Mariah Carey Cancels Three More Christmas Concerts Due to Health Concerns

LOS ANGELES - Mariah Carey is taking a brief respite before setting out on her holiday concerts. The singer, 47, announced she would be resting due to doctor’s orders, which led to a cancellation of three more of her Christmas concerts.

“I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving with loved ones; it’s certainly nice to remember what we are grateful for!” she wrote on Instagram. “Like most, I’m thankful for my overall health… for which I need a bit more time to get right. Doctors have ordered a few extra days of rest before I can finally fly to New York and take the stage for my Christmas Tour.”

She continued, “While this news disappoints me to share, I am grateful to be on the mend and for the support from all of you – it means the world to me! See you from the stage soon darlings! ?, Mariah” Carey revealed the canceled dated on her website — Nov. 27, Nov. 28 and Dec. 1. Her tour will resume with her New York date’s at the Beacon Theatre – Dec. 2, 4 and 5 – will be followed by three shows in Europe before continuing on to Las Vegas for five shows at The Colosseum at Caesar’s Palace.

In mid-November, the singer canceled her first few “All I Want for Christmas Is You” concerts due to illness.

“Lambs! Just in time for the holiday gift-giving season, it seems I’ve received a present of my own; a lovely upper respiratory infection after last week’s flu. Bleak!” she wrote in a statement posted to her Twitter account. “You know there is nothing I love more than celebrating the holidays with my festive Christmas show, but I have to take my doctor’s orders and rest until he says I can sing on stage.”

“Until then, unfortunately, I have to cancel the first several shows of my upcoming Christmas tour. I’m going to do all that I can so that I can see you soon,” she continued, ending her note with a few festive emojis. (rtr)

LOS ANGELES - Disney-Pixar’s “Coco” handily won the Thanksgiving holiday box office over the second weekend of Warner Bros.-DC Entertainment’s “Justice League,” with $71.2 million at 3,987 North American sites during the Wednesday-Sunday period.

“Justice League” pulled in $60 million at 4,051 locations during the same timeframe. The superhero action-adventure, the fifth in the DC Extended Universe, has totaled $172 million in its first 10 days.

“Coco” posted for the third-best Thanksgiving holiday opening ever, trailing three other Disney titles -- “Frozen” with $93 million in 2013, “Moana” with $82 million in 2017 and “Toy Story 3” with $80 million in 2010.

Audiences surveyed by comScore’s PostTrak gave “Coco” strong ratings with 66% calling it “excellent,” and another 23% rating it “very good.” Surveys also showed 77% of viewers saying they would “definitely recommend” the movie to friends and 20% saying they would watch it again in a theater.

“Coco,” directed by Lee Unkrich and co-directed by Adrian Molina,

is based on the traditions surrounding the Day of the Dead holiday in Mexico and centers on a 12-yearold boy who dreams of becoming a musician and explores his family history in the Land of the Dead. The studio has not released a price for the movie. Disney-Pixar titles are usually budgeted in the $175 million to $200 million range.

“Justice League,” which teams up the DC characters in the same manner as Disney-Marvel’s superheroes, is already in the top 15 of titles released in 2017 and has opened with a B+ CinemaScore. It’s been the lowest performer among the DC Extended Universe. “Wonder Woman” grossed $206.3 million in its first 10 days in June and “Suicide Squad” took in $222.6 million in its first 10 days in August 2016.

Disney-Marvel’s “Thor: Ragnarok” finished fourth with about $24 million at 3,281 sites, lifting its 24-day domestic total to $277 million. It’s topped “Despicable Me 3” as the sixth-highest grosser of 2017. (rtr)

Indonesia orders immediate evacuation as highest alert issued for Bali volcano

DENPASAR - Indonesia closed the airport on the tourist island of Bali on Monday and ordered 100,000 residents living near a glowing volcano spewing columns of ash to evacuate immediately, warning that the first major eruption in 54 years could be “imminent”. The airport was closed for 24 hours from Monday morning, disrupting 445 flights and some 59,000 passengers, after Mount Agung, which killed hundreds of people in 1963, sent volcanic ash high into the sky, and officials said cancellations could be extended.

“Plumes of smoke are occasionally accompanied by explosive eruptions and the sound of weak blasts that can be heard up to 12 km (7 miles) from the peak,” the Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said in a statement after raising the alert from three to its highest level of four.

“The potential for a larger eruption is imminent,” it said, referring to a visible glow of magma at Mount Agung’s peak overnight, and warning residents to evacuate a danger zone at a radius of 8-10

km (5-6 miles). Sutopo, a BNPB spokesman, said there had been no casualties so far and 40,000 people had left the area, but tens of thousands still needed to move.

Video footage shared by the agency showed volcanic mud flows (lahar) on the mountainside. Lahar carrying mud and large boulders can destroy houses, bridges and roads in its path.

Bali, famous for its surf, beaches and temples, attracted nearly 5 million visitors last year, and its

airport serves as a transport hub for the chain of islands in Indonesia’s eastern archipelago. But tourism has slumped in parts of Bali since September when Agung’s volcanic tremors began to increase and the alert level was raised to maximum before being lowered in October when seismic activity calmed.

“I’m not worried (but) my friends in Russia are a little bit,” said a Russian tourist, who only wanted to be identified as Dmitry, at an observation post in Rendang in Bali’s east.

Agung rises majestically over eastern Bali to a height of just over 3,000 metres (9,800 feet). Northeastern Bali is relatively undeveloped compared to the more heavily populated southern tourist hub of Kuta-Seminyak-Nusa Dua.

EXPLOSIVE ERUPTION Indonesia’s Vulcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Centre (PVMBG), which is using drones, satellite imagery and other equipment, said predictions were difficult in the absence of instrumental recordings from the last eruption 54 years ago. In 1963, an eruption of Agung killed more than 1,000 people and razed several villages by hurling out pyroclastic material, hot ash, lava and lahar.

Recordings now show the northeast area of Agung’s peak has swollen in recent weeks “indicating there is fairly strong pressure toward the surface”, PVMBG said.

It warned that if a similar eruption occurred, it could send rocks bigger than fist-size up to 8 km (5 miles) from the summit and volcanic gas to a distance of 10 km (6 miles) within three minutes.

Overly erotic Joged Bumbung disturbs public order

DENPASAR - Overly erotic or ‘porn style’ Joged Bumbung is clearly contrary to the aesthetics and ethics of Balinese dance. Not only does this style of joged disturb public order could also threaten the status of Joged Bumbung as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage.

“It is necessary to prohibit ‘pornographic style joged’ as it disturbs public order. Besides it is not good for the moral education of children and teenagers who see it. Balinese dance does not have any erotic or pornographic dances – let alone dances that involved removing garments”, said the humanist I Made Bandem when contacted on Sunday (Nov. 26).

According to Bandem, the Governor of Bali’s Circular No. 6393/2016 gives legal power to ban performances of ‘pornographic joged’. The regents / mayor as well as the District Cultural Office, Customary Village General Assembly (MUDP), chief sof customary villages and the Bali Police should take immediate action in enforcing the gubernatorial circular.

The videos however can cannot be taken down without the approval of Goolgle and Youtube. Allowing ‘porn joged’ to be widely shared on the internet could threaten Joged Bumbung’s status as a intangible cultural heritage (UNESCO).

“Surely we could be reprimanded by UNESCO because our task is to glorify our traditional arts. If this problem persists, it will surely lead to having the status of Joged Bumbung as an intangible cultural heritage revoked. So far, there has been no reprimand”, explained Bandem. (kmb32)

Revenue from IMTA decreases

Denpasar - Revenue from Expatriate Employment Pass (IMTA) is targeted to reach IDR 17 billion by the end of 2017. This target is less than last year’s target of IDR 2 billion. The Government of Bali’s Manpower and Energy and Mineral Resources (ERM) says that this indicates a success in that strategic job positions are increasingly being filled by the local workforce.

“Actually we do not hope for increased income from the IMTAs as this would indicate that job positions in Bali are being filled by foreign workers. The current decline in income form IMTA indicated that we have been successful in having more jobs filled by local workers”, said Head of Bali Manpower and ERM, Ni Luh Made Wiratmi, recently.

According to Wiratmi, the nearly 25 percent decline in IMTA income is also due to district 1 municipal regulation concerning IMTA extensions. Foreign workers who only work in one district apply for their IMTA in that district, however those who work across districts1municipality apply for their permits from the the province.

“In the past, there were about 3,000 foreign workers but this has gone down about 25 percent to 2000 workers. There is a rule about transfer of knowledge, whereby every foreign worker but be accompanied by at least one Indonesian worker”, she explained.

Wiratmi added companies must pay IDR 15 million a month for IMTAs but in fact Indonesian workers – Balinese included, are no less intelligent or competent. If companies hire Indonesian workers instead, they do not have to apply for and pay for IMTAs nor pay foreign workers large salaries.

“If we want to show appreciation for our own people and our products, why it is so difficult?

Investment is a different matter and there are rules governing this.

But if it is just a matter of hiring expensive foreign workers, it is better to hire Indonesian workers that are just as competent, skilled, experienced and in no way inferior to foreign workers”, she said. Wiratmi went on to say that with more job opportunities being open to locals, Indonesian funds would not leave the country. (kmb32)

According to experience of 1963, big eruption takes a month

AMLAPURA - According to Head of Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation, I Gede Suantika, Mount Agung’s recent volcanic activity shows smoke wafting thicker and higher out of the crater, energy pressure getting stronger and the intrusion of lava at the bottom of the crater increasing in volume.

“We still hope that there will only be an effusive eruption which means that the lava filling the bottom of the volcano spills downwards. But we are concerned about the possibility of a sudden addition of volume discharge coming out in a short amount of time as the lave channel is quite small. This would likely cause a big eruption. This is what we are worried about”, said Suantika.

Suantika predicts that as greater amounts of smoke and ash leave the crater, the hole at the bottom of the crater will be destroyed and new holes created. In 1963, said

Suantika, it took one month of smoke and ash coming out of the mountain for the biggest eruption to occur. He added that he is confident that at that time the crater was not as deep as it is now, so as soon as lava came out of the crater, it spills over the edge. “ So for a month, there were puffs, eruptions and roads before the lava started to spill out”, he explained.

