He overthrew a strongman, brought his country free health care and education, and enlisted Cubans in what he called fights for freedom from Central America to South Africa. Fidel Castro also maintained a steel grip at home, jailing dissidents and gays, controlling freedom of travel and expression and declaring virtually any activity outside his control to be illegitimate.

In the wake of the revolutionary’s death Friday night, human rights groups said they hoped that his brother and successor, Raul Castro, would move faster toward allowing Cubans more freedom of speech, assembly and other basic rights. “The question now is what hu-

man rights will look like in a future Cuba,” Erika Guevara-Rosas, the Americas director for Amnesty International, said Saturday. “The lives of many depend on it.” Under Raul Castro, Cuba has moved away from jailing political prisoners for extended sentences, instead making thousands of short-

term arrests each year that Cuban dissidents say are designed to harass them and disrupt any attempt at political organizations. Cubans today feel freer to criticize their government in public, but any attempt at protest or demonstration is swiftly quashed. Independent journalists operate inside the country but find it nearly impossible to distribute printed material and they report repeated harassment from authorities. Geoff Thale, director of programs at the Washington Office on Latin America, said Fidel Castro’s death meant that hardliners opposed to his younger brother’s modest reforms would be weakened, and “we are hopeful open political debate will pick up.” When discussing their country’s human rights record, Cuban officials along with some rights advocates point out that the revolutionary government under Fidel Castro ran a massive literacy campaign, and dramatically improved the lives of millions of people by providing better access to housing and health care. “For this, his lead-

But she noted that Castro’s nearly half-century in power was also characterized by what she termed “a ruthless suppression of freedom of expression,” including sometimes long prison terms for people who spoke out strongly against the Cuban government. In the early years after the 1959 revolution, hundreds of summary executions were carried out as the nation’s new leaders called for what they described as revolutionary justice. “To the wall!” they chanted as members of deposed President Fulgencio Batista’s government were quickly tried and lined up before firing squads. Cuba still retains the death penalty, with capital punishment carried out by firing squad, although its use has declined over the years. Among the last known cases of firing squad executions included three men charged in the hijacking of a passenger ferry in 2003. The executions coincided with a crack-

down and stiff prison sentences of up to 28 years for 75 of the government’s most vocal critics charged with receiving money from and collaborating with U.S. diplomats to undermine Cuba’s leadership. Under Raul Castro, the yearslong terms for non-violent acts of dissidence have grown rarer, replaced by frequent harassment and short-term arrests. “The Orwellian laws that allowed for their imprisonment — and the imprisonment of thousands before them — remain on the books, and the Cuban government continues to repress individuals and groups who criticize the government or call for human rights,” said Jose Miguel Vivanco, Americas director for Human Rights Watch. IDR 1 trillion needed to develop Nusa Penida Priority given to roads, water, electricity and harbor SEMARAPURA —

The budget needed to accelerate the development in Nusa Penida is almost IDR 1 trillion, said Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika after hodling a joint meeting with nine ministerial representatives on a Bounty Cruise ship on Satruday (Nov. 26). This amount was requested from five ministries and broken down as folows: IDR 759.372 billion from the Ministry of Public Works and Housing, IDR 7.274 billion fro the Ministry of Agriculture IDR 47.9 billion from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, IDR 12.899 billion from the the Ministry of Health, and IDR 3 billion from the Ministry of Education and Culture. “In total this comes to about IDR 1 trillion. Hopefully some of the ministries can meet our request so that in the futur Nusa Penida, Lembongan and Ceningan can really become the golden eggs and the chickens are also gold for all of us in order to improve the welfare of all Balinese people”, said Governor Pastika. Pastika added that the proposals submitted to the ministerial representatives are priorities. In order for things not to remain at the level of simply meeting, matters will be escorted until they are materialised. Balinese officials including the regent of Klungkung were also asked to follow up with the planning and so on so ensure that more concrete action is taken. “Every present, including myself, the regent and others, also signed the minutes of the meeting. The smallest budgetary proposal was submitted to the Ministry of Education and Culture for the construction of a computer lab and equipment for SMPN 2, SMPN 4 and SMPN 6 Nusa Penida junior high school. “We are going to push for these in the national budget amendment 2017. Probably, they will include the computer lab and other smaller budget projects. For larger budget projects, possibly they can be

