US rapper Nelly asks for British woman’s rape claim to be dismissed THE rapper Nelly is asking a US court to dismiss a British woman’s lawsuit claiming he sexually assaulted her after a concert.

The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has accused the US artist of targeting her in a dressing room at the Cliffs Pavilion in Essex in December 2017.

A federal lawsuit was filed in the 44-year-old rapper’s hometown St Louis, Missouri, in November.

Nelly, whose real name is Cornell Haynes Jr, has not been criminally charged and denies the allegations.

The woman is identified only as Jane Doe in the lawsuit.

Scott Rosenblum, Nelly’s lawyer, filed a response on Thursday.

He argued the woman should not be allowed to remain anonymous and “avoid public scrutiny”.

The woman alleges she paid to

have her photo taken with the rapper after the concert before he took her to a separate room and sexually assaulted her.

Her lawyer Karen Koehler said the woman reported the incident to police more than a year ago and she believes the investigation is ongoing.

Mr Rosenblum argued a “cloak of anonymity” for the accuser invites people with personal vendettas “to use the federal court system as a tool to inflict calculated harm against others’ reputations” while protecting themselves from scrutiny “that false accusations properly risk and invite”. The lawsuit is the second such case filed against the rapper.

GAME Of Thrones star Maisie Williams has admitted she doesn’t think anyone will be satisfied when the show finally ends. Williams, 21, who has grown up playing Arya Stark, told Sky News that fans just don’t want it to end but for her “it’s the right time” for it to finish.

Williams spoke to students at Birmingham University about her new app, Daisie, which is “a platform for artists to be able to dis-

cover one another and collaborate with up-and-coming projects they may have”.

Williams wants the app to make it easier for young people to break into an “industry that’s so fickle” and which doesn’t reward talent fairly. “As an actor I reap all the benefits from Game of Thrones, I didn’t write any of it, I’m not HBO, I’m just one actor,” she said. (net)

Brazil dam disaster leaves 34 dead, hundreds missing

Thirty-four people were confirmed dead and nearly 300 missing Saturday, with hopes fading of them being found alive, after a dam collapsed at a mine in southeast Brazil.

The disaster struck Friday at the Vale mine near the city of Belo Horizonte in Minas Gerais state, spewing millions of tons of muddy sludge across the facility and down towards farmland alongside the nearby town of Brumadinho.

Dozens of helicopters were used in the rescue operation Saturday because the released mud engulfed buildings, vehicles and roads with a deep, treacherous layer.

Rescue officials announced the death toll had more than tripled through the day as more and more

bodies were pulled from the mud.

By the last count, nearly 300 people were missing, virtually all of them mine workers listed

by Vale.

Among the more than 170 survivors rescued, 23 were hospitalized with injuries. Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro flew over the devastated zone, later tweeting that it was “difficult to not be emotional before this scene.”

All was being done to care for survivors and “determine the facts, to demand justice and prevent new

tragedies,” he added.

The military said it was deploying 1,000 troops, including sniffer dogs, to the affected zone under orders from the president.

The disaster was the first big emergency faced by Bolsonaro and his government since he took office in early January, and perhaps one of the biggest disasters in Brazil’s history.

- Vale shares plunge Vale has been shaken by the disaster, the second in three years it has suffered in the same state.

Workers at its mine had been lunching in an administrative area Friday when they were sud-

denly engulfed by millions of tons of muddy trailings -- a waste byproduct of the iron-ore mining operations.

The ruptured dam, 42 years old and 282 feet (86 meters) high, had been in the process of being decommissioned, and Vale said it had recently passed structural safety tests.

After overflowing a second dam, the vast muddy mass barreled down toward Brumadinho, population 39,000, but only glanced along it before spearing its way through vegetation and farmland, smashing houses and swallowing tractors and roads in its way.

and Minas Gerais Governor Romeu Zema both expressed pessimism, warning the toll could rise. “From now, the odds are minimal (to find more people alive) and it is most likely we will recover only bodies,” Zema told reporters late Friday. In Rio, Schvartsman spoke of a “human tragedy.”

Pattern of waste transportation changed

SINCE the beginning of 2019, the pattern of waste management in Denpasar has undergone significant changes, especially in taking garbage from residents. If previously it was made a synergy between the waste management organization and the Denpasar Environment and Sanitation Agency (DLHK), today this no longer continues.

All waste of the community becomes the responsibility of selfmanagement party at each hamlet.

The waste management officer is in charge of transporting garbage to the nearest temporary waste disposal site. Meanwhile, to transport from temporary disposal site to Suwung Landfill becomes the authority of the DLHK. Head of the DLHK Denpasar, I Ketut Wisada, when met recently said the measure is an effort to build an integrated waste management system. On that account, now the formation of self-managed waste groups in Denpasar continues to be

maximized. In collaboration with the village authority, it is expected to be able to build a system of integrated waste management.

Wisada said that based on Denpasar Mayoral Regulation No.11/2016, the Procedure for Waste Management and Disposal in Denpasar City mandates the waste management in the community should be carried out by waste self-managed groups under coordination of the village authority. Thus, the handling of waste starting from the upstream can provide education for community about the sorting, management and

utilization of waste.

“Proper governance can definitely reduce the volume of waste going to landfill, where inorganic ones can be sorted and saved in waste banks and organic ones can be used for composting,” he explained.

Currently, in Denpasar City there are at least 171 waste management groups that manage waste directly in the community and provide education about waste sorting. Nevertheless, some regions are still requesting assistance regarding the transportation of this roadside waste.

Based on data of the Denpasar Environment and Sanitation Agen-

cy on Thursday (Dec. 27), the volume of garbage increased after the two holidays reaching 60 percent, around 1,500 tons during Penampahan Galungan, Galungan and Umanis Galungan. This number has increased by around 600 tons from usual days, reaching 900 tons.

Regarding the volume of waste, Wisada said there was an increase.

On a normal day, it reached 900 tons, while on religious holidays increased significantly reaching 1,500 tons per day. This amount of waste is handled by maximizing the available officers. At present, a total of 1,459 sanitation staff are alerted with 49 garbage trucks in each sub-district and village.

Meanwhile, Division Head of Waste Management and Hazardous Substance Handling (B3) at

the DLHK Denpasar, I Ketut Adi Wiguna, acknowledged there are a number of things needed to be conveyed to the public regarding the changes in this waste management system. One of the frequently asked questions by the public is regarding double payments. There is payment of garbage charged in the bill of water subscription of PDAM for those whose garbage is taken by the DLHK. However, if it is currently managed by the hamlet or self-managed party, the payment will be made directly by each self-managed officer. “This can be reported to each headman to be further submitted to DLHK. Our task in the DLHK will revoke payments in the bill of the PDAM,” said Adi Wiguna when met at Kreneng Market. (ara)

To reduce plastic waste, Badung has Gotic and Batik

MANGUPURA -The danger of plastic waste has become a hot issue being discussed in Bali. Local governments, both provincial, district and municipal ones issued the rules in the form of regional bylaw and regent regulation to suppress the use of plastic waste. In addition to political policies, regional governments also have real programs through a number of actions. Badung district, for example, issued the program named Gojek Sampah Plastik (Gotik) or plastic waste pickup program to process plastic waste.

Head of the Badung Environment and Sanitation Agency (DLHK), Putu Eka Merthawan, said that Gothic innovation is a breakthrough carried out by his agency since 2016. “We are heading for Badung to be free from plastic waste generation. Therefore, we continuously try to reduce the volume of waste, especially plastic waste through some programs, such

as the Gotik,” said Eka Merthawan, on Saturday (Jan. 26).

According to him, the collected waste will be sorted into two, namely the organic and inorganic waste. The inorganic waste like plastic bottles, cans and other recycled objects will be sold to collectors, while organic waste will be processed into fertilizer. “By that way, we can reduce the volume of 700 kg plastic waste per day from 210 tons of plastic waste production per day,” he said.