When asked about the ash and smoke that is now continuously coming out of the crater, Suantika affirmed that it was wafting about 3,380 meters upwards but leaning slightly eastward. “Deep and shallow volcanic earthquake are no longer being recorded and no longer necessary. What is being recorded is only lava flow tremors”, said Suantika. The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation will be evaluate whether the alert level should be raised and discuss the matter with PVMBG team. (kmb41)

The future looks bright: light pollution rises on a global scale

WASHINGTON - The world is getting brighter, but scientists say that may not be a good thing.

Researchers said on Wednesday satellite data showed that Earth’s artificially lit outdoor surface at night grew by about 2 percent annually in brightness and area from 2012 to 2016, underscoring concerns about the ecological effects of light pollution on people and animals.

The rate of growth observed in developing countries was much faster than in already brightly lit rich countries.

The researchers said the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather satellite data may understate the situation because its sensor cannot detect some of the LED lighting that is becoming more widespread, specifically blue light.

“Earth’s night is getting brighter. And I actually didn’t expect it to be so uniformly true that so many countries would be getting brighter,” said physicist Christopher Kyba of the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences, who led the research published in the journal Science Advances.

With few exceptions, growth in nighttime light was observed throughout South America, Africa and Asia.

Light remained stable in only a few countries. These included some of the world’s brightest such as Italy, Netherlands, Spain and the United States, although the researchers said the satellite sensor’s “blindness” to

some LED light may mask an actual increase.

Australia’s lit area decreased due to wildfires.

Nighttime light declined in war-hit Syrian and Yemen.

Ecologist Franz Hölker of Germany’s LeibnizInstitute for Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB) said light pollution has ecological consequences, with natural light cycles disrupted by artificial light introduced into the nighttime environment. Increased sky glow can affect human sleep, he noted.

“In addition to threatening 30 percent of vertebrates that are nocturnal and over 60 percent of invertebrates that are nocturnal, artificial light also affects plants and microorganisms,” Hölker said. “It threatens biodiversity through changed night habits, such as reproduction or migration patterns, of many different species: insects, amphibians, fish, birds, bats and other animals.”

Kyba said nighttime lighting also obscures the stars that people have witnessed for millennia.

Experts had hoped the growing use of highly efficient LED lighting might lessen energy usage worldwide. The new findings indicate use of artificial lighting instead is growing, increasing energy demand.

“While we know that LEDs save energy in specific projects, for example when a city transitions all of its street lighting from sodium lamps to LED, when we look at our data and we look at the national and the global level, it indicates that these savings are being offset by either new or brighter lights in other places,” Kyba said. Virtual reality boom brings giant robots, cyberpunk castles to China

GUIYANG - Giant robots and futuristic cyberpunk castles rise out of lush mountain slopes on the outskirts of Guiyang, the capital of one of China’s poorest provinces.

Welcome to China’s first virtual reality theme park, which aims to ride a boom in demand for virtual entertainment that is set to propel tenfold growth in the country’s virtual reality market, to hit almost $8.5 billion by 2020.

The 330-acre (134-hectare) park in southwestern Guizhou province promises 35 virtual reality attractions, from shoot-’em-up games and virtual rollercoasters to tours with interstellar aliens of the region’s most scenic spots.

“After our attraction opens, it will change the entire tourism structure of Guizhou province as well as China’s southwest,” Chief Executive Chen Jianli told Reuters.

“This is an innovative attraction, because it’s just different,” he said in an interview at the park, part of which is scheduled to open next February.

The $1.5-billion Oriental Science Fiction Valley park, is part of China’s thrust to develop new drivers of growth centred on trends such as gaming, sports and cuttingedge technology, to cut reliance on traditional industries.

In the push to become a centre of

innovative tech, Guizhou is luring firms such as Apple Inc, which has sited its China data centre there, while the world’s largest radio telescope is in nearby Pingtang county.

The park says it is the world’s first of its kind, although virtual reality-based attractions from the United States to Japan already draw interest from consumers and video gamers seeking a more immersive experience.

The Guiyang park will offer tourists bungee jumps from a huge Transformer-like robot, and a studio devoted to producing virtual reality movies. Most rides will use VR goggles and motion simulators to thrill users.

“You feel like you’re really there,” said Qu Zhongjie, the park’s manager of rides. “That’s our main feature.”

China’s virtual reality market is expected to grow tenfold to 55.6 billion yuan ($8.4 billion) by the end of the decade, state-backed think-tank CCID has said.

Farmers in the nearby village of Zhangtianshui said they were concerned about pollution from big developments, but looked forward to the economic benefits a new theme park would bring.

Most were less sure about virtual battles or alien invasions, though. (rtr)

Rumawan explained that there are many factors that contribute to Balinese people not wanting to seize business opportunities. Lack of capital is not the main factor, he said but rather the lack of business development networks. Actually, building relationships with various take-holders is very influential in developing businesses in Bali. “This does not mean we leave it entirely to the stakeholders (investors), but as Balinese we have to open ourselves to business opportunities by involving them as our clients”, he continued.

The use of information technologies, language skills and competitiveness are also factors that influence business opportunities, explained Rumawan saying that utilizing these with integrity will allow Balinese people to compete globally and not be left behind by the times.

“Balinese people have a lot of ego which makes them less productive.

They should be more open to collaborating. Also they do not tend to challenge themselves in being competitive because they are always looking to be comfortable without thinking about future generations”, he said.

Dr. I.B. Radendra Suastama, expressed a similar opinion saying that most Balinese people consider that being an entrepreneur will lower their social status in the community. Actually in order to become a successful entrepreneur, you must start on the small scale, he said. Also, the feeling of being native to Bali makes many people here spoiled and lack diligence in their work.

Meanwhile, regarding the quality of human resources, Radendra said that Balinese people are just as capable as others. However, the fundamental issue lies in more fundamental issues related to attitude.

Not wanting to be the first one to take a risk and attention to prestige are attitudes that need to change, he said.

“If we look at things than prestige then we will not feel that we are degenerating by working in the informal sector or start a business from the ground –up. Then we can be truly competitive because we have very good basic qualities that are just as good as those of our friends from outside the island”, added Chairman of the STIMI Handayani Education Foundation Denpasar.

He also said that the way that Balinese places value on the efforts of others also b=needs to change. Valuing wealth or position should not be placed above pioneering efforts. “ So the problem is with our ‘ideology’ or value system. We need to change our way of thinking if we want to be winners instead of losers, performers instead of spectators. Oka Digjaya pointed out, the fallen tree disaster closed that road access occurred at Susut hamlet, Buahan, Payangan subdistrict on Thursday (Nov. 23).

Fallen trees happened due to heavy rain and soil on the roots of the trees is unstable. BPBD officers immediately came down to the location to do the cleaning.

so that coconut trees uprooted and blocked the road section on Saba Beach at Pering hamlet, Blahbatuh. A few hours later, landslide occurred at Timbul hamlet, Pupuan, Tegallalang.

The landslide brought the material of trees to hamper the road. The tree carried by landslide belongs to champak with the height of six meters.

Oka Digjaya said that to address the incident of fallen tree, his agency immediately trimmed so the road access is not disturbed. Besides, the landslide materials accumulating in the roads are immediately sprayed so as not to be slippery. “In the weather like this, there are many landslides and fallen trees. Hopefully, people could be more vigilant,” he said.

He said the disaster-prone areas include highlands such as Payangan, Tegallalang and Tampaksiring. They belong to vulnerable area because the soil condition is unstable. “When the weather is bad, people are expected to avoid prone areas to disaster,” he added. (kmb35)

This causes horticulture commodities of Indonesia especially Bali to be often hampered when exported. The export of mangosteen commodities, for instance, is rejected by Vietnam. Previously, China also rejected the import of mangosteen from Indonesia.

Other than from Bali, the mangosteen from other regions in Indonesia is also denied to enter Vietnam. This happens because the condition of mangosteen from Indonesia is no longer fresh due to fumigation. This condition is being discussed in the central government to find a solution.

Division Head of Plant Food and Horticulture at the Bali Agriculture Agency, I Wayan Sunatra, said that fumigation is the policy of the new Quarantine Agency. It is done because previously the other horticultural commodities contain plant-disturbing organisms.

The Quarantine Agency does not want to take risks, so all commodities when arriving at the container are fumigated. “On that account, mangosteen perishes. Necessarily, it may not be fumigated,” he said on Friday (Nov. 24). Currently, it is being discussed in the central government both with the Director General of Horticulture in charge of mangosteen division and Angkasa Pura to find a solution.

So far, the government has facilitated farmers in their post-harvest time by providing post-harvest wards to clean up mangosteen so as to comply with the SOPs such as tool to soak the mangosteen, special place et cetera. There is no special post-harvest treatment for mangosteen including paraffin administration because fresh organic fruit has become the branding of local horticultural products from Bali. Meanwhile, the use of cold storage does not affect the death of germs or bacteria in the mangosteen. “Cold storage only functions for preservation,” he said.

Strict export rules for horticultural commodities should be supported by technology to encourage Indonesian exports. Although there is no limit to the export of mangosteen to Vietnam, China or other countries, Indonesia has not been able to export more. The challenge of exporting horticultural commodities is season. Rainy season makes the production of mangosteen reduced. Export of mangosteen from Bali previously amounting to 4,500 tons in previous years, in 2016 could only export 2,500 tons.

Trade competition also caused commodities from Indonesia to be rejected or complicated. Previously, mangosteen was one of the commodities rejected by China because it contains pests. According to him, it is only a reason to reject imports from Indonesia.

“They import mangosteen from Malaysia, whereas it comes from us. China is still importing mangosteen from Indonesia but through Malaysia,” he said. (kmb42)

SINGARAJA — Following the second phreatic eruption of Mount Agung and the ash-fall that followed, thousands of residents of Karangasem evacuated back to Buleleng. People from disaster-prone areas (KRB) II and KRB III have began to arrive at the evacuation post on Sunday morning (Nov. 26). The waves of evacuees increased as it is believed that Mount Agung will soon be spewing magma from its crater.