proposed for the 2018 budget. Our priorities include the roads, water, electricity and harbor” he said. Astawa added that the ring road will extend about 230 km. Now, the existing road is being built along 37 km. In 2017, and 20 km more of road will be added, then in 2018 an additional 30km of ring road will be added. “The existing roads will connect to the ring road”, he explained. Regarding the bridge problem, added Astawa, the construction will being in 2017 by using emergency

funds. An new bridge that can carry cars will be built to connect Ceningan to Nusa Lembingan. “As for Gunaksa harbor, the lack of road access reamins an obstacle. We are still constrained by the Public Works. The current proposed road way has not been approved by the Ministry of Public Works and Housing because it cuts across an arterial road bridge. Her husband works as a handyman and farm laborer but also helps her by seeking out the raw palm ribs that she needs to make her crafts. He climbs nearby ivory coconut palm tress to get 50 petioles used for making her ingke. This amount of raw material takes her about ten days to turn into product.

Yantari explained that she has been making crafts from ingke since she was a young girl. said Having diligently learned this crafts, she tried to create a small independent ingke craft business after she was married. Most months she has some orders, but the amoutns flunctuates a lot. Once she receives an order for 100 pieces in one shot, but this is very rare, she said. The Ministry of Tourism aims to have 15 million tourists visit Indonesia in 2017 and 20 million in 2019. There is some optimism about the likelyhood of this being achieved, given that previsou targets have been exeeded. The 2010 target of 10 million for example was achieved and the 2016 target of 12 million reached 8.36 a of September.

Art and nature intertwined at massive Brazilian park

BRUMADINHO — Smack in the middle of lush eucalyptus forests in Brazil’s heartland, Inhotim Park offers visitors a mix of sensations rarely combined into one experience: art and nature. With more than 700 works of art by more than 100 artists, there is plenty to contemplate. And because those works are spread out across 400 acres, in a forest with over 5,000 species of plants, there is plenty of time to enjoy nature, or reflect on a work you just saw, while going to the next. The park is so sprawling that many people take golf carts from one installation to the next — and even such rides take at least five minutes. “Speed is the enemy of good taste and perfection,” said mining tycoon and park founder Bernardo Paz in a recent interview with The Associated

Press. “The beauty here is more or less the ideal of happiness.” Inhotim (pronounced IN-YOTCHEEM) has become one of the most important art centers in Latin America since opening 10 years ago. It has reached international acclaim thanks to the mix of nature and exhibitions of globally known artists like Chris Burden, Adriana Varejao and Cildo Meireles. Some of the most popular displays include a suspended bronze tree made by Italian Giuseppe Penone and a pavilion where visitors can hear sounds of the earth from 200 meters (yards) down via microphones, a work created by American

Doug Aitken. There is also a braidshaped piece by Tunga that was the first work by a contemporary Brazilian artist shown at the Louvre museum in Paris. “This is a very special place. I was here before and this time I brought my girlfriend,” said Humberto Nogueira, 25, who works in advertising in Sao Paulo. “Everyone should come.” Two million people have visited the park in the last 10 years. But despite its popularity, park administrators worry about sustainability going forward. Brazil, Latin America’s largest economy, is mired in its worst recession in decades, which means Brazilians have less money to travel — even in their own country. The park’s off-the-beaten-track location,

