Brigitte Bardot to get a statue in Saint-Tropez

NICE - French screen goddess Brigitte Bardot will be be honoured Thursday in the Riviera resort of St Tropez, where a 2.5-metre (eight-foot) statue of the actress will be unveiled on her 83rd birthday. Bardot became synonymous with the town after she helped put it on the map in her breakthrough role as a semi-naked seductress in the 1956 film “And God Created Woman”. The film was shot in St Tropez when it was still a bohemian fishing village. Bardot moved there in 1958, with international jet-setters in hot pursuit. She gave up her film career in 1973 and withdrew to her secluded home on the outskirts of the town to devote herself to promoting animal rights. The bronze statue commissioned by St Tropez is based on an Italian illustrator’s drawings of a curvaceous young Bardot -- the muse of such filmmakers as Roger Vadim (her first husband), Jean-Luc Godard and Louis Malle. The reclusive Bardot is not expected to attend the unveiling ceremony. Indonesia ready to divert tourists as Bali volcano rumbles

KARANGASEM - Indonesian authorities are on standby to divert flights destined for the holiday island of Bali as increasingly frequent tremors from a rumbling volcano stoke fears an eruption could be imminent. Mount Agung, 75 kilometres (47 miles) from the tourist hub of Kuta, has been shaking since August, threatening to erupt for the first time in more than 50 years and forcing more than 80,000 people to flee their homes. Bali attracts millions of foreign visitors every year to its palmfringed beaches and an eruption would be a blow to its tourismdependent economy. The airport in Bali’s capital Denpasar has not been affected, but several countries including Australia and Singapore have is-

sued advisories warning travellers to exercise caution. In the case of an eruption, Indonesia plans to divert flights headed for Bali to ten other airports, including on nearby Lombok and the capital Jakarta. “The planes will be diverted to their nearest location or where it originally took off from,” transport minister Budi Karya Sumadi said. Jokowi asks residents to follow officers’ instructions

The inspection was also conducted to refugees housed in tents. He conveyed that until now there is no certainty when Mount Agung will erupt. It cannot be predicted accurately and how much the intensity is. “In handling volcanic eruption, there is no certainty when it erupts, whether it erupts or not,” he said. Nevertheless, he said that central, provincial and district government will do their best to minimize the loss of society, including the economic sector.

In addition, he emphasized that to avoid undesirable things all the residents were asked to comply with all instructions issued by the government. “Whether they are officers, governor, regent or BNPB,” said the president familiarly addressed as Jokowi while rushing to leave the location. A refugee from Sebudi village, Selat, Karangasem, Ketut Indrasari, was very pleased with the president’s presence. It is considered as a form of concern. “Moreover, it is the first time for me to meet him, I am very happy,” he said. Not much different comment was expressed by Nyoman Sudarma, a refugee from Selat Duda. “Since the beginning, I have an ideal to meet the president and ultimately I can meet him in person,” he said. Director General of Social Protection and Social Security, the Ministry of Social Affairs, Harry Hikmat, explained that the aids provided by the president have been handed over to refugees spreading over a number of districts worth IDR 7.2 billion. They include mattresses, masks, rice and children needs. “The amount of this aid is the effort of the government in providing protection for refugees related to the eruption of Mount Agung in Bali. The aids are distributed to refugee pockets. Aside from establishing public kitchen, it is also accompanied with the preparation of Psychosocial Support Services Team (LDP),” he said. Apart from logistics, the ministry of social affairs has also prepared 42 vehicles for disaster preparedness, where ten of which are public kitchen vans placed in several evacuation locations run by the disaster volunteer youths. SINGARAJA — About 500 refugees from Ban village, Kubu, Karangasem, occupying Tejakula village hall, Tejakula, enthusiastically watched the performance of Joged Bungbung. This traditional entertainment is deliberately staged by Teja Mekar troupe of Tejakula village to participate in restoring the psychological condition of the refugees. The atmosphere looked different at the evacuation post at Tejakula village hall. The sound of laughter of the refugees broke out as Joged Bungbung dancers sought out the audience to join the dance (ngibing—E). In turn, the refugees ranging from children to adults joined the dance. In addition, the refugees mingled with Tejakula villagers to watch the staging of the Joged Bungbung. Chief of Teja Mekar rindik art troupe, Wayan Swasta, said the refugee condition after being evacuated following the determination of warning status of Gunung Agung influenced their mental condition. If not addressed, this situation is feared to trigger a more serious problem. To that end, his troupe participated in provide entertainment for the refugees by staging Joged Bungbung in refugee camps. With this entertainment, he has confidence that mental burden of