In order to realize Badung free from plastic waste, he claimed to add a network of waste management to each sub-district. “To be zero (free from plastic waste), we have to multiply the network. However, it is not purchased by the Badung government, we just prepare the officers to pick it up, but the garbage is then handed over to waste bank,” he said.

He argued that extraordinary

waste problem must be dealt with extraordinarily. Door to door system implemented in the Gotik program is the most effective service. “We’re unable to handle waste as usual but must be picked up. We buy directly in cash, so it will be easier. Our weakness is having no consistency,” he said.

He added that waste processing by village-owned enterprise or BUMDes has also been carried out at Seminyak village, Kuta. Moreover, the efforts to combat this waste have been included in local village regulations or prarem.

“We have made a pilot project for waste management by BUMDes in collaboration with the Seminyak village. The waste generated by hotels, restaurants and local communities must be managed by integrated waste procession site (TPST) of the Seminyak Clean,” he said.

According to him, the TPST of Seminyak Clean is fully managed by the Seminyak customary village

professionally. The existence of this garbage processing plant is also under the auspices of the local customary village’s bylaw. “The waste is fully managed by customary village. Seminyak villagers, hotels, restaurants and all the merchants are subject to the agreed customary village bylaw,” he said.

As is known, Badung district has a grand design to handle plastic waste rooted in one of Balinese customary cultural philosophies, Tri Hita Karana, posing the harmonious relationship between humans and the environment. The stages of action for handling plastic waste in Badung district are through Gelatik or continuous anti-waste plastic movement (2010-2015), Gojek sampah plastik or Gotik (2016-2021) and Badung Recycle Plaza or BRP (2022-2027). Badung district is promoting plastic waste collection from its sources, both

personally and collectively by the Gotik Team, where integrated and sustainable innovations are being developed through Batik (Badung Anti-Plastic Bags).

“Gotik is curative measure, while Batik is preventive measure because it is a prohibition on the use of plastic. In addition to regional regulations, it is also handled based on local wisdom, namely the making of awig-awig or perarem as customary rule at each customary village has run effectively,” he explained.

Eka Merthawan hoped the support from all agency leaders in Badung district to Genetik (generation of anti-plastic bags) as the driving force of Batik innovation posing the national anti-waste plastic pilot project. “We request the support from all relevant parties to this program so as to run well and be successful,” he concluded. Travel guide: in and around Nagasaki, Japan

Nagasaki It was bad weather which forced American planes to divert from their original target of Kitakyushu and bomb Nagasaki instead. These days, if it were not for the memorials, museum and Peace Park, you’d never know that the quiet suburb of Urakami was completely destroyed.

Over 75,000 died and 75,000 were injured but it could have been far worse – the valley and the mountains afforded some protection and two thirds of the city was spared.

A smooth black stone column marks the point where the bomb exploded 500m from the ground. This was the site of Urakami Cathedral, the largest Catholic Church in Asia, and only a fragment of wall remains.

The Peace Memorial Park, close by, is dominated by sculptor Kitamura Seibo’s muscular Peace Statue, unveiled in 1955. Every year, on the 9th August, there’s an official memorial ceremony remembering the dead, accompanied by antinuclear protesters determined to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

the Atomic Bomb Museum. You’re greeted with pleasant views of pre-war Nagasaki, then you enter a darkened room showing videos with stills of the dead and wounded. A display of personal objects, including a schoolgirl’s charred lunchbox and a helmet with the remains of a skull, bring home the individual tragedy.

In spite of the tragedy this is a beautiful city, set on a huge bay where the shipyards are still busy and mountains frame the skies.

From middle of the 16th century, for over 200 years, Japan’s only contact with the outside world was the Dutch trading post on the island of Dejima.

It’s no longer in the sea, a result of land reclamation, but the buildings have been restored to their 1820’s state. There’s just one street, with the architecture a strange mix of Dutch and Japanese, and it was linked to the mainland by a heavily guarded bridge. You can see their lavish lifestyle as the dining room in the Chief Factor’s Residence has a recreation of a Christmas banquet.

Another part of the city’s past is found in Glover Garden where houses of Meiji-period European residents have been reassembled.

It’s named after Scotsman Thomas Glover who built Japan’s first railway and helped establish the shipbuilding industry here. His house, the oldest Western style building in Japan, sits at the top of the hill and halfway down is a statue of Japanese opera singer Tamaki Miura who found fame in the West as Puccini’s Madame Butterfly.

Unzen In the early twentieth century, people came from Shanghai by steamer to Nagasaki to spend time at the thermal resorts nearby. It then was a boat ride to the seaside town of Obama (no relation to the former US President) and you boarded a sedan chair to be carried up to the resort of Unzen. These days it’s an hour’s bus journey, but it’s still worth stopping here to sample the longest foot bath in Japan which runs by the sea for 105m.

Unzen is still popular today, with a selection of high end hotels tastefully hidden in the woods all offering steam baths, or onsen. It feels like one of those Indian hill resorts and boasts the oldest public golf course in Japan, opened in 1913.

Bubbling hot springs, known as hells, gush with steam and 33 Christians were tossed into Oito Jigoku in 1630. These days they only boil eggs here, and there’s a strong whiff of sulphur.

To catch the mountain air, take advantage of an extensive network of hiking trails in the Unzen National Park, all handily signposted in English. Active volcanoes tower above the town and Mount Fuken last erupted in 1990, although it’s still steaming. You can take a cable car to Myoken and get extensive views of the Ariake Sea. Time your visit for late spring when the pink Azaleas are blooming or autumn when the leaves are turning technicolour reds and yellow. (net)

Plastic waste cleanup movement at Besakih Temple

COMMUNITY activities in maintaining the cleanliness of holy places need to be improved.

One of the efforts is promoting activities to reduce plastic waste.

Some elements of the youth also initiated the declaration of the Gerakan Kedasin Sampah Plastik or Plastic Waste Cleanup Movement at Besakih Temple on Saturday (Jan.13).

Coordinator of the movement, I Ketut Bagus Arjana Wira Putra, stated the activity is aimed at reminding residents to dispose of garbage after praying. “All must take responsibility in waste management. We involve the government, tourism circles and wider community,” he said at Warung 63, Denpasar, on Wednesday (Jan. 23).

Arjana who was accompanied by Komang Agus Widiantara (Chairperson of Peradah Bali), Putu Gede Yudhy Pratama (Secretary of the Committee of KMHDI Bali), and Gus Norma (Bersih-Bersih Bali) hoped the activity can continue.

“We want to instill education with the local community. For the initial stage, we need garbage bins, baskets and plastic sacks.

One more thing that we continue to echo is not to bring along plastic,” he said.

The Plastic Waste Cleanup Movement is an effort by the component of young people that care about plastic waste. This activity has targeted two points, namely the Luhur Lempuyang and Besakih Temple. This move-

ment invites the entire community and national civil servants together to do cleanup. In the Besakih Temple area, there are 19 plastic waste points even though this poses a sacred area.

In addition to pilgrims, merchants are also reminded not to throw plastic trash carelessly.

Tourism-based new economic zones need to be developed

DENPASAR - Bali’s economic growth needs to be driven with serious and innovative efforts.

One of them is by developing new economic zones based on tourism in borderline areas between regencies / cities throughout Bali.

A member of the Panca Bayu faction, Made Arini, said that beyond southern Bali it is necessary to build a culture-based creative industry being comparable to Bali and the development of export-oriented folk handicraft industries to support Bali tourism. “The development of economic area is meant to support tourism in the districts of Buleleng, Bangli, Karangasem, Tabanan, and Gianyar and Jembrana as an effort to equitably distribute income,” she said.

regional government-owned enterprises as a pillar of people’s economy, economic institutions managing fisheries, agriculture, plantations, and folk handicraft industries. Economic development is carried out in accordance with the potential of the districts / municipality.

