PARIS - Rihanna met French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday to discuss the pop star’s charity activities in healthcare and education.

The Barbadian singer of hit “Diamonds” founded the Clara Lionel Foundation in 2012, a nonprofit organisation that promotes scholarship projects across the globe.

“We focused on the topic of education from global aspects, and we will make a very big announcement this coming September,” Rihanna told journalists outside the Elysee

palace in Paris after the meeting, without elaborating.

Rihanna’s Twitter account has more than 75 million followers, and she has recently used it to approach other global leaders such as Canada’s Justin Trudeau and Argentina’s Mauricio Macri on education issues. (rtr)

LOS ANGELES - Angelina Jolie has put moviemaking on hold to become a better mom, take cooking classes and do ordinary tasks like picking up dog poop.

In an interview with Vanity Fair released on Wednesday, the actress said life after splitting in September from husband Brad Pitt was focused on looking after her health and her children.

“I actually feel more of a woman because I feel like I’m being smart about my choices, and I’m putting my family first, and I’m in charge of my life and my health. I think that’s what makes a woman complete,” Jolie said.

Her latest film as a director, “First They Killed My Father,” about the Khmer Rouge regime in the 1970s, under which more than 1 million people died, had its premiere in Cambodia in February.

It is due to be released globally and on Netflix in September.

Apart from promoting the film, Jolie said she had no interest in working on another movie right now.

She has primary custody of her six children with Pitt pending a final settlement of their divorce.

“I’m just wanting to make the proper breakfast and keep the house,” she told Vanity Fair.

“That’s my passion. At the request of my kids, I’m taking cooking classes. As I go to sleep at night, I think, ‘Did I do a great job as a mom or was that an average day?’”

“I’ve been trying for nine months to be really good at just being a homemaker and picking up dog poop and cleaning dishes and reading bedtime stories,” she said. “And I’m getting better at all three.”

Jolie, 42, a special envoy for the United Nations refugee agency, said the children had been “very brave” since the split from Pitt.

“They’re six very strong-minded, thoughtful, worldly individuals. I’m very proud of them.

They’ve been very brave. They were very brave,” she said.

Jolie revealed that she had developed hypertension, and Bell’s Palsy - a weakness in facial muscles that can cause one side of the face to droop slightly - since the separation from Pitt, but had recovered thanks to acupuncture. (rtr)

UK’s Prince William steps down from ambulance job to become full-time royal

“Following on from my time in the military, I have had experiences in this job I will carry with me for the rest of my life, and that will add a valuable perspective to my royal work for decades to come,” he said in January.

William served in Britain’s armed forces from 2006 until 2013, and worked latterly as a search and rescue helicopter pilot.

BTR movement cannot be ridden by political interest

DENPASAR - Lately, ahead of the political event in Bali, a number of political elites begin to profit through the issues on rejection against Benoa Bay reclamation plan. To show off that Bali Rejects Reclamation (BTR) movement will not die, on Wednesday (Jul. 26) ForBALI together with the movement of ‘pasubayan or agreement of Bali customary village rejecting Benoa Bay reclamation’ held again a peaceful action.

Located in front of the office of the governor of Bali, this peaceful action showed off that the BTR movement will not be ridden by any political interests including the election of regional leaders.

ForBALI General Coordinator, Wayan Gendo Suardana, said the action is meant to show off the existence that resistance continues to survive, although it has not come down because to take a breath. In addition, Gendo conveyed that the action is also meant to show off people’s movement that is not easily pulled to the left or right for the interests of pragmatic nature. He has long reminded of the entire ranks because the BTR issue will surely be used for their political interests and pragmatic interests to raise electability and popularity.

Moreover, they will not hesitate to be ignorant and claim to reject the reclamation whereas all this time they just keep silent and tend to ignore the people’s movement.

“This also proves that when politicians use BTR as their political issue, this certainly shows the BTR is a very important issue. They understand, the public reason says, the reclamation of Benoa Bay is a bad project. Therefore, they have no option but take this issue to draw people’s vote,” he said.

According to Gendo, such an action is also an at-

tempt to remind if the movement should not be lulled by elite maneuvers, as well as strengthen their confidence that the movement is on the right line, so that politicians are forced to feature this issue.

In the meantime, Coordinator of the agreement of customary village rejecting Benoa Bay reclamation, Wayan Swarsa, revealed the same opinion that the movement is an insistence from the bottom. Actually, the BTR movement does not keep silence. There are still activities at some places indicating that this movement is not dormant. Moreover, when talking about customary matters, there is no limit saying it does not work anymore as long as it is the decision of customary village. “Indeed, this is an appropriate moment to start again because all this time it is deliberately meant to save energy. Obviously, the vivacity does not diminish a little bit,” he concluded.

Swarsa asserted that the latest action is meant to consolidate the organization that the rejecting reclamation movement is never taken advantage by any political contents. Moreover today, many parties claim as if they were in the movement of rejecting reclamation with political goals. “We want to clarify that this is a pure movement, a moral movement in the name of morality to preserve, without political interest or even without deals with any party,” he said.

“From the beginning, the pasubayan concept is a moral bond to the motherland. Whoever the candidate that will become real candidates should be able to fight with us, why not. If this time they only express political jargon, we can also be more vigilant,” he concluded.

Swarsa reiterated that BTR movement has not been completed yet. When talking about the pasubayan, until these minutes it does not lead to any gubernatorial candidates because indeed from the beginning the formation is not intended for that. (kmb23)

Culture agency reminds of not restoring carelessly

MANGUPURA - Badung culture agency commences to worry about the rampant temple restoration projects in the region. So far, not a little temples belonging to cultural heritage are in need of preservations. On that account, the Head of the Badung Culture Agency, Ida Bagus Anom Bhasma, reminded the community of Badung of not doing restorations carelessly, especially in the midst of the high number of financial assistance disbursed by local government.

“It (restoration—Ed) is not forbidden. If possible, the temple belonging to historical heritage should be consulted first,” said Anom Bhasma, not long ago. He acknowledged that many requests for the repair of religious facilities from the community like temple restoration or improvement. He said his agency has owned the experts from the archaeological institute, preservation of cultural heritage, and so forth. The experts serve as the agent of consultation prior to the repair. “Do not let all the buildings be dismantled just because the regent gives a lot of funds,” he said.

This official from Taman village, Abiansemal, appealed to people that temples associated with historical relics, if damaged, simply repair pursuant to the original style. “If rebuilt, try to make it like the Taman Ayun, for example. As in Blahkiuh, there is also a temple repair. I asked to photograph it first and then be installed again. Sada Temple also used to be broken due to earthquake.

DENPASAR - Cyber unit team of Bali police’s directorate of special criminal investigation arrested the owner of Donald Bali account with the initials DIS, 39, near Tabanan police on Friday (Jul. 21). It happened because this restaurant chef in Kuta uploaded 12 videos on YouTube containing hatred and blasphemous utterances.

Chief of Sub-directorate II of Bali Police’s Directorate of Special Criminal Investigation, Nyoman Resa, accompanied by Chief of Cyber Crime Unit, I Wayan Wisnawa Adiputra, said on Wednesday (Jul. 26) the suspect DIS from Jember, East Java, has committed a crime and without the right to disseminate information resulting in the feeling of hatred on ethnic, religion, race and intergroup (SARA). He created and uploaded 12 videos on YouTube social media with the account name of Donald Bali.

Related to the case disclosure, this former chief of Kuta police confirmed that initially there was information from the national police headquarters related to the videos. After that, Wisnawa with

his team and criminal investigation unit of Tabanan police conducted an investigation to collect evidence.

“From the investigation, he obtained the facts that it is true that DIS is the actor and creator of the videos. The videos were uploaded by using hand phone belonging to the suspect. The videos kindled many comments from netizens leading to a conflict,” he said.

The suspect, said Resa, reasoned that he just wanted to express his ideas and criticism. “For example, in the videos the perpetrator questions whether the people asking others to commit suicidal bomb have ever gone to heaven? It is said the suicide could arguably go to heaven,” said the officer.

The suspect started making and uploading the videos from 2017 until the time he was arrested. “We are encouraging people to take advantage of social media for positive things or goodness. Wherever used for negative things, they will be dealt with law enforcement officials,” said Resa. (kmb36)

Humble sack turns into Ivory Coast fashion accessory

ABIDJAN - An entrepreneur from Ivory Coast is hoping to score an international fashion hit by recycling the cloth sacks that the country uses to ship cocoa beans around the world.

Liliane Estievenart, 45, hit on the idea of turning the sacks into attractive bags with the stencilled slogan “Produce of Cote d’Ivoire - Cocoa” - a reminder that the West African country is the world’s top producer of the commodity.

Estievenart created her first bag at the request of a clothing manufacturer, and has since gone on to design a range of purses, leathertrimmed valises and other accessories using jute, the material used in the cocoa bags.

In the nine months since she left her old job as a sales associate, she says she has sold at least 600 of the bags as far afield as Gabon, Mauritius, Togo and Ghana. She also has plans to expand.

“There is a high demand

by Ivorians, our brothers in the diaspora”, she said. “I hope one day we distribute everywhere throughout the world.” (rtr)

DENPASAR — The difficulty to dam up drug smuggling also occurs in Indonesia. The international illegal drug trafficking is a commonplace today, and the drug smuggling into Indonesia is committed by mafia taking advantage of seaports and airports. On that account, the authority and the users of transportation services shall participate in the Prevention, Eradication, Abuse and Trafficking of Drugs (P4GN).

This was conveyed by Chief of Bali Police, Dr. Petrus Reinhard Golose, when receiving the visit of the Head of Customs Office for Bali, NTB and NTT Region, Syarif Hidayat, at the Bali police headquarters, Denpasar, on Wednesday (Jul. 26).

The meeting is meant to build cooperation and collaboration between the Bali police and customs in the field of interdiction, especially the airport interdiction, in order to cut the trafficking of the illicit goods.

He asked the customs to more strictly supervise and check every person and goods coming in through the Ngurah Rai Airport, Tuban. If the X-ray examination found any drugs, it is expected to be developed by carrying out delivery controls to reveal the big dealers.

“The drugs coming through Ngurah Rai Airport involve many countries. Definitely it has a large

syndicate. To reveal it, the Bali police as well as the customs and immigration office can make cooperation by establishing Airport Interdiction Taskforce. The personnel are taken from outside the CTOC taskforce,” said police chief.

All parties are expected to work together and not to accentuate to individual institutions. This is based on the existing law and police have no authority at the airport.

“This interdiction is not just a drug problem, but also regarding other hazardous goods such as explosives. However, today we focus more on drugs as being prominent in Bali,” said this graduate of Police Academy of 1988 batch.

In the meantime, Syarif Hidayat conveyed that his office has been doing intensive cooperation with the Bali police’s directorate of special criminal investigation and directorate of drug investigation.

“We are ready to increase the cooperation with airport interdiction whose personnel will consist of special and optional personnel,” he added.

Syarif claimed that lately drug offenders entering the airport are very minimal. Probably, it is inseparable from the possibility of the changes in their smuggling pattern by sea such as the disclosure of a ton of crystal meth from China. (kmb36)

Stella Maxwell sang with Lady Gaga as she was getting ready for the 2016 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Gaga was one of the performers at the annual lingerie spectacle in November and was joined on the bill by Bruno Mars and The Weeknd.

