LOS ANGELES — When Robert Redford first acquired the film rights to Bill Bryson’s memoir “A Walk in the Woods,” he knew exactly who he wanted to play his Appalachian Trail hiking comrade: Paul Newman.

Not only were the two men responsible for some of cinema’s most iconic duos — they were lifetime friends as well.

The three awards presented to the Bali Safari & Marine Park were for Best Leading Theme Park, Best Leading Theme Park Resort for the Mara River Lodge and Best Leading Tourism Show for the Bali Agung Show.

Bali’s Chief Representative of the Bank of Indonesia (BI) , Dewi Setyowati, said that the loosening of provisions is based on the fact that the property and motor vehicle sectors are connected and have considerable impacts on other economic sectors. “Therefore, the influence of the loosening of loan regulations is expected to boost economic growth,” said Dewi Setyowati.

In addition, the policy is expected to encourage banking mediation in the distribution of loans to the public. The new policy is set out in the BI ‘s Regulation No.17/10/PBI/2015 on Loan to Value ratio and Financing to Value ratio for loans for the financing of properties and the down payments for loans for motor vehicles. The regulation will come into effect as of June 18, 2015.

He added that Bali is even more famous than Indonesia so many investors are competing to buy property here. “Now it is time for Balinese people to become more vigilant and selective about which investors can buy land here. Both those buying the land as well as those selling land are subject to criminal charges if the money used to buy the land is from the proceeds of corruption or illegal activities,” he concluded. Balinese Temple Ceremony

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Political parties fail to shape young cadres DENPASAR - Numerous of regions in Indonesia are scheduled to hold simultaneous local leader elections on December 9, 2015. In Bali alone, five counties; Badung, Bangli, Karangasem, Tabanan, Jembrana as well as the municipality of Denpasar will hold democratic celebrations on the same day.

Of the five elections, Denpasar is the only one threatened to be postponed based on the fact that there is only one pair of qualifying candidates. The Denpasar Electoral Commission has therefor re-opened registration for candidates. If there are still no candidate, Denpasar’s election will be postponed until 2017 (if there is no government regulation in lieu of law). In a discussion entitled “The Phenomenon of Simultaneous Local Leader Election’ that was held on Wednesday (Aug. 26), the Denpasar matter was addressed.

The lack of electoral candidates, is considered by many, as a failure on the part of political parties to adequately prepare cadres who might be abel to fight for election.

A legislator from Bali’s House of representives, A.A. Ngurah Adhi Ardhana, said that local leader elec-

tion are actually a celebration that should be enjoyed by people and that it would not be very elegant to have to delay such an event.

He added that the excitement of the People should be supported by all participants of the celebration, in this case political parties in particular.

According to Ardhana, it is odd that a political party would not want to be in power. “This is an anomaly.

If even with a large voting capital -especially if they coalesce, they still do not dare to propose a candidate, what is going on?” he asked.

Ardhana sees two factors that have led to the present electoral conditions of Denpasar. The first factor has something to do with regulations that apparently allow people to take advantage of the rules to manipulate things in their favour. The second factor is related

to the political parties themselves who have not instilled a sense of wanting to struggle in their younger cadres.

“What is wrong with this election? Why are they not participating? I cannot begin to imagine what is going on in the minds of political parties that has made them not want to nominate any candidates in this election. Is it based on surveys that have made them afraid to fail and so they dare not even try? Actually, surveys only indicate the popularity of politicians before they become a candidate. Once someone is nominated as a candidate, only then is their likelihood of being elected measured. All pairs of candidates start from zero and have six months to improve their odds of being elected. I find his situation very odd,” he said in a puzzled tone.

Ardhana, also said that he finds

it ridiculous if parties are in fact deliberately trying to delay the election until 2017 with the hopes that the popularity of incumbent candidates will become eroded over time and he worries that this phenomena could insight a sort of vendetta where elections would continuously be delayed.

“If this happens, would the politicians not feel ashamed? In the case of Denpasar, I think that candidates that did register were not not illegible, and if fact did not want to qualify. If they do not want to qualify, what does that means?” he said rhetorically.

Former member of the Denpasar Electoral Commission, IGA Diah Yuniti, is also deeply saddened to see that Denpasar “lacks” candidates for this election. What is presently occurring in regards to Denpasar’s election is a case that has never even been considered by legislators (of the laws on elections—Ed). STOCKHOLM - Hennes & Mauritz, the world’s second-biggest fashion retailer, is launching a new effort to promote recycling as it seeks to cut its environmental impact, boost its ethical credentials and address looming shortages of raw materials.

The move comes as critics point out the damage being caused by a throwaway culture fuelled by cheap clothing that has seen a sharp rise in the number of garments sold annually around the world.

Sweden’s H&M, which is launching a line of jeans containing recycled cotton next week, will offer an annual 1-million-euro ($1.16 million) prize for new techniques to recycle clothes, Chief Executive Karl-Johan Persson told Reuters.

“No company, fast-fashion or not, can continue exactly like today,” Persson said. “The (prize’s) largest potential lies with finding new technology that means we can recycle the fibres with unchanged quality.”

Existing cotton recycling methods make poor-quality fibres, and there is no efficient way to recycle garments of mixed materials, so the vast majority of clothes end up in land fill.

Johan Rockstrom, environmental science professor at Stockholm University and a jury member for the H&M prize, said the fashion industry needs to find new business models to respond to global resource shortages.

“This is a great challenge for H&M whose trademark is cheap clothes at good quality ... The fact it’s cheap means there’s a risk people buy and throw away, or buy too much,” he said.

H&M revenues have more than doubled since 2006, reaching 151 billion Swedish crowns ($18.3 billion) in the year to last November,

making it the second biggest fashion retailer after Spain’s Inditex.

The award is being launched by a foundation established by H&M that is funded by the retailer and the Persson family, its main owners.

Bernstein analyst Anne-Charlotte Windal said the industry’s sustainability drive reflected the dilemma facing “fast-fashion” companies that constantly churn out new styles.

“The model only works if they encourage very frequent purchases, but the consumers are aware of the increasing effect it has on the environment,” she said.

Other companies are coming up with their own solutions.

Mud Jeans is a Dutch company which leases its garments to consumers and then offers them a replacement each year, repairing and reselling the used ones or recycling

the fabric.

“This is the future: producers that are responsible for their own waste,” said Chief Executive Bert van Son. “Our company can do this because we are quite small: that it is why we can do these kinds of crazy things because we can keep cotton pure. If you are a big store chain it is very complicated if you mix cotton and polyester.”

H&M joined forces earlier this year with Puma-owner Kering to support start-up Worn Again which is developing a technology for separating and extracting fibres in mixed-material garments.

Meanwhile, a company called Re:newcell is developing a method to improve the quality of recycled cotton fibres and hopes to build a first factory in coming years.

Currently, only about a maximum of 20 percent of recycled cotton can be used in a new pair of jeans because the fibre length is shortened in the shredding process, impacting quality, H&M says.

H&M and Kering are not alone in beating the recycling drum.

Like H&M, Britain’s Marks & Spencer and Italy’s Calzedonia collects used items in their stores for recycling.