refugees will be relieved and can think quietly even though their area of origin has been threatened to be affected if Mount Agung erupts. “We participate in entertaining the refugees because we know their state of mind is not calm after being evacuated and now they are living in refugee camps. Hopefully, this entertainment can slightly calm down the mind of refugees,” he said. In the meantime, one of the refugees, Nyoman Sudiarta, claimed to be happy after watching the art performance of Joged Bungbung. He was also grateful for the attention of villagers that helped him in the refugee camp. Besides, Sudiarta admitted to resign to the fate if Mount Agung will experience eruption. He has a plan if the eruption impact will eliminate all the businesses at his home village of Ban, he will try his fortune to take odd jobs at Tejakula village and surrounding areas. “We are quite happy with the entertainment like this, if staying at home my feeling is not good. Everyone has helped us during the evacuation and we have been given the attention ranging from food to entertainment. U.S. picks companies to help make rules for advanced personal health monitors Too little sleep tied

The firms will take part in a program that could make it faster for digital health devices to come to market by requiring less information to be sent to regulators ahead of time, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said. Current devices, like the Apple Watch or Fitbit Blaze, measure things like motion and heart rate. But to take further measurements like blood oxygen or glucose, future devices might full under regulatory review. That review can take months or years, which is far slower than the pace of software updates from most technology firms. Because of the potential for lengthy reviews, consumer technology companies have been reluctant to wade directly into territory regulated by the FDA. Apple, for example, has tended to partner with existing health researchers and companies DexCom Inc, a conventional medical device firm, for uses of their products that involve regulatory oversight.

But under President Donald Trump, the FDA has been moving to relax some of its requirements. The FDA in July created a pilot program that would precertify certain companies so that they have to submit less information before marketing a product. The initial participants in the pilot program also included Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, Alphabet Inc’s Verily biotech unit, Johnson & Johnson and Swiss biotech firm Roche AG, among others. The FDA said in a statement it was also considering whether companies in the pilot program “may not have to submit a product for premarket review in some cases.” “Our method for regulating digital health products must recognize the unique and iterative characteristics of these products,” FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said in the statement. One major difference in the pilot program from existing regulations is that it will evaluate companies based on how well their software-design systems work, rather than looking at each product and its accompanying software individually. “We are hopeful this will allow us to accelerate FDA regulated features and software development, bringing new capabilities that could positively impact health outcomes to market more quickly,” Fitbit CEO James Park said in a statement. to weight gain in kids SYDNEY - Children who don’t get enough sleep may be more likely to become overweight or obese than kids who typically get enough rest, a Danish study suggests. The researchers focused on 368 normal weight children between 2 and 6 years old who were at risk for becoming overweight because they were born at a high birth weight, had heavy parents or came from a lowincome family. At the start of the study, parents recorded sleep diaries for their children over 7 days, noting how much total rest kids got and whether the children took naps, slept through the night, had difficulty falling asleep or waking up, or suffered from other sleep issues. Parents also completed food diaries. The children who got the least amount of nighttime sleep on average were more likely to become overweight during the following 1.3 years, the study found. Kids who became overweight were also more likely to consume a lot of sugary foods and drinks. “Our study showed that children with the highest sleep variability consumed higher amounts of added sugars and sugary beverages but lower amounts of fruits and vegetables compared with children with lower sleep variability,” said lead study author Anna Rangan of the University of Sydney. “This suggests that children who have less variable sleep duration, or better sleep routines, have better dietary quality than those who may have less stringent sleep routines,” Rangan said by email. While plenty of previous research has linked inadequate sleep to obesity in both children and adults, less is known about toddlers and young children with a high risk of obesity because of their own birth weight or parents’ weight and income, researchers note in the International Journal of Obesity. At age 2, kids should get 11 to 14 hours of sleep in a 24-hour period, including naps, according to guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics. Children who slept more than 10.7 hours on average had significantly less weight gain than kids who slept less than 10.4 hours, the study found. Kids who slept less were more likely to have trouble falling asleep and to go to their parents’ bed at night - than children who got more rest, the study also found. One limitation of the study is that researchers relied on parents to accurately recall and report on children’s sleep routines, the authors note. It’s also possible that some unmeasured or poorly measured factors like socioeconomic status, family characteristics or physical activity might influence the connection between sleep and obesity. Even so, the findings add to previous research linking inadequate sleep to increased caloric consumption and poor food choices, said James Gangwisch, a psychiatry researcher at Columbia University in New York who wasn’t involved in the study. “Eating a poor diet, inadequate physical activity and being overweight can also contribute toward disturbed sleep,” Gangwisch said by email. Parents can help children get more sleep by enforcing a regular sleep schedule even on weekends and holidays, creating a calming bedtime routine, and removing electronics from the bedroom, said Stacey Simon, a pediatric sleep psychologist at Children’s Hospital Colorado and the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora. “Teaching kids that sleep is a priority – and modeling this behavior – by blocking out enough time to get the right amount of sleep is important, especially as children get older and become more independent,” Simon, who wasn’t involved in the study, said by email. “In addition to weight, we know that insufficient sleep has a negative impact on children’s behavior, mood, and cognition,” Simon added. “So getting the right amount of sleep is extremely important.” (rtr)

