Mariah Carey Cancels Three More Christmas Concerts Due to Health Concerns

LOS ANGELES - Mariah Carey is taking a brief respite before setting out on her holiday concerts. The singer, 47, announced she would be resting due to doctor’s orders, which led to a cancellation of three more of her Christmas concerts. “I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving with loved ones; it’s certainly nice to remember what we are grateful for!” she wrote on Instagram. “Like most, I’m thankful for my overall health… for which I need a bit more time to get right. Doctors have ordered a few extra days of rest before I can finally fly to New York and take the stage for my Christmas Tour.” She continued, “While this news disappoints me to share, I am grateful to be on the mend and for the support from all of you – it means the world to me! See you from the stage soon darlings! ?, Mariah” Carey revealed the canceled dated on her website — Nov. 27, Nov. 28 and Dec. 1. Her tour will resume with her New York date’s at the Beacon Theatre – Dec. 2, 4 and 5 – will be followed by three shows in Europe before continuing on to Las Vegas for five shows at The Colosseum at Caesar’s Palace. In mid-November, the singer canceled her first few “All I Want for Christmas Is You” concerts due to illness. “Lambs! Just in time for the holiday gift-giving season, it seems I’ve received a present of my own; a lovely upper respiratory infection after last week’s flu. Bleak!” she wrote in a statement posted to her Twitter account. “You know there is nothing I love more than celebrating the holidays with my festive Christmas show, but I have to take my doctor’s orders and rest until he says I can sing on stage.” “Until then, unfortunately, I have to cancel the first several shows of my upcoming Christmas tour. LOS ANGELES - Disney-Pixar’s “Coco” handily won the Thanksgiving holiday box office over the second weekend of Warner Bros.-DC Entertainment’s “Justice League,” with $71.2 million at 3,987 North American sites during the Wednesday-Sunday period. “Justice League” pulled in $60 million at 4,051 locations during the same timeframe. The superhero action-adventure, the fifth in the DC Extended Universe, has totaled $172 million in its first 10 days. “Coco” posted for the third-best Thanksgiving holiday opening ever, trailing three other Disney titles -- “Frozen” with $93 million in 2013, “Moana” with $82 million in 2017 and “Toy Story 3” with $80 million in 2010. Audiences surveyed by comScore’s PostTrak gave “Coco” strong ratings with 66% calling it “excellent,” and another 23% rating it “very good.” Surveys also showed 77% of viewers saying they would “definitely recommend” the movie to friends and 20% saying they would watch it again in a theater. “Coco,” directed by Lee Unkrich and co-directed by Adrian Molina,

is based on the traditions surrounding the Day of the Dead holiday in Mexico and centers on a 12-yearold boy who dreams of becoming a musician and explores his family history in the Land of the Dead. The studio has not released a price for the movie. Indonesia orders immediate evacuation as highest alert issued for Bali volcano

DENPASAR - Indonesia closed the airport on the tourist island of Bali on Monday and ordered 100,000 residents living near a glowing volcano spewing columns of ash to evacuate immediately, warning that the first major eruption in 54 years could be “imminent”. The airport was closed for 24 hours from Monday morning, disrupting 445 flights and some 59,000 passengers, after Mount Agung, which killed hundreds of people in 1963, sent volcanic ash high into the sky, and officials said cancellations could be extended. “Plumes of smoke are occasionally accompanied by explosive eruptions and the sound of weak blasts that can be heard up to 12 km (7 miles) from the peak,” the Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said in a statement after raising the alert from three to its highest level of four. “The potential for a larger eruption is imminent,” it said, referring to a visible glow of magma at Mount Agung’s peak overnight, and warning residents to evacuate a danger zone at a radius of 8-10

km (5-6 miles). Sutopo, a BNPB spokesman, said there had been no casualties so far and 40,000 people had left the area, but tens of thousands still needed to move. Video footage shared by the agency showed volcanic mud flows (lahar) on the mountainside. Lahar carrying mud and large boulders can destroy houses, bridges and roads in its path. Bali, famous for its surf, beaches and temples, attracted nearly 5 million visitors last year, and its

airport serves as a transport hub for the chain of islands in Indonesia’s eastern archipelago. But tourism has slumped in parts of Bali since September when Agung’s volcanic tremors began to increase and the alert level was raised to maximum before being lowered in October when seismic activity calmed. “I’m not worried (but) my friends in Russia are a little bit,” said a Russian tourist, who only wanted to be identified as Dmitry, at an observation post in Rendang in Bali’s east.