414 miles (667 kilometers) north of Rio de Janeiro, cuts both ways: the remoteness makes it both attractive and relatively hard to get to. And the upkeep of the park, which includes 1,000 staff members, is expensive (park authorities declined to say how much). Looking for new sources of revenue, the park has begun experimenting with renting itself out. The first glimpse of that came earlier this month, when Inhotim opened a space for indie culture festival MECA and allowed hundreds of people to spend the night in their tents. The event, which organizers said was a success, included Grammyaward winner Caetano Veloso. A luxury hotel is also being built inside the park. Currently,

there are only a few hotels in the closest city, Brumadinho. Many visitors prefer to stay in Belo Horizonte, Brazil’s sixth largest city, 37 miles (60 kilometers) away. There are also plans to build a theater, an amphitheater and a new pavilion. Also proposed: stand-alone lofts so visitors can enjoy a serene overnight stay, or even rent out a unit long-term. Antonio Grassi, the park’s executive director, says they also want to host debates and facilitate innovative art projects. But making changes “has been a very tough fight,” he said. “Our capacity to draw sponsorship of private companies has been affected during this crisis. Our challenge is to keep looking for alternatives.”(ap)

“When talking about figures for tourist arrivals, we need to consider that certain factor are lcoked in because the emphasis in tourism development is on industrial development, tourism development and domestic or international tourism development applies sustainable and competitive growth” said Prof. Dr. I Gde Pitana, Deputy to Foreign Marketing, Ministry of Tourism, in the ITO 2017 organized by Estepers at Ayodya Resort in Nusa Dua. The goal of of having 20 million visitors is often viewed with cynisim as there is fear that with such qauntaty, the quality of tourism will be reduced. According to Pitana, this will not be the case, because the 20 million figure is locked in with a number of two-fold foreign exchanges. Tourism is a complex sector that affects other sectors and is affected by many sectors as well. Tourism cannot stand alone and is very closely related to other sectors in the social economic web. Therefore, according to Pitana, there are five factors affecting the Indonesian tourism market namely; the country’s economic growth, political stability and Indonesia’s economy, outbound growth of market countries, natural disasters (unpredictable) and the

activities conducted by Indonesia’s competitors. He said that seeing the economic growth of other market countries, Indonesia can predict the number of visitors from these countries. Japan, for instance, whose economy is in slowdown, also has less people visiting Indonesia. “This can give an illustration of ??the global economy and how our market will be in 2017”, he added. The second factor is the political stability of our economy. Several provinces in Indonesia will hold regional leader elections in 2017. This will also affect the number of foreigners who visit Indonesia. However, Minister of Home Affairs and security authorities believe the upcoming elections will not cause any significant interference. The third factor is the outbound travellers from coutnries that represent a tourism market for Indonesia. Data shows that the number of Chinese citizens who will be travelleing overseas will continue to rise . In 2015, the number of Chinese citizens who traveled overseas reached 118 million, while in 2017 it will reach about 133 million. This is a market that Indonesia should seize, because, China’s economy will keeo growing. He said that he was not certain about

Indoneesai needs to look at what its competitors are doing because competition in tourism is at the international level. All countries are priorotosing the tourism sector. There are even some cointries that formely had banned tourists from entering but are now competing to draw visitors. Another factor is the massive development of the digital world. District govt must be innovative in managing Kintamani BANGLI — The number of tourists visiting Kintamani over the past year –particularly European and Japanese tourists has been sluggish. As consequence, a number of hotels and restaurants are facing the very real threat of bankrupcy. In anticipation of this possibility, the government of Bangli is looking for innovative ways of managing Kintamani so that it can once again

Chairman of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) Bangli, I Ketut Putranata said that local wisdom is one of the things that they are looking to promote. Most of the people who visit Kintamani are from Europe and Japan. However about a year and a half ago the numbers dropped by anout 60 percent so of course

many local businesses are feeling the effect of this. “Both foreign and domestic travelers are scarce. Usually the area of Penelokan area is very crowded”, he said. Several factors have contributed to the decline in visitors, including the extreme hike in the proce of admission compared to the less than optimal services provided. “In the past, Japanese guests came in group and paid IDR