On a much smaller scale, Finnish entrepreneurs Pure Waste Textiles have managed to produce sweat shirts from 100 percent recycled cotton after improving existing recycling techniques and by recycling offcuts from clothes factories.

However, others believe that recycling is just a distraction from the real challenge of the fashion industry: persuading customers to keep wearing their clothes for longer.

To that end, British designer Tom Cridland is offering a 30-year guarantee on a range of T-shirts.

“I don’t believe it is fair on customers to churn out plain white T-shirts that will only last a year or two,” he said. “I can’t compete on price so I have to do something different.” (rtr)

Deputy Chief of Bali Police, Nyoman Suryasta, revealed that Karangasem is predicted to be the most vulnerable to potential conflict. Bali Police will therefore be deploying a mobile brigade and riot squad to Karangasem.

“Based on the results of our monitoring and coordinations with the Electoral Commission, the political dynamics in Karangasem rare contentious. For this reason, we are placing more attention on security in this region,” said Deputy Chief of Bali Police after the assembly of the Praja Agung operations forces 2015 at Puputan Margarana Square, Renon, Denpasar, on Wednesday (Aug. 26).

To make sure that the implementation of local leader election runs smoothly, the national police, Indonesian military, local government, Electoral Commission, Electoral Supervisory Board, Electoral Supervisory Commission, other law enforcement agencies as well as all members of society, must work synergistically.

“Synergy amongst all stakeholders must be present so as to manage any problems that arise, so that they do not develop or become widespread and create contingency situations that could impede the

course of the local leader election,” said Suryasta.

For ensuring security at polling stations, security officers are truly ready for the tasks and are prepared to maintain neutrality. In addition, Suryasta has ordered his personnel in the field, to increase awareness about the potential threat of terrorism that could take advantage of the moment in the local leader election 2015.

“I want to remind everyone that the main indicators of the success of this year’s local leader election will largely be determined by the professionalism and neutrality each and everyone of the electoral organizers, and the support of the community in creating a safe and successful local leader election,” he concluded. The suspect, 41-year-old Vester Flanagan, shot himself as police pursued him on a Virginia highway hours after the shooting. Flanagan, who was African-American, died later at a hospital, police said.

The journalists who were killed were reporter Alison Parker, 24, and cameraman Adam Ward, 27.

Both journalists were white, as is a woman who they were interviewing. The woman was wounded and was in stable condition, a hospital spokesman said.

Social media postings by a person who appeared to be Flanagan indicated the suspect had grievances against the station, CBS affiliate WDBJ7 in Roanoke, Virginia, which let him go two years ago.

The person also posted video that appeared to show the attack filmed from the gunman’s vantage point.

Flanagan sent ABC News a 23page fax about two hours after the shooting, saying his attack was triggered by the June 17 mass shooting at a black church in Charleston, South Carolina, the network said.

Nine people were killed, and a white man has been charged in that rampage.

The network cited Flanagan as saying he had suffered racial discrimination, sexual harassment and bullying at work. He had been attacked by black men and white women, and for being a gay black man, he said. “The church shooting was the tipping point ... but my anger has been building steadily,”

ABC News cited the fax as saying.

“I’ve been a human powder keg for a while ... just waiting to go BOOM!” The on-air shooting occurred at about 6:45 a.m. EDT (1045 GMT) at Bridgewater Plaza, a Smith Mountain Lake recreation site about 200 miles (320 km) southwest of Washington.

The broadcast was abruptly interrupted by the sound of gunshots as Parker and the woman being interviewed, Vicki Gardner, executive director of the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce, screamed and ducked for cover. Hours after the shooting, someone claiming to have filmed it posted video online. The videos were posted to a Twitter account and on Facebook by a man identifying himself as Bryce Williams, which was Flanagan’s on-air name.

The videos were removed shortly afterward. In one video, a handgun was clearly visible as the person filming approached the female reporter. The person purporting to be Williams also posted, “I filmed the shooting see Facebook” as well as saying one of the victims had “made racist comments.”

In the fax to ABC News, Flanagan praised shooters who had carried out mass killings at Virginia Tech University in 2007 and at Colorado’s Columbine High School in 1999.

ABC News said Flanagan called the network shortly after 10 a.m.

Flanagan said he was called a “monkey” by a producer in the lawsuit filed in federal court against Tallahassee station WTWC in 2000. He also said a supervisor at the station called black people lazy. The Florida case was settled and dismissed the next year, court records show.

HONG KONG — Hong Kong police charged teenage student leader Joshua Wong on Thursday for his role last year in storming government headquarters, which helped trigger 79 days of prodemocracy street occupations that gripped the Asian financial center.

Wong, whose Scholarism group played a key role in the protests, reported to a police station where he was charged with inciting and participating in an illegal assembly.

The charges came nearly a year after Wong and dozens of student activists stormed a fenced-off courtyard outside government headquarters during an evening rally

to protest Beijing’s plan to restrict elections in the semiautonomous Chinese region.

Police arrested Wong and other key leaders, which drove more people into the streets. Two days later, on Sept. 28, police fired volleys of tear gas in an attempt to disperse the crowds, which only enraged the protesters further and kick-started what came to be known both as the Umbrella Movement and Occupy Central.

Wong posted photos of his police charge sheets on his Facebook account. He is scheduled to appear in a magistrate’s court on Sept. 2.

Two other student leaders, Alex Chow and Nathan Law, also face

charges relating to illegal assembly over the same incident, according to local media reports. Chow is the former secretary general of the Hong Kong Federation of Students, which also played a major role in the protests. Law is the current leader.

Wong, 18, is also expected to appear in court on Friday to face two other charges of obstructing police at a separate, earlier protest in which he and others burned a cardboard copy of a Beijing policy document that asserted full authority over Hong Kong, a former British colony promised a high degree of control over its own affairs until 2047. BUSINESS US economy likely grew more in spring than first estimated

WASHINGTON — The U.S. economy likely gained more momentum in the spring than the government previously estimated. The question now is whether shrunken global stock markets and a sharp slowdown in China will weaken the economy in coming months.

The Commerce Department on Thursday will update its estimate of the economy’s growth, as measured by the gross domestic product, for the April-June quarter.

A month ago, the government calculated that the economy grew at a 2.3 percent annual rate last quarter. That figure marked a rebound from the January-March quarter, when growth slowed to an anemic 0.6 percent rate, mainly because of a severe winter and other temporary factors.

Economists surveyed by data firm FactSet have forecast that

the government will now estimate that the economy expanded at a stronger 3 percent annual rate last quarter.

About half the increased growth is expected to have come from greater stockpiling of supplies than the government had initially estimated. But that buildup of inventory is expected to mean slower growth in the current July-September quarter. Analysts had originally expected annualized growth in the second half of the year to top 3 percent. Now, many think growth this summer reached a slower annual

rate of around 2.8 percent.

Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics, has predicted that after a quarter of working down unwanted inventories, the economy will accelerate to a 3.5 percent annual rate in the October-December period. But that forecast is based on the expectation that the stock market’s slide will stabilize before it damages consumer and business confidence.