While the Angels were getting ready, the popstar popped backstage to get them all fired up for the show ahead.”(Last year) Lady Gaga came backstage when we were still getting ready and getting our make-up done. And I think I was with (make-up artist) Tom Pecheux, getting my eyeliner finished, and she came backstage and started singing her new song, that we were going to walk to,” Stella recalled to Vogue Australia. “(We were) singing in our pink robes ... and everyone was so happy and singing along. And (Lady Gaga) was hugging us all and it was like a really nice experience.”

The water pump is the property of the Bali-Penida River Agency (BWS) installed to drain water from reservoir to the pipeline leading to residents’ home.

Unfortunately, though having been reported, the water pump machine has not been repaired. As a result, they have to collect rainwater and some purchase mineral water for drinking and cooking.

A local resident, Wayan Pasek, said on Wednesday (Jul. 26) the clean water supply at his village do not experience any problems after the BWS operated the water pump. With the pump, people can get a supply of clean water properly so the difficulty to get water in dry season has been overcome.

Unfortunately, since the past five months, the difficulty to get clean water supply is back to the time before the presence of water pump. People must use rainwater for bathing, washing and toilet (MCK).

Sometimes, the rainwater is also cooked for drinking and cooking. Disruption of this water supply happens because the pump is out of order. “For the time being, we use rainwater because we are still waiting for the repair of the water pump installed by the BWS,” he said.

Headman of Tembok, Tejakula subdistrict, Dewa Komang Yudi Astra, said that since the residents have difficulty to get clean water the village government has been trying to find a way out so that it can be handled as soon as possible. Village government has

reported the pump damage to the BWS as the property owner installed at the village’s reservoir. In addition to reporting, it also had the pump machine immediately repaired, so the water crisis at the village will not last long. However, until now the request has not been acted upon by the BWS. The damage to the pump machine is not repaired because it is still looking for the components.

The component cannot be purchased instantly, so the BWS must purchase it by indent system. “The last information told that to look for the components cannot be done instantly, but must place an order first.

Hopefully, the pump machine in use is easy to find the components, so when getting damage should not long wait like the current condition where residents have not got water for three months,” he said.

Water tank

The clean water crisis experienced by the community of Sembung hamlet, Tembok, is taken seriously by the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of Buleleng. After receiving reports from the village, last Wednesday the BPBD already supplied clean water by using tank truck.

Chief Executive of the BPBD Buleleng, Made Subur, said that every day it supplies 20,000 liters of clean water. Such water is expected to lighten the burden of residents to get clean water supply. His agency promised to provide clean water for Tembok village until the BWS repairs the damaged water pump.

“Having made coordination with the village authorities, we will supply clean water every day until the water pump works. Thus, residents will no longer be difficult to get water for toilet and cooking needs,” he explained. (kmb38)

NEGARA - The corpse of Mr. X was found floating in the waters of Medewi, Pekutatan, on Wednesday afternoon (Jul. 26). It was found floating in the middle of the sea by a fisherman named Serahadi, 30, from Pesinggahan hamlet, Medewi.

As the information obtained, on Tuesday midnight (Jul. 25) Serahadi was sailing to the waters of Tabanan. Later, the witness began to catch fish and put up his net. On Wednesday morning (Jul. 26) around 08:30, the witness began to pick up the nets installed. Since getting no fish catch, the witness immediately pulled the net and rushed to go home.

At 9:30 when on the way home, the witness Serahadi saw something floating like balloon in the waters of the sea. After being approached, in fact it was a male corpse floating in the sea surrounded by birds.

The witness then tied the corpse with a net strap and dragged it to be brought ashore. After calling the fisherman group leader, Misrawan, on his command the witness was picked up by his four friends to the middle of the sea. Around the Pekutatan waters, the corpse was taken onto a boat by four people namely Lukman, Gunawan, Abdul Rasid and Sanuri. At 15:30, the corpse was evacuated to mainland at Medewi fish landing base (TPI).

After that, a health team from Pekutatan, Made Ardika Adiguna, conducted a checkup. The corpse of Mr. X has the height of 180 cm (in floating condition), crushed condition on the face, bruises at upper part of the left and right hips and chest, reddish fluid getting out of the ears, missing flesh on right thigh and right lower leg measuring about 20 cm around right thigh.

Mr. X’s corpse was wearing a black necklace and a light-blue, long-sleeved surfing suit with the wording ‘Harry Surf’ as well as blue-and-white navy pants. Mr. X’s corpse was subsequently taken to Negara Hospital by an ambulance of Pekutatan health center.

From the results of identification, the corpse originally identified as Mr. X was named Serhii Haveliev, a Ukrainian nationality, with the passport number FA492689. The victim was alleged to drown while surfing.

Chief of Jembrana Police Criminal Investigation Unit, Yusak A Sooai, with permission from Jembrana police chief confirmed the discovery of the corpse. Now, the corpse is still in Negara Hospital while waiting for the family or parties that will take care of the corpse. (kmb)

Hamlet chief of Legian Kaja, Wayan Riasa, confirmed on Tuesday (Jul. 25) about the complaint.

He did not deny if the crowdedness has indeed happened since long time ago. The congestion happening almost every time seems to have caused residents living around the area to get isolated. When just coming out of the house, they encounter traffic jam. Moreover, when coming home from workplace, people need a long time to get home.

“If the traffic jam occurs after office hours, it remains understandable. However, this almost happens every hour, we cannot predict when it happens. In the past, it could still be anticipated because it happened at certain hours,” he concluded.

He disclosed this issue was actually discussed in the hamlet meeting. Results of the meeting with some inputs have also been expressed in a letter having been submitted by local headman. However, until now it is not clear how the follow-up is.

He said the Badung transportation agency had time to come down to location and conduct a survey on traffic conditions.

However, until now there has been no clarity about the result of the survey whether there will be traffic engineering or traffic settings.

“Obviously, the measure to be taken will be able to break down the traffic jam at the road section.

Hopefully, even if there will be a traffic engineering test, it will not affect the traffic having been

smooth,” he hoped.

Chief of the Legian People’s Empowerment Agency (LPM), Ketut Sudana, also conveyed similar opinion. Moreover, according to him, the impact of traffic crowdedness at Double Six intersection also makes hotels complain. It happens because tourists wishing to get out of the hotel to airport are blocked by the jam. “There are even tourists that are forced to rent a motorcycle to break through such crowdedness,” he added.

He admitted to worry if such condition is ignored will have an impact on tourist visits, and the economy of the residents of Legian.

“We expect whatever the solution to overcome the crowdedness will not cause tourists to move from Legian,” he said. (kmb23)

Political crisis grips Sweden as confidence vote looms

STOCKHOLM - A political crisis gripped Sweden on Wednesday after opposition parties called for a no confidence vote they would almost certainly win over a botched outsourcing deal in which sensitive material was transmitted abroad.

The vote, targeting ministers of three departments who failed to raise the alarm over short cuts during implementation of the contract, would undermine the government’s already brittle authority and make fresh elections a distinct possibility.

The minority left-green government said Prime Minister Stefan Lofven would hold a press conference on Thursday at 0800 GMT, without commenting further.

The centre-right opposition is seeking to boot out the infrastructure, defence and interior ministers - respectively Anna Johansson, Peter Hultqvist and Anders Ygeman - for failing to take action during the outsourcing of IT services for the Swedish Transport Agency in 2015.

Lofven admitted on Monday that, as a result of the way the contract was handled, his country and its citizens were exposed to risks by potential leaks of sensitive information.

The government said in 2015 that the contract process - won by

IBM Sweden - was speeded up, bypassing some laws and internal procedures.

IBM Sweden said it never commented on relations with clients.

The centre-right opposition Alliance - comprising the Moderate, Centre, Liberal and Christian Democrat parties - announced earlier on Wednesday it would call the no confidence vote, without specifying when.

“It is obvious the three ministers have neglected their responsibility. They have not taken action to protect Sweden’s safety”, Centre party leader Annie Loof told a news conference.

The legislature is in recess but the opposition parties will submit their motion to the speaker, who will then summon legislators for a vote within 10 days.

Including the nationalist Sweden Democrats, whose leader Jimmie Akesson told Reuters his party would support the motion, the opposition have a majority in parliament, meaning the vote is likely to pass.

BODY BLOW Losing three key ministers would be a further body blow to Lofven’s government, which has already lost votes in parliament.

After the opposition’s budget bill got more support than the government’s in 2014 he called a snap election, which he retracted after a compromise was reached.

“He has shown he can do the unexpected,” said Jonas Hinnfors, political scientist at Gothenburg University, who did not rule out snap elections or the government resigning. “The alternative is to stay on severely wounded, which in itself is very problematic for the government... This is a crisis for the government and the credibility of the prime minister.”

Domestic markets remained unfazed, however, with the crown little changed against the euro.

“The political situation in Sweden generally has a very small effect on both (interest) rates and exchange rates,” said Carl Hammer, economist at SEB. (rtr)

KANDAHAR - Taliban fighters killed 26 soldiers and wounded 13 others in an attack on an army base in the southern province of Kandahar, the defence ministry said on Wednesday, as heavy fighting raged across the country.

Officials said the Taliban had attacked overnight an outpost in Khakriz district, to the north of Kandahar city, seizing the outpost and capturing weapons and vehicles. Troops later recaptured the post.

“The enemy pressure was too heavy,” defence ministry spokesman General Dawlat Waziri said.

The attack came after days of fierce fighting across Afghanistan and underlined the steadily deteriorating security in much of the country, which has also seen a string of high profile attacks in cities including the capital Kabul.

As security has worsened, the Swedish Committee for Afghanistan, which runs medical clinics and educational activities, said it had been forced to close 20 clinics and its health management office in Laghman province, east of Kabul following threats from armed opposition groups.

While the fighting has intensified, the United States, which is expected to send around another 4,000 troops to Afghanistan to bolster its existing training mission, is still to announce its new strategy for the region.

The Taliban, fighting to restore Islamic rule to Afghanistan 16 years after being driven from power by a U.S.-led campaign, controls or contests at least 40 percent of the country, inflicting what U.S. advisers say are unsustainable casualties on Afghan security forces.

In the first 10 months of last year alone, some 6,785 soldiers and police were killed.

On Wednesday, the Taliban’s main spokesman said the insurgents were close to taking Waygal district in the eastern province of Nuristan, a day after they took Jani Kheil district in Paktika province, further to the south.

Over the past week, the insurgents have also taken districts in Ghor province in the west and Faryab in the north, although the defence ministry said government forces had retaken Kohistan district in Faryab.

Kunduz, the northern city which the Taliban captured briefly in 2015 and managed to enter in 2016, has also been under heavy pressure.

U.S. advisers say that Afghan security forces, fighting largely alone since a NATO-led coalition ended its main combat mission in 2014, have made progress but still rely too much on vulnerable checkpoints exposed to Taliban attack. (rtr)

WALL STREET: U.S. stock indexes inched further into record territory Wednesday after AT&T, Boeing and others joined the parade of big companies reporting stronger profits than analysts expected. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index edged up less than 0.1 percent to 2,477.83, adding a whisper to the record high set a day earlier. The Dow Jones industrial average gained 0.5 percent to 21,711.01, and the Nasdaq composite rose 0.2 percent to 6,422.75.