Agung rises majestically over eastern Bali to a height of just over 3,000 metres (9,800 feet). Northeastern Bali is relatively undeveloped compared to the more heavily populated southern tourist hub of Kuta-Seminyak-Nusa Dua.

EXPLOSIVE ERUPTION Indonesia’s Vulcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Centre (PVMBG), which is using drones, satellite imagery and other equipment, said predictions were difficult in the absence of instrumental recordings from the last eruption 54 years ago. In 1963, an eruption of Agung killed more than 1,000 people and razed several villages by hurling out pyroclastic material, hot ash, lava and lahar.

Recordings now show the northeast area of Agung’s peak has swollen in recent weeks “indicating there is fairly strong pressure toward the surface”, PVMBG said. It warned that if a similar eruption occurred, it could send rocks bigger than fist-size up to 8 km (5 miles) from the summit and volcanic gas to a distance of 10 km (6 miles) within three minutes. Overly erotic Joged Bumbung disturbs public order

DENPASAR - Overly erotic or ‘porn style’ Joged Bumbung is clearly contrary to the aesthetics and ethics of Balinese dance. Not only does this style of joged disturb public order could also threaten the status of Joged Bumbung as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage. “It is necessary to prohibit ‘pornographic style joged’ as it disturbs public order. Besides it is not good for the moral education of children and teenagers who see it. Balinese dance does not have any erotic or pornographic dances – let alone dances that involved removing garments”, said the humanist I Made Bandem when contacted on Sunday (Nov. 26). According to Bandem, the Governor of Bali’s Circular No. 6393/2016 gives legal power to ban performances of ‘pornographic joged’. The regents / mayor as well as the District Cultural Office, Customary Village General Assembly (MUDP), chief sof customary villages and the Bali Police should take immediate action in enforcing the gubernatorial circular. The videos however can cannot be taken down without the approval of Goolgle and Youtube. Allowing ‘porn joged’ to be widely shared on the internet could threaten Joged Bumbung’s status as a intangible cultural heritage (UNESCO). “Surely we could be reprimanded by UNESCO because our task is to glorify our traditional arts. Revenue from IMTA decreases

Denpasar - Revenue from Expatriate Employment Pass (IMTA) is targeted to reach IDR 17 billion by the end of 2017. This target is less than last year’s target of IDR 2 billion. The Government of Bali’s Manpower and Energy and Mineral Resources (ERM) says that this indicates a success in that strategic job positions are increasingly being filled by the local workforce. “Actually we do not hope for increased income from the IMTAs as this would indicate that job positions in Bali are being filled by foreign workers. The current decline in income form IMTA indicated that we have been successful in having more jobs filled by local workers”, said Head of Bali Manpower and ERM, Ni Luh Made Wiratmi, recently. According to Wiratmi, the nearly 25 percent decline in IMTA income is also due to district 1 municipal regulation concerning IMTA extensions. Foreign workers who only work in one district apply for their IMTA in that district, however those who work across districts1municipality apply for their permits from the the province.