“My forecast rests on the assumption that this is a garden variety market correction, with stock prices dropping by 10 percent from their recent high,” Zandi said. “If we get a bigger decline of 20 percent, then that will hurt consumption and housing, and we will not get the job growth we are expecting.”

A decline in stock prices of 10 percent is generally considered a market correction, while a fall of 20 percent is viewed as the start of a bear market.

On Wednesday, stocks rallied to recoup some of the huge losses incurred in the previous sessions.

The Dow Jones industrial average jumped 619 points, its biggest one-day gain in seven years. That snapped a six-day losing streak in which the Dow tumbled about 1,900 points, a plunge that wiped out more than $2 trillion in corporate value.

Analysts cautioned that there could be more turbulence ahead, in part because of unsettled conditions in China. Beijing has devalued its currency and taken other steps to address a major slowdown in

its economy, the world’s secondlargest.

Wall Street took some comfort Wednesday from comments by William Dudley, president of the New York Federal Reserve Bank. Dudley told reporters that the case for a Fed rate hike in September is “less compelling to me than it was a few weeks ago,” given China’s troubles, falling oil prices and weakness in emerging markets.

Before the recent turmoil, many economists had thought that signs of an improving U.S. economy would lead the Fed to begin raising its key short-term rate, which it’s kept at a record low near zero since late 2008. Now, many think the Fed will postpone its first rate hike until December or perhaps even later. (ap)

China sets yuan rate at four-year low against dollar

SHANGHAI - China’s central bank on Thursday set its central rate for the yuan currency at a fouryear low against the US dollar, a move analysts said reflected reduced expectations for the unit following a devaluation.

The yuan was fixed at 6.4085 to the greenback, according to the China Foreign Exchange Trade System, just 0.07 percent weaker from the previous day. But it was the lowest since August 2011, the Shanghai Securities News said on its website.

The move follows an interest rate cut announced on Tuesday and a slumping stock market, which has fallen more than 40 percent since peaking in midJune.

“The yuan depreciated as growing market expectations for yuan depreciation have been gradually fulfilled after the one-off devaluation on August 11,” Liu Dongliang, a senior analyst at China Merchants Bank in Shenzhen, told AFP. The central bank on August 11 devalued the yuan by nearly two percent, saying the decision was aimed at moving towards a more flexible exchange rate though the market interpreted it as a sign of economic weakness. It fell further in the following days.

The yuan is restricted to trading up or down two percent from the daily rate on the national foreign exchange market.

Before the August 11 change, the central bank used to decide its daily yuan reference rate by polling market-makers, but now says it takes into consideration the previous day’s close, foreign exchange supply and demand and the rates of major currencies.

Gong Kebyar draws abundant spectators

Ayu Kayun Hartatih (all from the ISI) as well as Ida Bagus Sulinggih from Jembrana Education Agency, each participant delivers its best performance.

Gong Kebyar Karya Budaya from Negara subdistrict getting the first chance came with Pepanggulan Tabuh Telu creation and Jaran Badeng. Uniquely, this Jaran Badeng composition is inspired by the story of their ancestors related to the origins of the Tegal Badeng village. It is said that the village name comes from the attack of wild horses that destroyed the village.

As a response, the village ruler assigned its troops dressed in black by forming very strong troops. Due to raging horses, the area originally named Tegal Gegesan was then changed into blackening and due to this incident the village was then renamed into Tegal Badeng. Until now the name is still used for the village.

In the meantime, Gong Kebyar Gita Kumara, the envoy of Negara subdistrict, is also trying to appear maximally by presenting gamelan music composition with ngericik and ngerocok creation and metukup- tukupan traditional games. The games tell about a group of children that were playing traditional hide-and-seek games currently replaced by modern games and TV shows.

Magda Mich, spokeswoman for a culture institute that had the colorful arch planted in downtown Warsaw, said Thursday that it was a temporary installation and was long

planned to be moved to another location, still to be announced.

The six-color, 9 meters (30 feet)high rainbow by artist Julita Wojcik started in 2010 as half-arch calling for renovation of an old cloister. A full rainbow, it advertised Poland’s 2011 EU presidency in Brussels.

China detains 11over deadly warehouse explosion

BEIJING — Chinese prosecutors have detained 11 government officials and company executives over a massive warehouse explosion that killed at least 145 people in the country’s worst industrial disaster in recent years.

A notice on the national prosecutor’s website said Thursday they included current and retired officials in the port city of Tianjin, along with others working for the company that runs the port, the largest in northern China.

All the government officials are accused of dereliction of duty and abusing their positions, the notice said. They are from agencies overseeing transportation, port operations, workplace safety, planning and land resources, and customs. It points to a charge that the dereliction of duty was widespread and included several departments.

The Aug. 12 explosions at the warehouse owned by Ruihai Logistics were not only one of China’s worst accidents but the deadliest ever for first responders, with 115 police and firefighters among the dead and missing.

The investigation has focused on how the warehouse gained permission to handle sodium cyanide and other dangerous chemicals despite being located inside a legally-mandated 1,000meter (1,000-yard) buffer zone from homes and roads. The investigation has also found that the warehouse was storing more

chemicals than it was equipped to handle and had kept some in a loading zone rather than storing them securely.

The responsible parties “failed to take strong measures in response to the Ruihai company’s illegal and unregulated actions, did not assiduously carry out their duties and issued business permits in violations of rules,” the prosecutor’s notice said.

Police have already detained 12 Ruihai employees as part of their investigation and are also looking into a company suspected of providing bogus safety assessments. (ap)

LISBON, Portugal — Portugal’s National Election Commission says 21 parties, some in coalitions, will field candidates in a general election on Oct. 4.

The commission said late Wednesday that only 14 parties will run in all 22 electoral districts. The Social Democratic Party and the Popular Party — which formed Portugal’s center-right coalition government for

the past four years — are standing together. Their main rival is the centerleft Socialist Party. Between them, the three main parties are expected to collect more than 70 percent of the vote, similar to previous elections.

All the main parties say they will abide by the fiscal discipline required by being in the 19-nation eurozone, although the Socialists have promised to ease some austerity measures. (ap)

NEW YORK — Researchers have linked a sophisticated hacking scheme targeting Iranian dissidents back to Iran. A report released Thursday by the Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs describes how the hackers used text message and phone-based phishing to try to get around the security of Google’s Gmail and access the accounts of their targets.

The attacks studied by the Citizen Lab were very similar to others connected to Iranian hackers, the report says. According to the report, some of the attacks began when the targets received text messages that appeared to be from Google saying that there had been an unauthorized attempt to access their Gmail accounts.

The hackers would then follow up with a carefully crafted email notification containing personal details and stating that the login attempt had been from “The Iran,” boosting the fears of people already worried about Iranian hackers.

The emails contained links directing the target to a page where they could reset their password. But in fact, the links were to phishing sites designed to collect the target’s password.

The hackers would then, in real time, use the password to login to the user’s account and trigger the sending of an identification code to the target.

Gmail uses the code as a form of two-factor authentication, which adds

a second layer of security on top of a person’s password. The hackers would then wait for the target to enter the code, collect it through the fraudulent website, and then use it to take control of the account.

