LOS ANGELES - Netflix Inc’s new movie “Bright” features the key ingredients of a Hollywood blockbuster: an A-list actor, an experienced director, and special effects that light up the screen during shootouts and car chases. Very few cinemas, however, will be showing the fantasy thriller starring Will Smith when it debuts on Friday. Netflix will instead release the movie to the company’s 109 million streaming customers around the world to watch at home. Although Netflix has released smaller, less expensive original films this way, “Bright” is more of a gamble. The movie, set in Los Angeles in a world where orcs, elves and other fantastic creatures co-exist with humans, cost more than $90 million to make, and it is the kind of rich, cinematic action movie traditionally generally considered best on the giant screen. At the red-carpet premiere for “Bright” in Los Angeles, its star said he wondered how audiences would react to seeing the film on televisions or mobile devices. “There’s an emotional overwhelming that happens when you watch something in a movie theater with 400 people, right?” Smith said. He noted the film had production values as high as any of his other big movies, but asked: “Does it penetrate in the same way?” Netflix argues that today’s internet-ready TVs and surround sound systems can provide a the-

The company encourages filmmakers to consider using video technology called high dynamic range, which brightens images and makes details stand out, and the latest sound from Dolby Laboratories Inc. Both were used in “Bright.” At a new production space and offices in Hollywood, Netflix employs a color scientist and other technical experts to help filmmakers incorporate innovations. The company began promoting “Bright” on the streaming service back in March, much earlier than usual. Utilizing its extensive data about viewer tastes, it began showing movie trailers at that time to targeted subscribers. Facebook, Universal Music strike multi-year licensing deal

Facebook Inc and Universal Music Group on Thursday announced a global agreement that will enable users to upload videos featuring music from Universal’s library across the social media network as well as Instagram and Oculus. Through the agreement, which is Facebook’s first with a major record label, the social

media company will no longer have to require users to take down videos featuring music from Universal’s catalog due to copyright infringement. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Facebook’s deal with Universal Music Group comes as the world’s largest social media site is making a

big push into video to keep users on its site and attract advertisers. Earlier this year it launched its Watch video service, which features shows from the likes of Buzzfeed, Discovery Communications as well as some sports like Major League Baseball. The partnership comes days after

Putin critic Navalny barred from Russian presidential election

MOSCOW - Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was barred on Monday from running in next year’s presidential election after officials ruled he was ineligible to take part due to a suspended prison sentence he says was trumped up. The decision by the central election commission was widely expected as election officials had repeatedly declared Navalny would be ineligible to run. Twelve members of the 13-member commission voted to bar Navalny. One member abstained, citing a possible conflict of interest. Navalny, 41, who polls show would struggle to beat incumbent Vladimir Putin in the March election, said he would appeal and called on his supporters to boycott the election and campaign

against it being held. “We knew this could happen, and so we have a straight-forward, clear plan,” Navalny said in a pre-recorded video released immediately after the decision.

“We announce a boycott of the election. The process in which we are called to participate is not a real election. It will feature only Putin and the candidates which he has personally selected.” Navalny said

he would use his campaign headquarters across Russia to support the boycott and monitor turnout on voting day, March 18. Polls show Putin, 65, who has dominated Russia’s political landscape for the last 17 years, is on course to be comfortably re-elected, making him eligible to serve another six years until 2024, when he turns 72. MANGUPURA — On Christmas and New Year holidays, Ngurah Rai Airport began to be crowded with passengers. Moreover, after the opening of the Christmas and New Year integrated hospitality desk on Monday (Dec. 18) until day one before Christmas or Sunday (Dec. 24), the number of passengers was recorded to reach 371,664 people by a total of 2,811 flights. Then, the number of domestic passengers showed an increase of 0.3 percent on the same day from 17,378 last year to 17,383 this year. However, the departures decreased -9.96 percent on the same day from 14,273 last year to 12,852 this year. The number of domestic flight arrivals increased by 11.82 percent on the same day from 110 flights in 2016 to 123 flights this year. “In the meantime, the departure of flight this year also showed an increase, from 116 flights last year to 125 flights this year on the same day, with an increase of 7.76 percent,” he concluded. For international flights, the arrival increased by 8.22 percent on the same day from 73 flights last year to 79 flights this year. Likewise, the departure also increased by 14.86 percent from 74 flights last year to 85 flights this year. Although the number of flights increased, there was a decrease in the number of passengers. Arrival passengers decreased by -2.15 percent on the same day from 14,588 passengers last year to 14,274 passengers this year. NEGARA — Domestic tourist arrivals from Java to Bali through Ketapang-Gilimanuk Harbor have showed an increase since the past week. As observation on this weekend, the vehicles from outside Bali coming into Bali also began to experience a surge. From the production data of Christmas Transportation 2017 and New Year 2018, day one before the celebration or December 24 until December 25 from Ketapang to Gilimanuk Harbor, the vessels operating reached 33 units or rose 6 percent from 2016 that were only 31 units. The number of passengers amounted to 31,100 people or rose by 1 percent from last year reaching 30,894 people. Sonic boom or bust? Dreams of super-fast jet travel revival face headwinds