“In the past, there were about 3,000 foreign workers but this has gone down about 25 percent to 2000 workers. There is a rule about transfer of knowledge, whereby every foreign worker but be accompanied by at least one Indonesian worker”, she explained. Wiratmi added companies must pay IDR 15 million a month for IMTAs but in fact Indonesian workers – Balinese included, are no less intelligent or competent. If companies hire Indonesian workers instead, they do not have to apply for and pay for IMTAs nor pay foreign workers large salaries. “If we want to show appreciation for our own people and our products, why it is so difficult? Investment is a different matter and there are rules governing this. But if it is just a matter of hiring expensive foreign workers, it is better to hire Indonesian workers that are just as competent, skilled, experienced and in no way inferior to foreign workers”, she said. According to experience of 1963, big eruption takes a month

AMLAPURA - According to Head of Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation, I Gede Suantika, Mount Agung’s recent volcanic activity shows smoke wafting thicker and higher out of the crater, energy pressure getting stronger and the intrusion of lava at the bottom of the crater increasing in volume. “We still hope that there will only be an effusive eruption which means that the lava filling the bottom of the volcano spills downwards. But we are concerned about the possibility of a sudden addition of volume discharge coming out in a short amount of time as the lave channel is quite small. This would likely cause a big eruption. This is what we are worried about”, said Suantika. Suantika predicts that as greater amounts of smoke and ash leave the crater, the hole at the bottom of the crater will be destroyed and new holes created. In 1963, said

Suantika, it took one month of smoke and ash coming out of the mountain for the biggest eruption to occur. He added that he is confident that at that time the crater was not as deep as it is now, so as soon as lava came out of the crater, it spills over the edge. “ So for a month, there were puffs, eruptions and roads before the lava started to spill out”, he explained. When asked about the ash and smoke that is now continuously coming out of the crater, Suantika affirmed that it was wafting about 3,380 meters upwards but leaning slightly eastward. “Deep and shallow volcanic earthquake are no longer being recorded and no longer necessary. What is being recorded is only lava flow tremors”, said Suantika. The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation will be evaluate whether the alert level should be raised and discuss the matter with PVMBG team. (kmb41)

The future looks bright: light pollution rises on a global scale

WASHINGTON - The world is getting brighter, but scientists say that may not be a good thing.

Researchers said on Wednesday satellite data showed that Earth’s artificially lit outdoor surface at night grew by about 2 percent annually in brightness and area from 2012 to 2016, underscoring concerns about the ecological effects of light pollution on people and animals. The rate of growth observed in developing countries was much faster than in already brightly lit rich countries. The researchers said the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather satellite data may understate the situation because its sensor cannot detect some of the LED lighting that is becoming more widespread, specifically blue light. “Earth’s night is getting brighter. And I actually didn’t expect it to be so uniformly true that so many countries would be getting brighter,” said physicist Christopher Kyba of the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences, who led the research published in the journal Science Advances. With few exceptions, growth in nighttime light was observed throughout South America, Africa and Asia. Light remained stable in only a few countries. These included some of the world’s brightest such as Italy, Netherlands, Spain and the United States, although the researchers said the satellite sensor’s “blindness” to

some LED light may mask an actual increase. Australia’s lit area decreased due to wildfires. Nighttime light declined in war-hit Syrian and Yemen. Ecologist Franz Hölker of Germany’s LeibnizInstitute for Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB) said light pollution has ecological consequences, with natural light cycles disrupted by artificial light introduced into the nighttime environment. Increased sky glow can affect human sleep, he noted. “In addition to threatening 30 percent of vertebrates that are nocturnal and over 60 percent of invertebrates that are nocturnal, artificial light also affects plants and microorganisms,” Hölker said. “It threatens biodiversity through changed night habits, such as reproduction or migration patterns, of many different species: insects, amphibians, fish, birds, bats and other animals.” Kyba said nighttime lighting also obscures the stars that people have witnessed for millennia. Experts had hoped the growing use of highly efficient LED lighting might lessen energy usage worldwide. The new findings indicate use of artificial lighting instead is growing, increasing energy demand. “While we know that LEDs save energy in specific projects, for example when a city transitions all of its street lighting from sodium lamps to LED, when we look at our data and we look at the national and the global level, it indicates that these savings are being offset by either new or brighter lights in other places,” Kyba said. Virtual reality boom brings giant robots, cyberpunk castles to China

