuees. Local temple priests took advantage

area. So, it does not only pollute the sea, but also mangrove area becoming the habitat of swamp animals. These conditions draw the intention of a number of parties to overcome this. One of the efforts is made by Conservation International (CI) Indonesia with the Center for Marine Research and Observation (BPOL) of Budeng since this year. It started from the fear of garbage commonly found in the area of mangrove forest of Perancak Estuary. By involving the community, they install trash trap in the streams of Ijogading River named Mangrove Bin. It is a kind of floating tool functioned to collect upstream garbage to reduce the volume of garbage to mangrove area. “For nearly three months of trials, we found many things. One of them is the amount of trash successfully trapped by using this trap tool. Besides, it is also related
to river quality based on a number of parameters,” said CI Coordinator, Hanggar Prasetio, on Friday (Jan. 26). During the trials for three months, the garbage comprises 544.26 kilograms of natural waste and 230 kilograms of household waste. For this period, the monitoring and waste collection involved the community. Currently, the tool using simple buoy is perfected to accommodate the garbage in the river both during high tide and low tides. Perancak Estuary with its mangrove forest area is now very important. Although the mangrove area extends naturally to nine hectares since 2014, it has become a major problem. When the mangrove area is contaminated with garbage, it will have an impact on the growth of mangrove. In the meantime, Dr. Agung Yunanto from BPOL said the waste problem in these waters
is a global problem, including in Bali in particular. Based on the research, the impact is very large, especially on tourism in Bali like Kuta Beach. Actually, the garbage is not impossible to come from Jembrana drifted up to Kuta. The handling of garbage should be done thoroughly from the upstream to downstream. KABUL - Kabul reacted in despair and fear on Sunday, a day after a suicide bomb killed more than 100 people and wounded at least 235 in the worst attack seen in the Afghan capital in months. There was a mix of helpless anger at the seemingly endless wave of attacks after an ambulance packed with explosives blew up in a crowded city street, with security officials warning that more attacks were possible. “How are we to live? Where should we go?” asked shopkeeper Mohammad Hanif, who was in his shop near the site of the explosion when it went off. “We have no security, we don’t have no proper government, what should we do?” Interior Minister Wais Barmak said the casualty toll had risen to at least 103 dead and 235 wounded. He said at least two vehicles painted as ambulances were involved in the attack, one of which blew up at when

A senior Saudi official said Prince Alwaleed was freed after he reached a financial settlement with the attorney general. “The attorney general has approved this morning the settlement that was reached with Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, and the prince returned home at 1100 a.m. (0800 GMT),” the official told Reuters, without giving details of the terms. The decision to free him, and the release of several other wellknown tycoons on Friday, suggested the main part of the corruption probe was winding down after it sent shockwaves through Saudi Arabia’s business and political establishment. In his first interview since being detained, conducted hours before his release, Prince Alwaleed told Reuters he maintained his innocence of any corruption in talks with the authorities. The 6-meter long bridge fully utilized bamboo construction donated by local residents. In addition to pedestrians, the simple bridge can also be passed by a motorcycle. The presence of the bridge is very helpful because the students going to SMPN 3 will no longer need to take alternative to Bangbang Biaung hamlet, Duda. “It can shorten about 3 km,” said one of the Geriana Kauh residents, I Kadek Arnawa, 30.
