R&B star R. Kelly freed on bail, denies sexually abusing children CHICAGO - R&B superstar R. Kelly was freed from jail Monday after posting bail and pleading not guilty to 10 counts of aggravated criminal sex abuse against four victims, three of them minors. The 52-year-old, who did not speak to reporters, was released from custody after spending three nights behind bars during which time his associates and family members worked to gather the $100,000 necessary to bail him out. Hours earlier, Kelly stood in a Chicago courtroom wearing an orange jumpsuit as his lawyer entered a not-guilty plea. The musician had turned himself in three days earlier. The star’s bail had been set at $1 million, of which he was required to pay 10 percent. His lawyer Steve Greenberg -who has called his client’s finances “a mess” -- maintained the charttopper’s innocence. “Mr Kelly’s done absolutely nothing wrong,” he told reporters at the courthouse.
Michael Avenatti, the highprofile lawyer representing at least two of the alleged victims, said his team had turned over a second, 55-minute-long tape to prosecutors that depicts the artist “engaged in illegal sexual assault of a 14-yearold girl.” “The conduct in the tape can be described as nothing short of outrageous and illegal,” the lawyer told reporters. Avenatti earlier this month gave Chicago prosecutors approximately 40 minutes of previously unreleased footage of Kelly allegedly having sex with a teenager. He said his team was in the process of obtaining a third tape of a similar nature, and that additional witnesses had come forward over the weekend. “This reign of abuse and assault by Mr Kelly is about to come to an abrupt and permanent end,” Avenatti said. Dozens buried in Indonesia gold mine collapse
Indonesian rescuers scrambled Wednesday to find dozens buried in the collapse of an illegal gold mine that killed at least three people, the disaster agency said. The effort to save survivors at the remote site on Sulawesi island was hampered by steep terrain and unstable soil conditions after the collapse triggered a landslide Tuesday evening, it said. Three people have been found dead while 14 others were pulled from the rubble alive early on Wednesday, according to officials. “Dozens of people were mining for gold at this location when suddenly beams and supporting boards broke due to unstable soil conditions,” said disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. More than three dozen people may still be trapped at the site in the Bolaang Mongondow region of North Sulawesi, where some five miners were killed in December after an illegal gold mine accident. The mineral-rich Southeast Asian nation has scores of unlicensed mining sites and safety regulations are routinely flouted. Some of the still-buried victims were responding to rescuers’ calls but it was not clear how many were still alive. Ground conditions at the mine were unstable due to the large number of holes dug by the miners, officials said. “We still have hope. When we called them they still responded from down there, asking for help,” local disaster agency official Abdul Muin Paputungan said. “We can’t use heavy machinery because the location is very steep... it could endanger the victims,” Paputungan said. Rescuers were trying to get water to the buried miners but feared a wrong move could make the situation worse. “There are a lot of challenges because the rocks that fell are in a very dangerous position,” Paputungan said. “We’re trying to be extra careful.” Local hospital chief Wahdiana Mantang said nine patients had been released after the accident and several others were being treated for injuries. “They’re suffering from lacerations, gashes and some have broken bones,” she added. Environmentalists called on local officials to enforce regulations and safety measures in response to the accident. “We predicted this was going to happen,” said Theo Runtuwene, a local director for the Indonesian Forum for the Environment. “The area is mountainous and (miners) dug holes there, which is extremely risky... There are dozens of sites in North Sulawesi where the ground is very unstable, especially during the rainy season,” he added. In 2016, 11 miners died after a mudslide engulfed an illegal gold mine in Sumatra’s Jambi province. Study looks at role of opioids in fatal crashes caused the crashes were more likely than those who were not at fault to test positive for prescription opioids (918 versus 549) and alcohol (5,258 versus 1,815). As a sign that the problem has been growing, the proportion of crash initiators with prescription opioids in their system increased from 2 percent in 1993 to 7.1 percent in 2016. Among the 1,467 drivers testing positive for prescription opioids, 32 percent were positive for hydrocodone, 27 percent for morphine, 19 percent for oxycodone, 14 percent for methadone and 9 percent for other prescription opioids. Because of its design, the study can only show an association rather than proof that opioids cause crashes, said Dr. Andrew Stolbach, a medical toxicologist and emergency medicine physician at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Moreover, it does not suggest that people who are taking opioids for chronic pain are having accidents because of the drugs, said Stolbach, also an associate professor of emergency medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. “You can have psychomotor and cognitive impairment in people who are not used to taking them,” he explained. “But there is scientific literature, using driving simulators, for example, that shows that when a person builds up tolerance many