GUIYANG - Giant robots and futuristic cyberpunk castles rise out of lush mountain slopes on the outskirts of Guiyang, the capital of one of China’s poorest provinces. Welcome to China’s first virtual reality theme park, which aims to ride a boom in demand for virtual entertainment that is set to propel tenfold growth in the country’s virtual reality market, to hit almost $8.5 billion by 2020. The 330-acre (134-hectare) park in southwestern Guizhou province promises 35 virtual reality attractions, from shoot-’em-up games and virtual rollercoasters to tours with interstellar aliens of the region’s most scenic spots. “After our attraction opens, it will change the entire tourism structure of Guizhou province as well as China’s southwest,” Chief Executive Chen Jianli told Reuters. “This is an innovative attraction, because it’s just different,” he said in an interview at the park, part of which is scheduled to open next February. The $1.5-billion Oriental Science Fiction Valley park, is part of China’s thrust to develop new drivers of growth centred on trends such as gaming, sports and cuttingedge technology, to cut reliance on traditional industries. In the push to become a centre of

innovative tech, Guizhou is luring firms such as Apple Inc, which has sited its China data centre there, while the world’s largest radio telescope is in nearby Pingtang county. The park says it is the world’s first of its kind, although virtual reality-based attractions from the United States to Japan already draw interest from consumers and video gamers seeking a more immersive experience. The Guiyang park will offer tourists bungee jumps from a huge Transformer-like robot, and a studio devoted to producing virtual reality movies. Most rides will use VR goggles and motion simulators to thrill users. “You feel like you’re really there,” said Qu Zhongjie, the park’s manager of rides. “That’s our main feature.” China’s virtual reality market is expected to grow tenfold to 55.6 billion yuan ($8.4 billion) by the end of the decade, state-backed think-tank CCID has said. Farmers in the nearby village of Zhangtianshui said they were concerned about pollution from big developments, but looked forward to the economic benefits a new theme park would bring. Rumawan explained that there are many factors that contribute to Balinese people not wanting to seize business opportunities. Lack of capital is not the main factor, he said but rather the lack of business development networks. Rejection of mangosteen by Vietnam being found solution DENPASAR — Bali in particular has not yet had post-harvest technology so that the horticultural commodities produced can comply with the export standard operating procedures (SOP). This causes horticulture commodities of Indonesia especially Bali to be often hampered when exported. The export of mangosteen commodities, for instance, is rejected by Vietnam. Previously, China also rejected the import of mangosteen from Indonesia. Other than from Bali, the mangosteen from other regions in Indonesia is also denied to enter Vietnam. This happens because the condition of mangosteen from Indonesia is no longer fresh due to fumigation. This condition is being discussed in the central government to find a solution. Division Head of Plant Food and Horticulture at the Bali Agriculture Agency, I Wayan Sunatra, said that fumigation is the policy of the new Quarantine Agency. It is done because previously the other horticultural commodities contain plant-disturbing organisms. The Quarantine Agency does not want to take risks, so all commodities when arriving at the container are fumigated. “On that account, mangosteen perishes. Necessarily, it may not be fumigated,” he said on Friday (Nov. 24). Currently, it is being discussed in the central government both with the Director General of Horticulture in charge of mangosteen division and Angkasa Pura to find a solution. So far, the government has facilitated farmers in their post-harvest time by providing post-harvest wards to clean up mangosteen so as to comply with the SOPs such as tool to soak the mangosteen, special place et cetera. There is no special post-harvest treatment for mangosteen including paraffin administration because fresh organic fruit has become the branding of local horticultural products from Bali. Meanwhile, the use of cold storage does not affect the death of germs or bacteria in the mangosteen. “Cold storage only functions for preservation,” he said. Strict export rules for horticultural commodities should be supported by technology to encourage Indonesian exports. Although there is no limit to the export of mangosteen to Vietnam, China or other countries, Indonesia has not been able to export more. The challenge of exporting horticultural commodities is season. Rainy season makes the production of mangosteen reduced. Export of mangosteen from Bali previously amounting to 4,500 tons in previous years, in 2016 could only export 2,500 tons. Trade competition also caused commodities from Indonesia to be rejected or complicated. Previously, mangosteen was one of the commodities rejected by China because it contains pests. According to him, it is only a reason to reject imports from Indonesia. “They import mangosteen from Malaysia, whereas it comes from us. SINGARAJA — Following the second phreatic eruption of Mount Agung and the ash-fall that followed, thousands of residents of Karangasem evacuated back to Buleleng. People from disaster-prone areas (KRB) II and KRB III have began to arrive at the evacuation post on Sunday morning (Nov. 26). The waves of evacuees increased as it is believed that Mount Agung will soon be spewing magma from its crater. When the first phreatic eruption occurred on Tuesday (Nov. 21), residents of Karangasem started to evacuate to a number of different locations still within a 12 km radius of the crater. After the smoke subsided, the villagers returned to their homes. However after the second phreatic eruption on Saturday afternoon (Nov 25), they decided to evacuate again. The smoke coming out of the crater of Mount Agung was much more concentrated in the second eruption and many believe this is a sign that the great mountain will erupt soon. The evacuation authorities decided that residents of Karangasem should leave the area for some time and evacuate to the sub-district of Kubu. On Sunday afternoon, residents of Dukuh village were evacuated to Tembok village. No less than 3,100 people are now living in temporary shelters such as empty warehouses and public facilities where they had previously been evacuated to. Residents of Ban village have also began to take up temporary shelter in Les