FEDERAL RESERVE: Wrapping up a two-day policy meeting, the Federal Reserve said that it may begin paring the massive $4.5 trillion balance sheet it built up following the financial crisis “relatively soon,” which some analysts took to mean September. The Fed also said that inflation will likely remain below its target of 2 percent in the near term. Those comments caused Treasury yields to drop, with the the 10-year yield falling to 2.29 percent from 2.33 percent late Tuesday. The two-year yield sank to 1.35 percent from 1.39 percent.

Lower bond yields make dividends paid by stocks more attractive, and the biggest dividend payers picked up momentum following the Fed’s announcement ANALYST VIEWPOINT: “The theme remains with earnings, propelling markets once again to fresh highs within the U.S. while the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting conclusion overnight provided another relief for equity markets. Asian markets are expected be ride on the positive leads and continue the climb in the day,” Jingyi Pan of IG said in a commentary.

SAMSUNG’S STRENGTH: Despite the arrest of its chief in a corruption scandal and the recalls and discontinuation of fire-prone Galaxy Note 7 smartphones, Samsung Electronics reported record high quarterly earnings thanks to booming demand for memory chips.

China’s state firms to shed old corporate governance structures by end-2017

BEIJING - All major Chinese enterprises owned by the central government will be turned into limited liability companies or joint-stock firms by the end of the year as part of reforms aimed at overhauling their unwieldy structures. Beijing is trying to revive China’s bloated state-owned sector and create “bigger and stronger” conglomerates capable of competing on the global stage. Restructuring state-owned enterprises (SOEs) will separate government administration from management of day-to-day business operations, one step towards greater efficiency.

About 90 percent of firms owned by local governments as well as the central government in Beijing have already completed the process, the cabinet said on its website on Wednesday.

SOEs have waned in recent years in their contribution to China’s economic output. Yet they continue to hold substantial resources ranging from land to funds. Their bloated structure is partly responsible for SOEs’ inefficient use of resources, just as China is asserting its clout in the global economy.

China is also pushing ahead with mixed ownership by allowing private capital to invest in firms while retaining the government’s presence in the companies. Beijing expects such diversification of corporate structures to take off in the second half of this year. But the state-owned asset regulator has already said “erroneous” notions such as “privatisation” and “de-nationalisation” should be avoided.

And the cabinet said on Wednesday efforts would be made to strengthen the party’s leadership at big state firms and to prevent the loss of state assets during restructuring. The party’s

leadership will help protect employees’ legal rights and ensure the stability of corporate reforms, the cabinet said. The board will have a say in major corporate decisions, hiring and salary distribution. Salary corridors linked to corporate profits and productivity will also be set up, according to the cabinet.

PRIORITIES The central government owns and administers 101 enterprises in sectors ranging from nuclear technology to medicine. The state asset regulator has told the enterprises and their subsidiaries to hand in their restructuring plans by end-September, the official Xinhua news agency said on Wednesday. Xinhua reported that 69 of the enterprises, holding assets totalling 7.97 trillion yuan ($1.2 trillion), have not registered themselves as either joint-stock companies or limited liability firms.

The subsidiaries of the 69 enterprises hold 5.66 trillion yuan of assets, Xinhua said.

Another problem facing China, particularly the lumbering state-owned giants, is a spike in debt since the 2008 global financial crisis.

Authorities have stepped up efforts to contain debt risks over the past year, and part of those steps have involved the restructuring of state firms. Earlier this year, the central bank said banks will withdraw support for financially unviable firms, repeating pledges by other officials to drive “zombie” firms out of the market. The SOE reforms come as the Communist Party prepares for a once-in-five-years congress in the fall.

Ahead of the congress, one of the government’s priorities has been to ensure stability in the country’s financial system. Further opening China’s economy and markets is another focus. China’s securities regulator pledged on Wednesday to expand access to capital markets for all types of investors, while encouraging more long-term institutional participation in the financial domain.(rtr)

Jero Penyarikan Payu accompanied by headman of Daup, Dewa Nyoman Saliawan, when met last Wednesday explained that ngaturang lakon is a tradition that must be executed by former customary leaders of Daup customary village in the position of Jero Kubayan, Jero Bau, Jero Singgukan, Jero Nyarikan and Jero Mangku (temple priest). On Wednesday there were a total of ten residents who took part in the ngaturang lako, seven of whom had served as Jero Kubayan, two as Jero Bau and one as Jero Mangku.

“This ngaturang lakon signifies a kind of returning of the offerings that were accepted when they were serving as leaders” explained Saliawan. According to the customs of the ngaturang lakon, residents who once served as kubayan (the highest position in the ulu apad system), are obliged to offer certain

oblations including two pigs. Those who served as Jero Bau and temple priests (Jero Mangku) only offer a pig. “This year a total of 17 pigs are being offered”, he said.

Jero Penyarikan Payu explained that the ngaturang laku begins with the negtegang procession, followed by nanceb taring and ngingsah. The procession was commenced three days ago and on Wednesday, the mapiuning (notifying) procession took place at the Puseh Temple in the morning when the pigs were brought to the temple.

Later in the afternoon, after performing the mapiuning, the participants went back to the Bale Agung to slaughter the pigs and prepared for various purposes. “Some of the pork is processed for offerings, some divided up for malang (divided equally amongst all the heads of family) and the remaining is made dishes like lawar, sate to be

eaten together” Payu explained.

Jero Penyarikan Payu went on to explained that the ngaturang lakon tradition is not actually a

necessity, however, if it is not implemented the former leaders are considered to have a spiritual debt. “Usually people give up their

position as customary leaders (pedulan) once all their children have gotten married” he added. (kmb)

Repel Calamities, Residents of Sema Agung Do Melasti with Tektekan

There are always unique things under the skies of Bali Island. Melasti procession held by residents of Sema Agung customary village, Tusan, Banjarangkan, Klungkung, to Tegal Besar Beach, Negari Village, looked different from the usual. It happens because the residents carried tektekan (bamboo split drum) and put on a hat of green coconut leaves with the aim of rejecting calamities.

This procession was held in a series of ngusaba desa at local village.

While cheering, people hit the bamboo along the road leading to the beach so that generates tektekan sound believed by citizens as the gong of the gods. They also believe that tektekan is used to dismiss calamities or a kind of ritual to dismiss pest and diseases.

But in keeping with the passage of time, the

use of tektekan is equipped with bamboo fire blower and gamelan.

“Historically, this tradition has been indeed inherited from past time. According to our senior figures, in the past the tektekan was trusted to dismiss calamities like in the nangluk merana ritual,” said the priest of Dalem Penyarikan Puseh Bale Agung Temple of Sema Agung, Ketut Purna, not long ago. He told there are 75 pieces of tektekan brought by residents. They are created at people’s home. Once completed, they are collected at Dalem Penyarikan Temple to be ritually activated (pasupati).

The making of such bamboo split drum or tektekan is done in turn by customary villagers. Currently, the tektekan is made by residents of Kawan hamlet, while the ritual is organized by Kanginan hamlet.

More specifically, Jro Mangku Purna said the melasti procession is started by residents by gathering at the intersection of Sema Agung.

After that, the residents venerating the deities head to Ulunsuwi Temple and Dalem Setra.

From Dalem Setra, they proceed to Dalem Penyarikan at Puseh Bale Agung Temple. At this temple, devotees say prayers together and invoke purificatory holy water. The procession is done to ward off pests or eliminate calamities or disaster at village such as diseases and epidemics.

Residents walk along five kilometers to the beach and resume the melasti procession to Tegal Besar Beach. A few people are in trance from the road to Tegal Besar Beach.

After sprinkled with holy water, the devotees

in trance then regained their consciousness.

Arriving back from melasti procession to the beach, the deities spun clockwise at the boundaries of Sema Agung customary village. Next, the deities were enthroned at Melanting Temple.

“After the deities are enthroned at Melanting Temple, the following day, Wednesday (Apr. 12) the deities dance, and the ritual then comes to an end on the Penampahan Kuningan,” said Jro Mangku Purna.

According to Jro Mangku Purna, after carrying out melasti the tektekan is put at the temple. It is allowed to be taken home by residents after the closing ceremony at the Dalem Penyarikan. Tektekan can also be used for the next year in the same ceremony. But if broken, it can be replaced with the new one by the residents and activated. “In the 1970s, the deities of Dalem Penyarikan performed melasti procession to the beach, while the face of companion is smeared with char.

However, it is rarely done today,” he said.

Jro Mangku Purna also recognized that melasti procession by using tektekan is once abolished due to coinciding with Nyepi celebration. As a result, it brought in plague.

Many plants belonging to residents were attacked by pests. So, the use of tektekan in the melasti procession is held back abruptly and then regularly held every year coinciding with the full moon in the Balinese tenth month. “At that time, our residents immediately held a melasti procession by using tektekan. Thus, the ritual lasted till night,” added Jro Mangku Purna. (kmb)

Trump to ban transgender U.S. military personnel, reversing Obama

WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he would ban transgender people from the U.S. military, a move appealing to some in his conservative political base but creating uncertainty about the fate of thousands of transgender service members.

The surprise announcement by Trump, who as a presidential candidate last year vowed to fight for lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people, came in a series of morning Twitter posts. It drew condemnation from rights groups and some lawmakers in both parties as politically motivated discrimination but was praised by conservative activists and some Republicans.

The administration has not determined whether transgender individuals already serving in the military would be immediately thrown out, a point the White House and Pentagon have yet to decide, Trump spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said.

A transgender ban would reverse Democratic former President Barack Obama’s policy and halts years of efforts to eliminate barriers to military service based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

“After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military,” Trump

tweeted, without naming any of the generals or experts.

“Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail,” he said.

Sanders said Trump had “extensive discussions with his national security team,” and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis was informed after the president made the decision on Tuesday.

“This was about military readiness,” Sanders told a briefing. “This was about unit cohesion. This was about resources within the military, and nothing more.”

The Pentagon earlier referred questions about Trump’s decision to the White House.

Critics said the health costs of caring for transgender service members were a tiny portion of the military’s healthcare budget and Trump’s policy change was based on prejudice.

His action unleashed a torrent of legal threats from civil liberties advocates seeking plaintiffs willing to challenge the ban in court and sparked a protest by hundreds who rallied outside an armed forces recruiting station in Manhattan’s Times Square.

“We are in a crisis. This is a dark day for everyone,” Brad Hoylman, New York’s sole openly gay state senator, said as he addressed the crowd, which carried “Resist” signs amid chants of: “Hey-hey, ho-ho, Donald Trump has got to go.” (rtr)

Electric cars win? Britain to ban new petrol and diesel cars from 2040 LONDON - Britain will ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2040 in an attempt to reduce air pollution that could herald the end of over a century of reliance on the internal combustion engine.

Britain’s step, which follows France, amounts to a victory for electric cars that if copied globally could hit the wealth of oil producers, as well as transform car industry jobs and one of the icons of 20th Century capitalism: the automobile itself.

The mayors of Paris, Madrid, Mexico City and Athens have said they plan to ban diesel vehicles from city centres by 2025, while the French government also aims to end the sale of new gasoline and diesel vehicles by 2040.