AMLAPURA — The earthquakes around Gunung Agung continue to show increasing intensity. This further reinforces the assumption that Mount Agung will experience an eruption, sooner or later. These earthquakes indicate that fluid gas is continuing to rise from the pockets of Mount Agung’s magma, about five kilometers from the surface of the crater. According to all the indication that have been analysed by the geological agency, it would appear that an eruption is on its way. Head of the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation, Kasbani, said on Saturday (Sep. 23) that along with the increasing number and intensity of earthquakes, fluid gases are also rising to the surface of Gunugn Agung’s crater with increasing frequency. However, based studies of Mount Agung’s characteristics, magma inside the crater continually releases fluid gaz in unpredictable ways. “Now, it indeed this is increases. However sometimes it decreases, it is hard to predict. No one can guess when this magma will stop emitting fluid gas or when an eruptio may occur”, said Kasbani after meeting with the BNPB and related ranks of the central government following the determination of the alert level for the volcanic activity of Mount Agung that took place at Wantilan of the government of Karangasem on Saturday (Sep. 23). In principle, Kasbani asserted that alert level should be taken seriously and efforts should be made to evacuate the area at a radius of 9 km from the surface of Mount Agung’s crater. Given the increasing intensity of Mount Agung’s earthquakes, his agency can only guess about the occurence of other volcanic activity. Kasbani has carefully studied the character of Mount Agung in order ot better understand the data. The largest mountain in Bali has four recorded eruptions, with the longest interval having occurred between the last two eruptions marking an interval

of 120 years. The eruptions of Mount Agung are noted as being ten times larger than the eruptions of Mount Merapi. The range of the hot clouds from Mount Agung’s eruption is estimated to reach 14 km northwards and 12 km southwards. When setting the alert level on Friday night (Sep. 22), Kasbani said that they had recorded the highest number of indicators since the increase in volcanic activity in August. Mount Agung has a different character than most volcanoes, so its eruptions cannot be predicted”, he said. Head of the BNPB, Willem Rampangilei, asserted that with the more and more indicators, all areas within a radius of 9 km from the surface of Mount Agung’s crater must be immediately evacuated, including the areas that have been defined as ”area of ??expansion” that spread in several directions. All areas within this radius must be cleared of humans within 24 hours of the status upgrading to alert level. He also asked the Mount Agung Disaster Management Task Force to immediately distribute masks to residents. The BNPB itself has provided as many as 15,000 masks according to protocol regarding emergency alerts. Emergency alerts have been issued by the BNPB since September 18 and stand for the next 14 days. However, given the current situation this emergency alert will be in effect for one month. Masks are needed to avoid the hazards of volcanic ash. Although volcanic ash looks like regular ash from a fire, when examined under a microscope volcanic ash looks like glass flakes and is seriously hazardous to health when inhaled. Lungs can become damaged a short time after inhaling volcanic dust. “We are preparing to face the worst situations for the sake of obtaining the best results. We remain on emergency alert not in emergency response. We will move into emergency response after the eruption”, he said. (kmb31)

Education agency of Gianyar assures that displaced student continue to receive education

GIANYAR — After the status of Mount Agung increased to alert level, students from the district of Karangasem who have taken refuge elsewhere have been assured to continue receiving an education in the district of Gianyar. The Gianyar education agency has been collecting data on these young students.