village, Tejakula where they had been evacuated to when the alert level was raised. One evacuee named Luh Rumadani, said that the emergence of magma from the crater on Saturday night at 23:00, made her panic. Having returned home she then immediately rushed to the evacuation post located in the quarry area of Bumi Pasir Mandiri. “ Currently, there is only smoke so we go home. But as soon as it looks like fire on the mountain, we will evacuate”, she said. Meanwhile, headman of Dukuh, I Gede Sumiarsa, said that since smoke has been continuously billowing out of the crater since Saturday night (Nov 25), residents of Dukuh have evacuated to Tembok Village where they were immediately directed to public facilitates that had been prepared for them, including the village hall and a warehouse near the headman’s office. Evacuees are not allowed to set up tents during the rainy season. “ Today (Nov 26), all residents of Dukuh village have been asked to evacuate to Buleleng”, he said.

Headman Sumiarsa said they are still facing serious obstacles in evacuating thousands of people. Six trucks were used to transport 500 residents. The Kubu district police provided four of these trucks. The damaged road in the hamlet above the hill made the lack of vehicles even more challenging to deal with. “We do not have enough trucks to transport everyone and the road up there is not paved, so it makes it hard to evacuate people’ he explained. Volunteer Coordinator at Tembok village, Dewa Willy Asmawan, said that village officials are ready to receive up to 8,000 evacuees, provided that the evacuees are ready to help manage the evacuation post. It is important that the evacuation process takes place in an orderly and cooperative manner. “We are ready to help the evacuees and public facilities are ready to accommodate many evacuees”, he said, adding that if these buildings become filled local residents are ready to welcome evacuees in their homes. YANGON - Pope Francis arrived in Myanmar on Monday on a delicate visit for the leader of the Roman Catholic church to a majority-Buddhist country that the United States has accused of “ethnic cleansing” against its Muslim Rohingya people. The pope will also visit Bangladesh, where more than 620,000 Rohingya have fled to escape what Amnesty International has dubbed “crimes against humanity”. The Myanmar army has denied the accusations of murder, rape, torture and forcible displacement. After leaving Rome, the pope told reporters on his plane: “They say it’s too hot (in Myanmar). I’m sorry, but let’s hope it will at least be fruitful.” The pope was set to hold a private meeting with Myanmar army chief, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, at 6 p.m. (1130 GMT) in St. Mary’s Cathedral in the heart of the largest city of Yangon, where he arrived earlier, a Vatican spokesman said. Members of ethnic minority groups in traditional dress welcomed Francis at Yangon airport, and children presented him with flowers as he stepped off his plane. He waved through an open window at dozens of children waving Vatican and Myanmar flags and T-shirts with the motto of the trip -