In other cases, the targets were contacted by phone by a person speaking English or Farsi, the predominate language in Iran, who would make a “proposal” related to the target’s business activities. The fake proposal, usually promising thousands of dollars, would then be sent to the target’s Gmail in the form of an email containing a fake Google Drive link.

When the target clicked on the drive, they would be prompted to login with the Google credentials and ultimately the two-factor identification code, just like in the cases of the text messages.

While attempts to circumvent two-factor authentication security are nothing new when it comes to financial fraud-related hackings, the practice is fairly new to politically motivated attacks.

“It may be that, as a growing number of potential targets have begun using two-factor authentication on their email accounts out of a concern for their security, politically motivated attackers are borrowing from a playbook that financial criminals have written over the past decade,” the report reads. INDONESIA BI forecasts moderate economic growth in 2015

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s central bank, Bank Indonesia (BI), has forecast a moderate economic growth at around 4.9 percent for Indonesia in 2015.

BI Governor Agus Martowardojo on Thursday expressed optimism that the domestic economy would grow better in the second semester compared to the previous semester, which witnessed a slowdown.

“Thus, the economic growth is expected to be between 4.7 and 5.1 percent, or around 4.9 percent,” the minister stated.

The government is currently facing a huge global economic challenge. The global economic growth is forecast at 3.3 percent, lower than the realized growth of 3.4 percent in 2014.

It indicates that the global economic development is not encouraging enough, he noted.

“Despite some improvement in advanced countries such as the United States, we need to focus on China, which had enjoyed a growth of over 10 percent in the past 20 years, and has dropped to 7.4 percent. Its economy is projected to grow at 6.8 percent in 2015. China is a major economy, so when it experiences a decline in economic growth, there are some impacts,” he remarked.

Other developing countries such as Brazil, Turkey, India, and South Africa, which have so far developed encouragingly, have also been affected by the global economic slowdown and the sentiment of the interest rate surge by the Fed, he pointed out.

The minister explained that the domestic economic slowdown in the first semester was due to the slow absorption of the state budget.

The central bank will always respond by issuing prudent and consistent policies in order to control inflation, he added.

IMF chief Lagarde to visit Indonesia next week

WASHINGTON - The International Monetary Fund managing director, Christine Lagarde, heads to Indonesia next week for talks with senior officials and a highlevel Asian finance conference, the IMF said Wednesday.

During her September 1-2 visit, Lagarde will meet with President Joko Widodo and other senior officials, including Bank Indonesia Governor Agus Martowardojo.

The visit “presents an opportunity to exchange views on recent economic developments, Indonesia’s prospects, and its role as an emerging power both in the region and globally,” the Washingtonbased crisis lender said in a statement.

Lagarde’s visit comes at a time

of heightened volatility in Asian financial markets, largely due to China’s economic slowdown and markets turmoil, as well as falling commodity prices that have hammered Indonesia and other emerging-market economies and their currencies.

Last week Indonesia’s central bank kept its key interest rate unchanged for the sixth consecutive month, as it struggled to stabilize the plunging rupiah following China’s surprise currency devaluation the prior week.

Lagarde will participate in a regional conference -- “Future of Asia’s Finance: Financing for Development 2015” -- in Jakarta on September 2, co-sponsored by the IMF and Bank Indonesia. (afp)

Serena Williams shrugs off US Open jitters for karaoke

NEW YORK — Serena Williams is trying to ignore “the elephant in the room” ahead of the U.S. Open. “I’m OK with it. I’m really not even talking about it,” the tennis pro said at an event in New York on Wednesday. If she wins the U.S. Open, which starts Aug. 31, it will be her fifth straight major title and the first calendar Grand Slam by a woman since Steffi Graf did it in 1988.

Williams instead channeled any nervous energy into singing at a karaoke night sponsored by Delta Air Lines, now in its second year.

Before the show, she said she was more worried about her song choice than her tennis game. “I’m going to make a game time decision. I always get so nervous every year like, ‘I don’t know what to do, I don’t know what to do,’” she said.

Williams, 33, ended up choosing “Under the Sea” from “The Little

Mermaid,” complete with dance moves and Caribbean accent. “We just kind of wanted to celebrate just kicking off (the) U.S. Open and having fun and relaxing and enjoying it,” said Williams.

Kei Nishikori, who is seeded fourth for the U.S. Open, also was there. After having to withdraw from the Cincinnati Masters because of fatigue and a hip injury, Nishikori said he’s now doing well.

“I’m feeling pretty good. After (Montreal) I took one week off,” he said. “I couldn’t play Cincinnati, but otherwise I’m feeling pretty good and my tennis is, you know, getting better and feeling very solid.”

Other celebrities in attendance included Laverne Cox, Uzo Aduba and Jason Biggs of Netflix’s “Orange is the New Black,” singer Estelle and actor Alan Cumming. (ap)

A wall was famously put up dividing the Yamaha garage into two separate teams when Lorenzo first came to MotoGP as a double 250cc world champion in 2008 alongside Rossi, who had won five top-class titles at that point.

The pair spent three years together before Rossi’s unsucessful 2011-12 stint at Ducati, after which they were reunited at Yamaha.

They are currently engaged in their first head-to-head title battle since 2009 - when Rossi came out on top - having drawn level at the top of the championship when Lorenzo won at Brno earlier this month.

“For the moment our relationship is better than ever,” said Lorenzo at a press conference in London ahead of this weekend’s British Grand

Prix at Silverstone.

“Before, it was not so good. But after a long time, changing so many circumstances over the years, now there is more respect between us.

“We each know that the other is so good and so strong. Our power is very similar and very equal, that’s why I think the championship in these last seven races will be so interesting.

“At this point, we’ve not had a big, big fight on the track or a situation where one of us has thought the other has made a dirty move in some corner. “At the moment we respect each other on track and outside the track too.”

Lorenzo thinks it was inevitable that they clashed first time around given their respective career positions in 2008.

“When I arrived in MotoGP, I was 20 years old, I was very ambitious and he was in the best period of his career and was protecting his space a little bit and his position in the team,” he said.

“I wanted to get close to him or beat him as soon as possible. “For this reason we had this little tension, but now I think it’s disappeared quite a bit.”

He admitted that the pressure of an intra-team title fight could revive hostilities, but doubted they would ever return to their previous level.

“For sure if in the future some situation happens that can create some friction between us, that relationship could change,” Lorenzo said. “But I don’t believe it will be as bad as it was in the past.” (net)

Lokomotiv not to quit league after FA cuts fine

SOFIA - Lokomotiv Plovdiv said they will continue their participation in the Bulgarian league after the domestic football union (BFU) nearly halved the fine on the club for their fans’ alleged racist behaviour earlier this month.

Lokomotiv were considering whether to quit the Bulgarian league after the country’s football federation (BFU) fined the club 37,500 levs ($21,224) after the Aug. 8 match against Litex Lovech.

The 2004 Bulgarian champions Lokomotiv categorically denied any wrongdoing during the 1-1 draw against Litex Lovech on Aug. 8 and said they are considering quitting the league, keeping only their youth teams.