Supersonic passenger travel, which died out with the Concorde’s demise in 2003, will make a comeback by the mid-2020s if three entrepreneurial U.S.-based companies can make jets quiet and efficient enough to win over buyers and fliers.

Fifteen years ago, Boeing Co cancelled plans to build the near-supersonic Sonic Cruiser, the last big attempt by a major manufacturer to speed up commercial travel. Now Japan Airlines Co Ltd and Virgin Group are backing one of the three U.S. supersonic projects, Denver-based Boom Technology Inc, which plans a 55-seat all business class jet. Lockheed Martin Corp is partnering with Aerion Corp to develop smaller supersonic business jets, with Spike Aerospace Inc also targeting the private jet market given many see the super-rich as the likeliest early adopters of supersonic travel. Concorde was developed in the 1960s, meaning this is hardly a new technology. But the programme was government-backed, with only 14 jets ever delivered to then-government owned British Airways and Air France. Other airline orders evaporated as the purchase price soared and they were eventually retired as maintenance costs rose and passenger revenue fell. New players are relying on venture capital funding models. “This is more about engines and economics than it is about airframes,” Richard Aboulafia, the vice president of analysis at aerospace research firm Teal Group, said of the challenges of a supersonic revival. To make the project economics stack up the engines need to be far more fuel efficient and less noisy than those used by Concorde or fighter jets. That has proven tough to engineer, especially at higher speeds like the Concorde’s Mach 2, which halved the travel time from London to New York to 3.5 hours. ‘REALISTIC PROJECT’

Engine manufacturers and jet makers have spent decades improving fuel efficiency, expanding range and reducing noise.

But to get up to mach speed, a supersonic jet requires an engine core more like those on the commercial jets of the 1970s and 1980s which noisily gobble more air and fuel. “A large fraction of the benefits we have in efficiency and noise reduction we are going to lose as soon as we have to go back to that sort of architecture,” said Daniel EdgingtonMitchell, an aerospace engineering lecturer at Melbourne’s Monash University. Aerion, the most advanced of the proposed supersonic jet projects, is working with GE Aviation to develop an engine based on a core used in F-16 fighters and Boeing 737s that was developed in the 1970s, a GE spokesman said. In a sign of the challenges involved using an older engine core rather than spending $1 billion-plus to engineer a new one, Aerion has reduced the jet’s planned speed from Mach 1.6 to 1.4. Today’s top business jets fly at around Mach 0.9 and commercial jets at Mach 0.85. Jeff Miller, Aerion’s head of marketing, said the speed had fallen to meet noise standards and due to temperature limits involved with adapting an existing engine core. Aerion, chaired by billionaire businessman Robert Bass, plans for the 12-seat, $120 million jet to make its first test flight in 2023, with entry into service in 2025. “Aerion has researched the problems since 2003 and therefore reached the highest degree of realism,” Leeham Co analyst Bjorn Fehrm said, comparing it to the loftier supersonic ambitions of Boom and Spike. “If one wants to go faster, a suitable core is harder to find.”