When the first phreatic eruption occurred on Tuesday (Nov. 21), residents of Karangasem started to evacuate to a number of different locations still within a 12 km radius of the crater. After the smoke subsided, the villagers returned to their homes. However after the second phreatic eruption on Saturday afternoon (Nov 25), they decided to evacuate again. The smoke coming out of the crater of Mount Agung was much more concentrated in the second eruption and many believe this is a sign that the great mountain will erupt soon.

The evacuation authorities decided that residents of Karangasem should leave the area for some time and evacuate to the sub-district of Kubu. On Sunday afternoon, residents of Dukuh village were evacuated to Tembok village. No less than 3,100 people are now living in temporary shelters such as empty warehouses and public facilities where they had previously been evacuated to. Residents of Ban village have also began to take up temporary shelter in Les

village, Tejakula where they had been evacuated to when the alert level was raised.

One evacuee named Luh Rumadani, said that the emergence of magma from the crater on Saturday night at 23:00, made her panic. Having returned home she then immediately rushed to the evacuation post located in the quarry area of Bumi Pasir Mandiri. “ Currently, there is only smoke so we go home. But as soon as it looks like fire on the mountain, we will evacuate”, she said.

Meanwhile, headman of Dukuh, I Gede Sumiarsa, said that since smoke has been continuously billowing out of the crater since Saturday night (Nov 25), residents of Dukuh have evacuated to Tembok Village where they were immediately directed to public facilitates that had been prepared for them, including the village hall and a warehouse near the headman’s office. Evacuees are not allowed to set up tents during the rainy season. “ Today (Nov 26), all residents of Dukuh village have been asked to evacuate to Buleleng”, he said.

Headman Sumiarsa said they are still facing serious obstacles in evacuating thousands of people.

Six trucks were used to transport 500 residents. The Kubu district police provided four of these trucks.

The damaged road in the hamlet above the hill made the lack of vehicles even more challenging to deal with. “We do not have enough trucks to transport everyone and the road up there is not paved, so it makes it hard to evacuate people’ he explained.

Volunteer Coordinator at Tembok village, Dewa Willy Asmawan, said that village officials are ready to receive up to 8,000 evacuees, provided that the evacuees are ready to help manage the evacuation post. It is important that the evacuation process takes place in an orderly and cooperative manner.

“We are ready to help the evacuees and public facilities are ready to accommodate many evacuees”, he said, adding that if these buildings become filled local residents are ready to welcome evacuees in their homes. (kmb38)

Pope starts Myanmar trip in shadow of Rohingya crisis

YANGON - Myanmar’s civilian leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, will soon visit Beijing, state media said on Monday, as the southeast Asian nation appears to draw closer to its northern neighbour, China, amid global criticism over an exodus of Rohingya refugees.

Myanmar has bristled at pressure from Western nations over its armed forces’ brutal response to August attacks on security posts by Rohingya Muslim militants in the western state of Rakhine.

The United States and the United Nations have accused Myanmar of “ethnic cleansing” and called for the military to be held accountable over allegations of killings, rape and arson that sent more than 620,000 Rohingya fleeing to Bangladesh.

China, however, has backed what Myanmar officials call a legitimate counter-insurgency operation in Rakhine, and stepped in to prevent a resolution on the crisis at the U.N. Security Council.

News of Suu Kyi’s visit comes after Chinese President Xi Jinping and Chinese military leaders wel-

comed Myanmar’s powerful army chief Min Aung Hlaing last week and pledged closer cooperation.

The state-run daily Global New Light of Myanmar said Nobel Peace laureate Suu Kyi would “soon” depart to attend a Communist Party of China-hosted forum of world political leaders in Beijing.

Suu Kyi’s spokesman Zaw Htay could not be reached for more details, but the meeting begins on Thursday and runs until Dec. 3, according to China’s official news agency Xinhua.

Myanmar is in the international spotlight this week as Pope Francis makes the first visit by a head of the Roman Catholic church to the Buddhist-majority country.

He has previously spoken out about the treatment of minority Muslims to whom Myanmar denies citizenship, but some Christians fear doing so in the country could provoke a backlash.

Many in Myanmar refuse to recognise the name Rohingya, preferring to call them “Bengalis” to suggest they belong in neighbouring Bangladesh. (rtr)

YANGON - Pope Francis arrived in Myanmar on Monday on a delicate visit for the leader of the Roman Catholic church to a majority-Buddhist country that the United States has accused of “ethnic cleansing” against its Muslim Rohingya people.

The pope will also visit Bangladesh, where more than 620,000 Rohingya have fled to escape what Amnesty International has dubbed “crimes against humanity”.

The Myanmar army has denied the accusations of murder, rape, torture and forcible displacement.

After leaving Rome, the pope told reporters on his plane: “They say it’s too hot (in Myanmar). I’m sorry, but let’s hope it will at least be fruitful.”

The pope was set to hold a private meeting with Myanmar army chief, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, at 6 p.m. (1130 GMT) in St. Mary’s Cathedral in the heart of the largest city of Yangon, where he arrived earlier, a Vatican spokesman said.

Members of ethnic minority groups in traditional dress welcomed Francis at Yangon airport, and children presented him with flowers as he stepped off his plane.

He waved through an open window at dozens of children waving Vatican and Myanmar flags and T-shirts with the motto of the trip -

“love and peace” - as he set off in a light blue Toyota car for St. Mary’s Cathedral.

Only about 700,000 of Myanmar’s 51 million people are Roman Catholic. Thousands of them travelled by train and bus to Yangon, and they joined crowds at several roadside points along the way from the airport to catch a glimpse of the pope. “We come here to see the Holy Father. It happens once in hundreds of years,” said Win Min Set, a community leader who brought a group of 1,800 Catholics from the south and west of the country.

“He is very knowledgeable when it comes to political affairs. He will handle the issue smartly,” he said, referring to the sensitivity of the pope’s discussions about the Rohingya.

Large numbers of riot police were mobilised in Yangon but there were no signs of any protests.

The trip is so delicate that some papal advisers have warned him against even saying the word “Rohingya”, lest he set off a diplomatic

incident that could turn the country’s military and government against minority Christians.

The Rohingya exodus from Rakhine state to Bangladesh’s southern tip began at the end of August, when Rohingya militants attacked security posts and the Myanmar army launched a counter-offensive.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson last week called the military operation “ethnic cleansing” and threatened targeted sanctions for “horrendous atrocities”.

Myanmar’s government has denied most of the accusations made against it, and the army says its own investigation found no evidence of wrongdoing by troops.

Myanmar does not recognise the Rohingya as citizens nor as members of a distinct ethnic group with their own identity, and it even rejects the term “Rohingya” and its use.

Many people in Myanmar instead refer to members of the Muslim minority in Rakhine state as illegal migrants from Bangladesh. (rtr)

BUSINESS Euro at 2-month high on upbeat German sentiment data, political hopes TOKYO - The euro hit a two-month high versus the dollar and held firm against other major currencies on Monday thanks to strong German business confidence and reduced anxiety about political instability in Europe’s biggest economy.

The euro fetched $1.1929, little changed from late U.S. levels last week after having hit a high of $1.1946, its highest level in two months.

The common currency now faces a test at $1.1965. That level is the 76.4 percent retracement of its decline from a 2 1/2-year peak of $1.2092 touched on Sept 8 to a 3-1/2-month low of $1.1553 set on Nov 7.

It has gained 3.2 percent from that low.

The euro rose to 133.24 yen, its highest since Nov 16 and it firmed on the British pound to 0.8978 pound , edging to near this month’s peak of 0.9014.

The German business confidence index compiled by the Ifo economic institute hit a record high in November, in another sign of strong growth in the euro zone’s largest economy.

The upbeat data was followed by positive political developments after German Chancellor Angela Merkel - whose chances for a fourth term were plunged into doubt a week ago when three-way coalition talks with the pro-business Free Democrats (FDP) and Greens collapsed - was handed a political lifeline by the Social Democrats (SDP).

That helped ease worries about political instability in the country as Leaders Merkel’s conservative party agreed on Sunday to pursue a “grand coalition” with the SPD. In contrast, the dollar lacked momentum of its own as persistently low inflation is seen as undermining the case for the Federal Reserve’s rate hikes.

Market players are looking to the Congressional hearing on Fed Chair nominee Jerome Powell on Tuesday.

President Donald Trump’s tax reform plan is also in focus. Trump is due to meet Senate Republicans on Tuesday to discuss the party’s efforts to pass tax reform legislation.

“First the Republicans have to agree on a plan between the Senate and the House of Representatives. Then that plan would need to be approved by the both chambers.

That would need considerable time and effort,” said Shin Kadota, senior strategist at Barclays.

The dollar index stood flat at 92.801, near two-month low of 92.675 touched on Friday.

BEIJING - China’s leaders are likely to maintain this year’s growth target of “around 6.5 percent” in 2018, even as they ratchet up efforts to prevent a destabilising build-up of debt in the world’s second-largest economy, according to policy sources.

Policymakers will be under pressure to balance efforts to tackle debt with the need to keep growth on a steady path, they said. Investor concerns over a crackdown on debt was highlighted last week when a sell-off in bonds spread to the stock market.

Top policymakers are expected to gather in December for the annual Central Economic Work Conference, which investors watch closely for policy priorities for the year ahead, amid a crackdown on riskier banking and investment activities. “Next year’s growth target could be similar to this year’s,” said a source who is close to policy discussions within the government. “It’s OK as long as we are able to secure growth of 6.5 percent.”

President Xi Jinping said at the Communist Party Congress in October that China must defuse “major risks” in the economy, and fight poverty and pollution. But he is also committed to meeting a goal set by the previous administration of doubling gross domestic product in the decade to 2020, to turn China into a “modestly prosperous” nation. That means that growth needs to be around 6.5 percent in each of the next three years.