30,000 per person, but when they arrived in Kintamani they were dissapointed with the poor environmental sanitation, making them reluctant to return”, said Putranata. Amidst the lack of visitors fomr Europe and Japan, there is a general increase in the number of people from India and China who are visitig Bali, however few of them have coem to Kintamani. The local government should give attention to this matter. “Indeed there are many tourists but Bangli seems to be left out. The district government needs to figure out how to attract people to Bangli”, he said. According to Putranata, natrual beauty is not the only thing that can be promoted, innovative breachthroughs are required to promote other aspects such as Kintamani’s local wisdom. The story of Kang Ching Wie has been put up in a number of locations as a way to have Chinese travellers become aware of their ties to the history of this area. “Currently promotion is

quite monotonous, we could be featuring our local wisdom and history and packaging this along with the natural beauty of the area. We need to have a selling point”, he said. The district government however cannot walk alone in encouraging pride in local tourism. Strategic marketing with tourism players and travel agencies needs to be intesified. The issues tht need to discussed include the lack of tourists attractions but also other things that can attract visitors. “Do not let travelers be like fried rice that is given cap cay. It is not cohesive” he said. Putranata also highlighted the fact that the district government seems to have nit made any effort to increase the number of tourist who visit Kintamani. A tangled view often blankets the black pearl of the district of Bangli. “Actually we are still waiting for action from the district government. But until now it has not been maximal” he concluded. SINGARAJA - Dolphin lovers do not feel complete without paying a visit to the dolphins that swim in the waters at Lovina Beach in Kalibukbuk village. This mammal that enjoys jumping out of the water between tourists boats, often hide and then suddenly emerge with a variety of free movements in the waters of Lovina. Both domestic and foreign travelers wake up before sunrise to catch a glimpse of the dolphins that tend to make an appearance between 5- 7:30AM. However recently the dolphins have been discouraged from emerging due to the noise of the engines of ever increasing numbers of boats. Sometimes there are as many as 20 dolphins watching boats in the water and some of them

have even taken to chasing down the dolphins. As a result, these mammals who have become famous for their familiarity with humans, have grown annoyed with the grating sound of the engines, some of which are quite large. “During peak season, there are many dolphin watching boats in the water. However we need to consider and agree upon a suitable way to

watch the dolphins. People who come to see the dolphins do so because they love this animal, but chasing down the dolphins makes these creatures uncomfortable and so they prefer to go back out to sea”, said Putu Budista, head of Lovina’s Catur Karya Bakti fishermen group, recently. Budista hopes that the dolphins can be allowed the freedom to as much comfort as possible to jump around in their favorite spot. Dolphin watching at sea needs to be done in such as way that boats do not impede the movements of the dolphins. Sometimes the captains of these vesels, are eager to make sure that their guests can see the

dolphins as soon as possible and take a picture so that they are satisfied and perhaps return again the next morning. Currently, there are ten buffer villages in the area of ??Lovina and each one has a fishermen group with an average of 50 members. “Boat engines should be turned off, so that the dolphins are nt disturbed and can make an appearance. What tends to be happening now is that as soon as a group of dolphins appear, dozens of boats rush to where they are. Boats should in fact not get too close to the dolphins and engines should not be running at high speed as this

bothers the dolphins. Relevant government agencies should educate the captains of the boats about the need to follow such protocol”, said Budista with hope. Head of the Buleleng Fisheries and Marine Resources, Ni Made Arnika, said that her agency will attempt to require dolphin watching boat captains to be certified and to provide them with understanding about the best way to go about dolphin watching at sea. “In 2017, we are going to provide professional training for the captains of dolphin watching boats so that once they understand they can be certified”, she said. This site, an old lava flow from Mount Agung, is at the opposite end of the bay from the Wreck (about 15min walk along the stony beach). The dive starts off on a steep sand slope with nudibranches, flounders, goby/shrimp sets. At 12m are sponges with many varieties of shrimp, Leaf Scorpionfish abound and there are many crinoids, often with attendant Ghost Pipefish. Continuing round to the R, the slope develops into a reef with very impressive topography, becoming a vertical wall from 15M and descending to below 60m. Visibility – best in the morning – is usually 15-20M (due to the amount of