The same is not true for people taking opioids for an acute injury such as a burn or a broken limb, he noted. Dr. Ajay Wasan, who wasn’t involved in the study, questioned its focus on any use of prescription opioids among drivers involved in crashes, describing it as “very misleading, since this is really abuse, not use.” Given that studies have shown that people taking prescription opioids chronically are not impaired when driving, these kinds of accidents, especially those where people drifted out of their lanes, are most likely due to opioid abuse, said Wasan, an anesthesiology professor at the University of Pittsburgh and president elect of the American Academy of Pain Medicine. Moreover, Wasan expects that the number of accidents involving people taking prescription opioids will turn out to have gone down in more recent years because of the decline in the number of prescriptions written for opioids. “This sensationalizes an issue when there is a need for better science and clarity,” Wasan said. COLUMBIA - In fatal two-car crashes, drivers deemed to have caused the wreck were almost twice as likely as those who were not at fault to test positive for opioids, a U.S. study finds. The most common error leading to fatal crashes, whether or not opioids were involved, was drivers veering out of their lanes, according to the results, published last week in JAMA Network Open. “This shows that the ongoing national opioid epidemic has spilled over to our national highway system with deadly consequences,” said study coauthor Dr. Gouhua Li, founding director of the Center for Injury Epidemiology and Prevention at the Mailman School of Public Health of Columbia University. “Drivers who caused the crashes were about twice as likely to have taken prescription opiates as the non-initiators of the crashes.” To take a closer look at the impact of drugs on fatal vehicle crashes, the researchers turned to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System, which is compiled and maintained by the National Center for Statistics and Analysis at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The fatality census keeps detailed data on all motor vehicle crashes that occur on U.S. public roads and result in at least one fatality. The researchers analyzed data from 18,321 fatal two-car crashes. The most common driver error causing those crashes, “failure to keep in lane,” occurred in 7,535 instances, the researchers found. A cure for aging? Hype outpaces reality
MASSACHUSETTS - David Sinclair, a renowned Harvard University geneticist, recently made a startling assertion: Scientific data shows that he has knocked more than two decades off his biological age, 49. What’s his secret? He says his daily regimen includes ingesting a molecule his own research found improved the health and lengthened the life span of mice. Sinclair now boasts online that he has the lung capacity, cholesterol and blood pressure of a young adult and the “heart rate of an athlete.” Despite his enthusiasm, published scientific research has not yet demonstrated that the molecule works in humans as it does in mice. Sinclair, however, has a considerable financial stake in his claims being proven correct, and has lent his scientific prowess to commercializing possible life extension products such as molecules known as “NAD boosters.” NAD stands for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, a key compound in all living creatures. His financial interests include being listed as an inventor on a patent licensed to Elysium Health, a supplement company that sells a NAD booster in pills for $60 a bottle. He’s also an investor in InsideTracker, the company that he says measured his age. Discerning hype from reality in the longevity field has become tougher than ever as reputable scientists such as Sinclair and preeminent institutions like Harvard align themselves with promising but unproven interventions — and at times promote and profit from them. Fueling the excitement, investors pour billions of dollars into the field even as many of the products already on the market face fewer regulations and therefore a lower threshold of proof. “If you say you’re a terrific scientist and you have a treatment for aging, it gets a lot of attention,”
said Jeffrey Flier, a former Harvard Medical School dean who has been critical of the hype. “There is financial incentive and inducement to overpromise before all the research is in.” Elysium, co-founded in 2014 by a prominent MIT scientist to commercialize the molecule nicotinamide riboside, a type of NAD booster, highlights its “exclusive” licensing agreement with Harvard and the Mayo Clinic and Sinclair’s role as an inventor. According to the company’s press release, the agreement is aimed at supplements that slow “aging and age-related diseases.” Further adding scientific gravitas to its brand, the website lists eight Nobel laureates and 19 other prominent scientists who sit on its scientific advisory board. The company also advertises research partnerships with Harvard and British universities Cambridge and Oxford. Some scientists and institutions have grown uneasy with such ties. The Milner Therapeutics Institute at Cambridge University in England announced in 2017 that it would receive funding from Elysium, cementing a research “partnership.” But after hearing complaints from faculty that the institute was associating itself with an unproven supplement, it quietly decided not to renew the funding or the company’s membership to its “innovation” board. “The sale of nutritional supplements of unproven clinical benefit is commonplace,” said Stephen O’Rahilly, the director of Cambridge’s Metabolic Research Laboratories, who applauded his university for reassessing the arrangement. “What is unusual in this case is the extent to which institutions and individuals from the highest levels of the academy have been co-opted to provide scientific credibility for a product whose benefits to human health are unproven.” (net)

They are mostly run by young people generally using social media such as Instagram in their promotion. “At this time, it includes the music industry that widely has used technology so that they can make money. I think the growth of startups in Bali has been very developed among young people. Moreover, they already have their own association, we must develop them,” he explained. NEGARA - A number of traditional fishpond farmers at Tegalbadeng Timur, Negara, have been confused since the last ten years. The fishponds taking advantage of water from the flow of the tributary of Ijogading River do not give the same results as they used to be. Moreover, it tends to get mediocre because the water source of the fishpond is not as good as it used to be. Other than due to accumulating river sedimentation, it is also triggered by plastic waste increasingly inundated. A number of fishpond farmers who are members of the Amerta Segara pond group, Tegalbadeng Timur, stated on Monday (Feb. 25) that even though the conditions are not as good as they once were they still survive developing this traditional fishpond. South Korea’s fertility rate drops below one for first time