The urgency to address debt and property risks was highlighted by a warning on the sidelines of the congress from the central bank chief, Zhou Xiaochuan, of the risk of a “Minsky moment” - a reference to a sudden collapse in asset prices after long periods of growth fuelled by debt. “Growth cannot be too low as we still need to build a modestly prosperous society as outlined at the party congress,” said a second source.

Both sources, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, are involved in internal policy discussions and offer advice to Chinese policymakers but are not part of the final decision-making process. This may trigger systemic risks if we cannot handle well,” said one of the sources.

TREADING WARILY China’s economy grew 6.7 percent last year, a 26-year low, and was targeted to grow around 6.5 percent this year. But it has grown at an annual 6.9 percent in the first three quarters on strong demand for Chinese exports and sustained state spending. That has the economy on track to pick up pace for the first time in seven years, and means 6.5 percent growth over the next few years would be enough to meet the 2020 growth target.

At the same time, the sources said the central bank was expected to keep a slight tightening bias in policy settings.

Central bank data showed the weighted average lending rate for non-financial firms, a key indicator of corporate funding costs, edged up 9 basis points in the third quarter to 5.76 percent, following a rise of 14 basis points in the second quarter and a rise of 26 basis points in the first.

The average mortgage lending rate rose 32 basis points in the third quarter to 5.01 percent, after rising by a total of 17 basis points in the first half of the year. “Deleveraging - no matter it’s in the financial or corporate sector - will definitely put downward pressure on the economy,” one of the policy sources said.(rtr)

DENPASAR - Bali’s government has warned locals near the Mount Agung volcano to stay away from rivers because of cold lava ploughing down the volcano’s slopes.

Shocking footage shows a lahar – a type of mudflow containing volcanic debris and water – powerfully flowing through a river valley near Mount Agung. Despite having the consistency of concrete, the combination of water and ash can flow down river valleys at rapid speeds.

A spokesman for Indonesia’s Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) warned against going close to rivers near Mount Agung.

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho warned said on Twitter: “Watch out for lahar floods (cold lava) around Mt Agung. “Lahar floods have already occurred in several places on the slopes.” Lahars were seen flowing down the Yeh Sah River in Karangasem, according to Coconuts Bali and farmlands in the area had already reportedly been damaged by the mud.

A Bali police official said: “The ash released from Mount Agung was hit by rainwater and has now become mud in the Yeh Sah River.” The BNPB reported that nearly 40,000 people have been evacuated from near Bali’s erupting Mount Agung volcano but thousands more had yet to

Mount Agung’s mounting threat forced the Indonesian Government to close the local airport, grounding more than 2000 flights and leaving thousands of tourists stranded on the island.

Bali airport has been closed and several major airlines have announced they are cancelling flights to and from the tourist hotspot due to the ash cloud. Mount Agung last erupted in 1963, killing more than 1,700 people and destroying many villages in one of the most devastating eruptions in Indonesia’s history.(ant)

Mengening Temple, a Spiritual Destination in Gianyar

A side from nature and culture, Bali also offers a spiritual tourism because it has several historic places sanctified by the Hindu community. One of them is the Mengening Temple at Saraseda village, Tampaksiring, Gianyar.

This attraction offers a cool and beautiful atmosphere. Those that can read the signs of nature will feel something different resulting in tranquility.

Inside the temple, there is a spring used as a place to invoke

holy water as a means of ceremony for Balinese Hindus. Besides, there is a pool that can be used for selfcleaning. It is divided into two, namely a special bathing pool for men and women.

Before entering the bathing pool, visitors are advised to use cloth and then step down some stairs to get to the pool. Local people are accustomed to using the pool for bathing, self-cleaning. Moreover, on certain holidays, many Balinese Hindus come to the temple to do

self-purificatory rite to get rid of spiritual impurities.

Local people visit the temple almost every afternoon to bathe with friends or family. “We bathe here almost every day. The atmosphere is cool and the water is fresh, so that the body and mind feel fresh as well. We love the atmosphere in this peaceful and quiet temple.

When bathing, we usually offer some offerings to invoke salvation,” said a local resident.

Mengening Temple implements the tri mandala or three horizontal spatial dimension concept, namely the nista mandala (outermost), madya mandala (middle) and uttama mandala (innermost courtyard).

In the outermost courtyard of the Mengening Temple sits a garden with pancaka tirtha. This garden is used as a place of self-purification by local deities. In some places, there is also a source of holy water commonly taken by the community for ritual purposes.

According to the temple attendant, the spring of holy water includes the Tirtha Keben, Tirtha Sudamala, Tirtha Melela, Tirtha Soka, Tirtha Megelung, Tirtha Tunggang and Tirtha Telaga Waja.

Meanwhile, in the area of Pancaka tirtha garden sits the Tirtha Parisuda, Tirtha Pengelukatan, Tirtha Pengulapan, Tirtha Keris and Tirtha Kamaning. Visitors are not allowed to bathe in the springs to prevent the water from receding and disappearing.

In the middle courtyard there are some buildings such as gamelan pavilion, wooden split drum (kulkul) tower, Bale Pegambahan and Bale Pegat. Then, the innermost courtyard consists of some shrines including three-tiered meru shrine as the abode of Ida Bathara Prasada Agung, the chamber is the abode of deities of Gunung Kawi, Limas shrine for deity of Tirta Empul, Pemaruman, Bale Saka Ulu as the abode of Lord Shiva, Paselang pavilion, Bale Pecanangan and Bale Penganteb.

Britain’s Prince Harry to marry U.S. actress Meghan Markle

LONDON - Britain’s Prince Harry and his U.S. actress girlfriend Meghan Markle announced on Monday they were engaged and would get married in the spring of next year.

Queen Elizabeth’s grandson Harry, 33, currently fifth-in-line to the British throne, and Markle, 36, best known for her role in the U.S. TV legal drama “Suits”, got engaged earlier this month.

“Prince Harry has informed Her Majesty The Queen and other close members of his family. Prince Harry has also sought and received the blessing of Ms Markle’s parents,” a statement issued by Clarence House, Prince Charles’ official London residence, said.

A spokesman for Buckingham Palace said the queen, who had to give her assent for the union, and her husband Prince Philip were delighted.

The couple met in July 2016 after they were introduced through friends.

Prince Harry publicly confirmed their relationship months later in a rebuke to the media, which had been intruding into Markle’s private life. But it was not until September that they made their first public appearance together at the Invictus Games in Toronto, a sports event for wounded veterans.

“We’re in love,” Markle told Vanity Fair magazine in an interview that month. “I’m sure there will be a time when we will have to come forward and present ourselves and have stories to tell, but I hope what people will understand is that this is our time.

“It’s part of what makes it so special, that it’s just ours.

Government initiates rejuvenation program for North Sumatra`s palm oil plantations

SERDANG BEDAGAI - The government has initiated a program to rejuvenate palm oil plantations in North Sumatra spread across 9,109.29 hectares in 12 districts. Serdang Bedagai, Langkat, South Labuhan Batu, Labuhan Batu, Asahan, Batubara, Simalungun, North Labuhan Batu, North Padan Lawas, Padang Lawas, Deli Serdang, and Central Tapanuli are the districts outlined for the implementation of the program.

“The province has a total of 470 thousand hectares of palm oil plantations, of which at least 350 thousand hectares need to be rejuvenated.

Despite the wide area, we should rejuvenate the trees to increase their productivity,” President Joko Widodo noted in his speech in Dolok Masihul Sub-district of Serdang Bedagai

Widodo said the trees aged between 25 and 30 years were not productive and should be rejuvenated.

The government, through the People`s Palm Oil Replanting Program, is providing funds to farmers to conduct replanting activities in their palm oil plantations.

He said Indonesia also produces raw materials needed to manufacture soaps, cosmetics, margarine, cooking oil, and pharmaceuticals.

Palm oil is also one of the raw materials for producing biodiesel fuel used in vehicles. Widodo re-

marked that Indonesia is aiming to become the producer of palm oil derivative products.

“The industrial management of palm oil should be improved.

We should boost ways to manage, preserve, and replant the fields,” Widodo noted. Besides this, the government had rejuvenated palm oil fields in South Sumatra Province that are located in Musi Banyuasin District, spanning 4,100 hectares, in last October.

The total area of palm oil plantations in Indonesia reaches 11.9 million hectares, of which at least 4.6 million hectares belong to the private sector. Palm oil trees to be rejuvenated are aged over 25 years and produce less than 10 tons of palm oil fruits per year. (ant)

A scary moment occurred when Briton Jack Gower crashed at full speed into the course’s net fencing, losing a ski and tumbling awkwardly.

He waved his hand to the crowd to indicate he was okay and was able to ski to the end of the course under his own strength

after the race was temporarily suspended.

The sport is still mourning the death of French skier David Poisson in a training accident in Alberta on Nov. 13.

Chelsea should be worried by Man City spending strategy, says Conte Chelsea manager Antonio Conte says Manchester City’s summer spending improved an already “fantastic” team and the Italian is worried his side will fall further behind the Premier League leaders if they fail to get it right in the transfer market.

The world number seven Goffin, who entered the tie high on confidence after finishing runnerup at the ATP Finals, won both his singles in awe-inspiring fashion against Lucas Pouille and JoWilfried Tsonga.

But Belgium lost Saturday’s pivotal doubles match, in which Goffin did not play, while Darcis proved the weak link, being trounced in both his singles rubbers while winning only 10 games in six sets.

The world number 76 was defeated 6-3 6-2 6-1 by French number one Tsonga on Friday and demolished 6-3 6-1 6-0 in the deciding rubber by Pouille on

Sunday.

“I’m appalled by my performance,” said the experienced 33year-old Darcis.

Being outplayed by Tsonga was no shame for Darcis, but for a man who had never lost a deciding match in the Davis Cup before, the thrashing he received from Pouille, who had never before played a decisive rubber, was less expected.

“I’ve been spanked twice even if I tried my best,” he said.