Plastic waste conjured up into fuel Armed with desperation and determination

TABANAN - Waste problem, especially plastic waste, remains a heavy task to a number of regions because it cannot be fully handled. According to the data of the Tabanan Environment Agency (DLH), the average volume of plastic waste per day reaches 12 tons. However, in the hands of I Gusti Ngurah Adnyana, a 41-year-old man from Delod Puri, Kediri village, Kediri, plastic waste is actually transformed into fuel (BBM). It is meant to participate in creating a better environment. Moreover, currently the regional government is promoting the movement to reduce plastic waste in Bali.

Armed with the expertise in mechanical engineering, Gusti Ngurah Adnyana, who is familiarly addressed as Ajik Anggi, also made plastic waste processing machine into three types of fuel. This idea arose from the frequent gathering and sharing with fellow activists about environmental issues, especially plastic waste becoming daunting problem. From such good intention, Ajik Anggi then decided to try to make a plastic waste processing machine into fuel.

He conducted a research through the Internet and YouTube. His perseverance was paid off, and within just two months, he was able to make a machine. “I have been researching and learning for so long.

Moreover, I have basic engineering, and watch YouTube’s video on the making of such machine, so I try to make it,” he said.

He got great support from his colleagues. Other than being inspired by the videos in YouTube, he also gets input and suggestions from his colleagues to make the machine perfect. Due to his strong determination, Ajik Anggi learned

about how to work on and use plastic waste processing machines in Klaten, Yogyakarta. “Armed with great intention, I went to Klaten to study on the manufacture, use and utilization of the machine,” he explained.

With the knowledge acquired, Ajik Anggi started collecting materials such as stainless, pipes, faucets, and temperature gauges. They were then arranged in such a way into plastic waste processing machine. It has simple design, but the machine is capable of processing 5 kilograms of plastic waste producing approximately 4 liters of fuel. The way it works is easy. The engine is turned on with stove and gas. At first, the reactor tube 1 is filled with various types of plastic waste. After the temperature in reactor 1 has reached 400oCelsius, the combustion results will evaporate and enter the reactor tube 2. This is where we can determine the fuel desired simply by adjusting the pressure. “So if we want gasoline, diesel or kerosene, we can determine it,” he said.

Continued Ajik Anggi, if wishing to produce gasoline, the tem-

perature must be 50oCelcius to 150oCelsius, and then 150o to 200oCelsius for kerosene, while above 200oCelsius for diesel. “If the garbage is full, probably it will take an hour for fuel to come out,” he concluded.

But the other hand, the breakthrough produced by Ajik is still constrained by capital. Besides, he got difficulty to get raw materials like stainless and residue of plastic waste combustion so as not to disturb. “In Bali, stainless are rarely sold, while the residue can still be overcome with water. Thus, when burning we put the water so as not to interfere. Optionally, we can also use acetone,” he added.

In the future, he hoped there will be a role of the government such as by mass production so that it can be used at each hamlet, village or school. Moreover, currently Bali is fighting against plastic waste. Besides, he has tried the fuel on lawn mower but has never been tested on motorcycle. “We will further improve it, so that the results are better tested on motorcycle,” concluded Ajik Anggi. (kmb28)

At least 18 killed in twin bomb attack on Philippine church

JOLO - At least 18 people were killed Sunday when two bombs hit a Catholic church on a southern Philippine island that is a stronghold of Islamist militants, the military said, days after voters backed Muslim self-rule in the region.

A powerful first blast shattered pews and left bodies strewn inside the cathedral on Muslim-majority Jolo as mass was being celebrated, an army spokesman said. Just moments later a second explosion outside killed troops who were rushing to help the wounded in the smoking and heavily damaged church.

It is one of the deadliest bomb attacks to strike the insurgency-plagued southern Philippines in years and came amid the hope spurred by voters’ overwhelming approval of a plan to give Muslims more control over their own affairs. Manila swiftly vowed to hunt down the attackers, but no group has claimed the bombing.

“We will pursue to the ends of the earth the ruthless perpetrators behind this dastardly crime,” presidential spokesman Salvador Panelo said in a statement. “The law will give them no mercy.”

Five soldiers, a member of the coast guard and 12 civilians were among the dead while 83 other people were wounded, said regional military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Gerry Besana. The regional police chief Graciano Mijares put the toll slightly higher at 20 dead, lower than a figure of 27 he gave earlier.

ing area outside the church, a military report said.

Authorities said the notorious Abu Sayyaf kidnap-for-ransom group could be behind the blasts.

“When you talk about terrorism in Sulu, the primary suspect is always the (Abu Sayyaf) but we are not discounting the possibility that there are other perpetrators,” Besana told AFP. The remote island of Jolo is a base of the Abu Sayyaf, which is blamed for deadly bombings, including an attack on a ferry in Manila Bay in 2004 that claimed 116 lives in the country’s deadliest terror assault.

- Peace spoilers? The Abu Sayyaf is a loose network of militants formed in the 1990s with seed money from Osama bin Laden’s Al-Qaeda network, and has earned millions of dollars from banditry and kidnappings-for-ransom, often targeting foreigners. It is among armed networks based in the strife-torn region of Mindanao, some of whose members have pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group.

Jolo also lies in the Bangsamoro Muslim-majority autonomous region, which local voters overwhelmingly backed last week. The approval, which sealed a peace deal with the nation’s largest Muslim rebel group

Moro Islamic Liberation Front, raised hopes for peace after decades of fighting killed some 150,000.

Sulu province -- which includes Jolo -- voted against the creation of the new region, with its governor filing a petition in the Supreme Court to prevent its formation.

Despite Sulu’s vote, the province is legally required to join Bangsamoro because voters from across the current autonomous region voted in favour of it on the whole.

Sunday’s bombing follows a New Year’s eve blast in the southern Philippine city of Cotabato killed two people and wounded 35 others.

The timing of Sunday’s bombs raised questions on whether the attack was meant to derail the peace process. Mujiv Hataman, a regional leader in the Philippines south, said the blasts highlighted the urgency of implementing the peace law.

“I hope the (law) is implemented well so it could be a solution to stop the spread of terrorism,” Hataman told AFP. National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon said “extremist criminals” plotted the bombings.

“We will not allow them to spoil the preference of the people for peace,” Esperon said. “Peace must prevail over war.” (afp)

BANGKOK - A member of Thailand’s most popular all-girl band has apologised for wearing a shirt with a Nazi flag featuring a swastika, after her TV appearance drew “shock and dismay” from the Israeli embassy Saturday.

Images of Hitler, swastikas and other Nazi regalia are fairly commonplace on T-shirts and memorabilia in Thailand, a phenomenon blamed on a lack of awareness about world history.

The latest faux pas was committed by Pichayapa “Namsai” Natha, one of the singers of BNK48, when she wore the redand-black top complete with swastika during the group’s televised rehearsal on Friday.

The deputy chief of mission of the Israeli Embassy in Bangkok took to Twitter to express “shock and dismay” at the outfit, noting that Sunday is International Holocaust Remembrance Day. “Presenting Nazi symbols by the band’s singer hurt the feelings of millions around the world, whose relatives were murdered by the Nazis,” said Smadar Shapira.

The 19-year-old singer was expected to meet with the ambassador of Israel later on Sunday, Shapira told AFP. Georg Schmidt, Germany’s ambassador to Thailand, echoed Shapira’s dismay and also extended an invitation to the group.

“We invite members of #BNK8 to discuss the terror of the Nazi Dictatorship with us,” he tweeted Sunday.

On Saturday night, Namsai apologised onstage during a concert.

“I want this to be an example for everyone, please forgive me,” she said, bursting into tears.

In an extended apology posted on her official Facebook page, Namsai later wrote: “Please give me advice so that I can grow up to be a good adult in the future”.

“I cannot fix the mistake but I promise I will not let it happen again,” she wrote in Thai.

Fans of BNK48, a domestic offshoot of Japanese girl group AKB48, came to Namsai’s defence.