It happens once in hundreds of years,” said Win Min Set, a community leader who brought a group of 1,800 Catholics from the south and west of the country. “He is very knowledgeable when it comes to political affairs. He will handle the issue smartly,” he said, referring to the sensitivity of the pope’s discussions about the Rohingya. Large numbers of riot police were mobilised in Yangon but there were no signs of any protests. BUSINESS Euro at 2-month high on upbeat German sentiment data, political hopes TOKYO - The euro hit a two-month high versus the dollar and held firm against other major currencies on Monday thanks to strong German business confidence and reduced anxiety about political instability in Europe’s biggest economy. The euro fetched $1.1929, little changed from late U.S. levels last week after having hit a high of $1.1946, its highest level in two months. The common currency now faces a test at $1.1965. That level is the 76.4 percent retracement of its decline from a 2 1/2-year peak of $1.2092 touched on Sept 8 to a 3-1/2-month low of $1.1553 set on Nov 7. It has gained 3.2 percent from that low. The euro rose to 133.24 yen, its highest since Nov 16 and it firmed on the British pound to 0.8978 pound , edging to near this month’s peak of 0.9014. The German business confidence index compiled by the Ifo economic institute hit a record high in November, in another sign of strong growth in the euro zone’s largest economy. Policymakers will be under pressure to balance efforts to tackle debt with the need to keep growth on a steady path, they said. Investor concerns over a crackdown on debt was highlighted last week when a sell-off in bonds spread to the stock market.

Top policymakers are expected to gather in December for the annual Central Economic Work Conference, which investors watch closely for policy priorities for the year ahead, amid a crackdown on riskier banking and investment activities. “Next year’s growth target could be similar to this year’s,” said a source who is close to policy discussions within the government. “It’s OK as long as we are able to secure growth of 6.5 percent.” President Xi Jinping said at the Communist Party Congress in October that China must defuse “major risks” in the economy, and fight poverty and pollution. DENPASAR - Bali’s government has warned locals near the Mount Agung volcano to stay away from rivers because of cold lava ploughing down the volcano’s slopes. Shocking footage shows a lahar – a type of mudflow containing volcanic debris and water – powerfully flowing through a river valley near Mount Agung. Despite having the consistency of concrete, the combination of water and ash can flow down river valleys at rapid speeds. A spokesman for Indonesia’s Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) warned against going close to rivers near Mount Agung. Sutopo Purwo Nugroho warned said on Twitter: “Watch out for lahar floods (cold lava) around Mt Agung. “Lahar floods have already occurred in several places on the slopes.” Lahars were seen flowing down the Yeh Sah River in Karangasem, according to Coconuts Bali and farmlands in the area had already reportedly been damaged by the mud. Britain’s Prince Harry to marry U.S. actress Meghan Markle

LONDON - Britain’s Prince Harry and his U.S. actress girlfriend Meghan Markle announced on Monday they were engaged and would get married in the spring of next year.

Queen Elizabeth’s grandson Harry, 33, currently fifth-in-line to the British throne, and Markle, 36, best known for her role in the U.S. TV legal drama “Suits”, got engaged earlier this month. “Prince Harry has informed Her Majesty The Queen and other close members of his family. Prince Harry has also sought and received the blessing of Ms Markle’s parents,” a statement issued by Clarence House, Prince Charles’ official London residence, said. A spokesman for Buckingham Palace said the queen, who had to give her assent for the union, and her husband Prince Philip were delighted. Government initiates rejuvenation program for North Sumatra`s palm oil plantations

SERDANG BEDAGAI - The government has initiated a program to rejuvenate palm oil plantations in North Sumatra spread across 9,109.29 hectares in 12 districts. Serdang Bedagai, Langkat, South Labuhan Batu, Labuhan Batu, Asahan, Batubara, Simalungun, North Labuhan Batu, North Padan Lawas, Padang Lawas, Deli Serdang, and Central Tapanuli are the districts outlined for the implementation of the program. “The province has a total of 470 thousand hectares of palm oil plantations, of which at least 350 thousand hectares need to be rejuvenated.