plankton in the water) and, because of the location, it is rare that there is a current, even a mild one. The wall has profuse sponges, corals, black coral bushes, gorgonian fans – at 30M there’s one that reaches 2M in width that we visit for the Deep Dive on Advanced Courses. The wall, the lava spur, then reverts to being a steep slope. The fish life is similar to that found on the wreck but being a much larger area, is less dense. However, more often than on the Wreck, you will see white tip reef shark, large Napoleon Wrasse, big Bumphead Parrotfish, some big Filefish (including Scrawled), and

large Moray Eel. Late afternoon is the time to see the wide variety of Lionfish that live here, I’m not the person to ask why we see so many of them! There have been sightings of Whale Shark in as little as 9M of water, and much deeper, Hammerhead Shark. The back reef at the top of the Wall, averaging 5M, contains an excellent ‘aquarium section’, including cuttlefish, octopus, boxer crabs and many other unexpected treasures, enabling you to finish your dive at around 5m for pretty much as long as you want to. This is, of course, also very popular with snorkellers. (IBP)

The rally renewed what has become a weekly back-and-forth between police and protest organizers, whose crowd estimates have differed widely. Police said about 270,000 people turned out on Saturday, making it the largest antiPark rally yet. Organizers estimated the crowd at 1.5 million. There are many challenges for counting the number of protesters. The rallies stretch from midday to late night — some people stay for several hours, others just several minutes. The demonstrators not only gather in open space, but also small alleys and between buildings. Some of them are constantly moving. A look at how police and protest organizers size the crowds at protests, and also how South Korean scientists and a technology company are exploring new ways to more accurately measure the number of protesters:

understates the actual number of demonstrators because it fails to track people moving in and out of the area during the duration of the protest, and is ill-equipped to measure protesters in non-open space, such as sidewalks and alleys between buildings. ORGANIZERS: TRACKING EVERYONE WHO CAME AND WENT

Han Seon-beom, one of the protest organizers, admits outright that their measurements aren’t scientific, but still argues they are more reliable than police numbers. Organizers seek to track the entire flow of people from the protest’s start to its finish. They collect estimates given by counters deployed at different locations to size up the crowds in each area and update the numbers throughout the duration of the protest.

They try to account for the people on the sidewalks, spaces between buildings and also those moving in and out of nearby subway stations and restaurants, Han said. The numbers of participants reported by organized groups, such as labor unions, are also put into account. “What you try to do is to count the first 1,000, like the first 20 rows of 50 people, and that gives you an idea of how many people you are seeing,” Han said.

COMPANY: COUNTING NUMBER OF SIGNALS FROM SMARTPHONES

One South Korean retail analytics company measured the number of protesters by counting the number of smartphone signals. Zoyi Corp. deployed about 60 people, each carrying a backpack with the company’s Wi-Fi signal-detecting sensor, to the rally on Nov. 19. They collected Wi-Fi and Bluetooth signals from smartphones for about seven hours from 2 p.m. at 53 spots and found about 369,372 smartphones that had their wireless signals on during the rally. The company presumed that about half of smartphone users usually leave their Wi-Fi feature on and the other

half switch it off, based on a separate survey on smartphone usage. It also assumed that about 20 percent of the smartphone signals were repetition from the same device. Based on this, Zoyi concluded that about 738,700 people joined the rally. “The limitation of our method is that it can measure only those who kept their phones’ Wi-Fi signals on,” said An Nahyun, the company’s chief operating officer.