“I’m over 40 and I don’t know anything about this topic. When I saw the shirt, I didn’t think it would be a problem,” said fan Prasit Rudeekriengkrai.

Others blamed Thailand’s education system, which does not focus much on world history.

“What do you expect? When we were in school, they teach only about Thailand and Myanmar wars,” Samruay Kraspra said. Thailand has gotten in trouble in the past for its flippant use of Hitler and Nazi-related imagery.

In 2013, Bangkok’s prestigious Chulalongkorn University was forced to apologise after its students created a mural depicting Hitler during graduation celebrations.

IMF sees Greek economy accelerating in 2019

On March 18, 2018, in honor of the inauguration of the International Day of Happiness, Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Bhutan sponsored an exhibition of paintings by Sri Chinmoy at the United Nations Headquarters.

This exhibition of colorful paintings, which invite people to develop their own inner peace, was brought to Bali by the Jharna-Kala Art Foundation which continues Sri Chimoy’s work of inspiring people all over the world to support peace and harmony within and without – including their “Kids to Kids Happiness Art Project”.

On January 23rd, 2019, a gathering of peace lovers took place at Arma Museum and Resort where Sri Chinmoy found something of the essence of the harmony of Bali when he visited

many years ago. Here Sri Chinmoy also found a friend in fellow visionary founder of Arma, Agung Rai. Their friendship lasted for many years and led to the first of 44 statues of Sri Chinmoy being placed in the garden of Arma after the passing of this great peace leader a few years ago.

The gathering of peace lovers and representatives of the Jharna-kala Art Foundation at Arma on January 19th included the sharing of prayers and offerings by the beautiful bronze statue of Sri Chinmoy accompanied by the soothing sounds of Balinese gamelan music, the opening of the exhibition of Sri Chinmoy’s Happiness and World Peace paintings with heartfelt words shared by by Dr. I Wayan Dibia (former rector of ISI Denpasar)who helped organize the exhibition and Ranjana K. Goose (Director of the Jharna-Kala Art Foundation) and Arma Museum founder Agung Rai. Executive Director of the Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run then officially opened the peace run with the lighting of the torch that will be passed to peace lovers in over 140 countries throughout the southern hemisphere before returning to Bali in a year’s

‘El Chapo’ trial: a three-month plunge into the bloody ways of the drug trade

NEW YORK - Over the space of nearly three months, a New York jury has heard 54 witnesses deliver dramatic evidence against accused Mexican drug boss Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

Former associates, ex-employees and a onetime mistress, most of them now inmates in American prisons, have drawn a blood-soaked picture of the Sinaloa cartel -- of which El Chapo was co-leader for 25 years -- confirming that violent TV series like “Narcos” about notorious drug trafficker Pablo Escobar have not strayed far from the truth.

According to the witnesses, the Sinaloa cartel flooded the United States with cocaine with the blessing of countless police, military officers and Mexican officials -- going all the way up to the president -- who turned their heads in exchange for bribes worth millions.

The prosecution lawyers in New York, having shone a stark spotlight on the powerful cartel, are close to wrapping up their case. The question now is whether the defense can introduce sufficient doubt to save El Chapo from conviction and a likely life sentence.

Here is a summary of some of the most striking testimony to date: - Compromising recordings With the help of Christian

Rodriguez, a Colombian who was El Chapo’s communications chief, US government agents intercepted some 200 conversations between the cartel boss and his associates, hired killers, and corrupt Mexican officials.

Investigators also intercepted encrypted messages between El Chapo and others, sent on Blackberries that the trafficker used to spy on his associates and his mistresses.

In one message read to the jury, El Chapo speaks with associate and a former mistress known as “la Fiera” about setting up dummy corporations in Germany and Ecuador in order to export drugs “to Europe, to Canada, to Australia and to the United States.” They also discuss the purchase in Belize of

700 kilograms (1,540 pounds) of cocaine.

- Friends in Chicago Pedro Flores, a Chicago-based trafficker, testified that he and his twin brother had received 38 tons of cocaine from El Chapo and from the cartel’s other boss, Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, between 2005 and 2008, along with 200 kilos of heroin.

He said he sold it all in the United States -- the cocaine for a total of $800 million and the heroin for $10 million.

After surrendering to American agents, the brothers secretly taped dozens of conversations with El Chapo. In one of them, in 2008, Pedro Flores negotiated with El Chapo over the price of 20 kilos of heroin.

- A steep price markup El Chapo’s accountant, Jesus Zambada, brother to “El Mayo” and the cartel’s boss in Mexico City, told the jury how El Chapo purchased Colombian cocaine for $3,000 a kilo and then sold it in New York for $35,000 a kilo -- a markup of more than 10 times the cost.

All the drugs, an average of 80 to 100 tons a year, were sent to the United States, he said.

- Airplanes full of dollars El Chapo’s former pilot and business manager, Miguel Angel “Gordo” Martinez, testified that the cartel boss would sometimes receive as many as three cash-filled airplanes from the United States in a single day. Each plane carried “eight to 10 million dollars,” he said.

He also told how El Chapo worked with Colombian suppliers to finance deliveries of up to 14 tons of cocaine -- transported by boat to international waters off Mexico, where Colombian crews would transfer the drug to El Chapo’s employees.

The Brazil office of environmentalist group Greenpeace said the dam break was “a sad consequence of the lessons not learned by the Brazilian government and the mining companies.”

Such incidents “are not accidents but environmental crimes that must be investigated, punished and repaired,” it added.

While the death toll has yet to be fully established, the disaster at the mine could well rank among the worst recorded in Brazil.

In 2008, a moving mass of mud and rocks from an illegal iron ore mine slammed into the Chinese town of Taoshi, in northern Shanxi province, killing 262 people.

Torrential rains that overwhelmed a dam and caused landslides that killed some and displaced more than a few thousand residents in central Indonesia, officials said Wednesday.

JAKARTA - The number of people killed after days of torrential rain triggered flash floods and landslides on Indonesia’s Sulawesi island has climbed to 59 with 25 others missing, a disaster official said Friday.

Rescuers recovered more bodies as floodwaters and rainfall subsided in several areas, said Sutopo Purwo

Nugroho, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman. He said 45 people died in floods and 14

others in landslides.

Operators at the overwhelmed Bili Bili rock-fill embankment dam were forced to release water late Tuesday, which contributed to flooding but avoided a worse disaster.

Houses of more than 6,500 residents in thirteen districts and cities

in the province including capital Makassar have been affected by flooding, forcing more than 3,000 people to flee.

Rescuers are still searching for 25 people, while 47 others have been hospitalized.

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo called several ministers to the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday to discuss changes in the structure of the Ministry of Defense.

Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform Minister Syafruddin, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati, Cabinet Secretary Pra-

mono Anung, and Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu were among the many attendees at the meeting.

“We discuss the structure at the Ministry of Defense, as there will be a change,” Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform Minister Syafruddin stated here on Thursday.

The minister did not elaborate further regarding the structural

changes on whether downsizing would be conducted. “Some are downsized, while others are flexible according to the needs in relation to defense issues,” the minister noted.

The minister confirmed that no changes will be made in the budget in the near future.

“During the meeting, the finance minister just listens. The change in

the structure will have implications on the budget later,” the minister remarked.

On the occasion, the minister also reported on the evaluation of a civil servant enrollment test (CPNS) in 2018.

“The CPNS in 2018 has concluded, and we are just waiting for the Employee Identity Number

(NIP). We will also conduct the civil servant enrollment test in 2019. However, it will be in the sixth month,” the minister stated.

Meanwhile, speaking in connection with the implementation of civil servants` salary hike in 2019, the minister stated that the Ministry of Finance will handle the increase.(ant)

It has assisted the villagers in constructing a traditional house fully equipped with various traditional tools. Visitors can spend the night in the house.

The village is unique because it is between the sea to the north and the mountains to the south. Therefore it seems as if the hills are guarding the houses below. Some archaeologists have also found some ancient human fossils here.