SEOUL - South Korea’s fertility rate hit another record low last year, government data showed Wednesday, falling below one for the first time despite a raft of measures to try to reverse one of the world’s lowest birth rates. The country’s fertility rate -the number of children a woman is expected to have in her lifetime -- fell to 0.98 in 2018, far short of the 2.1 needed to maintain population stability. “It is the first time that the figure has dropped below one since Seoul started collecting data in 1970,” Statistics Korea said in a statement. This means the population of the world’s 11th largest economy, currently 51 million, may start sliding before 2028, the year Seoul had forecast as the beginning point for its decline. The figure for 2017, 1.05, was also a record low. Until now, the mortuary of Tabanan Hospital accommodates a total of 11 bodies where two are placed in coffins outside the freezer. Three freezers are filled with two bodies and three other freezers are filled with one body so that there are still quotas for three bodies. According to Agung Putra, for the time being, the quota for body deposit at the hospital is still safe. However, if exceeding quota it is forced to advise the family to leave it at another hospital having similar
services. “We will help find other places like Sanglah Hospital and Mangusada Hospital, Badung,” he said. Since the custody services are not covered by health insurance, this service goes to general payment. The cost to pay for the maintenance of the body is IDR 75,000 per day. Regarding the length of time for the body keeping, according to Agung Putra, most of them waits until the completion of the Panca Wali Krama ceremony at Besakih Temple. “So, they will be deposited for about a month,” he said. Buffett encourages investors to bet on American economy
OMAHA - Billionaire Warren Buffett says the company he built through decades of acquisitions continues to perform well even though he hasn’t found any major deals at attractive prices recently. Buffett released his annual letter to Berkshire Hathaway Inc. shareholders on Saturday. He wrote that investors should continue betting on the American economy because Berkshire has prospered by doing so, but that they shouldn’t forget about the rest of the world. “There are also many other countries around the world that have bright futures. About that, we should rejoice: Americans will be both more prosperous and safer if all nations thrive,” Buffett wrote. “At Berkshire, we hope to invest significant sums across borders.” Buffett’s letter is always well-
read in the business world because of his remarkable track record, his habit of dissecting the economy or other topics and his talent for explaining complicated subjects in plain language. But in recent years he has simplified his letters and focused mostly on Berkshire’s businesses. The sage advice and wit that used to make Buffett’s letters mustread publications is now reserved mostly for the company’s annual meeting and interviews. “To me, it’s becoming less of an event,” Edward Jones analyst Jim Shanahan said of the letter.
Buffett wrote that the two potential successors he promoted last year to oversee most day-to-day operations are doing well, but the 88-year-old tycoon made no mention of retiring. Longtime Berkshire executives Greg Abel and Ajit Jain joined the company’s board last January and took on additional responsibilities. Jain now oversees all of the conglomerate’s insurance businesses while Abel oversees all of the conglomerate’s non-insurance business operations. “These moves were overdue,” Buffett said. “Berkshire is now far better managed than when I alone was supervising operations. Ajit and Greg have rare talents, and Berkshire blood flows through their veins.” Buffett wrote that Berkshire continues to hold roughly $130
billion in cash and short-term investments because he hasn’t found any reasonably-priced acquisitions in recent years, so he’ll likely continue investing more in stocks. “Prices are sky-high for businesses possessing decent long-term prospects,” he wrote. Shanahan, the Edward Jones analyst, said he was disappointed that Berkshire didn’t use more of its cash to repurchase its own shares or invest in other stocks, especially when the market declined near the end of the year. Berkshire reported a $4 billion profit for last year as most of its eclectic mix of businesses — including BNSF railroad, Geico insurance and several large utilities — performed well. But that was significantly lower than the previous
year $45 billion because Berkshire had to write down the paper value of many of its stock holdings. Still, Andy Kilpatrick said the results were better than he expected. “Berkshire’s operating businesses are doing great,” said Kilpatrick, a retired stockbroker and author who wrote “Of Permanent Value: The Story of Warren Buffett.” ‘’I’m glad to see there’s no talk of retirement.” Berkshire Hathaway Inc. owns more than 90 companies, including the railroad and clothing, furniture and jewelry businesses. Malaysia’s flying car plan jets into controversy
KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia plans to launch a flying car, a minister has said, sparking a flood of mockery in a country with a chequered history when it comes to automotive projects. The prototype of the vehicle, which uses local technology, will be unveiled later this year, said Entrepreneur Development Minister Redzuan Mohamad Yusof, according to state news agency Bernama. The vehicle cost about one million ringgit ($245,000) to develop and will fly at low altitudes, he said Tuesday, without revealing any more details. Previous car projects in Malaysia have not always met with great success -- the country started producing Protons in the 1980s but they are routinely criticised for unimaginative models and shoddy workmanship, and their popularity has steadily fallen. For many people, the flying car project was just another harebrained scheme cooked up by foolish politicians. “Words fail me. I have never