As a first step, the Gianyar education agency has collected data about refugees who have come to Puakan Hamlet, Taro, Tegallalang. O fthe 78 displaced people there, 20 are school aged students: 8 elementary students, 6 junior high students and 6 high school students. “So far, we from the Gianyar education agency have taken the first step of visiting Puakan hamlet” said the Head of the Gianyar Education Agency, Made Suradnya, accompanied by his Secretary, Wayan Sadra, on Saturday (Sep. 23). Suradnya explained that the 8 elementary school students will be accommodated at SDN 5 Taro elementary school and the 6 junior high school students at SMPN 4 Tegallalang, while the 6 high school students will be accomodated at SMAN 1 Tegallalang high school. “The students will be provided with uniforms so that the students feel at home”, ??added Secretary Wayan Sadra. On Saturday afternoon, the Gianyar education agency handed out school supplies and sports equipement to the youngster who had fled to Puakan hamlet. They also lent the refugee camp a television. “ We gave then equipment to play football so that they can let off steam and not undego to much stress as a result of their displacement” he explained. After coordinating with the regional disaster mitiga-

tion agency (BPBD) of Gianyar, the education agency of Gianyar arranged for the students to be transported to and from school as well. “For the elementary students staying next to the refugee camp, it is not a problem, while the junior high school students will be transferred by the BPBD early in the morning, and so will the high school students,” he said. He emphasized that this instruction also applies for all refugees, either at Taro village or other regions. Every sub-district education agency has been ordered to register all the fleeing students, so that they can be directed to attend the education in the nearest school. “According to the orders of the leadership, there is no reason for the school to reject the students, in fact they have been given the go ahead to receive such students without the need for the usual documents and the like as a humanitarrian measure. Later the children will also be provided with clothing” he said. In addition, all schools in Gianyar district have been ordered to collect voluntary donations. “This is not a levy, but only a charity box. Once collected the funds will handed over to the different posts” he said. Teachers have also been encouraged to conduct academic evaluations on the new incomeing students so as to ba able to keep track of their eanring process. “ If the students are behind they should be brought up to speed. These children need to be given special attention” he said. Previously, Deputy Regent of Gianyar, Made Mahayastra, already ensured the education for students in refugee camps will continue by joining classes at nearby schools. “We hope the education agency can record the number of students here. They must be provided with good conditions for learning”, said Deputy Regent of Gianyar who is also Chairman of the PDI-P Gianyar, Agus Mahayastra. (kmb35)

Not all areas in radius of 12 km should be emptied

BANGLI — Not all areas extending 12 kilometer from Mount Agung should be emptied during the warning status of Mount Agung. In Bangli, for example, although some areas belong to this radius, they are not necessarily vacated this time. This happens because the potential impact of Mount Agung eruption in the area is not estimated to be too severe. This was revealed by Subdivision Head of Mitigation of East Land Movement of PVMPG, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Agus Solihin, accompanied by Regent of Bangli, I Made Gianyar, on Tuesday (Sep. 26). Agus Solihin said his division has issued a letter of recommendation related to the increasing activity of Mount Agung from watch to warning status. In the recommendation, the area within the radius of 9 and 12 km should be emptied during the warning status. Nevertheless, a number of areas within the radius of 12 km should not be emptied like some villages in

Bangli district. He said the emptying does not need to be done currently because the impact resulted in when the eruption occurs is only in the form of ash rain. He explained the restricted area for all human activities lies in a radius of 9 km and the expansion of the sector as far as 12 km to the north-northeast and southsouthwest-southeast. “Regarding the appeal to vacate five villages in Bangli, it may happen due to miscommunication and misinformation. So, not all areas located in the radius of 12 km should be emptied today because it stays relatively safe,” he said. Related to the statement, Regent