The construction of bamboo bridge also involved village apparatus assisted by village noncommissioned police and military officers at North Duda. Headman of Duda, I Wayan Darmadi, said the bridge also serves as a road access for Tukad Sabuh hamlet residents to go to their garden across the Panti River. “If possible, we hope the government to build a permanent one,” he said. Chief Executive of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Karangasem, I.B. Ketut Arimbawa, said the heavy rain and cold lava floods cut off the road access in many locations. The latest flood carrying the materials of Mount Agung cut off road access to Tunggul Besi Temple at Temukus, Besakih village, Rendang. Arimbawa acknowledged that the condition had a great impact on people’s activities. According to him, the BPBD together with Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency (PUPR) has checked to several locations. For now, the handling is made temporarily, while the permanent handling remains in the assessment. “Three days ago, we went to central Tianyar, Kubu. MANGUPURA — Disruption to clean water supply still happened to South Kuta area until Friday (Jan. 26). It has occurred since Sunday (Jan. 21) due to leakage of the pipe with diameter of 400 mm belonging to PDAM in the underpass project at the Ngurah Rai Statue intersection. The handling of this leakage is still in progress. When confirmed on Friday (Jan. 26), Director of Municipality Waterworks (PDAM) Tirta Mangutama, Ketut Golak, justified such condition. This time it remains in progress because the leakage of the pipe is large enough. In addition, position of the pipe is within four meters, slightly complicating the repair. Golak said the leakage was caused by the drilling of PLN’s vendor. As a result, this problem does not only harm the PDAM, but also
the PDAM’s customer. “The pipe leakage is at a depth of 4 meters. Now, we are still making coordination with PLN,” he said. Against the leakage of the pipe, Golak said that until now there is still disruption of clean water services in the area of South Kuta. To that end, he hoped people could understand this problem and the repair could be completed soon. “Too many external factors are disturbing, but the leakage happens while doing the activities to support the national project. We do not want to blame any others. Coordination and communication must be put forward,” he concluded. In addition to the pipe leakage, the disruption to clean water supply is also caused by weather factors. Previously, there was heavy rain bringing in mud and garbage from
the upstream areas that resulted in very high mud sediments in the source of raw water. When high sedimentation occurs, the clean water production will be disrupted. As a result, PDAM service becomes not optimal. “If the extreme weather is accompanied by high sedimentation, the processing pump is not strong enough to do production,” he explained. With this condition, there is a disruption of clean water supply and estimated to become normal again on Saturday (Jan. 27). Locations experiencing the disturbance are Kelan, Kedonganan, Jimbaran, Kori Nuansa, Taman Giri, Puri Nusa Dua, UPA, Sawangan, Jalan Pratama, ITDC, Taman Mumbul and surrounding areas. The ethics of medical personnel has come to public attention following an incident of a patient’s breast being inappropriately squeezed. Public confidence has again been shaken as a photo of a resident physician at Sanglah Hospital was photographed as he was playing games on his cell phone while treating a patient. The photo was uploaded to social media sites causing public outrage over his apparent lack of empathy for the patient being treated. Director of Sanglah Hospital, Wayan Sudana, said that on Wednesday night (Jan. 24) said that he had received a report from his staff about the photo and looked into the matter. “Apparently an intern was
playing games on his handphone in the presence of a patient, so I had the Director of Human Resources to investigate”, he explained. It was then ascertained that the resident physician was on duty at the ICU Burn Unit. “The physician had used his phone to report to his superior. Probably after sending the report, he opened the game app. in the presence of the patient. We will certainly handle this case:, he concluded. After confirming that it was a resident physician who had misbehaved, Sudana then contacted the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Udayana University. “We contacted the University because the medical student doing his residency here is under the authority of the Dean
of the Faculty of Medicine”, he explained. The management of the hospital agreed to impose sanctions on the resident physician who was summoned and reprimanded. The medical student then signed a statement stating he would not repeat the offensive action. His period of medical studies will also be extended. Sudiana emphasized that the regulations governing the conduct of medical personnel in hospital are clear and prohibit the use of handphones while providing medical service to patients. Hand-phones can only be used in the case when certain things need to be reported. “IN this case, the medical professional should do so in a specific
place – not in the presence of the patients and certainly not while providing medical service”, he said. Director of the Anesthesia Study Program in the Faculty of Medicine at Udayana University / Sanglah Hospital, Prof. Dr. Made Wiryana, said that the physician at issue is indeed a resident physician in charge of anesthesia and intensive therapy. His status is chief resident in charge of monitoring junior residents on night duty at Sanglah Hospital. “The resident was patrolling as there were many consultations in progress in a number of departments at the hospital. As chief resident he needs to use his hand-phone to consult with senior physicians.
When he arrived in the burn room, the junior residents were providing medical service. His mistake was to play a video game at that time”, explained Dr. Wiryana. Dr. Wiryana added that he and his staff are well aware that resident physicians are not allowed to play on their phones when on duty. “As coordinator of the study program, we summoned the resident physician in question and reprimanded his verbally for his inappropriate action as it violates the rules and can have a negative impact on the patient, the patient’s family and public confidence”, he said.