read so much stupidity in my life,” one commentator wrote online. Aman Shah posted on Facebook: “How come this idiot is selected as a minister? Solve the public transport problem first, instead of inventing flying car.” There have been several attempts around the world to develop flying cars, such as the Transition made by US firm Terrafugia and the AeroMobil, produced in Slovakia. Both have taken years and a lot of money to develop, and are yet to go on sale. Some questioned the wisdom of trying to develop a flying vehicle in Malaysia with the national car industry already facing problems. “We cannot even promote hybrid and electric car properly and sell them at affordable price, now talking about flying cars. What a joke,” said one comment. BANGLI - Temples in Bali are predominantly as old as the hills. With their ornate details of the classic Balinese architecture that is filled with spiritual energy, they are certainly on a different scale. Besakih Temple is known to be one of the oldest and most significant temples in the island. But there exists a beautiful ancient temple in Bangli called Puncak Penulisan Temple. Also known as the authentic temple of the Bali Aga or the indigenous people of Bali, this temple preserves relics that have existed since the era of megalithic culture. This makes Puncak Penulisan Temple one of the oldest Hindu temples in Bali. Puncak Penulisan Temple is situated at Sukawana Village of Kintamani in Bangli. Another name for this temple is Tegeh Kahuripan Temple, which can be interpreted as a place of high and firm life. Located at the top of the hill at an altitude of 1.7m above sea level, a slight touch of chill air is filled in the area. From the outer courtyard of Puncak Penulisan Temple, relics from the past can be seen entrancingly adorned. To get to the temple,
you must climb several steep stairs or you can simply pass from the back road of the temple that will lead you to the front yard of Puncak Penulisan. In the past, this temple was used as a place to do meditation and ascetic yoga by the Kings. The calm and pleasant atmosphere surrounding the temple makes it a perfectly ideal place to meditate. I was captivated by the splendor of the temple, and its indescribable aura that made me feel at peace. The society also believes that this temple is a place of worship dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple has a very high historical value as proven by its ancient relics from the megalithic era. This is one of the main reasons that draws both locals and tourists to visit this time-honoured place. The major megalithic objects from the year 300 AD include stones and statues. Other relics that can be found in the temple are from the 10th century that persisted until the time of Majapahit in 1343 AD. And if you must know, the Puncak Penulisan site is located inside the protected
forest area. Another thing that distinguish Puncak Penulisan Temple from other temples in Bali is the absence of pelinggih (worship building) of padmasana and meru. In the courtyard, there is a big stone that is held holy, which is believed to be the seat of Akasa who descended from the sky. It was then used as a medium of worship to the ancestors. The entire architecture of the temple is extremely unique. The structure of the building symbolises the concept of Mount Suci that resembles a hill or pyramid. Besides that, this temple adheres to the concept of Sapta Loka. In other words, it is a temple that has seven levels, and each level is connected by a staircase. Puncak Penulisan Temple is exceptionally sacred, and this is especially true among the people of Bali Aga. Part of the beauty of the place is continuing history. It’s always fascinating to follow and learn about the history behind the existing ancient sites. But of course, nothing ever beats actually paying the place a visit and seeing the actual thing. MANILA - NBA star Jordan Clarkson is stoking Philippine fans’ clamour to allow him to play in this year’s World Cup as their team seeks to hurdle FIBA’s eligibility rules. The Philippine Basketball Federation (SBP) is appealing to basketball’s world-governing body to recognise Clarkson as a Filipino citizen, allowing him to play for Gilas Pilipinas who won a World Cup berth last weekend. The Filipino-American Cleveland Cavaliers guard on Tuesday congratulated Gilas and expressed hope of joining the team again after carrying the flag for the Philippines at last year’s Asian Games. “Such a honor for the country, qualifying for the world cup, so hyped!!! hope to see you guys in china!!!,” the 26-year-old said in an Instagram post sharing a photo of himself wearing the Philippines team jersey. Basketball is a virtual religion in the Southeast Asian nation and enthusiastic fans were quick to comment on the post with their approval using the hashtag “#LetJordanPlay”. Unlike the Asian Games, the World Cup operates under FIBA rules which could classify Clarkson as a “naturalised” player. FIBA restricts each team to one naturalised player. This means the Philippines would have to choose between Clarkson and ex-Brooklyn Nets centre Andray Blatche, who acquired Filipino
nationality by naturalisation. Philippine basketball boss Al Panlilio told AFP the federation wanted FIBA to recognise that Clarkson was a Filipino by blood under local laws, adding he obtained his Filipino passport after the age 16. The Cavaliers, who currently have the third-worst record in the 20182019 season, are expected to miss this year’s playoffs. “It’s perfect timing because the NBA is on break. Definitely Jordan will help us a lot,” Panlilio told AFP. Blatche, who led the Gilas victory over Kazakhstan in Astana on Sunday to secure World Cup qualification, hailed the possibility of teaming up with Clarkson at the August 31-September 15 tournament to be hosted by China. “If we can get him, that would be huge. If we were to have me and him together with the team we have now, we can definitely go and make some noise, make some wins,” Blatche told Sports5 television on Wednesday. Sports fans and analysts have said a Clarkson-Blatche combination in the World Cup would be a “dream team” for Gilas, ranked 31st in the world. TOKYO - Japanese sumo officials have introduced a crackdown on beards, calling them “indecent” and telling wrestlers they must look spick and span during competitions under strict, new rules on personal grooming. The draconian whisker ban is part of fresh regulations also barring tattoos and long nails, a sumo spokesman told AFP on Wednesday, as the authorities look to clean up the image of Japan’s roly-poly sport. “It was stipulated that items such as long nails, tattoos and beards grown out of an excessive wish for good luck shall be banned,” said the spokesman for the Japan Sumo Association (JSA). Superstitious sumo wrestlers often decline to shave their beards during tournaments as they believe it brings them luck, but the sumo association have decided they will no longer tolerate such slovenliness. “Wrestlers must preserve their personal hygiene,” JSA elder Ogu-