FASTER IS BETTER

Boom wants a $200 million jet capable of Mach 2.2 and Spike aims for a $100 million jet at Mach 1.6, down from an earlier Mach 1.8. Both want their jets to enter service in 2023, two years earlier than Aerion. Several industry sources said those timelines appeared unrealistic because the companies have yet to select engines and

will face testing and certification challenges. Boom founder and CEO Blake Scholl said the company was examining an adaptation of an existing engine as well as a clean-sheet option, with more to say next year. Spike CEO Vik Kachoria said his company was in talks with two engine suppliers. Both are working on smaller demonstrator aircraft with different engines designed to prove the concept is achievable within their proposed timeframes. Engine maker Rolls-Royce Holdings PLC said it was interested in supersonic work. United Technologies Corp’s Pratt & Whitney division said it was “not currently” working with Boom and did not respond to a question on Spike, while GE did not provide comment on either project. Scholl said airlines need a speed of at least Mach 2 to make the supersonic business case stake up because that would shave one day off a trans-Atlantic itinerary and two days off transPacific trips. For now, only over-water itineraries are under consideration due to widespread bans on civilian supersonic flights over land. “Faster speeds not only are better for passengers, they are better for airlines, who get to turn the plane around and fly more segments in the same day, possibly even with the same crew,” Scholl said. Japan Airlines and Virgin Group, which declined to comment, have a combined 30 options over Boom jets, with three other as-yet-unnamed customers signed on for another 46. Former British Airways chief Concorde pilot Mike Bannister said the biggest hurdle for Boom was to develop jets at a price that would stack up for airlines, or early orders would evaporate as they had with Concorde. “The technical challenges, whilst great, are surmountable,” said Bannister, who was the captain of the last-ever commercial Concorde flight and has advised Boom’s team. “It is an absolute delight to be able to see on the horizon the prospect of another supersonic airliner, particularly for my family because my daughter who is 24 is a commercial pilot. I would love to see my daughter flying it.” (rtr)

Aside from the matter of rice and side dishes, the ease for health treatment and the opportunity to continue their school should still be given. “So, their rights may not get disturbed. The status is revoked but refugees still get their rights from the government,” said Chairman of Commission IV of the Bali House of Representatives, Nyoman Parta, when asked for his confirmation on Saturday (Dec. 23). Similar opinion was submitted by a member of Commission I of the Bali House of Representatives from Karangasem electoral district, I Nyoman Oka Antara. The assistance to the Mount Agung refugees must continuously be given though the emergency response status has been revoked considering that Mount Agung remains at level IV or warning so that it is impossible for refugees to return home. Besides, they are not able to work maximally as in normal circumstances. “The assistance remains to be provided until the alert level is back to normal. On the other hand, the president’s policy (revoking emergency response status—Ed) is very good. Thus, foreign guests are no longer afraid to go to Bali. It means if the tourism is normal, automatically the economy of Bali is not paralyzed,” added this PDI-P politician. According to Oka Antara, probably there will be more ‘victims’ if the president does not issue a policy to revoke the emergency response status considering the majority of Balinese people are working in tourism sector. If tourists do not dare to come to Bali because of emergency disaster response status, the layoff will happen everywhere. “They can lose their jobs, the unemployment will increase,” he said. Meanwhile, Chairman of Commission III of the Bali House of Representatives, I Nengah Tamba, said the government needs to think about short-, mid- and longterm plans related to the refugee handlings because no one can make sure how long the eruption of Mount Agung will last. When president decides to revoke the emergency response status of the disaster, surely the risk has also been considered. “If president has stated so, we cannot do anything. Of course, president has considered the risk. Now, do not just think about logistics issues (clothing and food—Ed), the most important thing is how to