Jansrud wins first Super-G of season at Lake Louise

Kjetil Jansrud won the first Super-G of the season at Lake Louise on Sunday, besting a duo of Austrians and his Norwegian team mates for his 10th World Cup title in the event.

The favourite going into Sunday’s competition, the twice Super-G season winner was flawless during his one minute 30.76 second trip down the course in Western Canada.

Heavy snow fell as the day progressed, slowing the course down and impacting visibility.

Jansrud had finished fifth in the downhill event on Saturday and the winner of that race, Swiss Beat Feuz, finished 12th in the Super-G on Sunday.

A scary moment occurred when Briton Jack Gower crashed at full speed into the course’s net fencing, losing a ski and tumbling awkwardly.

He waved his hand to the crowd to indicate he was okay and was able to ski to the end of the course under his own strength

after the race was temporarily suspended.

The sport is still mourning the death of French skier David Poisson in a training accident in Alberta on Nov. 13.

The next stop for the men is Beaver Creek, where there will be Super-G, downhill and giant slalom events on Dec. 1-3. (rtr)

Britain’s Prince Harry to marry U.S. actress Meghan Markle

LONDON - Britain’s Prince Harry and his U.S. actress girlfriend Meghan Markle announced on Monday they were engaged and would get married in the spring of next year.

Queen Elizabeth’s grandson Harry, 33, currently fifth-in-line to the British throne, and Markle, 36, best known for her role in the U.S. TV legal drama “Suits”, got engaged earlier this month.

“Prince Harry has informed Her Majesty The Queen and other close members of his family. Prince Harry has also sought and received the blessing of Ms Markle’s parents,” a statement issued by Clarence House, Prince Charles’ official London residence, said.

A spokesman for Buckingham Palace said the queen, who had to give her assent for the union, and her husband Prince Philip were delighted.

The couple met in July 2016 after they were introduced through friends.

Prince Harry publicly confirmed their relationship months later in a rebuke to the media, which had been intruding into Markle’s private life. But it was not until September that they made their first public appearance together at the Invictus Games in Toronto, a sports event for wounded veterans.

“We’re in love,” Markle told Vanity Fair magazine in an interview that month. “I’m sure there will be a time when we will have to come forward and present ourselves and have stories to tell, but I hope what people will understand is that this is our time.

“It’s part of what makes it so special, that it’s just ours.

But we’re happy. Personally, I love a great love story.”

The youngest son of heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles and his first wife Princess Diana, Harry was once the wild child of the royal family who admitted smoking cannabis and getting drunk when under the legal age limit.

West Kalimantan Governor Cornelis, who serves as the regional organizing committee head, said the provincial administration would do its best to ensure the event runs smoothly. Government initiates rejuvenation program for North Sumatra`s palm oil plantations

SERDANG BEDAGAI - The government has initiated a program to rejuvenate palm oil plantations in North Sumatra spread across 9,109.29 hectares in 12 districts. Serdang Bedagai, Langkat, South Labuhan Batu, Labuhan Batu, Asahan, Batubara, Simalungun, North Labuhan Batu, North Padan Lawas, Padang Lawas, Deli Serdang, and Central Tapanuli are the districts outlined for the implementation of the program.

“The province has a total of 470 thousand hectares of palm oil plantations, of which at least 350 thousand hectares need to be rejuvenated.

Despite the wide area, we should rejuvenate the trees to increase their productivity,” President Joko Widodo noted in his speech in Dolok Masihul Sub-district of Serdang Bedagai

District, North Sumatra, on Monday.

Widodo said the trees aged between 25 and 30 years were not productive and should be rejuvenated.

The government, through the People`s Palm Oil Replanting Program, is providing funds to farmers to conduct replanting activities in their palm oil plantations.

“Palm oil is the green gold of our country, as Indonesia is one of the biggest producers of palm oil not only in Asia or South Asia but also globally,” the president noted. He said Indonesia also produces raw materials needed to manufacture soaps, cosmetics, margarine, cooking oil, and pharmaceuticals.

Palm oil is also one of the raw materials for producing biodiesel fuel used in vehicles. Widodo re-

marked that Indonesia is aiming to become the producer of palm oil derivative products.

“The industrial management of palm oil should be improved.

We should boost ways to manage, preserve, and replant the fields,” Widodo noted. Besides this, the government had rejuvenated palm oil fields in South Sumatra Province that are located in Musi Banyuasin District, spanning 4,100 hectares, in last October.

The total area of palm oil plantations in Indonesia reaches 11.9 million hectares, of which at least 4.6 million hectares belong to the private sector. Palm oil trees to be rejuvenated are aged over 25 years and produce less than 10 tons of palm oil fruits per year. (ant)

BUSINESS Euro at 2-month high on upbeat German sentiment data, political hopes TOKYO - The euro hit a two-month high versus the dollar and held firm against other major currencies on Monday thanks to strong German business confidence and reduced anxiety about political instability in Europe’s biggest economy.

The euro fetched $1.1929, little changed from late U.S. levels last week after having hit a high of $1.1946, its highest level in two months.

The common currency now faces a test at $1.1965. That level is the 76.4 percent retracement of its decline from a 2 1/2-year peak of $1.2092 touched on Sept 8 to a 3-1/2-month low of $1.1553 set on Nov 7.

It has gained 3.2 percent from that low.

The euro rose to 133.24 yen, its highest since Nov 16 and it firmed on the British pound to 0.8978 pound , edging to near this month’s peak of 0.9014.

The German business confidence index compiled by the Ifo economic institute hit a record high in November, in another sign of strong growth in the euro zone’s largest economy.

The upbeat data was followed by positive political developments after German Chancellor Angela Merkel - whose chances for a fourth term were plunged into doubt a week ago when three-way coalition talks with the pro-business Free Democrats (FDP) and Greens collapsed - was handed a political lifeline by the Social Democrats (SDP).

That helped ease worries about political instability in the country as Leaders Merkel’s conservative party agreed on Sunday to pursue a “grand coalition” with the SPD. In contrast, the dollar lacked momentum of its own as persistently low inflation is seen as undermining the case for the Federal Reserve’s rate hikes.

Market players are looking to the Congressional hearing on Fed Chair nominee Jerome Powell on Tuesday.

President Donald Trump’s tax reform plan is also in focus. Trump is due to meet Senate Republicans on Tuesday to discuss the party’s efforts to pass tax reform legislation.

“First the Republicans have to agree on a plan between the Senate and the House of Representatives. Then that plan would need to be approved by the both chambers.

That would need considerable time and effort,” said Shin Kadota, senior strategist at Barclays.

The dollar index stood flat at 92.801, near two-month low of 92.675 touched on Friday.

BEIJING - China’s leaders are likely to maintain this year’s growth target of “around 6.5 percent” in 2018, even as they ratchet up efforts to prevent a destabilising build-up of debt in the world’s second-largest economy, according to policy sources.

Policymakers will be under pressure to balance efforts to tackle debt with the need to keep growth on a steady path, they said. Investor concerns over a crackdown on debt was highlighted last week when a sell-off in bonds spread to the stock market.

Top policymakers are expected to gather in December for the annual Central Economic Work Conference, which investors watch closely for policy priorities for the year ahead, amid a crackdown on riskier banking and investment activities. “Next year’s growth target could be similar to this year’s,” said a source who is close to policy discussions within the government. “It’s OK as long as we are able to secure growth of 6.5 percent.”

President Xi Jinping said at the Communist Party Congress in October that China must defuse “major risks” in the economy, and fight poverty and pollution. But he is also committed to meeting a goal set by the previous administration of doubling gross domestic product in the decade to 2020, to turn China into a “modestly prosperous” nation. That means that growth needs to be around 6.5 percent in each of the next three years.

The urgency to address debt and property risks was highlighted by a warning on the sidelines of the congress from the central bank chief, Zhou Xiaochuan, of the risk of a “Minsky moment” - a reference to a sudden collapse in asset prices after long periods of growth fuelled by debt. “Growth cannot be too low as we still need to build a modestly prosperous society as outlined at the party congress,” said a second source.

Both sources, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, are involved in internal policy discussions and offer advice to Chinese policymakers but are not part of the final decision-making process. Fears of a crackdown on debt has rattled markets, with pressure on bond yields spilling over into the stock market last week, with shares experiencing their biggest selloff in months on Thursday. “The market feels great pains once you tighten a bit, the bond market has been falling sharply. This may trigger systemic risks if we cannot handle well,” said one of the sources.

TREADING WARILY China’s economy grew 6.7 percent last year, a 26-year low, and was targeted to grow around 6.5 percent this year. But it has grown at an annual 6.9 percent in the first three quarters on strong demand for Chinese exports and sustained state spending. That has the economy on track to pick up pace for the first time in seven years, and means 6.5 percent growth over the next few years would be enough to meet the 2020 growth target.

That has been taken as a signal that the focus will be on reducing non-financial corporate debt, which at 165 percent of gross domestic product is the highest among major economies, according to data from the Bank of International Settlements. At the same time, the sources said the central bank was expected to keep a slight tightening bias in policy settings.

Central bank data showed the weighted average lending rate for non-financial firms, a key indicator of corporate funding costs, edged up 9 basis points in the third quarter to 5.76 percent, following a rise of 14 basis points in the second quarter and a rise of 26 basis points in the first.

The average mortgage lending rate rose 32 basis points in the third quarter to 5.01 percent, after rising by a total of 17 basis points in the first half of the year. “Deleveraging - no matter it’s in the financial or corporate sector - will definitely put downward pressure on the economy,” one of the policy sources said.(rtr)

DENPASAR - Bali’s government has warned locals near the Mount Agung volcano to stay away from rivers because of cold lava ploughing down the volcano’s slopes.

Shocking footage shows a lahar – a type of mudflow containing volcanic debris and water – powerfully flowing through a river valley near Mount Agung. Despite having the consistency of concrete, the combination of water and ash can flow down river valleys at rapid speeds.

A spokesman for Indonesia’s Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) warned against going close to rivers near Mount Agung.