ruma told reporters after a board meeting. “Officials and referees will be on the lookout. Pep Guardiola has apologised if the early announcement of his arrival at Manchester City in 2016 destabilised his predecessor Manuel Pellegrini’s attempt to win the quadruple. Pellegrini will bring his West Ham side to Manchester on Wednesday, making his first visit to the Etihad for a match since City sacked him to make space for Guardiola. The Chilean confirmed in February 2016, three months before his departure, that he was being replaced, and City, who were still in contention to win four trophies at that point, picked up only seven points from the seven league matches that followed. They did win the League Cup that season, and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League, but needed a draw at Swansea on the final day of the campaign to secure fourth place. Pellegrini acknowledged in May 2016 that his decision to announce his departure contributed to City’s subsequent loss of form, saying that “something was broken in that moment”. Guardiola, who joined City from Bayern Munich, said he was unaware that his impending arrival caused such instability. “I don’t know. He can answer that. I was in Munich, so I don’t know what happened in the locker room and what the reason why is,” he said. “But if it was the reason -- I think nobody can know it -- I’m sorry and I apologise. BANGLI - Temples in Bali are predominantly as old as the hills. With their ornate details of the classic Balinese architecture that is filled with spiritual energy, they are certainly on a different scale. Besakih Temple is known to be one of the oldest and most significant temples in the island. But there exists a beautiful ancient temple in Bangli called Puncak Penulisan Temple. Also known as the authentic temple of the Bali Aga or the indigenous people of Bali, this temple preserves relics that have existed since the era of megalithic culture. This makes Puncak Penulisan Temple one of the oldest Hindu temples in Bali. Puncak Penulisan Temple is situated at Sukawana Village of Kintamani in Bangli. Another name for this temple is Tegeh Kahuripan Temple, which can be interpreted as a place of high and firm life. Located at the top of the hill at an altitude of 1.7m above sea level, a slight touch of chill air is filled in the area. From the outer courtyard of Puncak Penulisan Temple, relics from the past can be seen entrancingly adorned. To get to the temple,
you must climb several steep stairs or you can simply pass from the back road of the temple that will lead you to the front yard of Puncak Penulisan. In the past, this temple was used as a place to do meditation and ascetic yoga by the Kings. The calm and pleasant atmosphere surrounding the temple makes it a perfectly ideal place to meditate. I was captivated by the splendor of the temple, and its indescribable aura that made me feel at peace. The society also believes that this temple is a place of worship dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple has a very high historical value as proven by its ancient relics from the megalithic era. This is one of the main reasons that draws both locals and tourists to visit this time-honoured place. The major megalithic objects from the year 300 AD include stones and statues. Other relics that can be found in the temple are from the 10th century that persisted until the time of Majapahit in 1343 AD. And if you must know, the Puncak Penulisan site is located inside the protected
forest area. Another thing that distinguish Puncak Penulisan Temple from other temples in Bali is the absence of pelinggih (worship building) of padmasana and meru. In the courtyard, there is a big stone that is held holy, which is believed to be the seat of Akasa who descended from the sky. It was then used as a medium of worship to the ancestors. The entire architecture of the temple is extremely unique. The structure of the building symbolises the concept of Mount Suci that resembles a hill or pyramid. Besides that, this temple adheres to the concept of Sapta Loka. In other words, it is a temple that has seven levels, and each level is connected by a staircase. Puncak Penulisan Temple is exceptionally sacred, and this is especially true among the people of Bali Aga. Part of the beauty of the place is continuing history. It’s always fascinating to follow and learn about the history behind the existing ancient sites. But of course, nothing ever beats actually paying the place a visit and seeing the actual thing. TOKYO - Japanese sumo officials have introduced a crackdown on beards, calling them “indecent” and telling wrestlers they must look spick and span during competitions under strict, new rules on personal grooming. The draconian whisker ban is part of fresh regulations also barring tattoos and long nails, a sumo spokesman told AFP on Wednesday, as the authorities look to clean up the image of Japan’s roly-poly sport. “It was stipulated that items such as long nails, tattoos and beards grown out of an excessive wish for good luck shall be banned,” said the spokesman for the Japan Sumo Association (JSA). Superstitious sumo wrestlers often decline to shave their beards during tournaments as they believe it brings them luck, but the sumo association have decided they will no longer tolerate such slovenliness. “Wrestlers must preserve their personal hygiene,” JSA elder Ogu-

Malaysia’s flying car plan jets into controversy
KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia plans to launch a flying car, a minister has said, sparking a flood of mockery in a country with a chequered history when it comes to automotive projects. The prototype of the vehicle, which uses local technology, will be unveiled later this year, said Entrepreneur Development Minister Redzuan Mohamad Yusof, according to state news agency Bernama. The vehicle cost about one million ringgit ($245,000) to develop and will fly at low altitudes, he said Tuesday, without revealing any more details. Previous car projects in Malaysia have not always met with great success -- the country started producing Protons in the 1980s but they are routinely criticised for unimaginative models and shoddy workmanship, and their popularity has steadily fallen. For many people, the flying car project was just another harebrained scheme cooked up by foolish politicians. “Words fail me. I have never