recover the refugee mentality,” said this Democratic politician. After getting a funding worth IDR 100 billion from central government, Tamba requested that the funds will not only be used for tourism promotion purposes but also for coping with the losses that may be experienced by tourists if the airport is closed again. According to him, tourists should be given good services when to be diverted to alternative harbor or airport. “Yesterday, there was an incident where tourists were dropped off as such at Gilimanuk with three big suitcases in tired conditions. They had to carry the suitcase to a ferry. This is a small thing, but has something to do with humanity. We should think about this. DENPASAR — Large-sized Trans Sarbagita bus with capacity of 55 passengers will soon be changed into medium-sized bus with 35 passengers. The number will be reduced as well from 25 units to 10 units only. This policy is scheduled to come into force as of January 1, 2018. “The buses are now in the office. Police plate, registration and roadworthy certificate have been issued and all the Trans Sarbagita buses will be replaced with 10 units of new buses,” said the Head of the Bali Transportation Agency, IGA Sudarsana, when confirmed on Monday (Dec. 25). Currently, added Sudarsana, there are 15 units of large-sized buses operated in Corridor II serving Batu Bulan - Nusa Dua route. Furthermore, all the buses will be replaced with five units of medium-sized bus. Then, in Corridor I serving Denpasar City-GWK route having operated 10 units of medium-sized bus will be

replaced with five units of new buses of the same size. Passenger increase occurs on December 16-24

DENPASAR — Based on the air traffic statistics of the Ngurah Rai International Airport, there was a surge of passengers. From December 18 to December 24, 2017, international passenger arrivals are moving up starting from 10,605 people, 12,346 people, 12,385 people, 13,679 people, 12,346 people, 15,000 people and 14,274 people. BUSINESS Japan’s record FY2018 budget puts fiscal discipline in doubt

TOKYO - Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s cabinet endorsed a record $860 billion budget for fiscal 2018 on Friday, opting to keep the economy on a sustained recovery with aggressive monetary stimulus and putting fiscal reforms on the back burner again. The general-account budget spending for the next fiscal year starting April will total 97.7 trillion yen ($860 billion), the biggest amount ever and slightly more than this year’s initial plan to spend 97.5 trillion yen, the Ministry of Finance said. The budget - a record high for the sixth year - got a boost from snowballing welfare spending to respond to a fast-ageing population and a record military outlay amid regional tensions related to North Korea. The demands strain the heaviest public debt burden in the industrialised world. Failure to curb budget spending has cast doubt on Abe’s will to back fiscal reform. His administration is counting on growth to boost tax revenue and reduce new borrowing, and on the Bank of Japan’s (BOJ) lowrate policy to curb the high cost of servicing mammoth public debt. “Abe’s fiscal reform relies heavily on economic recovery and optimistic tax revenue estimates,” said Masaki Kuwahara, senior economist at Nomura Securities. “I don’t see a strong determination to resolve public debt from this budget.” Tax revenue for 2018/19 is estimated at 59.1 trillion yen, the highest since fiscal year 1991 during the asset bubble era, assuming the government’s rosy projections for real 1.8 percent and nominal 2.5 percent growth next fiscal year. Hefty tax revenue allows for

reductions in new bond issuance to 33.7 trillion yen, bringing the debt dependency ratio to 34.5 percent - way higher than other advanced peers. The government will spend 23.3 trillion yen for debt-servicing - roughly a quarter of the overall budget - even as it keeps assumed interest rates at a record low of 1.1 percent due to the central bank’s negative rate policy. There is a mythical story accompanying the making of this medicine. It is said that in 2005, when an ngenteg linggih ritual was held, there was an offering maker who encountered a juwuk linglang or tangerine. It was then halved, strangely it exuded fire.