SCIENTISTS LOOK AT PARTICLE PHYSICS AND MORE

Some scientists strived to improve accuracy by drawing methods from their own field. In general, they conclude that the protests must be larger than the police estimates. Park Inkyu, a particle physicist, counted the number of people by applying a method that scientists use to measure particles in highenergy physics, writing a code that counted the number of candle lights based on pictures from the rally. Based on his own observation at the past rallies, Park assumed that at least half of the demonstrators did not bring a candle. He added the number of candles in the photo

to the possible number of people without a candle and drew a conclusion that about four people were occupying 1 square meter (11 square feet) at the rally. That means that the number of people occupying avenues, streets and alleys near the presidential office could range from 500,000 to 700,000 when the areas are packed, he said. The limitation of Park’s estimate is that it cannot count the candles hidden behind other people or objects. Another scientist suggested a way of measuring the crowds’ movement. Assuming that about 10 percent of the area at the rally is used as passageways for people who are moving, and also assuming that each person moves every 0.3 second, the number of people who came and left the Nov. 12 protest would have been three times larger than the police estimate, according to Won Byung Mook, a science and engineering professor at Sungkyunkwan University. Won said scientists need more data to make their estimates more precise. “There are many limitations in this method because it is based on assumption, not on vetted data,” he said. (ap)

POLICE: MEASURING THE CROWD AT ITS PEAK

While the protest in Seoul on Nov. 12 might have been one of the largest since South Korea freed itself from dictatorship three decades ago, it’s unclear how big it actually was. Police saw the crowd at 260,000, while organizers say 1 million turned out. For the police, the aim is to measure the maximum crowd occupying a certain space at any given time so that they could determine the size of police personnel and resources to deploy, according to an official from the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, who didn’t want to be named, citing office rules. Police presume that, when sitting, six people would fill a space of 3.3 square meters (36 square feet), or 1 “pyeong,” the aerial unit commonly used in South Korea. The same area would hold nine or 10 people when standing, police said. Based on this, police consider the 32,100-square-meter (345,525square-foot) boulevard in front of the Gwanghwamun palace gate, which has been the center of the protests, as accommodating close to 600,000 people when fully packed. UK firms show no Brexit vote hit in Q3 as investment grows

LONDON - British companies brushed off the uncertainty over Brexit in the three months after June’s referendum and increased their investment, helping to drive solid growth in the economy, official data showed on Friday. Business investment expanded at a quarterly rate of 0.9 percent in the three months to September, the Office for National Statistics said, beating expectations for a 0.6 percent rise in a Reuters poll of economists. Britain’s economy overall grew by 0.5 percent in the third quarter, the ONS said, helped by a rebound in exports and robust household spending, the ONS said. A separate survey showed retail sales growing at the fastest pace in more than a year this month and suggested strong consumer spending will continue to drive the economy in the fourth quarter. Britain’s economy has performed much better than most economists had expected in the immediate aftermath of June’s vote to leave the European Union. But a much bigger test awaits next year. Rising inflation caused by the pound’s post-referendum plunge looks set to squeeze household spending and economists said they still expected business investment to slow. “So far, so good, then,” HSBC economist Elizabeth Martins said. “But we find it hard to believe that the economy can sustain this pace of expansion, given the indications from business surveys and growing price pressures.” Britain’s business investment statistics are prone to

big revisions and the ONS said most of the investment decisions captured in Friday’s data probably took place before the Brexit referendum. While tech giants Facebook and Google and carmaker Nissan have committed to investing in Britain since the vote, some business surveys suggest the scores of smaller firms have curbed plans for capital spending recently. In a move aimed at offsetting the likely slowing of private investment in the next couple of years, finance minister Philip Hammond this week announced he will borrow 23 billion pounds ($29 billion) to invest more in housing, transport and digital infrastructure over the next five years. The strong retail sales figures from the Confederation of British Industry on Friday chimed with the official data showing households increased their spending by 0.7 percent in the third quarter, slowing slightly but still helping to drive the economy in the face of uncertainty around Brexit.