read so much stupidity in my life,” one commentator wrote online. Aman Shah posted on Facebook: “How come this idiot is selected as a minister? Buffett encourages investors to bet on American economy
OMAHA - Billionaire Warren Buffett says the company he built through decades of acquisitions continues to perform well even though he hasn’t found any major deals at attractive prices recently. Buffett released his annual letter to Berkshire Hathaway Inc. shareholders on Saturday. He wrote that investors should continue betting on the American economy because Berkshire has prospered by doing so, but that they shouldn’t forget about the rest of the world. “There are also many other countries around the world that have bright futures. About that, we should rejoice: Americans will be both more prosperous and safer if all nations thrive,” Buffett wrote. “At Berkshire, we hope to invest significant sums across borders.” Buffett’s letter is always well-
read in the business world because of his remarkable track record, his habit of dissecting the economy or other topics and his talent for explaining complicated subjects in plain language. But in recent years he has simplified his letters and focused mostly on Berkshire’s businesses. The sage advice and wit that used to make Buffett’s letters mustread publications is now reserved mostly for the company’s annual meeting and interviews. “To me, it’s becoming less of an event,” Edward Jones analyst Jim Shanahan said of the letter.
Buffett wrote that the two potential successors he promoted last year to oversee most day-to-day operations are doing well, but the 88-year-old tycoon made no mention of retiring. Longtime Berkshire executives Greg Abel and Ajit Jain joined the company’s board last January and took on additional responsibilities. Jain now oversees all of the conglomerate’s insurance businesses while Abel oversees all of the conglomerate’s non-insurance business operations. “These moves were overdue,” Buffett said. “Berkshire is now far better managed than when I alone was supervising operations. Ajit and Greg have rare talents, and Berkshire blood flows through their veins.” Buffett wrote that Berkshire continues to hold roughly $130
billion in cash and short-term investments because he hasn’t found any reasonably-priced acquisitions in recent years, so he’ll likely continue investing more in stocks. “Prices are sky-high for businesses possessing decent long-term prospects,” he wrote. Shanahan, the Edward Jones analyst, said he was disappointed that Berkshire didn’t use more of its cash to repurchase its own shares or invest in other stocks, especially when the market declined near the end of the year. Berkshire reported a $4 billion profit for last year as most of its eclectic mix of businesses — including BNSF railroad, Geico insurance and several large utilities — performed well. But that was significantly lower than the previous
year $45 billion because Berkshire had to write down the paper value of many of its stock holdings. Still, Andy Kilpatrick said the results were better than he expected. “Berkshire’s operating businesses are doing great,” said Kilpatrick, a retired stockbroker and author who wrote “Of Permanent Value: The Story of Warren Buffett.” ‘’I’m glad to see there’s no talk of retirement.” Berkshire Hathaway Inc. owns more than 90 companies, including the railroad and clothing, furniture and jewelry businesses. Fishpond farmers at Tegalbadeng Timur confused
River alleged to get polluted and have sedimentation
NEGARA - A number of traditional fishpond farmers at Tegalbadeng Timur, Negara, have been confused since the last ten years. The fishponds taking advantage of water from the flow of the tributary of Ijogading River do not give the same results as they used to be. Moreover, it tends to get mediocre because the water source of the fishpond is not as good as it used to be. Other than due to accumulating river sedimentation, it is also triggered by plastic waste increasingly inundated. A number of fishpond farmers who are members of the Amerta Segara pond group, Tegalbadeng Timur, stated on Monday (Feb. 25) that even though the conditions are not as good as they once were they still survive developing this traditional fishpond. In total, there are currently around 24 farmers and all of them are still active both by on leased farmland and own land. “All fishponds are located along this canal, and brackish water sources depend on this river,” said Ketut Sudarma, 62, one of the fishpond farmers. Due to being located farthest from the sea, this fishpond group also gets the smallest seawater content. Even if they make a borehole, the water obtained will be fresh water. So, fishpond farmers are very dependent on the river flow. “Condition of the river is not what it

South Korea’s fertility rate drops below one for first time
SEOUL - South Korea’s fertility rate hit another record low last year, government data showed Wednesday, falling below one for the first time despite a raft of measures to try to reverse one of the world’s lowest birth rates. The country’s fertility rate -the number of children a woman is expected to have in her lifetime -- fell to 0.98 in 2018, far short of the 2.1 needed to maintain population stability. “It is the first time that the figure has dropped below one since Seoul started collecting data in 1970,” Statistics Korea said in a statement. This means the population of the world’s 11th largest economy, currently 51 million, may start sliding before 2028, the year Seoul had forecast as the beginning point for its decline. The figure for 2017, 1.05, was also a record low. The South Korean government has spent a whopping 135 trillion won ($120 billion) since 2005 in a desperate attempt to boost the birth rate, providing child subsidies to parents and launching campaigns to encourage young Koreans to wed and have children, without success. Many experts cite reasons