The British government has been under pressure to take steps to reduce air pollution after losing legal cases brought by campaign groups. Prime Minister Theresa May’s Conservatives had pledged to make “almost every car and van” zero-emission by 2050.

“There should be no new diesel or petrol vehicles by 2040,” environment minister Michael Gove told BBC Radio. The ban would only apply to conventional rather than hybrid vehicles that have both an electric and combustion engine, Gove’s ministry said.

There is a mountain to climb, however.

Electric cars currently account for less than 5 percent of new car registrations in Britain, with drivers concerned about the cost and limited availability of charging points and manufacturers worried about making expensive investments before the demand is there.

“We could undermine the UK’s successful automotive sector if we don’t allow enough time for the industry to adjust,” warned Mike Hawes, chief executive of the So-

ciety of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

Hawes said there were only 12,000 public charging points in Britain and new power infrastructure would be needed, as well as steps to ensure the power network could cope with large numbers of people seeking to charge vehicles at the same time.

THE FUTURE IS ELECTRIC? While many automakers may find it hard to countenance the end of the combustion engine, some have embraced a future where electric vehicles, or perhaps even driverless ones, prevail.

This month, Volvo became the first major traditional automaker to set a date for phasing out vehicles powered solely by the internal combustion engine by saying all its car models launched after 2019 would be electric or hybrids.

Renault-Nissan in 2009 announced plans to spend 4 billion euros on electric car development.

But until Volkswagen (VW) admitted in 2015 to cheating on U.S. diesel emissions tests, most mainstream auto manufacturers had been slow to sink serious investment into battery cars.

The backlash against diesel, without which carmakers would struggle to meet CO2 targets, has since refocused minds and produced a flurry of new commitments.

VW itself unveiled ambitious plans last year to roll out 30 new battery-powered models that it expects to account for 2-3 million annual sales by 2025 - or as much as 25 percent of its vehicle production.

Jakarta’s traffic-clogged economy gets a lift from motorbike deliveries

JAKARTA - Three years ago, Ferly Aninditya’s stall at a Jakarta food court was losing money. Deterred by the Indonesian capital’s paralysing traffic, few customers were prepared to come to him. But that was before he teamed up with Go-Jek, the ride-hailing motorbike service that delivers everything from meals and groceries to cleaners and hairdressers across Jakarta, all at the touch of a smartphone app.

Now Aninditya owns a chain of small restaurants with seven thriving branches that send Indonesian-style fish and chips by Go-Jek’s army of motorbike riders across Jakarta. “I’ve come this far in part because of GoJek,” said Aninditya. “It’s not just sales, but they also helped by spreading our brand through the app.” GoJek has become a crucial workaround in a city with some of the worst traffic in the world. The service’s riders can move goods and people faster around the city than cars, helping businesses increase sales dramatically as they reach more consumers.

Go-Jek, a play on the local word for motorbike taxis, ojek, was set up

by Nadiem Makarim, a graduate of the Harvard School of Business and a former associate with McKinsey, who has quickly become a poster child for start-up success in Indonesia. The company, which counts China’s Tencent Holdings Ltd and the private equity firm Warburg Pincus LLC as investors, has transformed Jakarta’s economy, economists say.

Bank Indonesia, the central bank, is studying that economic impact.

The bank’s chief fintech officer, Junanto Herdiawan, said data was

still being collected, but the initial findings were “quite remarkable.” He added: “It could be a game-changer should society keep benefiting from Go-Jek’s services.” Sri Hartati, the head of the Jakarta government’s Economics Bureau, said Go-Jek has had a “big” impact on consumption and trade in the city. “It has changed people’s behaviour, that’s for sure.”

The Indonesia Franchise association estimates its members saw revenue improve 30 percent on average after using Go-Jek. The Association of Hotels and Restaurants says GoJek has increased sales by 15-20 percent for most of its 3,000 members in Jakarta. Companies pay a percentage of sales to Go-Jek; Aninditya says he pays 15 percent.

Eggi Banon, a 45-year-old beautician, signed up with the app this month and says she has already seen business increase. “It turns out it’s more profitable working through an app, rather than waiting at my salon,” said Banon, who now hops on a motorbike and leaves the salon when clients order her services through Go-Jek. Other companies supply cleaners or masseurs, or dispatch a dizzying array of products - flowers, medicine, movie tickets, cameras and eyeglasses.

A Go-Jek spokeswoman declined to say whether the company itself, which is not listed, was profitable.

Media reports put the value of the start-up at $2 billion when a funding round started this year.

Most of Go-Jek’s business is centred on Jakarta, but the company also has smaller operations in 24 other cities and is considering expanding to 10 more, capitalizing on transport and logistics shortfalls that have long hobbled Indonesia’s economy.

The World Bank estimates that because of traffic jams, every 1 percent growth in urbanisation in Indonesia delivers only 4 percent of long-term GDP growth, compared with 13 percent in India and 10 percent in China.

THE DOWNSIDE

Not everybody is happy about Go-Jek and the emergence of other ride-hailing services. Indonesia’s largest taxi operator, PT Blue Bird Tbk, lost three quarters of its market value over a 20-month period from the beginning of 2015, which coincided with the emergence of Go-Jek, as well as the international ride-hailing brands Uber and Grab. Blue Bird’s shares have since recovered after announcing a partnership with Go-Jek that allows customers to order cabs through the Go-Jek app. But they remain well below 2015 peaks.

PT Tiki Jalur Nugraha Ekakurir (JNE), a logistics company, says Go-Jek has disrupted its same-city deliveries. “It does make us feel that we have to improve our services,” said Mohammad Feriadi, the president director of JNE. Go-Jek’s success also relies on pricing and the ubiquity of its riders,

which means that many are now working longer hours to match the earnings they were making in the app’s early days when the team was smaller. Today, Go-Jek uses an estimated 250,000 riders, most of them in Jakarta. “To get 100,000 per day is hard,” said Aming, 47, who joined Go-Jek in 2015 and only gave his first name, referring to his rupiah earnings worth about $7.50.

Go-Jek, though, says it increases job opportunities for low-skilled workers. “It’s a fair market,” said Monica Oudang, who heads human resources at Go-Jek. “If the price is too low, then no drivers would take the order. If it’s too expensive, then customers won’t use it.”

SYSTEMIC CONCERNS

Regulators are also examining Go-Jek and its activities. Hartati, from Jakarta’s economic bureau, said she was concerned about safety, but was not considering issuing regulations at this stage.

Some academics have also raised concerns about the systemic risks of a company like Go-Jek becoming too ubiquitous. If businesses and consumers rely too much on it, they say, any problems for the company could have ripple effects for the entire economy. “Go-Jek can create customer dependence,” said Telisa Falianty, a lecturer at University of Indonesia. “When customers have no other options, it could be troublesome.” (rtr)

The 30-year-old posted a video statement on Facebook in which he said he had decided to let heal the injury which caused him to retire during his Wimbledon quarter-final against Czech Tomas Berdych earlier this month.

“I’ve made a decision to not play any competitions or tournaments for the rest of the 2017 season,” Djokovic, down at number four in the world rankings for the first time since 2009, said. “It’s a decision that had to be made.”

Djokovic then told a news conference he had decided to take six months off after consulting doctors and specialists in Serbia and abroad.

“I have been dragging this injury for the past 18 months and it has escalated in the last month or two,”

Djokovic, who will miss a grand slam for the first time since 2004 at Flushing Meadows, said. “It became very painful at Wimbledon, where unfortunately I had to retire against Berdych.”

He said surgery would not be necessary, however.

Djokovic has endured a difficult 12 months on the court, losing all the grand slam titles he held simultaneously after winning the 2016 French Open. He also lost his world number one ranking to Andy Murray at the end of last year.

In May he split with his entire coaching team, having parted with Boris Becker at the end of last year.

Djokovic now faces the prospect of being outside the top 10 when he returns at the start of next year -- although he said he was already

relishing the prospect of battling back to the top.

“I will definitely play in the first week of next season,” he said.

“I have enough time to recover as the first tournament of 2018 is six months away.

“Having accomplished so much in my career I will find it difficult not to aspire to win tournaments.”

“Believe it or not, I am actually looking forward to playing the top seeds in the third or fourth round of major tournaments because for once the pressure will be off.”

Djokovic was troubled by the elbow last season and again this year when he pulled out of the Miami Open.

He said it had also been difficult having achieved the career grand slam at last year’s French Open. (rtr)

Morris’s 88thminute goal gives US Gold Cup title SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Jordan Morris scored a tiebreaking goal in the 88th minute, and the United States beat Jamaica 2-1 Wednesday night for its sixth CONCACAF Gold Cup title and first since 2013.

Jozy Altidore’s goal on a 28-yard free kick in the 45th minute beat backup goalkeeper Dwayne Miller after Jamaica captain Andre Blake left early with a hand injury. Je-Vaughn Watson tied the score when he got away from Morris for a 4-yard volley off Kemar Lawrence’s 50th-minute corner kick.

Morris, a star at nearby Stanford from 2013-15, got the breakthrough goal with a 14-yard right-footed shot after Gyasi Zardes crossed. Jermaine Taylor tried to clear with a header and the ball was knocked by Clint Dempsey with a leg back to Morris. It was the fifth international goal for the 22-year-old Morris, who tied 16-year-old Canadian Alphonso Davies for the tournament lead with three goals.

“I was nervous. It was my guy that scored on the goal, so I was trying to make up for it any way that I could,” Morris said. “Obviously. I take responsibility for that. But luckily I could put one in the back of the net.” The U.S. extended its unbeaten streak to 14 games (9-05) under Bruce Arena, who became the first coach to win three Gold Cup titles.

FIFPro pushes for union to protect player rights in China

HOOFDDORP — The world players’ union is pushing for the creation of a footballers’ association in China amid concerns about overdue payments in the burgeoning league. “Media reports this week revealed several Chinese Super League clubs are falling behind on payments, and FIFPro wishes to ensure that affected players have somewhere to turn to for help,” FIFpro said in a statement.

The Asian Football Confederation has warned clubs across the continent to settle debts to players

by Aug. 31 or risk competition bans. The Chinese Football Association reportedly followed up with letters to all but three of the country’s 16 top-flight clubs to raise concerns about outstanding debts on transfers, salaries or bonuses. The bulk of the clubs denied being in arrears to players and said they were sending paperwork to the CFA. FIFpro said overdue payables to players was a global issue, with a survey of 14,000 players in 2016 showing that 41 percent had experienced unpaid wages or bonuses in the previous two seasons. A separate study in Asia in 2015 involving 1,000 players in nine countries showed that a quarter of players had experienced times when their pay was overdue.

“Players in China do not have the benefit of a local players’ association to protect their interests,” FIFpro said, noting that China had

shown a strong commitment to developing the game. “In time, the establishment of an association which protects the players and ensures their voices are represented in administering the sport would be beneficial to further enhance China’s plan to become a global football powerhouse.”

After decades of dismal national team results, President Xi Jinping pinpointed improving Chinese soccer as a top priority. Chinese Super League clubs subsequently shook up international soccer by offering large transfer fees and wages for players from European teams.

Over the past year, transfers such as Shanghai SIPG’s 60 million euro (then $66.6 million) deal for Brazilian midfielder Hulk have brought a wave of attention to the league, but critics say the purchases lead to little long-term benefit for Chinese soccer. The CFA has recently taken measures to slow down the influx of foreign stars and to promote the development of homegrown talent by introducing a special tax during the last transfer window.