But the outlook for household spending looks doubtful. The Institute for Fiscal Studies think tank warned of “dreadful” wage growth on Thursday with wages set to be lower in inflation-adjusted terms in 2021 than they were in 2008. Net trade added 0.7 percentage points to economic growth in the third quarter, the biggest positive contribution since early 2014 and helped by strong growth in exports after the pound’s post-referendum plunge. “So the weak pound may already be delivering some upsides,” said Martin Beck, senior economic adviser to the EY ITEM Club consultancy. “But the downsides of that weakness in pushing up inflation means that GDP growth in the near-term may struggle to match Q3’s performance.” The economy overall expanded 2.3 percent versus the same period a year earlier, unchanged from a preliminary estimate. Britain’s independent budget forecaster said on Wednesday that the economy looks set to slow sharply next year, expanding by around 1.4 percent, down from about 2.1 percent this year. BRUSSELS - From brown ales to golden pilsners to the strong trappist brews produced in monasteries, Belgian beer is enjoyed around the world. Now, Belgium is asking the United Nations’ heritage body to add its beer-making and drinking culture to a list of traditions worth protecting, saying that brewing fosters a unified identity in a country with three official languages. The country is home to nearly 200 breweries making 1,500 different beers, according to the trade association Belgian Brewers, which prepared Belgium’s application. National dishes also include beer and the country has some 30 brewing museums. Submitted by Belgium’s German-speaking region to UNESCO, the application says beer brewing improves the well-being of Belgian people by stimulating the economy, promoting local products and strengthening social ties. The history and broad variety of brews available make Belgium’s beer industry stand out from other brewing traditions around the world, the submission says. UNESCO’s ‘intangible heritage’ committee meets next week in Addis Ababa and will determine whether Belgian beer culture and 36 other practices such as Indian yoga and Czech and Slovak puppetry should enter its list. It would join the likes of Spain’s Flamenco, China’s dragon boat festival and last year’s entrants from Arabic coffee to bagpipe culture in Slovakia. Indonesian govt offers condolences over Fidel Castro`s death

JAKARTA - The Indonesian government and people have offered condolences to the people and Government of Cuba in the wake of the death of former Cuban leader Fidel Castro on Saturday, November 26. “May he rest in peace,” the ministry of foreign affairs spokesperson Arrmanatha Nasir said here on Sunday. The Foreign Affairs Ministry released a statement on Sunday after Cuba officially announced that Fidel Castro had died at age 90. Castro has been in poor health since an intestinal ailment nearly killed him in 2006. Nasir said Indonesia grieved over the loss of Castro and prayed that his family, government, and people of Cuba would be given strength on the passing of Castro. Fidel Castro took power in a 1959 revolution and ruled Cuba for 49 years with a mix of charisma and iron will, creating a one-party

state and becoming a central figure in the Cold War. He was demonized by the United States and its allies but admired by many leftists around the world, especially socialist revolutionaries in Latin America and Africa. Indonesia and Cuba established the diplomatic relations in 1962 and Indonesia opened its Embassy in Havana in 1963. Since then, Indonesia and Cuba have enjoyed good relations both in bilateral and multilateral cooperation, particularly in South-South cooperation. Indonesia also welcomed the re-establishment of the ties between Cuba and the US on July 20, 2015. Israel arrests 13 on suspicion of arson over mass wildfires

JERUSALEM - Israeli police arrested 13 people on Friday on suspicion of arson, authorities said, after massive wildfires tore through central and northern Israel, a conflagration that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu branded as “terrorism”. Firefighters kept battling the flames in wooded hills around Jerusalem and in northern areas on Friday, with support from Palestinian firemen and emergency teams from Greece, Cyprus, Croatia, Italy, Russia and Turkey. Netanyahu said he had also accepted offers of help from Egypt and Jordan. Unseasonably dry weather and easterly winds helped kindle the fires, which erupted on Tuesday and now stretch across half the country. Arson appeared to be behind some of the blazes, Netanyahu said. “A price will be paid for this arson-terrorism,” he told reporters on Friday. He said the arson was carried out by “elements with great hostility toward Israel.” “We cannot tell yet if this is organised, but we can see a number of cells operating,” Netanyahu said. Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said a dozen people had been detained either while attempting to set fires or fleeing the area, but he provided no further details. Internal Security Minister Gilad Erdan told reporters 13 people were arrested. Erdan said those arrested were “minorities”, an allusion to either Arab Israeli citizens or Palestinians. “The highest likelihood is that the motive is nationalistic,” Erdan told Army Radio. Police, however, stopped short of declaring any motive.