GEELONG - Italian sprint king Elia Viviani held off Australian rival Caleb Ewan and South African Daryl Impey in a tight finish to win the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road race on Sunday.

Viviani was able to stay with the lead group over four tough climbs and emerge from the slipstream of Deceuninck-Quick Step teammate Michael Morkov in the final metres to pip Ewan at the post.

Viviani came to Australia on a mission after being beaten into second last year by Jay McCarthy, who could only finish eighth this

time, and he was over the moon.

“It’s feels amazing. I was really focused on this race,” said Viviani.

“I was really happy with the performance of the team.

Carlo Ancelotti’s Napoli settled for a point in a goalless draw amid high security at AC Milan on Saturday as evergreen Sampdoria forward Fabio Quagliarella equalled a Serie A record by scoring in 11 consecutive games.

Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly returned from the two-match ban he received a month ago after being targeted by racist chanting by Inter Milan fans at the same San Siro stadium.

Anti-riot police took up positions around the San Siro as part of stringent security measures Saturday, but the match took place without incident apart from some anti-Neapolitan songs beforehand.

The Hammers may be 10th in the Premier League and Wimbledon rock bottom of third-tier League One, but that didn’t stop them going 3-0 down in this all-London tie, with Scott Wagstaff scoring twice after Kwesi Appiah’s opener.

West Ham manager Pellegrini sent on substitutes Lucas Perez and Felipe Anderson after the break, with both players scoring to make it 3-2.

But Wimbledon teenager Toby Sibbick settled the match just moments after coming on by heading in the goal that ended all hope of a Hammers fightback two minutes from time. “Was I angry at half-time? Yes of course. I was ashamed of them,” said Pellegrini.

“I didn’t expect it, the attitude, playing against a team that sits two divisions below us, but in football, you can lose in two or three balls.

Monaco plight persists in wake of Henry exit

Former France and Arsenal star Henry was suspended and later axed

by Monaco after just two wins in the league since his arrival in October.

Jardim, who led Monaco to the French title in 2017, is returning to the club only three months after he was dismissed following a dreadful start to the season.

The village is unique because it is between the sea to the north and the mountains to the south. Therefore it seems as if the hills are guarding the houses below. Some archaeologists have also found some ancient human fossils here.

‘El Chapo’ trial: a three-month plunge into the bloody ways of the drug trade

NEW YORK - Over the space of nearly three months, a New York jury has heard 54 witnesses deliver dramatic evidence against accused Mexican drug boss Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

Former associates, ex-employees and a onetime mistress, most of them now inmates in American prisons, have drawn a blood-soaked picture of the Sinaloa cartel -- of which El Chapo was co-leader for 25 years -- confirming that violent TV series like “Narcos” about notorious drug trafficker Pablo Escobar have not strayed far from the truth.

According to the witnesses, the Sinaloa cartel flooded the United States with cocaine with the blessing of countless police, military officers and Mexican officials -- going all the way up to the president -- who turned their heads in exchange for bribes worth millions.

The prosecution lawyers in New York, having shone a stark spotlight on the powerful cartel, are close to wrapping up their case. The question now is whether the defense can introduce sufficient doubt to save El Chapo from conviction and a likely life sentence.

Here is a summary of some of the most striking testimony to date: - Compromising recordings With the help of Christian

Rodriguez, a Colombian who was El Chapo’s communications chief, US government agents intercepted some 200 conversations between the cartel boss and his associates, hired killers, and corrupt Mexican officials.

Investigators also intercepted encrypted messages between El Chapo and others, sent on Blackberries that the trafficker used to spy on his associates and his mistresses.

In one message read to the jury, El Chapo speaks with associate and a former mistress known as “la Fiera” about setting up dummy corporations in Germany and Ecuador in order to export drugs “to Europe, to Canada, to Australia and to the United States.” They also discuss the purchase in Belize of

700 kilograms (1,540 pounds) of cocaine.

- Friends in Chicago Pedro Flores, a Chicago-based trafficker, testified that he and his twin brother had received 38 tons of cocaine from El Chapo and from the cartel’s other boss, Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, between 2005 and 2008, along with 200 kilos of heroin.

He said he sold it all in the United States -- the cocaine for a total of $800 million and the heroin for $10 million.

After surrendering to American agents, the brothers secretly taped dozens of conversations with El Chapo. In one of them, in 2008, Pedro Flores negotiated with El Chapo over the price of 20 kilos of heroin.

- A steep price markup El Chapo’s accountant, Jesus Zambada, brother to “El Mayo” and the cartel’s boss in Mexico City, told the jury how El Chapo purchased Colombian cocaine for $3,000 a kilo and then sold it in New York for $35,000 a kilo -- a markup of more than 10 times the cost.

All the drugs, an average of 80 to 100 tons a year, were sent to the United States, he said.

- Airplanes full of dollars El Chapo’s former pilot and business manager, Miguel Angel “Gordo” Martinez, testified that the cartel boss would sometimes receive as many as three cash-filled airplanes from the United States in a single day. Each plane carried “eight to 10 million dollars,” he said.

He also told how El Chapo worked with Colombian suppliers to finance deliveries of up to 14 tons of cocaine -- transported by boat to international waters off Mexico, where Colombian crews would transfer the drug to El Chapo’s employees.

Such incidents “are not accidents but environmental crimes that must be investigated, punished and repaired,” it added.

While the death toll has yet to be fully established, the disaster at the mine could well rank among the worst recorded in Brazil.

In 2008, a moving mass of mud and rocks from an illegal iron ore mine slammed into the Chinese town of Taoshi, in northern Shanxi province, killing 262 people.

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo called several ministers to the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday to discuss changes in the structure of the Ministry of Defense.

Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform Minister Syafruddin, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati, Cabinet Secretary Pra-

mono Anung, and Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu were among the many attendees at the meeting.

“We discuss the structure at the Ministry of Defense, as there will be a change,” Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform Minister Syafruddin stated here on Thursday.

The minister did not elaborate further regarding the structural

changes on whether downsizing would be conducted. “Some are downsized, while others are flexible according to the needs in relation to defense issues,” the minister noted.

The minister confirmed that no changes will be made in the budget in the near future.

“During the meeting, the finance minister just listens. The change in

the structure will have implications on the budget later,” the minister remarked.

On the occasion, the minister also reported on the evaluation of a civil servant enrollment test (CPNS) in 2018.

“The CPNS in 2018 has concluded, and we are just waiting for the Employee Identity Number

(NIP). We will also conduct the civil servant enrollment test in 2019. However, it will be in the sixth month,” the minister stated.

Meanwhile, speaking in connection with the implementation of civil servants` salary hike in 2019, the minister stated that the Ministry of Finance will handle the increase.(ant)

IMF sees Greek economy accelerating in 2019

ATHENS - The International Monetary Fund said Friday it is optimistic on Greece’s growth and employment prospects for this year, but urged the government to stick to reforms to maintain the momentum. medium-term ability to repay its creditors — mostly its European partners and the IMF — remains “robust.”

On March 18, 2018, in honor of the inauguration of the International Day of Happiness, Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Bhutan sponsored an exhibition of paintings by Sri Chinmoy at the United Nations Headquarters.

This exhibition of colorful paintings, which invite people to develop their own inner peace, was brought to Bali by the Jharna-Kala Art Foundation which continues Sri Chimoy’s work of inspiring people all over the world to support peace and harmony within and without – including their “Kids to Kids Happiness Art Project”.

On January 23rd, 2019, a gathering of peace lovers took place at Arma Museum and Resort where Sri Chinmoy found something of the essence of the harmony of Bali when he visited

Tourism-based new economic zones need to be developed

DENPASAR - Bali’s economic growth needs to be driven with serious and innovative efforts.

One of them is by developing new economic zones based on tourism in borderline areas between regencies / cities throughout Bali.