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho warned said on Twitter: “Watch out for lahar floods (cold lava) around Mt Agung. “Lahar floods have already occurred in several places on the slopes.” Lahars were seen flowing down the Yeh Sah River in Karangasem, according to Coconuts Bali and farmlands in the area had already reportedly been damaged by the mud.

A Bali police official said: “The ash released from Mount Agung was hit by rainwater and has now become mud in the Yeh Sah River.” The BNPB reported that nearly 40,000 people have been evacuated from near Bali’s erupting Mount Agung volcano but thousands more had yet to

Mount Agung’s mounting threat forced the Indonesian Government to close the local airport, grounding more than 2000 flights and leaving thousands of tourists stranded on the island.

Bali airport has been closed and several major airlines have announced they are cancelling flights to and from the tourist hotspot due to the ash cloud. Mengening Temple, a Spiritual Destination in Gianyar

A side from nature and culture, Bali also offers a spiritual tourism because it has several historic places sanctified by the Hindu community. One of them is the Mengening Temple at Saraseda village, Tampaksiring, Gianyar.

Inside the temple, there is a spring used as a place to invoke

holy water as a means of ceremony for Balinese Hindus. Besides, there is a pool that can be used for selfcleaning. It is divided into two, namely a special bathing pool for men and women.

Before entering the bathing pool, visitors are advised to use cloth and then step down some stairs to get to the pool. Local people are accustomed to using the pool for bathing, self-cleaning. Moreover, on certain holidays, many Balinese Hindus come to the temple to do

self-purificatory rite to get rid of spiritual impurities.

Local people visit the temple almost every afternoon to bathe with friends or family. “We bathe here almost every day. The atmosphere is cool and the water is fresh, so that the body and mind feel fresh as well. We love the atmosphere in this peaceful and quiet temple.

When bathing, we usually offer some offerings to invoke salvation,” said a local resident.

Mengening Temple implements the tri mandala or three horizontal spatial dimension concept, namely the nista mandala (outermost), madya mandala (middle) and uttama mandala (innermost courtyard).

In the outermost courtyard of the Mengening Temple sits a garden with pancaka tirtha. This garden is used as a place of self-purification by local deities. In some places, there is also a source of holy water commonly taken by the community for ritual purposes.

According to the temple attendant, the spring of holy water includes the Tirtha Keben, Tirtha Sudamala, Tirtha Melela, Tirtha Soka, Tirtha Megelung, Tirtha Tunggang and Tirtha Telaga Waja.

Meanwhile, in the area of Pancaka tirtha garden sits the Tirtha Parisuda, Tirtha Pengelukatan, Tirtha Pengulapan, Tirtha Keris and Tirtha Kamaning. Visitors are not allowed to bathe in the springs to prevent the water from receding and disappearing.

In the middle courtyard there are some buildings such as gamelan pavilion, wooden split drum (kulkul) tower, Bale Pegambahan and Bale Pegat. Then, the innermost courtyard consists of some shrines including three-tiered meru shrine as the abode of Ida Bathara Prasada Agung, the chamber is the abode of deities of Gunung Kawi, Limas shrine for deity of Tirta Empul, Pemaruman, Bale Saka Ulu as the abode of Lord Shiva, Paselang pavilion, Bale Pecanangan and Bale Penganteb.

This causes horticulture commodities of Indonesia especially Bali to be often hampered when exported. The export of mangosteen commodities, for instance, is rejected by Vietnam. Previously, China also rejected the import of mangosteen from Indonesia.

Other than from Bali, the mangosteen from other regions in Indonesia is also denied to enter Vietnam. This happens because the condition of mangosteen from Indonesia is no longer fresh due to fumigation. This condition is being discussed in the central government to find a solution.

Division Head of Plant Food and Horticulture at the Bali Agriculture Agency, I Wayan Sunatra, said that fumigation is the policy of the new Quarantine Agency. It is done because previously the other horticultural commodities contain plant-disturbing organisms.

The Quarantine Agency does not want to take risks, so all commodities when arriving at the container are fumigated. “On that account, mangosteen perishes. Necessarily, it may not be fumigated,” he said on Friday (Nov. 24). Currently, it is being discussed in the central government both with the Director General of Horticulture in charge of mangosteen division and Angkasa Pura to find a solution.

So far, the government has facilitated farmers in their post-harvest time by providing post-harvest wards to clean up mangosteen so as to comply with the SOPs such as tool to soak the mangosteen, special place et cetera. There is no special post-harvest treatment for mangosteen including paraffin administration because fresh organic fruit has become the branding of local horticultural products from Bali. Meanwhile, the use of cold storage does not affect the death of germs or bacteria in the mangosteen. “Cold storage only functions for preservation,” he said.

Strict export rules for horticultural commodities should be supported by technology to encourage Indonesian exports. Although there is no limit to the export of mangosteen to Vietnam, China or other countries, Indonesia has not been able to export more. The challenge of exporting horticultural commodities is season. Rainy season makes the production of mangosteen reduced. Export of mangosteen from Bali previously amounting to 4,500 tons in previous years, in 2016 could only export 2,500 tons.

Trade competition also caused commodities from Indonesia to be rejected or complicated. Previously, mangosteen was one of the commodities rejected by China because it contains pests. According to him, it is only a reason to reject imports from Indonesia.

“They import mangosteen from Malaysia, whereas it comes from us. China is still importing mangosteen from Indonesia but through Malaysia,” he said. (kmb42)

SINGARAJA — Following the second phreatic eruption of Mount Agung and the ash-fall that followed, thousands of residents of Karangasem evacuated back to Buleleng. People from disaster-prone areas (KRB) II and KRB III have began to arrive at the evacuation post on Sunday morning (Nov. 26). The waves of evacuees increased as it is believed that Mount Agung will soon be spewing magma from its crater.

When the first phreatic eruption occurred on Tuesday (Nov. 21), residents of Karangasem started to evacuate to a number of different locations still within a 12 km radius of the crater. After the smoke subsided, the villagers returned to their homes. However after the second phreatic eruption on Saturday afternoon (Nov 25), they decided to evacuate again. The smoke coming out of the crater of Mount Agung was much more concentrated in the second eruption and many believe this is a sign that the great mountain will erupt soon.

The evacuation authorities decided that residents of Karangasem should leave the area for some time and evacuate to the sub-district of Kubu. On Sunday afternoon, residents of Dukuh village were evacuated to Tembok village. No less than 3,100 people are now living in temporary shelters such as empty warehouses and public facilities where they had previously been evacuated to. Residents of Ban village have also began to take up temporary shelter in Les

village, Tejakula where they had been evacuated to when the alert level was raised.

One evacuee named Luh Rumadani, said that the emergence of magma from the crater on Saturday night at 23:00, made her panic. Having returned home she then immediately rushed to the evacuation post located in the quarry area of Bumi Pasir Mandiri. “ Currently, there is only smoke so we go home. But as soon as it looks like fire on the mountain, we will evacuate”, she said.

Meanwhile, headman of Dukuh, I Gede Sumiarsa, said that since smoke has been continuously billowing out of the crater since Saturday night (Nov 25), residents of Dukuh have evacuated to Tembok Village where they were immediately directed to public facilitates that had been prepared for them, including the village hall and a warehouse near the headman’s office. Evacuees are not allowed to set up tents during the rainy season. “ Today (Nov 26), all residents of Dukuh village have been asked to evacuate to Buleleng”, he said.

Headman Sumiarsa said they are still facing serious obstacles in evacuating thousands of people.

Six trucks were used to transport 500 residents. The Kubu district police provided four of these trucks.

The damaged road in the hamlet above the hill made the lack of vehicles even more challenging to deal with. “We do not have enough trucks to transport everyone and the road up there is not paved, so it makes it hard to evacuate people’ he explained.

Volunteer Coordinator at Tembok village, Dewa Willy Asmawan, said that village officials are ready to receive up to 8,000 evacuees, provided that the evacuees are ready to help manage the evacuation post. It is important that the evacuation process takes place in an orderly and cooperative manner.

“We are ready to help the evacuees and public facilities are ready to accommodate many evacuees”, he said, adding that if these buildings become filled local residents are ready to welcome evacuees in their homes. (kmb38)

Pope starts Myanmar trip in shadow of Rohingya crisis

YANGON - Myanmar’s civilian leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, will soon visit Beijing, state media said on Monday, as the southeast Asian nation appears to draw closer to its northern neighbour, China, amid global criticism over an exodus of Rohingya refugees.

Myanmar has bristled at pressure from Western nations over its armed forces’ brutal response to August attacks on security posts by Rohingya Muslim militants in the western state of Rakhine.

The United States and the United Nations have accused Myanmar of “ethnic cleansing” and called for the military to be held accountable over allegations of killings, rape and arson that sent more than 620,000 Rohingya fleeing to Bangladesh.

China, however, has backed what Myanmar officials call a legitimate counter-insurgency operation in Rakhine, and stepped in to prevent a resolution on the crisis at the U.N. Security Council.

News of Suu Kyi’s visit comes after Chinese President Xi Jinping and Chinese military leaders wel-

comed Myanmar’s powerful army chief Min Aung Hlaing last week and pledged closer cooperation.

The state-run daily Global New Light of Myanmar said Nobel Peace laureate Suu Kyi would “soon” depart to attend a Communist Party of China-hosted forum of world political leaders in Beijing.

Suu Kyi’s spokesman Zaw Htay could not be reached for more details, but the meeting begins on Thursday and runs until Dec. 3, according to China’s official news agency Xinhua.

Myanmar is in the international spotlight this week as Pope Francis makes the first visit by a head of the Roman Catholic church to the Buddhist-majority country.

He has previously spoken out about the treatment of minority Muslims to whom Myanmar denies citizenship, but some Christians fear doing so in the country could provoke a backlash.

Many in Myanmar refuse to recognise the name Rohingya, preferring to call them “Bengalis” to suggest they belong in neighbouring Bangladesh. (rtr)

YANGON - Pope Francis arrived in Myanmar on Monday on a delicate visit for the leader of the Roman Catholic church to a majority-Buddhist country that the United States has accused of “ethnic cleansing” against its Muslim Rohingya people.