The fires are the biggest in the country since 2010, when 44 people were killed in a killed in a massive blaze in the north. Investigators concluded that fire was caused by negligence. Opposition wins seats in Kuwait vote, as does just 1 woman

KUWAIT CITY — Opposition members are set to return to Kuwait’s parliament after a more than three-year absence, though only one woman secured a place in the legislature, elections results released Sunday showed. Kuwaitis voted Saturday for representatives in the oil-rich country’s 50-member parliament, the most empowered among the Gulf Arab states. The election was held against the backdrop of lingering security concerns following a deadly suicide bombing last year, as well as anxiety over the depth of cutbacks to generous state-funded perks driven by a slump in oil revenues. The gains by the opposition are unlikely to seriously upend the tiny Western-allied country’s political order. Parliament still appears to be controlled by pro-government lawmakers, who have the authority to question government ministers. Power in the country ultimately remains with the hereditary emir. Six prominent opposition figures who have taken part in street protests secured seats in Saturday’s vote. So did 13 political newcomers, including four backed by different Kuwaiti youth liberal groups and nine representing tribal groupings. Political parties are illegal in Kuwait, meaning opposition blocs tend to be fluid and form alliances around particular issues. The water is collected from the lake itself, directly in front of the temple. Visitors have to wear a sash and not go near. Bathing is forbidden. The lake is the ultimate source of water for the rivers and springs that irrigate central Bali. It is therefore of the utmost importance. The temple priests say that the lake is fed by springs located at each of the wind directions. Each of the springs is the origin of water for that particular region of central Bali. So, farmers from North Bali collect their holy water from the northern spring of the lake and so on. Ulun Danu Temple lies by the western banks of Lake Bratan in the Bedugul Highlands at a level of 1239m, is one of the most picturesque and most photographed temples in Bali. Ulun Danu is inside the caldera of the now extinct volcano Gunung Catur. It is one of the main sources of irrigation in the Balinese highlands, and so the temple is dedicated to Dewi Danu, the lake goddess.

Ulun Danu temple can be traced back to the rise of the Mengwi kingdom. The name of Ulun Danu Beratan Temple is taken from the lake where the temple is built at Beratan Lake. The name of Beratan Lake is inseparable with the Beratan Mount as Deity and Goddess as fertility source, prosperity to keep the prosperity in life and society life. In Papyrus Chronicle of the Mengwi is elaborated by the history of Ulun Danu Beratan Temple founding together with existence of the Mengwi Empire. Therefore its status is pertained with the secondhand of Temple Empire what is usually pertained as Dang Kahyangan. It is the same to the description in papyrus of Usana Bali and Padma Bhuwana, hence Puncak Mangu Temple where the Panyawangan (representative place to worship) is the Ulun Danu Beratan Temple. So it is called by entire Balinese residents as Kahyangan Jagat (The Biggest Group of Hindu Temple in Bali.

MILAN - Gianluca Lapadula scored his first Serie A brace to help AC Milan thump Empoli 4-1 away on Saturday while Chievo were left fuming after their 2-1 defeat at Torino. The win moved second-placed Milan, who are enjoying a revival this season under coach Vincenzo Montella, within four points of leaders Juventus who face an awkward trip to Genoa on Sunday. Lapadula, signed in the close season after scoring 30 goals to help win Pescara promotion from Serie B last season, put the visitors ahead after 15 minutes. The 26year-old, who has spent his entire career in the lower divisions of the Italian league apart from a season with Gorica in Slovenia, turned in Suso’s cross with a first-time shot after Empoli lost possession.

Empoli quickly equalised when Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma flapped at Massimo Maccarone’s cross and the unmarked Riccardo Saponara blasted the ball in, ending a five-match scoreless run in home games for the Blues.
