RIO DE JANEIRO - Time seems to run at a different pace for Elza Soares. The Brazilian samba legend is 81 but on the eve of a Rio de Janeiro concert for her recent album “Deus e Mulher” (“God is a woman”), you wouldn’t think so.

“Let me tell you, my age has nothing in common with the way I feel,” she told AFP by telephone ahead of Tuesday’s show in her native city. In her unmistakable tone, Soares described herself as excited as ever to be going on stage, even if she now sings seated. “I consider this a good moment, an extraordinary one in my career. I don’t know if it’s the best. The best was when I started. Things are always marvelous when you start,” she said. Soares’s powerful voice is an integral part of Brazilian music. She embodied samba and went on to play a major role in cutting edge modern interpretations of the sensual, rhythmic Brazilian sound, mixing in everything from bossa nova to jazz, Afrobeat and funk. Her sheer longevity and extraordinarily dramatic personal life -- including multiple tragedies and a turbulent marriage to the much-loved footballer Garrincha -- have made her nothing less than a national figure. The self-confidence and dedication to music making that have carried her along that epic road clearly remain intact. Asked if there were any love interests in her life now, she joked: “I’m dating Elza Soares.” KENA BETANCUR / AFP “I’m in love with her, this incredible woman. WASHINGTON - Rom-com “Crazy Rich Asians” continued to sparkle in North America, topping the box office for the second weekend running, according to industry estimates Sunday. The Warner Bros. adaptation of Kevin Kwan’s best-selling novel of the same name took $25 million, almost matching its $26.5 million debut last week, box office tracker Exhibitor Relations said. Starring veteran actress Michelle Yeoh, British-Malaysian former BBC host Henry Golding and American sitcom star Constance Wu, the film tells the story

of a American economics professor who meets her super-wealthy boyfriend’s family in Singapore. It is the first major studio release with a mostly Asian cast since “The Joy Luck Club” in 1993. Shark attack thriller “The Meg” clung on to the runner-up spot for another week, taking $13 million -- a significant tumble from last week’s earnings of $21.2 million. It stars action movie regular Jason Statham as a rescue diver who tries to save scientists trapped in a submarine from a huge, prehistoric shark. In at third was newly-released mystery “The Happytime Mur-

ders,” which took $10 million. Based in a world where humans and puppets co-exist, the film follows a joint police force as they probe a recent murder spree targeting puppet TV stars. On its heels with takings of $8 million was Tom Cruise’s action blockbuster “Mission: Impossible Fallout,” which took fourth place in its fifth weekend in theaters. Fifth went to Disney’s live-animated hybrid Christopher Robin, which took $6.3 million. Ewan McGregor plays Winnie the Pooh’s now grown-up and stressed-out pal who reunites with his old stuffed friend. (afp)

Gold medallists Indonesia’s Hendy (L) and Yola Primadona Jampil compete in the men’s double pencak silat event at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta on August 27, 2018.

‘This victory is for Lombok’

Men’s doubles pair Yola Primadona Jampil and Hendy, who won the gold medal in the artistic pencak silat category, dedicated their victory to the people of Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), who were suffering from the 7.0-magnitude earthquake a few weeks ago. “We presented this victory to the people of Lombok who have been suffering from the disaster. They deserve to take part in this joy of victory,” said Yola, after obtaining a gold medal at Padepokan Pencak Silat Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII), East Jakarta, on Monday. Yola and Hendy obtained the highest points at 580 and defeated their opponents from Vietnam, Duc Danh Tran and Hong Quan Le, who got 562 points and had to settle for the silver medal. They also defeated Malaysians Mohd Taqiyuddin Hamid and Muhammad Afifi Nordin, who took home the bronze. “We are grateful to be able to do the best that was followed by seven men’s doubles groups. We thank the people of

Indonesia for their support,” Yola said. The gold medal in the men’s doubles is the 14th gold medal for Indonesia in the 2018 Asian Games. There are still other athletes, namely Nunu Nugraha, Asep Yuldan Sani and Anggi Faisal Mubarok competing in the men’s team category. Besides the artistic silat match on Monday afternoon, there was also the final match of the sparring category, which was followed by five Indonesian competitors, including Abdul Malik, who will face Malaysian fighter Muhammad Faizul M Nasir in the men’s B: 50 to 55 kilogram category. The second match will feature Aji Bangkit Pamungkas against Singaporean athlete Sheik Ferdous

Sheik Alauddin in men’s class I: 85 to 90 kg. In the third match, Iqbal Candra Pratama will fight Vietnamese fighter Ngoc Toan Nguyen in men’s class D: 60 to 65 kg. In the fourth match, Sarah Tria Monita will fight Lao PDR’s Nong Oy Vongphakdy in women’s class C: 55 to 60 kg, and in the fifth match, Komang Harik Adi Putra will compete against Malaysian Mohd Al Jufferi Jamari in men’s class E: 65 to 70 kg. For athletes from quake-hit Lombok competing at their own country’s Asian Games, the pressure is far greater than the usual quest for gold. Competitors from the picturesque island have anxiously followed news of deadly earthquakes that killed more than 500 people, hundreds of miles

from Indonesia’s host cities Jakarta and Palembang -- and hope their performances can bring a few smiles to faces back home. “I was so worried about my family -- it was a little hard to sleep,” said 18-year-old sprinter Lalu Muhammad Zohri, who hails from the worst-affected northern part of the island. “They called me to tell me not to worry, to just focus on my race. I tried my best,” he added, after reaching the men’s 100m final, where he finished seventh. “Now I can’t wait to go to Lombok to see my family.” Bronze-winning beach volleyball duo Dhita Juliana and Putu Dini Jasita Utami, who are also from Lombok, have captured the hearts of the home fans cheering for them across the country and from the sidelines of Asia’s regional Olympics. They can barely walk a few metres in Palembang without being asked for a selfie

yet always oblige, hoping their smiles and strength will resonate back home. “We hope all Lombok people are okay, and we are trying our best here to at least share some happiness with them when we win,” said Dhita Juliana, adding that they have been touch throughout the competition. Some 555 people have been killed and hundreds of thousands left homeless on the beautiful island of Lombok, around 700 miles (1,100km) from Games host cities Jakarta and Palembang.