It is one of the contents of the general perspective of the Panca Bayu Faction of the Bali House of Representatives related to the Regional Regulation concerning the Regional Long-Term Development Plan (RPJPD) 2005-2025 and the Regional Regulation concerning the Universal Planning of the Mid-Term Development Plan 2018-2023 in Plenary Session in the Bali House of Representatives recently.

A member of the Panca Bayu faction, Made Arini, said that beyond southern Bali it is necessary to build a culture-based creative industry being comparable to Bali and the development of export-oriented folk handicraft industries to support Bali tourism. “The development of economic area is meant to support tourism in the districts of Buleleng, Bangli, Karangasem, Tabanan, and Gianyar and Jembrana as an effort to equitably distribute income,” she said.

In addition, continued Arini, it is also necessary to optimize or organize and manage the

regional government-owned enterprises as a pillar of people’s economy, economic institutions managing fisheries, agriculture, plantations, and folk handicraft industries. Economic development is carried out in accordance with the potential of the districts / municipality.

“Certainly, it is to balance the centers of economic growth between regions throughout Bali carried out through investments in the scheme of inclusion of local government, private sector and local economic players in Bali,” she said. Plastic waste conjured up into fuel Armed with desperation and determination

TABANAN - Waste problem, especially plastic waste, remains a heavy task to a number of regions because it cannot be fully handled. According to the data of the Tabanan Environment Agency (DLH), the average volume of plastic waste per day reaches 12 tons. However, in the hands of I Gusti Ngurah Adnyana, a 41-year-old man from Delod Puri, Kediri village, Kediri, plastic waste is actually transformed into fuel (BBM). It is meant to participate in creating a better environment. Moreover, currently the regional government is promoting the movement to reduce plastic waste in Bali.

Armed with the expertise in mechanical engineering, Gusti Ngurah Adnyana, who is familiarly addressed as Ajik Anggi, also made plastic waste processing machine into three types of fuel. This idea arose from the frequent gathering and sharing with fellow activists about environmental issues, especially plastic waste becoming daunting problem. From such good intention, Ajik Anggi then decided to try to make a plastic waste processing machine into fuel.

He conducted a research through the Internet and YouTube. His perseverance was paid off, and within just two months, he was able to make a machine. “I have been researching and learning for so long.

Moreover, I have basic engineering, and watch YouTube’s video on the making of such machine, so I try to make it,” he said.

He got great support from his colleagues. Other than being inspired by the videos in YouTube, he also gets input and suggestions from his colleagues to make the machine perfect. Due to his strong determination, Ajik Anggi learned

about how to work on and use plastic waste processing machines in Klaten, Yogyakarta. “Armed with great intention, I went to Klaten to study on the manufacture, use and utilization of the machine,” he explained.

With the knowledge acquired, Ajik Anggi started collecting materials such as stainless, pipes, faucets, and temperature gauges. They were then arranged in such a way into plastic waste processing machine. It has simple design, but the machine is capable of processing 5 kilograms of plastic waste producing approximately 4 liters of fuel. The way it works is easy. The engine is turned on with stove and gas. At first, the reactor tube 1 is filled with various types of plastic waste. After the temperature in reactor 1 has reached 400oCelsius, the combustion results will evaporate and enter the reactor tube 2. This is where we can determine the fuel desired simply by adjusting the pressure. “So if we want gasoline, diesel or kerosene, we can determine it,” he said.

Continued Ajik Anggi, if wishing to produce gasoline, the tem-

perature must be 50oCelcius to 150oCelsius, and then 150o to 200oCelsius for kerosene, while above 200oCelsius for diesel. “If the garbage is full, probably it will take an hour for fuel to come out,” he concluded.

But the other hand, the breakthrough produced by Ajik is still constrained by capital. Besides, he got difficulty to get raw materials like stainless and residue of plastic waste combustion so as not to disturb. “In Bali, stainless are rarely sold, while the residue can still be overcome with water. Thus, when burning we put the water so as not to interfere. Optionally, we can also use acetone,” he added.

In the future, he hoped there will be a role of the government such as by mass production so that it can be used at each hamlet, village or school. Moreover, currently Bali is fighting against plastic waste. Besides, he has tried the fuel on lawn mower but has never been tested on motorcycle. “We will further improve it, so that the results are better tested on motorcycle,” concluded Ajik Anggi. (kmb28)

At least 18 killed in twin bomb attack on Philippine church

JOLO - At least 18 people were killed Sunday when two bombs hit a Catholic church on a southern Philippine island that is a stronghold of Islamist militants, the military said, days after voters backed Muslim self-rule in the region.

A powerful first blast shattered pews and left bodies strewn inside the cathedral on Muslim-majority Jolo as mass was being celebrated, an army spokesman said. Just moments later a second explosion outside killed troops who were rushing to help the wounded in the smoking and heavily damaged church.

It is one of the deadliest bomb attacks to strike the insurgency-plagued southern Philippines in years and came amid the hope spurred by voters’ overwhelming approval of a plan to give Muslims more control over their own affairs. Manila swiftly vowed to hunt down the attackers, but no group has claimed the bombing.

“We will pursue to the ends of the earth the ruthless perpetrators behind this dastardly crime,” presidential spokesman Salvador Panelo said in a statement. “The law will give them no mercy.”

Five soldiers, a member of the coast guard and 12 civilians were among the dead while 83 other people were wounded, said regional military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Gerry Besana. The regional police chief Graciano Mijares put the toll slightly higher at 20 dead, lower than a figure of 27 he gave earlier.

The second bomb was left in the utility box of a motorcycle in the park-

ing area outside the church, a military report said.

Authorities said the notorious Abu Sayyaf kidnap-for-ransom group could be behind the blasts.

“When you talk about terrorism in Sulu, the primary suspect is always the (Abu Sayyaf) but we are not discounting the possibility that there are other perpetrators,” Besana told AFP. The remote island of Jolo is a base of the Abu Sayyaf, which is blamed for deadly bombings, including an attack on a ferry in Manila Bay in 2004 that claimed 116 lives in the country’s deadliest terror assault.

- Peace spoilers? The Abu Sayyaf is a loose network of militants formed in the 1990s with seed money from Osama bin Laden’s Al-Qaeda network, and has earned millions of dollars from banditry and kidnappings-for-ransom, often targeting foreigners. It is among armed networks based in the strife-torn region of Mindanao, some of whose members have pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group.

Jolo also lies in the Bangsamoro Muslim-majority autonomous region, which local voters overwhelmingly backed last week. The approval, which sealed a peace deal with the nation’s largest Muslim rebel group

Moro Islamic Liberation Front, raised hopes for peace after decades of fighting killed some 150,000.

Sulu province -- which includes Jolo -- voted against the creation of the new region, with its governor filing a petition in the Supreme Court to prevent its formation.

Despite Sulu’s vote, the province is legally required to join Bangsamoro because voters from across the current autonomous region voted in favour of it on the whole.

Sunday’s bombing follows a New Year’s eve blast in the southern Philippine city of Cotabato killed two people and wounded 35 others.

The timing of Sunday’s bombs raised questions on whether the attack was meant to derail the peace process. Mujiv Hataman, a regional leader in the Philippines south, said the blasts highlighted the urgency of implementing the peace law.

“I hope the (law) is implemented well so it could be a solution to stop the spread of terrorism,” Hataman told AFP. National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon said “extremist criminals” plotted the bombings.

“We will not allow them to spoil the preference of the people for peace,” Esperon said. “Peace must prevail over war.” (afp)

BANGKOK - A member of Thailand’s most popular all-girl band has apologised for wearing a shirt with a Nazi flag featuring a swastika, after her TV appearance drew “shock and dismay” from the Israeli embassy Saturday.

Images of Hitler, swastikas and other Nazi regalia are fairly commonplace on T-shirts and memorabilia in Thailand, a phenomenon blamed on a lack of awareness about world history.

The latest faux pas was committed by Pichayapa “Namsai” Natha, one of the singers of BNK48, when she wore the redand-black top complete with swastika during the group’s televised rehearsal on Friday.