Ideal chance for Roma to end poor run against Juventus MILAN - AS Roma have been presented with an excellent chance to end their poor recent run against Juventus when the two meet on the Sunday with the titleholders still caught in a rebuilding process. Juventus and Roma have finished first and second in Serie A in each of the last two seasons and meetings between the two during that time have been dominated by the Turin side.

Juve, Serie A champions for the last four seasons, took six points off Roma two seasons ago and four points last season as they ran away with the title. Now, the fixture list has pitted them against each other in only the second match day of the season and, with Juventus still under construction after an eventful summer, the odds appear to be stacked in favour of Rudi Garcia’s Roma, who host the match at the Stadio Olimpico.

Juventus, who saw veteran playmaker Andrea Pirlo, topscorer Carlos Tevez and midfield dynamo Arturo Vidal all leave during the summer, were disjointed and lacked their usual vitality as they slumped 1-0 at home to Udinese last Sunday.

Ideal chance for Roma to end poor run against Juventus MILAN - AS Roma have been presented with an excellent chance to end their poor recent run against Juventus when the two meet on the Sunday with the titleholders still caught in a rebuilding process. Juventus and Roma have finished first and second in Serie A in each of the last two seasons and meetings between the two during that time have been dominated by the Turin side.

Juve, Serie A champions for the last four seasons, took six points off Roma two seasons ago and four points last season as they ran away with the title. Now, the fixture list has pitted them against each other in only the second match day of the season and, with Juventus still under construction after an eventful summer, the odds appear to be stacked in favour of Rudi Garcia’s Roma, who host the match at the Stadio Olimpico.

Serena Williams shrugs off US Open jitters for karaoke

NEW YORK — Serena Williams is trying to ignore “the elephant in the room” ahead of the U.S. Open. “I’m OK with it. I’m really not even talking about it,” the tennis pro said at an event in New York on Wednesday. If she wins the U.S. Open, which starts Aug. 31, it will be her fifth straight major title and the first calendar Grand Slam by a woman since Steffi Graf did it in 1988.

Williams instead channeled any nervous energy into singing at a karaoke night sponsored by Delta Air Lines, now in its second year.

Before the show, she said she was more worried about her song choice than her tennis game. “I’m going to make a game time decision. I always get so nervous every year like, ‘I don’t know what to do, I don’t know what to do,’” she said.

Williams, 33, ended up choosing “Under the Sea” from “The Little

Mermaid,” complete with dance moves and Caribbean accent. “We just kind of wanted to celebrate just kicking off (the) U.S. Open and having fun and relaxing and enjoying it,” said Williams.

Kei Nishikori, who is seeded fourth for the U.S. Open, also was there. After having to withdraw from the Cincinnati Masters because of fatigue and a hip injury, Nishikori said he’s now doing well.

“I’m feeling pretty good. After (Montreal) I took one week off,” he said. “I couldn’t play Cincinnati, but otherwise I’m feeling pretty good and my tennis is, you know, getting better and feeling very solid.”

Other celebrities in attendance included Laverne Cox, Uzo Aduba and Jason Biggs of Netflix’s “Orange is the New Black,” singer Estelle and actor Alan Cumming. (ap)

A wall was famously put up dividing the Yamaha garage into two separate teams when Lorenzo first came to MotoGP as a double 250cc world champion in 2008 alongside Rossi, who had won five top-class titles at that point.

The pair spent three years together before Rossi’s unsucessful 2011-12 stint at Ducati, after which they were reunited at Yamaha.

They are currently engaged in their first head-to-head title battle since 2009 - when Rossi came out on top - having drawn level at the top of the championship when Lorenzo won at Brno earlier this month.

“For the moment our relationship is better than ever,” said Lorenzo at a press conference in London ahead of this weekend’s British Grand

Prix at Silverstone.

“Before, it was not so good. But after a long time, changing so many circumstances over the years, now there is more respect between us.

“We each know that the other is so good and so strong. Our power is very similar and very equal, that’s why I think the championship in these last seven races will be so interesting.

“At this point, we’ve not had a big, big fight on the track or a situation where one of us has thought the other has made a dirty move in some corner. “At the moment we respect each other on track and outside the track too.”

Lorenzo thinks it was inevitable that they clashed first time around given their respective career positions in 2008.

“When I arrived in MotoGP, I was 20 years old, I was very ambitious and he was in the best period of his career and was protecting his space a little bit and his position in the team,” he said.

“I wanted to get close to him or beat him as soon as possible. “For this reason we had this little tension, but now I think it’s disappeared quite a bit.”

He admitted that the pressure of an intra-team title fight could revive hostilities, but doubted they would ever return to their previous level.

“For sure if in the future some situation happens that can create some friction between us, that relationship could change,” Lorenzo said. “But I don’t believe it will be as bad as it was in the past.” (net)

China detains 11over deadly warehouse explosion

BEIJING — Chinese prosecutors have detained 11 government officials and company executives over a massive warehouse explosion that killed at least 145 people in the country’s worst industrial disaster in recent years.

A notice on the national prosecutor’s website said Thursday they included current and retired officials in the port city of Tianjin, along with others working for the company that runs the port, the largest in northern China.

All the government officials are accused of dereliction of duty and abusing their positions, the notice said. They are from agencies overseeing transportation, port operations, workplace safety, planning and land resources, and customs. It points to a charge that the dereliction of duty was widespread and included several departments.

The Aug. 12 explosions at the warehouse owned by Ruihai Logistics were not only one of China’s worst accidents but the deadliest ever for first responders, with 115 police and firefighters among the dead and missing.

The investigation has focused on how the warehouse gained permission to handle sodium cyanide and other dangerous chemicals despite being located inside a legally-mandated 1,000meter (1,000-yard) buffer zone from homes and roads. The investigation has also found that the warehouse was storing more

chemicals than it was equipped to handle and had kept some in a loading zone rather than storing them securely.

The responsible parties “failed to take strong measures in response to the Ruihai company’s illegal and unregulated actions, did not assiduously carry out their duties and issued business permits in violations of rules,” the prosecutor’s notice said.

Police have already detained 12 Ruihai employees as part of their investigation and are also looking into a company suspected of providing bogus safety assessments. (ap)

LISBON, Portugal — Portugal’s National Election Commission says 21 parties, some in coalitions, will field candidates in a general election on Oct. 4.

The commission said late Wednesday that only 14 parties will run in all 22 electoral districts. The Social Democratic Party and the Popular Party — which formed Portugal’s center-right coalition government for

the past four years — are standing together. Their main rival is the centerleft Socialist Party. Between them, the three main parties are expected to collect more than 70 percent of the vote, similar to previous elections.

All the main parties say they will abide by the fiscal discipline required by being in the 19-nation eurozone, although the Socialists have promised to ease some austerity measures. (ap)

NEW YORK — Researchers have linked a sophisticated hacking scheme targeting Iranian dissidents back to Iran. A report released Thursday by the Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs describes how the hackers used text message and phone-based phishing to try to get around the security of Google’s Gmail and access the accounts of their targets.