The sport’s national governing body ruled that that any club paying more than 45 million renminbi ($6.63 million) million for a player transfer must pay the same amount to a domestic youth development fund. The CFA has also proposed a rule that would require clubs to play an under-23 Chinese player for every foreign player on the field. (ap)

BUENOS AIRES — Argentina and Uruguay are going ahead with plans to make a joint bid to host the 2030 World Cup despite expected competition from China and others. The South American neighbors are counting on sentimental support with Uruguay hosting the first World Cup in 1930.

Argentine sports secretary Carlos Mac Allister said in a Wednesday interview that the presidents of both countries and leaders of the two national soccer federations had agreed to move ahead.

Politicians will face questions about potentially spending billions on soccer stadiums. South American neighbor Brazil hosted the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics and was roundly criticized for building “white elephant” sports venues and ignoring run-down schools and hospitals.

Argentina (1978 and 1986) and Uruguay (1930 and 1950) have each won the World Cup twice. (ap)

FIFPro pushes for union to protect player rights in China

HOOFDDORP — The world players’ union is pushing for the creation of a footballers’ association in China amid concerns about overdue payments in the burgeoning league. “Media reports this week revealed several Chinese Super League clubs are falling behind on payments, and FIFPro wishes to ensure that affected players have somewhere to turn to for help,” FIFpro said in a statement.

The Asian Football Confederation has warned clubs across the continent to settle debts to players

by Aug. 31 or risk competition bans. The Chinese Football Association reportedly followed up with letters to all but three of the country’s 16 top-flight clubs to raise concerns about outstanding debts on transfers, salaries or bonuses. The bulk of the clubs denied being in arrears to players and said they were sending paperwork to the CFA. FIFpro said overdue payables to players was a global issue, with a survey of 14,000 players in 2016 showing that 41 percent had experienced unpaid wages or bonuses in the previous two seasons. A separate study in Asia in 2015 involving 1,000 players in nine countries showed that a quarter of players had experienced times when their pay was overdue.

“Players in China do not have the benefit of a local players’ association to protect their interests,” FIFpro said, noting that China had

shown a strong commitment to developing the game. “In time, the establishment of an association which protects the players and ensures their voices are represented in administering the sport would be beneficial to further enhance China’s plan to become a global football powerhouse.”

After decades of dismal national team results, President Xi Jinping pinpointed improving Chinese soccer as a top priority. Chinese Super League clubs subsequently shook up international soccer by offering large transfer fees and wages for players from European teams.

Over the past year, transfers such as Shanghai SIPG’s 60 million euro (then $66.6 million) deal for Brazilian midfielder Hulk have brought a wave of attention to the league, but critics say the purchases lead to little long-term benefit for Chinese soccer. The CFA has recently taken measures to slow down the influx of foreign stars and to promote the development of homegrown talent by introducing a special tax during the last transfer window.

The sport’s national governing body ruled that that any club paying more than 45 million renminbi ($6.63 million) million for a player transfer must pay the same amount to a domestic youth development fund. The CFA has also proposed a rule that would require clubs to play an under-23 Chinese player for every foreign player on the field. (ap)

BUENOS AIRES — Argentina and Uruguay are going ahead with plans to make a joint bid to host the 2030 World Cup despite expected competition from China and others. The South American neighbors are counting on sentimental support with Uruguay hosting the first World Cup in 1930.

Argentine sports secretary Carlos Mac Allister said in a Wednesday interview that the presidents of both countries and leaders of the two national soccer federations had agreed to move ahead.

The 30-year-old posted a video statement on Facebook in which he said he had decided to let heal the injury which caused him to retire during his Wimbledon quarter-final against Czech Tomas Berdych earlier this month.

“I’ve made a decision to not play any competitions or tournaments for the rest of the 2017 season,” Djokovic, down at number four in the world rankings for the first time since 2009, said. “It’s a decision that had to be made.”

Djokovic then told a news conference he had decided to take six months off after consulting doctors and specialists in Serbia and abroad.

“I have been dragging this injury for the past 18 months and it has escalated in the last month or two,”

Djokovic, who will miss a grand slam for the first time since 2004 at Flushing Meadows, said. “It became very painful at Wimbledon, where unfortunately I had to retire against Berdych.”

He said surgery would not be necessary, however.

Djokovic has endured a difficult 12 months on the court, losing all the grand slam titles he held simultaneously after winning the 2016 French Open. He also lost his world number one ranking to Andy Murray at the end of last year.

In May he split with his entire coaching team, having parted with Boris Becker at the end of last year.

Djokovic now faces the prospect of being outside the top 10 when he returns at the start of next year -- although he said he was already

relishing the prospect of battling back to the top.

“I will definitely play in the first week of next season,” he said.

“I have enough time to recover as the first tournament of 2018 is six months away.

“Having accomplished so much in my career I will find it difficult not to aspire to win tournaments.”

“Believe it or not, I am actually looking forward to playing the top seeds in the third or fourth round of major tournaments because for once the pressure will be off.”

Djokovic was troubled by the elbow last season and again this year when he pulled out of the Miami Open.

He said it had also been difficult having achieved the career grand slam at last year’s French Open. (rtr)

Trump to ban transgender U.S. military personnel, reversing Obama

WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he would ban transgender people from the U.S. military, a move appealing to some in his conservative political base but creating uncertainty about the fate of thousands of transgender service members.

The surprise announcement by Trump, who as a presidential candidate last year vowed to fight for lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people, came in a series of morning Twitter posts. It drew condemnation from rights groups and some lawmakers in both parties as politically motivated discrimination but was praised by conservative activists and some Republicans.

The administration has not determined whether transgender individuals already serving in the military would be immediately thrown out, a point the White House and Pentagon have yet to decide, Trump spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said.

A transgender ban would reverse Democratic former President Barack Obama’s policy and halts years of efforts to eliminate barriers to military service based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

“After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military,” Trump

tweeted, without naming any of the generals or experts.

“Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail,” he said.

Sanders said Trump had “extensive discussions with his national security team,” and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis was informed after the president made the decision on Tuesday.

“This was about military readiness,” Sanders told a briefing. “This was about unit cohesion. This was about resources within the military, and nothing more.”

The Pentagon earlier referred questions about Trump’s decision to the White House.

Critics said the health costs of caring for transgender service members were a tiny portion of the military’s healthcare budget and Trump’s policy change was based on prejudice.

His action unleashed a torrent of legal threats from civil liberties advocates seeking plaintiffs willing to challenge the ban in court and sparked a protest by hundreds who rallied outside an armed forces recruiting station in Manhattan’s Times Square.

“We are in a crisis. This is a dark day for everyone,” Brad Hoylman, New York’s sole openly gay state senator, said as he addressed the crowd, which carried “Resist” signs amid chants of: “Hey-hey, ho-ho, Donald Trump has got to go.” (rtr)

Electric cars win? Britain to ban new petrol and diesel cars from 2040 LONDON - Britain will ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2040 in an attempt to reduce air pollution that could herald the end of over a century of reliance on the internal combustion engine.

Britain’s step, which follows France, amounts to a victory for electric cars that if copied globally could hit the wealth of oil producers, as well as transform car industry jobs and one of the icons of 20th Century capitalism: the automobile itself.

The mayors of Paris, Madrid, Mexico City and Athens have said they plan to ban diesel vehicles from city centres by 2025, while the French government also aims to end the sale of new gasoline and diesel vehicles by 2040.

The British government has been under pressure to take steps to reduce air pollution after losing legal cases brought by campaign groups. Prime Minister Theresa May’s Conservatives had pledged to make “almost every car and van” zero-emission by 2050.

“There should be no new diesel or petrol vehicles by 2040,” environment minister Michael Gove told BBC Radio. The ban would only apply to conventional rather than hybrid vehicles that have both an electric and combustion engine, Gove’s ministry said.

There is a mountain to climb, however.

Electric cars currently account for less than 5 percent of new car registrations in Britain, with drivers concerned about the cost and limited availability of charging points and manufacturers worried about making expensive investments before the demand is there.

“We could undermine the UK’s successful automotive sector if we don’t allow enough time for the industry to adjust,” warned Mike Hawes, chief executive of the So-

ciety of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

Hawes said there were only 12,000 public charging points in Britain and new power infrastructure would be needed, as well as steps to ensure the power network could cope with large numbers of people seeking to charge vehicles at the same time.

THE FUTURE IS ELECTRIC? While many automakers may find it hard to countenance the end of the combustion engine, some have embraced a future where electric vehicles, or perhaps even driverless ones, prevail.

This month, Volvo became the first major traditional automaker to set a date for phasing out vehicles powered solely by the internal combustion engine by saying all its car models launched after 2019 would be electric or hybrids.

Renault-Nissan in 2009 announced plans to spend 4 billion euros on electric car development.

But until Volkswagen (VW) admitted in 2015 to cheating on U.S. diesel emissions tests, most mainstream auto manufacturers had been slow to sink serious investment into battery cars.

The backlash against diesel, without which carmakers would struggle to meet CO2 targets, has since refocused minds and produced a flurry of new commitments.

VW itself unveiled ambitious plans last year to roll out 30 new battery-powered models that it expects to account for 2-3 million annual sales by 2025 - or as much as 25 percent of its vehicle production.

“Even though modern combustion engines will be relevant for at least another 20 years, it is clear that the future will be ruled by electric drives,” VW chief executive Matthias Mueller said earlier this year. (rtr)

Jakarta’s traffic-clogged economy gets a lift from motorbike deliveries

JAKARTA - Three years ago, Ferly Aninditya’s stall at a Jakarta food court was losing money. Deterred by the Indonesian capital’s paralysing traffic, few customers were prepared to come to him. But that was before he teamed up with Go-Jek, the ride-hailing motorbike service that delivers everything from meals and groceries to cleaners and hairdressers across Jakarta, all at the touch of a smartphone app.

Now Aninditya owns a chain of small restaurants with seven thriving branches that send Indonesian-style fish and chips by Go-Jek’s army of motorbike riders across Jakarta. “I’ve come this far in part because of GoJek,” said Aninditya. “It’s not just sales, but they also helped by spreading our brand through the app.” GoJek has become a crucial workaround in a city with some of the worst traffic in the world. The service’s riders can move goods and people faster around the city than cars, helping businesses increase sales dramatically as they reach more consumers.

Go-Jek, a play on the local word for motorbike taxis, ojek, was set up

by Nadiem Makarim, a graduate of the Harvard School of Business and a former associate with McKinsey, who has quickly become a poster child for start-up success in Indonesia. The company, which counts China’s Tencent Holdings Ltd and the private equity firm Warburg Pincus LLC as investors, has transformed Jakarta’s economy, economists say.

Bank Indonesia, the central bank, is studying that economic impact.

The bank’s chief fintech officer, Junanto Herdiawan, said data was

still being collected, but the initial findings were “quite remarkable.” He added: “It could be a game-changer should society keep benefiting from Go-Jek’s services.” Sri Hartati, the head of the Jakarta government’s Economics Bureau, said Go-Jek has had a “big” impact on consumption and trade in the city. “It has changed people’s behaviour, that’s for sure.”