If the two coffins outside the freezer are full, and there are deposits of other bodies, then the six freezers are refilled so that they
can store two bodies. The filling procedures remain by giving an explanation to the family. Until now, the mortuary of Tabanan Hospital accommodates a total of 11 bodies where two are placed in coffins outside the freezer. Three freezers are filled with two bodies and three other freezers are filled with one body so that there are still quotas for three bodies. According to Agung Putra, for the time being, the quota for body deposit at the hospital is still safe. However, if exceeding quota it is forced to advise the family to leave it at another hospital having similar
services. “We will help find other places like Sanglah Hospital and Mangusada Hospital, Badung,” he said. Since the custody services are not covered by health insurance, this service goes to general payment. The cost to pay for the maintenance of the body is IDR 75,000 per day. Regarding the length of time for the body keeping, according to Agung Putra, most of them waits until the completion of the Panca Wali Krama ceremony at Besakih Temple. “So, they will be deposited for about a month,” he said. Study looks at role of opioids in fatal crashes caused the crashes were more likely than those who were not at fault to test positive for prescription opioids (918 versus 549) and alcohol (5,258 versus 1,815). As a sign that the problem has been growing, the proportion of crash initiators with prescription opioids in their system increased from 2 percent in 1993 to 7.1 percent in 2016. Among the 1,467 drivers testing positive for prescription opioids, 32 percent were positive for hydrocodone, 27 percent for morphine, 19 percent for oxycodone, 14 percent for methadone and 9 percent for other prescription opioids. Because of its design, the study can only show an association rather than proof that opioids cause crashes, said Dr. Andrew Stolbach, a medical toxicologist and emergency medicine physician at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Moreover, it does not suggest that people who are taking opioids for chronic pain are having accidents because of the drugs, said Stolbach, also an associate professor of emergency medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. “You can have psychomotor and cognitive impairment in people who are not used to taking them,” he explained. “But there is scientific literature, using driving simulators, for example, that shows that when a person builds up tolerance many

of the psychomotor and cognitive effects that would affect driving are not detected. And that suggests that people on a chronic and stable opioid prescription can drive safely,” Stolbach said. The same is not true for people taking opioids for an acute injury such as a burn or a broken limb, he noted. Dr. Ajay Wasan, who wasn’t involved in the study, questioned its focus on any use of prescription opioids among drivers involved in crashes, describing it as “very misleading, since this is really abuse, not use.” Given that studies have shown that people taking prescription opioids chronically are not impaired when driving, these kinds of accidents, especially those where people drifted out of their lanes, are most likely due to opioid abuse, said Wasan, an anesthesiology professor at the University of Pittsburgh and president elect of the American Academy of Pain Medicine. COLUMBIA - In fatal two-car crashes, drivers deemed to have caused the wreck were almost twice as likely as those who were not at fault to test positive for opioids, a U.S. study finds. The most common error leading to fatal crashes, whether or not opioids were involved, was drivers veering out of their lanes, according to the results, published last week in JAMA Network Open. “This shows that the ongoing national opioid epidemic has spilled over to our national highway system with deadly consequences,” said study coauthor Dr. Gouhua Li, founding director of the Center for Injury Epidemiology and Prevention at the Mailman School of Public Health of Columbia University. “Drivers who caused the crashes were about twice as likely to have taken prescription opiates as the non-initiators of the crashes.” To take a closer look at the impact of drugs on fatal vehicle crashes, the researchers turned to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System, which is compiled and maintained by the National Center for Statistics and Analysis at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The fatality census keeps detailed data on all motor vehicle crashes that occur on U.S. public roads and result in at least one fatality. The researchers analyzed data from 18,321 fatal two-car crashes. The most common driver error causing those crashes, “failure to keep in lane,” occurred in 7,535 instances, the researchers found. A cure for aging? Hype outpaces reality
MASSACHUSETTS - David Sinclair, a renowned Harvard University geneticist, recently made a startling assertion: Scientific data shows that he has knocked more than two decades off his biological age, 49. What’s his secret? He says his daily regimen includes ingesting a molecule his own research found improved the health and lengthened the life span of mice. Sinclair now boasts online that he has the lung capacity, cholesterol and blood pressure of a young adult and the “heart rate of an athlete.” Despite his enthusiasm, published scientific research has not yet demonstrated that the molecule works in humans as it does in mice. Sinclair, however, has a considerable financial stake in his claims being proven correct, and has lent his scientific prowess to commercializing possible life extension products such as molecules known as “NAD boosters.” NAD stands for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, a key compound in all living creatures. His financial interests include being listed as an inventor on a patent licensed to Elysium Health, a supplement company that sells a NAD booster in pills for $60 a bottle. He’s also an investor in InsideTracker, the company that he says measured his age. Discerning hype from reality in the longevity field has become tougher than ever as reputable scientists such as Sinclair and preeminent institutions like Harvard align themselves with promising but unproven interventions — and at times promote and profit from them. Fueling the excitement, investors pour billions of dollars into the field even as many of the products already on the market face fewer regulations and therefore a lower threshold of proof. “If you say you’re a terrific scientist and you have a treatment for aging, it gets a lot of attention,”