This tangerine was then mixed with some elements of fruit, herbs and oils. Besides, there is a medicine known as manik sekecap made from honey bees. The honey is not taken from anywhere but from the chamber shrine where the bees make their nests. Likewise, there is lungsir pancawarna or multicolored sea snail. People who suffer from diseases of the eye, this medicine can be invoked at the Batu Coblong spring shrine. Another shrine is called swine shrine where people can invoke medicine for their livestock. China hands down harshest sentence yet in crackdown on activists BEIJING - China sentenced a prominent rights activist to eight years in jail for subversion on Tuesday, his lawyer said, the harshest sentence passed in a government crackdown on activism that began more than two years ago. In a separate case, a rights lawyer avoided criminal punishment despite being found guilty of inciting subversion, because he admitted his crimes, the Chinese court trying him said. Wu Gan, a blogger better known by his online name “Super Vulgar Butcher”, plans to appeal against the eight-year sentence handed down by the Tianjin Municipality’s No. 2 Intermediate People’s Court, his lawyer, Yan Xin, told Reuters. The harshness of the sentence prompted the German embassy in Beijing to issue a statement expressing disappointment. Wu regularly championed sensitive cases of government abuses of power, both online and in street protests. He was detained in May 2015 and charged with subversion. The activist criticised China’s political system online and used performance art to create disturbances, as well as insulting people and spreading false information, according to a statement from the court posted on its website. “He carried out a string of criminal actions to subvert state power and overthrow the socialist system and seriously harmed state security and social stability,” the court said. Before his arrest, Wu used his platform to cast doubt on the official version of events in an incident in early May 2015, in which a police officer shot a petitioner in a train station in northern Heilongjiang province. In May, he confessed to the charges against him in what rights groups called a scripted “sham” trial. In January, Xie’s wife and lawyer released detailed accounts of torture suffered by Xie at the hands of the authorities, which were widely reported on in the international media. Chinese state media branded those reports “fake news” and said the accounts were concocted as a means of gaining attention. Airport train to operate from Jakarta today JAKARTA - An Airport Train will start operation from Jakarta towards the Soekarno-Hatta international airport in Cengkareng, Banten, on Tuesday morning (Dec 26) at 03:47 a.m. local time, with one-trip fare promotion of Rp30thousand. “The trip trial will start tomorrow (Tuesday), and it is the beginning of commercial operation,” according to President Director of the state-owned railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia, Edi Sukmoro, here on Monday. Edi also stated that the Rp30 thousand promo fare price will be during the testing phase, with the community expected to give input for full operation in January 2018. Indonesian bishops call for peace in Christmas message

JAKARTA - The Conference of Indonesian Bishops (KWI) has called on all Christians to maintain peace during Christmas 2017.

Currently there are approximately 20 third generation puppeteers in Babakan hamlet who perform various types of puppet shows. “Babakan Sukawati became a center of art during the kingdom era”, he said. The people of Babakan have remained highly creative developing all manner of traditional puppets with Wayan Madra being a famous example. Ferrari could lead other Formula One teams into an alternative championship if the sport becomes too much like the U.S.-based NASCAR series but hope it does not come to that, chairman Sergio Marchionne has said. Speaking to reporters at the Italian team’s pre-Christmas lunch in Maranello, the Fiat Chrysler chief executive said his previous threats to take Ferrari out of the sport after 2020 should not be taken lightly. He also announced a Feb. 22 launch date for the team’s 2018 car and said Ferrari should be challenging for the title after finishing runners-up to Mercedes this year. Marchionne said Liberty Media, the U.S.-based company which took over Formula One in January and sidelined former commercial supremo Bernie Ecclestone, was learning the ropes. He took issue, however, with the approach taken by former Ferrari technical director Ross Brawn, the Formula One managing director who won titles with his own Brawn GP in 2009 before serving as Mercedes F1 team boss. “The thing that most annoys me is that there is an experienced man like Ross Brawn there who is looking for ways that go against the DNA of Formula One,” the Gazzetta dello Sport website quoted Marchionne as saying. “Making cars all the same with simpler and cheaper engines is like NASCAR, it doesn’t interest us,” he added. “We need to find a balanced solution for the future that satisfies everyone and I think we will do it in time. “Otherwise Ferrari will leave. If they (sceptics) think we are bluffing, they are playing with fire.” Most of the Formula One teams have contracts that expire at the end of 2020 and Marchionne said Ferrari would be able to walk away. “I think that Ferrari has the strength to drag others as well to an alternative championship,” he added. There have been similar threats in the past from Ferrari, before Marchionne’s time, without any of them coming to anything. Marchionne is a very different character to former Ferrari chairman Luca di Montezemolo, however, and Ecclestone told Reuters in November that he did not consider it an empty threat. The Gazzetta quoted Marchionne as also saying Maserati could follow Alfa Romeo back into Formula One in some capacity, but not yet, while Fiat Chrysler (FCA) would have a presence in some form in the Formula E electric series. Benefiting from an off-season trade, Indiana Pacers guard Victor Oladipo is finally becoming the franchise player he was projected to be. The 2013 top-two draft choice had been seen as ancillary to the deal when Indiana sent cornerstone Paul George to the Oklahoma City Thunder. But Oladipo appears focused on proving his worth in a new lead role with the Pacers. “I was already motivated before (the trade to Indiana), Oladipo told Reuters following a recent win over Atlanta. “Then (the trade) just happened. It might have added on a little bit but I was already motivated.” The fifth-year player has translated his motivation into career-best production as he averages 25.3 points per game on 48.6 percent shooting, which includes 42.5 percent from three-point range. Advocaat, who stepped down as Netherlands coach last month, signed a contract on Monday to take over until the end of the season at Sparta, who sit joint bottom of the standings. The 70-year-old played at Sparta for two seasons in the 1980s and his return was demanded by supporters after the team suffered five successive losses. Steven Gerrard: ‘I’m definitely feeling it LIVERPOOL - It took Steven Gerrard five months to accept the end of his time at LA Galaxy was also the conclusion of his 19-year career as a professional footballer. The void will never be filled completely but the addiction continues and must be satisfied. That is why, despite feeling he has aged considerably during six months in charge of Liverpool Under-18s, nothing has doused his ambition to descend into “the madness” of top-level management. The cravings clearly remain in the 37-year-old as he laments the absence of training from his Christmas Day routine. “I actually miss it,” he says, sipping an orange juice on a miserable December day at Liverpool’s academy in Kirkby. “It only used to be an hour and I only like Christmas Eve anyway. The rest is too long. I’d hate it if there was no football now for a few weeks.” What is also clear is that Gerrard’s appointment as under-18s manager came without privileges. The job is not about Liverpool indulging their illustrious former captain but, with Jürgen Klopp’s instruction, ensuring he has the best possible grounding before returning to the spotlight as a manager, wherever that may be. It has been a challenging, rewarding introduction. “I’m definitely feeling it,” Gerrard says. “I’ve aged about two years in six months. Jürgen’s advice when I came back was: ‘I only want you to shadow for a short time because you need to have a couple of years of making mistakes, of