The Indonesia Franchise association estimates its members saw revenue improve 30 percent on average after using Go-Jek. The Association of Hotels and Restaurants says GoJek has increased sales by 15-20 percent for most of its 3,000 members in Jakarta. Companies pay a percentage of sales to Go-Jek; Aninditya says he pays 15 percent.

Eggi Banon, a 45-year-old beautician, signed up with the app this month and says she has already seen business increase. “It turns out it’s more profitable working through an app, rather than waiting at my salon,” said Banon, who now hops on a motorbike and leaves the salon when clients order her services through Go-Jek. Other companies supply cleaners or masseurs, or dispatch a dizzying array of products - flowers, medicine, movie tickets, cameras and eyeglasses.

A Go-Jek spokeswoman declined to say whether the company itself, which is not listed, was profitable.

Media reports put the value of the start-up at $2 billion when a funding round started this year.

Most of Go-Jek’s business is centred on Jakarta, but the company also has smaller operations in 24 other cities and is considering expanding to 10 more, capitalizing on transport and logistics shortfalls that have long hobbled Indonesia’s economy.

The World Bank estimates that because of traffic jams, every 1 percent growth in urbanisation in Indonesia delivers only 4 percent of long-term GDP growth, compared with 13 percent in India and 10 percent in China.

THE DOWNSIDE

Not everybody is happy about Go-Jek and the emergence of other ride-hailing services. Indonesia’s largest taxi operator, PT Blue Bird Tbk, lost three quarters of its market value over a 20-month period from the beginning of 2015, which coincided with the emergence of Go-Jek, as well as the international ride-hailing brands Uber and Grab. Blue Bird’s shares have since recovered after announcing a partnership with Go-Jek that allows customers to order cabs through the Go-Jek app. But they remain well below 2015 peaks.

PT Tiki Jalur Nugraha Ekakurir (JNE), a logistics company, says Go-Jek has disrupted its same-city deliveries. “It does make us feel that we have to improve our services,” said Mohammad Feriadi, the president director of JNE. Go-Jek’s success also relies on pricing and the ubiquity of its riders,

which means that many are now working longer hours to match the earnings they were making in the app’s early days when the team was smaller. Today, Go-Jek uses an estimated 250,000 riders, most of them in Jakarta. “To get 100,000 per day is hard,” said Aming, 47, who joined Go-Jek in 2015 and only gave his first name, referring to his rupiah earnings worth about $7.50.

Go-Jek, though, says it increases job opportunities for low-skilled workers. “It’s a fair market,” said Monica Oudang, who heads human resources at Go-Jek. “If the price is too low, then no drivers would take the order. If it’s too expensive, then customers won’t use it.”

SYSTEMIC CONCERNS

Regulators are also examining Go-Jek and its activities. Hartati, from Jakarta’s economic bureau, said she was concerned about safety, but was not considering issuing regulations at this stage.

Some academics have also raised concerns about the systemic risks of a company like Go-Jek becoming too ubiquitous. If businesses and consumers rely too much on it, they say, any problems for the company could have ripple effects for the entire economy. “Go-Jek can create customer dependence,” said Telisa Falianty, a lecturer at University of Indonesia. “When customers have no other options, it could be troublesome.” (rtr)

BUSINESS Asian shares gain on strong earnings, dovish Fed policy TOKYO — Asian shares were mostly higher Thursday, supported by strong corporate earnings and the Federal Reserve’s decision to pause its slow-moving campaign to raise interest rates. KEEPING SCORE: Japan’s Nikkei 225 gained 0.1 percent to 20,065.21 and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng climbed 0.5 percent to 27,066.71. South Korea’s Kospi added 0.2 percent to 2,439.39 and the S&P ASX 200 of Australia climbed 0.3 percent to 5,795.30. Taiwan’s index climbed 0.9 percent after electronics maker Foxconn announced a $10 billion investment in Wisconsin that is expected to create 3,000 jobs.

The Shanghai Composite index slipped 0.3 percent to 3,237.04 and shares in Southeast Asia were mixed.

WALL STREET: U.S. stock indexes inched further into record territory Wednesday after AT&T, Boeing and others joined the parade of big companies reporting stronger profits than analysts expected. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index edged up less than 0.1 percent to 2,477.83, adding a whisper to the record high set a day earlier. The Dow Jones industrial average gained 0.5 percent to 21,711.01, and the Nasdaq composite rose 0.2 percent to 6,422.75.

FEDERAL RESERVE: Wrapping up a two-day policy meeting, the Federal Reserve said that it may begin paring the massive $4.5 trillion balance sheet it built up following the financial crisis “relatively soon,” which some analysts took to mean September. The Fed also said that inflation will likely remain below its target of 2 percent in the near term. Those comments caused Treasury yields to drop, with the the 10-year yield falling to 2.29 percent from 2.33 percent late Tuesday. The two-year yield sank to 1.35 percent from 1.39 percent.

China’s state firms to shed old corporate governance structures by end-2017

BEIJING - All major Chinese enterprises owned by the central government will be turned into limited liability companies or joint-stock firms by the end of the year as part of reforms aimed at overhauling their unwieldy structures. Beijing is trying to revive China’s bloated state-owned sector and create “bigger and stronger” conglomerates capable of competing on the global stage. Restructuring state-owned enterprises (SOEs) will separate government administration from management of day-to-day business operations, one step towards greater efficiency.

About 90 percent of firms owned by local governments as well as the central government in Beijing have already completed the process, the cabinet said on its website on Wednesday.

SOEs have waned in recent years in their contribution to China’s economic output. Yet they continue to hold substantial resources ranging from land to funds. Their bloated structure is partly responsible for SOEs’ inefficient use of resources, just as China is asserting its clout in the global economy.

China is also pushing ahead with mixed ownership by allowing private capital to invest in firms while retaining the government’s presence in the companies. Beijing expects such diversification of corporate structures to take off in the second half of this year. But the state-owned asset regulator has already said “erroneous” notions such as “privatisation” and “de-nationalisation” should be avoided.

The board will have a say in major corporate decisions, hiring and salary distribution. Salary corridors linked to corporate profits and productivity will also be set up, according to the cabinet.

PRIORITIES The central government owns and administers 101 enterprises in sectors ranging from nuclear technology to medicine. The state asset regulator has told the enterprises and their subsidiaries to hand in their restructuring plans by end-September, the official Xinhua news agency said on Wednesday. Xinhua reported that 69 of the enterprises, holding assets totalling 7.97 trillion yuan ($1.2 trillion), have not registered themselves as either joint-stock companies or limited liability firms.

The subsidiaries of the 69 enterprises hold 5.66 trillion yuan of assets, Xinhua said.

Another problem facing China, particularly the lumbering state-owned giants, is a spike in debt since the 2008 global financial crisis.

Authorities have stepped up efforts to contain debt risks over the past year, and part of those steps have involved the restructuring of state firms. Earlier this year, the central bank said banks will withdraw support for financially unviable firms, repeating pledges by other officials to drive “zombie” firms out of the market. The SOE reforms come as the Communist Party prepares for a once-in-five-years congress in the fall.

Ahead of the congress, one of the government’s priorities has been to ensure stability in the country’s financial system. Further opening China’s economy and markets is another focus. China’s securities regulator pledged on Wednesday to expand access to capital markets for all types of investors, while encouraging more long-term institutional participation in the financial domain.(rtr)

Jero Penyarikan Payu accompanied by headman of Daup, Dewa Nyoman Saliawan, when met last Wednesday explained that ngaturang lakon is a tradition that must be executed by former customary leaders of Daup customary village in the position of Jero Kubayan, Jero Bau, Jero Singgukan, Jero Nyarikan and Jero Mangku (temple priest). On Wednesday there were a total of ten residents who took part in the ngaturang lako, seven of whom had served as Jero Kubayan, two as Jero Bau and one as Jero Mangku.

“This ngaturang lakon signifies a kind of returning of the offerings that were accepted when they were serving as leaders” explained Saliawan. According to the customs of the ngaturang lakon, residents who once served as kubayan (the highest position in the ulu apad system), are obliged to offer certain

oblations including two pigs. Those who served as Jero Bau and temple priests (Jero Mangku) only offer a pig. “This year a total of 17 pigs are being offered”, he said.

Jero Penyarikan Payu explained that the ngaturang laku begins with the negtegang procession, followed by nanceb taring and ngingsah. The procession was commenced three days ago and on Wednesday, the mapiuning (notifying) procession took place at the Puseh Temple in the morning when the pigs were brought to the temple.

Later in the afternoon, after performing the mapiuning, the participants went back to the Bale Agung to slaughter the pigs and prepared for various purposes. “Some of the pork is processed for offerings, some divided up for malang (divided equally amongst all the heads of family) and the remaining is made dishes like lawar, sate to be

eaten together” Payu explained.

Jero Penyarikan Payu went on to explained that the ngaturang lakon tradition is not actually a

necessity, however, if it is not implemented the former leaders are considered to have a spiritual debt. “Usually people give up their

position as customary leaders (pedulan) once all their children have gotten married” he added. (kmb)

Repel Calamities, Residents of Sema Agung Do Melasti with Tektekan

There are always unique things under the skies of Bali Island. Melasti procession held by residents of Sema Agung customary village, Tusan, Banjarangkan, Klungkung, to Tegal Besar Beach, Negari Village, looked different from the usual. It happens because the residents carried tektekan (bamboo split drum) and put on a hat of green coconut leaves with the aim of rejecting calamities.

This procession was held in a series of ngusaba desa at local village.

While cheering, people hit the bamboo along the road leading to the beach so that generates tektekan sound believed by citizens as the gong of the gods. They also believe that tektekan is used to dismiss calamities or a kind of ritual to dismiss pest and diseases.

But in keeping with the passage of time, the

use of tektekan is equipped with bamboo fire blower and gamelan.

“Historically, this tradition has been indeed inherited from past time. According to our senior figures, in the past the tektekan was trusted to dismiss calamities like in the nangluk merana ritual,” said the priest of Dalem Penyarikan Puseh Bale Agung Temple of Sema Agung, Ketut Purna, not long ago. He told there are 75 pieces of tektekan brought by residents. They are created at people’s home. Once completed, they are collected at Dalem Penyarikan Temple to be ritually activated (pasupati).

The making of such bamboo split drum or tektekan is done in turn by customary villagers. Currently, the tektekan is made by residents of Kawan hamlet, while the ritual is organized by Kanginan hamlet.

More specifically, Jro Mangku Purna said the melasti procession is started by residents by gathering at the intersection of Sema Agung.

After that, the residents venerating the deities head to Ulunsuwi Temple and Dalem Setra.

From Dalem Setra, they proceed to Dalem Penyarikan at Puseh Bale Agung Temple. At this temple, devotees say prayers together and invoke purificatory holy water. The procession is done to ward off pests or eliminate calamities or disaster at village such as diseases and epidemics.

Residents walk along five kilometers to the beach and resume the melasti procession to Tegal Besar Beach. A few people are in trance from the road to Tegal Besar Beach.

After sprinkled with holy water, the devotees

in trance then regained their consciousness.

Arriving back from melasti procession to the beach, the deities spun clockwise at the boundaries of Sema Agung customary village. Next, the deities were enthroned at Melanting Temple.