The deputy chief of mission of the Israeli Embassy in Bangkok took to Twitter to express “shock and dismay” at the outfit, noting that Sunday is International Holocaust Remembrance Day. “Presenting Nazi symbols by the band’s singer hurt the feelings of millions around the world, whose relatives were murdered by the Nazis,” said Smadar Shapira.

The 19-year-old singer was expected to meet with the ambassador of Israel later on Sunday, Shapira told AFP. Georg Schmidt, Germany’s ambassador to Thailand, echoed Shapira’s dismay and also extended an invitation to the group.

“We invite members of #BNK8 to discuss the terror of the Nazi Dictatorship with us,” he tweeted Sunday.

On Saturday night, Namsai apologised onstage during a concert.

“I want this to be an example for everyone, please forgive me,” she said, bursting into tears.

In an extended apology posted on her official Facebook page, Namsai later wrote: “Please give me advice so that I can grow up to be a good adult in the future”.

“I cannot fix the mistake but I promise I will not let it happen again,” she wrote in Thai.

Fans of BNK48, a domestic offshoot of Japanese girl group AKB48, came to Namsai’s defence.

“I’m over 40 and I don’t know anything about this topic. When I saw the shirt, I didn’t think it would be a problem,” said fan Prasit Rudeekriengkrai.

Others blamed Thailand’s education system, which does not focus much on world history.

“What do you expect? When we were in school, they teach only about Thailand and Myanmar wars,” Samruay Kraspra said. Thailand has gotten in trouble in the past for its flippant use of Hitler and Nazi-related imagery.

In 2013, Bangkok’s prestigious Chulalongkorn University was forced to apologise after its students created a mural depicting Hitler during graduation celebrations.

Nagasaki It was bad weather which forced American planes to divert from their original target of Kitakyushu and bomb Nagasaki instead. These days, if it were not for the memorials, museum and Peace Park, you’d never know that the quiet suburb of Urakami was completely destroyed.

Over 75,000 died and 75,000 were injured but it could have been far worse – the valley and the mountains afforded some protection and two thirds of the city was spared.

A smooth black stone column marks the point where the bomb exploded 500m from the ground. This was the site of Urakami Cathedral, the largest Catholic Church in Asia, and only a fragment of wall remains.

The Peace Memorial Park, close by, is dominated by sculptor Kitamura Seibo’s muscular Peace Statue, unveiled in 1955. Every year, on the 9th August, there’s an official memorial ceremony remembering the dead, accompanied by antinuclear protesters determined to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

the Atomic Bomb Museum. You’re greeted with pleasant views of pre-war Nagasaki, then you enter a darkened room showing videos with stills of the dead and wounded. A display of personal objects, including a schoolgirl’s charred lunchbox and a helmet with the remains of a skull, bring home the individual tragedy.

In spite of the tragedy this is a beautiful city, set on a huge bay where the shipyards are still busy and mountains frame the skies.

From middle of the 16th century, for over 200 years, Japan’s only contact with the outside world was the Dutch trading post on the island of Dejima.

It’s no longer in the sea, a result of land reclamation, but the buildings have been restored to their 1820’s state. There’s just one street, with the architecture a strange mix of Dutch and Japanese, and it was linked to the mainland by a heavily guarded bridge. You can see their lavish lifestyle as the dining room in the Chief Factor’s Residence has a recreation of a Christmas banquet.

Another part of the city’s past is found in Glover Garden where houses of Meiji-period European residents have been reassembled.

It’s named after Scotsman Thomas Glover who built Japan’s first railway and helped establish the shipbuilding industry here. His house, the oldest Western style building in Japan, sits at the top of the hill and halfway down is a statue of Japanese opera singer Tamaki Miura who found fame in the West as Puccini’s Madame Butterfly.

It then was a boat ride to the seaside town of Obama (no relation to the former US President) and you boarded a sedan chair to be carried up to the resort of Unzen. These days it’s an hour’s bus journey, but it’s still worth stopping here to sample the longest foot bath in Japan which runs by the sea for 105m.

Unzen is still popular today, with a selection of high end hotels tastefully hidden in the woods all offering steam baths, or onsen. It feels like one of those Indian hill resorts and boasts the oldest public golf course in Japan, opened in 1913.

Bubbling hot springs, known as hells, gush with steam and 33 Christians were tossed into Oito Jigoku in 1630. These days they only boil eggs here, and there’s a strong whiff of sulphur.

To catch the mountain air, take advantage of an extensive network of hiking trails in the Unzen National Park, all handily signposted in English. Active volcanoes tower above the town and Mount Fuken last erupted in 1990, although it’s still steaming. You can take a cable car to Myoken and get extensive views of the Ariake Sea. Time your visit for late spring when the pink Azaleas are blooming or autumn when the leaves are turning technicolour reds and yellow. (net)

Plastic waste cleanup movement at Besakih Temple

COMMUNITY activities in maintaining the cleanliness of holy places need to be improved.

One of the efforts is promoting activities to reduce plastic waste.

Some elements of the youth also initiated the declaration of the Gerakan Kedasin Sampah Plastik or Plastic Waste Cleanup Movement at Besakih Temple on Saturday (Jan.13).

Coordinator of the movement, I Ketut Bagus Arjana Wira Putra, stated the activity is aimed at reminding residents to dispose of garbage after praying. “All must take responsibility in waste management. We involve the government, tourism circles and wider community,” he said at Warung 63, Denpasar, on Wednesday (Jan. 23).

Arjana who was accompanied by Komang Agus Widiantara (Chairperson of Peradah Bali), Putu Gede Yudhy Pratama (Secretary of the Committee of KMHDI Bali), and Gus Norma (Bersih-Bersih Bali) hoped the activity can continue.

“We want to instill education with the local community. For the initial stage, we need garbage bins, baskets and plastic sacks.

One more thing that we continue to echo is not to bring along plastic,” he said.

The Plastic Waste Cleanup Movement is an effort by the component of young people that care about plastic waste. This activity has targeted two points, namely the Luhur Lempuyang and Besakih Temple. This move-

ment invites the entire community and national civil servants together to do cleanup. In the Besakih Temple area, there are 19 plastic waste points even though this poses a sacred area.

Pattern of waste transportation changed

SINCE the beginning of 2019, the pattern of waste management in Denpasar has undergone significant changes, especially in taking garbage from residents. If previously it was made a synergy between the waste management organization and the Denpasar Environment and Sanitation Agency (DLHK), today this no longer continues.

All waste of the community becomes the responsibility of selfmanagement party at each hamlet.

The waste management officer is in charge of transporting garbage to the nearest temporary waste disposal site. Meanwhile, to transport from temporary disposal site to Suwung Landfill becomes the authority of the DLHK. Head of the DLHK Denpasar, I Ketut Wisada, when met recently said the measure is an effort to build an integrated waste management system. On that account, now the formation of self-managed waste groups in Denpasar continues to be

maximized. In collaboration with the village authority, it is expected to be able to build a system of integrated waste management.

Wisada said that based on Denpasar Mayoral Regulation No.11/2016, the Procedure for Waste Management and Disposal in Denpasar City mandates the waste management in the community should be carried out by waste self-managed groups under coordination of the village authority. Thus, the handling of waste starting from the upstream can provide education for community about the sorting, management and

utilization of waste.

“Proper governance can definitely reduce the volume of waste going to landfill, where inorganic ones can be sorted and saved in waste banks and organic ones can be used for composting,” he explained.

Currently, in Denpasar City there are at least 171 waste management groups that manage waste directly in the community and provide education about waste sorting. Nevertheless, some regions are still requesting assistance regarding the transportation of this roadside waste.

Based on data of the Denpasar Environment and Sanitation Agen-

cy on Thursday (Dec. 27), the volume of garbage increased after the two holidays reaching 60 percent, around 1,500 tons during Penampahan Galungan, Galungan and Umanis Galungan. This number has increased by around 600 tons from usual days, reaching 900 tons.