The attacks studied by the Citizen Lab were very similar to others connected to Iranian hackers, the report says. According to the report, some of the attacks began when the targets received text messages that appeared to be from Google saying that there had been an unauthorized attempt to access their Gmail accounts.

The hackers would then follow up with a carefully crafted email notification containing personal details and stating that the login attempt had been from “The Iran,” boosting the fears of people already worried about Iranian hackers.

The emails contained links directing the target to a page where they could reset their password. But in fact, the links were to phishing sites designed to collect the target’s password.

The hackers would then, in real time, use the password to login to the user’s account and trigger the sending of an identification code to the target.

Gmail uses the code as a form of two-factor authentication, which adds

a second layer of security on top of a person’s password. The hackers would then wait for the target to enter the code, collect it through the fraudulent website, and then use it to take control of the account.

In other cases, the targets were contacted by phone by a person speaking English or Farsi, the predominate language in Iran, who would make a “proposal” related to the target’s business activities. The fake proposal, usually promising thousands of dollars, would then be sent to the target’s Gmail in the form of an email containing a fake Google Drive link.

When the target clicked on the drive, they would be prompted to login with the Google credentials and ultimately the two-factor identification code, just like in the cases of the text messages.

While attempts to circumvent two-factor authentication security are nothing new when it comes to financial fraud-related hackings, the practice is fairly new to politically motivated attacks.

“It may be that, as a growing number of potential targets have begun using two-factor authentication on their email accounts out of a concern for their security, politically motivated attackers are borrowing from a playbook that financial criminals have written over the past decade,” the report reads. INDONESIA BI forecasts moderate economic growth in 2015

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s central bank, Bank Indonesia (BI), has forecast a moderate economic growth at around 4.9 percent for Indonesia in 2015.

BI Governor Agus Martowardojo on Thursday expressed optimism that the domestic economy would grow better in the second semester compared to the previous semester, which witnessed a slowdown.

“Thus, the economic growth is expected to be between 4.7 and 5.1 percent, or around 4.9 percent,” the minister stated.

The government is currently facing a huge global economic challenge. The global economic growth is forecast at 3.3 percent, lower than the realized growth of 3.4 percent in 2014.

It indicates that the global economic development is not encouraging enough, he noted.

“Despite some improvement in advanced countries such as the United States, we need to focus on China, which had enjoyed a growth of over 10 percent in the past 20 years, and has dropped to 7.4 percent. Its economy is projected to grow at 6.8 percent in 2015. China is a major economy, so when it experiences a decline in economic growth, there are some impacts,” he remarked.

Other developing countries such as Brazil, Turkey, India, and South Africa, which have so far developed encouragingly, have also been affected by the global economic slowdown and the sentiment of the interest rate surge by the Fed, he pointed out.

The minister explained that the domestic economic slowdown in the first semester was due to the slow absorption of the state budget.

The central bank will always respond by issuing prudent and consistent policies in order to control inflation, he added.

WASHINGTON - The International Monetary Fund managing director, Christine Lagarde, heads to Indonesia next week for talks with senior officials and a highlevel Asian finance conference, the IMF said Wednesday.

During her September 1-2 visit, Lagarde will meet with President Joko Widodo and other senior officials, including Bank Indonesia Governor Agus Martowardojo.

The visit “presents an opportunity to exchange views on recent economic developments, Indonesia’s prospects, and its role as an emerging power both in the region and globally,” the Washingtonbased crisis lender said in a statement.

Lagarde’s visit comes at a time

of heightened volatility in Asian financial markets, largely due to China’s economic slowdown and markets turmoil, as well as falling commodity prices that have hammered Indonesia and other emerging-market economies and their currencies.

BUSINESS US economy likely grew more in spring than first estimated

WASHINGTON — The U.S. economy likely gained more momentum in the spring than the government previously estimated. The question now is whether shrunken global stock markets and a sharp slowdown in China will weaken the economy in coming months.

The Commerce Department on Thursday will update its estimate of the economy’s growth, as measured by the gross domestic product, for the April-June quarter.

A month ago, the government calculated that the economy grew at a 2.3 percent annual rate last quarter. That figure marked a rebound from the January-March quarter, when growth slowed to an anemic 0.6 percent rate, mainly because of a severe winter and other temporary factors.

Economists surveyed by data firm FactSet have forecast that

the government will now estimate that the economy expanded at a stronger 3 percent annual rate last quarter.

About half the increased growth is expected to have come from greater stockpiling of supplies than the government had initially estimated. But that buildup of inventory is expected to mean slower growth in the current July-September quarter. Analysts had originally expected annualized growth in the second half of the year to top 3 percent. Now, many think growth this summer reached a slower annual

rate of around 2.8 percent.

Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics, has predicted that after a quarter of working down unwanted inventories, the economy will accelerate to a 3.5 percent annual rate in the October-December period. But that forecast is based on the expectation that the stock market’s slide will stabilize before it damages consumer and business confidence.

“My forecast rests on the assumption that this is a garden variety market correction, with stock prices dropping by 10 percent from their recent high,” Zandi said. “If we get a bigger decline of 20 percent, then that will hurt consumption and housing, and we will not get the job growth we are expecting.”

A decline in stock prices of 10 percent is generally considered a market correction, while a fall of 20 percent is viewed as the start of a bear market.

On Wednesday, stocks rallied to recoup some of the huge losses incurred in the previous sessions.

The Dow Jones industrial average jumped 619 points, its biggest one-day gain in seven years. That snapped a six-day losing streak in which the Dow tumbled about 1,900 points, a plunge that wiped out more than $2 trillion in corporate value.

Analysts cautioned that there could be more turbulence ahead, in part because of unsettled conditions in China. Beijing has devalued its currency and taken other steps to address a major slowdown in

its economy, the world’s secondlargest.

Wall Street took some comfort Wednesday from comments by William Dudley, president of the New York Federal Reserve Bank. Dudley told reporters that the case for a Fed rate hike in September is “less compelling to me than it was a few weeks ago,” given China’s troubles, falling oil prices and weakness in emerging markets.

Before the recent turmoil, many economists had thought that signs of an improving U.S. economy would lead the Fed to begin raising its key short-term rate, which it’s kept at a record low near zero since late 2008. Now, many think the Fed will postpone its first rate hike until December or perhaps even later. (ap)

China sets yuan rate at four-year low against dollar

SHANGHAI - China’s central bank on Thursday set its central rate for the yuan currency at a fouryear low against the US dollar, a move analysts said reflected reduced expectations for the unit following a devaluation.

The yuan was fixed at 6.4085 to the greenback, according to the China Foreign Exchange Trade System, just 0.07 percent weaker from the previous day. But it was the lowest since August 2011, the Shanghai Securities News said on its website.

The move follows an interest rate cut announced on Tuesday and a slumping stock market, which has fallen more than 40 percent since peaking in midJune.

“The yuan depreciated as growing market expectations for yuan depreciation have been gradually fulfilled after the one-off devaluation on August 11,” Liu Dongliang, a senior analyst at China Merchants Bank in Shenzhen, told AFP. The central bank on August 11 devalued the yuan by nearly two percent, saying the decision was aimed at moving towards a more flexible exchange rate though the market interpreted it as a sign of economic weakness. It fell further in the following days.