“After the deities are enthroned at Melanting Temple, the following day, Wednesday (Apr. 12) the deities dance, and the ritual then comes to an end on the Penampahan Kuningan,” said Jro Mangku Purna.

According to Jro Mangku Purna, after carrying out melasti the tektekan is put at the temple. It is allowed to be taken home by residents after the closing ceremony at the Dalem Penyarikan. Tektekan can also be used for the next year in the same ceremony. But if broken, it can be replaced with the new one by the residents and activated. “In the 1970s, the deities of Dalem Penyarikan performed melasti procession to the beach, while the face of companion is smeared with char.

However, it is rarely done today,” he said.

Jro Mangku Purna also recognized that melasti procession by using tektekan is once abolished due to coinciding with Nyepi celebration. As a result, it brought in plague.

Many plants belonging to residents were attacked by pests. So, the use of tektekan in the melasti procession is held back abruptly and then regularly held every year coinciding with the full moon in the Balinese tenth month. “At that time, our residents immediately held a melasti procession by using tektekan. Thus, the ritual lasted till night,” added Jro Mangku Purna. (kmb)

A corpse of tourist found floating in Medewi waters

NEGARA - The corpse of Mr. X was found floating in the waters of Medewi, Pekutatan, on Wednesday afternoon (Jul. 26). It was found floating in the middle of the sea by a fisherman named Serahadi, 30, from Pesinggahan hamlet, Medewi.

As the information obtained, on Tuesday midnight (Jul. 25) Serahadi was sailing to the waters of Tabanan. Later, the witness began to catch fish and put up his net. On Wednesday morning (Jul. 26) around 08:30, the witness began to pick up the nets installed. Since getting no fish catch, the witness immediately pulled the net and rushed to go home.

At 9:30 when on the way home, the witness Serahadi saw something floating like balloon in the waters of the sea. After being approached, in fact it was a male corpse floating in the sea surrounded by birds.

The witness then tied the corpse with a net strap and dragged it to be brought ashore. After calling the fisherman group leader, Misrawan, on his command the witness was picked up by his four friends to the middle of the sea. Around the Pekutatan waters, the corpse was taken onto a boat by four people namely Lukman, Gunawan, Abdul Rasid and Sanuri. At 15:30, the corpse was evacuated to mainland at Medewi fish landing base (TPI).

After that, a health team from Pekutatan, Made Ardika Adiguna, conducted a checkup. The corpse of Mr. X has the height of 180 cm (in floating condition), crushed condition on the face, bruises at upper part of the left and right hips and chest, reddish fluid getting out of the ears, missing flesh on right thigh and right lower leg measuring about 20 cm around right thigh.

Mr. X’s corpse was wearing a black necklace and a light-blue, long-sleeved surfing suit with the wording ‘Harry Surf’ as well as blue-and-white navy pants. Mr. X’s corpse was subsequently taken to Negara Hospital by an ambulance of Pekutatan health center.

From the results of identification, the corpse originally identified as Mr. X was named Serhii Haveliev, a Ukrainian nationality, with the passport number FA492689. The victim was alleged to drown while surfing.

Chief of Jembrana Police Criminal Investigation Unit, Yusak A Sooai, with permission from Jembrana police chief confirmed the discovery of the corpse. Now, the corpse is still in Negara Hospital while waiting for the family or parties that will take care of the corpse. (kmb)

Hamlet chief of Legian Kaja, Wayan Riasa, confirmed on Tuesday (Jul. 25) about the complaint.

He did not deny if the crowdedness has indeed happened since long time ago. The congestion happening almost every time seems to have caused residents living around the area to get isolated. When just coming out of the house, they encounter traffic jam. Moreover, when coming home from workplace, people need a long time to get home.

“If the traffic jam occurs after office hours, it remains understandable. However, this almost happens every hour, we cannot predict when it happens. In the past, it could still be anticipated because it happened at certain hours,” he concluded.

He disclosed this issue was actually discussed in the hamlet meeting. Results of the meeting with some inputs have also been expressed in a letter having been submitted by local headman. However, until now it is not clear how the follow-up is.

He said the Badung transportation agency had time to come down to location and conduct a survey on traffic conditions.

However, until now there has been no clarity about the result of the survey whether there will be traffic engineering or traffic settings.

“Obviously, the measure to be taken will be able to break down the traffic jam at the road section.

Hopefully, even if there will be a traffic engineering test, it will not affect the traffic having been

smooth,” he hoped.

Chief of the Legian People’s Empowerment Agency (LPM), Ketut Sudana, also conveyed similar opinion. Moreover, according to him, the impact of traffic crowdedness at Double Six intersection also makes hotels complain. It happens because tourists wishing to get out of the hotel to airport are blocked by the jam. “There are even tourists that are forced to rent a motorcycle to break through such crowdedness,” he added.

He admitted to worry if such condition is ignored will have an impact on tourist visits, and the economy of the residents of Legian.

“We expect whatever the solution to overcome the crowdedness will not cause tourists to move from Legian,” he said. (kmb23)

Political crisis grips Sweden as confidence vote looms

STOCKHOLM - A political crisis gripped Sweden on Wednesday after opposition parties called for a no confidence vote they would almost certainly win over a botched outsourcing deal in which sensitive material was transmitted abroad.

The vote, targeting ministers of three departments who failed to raise the alarm over short cuts during implementation of the contract, would undermine the government’s already brittle authority and make fresh elections a distinct possibility.

The minority left-green government said Prime Minister Stefan Lofven would hold a press conference on Thursday at 0800 GMT, without commenting further.

The centre-right opposition is seeking to boot out the infrastructure, defence and interior ministers - respectively Anna Johansson, Peter Hultqvist and Anders Ygeman - for failing to take action during the outsourcing of IT services for the Swedish Transport Agency in 2015.

Lofven admitted on Monday that, as a result of the way the contract was handled, his country and its citizens were exposed to risks by potential leaks of sensitive information.

The government said in 2015 that the contract process - won by

IBM Sweden - was speeded up, bypassing some laws and internal procedures.

IBM Sweden said it never commented on relations with clients.

The centre-right opposition Alliance - comprising the Moderate, Centre, Liberal and Christian Democrat parties - announced earlier on Wednesday it would call the no confidence vote, without specifying when.

“It is obvious the three ministers have neglected their responsibility. They have not taken action to protect Sweden’s safety”, Centre party leader Annie Loof told a news conference.

The legislature is in recess but the opposition parties will submit their motion to the speaker, who will then summon legislators for a vote within 10 days.

Including the nationalist Sweden Democrats, whose leader Jimmie Akesson told Reuters his party would support the motion, the opposition have a majority in parliament, meaning the vote is likely to pass.

BODY BLOW Losing three key ministers would be a further body blow to Lofven’s government, which has already lost votes in parliament.

After the opposition’s budget bill got more support than the government’s in 2014 he called a snap election, which he retracted after a compromise was reached.

“He has shown he can do the unexpected,” said Jonas Hinnfors, political scientist at Gothenburg University, who did not rule out snap elections or the government resigning. “The alternative is to stay on severely wounded, which in itself is very problematic for the government... This is a crisis for the government and the credibility of the prime minister.”

Domestic markets remained unfazed, however, with the crown little changed against the euro.

“The political situation in Sweden generally has a very small effect on both (interest) rates and exchange rates,” said Carl Hammer, economist at SEB. (rtr)

KANDAHAR - Taliban fighters killed 26 soldiers and wounded 13 others in an attack on an army base in the southern province of Kandahar, the defence ministry said on Wednesday, as heavy fighting raged across the country.

Officials said the Taliban had attacked overnight an outpost in Khakriz district, to the north of Kandahar city, seizing the outpost and capturing weapons and vehicles. Troops later recaptured the post.

“The enemy pressure was too heavy,” defence ministry spokesman General Dawlat Waziri said.

The attack came after days of fierce fighting across Afghanistan and underlined the steadily deteriorating security in much of the country, which has also seen a string of high profile attacks in cities including the capital Kabul.

As security has worsened, the Swedish Committee for Afghanistan, which runs medical clinics and educational activities, said it had been forced to close 20 clinics and its health management office in Laghman province, east of Kabul following threats from armed opposition groups.

While the fighting has intensified, the United States, which is expected to send around another 4,000 troops to Afghanistan to bolster its existing training mission, is still to announce its new strategy for the region.

The Taliban, fighting to restore Islamic rule to Afghanistan 16 years after being driven from power by a U.S.-led campaign, controls or contests at least 40 percent of the country, inflicting what U.S. advisers say are unsustainable casualties on Afghan security forces.

In the first 10 months of last year alone, some 6,785 soldiers and police were killed.

On Wednesday, the Taliban’s main spokesman said the insurgents were close to taking Waygal district in the eastern province of Nuristan, a day after they took Jani Kheil district in Paktika province, further to the south.

Over the past week, the insurgents have also taken districts in Ghor province in the west and Faryab in the north, although the defence ministry said government forces had retaken Kohistan district in Faryab.

Kunduz, the northern city which the Taliban captured briefly in 2015 and managed to enter in 2016, has also been under heavy pressure.

U.S. advisers say that Afghan security forces, fighting largely alone since a NATO-led coalition ended its main combat mission in 2014, have made progress but still rely too much on vulnerable checkpoints exposed to Taliban attack. (rtr)

Humble sack turns into Ivory Coast fashion accessory

ABIDJAN - An entrepreneur from Ivory Coast is hoping to score an international fashion hit by recycling the cloth sacks that the country uses to ship cocoa beans around the world.

Liliane Estievenart, 45, hit on the idea of turning the sacks into attractive bags with the stencilled slogan “Produce of Cote d’Ivoire - Cocoa” - a reminder that the West African country is the world’s top producer of the commodity.

Estievenart created her first bag at the request of a clothing manufacturer, and has since gone on to design a range of purses, leathertrimmed valises and other accessories using jute, the material used in the cocoa bags.

In the nine months since she left her old job as a sales associate, she says she has sold at least 600 of the bags as far afield as Gabon, Mauritius, Togo and Ghana. She also has plans to expand.

“There is a high demand

by Ivorians, our brothers in the diaspora”, she said. “I hope one day we distribute everywhere throughout the world.” (rtr)

DENPASAR — The difficulty to dam up drug smuggling also occurs in Indonesia. The international illegal drug trafficking is a commonplace today, and the drug smuggling into Indonesia is committed by mafia taking advantage of seaports and airports. On that account, the authority and the users of transportation services shall participate in the Prevention, Eradication, Abuse and Trafficking of Drugs (P4GN).

This was conveyed by Chief of Bali Police, Dr. Petrus Reinhard Golose, when receiving the visit of the Head of Customs Office for Bali, NTB and NTT Region, Syarif Hidayat, at the Bali police headquarters, Denpasar, on Wednesday (Jul. 26).

The meeting is meant to build cooperation and collaboration between the Bali police and customs in the field of interdiction, especially the airport interdiction, in order to cut the trafficking of the illicit goods.

He asked the customs to more strictly supervise and check every person and goods coming in through the Ngurah Rai Airport, Tuban. If the X-ray examination found any drugs, it is expected to be developed by carrying out delivery controls to reveal the big dealers.

“The drugs coming through Ngurah Rai Airport involve many countries. Definitely it has a large

syndicate. To reveal it, the Bali police as well as the customs and immigration office can make cooperation by establishing Airport Interdiction Taskforce. The personnel are taken from outside the CTOC taskforce,” said police chief.