Regarding the volume of waste, Wisada said there was an increase.

On a normal day, it reached 900 tons, while on religious holidays increased significantly reaching 1,500 tons per day. This amount of waste is handled by maximizing the available officers. At present, a total of 1,459 sanitation staff are alerted with 49 garbage trucks in each sub-district and village.

Meanwhile, Division Head of Waste Management and Hazardous Substance Handling (B3) at

the DLHK Denpasar, I Ketut Adi Wiguna, acknowledged there are a number of things needed to be conveyed to the public regarding the changes in this waste management system. One of the frequently asked questions by the public is regarding double payments. There is payment of garbage charged in the bill of water subscription of PDAM for those whose garbage is taken by the DLHK. However, if it is currently managed by the hamlet or self-managed party, the payment will be made directly by each self-managed officer. “This can be reported to each headman to be further submitted to DLHK. Our task in the DLHK will revoke payments in the bill of the PDAM,” said Adi Wiguna when met at Kreneng Market. (ara)

To reduce plastic waste, Badung has Gotic and Batik

MANGUPURA -The danger of plastic waste has become a hot issue being discussed in Bali. Local governments, both provincial, district and municipal ones issued the rules in the form of regional bylaw and regent regulation to suppress the use of plastic waste. In addition to political policies, regional governments also have real programs through a number of actions. Badung district, for example, issued the program named Gojek Sampah Plastik (Gotik) or plastic waste pickup program to process plastic waste.

Head of the Badung Environment and Sanitation Agency (DLHK), Putu Eka Merthawan, said that Gothic innovation is a breakthrough carried out by his agency since 2016. “We are heading for Badung to be free from plastic waste generation. Therefore, we continuously try to reduce the volume of waste, especially plastic waste through some programs, such

as the Gotik,” said Eka Merthawan, on Saturday (Jan. 26).

According to him, the collected waste will be sorted into two, namely the organic and inorganic waste. The inorganic waste like plastic bottles, cans and other recycled objects will be sold to collectors, while organic waste will be processed into fertilizer. “By that way, we can reduce the volume of 700 kg plastic waste per day from 210 tons of plastic waste production per day,” he said.

In order to realize Badung free from plastic waste, he claimed to add a network of waste management to each sub-district. “To be zero (free from plastic waste), we have to multiply the network. However, it is not purchased by the Badung government, we just prepare the officers to pick it up, but the garbage is then handed over to waste bank,” he said.

He argued that extraordinary

waste problem must be dealt with extraordinarily. Door to door system implemented in the Gotik program is the most effective service. “We’re unable to handle waste as usual but must be picked up. We buy directly in cash, so it will be easier. Our weakness is having no consistency,” he said.

He added that waste processing by village-owned enterprise or BUMDes has also been carried out at Seminyak village, Kuta. Moreover, the efforts to combat this waste have been included in local village regulations or prarem.

“We have made a pilot project for waste management by BUMDes in collaboration with the Seminyak village. The waste generated by hotels, restaurants and local communities must be managed by integrated waste procession site (TPST) of the Seminyak Clean,” he said.

According to him, the TPST of Seminyak Clean is fully managed by the Seminyak customary village

professionally. The existence of this garbage processing plant is also under the auspices of the local customary village’s bylaw. “The waste is fully managed by customary village. Seminyak villagers, hotels, restaurants and all the merchants are subject to the agreed customary village bylaw,” he said.

As is known, Badung district has a grand design to handle plastic waste rooted in one of Balinese customary cultural philosophies, Tri Hita Karana, posing the harmonious relationship between humans and the environment. The stages of action for handling plastic waste in Badung district are through Gelatik or continuous anti-waste plastic movement (2010-2015), Gojek sampah plastik or Gotik (2016-2021) and Badung Recycle Plaza or BRP (2022-2027). Badung district is promoting plastic waste collection from its sources, both

personally and collectively by the Gotik Team, where integrated and sustainable innovations are being developed through Batik (Badung Anti-Plastic Bags).

“Gotik is curative measure, while Batik is preventive measure because it is a prohibition on the use of plastic. In addition to regional regulations, it is also handled based on local wisdom, namely the making of awig-awig or perarem as customary rule at each customary village has run effectively,” he explained.

Eka Merthawan hoped the support from all agency leaders in Badung district to Genetik (generation of anti-plastic bags) as the driving force of Batik innovation posing the national anti-waste plastic pilot project. “We request the support from all relevant parties to this program so as to run well and be successful,” he concluded. US rapper Nelly asks for British woman’s rape claim to be dismissed THE rapper Nelly is asking a US court to dismiss a British woman’s lawsuit claiming he sexually assaulted her after a concert.

The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has accused the US artist of targeting her in a dressing room at the Cliffs Pavilion in Essex in December 2017.

A federal lawsuit was filed in the 44-year-old rapper’s hometown St Louis, Missouri, in November.

Nelly, whose real name is Cornell Haynes Jr, has not been criminally charged and denies the allegations.

The woman is identified only as Jane Doe in the lawsuit.

Scott Rosenblum, Nelly’s lawyer, filed a response on Thursday.

He argued the woman should not be allowed to remain anonymous and “avoid public scrutiny”.

The woman alleges she paid to

have her photo taken with the rapper after the concert before he took her to a separate room and sexually assaulted her.

Her lawyer Karen Koehler said the woman reported the incident to police more than a year ago and she believes the investigation is ongoing.

Mr Rosenblum argued a “cloak of anonymity” for the accuser invites people with personal vendettas “to use the federal court system as a tool to inflict calculated harm against others’ reputations” while protecting themselves from scrutiny “that false accusations properly risk and invite”. The lawsuit is the second such case filed against the rapper.

GAME Of Thrones star Maisie Williams has admitted she doesn’t think anyone will be satisfied when the show finally ends. Williams, 21, who has grown up playing Arya Stark, told Sky News that fans just don’t want it to end but for her “it’s the right time” for it to finish.

Brazil dam disaster leaves 34 dead, hundreds missing

Thirty-four people were confirmed dead and nearly 300 missing Saturday, with hopes fading of them being found alive, after a dam collapsed at a mine in southeast Brazil.

The disaster struck Friday at the Vale mine near the city of Belo Horizonte in Minas Gerais state, spewing millions of tons of muddy sludge across the facility and down towards farmland alongside the nearby town of Brumadinho.

Dozens of helicopters were used in the rescue operation Saturday because the released mud engulfed buildings, vehicles and roads with a deep, treacherous layer.

Rescue officials announced the death toll had more than tripled through the day as more and more

bodies were pulled from the mud.

By the last count, nearly 300 people were missing, virtually all of them mine workers listed

by Vale.

Among the more than 170 survivors rescued, 23 were hospitalized with injuries. Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro flew over the devastated zone, later tweeting that it was “difficult to not be emotional before this scene.”

All was being done to care for survivors and “determine the facts, to demand justice and prevent new

tragedies,” he added.

The military said it was deploying 1,000 troops, including sniffer dogs, to the affected zone under orders from the president.

The disaster was the first big emergency faced by Bolsonaro and his government since he took office in early January, and perhaps one of the biggest disasters in Brazil’s history.

Workers at its mine had been lunching in an administrative area Friday when they were sud-

denly engulfed by millions of tons of muddy trailings -- a waste byproduct of the iron-ore mining operations.

The ruptured dam, 42 years old and 282 feet (86 meters) high, had been in the process of being decommissioned, and Vale said it had recently passed structural safety tests.

After overflowing a second dam, the vast muddy mass barreled down toward Brumadinho, population 39,000, but only glanced along it before spearing its way through vegetation and farmland, smashing houses and swallowing tractors and roads in its way.

and Minas Gerais Governor Romeu Zema both expressed pessimism, warning the toll could rise. “From now, the odds are minimal (to find more people alive) and it is most likely we will recover only bodies,” Zema told reporters late Friday. In Rio, Schvartsman spoke of a “human tragedy.”