The yuan is restricted to trading up or down two percent from the daily rate on the national foreign exchange market.

Before the August 11 change, the central bank used to decide its daily yuan reference rate by polling market-makers, but now says it takes into consideration the previous day’s close, foreign exchange supply and demand and the rates of major currencies.

by Gong Kebyar Karya Budaya from Tegal Badeng Barat. In the performance during 2.5 hours, both gong kebyar troupes are required to present gamelan music composition, creation composition, gamelan music with creation dance and gamelan music of traditional games. Before the jury panel consisting of Made Yudarta, Made Kartawan and A.A. Ayu Kayun Hartatih (all from the ISI) as well as Ida Bagus Sulinggih from Jembrana Education Agency, each participant delivers its best performance.

Gong Kebyar Karya Budaya from Negara subdistrict getting the first chance came with Pepanggulan Tabuh Telu creation and Jaran Badeng. Uniquely, this Jaran Badeng composition is inspired by the story of their ancestors related to the origins of the Tegal Badeng village. It is said that the village name comes from the attack of wild horses that destroyed the village.

As a response, the village ruler assigned its troops dressed in black by forming very strong troops. Due to raging horses, the area originally named Tegal Gegesan was then changed into blackening and due to this incident the village was then renamed into Tegal Badeng. Until now the name is still used for the village.

In the meantime, Gong Kebyar Gita Kumara, the envoy of Negara subdistrict, is also trying to appear maximally by presenting gamelan music composition with ngericik and ngerocok creation and metukup- tukupan traditional games. The games tell about a group of children that were playing traditional hide-and-seek games currently replaced by modern games and TV shows.

According to the committee doubling as jury of the competition, Ida Bagus Sulinggih, the competition of gong kebyar this time is not only to find out new generation of the art, but also the winners that will be projected to participate in the Bali Arts Festival next year. (kmb26)

The market activity of Mengwi Art Market is done outside the market due to the unready building

MANGUPURA - The desire to accommodate people having profession to sell handicraft products in Badung by establishing a Mengwi customary village art market cannot be realized so far. Moreover, the building located at the entrance into Taman Ayun, Mengwi, is unclear when to be in operation.

More sadly, the building posing the assistance of Bali provincial government is now filled with plastic waste scattered in every corner of the building. This building draws the attention of passing people, including foreign and domestic travelers that are coming to and leaving the Taman Ayun.

The head of Mengwi subdistrict, IGN Gede Jaya Saputra, justified the matter. Previously, the market was planned to be operated by the authority of Mengwi customary village, but because there are a number of repairs, the operation of the three-year-old market is also postponed. “Indeed the building in the west side is still being repaired first and it is handled by the authority of customary village,” he said.

Deputy Chief of Bali Police, Nyoman Suryasta, revealed that Karangasem is predicted to be the most vulnerable to potential conflict. Bali Police will therefore be deploying a mobile brigade and riot squad to Karangasem.

“Based on the results of our monitoring and coordinations with the Electoral Commission, the political dynamics in Karangasem rare contentious. For this reason, we are placing more attention on security in this region,” said Deputy Chief of Bali Police after the assembly of the Praja Agung operations forces 2015 at Puputan Margarana Square, Renon, Denpasar, on Wednesday (Aug. 26).

To make sure that the implementation of local leader election runs smoothly, the national police, Indonesian military, local government, Electoral Commission, Electoral Supervisory Board, Electoral Supervisory Commission, other law enforcement agencies as well as all members of society, must work synergistically.

“Synergy amongst all stakeholders must be present so as to manage any problems that arise, so that they do not develop or become widespread and create contingency situations that could impede the

course of the local leader election,” said Suryasta.

For ensuring security at polling stations, security officers are truly ready for the tasks and are prepared to maintain neutrality. In addition, Suryasta has ordered his personnel in the field, to increase awareness about the potential threat of terrorism that could take advantage of the moment in the local leader election 2015.

“I want to remind everyone that the main indicators of the success of this year’s local leader election will largely be determined by the professionalism and neutrality each and everyone of the electoral organizers, and the support of the community in creating a safe and successful local leader election,” he concluded. The suspect, 41-year-old Vester Flanagan, shot himself as police pursued him on a Virginia highway hours after the shooting. Flanagan, who was African-American, died later at a hospital, police said.

The journalists who were killed were reporter Alison Parker, 24, and cameraman Adam Ward, 27.

Both journalists were white, as is a woman who they were interviewing. The woman was wounded and was in stable condition, a hospital spokesman said.

Social media postings by a person who appeared to be Flanagan indicated the suspect had grievances against the station, CBS affiliate WDBJ7 in Roanoke, Virginia, which let him go two years ago.

The person also posted video that appeared to show the attack filmed from the gunman’s vantage point.

Flanagan sent ABC News a 23page fax about two hours after the shooting, saying his attack was triggered by the June 17 mass shooting at a black church in Charleston, South Carolina, the network said.

Nine people were killed, and a white man has been charged in that rampage.

The network cited Flanagan as saying he had suffered racial discrimination, sexual harassment and bullying at work. He had been attacked by black men and white women, and for being a gay black man, he said. “The church shooting was the tipping point ... but my anger has been building steadily,”

ABC News cited the fax as saying.

“I’ve been a human powder keg for a while ... just waiting to go BOOM!” The on-air shooting occurred at about 6:45 a.m. EDT (1045 GMT) at Bridgewater Plaza, a Smith Mountain Lake recreation site about 200 miles (320 km) southwest of Washington.

The broadcast was abruptly interrupted by the sound of gunshots as Parker and the woman being interviewed, Vicki Gardner, executive director of the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce, screamed and ducked for cover. Hours after the shooting, someone claiming to have filmed it posted video online. The videos were posted to a Twitter account and on Facebook by a man identifying himself as Bryce Williams, which was Flanagan’s on-air name.

The videos were removed shortly afterward. In one video, a handgun was clearly visible as the person filming approached the female reporter. The person purporting to be Williams also posted, “I filmed the shooting see Facebook” as well as saying one of the victims had “made racist comments.”

In the fax to ABC News, Flanagan praised shooters who had carried out mass killings at Virginia Tech University in 2007 and at Colorado’s Columbine High School in 1999.

ABC News said Flanagan called the network shortly after 10 a.m.

Police arrested Wong and other key leaders, which drove more people into the streets. Wong posted photos of his police charge sheets on his Facebook account. He is scheduled to appear in a magistrate’s court on Sept. 2.

Two other student leaders, Alex Chow and Nathan Law, also face

charges relating to illegal assembly over the same incident, according to local media reports. Chow is the former secretary general of the Hong Kong Federation of Students, which also played a major role in the protests. Law is the current leader.

Wong, 18, is also expected to appear in court on Friday to face two other charges of obstructing police at a separate, earlier protest in which he and others burned a cardboard copy of a Beijing policy document that asserted full authority over Hong Kong, a former British colony promised a high degree of control over its own affairs until 2047. Political parties fail to shape young cadres DENPASAR - Numerous of regions in Indonesia are scheduled to hold simultaneous local leader elections on December 9, 2015. In Bali alone, five counties; Badung, Bangli, Karangasem, Tabanan, Jembrana as well as the municipality of Denpasar will hold democratic celebrations on the same day.

