The 29-year-old -- probably best known for the Hollywood blockbuster “Pirates of the Caribbean” films -- will take on the lead role in the tale of love, lust, betrayal and guilt, which will officially open on October 29, 2015. Knightley will play Therese, who has made peace with her loveless marriage to a weak man when she embarks on a passionate affair that ends in tragedy. The adaptation -- based on the 19th century novel -- is by Helen Edmundson, and the production will be directed by Evan Cabnet. Knightley first rose to prominence in Britain with the smash-hit film “Bend It Like Beckham.” She was nominated for a best actress Oscar in 2006 for her portrayal of Elizabeth in “Pride and Prejudice.” She made her West End debut in London with Moliere’s “The Misanthrope” in 2009.

Christian Bale to play Apple’s Steve Jobs Agence France-Presse

LOS ANGELES - Oscar-winner Christian Bale -- best known for his star turn as Batman in the blockbuster “Dark Knight” films -- will play Apple co-founder Steve Jobs in an upcoming biopic. “We needed the best actor on the board in a certain age range and that’s Chris Bale,” the film’s screenwriter Aaron Sorkin said, in an interview with Bloomberg Television posted online Thursday. Sorkin, who won an Academy Award for his screenplay for “The Social Network” about Facebook and its co-founder Mark Zuckerberg, said giving the lead role to Bale was an easy call. “He didn’t have to audition,” said Sorkin, although the writer said “there was

a meeting” before the British-born actor was given the part. “He has more words to say in this movie than most people have in three movies combined,” said Sorkin, who is writing the script for Sony Pictures based on the 2011 biography “Steve Jobs,” by Walter Isaacson. “There isn’t a scene or a frame that he’s not in. So it’s an extremely difficult part and he is going to crush it,” Sorkin said. The Apple inventor’s storied life already has been rendered on the big screen in last year’s drama “Jobs” starring Ashton Kutcher, which received lukewarm reviews. Bale received a best supporting actor Oscar in 2011 for his role in the “The Fighter,” in which he plays the older brother of a washed-up boxer struggling to revive his career. The actor had a breakout performance as the lead actor in the 2000 movie “American Psycho,” and also earned a lead actor Oscar nomination for his turn in last year’s “American Hustle.”

DENPASAR - Three of the four lakes in Bali namely the Lake Batur, Lake Beratan and Lake Buyan are polluted. Meanwhile, another lake, namely the Lake Tamblingan, also begins to get polluted like the three other lakes. The most severe pollution happens to Lake Batur due to the use of fertilizer, pesticides, domestic waste and bathroom waste. “Since 2009, the Lake Batur has become a national priority because it has already been quite high polluted lake. Although in 2013 showed a decline in pollution or there has been a recovery, but condition of the lake is still relatively polluted,” said the Head of Con-

servation and Natural Resources, the Bali Environment Agency, Ida Bagus Badraka. Badraka added, in addition to pesticides, domestic waste as well as toilet waste, the pollution in the Lake Batur was also caused by livestock farming and fisheries in the form of

floating net cages. As a result, the pollution could not be maximally reduced. So far, his party had attempted a communal septic tank and made biogas from livestock manure so that the waste was not directly discharged into the lake. “Pollution in Lake Batur is indeed the most severe because it is more complex, let alone a floating net cage whose growth is remarkable. This causes higher pollution due to the existence of feed materials and others that can fertilize the lake water,” he explained. Meanwhile, added Badraka, the Lake Beratan and Lake Buyan were

polluted due to some agricultural activities at the surrounding areas using pesticides and herbicides. In Lake Beratan, the pollution was also coupled by tourism activity related to the use of boats consuming gasoline or diesel fuel. “In the upcoming year 2015, we will also propose the Lake Beratan and Lake Buyan to central government to be included in the national priorities in two stages, as in the case of Lake Batur of the first stage. Lake Beratan will be worked on first and then followed by Lake Buyan. Where possible, both will be worked on simultaneously,” he explained.

Badraka hoped that all elements of society and related offices in the province and the county to work together in tackling pollution of the lakes. Moreover, there was only one lake, namely Lake Tamblingan, whose condition was relatively better than the other three lakes. Badraka added that Lake Tamblingan actually started to lead to pollution. “Anyway Tamblingan has started to get polluted. If left unchecked, the pollution of the lake will affect the water supply, especially to the surrounding community,” he concluded. (kmb32)