Games like a boy scout is able to make children momentarily forget the disaster having forced them to be in evacuation. In addition to entertainment, children are also taught to sing national songs. This is also a form of implementation of children’s rights, namely the right to live, grow, get protection and participate. “We want children in the evacuation site not to be in dangerous situation,” she said. The children are entertained after school hours, so as not to interfere with their learning activities. If not entertained, children will continue to dissolve in dangerous situations inside the refugee camps. This initiative is not only done at Ulakan Square. Sunarti added that similar agenda is also held in other refugee camps in Karangasem, Buleleng and Klungkung. They have the same purpose namely to restore psychological condition of children in the refugee camps. Ministry of social affairs as the coordinator of the protection cluster must be able to safeguard the basic rights of the children. The ministry has come to the evacuation site since the announcement of disaster emergency of watch status. The ministry is not alone, but there are many helpful volunteers, such as Sakti Peksos, lecturers of STKS Bandung, Save the Children as well as many other volunteers. Many more volunteers want to come down to help with the ministry of social affairs. This kind of effort may look simple, but it is very beneficial to children in the refugee location. Thai junta chief ‘knows’ but won’t reveal fugitive PM’s location

BANGKOK - Thailand’s junta chief said Tuesday he knows where fugitive ex-premier Yingluck Shinawatra has fled to, but will not reveal her location until after a court delivers its verdict in her negligence trial this week.

The comments were the first admission from the military regime that it had located the runaway premier, who hasn’t been seen or heard from since she slipped out of the kingdom one month ago. Yingluck, whose government was toppled in a 2014 coup, pulled her vanishing act shortly before a Supreme Court verdict scheduled for August 25. She faces up to a decade in jail and a lifetime ban from office for allegedly failing to stop graft in a rice policy -- a case her supporters say is a junta-driven effort to push her out of politics. After she failed to show up in court, stunning the huge crowds of supporters who had gathered outside, judges decided to delay the ruling until September 27. “Now I know of her whereabouts but I will not disclose it until after September 27,” junta chief Prayut Chan-O-Cha told reporters. “She has not yet applied for political asylum, and I don’t know whether she will be able to get it,” he added. Junta and party sources have previously told AFP that Yingluck is believed to have joined her brother Thaksin -- another former premier ousted in a coup -- in Dubai. Thaksin has kept a home in the city since he fled Thailand in 2008 to avoid jail for a corruption conviction. The junta has denied any prior knowledge of Yingluck’s plan to escape. But many in the kingdom find that difficult to believe given the regime’s tight security net and constant surveillance of the former premier. Analysts say Yingluck most likely brokered a deal with the military leaders, who would have been eager to see off a popular politician poised to become a martyr for the kingdom’s withering democracy. The junta is desperate to avoid unrest and may also have feared that a harsh jail sentence would have unleashed protests from Yingluck’s fervent supporters. Authorities are now investigating three police officers who allegedly assisted the former premier with her getaway. Thailand’s deputy junta leader, Pravit Wongsuan, says the officers drove Yingluck to the border of Cambodia, which she entered through an informal crossing before likely flying on to a third country. MANILA - An officer in Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s elite military security force was found shot dead on Tuesday inside the sprawling presidential compound, an official said. Major Harin Gonzaga, 37, was found by his wife with a gunshot wound to the heart inside his room in the Malacanang compound in Manila, said Brigadier General Lope Dagoy, head of the Presidential Security Group. Dagoy said there were no initial signs of foul play or any indication of a struggle but police were still investigating. The incident took place far from Duterte’s residence inside the compound, Dagoy said, adding that even other members of the security force were unaware of the shooting until Gonzaga’s wife found the body. The wife, who is a sergeant in the security

force, said the couple were not facing any problems apart from Gonzaga’s heavy workload, Dagoy told reporters. Gonzaga was in charge of the security force’s operations and was not one of the president’s personal guards, he added. Duterte was elected in a landslide last year on a vow to eradicate illegal drugs in society by killing up to 100,000 traffickers and addicts. To this day each region of every island of the archipelago has its own unique storytelling tradition many of which continue to evolve with great dynamism. Indonesian cinema however is still struggling to find its own unique voice.