The pope will also visit Bangladesh, where more than 620,000 Rohingya have fled to escape what Amnesty International has dubbed “crimes against humanity”.

The Myanmar army has denied the accusations of murder, rape, torture and forcible displacement.

After leaving Rome, the pope told reporters on his plane: “They say it’s too hot (in Myanmar). I’m sorry, but let’s hope it will at least be fruitful.”

The pope was set to hold a private meeting with Myanmar army chief, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, at 6 p.m. (1130 GMT) in St. Mary’s Cathedral in the heart of the largest city of Yangon, where he arrived earlier, a Vatican spokesman said.

Members of ethnic minority groups in traditional dress welcomed Francis at Yangon airport, and children presented him with flowers as he stepped off his plane.

He waved through an open window at dozens of children waving Vatican and Myanmar flags and T-shirts with the motto of the trip -

“love and peace” - as he set off in a light blue Toyota car for St. Mary’s Cathedral.

Only about 700,000 of Myanmar’s 51 million people are Roman Catholic. Thousands of them travelled by train and bus to Yangon, and they joined crowds at several roadside points along the way from the airport to catch a glimpse of the pope. “We come here to see the Holy Father. It happens once in hundreds of years,” said Win Min Set, a community leader who brought a group of 1,800 Catholics from the south and west of the country.

“He is very knowledgeable when it comes to political affairs. He will handle the issue smartly,” he said, referring to the sensitivity of the pope’s discussions about the Rohingya.

Large numbers of riot police were mobilised in Yangon but there were no signs of any protests.

The trip is so delicate that some papal advisers have warned him against even saying the word “Rohingya”, lest he set off a diplomatic

incident that could turn the country’s military and government against minority Christians.

The Rohingya exodus from Rakhine state to Bangladesh’s southern tip began at the end of August, when Rohingya militants attacked security posts and the Myanmar army launched a counter-offensive.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson last week called the military operation “ethnic cleansing” and threatened targeted sanctions for “horrendous atrocities”.

Myanmar’s government has denied most of the accusations made against it, and the army says its own investigation found no evidence of wrongdoing by troops.

The future looks bright: light pollution rises on a global scale

WASHINGTON - The world is getting brighter, but scientists say that may not be a good thing.

Researchers said on Wednesday satellite data showed that Earth’s artificially lit outdoor surface at night grew by about 2 percent annually in brightness and area from 2012 to 2016, underscoring concerns about the ecological effects of light pollution on people and animals.

The rate of growth observed in developing countries was much faster than in already brightly lit rich countries.

The researchers said the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather satellite data may understate the situation because its sensor cannot detect some of the LED lighting that is becoming more widespread, specifically blue light.

“Earth’s night is getting brighter. And I actually didn’t expect it to be so uniformly true that so many countries would be getting brighter,” said physicist Christopher Kyba of the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences, who led the research published in the journal Science Advances.

With few exceptions, growth in nighttime light was observed throughout South America, Africa and Asia.

Light remained stable in only a few countries. These included some of the world’s brightest such as Italy, Netherlands, Spain and the United States, although the researchers said the satellite sensor’s “blindness” to

some LED light may mask an actual increase.

Australia’s lit area decreased due to wildfires.

Nighttime light declined in war-hit Syrian and Yemen.

Ecologist Franz Hölker of Germany’s LeibnizInstitute for Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB) said light pollution has ecological consequences, with natural light cycles disrupted by artificial light introduced into the nighttime environment. Increased sky glow can affect human sleep, he noted.

“In addition to threatening 30 percent of vertebrates that are nocturnal and over 60 percent of invertebrates that are nocturnal, artificial light also affects plants and microorganisms,” Hölker said. “It threatens biodiversity through changed night habits, such as reproduction or migration patterns, of many different species: insects, amphibians, fish, birds, bats and other animals.”

Kyba said nighttime lighting also obscures the stars that people have witnessed for millennia.

Experts had hoped the growing use of highly efficient LED lighting might lessen energy usage worldwide. The new findings indicate use of artificial lighting instead is growing, increasing energy demand.

“While we know that LEDs save energy in specific projects, for example when a city transitions all of its street lighting from sodium lamps to LED, when we look at our data and we look at the national and the global level, it indicates that these savings are being offset by either new or brighter lights in other places,” Kyba said. Virtual reality boom brings giant robots, cyberpunk castles to China

GUIYANG - Giant robots and futuristic cyberpunk castles rise out of lush mountain slopes on the outskirts of Guiyang, the capital of one of China’s poorest provinces.

Welcome to China’s first virtual reality theme park, which aims to ride a boom in demand for virtual entertainment that is set to propel tenfold growth in the country’s virtual reality market, to hit almost $8.5 billion by 2020.

The 330-acre (134-hectare) park in southwestern Guizhou province promises 35 virtual reality attractions, from shoot-’em-up games and virtual rollercoasters to tours with interstellar aliens of the region’s most scenic spots.

“After our attraction opens, it will change the entire tourism structure of Guizhou province as well as China’s southwest,” Chief Executive Chen Jianli told Reuters.

“This is an innovative attraction, because it’s just different,” he said in an interview at the park, part of which is scheduled to open next February.

The $1.5-billion Oriental Science Fiction Valley park, is part of China’s thrust to develop new drivers of growth centred on trends such as gaming, sports and cuttingedge technology, to cut reliance on traditional industries.

In the push to become a centre of

innovative tech, Guizhou is luring firms such as Apple Inc, which has sited its China data centre there, while the world’s largest radio telescope is in nearby Pingtang county.

The park says it is the world’s first of its kind, although virtual reality-based attractions from the United States to Japan already draw interest from consumers and video gamers seeking a more immersive experience.

The Guiyang park will offer tourists bungee jumps from a huge Transformer-like robot, and a studio devoted to producing virtual reality movies. Most rides will use VR goggles and motion simulators to thrill users.

“You feel like you’re really there,” said Qu Zhongjie, the park’s manager of rides. “That’s our main feature.”

China’s virtual reality market is expected to grow tenfold to 55.6 billion yuan ($8.4 billion) by the end of the decade, state-backed think-tank CCID has said.

Farmers in the nearby village of Zhangtianshui said they were concerned about pollution from big developments, but looked forward to the economic benefits a new theme park would bring.

DENPASAR — Most people want to be successful, however when asked most Balinese people would say they prefer to be a successful worker or top executive than being a successful entrepreneur. Most Balinese people are strongly involved with their culture and local wisdom practices but they are also more focused on inheriting wealth and ingenuity than they are on taking risks to try something new like being an entrepreneur in their own homeland.

“Despite the many business opportunities available in Bali, only a handful of Balinese want to develop their own businesses despite very promising prospects as a world class tourist destination with constant visitors from all over the world”, said Denpasar education expert, Prof.

Rumawan explained that there are many factors that contribute to Balinese people not wanting to seize business opportunities. Lack of capital is not the main factor, he said but rather the lack of business development networks. Actually, building relationships with various take-holders is very influential in developing businesses in Bali. “This does not mean we leave it entirely to the stakeholders (investors), but as Balinese we have to open ourselves to business opportunities by involving them as our clients”, he continued.

The use of information technologies, language skills and competitiveness are also factors that influence business opportunities, explained Rumawan saying that utilizing these with integrity will allow Balinese people to compete globally and not be left behind by the times.

“Balinese people have a lot of ego which makes them less productive.

They should be more open to collaborating. Also they do not tend to challenge themselves in being competitive because they are always looking to be comfortable without thinking about future generations”, he said.

Dr. I.B. Radendra Suastama, expressed a similar opinion saying that most Balinese people consider that being an entrepreneur will lower their social status in the community. Actually in order to become a successful entrepreneur, you must start on the small scale, he said. Also, the feeling of being native to Bali makes many people here spoiled and lack diligence in their work.

Meanwhile, regarding the quality of human resources, Radendra said that Balinese people are just as capable as others. However, the fundamental issue lies in more fundamental issues related to attitude.

Not wanting to be the first one to take a risk and attention to prestige are attitudes that need to change, he said.

“If we look at things than prestige then we will not feel that we are degenerating by working in the informal sector or start a business from the ground –up. Then we can be truly competitive because we have very good basic qualities that are just as good as those of our friends from outside the island”, added Chairman of the STIMI Handayani Education Foundation Denpasar.

He also said that the way that Balinese places value on the efforts of others also b=needs to change. Valuing wealth or position should not be placed above pioneering efforts. “ So the problem is with our ‘ideology’ or value system. We need to change our way of thinking if we want to be winners instead of losers, performers instead of spectators. We need to take advantage of opportunities not just worship prestige, we should prioritize achievements and persistence. Now it depends on us, whether we want to work and be entrepreneurs. We have great social capital, we just need to use it optimally for the sake of our communal welfare”, added Rahendra. (win)

Head of Gianyar Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), A.A. Gde Oka Digjaya, said that a number of natural disasters occurred in recent days.

“Responding to such incidents, the officials of BPBD Gianyar have been alerted. Every report is immediately followed up,” he said.

Oka Digjaya pointed out, the fallen tree disaster closed that road access occurred at Susut hamlet, Buahan, Payangan subdistrict on Thursday (Nov. 23).

Fallen trees happened due to heavy rain and soil on the roots of the trees is unstable. BPBD officers immediately came down to the location to do the cleaning.

Last Friday at 06:30 Local Time, it rained heavily

so that coconut trees uprooted and blocked the road section on Saba Beach at Pering hamlet, Blahbatuh. A few hours later, landslide occurred at Timbul hamlet, Pupuan, Tegallalang.

The landslide brought the material of trees to hamper the road. The tree carried by landslide belongs to champak with the height of six meters.

Oka Digjaya said that to address the incident of fallen tree, his agency immediately trimmed so the road access is not disturbed. Besides, the landslide materials accumulating in the roads are immediately sprayed so as not to be slippery. “In the weather like this, there are many landslides and fallen trees. Hopefully, people could be more vigilant,” he said.