Of the five elections, Denpasar is the only one threatened to be postponed based on the fact that there is only one pair of qualifying candidates. The Denpasar Electoral Commission has therefor re-opened registration for candidates. If there are still no candidate, Denpasar’s election will be postponed until 2017 (if there is no government regulation in lieu of law). In a discussion entitled “The Phenomenon of Simultaneous Local Leader Election’ that was held on Wednesday (Aug. 26), the Denpasar matter was addressed.

The lack of electoral candidates, is considered by many, as a failure on the part of political parties to adequately prepare cadres who might be abel to fight for election.

A legislator from Bali’s House of representives, A.A. Ngurah Adhi Ardhana, said that local leader elec-

tion are actually a celebration that should be enjoyed by people and that it would not be very elegant to have to delay such an event.

He added that the excitement of the People should be supported by all participants of the celebration, in this case political parties in particular.

According to Ardhana, it is odd that a political party would not want to be in power. “This is an anomaly.

If even with a large voting capital -especially if they coalesce, they still do not dare to propose a candidate, what is going on?” he asked.

Ardhana sees two factors that have led to the present electoral conditions of Denpasar. The first factor has something to do with regulations that apparently allow people to take advantage of the rules to manipulate things in their favour. The second factor is related

to the political parties themselves who have not instilled a sense of wanting to struggle in their younger cadres.

“What is wrong with this election? Why are they not participating? I cannot begin to imagine what is going on in the minds of political parties that has made them not want to nominate any candidates in this election. Is it based on surveys that have made them afraid to fail and so they dare not even try? Actually, surveys only indicate the popularity of politicians before they become a candidate. Once someone is nominated as a candidate, only then is their likelihood of being elected measured. All pairs of candidates start from zero and have six months to improve their odds of being elected. I find his situation very odd,” he said in a puzzled tone.

Ardhana, also said that he finds

it ridiculous if parties are in fact deliberately trying to delay the election until 2017 with the hopes that the popularity of incumbent candidates will become eroded over time and he worries that this phenomena could insight a sort of vendetta where elections would continuously be delayed.

“If this happens, would the politicians not feel ashamed? In the case of Denpasar, I think that candidates that did register were not not illegible, and if fact did not want to qualify. If they do not want to qualify, what does that means?” he said rhetorically.

Former member of the Denpasar Electoral Commission, IGA Diah Yuniti, is also deeply saddened to see that Denpasar “lacks” candidates for this election. What is presently occurring in regards to Denpasar’s election is a case that has never even been considered by legislators (of the laws on elections—Ed). STOCKHOLM - Hennes & Mauritz, the world’s second-biggest fashion retailer, is launching a new effort to promote recycling as it seeks to cut its environmental impact, boost its ethical credentials and address looming shortages of raw materials.

The move comes as critics point out the damage being caused by a throwaway culture fuelled by cheap clothing that has seen a sharp rise in the number of garments sold annually around the world.

Sweden’s H&M, which is launching a line of jeans containing recycled cotton next week, will offer an annual 1-million-euro ($1.16 million) prize for new techniques to recycle clothes, Chief Executive Karl-Johan Persson told Reuters.

“No company, fast-fashion or not, can continue exactly like today,” Persson said. “The (prize’s) largest potential lies with finding new technology that means we can recycle the fibres with unchanged quality.”

Existing cotton recycling methods make poor-quality fibres, and there is no efficient way to recycle garments of mixed materials, so the vast majority of clothes end up in land fill.

Johan Rockstrom, environmental science professor at Stockholm University and a jury member for the H&M prize, said the fashion industry needs to find new business models to respond to global resource shortages.

“This is a great challenge for H&M whose trademark is cheap clothes at good quality ... The fact it’s cheap means there’s a risk people buy and throw away, or buy too much,” he said.

H&M revenues have more than doubled since 2006, reaching 151 billion Swedish crowns ($18.3 billion) in the year to last November,

making it the second biggest fashion retailer after Spain’s Inditex.

The award is being launched by a foundation established by H&M that is funded by the retailer and the Persson family, its main owners.

Bernstein analyst Anne-Charlotte Windal said the industry’s sustainability drive reflected the dilemma facing “fast-fashion” companies that constantly churn out new styles.

“The model only works if they encourage very frequent purchases, but the consumers are aware of the increasing effect it has on the environment,” she said.

Other companies are coming up with their own solutions.

Mud Jeans is a Dutch company which leases its garments to consumers and then offers them a replacement each year, repairing and reselling the used ones or recycling

the fabric.

“This is the future: producers that are responsible for their own waste,” said Chief Executive Bert van Son. “Our company can do this because we are quite small: that it is why we can do these kinds of crazy things because we can keep cotton pure. If you are a big store chain it is very complicated if you mix cotton and polyester.”

H&M joined forces earlier this year with Puma-owner Kering to support start-up Worn Again which is developing a technology for separating and extracting fibres in mixed-material garments.

Meanwhile, a company called Re:newcell is developing a method to improve the quality of recycled cotton fibres and hopes to build a first factory in coming years.

Currently, only about a maximum of 20 percent of recycled cotton can be used in a new pair of jeans because the fibre length is shortened in the shredding process, impacting quality, H&M says.

H&M and Kering are not alone in beating the recycling drum.

Like H&M, Britain’s Marks & Spencer and Italy’s Calzedonia collects used items in their stores for recycling.

On a much smaller scale, Finnish entrepreneurs Pure Waste Textiles have managed to produce sweat shirts from 100 percent recycled cotton after improving existing recycling techniques and by recycling offcuts from clothes factories.

However, others believe that recycling is just a distraction from the real challenge of the fashion industry: persuading customers to keep wearing their clothes for longer.

To that end, British designer Tom Cridland is offering a 30-year guarantee on a range of T-shirts.

“I don’t believe it is fair on customers to churn out plain white T-shirts that will only last a year or two,” he said. “I can’t compete on price so I have to do something different.” (rtr)

Both those buying the land as well as those selling land are subject to criminal charges if the money used to buy the land is from the proceeds of corruption or illegal activities,” he concluded. Balinese Temple Ceremony

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

LOS ANGELES — When Robert Redford first acquired the film rights to Bill Bryson’s memoir “A Walk in the Woods,” he knew exactly who he wanted to play his Appalachian Trail hiking comrade: Paul Newman.

Not only were the two men responsible for some of cinema’s most iconic duos — they were lifetime friends as well.

But the 11-year age difference was starting to become a problem.

Newman, whose health was in decline, was afraid he wouldn’t be up for the physical challenges of the role. When Newman died in 2008, the project nearly died, too.

And then The Sundance Kid met Nick Nolte.

However strange it might sound for two contemporaries with longrunning careers, Nolte and Redford didn’t actually know one another.

“I liked him as an actor. You could see that he had an undisciplined side in life,” said Redford.