Whereas Indonesia’s storytelling history is strongly rooted in open spaces, theatrical presentations involving song dance and visual arts as well as varying degrees of audience participation, the medium of film requires a relatively closed space and a passive experience for the spectator. Film however also allows for a wider range of possibilities in terms of manipulating time, space and other dimensions, including characters. Given the wealth that Indonesian artists have to draw on from their own artist heritages, there is certainly a lot of room for these two art forms to come together in unprecedented ways. In fact it is this idea that has captured the imagination of renowned Balinese writer, activists and performer Cok Sawitri and film director Adrian Tan who are presently collaborating on an experimental theatrical film project entitled ‘Rahim’, that explicitly seeks to explore how a film can be made using distinctly theatrical devices. Sawitri first approached Tan with the idea of creating a new type of movie that would draw strongly on the theatrical traditions of Indonesia but also unitize the unique aspects of film to present a new genre of cinema. Cok Sawitri ‘s script for ‘Rahim’ was originally written as a monologue, which made it all the more interesting to work with for this project, explained Tan. The monologistic nature of film represented by this script would be transformed into more of a dialogue for the theatrical film. This dialogue however, though spoken by different characters in fact suggests a kind of inner dialogue within the character of Nagari. The script for Rahim (Womb) tells the story of a woman’s struggle to face her own externalized inner demons and invites the audience to look beyond judgments of differences, to feel their way towards generalized compassion for themselves and others. The womb after all represents the common source from which we all come. Although shot scene by scene as films are, Rahim is taking a unique approach to this process. On September 21, Setia Darma House of Masks and Puppets hosted a theatrical presentation of the shooting of three scenes. “Having a live audience witness the filming is part of our attempt to maintain certain theatrical elements in the filming process”, explained Sawitri. It soon became apparent to the audience, however that this was no ordinary film shoot nor was it a theatrical performance as we know. The stage area was separated into two spaces The first space included the seated

The second space was visible to the audience only through a doorway to where the acting took place. Seated at a table, a lone actress is interrogated by (same actress different character) an unidentified authority figure about why she had her womb removed. While the live actress was visible to the audience through the doorway she was also being captured by a camera seated across from her through which her image was then projected onto the screens in the first room. The non-present pre-recorded interrogator’s image would appear on these same screens to ask a question and then the live capture of the actress seated before the audience would respond. This response was witnessed both live from the actress seen in profile and simultaneously on the the screens in frontal view. Thus unfolded the interrogative dialogue in such a way that left the audience wondering if the woman was in fact being interrogated by another or if it was her own conscious that was persecuting her. The next scene involved another live actress appearing as what seemed to be yet another manifestation of her own conscious. With hair down and dressed in loose house dresses, the two actresses break into song but soon the one stands on the table and dances a kind of relaxed Legong much to the dismay of the other who tries to stop the

dancing that she clearly takes as a kind of assault. The scene brought to life a glimpse into the world of Balinese women beyond the pageantry and exotification that they are so often subject to, exposing the violent story that is seldom highlighted but is central to the Legong dance. The sub-text of this scene also spoke to the kind of subtle aggression that the exotification and commodification that the Legong Dance represents. The addition of song and dance into this scene added another dimension that severely blurred the lines between reality and fiction or experience and hallucination. Before the next scene, the actresses did their costume change and makeup in front of the audience, breaking the suspension of disbelief that is so highly valued in both film and theatre. Although somewhat jarring, this akward moment underlined the fact that both performers and audience were in fact sharing a common time and space as opposed to the illusion of separation that performance implies. It is this type of illusion of separation underlying all forms of conflict whether internal or external that this project speaks to both in terms of form and content. The third scene showed the interrogator chatting and laughing sardonically with her twin before they too break into song asking “and who are you?”. The two continued singing as they approached the audience turning the question to the crowd. There was another uncomfortable moment as the members of the audience wondered if

the separation between actor and spectator would not only be exposed for the fraud that it is but that the audience might also become subject to the interrogators bitting question of the very nature of identity. The show then came to an end and Cok Sawitri stepped out of the doorway to address the audience. WIth characteristic charm and wit, she casually explained to the audience that what they had just witnessed was in fact the outcome of the latest in a series of eight workshops aimed at creating a new type of collaboration between film and theatre. Unlike film that allows for multiple takes and clever editing, theatre demands of the actors a sense of responsibility for their actions or acting. Similalry the story of ‘Rahim’ exposes the need for us all to take responsibility for our own actions, how we position ourselves on the social stage of life and how we react to different pressures. Although the presentation on Thursday night only included a few scenes of the entire story of the film, the talented cast and crew managed to express something essentially human about our struggle as individuals. The myriad ways that we seek to reconcile ourselves with both inner and outer conditions was clearly expressed despite the lack of distinct story line in the presentation. Reaching beyond a sequential calculated and logical narrative the presentation nonetheless managed to invite the audience to appreciate our sameness as humans and in this appreciation of sameness to develop a greater capacity for compassion.(kmb)

Europe considering blocking Iran sanctions if US leaves nuclear deal

WASHINGTON ? European diplomats warned the Trump administration on Monday that Europe is prepared to block U.S. efforts to reimpose international sanctions against Iran as long as Tehran continues to comply with its obligations under the nuclear deal.