He said the disaster-prone areas include highlands such as Payangan, Tegallalang and Tampaksiring. They belong to vulnerable area because the soil condition is unstable. “When the weather is bad, people are expected to avoid prone areas to disaster,” he added. (kmb35)

DENPASAR - Overly erotic or ‘porn style’ Joged Bumbung is clearly contrary to the aesthetics and ethics of Balinese dance. Not only does this style of joged disturb public order could also threaten the status of Joged Bumbung as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage.

“It is necessary to prohibit ‘pornographic style joged’ as it disturbs public order. Besides it is not good for the moral education of children and teenagers who see it. Balinese dance does not have any erotic or pornographic dances – let alone dances that involved removing garments”, said the humanist I Made Bandem when contacted on Sunday (Nov. 26).

According to Bandem, the Governor of Bali’s Circular No. 6393/2016 gives legal power to ban performances of ‘pornographic joged’. The regents / mayor as well as the District Cultural Office, Customary Village General Assembly (MUDP), chief sof customary villages and the Bali Police should take immediate action in enforcing the gubernatorial circular.

Revenue from IMTA decreases

Denpasar - Revenue from Expatriate Employment Pass (IMTA) is targeted to reach IDR 17 billion by the end of 2017. This target is less than last year’s target of IDR 2 billion. The Government of Bali’s Manpower and Energy and Mineral Resources (ERM) says that this indicates a success in that strategic job positions are increasingly being filled by the local workforce.

“Actually we do not hope for increased income from the IMTAs as this would indicate that job positions in Bali are being filled by foreign workers. The current decline in income form IMTA indicated that we have been successful in having more jobs filled by local workers”, said Head of Bali Manpower and ERM, Ni Luh Made Wiratmi, recently.

According to Wiratmi, the nearly 25 percent decline in IMTA income is also due to district 1 municipal regulation concerning IMTA extensions. Foreign workers who only work in one district apply for their IMTA in that district, however those who work across districts1municipality apply for their permits from the the province.

“In the past, there were about 3,000 foreign workers but this has gone down about 25 percent to 2000 workers. There is a rule about transfer of knowledge, whereby every foreign worker but be accompanied by at least one Indonesian worker”, she explained.

Wiratmi added companies must pay IDR 15 million a month for IMTAs but in fact Indonesian workers – Balinese included, are no less intelligent or competent. If companies hire Indonesian workers instead, they do not have to apply for and pay for IMTAs nor pay foreign workers large salaries.

“If we want to show appreciation for our own people and our products, why it is so difficult?

Investment is a different matter and there are rules governing this.

But if it is just a matter of hiring expensive foreign workers, it is better to hire Indonesian workers that are just as competent, skilled, experienced and in no way inferior to foreign workers”, she said. Wiratmi went on to say that with more job opportunities being open to locals, Indonesian funds would not leave the country. (kmb32)

According to experience of 1963, big eruption takes a month

AMLAPURA - According to Head of Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation, I Gede Suantika, Mount Agung’s recent volcanic activity shows smoke wafting thicker and higher out of the crater, energy pressure getting stronger and the intrusion of lava at the bottom of the crater increasing in volume.

“We still hope that there will only be an effusive eruption which means that the lava filling the bottom of the volcano spills downwards. But we are concerned about the possibility of a sudden addition of volume discharge coming out in a short amount of time as the lave channel is quite small. This would likely cause a big eruption. This is what we are worried about”, said Suantika.

Suantika predicts that as greater amounts of smoke and ash leave the crater, the hole at the bottom of the crater will be destroyed and new holes created. In 1963, said

Suantika, it took one month of smoke and ash coming out of the mountain for the biggest eruption to occur. He added that he is confident that at that time the crater was not as deep as it is now, so as soon as lava came out of the crater, it spills over the edge. “ So for a month, there were puffs, eruptions and roads before the lava started to spill out”, he explained.

When asked about the ash and smoke that is now continuously coming out of the crater, Suantika affirmed that it was wafting about 3,380 meters upwards but leaning slightly eastward. “Deep and shallow volcanic earthquake are no longer being recorded and no longer necessary. What is being recorded is only lava flow tremors”, said Suantika. The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation will be evaluate whether the alert level should be raised and discuss the matter with PVMBG team. (kmb41)

Mariah Carey Cancels Three More Christmas Concerts Due to Health Concerns

LOS ANGELES - Mariah Carey is taking a brief respite before setting out on her holiday concerts. The singer, 47, announced she would be resting due to doctor’s orders, which led to a cancellation of three more of her Christmas concerts.

“I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving with loved ones; it’s certainly nice to remember what we are grateful for!” she wrote on Instagram. “Like most, I’m thankful for my overall health… for which I need a bit more time to get right. Doctors have ordered a few extra days of rest before I can finally fly to New York and take the stage for my Christmas Tour.”

She continued, “While this news disappoints me to share, I am grateful to be on the mend and for the support from all of you – it means the world to me! See you from the stage soon darlings! ?, Mariah” Carey revealed the canceled dated on her website — Nov. 27, Nov. 28 and Dec. 1. Her tour will resume with her New York date’s at the Beacon Theatre – Dec. 2, 4 and 5 – will be followed by three shows in Europe before continuing on to Las Vegas for five shows at The Colosseum at Caesar’s Palace.

In mid-November, the singer canceled her first few “All I Want for Christmas Is You” concerts due to illness.

“Lambs! Just in time for the holiday gift-giving season, it seems I’ve received a present of my own; a lovely upper respiratory infection after last week’s flu. Bleak!” she wrote in a statement posted to her Twitter account. “You know there is nothing I love more than celebrating the holidays with my festive Christmas show, but I have to take my doctor’s orders and rest until he says I can sing on stage.”

“Until then, unfortunately, I have to cancel the first several shows of my upcoming Christmas tour. I’m going to do all that I can so that I can see you soon,” she continued, ending her note with a few festive emojis. (rtr)

LOS ANGELES - Disney-Pixar’s “Coco” handily won the Thanksgiving holiday box office over the second weekend of Warner Bros.-DC Entertainment’s “Justice League,” with $71.2 million at 3,987 North American sites during the Wednesday-Sunday period.

“Justice League” pulled in $60 million at 4,051 locations during the same timeframe. The superhero action-adventure, the fifth in the DC Extended Universe, has totaled $172 million in its first 10 days.

“Coco” posted for the third-best Thanksgiving holiday opening ever, trailing three other Disney titles -- “Frozen” with $93 million in 2013, “Moana” with $82 million in 2017 and “Toy Story 3” with $80 million in 2010.

Audiences surveyed by comScore’s PostTrak gave “Coco” strong ratings with 66% calling it “excellent,” and another 23% rating it “very good.” Surveys also showed 77% of viewers saying they would “definitely recommend” the movie to friends and 20% saying they would watch it again in a theater.

“Coco,” directed by Lee Unkrich and co-directed by Adrian Molina,

is based on the traditions surrounding the Day of the Dead holiday in Mexico and centers on a 12-yearold boy who dreams of becoming a musician and explores his family history in the Land of the Dead. The studio has not released a price for the movie. Disney-Pixar titles are usually budgeted in the $175 million to $200 million range.

“Justice League,” which teams up the DC characters in the same manner as Disney-Marvel’s superheroes, is already in the top 15 of titles released in 2017 and has opened with a B+ CinemaScore. It’s been the lowest performer among the DC Extended Universe. “Wonder Woman” grossed $206.3 million in its first 10 days in June and “Suicide Squad” took in $222.6 million in its first 10 days in August 2016.

Indonesia orders immediate evacuation as highest alert issued for Bali volcano

DENPASAR - Indonesia closed the airport on the tourist island of Bali on Monday and ordered 100,000 residents living near a glowing volcano spewing columns of ash to evacuate immediately, warning that the first major eruption in 54 years could be “imminent”. The airport was closed for 24 hours from Monday morning, disrupting 445 flights and some 59,000 passengers, after Mount Agung, which killed hundreds of people in 1963, sent volcanic ash high into the sky, and officials said cancellations could be extended.

“Plumes of smoke are occasionally accompanied by explosive eruptions and the sound of weak blasts that can be heard up to 12 km (7 miles) from the peak,” the Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said in a statement after raising the alert from three to its highest level of four.

“The potential for a larger eruption is imminent,” it said, referring to a visible glow of magma at Mount Agung’s peak overnight, and warning residents to evacuate a danger zone at a radius of 8-10

km (5-6 miles). Sutopo, a BNPB spokesman, said there had been no casualties so far and 40,000 people had left the area, but tens of thousands still needed to move.

Video footage shared by the agency showed volcanic mud flows (lahar) on the mountainside. Lahar carrying mud and large boulders can destroy houses, bridges and roads in its path.

Bali, famous for its surf, beaches and temples, attracted nearly 5 million visitors last year, and its

airport serves as a transport hub for the chain of islands in Indonesia’s eastern archipelago. But tourism has slumped in parts of Bali since September when Agung’s volcanic tremors began to increase and the alert level was raised to maximum before being lowered in October when seismic activity calmed.

“I’m not worried (but) my friends in Russia are a little bit,” said a Russian tourist, who only wanted to be identified as Dmitry, at an observation post in Rendang in Bali’s east.

Agung rises majestically over eastern Bali to a height of just over 3,000 metres (9,800 feet). Northeastern Bali is relatively undeveloped compared to the more heavily populated southern tourist hub of Kuta-Seminyak-Nusa Dua.

EXPLOSIVE ERUPTION Indonesia’s Vulcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Centre (PVMBG), which is using drones, satellite imagery and other equipment, said predictions were difficult in the absence of instrumental recordings from the last eruption 54 years ago. In 1963, an eruption of Agung killed more than 1,000 people and razed several villages by hurling out pyroclastic material, hot ash, lava and lahar.

Recordings now show the northeast area of Agung’s peak has swollen in recent weeks “indicating there is fairly strong pressure toward the surface”, PVMBG said.

It warned that if a similar eruption occurred, it could send rocks bigger than fist-size up to 8 km (5 miles) from the summit and volcanic gas to a distance of 10 km (6 miles) within three minutes.