All parties are expected to work together and not to accentuate to individual institutions. This is based on the existing law and police have no authority at the airport.

“This interdiction is not just a drug problem, but also regarding other hazardous goods such as explosives. However, today we focus more on drugs as being prominent in Bali,” said this graduate of Police Academy of 1988 batch.

In the meantime, Syarif Hidayat conveyed that his office has been doing intensive cooperation with the Bali police’s directorate of special criminal investigation and directorate of drug investigation.

“We are ready to increase the cooperation with airport interdiction whose personnel will consist of special and optional personnel,” he added.

Syarif claimed that lately drug offenders entering the airport are very minimal. Probably, it is inseparable from the possibility of the changes in their smuggling pattern by sea such as the disclosure of a ton of crystal meth from China. (kmb36)

While the Angels were getting ready, the popstar popped backstage to get them all fired up for the show ahead.”(Last year) Lady Gaga came backstage when we were still getting ready and getting our make-up done. And I think I was with (make-up artist) Tom Pecheux, getting my eyeliner finished, and she came backstage and started singing her new song, that we were going to walk to,” Stella recalled to Vogue Australia. “(We were) singing in our pink robes ... and everyone was so happy and singing along. And (Lady Gaga) was hugging us all and it was like a really nice experience.”

The water pump is the property of the Bali-Penida River Agency (BWS) installed to drain water from reservoir to the pipeline leading to residents’ home.

Unfortunately, though having been reported, the water pump machine has not been repaired. As a result, they have to collect rainwater and some purchase mineral water for drinking and cooking.

A local resident, Wayan Pasek, said on Wednesday (Jul. 26) the clean water supply at his village do not experience any problems after the BWS operated the water pump. With the pump, people can get a supply of clean water properly so the difficulty to get water in dry season has been overcome.

Unfortunately, since the past five months, the difficulty to get clean water supply is back to the time before the presence of water pump. People must use rainwater for bathing, washing and toilet (MCK).

Sometimes, the rainwater is also cooked for drinking and cooking. Disruption of this water supply happens because the pump is out of order. “For the time being, we use rainwater because we are still waiting for the repair of the water pump installed by the BWS,” he said.

Headman of Tembok, Tejakula subdistrict, Dewa Komang Yudi Astra, said that since the residents have difficulty to get clean water the village government has been trying to find a way out so that it can be handled as soon as possible. Village government has

reported the pump damage to the BWS as the property owner installed at the village’s reservoir. In addition to reporting, it also had the pump machine immediately repaired, so the water crisis at the village will not last long. However, until now the request has not been acted upon by the BWS. The damage to the pump machine is not repaired because it is still looking for the components.

The component cannot be purchased instantly, so the BWS must purchase it by indent system. “The last information told that to look for the components cannot be done instantly, but must place an order first.

Hopefully, the pump machine in use is easy to find the components, so when getting damage should not long wait like the current condition where residents have not got water for three months,” he said.

Water tank

The clean water crisis experienced by the community of Sembung hamlet, Tembok, is taken seriously by the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of Buleleng. After receiving reports from the village, last Wednesday the BPBD already supplied clean water by using tank truck.

BTR movement cannot be ridden by political interest

DENPASAR - Lately, ahead of the political event in Bali, a number of political elites begin to profit through the issues on rejection against Benoa Bay reclamation plan. To show off that Bali Rejects Reclamation (BTR) movement will not die, on Wednesday (Jul. 26) ForBALI together with the movement of ‘pasubayan or agreement of Bali customary village rejecting Benoa Bay reclamation’ held again a peaceful action.

Located in front of the office of the governor of Bali, this peaceful action showed off that the BTR movement will not be ridden by any political interests including the election of regional leaders.

ForBALI General Coordinator, Wayan Gendo Suardana, said the action is meant to show off the existence that resistance continues to survive, although it has not come down because to take a breath. In addition, Gendo conveyed that the action is also meant to show off people’s movement that is not easily pulled to the left or right for the interests of pragmatic nature. He has long reminded of the entire ranks because the BTR issue will surely be used for their political interests and pragmatic interests to raise electability and popularity.

Moreover, they will not hesitate to be ignorant and claim to reject the reclamation whereas all this time they just keep silent and tend to ignore the people’s movement.

“This also proves that when politicians use BTR as their political issue, this certainly shows the BTR is a very important issue. They understand, the public reason says, the reclamation of Benoa Bay is a bad project. Therefore, they have no option but take this issue to draw people’s vote,” he said.

According to Gendo, such an action is also an at-

tempt to remind if the movement should not be lulled by elite maneuvers, as well as strengthen their confidence that the movement is on the right line, so that politicians are forced to feature this issue.

In the meantime, Coordinator of the agreement of customary village rejecting Benoa Bay reclamation, Wayan Swarsa, revealed the same opinion that the movement is an insistence from the bottom. Moreover today, many parties claim as if they were in the movement of rejecting reclamation with political goals. “We want to clarify that this is a pure movement, a moral movement in the name of morality to preserve, without political interest or even without deals with any party,” he said.

“From the beginning, the pasubayan concept is a moral bond to the motherland. Whoever the candidate that will become real candidates should be able to fight with us, why not. If this time they only express political jargon, we can also be more vigilant,” he concluded.

Swarsa reiterated that BTR movement has not been completed yet. When talking about the pasubayan, until these minutes it does not lead to any gubernatorial candidates because indeed from the beginning the formation is not intended for that. (kmb23)

Culture agency reminds of not restoring carelessly

MANGUPURA - Badung culture agency commences to worry about the rampant temple restoration projects in the region. So far, not a little temples belonging to cultural heritage are in need of preservations. On that account, the Head of the Badung Culture Agency, Ida Bagus Anom Bhasma, reminded the community of Badung of not doing restorations carelessly, especially in the midst of the high number of financial assistance disbursed by local government.

“It (restoration—Ed) is not forbidden. If possible, the temple belonging to historical heritage should be consulted first,” said Anom Bhasma, not long ago. He said his agency has owned the experts from the archaeological institute, preservation of cultural heritage, and so forth. The experts serve as the agent of consultation prior to the repair. “Do not let all the buildings be dismantled just because the regent gives a lot of funds,” he said.

This official from Taman village, Abiansemal, appealed to people that temples associated with historical relics, if damaged, simply repair pursuant to the original style. “If rebuilt, try to make it like the Taman Ayun, for example. DENPASAR - Cyber unit team of Bali police’s directorate of special criminal investigation arrested the owner of Donald Bali account with the initials DIS, 39, near Tabanan police on Friday (Jul. 21). It happened because this restaurant chef in Kuta uploaded 12 videos on YouTube containing hatred and blasphemous utterances.

Chief of Sub-directorate II of Bali Police’s Directorate of Special Criminal Investigation, Nyoman Resa, accompanied by Chief of Cyber Crime Unit, I Wayan Wisnawa Adiputra, said on Wednesday (Jul. 26) the suspect DIS from Jember, East Java, has committed a crime and without the right to disseminate information resulting in the feeling of hatred on ethnic, religion, race and intergroup (SARA). He created and uploaded 12 videos on YouTube social media with the account name of Donald Bali.

Related to the case disclosure, this former chief of Kuta police confirmed that initially there was information from the national police headquarters related to the videos. After that, Wisnawa with

his team and criminal investigation unit of Tabanan police conducted an investigation to collect evidence.

“From the investigation, he obtained the facts that it is true that DIS is the actor and creator of the videos. The videos were uploaded by using hand phone belonging to the suspect. The videos kindled many comments from netizens leading to a conflict,” he said.

The suspect, said Resa, reasoned that he just wanted to express his ideas and criticism. “For example, in the videos the perpetrator questions whether the people asking others to commit suicidal bomb have ever gone to heaven? It is said the suicide could arguably go to heaven,” said the officer.

The suspect started making and uploading the videos from 2017 until the time he was arrested. “We are encouraging people to take advantage of social media for positive things or goodness. Wherever used for negative things, they will be dealt with law enforcement officials,” said Resa. (kmb36)

PARIS - Rihanna met French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday to discuss the pop star’s charity activities in healthcare and education.

The Barbadian singer of hit “Diamonds” founded the Clara Lionel Foundation in 2012, a nonprofit organisation that promotes scholarship projects across the globe.

“We focused on the topic of education from global aspects, and we will make a very big announcement this coming September,” Rihanna told journalists outside the Elysee

palace in Paris after the meeting, without elaborating.

Rihanna’s Twitter account has more than 75 million followers, and she has recently used it to approach other global leaders such as Canada’s Justin Trudeau and Argentina’s Mauricio Macri on education issues. (rtr)

LOS ANGELES - Angelina Jolie has put moviemaking on hold to become a better mom, take cooking classes and do ordinary tasks like picking up dog poop.

In an interview with Vanity Fair released on Wednesday, the actress said life after splitting in September from husband Brad Pitt was focused on looking after her health and her children.

“I actually feel more of a woman because I feel like I’m being smart about my choices, and I’m putting my family first, and I’m in charge of my life and my health. I think that’s what makes a woman complete,” Jolie said.

Her latest film as a director, “First They Killed My Father,” about the Khmer Rouge regime in the 1970s, under which more than 1 million people died, had its premiere in Cambodia in February.

It is due to be released globally and on Netflix in September.

Apart from promoting the film, Jolie said she had no interest in working on another movie right now.

She has primary custody of her six children with Pitt pending a final settlement of their divorce.

“I’m just wanting to make the proper breakfast and keep the house,” she told Vanity Fair.

“That’s my passion. At the request of my kids, I’m taking cooking classes. As I go to sleep at night, I think, ‘Did I do a great job as a mom or was that an average day?’”

“I’ve been trying for nine months to be really good at just being a homemaker and picking up dog poop and cleaning dishes and reading bedtime stories,” she said. “And I’m getting better at all three.”

Jolie, 42, a special envoy for the United Nations refugee agency, said the children had been “very brave” since the split from Pitt.

“They’re six very strong-minded, thoughtful, worldly individuals. I’m very proud of them.

They’ve been very brave. They were very brave,” she said.

Jolie revealed that she had developed hypertension, and Bell’s Palsy - a weakness in facial muscles that can cause one side of the face to droop slightly - since the separation from Pitt, but had recovered thanks to acupuncture. (rtr)

UK’s Prince William steps down from ambulance job to become full-time royal

As well as quitting his air LONDON - Britain’s Prince William will give up his day job on Thursday when he completes his last shift as an air ambu- ambulance job, William is moving with wife Kate, and children lance pilot before focusing full-time on his royal duties.

The 35-year-old prince, the second-in-line to the throne after his father, Charles, announced in January he would quit his role as a pilot with the East Anglia Air Ambulance (EAAA) to take more of the official roles relinquished by Queen Elizabeth who since turning 90 last year has eased up on her workload.

William’s office said the prince would perform a night shift at Cambridge Airport in central England where he has been based since

joining the EAAA in 2015, before posing for a photograph with his colleagues.

“Following on from my time in the military, I have had experiences in this job I will carry with me for the rest of my life, and that will add a valuable perspective to my royal work for decades to come,” he said in January.

William served in Britain’s armed forces from 2006 until 2013, and worked latterly as a search and rescue helicopter pilot.