picking your own team, of deciding tactics. You need to find your philosophy, a way of playing, you need to deal with individual problems, you need to praise individuals, help individuals, you need to feel disappointment and setbacks and then after a couple of years you’ll know if this gig is for you.’ He painted a real picture of how it is. “For the last five months I’ve felt all the highs and lows and experienced all the daily stuff that managers deal with, albeit at youth-team level. It will definitely prepare me for wherever I end up. It is not scaring me or putting me off. I know the further I go there is more scrutiny, more attention, more opinions, more criticism, more praise. I get all that. For me it was important to get a taste of it away from the cameras and experience all these things before you go into the madness.” The latest chapter in Gerrard’s Liverpool career consumes him, just like the one before. He works six days a week at the academy – “I had to show the players my work ethic was right and get their trust,” he explains – and the demands have been an eye-opening experience. Top of that list is, he says: “The hours you have to put in.” Gerrard explains: “As a player I could switch off when the game was done. That is very difficult as a coach. That has been the main difference. Now after a game I’m thinking what went well, what didn’t go well, what individuals do I need to work on this week, who do I need to praise, who do I need to speak to, who’s been naughty at

school? Having to handle that side of it has been very different for me, not that I was an angel at school, but we have a guy here, Phil Roscoe, who works on the education and welfare side of things and he is brilliant, absolutely brilliant. I would be lost if I didn’t have Phil’s help and support. The staff have been a huge help. For the last five months I’ve felt all the highs and lows and experienced all the daily stuff managers deal with “There is a lot more to it than you think when you’re a player. I have more respect for coaches and managers now even though as a player I always respected the ones I worked with. I didn’t realise how much was involved in their roles until I tried it myself.” Gerrard also manages the under19s in the Uefa Youth League where, in both matches against Spartak Moscow this season, he had to deal with Liverpool players being racially abused; Bobby Adekanye in Moscow, Rhian Brewster in the return at Prenton Park. “I’ve had experience in my playing career of team-mates being subjected to that abuse,” he says, “but when it is your player and you are leading the team it is a real eye-opener and a learning experience. I care for these kids, they are playing for my club, they are playing for my team. I need to show them support and I will do.” What Liverpool’s former midfielder does not show players is footage of himself in action. Gerrard is acutely aware of the pitfalls that can await top players who turn