If the U.S. pulls out of the nuclear agreement ? known as the JCPOA ? and reapplies sanctions that target not only Iran, but other countries who do business with Iran, the European Union could take advantage of a statute dating back to the mid-1990s that would protect European companies from being penalized under the sanctions, EU ambassador to the United States David O’Sullivan said Monday. “We have the blocking statute ... which does offer legal protection to European companies which are threatened by

the extraterritorial nature of U.S. sanctions in certain circumstances, Sullivan said, speaking at the Atlantic Center alongside French, British and German ambassadors. “I have no doubt that if this scenario materializes, which it’s not clear it will, the European Union will act to protect the legitimate interests of our companies with all the means at our disposal.” Because Washington has virtually no trade relations with Tehran, U.S. sanctions against Iran aren’t an effective nuclear deterrent unless other countries join the effort. In the years leading up to the 2015 nuclear deal, European countries, as well as China and Russia, cooperated with U.S.-led efforts to choke off Iran’s economy in hopes of persuading Iran to negotiate restrictions on its nuclear program. But now that Iran has scaled back its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief, the countries that helped negotiate the JCPOA see no reason to cut off trade with Tehran again.

European diplomats warned the Trump administration on Monday that Europe is prepared to block U.S. efforts to reimpose international sanctions against Iran as long as Tehran continues to comply with its obligations under the nuclear deal.

The warning from the EU ambassador came ahead of an Oct. 15 deadline, when President Donald Trump has to inform to Congress whether Iran is complying with the nuclear deal. That deadline is the result of legislation passed by Congress in 2015 that requires the president to make several certifications to lawmakers every 90 days. Those certifications go beyond the technical requirements set forth in the JCPOA. One certification, for example, requires the president to confirm that providing sanctions relief to Iran is “vital to the national security interests” of the U.S. The International Atomic Energy Agency, the organization tasked with monitoring the use of nuclear technology, confirmed last month for the eighth time that Iran was complying with the JCPOA. But the subjective nature of the reporting requirements in the law passed by Congress means that Trump could opt to decertify Iranian compliance, even as the IAEA says Tehran is fulfilling its obligations. If Trump does not certify Iranian compliance, Congress has 60 days to decide whether to fast-track legislation to reimpose nuclear sanctions, a move that Iran would likely claim is a violation of the agreement. European countries face an awkward situation if the U.S. reimposes sanctions against Iran without definitive evidence that Iran has breached the nuclear deal. They will have to choose between breaking publicly with a key ally or losing credibility by failing to honor a diplomatic agreement. Trump said last week that he had decided what he will do on Oct. 15, but he’s keeping his decision a secret ? even to U.S. allies who are party to the agreement. He met with British Prime Minister Theresa May for 50 minutes last week in New York but didn’t tell her whether the U.S. would continue to enforce the JCPOA, British ambassador Kim Darroch said Monday. Trump has called the Iran deal an “embarrassment” to the U.S. and made clear his preference to scrap the agreement and replace it with one that also constrains Iran’s ballistic missile program and has indefinite restrictions on its nuclear program (some provisions in the current deal sunset after 10-15 years). The president has ordered an interagency Iran policy review as part of an effort to come up with an alternative to staying in the JCPOA. That review is still ongoing. (rtr)

Indonesian militant jailed for life over church attack

JAKARTA - An Indonesian extremist who carried out a deadly attack on a church with a group of militants loyal to the Islamic State (IS) group was jailed for life on Monday. Juhanda, who like many Indonesians goes only by one name, was found guilty of an act of terrorism that killed a toddler and hurt three

other small children on Borneo island last November. “The defendant has been proven guilty of committing a terrorism act,” Judge Surung Simanjuntak, from the East Jakarta Court, said. Prosecutors said Juhanda travelled to the Protestant church in the city of Samarinda by motorbike, intending to carry out the attack.

But instead he fell from the bike and detonated a Molotov cocktail in front of the church where the youngsters, aged between two and four, had been playing. Two-year-old Intan Olivia Marbun was killed in the blast. Juhanda was arrested along with four others, with all five accused of belonging to the Jamaah Ansharut Daulah