said Jeffrey Flier, a former Harvard Medical School dean who has been critical of the hype. “There is financial incentive and inducement to overpromise before all the research is in.” Elysium, co-founded in 2014 by a prominent MIT scientist to commercialize the molecule nicotinamide riboside, a type of NAD booster, highlights its “exclusive” licensing agreement with Harvard and the Mayo Clinic and Sinclair’s role as an inventor. According to the company’s press release, the agreement is aimed at supplements that slow “aging and age-related diseases.” Further adding scientific gravitas to its brand, the website lists eight Nobel laureates and 19 other prominent scientists who sit on its scientific advisory board. The company also advertises research partnerships with Harvard and British universities Cambridge and Oxford. Some scientists and institutions have grown uneasy with such ties. The Milner Therapeutics Institute at Cambridge University in England announced in 2017 that it would receive funding from Elysium, cementing a research “partnership.” But after hearing complaints from faculty that the institute was associating itself with an unproven supplement, it quietly decided not to renew the funding or the company’s membership to its “innovation” board. “The sale of nutritional supplements of unproven clinical benefit is commonplace,” said Stephen O’Rahilly, the director of Cambridge’s Metabolic Research Laboratories, who applauded his university for reassessing the arrangement. “What is unusual in this case is the extent to which institutions and individuals from the highest levels of the academy have been co-opted to provide scientific credibility for a product whose benefits to human health are unproven.” (net)

R&B star R. Kelly freed on bail, denies sexually abusing children CHICAGO - R&B superstar R. Kelly was freed from jail Monday after posting bail and pleading not guilty to 10 counts of aggravated criminal sex abuse against four victims, three of them minors. The 52-year-old, who did not speak to reporters, was released from custody after spending three nights behind bars during which time his associates and family members worked to gather the $100,000 necessary to bail him out. Hours earlier, Kelly stood in a Chicago courtroom wearing an orange jumpsuit as his lawyer entered a not-guilty plea. The musician had turned himself in three days earlier. The star’s bail had been set at $1 million, of which he was required to pay 10 percent. His lawyer Steve Greenberg -who has called his client’s finances “a mess” -- maintained the charttopper’s innocence. “Mr Kelly’s done absolutely nothing wrong,” he told reporters at the courthouse.
Michael Avenatti, the highprofile lawyer representing at least two of the alleged victims, said his team had turned over a second, 55-minute-long tape to prosecutors that depicts the artist “engaged in illegal sexual assault of a 14-yearold girl.” “The conduct in the tape can be described as nothing short of outrageous and illegal,” the lawyer told reporters. Avenatti earlier this month gave Chicago prosecutors approximately 40 minutes of previously unreleased footage of Kelly allegedly having sex with a teenager. He said his team was in the process of obtaining a third tape of a similar nature, and that additional witnesses had come forward over the weekend. “This reign of abuse and assault by Mr Kelly is about to come to an abrupt and permanent end,” Avenatti said. Dozens buried in Indonesia gold mine collapse
Indonesian rescuers scrambled Wednesday to find dozens buried in the collapse of an illegal gold mine that killed at least three people, the disaster agency said. The effort to save survivors at the remote site on Sulawesi island was hampered by steep terrain and unstable soil conditions after the collapse triggered a landslide Tuesday evening, it said. Three people have been found dead while 14 others were pulled from the rubble alive early on Wednesday, according to officials. “Dozens of people were mining for gold at this location when suddenly beams and supporting boards broke due to unstable soil conditions,” said disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. More than three dozen people may still be trapped at the site in the Bolaang Mongondow region of North Sulawesi, where some five miners were killed in December after an illegal gold mine accident. The mineral-rich Southeast Asian nation has scores of unlicensed mining sites and safety regulations are routinely flouted. Some of the still-buried victims were responding to rescuers’ calls but it was not clear how many were still alive. Ground conditions at the mine were unstable due to the large number of holes dug by the miners, officials said. “We still have hope. When we called them they still responded from down there, asking for help,” local disaster agency official Abdul Muin Paputungan said. “We can’t use heavy machinery because the location is very steep... it could endanger the victims,” Paputungan said. Rescuers were trying to get water to the buried miners but feared a wrong move could make the situation worse. “There are a lot of challenges because the rocks that fell are in a very dangerous position,” Paputungan said. “We’re trying to be extra careful.” Local hospital chief Wahdiana Mantang said nine patients had been released after the accident and several others were being treated for injuries. “They’re suffering from lacerations, gashes and some have broken bones,” she added. Environmentalists called on local officials to enforce regulations and safety measures in response to the accident. “We predicted this was going to happen,” said Theo Runtuwene, a local director for the Indonesian Forum for the Environment. “The area is mountainous and (miners) dug holes there, which is extremely risky... There are dozens of sites in North Sulawesi where the ground is very unstable, especially during the rainy season,” he added. In 2016, 11 miners died after a mudslide engulfed an illegal gold mine in Sumatra’s Jambi province.
